Trump’s troubled charity foundation to shut down The move was announced by the AG of New York State who will supervise the distribution of its remaining monies IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s troubled charity foundation has agreed to close down amid allegations that he and others illegally misused its funds. The move was announced by the Attorney General of New York State, Barbara Underwood, who will supervise the distribution of its remaining monies, the BBC reported this week. She has accused Trump and his three eldest children of using it for private and political gain.

BRIEFS US Senate passes short-term budget bill WASHINGTON: The US Senate has approved a short-term spending bill to avoid a partial government shutdown during the holidays, but it does not include funds demanded by US President Donald Trump to build the wall along the Mexico border. The bill, pushed by the Republicans and supported by the Democrats, includes funds to finance the administration for seven weeks from Friday midnight — when the current ones expire — till February 8. The House of Representatives is expected to approve the bill on Thursday so that Trump can sign it, Efe news reported.

Man jailed for threat to kill Donald Trump WASHINGTON: A 39-year-old man living in the US state of Arizona has been sentenced to 37 months in prison for threatening to kill President Donald Trump, officials said. According to a press release on Tuesday by the Office of the US Attorney, District of Arizona, Jerrod Hunter Schmidt was sentenced after he was found guilty in September by a jury of two counts of threatening the President and two counts of making interstate threatening communications. Schmidt made a series of calls to the court clerk’s office from April 10 to April 11 after learning that his conviction for a prior felony was affirmed by the Nebraska Court of Appeals. —IANS

The case against them would continue, she said. Underwood said in a statement that there had been “a shocking pattern of illegality involving the Trump Foundation — including unlawful co-ordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and wilful self-dealing, and much more”. She continued: “This amounted to the Trump Foundation functioning as little more than a chequebook to serve Trump’s business and political interests.” Under the terms of the deal to shut down the foundation, Under-

wood said, it could only be dissolved under judicial supervision and could only distribute its assets “to reputable organisations approved by my office”. She added: “This is an important victory for the rule of law, making clear that there is one set of rules for everyone. “We’ll continue to move our suit forward to ensure that the Trump Foundation and its directors are held to account for their clear and repeated violations of state and federal law.” Trump and his eldest children have yet to comment.

O

utgoing US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has come under heavy criticism from Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN Riyad Mansour for her hostility towards the Palestinian people. Haley, who is stepping down December end, gave her last statement on the Israel-Palestinian issue asking both sides to negotiate more at this week’s Security Council meeting. In her speech, Haley asked Israelis and Palestinians to engage in a new Middle East peace plan yet to be unveiled by the Donald Trump administration. Palestinians to focus on parts they like and encourage negotiations to move forward. “Both sides would benefit greatly from a peace agreement, but the Palestinians would benefit more,

and the Israelis would risk more,” said Haley. Following which, Mansour told reporters: “Ambassador Haley, unfortunately, exhibited an excessive amount of hostility to the Palestinian people and to the Pales-

tinian cause.” “Different representatives of the US were always showing massive support to Israel. But yet in the same time, there was a bit more balance in terms of not ignoring the Palestinian side completely,” said Mansour, who has seen many US ambassadors to the UN since he served the post in 2005. Haley was more aggressive, more pro-Israeli than previous US ambassadors, Xinhua quoted Mansour as saying. She would be replaced by Heather Nauert, the current US State Department spokesperson.

1984 riots: Sajjan Kumar jailed for life The court convicted him and five others saying the ‘criminals’ had escaped punishment for decades IANS, NEW DELHI

T

hirty-four years after the gruesome killings, the Delhi High Court on Monday convicted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in an antiSikh riot case of 1984 here and sentenced him to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life, holding that the violence was a “crime against humanity” engineered by politicians with assistance from police. Setting aside the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar, the court convicted him and five others saying that the “criminals” had escaped prosecution and punishment for over two decades. “This court is of the view that the mass killings of Sikhs in Delhi

BRIEFS Soldier, 3 militants, 7 civilians killed in Valley SRINAGAR: It was a bloodsoaked Saturday in Kashmir in which 11 persons, including seven civilians, an Army soldier and three militants, were killed and over three dozen civilian protesters sustained injuries in clashes with the security forces. The 11 deaths took place in a gunfight and subsequent clashes in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, in one of the bloodiest days in the Valley’s recent history. The gunfight erupted in Sirnoo village as security personnel surrounded the area after receiving a tip-off that militants were holed up there.

Chaos over Rafale deal continues NEW DELHI: Proceedings in both Houses of Parliament were disrupted for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday over various issues, including the Rafale fighter jets deal. Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan tried to transact the business for the day but was repeatedly interrupted due to the sloganeering. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots were ‘crime against humanity’ engineered by politicians, said the court Sajjan Kumar, 73, was asked to surrender by December 31 and directed not to leave Delhi. “In the summer of 1947, during partition, this country witnessed

horrific mass crimes where several lakhs of civilians, including Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus, were massacred,” the bench said. “Thirty-seven years later, the country was again witness to another enormous human tragedy. Following the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister, on October 31, 1984, by two of her Sikh bodyguards, a communal frenzy was unleashed. “For four days between November 1 to November 4, all over Delhi, 2,733 Sikhs were brutally murdered. Their houses were destroyed. In the rest of the country too, thousands of Sikhs were killed,” the bench observed in its 203-page order. The court said: “A majority of the perpetrators of these horrific mass

intent to destroy house and injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class. The CBI had filed an appeal challenging the acquittal of Sajjan Kumar and said that the trial court “erred in acquitting Sajjan Kumar as it was he who had instigated the mob during the riots”.

amid Nehal Ansari, the man from Mumbai who was freed by Pakistan on Tuesday after keeping him in jail for six years on alleged espionage charges, called on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj here on Wednesday and thanked her for her role in securing his release. A video shared by External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar in Twitter showed Ansari being accompanied by his mother Fauzia during the meeting. While Ansari thanked Sushma Swaraj, she in turn told him that he had faced a difficult time. Sushma Swaraj then turned to a sobbing Fauzia who hugged her and

said: “Mera Bharat mahaan, meri madam mahaan, sab madam ne hi kiya hai (My India is great, madam is great, madam did everything).”

Pakistan had alleged that Ansari, an engineer, was an “Indian spy” who illegally entered the country. Islamabad accused him of involve-

ment in anti-state crimes, forging documents, and jailed him. For the family, it was an ordeal since November 2012 when he left the country for Kabul for employment and then was reported “missing”. He reportedly became friendly with a Pakistan girl on social media and reached Kohat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to save her from a forced marriage. On November 12, 2012, Ansari crossed over from Afghanistan border in Jalalabad to Peshawar in Pakistan where he was nabbed by Pakistani intelligence. Later, a military court sentenced him to three years in jail, a term that he completed on December 15. Ansari returned to India through the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab.

