Suspension of arms treaty big mistake: Joe Biden

President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin made a “big mistake” by suspending his country’s participation in the the last remaining US-Russia nuclear arms control treaty. The US President was in Poland to reassure eastern flank Nato allies that the US will remain by their sides amid the grinding Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In his first comments since Putin’s announcement on Tuesday, Biden condemned the Russian decision to pull back from the treaty, known as New START. The move is expected to have an immediate impact on US visibility into Russian nuclear activities, but the pact was already on life support following Moscow’s cancellation late last year of talks that had been intended to salvage an agreement that both sides have accused the other of violating. “It’s a big mistake,” Biden said.

The President’s comments came as he wrapped up a whirlwind, four-day visit to Poland and Ukraine with talks with leaders from the Bucharest Nine, a collection of nations in the most eastern parts of the Nato alliance that came together in response to Putin’s2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

A TV reporter and a nine-yearold girl have been fatally shot outside Orlando, Florida, near the scene of a murder that took place hours earlier.

A second reporter and the girl’s mother were also shot and injured by the same gunman, who police say is suspected of the homicide earlier on Wednesday. The two Spectrum News 13 journalists were covering the killing of a woman in the area that morning when the suspect returned, police say. It is unclear if they were targeted.

The suspect was armed when he was arrested and was not co-operating with police, said investigators. None of the three people killed in Wednesday’s two attacks in Pine Hills, a suburb west of Orlando, have yet been identified. In a news conference, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said the film crew were “in or near their vehicle”, which he said did not look like a TV station’s official vehicle, when they were attacked at around 16:00 local time (22:00 GMT).

Winter storm: North America hit by blizzards and heat wave

Rapper Nipsey Hussle’s killer Eric R Holder Jr gets 60 years in prison

Los Angeles, Feb 23 (IANS) More than 65 million people across 29 US states are under winter weather alerts that include warnings of severe icing and extreme coldness.

A massive winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and a torrent of rain to most of the northern US this week, with “extreme impacts” felt across a wide swath of the country, CBS News reported on Wednesday.

The upper-level pattern will intensify in the coming days as millions of Americans, from the Pacific Northwest to the Northeast, brace for oncoming snow, frozen rain, strong winds and potential flash flooding.

Five dead and no survivors as Arkansas plane crashes

Five people are dead after a small plane crashed following take-off from an airport in the US state of Arkansas, officials say. Authorities said no-one survived the crash near the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock.

The non-commercial flight, a twinengine Beech BE20, was bound for Columbus, Ohio.

All those on board, including the pilot, were employees of CTEH, a Little Rock-based consultancy, said the firm. “We are incredibly saddened to report the loss of our Little Rock colleagues,” said Paul Nony, senior vice-president of CTEH, in a statement to media.

A fierce winter storm has caused widespread disruptions in the US, while south-eastern parts of the country brace for record-high temperatures.

As of Wednesday, about 75 million people in 28 states have been placed

under winter weather alerts. Blizzards in the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin have forced many schools and businesses to close. Meanwhile, high temperatures in Washington DC are expected to break a nearly 150-year-old record. It means some parts of the US will be 100F (38C) warmer than others at the same time. Powerful wind gusts potentially reaching 50mph (80km/h) and a wind chill as low as -50F in some parts are predicted. In northern states, forecasts of up to 2ft (60cm) of snow in some parts could mean areas endure their biggest snowfalls for 30 years.

Donald Trump says officials ‘indifferent’ after Ohio train derailment

The man convicted of killing rapper Nipsey Hussle has been sentenced to at least 60 years in prison.

Eric R. Holder, Jr. was found guilty of first-degree murder last July for killing Hussle - whose real name is Ermias Asghedom - outside Hussle’s South Los Angeles clothing store in 2019. Hussle, a Grammy-nominated artist, died aged 33. Two bystanders were also hit and injured in the incident.

Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke announced Holder’s 60 years to life sentence on Wednesday after hearing from one of Hussle’s friends as well as reading a letter from Holder’s father.

Holder was found guilty of murder as well as two counts of attempted voluntary manslaughter for the two bystanders injured in the shooting after a months-long trial.

Former US President Donald Trump has accused federal officials of “indifference” to an Ohio town that is reeling from a toxic train derailment.

On a visit to East Palestine, Mr Trump claimed his presence had spurred the Biden administration to devote more resources to this month’s crash.

Local residents have expressed frustration at what they saw as a lack of answers from officials.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is expected to visit on Thursday.

Mr Trump met East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway during Wednesday’s visit. He was joined by his son, Donald Trump Jr, Ohio Republican Senator JD Vance and congressman Bill Johnson. The former president donated Trumpbranded water bottles and cleaning supplies. Speaking at an event at a local fire station, Mr Trump criticised the federal government’s “betrayal” of the town.“We’re standing in America… your goodness and perseverance are met with indifference and betrayal in some cases,” he said.

