Trump’s legal team prepares for showdown with Mueller

Mueller is investigating Moscow’s role in Trump’s election and whether he sought to block the probe into contacts his associates have had with Russians IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s legal team is preparing for the possibility of an interview with Special Counsel Robert Mueller over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. Mueller is investigating Moscow’s efforts to help elect Trump and whether he sought to block the probe into contacts his associates have had with Russians, The Washington Post reported on June 4 night. Trump declared in tweets earlier on June 4 that he has the “absolute right” to pardon himself and called Mueller unconstitutional. As the two sides head toward a confrontation over a presidential interview in the coming weeks, newly hired White House lawyer

US business groups oppose Trump’s tariffs WASHINGTON: Three US business groups, funded by major conservative political donors, have announced a multi-year, multimillion-dollar campaign to promote free trade and oppose Donald Trump administration’s tariffs against imports from around the world. The campaign, launched by Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity and The LIBRE Initiative, will “include paid media, activist education and grassroots mobilization, lobbying and policy analysis - all intended to transform the way Washington and the rest of the country consider and value trade with other nations,” the groups said on Monday in a statement, Xinhua reported this week. The groups said they would push the Trump administration to permanently lift those steel and aluminum tariffs, the recent tariffs on solar panels and washing machines as well the proposed additional tariffs on imports from China. “Tariffs and other trade barriers make us poorer. They raise prices for those who can least afford it,” said Freedom Partners Executive Vice President James Davis. Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips added that there are better ways to negotiate trade deals than by “punishing American consumers and businesses with higher costs.” —IANS

Emmet Flood and other attorneys are strategising about how to handle a subpoena from Mueller that would seek to compel Trump to

testify in the investigation. Several White House officials said Flood has cautioned Trump and others about the unpredictability of

a subpoena fight that could be decided by the Supreme Court. Trump lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani told The Washington Post that the outcome of such a showdown is uncertain. “Both sides are taking a big risk with a subpoena fight,” he said. Meanwhile, Giuliani and other advisers have begun making plans to prepare Trump for a possible sitdown with Mueller. Another Trump lawyer, Jane Raskin, talks with Mueller deputy James Quarles at least three times a week. She is reviewing the classified conversations Trump and other top aides have had with foreign leaders, such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Bill Clinton was the first US President subpoenaed to testify in a criminal probe, before his lawyers negotiated the terms of a voluntary interview instead.

Trump pardons drug offender backed by Kim Kardashian WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump this week commuted the sentence of a 63-year-old drug offender Alice Johnson, a week after Kim Kardashian West visited Trump to lobby on her behalf. According to a White House statement, the beneficiary of the commutation was Alice Johnson, who was given life sentence in 1996 for possession of drugs and money laundering, Xinhua reported. “Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades,” the statement said. Trump’s decision came after hollywood celebrity Kim Kardashian West visited Trump last week to lobby on behalf of Johnson, West reportedly became involved in the case after learning of Johnson’s case in a video, she tweeted to her 60 million followers “BEST NEWS EVER!” after the White House’s decision. —IANS

Trump calls media vicious for speculating about Melania IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump this week called the US media “vicious” and “unfair” after some outlets speculated about the health of first lady Melania Trump after she underwent surgery in mid-May. “The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania,” Trump tweeted. “During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!” he added. Trump complained in a subsequent tweet that last week “Four reporters spotted Melania in the White House ... walking merrily

Trump blames Canada for burning White House in 1812 IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump this week reproached Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, claiming that Canada burned the White House in the War of 1812, although that was actually done by British troops, media reports said. According to a CNN reported,

citing unnamed sources, during a May 25 telephone call to discuss US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, Trudeau asked Trump how he could use national security to justify imposing the tariffs. “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?” Trump reportedly responded in what was an overall “testy” conversation. Since Trump announced that he

House as saying. According to medical experts, it is normal for patients undergoing such procedures to be released the same day, but Melania remained hospitalized for almost five days. That relatively lengthy hospitalization and the low profile she has maintained since she returned to the White House sparked all sorts of theories on the social networks, including that she had left Trump or was cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller in the Russia probe. Last weekend, Melania did not accompany Trump to Camp David and she is not scheduled to travel with the president to Quebec for the G7 summit or to Singapore in early June for his anticipated summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. temporarily agreed to exclude the European Union, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, South Korea and Mexico — the White House has taken the stance that it was being done on the basis of national security. The justification for that argument, however, has been called into question both by experts and other leaders, Efe reported. In fact, during an interview last weekend — and with the tariffs already in place — Trudeau said it was “inconceivable” that the Trump administration could suspect Canada.

