Biden campaign memo: Many paths available on road to 2024 victory
WASHINGTON: (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's re-election campaign attempted to set the tone for the battle to come on Thursday, saying the incumbent Democrat will have many roads to victory in 2024.
Despite polls showing tepid support for the 80-year-old president who would be 86 by the end of a second term, the Biden campaign saw reason for optimism in 2024. The president will seek to repeat 2020 victories in two hotly contested states, Arizona and Georgia, Biden campaign manager Julie Rodriguez said in a memo released to news media.
In addition, Rodriguez said Biden will not concede Florida, which has gone Republican in recent elections and has produced two Republican presidential candidates this cycle, former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Biden faces no major opposition on the road to winning his party's presidential nomination. The Republican campaign, on the other hand, is gathering steam with Trump leading a crowded field. Democrats were buoyed by an

Rodriguez said based on the 2022 victories, "That means the president and vice president enter this cycle with a number of viable pathways to 270
electoral votes."
To be elected a candidate must win 270 of the state by state electoral votes. Rodriguez said the Biden campaign will make early investments in closely fought states like Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as well as in Nevada and New Hampshire. All these states are on the Republicans' wish list for 2024.

Montana is set to become the first US state to ban Chinese-owned media giant TikTok from personal devices. Governor Greg Gianforte signed the ban into law on Wednesday. It is due to take effect on 1 January.
The video-sharing platform says the ban "infringes on the First Amendment rights of the people of Montana". TikTok has come under scrutiny from authorities around the world over concerns that data could be passed to the Chinese government. Mr Gianforte, a Republican, told lawmakers that a wider ban would further "our shared priority to protect Montanans from Chinese Communist Party surveillance." TikTok said in a statement that it was used by "hundreds of thousands of people" in Montana.

New York: (IANS) Indian-American Captain Pratima Bhullar Maldonado has become the highest-ranking South Asian in the New York Police Department (NYPD), a position she was promoted to last month.
Maldonado runs the 102nd Police Precinct in South Richmond Hill -- home to one of the largest Sikh communities in the US -- and is now the NYPD's first female South Asian captain, CBS News

The top-ranking cop told CBS News that it wasn't easy climbing the ranks. "Getting out there and working, and protecting people that are cursing you out sometimes and not appreciating what you're doing, but you still got to do what you got to do," Maldonado said. "It's a big responsibility. I want to be a better and positive example, not only for my community, for other females, kids that see us every day. Because that would change their perspective of how they view law enforcement," she said.

China expels Canadian diplomat in tit-for-tat move
China has expelled Canada's consul in Shanghai in retaliation for Ottawa sending home a Chinese diplomat accused of trying to intimidate a Canadian MP.
On Monday, Canada declared China's diplomat Zhao Wei "persona non grata" and ordered her to leave the country.
In response, China on Tuesday ordered the removal of Jennifer Lynn Lalonde, Canada's diplomat in its Shanghai Consulate.
"China reserves the right to further react," Beijing said in a statement. Both diplomats have five days to exit the countries.
The next five years are expected to be the warmest period on record, the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Wednesday.

The UK is lobbying the EU over a Brexit trade deal deadline that carmakers have warned pose a threat to UK industry.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the UK was "engaged in a dialogue" with the EU about a looming rule change that could affect UK electric car hopes. Carmakers in Britain and the EU have been asking for the rule change to be pushed back.
Stellantis, which owns Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat, has said that its UK factories are at risk. The company has previously committed to making electric cars in the UK, but now says these plans are under threat. It has warned it could face tariffs of 10% on exports to the EU due to rules on where parts are sourced from. From next year, 55% of the value of an electric car should originate in the UK or EU to qualify for trade without tariffs. This will rise to 65% in 2027.
Stellantis said it was "now unable to meet these rules of origin" due to the recent surge in raw material and energy costs.Speaking to reporters on a trip to Japan, Mr Sunak the approaching deadline was "something that car manufacturers across Europe, not just in the UK, have raised as a concern".
Imran Khan calls for independent inquiry into violence following his arrest
Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday demanded an independent inquiry into the violence following his arrest last week as he distanced himself and his party from attacks on state and military installations.
Khan made the demand in an address to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore via video link, amid reports that his house has been surrounded by the police.
Ahead of his address, Khan said in a tweet that police had surrounded his house in an upscale area of Punjab’s provincial capital Lahore and he could be arrested. “Probably my last tweet before my next arrest. Police has (sic) surrounded my house,” the 70-yearold leader tweeted.
In his address, Khan said the ruling coalition is deliberately trying to create a conflict between his party and the powerful army.
Former Pakistan PM made the demand in an address to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore
“The cases that are being filed under military laws — it never happened before that without any investigation or independent inquiry … it was suddenly decided that PTI is a terrorist organisation,” Khan said, adding that 7,500 workers of his party have been arrested.
The former Prime Minister said he criticises the army the same way he criticises his children, which is for
reform.
“The Pakistan Democratic Movement is trying for a confrontation between the army and PTI... But who will come out as the winner in this?” he asked. Khan said he has defended the Pakistan Army across the world. “I was a known face. Name another Pakistani who defended the army the way I did on international media,” he asked.
“And I did it because I am a free man. I never accepted slavery.” Recalling the incidents leading to the creation of Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan), Khan said, “I am afraid today that Pakistan is on the route to destruction.”
“I fear that if wisdom is not exercised today, we might reach a stage where we wouldn’t even be able to pick up the pieces,” he said. Meanwhile, DawnNewsTV reported that all the roads leading to Khan’s Zaman Park residence have been blocked by the police.
The censures mark a significant deterioration in relations between Ottawa and Beijing following reports of alleged Chinese political interference in Canada.

