WASHINGTON: The bodies of all four members of an Indian family, which perished when their sport utility vehicle plunged into a river in California earlier this month, have been found, the authorities said. Searchers recovered the submerged bodies of Sandeep Thottapilly, 41, and his daughter, Saachi, 9, from the Eel River in Leggett, California earlier this week, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said. A body recovered last week was later identified as Thottapilly’s wife, Soumya, 38. The body of the couple’s son, Siddhant, 12, was the last to be found, ABC-owned TV station KABC cited the authorities as saying. The family were on a road trip to Oregon and were returning to their home in California, when they went missing. They were reported missing on April 8 after failure to visit their relatives’ place in San Jose. Bodies of Thottapilly and his daughter were found inside the SUV lying submerged between four and six feet of water. The smell of gasoline coming from the water led divers to the vehicle, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said. The vehicle was encased in a large amount of sediment from the river current and it took hours for the car to be towed out, leading to the removal of the two bodies, the sheriff’s office was cited as saying by the New York Times. The family’s maroon Honda Pilot was seen falling into the river in northern Mendocino County from a pullout during an April 6 rainstorm.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj (Photo: IANS)

They had been traveling south from Oregon along Highway 101 when the incident occurred, officials said. "The vehicle attempted to pull over to the shoulder into a big pullout, and the vehicle came close to coming to a stop but ended up going over the edge and into the river," said Lt. Randy England of the California Highway Patrol. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had condoled the death of the four members. “My heartfelt condolences on the tragic deaths of Sandeep Thotapilly, Soumya and their two children,” she had tweeted. Stating that all the four bodies have been recovered from Eel river, she said that the government is helping their families in the visa process to enable their travel to the US. — IANS

he Roots Norka, a Kerala government agency that handles the affairs pertaining to the state’s diaspora, was this week approved by the UAE Embassy here to attest police clearance certificates of those wishing to go to the Emirates, an official said. Roots Norka Centre Manager Hari Kumar told IANS that it will immensely help Kerala residents desirous of working in the UAE. “Hitherto, the process was that the applicants had to present all certificates to the UAE Embassy here. But now, we will do this job for the applicants,” said Kumar. He said the centre gets around 100 certificates on an average for attestation daily. The applicants need not waste their time waiting in

queues at the embassy now, Kumar said. The police clearance certificate attestation was first done by a notary, before it was submitted to the Home Department. The certificate was then forwarded to the Ministry of External Affairs, and later handed back to the applicants for

submission to the UAE Embassy. “Now, once the applicants get the Home Department’s clearance, we will handle the remaining process. This will cut the delay by almost a week,” he said. The UAE is the most preferred destination for Keralites among all Middle East countries.

A source close to the investigation told Independent Online that police, who gained entry to the house by breaking burglar guards on a window, had found a bottle containing petrol in the house. The

family had moved into the doublestorey house on Larch Road, Willowton, less than two weeks ago. The older victims suffered severe burn wounds while the children sleeping upstairs died of smoke inhalation, police said. A neighbor, who did not want to be named, said that Manjra and his wife were working at a local wholesaler. The woman told the Mercury daily that her sleep was broken when she heard what sounded like footsteps on her roof. “I heard a man shouting Allah’ followed by screaming. I was too scared to even go and check what was happening.”

No direct talks yet between Trump, Kim Washington and Pyongyang have started direct talks at ‘very high levels,’ says White House IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he White House has denied any direct talks yet between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, though Washington has spoken to Pyongyang “at the highest levels”. The White House statement came minutes after Trump seemingly hinted that he has already spoken with Kim, Xinhua news agency reported this week. When asked by reporters if he had spoken directly with Kim, Trump had said “yes”. In the statement, issued after the confusing incident, the White House said, “In regards to talks with leader Kim Jong-un, the President said the administration has had talks at the highest levels” and added that they were not with him

Trump ‘will walk out’ if North Korea talks not fruitful WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that if his planned talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are not fruitful he will “walk out”, media reported. directly. Trump also said that Washington and Pyongyang have already started direct talks at “very high levels,” without specifying how “high” the level was. “We have had direct talks at very high levels, extremely high levels with North Korea,” Trump said.

I don’t get confused: Nikki Haley tells White House WASHINGTON: US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has hit back at the White House over claims that she had prematurely announced fresh sanctions against Russia, media reports said. Several administration officials said Haley got ahead of President Donald Trump’s decision-making when she said on Sunday that the US would level new sanctions on Monday targeting Russian companies that facilitated the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons program, reports CNN. The sanctions were yet to be announced. “She got ahead of the curve,” National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow told reporters on Tuesday near the President’s Florida estate, a day after a report claiming Trump “put the brakes” on plans for new Russia sanctions. “She’s done a great job, she’s a very effective ambassador. There might have been some momentary confusion about that.” Haley struck back later Tuesday that raised questions about the White House’s explanation of her comments. “With all due respect, I don’t get confused,” she said in a statement. A White House official said

reported. Trump said if he did not think the meeting would be successful he would not go, and if the meeting went ahead but was not productive, he would walk out. “Our campaign of maximum pressure will continue until North Korea denuclearizes,” he added.

Kudlow apologized to Haley for saying that she might have been confused. “She was certainly not confused,” Kudlow told The New York Times by telephone. “I was wrong to say that... Totally wrong. “As it turns out, she was basically following what she thought was policy. The policy was changed and she wasn’t told about it, so she was in a box,” he added. Meanwhile, a senior administration official told CNN that Trump was “annoyed” at the confusion. —IANS

He might have hinted at CIA Director Mike Pompeo’s reportedly top-secret visit to North Korea over Easter weekend as his envoy. The trip made by Pompeo was an effort to lay the groundwork for direct talks between the leaders of the two countries. No official con-

firmation of Pompeo’s visit has come yet. Trump was expected to meet Kim in May or early June. The venue of the meeting was still to be decided. Trump said that five sites were being weighed and none of them were located in the US.