The country’s central bank — RBI — has raised repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 6.25 percent, responding to concerns on inflation from surging global crude oil prices. The RBI, however, maintained its ‘neutral’ stance on policy, as it has done over four previous bi-monthly policy reviews when it held the repo, or its short term lending rate for commercial banks, at 6 percent. This stance allows the RBI to move either way on rates. The decision of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is consistent with the neutral stance of mon-

the central bank was undertaking after more than four years and comes for the first time under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government. The government was quick to laud the latest monetary policy review. “Welcome monetary policy statement. Quite balanced assessment of growth, inflation and external situation and expectations. was shown around the Hedgewar memorial premises which includes a small temple. Mukherjee, a Congress party veteran, was in Nagpur to address the RSS cadre at the organization’s final leg of three-year

training program called the ‘Tritiya Varsh Varg’. His visit has raised many an eyebrow, including in his own party. The RSS was banned on February 4, 1948 following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The ban was lifted on July 11, 1949 after then Sarsanghchalak M.S. Golwalkar gave an undertaking that the organization would abide by the Indian Constitution. Brushing aside all criticism, the former President arrived here on Wednesday evening with the main engagement being the RSS function at Reshim Baug. He was received at the airport by RSS functionaries, but nobody from the Congress came to receive him.

By-election graffiti:

Troubled times for BJP There is a realization among BJP’s opponents that electoral tie-ups can win them elections AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

I

t will be a mistake to ascribe the defeats of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Kairana, Noorpur and Bhandara-Gondiya by-elections in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra only to the tie-ups among its opponents. While there is little doubt that in Kairana, an alliance of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress led to the BJP’s defeat, it is also undeniable that the combine wouldn’t have worked if the Muslims, Dalits, backward castes and the Jats hadn’t turned against the BJP. It is for the BJP to ascertain why they did so when a section of the economists is sanguine about the party’s prospects because of low inflation and high — 7.7 percent — growth. But the economy may not boost the party’s fortunes in a context of social fissures. As those associated with the Muslim and Christian communities like former Vice

President Hamid Ansari and the Archbishop of Delhi, Anil Couto, have said, both the communities are living with a sense of insecurity. The reason apparently is the fear of suddenly being attacked and even killed by saffron groups on one pretext or another. The unhappiness of the Dalits, too, has been obvious in the wake

against it in this respect in 2014, but that was because of the expectations of rapid, employment-oriented development raised by Narendra Modi. Arguably, these hopes may still be fulfilled if the present growth rate continues. But jobs cannot provide any solace to people who feel that they are second class citizens in

of several instances of lynching and the continuing tension in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur area between the upper caste Rajputs and the Dalits, one of whose leaders, Chandrashekar Azad “Ravan”, has been in indefinite detention. It is obvious that with sizable sections of the Muslims, who constitute 14.2 percent of the population, Dalits (16.6 percent) and Christians (2.3 percent) alienated from the BJP, its chances of electoral success cannot be very high. The party did beat the odds

parties, and in Bhandara-Gondiya, where the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress successfully put up a untied fight against the BJP. The formula, therefore, for success against the BJP is clear — unite or perish. As West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee once said, the objective should be to offer the BJP a one-to-one fight by parties which are the most influential in a certain region. If this is done, victory is assured as the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s three

today’s India, as a retired police officer, Julio Ribeiro, has said. The angst of the minorities has combined with the realization among the BJP’s opponents that the only way to defeat it is via electoral tie-ups among themselves. This is what happened in Kairana, where a combined opposition seamlessly garnered the votes of the Muslims, the Dalits, the backward castes and the Jats. It was the same in Noorpur, where the SP candidate received the support of the other opposition

successive victories in Araria, Jehanabad and Jokihat in Bihar against the ruling Janata Dal-United have shown. There is little doubt that the recent by-election victories, along with the formation of the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress government in Karnataka, are being seen as precursors to a combined opposition at the national level. If such a unity is achieved, it presages troubled times for the BJP because there is no way it can withstand such a concerted offensive.