Indian national pleads guilty in multimillion dollar call centre scam in US
In a significant development, Zaheen Malvi, a 28-year-old Indian citizen residing illegally in Heber Springs, Arkansas, has entered a guilty plea for his involvement in a years-long international conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. The scheme, which operated through Indian call centers, extorted millions of dollars from hundreds of victims in the United States. The announcement was made by Alamdar S. Hamdani, the US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas.
Hamdani emphasized the relentlessness of the Indian call centers perpetrating these scams, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals such as the elderly. However, he affirmed that law enforcement remains equally relentless in their pursuit of justice. With Malvi’s
guilty plea, one more individual is being held accountable for his role in facilitating the flow of money from victims to overseas scammers, and efforts will continue in combating such fraudulent activities.
Court records revealed that Malvi initially served as a runner in the scheme, visiting various Target stores in the Chicago area to deplete funds from gift cards that victims had transferred to the call centers. Subsequently, he took on the responsibility of managing other runners who traveled across the country, collecting
packages filled with cash sent by call center victims.
The telemarketing scheme commonly employed a script that manipulated victims into believing they were under investigation by federal agents. The fraudsters on the phone convinced victims that the only way to clear their names was to purchase gift cards and transfer the redemption codes to the call center or mail cash in packages to specified addresses.
As part of his plea agreement, Malvi will be required to pay restitution to the identified victims of the scheme. US District Judge Andrew S. Hanen accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for August 14. Malvi faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison and a potential fine of $250,000. Pending the hearing, he will remain in custody.

India's April heatwave were 30 times more likely due to climate change: Study
Human-caused climate change made April's record-breaking heatwave in Bangladesh, India, Laos and Thailand at least 30 times more likely, according to an analysis conducted by a group of leading climate scientists. The study by World Weather Attribution also emphasises that the region's high vulnerability, known as a heatwave hotspot, exacerbated the impacts of the heatwave.
During April, parts of south and southeast Asia faced an intense heatwave, reaching unprecedented temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius in Laos and 45 degrees Celsius in Thailand. This extreme heat resulted in widespread hospitalisations, infrastructure damage, wildfires, and school closures. The exact number of fatalities is currently unknown. Climate change has globally intensified heatwaves, making them more frequent, longer lasting, and hotter.
To assess the impact of climate change on the Asian heatwave, scientists analysed weather data and computer model simulations, comparing the current climate, with approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius of global warming since the late 1800s, to historical climate conditions using peer-reviewed methodologies. The analysis focused on the maximum temperatures and heat index over four consecutive days in April in two regions: South and east India, Bangladesh, and all of Thailand and Laos.
The heat index, which considers both temperature and humidity, provides
The study by World Weather Attribution also emphasises that the region's high vulnerability, known as a heatwave hotspot, exacerbated the impacts of the heatwave
a more accurate understanding of heatwave impacts on the human body. The findings reveal that climate change made the humid heatwave in both regions at least 30 times more likely. The realised temperatures during the heatwave were at least two degrees Celsius higher than they would have been without climate change. Unless immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is not taken, global temperatures will continue to rise, resulting in more frequent and severe
heatwaves like this one.
In the past, such intense heatwaves occurred in Bangladesh and India once in a century, on average. However, now they can be expected approximately every five years. If emissions are not rapidly curtailed, a two-degree temperature increase is projected within the next 30 years, leading to these events occurring at least once every two years.
For Laos and Thailand, the recent humid heatwave would have been highly improbable without the influence of climate change. Even with the impact of climate change considered, this type of heatwave remains extremely rare, happening only once every 200 years. However, if temperatures rise by 2 degrees Celsius, these heatwaves will become more frequent, occurring approximately once every 20 years, the report said.
it to re-consider the August deadline. "You tell us what you have done because we had already granted you two months. We have granted you now further extension of three months which makes it five months. So, effectively you are asking for six months. We have granted you already five months," the CJI said. "We are not granting an indefinite extension of time. If there is some genuine difficulty, you let us know," Justice Chandrachud told Mehta. Mehta requested if the time given for wrapping up the investigation could be extended till the end of September. "Mr solicitor, we have two options. We could have given you time right now until September 30. Alternatively, you tell us on affidavit say by August 15 what is the position.... We have not specifically dealt with each individual issue but we have said that you will give us an updated status report on the course of the investigation...," the CJI said.
On May 15, the SEBI had told the apex court that it was not investigating the Adani group since 2016 and termed such claims as "factually baseless".

