Race to evacuate city as blaze approaches
One of the largest cities in Canada's far north is being evacuated amid warnings that a wildfire could reach it by the weekend. The 20,000 residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, have been given until noon Friday (18:00 GMT) to leave. As of late Wednesday, the fire was within 17km (11 miles) of the city. Another fire is threatening the community of Hay River.
Hunter Biden: The struggles and scandals of the US president's son
Hunter Biden, the second son of President Joe Biden, is attracting attention once again.
In July, the 53-year-old looked set to resolve tax and gun charges against him and avoid prison time in a plea agreement with prosecutors. But that deal has since fallen apart, a special counsel now heads a five-year-long federal probe into alleged wrongdoing, and a jury trial appears imminent.
Congressional Republicans are also investigating alleged influence-peddling by the first son, particularly in his foreign business dealings during his father's vice-presidency. Meanwhile, his personal struggles - from alcohol and drug abuse, to relationship strife - have spilled over into politics in recent years.
Biden Aims to Strengthen South Korea, Japan Ties at Camp David
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's recent commemoration of his country's 1945 independence from Japan highlights a significant shift in diplomatic dynamics. Yoon, born after Japan's brutal 35-year occupation, emphasized a partnership with shared values, rather than dwelling on past conflicts. This approach signifies a deeper relationship forming between South Korea and Japan, traditionally marked by distrust. The Biden administration perceives this realignment as a chance to counter China's growing influence and enhance regional security. A forthcoming summit at Camp David aims to solidify this evolving alliance. While formal defense commitments may not arise, both nations seek mutual understanding on regional responsibilities. This development surprises experts, given the historical tensions. Shared concerns about an

Plans for an annual summit and a three-way crisis hotline indicate the commitment to cementing ties. While all parties want to avoid escalating tensions, China perceives diplomatic isolation attempts. North Korea criticizes the growing military ties as a prelude to an "Asian NATO." Texas Woman Wins $1.2B in Lawsuit Against Boyfriend Over Explicit Photos
A Texas woman was awarded $1.2 billion in damages last week after she sued her former boyfriend and accused him of sending intimate images of her to her family, friends and co-workers from fake online accounts.
The woman, who is identified only by the initials D.L. in court documents, sued her former boyfriend, Marques Jamal Jackson, claiming he had psychologically and sexually abused her by distributing socalled revenge porn, a term for sexually explicit photos or videos of someone that are shared without consent.
The couple started dating in 2016 and were living together in Chicago in early 2020 when they began a “long and drawnout break-up”, according to the lawsuit.

D.L. temporarily moved to her mother’s house in Texas and Jackson began accessing the security system there to spy on her, the lawsuit said. In October 2021, the couple officially ended their relationship and D.L. told Jackson that she no longer wanted
him to have access to what the lawsuit described as “visual intimate material” of her that she had allowed him to have while they were a couple. Instead, he posted the images on several social media platforms and websites, including a pornographic website, and in a publicly accessible folder on the online file-sharing service Dropbox, the lawsuit said. He identified her in the material, using her name and address, and images of her face. He created fake social media pages and email accounts to share the material with her family, friends and co-workers, including by sending them a link to the Dropbox folder. On the social media pages where he had posted the images, he tagged accounts for her employer and for her personal gym.

The vessel was first spotted on Monday, police told the AFP news agency. Initial reports suggested the boat had sunk but it was later clarified that it had been found drifting.
The wooden pirogue style boat was seen almost 320km (200 miles) off Sal, a part of Cape Verde, by a Spanish fishing boat, which then alerted authorities, police said. The survivors include four children aged between 12 and 16, a
spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said. The boat left the Senegalese fishing village of Fasse Boye on 10 July with 101 people on board, Senegal's foreign ministry said on Tuesday, citing survivors. Moda Samb, an elected official in the village, told AFP news agency nearly all those on the boat had grown up in the community and that some local families were still waiting to hear whether their relatives were among the survivors.