He was not eligible for the death penalty and was widely expected to receive a life sentence. Wearing orange jail attire, he did not react when his sentence was read out. Holder’s attorney told ABC News he planned to appeal the verdict.

“It was always going to be tough given the high-profile circumstances surrounding the case,” the attorney, Aaron Jansen, said. Prosecutors said during the murder trial that the attack was premeditated, while Holder’s defence team argued it was a heat-of-the-moment decision.

Holder’s defence attorney said he was provoked by a conversation he had with Hussle about rumours that he was cooperating with police.

Russia reinforces China ties

We stand up for BBC: UK govt in Parliament after India’s I-T survey

A junior minister responded to an urgent question raised in House of Commons to say that the government cannot comment on allegations made by I-T dept over an ‘ongoing investigation’

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia met Wang Yi, China’s top foreign policy official, at the Kremlin on Wednesday, working to keep China in Russia’s corner amid a flurry of diplomacy across Europe by Beijing.

Putin told Wang that he was looking forward to welcoming “my friend” Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, to Russia soon, but indicated that the meeting had yet to be confirmed.

Wang responded that deepening the relationship with Russia remained a priority for China.

“Our relations have never been directed against third countries,” Wang told Putin, according to a Russian translation of his remarks. “Our relations have withstood pressure from the international community and are developing very stably.”Putin is looking to shore up alliances as the Ukraine war approaches its first anniversary and the early stages of Russia’s new offensive to swallow up territory appear to be sputtering.

China approves $700m loan to Pakistan

The British government has strongly defended the BBC and its editorial freedom in Parliament after the IncomeTax department’s survey operations on the UK-headquartered media corporation’s New Delhi and Mumbai offices over three days last week. A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) junior minister responded to an urgent question raised in the House of Commons on Tuesday to say that the government cannot comment on the allegations made by the I-T department over an “ongoing investigation” but stressed that media freedom and freedom of speech are essential elements of “robust democracies”. David Rutley, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of the FCDO, pointed to a “broad and deep relationship” with India which meant the UK

was able to discuss a wide range of issues in a “constructive manner”.

“We stand up for the BBC. We fund the BBC. We think the BBC World Service is vital. We want the BBC to have that editorial freedom,” said Rutley. “It criticises us (government), it criticises the (Opposition) Labour party, and it has that freedom that we believe is so important. That freedom is key, and we want to be able to communicate its importance to our friends across the world, including the government in India,” he said. Updating the Commons on the issue, the minister said India’s I-T department conducted what has been described as a survey on the BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai, beginning on February 14 and finishing after three days, on February 16.

Eleven Palestinians killed during Israeli raid in Nablus

Pakistan’s all-weather ally China has approved a loan of $700 million and the funds will be transferred to the central bank this week, finance minister Ishaq Dar announced on Wednesday as the cash-strapped country tried to avert a financial crisis. The announcement by Dar on the loan by the Board of China Development Bank (CDB) came a day after Pakistan’s National Assembly unanimously passed a money bill aimed at raising tax revenues to fulfil the demands set by the IMF for seeking a $1.1 billion loan facility to avoid an economic meltdown.

Britain faces shortage of tomatoes

Britain is facing a shortage of tomatoes after supplies to supermarkets including market leader Tesco and No. 2 Sainsbury’s were hit by disrupted harvests in southern Europe and North Africa. Grocers said the situation was exacerbated by less winter production in greenhouses in the UK and the Netherlands because of high energy costs.

Israeli troops have killed at least 11 Palestinians and wounded dozens more during a raid in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian health officials say. Explosions and gunfire sounded as troops entered the old city of Nablus on Wednesday morning, sparking armed clashes with Palestinian gunmen. The Israeli military said it killed three wanted militants holed up inside a house who refused to surrender.

Several of those killed outside were civilians, including two elderly men. The Palestinian health ministry said 72-year-old Adnan Saabe Baara was one of them. Video footage purportedly showed his body in a street next to bags of bread, in what is usually a busy market area. A 61-year-old man, Abdul Hadi Ashqar, and a 16-year-old boy, Mohammad Shaaban, were also shot dead, the ministry said.

Ex-ISIS loses appeal to regain citizenship

A Bangladeshi-origin British woman, who fled the UK as a 15-yearold schoolgirl to join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist network, on Wednesday lost a legal bid before a specialist tribunal to regain her British citizenship and return to the country. Now aged 23, London-born Shamima Begum had challenged then Home Secretary Sajid Javid’s decision to revoke her British citizenship on national security grounds in 2019 at the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC).

Justice Jay found that there was “credible suspicion” Begum was a victim of trafficking to Syria.

New Delhi: The Hindenburg report may be the “best thing” that ever happened to billionaire Gautam Adani, as it could bring financial discipline to the conglomerate, economist Swaminathan S Anklesaria Aiyar has said.

In a column published in The Economic Times, Mr Aiyar argues that the Adani Group, pummeled by a stock rout after US short-seller Hindenburg Research’s report, will benefit by slowing the “breakneck speed” at which it has been expanding and diversifying.