New Delhi: Top leaders of the Congress, including Rahul Gandhi, will meet Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar on Wednesday as the party closes in on naming the next Karnataka Chief Minister after the election win over the weekend.
The suspense over the Karnataka Chief Minister’s post after the Congress’s emphatic victory in the assembly elections entered the fourth day on Wednesday after party chief Mallikarjun Kharge met the two contenders last evening.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will visit the US in the first week of June and address NRIs on June 4 in New York, sources in the Indian Overseas Congress said Tuesday. Gandhi is also likely to visit Washington DC and Los Angeles during his over-a-week-long stay in the US, they said.
The sources said that during his visit he would address NonResident Indians (NRIs) in New York on June 4 but the venue has not been finalized and would be fixed this week.
During his US visit, he may interact with university students as well. In March this year, Gandhi had visited the UK during which his remarks alleging that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions, had created a row back home.

The creator of advanced chatbot ChatGPT has called on US lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence (AI).
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, testified before a US Senate committee on Tuesday about the possibilities - and pitfalls - of the new technology. In a matter of months, several AI models have entered the market. Mr Altman said a new agency should be formed to license AI companies. ChatGPT and other similar programmes can create incredibly human-like answers to questions - but can also be wildly inaccurate.
Mr Altman, 38, has become a spokesman of sorts for the burgeoning industry. He has not shied away from addressing the ethical questions that AI raises, and has pushed for more regulation.

US Embassy to issue more Student Visas to Indians than last year
HiIndiaUS Embassy in India plans to open the next batch of student visas in the next couple of weeks and hopes to issue more visas this year than before, according to US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti.
An effort is being made to reduce the wait time not just for students but also for first-time visitors with the embassy assigning staff to focus on the issue, he told reporters Monday during a visit to Ahmedabad, his first outside the capital.
“I think we will show that this year we will be able to go past the earlier numbers and get to an even higher number,” he said. “The President (Joe Biden) is very focused on this too. He has told me to reduce visa issuance time not just for students but also for first-time visitors and others.”
Garcetti said in the last three months, the wait time was brought down by
60% from where they were in December.
“In the coming year, we will bring the wait time down further,” he said. “My goal as an ambassador is to think of five years and 20 years from now.”
“Indian students are so great for America. They are great for our universities, they are great for our commerce,” Garcetti said.
“Look at the number of Indian-born CEOs of great companies based in America. It is good for the American economy, it’s great for the Indian economy, and it’s just good for
civilisation too,” he added. Garcetti said when he first came to India at the age of 14, the trade between India and the US was just two billion dollars.
“Today, it is over 100 billion dollars and it (US) is the number one trading partner with India. Back then, there were no defense cells, zero dollars, and now we are an important part of a mutual strategy to keep our people safe and protect the Indo-Pacific region together,” he said.
The Congress’s decision on appointing the next Karnataka Chief Minister is certain to affect the party’s prospects in the next year’s general election.

