head of In d i a n Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to the United States later this month, an Indian foreign policy think tank has raised the tantalizing prospect of IndiaU. S. partnership touching $1 trillion by 2030. To elevate the bilateral trade from $120 billion in 2013 to $1 trillion in 2030, Mumbai-based Gateway House, in a research paper authored by a former Indian-American Obama administration official, advocates a different path for the India-U.S. bilateral from all others. Nish Acharya, a senior adviser at Northeastern University, suggests a path “based on the hockey-stick curve more typical of tech start-ups, one that will bring India into the group of the three other countries outside of the G7 which have a deep economic relation-

ship with the U.S.: Israel, Mexico and South Korea”. “Technology, then as now, presents the springboard for the future of a vigorous India-U.S. partnership,” writes Acharya who as the director of innovation and entrepreneurship led the Obama administration’s efforts to nurture economic growth through innovation, entrepreneurship and commercialization. The paper identifies four positions that India must pursue, and four that the U.S. must pursue for the success of the engagement. Suggestions for India include creation of a ‘surge’ — “rapid and intense deployment of talented individuals and technical experts to address critical and immediate challenges in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, energy and agriculture”. Leading and innovating new technologies can create millions of new jobs and opportunities in India, he said. “Towards this, India needs to build a ‘Silicon Swadesh’ — a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem, modelled on Silicon Valley, to support home-grown innovation and entrepreneurship across several Indian cities,” Acharya suggested.

ot long ago, Narendra Modi was not welcome in the United States. But the U.S. is now pulling out all stops to woo him when he comes calling at the White House as India’s prime minister at the end of this month. President Barack Obama will host a dinner for him on September 29 before bilateral talks at the White House the next day and this will be followed by a lunch hosted

by Vice President Joe Biden at the State Department. What a difference an election makes! Long forgotten is Modi’s alleged inaction or complicity in the 2002 Gujarat riots that led the State Department to revoke his visa in 2005. The riverfront diplomacy: Nehru to Modi Unlike the nondescript ‘Glass House’ in Punjab, the 600-year-old city of Ahmedabad was spruced up to host the top leaders of the world’s two most populous countries who met and dined at the Riverfront Park JAIDEEP SARIN, NANGAL (PUNJAB)

A

s Prime Minister Narendra Modi sat down to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront on September 17, it will not be a first such riverfront interaction between two top leaders of both countries. Almost 50 years ago, this small town in Punjab hosted Chinese premier Chou Enlai on the invitation of the country’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The location was the Sutlej riverfront with magnificent hills in the backdrop. The ‘Glass House’, where both Nehru and Enlai met and discussed the “Panchsheel Principles of Mutual Co-Existence”, today stands as a testimony of the historical meeting here. Some of the furniture used at that time, in the mid-1950s, is still there. The small, single room glass house is located inside the complex of the ‘Sutlej Sadan’, a government guest house managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). A small rock placed outside the glass house points out that the ‘Panchsheel Principles’ were discussed at this riverfront location. “It is another matter that despite the bonhomie displayed by both leaders here at that time, both

re-counting the visit of the Chinese premier. Nangal town, located about 110 km from Chandigarh and a population of around 45,000, is more famous for the 225-metre high

Bhakra Dam near here. The Bhakra-Nangal project has been one of the pioneer hydro-electric projects in post-independent India with Prime Minister Nehru describing it as a “Temple of a resurgent India”. Unlike the nondescript glass house in Nangal, the 600-year-old city of Ahmedabad has been spruced up to host the top leaders of the world’s two most populous countries who will meet and dine at the Riverfront Park, on the banks of the Sabarmati river in the upscale Shahi Baug area. The park has got a new look with rustic rural Gujarati ambience especially created for the leaders to indulge in a sumptuous candlelight dinner and some “guppaguppi” (banter in Gujarati). In the fore and backgrounds, there will be a cultural programme of tribal and folk dances and music, along with Garba and Dandiya — the state’s favorite, graceful yet robust dance form — which is what the upcoming nineday Navratri festival is all about. Five huge air-conditioned domes have been created at the picturesque Riverfront Park on the river’s eastern bank, where the two dignitaries and a select 150 guests shall savor pure vegetarian and exquisite Gujarati cuisine prepared by top chefs.

Mamata’s decline: It’s now Ma, Mati, Mafia AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

M

amata Banerjee belongs to the dwindling tribe of regional politicians who look upon their profession through a partisan lens, which means that their focus is almost entirely on advancing the prospects of their parties. They have neither the ability nor the inclination to do anything for their states. Some are also fixated on augmenting their own bank balances. Fortunately, the West Bengal chief minister is not one of them. But she is with the others in the matter of having little idea of purposeful governance and economic progress. In Mamata’s case, it isn’t caste which propelled her to the top of the popularity charts around 201011, but the promise of change or ‘poriborton’ from the three-decadeold Left rule. The change was to be not only from economic stagnation, caused by the flight of capital because of militant trade union tactics and frequent strikes, but also from the

high-handedness of the Communist cadres who ruled the roost in virtually every locality. It was Mamata’s courageous stance against these political goons, exemplified during the agitations in Singur and Nandigram against the acquisition of land, which laid the foundation of her electoral triumph in 2011. The slogan behind her victory was ‘Ma-Mati-Manush’, which underlined her proximity to ordinary people and the pursuit of a compassionate version of politics unlike the hauteur and aggression of the Marxists. However, the ‘poriborton’ which she promised has turned out to be for the worse. The reasons are, first, her inability to make the transition from being a rabble-rouser to an administrator. Almost all her acts have been motivated by a desire to grab the headlines — from walking out of the Manmohan Singh government to opposing Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for the president’s post. Secondly, her decision to oust the Tatas from Singur, where the first Nano factory was to

Mamata couldn’t make the transition from a rabble-rouser to administrator.

be built, has meant that she has burnt her boats so far as the industrial community is concerned. Where her predecessor in the chief minister’s chair, Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, realized in the twilight of his tenure the folly of the Marxists in driving out the industrialists, Mamata began her stint by making the same mistake in Singur and is now paying the price for it. But economic stagnation is not her only Achilles heel. Under her, the cadres of the ruling Trinamool Congress have begun to emulate the Marxist goons of the earlier years in full measure — terrorizing ordinary people and members of rival parties and extorting money from builders and entrepreneurs. Hence, the coinage of the term, Ma-Mati-Mafia, by the chief minister’s critics. Mamata’s own conduct has exposed her to a great deal of flak, especially her cynical reaction to incidents of rape, such as the one on Park Street in 2012 which she described as ‘sajano ghatona’ or a concocted incident.