Is grand alliance in UP on shaky ground? After Congress' comeback in Hindi heartland, SP and BSP rethink prospective grand alliance with the party MOHIT DUBEY, LUCKNOW

A

fter successful electoral outings in three states, even as the Congress is on the upswing as it braces to take down the Narenda Modi government at the centre in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the two other key players — the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) — are busy rethinking their prospective grand alliance with the Grand Old Party, at least in UP. In May, flash bulbs popped with maddening frenzy as opposition leaders converged at Bengaluru at H.D. Kumarswamy’s swearing-in as the Karnataka Chief Minister. However, the buzz was missing at the oath-taking cerremonies in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh earlier this week as both the regional satraps from Uttar Pradesh - Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati skipped the events. This, despite the fact that both BSP and SP extended their support in government formation in MP. What is both interesting and intriguing is that the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) also skipped the cere-

monies despite Ajit Singh’s sole legislator helping the Congress get a majority in Rajasthan. While many reasons are being floated for their absence, from sprain in the leg to delayed flights, insiders here say there is more than meets the eye in the absence. Sources in the opposition camp say that with a “common minority vote bank at stake”, the SP and BSP both are “uncomfortable with the prospect of coming together

gress in Muslim-majority parliamentary constituencies as they feel it is a better option in national elections. A reliable source said that ‘Behen ji’ (Mayawati) had offered 40 seats to SP and would contest an equal number of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats. The Dalit powerhouse had made it clear to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav that if he thought Congress should be on board, he would have to cede seats from his quota to both

What is both interesting and intriguing is that the Rashtriya Lok Dal skipped the ceremonies despite Ajit Singh’s sole legislator helping the Congress get a majority in Rajasthan with the Congress, which might eat into the Muslim votes”. A senior BSP leader told IANS that while the rivalry with the SP was a “thing of the past” and that both parties had “almost arrived at a seat-sharing formula for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the chances of Congress being on board were almost negligible. The problem, he pointed, out was the possibility of UP’s Muslims changing track to the erstwhile weak and lost Con-

the Congress and the RLD. With the Congress now making a string comeback in the Hindi heartland, the SP-BSP leaders are jittery about a vote transfer of Muslims to the Grand Old Party, a development that could cost them dearly in the general elections. The BJP had won 73 seats along with its ally Apna Dal in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. With the support of the backward classes and the Jats, it had swept western UP. A

From left, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, BSP chief Mayawati, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. (File Photo: IANS)

Similar voting trend was seen in the 2017 state assembly polls. A senior leader pointed out that RLD, which fought the election with Congress in Rajasthan and even won a seat from Bharatpur, is leaning towards the BSP-SP combine, which it feels, could not only prevent a split votes in western UP, its pocket borough, but will also get its vote bank transferred to it where the RLD contests.

While Congress leaders in the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) were initially clamouring for a space in the proposed ‘Maha Gathbandhan’ in the state, it now appears to be on a trip of its own. The recent wins in the state assembly elections has pumped in enough adrenalin in the Congress camp for its leaders to say it was “not dying to be in the grand alliance”.

Why did Saraswati disappear? Mythical river raises questions Take away burden of shame and silence from victims and help Saraswati flow free and wild again urges upon seeing a beautiful girl, let them wear blindfolds. PARO ANAND, NEW DELHI

I

don’t often write about mythology. It’s today’s stories that engage me. Yet I found myself suddenly drawn to an ancient story. What drew me in was how relevant the questions it raises are today. Especially today. One of the stories around why the River Saraswati is subterranean goes like this: Brahma gave birth to Saraswati from his forehead. As she leapt out, he was so taken up by her beauty that he “fell in love” and started to pursue her. Horrified at the advances of her father, Saraswati fled and disappeared underground. She may or may not have made a brief appearance, there are different versions of that story. But all versions agree she had to disappear once again. Never to surface again. So, what’s the connection of a mythical river with what’s happening today? For me, it is the fact that Brahma continues to be wor-

shipped as a god (yes, let’s put that in a small ‘g’ and not dignify it with a reverent capital letter). And she, poor thing, spent her life fleeing the lustful gaze or worse of her own father. And, gradually, had to hide herself away altogether and almost cease to exist. So much so, that people began to wonder if she ever was. The question that is so relevant is why does the burden of “shame”

rest upon the victim, especially one who has suffered sexual advances? Why does the perpetrator of sexual excesses continue to be whatever he was ordained to be, attain whatever his life’s goals were and the victim becomes defined by the crime she suffered till she is forced to protect herself by negating whatever she was or wanted to be? If men cannot control their

What’s the connection of a mythical river with what’s happening today? It is the fact that Brahma continues to be worshipped as God not help but think that our morality is upside down and inside out. Some time ago, I had written an article on the need for stories about sexual assault and rape for young readers, for that is the group of people who I work with and for. I had an overwhelming response from total strangers and dear friends urging me to write it

and wishing they had such a story when they were being sexually victimized. Many confessed for the very first time that this had happened to them — they had no platform to talk. Others had actually told an adult, sometimes a mother, about the assault and they had been told to be quiet about it and make sure that they were never alone with the man again. Again, the burden of protection and shame became the victim’s to carry. The criminal, because surely that is what he is, went scot free much of the time. And yes, I don’t believe in trial by social media either. The converse situation is also true. Men who are being named in the #MeToo storm should also get equal recourse to tell their stories. I don’t agree with giving one half voice by taking away the others’ voice. But let’s take away the burden of shame and silence from victims and help Saraswati flow free and wild again.

Trump has long voiced his desire to bring the US troops back home when possible, while senior administration officials including Defense Secretary James Mattis have advocated for a longer-term military deployment in Syria to secure a victory against the IS. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s claim about victory against the IS has been questioned. “I strongly disagree. ri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, sacked from the post in October, was sworn in again on Sunday by President Maithripala Sirisena, a move that ended a nearly two-month political impasse that erupted after his surprising dismissal. Wickremesinghe, who is also the leader of the ruling United National Party (UNP), took his oath of office at the Presidential Secretariat here as hundreds of his supporters massed outside, reports Xinhua news agency. A new cabinet under Sirisena and Wickremesinghe is expected to be sworn in on Monday. UNP lawmakers told the media

Ranil Wickremesinghe

that Wickremesinghe’s appointment “had restored democracy in the country and the new government would now work towards strengthening the economy and unveiling new proposals”. Sunday’s move comes after

Mahinda Rajapakse resigned on Saturday as Prime Minister, seven weeks after he was appointed by Sirisena following Wickremesinghe’s dismissal on October 26. A new caretaker government was also sworn in after the ouster. On Wednesday, Parliament passed a vote of confidence in Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister. The Supreme Court ruled the next day that Sirisena had acted illegally in November by dissolving Parliament and calling snap polls nearly two years ahead of the next elections. The UNP said Wickremesinghe’s dismissal by Sirisena had been unconstitutional as he held a majority at Parliament.

