ver four decades after he began his scientific engagement with gravitational science, Professor Abhay Ashtekar is set to receive the prestigious Einstein Prize conferred by the American Physical Society (APS). The prize for 2018, which carries an award of $10,000, is scheduled to be announced on October 23. Its citation reads: “For numerous and seminal contributions to general relativity, including the theory of black holes, canonical quantum gravity, and quantum cosmology.” Ashtekar is professor of physics, Evan Pugh Professor, Holder, Eberly Chair, and director of the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos at the Pennsylvania State University. The first Einstein prize was awarded jointly to Peter Bergmann and John Wheeler, who introduced

general relativity to American universities by creating research groups. Perhaps because the first award often sets the tone, subsequent prizes have come to recognize ‘lifetime achievements’. So the news was deeply satisfying,” Ashtekar told IANS. Ashtekar’s passion for physical sciences started while he was in high school in India. “At first I knew only Marathi literature — that is my mother tongue, and was the medium of instruction until I was 11. Then was exposed Hindi and English literature and realized how deeply literature is tied to specific cultures. What is considered great in one language or context could well be mediocre in another. At the same time, I learned Newton’s laws and universality of gravity — what makes the apple fall on earth also makes the planets go around the sun. This was stunning by itself,” he said. Somewhere along the line, he also recognized that although one of the main four forces of nature,

gravity is the weakest, yet it is so crucial to the way the universe formed and exists. “Gravity has two key features that other forces do not share. Unlike the weak and strong force, it is long-range and therefore key to the large-scale structures and phenomena. Electromagnetic force is also long-range. But because electric charge comes with both signs, the force can be both attractive and repulsive. “Large bodies like the sun and planets are all electrically neutral and so they don’t exert any electromagnetic force on one another. The dominant force between such bodies is therefore gravitational,” he explained. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of Chicago, Ashtekar went on to hold influential positions in France, Canada and India. Asked whether physicists in India are producing world-class research, Ashtekar said: “There are extremely talented

physicists in India who are making first-rate contributions to pure physics in areas I have first-hand acquaintance with. I am particularly pleased by the ‘LIGO-India’ project that is now placing India firmly in the front ranks of international efforts. The Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, in particular, will play an important role in the major discoveries that will be made

with the international network of gravitational wave observatories between 5 and 10 years from now. In this area India is ahead of China, for example.” “My colleagues in other areas of physics, on the other hand, tell me that this is not the case in their field; that there is a lot of good research but not enough ‘great’ research that gets published in the most visible journals,” he said.

Trump wants cut in federal agencies’ funds

Trump’s proposal comes after the Treasury Department reported that the federal budget deficit increased this year to $779 billion, or by 17 percent over last year IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump announced that he intends to reduce the American federal budget deficit by cutting financing to every government agency and department by 5 percent. “I’m going to ask each of you to come back with a 5 percent cut for our next meeting, I think you’ll all be able to do it... Get rid of the fat, get rid of the waste... It will have a huge impact,” Trump told the Cabinet at the White House on Wednesday, adding that he would be willing to allow “special exemptions” for one or two departments but some might have to undergo cuts larger than 5 percent. Trump’s proposal comes after the Treasury Department reported that the federal budget deficit increased this year to $779 billion, or by 17 percent over last year, the largest deficit in six years, reports Efe news. Although he did not get into specifics, Trump probably was referring to the cuts that will be in his administration’s budget proposal for fiscal 2020, which he will send to Congress at the beginning of next year.

US President Donald Trump (Photo: Xinhua)

However, although the President can ask his Cabinet members to cut their departments’ budgets, the federal funds are ultimately approved by Congress, quite apart from the wishes and desires of the president. Lawmakers have the freedom to include their own spending plans

I’ve never registered for any political party: Mattis WASHINGTON: US Defense Secretary James Mattis (in picture) has said that he never spoke to the President about resigning from his position and was continuing with his job, after Donald Trump called him a “sort of a Democrat” and said that the Pentagon chief may be leaving his post. Speaking to reporters en route to Vietnam, 68-year-old Mattis said he had never registered for any political party, having joined the military when he was 18 and adhered to its apolitical underpinnings as Republicans and Democrats alike came and went as Commander-inChief, the Washington Post reported on Monday. “I think he’s sort of a Democrat, if you want to know the truth,” Trump had said in an interview on CBS News’s “60 Minutes” aired on Sunday. “But Gen. Mattis is a good guy. We get along very well. He may

for federal agencies and the rest of the government, although the president has the right to veto any budget they approve. Three-quarters of the federal government’s operations have been financed through the end of September 2019, while the remaining agencies, including the Depart-

ments of Agriculture, Justice, Transportation and Homeland Security have been funded through December 7. Congress will try to avoid a partial government shutdown and approve a budget for those agencies before the end of this year. Trump had already asked for double-digit spending reductions for some federal departments, but this was rejected by Congress. The president’s first budget proposal, made last year, included eliminating 62 agencies, something that legislators completely ignored. Trump has blamed Democrats in Congress for seeking to raise spending on national programmes in exchange for fulfilling his wish to strengthen the military, but his tax reform has had one of the greatest impacts on increasing the deficit since it imposed significant tax cuts, especially on the wealthiest taxpayers. Despite the fact that he does not want to cause a government shutdown prior to the November midterm elections, the magnate might be willing to do so in early December, before the next budget negotiation deadline.