Jindal to decide on race for presidency after Nov Decision would not hinge on polls or fundraizing, reveals the Indian-American Louisiana governor IANS, NEW YORK

L

ouisiana’s Indian-American Republican Governor Bobby Jindal has acknowledged that he’s considering a 2016 run for president, and will make his decision after the November Congressional elections. His decision would not hinge on polls or fundraizing, he told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on September 17. Only three percent of Republican primary voters backed him in a new CNN/ORC poll of Republican presidential possibles in New Hampshire, which holds the first primary in the U.S. presidential election cycle. The governor finished at the bottom of a field of 11 potential presidential candidates. But he says that would not be a factor, the Monitor reported. “If I were to decide to run for 2016, it would have nothing to do with polls or fundraising,” said the governor. “It would simply be based on the

“The first time I ran for office, I was... polling within the margin of error, which means I was at zero.” “There’s no reason to be coy,” he said. “I am thinking, I am praying about whether I’ll run in 2016.” Jindal called President Barack Obama the worst American president since Jimmy Carter.

NEW YORK: The public reception organized by the Indian community in the United States in honor of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York on September 28 would be hosted by Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri and a popular Indian-origin news anchor. Davuluri is the first IndianAmerican to be crowned as Miss America 2014, and Hari Sreenivasan is a PBS NewsHour Weekend anchor. “Citizens of the world’s greatest democracy are eager to hear from the leader of the world’s largest democracy,” Anand Shah, spokesperson of Indian American Community Foundation (IACF), was quoted to have said by a news website. The foundation has the support of more than 400 IndianAmerican organizations from across the country. Shah added that there is a great enthusiasm among Indian Americans for the public reception of Narendra Modi. “Tickets to the event are free. The program has been generously sponsored by thousands of individuals who are excited to participate in an unprecedented show of support to promote a stronger friendship between the U.S. and India,” Shah said in a IACF statement. — IANS

Obama may send ground troops to Iraq A more combative approach is needed to eliminate IS: US ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

M

artin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said on September 16 that US ground troops could be called into battle against the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria if circumstances require. So far, US President Barack Obama has deployed about 1,600 military advisors to Iraq, but has stressed that “boots are not on the ground” in a combat role. However, Dempsey said Obama has ordered him to come back on a “case-by-case basis” if the use of ground forces need to be reconsidered. “My view at this point is that this coalition is the appropriate way forward. I believe that will prove true. But if it fails to be true, and if there are threats to the US then I, of course, would go back to the president and make a recommendation that may include the use of US military ground forces,” Dempsey said during a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Dempsey said one circumstance that could require the use of

Paris meet pledges military aid to Iraq PARIS: Representatives of 29 countries, including the five member of the UN Security Council, agreed to provide Iraqi authorities with “any means necessary including military assistance” to help in cracking down on the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, France’s foreign ministry said. However, Western and Arab officials did not elaborate on what would be the envisaged military support.

ground troops would be if Iraqi or Kurdish forces were poised to retake Mosul, which IS forces captured in June. “It could very well be part of that particular mission to provide close combat advising or accompanying for that mission,” Dempsey added. The general’s remarks opened the door to increased US military involvement in Iraq at a time when liberals in Congress are increasingly anxious about President Obama’s request to train rebel forces in Syria. Dempsey emphasized that military actions would be “part of a whole of government effort that works to disrupt IS financing, interdict the movement of foreign fighters across borders, and undermine the IS message.” “Within a coalition of capable, willing regional and international partners, I believe we can destroy IS in Iraq, restore the Iraqi-Syrian border, and disrupt IS in Syria,” he said. “ISIL will ultimately be defeated when their cloak of religious legitimacy is stripped away and the populations on which they have imposed themselves reject them.”

US for better India-China relations WASHINGTON: Ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India, the US says it has a very broad relationship with India and wants New Delhi to have good relationships with all the countries in the region, including China. “We’re all looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi to Washington,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told foreign media on September 15 when asked how the US viewed Xi’s India visit ahead of Modi’s upcoming US trip. Modi will have summit meetings with

President Barack Obama Sep 29 and 30 and would have “a number of meetings, I’m sure, with my colleagues at the State Department as well”, she said. “Our relationship with India really is a very broad one where we talk about a whole range of topics,” Harf said when asked by a Chinese correspondent about US expectations about the bilateral meeting between Obama and Modi. “And I think that we want India to have good relationships with all the countries in the region, including China,” she said.

Ukraine grants ‘special status’ to region KIEV: The Ukrainian Parliament on September 16 approved two bills offering major concessions to independence-seeking insurgents and more autonomy to eastern regions where unrest has been raging since mid-April. The bill to grant amnesty to detained insurgents, who participated in the violent confrontation with government troops, was backed by 287 of 342 lawmakers present at the assembly, Xinhua reported. The new law would apply only to those insurgents, who have not committed “serious crimes” such as murder or torture. The other bill, submitted to the parliament by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, which offers a “special status” to regions in eastern Ukraine for

three years, was approved with 277 votes in favor. The “special status” of the regions increases the authority of local communities by transferring more economic, financial and administrative powers to the regional governments. ormer Pakistani interior minister Rehman Malik and PML-N MP Ramesh Kumar Wakwani were at the receiving end of passengers’ indignation at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, where the two leaders were blamed for having delayed the take-off by more than two hours, booed and barred from boarding the flight. Pakistan International Airlines PK-370 was scheduled to leave Karachi for Islamabad at 7 pm, but it was reportedly delayed for more than two hours and some 220 passengers were kept waiting. According to the Dawn, the

national carrier has suspended two of its employees for the delayed take-off. PIA spokesperson Mashood Tajwar confirmed that initial delay was due to technical difficulties, but further delay was unnecessary and hence shift manager Nadeem Abro and terminal manager Shehzad have been suspended. A video showing the leaders getting booed and questioned by the passengers, has gone viral online, triggering a debate on “the VIP culture” in the country. In the video, Rehman Malik is seen being stopped and questioned by furious passengers. When Malik approaches the jetway connecting the terminal to the aircraft, he is confronted by irate passengers.