China will never seek global hegemony, says Xi Jinping IANS, BEIJING

hinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday vowed that his country will not develop at the expense of other nations, in a speech marking 40 years since China introduced major economic reforms. However, he also said that the global superpower would not be told what to do by anyone, the BBC reported. Late leader Deng Xiaoping’s campaign of “reform and opening up” began four decades ago. The resulting growth has made China the second-largest economy in the world. Hundreds of millions of people

have been lifted out of poverty but in recent years, China has struggled with mounting debt and slowing economic growth.

Xi said despite his country’s economic achievements, China would “never seek global hegemony” and also highlighted its contributions

towards a “shared future for mankind”. He did not mention the current trade dispute with the US. China continues to crack down on political dissent and is accused of locking up hundreds of thousands of Muslims without trial in the western region of Xinjiang. Its militarization of islands in the South China Sea — home to vital shipping lanes — has sparked concerns among Asian neighbors that it seeks to dominate the region. Critics also say that while China is helping to build much-needed infrastructure across Asia and Africa, it is saddling countries with billions in debt in a bid to gain strategic influence.

US man has been sentenced to 15 months in prison for a brutal attack on a Sikh American taxi driver in Seattle city last year. Swarn Singh, 53, was assaulted with a hammer by Rory Benson on December 16, 2017. The accused pleaded guilty to the attack and was given the sentence by a court in Seattle late last week, the community’s civil rights group — Sikh Coalition — tweeted.

During the incident, Singh who maintains Sikh articles of faith including unshorn hair and a turban, had parked outside an apartment building to drop Benson and his mother, the group said in a statement. It was then that Benson, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, brutally attacked Singh. He grabbed a piece of cloth and attempted to suffocate the victim with it. Singh managed to get out of the taxi but Benson grabbed a hammer from his bag and chased the victim

“I’m excited to now be part of the journey of bringing Workplace to companies across the globe and help them unlock the potential of their biggest asset — people,” Anand wrote on his LinkedIn profile. Facebook launched Workplace in 2016 to help make companies more connected and productive. Currently, more than 30,000 organizations are using Workplace worldwide — including Walmart, Heineken, Spotify, Lyft and the Reliance Group. “A company’s culture is leading indicator of its success and the productivity of its work force. Workplace brings the power of shaping culture by connecting people at work in ways never imagined before,” Anand wrote.

Indian gets 9 years jail for sex assault on US flight IANS, WASHINGTON

A

34-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for sexually assaulting a sleeping woman on a US flight early this year. Prabhu Ramamoorthy, living in the US on a temporary work visa, was accused of abusing a 22-yearold woman seated by the window next to him while his wife was on his other side on a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Detroit on January 3. He will be deported back to India after he serves his sentence, a federal court in Detroit said as it sentenced him to nine years of imprisonment, Detroit Free Press reported. He will never be allowed back into the US.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy. (Photo: Prabhu/Facebook)

Prosecutors said Ramamoorthy “committed one of the most brazen airplane sexual assaults ever prosecuted in this district” when

he knowingly took advantage of a sleeping, intoxicated woman who could not fight back. The prosecution had originally sought a 11-

year jail term but US District Judge Terrence Berg concluded that nine years was sufficient for what he described as “an extremely serious offense”. Ramamoorthy was held without bail after appearing in the federal court after prosecutors argued there was a risk he could abscond. According to court records, the 22-year-old victim had told investigators that she was sleeping in the seat next to Ramamoorthy on the flight when she was jolted awake and found the fellow passenger shoving his fingers inside her pants and “vigorously moving them”. She said her shirt was also unbuttoned. Federal prosecutor Amanda Jawad said Ramamoorthy stopped after the victim opened her eyes

and then the shaken woman immediately alerted flight attendants. She was then given a different seat and the man was arrested after the plane landed. When the accusations against Ramamoorthy surfaced, he had denied them. He told the police he could not have committed the crime because he was asleep. His wife had claimed that the woman had been sleeping on her husband’s knees. Ramamoorthy later altered his story and told an FBI agent that he might have unclasped the sleeping woman’s bra “while playing with it”. The court filing stated that Ramamoorthy also admitted that he “unzipped the woman’s pants partway and put his finger inside”. He was convicted by a jury in August.

TRS TO FORM FRONT FOR 2019 Rao-led TRS is working to form a federal front for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that would not have either Congress or BJP in it IANS, NEW DELHI

T

elangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) MP and Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K. Kavitha said TRS is working to form a federal front for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that would not have either Congress or BJP in it. “A federal front is being floated. We believe that a neutral platform should be established which is free of both BJP and Congress. Our agenda is to address the people of this nation. There have been various political groupings in the country which failed while few succeeded,” she told reporters here. Kavitha said that regional parties will have a greater role to play in the national politics because they can address the aspirations of the people which national parties could not do. “We have done it in Telangana.

We want to replicate the same at national level and we will certainly work very hard to make sure to form an alliance which will not have either BJP or Congress,” she said. Kavitha referred to DMK leader

Karnataka Cong MLAs lobby for cabinet posts BELAGAVI (KARNATAKA): Ahead of the cabinet expansion of the coalition government in the state on December 22, several party legislators are lobbying for their inclusion with party’s leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, said an official. “Many legislators, including senior leaders have urged Siddaramaiah to recommend them to the party high command for the six cabinet posts vacant from the party’s quota in the 6-month-old JD(S)Congress government,” a party official told IANS here on Tuesday. As Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader, Siddaramaiah discussed the cabinet expansion and appointment of chairmen of boards and corporations with about 70 legislators on short-listing some of them for approval by party President Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on December 21. “Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara of the Congress will submit the list of names finalised at the CLP meeting to ensure regional balance and fair representation of them region and caste wise,” said the official from the state’s northwest city, about 500km northwest of Bengaluru. Among the senior legislators HK Patil, MB Patil, Ramalinga Reddy and Roshan Baig were left out of the cabinet, formed in June after two parties forged an alliance

M.K. Stalin proposing the name of Congress President Rahul Gandhi as prime ministerial candidate and said TRS is not part of that grouping and pointed out that the move had been “opposed” by some members of that grouping.

