A model has accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2003, the latest in a string of allegations against the rapper and businessman. Crystal McKinney said in a lawsuit that Mr Combs invited her to his New York studio and plied her with alcohol and marijuana until she became intoxicated. He then forced her to perform oral sex, she said. BBC News has asked representatives of Mr Combs for comment. UCLA police chief removed after campus Gaza melee

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has temporarily removed its chief of police as it probes his officers' response to a violent melee on campus earlier this month.

UCLA Police Chief John Thomas has been reassigned and will be replaced by UCLA Capt Gawin Gibson.

The campus police waited more than two hours to break up a fight that started when masked counterprotesters assaulted a pro-Palestinian student encampment. The response at the top university led to intense criticism, including from the California governor's office, which called the "limited and delayed" police intervention "unacceptable". Mr Thomas was reassigned on Tuesday "pending an examination of our security processes," Mary Osako, UCLA vice chancellor for strategic communications, said in a brief statement provided to BBC News. The decision to replace him was made by Rick Braziel, the vice chancellor leading the newly created Office of Campus Safety.

A judge has questioned how Donald Trump could have overlooked sensitive documents that turned up in his bedroom after the FBI searched the former US president’s Florida home. The files were found in his private quarters months after federal agents discovered over 100 classified records as they executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach in the summer of 2022. The judge also noted the prosecution’s belief that Mr Trump was “likely instructing his agents to avoid the surveillance cameras” at the golf club. He denies 40 federal charges of unlawful retention of national defence information. His co-defendants, aide Walt Nauta and former employee Carlos de Oliveira, have also pleaded not guilty.

Nineteen children and two teachers were shot when an 18-year-old gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School, with police taking more than an hour to stop him. Multiple lawsuits were filed against Uvalde's police and local officials over what the Justice Department has described as a chaotic and disorganised response. US Embassy Rejects $18.6M Congestion Fees, Cites Immunity

The US embassy in London has refused to pay over USD 18.6 million in unpaid congestion fees, claiming diplomatic immunity from the fines, CNN reported, citing Transport for London (TfL), which manages the city's extensive transport

network.

The congestion charge, introduced in 2003 to reduce traffic and pollution in central London, requires drivers within the zone to pay a USD 19 daily fee between 7 am and 6 pm on weekdays and 12 pm and 6 pm on weekends.

TfL said that it will pursue all unpaid fees and is "pushing for the matter to be taken up at the International Court of Justice." "In accordance with international law as reflected in the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, our position is that the congestion charge is a tax from which diplomatic missions are exempt," a US embassy spokesperson said, CNN reported.

"Our long-standing position is shared by many other diplomatic missions in London," the spokesperson added. However, TfL insisted that in an agreement with the UK government, London's congestion charge constitutes a service and not tax. "This means that diplomats are not exempt from paying it," it stated. It has also politely declared there to be a 'stubborn minority' of embassies that do not pay the charge, despite "representations through diplomatic channels," and posted a lengthy list of offenders.

Biden Opposes Unilateral Palestinian State Recognition: White House

Washington: The White House said Wednesday that President Joe Biden opposes "unilateral recognition" of a Palestinian state, after recent moves by Spain, Ireland and Norway to normalize relations.

A tornado killed multiple people in a small Iowa town as powerful storms swept through the Midwest. Homes and businesses in Greenfield were destroyed, cars smashed and debris strewn across the landscape. Iowa police confirmed the fatalities at a news briefing on Tuesday night, but were unable to say how many. Nebraska, Illinois and Wisconsin were also hit by tornadoes, heavy rain and power cuts.

US claims Russia likely launched space weapon into orbit

Washington: (IANS/DPA) The US has claimed that Russia launched what is likely a space weapon capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit, US Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder announced.

Ryder added that the launch took place on May 16, and the Russian satellite is now in the same orbit as a US government satellite. When asked whether the Russian satellite threatened the US satellite, Ryder said: "Well, it's a space defence weapon in the same orbit as a US government satellite."

American UN representative Robert Wood had previously expressed views similar to Ryder's.

The Pentagon stated that it is not the first time Russia has launched such space weapons, referring to 2019 and 2022.

Lawmakers in the US state of Louisiana have advanced a bill that would restrict two drugs commonly used to perform an abortion.The bill, which was approved on Tuesday by the state’s lower chamber, would reclassify mifespristone and misoprostol as controlled substances.

They would carry fines and potential jail time for unauthorised possession. The bill will need to be passed by the state Senate and signed by the Republican governor before it can become law.

Abortion advocates fear it could serve as a template for other states to crack down on the mostused method of abortion in the United States.

