deep freeze spread from the United States Midwest to the East and South, setting record low temperatures from Boston to Birmingham, and leaves atleast 21 people dead, authorities said. The Midwest and the East experienced temperatures colder than several parts of Antarctica.
North Texas confirms 20 flu deaths WASHINGTON: Health officials confirmed at least 20 people have died from flu, mostly H1N1 influenza, in north Texas this season, media reported on January 6. The tally was made by health departments in Dallas county, Denton county and Tarrant county, all in north Texas, Xinhua quoted local media KHOU as saying in a report. Hospitals confirm eight deaths in Dallas county, and another nine positive flu cases have been logged by the medical examiner’s office. Denton county reported two deaths. Tarrant county has had one death linked to the flu. All of the Dallas victims were adults while a child was among the two victims in Denton. Hospitals across north Texas have been seeing a increasing number of patients with flu-related cases. — IANS

nited States President Barack Obama stepped up pressure on the Congress to extend unemployment benefits by approving the bill which has just cleared procedural hurdle in the Senate. Speaking at an event at the White House on January 7, Obama said the legislation would restore benefits to millions of people who have been struggling to cope with the “aftermath of the worst economic
crisis in generations”, Xinhua reported. “So letting unemployment insurance expire for millions of Americans is wrong. Congress should make things right. I am very appreciative that they’re are on their way to doing just that,” said Obama. “We’ve got to get this across the finish line without obstruction or delay, and we need the House of Representatives to be able to vote for it as well. And that’s the bottom line,” he added.
Almost 3,400 flights were delayed till January 7, according to a website, while 2,400 flights were cancelled. The bulk of the cancelled flights were in Cleveland, Chicago, Indianapolis and Buffalo in New York. About 500 rail passengers were stranded on January 7 on board three Amtrak trains stuck in drifting snow near Chicago in northern Illinois and were without food for long periods of time.

ndia on January 5 joined the select league of space-faring nations with indigenous cryogenic engine technology, successfully launching its rocket that put a communication satellite in orbit. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh termed it as “yet another important step”. The successful launch of India’s heavier rocket — the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-D5 (GSLV-D5) — not only means the indigenous cryogenic engine has performed well but would also pave way for sizeable savings for the country in future launch costs. It also opens up a window to earn foreign exchange from launching heavier foreign satellites. The Indian space scientists’ toil of around two decades in conceiving the more efficient cryogenic engine technology, which provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant, spending around `4 billion has come to fruition with the delivery of the GSAT-14 in the outer space.
AAP office attacked in Ghaziabad GHAZIABAD: Around 40 men said to be from a Hindu group attacked the AAP office here on January 8, apparently to protest a statement on Kashmir made by party leader Prashant Bhushan, witnesses said. The attackers barged into the Aam Aadmi Party office at Kaushambi, stoned it heavily shattering windows, broke flower pots and abused AAP leaders, an AAP leader named Dilip Pandey, present at the site told IANS. Before fleeing after some 20 minutes, the attackers threatened to attack AAP leaders in the future too. Pandey said they were from a group called Hindu Raksha Dal. “All our volunteers were asked to get inside (the office) when the attack took place,” Pandey said, adding the attackers raised slogans against a particular community. Asked if the arson was a reaction to Bhushan’s comments on army deployment in the Kashmir Valley from which the AAP has distanced itself, Pandey said: “It could be.” The attackers, in their 20s and 30s, came in four or five cars. The AAP office at Kaushambi is located not far from the personal residence of AAP founder leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

