Florida takes stock in Storm Idalia's aftermath

NEW YORK: - New York's attorney general on Wednesday asked a state judge to declare, even before the start of a trial, that Donald Trump committed fraud by submitting false statements to bankers and insurers and overstating his net worth by up to $2.23 billion. In filings with a state court in Manhattan, Attorney General Letitia James said evidence in her civil case showed "repeated and persistent fraudulent use" by Trump and his family business of false and misleading financial statements from 2011 to 2021. James said inflating values of more than a dozen assets by hundreds of millions of dollars established the defendants' liability for fraud under the state's Executive Law. "The cumulative effect of these numerous deceptive schemes to inflate Mr. Trump's assets, and hence his net worth, is staggering," and is "just the tip of a much larger iceberg of deception (the state) is prepared to expose at trial," James said.

Biden: Hurricane Idalia 'still dangerous' despite weakening

Florida takes stock in Storm Idalia's aftermath

US Probes Tesla's Secret 'Glass House' Expenditure

The worst of Hurricane Idalia appears to be over as storm surge warnings and watches for Florida were lifted Wednesday evening there, the National Hurricane Center said.

Idalia was also downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved over southeastern Georgia, the hurricane center said.

The storm surge watch had been discontinued along the Georgia coast, the center added in its advisory issued at 5 p.m. local time (2100 UTC).

The storm, however, continues to pose risks of localized flooding and strong winds in some parts of Georgia and the Carolinas into Thursday.

US President Joe Biden urged caution, saying Idalia was "still very dangerous" even though it has weakened in intensity.

Idalia roared into Florida's Big Bend region as a powerful hurricane Wednesday morning, bringing powerful winds and rains and knocking out power for thousands of people.

When the rain started to get really bad, Brent Berzett and David Hickmon sought refuge on their houseboat. Their floating home in Hudson, about an hour north of Tampa, certainly wasn't the worst place to wait out Idalia, a major hurricane that made landfall in Florida on Wednesday morning.

"The wind wasn't too bad," Mr Berzett told the BBC on Wednesday afternoon as they were assessing the damage and mopping up puddles of sea water in their kitchen.

"The carpet's toast. And some of the furniture too," he said.

But they were safe, and their neighbours were OK as well. Some people weren't so lucky and have lost more as the Category

3 hurricane, with winds up to 125mph (200km/h), barrelled through low-lying towns on Florida's Big Bend, on the state's west coast, before making its way inland and into the state of Georgia. US health department recommends looser restrictions on cannabis

San Francisco: (IANS) Federal prosecutors in the US are probing personal benefits Tesla allegedly paid to its CEO Elon Musk in order to build a lavish “glass house” for him. The Department of Justice (DoJ) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are investigating the use of Tesla funds to bankroll a secret project -- known internally at Tesla as ‘Project 42’ -- for Musk, reports the Wall Street Journal.

“Manhattan federal prosecutors are investigating Tesla’s use of company funds on a secret project that had been described internally as a house for Chief Executive Elon Musk,” the report said late on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

McConnell Freezes Again During Presser

New York: (IANS) The US Department of Labor announced it has recovered more than $71,047 in back wages and liquidated damages from a Floridabased Indian company, which denied overtime pay to 25 of its workers.

Patel Shippers LLC, which provides fruits and vegetables from India and Asia to grocery stores in 10 US states, paid straight-time rates for all hours worked, including for hours over 40 in a workweek, Labor's Wage and Hour Division found. The employer also failed to pay three workers at least the federal minimum wage by not keeping an accurate record of hours worked, in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The company was first registered to do business in Florida in 1985 and is run by president Ashish Patel and vice president Ramanbhai Patel, the Miami Herald reported, citing state records.

The US Department of Health and Human Services has called on the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to loosen federal rules on cannabis. The drug is illegal at the federal level despite 40 of 50 US states having passed laws legalising its use in some form.

Cannabis is currently listed in the same class of drugs as heroin and LSD. If the DEA changes its classification, it could mark the most significant shift in US drug policy in decades.

Cannabis is currently classified as a schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning it has no medical use and a high chance of abuse.

The change to schedule 3 would align it with drugs listed as having a low potential for dependency and abuse. Ketamine, codeine, and anabolic steroids fall under that classification. Last year, President Joe Biden asked his attorney general and health secretary to oversee a review on whether cannabis should be listed as a less serious drug. The proposal was presented to the DEA by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Tuesday. "As part of this process, HHS conducted a scientific and medical evaluation for consideration by DEA," the agency said in a statement.

Washington: (IANS) For a second time in just over a month, US Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell froze for more than 30 seconds while speaking to reporters at an event in Kentucky. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the press event in Covington when the 81-yearold McConnell, who leads the Republican party's narrow minority in the upper chamber of Congress, asked whether he would run for-re-election in 2026, reports the BBC.

Aides attempted to prompt the Senator, but it took several more seconds for McConnell to recover. He then answered two more questions, which had to be repeated by staff.

He made no comments about his health, before leaving with aides. "Leader McConnell felt momentarily lightheaded and paused during his press conference today," the BBC quoted a spokesperson as saying after the incident.

A staffer later told CBS News the the Senator "feels fine" but "will be consulting a physician prior to his next event".

England To Rollout World's First 7-Minute Cancer Treatment Jab

Britain's state-run national health service will be the first in the world to offer an injection that treats cancer to hundreds of patients in England which could cut treatment times by up to three quarters.

Following approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), NHS England said on Tuesday hundreds of eligible patients treated with the immunotherapy, atezolizumab, were set to have "under the skin" injection, which will free up more time for cancer teams.

"This approval will not only allow us to deliver convenient and faster care for our patients, but will enable our teams to treat more patients throughout the day," Dr Alexander Martin, a

consultant oncologist at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust said. NHS England said atezolizumab, also known as Tecentriq, is usually given to patients intravenously, directly into their veins via a drip, which could often take around 30 minutes or up to an hour for some patients when it can be difficult to access a vein. "It takes approximately seven minutes, compared with 30 to 60

Indians granted highest number of German work visa in 2022

Indians grabbed the lion's share of the 152,336 national work visas granted to foreign nationals by the German authorities in 2022, according to the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.