‘Only India can help itself combat pollution’ India produces over 62 million tons of solid waste every year, of which only 43 million tons is collected, only 12 million tons is treated and the rest is dumped KUSHAGRA DIXIT, NEW DELHI

U

nited Nations Environment head Erik Solheim believes that only India can help itself when it comes to “Beat Plastic Pollution” — this year’s theme of World’s Environment Day that the country hosted. With the United States working on its way to quit the historic Paris Climate Agreement, Solheim says it’s just the right time for India and China — among the world’s top polluters — to lead the world in the war against climate change and pollution. “First of all, only India can change India. Indian political leaders and its people can change India,” Solheim told IANS in an interview. “But we can help,” he continued, adding that despite being in a desperate situation to work upon its solid waste management, the world can still learn from India

(Left) Social activists participating in an awareness rally urging people to avoid the use of plastics; (above) UN Environment Head Erik Solhein (Photo: IANS)

and India can learn from China and vice versa. India produces over 62 million tonnes of solid waste every year, of which only 43 million tonnes is collected, only 12 million tonnes is treated and the rest is dumped. According to the experts, the figure is expected to rise to 436 mil-

lion tonnes by 2050. “There is a huge issue of waste management in India and everyone can see that; we went from Delhi to Agra via train and saw that there was plastic all over the rails, that’s a problem,” he said, highlighting the “big need” to manage that. Speaking of plastic waste alone,

approximately 900,000 tonnes of PET — used to make soft drink bottles, furniture, carpet, paneling, etc. — was produced in India in 2015-16, as reported by the National Chemical Laboratory. About 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated evey year in India, of which only 60 percent, according to Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan, is recycled. Delhi with 689.52 tonnes tops the chart of plastic waste fol-

lowed by Chennai (429.39 tonnes), Mumbai (408.27 tonnes), Bengaluru (313.87 tonnes) and Hyderabad (199.33 tonnes). Solheim, however, was optimistic about India and counts on the initiative taken by the country’s political leaders. According to business analysts, Indian waste management Industry has a potential of $15 billion with promising growth prospects. “To tackle the situation, you need to see how these problems were resolved in the past. For instance, we resolved the biggest global environment problem of 1980s — the hole in the ozone layer. At that time also, political leaders and businesses bought us the solutions,” he pointed out. Appreciating China for cleaning its rivers, Solheim highlighted the scope of learning for India. “If China can do that, then India can do that in Ganges and other rivers,” he added.

However, the White House is yet to confirm the development. It’s not clear if Trump is eager for a two-day summit with Kim, but he has expressed a desire for flexibility in the negotiations and

ndhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu this week alleged that the BJP is hatching a “big conspiracy” in collusion with his rivals to politically destabilize the state. He suspects that “Operation Garuda” allegedly planned by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state involves YSR Congress Party chief Y.S. I just came from the court. Sorry, guys, I can’t give you that answer. I cannot give you any answer. “I’m just not thinking about tennis at the moment,” he added. Recovering from his elbow injury last year, Djokovic, who finished his sweep of Grand Slam tournament titles two years ago in Paris, had to feature this year as the No. 20 seed, his lowest Grand Slam seeding since the 2006 U.S. Open. PARIS: World No.1 Simona Halep and 2016 winner Garbine Muguruza won in different manners over Germany’s Angelique Kerber and Russia’s Maria Sharapova respectively to set up their semi-final clash at the French Open this week. Halep came back from one set