Tension on the Korean Peninsula has thawed over the last few months. The South and North have agreed to hold an inter-Korean summit on April 27, the first meeting between the leaders of the two sides in 11 years.

Trump negotiates trade deal with Japan IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US President Donald Trump announced this week he is negotiating a bilateral trade agreement with Japan and that his country would only re-enter the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) if its member countries offered him a deal he could not refuse. “I don’t want to go back into TPP. But if they offered us a deal I can’t refuse on behalf of the US, I would do it. In the meantime, we are negotiating, and what I really would prefer is negotiating a oneon-one deal with Japan,” Donald Trump said at a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. However, Abe stressed his country’s position towards the TPP, saying that it “is the best for both countries,” although he acknowledged the US’s interest in a bilateral trade deal, Efe reported. Trump said that should his country reach a trade agreement with Japan, there will be talks about the possibility of ending tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, a move that Washington introduced in March to a number of countries, including Japan. Trump added that his primary concern at the moment is the “massive” trade deficit with Japan, which amounted to “from $69 billion to $100 billion a year.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. (File photo: IANS)

In fact, the trade deficit with Japan last year stood at $69 billion, far from the $100 billion that the US President claimed, according to the official figures by the US Department of Commerce. The two leaders made these announcements in a joint press conference at the tycoon’s private club Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, where Abe arrived on Tuesday to have meeting with Trump on his four-day visit to the US. Last week, the White House announced that Trump had asked the US foreign trade representative Robert Lighthizer and the economic adviser Larry Kudlow to “take another look at whether or not a better deal (with the TPP) could be negotiated.” However, Trump has shown little interest in negotiations that would

further complicate the matter, since the other 11 countries that negotiated the original TPP, with the then Barack Obama administration, have already signed their own multilateral deal, the so-called Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), or TPP-11. Trump has granted a temporary exemption until May 1 to Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, South Korea and the European Union. Japan has been left out of the exempted countries despite being one of the US’s major allies, and for that reason Abe is trying to make use of his visit to secure a place on that list, although Japan barely produces aluminum and the amount of steel exported to the US stands at only around 5 percent of its total steel exports.

decade after a bomb blast killed nine worshippers at the historic Mecca Masjid here, a NIA court on Monday acquitted all five Hindu activists accused. Within hours, the judge who ordered the acquittals resigned, citing “personal reasons”. While Congress and Majlis-eIttehadul Muslimeen (MIM) criticized the acquittals, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said the verdict exposed the appeasement politics of Congress. The National Investigation Agency court held that none of the charges framed against the accused, including Swamy Aseemanand, had been proved, a lawyer for one of the accused told reporters outside the court complex. Righwing Hindu activists Nabakumar Sarkar alias Swamy Aseemanand, Devender Gupta, Lokesh Sharma, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar alias Bharat Bhai and Rajender Chowdhary, against whom the charges were framed, were all acquitted. Hours later, special NIA court judge K. Ravinder Reddy tendered his resignation, surprising legal and

political circles. His letter was sent to the Chief Justice of the Hyderabad High Court. There was no information if his decision was linked to the verdict or some other issue. Swamy Aseemanand, a resident of Gujarat and head of Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, was earlier acquitted in the Ajmer Dargah blast case and is currently on bail in Samjhauta Express blast case of 2014. Devendra Gupta is the RSS pracharak from Bihar while Lokesh Sharma is a RSS activist from Madhya Pradesh.

The powerful explosion also injured more than 50 during the Friday prayers at the 17th century mosque near the iconic Charminar on May 18, 2007. Later, five more people were killed in subsequent police firing on the crowd outside the mosque. There were a total of 10 accused in the case and five of them were chargesheeted by the NIA. According to the chargesheet, the accused were “angered by terrorist attacks committed on Hindus and their temples”.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Tuesday hit out at the Congress for coining the term “saffron terror” to defame the Hindus “globally” and sought an apology from its top leadership, even though the opposition party had a day earlier denied the charge. It also cited a telegram sourced from WikiLeaks to attack Congress President Rahul Gandhi in which he had long earlier allegedly said that “saffron terror was a bigger threat than the Lashkar-e-Taiba”. “(Congress leaders) Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi should apologize to the Hindu community for defaming them globally and taking the Hindus for granted. You can’t take the Hindus for granted. We believe in development of all and appeasement of none,” Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Sambit Patra said at a press conference he addressed along with newly-elected Rajya Sabha member G.V.L. Narsimha Rao. Patra had on Monday also, accused the Congress of coining the term and sought an apology from its

leadership. However, the Congress had maintained that neither Rahul Gandhi nor any other party functionary had ever used the term “saffron terror” and that its political rivals were levelling “baseless allegations”. On Tuesday, Patra demanded an apology from former Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram for allegedly using the term “saffron terror”. The BJP leader said: “Rahul Gandhi and Chidambaram should hold a joint press conference and speak on the issue.” Dubbing Gandhi’s thinking as “antiHindu”, the BJP leader said a telegram sent in 2009 by then US Ambassador Tim Roemer to the US State Department mentioned that “Rahul Gandhi told the US envoy that there was some support for the Lashkar-e-Taiba in certain sections of India’s Muslims, but the bigger threat may be of the rise of radical homegrown Hindu groups which create tension”. —IANS

Cash crunch: Govt blames ‘unusual demand’ IANS, NEW DELHI

A

midst reports of a cash crunch and empty ATMs, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday sought to allay fears, saying “there is more than adequate currency in circulation”, even as the government blamed “unusual demand” for shortages in some areas. In a bid to tackle the “unusual” currency demand, the government has also decided to increase printing of Rs 500 notes by five times. Taking stock of the situation the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said there is sufficient cash in the RBI vaults and currency chests. Nevertheless, printing of the notes has been ramped up in all its four note presses. “Have reviewed the currency situation in the country. Overall there is more than adequate currency in circulation and also available with the banks. The temporary shortage caused by ‘sudden and unusual increase’ in some areas is being tackled quickly,” Jaitley tweeted.