Amnesty Chief: Pakistan Must Reverse Current Policies

Karachi: Military courts in Pakistan should not try more than 100 people for their alleged role in attacks on army installations during the riots that followed former premier Imran Khan's arrest on May 9 last year, the chief of Amnesty International has said, urging the government to uphold its international obligations.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights clearly state that civilians should not be tried by military courts, Amnesty International's Secretary General Dr Agnes Callamard said. The Amnesty chief saying that although military trials for civilians are a "no-no" under international law, "sadly it has happened throughout Pakistan's political history… [and] is not a novelty."

Ireland, Norway and Spain to recognise Palestinian state

Ireland, Norway, and Spain have announced they will formally recognise a Palestinian state from 28 May.

Spain and Ireland said the decision was not against Israel nor in favour of Hamas, but rather in support of peace.

Israel reacted angrily, warning the move would mean more instability in the region and recalling its ambassadors to all three countries.

Both Hamas and its rival, the Palestinian Authority, have welcomed the recognition.

Crisis-hit university students ordered to leave UK

Nigerian students have been thrown off university courses and ordered to leave the UK after a currency crisis left them struggling to pay tuition fees on time. Teesside University students were blocked from their studies and reported to the Home Office after the value of Nigeria's naira plummeted, wiping out their savings.

UN Stops Rafah Food Aid Amid Shortages, Conflict

Food distribution in the southern Gaza city of Rafah has been suspended due to a lack of supplies and insecurity, the UN says. US Sending Indian Astronaut to ISS by Year-End: Envoy

Mumbai: US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti has said America will send an Indian astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of this year. The NISAR project, a joint Earth-observing mission between US space agency NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is also likely to be launched by the end of the year, Garcetti said on Wednesday.

"We are going to put an Indian astronaut into the International Space Station this year," he said. "We promised when PM (Narendra) Modi came (to the US in 2023) that by the end of this year, we will do this and our mission is still on track to be able to go in space this year," he said.

"Tight Slap To Opposition": PM Modi On Calcutta High Court's OBC Ruling

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called the Calcutta High Court decision of striking down the OBC status granted to "77 classes" in West Bengal since 2010 a "tight slap" to the opposition and alleged that the INDIA bloc's "obsession with appeasement" has crossed every limit. The Calcutta High Court, in its verdict on Wednesday, noted that "religion indeed appears to have been the sole criterion" for declaring these classes as OBCs.

Year Around Taiwan As 'Punishment'

China held its most expansive military drills in a year around Taiwan, just days after Lai Ching-te took over as the island's new president.

He also pointed out that the government’s response in handling the Covid pandemic, the China crisis, and India’s stance on Russia and Ukraine were in the best interest of India and its citizens.

Airline to 'better manage' flights with AI use

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) at easyJet's new control centre has allowed its operations teams to better manage flights, the airline said. Personnel based at the integrated control centre near Luton Airport, Bedfordshire, have access to Jetstream, a generative AI tool. It helps them solve issues for pilots and crews on the ground more quickly, easyJet said.

The airline's chief executive, Johan Lundgren, said the new facilities came just in time for summer.

The AI would predict standby crew requirements and recommend the best crew options for each operation, it was claimed. More than 250 staff work in the control centre, managing easyJet's daily programme of about 2,000 flights.

Their responsibilities included planning routes, allocating pilots and cabin crew, arranging aircraft maintenance and passenger communications. Mr Lundgren said staff could now benefit from a "modern and bespoke" hub to work from.

"At easyJet, we saw the potential early on for data to improve customer experience and operational efficiency which could help us provide a better flying experience for our customers, crew and pilots," he said. "We continue to invest in and deepen our knowledge and use of AI," Mr Lundgren added.

“As a nation, we must grow for today and leapfrog for tomorrow to realise our goals and aspirations,” he said.

Food regulator finds no trace of ethylene oxide in Indian spices

New Delhi: (IANS) Amid the global furore over the alleged presence of a "cancer-causing substance" in certain spices from India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has cleared more than a dozen samples of spices from MDH and Everest brands. According to the analysis report, the

extensive testing found no traces of ethylene oxide (ETO) in the samples collected from several states.

The rigorous process of testing for ethylene oxide was performed at NABLaccredited laboratories notified by the FSSAI.

The food regulator also picked up 300 spice samples of other brands for testing and found "no presence of ETO".

The testing process began after several countries started monitoring spice products manufactured by Indian spice giants MDH and Everest over the alleged presence of a ‘cancercausing’ agent. Food regulators in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand warned against using certain products from MDH and Everest over the presence of ethylene oxide at " levels exceeding the permissible limit".