ISLAMABAD: Police on September 17 registered murder cases against Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and several of his ministers in the killing of opposition activists during the anti-government protests here, police and lawyers said. A local court had ordered the police Monday to register the cases against the prime minister and 11 top officials, including the interior, defense and railways ministers and the city’s chief commissioner and police chief, Xinhua reported. The Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) of religious leader Tahirul Qadri had approached the court to register cases in the killing two of its workers in police action on August 31 and September 1. Clashes had erupted between the demonstrators and the riot police when the protesters tried to march to the Prime Minister’s House. At least two protesters were killed and some 500 people, including dozens of policemen, were injured in the clashes.

China, Lanka ink currency swap deal BEIJING: China’s central bank announced on September 16 that it has signed a 10 billion yuan (about $1.63 billion) currency swap deal with the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The three-year agreement aims to promote bilateral trade and strengthen financial cooperation between the two central banks, Xinhua quoted the People’s Bank of China’s (PBOC) website as saying, adding that the deal could be extended upon agreement by the two sides. Two weeks ago, the PBOC signed an agent investment agreement with its Sri Lankan counterpart (the Central Bank of Sri Lanka) which allows the former, on

behalf of the latter, to make investments in China’s interbank bond market. Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping Tuesday arrived in Sri Lanka, the first state visit by a Chinese head of state to the island nation in decades. Sri Lanka is the third leg of Xi’s ongoing four-country Asia trip.

Three NATO troops killed in Kabul suicide bombing KATHMANDU: Three NATO service members or troops were killed and 13 Afghan civilians were wounded in a suicide car bombing in central Kabul on September 16, the coalition forces confirmed in a statement. “We can confirm three International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) members died as a result of an enemy attack in Kabul today. Currently, Afghan officials and ISAF are reviewing the incident,” the NATO-led ISAF said in the statement. The attack took place around 8.10 a.m. when the bomber targeted an ISAF convoy in a four-lane street which leads to the Kabul interna-

tional airport, Xinhua reported. The statement gave neither the nationalities of the victims nor the details about the incident in keeping with the ISAF policy, adding it was ISAF policy to refer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities. Furthermore, 13 Afghan civilians were also wounded and 17 civilian cars and several military vehicles were destroyed or damaged in the blast, according to the Afghan interior ministry. Earlier reports said that three civilians and four NATO soldiers were killed in the attack.

H

ollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived here on September 15 amidst tight security to attend the audio launch of Vikram-starrer Tamil romantic-thriller I. The audio launch at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, where the star of the Terminator film series, shared the dais with Tamil movie superstar Rajinikanth. Directed by Shankar, I also stars

Amy Jackson, Suresh Gopi and Upen Patel in important roles. It will release around Diwali. Schwarzenegger even gave the film an imaginary title King Conan, inspired from the film franchise Conan the Barbarian” and Conan the Destroyer. “Shankar is a great filmmaker. He comes up with superb special effects in his films. I would love to work with him someday. Let’s make King Conan, Shankar,” Schwarzenegger told reporters. The makers of the film organized a special bodybuilding act

featuring a dozen local bodybuilders as a tribute to Arnold, who is a bodybuilding legend. The Terminator series star, who watched in awe, congratulated all of them. He was also happy that Shankar had featured them in the film. “It’s great to see all this talent. It reminds me of my olden days. It’s wonderful that Shankar has given them a chance to star in the movie,” he said. Actor Vikram plays a bodybuilder, who aspires to win Mr. Tamil Nadu title in I.

Vidya looks forward to ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ IANS, MUMBAI

ersatile actress Vidya Balan is looking forward to shoot Mohit Suri’s Hamari Adhuri Kahani. She says it would be her second intense love story after her debut film Parineeta. The film’s shoot starts in October. “I try and give every character I play a particular look. So this (Hamari...) is definitely towards that...we are preparing for it,” the 35-year-old said here at an event to raise funds for the underprivileged. “All I can say is that it is an intense love story and I haven’t done (such) a love story after Parineeta, and so I am looking forward to it,” she added. “Mohit Suri is a director whose work I have always enjoyed immensely. (Mahesh) Bhatt saab is writing the script, so it’s all come together beautifully,” she said.

Sonam Kapoor to skip Pakistan tour MUMBAI: Prior work commitments will keep actress Sonam Kapoor away from the promotions of her forthcoming film Khoobsurat in Pakistan, the home country of her film’s co-star Fawad Khan. She says she would love to visit the country sometime in future. Despite her absence from the film’s promotions, Sonam plans to make her presence felt. “I was going to Pakistan (earlier). But (now) I am recording a message and I am doing as much (interviews with) Pakistani media as I can to promote the film,” she said. However, Sonam is very eager to visit Pakistan. “I really, really want to go. My forefathers are from Peshawar and my mom’s side of the family comes from Karachi. So there is so much of a connection...I am just a second generation Indian,” Sonam said. — IANS

‘Madamji’ script, cast in final stage MUMBAI: Actor Priyanka Chopra, whose latest biopic on Olympic medal winner boxer Mary Kom was a runaway hit says the team of her debut film production Madamji is currently giving finishing touches to its script and finalizing its cast. She is glad Madhur Bhandarkar is on board to direct the project as she trusts him immensely. We are working on final stage of scripting and casting of Madamji. The casting is yet to be decided. So, we won’t start before November,” Priyanka said. Priyanka will herself star in Madamji, but as one understands, the rest of the cast is yet to be locked. “I’m really grateful Madhur agreed to be my first director in my first production venture. We tried to work in some other films as well, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. I completely trust Madhur,” she said.