At a hurriedly-called press meet, Economic Affairs Secretary S.C. Garg, said: “There is no cash crunch in the country. There is around Rs 18 trillion currency supply now, which is close to the circulation during the demonetization period. We keep Rs 2.5-3 trillion more currency in stock for excess demand.” He said there was unusually high demand for currency in the last cou-

ple of months. As opposed to an average demand of about Rs 200 billion a month, “in the first 13 days of April itself there was a demand of Rs 450 billion”, he said. In the last few days the government has pumped cash into the system to meet the demand, he said. “We still have a reserve of Rs 1.75 trillion.” “We have taken steps to increase

the supply of currency in case the demand were to go up further. To give you an example, Rs 500 notes — we print about 5 billion of notes per day. We have taken steps to raise this production five times,” Garg said. “Very soon, in the next couple of days, we will have a supply of about Rs 25 billion worth of Rs 500 notes per day. In a month, supply would be about Rs 700-Rs 750 billion. These notes alone can more than meet the demand of any month,” he said. Garg attributed the sudden cash demand to localized phenomena. “This unusual spurt in demand is seen more in some parts of the country like Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar,” the Finance Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. There were, however, reports of shortages in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Punjab as well. The ministry statement said the government, along with the RBI, has taken all steps to meet this unusual demand.

In 2018, Darjeeling tea planters hope for a better season

Mamata’s all-India plans get a setback Suspension of panchayat election by the Calcutta High Court is a blot on the state government AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he Calcutta High Courts decision to suspend the panchayat election process in West Bengal is a major blow to Mamata Banerjee, for it shows that her government has not been able to ensure even a routine administrative procedure like the peaceful conduct of an election campaign. The failure is a blot on a government which is not only in power with a comfortable majority, but also claims to be highly popular. What the judicial verdict has indicated therefore, is that the government has been either unable or unwilling to act against the Trinamool Congress cadres who have been accused by the opposition parties of preventing them from filing the nomination papers. To make matters worse, the State Election Commission has apparently been coerced by the government to withdraw an earlier decision to extend the time for filing nominations. From both the aspects of the rampaging cadres and the arm-twisting of a constitutional body, the government has emerged in extremely poor light. By allowing the situation to

deteriorate to such a level, Mamata Banerjee has done a disservice to her professed mission of leading the charge against the Narendra Modi government. Instead, the well-known street-fighting capabilities of the Trinamool Congress have again come to the fore. The party performed satisfactorily in the 2013 panchayat elections, winning 13 of the 17 zilla parishads and faring equally well in

By allowing the situation to deteriorate, Mamata Banerjee has done a disservice to her professed mission of leading the charge against the Narendra Modi government the gram panchayats, although there were also complaints about intimidation and rigging against the Trinamool Congress in that year, with 24 people dying in election-related violence. There is little doubt that the Trinamool Congress will have difficulty in winning a majority of the seats this year as well. But its fear appar-

ently is the extent of the gains which its latest adversary, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), may make. As is known, the BJP has been steadily improving its position in West Bengal at the expense of the Left and the Congress. In the recent by-elections to the Uluberia Lok Sabha and Noapara assembly seats, the BJP came second to the Trinamool Congress, pushing the communists to the third position, while Congress was nowhere. Although it is widely conceded that the BJP has a long way to go before it can pose a serious challenge to the Trinamool Congress, the latter is scared that a noticeable improvement in the BJPs position in the panchayat elections will enable it to build a base which will prove handy to the party in 2019 when it hopes to add substantially to its tally of two Lok Sabha seats (out of 42) which it won in 2014. However, the way in which Mamatas party cadres went about trying to stop the BJP in its tracks is damaging to her reputation because a leader who is thinking of putting together an alternative to the ruling dispensation at the Centre cannot afford, first, to appear unsure on her home turf and, secondly, of resorting to brawling tactics.

mid problems of a fund crunch, shortage of workers and rising cost of production, Darjeelings tea planters are keeping their fingers crossed for a relatively “better season” with favorable weather conditions, a stable political situation and a 10 per cent higher price for the premium variety first flush this year. Faced with an “unusual situation” arising out of the political crisis in the north Bengal hills last year, the industry had lost about 70 per cent of its annual production. All plucking and manufacturing operations in Darjeelings 87 gardens were suspended for over three months starting from last June due to an indefinite shutdown called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha demanding a separate Gorkhaland state. “Since June last year, there was no production. Darjeeling tea producers had to incur cost on account of revival of gardens, along with payment to workers without any revenue generation. The biggest challenge that we faced was

funds crunch,” Darjeeling Tea Industry (DTA) Chairman Binod Mohan told IANS. According to DTA Secretary General Kaushik Basu, the industry had to incur “an estimated almost $535 million of unproductive expenditure” on account of reclamation and revival of the gardens during September last year to March this year without any income. “Gardens became financially

Banks have shown reluctance in advancing credit to the industry as they have been treating it as risky. We have requested the Centre to look into the matter. Moreover, we had sought support from the Centre as relief, but there is no announcement so far from the government on this front,” Basu told IANS. However, there has been “a delayed start to the new season” this year due to cold weather conditions and reclamation of gardens, Mohan added.

nvestigators from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons entered the Syrian town of Douma in Damascus to determine if an alleged chemical attack took place there earlier this month, Syria’s state-run SANA news agency said on April 17. The OPCW had yet to officially confirm that its team arrived in Douma, although on April 15 Russia said inspectors would be able to enter the city the next day, Xinhua reported. Russian and Syrian units were to finish clearing the DamascusDouma road of mines planted by the Jaysh al-Islam rebel group, which controlled the town at the time of the alleged attack. On April 16, the OPCW said the inspectors were told by Syrian and Russian officials that the team could not access Douma due to “security issues”. Also on April 16, the US expressed its concern that further delay could allow Russia to manipulate the scene of the alleged attack, and called on all parties involved in

Turkey elections moved up to June ANKARA: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 18 announced that general and presidential elections were being moved up to June 24, almost a year and a half earlier than scheduled. Although the country’s political opposition had long warned that Erdogan was looking to hold early elections, the government had denied any plan to do so, promising that elections would go ahead next year, Efe reported. Erdogan has been in power since 2003.

