Trump pulls US out from Iran nuclear deal
Trump will not sign the waiver of nuke-related sanctions against Iran, but re-impose sanctions lifted against Tehran IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S President Donald Trump said this week that he will withdraw his country from the Iran nuclear deal, a decision that immediately drew global frustration and outcry. The pullout of the US from the deal, which eased sanctions on Iran in exchange for the country limiting its nuclear program, risks sparking an arms race in the Middle East, experts said, Xinhua news agency reported. In a televised speech from the White House, Trump announced the exit. He said that he will not sign the waiver of nuke-related sanctions against Iran, but reimpose sanctions lifted under the accord against Tehran and nations it has business links with. Trump repeated his rhetoric against Iran and the deal, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying it had failed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons or supporting terrorism in the region. The JCPOA “allowed Iran to continue enriching uranium” and “lifted crippling economic sanctions” on Iran in exchange for “very weak limits” on its nuclear activity, “and no limits at all” on its efforts to expand regional influences, he said. “The deal’s sunset provisions are totally unacceptable,” He said. “If I allowed this deal to stand, there would soon be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. Everyone would want their weapons ready by the time Iran had theirs.”
India calls for positive engagements NEW DELHI: After President Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, India this week called on all parties to “engage constructively” to resolve all contentious issues. “India has always maintained that the Iranian nuclear issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy by respecting Iran’s right to peaceful uses of nuclear energy as also the international community’s strong
interest in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in response to queries. “All parties should engage constructively to address and resolve issues that have arisen with respect to the JCPOA.” In a joint statement by French President Emmanuel Macron’s office, French, German and British leaders regretted the US decision.

European powers pledge to uphold Iran N-deal WASHINGTON: European leaders have pledged to remain committed to the Iran nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump dumped it as a “horrible, one-sided” agreement rooted in “fiction” and ordered the highest level of economic sanctions against Tehran. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday called Trump’s Tuesday speech “silly and
The US will impose “the highest level” of economic sanctions on Tehran, he said. “Any nation that helps Iran in its quest for nuclear weapons could also be strongly sanctioned by the United States.” As for the possible exacerbation of trans-Atlantic division over his decision, Trump only said that “we are unified in our understanding of the threat, and in our conviction
BRIEFS Trump may revoke reporters’ credentials
Hawaii could face volcanic smog
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump suggested this week that he might take away the White House credentials from news outlets whose reporting he deems unfair. “Why do we work so hard in working with the media when it is corrupt? Take away credentials?” the President said on Twitter. “The Fake News is working overtime. Just reported that, despite the tremendous success we are having with the economy & all things else, 91 per cent of the Network News about me is negative (Fake),” Trump said.
HONOLULU: Following the eruption of the Kilauea volcano, residents of Hawaii’s Big Island will now have to deal with steam-driven explosions, hazardous volcanic smog and acid rain, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has warned. The USGS’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on May 9 warned of possible explosive eruptions in the coming weeks because as the lava continues to sink in a lake inside a Kilauea crater, reports CNN. superficial” and said he was “making a damn mistake”. He also said that he did not trust Britain, France or Germany and would need “guarantees” before continuing the nuclear deal. Following Trump’s announcement, the UK, France and Germany urged Washington not to obstruct the implementation of the Iran deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive
Plan of Action (JCPOA). They said they would work with the other signatories to the agreement to stress continuing support for the accord. that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon.” Trump’s decision came on the heels of visits to the US by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. Macron even proposed a last-ditch side plan to appease Trump, but had failed to convince him. The White House
said later that Trump had “directed his administration to immediately begin the process of re-imposing sanctions related to the JCPOA,” and “the re-imposed sanctions will target critical sectors of Iran’s economy, such as its energy, petrochemical, and financial sectors.” “Those doing business in Iran will be provided a period of time to allow them to wind down opera-
tions in or business involving Iran,” it added. “Those who fail to wind down such activities with Iran by the end of the period will risk severe consequences.” US Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin noted in an announcement that “sanctions will be reimposed subject to certain 90 day and 180 day wind-down periods”. “At the conclusion of the winddown periods, the applicable sanctions will come back into full effect. This includes actions under both our primary and secondary sanctions authorities,” he added. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US “will be working with our allies to find a real, comprehensive, and lasting solution to the Iranian threat.” Trump’s decision to abandon the Iran deal signed between Iran and the six world powers of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US has sparked domestic and global concerns.
Schneiderman resigns amid assault accusations IANS, NEW YORK
E
ric T. Schneiderman, the New York Attorney General who rose to prominence as an antagonist of the Trump administration, has resigned hours after four women accused him of physically assaulting them in an article published by The New Yorker, the media reported. “It’s been my great honor and privilege to serve as attorney general for the people of the state of New York,” The New York Times quoted Schneiderman as saying on this week. “In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me. “While these allegations are unre-
Eric T. Schneiderman (Photo: mediad.publicbroadcasting.net) lated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading the office’s work at this critical time.
I therefore resign my office, effective at the close of business on May 8, 2018,” he added. His resignation represented a stunning fall for a politician who had also assumed a prominent role in the #MeToo movement. Two of the women who spoke to The New Yorker, Michelle Manning Barish and Tanya Selvaratnam, said they had been choked and hit repeatedly by Schneiderman. Both said they had sought medical treatment. Another woman, a lawyer, said she was slapped violently across the face. A fourth woman also said she had similar experiences. All the women in the article, who had been romantically involved with Schneiderman, said the violence was not consensual.

