Trump is Republican nominee Donald Trump sailed to the 1,237-delegate threshold, with his home state of New York putting him over the top IANS, CLEVELAND

M

anhattan real estate mogul Donald Trump officially became the Republican Party’s presidential nominee on July 19 after a roll call vote overshadowed by dissent and apathy, media reports said. Trump sailed to the 1,237-delegate threshold, with his home state of New York putting him over the top, Politico reported. The results were declared on the second day of the Republican National Convention (RNC) here after Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., announced the 89 delegates that formally clinched the nomination. “It is my honor to be able to throw Donald Trump over the top in the delegate count tonight with 89 delegates,” Donald Jr. said, surrounded by three of Trump’s other

BRIEFS: Panama to ask US to declassify files WASHINGTON: Panama has said it would ask the US government to declassify files pertaining to the December 1989 invasion in which a military action led to the capture of dictator Manuel Noriega for drug trafficking and left between 500 and 5,000 persons dead, the media reported on July 21. The Panamanian government would submit the request on behalf of a special commission it launched to determine how many persons were killed, identify the victims and make a record of the human rights violations committed, Efe news reported.

Mateen was taunted for being Muslim WASHINGTON: Orlando gay nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people in an attack last month, was subjected to taunting at his work place for being a Muslim, documents said. While working as a security guard at the St Lucie county courthouse, Mateen was called "evil", a "towel head" and a member of a "blood sucking cult" by fellow security guards, International Business Times reported. The records — released on July 18 — revealed that Mateen, 29, had complained of being the victim of physical intimidation as well as religious and ethnic taunts.

children — Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany. “Congratulations Dad, we love you.” Donald Trump himself tweeted that it was a “great honor” and vowed not to let the country down, Politico added. “Such a great honor to be the Republican Nomi-

nee for President of the US,” he said. The business magnate’s official nomination is a new apex in the political outsider’s campaign to shake up Washington. His White House bid began last June with a widely panned, ram-

WASHINGTON: At least twothirds of Americans oppose the immigration proposals by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Gallup found in a poll. Trump has made stemming the tide of illegals a campaign priority, saying he would build a wall on the border with Mexico and deport illegal immigrants if elected president. The poll on July 20 showed that 66 percent of Americans oppose the idea of building a wall on the US-Mexico border, including 88 percent of Democrats, 66 percent of independents and 38 percent of Republicans.

Present evidence about Gulen: US IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US Secretary of State John Kerry on July 20 called on Turkey to present evidence that US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind last week’s failed coup attempt. “With respect to Mr. Gulen, we have consistently said to our friends in Turkey, our allies in Turkey, that we need evidence,” Xinhua quoted Kerry as saying at the Pledging Conference in Support of Iraq in Washington. “We have a very strict set of requirements that have to be met for an extradition to take place,” he

added. More than 290 people, includes at least 190 civilians and 100 coup plotters, were killed in the coup attempt that swept Turkey on

July 15 night but was foiled by July 16 morning. The Turkish government claimed the failed coup was organized by Gulen’s followers and has sent official request to the US government for his extradition. Kerry said he had asked his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to send evidence about Gulen’s alleged involvement in the attempted coup, rather than “allegations”, adding that “we need to have evidence which we can then make a judgment about.” The top US diplomat also said that the US supported the Turkish government’s putdown of the coup attempt.

bling speech in which he blasted Mexicans as “rapists” and pledged to build a wall on the southern border that Mexico will pay for, Politico noted. Donald Trump’s campaign has seemingly endured strife almost daily since its inception. Republican leaders were slow to back his campaign and have continued to condemn his controversial rhetoric and actions. But his message has resonated with an overwhelming number of voters who have propelled him atop the Party. Indiana Governor Mike Pence was also formally nominated as the Republican Party’s choice for Vice President. Particularly outraged with the result was the Washington, D.C., delegation, which held its convention in March and attempted to award 10 votes to former hopefuls Marco Rubio and nine to John Kasich.

Writer apologizes for copying Michelle WASHINGTON: An aide for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump took responsibility for copying portions of First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 Melania Trump address for Melania Trump’s convention speech on July 18. A statement on July 20 by the campaign featured an apology from Meredith McIver and an offer of resignation. It added that her offer to resign was rejected.

Clinton promises reforms to end blacks’ fear of police IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Presumptive Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton promised on July 18 that if elected to the White House, she will promote reforms so that African Americans no longer fear the police, but also said she will make sure that anyone who attacks law enforcement officers is brought to justice. “This madness has to stop,” Clinton said about the death of three police officers at the hands of an ex-marine in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday, 10 days after another five policemen lost their lives in a shooting in Dallas, Efe news reported. Clinton gave a

speech at the annual NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Convention and dedicated her first

words to condemning the murders of police officers at Baton Rouge and to insist that the country has some “difficult, painful, essential

work ahead of us to repair the bonds between our police and communities”. Killing a police officer is a “terrible crime”... and “as President I will bring the full weight of the law to bear in making sure those who kill police officers are brought to justice. There can be no justification. No looking the other way,” she told the NAACP gathering in Cincinnati, Ohio. Though she said that guaranteeing police safety will be her priority as President, she acknowledged that many black Americans, like her audience at the convention, are also frustrated by the cases of African Americans being slain by law enforcement.