Italy's public debt hits new record high
Rome: (IANS) The Bank of Italy said the country's public debt set an all-time record of 2.843 trillion euros ($3.09 trillion) in June, reflecting in part an increase in government borrowing. That number rose by 27.8 billion euros compared to the previous month, Xinhua news agency quoted the central bank as saying. The size of Italy's public debt has risen every month this year after declining in the final three months of 2022. Currently, excluding liquid balances of the Italian Treasury such as euros, foreign currencies and other assets, public debt was 2.802 trillion euros -the first time that figure surpassed the 2.8 trillion euros threshold.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasised his Hindu credentials when he attended the Ram Katha led by spiritual leader Morari Bapu at Jesus College, Cambridge.
Rishi’s assertion of his faith comes ahead of his first trip to India as Prime Minister when he will be attending the G20 summit in Delhi next month.
Addressing Morari Bapu with folded hands, Rishi began with, “Jai Siya Ram!” — this is said to be politically less
aggressive than “Jai Shri Ram” as used by the Hindutva movement in India — and said: “It is truly an honour and pleasure to be here today at Morari Bapu’s Ram Katha at the University of Cambridge on Indian Independence Day.” He went on: “Bapu, I am here today not as a Prime Minister but as a Hindu.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that in addition to English, children in the island nation will also have to learn Hindi and Chinese in the future to fit into the changing world. Addressing an event at a school in Colombo on Wednesday, President Wickremesinghe said education in Sri Lanka will have to change drastically to fit into the future. “We will have to introduce new subjects. Country Garden, which is one of China's biggest property developers, has warned that it could see a loss of up to $7.6bn (£6bn) for the first six months of the year. The announcement is the latest sign of the major issues faced by the world's second largest economy. This week official figures showed China had slipped into deflation for the first time
in more than two years. Exports have also fallen sharply, while youth unemployment is at a record high. Shares in Country Garden Holdings were down by more than 5% in Hong Kong trade on Friday afternoon. Country Garden "is expected to record a net loss ranging from approximately RMB45 billion [$6.24bn; £4.9bn] to RMB55 billion for the six months ended 30 June 2023," the company said in an announcement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The expected loss compares to a $265m profit for the same time last year. The firm also said it has set up a special task force, headed by its chairman Yang Huiyan, to find ways to turn the business around.

BJP’s New Chhattisgarh Poll Plan To Label Seats As “A, B, C, D”
New Delhi: (IANS) Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud on Thursday said the Supreme Court is setting up its own cloud software for video conferencing to enable virtual hearings in all lower courts across the country.
During the Constitution Bench hearing on Article 370, senior advocate Dushyant Dave suggested if the technology-driven hybrid hearings could also be extended to the district judiciary.
“If you could carry this (virtual hearing) to the lowest of the courts, including mofussil courts. It would be the greatest contribution,” he said. At this, CJI Chandrachud said: “In Phase-III of eCourts (Project), we have a huge budget, so we are in process of setting up our own cloud software for video conferencing.”
Indian-Origin Scientist Advances Lung Infection Imaging
New Delhi: At a meeting of the BJP’s top election panel on state polls later this year, leaders divided seats in Congressruled Chhattisgarh into categories in a new strategy to invest more resources into seats where the ruling party is weak. The rare election committee meeting held even before the announcement of dates for polls in five states, lasted more than two hours.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP chief JP Nadda and other top leaders reportedly discussed seats in Chhattisgarh and possible candidates, aligning with caste calculations tailored to each seat, sources say. New faces are likely to be put up in half the seats, according to reports. Caste, local issues and the party’s past performance in constituencies are likely to be the parameters for choosing candidates.

New Delhi: The Chandrayaan-3’s lander ‘Vikram’ has successfully separated from spacecraft and is now expected to land on the moon on August 23.
“LM is successfully separated from the Propulsion Module (PM). LM is set to descend to a slightly lower orbit upon a deboosting planned for tomorrow,” ISRO said in a tweet.
After separation, the lander is expected to undergo a “deboost” (the process of slowing down) to place it in an orbit where the Perilune (closest point to the Moon) is 30 kilometres and Apolune (farthest point from the Moon) is 100 km. From this orbit, the soft landing on the south polar region of the Moon will be attempted on August 23, ISRO has said. Once on the Moon, the lander will photograph the Pragyaan rover, which will deploy its instruments to study seismic activity on the lunar surface.

