Pilloried as a ‘Hindutva hardliner’, a ‘divisive’, ‘polarizing figure’, especially because of the 2002 riots under his own rule in his home state, Modi has in a way taken a sweet revenge as he savors the phenomenal poll results, his own glory and the finest-ever performance of the BJP in more than three decades of its existence. At the height of a gruelling campaign, Modi had said in an interview that he sensed a very strong antiincumbency wave against the 10-year Congress rule, marked by massive corruption and seemingly dysfunctional government. As he traveled across this country of sub-continental size and bewildering diversity, he saw "an equally strong wave for the BJP and its NDA partners", a yearning for change, for a "stable", performing government in New Delhi. To a large extent, his own carefully crafted image of a "strong and decisive" leader found resonance across the country and has no doubt played a role that is reflected in the poll results. In the 13 years he has been at the helm of affairs in Gujarat, Modi has built an image of a leader who delivers, someone who is interested in results. In the last few years, when the Manmohan Singh government was ridiculed for being caught in a "policy paralysis" Modi seized the opportunity and conveyed a vision of decisive government and development. And this he made the main plank of his electoral campaign that touched a chord, an instant connect, especially with the young, first- time voters and the country's burgeoning middle class. As one of his biographers, Nirendra Dev, says, the

middle class perceives Modi more as someone who "functions like a modern day CEO laying emphasis on the outcome and often allegedly putting the rules and normal norms in the backburner". This was facilitated by an aggressive use of technology and media, and well supported by the Sangh Parivar whose members pressed its cadres to canvass for the BJP. In contrast, the campaign of the Congress led by its undeclared prime ministerial nominee, vice president Rahul Gandhi, was uninspiring. Opposition leaders and independent observers, however, say that though Modi talked about development, the party indulged in some social engineering in states like Uttar Pradesh, played the backward caste and communal cards. But there are specific and deep social changes that seem to have helped the so-called Modi wave. Increased urbanization, inter-regional migration and spread of communication have bridged the rural-urban divide in voting behavior. The country's travel from a state-run economy to one run more by private capital has led to a situation where aspirations are rising a lot faster than improvements on the ground and a lot of angst, among the young.

The statistics show there is overwhelming support for this new health care reform initiative (Obamacare): 4Eight million Americans have signed up for private insurance through the health insurance marketplace. 435% of those who have signed up are under the age of 35. 4313,000 Illinoisans have got covered (114,000 through the marketplace and 199,000 through Medicaid) 45.6 million Illinoisans can no longer be denied coverage because they have preexisting conditions 41,843 consumers have enrolled in ACA at Asian Human Services with assistance of navigators. These statistics didn’t include people who signed up for health insurance outside the Marketplace. Not only the numbers, but numerous life stories of consumers who are covered under this law testify the impact this controversial legislation has on uninsured/ underinsured people without protection medically and financially in meeting their health needs. HICAGO -- Two men are facing charges after the police seized 4,000 packs of illegal cigarettes and $280,000 in cash at a gas station in the North Lawndale neighborhood on May 8. After receiving a tip that a business was selling cigarettes without state and Cook County tax stamps, the police responded to a gas station in the 3800 block of W. Roosevelt Road. During the investigation, officers made numerous cigarette purchases from the gas station and found they didn’t have a county tax stamp. The smokes originated from Illinois and Missouri. Officers were able to determine through surveillance that the cigarettes

were being transported to the store by Nasser Abdullah, 33, of Bridgeview, who was also storing large quantities of them in his garage. The police seized a total of 3,790 packs of unstamped cigarettes and $287,778 in cash during the investigation. Abdullah was charged with one felony count of possession of more than 1,000 packs of contraband cigarettes. He also faces potential business licensing fines, totaling nearly $1.9 million. Meanwhile, a co-worker, Quaiti Ali, 22, also of Bridgeview, was charged with a municipal ordinance for selling cigarettes without the proper stamp. Abdullah was in bond court on May 8 and Ali is scheduled to appear on May 29.

HICAGO -- If Narendra Modi finally decides to accept President Barak Obama’s invitation and visits the US, part of the credit should go to Chicago’s community leader Dr Bharat Barai, a famed doctor of oncology and former chairman of the Medical Licensing Board of Indiana. Dr Barai, who had undertaken a two-week trip to India last month to campaign for Modi in the just-concluded Lok Sabha elections, last week again met Modi who led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a landslide victory and was to be sworn as India’s next Prime Minister on may 26. The citation of the award read: “This honor is in recognition of the international recognition you have brought to UIC through your exceptional research on the neurobiology of mood disorders and suicide. Your work has led to original discoveries by elucidating the molecular and cellular nature of abnormalities associated with the pathophysiology of mood disorders and suicide”. Prof Pandey received the medal for this award at a ceremony of the UIC College of Medicine held on May 9 at the UIC Pavilion. Dr. Pandey has conducted extensive research aimed at understanding the neurobiology of depression and suicide,

Dr. Pandey has also been investigating the role of stress hormones and immune factors in suicide. He has shown that the mechanism by which levels of stress hormones are regulated is compromised in the brain of suicide victims. He has also shown that those chemicals which regulate the immune function are abnormally expressed in the brain of suicide victims. Dr. Pandey is currently Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Mood Disorders and Suicide Research at the College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago.

HICAGO (IL) -- The Niles police department is again warning residents not to send money to callers who claim to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Phone scams have been reported across the country involving callers who tell residents they owe money to the IRS and could face arrest or deportation if they do not pay. The callers then ask that the money be sent to them via pre-paid debit cards or a wire transfer. According to the Niles Police Department Crime Prevention Unit, the real IRS contacts citizens first by mail regarding unpaid taxes and never asks for debit or credit card numbers over the phone. “If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and uses threatening language if you don’t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn’t the IRS calling,” a police press release said. In November, a 61-year-old Niles man thought he was paying back taxes when he transferred nearly $5,000 to a caller representing the IRS — but police said he was the victim of a phone scam. Similar incidents were reported in unincorporated Maine Township last year as well, the victims all of Indian descent. The callers, also claiming to be with the IRS, spoke to the victims in their native languages and instructed them to purchase prepaid debit cards and transfer money. The police say callers who commit this type of fraud may use fake IRS badge numbers, know the last four digits of the victim’s Social Security Number, make caller ID information appear as if the IRS is calling, send bogus emails, or call back a second time claiming to be law enforcement. The Niles police advise residents who are contacted by someone claiming to be with the IRS to contact the IRS directly at 800-366-4844 to confirm the validity of the call.

According to a recent study, the more a person watches porn, the more likely he/she is in a state of accepting extra-marital affairs. “If pornography consumption leads to more positive extra-marital sex attitudes as the results suggest, porn may be a contributing factor in some divorces via extramarital sex behavior,” the researchers emphasized. To prove their point, researchers used data from 551 married adults collected by the General Social Survey in the US. Participants were asked questions like, “Have you seen an Xrated movie in the last year?” and “What is your opinion about a

married person having sexual relations with someone other than the marriage partner?” “Porn consumption was associated with more positive subsequent extra-marital sex attitudes,”