meeting of some Congress leaders on January 7 took a lot of people by surprise when Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, sister of party vice president Rahul Gandhi, also turned up. A party leader would only say that the meeting was held to discuss the tour programs of Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Speaking to reporters, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, “Even if she is not seen taking part in active politics, she is an active member of the Indian National Congress.” “She has her own views on political issues and talks to party workers from time to time. “If on some issue she has talked to some leaders, what is there to be surprised about? What is new in this?” Dwivedi said. A Congress leader, not wishing to be identified, told IANS that Priyanka Vadra joined the meeting towards the end. The meeting was held at Rahul Gandhi’s 12 Tughlak
Lane residence. It was not clear if Rahul Gandhi was present there. Priyanka has been looking after the constituencies of her brother Rahul (Amethi) and mother Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli). Her presence created a buzz in party circles as the news spread fast to the party headquarters at 24 Akbar Road. Many speculated if Priyanka Vadra would paly an active role in the campaign for the April-May general elections that is likely to be led by R a h u l Gandhi.
Muzaffarnagar: officials refuse to acquit Muslim leaders IANS, LUCKNOW

he Muzaffarnagar district administration has refused to withdraw cases against Muslim leaders named in riots cases, home department officials said on January 8. Sources said Muzaffarnagar District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma, in a report signed by the district police chief and investigating officer, against the accused, including Bahutold the Uttar Pradesh government jan Samaj Party parliamentarian that any move to withdraw cases Qadir Rana, was “not tenable”.
In response to a letter from special secretary (Law) Rangnath Pandey on plausibility and probability of

Reports of the government move have drawn flak from the opposition parties and they have accused the Akhilesh Yadav Government of trying to appease the minorities and imperilling the judicial process.
CAG audit of telecos may open Pandora’s box IANS, NEW DELHI

he Delhi High Court ruling that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) can look into the accounts of the private telecom firms because exchequer revenue is involved in it, may open a Pandora’s box and lead to similar demands for other sectors, although that may not be the intent or spirit behind the judgment, analysts and industry associations fear.
“We believe the CAG was constituted to be answerable to Parliament only in respect of businesses which are owned by the government,” said Sidharth Birla, president of industry lobby FICCI. “Therefore, to my mind, there is no place for CAG interfering into a private company’s books,” he said. The Delhi High Court ruled on January 6 that the CAG can look into the receipts of the private telecom firms as they have revenue sharing arrangements with the gov-
ernment. Ankita Somani, research analyst at Angel Broking, said the judgment could have wider impact on other sectors as all companies’ revenues are linked to the Consolidated Fund. “Telecom companies like other companies are already being audited by independent auditors. So, CAG will be doing the same thing,” Somani told IANS. However, some analysts argue that the judgment need not be seen as an interference in the functioning of the private telecom firms.

The sting in Manmohan’s ‘tale’ Manmohan Singh goes belligerent against Narendra Modi in his purportedly last press conference as the prime minister by saying it would be “disastrous” to have Modi as PM AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
T
he only occasion when the prime minister perked up during his otherwise somewhat insipid press conference was when he castigated Narendra Modi in uncharacteristically abrasive terms, thereby giving the latter a taste of his own bitter medicine. While doing so, Manmohan Singh virtually recalled the description by media personnel of the Gujarat chief minister as a “mass murderer” for his role during the 2002 riots. The prime minister’s biting observation - that if being “strong” meant “presiding over the mass massacre of innocent citizens”, it wasn’t the kind of strength which he wanted - was yet another example of his combativeness. The context of Manmohan Singh’s comment was a question on the perception of him as a weak PM. It is evident that it is an image which disturbs him more than anything else. It may be recalled that when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, L.K. Advani, used to raise this question of weakness before the 2009 general election, the prime minister responded by saying that he was not someone who
cowered in a corner, as Advani did, while the saffron cadres demolished a protected monument. Following the jeering criticism, Advani had refrained from levelling the accusation again. Now, faced with the latest invective against its poster-boy, the BJP rolled out its big guns — Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad and others — to return the prime minister’s fire. Jaitley’s view is that Manmohan Singh lowered the dignity of the prime minister’s office by saying that it will be “disastrous” for the country if Modi becomes the prime minister. hen we talk of the food at an upscale restaurant we invariably talk of the chef behind it. But despite most of us finding the array of food available in Delhi’s old quarters lip-smacking, few of us remember the ‘bawarchis’, or the traditional cooks, behind the culinary magic. Purani Dilli, as the area is known, is still home to some of the indigenous Mughal-era bawarchis and many dishes’ origins can be traced to this place. Despite that, the Old Delhi cooks remain anonymous to food lovers as their toque and apron-wearing counterparts in five-star hotels and expensive fine dining restaurants hog all the limelight. No fancy oven, no proper kitchen, the bawarchis of Old Delhi are seemingly caught in a time warp and usually cook on the roadside using the traditional wood fuel. Although some of them have started using gas stoves, paucity of LPG cylinders makes them use firewood very often. They cook only on order. Mohalla Qabristan near Turkman