Johannesburg: The death count from a fire that engulfed a five-storey building in central Johannesburg on Thursday has risen to 63, the South African city's emergency services said. "We are now on 63 fatalities and 43 people injured who were transported to various healthcare facilities," said Emergency Management Services spokesman Robert Mulaudzi. Firefighters who were called to the scene put out the flames and search and recovery operations were ongoing.

India says it has lodged a "strong protest" with China over a new map that lays claim to its territory.

Indian media have reported that the map shows the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and the disputed Aksai Chin plateau as China's territory. It was released by China's ministry of natural resources on Monday. "We reject these claims as they have no basis," India's foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said. He added that such steps by China "only complicate the resolution of the boundary question". Beijing has not officially responded yet. India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar also called China's claim "absurd".

Fukushima: Japan PM eats fish from region after waste water row

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ate "very delicious" fish sashimi from Fukushima, in a video released by the Japanese government. It follows a row over the discharge into the sea of treated radioactive wastewater from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown. The United Nations atomic energy regulator says the discharge of filtered water into the Pacific Ocean is safe and will have "negligible" impact on people and the environment. But China, the leading buyer of Japan's fish, announced on Thursday it was making a total ban on its seafood products, due to concerns for consumers' health.

New Delhi: (IANS) Indians grabbed the lion's share of the 152,336 national work visas granted to foreign nationals by the German authorities in 2022, according to the Federal Foreign Office of Germany. Indians were granted a total of 17,379 work visas last year, with the majority of them -- 8,613 -- being granted by the German Consulate General in Bengaluru, marking a significant increase compared to 2021, SchengenVisaInfo.com reported. The second-highest number of work visas for Indians was granted by the German Consulate General in Mumbai -- 3,013, -- followed by the Consulate

General in Chennai (2,483), the German Embassy in New Delhi (2,434), and the German Consulate in Kolkata (836). While visiting India earlier this year, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had said that his government wants to ease the path for information technology experts from India to obtain work visas in the European country. A survey by Munichbased Ifo Institute released earlier this month found the country facing an acute labour crisis with more than 43 per cent of nearly 9,000 firms polled suffering from a lack of qualified workers in July -- up from just over 42 per cent in April this year.

told reporters. The private Embraer jet on which Prigozhin was travelling to St Petersburg from Moscow crashed north of Moscow killing all 10 people on board on August 23, including two other top Wagner figures, his four bodyguards and a crew of three. Kuala Lumpur: (IANS) Malaysia on Thursday celebrated its 66th Independence Day with parades, fireworks and large scale gatherings under the theme of unifying ties between the nation's diverse groups. Shortly after midnight on Wednesday, thousands of Malaysians marked the occasion through the singing of patriotic songs and other activities, with the festivities culminating in a parade overseen by King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah at the administration centre of Putrajaya on Thursday morning, reports Xinhua news agency.

N.Korea fires 2 short-range ballistic missiles: Seoul

The Kremlin said on Wednesday that the investigation into the plane crash that killed mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin included the possibility that it was caused deliberately, its first explicit acknowledgement that he may have been assassinated.

“It is obvious that different versions are being considered, including the version — you know what we are talking about — let’s say, a deliberate atrocity,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov

The plane crashed exactly two months after Prigozhin took control of the southern city of Rostov in late June, the opening salvo of a mutiny that shook the foundations of President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Russia has informed Brazil’s aircraft investigation authority that it will not probe the crash of the Brazilian-made Embraer jet under international rules “at the moment”, the Brazilian agency told Reuters.

Seoul: (IANS) North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, in apparent protest against combined South Korea-US military drills, the Seoul government said on Thursday.

Ready For Jammu And Kashmir Polls Anytime Now, Centre Tells Supreme Court

Srinagar: The Centre today told the Supreme Court that elections could be conducted in Jammu and Kashmir anytime now, but the decision lies with the Election Commission and the state poll panel.

The statements came during the hearing of a bunch of petitions challenging the scrapping of Article 370. The Centre had earlier argued that Jammu and Kashmir was one of a kind and the bifurcation was needed.

In its last hearing on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had laid emphasis on the need to restore democracy in J&K, which has been without an elected government since June 2018.

During today’s hearing, the Centre though refused to provide a timeframe on restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. So far, at the heart of the arguments, is if due process was followed while

abrogating Article 370 and dividing state into two union territories- J&K and Ladakh.

Chinese President Xi Jinping likely to skip G20 summit in India

Chinese President Xi Jinping is likely to skip a summit of G20 leaders in India next week, sources familiar with the matter in India and China told Reuters. Two Indian officials, one diplomat based in China and one official working for the government of another G20 country said Premier Li Qiang is expected to represent Beijing at the September 9-10 meeting in New Delhi. Spokespersons for the Indian and Chinese foreign ministries did not respond to requests for comment. The summit in India had been viewed as a venue at which Xi may meet with US President Joe Biden, who has confirmed his attendance, as the two superpowers seek to stabilise relations soured by a range of trade and geopolitical tensions.

“Would Make A Very Good...”: Trump’s Big Praise For Indian-American Rival

The government said that polls could take place any time now, but the decision lies with the Election Commission and the state poll panel.

Leaders and petitioners from Ladakh have expressed their disappointment over The Solicitor General’s statement that Ladakh will remain a Union Territory. Over the last two years, there have been massive protests in Ladakh demanding statehood for the region. After scrapping Article 370 in August 2019, the Centre had said that it will restore statehood at an appropriate time. Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated the same but no deadline has been set for such a move.

Indian Admits MultiMillion Dollar US Fraud Scheme

New York: Donald Trump, running to be US President again, heaped big praise on his Indian-American rival Vivek Ramaswamy saying that he would make a “very good” vice-president. During an interview, Trump said, “He (Vivek Ramaswamy) is a very, very, very intelligent person. He’s got good energy, and he could be some form of something.”