Sources say the new building of Parliament, which is in its final stages, will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister in the last week of May, to mark nine years of his government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken the oath of office nine years ago on May 26, 2014.
The four-storey building, built at an

The Congress on Monday expressed shock at the Narendra Modi government “misleading Parliament” about market regulator Sebi investigating Adani companies, and wondered whether a “restraining hand from above” had prevented any such probe.
The comments came after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) told the Supreme Court that the claims that it had been investigating the Adani group since 2016 were “factually baseless”.

New York, May 16 (IANS) A 76-year-old Indian-origin physician has admitted that he illegally prescribed opioids to patients outside the usual course of his professional practice in the US.
The US Senate has confirmed Indian American Geeta Rao Gupta as the Ambassador at Large for Global Women’s Issues in the State Department. According to court documents, Chopra, who was arrested in 2018, prescribed drugs -- including hydrocodone,

These drugs are highly addictive and commonly abused. They affect the central nervous system and may only be prescribed when medically required.
Chopra was arrested in 2018 and surrendered his medical license in 2020. He faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
The actual sentence, however, will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.

The Malayalam Tovino Thomas-starrer '2018 Everyone Is A Hero', directed by the award-winning popular director, Jude Anthany Joseph, is having a dream run and moving toward the Rs 100-crore club, a rare feat for a Mollywood movie.
And coming as it does at a time when 'The Kerala Story' is attracting nationwide attention, people close to the Malayalam film industry are saying that '2018' is "the real Kerala Story" and not the one that claims to be one.
The film is centred around stories of humanity triumphing over adversity in the backdrop of the 2018 floods that devastated parts of Kerala. It is the second Tovino project to attract national attention and draw an adulatory audience response after the 2021 superhero movie 'Minnal Murali'. And it also brings back memories of his performance in 'Virus', the 2019 film about the Nipah outbreak in Kerala.
Tovino, incidentally, volunteered his services for flood relief back in 2018. In the film, he plays a young man who leaves the Indian Army with a fake medical certificate and redeems himself during the floods.
The ensemble cast includes top Malayalam talents, notably Asif Ali, Kunchacko Boban, Lal and the National Award-winning actress, Aparna Balamurali, who plays a TV reporter.

Film music is going through a dark phase: Ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas
In January last year, Ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas completed 40 long years of his career. With more than 50 albums under his belt and some ever-green film songs including 'Chitthi Aayee Hai and 'Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise, the singer was all set for a grand celebration -- 40 concerts across the country. However, he could do only one at the Nehru Stadium in Mumbai in January.
"Things changed completely after Covid struck. Nobody could imagine," laments this Padma Shri recipient.
For someone who has always preferred live concerts, jumping the digital bandwagon, like many other singers was not really an option. "You just cannot create the right atmospherics in a virtual concert. There is no intimacy, no immediate feedback and no interaction with the audience," said Udhas.
"It's sad that today as far as audio labels are concerned, they show zero per cent physical sales. Now even DVDs are more or less gone. So the point is when physical sales are gone, how do you monetize eight numbers? In order to create eight songs, one needs money -- to pay the poet, studio and musicians.

Opening up about the plot, Harjinder said: "Set in the early 90's, the story highlights the demographics of Uttar Pradesh. It is a fast paced, action, full gun blazing series, where I am one of the STF cops, who is the part of a team meant to eradicate crime syndicates from the state." "To portray the role of the STF officer who blends well in public and remains incognito, one had to adapt to the demeanour of the locality. I had to learn the tone and tenor of the area while maintaining the gait to suitably merge into the populace. The attire was to be conducive to the period of the early 90's where men dressed in loosely fitted clothes.

India’s RateHiking Cycle Ends as Inflation Hits 18-Month Low
Last month, the Reserve Bank of India defied financial market forecasts and kept interest rates on hold at its monetary policy meeting. It announced it was taking a “waitand-watch” approach to inflation. Now, it seems the central bank was right to hit the pause button. India’s consumer price inflation hit an 18-month low of 4.7 per cent in April, helped by a slowdown in food price increases. The data released late on Maty 12 also marked the second month in a row that inflation remained below the central bank’s ceiling of 6 per cent. Do the inflation numbers released mean that after six interest rate hikes the Reserve Bank’s aggressive tightening cyle is over?
Economists say that’s too early to say with the global economic outlook remaining uncertain and worry that weather-roiling El Nino may play spoiler to the monsoon.