Over the years, different variations of qorma have been thrown up such as white qorma and green qorma. Similarly, while taftaan, rumali roti and paratha are common, disco roti, maina and bulbul rotis are little known. It is difficult to trace the origin of these variations. “I don’t know who invented these dishes but they are quite popular now. We prepare these items only on order. But please don’t ask me about their recipes. I won’t tell you,” says Mohamed Saleem, 60, another bawarchi. “There are a lot of people nowadays who are cooking food. But they are newcomers and our customers always come to us for our unique taste,” Zaamin, an old bawarchi.

f a single gene is not functioning properly, insulin is not released into the bloodstream to regulate blood sugar levels — leading to type 2 diabetes, claims a scientist of Indian origin. A research team led by Bellur S. Prabhakar, professor and head of microbiology and immunology at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, found that dysfunction in a single gene called MADD in mice causes fasting hyperglycemia — one of the major symptoms of type 2 diabetes. In a healthy person, beta cells in the pancreas secrete the hormone
mutation in MADD was strongly associated with type 2 diabetes. People with this mutation had high blood glucose and problems of insulin secretion — the hallmarks of type 2 diabetes,” said Prabhakar. To study the role of MADD in diabetes, Prabhakar and his team developed a mouse model in which the MADD gene was deleted from the insulin-producing beta cells. All such mice had elevated blood glucose levels, which the researchers found was due to insufficient release of insulin. “We didn’t see any insulin resistance in

India, Saudi ink ‘landmark’ accord NEW DELHI: India and Saudi Arabia on January 2 inked a “landmark” agreement on protection of the rights of domestic Indian workers in the kingdom and agreed to work out another accord to streamline ties between employers and the 2.8 million Indian workers in that country. The Agreement on Labor Cooperation for Domestic Service Workers Recruitment was signed by Indian Overseas Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and visiting Saudi Arabian Labor Minister Adel bin Mohammed Fakeih here. Ravi said the agreement on domestic workers’ protection would help streamline the Labor market. “This will go a long way in protecting the interests of workers..., and for that the Standard Employment Contract should also be finalized at the earliest,” he said. The Standard Employment Contract would seek to govern the relations between the employer and the
employee by ensuring agreed wage, proper working hours, paid holidays, dispute settlement mechanism, the minister said. Ravi said he wanted to thank the Saudi minister and the kingdom for hosting Indian workers “who have contributed to the economic development of Saudi Arabia and continue to be one of the most disciplined, law abiding, and hard working community”. He also thanked the Saudi government for “its humanitarian approach while adopting the Nitaqat program”, and said most of the Indians have corrected their work status. — IANS

Jasprit Singh, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at University of Michigan, has suggested that smartphones can enhance mindfulness, help users stay attentive and achieve particular goals while at work or home. “In our culture today, we often don’t have scarcity of food or gadgets or knowledge. The scarcity has shifted to mindfulness,” said Singh in a
release issued by University of Michigan. “Humans tend to forget, especially under stress. But smartphones don’t operate that way,” he added. During one of his classes, Singh challenged his students to d e s i g n mobile apps to help users set and meet ‘well-
ness’ milestones. The apps his team developed focused on delivering messages to users at a set time or place. An app named ‘Balance’, developed for senior citizens, offers easy and routine access to short exercise videos that could improve coordination and prevent falls. ‘WeeAddition’ app guides women through pregnancy while ‘Joggle’ is a collaborative art, poetry and music app that could encourage creativity. Another app named ‘College Granny’ is aimed to help students balance studying, socializing and develop healthy habits. The users can set the app to remind them at appropriate times to, say, go to sleep, take break from reading, or quit after a particular number of drinks at a bar, said the release. “The goal of this course was to bring harmony between what we know and what we do,” Singh added.