“I tell you, I think he’d be very good,” he

added when asked if he had considered the 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur for vice-president. His remarks come just a week after the first Republican debate which Trump did not participate in but promised to watch for potential vicepresidential picks. Vivek Ramaswamy was the top draw at the event where 8 Republican candidates, vying to contest the US Presidential elections, debated in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on why the party should pick them.

New York, Aug 31 (IANS) An Indian national has admitted that he defrauded various telephone providers and insurance companies out of millions of dollars by using stolen or fake identities to submit fraudulent claims for replacement cellular devices and then reselling those devices outside the US.

Parag Bhavsar, 42, of Newark, pleaded guilty before US District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo to information charging him with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit interstate transfer of stolen property. His sentencing is scheduled for January 3, 2024, US Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced on Wednesday.

According to documents filed in the case and statements made in court, from June 2013 through June 2019, Bhavsar was involved in a widespread scheme to defraud cellular telephone providers and insurance companies using the US Postal Service mail system, as well as other third-party mail carriers. He and his conspirators used stolen and fake identities to submit false claims of lost, stolen or damaged cellular telephones, as well as other devices, in order to obtain replacement devices. Bhavsar and his conspirators maintained a network of mailboxes and storage units across the US, including in New Jersey, where the replacement devices would be shipped and then held before being sold to third parties outside the country.

Indian-American dentist admits stealing $500k Covid relief money

New York: (IANS) A 46-year-old Indian-origin doctor of dental surgery in California has pleaded guilty to stealing $500,000 Covid-19 relief money and using it for personal expenditures, such as investments. Ranjan Rajbanshi, who ran a dental practice in Bakersfield and Santa Barbara, received over $850,000 in Covid relief money from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from April 2020 through February 2022. He represented to the government that he would only use the relief money for specified business purposes such as facility costs, payroll, and

protective equipment for him and his staff, a release by US attorney's office for Eastern District of California stated last week.

Rajbanshi subsequently used $500,000 of the relief money for improper personal expenditures such as investments. He has agreed to pay that money back to the government before his sentencing.

facilities, privileges, or services in all business establishments.

Approved on Monday, the bill now moves to Governor Gavin Newsom who will sign it into law, making California the first US state to add caste as a protected category in its antidiscrimination laws.

A 46-year-old Indian-origin doctor of dental surgery in California has pleaded guilty to stealing $500,000 Covid-19 relief money and using it for personal expenditures, such as investments.

He is scheduled to be sentenced by US District Judge Ana de Alba on December 4, and faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and fine of $250,000. The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which

take into account a number of variables. Last month, around 14 people, including several Indian-origin business owners and employees, were charged in a $53 million fraud scheme involving a Covid-19 pandemic relief programme in Texas.

The case was considered the largest investigated by the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee (PRAC) Fraud Task Force thus far.

Set up on May 17, 2021, the task force bolsters efforts to investigate and prosecute the most culpable domestic and international criminal actors and assists agencies tasked with administering relief programs to prevent fraud.

October proclaimed as ‘Hindu Heritage Month’ in US state of Georgia

San Francisco, Aug 29 (IANS) In a move that would make caste bias illegal and strengthen social justice, the California State Assembly has passed the anti-caste discrimination bill with an overwhelming 50-3 margin.

Arrest Made in Fatal Shooting of IndoCanadian

Toronto: (IANS) Canadian Police said it has arrested another suspect in connection with the murder of a 37-yearold Indo-Canadian man in Ontario province last year. Eduardo Tito Silva, 34, was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in connection with the fatal shooting of Shawn Singh at Park Street North in Peterborough, on July 2, 2022.

Officers had responded to a daytime shooting and located Singh, who later died in hospital due to his injuries. He was Peterborough's second homicide victim of 2022. "At approximately 11 p.m. on August 22, 2023, Eduardo 'Tito' Silva was located and taken into custody.

"Thank you to all the Assembly members who voted in support of SB 403 today. We are protecting people from a longstanding form of discrimination with SB 403," Wahab said on X.

Among Indian-Americans, lawmakers Jasmeet Bains and Ash Kalra supported the bill, which was introduced in the Senate just weeks after Seattle became the first city in the US to ban caste discrimination.

The Ambedkar Association of North America (AANA), a non-profit working towards underprivileged castes, called the development “landmark”, “historic” and “unprecedented”.

New York: (IANS) Acknowledging the contributions of the Hindu-American community in the US state of Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has declared that October will be celebrated as 'Hindu Heritage Month' in the state. With this move, Georgia joins a list of states from across the country, including Texas, Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Georgia, Florida, Minnesota, Virginia, etc, to commemorate Hindu heritage, culture, values, and traditions.

Haley: Harris Presidency Chances Raise Concerns

October is significant as it is the birth month of Mahatma Gandhi and is often when major Hindu holidays such as Navratri and Diwali are celebrated. "The Hindu heritage, culture, traditions, and values provide their followers invaluable solutions to many of life's problems and often serve as a source of inspiration, reflection, and contemplation for the millions of individuals who look to the teachings of Hinduism for guidance," the Proclamation read.

"During the month of October 2023, the Hindu community across the State of Georgia and across our great nation will collectively celebrate its heritage by focusing on its culture and the diverse spiritual traditions rooted in India."

Washington: (IANS) Firing a fresh salvo at US Vice President Kamala Harris, fellow Indian-American and Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has said that the prospect of her presidency should "send a chill up every American’s spine".

In an interview to Fox News, Haley, who has called Harris "incompetent" and "unbelievably extremist", expressed concern at the prospect of the vice president becoming leader if Democrats register a win in the 2024 presidential

elections. “My concern is we cannot have Kamala Harris as President. We can’t chance this. We have to make sure that we have a new generational leader that’s going to bring in not only Republicans, but we’re going to pull back the independents," Haley told Fox News on Sunday. "We’re going to bring back in the suburban women, we’re going to bring in Hispanics. We’re going to bring in the Asian community. We have to make sure we win this, because the thought of Kamala Harris being President should send a chill up every American spine.”

In the first Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee last week, the former South Carolina Governor had said that "anybody is better than Kamala Harris", bolstering her previous stance that a vote on President Joe Biden is a vote on his 2024 running mate Harris.