However, he failed to capitalize on the momentum, and several set points in the tie-breaker, to be forced into the fifth set. “I struggled from the beginning. Unfortunately, it took me time to get well, and struggled with a little injury at the beginning. When I warmed up, it was better. “But it’s just a pity that I couldn’t capitalize on the chances of leading 4-1 in the fourth set and

some break points that I thought I had in there, but he came back and credit to him,” admitted Djokovic, while declining to specify his issues. “I don’t want to talk about that,” he said. “Any defeat is difficult in the Grand Slams, especially the one that came from months of buildup. and moved to six points. Stephen Constantine’s wards thrashed Chinese Taipei 5-0 in their first outing and will now take

on New Zealand on June 7 in the four-team tourney. They are top of the table followed by Kenya (three points), who beat the All Whites 2-1 in their first match and will now take on Chinese Taipei. The top two teams in the points table will meet in the summit clash on June 10. This was India’s 13th win in 16th games and second on the bounce since the loss to Kyrgyz Republic. Both sides struggled for cohesion in the first period as it rained profusely. In the 25th minute, Chhetri tried to take advantage of a sloppy clearance and chip the ball over retreating Kenyan goalkeeper Patrick Matasi but his effort went just over the crossbar.

MOSCOW: Russia was held 1-1 by Turkey in the hosts’ final friendly before their June 14 FIFA World Cup opener against Saudi Arabia. MADRID: Former Spain coach Vicente del Bosque this week said that the Spanish national team is not the only strong favorite to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup, set to kick off in Russia next week. The 2010 World Cup champion is among the favorites, but not the best, he said during an event for the UN refugee organization here, reported Efe. He pointed out that Spain’s preWorld Cup friendly matches were pos-

seven matches. In a dull first half, Russia’s only moment of quality came in the 32nd minute, when Alan Dzagoev exploited a Turkish giveaway to set up a goal by Aleksandr Samedov. Turkey were not much better, mustering only two shots on goal for the entire match, but one of them, a strike from 25 yards by Yunus Malli in the 59th minute, was enough to level the contest at 1-1.

itive and reinforced the level of the team, but cautioned that the Spanish side should travel to Russia with moderate optimism. Del Bosque added that in order to reclaim the title this summer, Spain will need to have a combination of good players, a good team, good coaching and good fans — as well as good luck. The World Cup begins June 14, with Spain set to compete in Group B along with Portugal, Iran and Morocco.

Blackmail scam in St. Louis suburb

BY A STAFF WRITER HESTERFIELD, MO – The Chesterfield police are warning of a blackmail scam under which residents are asked to send money in order to keep their infidelities quiet. Chesterfield residents are receiving letters in the mail stating that the sender knows that the resident cheated on their wife and demands the recipient to send money to keep the affair under wraps. Back in January, the Creve Coeur Police also had received multiple reports of residents receiving such letters. According to the police, the letter will often state, “I know you cheated on your wife” and “I have evidence of the infidelity.” The sender then gives the receiver an ultimatum to do nothing and allow their secret to get out or to send a certain monetary amount and they will destroy the evidence. The scammers are demanding the payment be in cryptocurrency or other virtual currencies to make it difficult for the police to track the transactions. The police are advising residents against sending money, and urged them to keep them informed.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Uttar Pradesh Association of Greater Chicago (UPA) held its annual Hindi Hashya Kavi Sammelan on May 27 at Ashiyana banquet hall in Downers Grove, Illinois. It was a huge success with over 400 audiences attending the program from all over Chicagoland and outside. community news/east coast Taselisib - new weapon against breast cancer 4