WASHINGTON: Former US Vice President Joe Biden said he hopes that the Democrats do not move to impeach President Donald Joe Biden Trump if they win a majority in the House of Representatives after the mid-term elections in November. In an interview with the CBS News on Wednesday, Biden said that the Democrats must wait for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings in the Russia probe before making a move on Trump, reports Efe news. “I hope they don’t. I don’t think there’s a basis for doing that right now... Let’s see where the investigation takes us,” Biden said. The former Vice President (20092017) was also not in favor of pressurizing Mueller to conclude the investigation before the November 6 election date. “You don’t put an arbitrary end to it. You wait till it’s finished, and let’s see what it has to say,” Biden added. According to the Constitution, an impeachment of a President requires a majority vote in its favor in the lower chamber of Congress. The House of Representatives is currently dominated by the Republicans. Impeachment requires a twothirds majority in the Senate, the upper chamber. A majority of surveys forecast a majority gain for the Democrats in the House of Representatives in the November 6 midterms but a Republican majority in the Senate is also most likely.

leave. I mean, at some point, everybody leaves... That’s Washington,” he had said. Mattis said he had not spoken to Trump about his comments and didn’t watch the interview. “We continue in the Department of Defense to do our job. It’s no problem.” “Where am I today? I’m a member of the President’s administration. And you have seen President Trump’s military policies, security policies, reaping significant bipartisan support,” the retired Marine Corps general said, according to a transcript released by the Pentagon. —IANS

No basis to impeach Trump now: Biden

federal judge has dismissed pornstar Stormy Daniels’ defamation lawsuit against US President Donald Trump. Daniels sued Trump after he said in a tweet in April that her story of a man threatening her not to come forward with her story of her alleged affair with Trump was “a total con job”, CNN reported. She argued Trump’s tweet, posted April 18, “attacks the veracity of her account” of the incident and that Trump’s statement was “false and defamatory, and that the tweet was defamation ... because it charged her with committing a serious crime”, District Judge S. James Otero wrote in his opinion on Monday. Trump had asked Otero to dismiss the lawsuit. “The Court agrees with Trump’s argument because the tweet in question constitutes ‘rhetorical hyperbole’ normally associated with politics and public discourse

in the US. The First Amendment protects this type of rhetorical statement,” Otero wrote. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has alleged that she Trump had an affair in 2006, after he married First Lady Melania Trump and she gave birth to their son, Barron.

Trump has denied the allegation. Daniels is also suing Trump and his former personal attorney Michael Cohen over the $130,000 payment made to her to keep silent about the alleged affair in the weeks leading up to the 2016 election. The ruling on Monday plays no role in that case, which continues to work its way through the court system. Trump’s attorney Charles J. Harder said in a statement to CNN: “No amount of spin or commentary by Stormy Daniels or her lawyer, (Michael) Avenatti, can truthfully characterize today’s ruling in any way other than total victory for President Trump and total defeat for Stormy Daniels.” Avenatti, responded to the ruling on Twitter and said: “Daniels’ other claims against Trump and Cohen proceed unaffected. Trump’s contrary claims are as deceptive as his claims about the inauguration attendance.”

Akbar quit as Minister of State for External Affairs ten days after several women came out with allegations of sexual harassment and molestation by him during his days as editor in the media. Two days after defiantly resisting calls for his resignation, the 67-yearold former Editor of the Asian Age, where much of the alleged harassment took place, made a brief statement announcing his resignation. Akbar said he deemed it appropriate to fight the charges against him legally in a personal capacity, two days after defying calls for his resignation when he returned from abroad on Sunday. NEW DELHI: A court here on Thursday admitted a criminal defamation suit filed by former Minister M.J. Akbar against journalist Priya Ramani, the first in a long list of female journalists to have accused him of sexual harassment. After taking cognisance of the defamation suit, the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at the Patiala House court listed the matter for October 31 when the statements of the plaintiff and his witnesses would be recorded. asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak on the issue. “Since I have decided to seek justice in a court of law in my personal capacity, I deem it appropriate to step down from office and challenge false accusations levelled against me, also in a personal capacity. “I have, therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of Minister of State for External Affairs. I am deeply grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for the opportunity they gave to serve my country,” Akbar said in the statement. On Sunday, after returning from a trip abroad, the Minister called the allegations levelled against him as “wild, baseless and false” and had threatened to sue the accusers. He had also asked why a storm had risen a few months before the general election and wondered whether there was an agenda.