Both Syria and its ally Russia had called on the OPCW to send a factfinding team to the site of the alleged chemical attack, which the US, the UK and France claimed was carried out by the Syrian government. in Syria, despite the fact that the OPCW team had yet to begin its investigation. The attack in Douma on April 7 reportedly killed at least 70 people, including around 40 allegedly showing symptoms of exposure to chemical toxins. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on April 15 said that the US-led missile strike on Syria was coupled with a campaign of lies at the UN Security Council, according to the state news agency SANA.

The “Politico/Morning Consult” poll showed that while 58 percent of the voters supported the strikes, only 23 percent opposed them. Mary Kom and shuttler Saina Nehwal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia earlier this month, while addressing the Indian diaspora, the second and final day of his visit to Sweden. Extolling the thought of India, Modi, addressing a gathering of around 2,000 people of Indian origin at the Stockholm University here, said: “The achievements of Mary Kom and Saina Nehwal make our hearts swell in pride.” While Mary Kom won the gold in the 46-48 kg category in

women’s boxing at the Gold Coast games, Nehwal walked away with two golds in badminton. In a special gesture, Modi also made the gathering give a standing ovation to Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven who was also present

Missing Indian family’s dead bodies found in US WASHINGTON: The bodies of all four members of an Indian family, which perished when their sport utility vehicle plunged into a river in California earlier this month, have been found, the authorities said.

— IANS

on the occasion. On his part, Lofven said that more than the Prime Ministers of the two countries getting along well, it was the people-to-people ties that mattered more. Sweden is home to over 20,000 people of Indian origin, including around 2,000 students. Modi and Lofven also held a bilateral summit following which India and Sweden signed a Joint Action Plan and an Innovation Partnership for Sustainability of the Future. India and Sweden also co-hosted the first ever India-Nordic Summit in which the Prime Ministers of Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and Finland also participated.

n Indian-origin family of five, including three children, has been killed in South Africa after their house was allegedly petrol-bombed by an unknown arsonist, police said. Aziz Manjra, 45, who had been living in South Africa for the past 25 years, his South African wife Gori Bibi and their three children — Muhammad Rizwan, 10, Mairoonisa, 14, and Zubina, 18 — were found dead in their Pietermaritzburg home this week, the South African media reported.

A source close to the investigation told Independent Online that police, who gained entry to the house by breaking burglar guards on a window, had found a bottle containing petrol in the house. The

family had moved into the doublestorey house on Larch Road, Willowton, less than two weeks ago. The older victims suffered severe burn wounds while the children sleeping upstairs died of smoke inhalation, police said. special report SPECIAL REPORT x

Modi warns Pak on terrorism The Prime Minister expresses concern over growing rape incidents in India during his two-hour long interaction at the historic Central Hall Westminster IANS, LONDON

I

n a veiled message to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that antics of those exporting terror and trying to backstab will not be tolerated and they will be answered in language they understand. He said Islamabad had been informed of the 2016 surgical strikes before these were announced to the media. Taking part in an interactive session ‘Bharat ki Baat, Sabke Saath’ at the historic Central Hall Westminster here, Modi referred to the outrage over multiple rape cases of minor girls in India and said such incidents cannot be tolerated. He took several digs at the opposition, particularly the Congress, and said that the pace of work of his government was much faster than of the previous UPA government. The interaction, which lasted for more than two hours, saw Modi highlighting achievements of his government in the past about four years to build electoral momentum for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Modi termed the surgical strikes of September 29, 2016 an answer to the exporters of terrorism. Referring to the Uri terror strike,

Modi said: “We will not tolerate those who like to export terror and those who try to stab at the back. We know how to give back strong answers and in the language they understand. Some cowards come and kill our jawans. Do you want me to stay quiet? Shouldn’t they be

replied in the same coin?” “The surgical strike was an answer to the exporters of terrorism, sending message (to Pakistan) that India has changed and their antics will never be tolerated. I am proud of my soldiers. The soldiers executed the surgical strike without making

a single mistake and with 100 per cent perfection. And they returned before sunrise,” Modi said. He said he had told the Army to announce the strikes to media after informing Pakistan. He said Pakistani authorities were initially hesitant to take the calls but came on

line around 12 noon the next day after which the media was informed about them. “...And look at our good intention. I told the army officer incharge that before announcing the news in India, he should inform the Pakistan army first about the strike and they may remove the bodies if they want to,” he added. Pakistan has maintained that no surgical strikes were carried out by India. New Delhi has been accusing Pakistan of sponsoring crossborder terrorism. Referring to the foreign policy, Modi said India was dealing with all countries in the world on equal terms and was taking independent decisions in its dealings with countries such as Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran. He said India has made its place in international fora and was setting the agenda. Referring to outrage over rape incidents, Modi said: “A rape is a rape. How can we tolerate this exploitation of our daughters?” He said comparing statistics of rapes in different governments was a worse way to deal with the issue and referred to his speech from the Red Fort where he said people need to teach their sons to treat girls with respect.