“This is not about one person becoming a Prime Minister or about one party rising to power, this is about truly addressing the issues of the people of this country,” Kavitha said. She said that in the so-called semi-final before the Lok Sabha elections next year, the Congress did not do well in Telangana and did not get a clear victory in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. “In Rajasthan, where they expected a landslide victory, they barely scraped through. Default politics is the current state of the country,” she said. The TDP MP said if there was a strong regional party in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, it would have played a major role. She hit out at the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), saying it has “miserably failed” on delivery of various promises made to people.

British tourist raped in Goa PANAJI: A 42-year-old British national was raped by unknown persons near the popular Palolem beach in south Goa, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred at 4.30 a.m. when the victim was walking from the Canacona railway station to her rented home near Palolem village, Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudessai told reporters here. “We have drawn up a list of suspects based on the description given to us. Investigations are on,” the official said. Officials from the Crime Branch are assisting the South Goa district police in the investigation. A First Information Report has been filed under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The victim has been an annual visitor to the coastal state for several years. he CBI this week examined Hyderabad-based businessman Sathish Babu Sana to verify and corroborate his statement on the basis of which the agency had filed a bribery case against its Special Director Rakesh Asthana in midst of his ugly spat with Director Alok Verma. A new Central Bureau of Investigation team constituted by interim Director M. Nageswara Rao asked Sana to clarify “discrepancies” in his complaint against Asthana, sources said. The team was formed immediately after the government sent Verma and Asthana on forced leave on October 23 in the wake of a feud between them. Rao had reconstituted the team and transferred the members of erstwhile team. The CBI questioned Sana to verify his October 4 and October 16 statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of Crimianl Procedure Code about his meetings with various middlemen in New Delhi as well as Dubai that led the agency to lodge an FIR. The statement recorded before the magistrate is considered a confessional statement and in case the complainant withdraws from it, the prosecuting agency can file a perjury case.

An accused in meat exporter Moin Qureshi case, Sana has sought relief from court from the repeated CBI summons issued against him. A CBI team probing a corruption case against Qureshi which was headed by Asthana claimed by Sana was issuing summons against him. Sana has alleged in a complaint to CBI, which is part of FIR, that investment banker Manoj Prasad had assured him of relief from CBI summons if he agreed to pay Rs 5crore bribe. The Hyderabad businessman has also alleged that he was assured

by Prasad that his brother Somesh manages investments of Asthana in London and he is in touch with two other senior officers of various agencies. Prasad was arrested by the CBI on October 16 when he was returning from Dubai to allegedly collect a part of the bribe. As per the CBI, it has detected five alleged payments to middlemen by Sana -- Rs 1 crore on December 10, 2017, Rs 1.95 crore on December 13, 2017, Rs 25 lakh on October 10, 2018 and two tranche of 25,000 Dirham and 3,000 Dirham on October 14.

Oz defeat India in second Test Australia crush India by 146 runs in the second Test to level the four-match series at 1-1 IANS, PERTH

ustralia defeated India by 146 runs in the second Test to level the fourmatch series at 1-1 here on Tuesday. India were dismissed for 140 runs in their second innings on the fifth and final day. Starting the final day at the overnight score of 112/5, the visitors seemed over-awed by the daunting challenge of getting 170odd runs in difficult conditions against the formidable Australian bowling. The Indians needed at least one big partnership but none of their batsmen could stick around for too long and were bundled out pretty quickly. Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc was the most successful among the Australian bowlers with three wickets each. Although the pitch did not have too much turn, Lyon did well to outfox the Indian batsmen with his variations and richly deserved his match haul of eight wickets. The visitors lost their first wicket of the day soon after the start when Hanuma Vihari was dismissed by Starc.

The Indian tail did not wag too much and the Australians cleaned up remaining wickets to clinch a well-deserved victory.

Pant was dismissed by Lyon a short while later when he went for a drive and the inside edge went to Peter Handscomb on the onside. The Indian tail did not wag too much and the Australians cleaned up the remaining wickets to clinch a well deserved victory. Meanwhile, India skipper Virat

Sindhu breaks jinx to win World Tour Finals title GUANGZHOU (CHINA): India’s P.V. Sindhu became the first Indian to win the season finale at the BWF World Tour Finals 2018 badminton tournament here. Sindhu defeated title favorite Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 21-19, 21-17 in the women’s singles final, reports Efe. The straight games win is special for the star Indian shuttler, who has won no title this year, although she made it to the finals of four tournaments, including the BWF World Championships and the Asian Games. She finished runner-up at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the 2017 World Championships and the 2017 World Superseries Finals. She had also lost to Okuhara in the epic World Championships final in Glasgow last year. However, on Sunday, Sindhu held her attack and dominated the game. Okuhara won the very first point of the match, but failed to secure a lead again in the match. “I got close to her in both games, but I wasn’t patient. She wasn’t as aggressive as she usually is, she played at a slower pace. I tried to

play the longer rallies in the second game, but I couldn’t recover from my first game loss,” Okuhara said after the game. “I’m really proud, the year has ended on a beautiful note. People have been asking me the same question, I think the question won’t come again - asking why I always lose in the final. Now I can say I won the gold and I’m proud of it. It was good that people were asking me about losing so many finals, because I had to ask myself why I was losing. Finally I got the answer,” Sindhu said after her win. —IANS

Kohli’s 25th Test ton in the second Test against Australia in Perth, helped him consolidate the No.1 Test batting spot in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings. Among other Indians, Kohli’s deputy Ajinkya Rahane gained three spots to No.15 while

stumper Rishabh Pant has jumped 11 spots to a career-high No.48. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who recently became the first Kiwi to make it to 900 points, remained on the second spot while banned Australian Steve Smith continued in the third. India’s Cheteshwar Pujara also held

on to his No.4 spot. Australia opener Usman Khawaja, whose gritty knock of 72 in the second innings helped Australia set India a target of 287, moved up one slot to No.12 while his skipper Tim Paine jumped from No.55 to No.46. In the bowling charts led by South African Kagiso Rabada, pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who bagged five wickets at Perth, yet again made a significant move, climbing five places to No.28. His teammates, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma too climbed up the ladder. Shami, who remained wicket-less in the first innings and returned with 6/56 in the second, moved up by two slots to No.21, while Ishant’s five wickets have helped him overtake England spinner Moeen Ali to take 26th place among bowlers.

Rookies turn overnight millionaires IANS, JAIPUR

T

he 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction on Tuesday witnessed a new list of millionaires with Varun Chakaravarthy and Jaydev Unadkat topping the charts among the Indian players with a hefty purse of Rs 8.4 crore each, while Englishman Sam Curran emerged as the highest paid overseas player with a price tag of Rs 7.2 crore. Varun, a little known mystery bowler, was purchased by the Kings XI Punjab while Unadkat, the left-arm quick, was snapped up by his former franchise -Rajasthan Royals, who had released him after a satisfactory stint last season. Among other Indian players to breach the five-crore club are Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals), Mohit Sharma (Chennai Super Kings) and Shivam Dubey (Royal Challengers Bangalore). Besides Curran, the other sought after overseas players were South African Colin Ingram, bought by the Delhi Capitals for a whopping Rs 6.4 crore, while West Indian power-hitter Carlos Brathwaite was snapped up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 5 crore.