N

ow here’s the thing. “Finding Fanny” has a dead cat in a traveling car that the cat’s owner know to be dead and towards the end, a dead painterartist whom nobody cares whether he’s dead or not. Between these two points of mortality shared by the script lies a huge unshared joke about life and shows it screws you up when you aren’t watching. Watching this weirdly wonderful ode to a longforgotten anthem of love, I felt like a person who receives a really costly gift which is of no use to him. “Really? This is for me? Wow! But what do I do with it???”..... You know that feeling of holding a precious parcel which you can’t tell the right-side-up from the wrong-side-down? That’s “Finding Fanny”. Homi Adajania’s world of insulated eccentricities invites you into its languorous folds with a yawning casualness. These characters, so fastidiously crafted to

appear utterly adrift, couldn’t care less whether we like them or not. That’s what make them so deliciously appealing. They are a gallery of weirdos content to be perceived as such, as long as they are allowed to lead their lives the way they want. There’s the very engaging Dimple Kapadia playing a prosthetic-ridden, bum-happy motherin-law to the widowed Angie (Deepika Padukone). Every character in “Finding Fanny” is supremely selfish, although some like the incandescent Angie(Deepika) and the surly Savio (Arjun Kapoor) pretend to care for what happens to others. Angie and Savio will make up and make out before the film is through. “It will get better, right?” Angiel asks Savio - hopefully about the sex. Does Naseer’s character finally find Fanny? Frankly it doesn’t really matter at the end. And I am not sure if that’s good or bad. — Subhash K Jha

SRK to shoot for one film at a time MUMBAI: In his over two-decade career, Shah Rukh Khan has maintained his on-screen charisma, his craze and an average of two and a half films per year and he wants to keep it that way. The Bollywood Badshah says he has no intention of doing multiple projects at a time because he doesn’t want to miss out on enjoying the filmmaking process and indulging in other activities. The last time fans saw him on the screen was when he came riding on Chennai Express. Running at notch eight, the action-romantic comedy made the quickest `2 billion, thus multiplying manifold the megastar’s stake in filmdom. After over 14 months, he is returning with a completely different genre — heist drama Happy New Year. Scheduled for Diwali release, the big budget multi-starrer is high on technology. Asked why such a long gap and pat came the reply: “I like making one film at a time.” “I can’t do more than one film at a time... I am through with that. Happy New Year is a big film. It had 170 days of shooting,” Shah Rukh told IANS in an interview. Without a pause, he pointed out that he never took up multiple projects in his career and, on an average, did two to three films in a year. “I have never done that actually. In 25 years, I have done 55 full-length feature films. So, I have never been able to do more than two to two and a half films in a year even in the times when people used to 12 films,” he said, adding the rest were guest appearances. “I would like to keep it that way. I enjoy doing one film. I like finishing it, taking some time off, spending time with kids and then get on to the next one,” said Shah Rukh who became active in showbiz in the late 1980s. Hopping from one project to another is not his cup of tea.

Salman booked for hurting religious sentiments NAGPUR: A case was filed against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in Maharashtra for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the Muslim community, a police official said here on September 12. He was booked on a complaint by Vidarbha unit chief of All Indian Qaumi Tanzeem Mohammed A. Ali for deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs. In his complaint, Ali said Salman Khan’s NGO ‘Being Human’ had organized a fashion show in Mumbai sometime ago in which a model walked the ramp with the word ‘Allah’ written on her dress in Arabic. “We have received a complaint against the actor and booked him... Further investigations are underway,” a police official said. Ali also submitted video clips of the fashion show to substantiate his claim.

Loved working with my father: Arjun Kapoor MUMBAI: Actor Arjun Kapoor enjoyed the experience of working in Tevar, co-produced by his father Boney and uncle Sanjay, as they didn’t impose any pressure on him. “Tevar is about a simple boy and his love story. It’s emotional and overwhelming. I loved working with my father and uncle. None of them put any pressure on me and gave me my space to perform as an actor,” Arjun told IANS. Directed by Amit Sharma, Tevar also features Sonakshi Sinha in the female lead. Meanwhile, Arjun is excited about his English language Bollywood entertainer Finding Fanny, which was a new experience for him. He says when a Hindi actor does an English film, he tries to stress on the words to get the lines across. But director Homi Adajania wanted all actors to be as free in their dialogue delivery as possible.

‘I have a cleavage! You got a problem?’ MUMBAI: The usually calm and composed Deepika Padukone has come up in arms against a leading daily which had apparently published a rather demeaning piece of news about her dressing at an event. Deepika Padukone had worn a low cut dress designed by Anamika Khanna for the trailer launch of Chennai Express last year. This dress had come under the daily’s scanner for the design. The daily, on September 14 morning, reframed and retweeted the photo-story. When Deepika read the tweet followed by a picture gallery of similar dressing faux-pas by other actresses, she lost her calm and gave the news portal a befitting reply in a series of tweets. The fans of the actress have also come out in her support. At the time of filing this article, that’s within 60 minutes of Deepika’s tweet, there were almost 1550 retweets. Deepika attended the music launch of Happy New Year next day and when she was asked about the controversy, she said: “I think I have said whatever I had to and everything else will be taken care of.” On September 14, The Times of India tweeted: “OMG: Deepika Padukone’s cleavage show”, along with a link to the related story. The story and tweet has since been removed, but not before Padukone shared an angry response on Twitter. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh praised her and said: “What she said was wonderful... we don’t have the guts to do what she has done, but we believe in it and we support it.”

Katrina Kaif shoots for ‘Phantom’ MUMBAI: Actor Katrina Kaif is busy shooting for her upcoming film, Phantom. The film, costarring Saif Ali Khan and directed by Kabir Khan, focuses on the geopolitical consequences of the 26/11 attacks that shook the city in 2008. The director was shooting the exteriors of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which was one of the places attacked by terrorists. The scene shows Katrina arriving at the scene of the crime. It is an important moment in the movie and the unit was anxious for obvious reasons. Due to the sensitivity of the location, procuring permissions was a time consuming process. And that is why Kabir applied for and got approval months in advance. To avoid star-gazers, the crew arrived on location at 5.30 am and began filming at the crack of dawn. By 8.30 a.m., major portions had been wrapped up without hiccups. Another scene in the film, required three Pakistani artistes. But the ongoing political crisis in Islamabad has delayed the visa process and the trio will be able to join the team only later in the year. For now, their Indian counterparts, including Katrina, are shooting in Lahore, recreated at Filmistan Studio, Goregaon. “The portions which are shown as Lahore in the film have been extensively shot in Malerkotla, Punjab, which boasts architecture similar to that of the Pakistani city. And for the patchwork, instead of going all the way to Punjab, a set of Lahore was created in Filmistan,” revealed the source.