ith the aim to build a win-win partnership with Sweden making use of the opportunities offered by India’s development programs, the two countries signed a Joint Action Plan and an Innovation Partnership following a bilateral summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Swedish counterpart Stefan Lofven here. Jointly addressing the media here along with Lofven after their talks, Modi said that Sweden has been a strong contributor to the Make in India program from the beginning and recalled that the Swedish Prime Minister himself led a big business delegation to the Make in India summit in Mumbai in 2016. “The main theme of our discussions today was how to develop a win-win partnership between Sweden and India through the opportunities offered by India’s development programs,” Modi said. “As a result, we agreed to a Joint Action Plan and an Innovation Partnership.” Stating that innovation, investment, startups, manufacturing were among the main areas of cooperation between the two countries, he said

that attention was also paid to renewable energy, urban transport and waste management to improve the quality of life of the Indian people. Yeddyurappa, 75, a Lok Sabha member from Shivamogga in the state’s Malnad region, was the BJP’s first Chief Minister in Karnataka from 2008 to 2011 when he resigned following an indictment by the state ombudsman (Lokayukta) in a multi-crore mining scam. Sex scandal: TN Guv rules out resignation IANS, CHENNAI

T

amil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit ruled out his resignation in the wake of a raging controversy over a sex scandal in a college in the state involving an assistant professor, who allegedly sought to lure girls into sexual favors to “higher ups” in a leading university and denied he had anything to do with it. He appeared to keep the option of a CBI probe open, saying he would decide on it once the report of the one-man committee headed by a retired senior officer R. Santhanam is submitted. Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor in Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai in Virudhunagar district has been arrested on the charge of suggesting to some girl students that they yield themselves to keep the “higher-ups” in the Madurai Kamaraj University happy so that the college gets facilities. She is heard making the demand in an audio clip that went viral on the social media.

Banwarilal Purohit

In the audio clip, Nirmala Devi was heard saying that she was on the dais moving around at a function in which the Governor was present and she has access to top officials. However, no names were said in that audio clip. Responding to questions Purohit said: “I attend so many convocation functions. So many people move around dais. I have not seen her (Nirmala Devi’s) face till date. I don’t know that lady at all.” Purohit, who called an unusual

press conference to promise a fair inquiry into the college episode, was at the receiving end with reporters plying a number of questions saying the woman teacher has made repeated references to him and would he resign to stay away from the probe. He was also asked how the probe appointed by him would be fair. “My public life has always been transparent. You can also probe it. It is nonsense and rubbish,” he said. When some women reporters persisted with the question, he shot back: “I am of your grandfather’s age. How can you ask such questions? Have some respect for your Governor.” He also pointed out that the woman teacher had referred to the Governor as grandfather in Tamil. Asked about opposition parties’ demand for his resignation, Purohit shot back saying: “Let them do their job, I am doing my job.” DMK working President M.K. Stalin said a confusion had been created by the Governor ordering a probe in his capacity as Chancellor.

Release Guru Nanak film: SC The order came on a plea by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee which contended that there could not be portrayal of Sikh Gurus by mortal beings IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court this week refused to stay the release of regional film Nanak Shah Fakir based on the life of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev, saying the Constitution allows filmmakers to make any movie as long as it does not impinge on secularism. Refusing to interfere with its earlier order directing the states to ensure that no obstruction was caused in the release and screening of the film, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud said: “As long as the film does not denigrate Sikhism and it only seeks to glorify Guru Nanak Dev we will not interfere...” After the earlier apex court order, the film released on April 13. The court’s order came on a plea

by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) which contended that there could not be any portrayal of Sikh Gurus, their immediate family members and the Panj Pyaras by any mortal beings.

JODHPUR: Bollywood actor Salman Khan, out on bail in a 1998 blackbuck poaching case, has been granted permission to travel to the Salman Khan US, Canada and Nepal. Judge Chandra Kumar Songara of the Sessions Court gave the permission soon after Salman submitted a plea. His case was presented by senior advocate Mahesh Bora after brief arguments by public prosecutor Pokar Ram. Salman was granted bail in the poaching case on April 7 after being sentenced to a five-year jail term. The actor spent two nights in jail following the court’s verdict, after which he was granted bail. District and Sessions Court Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi had asked the actor not to leave the country without the court’s permission. Salman was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000. — IANS

Some people have created false face of Islam: Majid Majidi SUGANDHA RAWAL, NEW DELHI

I MUMBAI: Filmmaker Karan Johar says he feels honored to be the first filmmaker from India to have a wax statue at the Madame Tussauds. Karan recently tweeted a photograph of himself, holding a briefcase in one hand and a wax imprint of his palm on the other hand. A copy of his biography An Unsuitable Boy is also seen kept in front of him. “Honored to be the first filmmaker from India at the prestigious Madame Tussauds. Thank you to the entire team in London who worked tirelessly... Will have further details about when and where soon! Madame Tussauds,” he captioned the image. Details about the launch of his wax figure are still under wraps. Currently, Karan has a slew of films in his kitty, including Student Of The Year 2 and Kalank, which features a star ensemble including Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit-Nene, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt. — IANS

As senior counsel R.S. Suri, appearing for the film’s producer Harinder S. Sikka, said the producer and the SGPC representatives should meet and see what more can be done, the court asked the SGPC

counsel to consider the offer and directed the next hearing on May 8. The court also noted that Nanak Shah Fakir has got the National Integration Award in the category of regional films. Appearing for the Sikh body, senior counsel P.S. Patwalia, referred to a 2003 resolution of the SGPC, which was reiterated in 2015, that there cannot be a depiction of Sikh Gurus by any living being. Chief Justice Misra said “let the character playing Guru Nanak not take credit for it and let it be an abstract person”, adding that once a film has been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification, the court can’t interfere. Justice Chandrachud said no religion can say that “only our book would portray our religion and stop everyone from writing about it. This would encroach into secularism”.

