deep freeze spread from the United States Midwest to the East and South, setting record low temperatures from Boston to Birmingham, and leaves atleast 21 people dead, authorities said. The Midwest and the East experienced temperatures colder than several parts of Antarctica.

North Texas confirms 20 flu deaths WASHINGTON: Health officials confirmed at least 20 people have died from flu, mostly H1N1 influenza, in north Texas this season, media reported on January 6. The tally was made by health departments in Dallas county, Denton county and Tarrant county, all in north Texas, Xinhua quoted local media KHOU as saying in a report. Hospitals confirm eight deaths in Dallas county, and another nine positive flu cases have been logged by the medical examiner’s office. Denton county reported two deaths. Tarrant county has had one death linked to the flu. All of the Dallas victims were adults while a child was among the two victims in Denton. Hospitals across north Texas have been seeing a increasing number of patients with flu-related cases. — IANS

The big chill started in the Midwest last weekend, and by two days covered about almost half of the country. In New York City, the high was expected to be -12 C; in Boston, around -8 C. The cold turned deadly as officials reported at least 21 cold-related deaths across the country since January 5. , including seven in Illinois, and six in Indiana. In New Orleans, which reported a low of -3 C, hardware stores ran out of

pipe insulation. A pipe burst in an Atlanta suburb and a main road quickly froze over. In downtown Atlanta, a Ferris wheel near Centennial Olympic Park that opened over the summer to give riders a bird’s eye view of the city closed because it was too cold. The cold air sent temperatures down to -15 degrees in New York, smashing a 118- year-old record, while Washington DC posted the coldest spell in 18 years.

Prez for unemployment

BENEFITS EXTENSION IANS, WASHINGTON

U

nited States President Barack Obama stepped up pressure on the Congress to extend unemployment benefits by approving the bill which has just cleared procedural hurdle in the Senate. Speaking at an event at the White House on January 7, Obama said the legislation would restore benefits to millions of people who have been struggling to cope with the “aftermath of the worst economic

crisis in generations”, Xinhua reported. “So letting unemployment insurance expire for millions of Americans is wrong. Congress should make things right. I am very appreciative that they’re are on their way to doing just that,” said Obama. “We’ve got to get this across the finish line without obstruction or delay, and we need the House of Representatives to be able to vote for it as well. And that’s the bottom line,” he added.

Almost 3,400 flights were delayed till January 7, according to a website, while 2,400 flights were cancelled. The bulk of the cancelled flights were in Cleveland, Chicago, Indianapolis and Buffalo in New York. About 500 rail passengers were stranded on January 7 on board three Amtrak trains stuck in drifting snow near Chicago in northern Illinois and were without food for long periods of time.

THE BITTER chill gripping North America is a result of Arctic air that has spilled southwards, and global warming may be a cause. Arctic air is normally penned in at the roof of the world by a powerful circular wind called the polar vortex. When the vortex weakens, the air starts heading southwards, bringing exceptional chill to middle latitudes. The weather shift is also helped by changes in a high altitude wind called the jet stream. This convection starts to zigzag, creating loops of extremely cold weather, depending on the location.

from Southeast Asia and Europe to whom she expressed her desire to become a martyr for the Islamic cause. One of those conspirators told her in March 2009 that she must travel to Sweden to help accomplish the murder of cartoonist Lars Vilks. INDIA ENTERS SELECT CLUB OF SPACEFARERS The Indian space scientists’ toil of over two decades in conceiving cryogenic engine technology comes to fruition VENKATACHARI JAGANNATHAN, SRIHARIKOTA

I

ndia on January 5 joined the select league of space-faring nations with indigenous cryogenic engine technology, successfully launching its rocket that put a communication satellite in orbit. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh termed it as “yet another important step”. The successful launch of India’s heavier rocket — the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-D5 (GSLV-D5) — not only means the indigenous cryogenic engine has performed well but would also pave way for sizeable savings for the country in future launch costs. It also opens up a window to earn foreign exchange from launching heavier foreign satellites. The Indian space scientists’ toil of around two decades in conceiving the more efficient cryogenic engine technology, which provides more thrust for every kilogram of propellant, spending around `4 billion has come to fruition with the delivery of the GSAT-14 in the outer space.