‘Pak behind Kashmir unrest’ Union Home Monister Rajnath Singh squarely blames Pakistan for deterioration of the situation in the Valley IANS, NEW DELHI

U

nion Home Minister Rajnath Singh on July 21 squarely blamed Pakistan for the present unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and also said the government will set up a panel to find an alternative to pellet guns used by security forces to control protesters in the Valley. “There can be no denying the fact that our neighbor (Pakistan) is singularly responsible for the present deterioration of the situation in the state,” Singh said while replying to a short duration discussion in the Lok Sabha. The terrorism that India is witnessing today is “Pakistan spon-

sored”, he said adding, that it was “created in the name of religion”. “However, Pakistan has failed to keep itself united,” he said. Singh denied that security forces were harsh while controlling protesting mobs in the Valley and hastened to add that personally he would always favor that minimum force is used to maintain control. The minister admitted, “there could be some aberrations” in the form of high handedness by security forces. On use of lethal weapons and pellet bullets, which have caused large number of injuries, including eye wounds, the minister said the Home Ministry will soon set up an expert committee to explore “alternative” use of such weapons.

Over 40 people have died in clashes between protesting mobs and security forces in the Valley since July 8. Referring to former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpay-

The terrorism that India is witnessing today is “Pakistan sponsored”, he said adding, that it was “created in the name of religion”. ee’s famous lines - “chingari ka khel khelna khatra hota hae (To play with fire is often dangerous), Singh sought to caution Pakistan on its

continued role to sponsor terrorism. Singh also said the NDA government at the Centre is pursuing Vajpayee’s roadmap of “Kashmiriyat, Jamhooriyat and Insaniyat (Kashmiri spirit, democracy and humanity)” towards Kashmir but at the same time there is no room for “inhumanity and violence”.

The Home Minister maintained that the central government alone cannot bring peace in the troubletorn state and sought support from all quarters. He also named Hafiz Saeed and Syed Salahuddin — Pakistan-based terror heads — for fuelling tension in Jammu and Kashmir.

Defamation case: Rahul may face trial IANS, NEW DELHI

T LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers called off their agitation here against former Uttar Pradesh BJP Vice-President Daya Shankar Singh for his abusive remarks against BSP chief Mayawati after police assured Singh’s arrest within the next 36 hours. Lucknow’s District Magistrate Raj Shekhar met the agitated party workers and leaders and told them the police was looking for Singh after an FIR was lodged against him late on Wednesday night at the Hazratganj police station. After a categorical and timebound assurance by authorities, BSP leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui announced the agitation was being called off. The police conducted searches at about a dozen places to nab Daya Shankar Singh but met with no success. Sources say Singh is holed up at some place in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Following the outrage over the statement, the BJP late night expelled Singh from the party for six years.

he Supreme Court this week indicated that Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi will have to face trial in a defamation case filed by an RSS activist for allegedly accusing the organization of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. “You can’t make collective denunciation of an organization,” an apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra said, adding that the

case may be decided on merits whether Rahul Gandhi’s charge was for public good or not. The Congress leader has so far maintained that his statement blaming the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was based on a high court judgment and certain documents. The apex court said that the statement was arguably made on the basis of a high court judgment but the case must be decided on merits. RSS activist Rajesh Kunte had

filed the defamation suit in a Maharashtra court against Gandhi, who then moved the Supreme Court for quashing of the defamation proceedings. Hearing Gandhi’s plea, the apex court told Kunte that the purpose of the defamation law was not to promote litigation. On November 26, 2015, in response to a suggestion by the top court, Rahul Gandhi had refused to settle the defamation case with the RSS functionary and to give the whole controversy a “decent burial.

Una incident: Parliament witnesses protests IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he issue of Dalit unrest in Gujarat rocked Parliament this week as opposition members accused the government of being anti-Dalit. Both houses saw protests from opposition parties, even as the Modi government made statements in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha stressing that the Gujarat government took appropriate action to tackle the situation. While the Rajya Sabha lost the entire day to protests and adjournments, the Lok Sabha witnessed an uproar but the issue did not lead to adjournments. In the Lok Sabha, the highlight was a video clip that showed Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi dozing off when his party members

were protesting against the Home Minister’s response on the Dalit issue. Congress President Sonia Gand-

hi, addressing the Congress parliamentary party on Wednesday morning had announced that the party would take up the matter.

In the Rajya Sabha as soon as the house met for the day, opposition members demanded a debate on the issue. Even as Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien was scrutinizing the notices, opposition members trooped near the Chairman’s podium raising anti-government slogans. Clarifications came from Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot who said the Gujarat government has taken action against the culprits. The minister said an FIR has been registered and a probe was also underway. He also regretted the suicide by a Dalit, who was one of the five who consumed poison during protests in different parts of Gujarat. The minister added that the issue should not be “politicized”.

Security forces keep strict vigil in Srinagar as curfew continues in Kashmir valley. (Photo: IANS)

ban exposes Kashmir strategy The ban on newspapers included snapping of cable TV and stoppage of private cellphone services

SARWAR KASHANI, SRINAGAR

W

hen a senior cabinet minister and government spokesperson in no ambiguous terms tells editors of Srinagarbased dailies to shut, the decision to gag the media amid heightened security restrictions in the Kashmir Valley cannot be “local”. The minister, Naeem Akhtar — a former bureaucrat who is the education minister — had also explained on record why the newspapers were banned from publish-

ing their print editions. He was quoted by at least two Delhi-based newspapers and an international wire service saying the “reluctant”, “undesirable” and “temporary” measure was to avoid “multiplication of tragedies” in the restive Kashmir Valley, facing an unprecedented bloody crisis following the July 8 killing of 22-yearold Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani. Akhtar said Kashmir’s angry youth “get surcharged due to certain projections in the media", causing more street protests and use

of force by security forces -- resulting in a vicious cycle of violence. The ban on newspapers included snapping of cable TV — now resumed — and stoppage of private cellphone services as the government struggles to control the violent anger on the streets of the valley — under curfew for the 12th consecutive day on July 19. For the third day in a row on July 19, people in the valley did not get newspapers due to the gag, imposed on July 16 morning. The newspaper ban captured international headlines and the

news was widely reported by dailies across the world. For the international media, it became bigger than the bloodiest unrest seen in the valley. Sources close to Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti told IANS that "internationalisation of the Kashmir issue" prompted the state government to review the decision. The Centre, according to the sources, also rebuked the state government over the media ban. Mehbooba Mufti on July 18 afternoon called a meeting of her close aides and some senior cabinet colleagues, after “she realised the

mistake of banning the press and going public about it”, said an aide to the chief minister, privy to the meeting. Mufti's political advisor Amitabh Mattoo, after the meeting, called almost all the Srinagarbased newspaper editors and publishers, “apologising” and asking them to resume publications. The government’s flip-flop and Mattoo being economical with the truth behind the ban has once again exposed how clueless the state government appears on the method to control the Kashmir crisis.