“I think the Hindenburg report may be the best thing that ever happened to Adani. It will slow his speed of expansion and diversification and force his financiers to be diligent and cautious in future. This could impose highly desirable financial discipline on Adani, to his own benefit,” he writes.

“Hindenburg may have been a blessing in disguise - or, in Winston Churchill’s words in response to his wife trying to cheer him up after his post-war electoral defeat, a blessing ‘quite effectively disguised’.”

“One day I might actually buy Adani shares,” he says, adding that he did not own any Adani company shares because of “high prices and high risk”.

Seven listed companies of the Adani Group have lost some $125 billion in market value after the Hindenburg report alleged improper use of tax havens and stock manipulation by the apples-to-airports conglomerate.

The couple wanted to give the locals a taste of Indian culture but overtime, the event went on to become a wonderful fusion of Indian and Brazilian culture. India and China on Wednesday held the 26th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing during which the two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control and discussed proposals for disengagement from the remaining areas in eastern Ladakh.

This was the first WMCC meeting to be held in person since the 14th meeting held in July 2019, a statement from India’s foreign ministry said. The statement, however, remained silent on the restoration of the status quo as it was before the Chinese intrusions in eastern Ladakh in May 2020. Military veterans have for months questioned India’s continued silence on the restoration of status quo. They have accused the Narendra Modi government of ceding further territory by agreeing to the creation of demilitarised “buffer zones” within India-claimed lines as part of the disengagement process with the Chinese.

The Congress on Thursday claimed its leader Pawan Khera was deplaned from a flight to Raipur, where he was going to attend the party’s plenary session. Several party leaders got off the plane after Khera was deboarded and staged a dharna on the tarmac. As drama escalated at terminal one of the domestic airport here, flight staff told Congress leaders there was confusion with Khera’s bags.

Indian-American charged for spreading false rumours about public firms

New York, Feb 23 (IANS) The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US has charged Indian-American Milan Vinod Patel for spreading more than 100 false rumours about public companies to generate over $1 million in illicit trading profits.

Patel received rumours that he knew to be false from his accomplices about purported market-moving events, such as corporate mergers or acquisitions, involving publicly-traded companies, the SEC said in its complaint.

He then spread the rumours to his contacts at financial news services, chat rooms, and message boards.

“Today we charged Milan Vinod Patel for his central role in a multi-million dollar scheme to spread and trade on more than 100 false rumours about public companies,” the SEC tweeted.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US has charged Indian-American Milan Vinod Patel for spreading more than 100 false rumours about public companies to generate over $1 million in illicit trading profits.

Patel also disseminated the rumours to Mark Melnick, a host of a stock trading webcast, who shared them with his webcast subscribers.

The circulation of more than 100 rumours between December 2017 and January 2020 caused the prices of the subject companies’ securities to rise temporarily.

This allowed Patel to sell his holdings in such securities and generate more than $1 million in illicit trading profits.

The US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, charged Patel with violating Section 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933 and Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Rule 10b-5 thereunder.

The SEC had previously charged Barton Ross, Mark Melnick, Anthony Salandra, and Charles Parrino for their roles in this scheme.

Canada welcomes record 226,450 Indian students in 2022

Washington: (IANS) The US said that it had issued 36 per cent more visas to Indians so far this year than in preCovid-19 pandemic times because of “number one priority” being accorded to cutting of wait-time that has included unprecedented steps such as remote processing of applications from India, sometimes all the way in Washington D.C.

The longest wait-time, typically for first-time visitors, is down from over 1,000 days to about 580, as a result of such measures that also include interview waiver for repeat visitors, additional staffing at consular operations in Indian missions and “Super Saturdays” when mission staff just process visas all day.

Indians are also being encouraged to apply for visas at US missions in other countries, the officials said, who acknowledged this was far from an ideal situation.

More than 100 US missions around the world have processed Indian applications.

The Tamil Nadu government credited its revamped Electric Vehicles Policy for the Rs. 7,614 crore investment.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Chennai: Electric vehicle maker Ola Electric will set up what it says will be the world’s largest electric vehicle hub in Tamil Nadu. Five other states - Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh - were in the race but the investment went in favour of Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu government credited its revamped Electric Vehicles Policy for the ₹ 7,614 crore investment to manufacture electric cars in Krishnagiri district where it already manufactures electric two-wheelers. State Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu described the big-ticket

investment as a reflection of the industry’s confidence in Tamil Nadu. He explained the state offered the electric vehicle maker the choice of capital or turnover subsidy besides

The family approached the Dabeerpura police who registered a ‘zero FIR’ and transferred the case to Mailardevpally. The police are investigating.

According to officials, this is the latest offering from the TSRTC, which recently introduced new super luxury, non-AC sleeper and seater-cum-sleeper buses.