But the major highlight of the day was the emergence of lesser known Indian players earning big in the auction. The trend was initially set by the Punjab franchise, who went for leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, before further bolstering their bowling attack with the addition of Curran, and India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami for Rs 4.8 crore. The Punjab side also bought 17year-old wicket-keeper Prabhsimran Singh for a whopping Rs 4.8 crore while splurging Rs 4.2 crore for West Indian Nicolas Pooran and Rs 1 crore for Australian all-

rounder Moises Henriques. RCB also invested in many lesser known young faces like the uncapped Shivam, West Indian Shimron Hetmyer (Rs 4.2 crore), Akshsdeep Nath (Rs 3.6 crore) and Prayas Raj Barman (Rs 1.5 crore). Delhi Capitals, formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils, also strengthened their middle-order batting by investing a lion’s share on Ingram besides spending Rs 2 crore each to bag the services of allrounder Hanuma Vihari and Sherane Rutherford. It also got veteran India pacer and local boy Ishant Sharma for Rs 1.10 crore.

Data breach hits NASA, says report SAN FRANCISCO: Personal information of some of current and former employees at NASA may have been stolen in a data breach that hit the US space agency in October this year, a media report said. In an internal memo sent to employees this week and published by US-based space news portal SpaceRef.com, NASA admitted to getting hacked almost two months after the breach was discovered. The people behind the hacking have not yet been identified as NASA said that an unknown intruder got access to one of the agency’s servers holding the personal data of the employees. The scope of the breach and the number of affected employees are also not yet known. In its memo, NASA said that the hack probably did not jeopardize any of its missions. “Those NASA Civil Service employees who were on-boarded, separated from the agency, and/or transferred between Centers, from July 2006 to October 2018, may have been affected,” NASA Assistant Administrator Bob Gibbs said in the memo. NASA has started notifying all its employees about the breach, regardless of whether or not their information may have been compromised, so that they could take preventive measures. “Once identified, NASA will provide specific follow-up information to those employees, past and present, whose personally identifiable information (PII) was affected, to include offering identity protection services and related resources, as appropriate,” Gibbs said. —IANS

enabled members to recommend TV shows and movies to their Facebook friends via Messenger or Netflix. “It was never that popular so we shut the feature down in 2015. At no time did we access people’s private messages on Facebook or ask for the ability to do so,” said a Netflix spokesperson. According to Facebook, it worked with partners to build messaging integrations into their apps so people could send messages to their Facebook friends. “No third party was reading your private messages or writing messages to your friends without your permission. Many news stories imply we were shipping over private messages to partners, which is not correct,” stressed Archibong.

Sharma added while speaking at an event “Broadband connectivity through Cable TV Networks” organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. According to the Ministry, currently, of the roughly 30 crore households in India, around 19 crore households have a television connection, approximately 10 crore of which have a connection provided through cable TV network. “A wide market is thus readily available for provisioning Internet

Planets with oxygen don’t necessarily have life: Study IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers have found that the presence of oxygen in a planet’s atmosphere may not be the surest sign that life may be present there. Simulating in the lab the atmospheres of planets beyond the solar system, researchers from the Johns Hopkins University in Maryland successfully created both organic compounds and oxygen, absent of life. The findings, published in the journal ACS Earth and Space Chemistry, serve as a cautionary tale for researchers who suggest the presence of oxygen and organics on distant worlds is evidence of life there. “Our experiments produced oxygen and organic molecules that could serve as the building blocks

of life in the lab, proving that the presence of both doesn’t definitively indicate life,” said lead author Chao He, assistant research scientist at the varsity.

“Researchers need to more carefully consider how these molecules are produced,” Chao He added. Oxygen makes up 20 percent of Earth’s atmosphere and is consid-

ered one of the most robust biosignature gases in Earth’s atmosphere. In the search for life beyond Earth’s solar system, however, little is known about how different energy sources initiate chemical reactions and how those reactions can create biosignatures like oxygen. The team performed the simulation experiments in a specially designed Planetary HAZE (PHAZER) chamber in the lab. The team tested nine different gas mixtures, consistent with predictions for super-Earth and miniNeptune type exoplanet atmospheres. Each mixture had a specific composition of gases such as carbon dioxide, water, ammonia, and methane, and each was heated at temperatures ranging from about 80 to 700 degrees Fahrenheit.

Low self-control can put Rude coworkers can affect your sleep you at cybercrime risk IANS, NEW YORK

U

nable to sleep properly? Blame your co-worker who is rude, uses sarcastic comments and demeaning language. According to a study, workplace uncivilities can not only affect an employee’s sleep but also their partner’s. The study found that when a person experiences rude, discourteous, impolite colleagues at workplace, they tend to ruminate more about work at home. They also face trouble falling asleep or may wake up in the middle of the night.

The research team said that low self-control comes in many forms.

NEW YORK: Are you impulsive when it comes to online shopping or downloading music? If so, then you may be at a higher risk of becoming a victim of cyber attacks, a new study has warned. According to the researchers, hackers and cybercriminals know that people with low self-control are the ones who will be scouring the Internet for what they want — or think they want — which is how they know what sites, files or methods to attack. “An individual’s characteristics are critical in studying how cybercrime perseveres, particularly the person’s impulsiveness and the activities that they engage in while online that have the greatest impact on their risk,” said lead author Tomas Holt, Professor at Michigan State University. “People who show signs of low self-control are the ones we found

more susceptible to malware attacks,” Holt added. The research team said that low self-control comes in many forms. This type of person shows signs of short-sightedness, negligence, physical versus verbal behavior and an inability to delay gratification. For the study, published in the journal Social Science Computer Review, the team assessed the selfcontrol of nearly 6,000 survey participants, as well as their computers’ behavior that could indicate malware and infection. To measure victimization, they asked participants a series of questions about how they might react in certain situations. For computer behavior, they asked about their computer having slower processing, crashing, unexpected pop-ups and the homepage changing on their web browser. —IANS

This also affects the spouse or partner, only when the couple works in the same company or occupation, the researchers said. It is “because work-linked couples have a better idea of what’s

going on in each other’s work, they can be better supporters”, said Charlotte Fritz, Associate Professor from the Portland State University in the US. “They probably know more about the context of the uncivil act and might be more pulled into the venting or problem-solving process,” she added, in the paper detailed in the journal Occupational Health Science. While organizations do everything in their power to create a culture of civility by imposing zero-tolerance policies or offering civility training, uncivilities at workplace are not completely avoidable.