n a day when AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal was seeking penance at the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, a political drama was unfolding in New Delhi that could change the course of Punjab politics ahead of the state assembly elections. The resignation of popular cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu from the Rajya Sabha less than three months after he was nominated to the Upper House of parliament by the BJP government at the Centre has opened up the political scenario in Punjab once

again. With a senior AAP leader confirming that Sidhu and his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu — a Punjab BJP

legislator who is also the chief parliamentary secretary in the Punjab government — were all set to join

the Aam Aadmi Party before the assembly polls, the sudden resignation of the BJP MP has cleared a lot of things. The AAP, which is posing a serious challenge to the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal and the opposition Congress in Punjab ahead of assembly polls, due nearly next year, could well be on course to crown Sidhu as its chief ministerial candidate. The AAP’s confidence in Punjab is not misplaced. It was Punjab’s electorate which gave entry to the AAP in the Lok Sabha in the 2014 elections. The party won four Lok Sabha seats — all from Punjab, which has a total of 13 in the lower house. Sidhu, three-time Lok Sabha

member from Amritsar, had been slighted by the ruling dispensation in Punjab — the Shiromani Akali Dal and its alliance partner BJP — in the past few years. The Sidhu couple has been critical of the Akali Dal-BJP alliance government in Punjab headed by the country’s oldest Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal. A popular JatSikh face, Sidhu paid the price of his run-ins with Punjab’s dominant Badal family. He had verbal duels with the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal and his powerful brother-in-law Bikram Majithia, who is the younger brother of Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.

Naveen, 34, one of those who returned here, told IANS that he could not come out of his home in Thongpiny area in Juba, the capital

of South Sudan, since Friday when he heard gunfire outside. “My neighbors residing there also faced the same situation and they are still stuck inside their homes. I heard news that the Indian government wanted to evacuate Indians from Juba. I approached the Indian embassy and have come back.” Another Indian, Anil Kumar told reporters that firing had intensified in South Sudan early this week. “For almost five days there was heavy firing and it was then

that we decided to return. Yesterday it was a quiet day, that made our movement to the airport easy,” said Anil Kumar. On arrival at Delhi, Singh said: “We’ve brought back 156 Indian nationals, of whom 85 deplaned at Thiruvananthapuram airport. I met Foreign Minister (Barnaba Marial Benjamin) and Vice President (Riek Machar) of South Sudan and they assured me of all possible help,” Singh told reporters after landing in the capital.

Khaleda Zia’s son jailed The High Court overturned a trial court’s verdict acquitting the Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader in a money laundering case IANS, DHAKA

B

angladeshi opposition leader and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman was on July 21 handed a seven-year imprisonment and fine in a money laundering case. The High Court overturned a trial court’s verdict acquitting the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader in a Taka 20.41 crore money laundering case, bdnews24 reported. The court also slapped a Taka 200 million fine on Rahman, who lives in London. The bench of justices Enayetur Rahim and Amir Hossain gave its decision on Thursday on an appeal by the anti-graft body -- Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). Rahman’s close business associate Giasuddin-Al-Mamun was also sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Taka 400 million, bdnews24 reported.

The ACC filed the case against Rahman and Mamun in October, 2009 for siphoning off the money to Singapore between 2003 and 2007. Rahman’s lawyer Zainul Abedin denied that his client was involved in money laundering. He said the defence will scrutinise whether there was any chance of an appeal. A pro-BNP lawyer, told The Daily Star that Rahman cannot

move appeal as he was a fugitive in the eye of law living in London on parole for eight years. Rahman, who faces trial for several charges, was arrested on March 7, 2007, during the Bangladesh state of emergency. In September 2008, after securing a bail from the Supreme Court, Rahman went to Britain citing medical reasons.

Rahman has been in London ever since and also attends some BNP events in Dhaka. The Bangladesh High Court directed the lower court concerned to issue conviction warrant against Rahman. Since “convict Md Tarique Rahman has been absconding” the sentence of imprisonment as awarded shall be executed after causing his arrest or when he surrenders before the trial court, it said, the Daily Star reported. The laundered money Taka 20 crore will be kept within Bangladesh Bank until realisation of fine, it added. The High Court also ordered the ACC to take necessary steps in accordance with law to prosecute Md Moyazzam Hosen, Chairman of Hosaf Group, Khadiza Islam, Chairman of Nirman Construction, Mayer Sairee, and Marina Zaman who were the parties in the process of laundering money and aided the convicted persons in gaining the laundered money, Daily Star said.

SHORT TAKES Thousands of people flee South Sudan KAMPALA: Thousands of people have fled conflict-hit South Sudan to Uganda following a recent clash between the rival armies in capital Juba, a media report said on July 20 citing the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. At least 2,900 persons had crossed into the neighbouring Uganda since July 15 in which more than 90 percent were women and children.