AAP office attacked in Ghaziabad GHAZIABAD: Around 40 men said to be from a Hindu group attacked the AAP office here on January 8, apparently to protest a statement on Kashmir made by party leader Prashant Bhushan, witnesses said. The attackers barged into the Aam Aadmi Party office at Kaushambi, stoned it heavily shattering windows, broke flower pots and abused AAP leaders, an AAP leader named Dilip Pandey, present at the site told IANS. Before fleeing after some 20 minutes, the attackers threatened to attack AAP leaders in the future too. Pandey said they were from a group called Hindu Raksha Dal. “All our volunteers were asked to get inside (the office) when the attack took place,” Pandey said, adding the attackers raised slogans against a particular community. Asked if the arson was a reaction to Bhushan’s comments on army deployment in the Kashmir Valley from which the AAP has distanced itself, Pandey said: “It could be.” The attackers, in their 20s and 30s, came in four or five cars. The AAP office at Kaushambi is located not far from the personal residence of AAP founder leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Space Center here. Around 17 minutes into the space flight, the 49.13meter tall, 414.75-ton GSLV-D5 rocket slung the 1,982-kg GSAT-14 in the intended orbit.

Priyanka Vadra to play

BIGGER ROLE? IANS, NEW DELHI

A

meeting of some Congress leaders on January 7 took a lot of people by surprise when Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, sister of party vice president Rahul Gandhi, also turned up. A party leader would only say that the meeting was held to discuss the tour programs of Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Speaking to reporters, Congress general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said, “Even if she is not seen taking part in active politics, she is an active member of the Indian National Congress.” “She has her own views on political issues and talks to party workers from time to time. “If on some issue she has talked to some leaders, what is there to be surprised about? What is new in this?” Dwivedi said. A Congress leader, not wishing to be identified, told IANS that Priyanka Vadra joined the meeting towards the end. The meeting was held at Rahul Gandhi’s 12 Tughlak

Lane residence. It was not clear if Rahul Gandhi was present there. Priyanka has been looking after the constituencies of her brother Rahul (Amethi) and mother Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli). Her presence created a buzz in party circles as the news spread fast to the party headquarters at 24 Akbar Road. Many speculated if Priyanka Vadra would paly an active role in the campaign for the April-May general elections that is likely to be led by R a h u l Gandhi.

Muzaffarnagar: officials refuse to acquit Muslim leaders IANS, LUCKNOW

T

he Muzaffarnagar district administration has refused to withdraw cases against Muslim leaders named in riots cases, home department officials said on January 8. Sources said Muzaffarnagar District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma, in a report signed by the district police chief and investigating officer, against the accused, including Bahutold the Uttar Pradesh government jan Samaj Party parliamentarian that any move to withdraw cases Qadir Rana, was “not tenable”.

In response to a letter from special secretary (Law) Rangnath Pandey on plausibility and probability of

withdrawing cases against minority leaders, Sharma in his report said this was not possible since till now even the investigation was not over. The district officials also said that any such move could only be initiated when the matters have reached the courts. Reports of the government move have drawn flak from the opposition parties and they have accused the Akhilesh Yadav Government of trying to appease the minorities and imperilling the judicial process.

CAG audit of telecos may open Pandora’s box IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Delhi High Court ruling that the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) can look into the accounts of the private telecom firms because exchequer revenue is involved in it, may open a Pandora’s box and lead to similar demands for other sectors, although that may not be the intent or spirit behind the judgment, analysts and industry associations fear.