The cargo includes plastic sheeting for shelter, blankets and mosquito nets that will be distributed in partnership with UN agencies among people who were forced to flee their homes in Juba and Awerial.
“Children caught up in the fighting are at a significant increased risk of violence, abuse and separation from their families,” the charity said in a statement released here. reform measures in the financial and insurance sectors due to lack of greater political support, Manmohan Singh said the decisions that have been made were already beginning to make an impact and India was re-emerging as an attractive investment decision. “I am confident you will see the evidence clearly in the next few months,” he asserted. On the education sector, the prime minister said the number of central universities in the country have gone up from 17 to 44 while the number of IITs and IIMs have doubled. NEW DELHI: The Indian diaspora was shaken by the brutal gangrape of a young woman on Dec 16, 2012, and upset over the continuing rapes taking place in the national capital and elsewhere that made the country appear unsafe for women, said members of the Indian diaspora here. It wants the government to take the strictest action against such crimes. Priti Lamba, who belongs to Toronto, Canada, and is here to attend the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), said the incident made the Indian diaspora in Toronto very angry. “When we heard about Damini (the
name given to the victim by the media ) we were very upset. All were upset. The way they raped her was very brutal. They (the accused) should get the strongest punishment,” said Lamba, who had migrated from Punjab to Canada in 1981 and is the vice president of Association of Women of India in Canada (AWIC) that works among Indian women in Canada. “There was also another rape case we learnt about after that. Reunion Island Indians connect with India NEW DELHI: French is their mother tongue and they have been born and lived for four generations far away from India, but a thirst to know more about the land where their forefathers came from draws them to India regularly. Armoudom Lena, an orthodontist from Reunion Islan, is heading the Indian delegation at the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the largest gathering of Indian diaspora that opened here on January 7. Reunion Island is a small French island in the Indian Ocean, near Mauri-

Salman Khan does it again! MUMBAI: That Salman Khan has a heart of gold is widely known. He proved it once again. While leaving an event at Bandra’s Mehboob Studio recently, the star spotted a man and his wheel-chair bound son, looking for help. The 48-year-old actor enquired about their troubles. The man, Kailash Chandanshiv, 45, told the star that he hails from Belapur and is in the city to seek treatment for his 14-year-old son Vijay, who is unable to walk because of a medical condition. Immediately, Salman took out a piece of paper and wrote down a doctor’s number, asking Kailash to contact him. He then told Kailash that all the expenses will be borne by him. The number was of doctor Sandeep Chopra, who is acting as a consultant to Salman Khan’s Being Human Foundation. “After meeting Vijay near Mehboob Studio, Salman immediately called me up and said that we need to take care of Vijay’s case on priority basis. We will ensure that financial and medical help is extended to them,” the doctor was quoted as saying.

MUMBAI: Dhoom:3, the latest instalment of Bollywood’s successful action adventure franchise, has grossed `501.35 crore ($83.56 million) worldwide since its release on December 20 last year. On January 6, its production banner, Yash Raj Films (YRF), issued a statement confirming the news. “Dhoom:3 continues to create history at both the Indian and overseas box office. It is now officially the first Indian film to cross `500 crore worldwide,” read the statement. According to the breakup of the gross box office collections, in India, the action adventure movie has grossed `.351.29 crore, while in the overseas market, it has collected `150.06 crore ($25.01 million). The collection totals `501.35 crore.