FRIDAY,08 JUNE, 2018

BY DR. NILESH MEHTA here is good news for patients with breast cancer. At the justconcluded American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, clinical data of a new targeted drug, Taselisib, was presented which showed some exciting results. In this clinical trial known as SANDPIPER Trial funded by F. HoffmannLa Roche, when taselisib was combined with standard hormone therapy fulvestrant (Faslodex), the combination halted the growth of advanced breast cancer growth by 2 months longer than hormone therapy alone, and decreased the chance of cancer worsening by 30%. Taselisib targets a genetic abnormality (PIK3CAgene mutation) within breast cancer cells. This group of emerging drugs are called as PI3K inhibitors and Taselisib represents the first and most potent treatment in this class. Taselisib is the first medicine that specifically blocks the type of PI3K protein (PI3K alpha) that is mutated in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. This drug is also being actively studied in other cancers notably gynecologic cancer and head and neck. “About 40% of all patients with advanced breast cancer estrogen receptor positive have PIK3CA mutations, which means they could benefit from Taselisib,” said lead study author José Baselga, MD, PhD, FASCO, the Physician-in-Chief at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. “Our findings are proof that that targeting this pathway in breast cancer is effective. However, the benefit to patients was more modest than we had hoped for, and there is a risk of considerable side effects with the addition of Taselisib.” The SANDPIPER trial, a phase III

T

clinical trial, enrolled 516 postmenopausal

women with locally advanced or metastatic Estrogen Receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer that worsened or recurred despite initial hormone treatment with aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase inhibitors are oral drugs that are typically utilized initially to treat women with breast cancer. However, tumors become smarter by developing resistance to this therapy when aromatase inhibitors are used as single drugs. Hence the combination of drugs is being increasingly utilized to circumvent resistance. Breast cancer patients were randomly assigned to receive fulvestrant and placebo

or fulvestrant and Taselisib to figure out the impact of this new drug in this disease. Women who received Taselisib and fulvestrant had a 30% lower chance of cancer worsening than those who received fulvestrant and a placebo. Taselisib also extended the time until the cancer worsened by a median of two months (7.4 months with Taselisib and fulvestrant vs. 5.4 months with fulvestrant and placebo). The response rate to treatment (tumor shrinkage) was more than doubled when Taselisib was added (28% vs. 11.9%). Whether women lived longer with the double drug combination or not is still not known. One of the unusual aspects of this trial was the discrepancy in results based on geographic areas. It was noted that Taselisib provided more benefit to breast cancer patients who received treatment in North America and Europe, where cancer worsening was delayed by a median of 3.5 months. In other countries, including Eastern Europe and Latin America, Taselisib appeared to provide very little or no added benefit. More research is needed to understand the reasons for this geographic discrepancy. The most common severe side effects for patients who received Taselisib were diarrhoea, high blood sugar, and colon inflammation (colitis). Due to side effects, 17% of women who received Taselisib stopped treatment early, compared to only 2% of those who did not receive the targeted therapy. A few years ago, another group of drugs known as Cyclin dependent kinase inhibitors were shown to be successful in breast cancer patients when they were combined with hormonal therapy for breast cancer. While this new combination of Taselisib and hormonal therapy may not represent a home run in breast cancer treatment, it certainly opens up a new avenue of treatment option for breast cancer patients who are hormone receptor positive.

In Telangana, India’s 29th state, family and friends gather together to go into the woods, offer prayers to the God and Goddesses, cook the food, consume it in Mother Nature’s lap and have a fun time with family and friends. Volunteers came in early to make all the arrangements for the event. All the CHITA family and friends pitched in a dish for this potluck event. The dish that is famous in the Telangana region is ‘Gudaalu’, made out of corn, black-eyed peas etc. One of the family members brought in the dish with an added twist, chicken, in it and the dish was, of

C BY A STAFF WRITER ICHARDSON, TX -- Hours after being convicted in a multimillion dollar fraud case, Indian American Suresh Mitta, of Richardson, Texas, died while in the custody of US Marshals. News reports said Mitta, a technocrat, was convicted by a federal jury of taking part in an elaborate fraud scheme that involved selling bogus MRI equipment to a North Texas hospital. Mitta, who also went by the names Suresh

While in a cell with other prisoners in Jackson County, Mo., Mitta suffered what law enforcement authorities said looked like a seizure. An ambulance was called and Mitta was taken to a local hospital, where he died. Mitta had been facing up to 20 years in federal prison without parole.