“We believe the CAG was constituted to be answerable to Parliament only in respect of businesses which are owned by the government,” said Sidharth Birla, president of industry lobby FICCI. “Therefore, to my mind, there is no place for CAG interfering into a private company’s books,” he said. The Delhi High Court ruled on January 6 that the CAG can look into the receipts of the private telecom firms as they have revenue sharing arrangements with the gov-

ernment. Ankita Somani, research analyst at Angel Broking, said the judgment could have wider impact on other sectors as all companies’ revenues are linked to the Consolidated Fund. “Telecom companies like other companies are already being audited by independent auditors. So, CAG will be doing the same thing,” Somani told IANS. However, some analysts argue that the judgment need not be seen as an interference in the functioning of the private telecom firms.

The sting in Manmohan’s ‘tale’ Manmohan Singh goes belligerent against Narendra Modi in his purportedly last press conference as the prime minister by saying it would be “disastrous” to have Modi as PM AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he only occasion when the prime minister perked up during his otherwise somewhat insipid press conference was when he castigated Narendra Modi in uncharacteristically abrasive terms, thereby giving the latter a taste of his own bitter medicine. While doing so, Manmohan Singh virtually recalled the description by media personnel of the Gujarat chief minister as a “mass murderer” for his role during the 2002 riots. The prime minister’s biting observation - that if being “strong” meant “presiding over the mass massacre of innocent citizens”, it wasn’t the kind of strength which he wanted - was yet another example of his combativeness. The context of Manmohan Singh’s comment was a question on the perception of him as a weak PM. It is evident that it is an image which disturbs him more than anything else. It may be recalled that when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, L.K. Advani, used to raise this question of weakness before the 2009 general election, the prime minister responded by saying that he was not someone who

cowered in a corner, as Advani did, while the saffron cadres demolished a protected monument. Following the jeering criticism, Advani had refrained from levelling the accusation again. Now, faced with the latest invective against its poster-boy, the BJP rolled out its big guns — Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad and others — to return the prime minister’s fire. Jaitley’s view is that Manmohan Singh lowered the dignity of the prime minister’s office by saying that it will be “disastrous” for the country if Modi becomes the prime minister. The BJP claims that such accusations are pointless when Modi has been exonerated by the judiciary. But, what the BJP misses is that the war of words is not a legal, but a political skirmish, and that Modi may have hidden his tracks well enough to mislead the courts. In any event, the Congress appears to have decided to reiterate its maut ki saudagar (merchant of death) taunt which it directed at Modi before the 2007 Gujarat assembly elections. What the latest exchanges have done is to liven up the poll campaign because the belief till now has been that the Congress is wary of reviving the

riots issue lest it consolidates the Hindu vote behind Modi. However, it is possible that the erosion which he faces of his support base by the Aam Admi Party (AAP) has persuaded the Congress to take on the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate more aggressively. Apart from the prime minister’s unusual show of spirit, he stuck to the beaten path with anodyne, even evasive, answers. His claim, for instance, that it was the government’s first term between 2004 and 2009 which saw most of the corruption cases was erroneous considering

that a minister had to resign following his overseeing of the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) inquiry report on the coal block allocations for mining. Moreover, the PM’s references to global factors for the economic downturn till he finally conceded that there were also domestic reasons amounted to being economical with the truth. Even then, his identification of these reasons as infrastructure bottlenecks and the slowness of environmental

Old city’s bawarchis keep alive Mughlai culinary magic MOHD ASIM KHAN, NEW DELHI

W

hen we talk of the food at an upscale restaurant we invariably talk of the chef behind it. But despite most of us finding the array of food available in Delhi’s old quarters lip-smacking, few of us remember the ‘bawarchis’, or the traditional cooks, behind the culinary magic. Purani Dilli, as the area is known, is still home to some of the indigenous Mughal-era bawarchis and many dishes’ origins can be traced to this place. Despite that, the Old Delhi cooks remain anonymous to food lovers as their toque and apron-wearing counterparts in five-star hotels and expensive fine dining restaurants hog all the limelight. No fancy oven, no proper kitchen, the bawarchis of Old Delhi are seemingly caught in a time warp and usually cook on the roadside using the traditional wood fuel. Although some of them have started using gas stoves, paucity of LPG cylinders makes them use firewood very often. They cook only on order. Mohalla Qabristan near Turkman