Pakistan observes ‘Black Day’ ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on July 20 observed a “Black Day” to express “solidarity” with the people of Kashmir, where over 40 persons have been killed in clashes with security forces following the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani. “Rallies and functions were held across Pakistan to draw attention of the world community towards the burning issue of Kashmir,” Dunya News reported. More than a third of Nice victims were Muslim PARIS : At least 30 of the 84 victims killed in the attack in Nice were Muslim, the French Catholic daily La Croix said on July 19. The newspaper added that 20 of those killed were of Tunisian nationality, the same as the truck driver Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who carried out the attack during the Bastille Day celebrations, Efe news reported. Speaking to the newspaper, the imam of the city and president of the Union of Muslims of the Alpes-Maritimes, Otmane Aissaoui, confirmed the death toll belonging to the Muslim community. One of the victims Bouhlel left

behind was Fatima Charrihi, a Moroccan of 62 and mother of 7 children, who was a frequent worshipper at the Rahma Mosque in Nice, where Aissaoui is a preacher. Among the Muslim victims were children, such as Mehdi, 12, whose twin sister is still in a coma, or Kylian, 4, who came from Lyon with her mother Olfa to attend the fireworks show, both deceased. Faced with possible reactions of hatred in neighbourhoods and schools, Aissaoui said that to defend coexistence against isolation it must be remembered that these people died together, regardless of their religion.

ver 100 Chinese Uighur Muslims have joined the Islamic State terrorist group owing to Beijing’s oppressive policies, including a ban on fasting during Ramadan or growing beards, a media report said on July 21. The report rejects China’s claim that external forces were to be blamed for the Uighur groups joining the IS or for planning attacks on Chinese soil, which claimed hundreds of lives in recent years. The report, based on the case studies of more than 3,500 foreign recruits in the IS that was leaked by a defector from the extremist orga-

nization, said these measures “could be a push factor driving people to leave the country and look elsewhere for a sense of belonging”. At least

114 of these foreign fighters were from Xinjiang, making it the region that sends the fifth highest number of recruits to the IS.

The president called on the nation not to worry, saying that they have taken necessary measures, including the economic ones. The state of emergency will take into effect after approved at the parliament. The failed coup attempt, which began on July 15, was crushed the next day; at least 290 people, including more than 100 persons were killed, authorities said.

mid uproarious scenes in the Maharashtra assembly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday made a detailed statement on the gangrape and murder of a schoolgirl which evoked memories of the gruesome December 2012 Delhi gangrape case, and assured stringent action against those responsible. While the government rejected an adjournment motion sought to be moved by Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, of the Congress, in the assembly, protests were held in several parts of Maharashtra condemning the incident which occurred on July 13 in Kopardi village of Ahmednagar district. In his statement in the assembly, Fadnavis announced that Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam would lead the trial and assured stringent action against the accused persons. ‘Goa pre-poll alliance decision in September’ PANAJI: A decision on a possible pre-poll alliance with other like-minded political parties in Goa will be taken only in September, state Congress President Luizinho Faleiro said on Monday. “We will be able to tell by September 30 whether we want an alliance or not. I do not think any political party in Goa -- whether the

BJP, MGP (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party) or any other party -- is talking of alliance. They are saying give us three months. I am also saying give us three months,” Faleiro told the media here. Faleiro refused to comment on statements by several Congress leaders for the formation of a “grand alliance” before the assembly polls likely in early 2017.

The Congress has eight legislators in the 40-member assembly in Goa. A majority of the Congress block units have ruled out the need for such a pre-poll tie-up ahead of the 2017 assembly elections. Thirty eight blocks, party units at the assembly level, have already rejected the need for the pre-poll alliance.

amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on July 20 urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to urgently take up with the Uttarakhand government the issue of installation of a statue of Tamil sage poet Thiruvalluvar in Haridwar. In a letter to Modi, the text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa requested Modi to accord this issue the highest priority and prevail upon the Uttarakhand government to resolve the

matter at the earliest. “It is learnt that the Thiruvalluvar statue is now lying in the Dam Kothi Guest House, Haridwar, in

an abandoned condition. The visuals of the statue in this condition beamed on television screens is causing outrage in Tamil Nadu,” Jayalalithaa said. She said BJP’s Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay had proposed the installation of the statue of Thiruvalluvar at Haridwar, and he had offered to raise the funds for the purpose. Thiruvalluvar is a celebrated poet believed to have lived between 3rd Century BC and 1st Century BC. He wrote the most popular Tamil literary works ‘Thirukkural’.

Confident India to face inexperienced Windies

CAS upholds ban on Russian athletes

India had won both their previous series in the Caribbean and the upcoming four Tests will give a brilliant opportunity to better that record IANS, ANTIGUA

A

confident India under new coach Anil Kumble will be aiming to claim their third successive Test series when they take on an inexperienced West Indies side in the first game of the four-match Test rubber at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium here on Thursday. India had won both their previous series in the Caribbean with a 10 margin (2006 and 2011) and the upcoming four Tests will give the Virat Kohli-led young side a brilliant opportunity to better that record. Meanwhile, the hosts haven’t won a Test series against anyone other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe, home or away, since August 2012 while India can bank on their 2-1 away win against Sri Lanka and 3-0 thrashing of South Africa at home late last year. Going into the first Test, the Indians had a decent outing in both the warm-up games against the West Indies Cricket Board President’s XI side, with both the batsmen and bowlers spending ample time in the middle. But it won’t be a cakewalk for the visitors as the track used for the practice games at St. Kitts was on

the slower side but with some bounce, which helped the spinners from either side while the pacers had to be satisfied with the limited movement available. From the time, Kohli took over the mantle of the Test team, India have mostly opted for a five-bowler strategy, a trend which is very likely to be continued in the first Test. With Lokesh Rahul scoring a half century in each of the two games,

the opening slot will be an interesting contest between him and southpaw Shikhar Dhawan, who also fired a half ton while Murali Vijay is almost a certainty. The middle order comprises of a more settled unit with Cheteshwar Pujara at one down, Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane at No. 4 and 5 with stumper Wriddhiman Saha at No.6. Rohit Sharma’s place in the playing XI depends on whether

India plans to play four or five bowlers. The pace bowling department will be spearheaded by the seasoned Ishant Sharma and is likely to include Umesh Yadav and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Mohammed Shami, who returned to competitive cricket recently may warm the bench for this fixture along with rookie Shardul Thakur.