Walmart buys 77% of Flipkart The deal is expected to benefit India in providing quality, affordable goods for customers and create skilled jobs opportunities for small suppliers IANS, BENGALURU
I
n a mega deal in India’s ecommerce space, global retail giant Walmart Inc on Wednesday announced it was buying 77 per cent equity stake in the country’s largest e-tailer Flipkart for $16 billion. “Subject to regulatory approval in India, Walmart will pay $16 billion (Rs 1,07,662 crore) for 77 per cent equity stake in Flipkart,” the Arkansas-based firm said in a statement. The acquisition of the majority stake makes the $500-billion Walmart the largest shareholder of the city-based Flipkart group and will help accelerate its mission to transform e-commerce through digital technology. “The investment underscores our commitment to sustained job creation and investment in India, one of the world’s largest and fastestgrowing economies,” said Walmart. As part of the agreement, 33 per cent of the equity will be with Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal and

Walmart an opportunity to partner with the local leader in growing market, as the e-tailer’s leadership team will be supported by investment and technology partners. In an investors’ call later, Walmart Chief Executive Doug McMillon said India was a priority market for the retail behemoth as the country was the largest and
fastest growing economy. “As a company, we are transforming globally to meet and exceed the needs of customers and we look forward to working with Flipkart to grow in this critical market,” he said. The deal will benefit India in providing quality, affordable goods for customers and create skilled jobs and opportunities for small suppliers, farmers and women entrepreneurs. “India is one of the most attractive retail markets, given its size and growth rate and our investment is an opportunity to partner with Flipkart that is leading transformation of e-commerce in the market,” McMillon said. “Walmart is the ideal partner for the next phase of our journey and we look forward to working with it to bring our strengths and learnings in retail and e-commerce to the fore,” Bansal said. Founded in 2007, Flipkart has led the e-commerce revolution in the sub-continent, growing rapidly with digital technology.
BRIEFS SC slams ASI for not protecting Taj Mahal NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for not being able to protect the iconic Taj Mahal, and asked about the steps being taken to prevent the Mughal structure from being destroyed by insects and algae. A bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta was concerned after the ASI told it that the Taj Mahal was getting infected by insects which breed in the stagnant water of the Yamuna river that flows by the monument.

Before Modi, former Indian Presidents Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Gyani Zail Singh and Pranab Mukherjee had performed these special prayers employing the “khodasopachar rituals”, said Ram Tapeshwar Das Vaishnav, the priest at the Janaki Temple. Later, Nepal Prime Minister K.P.
Sharma Oli and Modi will jointly inaugurate the Ramayan Circuit Bus Route connecting Janakpur (Sita’s birthplace) to Ayodhya (Ram’s birthplace). The Ramayan Circuit is one among the 13 tourist circuits under the “Swadesh Darshan Scheme” of India. After Janakpur, Modi will fly to Kathmandu to hold meetings with Oli, President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun and leaders of the major political parties. The Indian Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of Arun III hydroelectricity project in Sankhuwasabha district of eastern Nepal, undertaken by India’s Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam, through video conferencing. The 900-MW project is expected to be completed in five years. India will spend $1.5 billion on it. —IANS
day after asking Prime Minister Narendra Modi to refrain from “ridiculing” Rahul Gandhi for declaring his ambition to become Prime Minister, the Shiv Sena on Thursday showered praises on the Congress chief, saying “he poses a challenge to the BJP” in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “This is not the Rahul Gandhi of 2014. He is a changed person now.
He has weathered abuse and criticism to emerge intellectually strong. “He can throw up a serious challenge to the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019,” the Sena cautioned in an editorial in the party mouthpieces “Saamana” and “Dopahar Ka Saamana”. Asserting that “Gandhi has acquired political strength and clout”, the ruling BJP ally pointed out that this was effectively demonstrated in the December 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls.