Gate is house to some of the oldest bawarchi families of Old Delhi. However, it is not easy to trace their origins as even the oldest among the cooks can’t recall as to how many generations have already gone in the profession of cooking food. But they have been around for a few centuries, for sure. “I learnt this art from my father, and he from his father. That is all I know,” Mohammed Yameen, 70,

The only thing in the world that these bawarchis care about is their recipes and spices told IANS, as he intently peels an onion. At some distance his sons - he has five and all are in the same profession — are busy with different chores. Yameen never cared to send any of them to school. The only thing in the world that these bawarchis care about is their recipes and spices. They guard their recipes with their lives - one of the reasons they seldom keep people

from outside their family as apprentices. And in case they have to do for some reason, they keep the apprentices away from the spices they use. This, they think, is essential to survive in the profession and maintain their exclusive taste. “Sab masalo ka hi to khel hai (The trick lies in the spices),” says Haji Basheer of Sheedu Nihari Shop - one of the oldest such in Delhi - and a relative of Yameen. Over the years, different variations of qorma have been thrown up such as white qorma and green qorma. Similarly, while taftaan, rumali roti and paratha are common, disco roti, maina and bulbul rotis are little known. It is difficult to trace the origin of these variations. “I don’t know who invented these dishes but they are quite popular now. We prepare these items only on order. But please don’t ask me about their recipes. I won’t tell you,” says Mohamed Saleem, 60, another bawarchi. “There are a lot of people nowadays who are cooking food. But they are newcomers and our customers always come to us for our unique taste,” Zaamin, an old bawarchi.

Scientist finds gene behind type-2 diabetes Improper functioning of a single gene restricts release of insuling into bloodstream, discovers prof Bellur Prabhakar IANS, NEW YORK

I

f a single gene is not functioning properly, insulin is not released into the bloodstream to regulate blood sugar levels — leading to type 2 diabetes, claims a scientist of Indian origin. A research team led by Bellur S. Prabhakar, professor and head of microbiology and immunology at University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, found that dysfunction in a single gene called MADD in mice causes fasting hyperglycemia — one of the major symptoms of type 2 diabetes. In a healthy person, beta cells in the pancreas secrete the hormone

mutation in MADD was strongly associated with type 2 diabetes. People with this mutation had high blood glucose and problems of insulin secretion — the hallmarks of type 2 diabetes,” said Prabhakar. To study the role of MADD in diabetes, Prabhakar and his team developed a mouse model in which the MADD gene was deleted from the insulin-producing beta cells. All such mice had elevated blood glucose levels, which the researchers found was due to insufficient release of insulin. “We didn’t see any insulin resistance in

their cells, but it was clear that the beta cells were not functioning properly,” said the study reported online in the journal Diabetes. “The cells were producing plenty of insulin, they just weren’t secreting it,” it added. Prabhakar now hopes to investigate the effect of a drug that allows for the secretion of insulin in MADD-deficient beta cells. “If this drug works to reverse the deficits associated with a defective MADD gene in the beta cells of our model mice, it may have potential for treating people with this mutation who have an insulin-secretion defect and/or type 2 diabetes,” he said.