Shruti Haasan undergoes surgery HYDERABAD: Late on Jan 5, Shruti Haasan was admitted to a hospital after she complained of acute stomach pain. She later went through an appendicitis surgery. A source said that Shruti brought in the New Year with her dad, Kamal Haasan, in Chennai. “The next day, she flew to Hyderabad and shot from 6 am till evening. At 8 pm she felt uneasy during a press conference and was rushed to the hospital where she was told to undergo an appendectomy at the earliest.” Shruti called up her father, asking if she should fly back to Chennai or go to Mumbai but Kamal suggested she stays put and gets the appendicitis operated in Hyderabad itself. he debate on the bill for the formation of a separate Telangana state finally began in the Andhra Pradesh assembly on January 8, but the house was adjourned within few minutes amid strong protests by the YSR Congress Party. There was an uproar in the house when Tourism Minister Vatti Vasant Kumar initiated the debate, strongly opposing the bill for the bifurcation of the state. Opposing even the debate, Seemandhra legislators of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) raised slogans in support of a united Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP lawmakers, who surrounded the speaker's podium, tore copies of the bill and flung the pieces in the air. Amid utter pandemonium and shouting of slogans, Speaker N. Manohar adjourned the house till
January 9. When the house reassembled in the afternoon after two adjournments in the morning, Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy appealed to members to cooperate in conducting the debate. After his assurance that the government would provide information on issues mentioned in the bill, Seemandhra legislators of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) called off their protest. Speaker N. Manohar asked Vasant Kumar to initiate the debate. However, YSRCP members continued their protest demanding that the house first pass a resolution to appeal to the central government to keep the state united. Kerala adds women police stations THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, in his first meeting with police top brass, vowed to make the state a “Nirbhaya Kerala,” one where women have nothing to fear. Six new all-women police stations would be set up, he said. He said atrocities against women and children would be sternly dealt with. Chennithala was sworn in last week as part of the Congress high command’s decision to accommodate him within the state cabinet after he had served eight years as state party president. “The six police stations will come up in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Malapuram and Kannur districts. They will be opened March 1,” Chennithala told reporters on January 6. At present, the state has only one

pparently depressed over not getting films, young Telugu actor Uday Kiran committed suicide by hanging himself here on January 5 night, police said. Kiran, 33, is survived by his wife Vishita. Kiran, who acted in 19 films including three Tamil movies, ended his life in his flat at Srinagar colony around midnight. He was alone in the flat. Vishita, who had gone out for a family party, rushed to the flat after he did not respond to her mobile phone calls. A police officer quoted his wife and other family members as saying that he was in deep depression for the last few days. He refused to attend the birthday party of a relative in the city that night and sent his wife for the same. Kiran was depressed over not getting any new film since February last year. Family mem-
bers told police that he was in touch with a Tamil filmmaker and was waiting for his phone call on January 5. He became depressed when he did not get the call. Born January 26, 1980, Kiran began his film career with Telugu film Chitram, a romantic-drama in 2000. He had a meteoric rise in the industry as the first movie directed by Teja proved a hit. This was followed by Nuvvu Neenu and Manasantha Nuvve, which were also huge success. The charming hero with romantic image began to be called ‘hat-trick hero’. In 2001, he bagged Filmfare best actor award, youngest to bag the honor. After the initial success, Kiran was getting few films and faced a tough time in both professional and personal life.

‘Jihad Jane’ jailed for 10 years for terror plot BY A STAFF WRITER

5 0 - ye a r - o l d Pe n n s y l va n i a woman who liked to be called ‘Jihad Jane’ was sentenced to ten years in jail on January 6 after telling a federal judge she was ‘in a trance’ when she plotted to kill a Swedish artist. But Colleen LaRose said she had renounced terrorism since surrendering. “I don’t want to be in jihad (holy war) no more,” she told Judge Petrese Tucker in Philadelphia. LaRose, who had faced a life sentence, joined a 2009 conspiracy to target artist Lars Vilks because he had depicted Prophet Mohammed as a dog. Muslim extremists had offered $100,000 to anyone who killed Vilks.