India Effect! Tickets For First Two Ireland T20Is Sold Out
US secretary of state Antony J. Blinken has a crisis on his hands. But unlike the foreign coups, hostage-takings and military threats that the nation’s top diplomat routinely faces, this one comes from within the vast bureaucracy he commands — and may be even more difficult to solve.
enator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia, has called the situation a “crisis”. Senator Rick Scott, Republican of Florida, has said it is “an unacceptable failure”. And Utah’s entire congressional delegation told Blinken in a letter this spring that their offices were “struggling to handle all incoming emergency requests due to the sheer volume” of pleas from their constituents.

US DOJ ordered to release $5 mn to IndianAmerican convicted of fraud: Report
HiIndia NewsdeskNew York: (IANS) The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has been ordered to release nearly $5 million in assets seized from an Indian-American executive of a Chicago-based health technology startup who was convicted in a corporate fraud scheme, a media report said.
Rishi Shah, 37, co-founder and former CEO of Outcome Health, was convicted in April for his role in a $1 billion fraud scheme that targeted the company's clients, lenders, and investors.
A federal judge ruled recently that $4.9 million in investments should not have been frozen because they were made before the crimes occurred, the Chicago Business newspaper reported.
Prosecutors froze about $55 million in total assets, mostly holdings in startups and investment funds, owned by Shah and Shradha Agarwal -- former
Indo-Canadian real-estate mogul appointed to Order of British Columbia
Rishi Shah president of the company who was also convicted, Shah's attorneys argued that $4.9 million of that was incorrectly frozen money that their client wanted to use for legal fees for representation at
sentencing and for an appeal. The government sought to keep the money frozen, arguing that it will be needed to pay restitution that it will ultimately seek. But it hasn’t done so yet, according to the Chicago Business.
“While the Mandatory Victims Restitution Act allows the government to enforce an existing restitution order, it says nothing about a future one,” US District Judge Thomas Durkin wrote.
“The court declines to take that leap.” During the trial, Shah, who owned about 80 per cent of the company's assets, sought to have $10 million of the frozen assets returned to him, which he and Agarwal could use to hire lawyers, but the request was denied.
According to the news report, Shah's attorneys have questioned how the government traced his assets and hinted at the value of improperly frozen assets, which may now be worth more.
“To the extent that Shah believes that the

amount of untainted property presently restrained exceeds $4,856,482.41, the court will require further briefing and proceedings on that issue,” judge Durkin wrote in his ruling. Shah, who was convicted of five counts of mail fraud, 10 counts of wire fraud, two counts of bank fraud, and two counts of money laundering, won't be sentenced until fall.
According to the Justice Department, Outcome Health installed television screens and tablets in doctors' offices around the US and then sold advertising space on those devices to clients, most of whom were pharmaceutical companies. Shah and Agarwal overbilled customers, which inflated Outcome Health’s financials, which were then used to raise $488 million from investors and $435 million from lenders.
About $69 million of that money went to Shah and Agarwal.