“The BJP leaders mock him in vulgar language, but Rahul Gandhi has always maintained Modi’s dignity as Prime Minister and never stooped low to criticize him ever,” the Sena added.

Catch 22: Winners may be losers KARNATAKA ELECTIONS: Conventional wisdom in Bengaluru gives Congress 95 to 100; BJP 85 to 90 and JD-S 35 to 40 in a hung house. If Congress wins outright, the credit must go to Siddaramaiah SAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI
I
t was what a film director would have described as a perfect take. “You are a beginner,” he said, grinding his teeth in simulated anger. “These are your days to learn.” A measured pause; he then emoted. “And you are insulting a former Prime Minister, a senior-most leader?” This was Narendra Modi chastising Rahul Gandhi, the Congress President. In the course of a fierce three-way election campaign, Rahul Gandhi, prompted by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, described the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) as the B team of the Sangh Parivar. Modi tore into Rahul. The manner in which Modi leapt to Dewe Gowda’s defense raised eyebrows. The outburst cast the JD-S as a party which had the BJP’s sympathies. If this creeping murmur reached Muslim enclaves which were once Congress vote banks, a section of the Muslim vote which would otherwise have travelled towards Gowda, would check itself. This would be ironical given that the “S” in JD-S stands for secular. After the demolition of the Babari Masjid in 1992, the disen-

chanted Muslim vote, walking out of the Congress fold, was waylaid by regional parties. In Karnataka, this vote took respite under the JD-S umbrella. Conventional wisdom in Bengaluru gives Congress 95 to 100; BJP 85 to 90 and JD-S 35 to 40 in a hung house. This is dicey — for the Congress. Deve Gowda, as kingmaker will immolate himself but not make Siddaramaiah the
Chief Minister. The moment Rahul looks for an alternative to Siddaramaiah in order to keep Gowda in good humor, a new game will have begun. If Congress wins outright, the credit must go to Siddaramaiah, whatever self-serving message the Congress coterie in New Delhi coaxes out of the result. In a state historically dominated by Vokkali-
gas and Lingayats, Siddaramaiah has brought under one umbrella the upwardly mobile Kuruba (Shepherd) community as one powerful group. By accepting a demand by a section of the Lingayat community (the late Gauri Lankesh, for instance) that they are “outside” the Hindu fold, he has created mild disruption in the Veer Shaivite, Lingayat ranks. BJP’s Yeddyurappa, a Lingayat, will face

Kavita Devi, who is better known in the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) international circles as “Hard KD”, is currently training and wrestling in Orlando, Florida, in the United States as part of her three-year contract with the WWE. Kavita, the first Indian woman to reach the international level in WWE, is no ordinary sportswoman. Even while being a professional WWE wrestler, Kavita is making sure that she dresses traditionally, the Indian way. When she fights in the ring, she is always

that music. By replicating, Jayalalithaa’s canteens, selling subsidized rice and pulling out every implement in the populist tool kit, Siddaramaiah has cast a wide net to ensnare the voter. At a time of Rahul’s frenetic temple-hopping, Siddaramaiah’s irreligious, Lohiaite persona is refreshing. What profit for Siddaramaiah to remain affiliated to the Congress if he sees regional actors play a greater role in post-2019 calculations? Who knows, he may like to consolidate his regional base. Siddaramaiah is not the only one who is basically averse for a ride in a messy coalition just months before 2019. Suppose Modi calculates that Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh can be bunched with 2019 to his advantage? That is why any long-term player will not be enthusiastic about the unstable Karnataka gaddi. But the eager bearer son of Deve Gowda, H.D. Kumaraswamy, is aching to ascend the throne even for a few months with BJP support, Gowda’s denials notwithstanding. From the Bengaluru throne, the Gowdas, BJP, everybody will then train their guns on Siddaramaiah. It is Catch 22 for all.