Nobody would dare to mess with me: Bips MUMBAI: Actress Bipasha Basu, who describes herself as “fiery and forthright” has shot down “blind stories” of an unsensory happening related to her on the set of Sajid Khan’s Humshakals, saying no one can “mess around” with her. Recently, there was a buzz that Sajid had made an “indecent proposal” to Bipasha during the shooting of Humshakals— a movie she had stepped back from promoting prior to its release as she was unhappy with the outcome. But the actress says the rumor about any indecency is just that — a rumor. Setting the record straight, Bipasha said: “”A lot of unsavory stories are going around about what happened during the shooting. I’ve been reading ‘blind’ stories about some terrible situations that happened during Humshakals. “Let me set the record straight. These are completely false stories. I’m not the kind of girl anyone can mess around with. I’m fiery and forthright and I don’t take bulls**t from anyone.

ctor Mrudhula Basker aka Naveena, who features in a sensuous promo song for Ram Gopal Varma’s (RGV) upcoming Telugu thriller Ice Cream 2, says she was never “forced to do the song” and that the filmmaker hasn’t exploited her. Reacting to the posts on social media claiming Varma exploited her, she said: “I was explained the context of the song. Ramu sir never tried to exploit me.” “We sat down and discussed the song before I agreed to do it. I really liked the song because it’s an English number in a Telugu film, which is unique. But nobody is seeing that,” Mrudhula, who was re-christened as Naveena by RGV, told IANS. She also says that there is a thin line between being glamorous and dirty. “If a particular look doesn’t look vulgar to me when I see myself in the mirror, I wouldn’t mind doing it. If it’s vulgar, I won’t do it. This is a sensuous song and as an actor, I have tried not to make it look dirty,” she said. “I also did it because of my faith in RGV sir. People said that I accepted it to get noticed. Of course, any actress would get noticed for this kind of role. When there’s a way to get noticed, what’s wrong in using that?” she said. Shooting for the song was Naveena’s biggest challenge because she had not done something like

this before. “I wanted to be confident and comfortable while doing it. We shot the song in a forest and walking bare feet wasn’t easy. All this made the whole experience very challenging,” she added. Naveena, who plays an “ultra modern aspiring actress” in Ice Cream 2, was signed in “20 minutes”. “RGV liked my pictures and wanted to meet me. Everything was finalized within 20 minutes. Working with him was like a marathon because the entire film was shot in seven days. He used the flow-cam technology and a lot of improvization was done on the sets,” she said. “We were never asked to rehearse before the shoot. I was never given the dialogues in advance to prepare. We did everything on the sets,” she added. Naveena, who has a Tamil film ready for release, wants to do an “out-and-out commercial film after Ice Cream 2.

He will resume shooting from September 18, said his manager. He was admitted to Apollo hospital on September 16. “Kamal sir has been discharged. He’s perfectly fit and will start shooting from tomorrow (Thursday),” Kamal’s manager told IANS. Kamal said that while shooting in Kerala recently he “ate at roadside ‘dhabas’, probably drank infected water. One of those makeshift food places did not agree

Performance key for Aishwarya ctress Aishwarya Rajesh wishes to be known as a “performer” and hence she prefers roles which are performance-oriented. Playing glamorous roles is something any actor can do, she believes. “I feel there are a very few actresses who can perform really well. I want to be one among them. I want to be known as a performer. Anybody can do glamorous roles. With the latest technology, any girl can be shown beautifully on screen,”

Aishwarya told IANS. Aishwarya feels her dream to be known as a performer will be fulfilled when her Tamil film Kaaka Muttai hits the screens. Kaaka Muttai, about two brothers in a slum, recently had its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival and it received critical acclaim. “I really can’t talk about my character, but my director informed me that the film was received very well. People in Toronto asked about me and wanted to know if I had done any international projects before. I’ve got such good recognition,” the actor said.

In a petition filed in the Hyderabad High Court, Jagan complained that the government scaled down the ‘Z’ category security which was given to him three years ago. He said the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government scaled down the

Yet it has become an inescapable barometer to reflect and look at approval rating, from political leaders to CEOs, notwithstanding the challenges they face. Troubled by “unscientific and politically motivated bifurcation of a prosperous State” and loss of a capital that was a cash cow, N. Chandrababu Naidu in his third stint as Chief Minister looks a shade fatigued as he faces the 100-day test, struggling to fulfil his long list of election promises and focuses on rebuilding a State from the scratch. he Supreme Court may soon have to adjudicate over the Goa government’s questionable efforts to restart the tainted multi-billion rupee iron ore mining sector, which has been plagued by a `350 billion scam involving a nexus of politicians and bureaucrats. A recent order of the Bombay High Court’s Panaji bench sanctioning renewal of 27 iron ore mining leases, which triggered a controversy, will be placed before the Supreme Court for scrutiny,

according to petitioner and green NGO Goa Foundation. The Goa-based Foundation’s Claude Alvares said he was forced to approach the apex court because of the Goa government’s decision not to appeal against the high court order in the apex court.

“The high court’s directions appear to be at variance with the directions issued by the Supreme Court,” Alvares said. Last month’s high court order came a few months after the April 2014 order of the Supreme Court which, while lifting the ban on mining (imposed in September 2013), rendered all mining leases in Goa invalid from 2007 and all mining carried out in these leases illegal. “Since the Goa government will not do so or does not appear willing to do so, the Goa Foundation will not hesitate to take that action instead,” Alvares said.

nce vaunted and an object for appropriation of cheap brownie points for Goa’s political parties while it was being constructed, Goa’s 10-monthyoung new airport terminal, built at a cost of Rs.345 crore ($56.5 million), is suddenly “nobody’s child”. The still shiny new airport building at the Dabolim International Airport, Goa’s only aviation facility that functions from a military base, has now become a political hot potato for the opposition Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for being badly

planned, tardy, smelly and of defective construction standards with several loose ends and even “unsafe”. Inaugurated last December, Congress legislator Mauvin Godinho claims the airport is shocking-

ly unplanned and disaster prone. “It is shocking that they have built the parking bay for planes near fuel dumps. There are so many planes parked there during peak hours and they are in danger in case of an accident,” Godinho told IANS.