“The President of Sri Lanka stated that he categorically rejected the reports in sections of media about him alluding to the involvement of India in any manner whatsoever in an alleged plot to assassinate the President and a former Defense Secretary of Sri Lanka,” the statement said. “He mentioned that the mischievous and malafide reports were utterly baseless and false, and seemed intended to create misunderstanding between the two lead-

Bring law to build Ram temple at Ayodhya: Mohan Bhagwat IANS, NAGPUR

R

aking up the pet saffron agenda ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha polls, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Thursday pitched for a grand Ram temple in Ayodhya “at the earliest” through law and accused “fundamentalist forces” of obstructing the process. Delivering his Vijayadashami speech on the 93rd foundation day of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he also criticized the Supreme Court verdict on Sabarimala entry for women of all ages while touching upon internal and external security issues. “The Ram temple must be constructed at the earliest at Ramjanmbhoomi. It should not be

delayed any more. The decision should be taken at the earliest. We say the government should bring

legislation and construct Ram temple. Whatever steps would be taken by sants in this regard, we

will stand by them,” he said. “Lord Ram does not belong to any community. He is not about Hindus and Muslims. He is an icon of India. His temple must be constructed, be it any way. The government should bring legislation.” Bhagwat’s remarks assume significance against the backdrop of the Supreme Court deciding to begin hearing the title suit of the Ayodhya dispute from October 29. The VHP has decided to launch a mass campaign in favor of building a temple. The RSS chief said a place was yet to be allotted for construction of the temple although all kinds of evidence have affirmed that there was a temple at “that place” — where the 16th century Babri

Masjid stood until it was razed on December 6, 1992. “The matter is in court. It is getting delayed and delayed. How long it will be delayed? The Hindu society is waiting since long for the construction of the temple. People know the facts about it. But some people do politics on it. They are trying to delay the process. Had politics not been there, the temple would have been constructed long ago. It could have been constructed with the cooperation and coordination of all,” he said. He said there was “an obvious game plan of a few elements” to stall a judicial ruling. Constructing the Ram temple “will also pave the way for an atmosphere of goodwill and oneness in the country”.

Jaisalmer falls off the tourist map

I

‘Me-too’ becomes a bad omen for BJP For the BJP, the outing of ‘dirty’ secrets by a number of intrepid women has come at an inopportune time AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

here are several reasons why the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is palpably uneasy about the “Metoo” movement against the sexual harassment of women at the workplace, especially when Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar is in the line of fire. As a newspaper has noted, several ministers literally ran away when asked about the allegations against Akbar (Akbar finally resigned on October 17). There have also been attempts to downplay the complaints both on the grounds of the delay in lodging them, as a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) luminary argued, and as an issue of concern mainly to the urban elite. One probable explanation for the BJP’s unease is the party’s general unwillingness to be seen as being pushed around. It doesn’t want to take a decision on, say, the dismissal of the minister as demanded by the Congress and others, including the media, lest it is seen as having been taken under pressure. The party apparently feels that such a step will hurt the party’s macho image. Another reason for the BJP’s hesitancy in, for instance, asking the minister to cut short his foreign trip is that it is unused to deal-

ing with an issue of private sexual (mis)behavior. This was the reason why it recused itself from the hearing on the case of gay rights in the Supreme Court, leaving it to the “wisdom of the court” to take a decision on its own. As at present, there was also similar prolonged silence after the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua till a BJP spokesperson accused the opposition of commu-

The party is usually at its articulate best when it can lambast the opposition for being anti-national as on the Rafale controversy. Or when it can hold forth on the “termites” identified in the National Register of Citizens dealing with illegal immigrants. Or when it can side with the women devotees of the Sabarimala

temple who are against the Supreme Court’s judgment allowing -- in its “wisdom” -- the entry of women of all ages into the shrine. But the “Me-too” movement, with its distinctly modern, feminist ambience, is not quite what a party guided by the patriarchal RSS can easily accept. Besides, as BJP MP Udit Raj has pointed out, the complainants are not all “goddesses” who have to be implicitly believed. What must be of concern to the BJP is the possibility that if the pro-women movement gains ground, it can lead to other pathbreaking initiatives such as criminalizing marital rape. Given the sensitive nature of the movement, the party is unable to dismiss it as “manufactured” dissent as it did in the case of those who returned their awards in protest against the government’s functioning. For the BJP, the outing of “dirty” secrets by a number of intrepid women has come at an inopportune time. The party was hoping to ride into the forthcoming electoral battles in the five states this winter on the issues of “termites” eroding the country’s demographic scene and the past misdeeds of the “naamdars” or opposition dynasts. But, suddenly, a group of bold women has queered the pitch for the party.

Speaking to the media at Brussels International Airport, after wrapping up his travel to Saudi Arabia and Turkey, Pompeo said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had “made clear that the Saudis had cooperated with the investigation that the Turks are engaged in, and that they’re going to share information that they learned with the Saudis as well,” reported Xinhua news agency on Wednesday. “There’s been a couple of delays, but they seemed pretty confident that the Saudis were going to permit them to do the things that they needed to do to complete their thorough and complete investiga-

18 killed in Crimea college attack MOSCOW: A teenage student detonated an explosive device and opened fire at a technical college in Russian-annexed Crimea on Wednesday, killing at least 18 people and injuring 40 others before turning the gun on himself, Russia’s investigative committee said. Investigators said 18-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov, a fourth year student, launched an assault against fellow students at his college in the Crimean city of Kerch before killing himself, the BBC reported. “We quickly established the identity of the young man who arrived at the college immediately before the incident,” the investigative committee said in a statement.

Although Pompeo said the alleged death of the journalist is “unlawful” and “unacceptable”, he said: “I do think it’s important that everyone keep in their mind that we have lots of important relationships between the US and Saudi Arabia.” Speaking of his visit to Turkey, Pompeo said that he had “a good, constructive” conversation with President Erdogan on the release of US pastor Andrew Brunson, Turkey’s purchase of Iranian oil and Syria as well, without giving more details about whether there is an agreement reached.