To mitigate this issue, the forest department has installed 12 towers equipped with AI cameras along the Madukkarai tracks. These cameras, utilizing thermal and visible light imaging, detect elephants within 100 feet of the tracks and promptly alert forest and railway officials. The system, resembling those used by the Indian Army, aims to prevent collisions by guiding elephants away and slowing down trains. At a cost of 72.4 million rupees, the project was launched in February and has already detected

nearly 400 instances of elephants approaching tracks, preventing potential accidents.

The previous method of manual patrols had limitations, making technological intervention crucial. This AI system not only alerts officials about elephants but also other animals nearing the tracks. How do you choose a role from the plethora of offers that come your way?

I don’t look at the length of the role; I look at the character’s importance in the subject. If the character wasn’t there, would the story move forward? I had two releases, Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond and Murder in Mahim, where I play two distinct characters. In Ranneeti, I play a suave and overpowering ISI Chief. In Murder in Mahim, my character Peter Fernandes [modelled on the author] is subdued, but he has tremendous [inner] strength. In one, you get to see power, in the other, strength. I have never played such a low-key character. When I play Peter, I notice the character’s body language, the walk, the way he talks and looks. If a character forces me to break my mould and not carry my traits forward, it’s a win-win.

You say that you look at your character’s importance when choosing projects. But so often, talented actors are wasted in films, like you were in Fighter.

It’s a pain an actor has to go through. Sometimes, you have to do it out of respect and affection for someone. I have done films with Siddharth [Anand] like War (2019) and Pathaan (2023). He didn’t ask me, he simply said that I was his lucky mascot and wanted me in his film. Sometimes, it hurts, because while we may imagine a story in a certain way, it doesn’t pan out accordingly. The only problem is when other filmmakers feel that since I have done a special appearance in Siddharth’s film, I’ll do it for everyone. It’s a risk, but you have to find a way around it.

Taken To Arvind Kejriwal's Home As Cops Probe Assault Charge

New Delhi: The controversy over Swati Maliwal's allegations against Arvind Kejriwal's aide - Bibhav Kumar - escalated sharply Friday afternoon after a police team took the Aam Aadmi Party MP to the Delhi Chief Minister's residence in the city's Civil Lines area, where the alleged assault took place.

Ms Maliwal was taken to the house to 're-create the crime scene', sources said. Earlier a Delhi Police team, accompanied by five forensic scientists, had visited the house. The four-member team was led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Anjitha Chepyala.

On Thursday, in her first public comment on this row, Ms Maliwal called for action against those who allegedly attacked her, and wrote on X, "The last few days have been very difficult..."

The forensic team, which first came with the cops, returned with Ms Maliwal. Man Sentenced For Role In Sex Trafficking Operation At Motel Owned By Indian American Businessman

FRESNO, CA— Roy Gene Drees, 48, from Bakersfield, was sentenced to four years in prison today for using interstate commerce facilities to aid a racketeering enterprise, announced U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.

According to court documents, Jatin Bhakta, 29, purchased the Desert Star Motel at 516 South Union Avenue in Bakersfield in 2015.

Between 2015 and late 2020, the Bakersfield Police Department made numerous prostitution-related arrests and child rescues at the motel. Drees lived and worked at the motel until a federal search warrant was executed on January 22, 2021, during which 15 prostitutes, three pimps, Drees, and Bhakta were found at the location. Drees actively facilitated the prostitution operations by making

phone calls, sending text messages, providing transportation, and arranging accommodations.

One pimp, Darnell Edwards, who

had coerced two minor females into prostitution at the Desert Star, was sentenced to 19 years and seven months in federal prison on May 1, 2023.

Their Gurgaon-based company, Statiq, now operates a nationwide network of charging stations for electric cars, buses, trucks, and three-wheelers. The company has raised $27.5 million from investors and expects to post its first operating profit in the next financial year.

Chicago Man Arrested For Scam Operation In Texas

A Bolingbrook man was arrested by Texas police for stealing thousands of dollars through scamming tactics. The Longview Police Department reported that Muhammad Muzammil, 23, scammed a local victim out of a “significant amount of money.” Muzammil was charged with one count of felony theft of property valued between $30,000 and $150,000.

British-Swedish pharma giant AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, made in collaboration with Oxford University has been found to raise the risk of vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) -- a rare but fatal blood clotting disorder, claimed researchers on Thursday.

While not new, VITT emerged as a new disease following adenovirus vector-based OxfordAstraZeneca vaccine -- sold as Covishield in India and Vaxzevria in Europe -- at the height of the Covid pandemic in 2021.

"An unusually dangerous blood autoantibody directed against a protein termed platelet factor 4 (or PF4)" was found as the reason for VITT.