LAUSANNE (SWITZERLAND: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on July 21 rejected the Russian Olympic Committee’s appeal against the ban on its athletes from track and field competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “CAS rejects the claims/appeal of the Russian Olympic Committee and 68 Russian athletes,” the CAS said in a statement, reports TASS. The verdict will not let Russian athletes, except long jumper Darya Klishina, take part in the upcoming Olympics in Rio. CAS secretary Matthieu Reeb, following the court’s relevant ruling, said the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) had no right to enter its national field and track athletes for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil. The secretary general noted that the ROC could appeal the ruling in the Swiss Federal Court. The executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will now take a final decision on the issue.

One of the greatest Indian hockey players of all time IANS, MUMBAI

I

ndia’s hockey legend Mohammad Shahid was known not just for his excellent dribbling skills, but also considered as one of the greatest players of all time. The 56-year-old, who was battling kidney and liver problems, breathed his last on Wednesday at a Gurgaon hospital. He was part of the Vasudevan Baskaran-led Indian team that clinched the gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The legend was battling for life after a bout of jaundice, and dengue made his condition worse. Shahid, who was born in Varanasi, made his first appearance for India in 1979 at the Junior World Cup in France.

Shahid made his first senior team appearance the same year in a four-nation tournament in Kuala Lumpur under Baskaran, after his inclusion in the team following his impressive performance in the Aga Khan Cup. His skills and love for the game caught the eyes of his seniors and

coaches. It was said that on the hockey field, if he was one of the most feared one, off it he was the most humble and down to earth person. During his playing days, besides his dribbling skills, Shahid was also known for his running ability and push which was as fast as a hard hit. His attacking partnership on the field with Zafar Iqbal was known to one and all. He was awarded the ‘Best Forward player’ at the 1980 Champions Trophy in Karachi. He was a member of the team that won the gold at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, silver at the 1982 Asian Games and bronze at the 1986 Asian Games. His skill and ability

‘Kabali’ frenzy spreads

Despite state government’s cap of Rs 120 on movie tickets, theatre owners have been selling ‘Kabali’ tickets at five times higher than the original price HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

Record release planned in Kerala

M

ake hay while Rajinikanth shines! This seems to be the mantra for theatre owners who are making a killing by selling “Kabali” tickets at exorbitant prices much to the disappointment of hardcore superstar fans. With “Kabali” slated to release in over 4,000 screens worldwide on July 22, the demand for its tickets is unprecedented. “Most theatres across the state (Tamil Nadu) have sold out tickets for the opening weekend. With the average ticket costing Rs 600, most ardent Rajinikanth fans are disappointed that they couldn’t afford the tickets on the first day,” trade analyst Trinath told IANS. Despite Tamil Nadu government’s cap of Rs 120 on movie tickets, theatre owners have been selling “Kabali” tickets at five times higher than the original price. “We are used to paying Rs 120 for

movie tickets. But this sudden exponential increase in ticket price is very unfair. The prices vary according to the show timings. Early morning shows are sold at Rs 500-600 and the prices are slashed through the course of the day,” rues Santhosh Kumar, a second year college student. Some fans are seething over

unavailability of tickets because they were allegedly sold in bulk to corporates. “We don’t have issues with the ticket prices. It’s once in two or three years, you get a Thalaivar (Rajinikanth’s) film. If you can’t shell out Rs 1,000 for your matinee idol, then what kind of a fan are you,” asks Muralikrishna, a chartered

CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanthstarrer Tamil action drama “Kabali” will release on 306 screens in Kerala. According to a trade analyst, it’s the biggest release for a Tamil film in the state, fondly known as God’s Own Country. “It’s the biggest release for a Tamil film. ‘Kabali’ is releasing on 306 screens in Kerala,” trade analyst Trinath told IANS. Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is releasing the film in Kerala. “On par with Tamil Nadu, there’s unprecedented demand for tickets in Kerala. The opening weekend tickets are sold out,” he said. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film also stars Radhika Apte, Kishore, Dinesh, Kalaiarasan, Dhansikaa, Ritwika and Winston Chao. Rajinikanth plays a don who fights for Tamils in Malaysia in the film.

accountant. Although most theatres give preference to fan club members, this year they seem to have favoured companies. “Across major multiplexes, tickets on the first day were booked by corporates. Some of these companies booked in bulk even before the online booking started. I somehow managed to get a ticket through a friend. “But when I tried to book five tickets for my family just minutes after online bookings opened, it didn’t even go through,” said Muralikrishna. A theatre owner, on condition of anonymity, said the tickets were being sold at such high prices because of the high investment involved. “The Chengalpet area rights of ‘Kabali’ were bought for a whopping Rs 18 crore. In order to make profits, the film should collect over Rs 30 crore. If the tickets are sold at Rs 120, it’s impossible to recover the investment in the first few days,” he said.

Learn more about life on Cinema is always telling big-ticket films: Jagapathi lies: Priyadarshan IANS, CHENNAI

A

ctor Jagapathi Babu, who is currently shooting with Tamil superstar Vijay in a yet-untitled upcoming Tamil drama, believes the experience of working on big-ticket films teaches him more about life. “When I work on these big projects, I get to meet great human beings. This is where I’m learning

more than anywhere else. By working with a big star, I learn how to behave and stay grounded. Experiences such as these make me a better human being,” Jagapathi said. Busy with over half a dozen projects across southern indistries, Jagapathi plays the antagonist in the Vijay-starrer. Directed by Bharathan, the film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Aparna Vinod and Daniel Balaji.