Like non-AC sleeper, the AC sleeper buses have been named Lahari. With a length of 12 metres, the AC sleeper bus has 15 lower and 15 upper berths. Provision has been made to keep water bottle beside the berth. Mobile charging facility has also been provided near the berth.

land subsidy and electricity benefits. Along with the original equipment manufacturers, the state also offered amenities to battery manufacturers and to users to create an ecosystem.

For instance, the users of these public electric vehicles will get a subsidy of ₹ 10 lakh.

“Tamil Nadu’s electric vehicles policy has been revamped to suit the latest requirement. This became more lucrative to investors,” Thangam Thennarasu told NDTV.

The Tamil Nadu government recently unveiled its electric vehicle policy 2023 which aims to garner investments to the tune of ₹ 50,000 crore and generate 1.50 lakh jobs, in a boost to the EV industry.

The automaker would manufacture a lakh and a half cars every year and create a little more than 3,000 jobs. “We expect the roll out towards the end of this year or early next year.

We are so happy about this.

There are similar investments in the pipeline and other investors, including Samsung, have chosen Tamil Nadu for their expansion,” Mr Thennarasu said.

Hyderabad real estate most affordable among metros in country

Anarock compared the average property prices in Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru. It found that the average property price in Hyderabad is Rs 4,620 per sq ft, which is significantly lower than the average property prices in other cities.

Hyderabad: Despite a steady rise in property prices, driven by factors such as the growing demand for housing, the city’s strong economic growth, and all-round infrastructure development, Hyderabad remains an affordable city to buy property, when compared to six other top metros in the country.

A recent report by property consultant

The real estate market in Hyderabad has been growing at a steady pace, with a surge in demand for residential and commercial properties. The State government’s efforts to develop infrastructure and improve connectivity have played a significant role in boosting the real estate sector and the city is also home to several major IT companies, which attract a large number of working professionals.

He further stated that TB RB LLC has been already utilising its entitled prorata share from Tungabhadra Dam and additionally using Tungabhadra river water for the same ayacut from unauthorised Guru Raghavendra Lift Irrigation Schemes jeopardising Telangana interests at Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme(RDS) , Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects. He brought to the notice of the board that diversion of water by AP was in total contravention of the KWDT-I and KWDT-II Awards which do not allow water to be diverted beyond the basin.

KTR calls for timebound dispute redressal

Hyderabad: With the world looking at the China-plus-1 strategy or India for the rest kind of strategy, Industries Minister KT Rama Rao stressed on the need for introducing long-lasting reforms and ensuring dispute redressal in a time-bound manner.

The Minister said with Telangana being ranked top in terms of Ease of Doing Business, the State government was now focusing on improving the quality of doing business and reducing the cost of doing business. Reduction of cost and time and earning goodwill, this was all part of industrial relations. The Telangana government was more focused on ensuring that there were more satisfied customers with early dispute redressal, he said.

In an interview with ANI, S Jaishankar talked about his journey from foreign service to politics and said he had always aspired to be the best officer and get elevated to the post of Foreign Secretary.

New Delhi: Noting that he belongs to a family of bureaucrats and that the political opportunity as a union minister came as a bolt from the blue in 2019, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today said that his father Dr K Subrahmanyam was removed as Secretary, Defence Production, by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi soon after she came back to power in 1980 and he was superseded during the Rajiv Gandhi period with someone junior to him becoming the Cabinet Secretary.

In an interview with ANI, Mr Jaishankar talked about his journey from foreign service to politics and said he had always aspired to be the best officer and get elevated to the post of Foreign Secretary.

Mr Jaishankar was Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018 and earlier served in key ambassadorial positions including in China and the United States. His father K Subrahmanyam, who passed away in 2011, is regarded as one of India’s most prominent national security strategists. “I wanted to be the best foreign service officer. And to my mind, the definition

of the best that you could do was to end up as a foreign secretary. In our household, there was also, I won’t call it pressure, but we were all conscious of the fact that my father, who was a bureaucrat, had become a Secretary but he was removed from his secretaryship. He became, at that time, probably the youngest Secretary in the Janata government in 1979,” he said.

“In 1980, he was Secretary, Defence Production. In 1980 when Indira Gandhi was re-elected, he was the first Secretary that she removed. And he was the most knowledgeable person everybody would say on defence,” he

added.

Mr Jaishankar said his father was also a very upright person, “may be that caused the problem, I don’t know”. “But the fact was that as a person he saw his own career in bureaucracy, actually kind of stalled. And after that, he never became a Secretary again. He was superseded during the Rajiv Gandhi period for somebody junior to him who became a cabinet secretary. It was something he felt...we rarely spoke about it. So he was very, very proud when my elder brother became secretary,” said Dr Jaishankar. He said he became a Secretary to the

“He passed away in 2011, at that time, I had got what you would call Grade 1 which is like a secretary ....like an ambassador. I did not become secretary, I became that after he passed away. For us, at that time the goal was to become secretary. As I said I had achieved that goal. In 2018, I was kind of very happy to walk away into the sunset...but, I ended up walking not into the sunset but into Tata Sons! I was contributing my fair bit there. I liked them, I think they liked me. Then completely as a bolt out of the blue, the political opportunity came. Now the political opportunity for me was something I needed to think about because I was simply not prepared for it....So I did reflect on it briefly...,” said Mr Jaishankar when he was asked about his journey from a bureaucrat to a cabinet minister.