slam is about friendship, kindness and peace, and far from roughness and terrorism that it has been lately associated it, avers Majid Majidi, the globally acclaimed Iranian director who once attempted to change the “false” perception of the religion with the film “Muhammad: The Messenger of God”. But he realized that the path is full of thorns. For Majidi, cinema has the power

to bring people together. “Cinema for me is a bridge between cultures. Cinema has great potential to bring different cultures together because cinema doesn’t have any borders. It can travel around the world and have a great effect on human beings around the world. Cinema can show different rituals, different cultures to different countries visually in the best way,” Majidi told IANS through a translator on phone from Mumbai. Some radicals issued a “fatwa”

against Majidi and Rahman in 2015 for the film, which was planned as a trilogy but there’s no update on it. Majidi recalled that it was a project close to his heart and he gave seven years of his life to make it. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker says he wanted to put focus on both parts of Islam — Shia and Sunni. “After long research around both parts of Islam — Shia and Sunni — talking with the religious people of both... I tried to make a film to get unity between these two,” he said.

ranian director Majid Majidi’s Beyond the Clouds, set in Mumbai’s underprivileged class, alternates between being shockingly tone-deaf and surprisingly on-point. It has moments that are sudden and true, making us realize; how sluggish many films are in making their points, and how quickly life can blind side us. These moments take place between Aamir (Ishaan Khattar) a self-assured 19-year-old drug peddler and his estranged older sister Tara (Malavika Mohanan). Their paths collide after Aamir, while on-the-run from the police in order to escape a drug bust, seeks his sister’s help. Their outbursts, either in Tara’s house or in the rickshaw while trav-

eling or in the jail where Tara is imprisoned for attempted murder, are all palpable. The rest of the film is guided by these moments. Full of emotional turmoil, these moments are not a “surprise” in the

sense of a plot twist, but a different perspective. It’s the kind of shift you find in the sudden insight of life. It’s about how you look at someone and realize that you have never really known them.

Ishaan Khatter in his debut, as the confident, happy-go-lucky Aamir is a treat to watch. Malavika Mohanan as Tara is equally enchanting. But since her journey is much simpler in comparison to that of her brother’s, her performance feels rather limited. The film seems like a forced narrative that tells the tale of the unfortunate siblings who try to coexist within their circumstances.

LA police chief honors Indian peace activist

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- On April 13, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck honored Mandar Apte, an Indian American peace activist, with a medal of honor and certificate to recognize the work done to promote peace and nonviolence in Los Angeles through the From India With Love initiative. In order to promote India’s ancient message of nonviolence as a solution to the growing problem of violence in America, Mandar produced a documentary film “From India With Love”. The film showcases the transformational experience of six victims of violence from America during their journey to India in search of new tools, inspiration and wisdom of nonviolence. The film was inspired by the journey to India taken by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when in 1959, he had visited India to study the teachings of nonviolence of Mahatma Gandhi. LAPD had hosted a community screening of the documentary film at Paramount Studios. The event was attended by over 300 members of the LA community including youth, educators, former gang members, victims of violence and police officers. Following the screening, Mandar led an interactive workshop on nonviolence using mindfulness practices for the attendees. Deputy Chief Kato (West Bureau LAPD) who attended the screening said “I truly enjoyed meeting you and believe that your documentary is a powerful tool that can help bring about change”. Raj Vora, a senior member of the Indian American community of Los Angeles and Founder of Beverly Hills Jain Social Group said “We are inspired and fully supportive of the work done by Mandar. This is the right time for promoting nonviolence in America and showcasing how our ancient Indian culture can play an active role”. Over 75 members of the community attended that screening, including LAPD senior management. The nonviolence workshop included profound meditation techniques. It was perhaps the first time in the history of South Central Los Angeles that the community members and police officers sat in absolute silence and prayed together for peace. LAPD plans to invite Mandar again in Summer to do community screenings across Los Angeles and promote the principles of nonviolence across the community.

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBUS, OH -- A Columbus, Indiana man accused of a hit-andrun death last year which killed an Indian American engineer and severely injured his wife, has been found guilty by a 12-member jury. Michael DeMaio, 37, accused of killing Anshul Sharma who was walking in a bike lane with his wife Samira Bhardwaj on March 26, 2017, was on April 9 found guilty of all four charges against him--two felony counts of leaving the scene of an accident and causing a death when operating a motor vehicle with a controlled substance in his system. DeMaio was also found guilty of causing serious bodily injury when operating a motor vehicle with a controlled substance in his system. DeMaio had testified during his trial that he was sleepy and closed his eyes momentarily as he swerved into the bike lane and struck the couple. He told police that his vehicle must have drifted off the road and that he woke up when he realized he had collided with something.

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL -- With the blessings of Pragat GuruHari Hariprasad Swamiji Maharaj, a new Shree Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Temple (Nutan Haridham) is soon going to be built in Schaumburg, Chicago. The temple has a prominent significance in the glorious Hindu culture. Religious discourses, pooja, bhajan-kirtan, aarti, etc. done in the temple, give devotees freedom from worldly affairs and give the experience of God’s divine blessings and joy. Lord Swaminarayan built grand temples and opened them up, without any distinction, for everyone to experience transformation. In this same divine tradition, Hariprasad Swamiji, believing in youth, has resolved to build grand temples to relieve the youth of today from the scourge of materialistic addictions, to free them from tension-laden life and to lead them towards a religious, holy and happy life. GuruHari Swamiji says, “The temple is

S

where the mind feels complete peace. When the temple will be built, it will promote harmony, peacefulness and unity in the family and the society.” He is constructing such grand temples in every country and every city to imbibe the values and traditions of the glorious Hindu culture in children so that the values of Hinduism remain protected in the coming generations. It is Swamiji’s blessings that everyone who come to the temple will experience transformation so that their mind, their body and their house will all become temple-like and God will reside in them. With such powerful blessings, this temple located at 540 S. Martingale Road, Schaumburg will become a beacon of spiritual harmony and peace throughout the Chicago area. The ground-breaking ceremony of such a divine temple will take place on May 12 when Hariprasad Swamiji, PremSwarup Swamiji and saints from Haridham will perform mahapuja and pray to Lord Swaminarayan for the wellbeing of all.