‘Trump meeting positive for Koreas’ The summit is an excellent first step toward promotion of the positive situation development in the Korean peninsula, says North Korean leader Kim Jong-un
North Korea frees 3 US detainees WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said three American citizens jailed in North Korea have been released and are on their way back home, in a move seen as a goodwill gesture ahead of a historic summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un. Trump tweeted that he would greet the men when they return on Thursday with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was in Pyongyang to arrange the planned talks. “I am pleased to inform you that Secretary of State Pompeo is in the air and on his way back from North Korea with the 3 wonderful gentlemen that everyone is looking so forward to meeting. They seem to be in good health,” he tweeted. He added that Pompeo had a “good meeting” with Kim and said a date and place have been set for the meeting between the two leaders. The Americans, Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song and Tony Kim, were able to “walk on the plane without assistance”, the White House said.

Kim Jong-un reached a satisfactory consensus on the issues discussed with the U.S. state secretary,” Yonhap News Agency quoted KCNA as saying. This is the first time that the North Korean leader officially spoke of the meeting with Trump, which has been scheduled for the end of May or the beginning of June and will be the first meeting in history between the heads of government of the two countries.

Conricus said Israel’s operation was one of the biggest air operations in recent years and the biggest against Iranian targets. The IDF spokesperson said that the strikes focused on destroying Iranian capacities in Syria while avoiding civilian casualties. None of the Israeli fighters suffered any damage despite anti-aircraft firing from Syria, he added. Singapore and the DMZ are the only two places Trump has floated in public as potential venues for the meeting. Speaking during a briefing on Wednesday, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders affirmed that a date and site had been determined.
KCNA said that Kim also “accepted an official suggestion of the US President for the release of Americans who have been detained” and gave an order “on granting amnesty to them for their repatriation”. Pompeo also delivered Kim a “verbal message” from Trump, adding Kim highly appreciated that the US President has shown “deep interest in settling the issue through dialogue”. Details of Trump’s message was not disclosed.

case on May 21. Before Friday’s sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Aubrey Sample read a written statement addressed to Purinton, from Sunayana Dumala, Kuchibhotla’s widow. Dumala said she hoped Purinton would one day realize the “magnitude of your mistake”. “I learned from the cops that the murder of my husband was premeditative and racially motivated,” she wrote. “In the few minutes that you have seen Srinu you built so much hatred for him that you decided he did not deserve to live ... I wish you had the ability to see beyond my husband’s skin colour and the beautiful and kind-hearted person underneath it,” she said. Purinton did not comment in court on Friday. But in a written statement filed at the time of his plea, he said he accepted full responsibility for the “grievous harm” he caused the victims, their families and the entire community. “I hope that this plea might, in some small way, help reduce the suffering that I have caused them all,” he said.

former US Navy veteran has been sentenced to life in prison for killing Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in a racially motivated hate crime at a bar in Kansas city in 2017. Adam Purinton, 51, was sentenced last week in Johnson County District Court, where he pleaded guilty in March to a charge of first-degree murder for killing Kuchibhotla. He also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree murder for shooting Kuchibhotla’s co-worker Alok Madasani and American man Ian Grillot, who had come to the aid of the two men. Purinton hurled racial slurs saying, “get out of my country” and “terrorist” before firing shots at Kuchibhotla and his friend at a bar in the city of Olathe on February 22, 2017. Kuchibhotla died after he was taken to a hospital while Madasani was injured. Grillot was also shot. He left the bar after the shooting and was arrested some 70 miles

Rahul’s PM remark is dynastic BJP lacks seriousness about ‘arrogance’, says Modi Karnataka: Rahul attacks PM IANS, CHIKMAGALURU (KARNATAKA)
I
n the final lap of his campaign blitz in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week launched a sharp attack against Congress President Rahul Gandhi, saying a “dynast” aspiring to be the Prime Minister was sheer “arrogance”. Addressing back-to-back rallies at different places in the southern state, which votes on May 12 to elect a new government, Modi said Congress leaders were arranging big meetings and conspiring to remove him. Taking a swipe at Gandhi, Modi said he was day-dreaming of becoming the Prime Minister in 2019. “There is a leader of Congress who thinks only about one thing throughout the day — how to be the Prime Minister. Such is the arrogance of the ‘naamdhaar’. This naamdhaar (dynast) doesn’t care about others who are standing in the queue. “He came like a bully, marched his way ahead when there were others waiting with so many years of experience. How can someone just declare himself the Prime Minister? This is simply nothing but sheer arrogance.” He said Gandhi with an “inflated ego despite losing 25-30 elections in the last four years” didn’t even bother about the leaders who have been waiting for 40 years and about other allies in the UPA. “The Congress has lost in almost all the

states in the last four years. But the ego of the ‘naamdhaar’ is still bloated. He says he will become the Prime Minister in 2019. Isn’t this his ego?” During an interaction with prominent citizens in Bengaluru, the Congress President had replied in the affirmative when he was asked if he was ready to be India’s Prime Minister if the Congress emerges as the largest party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Congress hit back at Modi asking him if he thought he was the only one who had the right to be Prime Minister. “Is Narendra Modi the only one with the right to be the Prime Minister?” Congress spokesman Anand Sharma asked.