Welcoming the move, CoHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America), a Hindu advocacy group in the US, said that "it is gratifying to see Georgia recognise the contribution of HinduAmericans".

"Our thanks to Governor @ BrianKempGA for this recognition. This was made possible by the untiring dedication of our friends at the Hindus of Georgia PAC. Hinduism has contributed greatly to the cultural milieu of America," CoHNA wrote on X on late Wednesday.

"It is gratifying to see Georgia recognise the contribution of Hindu-Americans and Hinduism at the same time that California is targeting us with #SB403," the Hindu group said, mentioning the recent passage of the anti-caste discrimination bill recently moved in the California Assembly.

Geetika Srivastava First Woman To Lead Indian Mission In Pakistan

New Delhi: Geetika Srivastava will be India's new charge d'affaires at its High Commission in Islamabad, becoming the first woman to hold that post.

Currently serving as joint secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), she will succeed Dr M Suresh Kumar who is likely to return to New Delhi.

Although the job entails several responsibilities, a charge d'affaires is a diplomat who temporarily heads a diplomatic mission in a foreign country in the absence of the Ambassador or High Commissioner. Diplomatic missions between Commonwealth countries are called High Commissions, while those between non-Commonwealth countries are called Embassies.

The Indian and Pakistani missions in Islamabad and New Delhi have been without High Commissioners since August 2019 and are being headed by their respective charge d'affaires.

Ajay Bisaria was the last Indian High Commissioner to Islamabad before Pakistan downgraded the status of the High Commission following the abrogation of Article 370.

Since 1947, when the late Sri Prakasa took

charge as India's High Commissioner in Pakistan, there have been 22 heads of the mission. Ms Srivastava, a 2005 Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer will become the first woman in the role. She served in the Indian High Commission in China from 2007

Adani Group Rejects "Recycled Allegations" In OCCRP Report

New Delhi: The Adani Group today rejected what it called "recycled allegations" of hidden foreign investors in a report by the George Soros-funded Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

"We categorically reject these recycled allegations. These news reports appear to be yet another concerted bid by Soros-funded interests supported by a section of the foreign media to revive the meritless Hindenburg report. In fact, this was anticipated, as was reported by the media last week," said the ports-topower conglomerate in a statement. The OCCRP report has alleged insider trading via two foreign investors. The claims, the conglomerate said, were based on closed cases from a decade ago when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) probed allegations of over-invoicing, transfer of funds abroad, related party transactions and investments through FPIs (Foreign Portfolio Investors).

"An independent adjudicating authority and an appellate tribunal had both confirmed that there was no overvaluation and that the transactions were in accordance with applicable law. The matter attained finality in March 2023 when the Supreme Court of India ruled in our favour. Clearly, since there was no over-valuation, there is no relevance or foundation for these allegations on transfer of funds," the Adani Group asserted.

"Notably, these FPIs are already part of the investigation by the SEBI. As per the Expert Committee appointed by the Supreme Court, there is no evidence

of any breach of the Minimum Public Shareholding (MPS) requirements or manipulation of stock prices," said the group.

"It is unfortunate that these publications, which sent us queries, chose not to carry our response in full. These attempts are aimed at, inter alia, generating profits by driving down our stock prices and these short sellers are under investigation by various authorities."

It was vital to respect the ongoing regulatory process, given that the Supreme Court and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) are both overseeing the matter, the company added.

"We have complete faith in the due

process of law and remain confident of the quality of our disclosures and corporate governance standards. In light of these facts, the timing of these news reports is suspicious, mischievous and malicious - and we reject these reports in their entirety," the statement said.

The CBI also investigated the allegations of over-evaluation and over-invoicing of power transmission equipment. It closed the case on 15 July 2015.

The Enforcement Directorate has found that 18 companies, including foreign portfolio investors and foreign institutional investors in tax havens, were the top beneficiaries from short selling in shares of Adani Group companies after the Hindenburg report that led to a market crash in January.

The Enforcement Directorate has shared its findings with SEBI. Sources say probe agencies may investigate money laundering and other allegations against these companies.

Currently serving as joint secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), she will succeed Dr M Suresh Kumar who is likely to return to New Delhi

to 2009 and also had postings at the Regional Passport Office in Kolkata and as Director of the Indian Ocean Region division in the external affairs ministry. Women diplomats from India have served in Pakistan previously but not in top positions such as this. Additionally, the role of a High Commissioner in Pakistan, besides the rigours of international diplomacy, especially between two countries that have been at loggerheads since 1947, comes with its unique set of challenges. Islamabad was designated a "nonfamily" posting for Indian diplomats a few years ago, which plays a role in limiting women officers from taking up the role.

Rs 759 cr liquor sale during 10-day Onam festivities in Kerala

The maximum sale of liquor was reported on the first Onam day on Monday when it touched Rs 116 crore

Thiruvananthapuram: (IANS) Alcohol sale in Kerala touched an all time high of Rs 759 crore during the ten-day Onam celebrations starting August 21, Bevco -- the sole wholesaler of liquor and beer in the state -- stated on Thursday.

Last year, the figure stood at Rs 700 crore.

Incidentally, while people gulped down liquor worth Rs 759 crore, the state government got richer by a staggering Rs 675 crore through taxes. There were more reasons to cheer for the state as the state-run Travancore Sugars and Chemicals Limited's Jawan Rum went off the shelves like hot cakes.

During the festivities, the maximum sale of liquor was reported on the first Onam day on Monday when it touched Rs 116 crore.

According to Bevco, six lakh people purchased alcohol on that day.

In August, the total sale of liquor reached Rs 1,799 crore, up from Rs 1,522 crore during the corresponding month last year, it added.

If necessary, I will stay away from politics for some years and work for my goal of turning India into Hindu Rashtra, he told reporters.

Earlier this month he had stated in the state Assembly that he will not be a member in the next Telangana Assembly. The controversial legislator also remarked that both ghar wale and bahar wale don’t want him in the next Assembly. He, however, did not elaborate. Assembly elections are due to be held towards year-end.