In separate research in 2023, scientists from Canada, North America, Germany and Italy described a virtually identical disorder with the same PF4 antibody that was fatal in some cases after natural adenovirus (common cold) infection.

Now in a new research, Flinders University in Australia and other international experts found that the PF4 antibodies in both adenovirus infection-associated VITT and classic adenoviral vector VITT share identical molecular fingerprints or signatures.

"Indeed, the pathways of lethal antibody production in these disorders must be virtually identical and have similar genetic risk factors,” said Professor Tom Gordon from Flinders

The researcher noted that the "findings have the important clinical implication that lessons learned from VITT are applicable to rare cases of blood clotting after adenovirus (a common cold) infections, as well as having implications for vaccine development".

The same team had in a 2022 study "cracked the molecular code of the PF4 antibody and identified a genetic risk factor".

Their new findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, also have important implications for improving vaccine safety.

The research comes after AstraZeneca "accepted, in a legal document submitted to the High Court in February, that its Covid vaccine 'can, in very rare cases, cause Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Syndrome (TTS)'."

TTS is a rare side effect that can cause people to have blood clots and a low blood platelet count. It has been linked to the death of at least 81 people in the UK as well as hundreds of serious injuries.

The company has also voluntarily withdrawn "marketing authorisation" of its Covid vaccine from Europe and other global markets.

After seven years, WHO updates antibiotic-resistant bacteria list

After a gap of seven years, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday released its updated list of antibioticresistant bacteria, which also provides guidance on the development of new and necessary treatments to curb the rising spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). During AMR infections, driven majorly by the misuse and overuse of antimicrobials, bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to medicines. It majorly affects the treatment of high-burden infections, such as tuberculosis, leading to severe illness and increased mortality rates.

The Bacterial Priority Pathogens List (BPPL) 2024 features 15 families of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are grouped into critical, high, and medium categories for prioritisation.

The BPPL 2024 also emphasises the need for a comprehensive public health approach to addressing AMR, including universal access to quality and affordable measures for prevention, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment of infections.

NYPD Drones To Respond To 911 Calls Starting Soon

NEW YORK, NY- New York City is adding “drones” to its ranks of first responders.

Drones soon will fly to 911 calls alongside NYPD officers in five police precincts, including one covering Central Park, said Kaz Daughtry, the department’s chief of operations. “The plan to be rolled out in the coming months is to deploy these drones in response to certain 911 calls of service,” he said during testimony in Congress this week on unmanned aerial systems.

Daughtry only gave broad strokes details about the upcoming pilot program.

He said five as-yet-unspecified NYPD precincts — three in Brooklyn, one in The Bronx, and, finally, the Central Park precinct — will have their roofs retrofitted to house two drone platforms.

The drones’ pilots, however, will remotely steer them from the NYPD’s Lower Manhattan headquarters and provide live information to responding officers, he said.

The first responder program is only the city’s latest drone project under Mayor Eric Adams, a self-professed technophile who has brushed off myriad concerns about the technology.

Dr. Modi graduated from Kasturba Medical College Manipal in 1966 and had a distinguished career spanning 58 years. He specialized in Internal Medicine and Pathology, serving the Skokie, IL community with dedication and compassion. Dr. Modi’s love for adventure was matched only by his love for his community. As a devoted follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his principles of non-violence, he established the Gandhi Committee to erect Skokie’s first Gandhi statue on October 2, 2004. He had an innate ability to connect with people, making everyone feel seen and valued.

On May 19, 2024, Chicago's Ashyana Banquets hosted an extraordinary Mother’s Day celebration, organized by the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chicago and Desi Junction. The evening’s program commenced with humorous and warm introductions highlighting the unique personalities of FIA leaders: Chairman Sunil Shah, Vice-Chairman Neil Khot, President Pratibha Jairath, and past President Vinita Gulabani. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated its policy to clarify fields qualifying for a streamlined green card process under Schedule A, Group II. This process targets individuals with “exceptional ability” in STEM fields, broadening the definition of “science or art.”

Expanded Definition of “Science or Art”

The updated policy now includes any field in which colleges and universities commonly offer degrees, allowing a wider range of STEM professionals to qualify for the Schedule A process.

Eligibility Criteria

Exceptional STEM Talent: The high standards for “exceptional ability” remain. Applicants must demonstrate international recognition and acclaim in their field.

Expanded Fields: Degrees in a broader array of STEM disciplines now qualify. Evidence of Exceptional Ability Applicants must meet at least two of the following seven criteria: International Recognition: Awards, prizes, or recognition from reputable international bodies.

Membership in Elite Organizations: Admission to exclusive professional organizations requiring high achievement.