Congress moves EC, seeks action against BJP leaders NEW DELHI: The Congress moved the Election Commission (EC) alleging BJP hand in a Bengaluru incident where counterfoils and voter IDs were recovered from a flat in Rajarajeshwari Nagar Assembly constituency, and demanded stern action against those responsible. The party also complained to the poll panel against alleged misuse of Income Tax authorities to intimidate and malign Congress candidates. The memorandum submitted to the poll panel accused the BJP of “a concerted conspiracy” and “fabricating and concocting and enacting fake midnight drama”, and said 9,746 voter cards were recovered from a flat “belonging to BJP associates”. “The raid was stage-managed. The flat belonged to a BJP leader. Those who conducted raids were BJP people, not EC or police. Two Union Ministers also reached there late in the night. This proves that the party is rat-
tled over imminent defeat. “We expect the Commission to take action immediately. FIR should be lodged and it should order the arrest of BJP leaders,” Congress leader Anand Sharma told reporters. The Election Commission in the wee hours filed an FIR after 9,746 voter ID cards were found in a flat in Rajarajeshwari Nagar constituency, along with around one lakh counterfoils resembling acknowledgement slips used for addition of names into electoral rolls. —IANS
C
ongress President Rahul Gandhi this week said the BJP has restricted itself to only mounting personal attacks on him and his party leaders during its Karnataka campaign and lacked seriousness about what they wished to deliver to the people in the state. “We put up a vision for the state while our opposition restricted itself to making personal attacks at the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah), (Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun) Khargeji, and myself and others,” Gandhi told the media here. “They (BJP) have not really named what
they want to do for Karnataka. What the Congress wants to do for the state is very very clear. “We made certain commitments and we delivered on those commitments and now we have prepared a manifesto that is truly the voice of the people here,” he added. Gandhi said senior party leader Veerappa Moily had prepared the manifesto. He crisscrossed the state, held meetings with thousands of people before putting it all together. “We put forward the essence of what the people are looking for in the next five years,” said Gandhi. The 47-year-old Congress chief said: “In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party built its manifesto inside closed doors in three-four days. They copied from ours. “So, there is a lack of seriousness among them about what they want to deliver... That I think is a huge difference.” “I am very confident that the Congress party is going to win the election,” Gandhi added. Gandhi, who finished his ninth leg of campaigning for the May 12 polls, said: “I have now been travelling around Karnataka for a couple of months. “It has been an honor... I have learned from the people of the state, from their spirit, from their perspective.” “The Congress has fought a very good campaign, we have all stood together, our party is completely united and we fought the campaign on fundamental issues,” he added.

This was the second win on the trot for Praneeth, who defeated Ahmad in this tournament Praneeth faced resistance from his opponent in the early stages of the first game before opening up a fivepoint lead at 8-3.
The Israeli fought back to gradually reduce the gap to 14-16. But the Indian won four points on the trot to snatch away the momentum before closing out the game. The second game also saw a tough contest in the opening stages before the Indian — who was consistent with his accurate placements and clever net play — started to enjoy the upper hand. Just like the opening game, Misha once again reduced the gap to 14-16 before Praneeth won five consecutive points to win the game and the match. Verma on the other hand, endured a tough day in office. He lost his first game before rallying to beat New Zealand’s Abhinav Manota 13-21, 21-9, 21-7 in 42 minutes.

Muguruza crashes out of Madrid Open MADRID: Garbiñe Muguruza fell short in her bid to become the first Spanish woman to win the Madrid Open tennis tournament, losing 62, 4-6, 6-3 to Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in a third-round match. Kasatkina was rock solid from the baseline on May 9 night and showcased some outstanding defensive skills against Muguruza, who showed plenty of heart but ending up committing far too many unforced errors over the course of the two hour, 28 minute match, reports EFE news agency. Muguruza fell behind 6-2, 4-2 after Kasatkina won a rare net exchange with a forehand volley winner, but the two-time Grand Slam champion then produced her best tennis of the match to reel off four straight games and even the contest at a set apiece. The Russian, however, used her heavy topspin forehand to seize control of the match once again, grabbing a 4-1 lead in the third set and nearly breaking Muguruza’s serve for a 5-1 advantage. The third-seeded Spaniard refused to go down without a fight though, staving off eight break points in winning that 28-point, 19minute sixth game and then breaking Kasatkina to make the score 4-3. —IANS