DEVOTEES THRONG EDISON FOR GANESH FESTIVAL

Sacnite Navratri fete from Sept 26

S A cultural program to entertain devotees during the Ganesh fete

BY A STAFF WRITER

E

DISON (NJ) -- A grand 3-day religious festival for traditional South Asians Ganesh Utsav was orchestrated by 1947 Production & Entertainment, Inc. in association with Zee TV & India.com in Edison, NJ. Acros the Hill Top complex, the main artery of Oak tree road turned into a flickering saffron Gajanana reception road as the Ganesh festival was celebrate for the first time in the United States on a huge scale with full pomp and flair. A replica of Lord Ganesha, an imposing 14-feet-tall idol, was specially brought in from Mumbai, India and and placed on a platform, visible from far and away, under a big canopy. On August 29, the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the “Emperor of the faithful” and ‘remover of all ills and obstacles’, was ‘invited in’ with his family. Amid traditional Sanskrit chanting,

The eye-catching Ganesh idol

the impressive idol of the Elephant God was installed by the Divine Cosmic Consciousness, a religious ritual called “Prana Pratistha”. Hundreds of faithful followers witnessed this entirely spiritual experience with chants of “Ganapati Bappa Moriya” flowing through the atmosphere. In three days, thousands of devotees patiently waited their turn in scordhing heat to have a closer look of the eyecatching idol and bow to the Almighty God who is always first to be invited to all pujas. Devottes arrived all the way from Boston, Atlanta, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Connecticut, and even Canada and Colorado to partake in the one-of-akind Ganesh Festival. In another first, over 1000 lbs of modak, a sweet dumpling, believed to be the favorite food of Ganesh, especially created by Chowpatty Caterers, was on

display to the right side of the gigantic idol for the benefit of the worshippers. On August 31, at the end of this highly religious event, the modak was distributed among devotees as Prasad. An unparalleled planning and execution was evident all around. With thousands of devotees in attendance, the festival amply supported by Township of Edison, the police, fire and other departments, was an amazing event. Zee TV brought in the two winners of their fantastic show “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” in 2012, Jasraj Joshi as well as Arshpreet Kaur, to perform live for two hours each, on August 30 and 31. Along with them, there were a number of performances from local talents to keep the audience absorbed on a separate entertainment stage. It was a moment frozen in time as thousands bade adieu to the revered Lord Ganesh until next year.

OS ANGELES (CA) -- Hanmi Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: HAFC) (‘Hanmi’), the holding company for Hanmi Bank (the ‘Bank’), has announced that it has completed its acquisition of Central Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of United Central Bank, effective as of August 31. With the merger complete, Hanmi becomes the second largest Korean American bank in the United States with 50 banking offices and three loan production offices serving different communities across California, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. The combined entity has approximately $4.4 billion in assets, $2.8 billion in

gross loans, and $3.7 billion in deposits, providing Hanmi with the leading deposit market share among Korean American banks in Illinois, Texas, and Virginia along with a substantial market share in California. “The completion of our merger with United Central Bank is a momentous occasion for Hanmi,” said C. G. Kum, president and CEO. “Having opened our first branch in Los Angeles in 1982 with the clear mission of helping immigrants achieve the American Dream, we are thrilled to now provide our customers with 50 branches across the United States. “With this expanded geographic presence, we will broaden our market share

6,000 student visa-holders play vanishing trick BY A STAFF WRITER

W

ASHINGTON, DC -- In a major lapse that poses security threats to the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has lost track of more than 6,000 foreign nationals who entered the country on student visas, overstayed it and then vanished. All of them were on a list of people who were of ‘heightened concern’ to DHS officials. DHS officials disclosed the breadth of the student visa problem submitted as part of an investigation into persistent complaints about the nation’s entry program for students. Immigration officials have struggled to keep track of the rapidly-increasing numbers of foreign students coming to the US on F-1 and other visas, now in excess of one million each year. The immigration agency’s own figures show that 58,000 students overstayed their visas in the past year. Of those, 6,000 were referred to agents for follow-up because they were determined to be of heightened concern. According to Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, 26 student visa holders have been arrested in the US on terror-related charges. Tightening up the student visa program was one of the major recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission, after it was determined that the hijacker who flew Flight 77 into the Pentagon, Hani Hanjour, had entered the US on a student visa but never showed up for school. The report also pointed out that despite repeated concerns raised by Congress, federal immigration officials have also continued to grant schools certification to accept overseas applicants even if the schools lack accreditation, state certification, or any obvious measure of academic rigor. There are now more than 9,000 schools on the government approved list. The list includes

from our core Korean American customer base to the wider Asian American and mainstream communities, making Hanmi the first Korean American Bank to extend into these additional communities.” Kum continued, “I am very pleased that the transaction has proceeded so smoothly, and we can now fully focus our efforts on integrating the two banks as quickly as possible. With the new Hanmi Bank, all of our loyal customers will have the benefit of a larger product offering, improved lending capacity, and enhanced customer service.” The transaction was announced December 16, 2013 and approved by shareholders of Central Bancorp on April 17, 2014. The combined companies will operate as Hanmi Financial Corporation

and Hanmi Bank, respectively, with banking operations conducted under the Hanmi Bank brand. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Hanmi Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hanmi Financial Corporation, provides services to the multi-ethnic communities across California, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey and New York with 50 full-service branches as well as loan production offices in Texas, Virginia, and Washington State. Hanmi Bank specializes in commercial, SBA and trade finance lending, and is a recognized community leader. Hanmi Bank’s mission is to provide a full range of quality products and premier services to its customers and to maximize shareholder value.

Deported Indian college teacher back in Arakanas BY A STAFF WRITER

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla,

such top flight American colleges as Harvard and Yale, but it also includes 86 beauty schools, 36 massage schools and nine schools that teach horseshoeing. Foreign students can enter the US on a visa to study acupuncture, hair braiding, or join academies that focus on tennis and golf. Once the student arrives in the US, it is up to the schools to keep track of the visa-holder’s whereabouts, and report to the government if they repeatedly miss class. A number of forprofit schools appear to have been operating with a primary goal of selling visas, not educating students, said the report. Thomas Kean, 9/11 Commission CoChair, says that the government is yet to address the security gaps the program has created. He said he was stunned the federal government continues to lose track of so many foreign nationals who had entered the country with student visas. He noted that, even before the 9/11 terror attacks, federal officials had been aware of the gaps in the student visa program. The man who drove the van containing explosives into the World Trade Center garage in 1993 was also a student visa holder who was a no-show at school. The effort to expand options for foreign study appear to be prevailing. According to figures gathered by congressional investigators, the number of foreign nationals obtaining visas to study in the US has grown from 662,966 in 2003 to more than 1.2 million in 2012.