‘Want next film to be more special’ IANS, CHENNAI

A

ctress Samantha Ruth Prabhu says the reason she hasn’t signed any project since the beginning of the year is that she wants her next film to be even more special than her recent outings “Theri”, “24” and “A...Aa”. Samantha, during a chat with her fans on Twitter, was asked why she hasn’t signed any new film. She responded: “Because I want my next movie to be even more special than ‘Theri’ than ‘24’ than ‘A...Aa’. And that’s very, very difficult.” Having already had four releases

this year, including “Theri”, “24”, “Brahmotsavam” and “A...Aa”,

Samantha now awaits the release of Telugu actioner “Janatha Garage”.

cclaimed filmmaker Priyadarshan attributes his success to how he “told lies well”. He says becoming a successful director depends on how good a cheater one is. “Cinema is always telling lies and how you convince people. I will attribute my success because I told lies quite well and was able to convince the audience,” the 59year-old film director told IANS. Priyadarshan, who hails from here, but is settled in Chennai was in the capital city to finish the dubbing of his upcoming Mohanlal starrer “Oppam”. The 91-film-old director said that this is the first time in his career he is making a crime thriller. The movie will see Mohanlal in the role of a blind man who is a witness in a murder and if he does not prove his innocence, he would become the accused. “The thread of the story came from a youngster and when I felt that I am yet to do a crime thriller, I decided to put pen to paper and wrote the story, screenplay and directed the film. The film is slated for release during the Onam festival season in September,” said the

National Award winner. He said that it is after a while that he has been able to do a film without any personal problems. He also said his personal problems led to his previous film not performing as was expected. “When there is disharmony in the family, it affects the creativity. Now I feel I have peace at heart and wish my new attempt in canning a crime thriller will do well,” Priyadarshan said, without elaborating on the problems he was facing. In 2014, Priyadarshan and his wife Lissy decided to end their marriage.

special report south cinema/special report

Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ opens to packed houses There is no monster manoeuvre to grab attention in the Rajnikanth-starrer which is his most thoughtful and sensible work in a long time SUBHASH K. JHA, MUMBAI

T

he Rajinikanth-starrer “Kabali” opened to packed houses in India on July 22 with millions of the actor’s fans making beelines outside cinema halls to watch the long-awaited film. The gangster drama released in nearly 5,000 screens worldwide. In the US, distribution company CineGalaxy, which had released “Theri” and “24” earlier this year, will release “Kabali” in 400 screens. The tickets for “Kabali” were sold well before the release of the film, which kept millions of the Rajni-devotees awake to watch it as early as 5 a.m., when the screens came alive in states like Kerala, where it released across 306 screens. When the film was over, many felt it was worth it to keep awake. The earliest show in Chennai started around 4 a.m. For the first show in the city, hardcore superstar fans assembled outside cinema halls even before midnight to celebrate the release of the film. In other parts of Tamil Nadu such as Madurai, the first show of “Kabali” started around 3 a.m. In the opening weekend in the city, the film reportedly will have over 300 shows across theaters. Although the Tamil movie super star is not known to have endorsed any product or service but the fren-

zy of brands and corporates associating with “Kabali” seems to throw up a new concept in brand promotion, said a brand consultant. “It is a clever way of riding on the excitement of a big movie starring a very big hero who has not endorsed any product or service,” Brand Comm, a brand consulting company, told IANS over phone from Bengaluru. AirAsia, the official airline partner for “Kabali” announced ‘Fly like a Superstar’ promotion, while telecom company Bharti Airtel launched “Kabali” exclusive products and services. These include special “Kabali” recharge packs with unlimited 2G internet, “Kabali” Hello Tunes and new “Kabali” branded SIM packs. From “Kabali” mobile cases to

coffee mugs and posters, Coveritup — a company that churns out high quality mobile phone cases — has partnered with the makers of the movie for exclusive merchandise roll-out. Rajikanth’s presence in “Kabali” is like the Second Coming. He is

no less than God for his fans. And since his last two films under-performed the Rajni-devotees are determined to see this one swish past all skeptical readings of a career that scoffs at all attempts a rational understanding. So does he, or doesn’t he in “Kabali”? That’s the question. The answer is clearly blowing in the wind as the megastar, the Thalaiva huffs and puffs and mows down all opposition to

his overpowering altruism. He is larger-than-life-and his introductory sequence is a thesis on screenheroism-and yet determined to be in-sync with a more real persona than he routinely plays. Unsure of how Rajni’s fans would react to a completely made-over mega-star, director Pa Ranjith finds a middle ground of narration. “Kabali” is sometimes gritty, often times giddy. The narration is simultaneously realistic and over-the-top. There is no monster manoeuvre to grab attention in “Kabali”, which is Rajnikanth’s most thoughtful and sensible work in a long time. For those who came away from his last two films feeling cheated and betrayed “Kabali” is ample compensation, and then some more. But be warned. The over-gimmicky stylized Rajinikanth is now a thing of the past. The Thalaiva has matured. And so should his fans. AirAsia, the official airline partner for “Kabali”, has announced ‘Fly like a Superstar’ promotional offer.

Hope ‘M Cream’ opens debate on marijuana law: Director The film by Agneya Singh traces the road journey by a group of rebellious friends to the mountains in Himachal Pradesh in pursuit of marijuana

marijuana is a crucial component of the film, the film is actually a story revolving around another drug named M Cream, a mythical magical variant of the drug hashish.