Written in lengthy blocks of paragraphs, eschewing character names for descriptions, Appiah admitted that “Milkman” could be seen as “challenging, but in the way a walk up Snowdon is challenging. It is definitely worth it because the view is terrific when you get to the top,” he said. Kerala tense over Sabarimala Women devotees prevented from undertaking the trek to the the Lord Ayyappa temple

Bhagwat criticizes SC’s Sabarimala decision

T

ension prevailed on October 18 a day after the opening of the short five-day pilgrimage season as the state observed a shutdown against the alleged police attack on protesters even as a senior member of the Sabarimala priest’s family urged women of the hitherto barred age group to respect tradition and not visit the Lord Ayyappa temple. While on October 17, a couple of women devotees were prevented from undertaking the trek to the hill temple and some women journalists were stopped from proceeding with their coverage amidst violence by activists of Hindu groups affiliated to the BJP and RSS, no women devotee of the ages that have been allowed darshan by the Supreme Court turned up on the day. On Thursday morning, Suhasini

Raj, who works as the India reporter for The New York Times, along with her colleague, a foreign national, managed to go past the Pamba gateway but was stopped midway by angry devotees who erected a human wall before her. “I had reached half way and then the protests grew stronger. I was hit by a stone and then we decided to return. The police had provided us all the security,” said Raj, who had earlier pointed out that she came to do her job to speak to devotees. Pathanamthitta District Collector P.B. Nooh told the media on Thursday afternoon that Section 144 was in force and would be there till Friday midnight. Police would provide security to any woman who wished to go and pray, he said. Of the 30 protesters, who was arrested on Wednesday, 20 were produced before the Magistrate Court in Ranni near here. They

were remanded to two weeks judicial custody. The arrested activists included a member of the Tantri family, Rahul Eashwar. A dawn-to-dusk shutdown backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party was called against Wednesday’s police attack on protesters who were opposing the entry of women within the age group of 10-50 years to the Lord Ayyappa shrine. At a few places in Kozhikode, Malappuram and here, protesters stoned buses of the Kerala State Road Transport Corp following which their operation was suspended. On the occasion of Mahanavami, all state and central government offices, banks and educational institutions were closed. Shops and markets also remained shut. There were poor attendance at the IT park here and in Kochi. Railway commuters faced the brunt of the shutdown as they failed to get taxis and public

NAGPUR: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat on October 18 criticized the Supreme Court’s decision allowing entry of women of all ages to the Sabarimala temple in Kerala, saying it was flawed as it did not consider all aspects and hence would not be easily adopted. “The decisions taken without considering all aspects, will neither be adopted in actual practice nor will they help in creating a new social order in tune with changing times and positions,” Bhagwat told Rashtriya Swayamsevaks on the occasion of Vijayadashmi in Reshimbaug here. Bhagwat said the situation that was witnessed in Sabarimala due to the apex court’s September 28 verdict happened only because of “the tradition that has been accepted by society and continuously followed for years was not taken into consideration”. “The idea was to have gender equality, which is fine. However, there should have been talks (with

vehicles from the stations. Speaking to the media at the temple premise, Chief Priest Kantararu Rajeevaru said: “We have the highest regards for women. And those who otherwise come to pray at the temple are treated with utmost respect. “We always respect the law of the land but in the wake of the apex court’s ruling, we humbly request women that they should not try to break the tradition of this hallowed temple.”

the followers of the tradition). The faith of crores of devotees was not taken into account.” “A large number of women, who follow the tradition, were not heard; their emotions weren’t respected. There has been no effort to discuss with the followers of the faith and that has given rise to unrest and divisiveness in society instead of peace and equality,” he noted.

The temple opened on Wednesday for the first time after the September 28 Supreme Court ruling allowing entry of women aged between 10 and 50. As part of the convention, the temple opens for five days on the first of every Malayalam month. It will now be open till October 22. Meanwhile, the Kerala Police warned of tough action against all those who spread canards on the social media about Sabarimala in the present situation.

Manohar Parrikar will not quit as Goa CM: BJP IANS, PANAJI

iling Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will not resign as the head of the BJP-led coalition government, Goa BJP President Vinay Tendulkar said this week, ruling out “rumors” that the former Defence Minister was likely to step down from his post due to ill-health. “There is a rumor which is being spread, that the CM will resign. This will not happen. He is a CM of the coalition for five years. He will complete that tenure and he will attend to work at office soon,” Tendulkar told reporters after a meeting of BJP leaders at the

party’s Goa headquarters here. “His health is fine. Doctors have advised him rest for two days. After that he will meet party officials, ministers and MLAs,” Tendulkar said. Asked about the sudden decision taken to relocate Parrikar from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi to Goa on Sunday, Tendulkar said: “The treatment being given at AIIMS will be continued in Goa.” Parrikar, being treated for advanced pancreatic cancer, was admitted to AIIMS on September 15. He has been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, New York and now Delhi for the last seven months.

Earlier, the Chief Minister’s Office in a statement said: “Parrikar’s condition has improved further. He had a chat with his family members... Doctors have advised him to rest for a week.” Parrikar’s absence from office due to health reasons has triggered political upheaval in Goa, with ruling allies stepping up pressure on the BJP to shed some of the top portfolios currently held by the Chief Minister. The Congress has also demanded that due to Parrikar’s ill-health, the state administration had come to a standstill and has demanded that Governor Mridula Sinha should dismiss the government.