Reflecting on the phone call from the Prime Minister inviting him to be part of the 2019 Narendra Modi-led cabinet, Mr Jaishankar said that it did come as a surprise. “It had not crossed my mind, I don’t think it had crossed the mind of anybody else in my circle,” he said referring to his induction in the union cabinet.

Gautam Adani’s Brother Behind Undisclosed Pledging of Adani Shares to Russian Bank for Loan: Forbes

New Delhi: The elusive low-profile elder brother of Indian tycoon Gautam Adani had a central role in expanding Adani Group firms, with an alleged web of companies in various offshore territories that have apparently not been disclosed to regulatory authorities, Forbes magazine reported on Friday.

Vinod Shantilal Adani had been named as one of the main actors operating behind the scenes in the report published by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Research, which accused the Adani Group of widespread accounting fraud and stock manipulation. Since the report’s publication on January 24, Adani Group’s listed firms have lost $120 billion in market value.

In the Hindenburg report, the 60-yearold businessman was described as being behind a “vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities” that had “collectively moved billions of dollars into Adani publicly listed and private entities, often without required disclosure of the related party nature of the deals”.

In a detailed reply to Hindenburg, the Adani group had dismissed all allegations and stated that, complying with all local laws, it had made the necessary regulatory disclosures. The Adani Group had also asserted that Vinod Adani did “not hold any managerial position in any Adani listed entities or their subsidiaries and has no role in their day to day affairs”.

In the article published on February

Vinod Shantilal Adani had been named as one of the main actors operating behind the scenes in the report published by US-based shortseller Hindenburg Research.

17, Forbes wrote about a previously undisclosed role of Singapore-based Pinnacle Trade and Investment Pte. Lte, which was “indirectly controlled” by Vinod Adani in allegedly pledging Adani Group promoter stocks for a loan from Russia’s VTB bank.

Forbes claims that Pinnacle had entered into a loan arrangement with Russia’s second-largest VTB bank in 2020. “By April 2021, Pinnacle had borrowed $263 million and lent out $258 million to an unnamed related party,” said the report.

As per Singaporean filings, Pinnacle offered two investment funds as guarantors for the loan from the Russian

state-owned bank. These investment funds were identified as Afro Asia Trade and Investments Limited and Worldwide Emerging Market Holding Limited.

The Forbes articles linked two Indian stock exchange filings in June 2020 and August 2022, showing that Vinod Adani is the “ultimate beneficial owner of Mauritius-based Acropolis Trade and Investments Limited, which in turn owns 100% of Worldwide Emerging Market Holding Limited”. The article claimed that Afro Asia Trade and Worldwide hold $4 billion worth of promoter stock in Adani Enterprises, Adani Transmission, Adani Ports and Adani Power. Forbes also noted that as per the investment tracking website Trendlyne, Afro Asia Trade and Worldwide do not hold any other securities.

According to the Forbes report, this meant that Pinnacle’s loan from the Russian bank was “secured, effectively, by the value of the funds’ Adani company shares”. “Neither fund has disclosed share pledges in Indian financial filings for the four Adani companies they’re invested in,” it said.

Forbes wrote that neither the Adani Group nor Vinod Adani responded to a request for comment.

Incidentally, an Indian securities expert who spoke with Forbes, but did not want to be named, was quoted as saying that Pinnacle pledging the investment

funds, rather than their Adani company shares, may exempt the funds from the obligation to disclose the pledged shares. In another report related to Adani stock being used as collateral, Bloomberg news agency wrote that the Norwegian pension fund KLP’s decision to divest all its shares from Adani Green was due to the firm’s stock being pledged for a credit facility to finance the Carmichael coal mine in Australia.

The news agency referred to a public filing dated February 10 which noted that Adani was pledged stock from Adani Green to SBICAP Trustee Company, a unit of State Bank of India, as collateral for a credit facility to develop the Carmichael coal mining project in Australia. The stocks of Adani Green, along with those of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) and Adani Transmission Ltd, were pledged were avail a $300 million letter of credit provided by SBI.

In an interview with Bloomberg, KLP’s head of responsible investing, Kiran Aziz, said that KLP had blacklisted coal from its portfolio, so any indirect financing of the Carmichael project would represent a “breach of our commitments”.

In June 2021, KLP divested all its from Adani Ports and SEZ Limited over its links to Myanmar’s military for a project to develop a container terminal in Yangon. Four months later, Adani announced that it was withdrawing from the container terminal project.

Customs and Border Protection Expands. 321 Data Pilot Participation

shipments are entered under de minimis procedures which allow small packages valued at $800 or less to enter the United States tax and duty-free.