uals who attended only one or two courses lost, on average, 0.9 kilograms (2 pounds) during the same period. Conversely, those who did not complete the course tended to weigh more than those who finished the group mindfulness course. “Individuals who completed the course said they were better able to plan meals in advance and felt more confident in self-management of weight loss moving forward,” said Hanson. Green leafy vegetables may ‘Food labels promote healthier choices’ prevent fatty liver disease IANS, NEW YORK

LONDON: Eating green leafy vegetables in larger portion daily may reduce the risk of developing fatty liver disease, suggests researchers in a mice study. Fatty liver or liver steatosis is a common liver disease and the most important causes are overweight and high alcohol consumption. Green leafy vegetables contain inorganic nitrate that can help prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver. “When we supplemented with dietary nitrate to mice fed with a high-fat and sugar Western diet, we noticed a significantly lower proportion of fat in the liver,” said Mattias

L

Carlstrom, Associate Professor from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. “No one has yet focused on nitrate, which we think is the key. We now want to conduct clinical studies to investigate the therapeutic value of nitrate supplementation to reduce the risk of liver steatosis,” Carlstrom said. —IANS

abels on packaged foods such as nutrition facts, “low-sodium” or “fat-free” as well as calorie counts on restaurant menus, have to some extent encouraged healthier eating choices, say researchers. The research, led by Tufts University researchers, found that labelling reduced consumers’ intake of calories by 6.6 percent, total fat by 10.6 percent and other unhealthy food options by 13 percent. Labelling also increased consumers’ vegetable consumption by 13.5 per cent. In contrast, labelling did not significantly impact consumer intakes of other targets such as total carbo-

hydrate, total protein, saturated fat, fruits, whole grains or other healthy options, the researchers rued. “Many old and new food policies focus on labelling, whether on food packages or restaurant menus. Remarkably, the effectiveness of these labels, whether for changing consumers’ choices or industry

product formulations, has not been clear,” said Dariush Mozaffarian, Dean at Tufts’s Friedman School. For the research, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the team reviewed 60 interventional studies — conducted in the US, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Sonu clarifies his remark about Pakistan IANS, MUMBAI

P

opular singer Sonu Nigam, who has sung in multiple Indian languages, has landed in a controversy after his "I feel like it would be better if I was from Pakistan" comment at a summit. The Kal ho naa ho hitmaker has slammed some journalists for missing "the real content". "Sometimes in an attempt to make headlines catchy and sensational, some journalists miss the real content. Yesterday's AajTak Summit happened so amazing, and look what have they reduced it to... "My point about being better off being born in Pakistan was about

the music companies in India asking Indian singers to pay 40-50 percent of their concerts remunerations to them, and only then

they'll work with those artistes.. but they don't ask the same from the singers from abroad, namely Pakistan," Sonu posted on Facebook. "This was the important point I made... and these guys... changed it to 'I would have been better off born in Pakistan I'd have work come my way.' What do I say. Pathetic." During the summit, the singer was talking about why so many songs are being remixed these days. "Sometimes, I feel like it would be better if I was from Pakistan. At least I would get offers from India," he joked. "Nowadays, singers have to pay

music companies for shows. If we don't shell out the money, they will play songs sung by other singers and highlight them. Then, they will take money from them," he said. "They don't do the same with Pakistani singers. But then why single only Indian singers out? Atif Aslam is a very close friend of mine. He is never asked to pay to sing at shows, neither is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan," he added. Sonu blamed this practice for the current trend of remix songs. "Earlier, the composers, lyricists and singers created a song. Now, the music companies have taken over that job," he said.

the school had cancelled the event “unilaterally” as the “the students were overly enthusiastic”. The post angered many students, who said the university did not know about the event at all. Many students said they waited outside the event site for over an hour. “It is obviously the organizer’s fault for not applying to the school to use an on-campus building,” net user Swim Xinzhu, a student from GUFE, said. “We have held similar events before and there would be no issue if the organizer had reported in advance,” an employee of the varsity said.

ComEd Partners with HFS Chicago Scholars to Provide Real-World STEM Education BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL – Fifty economically disadvantaged high school freshmen from throughout Chicagoland have begun a fivemonth seminar that will introduce them to the fundamentals of energy, smart city technologies, and sustainability and help put them on the path toward science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Sponsored by ComEd and the HFS Chicago Scholars, the program includes five workshops and an immersive projectbased experience with professional engineer mentors. Students will learn and apply the fundamentals of microprocessor-based technology and participate in a team project presentation on June 2, 2019, that will award $4,000 in scholarships among the top three finishers. (L-R) Saeed Ahmad & Harleen Grewal

BY A STAFF WRITER .QUEENS, NY— A man who admitted to crashing his car and leaving his Indian American friend trapped inside the fiery wreck to die has pleaded guilty. Saeed Ahmad, 24, pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Supreme Court on November 24th for causing the death of his friend, Harleen Grewal. Ahmad, who was driving drunk at the time of the October 13th, 2017 drove his car into the median on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. He fled the scene, leaving Grewal inside the car, which was engulfed in flames. Ahmad told the judge in his own words that the morning of October 13th, 2017, he and Grewal were in Manhattan drinking “for several hours” when they decided to drive to Brooklyn, the report added. “I knew my license was suspended but I drove anyway,” said Ahmad, who appeared to be reading from a written statement on the defense table while remaining handcuffed, it said. Ahmad drove car with suspended license and was speeding in his Infiniti G35 around 4 a.m. when he tried to maneuver around a truck to avoid hitting another car. Instead, he crashed into the middle of the expressway. “It exploded. As soon as it caught fire, I jumped out and tried to pull Harleen from the car. She was unconscious, I tried to pull her out, but my arms and legs were burning … I was in shock,” said Ahmad. Ahmad was caught on cellphone video, shot by someone in a passing car and walking away from the engulfed vehicle, hailing a yellow taxi and leaving the scene, the report said. Grewal, a 25-year-old from Astoria, was pronounced dead at the scene after other witnesses called for help. Ahmad instructed the cab driver to take him to a nearby hospital where he took a blood alcohol test that showed his levels above the state’s legal limit of 0.08 percent, the report said. Brooklyn prosecutors charged him with manslaughter, but a grand jury then upgraded the charges to murder. Ahmad pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter, DUI, and leaving the scene of an incident in exchange for four to 14 years in prison, it said. Justice Del Giudice is expected to sentence Ahmad on January 9th, at which time Grewal’s relatives are expected to give victim impact statements, it said.