EINSTEIN PRIZE FOR ABHAY ASHTEKAR The prestigious prize for 2018, which carries an award of $10,000, is scheduled to be announced on October 23 BY MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO

O

ver four decades after he began his scientific engagement with gravitational science, Professor Abhay Ashtekar is set to receive the prestigious Einstein Prize conferred by the American Physical Society (APS).

BRIEFS Indian killed in New Zealand car crash WELLINGTON: A 25-year-old Indian man has been killed in a car crash in New Zealand’s Queenstown, the media reported. Harpreet Singh, who hailed from Punjab, had come to New Zealand as a student seven years ago and moved to Queenstown 67 months ago, New Zealand’s news magazine The Indian Weekender reported.

Indian sacked in Saudi for ‘offensive remarks’ RIYADH: A Keralite expat in Saudi Arabia has been sacked from his job for allegedly posting offensive remarks on women amid the Sabarimala temple row, the media reported. general relativity to American universities by creating research groups.

Professor Abhay Ashtekar (Photo: Pennsylvania State University)

physicists in India who are making first-rate contributions to pure physics in areas I have first-hand acquaintance with.

Rehabilitating Syrian refugees in Germany AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI

A

s Europe continues to grapple with the problem of refugees fleeing war-torn Syria, an organization founded by an Indian is helping a small town in Germany in rehabilitating them. R Ventures Foundation, registered in Amsterdam, is helping the university town of Heidelberg in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg in rehabilitating the Syrian refugees by setting up an incubator to impart skills so that these people can become entrepreneurs and job creators. Founded in 2017 by Shantanu Prakash, an IIM Ahmedabad graduate and a member of the Global Futures Council on Migration at the World Economic Forum (WEF), the organization is focused on the intersection of refugees and entrepreneurship with the belief that refugees and displaced persons can help catalyze a new era of job creation and integration. So what kind of skills are being imparted to these refugees? “Currently, we are looking at more of the hi-tech area, innovation technology area, but it also

depends on who it applies to,” Prakash, who was on a visit here, told IANS in an interview. “Our idea is to really look at people who have a desire to become entrepreneurs, who are educated,” he said, adding that a lot of these people are already welleducated, but being refugees, they have to start from zero. In this connection, he drew a parallel with the situation during the 1947 Partition when many people migrating from newly-created Pakistan to India were highly educated but had to restart their

life from scratch. “Now, it would be a pity if a highly qualified engineer has to take up a job of a janitor or something,” Prakash said. “So, the idea is that we provide them a supportive environment. We give them the skills, how to create a business in a different country.” Pointing out that that there is the issue of cultural sensitivity and the rules of business being different, Prakash said R Ventures Foundation helps the refugees to create a business pitch.

“We have got a full curriculum for it, what to teach step by step, teaching them a whole variety of skills, how to build up a business,” he stated. “Our idea is that the graduates of this programme will set up businesses in Heidelberg or elsewhere,” he added. Prakash said that once these entrepreneurs become successful, people will write about them and then Germans and people of the rest of the world will know that the refugees are adding value to the society. So how did the whole idea of imparting skills while rehabilitating refugees come about?” “There was no compelling reason for us,” Prakash said on a philosophical note. “Maybe it was a calling. Maybe it was something that we were meant to do.” Prakash said that through his involvement with the WEF, he got to understand the contentious issues regarding refugees. “When I got deeper into it, I got more fascinated about it,” he explained. “And I thought that people are referring to this as a crisis rather than opportunity.”

INDIA CRUSH WEST INDIES India win second test by 10 wickets, seal series 2-0

ndia registered their tenth consecutive Test series win at home as Virat Kohli’s men crushed the West Indies by 10 wickets in the second and final cricket Test at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here. Once again, it was a cakewalk for India in the second innings after being handed a paltry 72-run target by the tourists. Openers Prithvi Shaw (33 not out) and Lokesh Rahul (33 not out) guided the side home with ease in just 16.1 overs on the third day of the Test. After scoring 367 runs in their first innings in reply to the West Indies’ 311, India bowled out the visitors for 127 runs in the second

Bolt continues football career SYDNEY: Former Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt has turned down an offer to join Maltese outfit Valletta FC, opting to continue his professional football trial at the Central Coast Mariners in Australia. “We wish Usain Bolt all the best with his football career. The offer is always on the table,” Valletta FC chief executive and managing director Ghasston Slimen told ESPN, reports Xinhua news agency. Although the eight-time gold medallist has received mixed reviews from football pundits in his first seven weeks at the Mariners, the fastest man in the world managed to bag two goals in a charity fixture against Macarthur South West United. innings on Sunday, setting themselves a 72-run target. Pacer Umesh Yadav was the wrecker-in-chief with match figures of 10/133 and became the third Indian pacer with a ten-wicket haul in a home Test. The right-armer, who had figures of 6/88 in the first innings, bagged four wickets in the second innings conceding 45 runs and was also adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’. India had crushed the tourists by an innings and 272 runs in the first Test at Rajkot. India resumed the proceedings at 308/4 and lost five wickets in quick succession before Ravichandran Ashwin (35) and Shardul Thakur (4 not out) added 28 runs for the last wicket.