day after the BCCI poured cold water on their tradition of hosting a day/night Test at Adelaide, Cricket Australia this week confirmed playing Sri Lanka in a pink ball match at the Gabba in Brisbane early next year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had this week written to the CA refusing to play under lights after which the Australian board confirmed playing the Islanders in a day/night game in January. “We can confirm that we have received advice from the BCCI
that it is not prepared to participate in a proposed Day-Night Test in Adelaide this summer,” a CA spokesperson was quoted as saying. “Whilst we appreciate some Adelaide fans may be disappointed, we know how popular the Adelaide Test is and look forward to hosting India there in December. “We are committed to hosting at least one day-night Test each home summer as part of our continued focus to grow Test cricket, and we are excited about the Day-Night Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba in January,” he added.

of which is that it enhances cosmetically unwanted hair growth. The team carried out a full gene expression analysis of isolated human scalp hair follicles treated with CsA. This revealed that CsA reduces the expression of SFRP1, a protein that inhibits the development and growth of many tissues, including hair follicles. The inhibitory mechanism is completely unrelated to CsA’s immunosuppressive activities, making SFRP1 a new and highly promising therapeutic target for anti-hair loss strategies. The researchers then found that the compound WAY-316606, which was originally developed to treat osteoporosis, targets the same mechanism as CsA by specifically antagonizing SFRP1.

Balance-and-fall therapy-a boon for elderly
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Fear of falling, to some degree, has been reported to occur in 12% to 65% of older adults who live independently in the community and do not have a history of falling. Among Americans aged 65 and older, fallrelated injuries are the leading cause of death due to unintentional injuries, highlighting the importance of fall prevention as part of a safety program. One in three adults aged 65 and older falls each year, and falls are the leading cause of injury, trauma-related hospital admissions and death due to injury. Many older adults and their families do not understand the factors that put them at risk for a fall and are unaware of how to reduce this risk. Individualized multi-dimensional exercise programs yield significant improvements in balance measure, mobility measures, and decreased fall risk. An effective fall prevention program has been shown to reduce fall risks through a combination of exercise and risk education. Those who can benefit from this program are individuals concerned with falling, those that have experienced falls in the past, those who are physically inactive, those with muscle weakness and limited mobility, those who have difficulty walking, getting up from a chair or remaining steady on their feet, those who complain of dizziness or lightheadedness and individuals with problems with the senses, such as vision or numbness in their feet.
Dr Manu Vora’s cap has many feathers
C
The fall prevention program can treat conditions like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, chronic vestibulopathy, disequilibrium of aging, bilateral vestibular weakness from ototoxicity, vertigo of unknown etiology, Meniere’s disease, motion intolerance, postsurgical acoustic neuroma, cervical vertigo, peripheral neuropathy, various neurological disorders resulting in balance/dizziness problems and history of falls. If you have fallen in the last 6 months, if you have difficulty transitioning from sit to stand, if you have difficulty walking on uneven surfaces, if you have difficulty walking up or down steps, if you feel unsteady, weak or dizzy, then Physical Therapy may help to address these issues and improve your safety and quality of life. But, here’s the good news: Falls are preventable. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging, and there are steps you can take to improve your balance and decrease
your chances of falling. Muscle strength and flexibility, which are an imperative part of maintaining good balance, decrease with age, especially for sedentary adults, but these can be partially restored with the right physical therapy program. Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. Rupangi Patel PT, Co-founder/CEO of Physical Therapy Solutions Group, is a physical therapist with more than 31 years of experience gleaned over two continents. Cardiologist Arvind Gandhi
BY A STAFF WRITER UNSTER, IN -- A Lake County, Indiana Superior Court jury has determined that an Indian American cardiologist must pay out $3 million to a former patient on whom he performed unnecessary heart surgery. Munster, Indiana cardiologist Arvind Gandhi, who retired in 2014, has been accused of performing unnecessary heart surgeries on an estimated 293 patients. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the physician. In this particular lawsuit--the second to go to trial–plaintiff Gloria Sargent alleged that Gandhi in 2006 had unnecessarily recommended getting a heart device implanted. She sued the physician and the Community Hospital in Munster where Gandhi practiced, alleging pain and suffering from the un-needed surgery. A judge the following day dismissed the lawsuit against the hospital. Sargent, who had a history of heart problems, went to see Gandhi in 2006 after moving to Northwest Indiana from Florida. He recommended she upgrade her heart device, even though she had just had one implanted months earlier. But Sargent agreed to the procedure.