ALLAS— Former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, made several requests of the Texas jail where he was held before he stood trial, including one for a copy of the Bible and another for the name of the company that made the cheese in his sandwiches. Nidal Hasan was held at the Bell County Jail for four years before his August court-martial for his shooting spree at the Army post. Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death. Hasan filed 21 requests with the jail while awaiting trial. In April, Hasan asked: “Please tell me the name of the company that produces the white cheese on my sandwiches; also the type of cheese i.e. mozzarella.” Hasan is a Muslim who insisted on keeping a beard during his trial as an expression of his faith. According to John Galligan, his civil attorney, Hasan was often concerned about whether his food was being prepared according to Islamic dietary standards. Hasan also asked the jail for a copy of the Bible and added, “Please send a knowledgeable person to answer my difficult questions as well as a paperback copy for my personal use.” Galligan and one of Hasan’s military lawyers, Lt. Col. Kris Poppe, said they thought Hasan was studying the Bible from an Islamic perspective.

Hasan also wanted a clock to track his daily prayer times as a Muslim. The costs of jailing Hasan included a guard to watch him at least 12 hours a day and daily helicopter rides from the jail to the Fort Hood courthouse during his trial. Galligan has accused the Army of “overkill” in trying and convicting Hasan, who is now on military death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. “I mean, it’s just a bunch of overkill,” Galligan said. “Overreach. Unnecessary funds that were spent.” Hasan walked into a Fort Hood medical readiness building in November 2009 carrying two guns and several magazines of ammunition, shouted Islamic slogans and opened fire on soldiers awaiting medical tests and vaccines.

rooklyn (NY) -- Office workers at an Upper East Side hearing aid company were exposed to a suspicious white powder when they opened a letter from an irate customer on January 5 morning. “There was a letter to the doctor and it had no return address,” the police said and added that the letter writer was upset that the company had made a bad hearing
aid for his daughter. The person who opened it and one more person were exposed to the white powder. The police are testing the substance and both workers are being decontaminated at the scene. The employees were exposed around 8.40 am on January 5 on the seventhfloor suite on Madison Avenue near East 60th Street.

n Indianapolis man is facing charges related to the theft of six human brains from the Indiana Medical History Museum. The police said David Charles allegedly entered the museum and lifted six jars of ‘human brain matter.’ Not only this, Charles, 21, attempted to sell the brains on e-Bay for $600. He marketed the macabre items under the headline, ‘human brains for sale.’ Charles even posted about the bottled brains on his Facebook page, writing, “Yo, you know you want one. Someone had to die for you to get this.” But the brain-for-bucks plan apparently went awry when an alert e-Bay shopper spotted the unusual items and contacted the authorities.
Thanks to all the electronic clues left by Charles, the police nabbed him in no time.
Fraudsters use stolen credit cards to pay for parking tickets BY A STAFF WRITER

EW YORK, NY -- Swindlers used stolen credit cards to pay off thousands of dollars in parking tickets on the city’s web site, a Department of Investigations (DOI) probe has found. They paid off more than $15,000 in tickets in the nine-month period ending in April 2008. In some cases, suspects were busted after credit-card companies and banks alerted the Department of Finance about the charges. Rameez Mustafa, 38, of Freeport was nabbed in 2008 for using a swiped card to pay 12 parking tickets for about $1,700.
Mustafa also used it to clear his E-ZPass bills and pay for car insurance. He pleaded guilty the next year to attempted identify theft but avoided jail by agreeing to pay restitution. The DOI also nabbed Janelle Allen, 26, of Brooklyn. She allegedly paid almost $1,000 in tickets for three cars using a card she swiped from a relative. She also racked up an additional $17,000 in charges on the card and was charged with identity theft. The investigation, which started in 2008, found other fraudsters had also used stolen cards to pay off their tickets. They had to pay back the money but there was not enough evidence for criminal charges.