Pacer and skipper Jason Holder returned with impressive figures of 5/56 as he shattered the Indian lower middle order. Ajinkya Rahane (80) fell to Holder early in the morning session after adding just five runs to his overnight score. Holder then dismissed Ravindra Jadeja on a duck, while pacer Shannon Gabriel packed back a well settled Pant (92) to leave India reeling at 322/7. Kuldeep Yadav too fell cheaply to Holder after contributing six runs while Umesh Yadav (2) also failed to make much impact as India’s scorecard read 339/9. Ashwin and Shardul then showed some resistance to take their side past the 350-run mark.

HYDERABAD: India head coach Ravi Shastri lavished praise on Prithvi Shaw, comparing the teenage sensation with Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag. “He (Shaw) is born to play cricket. He’s been playing since the age of eight in the maidans of Mumbai. You can see all that hard work showing. He’s a spectator’s delight. There’s a bit of Sachin there, a bit of Viru in him and when he walks there’s a bit of Lara as well,” Shastri said. “If he can keep his head on his shoulders and keep the work ethic, he has a bright future,” Shastri added. Opener Shaw raced to a quickfire 52-ball 70 on the second day of the second Test to give India a flying start, days after cracking a century on debut. Shastri also praised pacer Umesh Yadav, who returned a match haul of 10 wickets to become only the third Indian pacer to achieve the feat after Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath.

“It can be a frustrating profession when you sit on the bench like Umesh for four Tests. Only 11 can play. He got his opportunity here and I’m very happy for him. It’s been done only four times (ten-for for a pacer in India),” the 56-year-old opined. Shastri also lauded 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, while backing K L Rahul to —IANS regain his touch.

Gabriel finally performed the last rites as he bowled out Ashwin as India managed to take a 56-run lead in reply to the West Indies’ first innings total of 311 runs. In the post-lunch session, the visitors looked to be in a hurry as

the Indian bowlers came all guns blazing to demolish the Caribbean top-order, who were tottering at 45/4 at one stage. The two sides will now clash in the five-match ODI rubber, starting October 21 in Guwahati.

Will retire when no emotions are involved: Gambhir DURGA CHAKRAVARTY, NEW DELHI

H

e has been in the cricketing field for over a decade now and is the only Indian to have scored hundreds in five consecutive Test matches. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, 37, says he will retire the day he feels there are no emotions involved in the game. Asked what keeps him going on the cricket field and if he has any targets before hanging up his boots, Gambhir told IANS over phone from Mumbai: “No, till the time I keep scoring runs, that makes me happy. You keep doing it. I think scoring runs, winning, coming back to the dressing room happy, being in the winning environment makes me happy.” “Till the time I have that passion in me, where I want to come back

to a happy dressing room, I want to be a part of that happy environment -- I am going to keep going, and the day I feel that there are no emotions involved in it then I

would think it’s time to go.” Born in Delhi, Gambhir started his career in 1999 with the Ranji Trophy and made his Test debut in 2004. In 2011, he started his cap-

taincy with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his captaincy, KKR won their IPL title in 2012 and again in 2014. Gambhir played an integral part in India’s wins in the finals of both the 2007 World Twenty20 (75 runs from 54 balls) and the 2011 Cricket World Cup (97 from 122). He was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2008. In 2009, he was the number one ranked batsman in ICC Test rankings and was the recipient of the ICC Test Player of the Year award. Has his professional journey been fulfilling or is there any vacuum he can perhaps fill? “You can always fill in something. There is never an end to your journey and probably the day I would feel that has been achieved, I obviously could not have continued playing,” he said.

ilmmaker Vikas Bahl moved the Bombay High Court this week with a Rs 10-crore defamation suit against his former Phantom Films partners Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane amid the #MeToo movement furore. Bahl, in a suit filed this week, sought direction from the court to restrain the two from making any statement about him to the media or via social media. The court this week posted the matter so that the alleged victim’s side of the story can also be heard in the court’s chambers, Bahl’s advocate Hitesh Jain told IANS. The ‘Queen’ famed Bahl was last year accused of sexual harassment by a former employee of the film collective Phantom Films, for an incident that took place in 2015 in Goa during the promotion of the banner’s movie ‘Bombay Velvet’. The allegation resurfaced as the #MeToo movement garnered steam in India, leading some others, including ‘Queen’ actress Kangana Ranaut, to point fingers at Bahl’s behavior towards women. Kashyap came out in support of the allegations in a HuffPost India report and also tweeted about it, while Motwane called Bahl a “sexual offender”. Bahl has said the defendants are “taking advantage of the ongoing #MeToo movement in the country”. Kashyap, Motwane, Bahl and

MUMBAI: Within a week of setting up a special committee on sexual harassment, the Producers Guild of India has made it mandatory for all members to sign a declaration affirming that laws around sexual harassment of women at workplace are instituted and implemented. Last week, the Producers Guild appointed a new committee, with producer Sneha Rajani as its head, to address the issue of sexual harassment at the workplace within the film industry. It called for an extraordinary general meeting to amend its by-laws,

as a result of which it has been made compulsory for all existing and new members to sign a declaration that Rajat Kapoor affirms that ‘The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013’ and any amendment/successor act thereof has been instituted and implemented in their workplaces, as prescribed by the law.