n Indian IT professional in New Zealand alleged that he faced racism on New Year’s Eve at a bar, a media report said. Sandesh Gopal, 30, a software project manager from Bangalore, said a bouncer stopped him and his friend from entering a bar at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour on New Year’s Eve without giving a proper reason, the New Zealand Herald reported. Gopal alleged that he and his friend were singled out and asked to show identity proofs after which the bouncer told them that they could not enter the bar. “Others, white customers, were let in, and the bouncer just couldn’t tell us why he stopped us,” Gopal was quoted as saying. “We just wanted to celebrate

the New Year like everyone else, and this just spoiled the mood for us,” he said. Gopal said since coming here in 2011, he has had many sour experiences. Gopal, who has travelled to Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore for work, said he feels New Zealand is “most racist”. “The racism here is not overt, but it’s the small things that make us feel that maybe we are not welcome,” he added. According to the report, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination last March pointed out New Zealand’s “persistent discrimination against migrants, particularly of Asian origin”. Discrimination against any religion or ethnicity is illegal under the Human Rights Act.

India, Saudi ink ‘landmark’ accord NEW DELHI: India and Saudi Arabia on January 2 inked a “landmark” agreement on protection of the rights of domestic Indian workers in the kingdom and agreed to work out another accord to streamline ties between employers and the 2.8 million Indian workers in that country. The Agreement on Labor Cooperation for Domestic Service Workers Recruitment was signed by Indian Overseas Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi and visiting Saudi Arabian Labor Minister Adel bin Mohammed Fakeih here. Ravi said the agreement on domestic workers’ protection would help streamline the Labor market. “This will go a long way in protecting the interests of workers..., and for that the Standard Employment Contract should also be finalized at the earliest,” he said. The Standard Employment Contract would seek to govern the relations between the employer and the

employee by ensuring agreed wage, proper working hours, paid holidays, dispute settlement mechanism, the minister said. Ravi said he wanted to thank the Saudi minister and the kingdom for hosting Indian workers “who have contributed to the economic development of Saudi Arabia and continue to be one of the most disciplined, law abiding, and hard working community”. He also thanked the Saudi government for “its humanitarian approach while adopting the Nitaqat program”, and said most of the Indians have corrected their work status. — IANS

Sikh physicist reveals mindfulness apps IANS, NEW YORK

S

martphones, often billed as distractors, can actually help enhance attention and mindfulness, claims an IndianAmerican researcher. Jasprit Singh, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at University of Michigan, has suggested that smartphones can enhance mindfulness, help users stay attentive and achieve particular goals while at work or home. “In our culture today, we often don’t have scarcity of food or gadgets or knowledge. The scarcity has shifted to mindfulness,” said Singh in a

release issued by University of Michigan. “Humans tend to forget, especially under stress. But smartphones don’t operate that way,” he added. During one of his classes, Singh challenged his students to d e s i g n mobile apps to help users set and meet ‘well-

ness’ milestones. The apps his team developed focused on delivering messages to users at a set time or place. An app named ‘Balance’, developed for senior citizens, offers easy and routine access to short exercise videos that could improve coordination and prevent falls. ‘WeeAddition’ app guides women through pregnancy while ‘Joggle’ is a collaborative art, poetry and music app that could encourage creativity. Another app named ‘College Granny’ is aimed to help students balance studying, socializing and develop healthy habits. The users can set the app to remind them at appropriate times to, say, go to sleep, take break from reading, or quit after a particular number of drinks at a bar, said the release. “The goal of this course was to bring harmony between what we know and what we do,” Singh added.

DHAKA: Bangladesh police on January 7 detained two Jamaat-e-Islami activists for their suspected involvement in attacking Hindus and filed cases in this connection in Jessore and Dinajpur districts. Emdad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Abhoynagar police station, said at least 250 people were involved in attacking the houses of the minority Hindu community in Maloparha and Chapatola villages in Jessore district on January 5. Rioters vandalized and looted more than 50 Hindu houses.

the party has 231 seats, gaining a clear three-fourths majority in the Bangladeshi parliament — Jatiyo Sangshad. Hasina, during the press conference at the prime minister’s official residence — Gono Bhaban, also ordered the enforcement agencies, army and administration to take stern action to stop post-poll violence and save people’s lives, Daily Star reported. “At any cost, lives and properties of people have to be saved, peace ensured and violence stopped,” she said.