Islamic Center hosts Open Mosque Day BY A STAFF WRITER A P E RV I L L E , I L : T h e unseasonably cold, rainy April day did not dampen the enthusiasm of the guests as they poured into the Islamic Center of Naperville (ICN) to attend the Open Mosque Day hosted by the Islamic Center on April 15. They walked in from the cold to a warm, friendly welcome by about 80 volunteers from ICN who have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks to make this a successful event. “We really enjoy hosting our friends and neighbors from different faiths and we strive hard to make their visit to our mosque a memorable one” said Shoaib Khadri, ICN president. “This is our sixth Open Mosque Day and we saw a significant number of new people, which was very welcoming. The primary purpose of the event was to give people of different faiths an opportunity to visit a mosque, something they may have never had a chance to do, and learn more about their Muslim neighbors.” The 800-odd guests included students, church groups, elected representatives, school board officials, law enforcement officers, local girl scout troops, families with kids, and the elderly across various faith denominations. The format of the Open Mosque Day (OMD) was similar to the previous similar events with the main booths and food in the gym, the congregational prayers in the prayer halls, and presentations in separate rooms. A new addition to this year’s OMD was an inspirational gallery showcasing beautiful exhibits with verses of the Quran as well as Hadith –the sayings of Prophet Mohammed.

All the booths were laid out along the periphery of the gym with a large open area in the middle for people to gather, meet with a seating section facing a stage where continuous videos featuring the activities of ICN were played along with some snippets about Islam. The booth that always attracts a lot of questions was the “Islam and Extremism” booth considering all the negative perception of Islam in the public. The volunteers shared a lot of material that

clearly explained that aggression and killing of innocent people were clearly forbidden in Islam and how most violence carried out in the name of religion is actually politically motivated and had no religious basis. There were booths with free literature on Islam and copies of the Quran for people to take home, including a separate booth with literature in Spanish. Shahab Sayeedi, a board member of the ICN as well as an active member of the Outreach Committee, presented the basics

of Islam and answered guest’s questions. A new feature called ‘The Feedback Wall’, a large paper mounted board to solicit feedback from the guests, captured the mood of the visitors as many of them penned their thoughts in vibrant marker colors. Mayor Steve Chirico of Naperville, who spent a fair amount of time interacting with the hosts as well as the guests, commented: “Thank you for being such wonderful community partners.

NASA’s planet-hunter satellite launched ‘Tess’ will spend about two years surveying 200,000 brightest stars near the Sun to search for exoplanets IANS, WASHINGTON

N

ASA’s next planethunter, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Tess) successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida this week. The satellite launched at 6.51 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (4.21 a.m. on Thursday, India time). Tess, which is expected to find thousands of new exoplanets orbiting nearby stars, including some that could support life, was earlier scheduled to launch on Monday (4.02 a.m. on Tuesday, India time) but was rescheduled to conduct further Guidance, Navigation and Control analysis, NASA said.

Google to punish apps for its policy violations SAN FRANCISCO: Responding to a study that found nearly 60 percent of free Android apps used by children potentially violate a federal law, Google has said that it will take action if company’s policies are violated. “If we determine that an app violates our policies, we will take action. We always appreciate the research community’s work to help make the Android ecosystem safer,” technology news website Tom’s Guide quoted a Google spokesperson as saying. Google responded to a study by the International Computer Science

Institute in Berkeley, California, that found 57 percent of the 5,855 Android apps used by children and families are potentially in violation of a federal law designed to protect the privacy of kids under 13-years-old. The report said that these apps could be illegally monitoring children’s behavior online. The federal law, 1998’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), mandates privacy and consent requirements for website operators catering to children under 13. “We are taking the researchers’ report seriously. Protecting kids and families is a top priority and our Designed for Families program requires developers to abide by specific requirements above and beyond our standard Google Play policies,” the spokesperson added.

“We are thrilled Tess is on its way to help us discover worlds we have yet to imagine, worlds that could possibly be habitable, or harbour life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Over the course of several weeks, Tess will use six thruster burns to travel in a series of progressively elongated orbits to reach the Moon, which will provide a gravitational assist so that the spacecraft can transfer into its 13.7-day final science orbit around Earth, NASA said. After approximately 60 days of check-out and instrument testing, the spacecraft will begin its work, the US space agency added.

Tess will spend about two years surveying 200,000 of the brightest stars near the Sun to search for planets outside our solar system. For this two-year survey mission, scientists divided the sky into 26 sectors. The spacecraft will use four unique wide-field cameras to map 13 sectors encompassing the southern sky during its first year of observations and 13 sectors of the northern sky during the second year, altogether covering 85 per cent of the sky. Tess will be watching for phenomena called transits. A transit occurs when a planet passes in front of its star from the observer’s perspective, causing a periodic and regular dip in the star’s brightness.

NASA’s next planet-hunter, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), successfully launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. (Photo: NASA Television)

More than 78 per cent of the approximately 3,700 confirmed exoplanets have been found using transits. NASA’s Kepler spacecraft found more than 2,600 exoplanets, most orbiting faint stars between 300 and 3,000 light-years from

‘Facebook Login being abused’ IANS, WASHINGTON

S

everal third-party trackers are abusing Facebook Login, exfiltrating users’ data including name, email address, age range, gender, locale and profile photo, a new security research report has claimed. The unintended exposure of Facebook data to third party JavaScript trackers is not owing to a bug in Facebook’s Login feature. “Rather, it is due to the lack of security boundaries between the first-party and third-party scripts in today’s web,” said the report prepared by Steven Englehardt, Gunes Acar and Arvind Narayanan,

researchers at Freedom to Tinker — a digital initiative by Princeton University’s Center for Information Technology Policy. “We report yet another type of surreptitious data collection by third-party scripts that we discovered: the exfiltration of personal identifiers from websites through “login with Facebook” and other such social login APIs,” the trio wrote. Meanwhile, Facebook told the technology website Tech Crunch that they were investigating into the security research report. The researchers found two types of vulnerabilities: Seven third parties

abusing websites’ access to Facebook user data and one third party using its own Facebook “application” to track users around the web. British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica was found misusing users’ data collected by a Facebook quiz app which used the “Login with Facebook” feature. “We’ve uncovered an additional risk: when a user grants a website access to their social media profile, they are not only trusting that website but also third parties embedded on that site,” the report noted. The researchers found seven scripts collecting Facebook user data using the first party’s Facebook access.