The second important finding is that the diet alone has beneficial effects on bone, even without exercising. —IANS

NASA’s Chandra Observatory swings back into action IANS, WASHINGTON

N

ASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory, observing the universe in high-energy light since 1999, is back in action after suffering a glitch due to the failure of the gyroscope and going into safe mode last week. The cause of Chandra’s safe mode on October 10 has now been understood and the Operations team has successfully returned the spacecraft to its normal pointing mode, according to the US space agency. “The safe mode was caused by a glitch in one of Chandra’s gyroscopes resulting in a 3-second period of bad data that, in turn, led the on-

Pichai goes public on China Search engine SAN FRANCISCO: Google CEO Sundar Pichai has for the first time gone public about his company’s China-centric plans and has stressed on its need to re-enter the Asian nation that has the world’s largest population, a media report said. Pichai was speaking at Wired Magazine’s 25th anniversary summit here in the US this week. Since China is an important market, Google is developing a censored search-engine for Beijing codenamed “Dragonfly” that would filter content deemed sensitive by its

ruling Communist Party regime. “We wanted to learn what it would look like if Google were in China. It’s very early and we Sundar Pichai don’t know whether we would or could do this in China but we felt like it was important for us to explore, given how important the market is and how many users there are,” The Verge quoted Pichai as saying. Information on “Dragonfly” project began surfacing in August.

momentum indication then triggered the safe mode,” NASA said in a statement late this week.

The team has completed plans to switch gyroscopes and place the gyroscope that experienced the glitch in reserve. Once configured with a series of pre-tested flight software patches, the team will return Chandra to science operations which are expected to commence by the end of this week, NASA said. On October 10, Chandra X-ray Observatory entered safe mode, in which the observatory is put into a safe configuration, critical hardware is swapped to back-up units, the spacecraft points so that the solar panels get maximum sunlight, and the mirrors point away from the Sun.

Chandra is 19 years old, which is well beyond the original design lifetime of five years. In 2001, NASA extended its lifetime to 10 years. The US space agency said that it was also continuing to work towards resuming science operations of the Hubble Space Telescope that on October 5, entered safe mode after one of the three gyroscopes (gyros) being used to point and steady the telescope failed. Gyroscopes help spacecraft maintain proper orientation. Scientists are currently performing analyses and tests to determine what options were available to recover the gyro to operational performance.

Grand Opening of Verandah Retirement Community

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL- VERANDAH Retirement Community has announced its Grand Opening on Oct 28th 2018. This will be the first multicultural community in the Midwest designed to celebrate both Indian & American lifestyles. The project is a planned unit development (PUD) with residential senior housing and a commercial lot fronting Irving Park road on a 12-acre property located in Schaumburg township. Excitement for this project has been building since 2016 when the project first started. Verandah received final approvals from the Village of Hanover Park, IL in Oct 2017. Construction started in March 2018 and is planned to progress in phases over the next 2 years. Verandah is a unique retirement destination community designed to celebrate both Indian & American lifestyles thru a fusion of cuisine, activities, entertainment, traditions and cultures. Verandah offers an equal housing opportunity for seniors from all backgrounds who wish to take advantage of this ‘east meets west’ philosophy. Verandah has many features, amenities and facilities which were thoughtfully designed to offer a convenient, worry-free lifestyle to the 55 years plus senior community. The emphasis was on providing a continuum of care which allowed for residents to be as active as possible but still have access to specialized services and facilities as health needs changed without having to leave the community. Verandah is located in Schaumburg township’s Hanover Park village. The location is central and close to new Elgin-Ohare expressway. Chicago’s Ohare airport is about 30 mins away and downtown Chicago is about 45 mins away. The area also has two excellent medical centers.

S

Verandah will offer townhomes & condominiums for sale with a huge Clubhouse and medical facilities for use of the residents. The homes range in size from 1450-2000 square feet for the townhomes and 6201200 square feet for the condominiums. The townhomes and condominiums are especially built for senior living and offer a convenient, low maintenance lifestyle. The housing will be offered at $200,000-$475,000 to accommodate various budgets & lifestyles. The base-price includes upscale finishes & all appliances. A variety of upgrades will be offered. The housing is especially built for senior living with all-ranch and first-floor master bedroom options. All exterior maintenance will be taken care off by the homeowners association fees in the range of $350-475 per month.

The Clubhouse will be the main attraction feature of the community. It is planned as a 20,000 square feet facility with a vegetarian dining room, community room, gym, computer room, library, beauty shop, theater. The dining facility will serve chef-made multicultural & Indian cuisine using fresh local ingredients for lunch & dinner daily. The Clubhouse will offer a full calendar of activities and entertainment options to provide many avenues for social interactions. The property will also offer extensive landscaped areas including a big pond, park, walking paths. The medical services will include a doctor’s office, physical therapy office, home-health service and an Assisted Living & Memory Care facility. “Our emphasis is on socialization of the seniors. Parents sue Restaurant for serving Alcohol to minors BY A STAFF WRITER UCSON, AZ- An Arizona restaurant is facing a lawsuit for allegedly serving alcohol to minors prior to a fatal crash that killed 23-year-old Mihir Dixit. North Italia restaurant and its parent firm Fox Restaurant Concepts LLC are among the defendants in the case that claims the restaurant served alcohol to driver Anthony Hall, 18, and his two companions shortly before their car crashed into a light pole, according to a Tucson.com report. One of the passengers, Dixit, a student from India studying at the University of Arizona, died at the scene of the late-night crash near North Oracle Road and West Auto Mall Drive in September 2017. Patterson, the injured passenger, and the late student’s parents are plaintiffs in the case filed Sept. 10 in Pima County Superior Court, the report said. The plaintiffs have requested a jury trial, it added. Hall also is named as a defendant. One of the plaintiff ’s attorneys said the driver, Hall, initially told police he’d been drinking at home before the crash, but a few days later, said one of his friends had been buying him “alcoholic drinks at North restaurant prior to the incident,” according to the report. Tests taken after the crash showed Hall’s blood alcohol level at two to three