New York: (IANS) A Sikh army recruit, who fought a two-year-long legal battle to keep his articles of faith, has graduated from the US Marine Corps recruit training with his turban, beard and unshorn hair, paving way for religious freedom in the American military.
Jaskirat Singh, who was shipped off for boot camp in May, graduated on August 11 after three months of hard training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.
“I am honored to serve my country in the Marine Corps, and proud that I was able to do so while respecting my Sikh faith,” Jaskirat was cited as saying in a Sikh Coalition release.
“I hope that my graduation sends a clear message to other young Sikhs who are considering military service: Your faith does not have to be a barrier to any career,” he said.
"He was a squad leader throughout training," Major Joshua Pena, a spokesman for the Marine Corps Training and Education Command, told Military.com.
"He met all the standards. He's a Marine... We're really excited to see what he does with his career," Major Pena added.
Jaskirat, along with Aekash Singh and Milaap Singh Chahal, had sued the US government in April last year after the Marine Corps offered an accommodation that would require Sikhs to surrender their turbans and
beards while at boot camp. They argued that allowing Sikhs to wear religious beards would disrupt troop uniformity and appearance among the recruits, ultimately threatening national security.
In a historic move last December, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals ultimately granted a preliminary injunction to allow Jaskirat to attend recruit training with his articles of faith. The court cited that the present Corps' boot camp rule of cutting hair and shaving beards as a violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA).
“Singh (Jaskirat) is the latest in a long line of Sikhs to prove that turbans and beards pose no barrier to honorable and capable military service. Now, with a forward-looking policy change, the Marine Corps can ensure that it continues to welcome more capable recruits from all faith backgrounds,”
Amandeep S. Sidhu from Winston & Strawn LLP, said.
"His achievement is yet another testament to the simple fact that no one should be made to choose between any career and their religious beliefs,”
Giselle Klapper, Deputy Legal Director of the Sikh Coalition, said.
Jaskirat's case was represented by the Sikh Coalition, Winston & Strawn, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, and BakerHostetler.
Other branches of the US military -- the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard -- already accommodate the religious requirements of Sikhism.

70 Indians Sue US for denying H-1B Visas

Kalpana Kotagal Sworn in as EEOC Commissioner
About 70 Indian nationals are suing the US government alleging their H-1B visas were denied unjustly. The Indians claim that their visa applications were denied because of fraudulent activities committed by their employers. According to complainants even though they had no direct involvement in their employers’ fraudulent activities, they had to bear the consequences.
A lawsuit has been initiated in the federal district court in the state of Washington. The plaintiffs argue that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wrongly denied them their H-1B visas. Those who are part of this lawsuit were in a training program for foreign graduates from US colleges and universities.
The lawsuit says that the DHS overstepped its authority and violated the Administrative Procedure Act by branding the plaintiffs as inadmissible without proper evidence or due process.
When Indian actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas announced her foray into the world of hospitality and Indian food, there was a lot of buzz amongst the
Indian community. Her restaurant Sona, in partnership with New York based restaurateur Manish Goyal was the talk of the town and the eatery not only became a coveted spot for foodies but also became a major attraction for those who wanted to experiment with Indian food. Along with the eatery, Chopra also launched a line of homeware, linen and dinnerware called Sona Home. However now the eatery would run without Priyanka’s partnership and creative inputs. It is being speculated that Chopra would be part of global hospitality related ventures in the future.

K'taka police arrest model from Mumbai in honey trapping case
Bengaluru: (IANS) Karnataka police have arrested a model from Mumbai in connection with a honey trapping case, police said on Wednesday. The gang extorted huge money by threatening the victims to convert to Islam and get circumcised.
The incident took place in the limits of Puttenahalli police station in Bengaluru. The arrested model is identified as Neha a.k.a Meher and preliminary investigations have revealed that she is the main accused in the case.
Police explain that Neha a.k.a Meher got in touch with gullible persons between the age group of 20 to 50 years in Bengaluru through Telegram. She lured them to have sex at her residence in J.P. Nagar fifth stage. As soon as they entered her home, she would invite them inside wearing a bikini.
The gang captured private moments and later the gang would barge inside the home and take pictures and videos of the victims with the girl. The gang members would snatch the mobile of the victim and note down all the contacts. They would demand that if they are not giving the money they would send their private video and photos to all their contacts.
They would demand the victims to get married to the model. They insisted that to get married to her they should get converted to Islam as she is a Muslim. They would also insist that the victims should get the circumcision done immediately.
The victims would get terrified by these demands and give away hefty money to the accused.