Restaurateur Acknowledges Trying to Frame Wife as Terrorist

BY A STAFF WRITER HANOVER, MD. — A Maryland restaurateur has acknowledged he paid a man to both frame his wife as a terrorist and burn down his restaurant. 51-year-old Khalil Ahmad pleaded guilty Dec. 12 to stalking his estranged wife. In exchange, cases pending against him in three Baltimore area counties were dropped. Federal court documents say Ahmad already faced financial ruin, and was worried about a divorce settlement’s financial impact. He discussed having her killed, but settled on paying an informant to frame her, with “a ballistic vest, firearm, bottles of alcohol and extremist jihad writings.” Ahmad also planned to collect the insurance policy on his Pakistani restaurant, Allah Rakha, which means, roughly, “protected by God.” According to his plea agreement, Ahmad and the victim were married in July 2015. Before and after their marriage, the victim lived in Howard County, Maryland, and Ahmad lived separately in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, it said. During their marriage, Ahmad threatened to kill the victim using a firearm. In April 2018, the victim informed Ahmad that she wanted a divorce, it added.

Drivers grab money that spilled on NJ Hwy

BY A STAFF WRITER EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ— Nearly $300,000 remains missing a day after two bags of money fell out the back of an armored truck and set off a mad scramble by motorists to grab some of the fluttering bills, police said. More than a half-million dollars spilled from a Brink’s truck near MetLife Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Jets and Giants. East Rutherford police said in a statement that two bags of cash fell. One of the plastic bags had $140,000, and the other held $370,000. Police say the bags fell from an open rear door that had a mechanical issue. Authorities said the bags opened when they hit the roadway, becoming airborne because of the wind and vehicle traffic. The swirling cash led drivers to stop their vehicles and hop out on the highway to gather the money. There were two car crashes as a result, according to police, though it’s unclear if anyone was injured. Police say Brink’s workers and other motorists recovered about $205,000 from the roadway. Five people turned in about $11,000. Online video of the incident showed a sedan with its front bumper smashed as people walked along Route 3 during morning rush hour to pick up the cash. About $294,000 is still missing. Police ask anyone with video of the frenzy to contact them.

Indian American Teen Sentenced For Strangling of Mother BY A STAFF WRITER CARY, NC— A North Carolina teenager who strangled his mother after a disagreement over pizza was sentenced on November 30th to 12 to 15 years in state prison. Indian American Arnav Uppalapati was 16 when he committed the heinous crime in his Cary, North Carolina home, but he is now 19 and will serve his sentence in prison rather than a juvenile detention center. Uppalapati himself called police after he strangled his mother, saying that intruders had entered the home. But from the start of the investigation, the boy was always considered a person of interest in the case. He pleaded guilty after his DNA was found at the crime scene. According to prosecutors, on the night of the fatal strangling, Uppalapati angered his mother, Nalini Tellaprolu, 51 at the time of her death, by ordering a pizza. His mom allegedly slapped him. Uppalapati then grabbed a plastic bag, which he put over his mother’s head to choke her to death. The boy then put his mother’s body in the garage of their home, then called 911 to say he found his dead mother after returning home from school. Arnav’s father, Babu Uppalapati, was never

They also learned that Tellaprolu was very strict about activating her home alarm system. The victim’s body was covered in bruises and she had scratches on her face, neck, torso and arms.

The plastic bag over Tellaprolu’s head was tested in a laboratory, in which the teenager’s DNA was discovered at its knot. Uppalapati strangled his mother for at least four minutes, according to local news reports. Uppalapati’s father and sister were in court, but he allegedly did not look at them as he was led away to begin his sentence, according to the newspaper.

H

igh blood pressure before conception and early in pregnancy may increase the risk of pregnancy loss, even if the woman does not have a hypertension diagnosis, new research has found. “Elevated blood pressure among young adults is associated with a higher risk of heart disease later in life, and this study suggests it may also have an effect on reproductive health,” said lead author of the study Carrie Nobles from Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in Maryland, US. Compared to mothers of infants without congenital heart defects, the researchers found 43 per cent higher risk of any cardiovascular hospitalization in women whose offspring had critical heart defects.

New imaging agent for neurological diseases LONDON: Researchers have developed a new imaging agent that could help guide and assess treatments for people with various neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The agent, which is used in PET scans, targets receptors in nerve cells in the brain that are involved in learning and memory, said the study published in The Journal of Nuclear Medicine. “The significance lies in the fact that we have for the first time developed a useful PET ‘radioligand’ (a radioactive bio-chemical substance) that can be applied to image the ‘GluN2B’ receptor subunit of the ‘NMDA’ receptor complex in humans,” said an author. — IANS

Red meat may up colon cancer risk IANS, LONDON

H

aving a diet free from red meat can help women reduce the risk of a type of colon cancer, suggests new research. “The impact of different types of red meat and dietary patterns on cancer locations is one of the biggest challenges in the study of diet and colorectal cancer,” said lead author Diego Rada Fernandez de Jauregui from the University of Leeds in Britain.

“Our research is looking at this relationship and while further analysis is needed, it could provide information for those with some history of colorectal cancer and those working on prevention,” he said. The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, showed that those regularly eating red meat compared to a red meatfree diet had higher rates of distal colon cancer — cancer found on the descending section of the colon, where faeces is stored.

The study showed that those regularly eating red meat compared to a red meat-free diet had higher rates of distal colon cancer.

The study used data from the United Kingdom Women’s Cohort Study. This cohort included 32,147 women from England, Wales and Scotland. “Our study helps shed light on how meat consumption

may affect colorectum differently and emphasizes the importance of reliable dietary reporting from large groups of people,” said study coauthor Janet Cade, Professor at the University of Leeds.