WASHINGTON, DC— U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) published today a Federal Register Notice soliciting additional participants for the Section 321 Data Pilot, which allows the agency to partner with private sector supply chain actors to identify and target high-risk shipments for inspection while expediting clearance of legitimate trade flows.

The Section 321 Data Pilot is a publicprivate partnership that mitigates risk and expedites legitimate low value e-commerce shipments. These

Expanding participation in the Section 321 Data Pilot benefits both government and industry by increasing the amount of advanced data CBP can use to identify, disrupt, and deter illegal practices like counterfeit goods that threaten legitimate businesses, while creating additional opportunities to leverage and explore new technology to facilitate legal trade flows.

So far, the pilot has resulted in faster and more accurate risk assessment and adjudication for CBP and fewer CBP holds. By increasing pilot participation, the agency expects these benefits will increase as well. CBP estimates that 85% of all shipments entering the United States are small packages valued at less than $800.

Encouraging Indian Students To Create Innovations For The World: Dassault Systemes

US: As India witnesses a surge in new startups across industries where young entrepreneurs are taking the risk of building something useful for the society, Suchit Jain, VP of Strategy and Business Development at Dassault Systemes, has stressed that the goal is to motivate students and youth in the country to create the next big innovations for the world.

Jain, who holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from IIT-Bombay and a master’s degree in structural mechanics from the University of Southern California, told IANS that they have been working with startups from the very beginning, when “we started 25 years ago”.

“We invested a lot in this education and we continued to do so because it forms a virtuous cycle where the students would come out and be motivated to create the next innovations of the world, “ he said on the sidelines of the a3D Experience World 2023’ here.

He went on to say that this works out well whether they start a startup by themselves or go on to be employed by an entrepreneur.

“Our goal has always been not to just give them free access to software but to put them in a network in various ways for them to succeed in their ventures, “ Jain noted. When asked about empowering youth in India, Jain said they have been

working a lot with students, especially women.

“When I visited India in November 2022, as part of our design competition called ‘Aakruti-Shaping Imagination’ which saw the participation of more than 320 colleges from all over the country, there was a prize for an all-girls team.

“There were several girls from engineering backgrounds who had submitted their designs. The idea here was to motivate them, “ he added.

Jain shared the example of Samriddhi Pandey, Founder and CEO of the Mumbai-based Defy Aerospace that designs, develops and builds a unique drone technology for commercial cargo operations to help the healthcare sector in the country.

“Her story is very interesting. She’s making large-sized drones for the delivery of medical supplies. What is amazing here is that she has made her name in a field which is generally dominated by men, “ he informed.

Jain earlier told IANS that he found out

that a lot of startups and programmes were government funded and private organisations were not ready to put their money in.

“But this is now changing. In the last 3-4 years, hardware startups have been coming up in India. We see a positive outlook for the coming time with this kind of change and with the greater participation of women, “ said the executive. “When I went to my engineering school (IIT-Bombay), we had very few female counterparts, but the scenario now is completely different, “ he added. The startup ecosystem in India is growing fast and in the next few years, “we look forward to more innovations, more entrepreneurs, with even a greater participation of women”. India continues to be the third largest tech startup ecosystem globally (after the US and China). The country also added the second highest number of unicorns in the world, with over 23 added in the CY2022, according to a latest Nasscom-Zinnov report.

DES PLAINES, IL- Community members are invited to attend a staged reading of “Let Me Down Easy,” which examines systemic racism and classism in our healthcare system and explores how Americans view death in contrast to the rest of the world. The play will be presented only twice at Oakton, so mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. or Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m., and buy the tickets before they sell out. “We chose to produce this staged reading of ‘Let Me Down Easy’ to promote a collective discussion on healthcare issues in the U.S. Although this version of the play is just over 10 years old, the Covid-19 pandemic underscored the ongoing inequities in American healthcare, prompting us to revisit the questions posed by this play,” says Mary Ringstad-Gagliano, professor of Speech and Theater and “Let Me Down Easy” director.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), data shows racial and ethnic minority groups in the U.S. experience higher rates of illness and death across a wide range of health conditions, including diabetes, asthma and heart disease, when compared to their white counterparts. These health disparities were also evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, says CDC.

The play is a collection of monologues derived from interviews with real people, including patients, doctors, counselors and clergy — some famous, some not — most of whom have firsthand experience with the American

healthcare system. The playwright, Anna Deavere Smith, developed the play over several years after interviewing over 300 people on three continents. Smith created an indelible gallery of 20 individuals – from a rodeo bull rider and a world heavyweight boxing champion to a New Orleans doctor during Hurricane Katrina. The cast of 20 actors, including five current Oakton students and seven former students, represents 10 cities and towns in the area.

Letter sent to CDCR against Discriminatory Beard Policy

Earlier this month, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) rolled out an updated policy that forces bearded peace officers, including those who previously held religious or medical accommodations, to shave or face disciplinary sanctions.