On Monday, China released a new “standard” map that shows Aksai Chin, which it occupied in the 1962 war, and Arunachal Pradesh, which it claims as South Tibet, as part of its territory. The map also shows the entire South

China Sea as part of China, as it had in previous editions.

Kishore Kethineni, an Indian American CEO of many software and IT companies in the Bay Area has been sentenced to two years in prison. Kethineni, admitted to fraudulently obtaining over $3.1 million in PPP loans with his two brothers.

He is now jailed for his role in a conspiracy to commit bank fraud and for his failure to pay over more than $2 million in employment taxes.

The PPP is a Covid-19 pandemic relief program administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA) that provided forgivable loans through third-party lenders to small businesses for payroll and certain other expenses. There were four companies involved in the fraud by the name of BiteGate, Inc., Dinenamics, Inc., Neelinfo, Inc.,

and TechPMC, Inc. He was the sole owner and CEO of all the companies. Kethineni and his brothers submitted many PPP loan applications, in which

they made fraudulent representations and provided false payroll data and records to obtain loans and loan forgiveness under the program. Together the brothers submitted at least a dozen PPP loan applications on behalf of their companies. The applications got approval and funding of loans over $3.1 million in PPP funds. Congress to update the “woefully outdated” immigration system, including the temporary visa programs like the H-1B visa for high skilled foreign workers coveted by Indians.

“As we have said many times before: This is an outdated immigration system,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Monday in response to a question 56 lawmakers’ request to help H-1B workers in light of concerns about Canada recruiting H-1B holders from the US.

“We’ve asked Congress to update our woefully outdated immigration system. We’ve been very clear on that including the temporary visa programs that haven’t been updated in more than two decades” she said.

On July 28, 56 US House members, led by Indian American Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Larry Bucshon, (RIN) had sent a bipartisan letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting the Biden Administration to take executive action to provide relief to highskilled employment-based visa holders.

What About Punjab, Northeast: Supreme Court Questions J&K Bifurcation

Chief Justice of India

DY Chandrachud also questioned how to ensure that the power to bifurcate a state will not be “misused” once it is conceded to the Central government.

Experts Urge India’s Strategic Vision & Boost in Space Tech

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir is not one-of-a-kind and Punjab and the Northeast have faced similar situations, the Supreme Court pointed out yesterday, questioning the need for bifurcation of the border state in August 2019.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also questioned how to ensure that the power to bifurcate a state will not be “misused” once it is conceded to the Central government -- a point that led to a discussion on why the question of bifurcation could not have been settled by parliament.

During Day 12 of the hearing of a bunch of petitions challenging the scrapping of Article 370, the Centre had argued that Jammu and Kashmir was one of a kind. “If Gujarat or Madhya Pradesh were to be bifurcated, then parameters would be different,” said Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Justice SK Kaul, who was part of the fivejudge constitutional bench led by Justice Chandrachud, pointed out that the country has many states with borders. When Mr Mehta responded that all the neighbouring countries are “not friendly” and there is a need to mainstream Jammu and Kashmir in view of its history and current situation -- “stone pelting, strikes, deaths and terror attacks” -- the Chief Justice weighed in.

New Delhi: Six decades after its first rocket launch, India, with the success of its Chandrayaan-3 mission now has a surer footing in the field of space exploration and technology. But now, experts say is time the country came up with a national strategic vision on a space policy, boost space-tech, propel its space economy and maximise its geopolitical gains.

India’s goals of becoming a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council is still unfulfilled, but it is now part of an elite group of nations that have been to the moon. These include China, Russia, and the United States. Several aspirants, including Israel, Japan, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates have not succeeded in landing on the moon’s South Pole.

Supreme Court asks Centre for timeframe to make Jammu and Kashmir a State again

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the government for a “timeframe” to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and stressed the importance of the restoration of democracy. The court - hearing several petitions challenging the scrapping of Article 370, which gave J&K its special status - also asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, “Can you convert a State into a UT? Can a UT be carved out of a State?” To this Mr Mehta replied in the affirmative and pointed to Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh as examples.

In 2019 the government - amid a furious pushback from political activists and opposition leaders - scrapped Article 370 and split Jammu and Kashmir into

two union territories - J&K and Ladakh. The government had assured its critics

Gujarat witnesses 49% surge in crorepati taxpayers

Islamabad, August 29 (IANS) The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday suspended former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sentence in the Toshakhana case and ordered his release from jail.

A division bench of the IHC, comprising Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Tariq Mehmood Jahangir, announced the much-anticipated reserved decision, The Express Tribune reported. The court said that the copy of the judgement will be available shortly. On Monday, the counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the defendant in this case, concluded his arguments.

India and the UK are edging closer to a free trade deal that both sides are hoping to wrap up very soon. But there are still tough hurdles to overcome and New Delhi’s call for easing visa restrictions and greater access to the labour market aren’t even on the table.

India has agreed to slash duties on Scotch whisky sharply from 150 per cent to 100 per cent and make similar duty cuts on imports of British automobiles and automotive components, The Times, London has reported.

In exchange, India is requesting that

Indians who work in Britain for short stretches -- such as tech workers there on short-term projects – should be exempted from social security payments. Currently, Indians there for short stays have to make social security payments that they lose if they’re not there for a minimum number of years.

A trickier issue is that India also wants legal assurances about rules regarding Indian students in the UK. Under tough new rules introduced by Britain’s hardline Home Secretary Suella Braverman, students won’t be allowed to have family members accompanying them during their studies. Braverman is also trying to shorten the time students are allowed to stay on in Britain after they complete their courses.

Ahmedabad, Aug 29 (IANS) Gujarat has witnessed a significant surge of 49 per cent in the number of ‘crorepati’ taxpayers, individuals declaring an annual income of Rs 1 crore or more, for the assessment year 2022-23, as per the latest data from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

Comparatively, the count of individuals with taxable income exceeding Rs 1 crore surged by 4,500, reaching a record-breaking figure of 14,000, as indicated by official statistics, in contrast to the 9,300 individuals in the same bracket in the preceding year of 2021. Remarkably, this marks the highest number of crorepati taxpayers recorded over the past five years, exhibiting a remarkable doubling from 7,000 to 14,000 individuals within this time frame.