Trump Given Deadline to Surrender in Georgia by August 25
Former President Donald J. Trump has until no later than noon on August 25 to voluntarily surrender to authorities in Fulton County, Fani T. Willis, the district attorney, said on Monday.
The script that officials in Atlanta will follow for his arrest and booking is likely to deviate from the standard operating procedure, just as it did when Trump was arrested on separate charges in New York in April.
In New York, prosecutors contacted a lawyer for Trump on the evening of March 30
“to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan DA’s Office for arraignment”, according to a post on Twitter by the district attorney, Alvin Bragg. The move was unsurprising, as suspects in whitecollar cases are often given a chance to turn themselves in.

Shabana Azmi hoists the Indian flag at IFFM 2023
Intolerance, says Kailash Kher, isn’t an attribute that’s becoming increasingly prevalent in Indian society alone. “Look at what’s happening across the globe anyway. There’s intolerance even in nature. The number of landslides that we see today is unprecedented. As for human beings, we’ve grown increasingly irritable. At a restaurant, if we don’t find something that we like, we’ll immediately run away. It has become part of our lifestyle. If we live on fast foods, isn’t that the kind of energy we will harbour as well? So, this intolerance is not specific to Indian society alone.”
Kher is addressing our questions on the apprehensions that a director like Amit Rai must have harboured while creating OMG 2, given that portrayal of Hindu deities always
ignites strong reactions from certain sections of society. Pleasing each and every individual, he says, “isn’t a feat that even God could accomplish”. “Then how can we?” he asks, making a reference to atheists. Evidently then, he no longer designs his music with the aim of appeasing an audience. What he does attempt to deliver, however, is a balm that can heal individuals struggling to deal with their daily lives. “Ho tayyar is a motivational number, and one that is the need of the hour. When you are sad, or pessimistic, this song can help you become optimistic. It helps you realise that you shouldn’t approach God to only ask for things, you should approach him to express gratitude too. In the film, the protagonist doesn’t find success. When he loses hope, he finds the ability to get motivated again. Today, people are afraid to fail, and lose hope easily. This song is a message to them.”

Hare Krishna Group Revives 5000-YearOld Tradition At Bud Billiken Parade
Indian American Economist Raj Chetty’s Work Wins Harvard Prize
CHICAGO, IL: The Bud Billiken Parade stands as the largest African-American parade in the United States and ranks second only to the Rose Parade in size. Originating as a tribute to AfricanAmerican history, it doubles as an encouragement for the youth as they approach the upcoming school year. The parade’s namesake, the “Billiken,” is an angelic guardian and revered patron of children in Chinese mythology. The parade’s creation can be attributed to Robert S. Abbott, a notable figure acknowledged as the father of black journalism. The most recent edition of this parade marked its 94th year of celebration.
The Bud Billiken Parade transcends being merely a procession of bands and floats traversing King Drive. It embodies a retrospective honoring of our heritage and a forward-looking revelry in what lies ahead. For nearly a century, “The Bud” has joined African-Americans across Chicago in a harmonious blend of music, dance, cuisine, and laughter. This event provides a unique platform for acknowledging our historical origins firmly rooted in the South Side of Chicago.
This year’s parade took place on August 12, 2023, at the intersection of E 35th St & Martin Luther King Jr Drive, Chicago, IL 60653. Crowds congregated to witness
the floats glide down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The parade’s customary route commences in Bronzeville at Oakwood Boulevard and concludes at Garfield Boulevard, 55th Street. Vibrant enthusiasm and youthful spirit filled the air, echoing the intrinsic aspects of black culture: faith, music, and dance, all masterfully showcased on each float. Notably among the entrancing floats, a portrayal of the Hare Krishnas captured attention. The Hare Krishna Temple of the Heart, located in the south suburbs of Chicago, has steadfastly participated in the Bud Billiken Parade for two decades. Gaura-mani Das, a representative, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to partake in the parade, highlighting the importance of invoking the Holy Names of God within various faiths. Their involvement is rooted in
their representation of the 5000-yearold Vedic culture.
Srila Prabhupada’s influential arrival in the West during 1969 bore the purpose of introducing this culture to America. His monumental contributions encompassed translating approximately 80 volumes of Sanskrit texts into English, with notable works like “Bhagavad Gita As It Is” and “Srimad Bhagavatam.” Amidst the festivities, devotees presented a resplendent embodiment of Lord Jagannatha on their float, accompanied by the resonant chanting of the Hare Krishna maha mantra. Syama Priya Devi Dasi underlined the universality of divinity, asserting that God is a unifying force for all humanity. Their float featured Lord Jagannatha, the dark-blue hued incarnation of Krishna, who they gloriously praised through song and dance. The devotees also disseminated pamphlets elucidating the significance of chanting the Holy names of the Lord, further spreading their message of love and spirituality. The parade’s organizers acknowledged and expressed appreciation for the Hare Krishna’s contribution to the parade’s atmosphere of positivity and devotion.
Concluding at 55th Street, the parade culminated with a reviewing stand at 52nd Street, where the organizers extended their gratitude and recognition to each participating float.