CHITA president Manoj Kondam asked all the crowd to remember ‘Telangana Amara Veerulu’ and told them to observe a 2-minute silence to honor the souls who had sacrificed their lives for the Telangana movement. Later, men played cricket, followed by dances based on Bollywood and Tollywood numbers, making the event all fun and electrifying. CHITA vice president Vittal Kumar Eravelli and general secretary Neelima Akula thanked everyone for coming and supporting the event. It was announced that ‘Bathukamma’ (Floral Festival) celebrations will take place on September 29 at Naperville Grand Pavilion to honor the Mother Nature and Telangana culture. The event ended with a slogan “Johaar Telangana Aamara Veerulaku, Johaar”!

A BY A STAFF WRITER AREDO, TX – The Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) has arrested an estimated 274 undocumented Bangladeshis attempting to enter the country at the US-Mexico border in Laredo, Texas, since the beginning of fiscal year 2018. The Laredo border is the biggest entry point for undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh. In the latest round of arrests, Laredo Sector Border Patrol Agents arrested the Bangladeshis, who were apprehended after crossing the Rio Grande River in south Laredo. At the end of April, CBP reported that 209 Bangladeshis had been arrested since the beginning of fiscal year 2018. A May 31 press

L

statement saw that number jump to 274. A high number of arrests have occurred since January. The large number Bangladeshi immigrants entering the US through Laredo has sparked fears of terrorism. “The arrest of these people from Bangladesh shows there is a clear pipeline from anywhere in the world to Mexico and on to the southern border of Texas,” Border Patrol Agent Hector Garza had told reorters in April. “We have been lucky to catch these groups but there is no telling how many other people from countries that sponsor terrorism could be utilizing that same pipeline.” Garza explained that the young men

from Bangladesh have been trained in how to manipulate the system to utilize the Department of Homeland Security’s ongoing catch-and-release program. “Many of these people from Bangladesh will claim to be unaccompanied alien minors when they are captured by our agents,” he said, adding “At that point, they are turned over to immigration officials for processing under the existing catch-and-release programs for minors.” “When, during medical and dental examinations, immigration officers determine these people are actually adults, they are issued a Notice to Appear and released,” Agent Garza explained.

R S. Jaspreet Singh Uppal with his wife, four children & mother

BY A STAFF WRITER INCINNATI, OH -- A grand jur y had earlier indicted Broderick Malik Jones Roberts, a black man suspected in the May 12 shooting of truck driver S. Jaspreet Singh Uppal in Cincinnati, Ohio, but with the Indian-American victim’s death on May 21 from the wounds, investigators are now going to ask for a murder indictment. Roberts is accused of shooting Uppal while he was sitting in his vehicle on the

C

night of May 12. Uppal, who leaves behind his wife and children, was taken off life support on May 21. The bond on Roberts was increased to $1 million on May 24, and investigators are now seeking a murder indictment against the suspect. Jones Roberts was indicted the week before for aggravated robbery, felonious assault and having weapons under disability. The Hamilton police arrested Roberts soon after the shooting, and investigators said he was the only shooter in a drive-by

incident in the 500 block of East Avenue. Uppal was taken to a hospital in Fort Hamilton and then airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital, according to news reports. World Sikh News reported that the 32year old Uppal hailed from Nadala village near Kapurthala in Punjab. He died after 10 days of fighting death. According to Butler County court records, Roberts was imprisoned in 2016 after he pleaded guilty to trespass, unlawful restraint and assault.

NEW YORK: Fashion designer Kate Spade, who was found dead in her apartment here, was depressed over her business problems and separation from her husband, which was causing her to drink a lot, said police officials. Law enforcement sources told tmz.com that Kate was alone in her apartment when she tied a scarf around her neck, attached it to her closet door knob and hanged herself in her bedroom. According to tmz.com, her husband, Andy Spade, was not in the apartment. The sources said that he told the cops, he was separated from Kate for a couple of months. Andy also told the cops that Kate “was drinking a lot,” and was depressed by business problems and their separation. As tmz.com reported, he wanted a divorce but she did not. It puts her suicide note in a somewhat different light. In the note, she tells her 13-year-old daughter it was not her fault, adding, “Ask Daddy!” suggesting that she blames Andy. — IANS

Follow these tips to Wear organic jeans to save the Earth combat summer heat IANS, NEW DELHI