NRS Pay’s Cash Discount Revolution: Freedom Of Choice
HiIndia NewsdeskPrior to the 1950s, when the first credit card was introduced, most customers paid for their purchases with cash. Credit cards became more convenient when customers no longer had to carry loose cash to pay at checkout. Moreover, credit cards became a safer way for customers to pay for items, as they allowed the customer to have control over their finances and did not require them to carry large amounts of cash that could easily be lost or stolen. Credit cards have grown in popularity over the years, and their use continues to rise due to the numerous benefits credit card companies provide. However, when customers use their credit cards to pay for purchases, merchants are taking a hit and, consequently, being forced to pay additional fees.
To address these concerns, credit card companies have been offering “cash discount programs.” A cash discount program allows the store owner to accept credit card payments while providing discounts to customers who pay with cash. The POS automatically tabulates cash prices, and customers get a cash discount at the register. A cash discount program is ideal for any retailer that processes a high volume of credit card transactions.
Cash discount programs are becoming
increasingly popular with retailers and are well-received by customers. National Retail Solutions, known for its powerful point of sale (POS) system, has a credit card processing service, NRS Pay. Thousands of satisfied merchants save money nationwide with NRS Pay credit card processing. NRS Pay is gaining popularity fast for offering honest, clean credit card processing services without hidden fees, long-term, locked-in contracts, or early termination fees. The bill was successfully adopted by the Illinois House on March 29, 2023, with the Illinois General Assembly urging the official recognition of cricket as a sport in the state. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause as these milestones were celebrated.
Congressman Raja Krishamoorthi, an avid cricket enthusiast himself, expressed his support for APCL and reminisced about his own cricket days. Dr. Srinivas Reddy, Chairman of APCL, emphasized the significance of cricket in fostering unity and brotherhood among team members, extending beyond the game itself.

STAMFORD, CT- Stamford police have issued a warning to bank customers, urging them to remain vigilant while using ATMs due to a recent surge in scams. Although it has been several years since this particular scam tactic was prevalent, it has resurfaced once again. The scam involves the use of skimming devices designed to capture information from the magnetic strip on debit cards, while strategically positioned cameras attempt to record customers entering their PINs. Over time, the introduction of chip technology and touchless scanning, alongside the traditional magnetic strip, has helped reduce the occurrence of such scams. Investigator Sean Coughlin emphasizes the importance of utilizing the chip feature whenever possible, as it enhances the security of personal passwords and private information.
However, in recent weeks, law enforcement authorities have discovered two skimming devices in Stamford, one in Greenwich, and another in Bridgeport—all of them located at ATMs operated by banks. In light of these incidents, the police are urging individuals to exercise caution and maintain awareness when using ATMs. They advise covering the keypad with your hand while entering your PIN to prevent potential surveillance. Additionally, if the ATM appears to be powered off, feels unusual, fails to accept the card properly, or displays errors, it may indicate tampering, in which case it is recommended to switch to a different ATM. In the event that you suspect the ATM you are using is compromised, the police recommend contacting the bank immediately, as they will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to investigate the situation further.

US Supreme Court Upholds Illinois’ Ban On Sale Of Rapid-Fire Assault Weapons
Mariappan Subramanian
New York:(IANS) A 32-year-old
Indian man died on the spot after being hit by a car at a pedestrian crossing in the US state of Florida.
Mariappan Subramanian, who worked as a Test Lead with HCL Technologies, according to his LinkedIn profile, died on Monday at Hillsborough County in Tampa. The car which struck him had jumped a red light, according to a fundraiser page. Mariappan is survived by his wife and their four-year-old son who are living in India. He had recently relocated from Jacksonville to Tampa. "We are initiating this fundraiser on behalf of Mrs Mariappan and seeking your generous support.
WASHINGTON, DC — The the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal regarding the Second Amendment, specifically related to a law in Illinois that bans the sale of rapidfire assault weapons commonly used in mass shootings. The court’s decision to reject the emergency appeal, which sought to block the local ordinance and state ban, does not constitute a ruling on the broader constitutional issue but indicates a positive outcome for nine other states with similar assault weapon bans.
Traditionally, the Supreme Court would halt the enforcement of a new law if it deemed it unconstitutional. However, in this case, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago had scheduled arguments on the constitutional matter for late June, and the Supreme Court might have chosen to wait for their ruling before making a decision.
It’s important to note that the Supreme Court has yet to directly address whether an AR-15-style rifle is protected under the Second Amendment. In the past, challenges to similar state and local laws based on the Second Amendment
have been turned away. However, last year, gun-rights advocates celebrated a more conservative court striking down laws in New York and elsewhere that restricted law-abiding citizens’ ability to carry concealed weapons in public. In a majority 6-3 opinion authored by Justice Clarence Thomas, it was stated that gun restrictions can only be upheld if they align with the historical tradition of firearms regulation in the nation. However, shortly after this decision was announced, a tragic incident occurred in Highland Park, Illinois, where a
shooter armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle and high-capacity magazines opened fire during an Independence Day parade, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. In response, the city of Naperville and the state of Illinois enacted new laws prohibiting the sale and possession of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. While the sale ban was immediately enforced, a gun store owner and multiple gun-rights groups filed a lawsuit to challenge these measures as violations of the Second Amendment.