No deal for Musharraf: Saudi minister ISLAMABAD: Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al Faisal categorically denied that he was visiting Pakistan to broker a deal for former president Pervez Musharraf. The Saudi minister visited Pakistan amid speculations that he may also discuss a possible exile deal for Musharraf who is facing high treason trial, Xinhua reported. Saudi Arabia brokered an exile deal for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after Pervez Musharraf dismissed his government in 1999. The Saudi minister quickly denied he had discussed Musharraf’s affair with the Pakistani leaders when he was

asked at his press conference in Islamabad. “Absolutely not” was his reply after a smile when a reporter asked him if he was seeking a safe exit for Pervez Musharraf who is presently facing high treason charges in Pakistan. “Musharraf’s is Pakistan’s internal issue and Saudi Arabia does not interfere in internal affairs of other countries,” the Saudi foreign minister said. A special court, hearing high treason case of Pervez Musharraf, reserved its verdict on January 7 on his medical report during the hearing of the high treason trial.

300,000 observers for Afghanistan election KABUL: Afghanistan’s election body has revealed that 300,000 national and international observers will monitor the country’s upcoming presidential election slated for April 5, local newspapers reported on January 5. “Up to 300,000 national and international observers would monitor the coming presidential election,” Xinhua reported citing the English daily Outlook Afghanistan’s quote of Noor Mohammad Noor, the spokesman for the election commission. Another newspaper, the Mandegar

Daily, also quoted Noor in its Sunday (January 5) edition, as saying: “Invitations have been sent to international observers from the European Union and South Asia Association for Regional Cooperation countries.” “As many as 1,400 representatives of 120 local and international entities have already been listed by the election body to monitor,” the spokesman for the Independent Election Commission (IEC) said. Around 12 million of Afghanistan’s 27 million population are estimated to be eligible voters.

NAIROBI: The international charity Save the Children on January 6 delivered 40 tons of emergency aid to more than 5,000 families displaced by fighting in South Sudan, Xinhua reported. The cargo includes plastic sheeting for shelter, blankets and mosquito nets that will be distributed in partnership with UN agencies among people who were forced to flee their homes in Juba and Awerial.

“Children caught up in the fighting are at a significant increased risk of violence, abuse and separation from their families,” the charity said in a statement released here. This is the third Save the Children aid flight into South Sudan since fighting began in Juba on December 15, 2013. The fighting has since spread to many other parts of the country, displacing almost 200,000 people, many of them children.

Communique before Geneva II: US to Iran WASHINGTON: Iran would have to commit itself to the Geneva Communique in order to participate in the upcoming peace conference on Syrian crisis in January, Xinhua quoted the White House as saying on January 6. Iran, a main regional ally of the Syrian government, has said it is ready to play a “constructive” role in the Geneva II conference if it is invited. The meeting, scheduled for January 22, is aimed at ending Syrian conflict of about three years.

The purpose of the Geneva II meeting is to move forward on the principles laid out in the Geneva Communique, White House spokesperson Jay Carney said at a press briefing. “Obviously you cannot participate constructively if you do not buy into those principles and publicly say so,” he added. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon began sending out invitations to the Geneva II meeting on January 6. Iran is not among the first round of nations on the list approved by US and Russia.

Egypt summons Iran’s charge d’affaires CAIRO: Egypt on January 6 summoned Iranian charge d’affaires in Cairo Mojtaba Amani over Tehran’s recent statements expressing concerns about Egypt’s “security crackdown” on Islamist protesters, an official at the Egyptian foreign ministry told Xinhua. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Marzieh Afkham said on January 4 that “Iran is concerned about the surge of violence as a result of conflict between security forces and demonstrators in Egypt”. The remarks were considered by Cairo as an interference in the Egyptian internal affairs. On January 4, the Egyptian foreign ministry also summoned the Qatari ambassador to express rejection of a recent official statement by Doha lashing out at Egypt’s decision for labelling the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group. The Iranian and Qatari statements came after 17 people were killed across Egypt on January 5 in clashes between supporters of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and the police during nationwide pro-Morsi protests. On November 23, Egypt expelled Turkey’s ambassador from Cairo a day after Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for Morsi’s release.