Neeraj Chopra Strikes Gold at World Athletics Championships, Sets New Record

Neeraj Chopra has won every title his sport offers but the Olympic champion is not someone who would sit on laurels, rather he would push himself to excel further since “throwers have no finish line”.

Chopra on Sunday became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the World Championships with a big throw of 88.17m. A World Championships gold was the only missing trophy in his decorated cabinet. Besides the Tokyo Olympics gold, he has won the yellow metal in the Asian Games (2018) and Commonwealth Games (2018). He has also won four individual Diamond League Meeting titles (two each in 2022 and 2023) apart from Diamond League champion’s trophy last year. He also became junior world champion in 2016 and won the Asian Championships title in 2017.

The Haryana government has tightened security in the district by deploying 1,900 Haryana Police personnel and 24 companies of paramilitary forces.

New Delhi: Hindu groups have said they will go ahead with their “shobha yatra” in Haryana’s Nuh today, despite the authorities denying permission for any rally in the communally sensitive district.

Six people were killed in clashes that broke out in Muslim-majority Nuh on July 31, when a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession was attacked by mobs. The dead included two home guards and a cleric.

In response to the defiance, the Haryana government has tightened security in the district by deploying 1,900 Haryana Police personnel and 24 companies of paramilitary forces at inter-state and inter-district borders. The state administration denied permission for the yatra due to the G20 Sherpa Group meeting in Nuh from September 3 to 7 and the need to maintain law and order after the July 31 violence.

Muhammad Masood, a Pakistani medical doctor, has received an 18year prison term followed by 5 years of supervised release for attempting to aid a foreign terrorist group. Operating under an H-1B visa at a Minnesota clinic, Masood used encrypted messages in early 2020 to plan his journey to join ISIS. Despite COVID-19 border closures, he altered his plans and aimed to reach Syria via Los Angeles with the help of an accomplice.

Apprehended at the Minneapolis airport, Masood later admitted guilt and was sentenced by Judge Paul A. Magnuson. The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force led the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Winter and Trial Attorney Dmitriy Slavin oversaw the case's prosecution.

WASHINGTON, DC- A policy by the Biden administration that permits people from Latin America and the Caribbean to temporarily reside and work in the U.S. is facing legal challenges from Republican-leaning states. This humanitarian parole program, launched in January, allows up to 30,000 individuals from countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the U.S. monthly for urgent humanitarian or public benefit reasons. Participants can stay up to two years, undergo background checks, and require financial sponsorship.

Around 160,000 migrants have entered through this program by June’s end.

21 Republican-leaning states have contested its legality, asserting that it bypasses Congress and essentially establishes a new visa system. The challenge will be heard by District Judge Drew Tipton in Texas.

Advocates include seven U.S. citizens sponsoring program participants, represented by immigrant rights groups.

One sponsor, Eric Sype, supports a Nicaraguan family affected by natural disasters and political turmoil, emphasizing the program’s importance in a broken immigration system. This initiative is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to expand legal pathways for immigrants fleeing instability, distinct from the Republican challenge in Texas. The Department of Homeland Security cites these efforts as instrumental in reducing southern border crossings. Challengers argue the program oversteps statutory parole authority and strains state resources, but supporters, like Esther Sung of the Justice Action Center, assert its necessity in a challenging immigration landscape.

I have never been into building or flipping cars for sale. But I am always on the lookout for going to local car shows as well as international car shows. My husband and son enjoy this passion too. For many Indians watching the show, seeing a Maruti Van on stage brought back memories of India they left behind. In this significant entry, Garg says, “Maruti van is not a very familiar car with the audiences and people of America. The van was very special for me because it was my first family car. I got to make several memories in that car with my dad who passed away when I was 14. So, bringing the Maruti van on the show and then converting it into a life-size Hot Wheels that I called, “Jaipur Jewel,” was a homage to my dad and my culture.

About her being part of a reality show, Garg says, “I took it as an opportunity to do something out of my comfort zone and do something different. My son is a huge Hot Wheels fan and has more than 200 cars! I really did it for him. He was my biggest inspiration.” She adds, “I hope this win shows to the younger immigrant generation that anything is possible as long as we have the courage and belief in ourselves. It also shows that one should never quit. I may be the first person of Indian-origin to have designed a Hot Wheels and I am proud of my little achievement.”

SRK’s Jawan Crosses $200k In Advance Bookings In The US; Trailer To Release On Burj Khalifa

OHIO- There are presently 46 school districts in Ohio that have been granted authorization to arm their teachers and staff members. This information stems from data provided by the state earlier this month, reflecting an up-todate overview. Out of these districts, five of them are classified as local. The school districts within the local jurisdiction that have received the state’s authorization include Adams County Christian School, Eastern Local Schools District in Brown County, Southern Ohio Educational Service

Center, Williamsburg Local School District, and Bright Local.

Remarkably, slightly more than a year has elapsed since the enactment of House Bill 99 by Governor Mike DeWine. This legislative measure was signed into law, leading to a reduction in the prerequisites necessary for training staff members who intend to carry firearms on school premises. The bill brought about changes in the training requirements, streamlining the process for staff members seeking to bear firearms within the campus environment.

Shah Rukh Khan’s awaited release Jawan is already creating ripples in the US even before the release of its official trailer.

On Monday, SRK took to platform X, to inform his fans that the film’s poster will be launched at Burj Khalifa. The film will be released in theatres across the globe on September 7. He also asked his fans to wear red as the trailer would be launched on Burj Khalifa. SRK wrote on social media: “Jawan ka jashn main aapke saath na manau yeh ho nahin sakta. Aa raha hoon main Burj Khalifa on 31st August at 9 PM and celebrate JAWAN with me. And since love is the

most beautiful feeling in the world, toh pyaar ke rang mein rang jao and let’s wear red…what say? READYYYY!”