Injured Jofra Archer out of Ashes, Bairstow replaces Foakes for Ireland test
HiIndia NewsdeskEngland pacer Jofra Archer was on Tuesday ruled out of the Ashes series starting next month but a fit-again Jonny Bairstow has returned to the Test squad for the one-off match against Ireland on June 1.
Archer spent 17 months on the sidelines following elbow and back injuries before returning to international cricket in January. He played five matches for Mumbai Indians before the injury cut short his IPL stint last week.
“It has been a frustrating and upsetting period for Jofra Archer,” Rob Key, managing director for England men’s cricket, said. “He was making good progress until a recurrence of the elbow injury, which kept him out for an extended period previously.

Madrid Open Apologises For Denying Women's
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah’s administrative and diplomatic skills will be put to test later this week when the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected to convene a meeting to discuss the hosting of the Asia Cup. Shah, who is also the chairman of the ACC, has so far stuck to India’s stand of not playing in Pakistan and refused to accept the ‘hybrid’ model as suggested by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi.
Doubles Finalists Speeches
During an interaction with The Telegraph on Tuesday, the PCB chairman said that they will abide by government instructions, much like the BCCI, but India’s participation in the Asia Cup, even via the ‘hybrid’ model, could open up new shores as far as their participation in the World Cup in India is concerned.

Madrid Open organisers apologised Thursday after not allowing the women's doubles finalists to make speeches after the match at the tournament last week, amid allegations of sexism. The mens' doubles finalists were allowed to speak to the crowd after their matches.
Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia beat Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff in the women's final on Sunday but were not given a microphone to let them address the crowd.

"Not giving our women's doubles finalists the chance to address their fans at the end of the match was unacceptable and we have apologised directly to Victoria, Beatriz, Coco and Jessica."
Tsobanian said the tournament was working with the WTA to improve their process in the future.
"We made a mistake and this will not ever happen again," he added.

It was a very emotional moment for me, says Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni's autograph on his shirt
NewsdeskHiIndia
When one legend asks for an autograph from another, the moment has to be a special one. So it was for Sunil Gavaskar when he requested Mahendra Singh Dhoni for an autograph on his shirt.
Gavaskar, a former India captain and a legendary batsman, got his shirt autographed by Dhoni during Chennai Super Kings’ last league match at their home — the MA Chidambaram Stadium — against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Gavaskar, who was on the field with the broadcast unit after the game on Sunday night, requested Dhoni to sign his shirt as the Chennai players were doing a lap of honour around the stadium.“When I got to know that Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni are going to take a lap of honour at
Chepauk, I decided to create a special memory. That’s why I ran towards MSD to take his autograph. It was his last home game at Chepauk,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Star Sports.
“So, I went to Mahi and requested him to sign an autograph on the shirt that I was wearing. It was so nice of him to acknowledge it. It was a very emotional moment for me because this fellow has made immense contributions to Indian
cricket,” he added.
CSK are currently placed second in the standings and look set to make the IPL playoffs. But it is yet to be determined whether the Dhoni-led side would be back at the Chepauk, which will host the Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, for the playoffs.
“Of course, he will get a chance to play here if CSK qualifies for the playoffs. But I decided to make that moment special. I was fortunate enough that someone in the camera unit had a marker pen. So I am thankful to that person as well,” said Gavaskar. For Gavaskar, Kapil Dev lifting the World Cup in 1983 and Dhoni hitting the winning six in the 2011 World Cup final are the “two cricketing moments I would love to see before I die”.