In India, 8-year-old Asifa was brutally raped multiple times for a week and then beaten to death. The family has been trying to get justice since January. Many more rape cases involving minor girls have been reported in the recent past. DSAA was founded on the belief that every child has the basic right to education, nutrition, love and care. It started with a common dream shared by its core team members, a common dream of the uplift and nurture of all the children of humankind in South East Asia.

Kevin Prasad, 31, and his friend Donovan Rivera, 25, are accused of killing Mark Mangaccat on April 25, outside his Daly City, Calif., home. He has been charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a firearm, conspiracy to commit a crime, and first- degree murder with a special circumstance of lying in wait. friends,” Seinn, who has a three-year-old daughter, told reporters. She said that Prasad had asked her out in the past, but she had never taken him seriously. Seinn and Mangaccat were planning to move to Las Vegas to begin married life anew. When Prasad found out about this, he confronted Seinn but she did not take him seriously, and thought he was joking. On the evening of the shooting--Seinn’s last
day on the job before moving to Las Vegas--Prasad and Rivera followed Mangaccat and Seinn back to their Daly City home. As the victim was backing the car in, with his girlfriend in the car, Prasad jumped out of the car and came running up and fired through the window while they were both there. Seinn was not struck by one of the five bullets that were fired. Prasad is originally from Sacramento, where his family still lives.

BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD, MS -- An Indian American doctor here has been convicted in federal court of illegally sharing private patient information with a pharmaceutical sales representative. Rita Luthra was convicted by a jury on April 30 in US District Court in Springfield of violating the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act and obstruction of a criminal investigation. She was acquitted of witness tampering. Prosecutors say in 2011 the gynaecologist allowed a sales representative from Warner Chilcott to access protected information in her patients’ medical files. She later lied to federal agents about her relationship with Warner Chilcott. Luthra’s attorney argued that his client did nothing wrong and blamed her office manager and the sales rep. The Department of Justice notes that the charge of violation of the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act provides for a sentence of no greater than one year in prison and/or a fine of $50,000 and one year of supervised release. The charge of obstructing a criminal health care investigation provides for a sentence of no greater than five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000. Luthra, who hails from Punjab, was the former director of Women’s Health and Education Center on the Mercy Medical Center campus. Luthra was also accused of pocketing $24,000 in improper “speaker’s fees” and meals paid by the pharmaceutical sales representative.

BRIEFS US doctors remove huge ovarian tumor WASHINGTON: A 132-pound ovarian tumor, measuring almost three feet, was removed from a 38-yearold woman from US’ Connecticut this year, said doctors involved in the case. The patient, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that the tumor began growing at a rate of about 10 pounds per week in November 2017. A medical team of 12 surgeons, removed it in a five-hour procedure on February 14 at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, said Vaagn Andikyan, a gynaecologic oncologist for Western Connecticut Health Network and a lead surgeon. —IANS
New protein linked to breast cancer identified TORONTO: Researchers have found that a protein, that, once deactivated, could prevent the spread of an aggressive type of breast cancer to other sites in the body — a process known as metastasis. In their study, published in the journal Cell Reports, the researchers demonstrated that a protein, AXL, influences the occurrence of metastasis in HER2-positive cancer, an aggressive type that accounts for 20 percent of breast cancers. In HER2-positive breast cancers, cells with high levels of AXL are more likely to detach from tumors to form metastases. The research was done on mice and with samples of tumor cells taken from cancer patients in Montreal, Canada. — IANS
populations, but is highest in individuals of European descent, which is also the population with the highest frequency of the cold-adaptive variant, the study said. The findings, published in the journal PLOS Genetics, suggest that adaptation to cold temperatures in early human populations may have contributed, to some extent, to the variation in migraine prevalence that exists among humans today. “This study shows how past evolutionary pressures can influence present-day phenotypes,” said study co-author Felix Key of Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. Within the last
50,000 years, some humans left the warm climate of Africa to colonize colder locales in Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world. “This colonization could have been accompanied by genetic adaptations that helped early humans respond to cold temperatures,” said Aida Andres, also from Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. To discover an evidence of this adaptation, the researchers took a closer look at TRPM8 — a gene that codes for the only known receptor that enables a person to detect and respond to cool and cold temperatures.
This molecule may combat chikungunya IANS, ROORKEE
R
esearchers at the Indian Institute of TechnologyRoorkee have identified a molecule that exhibits antiviral activity against the chikungunya virus, raising hopes of finding a new way to combat the mosquitoborne viral disease. Chikungunya causes severe fever and joint pain. At present, there are no drugs or vaccine available in the market to treat it. The antiviral activity achieved around 99 percent reduction in the
virus, said the study published in the journal Biochimie. The team used structure-based studies of chikungunya virus specific nsP2 protease to identify two molecules — Pep-I and Pep-II — that exhibited protease inhibitory as well as antiviral activity. Out of the two molecules, the researchers found PeP-I to be more effective as an antiviral molecule. “The nsP2 protease is a strict viral enzyme, meaning it is absent in humans, and thus, is an excellent antiviral drug target for chikungunya virus,” said lead