The film traces this road journey by a group of rebellious friends, to the mountains in Himachal Pradesh in pursuit of this drug. Agneya added: “Of course the film is not just about marijuana or drugs, but I do hope that it’s able to open a debate within the society because I think there is a generational shift, I think a lot of young people want the drug to be legalized due to its benefits and the fact that it’s not the same thing as cocaine or heroin.” “That’s something that the older generation, the government and the health authorities need to know about,” the director said. Another recent release ‘Udta Punjab’ had drugs as an important component. ‘M Cream’, which has won numerous awards in international festivals, is produced by Vindhya Singh under the banner Agniputra Films.

irector Agneya Singh of upcoming film ‘M Cream’ hopes that the movie, which has marijuana as an important element, opens the debate regarding legalization of marijuana in India. “Marijuana is not even a drug, it’s a herb. It has been used in Indian culture for hundreds of years. In fact, India had opposed the US-led UN convention to ban marijuana in the 50s,” Singh said. “US has decriminalized marijuana, so many countries in Europe are allowing people to smoke it, there is so much medical proof and evidence about the therapeutic benefits of marijuana and cannabis,” the director said in an interview. “So I think it is very hypocritical that here in India, where we have actually the

The movie, to be directed by Subhash Kapoor, is produced by Fox Star Studios. Asked why he is not doing the “Jolly LLB” sequel, Arshad told IANS: “I am not doing it... Akshay is doing it. Naseeruddin Shah impressed with son MUMBAI: Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah is impressed with his son Imaad’s performance in the film “M Cream”, which is all set to hit the screens on July 22. “It’s a very interesting, different and youth-oriented movie. I feel that it will catch the pulse of the youngsters, who show interest in these kinds of elements. There is a good proportion of such people. The music is very good and the performances are very good,” Naseeruddin Shah told IANS. Imaad, who has been seen in films such as “Dil Dosti Etc”, “Little Zizou” “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”, “404” among others, plays the role of a Delhi boy in “M Cream”. Naseeruddin says that he liked his son’s performance in the film. “I would obviously like it, he is my son. Let’s see what the public will say as that’s what matters. My blessings are with the film,” he said.

‘Great Grand Masti’: Nothing great or grand

S

top right here. Veteran filmmaker Indra Kumar who never grew up — at least, his cinema didn’t — has the golden solution to the epidemic problem of rape in this country... masturbation. In a sequence that must have ranked as a highlight while scripting, a man stops a car in the middle of nowhere, orders the heroes to pleasure themselves at gunpoint... Not just once, but thrice. Exhausted and satiated, our three protagonists protest at the very thought of any more self-service. Satisfied the man with the gun shouts for his daughter: “You can get in the car with them now. They will drive you to the next village without harming you.” Women, we can assume, are safe

looks stricken and swallows hard. Maybe he is thinking of what his children would think when they are old enough to watch the “Masti” series. Can children disown their fathers?). “Great Grand Masti” has strangely been certified by the censor board for ‘Adults Only’. community news Gujarati Samaj’s dance competition in Chicago 2

FRIDAY, 22 JULY, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- The Federation of Gujarati Associations of North America (FOGANA) held the 36th Midwest Regional Cultural event of Raas, Garba, and Folk dance competition on July 9 at Copernicus Center (Gateway Theater) located at 5216 W Lawrence Ave in Chicago. The event was hosted by Gujarati Samaj Chicago and featured performances by over 266 participants. The program was attended by over 1000 people, including chief guest Chhota Patel and Guests of Honor Dr. Bharat Barai and Dr. Umang Patel. FOGANA was founded in 1980 with the goal of bringing all Gujarati people living in North America closer by promoting a common platform to sustain and perpetuate the cultural heritage of Gujarat, India. The primary activity of FOGANA has been focused on preserving and enhancing Gujarati Raas-Garba-Folk Dances while engaging the younger generation in efforts to preserving and spreading their heritage. Nirisha Shah, joint cultural secretary of Gujarati Samaj Chicago, welcomed the sponsors, judges, choreographers, managers, participants and volunteers. She said this was a day of great anticipation and wonderful dreams, and a day to celebrate Gujarat’s rich heritage and culture. She also reviewed the basic rules and guidelines for the attendees to ensure the event went smoothly and efficiently. She further remarked that the goal was to make the program a successful experience that will stay in memory forever. FOGANA Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the third time was Bharti Desai who has previously won awards in the FOGANA competition. As MC, she kept the crowd both engaged and excited throughout almost seven hours of the nonstop entertainment. The event began with the traditional Mangal Deep lighting ceremony by Chhota Patel, Dr. Bharat Barai, and Suryakant Patel, each with their respective families. A prayer dance by Nrutya Kalashree Dance Academy followed with the song title Mangalastakam, choreographed by Guru Toral Chaudhari. Toral Chaudhari was also one of the performers of the prayer dance. The second prayer dance was performed by Mudra Dance Academy with the song title Shree Ganeshay Dheemahi, choreographed by Guru Kshama Shah. Suryakant Patel, GSC president, gave a brief history and highlights of Gujarati Samaj Chicago, founded in 1976 by Jayantilal Mashar. This marked the sixth time Gujarati Samaj Chicago had the honor of hosting this event. He thanked all the past presidents, Board of Trustees, volunteers, generous donors and current and past sponsors. A message from Midwest Regional FOGANA chairman Mukesh Shah spoke about adoption of the FOGANA constitution 36 years ago. Ratha Yatra celebrated in Jagannatha Temple