worth $2,000 was found missing from one of two trailers that were forced open at the Tower City wastewater plant at 860 W. Grand Ave. The trailers were likely have been broken into between 3 pm on December 24 and 9 am on December 27.

he Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Bible used by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for his swearing-in went missing after the New Year’s Day ceremony, sparking a panicked, hours-long search for the historic tome. “They had the whole detail looking through blankets,’’ a police source said of the scramble by at least 50 NYPD detectives and city officials to find the Bible, which was given to President Franklin Roosevelt as a gift at his first inauguration in March 1933. Former President Bill Clinton performed the ceremony on January 1 as de Blasio laid his hand on the holy book. But around 2.30 pm, the rare Bible was nowhere to be found, sparking a massive book-hunt at City Hall. “We were looking in garbage cans outside, in all the bags,” one searcher said.
Shelton building fire leaves 5 hurt

HELTON -- At least five people sustained burns when a major fire engulfed a building in Connecticut, causing part of the building to collapse. The blaze broke out just after midnight on January 6 in the basement of the four-story building on Howe Avenue in Shelton. Flames quickly spread to an attached building, which was also badly damaged in the inferno. Authorities believe everyone got out before the top floors collapsed into the middle of the building. At least 30 people were forced out of their homes in the incident. The fire brigade was forced to bring water to the scene in tanker trucks because hydrants weren’t working due to a water main break. A fire truck was damaged during the collapse. The building housed businesses on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors. The cause of the fire was not known when this report went to the press.

ENVER (Colorado) — A Saudi man convicted in Colorado of sexually abusing his Indonesian housekeeper and keeping her as a virtual slave will probably appeal after a judge denied his request to be released and sent home, a defense lawyer said. Another lawyer said the man was considering a new legal challenge on separate grounds. Denver attorney Hal Haddon said he had not been allowed to speak to Homaidan al-Turki after a state judge ruled on January 2 that he had no authority to grant his release, but his client might like to appeal. According to Haddon, the judge did not rule that it was inappropriate for al-Turki to be released on probation but only said he did not have the power to do so. He said the ruling was devastating for al-Turki’s wife and children in Saudi Arabia. Al-Turki, a linguist who was living and working in Colorado, was convicted in 2006 of unlawful sexual contact by use of force, false imprisonment and other counts. He was sentenced to eight years to life in prison. He denied the allegations, saying he was a victim of anti-Muslim sentiment. Probation would have allowed him to

Tax revenue from the two money sources have been fantastic for state coffers, generating $430 million from casino slot machines alone in the peak fiscal year of 2007 and a total of $6.5 billion since the arrival of slots in 1993. After a hike in the tax to $3.40 per pack, cigarettes fetched another $421 million for the state during the 2012 fiscal year. But state officials say those totals are no longer sustainable. Long a sure bet with virtually guaranteed profits, gambling has been transformed into a fast-changing industry as six of the 12 casinos in Atlantic City have filed for bankruptcy in the past six years.

In Connecticut, the slot-machine revenues to the state from Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun are collapsing, and are now predicted to drop to $212 million in the 2017 fiscal year — a stunning turnaround that is blamed on increased gambling competition in New York, Rhode Island and elsewhere. Meanwhile, the state recently projected that cigarette tax revenues will drop from the $421 million peak to $348 million by 2018. Of more than 25 major tax categories, revenue from gambling and smoking represent the two largest declines in the Connecticut budget. To be sure, the overall numbers are still high, as gambling and smoking are still projected to account for more revenue than inheritance, real estate conveyance and alcohol taxes combined. “Whenever we were in a jam, the only taxes that were seen as permissible to raise