senior community. At Verandah we designed many amenities & facilities to bring the seniors out of their homes and be involved in group activities, make new friends and enjoy their life some more” said Dr Anuja Gupta, founder & CEO. Construction started in March 2018 and will progress phases with townhomes planned to be built in 2018, condominiums in 2019 and medical facilities in 2020. The Grand Opening on Oct 28th will involve ‘unveiling’ of the Model Townhome. “By showing a Model Townhome on the property we hope that prospective buyers will find it useful to envision themselves living in the homes” says Dr Anuja Gupta. Praful Patel BY A STAFF WRITER EFFERSONVILLE, KY- The owner of the the Stop & Go gas station in Jeffersonville was shot and killed during a robbery late Thursday night. Det. Lt. Todd Hollis identified the store’s owner as 49-year-old Praful Patel. The Stop & Go is located on Allison Lane, right across the street from Jeffersonville High School. Police say they were sent to the station around 10:50 p.m. after a female customer called 911 to report that she was inside the store and there was no sign of anyone behind the counter when police got there, they found Patel dead in the office area of the store. In the surveillance video, the suspect can be seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt with the hood drawn over his head and the drawstrings pulled tight to cover his face. times the legal limit for driving, the police report said, the report added. The lawsuit accuses the restaurant of negligence, claiming North staffers served the trio two bottles of $200 champagne and two $65 bottles of white wine during a 90-minute visit despite Hall and Patterson being underage at the time, it said. A search of online records of Arizona’s

liquor department indicates that no disciplinary action has been taken to date against the restaurant’s liquor license, the report said. Hall was charged by police with one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault causing serious or permanent physical injury, it said.

Tired of Dizziness or Imbalance? You are Not Alone! We Can Help You! Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS) is the region’s #1 specialist for vestibular and balance disorders and the only private practice in Chicagoland’s northwest suburbs utilizing NeuroCom’s NASA-based Smart Equi Test System. Rupangi Patel is the co-founder and CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions (PTS), located in a state-of-the-art facility near Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall. "Our goal is to help people get back to their daily life as quickly as possible,” says Rupangi. She has been serving the northwest suburbs since 1990 and has worked with many of the leading area hospitals. Her passion for helping people led her to start her own clinic in 2005.

How does testing on the SMART Equi System evaluate my balance? Balance is a very complex interaction between the sensory system and brain. The Equi Test System helps us determine if there is a problem in the interaction between your sensory system – eyes, ears, sensation in your feet and joints – and the brain, which coordinates your movements. This equipment also allows us to compare your performance to that of other people your age who don’t have balance or vestibular issues. What does therapy consist of once my balance issues are determined? Our specialists set up a rehabilitation protocol for your functional limitation and quantify performance over time. This means better outcomes that carry over to daily living. The therapy consists of specific balance exercises, including head movements, changing surfaces,

Rupangi Patel is one of the few professionals in Illinois who specialize in the evaluation and treatment of vestibular disorders.

Vestibular problems can be debilitating and often go undiagnosed for a long time. If you suffer from dizziness or imbalance, we can help you! Our Integrated Balance Program is aimed at decreasing dizziness and loss of balance so you can fully participate in a vibrant and active lifestyle. changing visual environments, coordination challenges, stability and other exercises designed q to help your body habituate to a q challenged environment.

Utilizing the latest NASA-based technology and treatments, the PTS team is dedicated to providing the best care available to help your body regain health and well-being. At PTS we provide orthopedic, neurological and vestibular rehabilitation and have helped thousands of patients in the community. What is the SMART Equi Test System and how can it help me? The system was initially developed for NASA to evaluate how space flight affects balance control and inner ear function in astronauts. This equipment allows our rehab professionals to perform six tests that measure body movement and sway during different purposeful movements or when standing still.

How many treatments will q it take for me to see an improvement with my balance? Treatment requirements are determined with an evaluation q of your condition. Most of 4 our patients have seen a significant improvement in as little as one to two weeks.

Did You Know? Falling, fear of falling and lack of balance is not a result of age. Good balance is normal at any age.

Have you fallen in the past year? Do you take medications for two or more of the following: heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, anxiety or depression? Have you had a stroke or other neurological problem affecting your balance? Do you use a walker or wheelchair, or do you need assistance to get around? Do you experience a numbness or loss of sensation in your legs and/or feet? If you answered “YES” to one or more of these questions, you may have a balance problem.

You’re not alone! And We Can Help!