The inside of your mouth is the perfect place for bacteria to thrive: it’s dark, it’s warm, it’s wet and the foods and drinks you consume provide nutrients for them to eat.
But when the harmful bacteria build up around your teeth and gums, you’re at risk of developing periodontal (or gum) disease, experts say, which is an infection and inflammation in the gums and bone that surround your teeth.
And such conditions in your mouth may influence the rest of your body, said Kimberly Bray, a professor of dental hygiene at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, US.
A growing yet limited body of research, for instance, has found that periodontal disease is associated with a range of health conditions including diabetes, heart disease, respiratory infections and dementia. Exactly how oral bacteria affect your overall health is still poorly understood, Bray said, since the existing research is limited and no studies have established cause-and-effect.
But some conditions are more associated with oral health than others, experts say. Here is what we know.
Gingivitis
It is not uncommon to have some form of periodontal disease. In its early stages, called gingivitis, the gums may become swollen, red or tender and may bleed easily. If left untreated, gingivitis may escalate to periodontitis, a more serious form of the disease where gums can recede, bone can be lost, and teeth may become loose or even fall out.
With periodontitis, bacteria and their toxic byproducts can move from the surface of the gums and teeth and into the bloodstream, where they can spread to different organs, said Ananda P. Dasanayake, a professor of epidemiology at the New York University College of Dentistry, US.
This can happen during a dental cleaning or flossing, or if you have a cut or wound inside your mouth, he said. If you have inflammation in the mouth that is untreated, some of the proteins responsible for that inflammation can spread throughout the body, Bray said, and potentially damage other organs.
Diabetes
Of all the associations between oral health and disease, the one with the most evidence is bet-ween periodontal disease and diabetes, Bray said. And the two conditions seem to have a two-way relationship, she added: periodontal disease seems to increase the risk for diabetes, and vice versa.
Researchers have yet to understand exactly how this might work, but in one review published in 2017, researchers wrote that the systemic inflammation caused by periodontal disease could worsen the body’s ability to signal for and respond to insulin, leading to diabetes.
In another study, published in April, scientists found that diabetics who were treated for periodontal disease saw their overall healthcare costs decrease by 12 to 14 per cent.
“You treat periodontal disease, you improve the diabetes,” Dasanayake said.
Pneumonia
If large amounts of bacteria from the mouth are inhaled and settle in the lungs, that can result in bacterial aspiration pneumonia, said Dr Frank Scannapieco, a professor of oral biology at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in New York state in the US. This phenomenon has been observed mainly in patients who are hospitalised or older adults in nursing homes, and is a concern for those who can’t floss or brush their teeth on their own, said Dr Martinna Bertolini, an assistant professor of dental medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, US.
Preventive dental care such as with professional teeth cleanings, or periodontal treatments like antibiotic therapy, can lower the risk of developing this kind of pneumonia, Dr Scannapieco of Buffalo School said.
Cardiovascular disease
In a report published in 2020, an international team of experts concluded that there is a significant link between periodontitis and increased chances of heart attack, stroke, plaque buildup in the arteries and other cardiovascular conditions.
While researchers haven’t determined how poor oral health might lead to worse heart health, some evidence suggests that periodontal bacteria from the mouth may travel to the arteries in vascular disease patients, potentially playing a role in the development of the disease.
And a 2012 statement from the American Heart Association noted that inflammation in the gums has been associated with higher levels of inflammatory proteins in the blood that have been linked with poor heart health.
Some research also suggests that better oral hygiene practices are linked with lower rates of heart disease. Pregnancy complications
A number of studies and reviews have found associations between severe periodontal disease and preterm, low birth weight babies, Dasanayake said. Though more research is needed to confirm the link. In a 2019 review, researchers found that treating periodontal disease during pregnancy improved birth weight and reduced the risk of preterm birth and the death of the foetus or the newborn.
And in a 2009 study, researchers found that oral bacteria could travel to the placenta — potentially playing a role in chorioamnionitis, a serious infection of the placenta and amniotic fluid that could lead to an early delivery, or even cause life-threatening complications if left untreated.
Dementia
Researchers have been increasingly interested in the role of oral health in dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, Scannapieco said.
“Bacteria that are found in the mouth actually have been identified in the brain tissue of patients with Alzheimer’s,” he said, implying a potential role for them in the disease.
In a recent review, scientists noted that oral bacteria — especially those related to periodontitis — could either affect the brain directly via “infection of the central nervous system,” or indirectly by inducing “chronic systemic inflammation” that reaches the brain.