While the excitement in India and Dubai is palpable, Shah Rukh fans in the US too are awaiting the release. The advance bookings of the film opened a month ahead of its release date in Canada and in the US and going by the numbers it looks like the public just lapped at the opportunity. According to updates on social media the movie has already collected $210,339 from ticket sales across 450 locations across the US. Shah Rukh’ last release Pathan too was a mega hit in North America.

New York: (IANS) Novak Djokovic made a stunning comeback to the US Open after he was denied the calendar grand slam in the 2021 final by the Russian Daniil Medvedev.

In his opening-round encounter on Monday night against Frenchman Alexandre Muller, Djokovic displayed a sheer governing performance at the Arthur Ashe Stadium with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 scoreline. With the win, he regained his top stop at the ATP World Rankings from defending US Open Champion Carlos Alcaraz on September 11, when Djokovic will start a record-extending 390th week at the top.

In Arshad Nadeem, India's Neeraj Chopra will have tough competition for the javelin gold medal at the Paris Olympics, but the Pakistani ace says for now both are just "very happy" to call the shots in a sport once dominated by the Europeans.

Nadeem bagged silver in the men's javelin throw final in Budapest on Sunday, as Olympic champion Chopra won the gold medal.

"Neeraj and I have a very healthy competition and we respect each other a lot. There is no Pakistan-India rivalry in a bad way. When we talk, we are just

"It is a very satisfying achievement for me to get a distance of 87.82 metres as I returned to international competition after nearly a year due to my elbow surgery," he said.

For Nadeem, it has been a long journey from his village in Mian Chunnu in Pakistan's Punjab province where his elder brothers and school's sports master forced him to take up athletics.

"I wanted to be a cricketer but my brothers and sports master told me I had the physique and stamina to be a top athlete," he said.

"I want to win an Olympic gold for my country. It will require a lot of hard work, training and the best equipment."

Rohit Sharma Emphasizes Staying Relaxed and Focused

Multan:(IANS) Captain Babar Azam stood tall to slam a mammoth 151 off 131 balls and was well supported by middle-order batter Iftikhar Ahmed hitting 109 not out off 71 balls as Pakistan thrashed Nepal by 238 runs in the Asia Cup opener, here at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Electing to bat first on a dry pitch, Pakistan lost their openers early and had suffered a middle-overs slump. But Babar and Iftikhar shared a sensational 214-run partnership for the fifth wicket, the highest-ever for Pakistan at this position in the ODIs.

“I want to get into the phase I was in before the 2019 World Cup.”

As an experienced batter, Rohit will have to shoulder the burden of giving the team a good start in the forthcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. Four years ago during the last ODI World Cup, Rohit scored five centuries, totalling 648 runs at an average of 81.00. India will again look to Rohit to match if not better that achievement this time around at home. India begin their campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8. “...It is important how I keep myself relaxed and not worry about external factors that play a role, whether positively or not negatively. I want to shut out everything,” Rohit said.

A lot has changed since that 2019 edition for Rohit. “I was in a great frame of mind and prepared really well for the tournament,” he said about the last edition. “I was in good shape, good mindset. I want to bring that back and I have time to do that. Trying to recollect what were the right things that I was doing before the 2019 World Cup as a cricketer and as a person. I want to revisit that thought-process of mine personally,” Rohit said.

“A person can’t change overnight with his success or failures,” he said.

“I am not the person who thinks about what kind of legacy I will leave behind. My legacy will be for people to judge and talk about... I am thinking about what gives me happiness. It’s all about creating memories and creating a good rapport with my teammates.”

It takes a combination of practise, the right form, and general health to increase your running speed and endurance, says a fitness expert. Running is a great form of workout and with practice and consistency this can be turned into lifelong passion. Whether or not you are running professionally, it can offer a host of health benefits provided you don't go overboard and give your muscles, bones and ligaments sufficient time to recover. For beginners who are looking to extend their running time, setting a goal of 5K race is a reasonable target. Run half marathons or marathon every month to improve your running skills. You may be at risk of muscle or ligament injury if you overuse them and thus it's important to listen to your body and cover distances that suit you. It's also important to work on your diet and hydration to support your run. Building stamina gradually, stretching before and after running, training consistently and taking rest and repair time can also help.

"Runners who dedicatedly run every day would always think of running faster and performing better. It takes a combination of practise, the right form, and general health to increase your running speed and endurance. Being able to run is one thing, but being able to run effectively while pursuing a goal is quite another. If you've recently taken up running or have reached a plateau and want to learn how to run faster," says

1. Increase your weekly mileage by 10-20 per cent

Aim for around a 10-20 percent increase in weekly mileage, spread evenly throughout your runs, and schedule a couple of ‘down weeks’ when your mileage is lower, to help your body to recover. You can obtain enough quality mileage if you run three or four times a week. These ought to consist of a tempo run, some kind of speed work, and a longer run to increase endurance. Your weekly routine should include some nice easy runs if you can handle more than four sessions.

2. Eating well

3. Hydration

It is always necessary to have an adequate amount of water in a day, but when you are working out hydration plays a more important role. To stay hydrated, drink lots of water and healthful drinks like coconut water and herbal teas.

4. Stretching after running

Every workout should begin with a warmup and end with a cooldown.

Unhealthy traits are associated with early heart attacks, strokes: Study

Many people in their 40s and 50s have a bit of fat around the middle and marginally elevated blood pressure, cholesterol or glucose but feel generally well, are unaware of the risks and do not seek medical advice,” said study author Dr Lena Lönnberg of Västmanland County Hospital, Västerås, Sweden. “This scenario, called metabolic

syndrome, is a growing problem in Western populations where people are unknowingly storing up problems for later in life. This is a huge missed opportunity to intervene before heart attacks and strokes that could have been avoided occur.

The metabolic syndrome is thought to affect up to 31 per cent of people

After a run, stretching will assist to avoid lactic acid buildup, which lessens swelling and pain in the muscles.

5. Consistent training

The key to running faster and longer is consistency. Maintain a consistent workout routine that incorporates a mix of easy runs, long runs, speed work, and restoration days. Aim for a balanced strategy that over time increases speed and endurance. Include interval training and strength training to ensure you don’t lose muscles and active recovery of muscles can happen by weight lifting.

worldwide. Previous research has demonstrated that those who have metabolic syndrome are more vulnerable to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and early demise. In this study, the relationship between asymptomatic metabolic syndrome in midlife and cardiovascular disease and death up to three decades later was examined.