September 2023 Visa Bulletin Unveiled By The U.S. Department Of State
Kuwait Airways is extending its network to include Washington Dulles, with flights using the Airbus A330-800neo starting in December. This route, the longest operated by the A330-800neo, covers 6,575 miles and will operate three times weekly. The A330-800neo offers 32 business class and 203 economy class seats. Notably, Kuwait Airways lacks crew rest areas on this aircraft type, impacting the available capacity. The new route mirrors the airline's existing service to New York JFK, with departure and arrival timings aligned closely. The Dulles route taps into an untapped market, with over 35,000 point-to-point passengers recorded in 2019, making it a significant connection between the Middle East and North America. The A330-800neo, operational with limited carriers like Uganda Airlines, Air Greenland, and Kuwait Airways, remains a rare commercial aircraft model. Its range is optimized for sub-long-haul flights, not necessarily focused on extensive range capabilities. The launch of this extended route to Washington signifies Kuwait Airways' strategic expansion and underscores the A330-800neo's specific design objectives. The inaugural flight on December 15th will mark a significant milestone for both the airline and the aircraft model.

New Delhi: (IANS) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested that India consider including three lefthanders within their top seven batting positions for the upcoming Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup in order to add variety in their line-up.

Expert advise to manage anger in kids
Anger is merely an emotion and kids do get every emotion, and as adults how we help them navigate through each emotion can make a huge difference.
Anger is merely an emotion and kids do get every emotion, and as adults how we help them navigate through each emotion can make a huge difference. There is a saying, “We become parents and realise our triggers due to childhood trauma. And while we learn to heal and navigate through it we give some trauma to our kids again”.
Anger is one such emotion we learn to manage through our parents and surroundings and our kids learn to manage their anger from our reactions and words.
We need to drill this in our heads and heart, “Kids are through us and not for us”. Kids give us an amazing opportunity to see how a baby (blank slate) is evolving as an emotionally and intellectually smart being. Change is a natural and irresistible process. We cannot stop it but we can definitely control it.
This is true for everything, yes even when it comes to raising kids. Kids can be molded and outcomes can be controlled.
Kids experience every emotion that we experience as an adult, happiness, sadness, anxiety, frustration, violence, love, empathy, etc. it's human to feel all emotions there is no such thing as negative or positive emotion when we deal with all emotions mindfully.
As an adult, we have developed a method of coping up with each emotion. The factors that determine how we deal with any motions are:
How you were guided to handle that emotion until the age of 5.
How you were treated for expressing that emotion.
Influence from the people around you
and society.
As a child, if you were guided to speak out whenever you need help, as an adult you will be ok in asking for help. As a child, if you were shamed for asking for help with things you do not know or cannot do, you will feel shameful every time you have to seek help. As a child, if you have seen your parents not accepting help from others you will burn out but never accept help.
So it all narrows down to how mindful we are or what we try to be while feeling, communicating, and reacting emotionally. Anger is one such emotion when handled mindfully can be resourceful to kids, it can help them understand their own shortcomings and help them grow and achieve great things in life. So what can be done to help kids navigate through anger or what factors should be taken care of to raise mindfully aware kids for the emotion of anger?
Kids have breakdowns, and tantrums because they are navigating hard feelings and in that moment all they need is a calm parent to help them navigate through the storm.
Hence anger in kids can be managed only by managing emotions in adults. But there are certain psychological conditions when kids cannot manage or navigate their emotions even after the parents try to be mindful and monitor the surroundings. We see such conditions often in the clinic under the diagnosis of autism and homeopathy with counseling has worked wonderfully in calming the nerves without giving any numbing effects of high quantity chemically loaded drugs. And this is therefore the future of psychology and medicine.