NEW DELHI: Ditch oily food and alcohol for cold soups, sorbets and fresh vegetables to combat the harsh effects of summer on your body, say experts. Pooja Makhija, celebrity nutritionist, and Govindrajan, Head, Research and Development, Sugar Free, have suggested a few dos and don’ts to combat the harsh summer heat. Dos: Fresh fruits, vegetables and salads: Summer heat could lead to dehydration and dehydration could lead to electrolyte loss, which could leave you feeling lethargic, nauseous, exhausted and may even cause diarrhoea and constipation. Up your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables in ways that are creative and yum like finger foods or fun salads so that you beat the heat. Liquids and sorbets: Invite divine drinks into your life like kokum water, coconut water, chaas, fruit slushes and also frozen iced sorbets They work well to restore electrolyte balance and also provide healthy and interesting ways to pack in those nutrients. Water and infused water: Apart from increasing your levels of water consumption to about 10-12 glasses per day, you can also take care of both dehydration and nutrition by adding a small piece of fresh fruit like kiwi or strawberry or even basil to your water with a pinch of Sugar Free Green.

M

Don’ts: Excess protein: Proteins are harder to digest in general and coupled with heat and dehydration, could leave you feeling uncomfortable and possibly nauseous if consumed in excess. The recommended daily intake of protein is one gram per kilo of ideal body weight (the appropriate weight for your height). Alcohol: The harsh reality is that alcohol adds to more heat; it is a vasodilator, which means that more blood gushes through your system leaving you feeling hotter and sweatier. It is also extremely dehydrating. Oily food: When bodies are not hydrated, they are not always able to expel all by-products of heavier, oilier foods through the kidney. To counter this, the load of excreting oily food comes on to the skin - the second largest excretory organ - which will make you sweat more, dehydrate you further, kick-starting a vicious cycle.

ake your contribution in saving the Earth by using biodegradable sanitary pads, organic jeans and 100 percent vegan skincare products. This June 5th, the World Environment Day, lets make a conscious effort and change the dynamics of the depleting environment. Manohar Kamath, Head at Myntra Fashion Brands, who has introduced organic jeans to the brand’s collection, has given few inputs: v Use 100 per cent organic cotton jeans, recycled poly jeans where each pair uses between 9-21 bottles worth of plastic for production, and

reduced water jeans where each pair saves on 36 litres of water. Shankar Prasad, Founder at Plum, and Cyril Feuillebois, Founder at Kronokare, have given inputs on why it will be good to

switch to organic and vegan skincare products: v The products we are choosing for self care and better health are exposing us to even more chemicals and toxins causing more harm than good to our quality of living, health and wellness. However, a subtle shift in the consumer mindset is discernible, with more and more people are opting for chemical free, organic, natural or vegan products. Tanvi Johri, Founder at Carmesi, an all-natural sanitary pads brand, said that biodegradable pads, which are made of sustainable materials like bamboo fiber and corn starch, decompose within 6-12 months of being disposed off.

Having more friends can improve brain health IANS, NEW YORK

H

aving more friends and strong social connections may slow brain aging, preserve the mind and improve the quality of life, new research suggests. According to the study, brain function in the hippocampus—area associated with memory—declines with age. Exercise and social ties are known to preserve memory in this region in people. “Our research suggests that merely having a larger social network can positively influence the aging brain,” said lead researcher Elizabeth Kirby from the Neurological Institute at Ohio State University-

Arbaaz Khan ‘admits’ to betting

When summoned before the Anti Extortion Cell, Arbaaz not only ‘admitted’ to betting in the IPL for more than five years but also losing a large amount in the last IPL (2018) series IANS, THANE (MAHARASHTRA)

Filmmaker Sajid Khan may be quizzed

B

ollywood actor-producer Arbaaz Khan is understood to have admitted to betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) series and losing huge amounts, police sources said. Arbaaz has not only admitted to betting in the IPL for more than five years but also losing a large amount in the last IPL (2018) series and the habit had also affected his marriage with Malaika, (whom he subsequently divorced). His confession came before a team of Thane Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) which is probing the IPL betting scam since the past five-six years involving several billions of rupees, the sources said. Arbaaz, 50, who was summoned before the AEC, was confronted with a prominent bookie Sonu Jalan alias Sonu Batla, who was arrested and remanded five days ago, besides four other bookies nabbed late last month. Though officials refused to