Dr Lönnberg said: “As metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors, the level of each individual component does not have to be severely raised. In fact, most people live with slightly raised levels for many years before having symptoms that lead them to seek health care. In our study, middle-aged adults with metabolic syndrome had a heart attack or stroke 2.3 years earlier than those without the collection of unhealthy traits. Blood pressure was the riskiest component, particularly for women in their 40s, highlighting the value of keeping it under control.”

Paper cups are no alternatives to plastic cups to avoid toxic chemicals, as the latte coffee you take with you in a paper cup (along with paper lid) can also harm living organisms if it ends up in nature.

Reports of plastics pollution contaminating all parts of the Earth and in all living things has accelerated a shift to alternative materials.

However, paper cups are just as toxic as plastic cups.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden show this in a study testing the effect of disposable cups made of different materials on the larvae of the butterfly mosquito.

“We left paper cups and plastic cups in wet sediment and water for a few weeks and followed how the leached chemicals affected the larvae. All of the mugs negatively affected the growth of mosquito larvae,” said Bethanie Carney Almroth, professor of environmental science at the University of Gothenburg.

Paper that is used in food packaging material needs to be treated with a surface coating. This plastic protects the paper from the coffee in your hand. Nowadays, the plastic film is often made of polylactide, PLA, a type of bioplastic.

Bioplastics are produced from renewable resources (PLA is commonly produced from corn, cassava or sugarcane) rather than fossil-fuels as is the case for 99 per cent of plastics on the market. PLA is often regarded as biodegradable, meaning that it can break down faster than oil-based plastics under the right conditions, but it can still be toxic, according to the study published in the journal Environmental Pollution. Bioplastics do not break down effectively when they end up in the environment, in water.

“There may be a risk that the plastic remains in nature and resulting microplastics can be ingested by animals and humans, just as other plastics do. Bioplastics contain at least as many chemicals as conventional plastic,” said Almroth.

Donald Trump Surrenders on Charges of Election Result Tampering

The former US President was released on $200,000 bond and headed back to the airport for his return flight home to New Jersey

Donald Trump has surrendered to authorities in Georgia at the Fulton County Jail on charges of plotting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results in an unprecedented moment resulting in the first-ever mug shot of a former American president.

Trump, 77, spent about 22 minutes inside the jail where he was booked before his release on Thursday. A massive motorcade and police presence accompanied him to the jail from the Atlanta airport and back.

His surrender in Georgia marks the fourth time this year the former president has turned himself in after criminal charges were brought against him by federal and state officials. But it’s the first time he was subjected to a mug shot.

Trump, a Republican, also posted the mug shot to his X account, formerly known as

Congress Grills PM Modi Over Space Budget, Chandrayaan-3 Delay

The Congress on Thursday questioned the Narendra Modi government for cuts in the budgetary allocation for space missions and alleged delay in payment of salary to engineers who worked on the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

A day after the Congress sought to puncture the hype around Modi’s leadership for the achievement of landing on the moon by recalling how India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had created the key infrastructure for technological advancements, general secretary K.C. Venugopal raised critical questions about the government’s attitude towards science.

Ramaswamy Raises

Twitter, as well as to Truth Social, both posts with the words “election interference” and “never surrender.” It marked Trump’s first tweet since January 8, 2021, two days after the Capitol riots.

The Fulton County Jail released a mugshot picture of him, which soon went viral. The jail authorities recorded him as being 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing 215 pounds (97kg), with blond or strawberry hair and blue eyes. His inmate number was P01135809. Released on a bail of USD 200,000 bond, Trump told reporters soon thereafter that he did nothing wrong.

The conditions of the agreement in part prohibit Trump from intimidating his co-defendants, witnesses or alleged victims in the case, including on social media. Before he boarded his plane back to New Jersey, Trump said that it was “a very sad day for America.” “You should be able to challenge an election,” he said. “I thought the election was a rigged election, a stolen election, and I should have every right to do that.” Trump’s booking at the Fulton County Jail came 10 days after the former president was charged in Georgia in what was his fourth criminal indictment since March — and his second tied to his alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election results and remain in the White House.

Trump mocks IndianAmerican VP Kamala Harris’ accent

In his conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Xi Jinping stressed that improving China-India relations serves common interests and is conducive to peace and stability of the region and the world. This was said in a Chinese readout on Friday on the exchanges between the two leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Summit in Johannesburg. India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra on Thursday said Prime Minister Modi conveyed to President Xi India’s concerns on the “unresolved” issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC)

in eastern Ladakh, underlining that maintenance of peace and tranquility in border areas was essential for normalisation of India-China ties. The Chinese readout described the conversation between the two leaders on Wednesday as “candid and in-depth”.

“On August 23, President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on current China-India relations and other questions of shared interest on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit,” it said. “President Xi stressed that improving China-India relations serves common interests of the two countries and peoples, and is also conducive to peace, stability and development of the world and the region,” it said.

Washington, Aug 25 (IANS) Taking a jab at Indian-American Vice President Kamala Harris’ accent, saying she “speaks in rhyme”, former US President Donald Trump said that he does not see her as a presidential candidate for Democrats. While his Republican rivals engaged in a war of words at the first presidential primary debate in Milwaukee on Wednesday, Trump appeared on former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson’s show where he took digs at President Joe Biden and Harris. When asked about the chances of Harris becoming the candidate for Democrats in the next Presidential election, Trump said that “this is not a president of the United States future”.

Indian-American businessman and Republican presidential aspirant Vivek Ramaswamy attended the first Republican candidates’ debate of 2024, held at Milwaukee, Wisconsin this week. At the debate, Ramaswamy was called a guy who sounds like ChatGPT as well as an “amateur Barack Obama,” by former New Jersey governor Chris Christie. Christie said, “Hold on, I’ve had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT,” referring to Ramaswamy’s opinion on climate change.