RKANSAS - A community college professor, who was denied re-entry to the US after making a humanitarian aid trip to Guatemala with her church, finally returned home to Nashville, Arkansas on August 22. Molly Sirigiri, who teaches general biology, microbiology, and anatomy and physiology at Cossatot Community College University of Arkansas, had departed on July 1 with a team from the First Baptist Church of Nashville, Ark., for a week-long mission at the Casa Aleluya orphanage in Guatemala City. But on her return home, she was held back from her team at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. After a 24-hour detention in Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, Sirigiri was flown to India, via Munich. The Nashville Leader reported that the Indian Consulate in Houston told the mission leader that it appeared Sirigiri had applied for an extension of her H-1B visa and was awaiting approval when she traveled to Guatemala. She was not eligible for an automatic revalidation and therefore denied re-entry. In lieu of deportation, US officials allowed Sirigiri to withdraw her pending application for extension of her visa and apply afresh, according to the Consulate. University officials said they paid a “premium processing fee” to have a decision rendered within 15 days. In a press statement, Cossatot Community College Chancellor Steve Cole said the university worked with Arkansas Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman to get Sirigiri’s visa processed expeditiously.

“Molly is a special person to UA Cossatot. Not only is she a teaching rock star for us, but more importantly, she is a vital part of her church and community. The best possible result came from this, and that was her quick re-entry back into the United States,” said Cole. Sirigiri could not be reached for comment, but said in a press statement: “I am thankful to be back in Nashville and teaching. I am very thankful for people I consider my family in the United States.” She attended church services two days after she returned home to Arkansas and began teaching again on August 25. Sirigiri, 33, is a native of Hyderabad, and obtained her bachelors and masters degrees in English and microbiology from the University of Osmania in Hyderabad. She served for five years as the chair of the microbiology department at Rani Rudrani Devi College in Hyderabad, before emigrating to the U.S. in 2008 to teach science at Kingstree High School in South Carolina. Sirigiri joined the Life Sciences faculty at Cossatot in 2011

ormer board president Shashank Manohar on September 13 ruled out contesting the impending elections against N. Srinivasan and accused his successor of taking advantage of the amendment of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) constitution for seeking a third term in office. Manohar said the board’s constitution was amended in 2012 to remove the cap on the number of terms in office of key office-bearers. He added that all big guns supported it in the hope that they, too, could stage a comeback or someone like senior BJP politician and Union Minister Arun Jaitley, a former BCCI vice-president and exDelhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) chief, need not wait for his turn for over a decade. Manohar, 56, also rubbished rumors that he has joined hands with suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi in the campaign against Srinivasan and would also oppose his re-entry into BCCI. “When the constitution was amended in 2012 it was done specifically to facilitate Mr. Arun

17th Asian Games torch arrives in Incheon INCHEON: The torch that will be used to light the main cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2014 Asian Games arrived here on September 17. After a 36-day torch relay throughout South Korea, the flame will travel around Incheon’s downtown and arrive at the main stadium in Incheon for the Friday’s opening ceremony, reports Xinhua. The torch was first lit Aug 9 in New Delhi at the National Stadium, the first hosts of Asian Games in 1951, to show the torch’s history and legitimacy. It was then combined with another flame that was set alight from Manisan, Ganghwa-do. It has travelled through 70 cities and towns across the host country and is about to complete its long journey. The torch, embodying the Asian continent’s hope for peace and harmony, was designed after a crane, the official bird of the hosting city of

Incheon. All 45 member NOCs of the Olympic Council of Asia will participate in the 16-day event, vying for 439 gold medals in 36 sports. The torch relay started on August 9 with a colorful ceremony in Delhi. The Incheon Asian Games organising committee flew the flame in a specially designed container to Weihei in China, which had hosted the 2010 Asian Games in the city of Guangzhou. From Weihei it was ferried across to Incheon. In parallel, another torch was lit at Mount Mani at Ganghwa Island, off Incheon’s coast. It was the first time that the torch relay started from the National Stadium. In the past the torch was generally lit at the host country but from now on the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) will be continuing with this tradition for all the Asian Games. — IANS

from Nagpur. In 2012, the constitution was amended to facilitate an incumbent from a different zone to become the president if his name was proposed and seconded by the zone, whose turn it is to elect the Board president.

BANGALORE: A sleepless night following rain-induced suspension of play and overnight change of schedules seemed to have done little to dampen Filip Krajinovic who won the decisive fifth rubber to help Serbia beat India 32 in their Davis Cup World Group playoff here on September 15 afternoon. The match was halted on September 14 following rains with Krajinovic leading 6-3, 4-4. With the match scheduled to resume next day, it forced cancellation of air tickets and attendant alterations in the plans of teams and players besides support staff and match officials. “I couldn’t sleep last night as I kept replaying the points. The pressure was very much there and it wasn’t easy, but my plan was to win the second set rather than it being 1-1. So, I did well to break him first thing today,” said the 22-year old Krajinovic after his 6-3, 64, 6-4, win against Yuki Bhambri in the

second reverse singles that helped Serbia win the tie 3-2. “For the first time, I was playing a major match and I am proud that I won and also helped the team win the tie. “I knew, it will be easier for me to break him early today, because if Yuki had won the second set, it would have been 1-1, and the match could have gone the other way. I started aggressive today and broke him in the very first game (the ninth of the set). “It was tough to come out and play today. Different time, different environment and you never know what will happen,” said Krajinovic referring to the noon start and the near-empty stadium in which the match was played on September 15. The Serb, ranked 107, dwelt on his off-court relationship with Bhambri, saying they have known each other since their junior days and training together at the Nick Bollitteri academy in Florida, U.S.

USA win Basketball World Cup IANS, MADRID

T

he USA retained their title as world basketball champions on September 14 with a crushing 129-92 win over Serbia in the final held in Madrid’s Palacio de Deportes, Xinhua reported. The Americans may have ended eight points short of the world record score of 137 in the 1994 World Championship final and the Serbs can also be proud of a display which could possibly have given them the title against any other team in the world, but nobody can question the merit of the win. Many have said this American side is not as good as other ‘Dream Teams’ of recent years and the USA came to Spain missing some star names such as Kevin Durant, but the fact is they have rarely looked in any trouble en-route to their title, winning all nine of the games they have played over the past fortnight and with almost insulting margins of victory in the knockout stages.