Earth, using this same method of watching for transits. The new planet-hunter will focus on stars between 30 and 300 light-years away and 30 to 100 times brighter than Kepler’s targets, NASA said.

New algorithm may locate fake accounts NEW YORK: Scientists have developed a new generic algorithm based on machine-learning to detect fake accounts on social network platforms including Facebook and Twitter, an advance with considerable potential for applications in the cybersecurity arena. “With recent disturbing news about failures to safeguard user privacy, and targeted use of social media to influence elections, rooting out fake users has never been of greater importance,” said lead researcher Dima Kagan from the Ben-Gurion University (BGU) in Israel. — IANS

34 global tech firms sign key accord against cyber attacks IANS, WASHINGTON

T

op 34 global technology and securities firms, led by Microsoft and Facebook, have signed a “Cybersecurity Tech Accord” to defend people from malicious attacks by cybercriminals and nation-states. The watershed agreement will prevent them help governments launch cyber attacks against innocent citizens and enterprises. It will also protect against tampering or exploitation of their products and services through every stage of technology development, design and distribution. The 34 companies include Cisco, HP, Nokia, Oracle, VMware, Dell,

CA Technologies, Symantec, Bitdefender, F-Secure, RSA and Trend Micro, among others. “The devastating attacks from the past year demonstrate that cybersecurity is not just about what any single company can do

but also about what we can all do together,” Microsoft President Brad Smith said. The “Cybersecurity Tech Accord” is a public commitment among 34 global companies to protect and empower civilians

online and to improve the security, stability and resilience of cyberspace. “This tech sector accord will help us take a principled path towards more effective steps to work together and defend customers around the world,” added Smith who has been arguing for a “digital Geneva Convention” for years. The companies made commitments in four areas — stronger defense, no offense, capacity building and collective action. “The companies will do more to empower developers and the people and businesses that use their technology, helping them improve their capacity for protecting themselves,” said cybertechaccord.org.

New tool can combat HIV transmission TORONTO: Scientists have developed a new tool that can potentially help protect women from being infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The tool — a vaginal implant — decreases the number of cells that the HIV virus can target in a woman’s genital tract. High carb intake may bring back cancer risk IANS, NEW YORK

C

onsuming high amounts of carbohydrates and sugar prior to treatment for head and neck cancer may increase the patients’ risks of cancer recurrence and mortality, a new study reports. Patients who consumed the most total carbohydrates and sugars — in the form of sucrose, fructose, lactose and maltose — in the year preceding the cancer treatment were at greater risk of mortality from any cause during the follow-up period. Out of the 400 cancer patients in the study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, more

than 17 per cent experienced recurrence of their cancer, and 42 patients died of it.

Associations among carbohydrate intake and patient outcomes differed by cancer type and stage,

said lead author Anna E. Arthur, professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. However, eating moderate amounts of fats and starchy foods such as whole grains, potatoes and legumes after treatment could have protective benefits, reducing the patients’ risks of disease recurrence and death, he added. “Our results, along with the findings of other studies, suggest that diet composition can affect cancer outcomes,” said co-author Amy M. Goss, professor at the University of Alabama. Higher mortality rates, however, were found among people with oral cavity cancer.

80 genes that trigger Why middle-aged smokers should quit depression identified IANS, NEW YORK

IANS, LONDON

N

early 80 genes that could be linked to depression have been identified, a finding that adds to the evidence that it is partly a genetic disorder, says a study published in Nature Communication. Depression, a common mental disorder, is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 300 mil-

lion people are now living with depression, an increase of over 18 per cent between 2005 and 2015. “The study identifies genes potentially increasing the risk of depression, adding to the evidence that it is partly a genetic disorder,” said lead author David Howard, at the University of Edinburgh. Some pinpointed genes are known to be involved in the function of synapses, tiny connectors that allow brain cells to communicate with each other through electrical and chemical signals, the researchers said.

M

iddle-aged individuals who smoke could be at far greater risk of developing heart failure than those who never smoked, or those who quit, according to a new research. Heart failure is a chronic condition in which the heart does not pump blood properly. “Previous research has focused on smoking and atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, but not enough attention has been given to the other bad effects of smoking on the heart,” said Michael E. Hall, a cardiologist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in the US. The new study found that current smokers were nearly three times more likely to be hospitalized for

heart failure, while current smokers who smoked a pack or more a day were over three times more likely to be hospitalized. Current smokers’ left ventricle — the heart’s main pumping chamber — showed early signs of not working properly. These changes in the left ventricle’s struc-

ture and function are likely to put a person at greater risk of developing heart failure, Hall said. For the study, detailed in the journal Circulation, the team included 4,129 participants, aged 54 and of African-American origin. The study took into account high blood pressure, diabetes, body mass and other factors that might have biased results. Even those with a smoking history, equivalent to smoking a pack a day for 15 years, were also twice as likely to be hospitalized for heart failure. “As healthcare professionals, we would recommend that all patients quit smoking anyway, but the message should be made even more forcefully to patients at higher risk of heart failure,” Hall said.