In response, the Sikh Coalition and the ACLU Foundation of Northern California sent a letter to CDCR detailing “grave concerns” regarding the categorical application of this policy and the disproportionate impact that it has on Black and brown CDCR peace officers – specifically Black officers who are far more likely to suffer from Pseudofolliculitis Barbae (PFB), a medical condition that causes painful skin inflammation and scarring, and Sikhs and other religious minorities who are religiously mandated to keep their facial hair. In the week since the policy went into full effect, both

organizations have received requests for legal help from Black and Sikh individuals working at CDCR facilities across the state who have been negatively impacted by this policy.

“This policy has created enormous fear and confusion for Sikh CDCR peace officers whose previously held religious accommodations are no longer valid. It now seemingly forces them to either comply with the shaving requirement under extreme duress or risk their employment,” said Harsimran Kaur, Sikh Coalition Senior Counsel. “The discriminatory policy change is not only untenable for Sikh peace officers; its effect is enormous because it adversely impacts every peace officer who requires a religious or medical beard accommodation.”

A Michigan endocrinologist was sentenced yesterday to eight months in prison for evading taxes due on income related to his medical practice. According to court documents and statements made in court, Dr. Bashar Kiami of Roscommon owned and operated Northern Michigan Endocrine PLLC, a solo endocrinology practice in Grayling. From 2014 through 2017, Kiami filed corporate returns that underreported the practice’s gross receipts and overstated its expenses. MILWAUKEE, WI—On Valentine’s Day, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers working at an Express Consignment Operations hub seized a shipment containing 72 Amoxicillin 100mg capsules, six vials of Penicillin Powder, eight 8mg vials of Betamethasone, and 200 Diclofenac 100mg tablets-all of which require a doctor’s prescription.

Working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CBP seized the shipment of foreign unapproved medications since the FDA prohibits the introduction or delivery for introduction into interstate commerce, or the adulterated or misbranding of any food, drug, device, tobacco product, or

The conspirators steered individuals who were paid to receive the compound medications to Saurabh’s medical practice for the purpose of receiving his authorisation on the fraudulent prescriptions, a Department of Justice said in a statement. This enabled Saurabh to receive insurance payments for those patient visits and procedures. In addition to the people steered to Saurabh’s medical practice as part of the scheme, Kaival also instructed Saurabh on which insurance companies covered the compound medications. Thereafter, he requested that Saurabh prescribe those medications to existing patients of his practice with those insurance plans in order to further benefit Kaival and his wife. Nikki Haley Uses Brown Skin To Launder White Supremacy: Pak-American Writer

New York: (IANS) A prominent Pakistani-origin writer and public speaker has racially targetted IndianAmerican Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley of using her “brown skin to launder white supremacist talking points”.

“I see her and I feel sad because she uses her brown skin as a weapon against poor black folks and poor brown folks, and she uses her brown skin to launder white supremacist talking points,” Wajahat Ali, who was a guest speaker on MSNBC’s ‘The Mehdi Hasan Show’, said. Haley, 51, the former South Carolina Governor, announced her presidential bid on February 14 in a video message where she proudly talked about her Indian heritage. Born to immigrant parents from India,

she said that as a brown girl, growing up in a black-and-white world, she saw the promise of America unfold before her. Ali, who writes for the Daily Beast and The New York Times, said that Haley’s parents benefited from the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, the New York Post reported.

“Her father came here because he was a professor, he taught at a historically black college in South Carolina. That’s how she became the proud American that she is,” Ali, who has authored ‘Go Back To Where You Came From: And Other Helpful Recommendations on How to Become American’, argued. He further said that Haley is the “perfect Manchurian candidate” for white supremacists and bigots.

Intercepts Shipment Of Prescription Medication

Border Protection officers enforce prescription medication imports,” said LaFonda D. Sutton-Burke, Director, Field Operations-Chicago Field Office. “Counterfeit products that you ingest could seriously hurt you. They are manufactured in unregulated and unsanitary facilities with ingredients that you cannot be sure are authentic.”

cosmetic. The shipment was arriving from Mexico and was heading to a residence in Milwaukee. Prescription medications are regulated by FDA, because unapproved products can contain unknown ingredients that may be ineffective or dangerous.

“Consumer health and safety are our key concerns when Customs and

CBP works in conjunction with FDA to intercept illegal shipments like these from entering the commerce of the United States. Consumers may think they are getting a “great deal” by purchasing medication online from third party sellers, but it is impossible to determine the products’ safety, efficacy, or legitimacy. CBP recommends consumers talk with trained and

licensed medical professionals and receive a prescription for controlled medication.

“Pirated goods, such as prescription medication, threaten our economy and put American consumers at risk,” said Milwaukee Port Director Holly Smith. “Our officers and specialists enforce hundreds of laws for many partner agencies and are committed to ensuring the health and safety of American citizens.”