‘Sanitary pads need to be made biodegradable’ SOMRITA GHOSH, NEW DELHI

P

eriods: The word is no longer a taboo. Both women and men, in recent times, have spoken out about menstrual health and there has been quite a lot of awareness over it through films and other medium. Unfortunately, there is not as much awareness about the ‘long lasting’, ‘stain free’, ‘soft’ sanitary pads which different multinationals promote and which are easily available with any chemist. Experts point to the harm that these plastic-based sanitary napkins have been causing — both to the environment and health. “Most of the sanitary napkins in India are just thrown in the garbage or flushed down the toilet. It is a

havoc environmental challenge as these pads take around 500-800 years to biodegrade,” Swati Singh Sambyal, Waste Management Manager of Centre for Environment Science, told IANS. “And every used sanitary napkin

carries two grams of nonbiodegradable plastic. So the amount of non-biodegradable plastic accumulated every month is very high, a factor strong enough to raise concern over the crisis which environment is facing cur-

rently,” Sambyal noted. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-16 report, around 48 per cent rural women use sanitary napkin while in urban areas the percentage is around 77 per cent. Recent data provided by Menstrual Health Alliance India states that menstrual waste collected across the country, primarily consisting of sanitary napkins which is disposed of as routine waste along with other household garbage, is 45 per cent. According to the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2,000 soiled napkins and blood-soaked cotton are disposed of after segregation into biodegradable and non-biodegradable components.

lifestyle Eating pasta may not make you fat

IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndians have always loved their whiskey, and now they are more open to experimentation, says an industry expert. “People in India have always loved their whiskey. And with increasing aspirations, disposable incomes and exposure to global brands, I believe that they are more open to experiment, upgrade and try out different whiskies from the world,” Jeff Arnett, Master distiller at Jack Daniel’s, told IANS. “The premiumization of the retail environment and the lifestyle of consumers in India is also helping consumers getting more evolved with whiskey. There has been a tremendous increase in the cocktail culture and people are trying out cocktails made with whiskies.

BRIEFS Boman Irani to walk for a charity NEW DELHI: Actor Boman Irani will walk the ramp for an annual fundraising event organized by NGO Lakshyam. The NGO, which works towards upliftment of children and women of at-risk communities through education, employment and resource mobilization, is organizing the event at The Celebration Garden, where many designers will come together to show their support. Boman will walk for designer Varun Bahl at the event which will also see the participation of designers and celebrities.

Taapsee to endorse skin care brand MUMBAI: Actress Taapsee Pannu has been roped in to endorse skin and personal care brand Nivea India. She will endorse the brand’s body wash and shower gel categories. “It’s such an amazing feeling to be roped in by a brand for which you have been a consumer since years.” The quality, reach and range of their products is so wide that it’s an honor to be chosen as their brand ambassador,” Taapsee said in a statement. The Naam Shabana actress was found to be the “perfect ambassador” due to her youth icon status. On the acting front, Taapsee is busy with Manmarziyan. The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap. It also stars Abhishek Bachchan and Vicky Kaushal. —IANS

The premiumization of the retail environment and the lifestyle of consumers in India is also helping consumers getting more evolved with whiskey.

“There are a lot of craft cocktail bars that have come up in India and interestingly there are many women who have adopted whiskey as their preferred choice of drinks,” added Arnett, who was in India for

a masterclass last month. In 2008, Arnett took on the mantle as the seventh distiller in the 150 years of Jack Daniel’s existence. Arnett says India has traditionally been a scotch market.

“But we have seen some good growth here in the past few years,” he added. Pointing at another trend, he said: “I think from our point of view, American whiskies are seeing a renaissance globally, including India. People are increasingly getting fascinated by mixology.” Arnett said “the well-travelled Indian millennial consumers are not very different than their counterparts across this digitally connected world”. What are his future plans for India? “India is one of our key emerging markets globally and has shown consistent double-digit growth for us throughout the last few years. We plan to build on this by continuing to educate consumers here about the nuances of the American whiskey.

Protect your face from sun rays IANS, NEW DELHI

S

ummer time means scorching heat, high humidity and harsh sun rays that can make your skin discolored, dry and dull. From opting for anti-fungal products to using facial mist can be some ways to retain the moisture of your skin. Gaurav Bhargav, Category Head - Beauty, Housejoy and Rinky Kapoor, Cosmetic Dermatologist, Esthetic Clinic give us easy and effective tips to keep skin look hydrated and healthy during the warmest season. Go easy: Since we produce more oil during the summer months, it’s tempting to use harsher scrubs and

face washes. These can strip the skin off its essential oils - so go for a mild foaming cleanser instead. If you perspire a lot, it’s more important to use a gentle cleanser as you will be washing your face multiple times a day.

Sunscreen ready: UV rays are one of the main causes of hyper pigmentation and skin discoloration. But this can be prevented by applying sunscreen an hour before you step out into the sun. Opt for anti-fungal products: Summers attract a lot of germs and fungal infections. It’s best to apply antifungal body washes, lotions and powders around this time to keep the germs and infections at bay. Exfoliate: Gentle exfoliating at least twice or thrice a week will help remove dead skin cells and it will also improve the blood circulation to the face. It can also allow your skin to absorb the moisturizing products better.

TORONTO: If you fear eating pasta will make your kids obese, hang on. A new study suggests that pasta may not contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat if consumed as part of a healthy dietary pattern. Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press and are blamed for the obesity epidemic but this negative attention may not be deserved for pasta, researchers from St. Michael’s Hospital in Ontario said. Unlike most ‘refined’ carbohydrates, which are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, pasta has a low glycemic index (GI), meaning it causes smaller increases in blood sugar levels than those caused by eating foods with a high glycemic index. “The study found that pasta didn’t contribute to weight gain or increase in body fat. In fact, analysis actually showed a small weight loss. So contrary to concerns, perhaps pasta can be part of a healthy diet such as a GI diet,” said lead author John Sievenpiper. For the study, published in the journal BMJ Open, researchers undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis of all of the available evidence from randomized controlled trials, the gold standard of research design. They identified 30 randomized control trials involving almost 2,500 people who ate pasta instead of other carbohydrates as part of a healthy low-glycemic index diet.

Staycations, solo travel: Travel trends for long weekends IANS, NEW DELHI

T

o loosen up and de-stress, millennials have understood that travelling is the best therapy. Utilizing long weekends, Indians are exploring more offbeat locations rather than going to another city with the same hustle bustle, say experts. Dhruv Raj Gupta, Founder and CEO, TripShelf and Dhruv Sharma, CEO and Founder of GuestHouser, have listed few travel trends this year: Staycation is in: Staycation or staying in the same city has undergone a very interesting paradigm shift due to over-tourism. Travellers are increasingly seeking out relaxed, luxury stays at holiday homes

around them in the same city. Choosing home stays over hotels: A growing population of well-travelled urban millennials has grown tired of conventional tourism; which focuses on the simple histor-

ical sightseeing and standardized hotel rooms. This population is looking for something more personal and unique wherein they can take a dip in an unfamiliar culture, and expe-

rience it by living with a native family. They also look forward to eating authentic food of the place they’re visiting and home stays thus prove to be a good option. Exotic or offbeat destinations: Stress busting and exploring unexplored places are the two top reasons for travel on long weekends amongst millennials instead of catching up with friends, research or writing. From quaint solo getaways to off-season mountain escapes and immersive adventures, urban millennials are not nervous about trying unexplored places. They prefer short backpacking trips with just 2-3 nights to stay, and don’t mind taking overnight buses or road trips to destinations within a distance of 400 km from Delhi.