BY A STAFF WRITER URORA, IL -- Hundreds of devotees celebrated Ratha Yatra of Lord Jagannatha at Shree Jagannatha Temple of Greater Chicago, Aurora, IL on July 9. As people from many Indian communities gathered at the temple, all rituals were completed in the temple and four deities--Lord Sudarshan, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannatha--were carried by devotees to a beautifully-decorated chariot in a colorful procession known as ‘Dhadi Pahandi’. All the deities were installed on the chariot, Chera Pahanra was performed by Pradip Nayak and devotees offered coconuts, fruits to the deities on the chariot. It is believed that by seeing Lord Jagannath on the chariot, one gets rid of the cycle of rebirth. After all rituals were performed, ecstatic devotees pulled the chariot which rolled on the road with the devotees singing, dancing, and playing traditional instruments such as Ghanta, Gini, Mridanga etc. As per tradition, the Ratha Yatra festival is about Lord Jagannath along with brother and sister going on a sojourn to his aunt’s house and return after 10 days. He comes out of his main temple to meet and bless all his devotees, irrespective of color, cast, and creed. The whole festival has great cultural significance of love and respect to elders, protection to women in the family and society, unity in diversity, and social equality. Shree Jagannath culture based on ‘Sanatan Dharma’ is being followed since time immemorial at Srikhetra, Puri Dham in Odisha, India. Sri Jagannath Society of Greater Chicago is a non-profit religious and philanthropic organization. It is working hard to practice and promote this precious culture in greater Chicago area for the last 10 years. This was the 11th Ratha Yatra celebration, said Mr. Neel Nanda, one of the board members. The society is open to all having interest in Lord Jagannath and its culture to join and support the noble cause. SJSGC performs various types of philanthropic activities in areas like natural calamity, food drive, back to school drive and orphanage also celebrate variety of events including daily Sunday puja. Throughout the oriya calendar all festivals are celebrated in its own unique way. Jagannath-Dharma is a compendium of, probably, all existing and possible facets of spirituality. Its autonomous richness combines and absorbs within its fold across cultures. More information is available at www.srijagannathchicago.org.

But such effects were not apparent in those in the exercise-only group of women, the researchers said. “Our study shows that weight loss is a safe and effective method of improving the angiogenic profile in healthy individuals,” said Catherine Duggan of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Women who controlled their diet lost 8.5 percent of body weight. While women who indulged in exercise lost 2.4 percent of body weight, those who controlled diet as well as did exercise lost 10.8 per cent. On the other hand, women who did not

new study has found that patients in the emergency department have significantly higher rates of smoking than the general population. A study undertaken using a sample of almost 340 emergency department patients in Melbourne’s St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Austin Hospital, reported a smoking prevalence among the adult

emergency department patients to be 23.3 per cent, compared to the general Australian population of roughly 15 per cent.

Internationally, the prevalence of smoking among emergency department patients is reported to vary between 21 and 41 percent. The Melbourne data revealed that 78 of the emergency department participants reported being current smokers. The average age of those smokers was 42.1 years and 64 percent were males. At least 41 percent reported difficulty refraining from smoking, while 69.7 percent had a desire to quit.

In the study, published in the journal American Association for Cancer Research, the team analysed 439 obese, healthy, sedentary postmenopausal women aged 50 to 75.

wedding photography seminar and workshop festival here — titled Silk Inspire 2016 — will offer an insight into wedding photography in India from Oct 4-7. Silk Inspire invites all emerging wedding photographers, and seasoned professionals to learn, interact and network. It will bring together eight of the world’s best wedding photographers as photography instructors for the festival. The festival is organised by Silk photos, a boutique photo-agency which represents a select group of wedding photographers, both stills and motion, specialising in Indian weddings and destination wedding photography. “These kinds of events are commonly organised in Europe and the US. I am proud to initiate this wave of change in the wedding photography industry. More

importantly, in a career of 30 years, it is time to do something new and inspiring,” Sephi Bergerson, owner Silk photos, said in a statement. The first two days will include a

NEW DELHI: Proper grooming and hygiene is just as important for men as it is for women. Lack of grooming can hinder your chance of making a perfect impression. Samarpita Dasgupta, Fashion Director, Roposo, a fashion social network, has shared important and basic grooming tips for men. Cleansing: Instead of trying a basic soap that rips the moisture off your skin, you can opt for something that nourishes your skin without rendering it dry and lifeless. Hair care: An oil massage followed by shampoo and a gentle conditioner is possibly the basic care that your hair needs. Do not forget hair gels are a thing of the past and to get that healthy shine, use a serum . Beard: The key to keeping beards itch-free and healthy is to keep it clean and hydrated by using a shampoo and beard balm depending on the length. Medium to long length beards ought to be waxed regularly.

R by a quick brush and dry. Take a centre parting and divide a section from ear to ear at the crown. Start by gently making curls using a hair tong. Set it with a hair mist and finger comb the hair to soften the look and create waves. Sonakshi Sinha’s Dutch braids: Start by applying a smoothening balm or cream and blow dry the hair until smooth. Next, take a centre parting. On each side, start plaiting a reverse French braid or a Dutch braid and continue into a 3 strand or 4 strand braid and secure with a rubber band at the end. Use a hair wax or matte paste while creating the braid.

elationship status can affect who and what we find attractive. A new study has found that if we are in a relationship, we are more likely to be attracted to faces resembling our own, but for single people opposites attract. “For the first time, we have observed how our partnership status affects who we find attractive,” Jitka Lindova from Charles University in the Czech Republic. The team showed a series of photographs of faces to university students and asked them to rate their attractiveness. The photographs were digitally manipulated so that the resemblance to the student was modified. Images were of an individual of the opposite sex, whose face had been manipulated to look either more or less similar to the student. They were also presented with images of a same-sex individual manipulated in the same way. “We found that single partici-

pants, those not in relationships, rate dissimilar faces as more attractive and sexy than self-resembling faces,” Lindova said. This was observed when participants rated both same-sex and opposite-sex faces. “Our interpretation is that attractiveness perception mechanisms that give us a preference for a genetically suitable partner may be suppressed during romantic

relationships,” she explained. The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology. “This might be a relationship maintenance strategy to prevent us from finding alternatives to our own partner, or perhaps self-resemblance becomes more important in terms of the social support we expect receive from relatives, which are known as kinship cues,” Lindova explained.