The police said Ved Wadhwa, 56, was driving his yellow cab south on 118th St. New York at 3.30 pm when the vehicle suddenly veered to the left and hit a parked car. The taxi bounced off the parked vehicle and jerked to the right, striking a second car across the street before coming to a stop. Paramedics rushed Wadhwa to Jamaica Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

chaumburg Township Assessor John R. Lawson’s office, along with the Cook County Board of Review, is hosting a seminar for residential property owners on January 7 The free-for-public seminar to be held at Schaumburg Township Hall, One Illinois Blvd, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169, will educate taxpayers on how to file a successful tax appeal in a time when the economy is putting added pressures to home owners. The event includes a short presentation by Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Patlak explaining how property taxes are calculated and the appeal procedure. A media release also advises taxpayers to bring a copy of their second installment tax bill to the seminar. According to Lawson, this will be the last opportunity Schaumburg Township homeowners will have through the Cook County Board of Review before the fall 2014 tax bills. “It is very important to appeal your assessed value” he said, adding that a successful appeal on the assessed value will take effect on the second installment of the 2013 tax bill payable in 2014. “It is crucial that property owners are not over assessed”, said Lawson who encourages any residential property owner to appeal against their assessed value even if they recently appealed with the Cook County Assessor’s Office.

month. Witnesses said the suspect wearing a hooded sweatshirt, a ski mask and gloves entered the businesses with his hands in his pockets, implying that he had a gun, and demanded money from the cash register before fleeing. The man robbed the Shell Gas Station at 9955 S. Western Ave. at 6.03 pm on December 8, the Starbucks at 1933 W. 103rd St. at 5.25 am on December 16 and the CVS at 1930 W. 103rd St. at 7.05 am on December 28.

HICAGO — The police are looking for men who forced their way into two Northwest Side homes, and attacked women occupants before taking away cash and valuables. In both instances, women were forced inside their homes by two armed men who knocked on the door. A home was invaded 7.30 pm on December 30 in the 3700 block of North Oconto Avenue in Belmont Heights. A 67-year-old woman opened the door, and two armed men struck her in her face as they forced their way inside the apartment. The men took cash and jewelry before they fled. Earlier on December 27, robbers strck at a house in the 5200 block of North Mobile Avenue in Jefferson Park just before midnight. When a 40-year-old woman answered her door, two armed men gatecrashed into the house and took money and a cellphone, said the police.

Plant remedy for cancer
Chemicals found in some plants may act as boosters for anti-cancer drugs thereby reducing debilitating side-effects, reveals a new study SAHANA GHOSH, KOLKATA
W
hat do tea, turmeric and broccoli have in common? A lot, when it comes to an arsenal of certain chemicals found in them, called phytochemicals, that can be harnessed to combat cancer therapy side-effects in synergy with conventional anti-cancer drugs. Chemotherapy is fraught with side-effects. Now Indian scientists have shown how certain naturally-occurring plant chemicals when used in combination with routine cancer drugs can actually lower the dosage of the medication, thereby minimizing the aftereffects.
Moreover, phytochemicals (plant chemicals) may increase the efficiency of the drugs, said Madhumita Roy, head of the Environmental Carcinogenesis and Toxicology Department at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) here, who led the study. “Our data suggest that treatment of cells with these phytochemicals in conjunction with chemotherapeutic drugs resulted in the same extent of cell killing at a much lower concentration of the drug,” Roy told IANS. Some examples of the plant-derived chemicals include curcumin found in turmeric, polyphenols found in tea — both green and black — and isothiocyanates that are common in cauliflowers, cabbages, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, among others. These agents, in tandem with anti-cancer drugs, Roy
explained, reduce the levels of certain proteins which are elevated in cancer. This, in turn, sensitizes the deadly cancer cells to opt for suicide — a process called apoptosis. Besides fighting cancer, phytochemicals can also play a key role in cancer prevention. Another facet of these phytochemicals is that they are non-toxic to the human body. According to CNCI director Jaydip Biswas, since the treatment protocols for cancer are not only expensive but also cause severe side-effects, “plant derived products with anti-cancer potential may come to the rescue. They may improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.”
n ASPIRIN: Take two tablets of aspirin and crush them