USA players lift the trophy after winning the World Cup. (Photo: IANS)

Before the final, the Americans had beaten Mexico 86-63 in the last 16, Slovenia 119-76 in the quarter finals and Lithuania 96-68 in the last four and some of those wins would have been bigger had they not been saving their strength for what lay ahead. They held nothing back against the Serbs, however, although it must also be said that in no moment,

even with the game in the bag did U.S. team show anything less than the utmost respect to their rivals. It’s hard to highlight one player among the Americans’ performance, but point guard Kyrie Irving’ s 26 points included six three point throws from six attempts to be named MVP of the final, while James Harding’ s 25 points were also decisive.

f you cannot resist overeating despite the obvious health risks, you may well be suffering from an eating addiction which, as a study shows, is a behavioral disorder and could be categorized alongside conditions such as gambling. The psychological compulsion to eat is driven by the positive feelings that the brain associates with eating, but it is not as bad as drug addiction.

“The brain does not respond to nutrients in the same way as it does to addictive drugs such as heroin or cocaine,” the researchers said. People can become addicted to eating for its own sake, not to consume specific foods such as those high in sugar or fat. “So the focus on tackling the problem of obesity should be moved from food itself and towards the individual’s relation-

ing,” the researchers said. “More avenues for treatment may open up if we think about this condition as a behavioral addiction rather than a substance-based addiction,” said John Menzies from the University of Edinburgh

For the study, the researchers examined the scientific evidence for food addiction as a substancebased addiction. “There has been a major debate over whether sugar is addictive,” said professor Suzanne Dickson from the University of Gothen-

“There is currently very little evidence to support the idea that any ingredient, food item, additive or combination of ingredients has addictive properties,” Dickson added. The study appeared in Neuroscience and Biobehavioral Reviews.

Positive message Start early to curb violent children A taste of Italy up in Shimla hills to stop smoking IANS, NEW YORK NEW YORK: To dissuade smokers in a better way, the message on cigarette packets should be changed from “Warning: cigarettes cause cancer” to “Warning: Quitting smoking reduces the risk of cancer”, researchers say. According to them, “gain-framed” messages — those that stressed the benefits to quitting, such as “quitting smoking reduces the risk of death due to tobacco” — were more effective for smokers who thought they could quit when they wanted to. On the other hand, “loss-framed”

The next step is to begin early intervention to stop them from turning into violent criminals or psychologically-troubled adults. “We can prevent serious violence and psycho-pathology among the group of children who are at the highest risk,” said Kenneth Dodge from the Duke University. Beginning in 1991, researchers screened nearly 10,000 five-year-old children for aggressive behavior problems, identifying those who were at highest risk of growing up to become violent adults. Nearly 900 children were deemed high risk.

Most of the warnings used now on tobacco packages worldwide are “loss-framed” messages which may not be sufficiently convincing to many smokers. “The study shows that leveraging both gain- and loss-framed messaging may prompt more smokers to quit,” said Darren Mays, a scientist from from Georgetown University.

Daily meditation may reduce migraine pain IANS, NEW YORK

The disease has been linked to dysfunction of the amygdala, a brain structure involved in processing emotions IANS, WASHINGTON

I

n a ray of hope for people suffering from autism, researchers have discovered neuron populations in a region of the mouse brain that controls whether the animal engages in social behavior or asocial repetitive self-grooming behavior. Autism has also been linked to dysfunction of the amygdala, a brain structure involved in processing emotions. Humans with autism often show a reduced frequency of social interactions and an increased tendency to engage in repetitive solitary behavior. Lead researcher David J. Anderson, a Biology professor at the California Institute of Technology and his colleagues discovered two intermingled but distinct pop-

ulation of neurons in the amygdala. One “social neurons” population promotes social behavior such as mating, fighting or social grooming while the other “selfgrooming neurons” population controls repetitive self-grooming an asocial behavior. To study the relationship between these two cell types and their associated behavior, researchers used

a technique called optokinetic. Anderson’s team was able to selectively switch on the neurons associated with social behavior and those linked with asocial behavior. “Surprisingly, these two groups of neurons appear to interfere with each other’s function: the activation of ‘social neurons’ inhibits self-grooming behavior while the activation of ‘self-grooming neurons’ inhibits social behavior,” Anderson noted. In autism, there is a decrease in social interactions and there is often an increase in repetitive, sometimes asocial or self-oriented behavior — a phenomenon known as perseveration. “By stimulating a particular set of neurons, we are both inhibiting social interactions and promoting these persistent behaviors,” Anderson said.

F

or those suffering from migraine attacks, daily meditation might be a good idea for instant relief. During a small study, researchers assessed the safety, feasibility and effects of a standardized meditation and yoga intervention called mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in adults with migraines. Nineteen adults were assigned to two groups with 10 receiving the MBSR intervention and nine receiving standard medical care. The participants attend-

ed eight weekly classes to learn MBSR techniques and were instructed to practice 45 minutes on their own at least five additional days per week. “We found that MBSR participants had trends of fewer migraines that were less severe,” said Rebecca Erwin Wells, an assistant professor of neurology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Centre in North Carolina. Secondary effects included headaches that were shorter in duration and less disabling. Participants had increases in mindfulness and self-efficacy —- a sense of personal control over migraine pain. “In addition, there were no adverse events and excellent adherence,” Wells said.

Eat chikoo to fight cancer KOLKATA: The sweet and succulent chikoo or Sapota fruit, a popular ingredient for desserts, could well be the answer to halt cancer from spreading, according to a study by Indian scientists. Researchers have now shown methanolic (alcoholic) extracts of the whole fruit possess certain active phytochemicals (plant-derived compounds) that can trigger a sequence of orchestrated events in tumor cells leading to their death (a process called apoptosis). “Our results indicate that inclusion of Sapota fruit in our daily diet may protect from genesis

and progression of cancer,” Sathees C. Raghavan, associate professor at the department of Biochemistry, IISc, told IANS in an email interaction. The collaborative study was conducted by scientists at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore. It was published in August in Nature Publishing Group’s journal Scientific Reports. One million new cancer cases are reported in India every year and the figure is set to double in 20 years.