Breastfeeding boosts mother's heart health for 3 years or more: Study
Breastfeeding for six months or more appears to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems developing in mothers for at least three years after delivery, a new study has found The surprising cardio-metabolic benefit for maternal health is particularly important for women who experienced a complicated pregnancy, which can increase their chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. The study, published in the International Breastfeeding Journal, showed that women who breastfed a baby for at least six months experienced lower blood pressure and body-weight recovery (or BMI) for up to three years after the birth of their baby.
According to Professor Claire Roberts, who leads the Pregnancy Health and Beyond research group at Flinders University, the study was positive for women with pregnancy complications, as they recorded lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol measures at three years postpartum. "That means that breastfeeding improves women’s cardio metabolic risk factors, which is good news for new mothers who might be at risk of developing future cardiovascular and metabolic diseases," Roberts added.
Pregnancy complications are associated with later cardiovascular disease risk and their children are also at risk of impaired metabolic health earlier in life.
Along with neurological and other health benefits for babies,
the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for up to six months, and breastfeeding over 12 months to promote a significant reduction in both chronic hypertension and diabetes in women. The study conducted the follow-up of 280 women and their children between 2018 and 2021. "We found that women who breastfeed for at least six months had significantly lower body mass index (BMI), lower blood pressure, mean arterial pressure and lower central blood pressure than those who did not," said Dr Maleesa Pathirana from University of Adelaide.
"We found that if women with at least one major pregnancy complication -- like preeclampsia, gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes -- breastfeed for at least six months, they had significantly lower blood pressure, improved cholesterol profile and lower insulin compared to those who did not breastfeed for at least six months.
"These findings indicate an overall improvement in cardiovascular health," Dr Pathirana said. The researchers recommended further investigations in a larger sample size of women who breastfeed compared to those who choose not to breastfeed. They also recommended more interventions that support breastfeeding in disadvantaged or low socioeconomic areas, particularly for women with pregnancy complications to reduce their lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease.
New immunotherapy drugs show promise for cancer treatment
London: (IANS) British researchers have conducted a ground-breaking trial of a new cancer drug that has shown promise, with many patients experiencing remission for extended periods.
The experimental research, by the team at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, UK, focused on blood cancers like myeloma.
The results showed the majority of participants responding positively to treatment and people going into remission for months and years.
"A raft of new immunotherapy drugs, which are so experimental they do not yet have a name, mean some patients, such as those with myeloma, are seeing their cancer drop to undetectable levels," Dr Emma Searle, consultant haematologist at the Christie, was quoted as saying to PA Media, the national news agency for the UK.
"These drugs are a huge breakthrough in this type of cancer, allowing patients without standard treatment options to achieve remission, in many cases for months or years," she added. The drugs, which enable the immune system to see and attack the myeloma "are incredibly impressive" and will "absolutely" change the face of treatment for blood cancer, Dr Searle said. When used alone, positive response is seen in "over twothirds of patients who have no standard treatment options left".
blindness-free Gujarat' campaign
Over 8 lakh operations performed under 'cataract
Gandhinagar: (IANS) Under the ‘Rashtriya Netra Jyoti Abhiyan’ initiative, Gujarat not only reached its cataract surgery target for 2022-23, but also exceeded it by 504 per cent, performing 6,36,428 surgeries against an intended target of 1,26,300.
The state stands as a national frontrunner with a rate of 10,000 cataract surgeries per 10 lakh population. The state is already ahead of the 2023-24 target with an 81 per cent completion, performing 1,23,975 surgeries.
The ‘Rashtriya Netra Jyoti Abhiyan’ is a three-year campaign of the Government of India, aimed at reducing blindness prevalence to 0.25 per cent by May 2025. Individuals aged 50 and above, who are blind or visually impaired due to cataract, are entitled to free surgeries.
Aligned with the Central government's initiative, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the ‘Cataract