CBP provides basic import information about admissibility requirements and the clearance process for e-commerce goods and encourages buyers to confirm that their purchases and the importation of those purchases comply with any state and federal import regulations.

EDISON, NJ- An NJ woman kept undocumented women from India and failed to pay them wages. Harsha Sahni from NJ has pleaded guilty for not only harboring two undocumented women from India and failing to pay their wages. Sahni, has agreed to pay the victims a combined $642,212 and has agreed to pay up to $200,000 towards the treatment of one of the victim’s brain aneurysm. She instructed the victims to tell other people that they were related to Sahni,

and Sahni use fake names and addresses in furtherance of the conspiracy. From 2013 to 2019, Sahni also failed to pay certain taxes notwithstanding that the victims were Sahni’s household employees. Sahni has also agreed to pay restitution to the IRS, as part of the plea agreement. Sahni conspired with others to conceal and harbor two foreign nationals from India, who Sahni recruited to work for Sahni and her family in their homes in New Jersey. She caused the victims to believe that they would be arrested and deported if they interacted with law enforcement.

Hindus Are Emphasizing Urgent Need For Hindu Chaplain At Dartmouth College

HANOVER, NH- Hindus are emphasizing the vital need of a Hindu chaplain at prestigious Ivy League research university Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire).

Currently, Dartmouth has a Christian chaplain, a Muslim chaplain and a Christian “multi-faith advisor”.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that in view of substantial number of Hindu students at Dartmouth, a Hindu chaplain was urgently needed to provide spiritual and pastoral care, guidance, counselling, open respectful ear, ethical leadership, help in character formation and find the meaning; coordinate worship services; support them through various life changes;

Spiritual and religious needs of Hindu students are quite unique and

Rajan Zed urged Dartmouth President Philip J. Zed further said that it was time to act instead of just claiming to be “One of the world’s greatest academic institutions” with “Dartmouth embraces diversity” listed under “Core Values”. Woman Robbed At Gunpoint By Man Who Followed Her Home From NJ ATM

The robber is described as a heavy-set man between 30 and 40 years old. He was wearing black pants and a gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt.

SAN JOSE, CA- A statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj which went missing from a public park in San Jose, California last month has been found. According to Mercury News one of its reporters found the statue next to a soda machine in the lobby of Tung Tai Group, a San Jose metal scrapyard north of downtown. Workers at the scrapyard told Mercury News two men and one woman came to the site at 1726 Rogers Ave on Jan 29 to drop off the sculpture, but did not provide a more detailed description of the trio. The statue was first brought to the city in 1999 as a symbol of friendship between San Jose and its sister city of Pune located in western India.

GLASSBORO, NJ- A 26-year-old New Jersey woman was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night by a man who followed her home from an ATM at a nearby bank in Gloucester County, authorities said.

The woman told Washington Township police that she saw a black Dodge Charger in the TD Bank drive-thru line next to her vehicle when she stopped in Glassboro to use the ATM on her way home from work.

When she arrived home in neighboring Washington Township at about 9 p.m., she noticed the same vehicle. Moments later, a man approached her, showed a small black handgun and demanded she hand over her purse

The robber then jumped into the passenger side of the Charger and the driver sped off, police said.

Officers saw the Charger on Route 42 and tried to stop it before calling off the pursuit because it fled “at a high rate of speed,” Washington Township police said.

The robber is described as a heavy-set man between 30 and 40 years old. He was wearing black pants and a gray zipup hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact Washington Township police Det. Robert Durham at 856-589-0330.

“Why don’t you go back to your own country?” Coulter said, making an appearance on the ‘The Mark Simone Show’ podcast this week.

Born Nimrata ‘Nikki’ Randhawa, Haley announced her presidential bid on February 14 in a video message where she proudly talked about her Indian heritage. She had said that as a brown girl, growing up in a black-and-white world, she saw the promise of America unfold before her.

“Her candidacy did remind me that I need to immigrate to India so I can demand they start taking down parts of their history,” Coutler said.

Coutler’s rants did not stop at just Haley, she targetted India as well, the NBC News reported.

“What’s with the worshipping of the cows? They’re all starving over there. Did you know they have a rat temple, where they worship rats?”

Coulter said that Haley’s decision to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s Statehouse following the 2015 mass shooting at a predominantly black church in Charleston, angered her. She slammed Haley, calling her a “Bimbo” and a “preposterous creature” for her decision.”This is my country, lady,” she said.

“I’m not an American Indian, and I don’t like them taking down all the monuments,” NBC News reported Coutler as saying.

Haley, so far, has not responded to Coutler’s comments.

Haley has been a rising star in the Republican party and long expected to run for the White House, IANS reported earlier. She is a former two-term Governor of South Carolina, one of America’s most conservative states, and former Ambassador to the UN, a cabinet-rank position she held in the administration of then President Donald Trump.

Haley is the third Indian American to seek the Week House, following Bobby Jindal in 2015-16 and Kamala Harris in 2019-20.