researcher Shailly Tomar, Professor at IIT-Roorkee’s Department of Biotechnology. One of the two molecules — Pep-I — has higher antiviral activity against chikungunya virus. The PeP-I molecule inhibits the enzymatic activity of nsP2 viral protein and in cell based assay proved to be
an effective antiviral molecule. “Derivatives of PeP-I and PeP-I like molecules are being developed that will be tested for their antiviral potential in animal model,” Tomar said. According to the researchers, any molecule that inhibits nsP2 protease should possess antiviral activity.
Daily aspirin may double skin cancer risk in men IANS, NEW YORK

Melanoma is a type of cancer that develops from the pigmentcontaining cells known as melanocytes. It typically occur in the skin, but may rarely occur in the mouth, intestines or eye. “These lower levels of protective enzymes suggest that a higher level of resulting oxidative cellular damage in men that might contribute
to the possibility of developing melanoma,” said study co-author Beatrice Nardone from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the US. Besides acting as a painkiller, aspirin has other uses as well such as reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. “This (the finding) does not mean men should stop aspirin therapy to lower the risk of heart attack,” Nardone stressed. According to the researchers, the result of the study, published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, were surprising because aspirin is often reported to decrease risk of gastric, colon, prostate and breast cancer.

‘My films should be worth people’s time, money’
A
ctress Disha Patani, whose Baaghi 2 has turned out to be a box office winner, says she doesn’t compete with other artistes in the industry and is instead focussed on being a part of movies that leave the audience happy and content. After making her Bollywood debut with M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Disha’s second film was Baaghi 2, which has set the bar higher for her. “My aim is to ensure that when people come to watch my movie, they should leave feeling happy, entertained and it should be worth their time and money,” Disha told IANS in an email interview.

Honored to play role of Nargis
M
anisha Koirala says she feels honored to play the role of Sanjay Dutt’s mother and late actress Nargis Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming film Sanju. Manisha interacted with the media on the sidelines of Yusuf Merchant’s book “Happyness - Life Lessons From A Creative Addict”. On being a part of Sanju, Manisha said: “I am really honored to have played Nargis Duttji in the film. It’s like any actress’ dream role. Though I have a very small role in the film... It’s a special appearance, but I am really excited to know audience reaction about my role and the film.” Sanju, a biographical film based on the life of Sanjay Dutt, is directed and written by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Jacqueline feted with PETA’s award
B
ollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez has been given the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India’s Digital Activism Award in the lead-up to National Technology Day, which falls on May 11. Her online actions for animals include using social media to ask her fans to support the #FreeGajraj campaign, an effort that helped free an elephant used by a temple. The elephant had been kept in chains for over 50 years. “PETA India is thrilled to recognize her (Jacqueline) use of social media for powerful animal rights activism and looks forward to standing beside her as she continues to blaze a better trail for animals,” said Sachin Bangera, Associate Director of Celebrity and Public Relations of PETA India.
Ranbir Kapoor to star in and as ‘Shamshera’
A
ctor Ranbir Kapoor will go all fierce and intense for the upcoming action-adventure film Shamshera, which marks his comeback to the Yash Raj Films (YRF) banner after nine years. A teaser of the project shows Ranbir leading an army of dacoits, and delivering the punch line of the film in a husky voice: Karam se dacait, dharam se azaad. “Shamshera is exactly the film I was looking for. While growing up watching Hindi commercial cinema, I had an image of what a film hero should be doing. Shamshera allows me to do everything that I had imagined and it’s a very exciting project for me,” Ranbir said in a statement.