Blindness-Free Gujarat’ campaign in 2022. More than 8 lakh successful
operations have been performed under this campaign, covering all 33 districts and eight municipal corporation areas of the state.
The first of the four-phase campaign included a vision survey for people over 30; followed by registration of visually-impaired patients; patient surgeries; and follow-up action. Around 50,000 female ASHA workers were trained to facilitate vision tests through an 'E-card'. Additionally, hydrophobic intraocular lenses are provided free of charge after operations, reducing postoperative complications.
In an effort to streamline the process, the Health Department of the Gujarat government has launched a dedicated website - cataractblindfree.gujarat.gov. in - providing all necessary information, from primary registration to follow-up services.
These achieve a remission lasting one to two years in most patients. And when used in combination, the researchers saw positive responses in "over 90 per cent of patients… and the effect on life expectancy will be even longer".
Blood cancer can be hard to control and medics often find that patients are very sick because their entire immune system is affected.
Patients with myeloma used to survive for three to five years, though the latest data suggests half of patients are still alive after 10 years.
The trust is currently running around 30 clinical trials for blood cancer, with five specifically for myeloma, a disease originating from plasma cells in the bone marrow.
Many of the patients involved have limited or no other treatment options available, making the results more accurate.

Modi Blames Congress for Northeast Problems Amid Manipur Violence
Nearly 1 hour and 40 minutes and a walkout by the Opposition INDIA partners. That’s what it took for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on Manipur in the Lok Sabha on Thursday as he replied to the noconfidence motion.
When Modi finally spoke on the Manipur carnage, he spared only around 5 minutes and 30 seconds.
He devoted the rest of his time to hitting out at the Congress, blaming everything on the party and going all the way back to his pet target, the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Washington DC: African-American actress and singer Mary Millben on Thursday came out in support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Manipur issue and said that he will always fight for the people of the northeastern state. Her remarks came after PM Modi’s address in the Parliament in response to the no-confidence motion against his government.
Taking to her official Twitter handle, Mary Millben said that India has confidence in its leader. She stressed that the Opposition will “chant loudly without substance” and added that the truth “will always set people free.” Mary Millben in the tweet wrote, “The truth: India has confidence in its leader. The mothers, daughters, and women of #Manipur, India will receive justice. And #PMModi will always fight for your freedom. The truth: to associate with a party that dishonors cultural legacy, denies children the right to sing the anthem of its country, and degrades one’s country abroad, this is not leadership. This is unprincipled.”

Indian Embassy Condemns NY Police’s Sikh Beard Restriction
In a distressing development, the Gujarat High Court has become the focal point for the families of nine missing individuals who vanished under mysterious circumstances seven months ago while attempting to enter the United States illegally. The families have launched an emotional plea for legal intervention and action.

The genesis of the perplexing narrative is traced back to Bharat Rabari, whose wife filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Prantij police station. The report outlined how Rabari had fallen victim to the promises of Divyesh Patel and Mahendra Patel, agents who enticed him with the prospect of a US Work Permit Visa. Rabari agreed to pay a staggering Rs 70 lakh, initially giving Rs 20 lakh and committing to settle the balance upon safe arrival in the US. Investigations indicate that Rabari and eight others, including two women, embarked on a perilous journey that took them through Amsterdam, the Port of Spain, and Dominica.

New York State trooper Charanjot Tiwana sought permission to grow a beard for his wedding in March last year. However, his request was denied on the grounds that keeping a beard would pose a safety risk if required to wear a gas mask.