THANE (MAHARASHTRA): After Bollywood actor-producer Arbaaz Khan, Bollywood director, comedian and TV personality Sajid K. Khan is likely to be questioned in the IPL betting case being probed by police here, an official said this week. In a related development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is keeping close tabs on the investigations being conducted by the Thane police in the IPL case, official sources said. Thane Anti Extortion Cell chief Pradeep Sharma told mediapersons that Sajid Khan’s Arbaaz Khan talks to press outside Thane Anti Extortion Cell in Maharashtra.

speak on record, sources said Arbaaz allegedly admitted to betting a huge amount and also losing a bigger amount in the IPL bets after which he was reportedly harassed and threatened by Jalan for coughing the amount. Arbaaz’s name first cropped up during Jalan’s custodial interroga-

tion. Recoveries of his diary with handwritten entries and some photographs led to Arbaaz being summoned by the AEC Chief Pradeep Sharma. An investigating officer told the media this afternoon that so far six accused have been arrested in the case while laptops and CDs recovered from them have

been sent for forensic analysis. While Arbaaz has said he knew Jalan since over five-six years, the diaries and other papers found from the bookie (Jalan) have revealed more names of prominent personalities involved in the betting scam. Emerging from the interrogations, Arbaaz said he had

replied to all the police queries and “was fully cooperating in the ongoing investigations.” On his part, the AEC Chief Sharma briefly said the police will take any further decision in the matter only after the full probe is complete, and Arbaaz may be called again if required.

MUMBAI: Anil Dhirubhai Ambani-led Reliance Entertainment is releasing Akshay Kumar-starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha in China on June 8, retitled as Toilet Hero in Mandarin for Chinese audiences. The film is co-produced through Reliance Entertainment and Friday Filmworks’ collaborative banner, Plan C Studios, with Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia. The release marks Reliance Entertainment’s return to the Chinese market after 3 Idiots, read a statement. Toilet Hero will release in over 4,300 screens across China, reflecting a 50 per cent higher screen count compared to its original release in India. It has already been screened to an overwhelming response at the Beijing Film Festival in April 2018, at an event attended by director Narayan Singh and creative producers Neeraj Pandey and Shital Bhatia. “Our issues and cultures bear a lot of similarity and I hope Toilet Hero gets the same appreciation and love in China,” said Akshay.

Veere Di Wedding: Trite, flighty and clichéd

T

he film Veere Di Wedding is about celebrating life with all its mistakes. Trite and flighty, packed with fluffy moments that swing erratically and then settles down on a predictable note, that is how one would describe this film. In the spirit of sisterhood, four friends Avni, Kalindi, Sakshi and Meera, years after they finish their school meet again in Delhi when Kalindi (Kareena Kapoor) who is now in Australia decides to get married to her long standing boyfriend Rishab (Sumeet Vyas). Avni (Sonam Kapoor) is a divorce lawyer. She is a spinster and her concerned mother is con-

stantly trying to get her hooked. Sakshi (Swara Bhaskar) is married and going through a rough patch. She is contemplating a divorce.

Meera (Shikha Talsania) married to John (Edward Sonnenblick) a foreigner against her parents’ wishes is now a mother of a young boy. And, Kalindi, coming to terms with her disintegrated family, is unsure of herself.

The plot rambles with the complexities that adorn the lives of the quartet — “family, relationship and rishte-daari”. There is a stage in the film when Avni screams, Bakwaas bahut ho gaya, baas. That’s the exact time when she voices the audiences’ sentiments too. That apart, somewhere down the line, the film hooks you on. And with Rishabh admitting that he is unsure of getting out of his family mess, you feel sad for the couple. How the other three friends rally around, to set things right for the couple, make for an interesting but clichéd viewing. —Troy Ribeiro