ndia’s growth level this fiscal will probably remain at 5 percent as in last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on January 8. “In the nine years since 2004, we averaged a healthy growth rate of 7.9 percent,” he said here while addressing the inaugural session of the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the annual gathering of people of Indian origin. “There has no doubt been a slowdown in the recent past, and we will probably end this year at the same level as last year with 5 percent growth.” Manmohan Singh said a number of international and domestic factors have contributed to this situa-

tion. “Despite these challenges, our economic fundamentals are strong. Our savings and investment rates are still over 30 percent of the GDP and the entrepreneurial spirit in India is very much alive,” he stated. He urged Indians abroad to stay positive despite questions about the future of the Indian economy and concerns about social challenges. “There is a perception in some quarters outside India that the country is losing its momentum of the past decade. This is also amplified by the political contestations here in India, which are inevitably louder in the election season,” the prime minister said. “I want to assure you that there is no reason to despair about our present or worry about our future.” While lamenting that the government could not legislate deeper

reform measures in the financial and insurance sectors due to lack of greater political support, Manmohan Singh said the decisions that have been made were already beginning to make an impact and India was re-emerging as an attractive investment decision. “I am confident you will see the evidence clearly in the next few months,” he asserted. On the education sector, the prime minister said the number of central universities in the country have gone up from 17 to 44 while the number of IITs and IIMs have doubled. He also expressed his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for addressing the problems of over a million Indian workers after that country adopted a new labor policy.

Indian diaspora seeks strong STEPS AGAINST RAPISTS

NEW DELHI: The Indian diaspora was shaken by the brutal gangrape of a young woman on Dec 16, 2012, and upset over the continuing rapes taking place in the national capital and elsewhere that made the country appear unsafe for women, said members of the Indian diaspora here. It wants the government to take the strictest action against such crimes. Priti Lamba, who belongs to Toronto, Canada, and is here to attend the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), said the incident made the Indian diaspora in Toronto very angry. “When we heard about Damini (the

name given to the victim by the media ) we were very upset. All were upset. The way they raped her was very brutal. They (the accused) should get the strongest punishment,” said Lamba, who had migrated from Punjab to Canada in 1981 and is the vice president of Association of Women of India in Canada (AWIC) that works among Indian women in Canada. “There was also another rape case we learnt about after that. The Indian Government should take strong steps to prevent such incidents,” Lamba told IANS . — IANS

ndia on January 7 pressed for stronger networking between Indian and diaspora youth to forge partnerships in trade, industry, entrepreneurship and social work that would lead to employment and wealth creation. “Our goal should be to build a strong global connect of youth,” Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) Vayalar Ravi said, inaugurating Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2014, an event ahead of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), annual Indian diaspora meet on January 8. The Youth PBD has been envisioned as a platform to provide opportunities to Indian youth to meet and interact with their overseas counterparts. The theme of this year’s PBD is “Engaging Diaspora:

Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi addressing at the 12th PBD on January 7.

Connecting Across Generations” and the Youth PBD is expected to open new horizons of a strong network of young overseas Indians.

Ravi said his ministry has been at the forefront in engaging the youth diaspora residing in various countries by introducing various schemes and projects like Know India Programme (KIP), Study India Programme (SIP), and Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC). These schemes and programmes have benefited the diaspora youth as well as the diaspora children immensely by exposing them to the cultural heritage and the growth and development story of their mother country, India, he added. The report seeks to explore three distinct domains in which the resident and non-resident Indian youth are forming partnerships to create sustainable models of growth that can confront global challenges in the socio-economic sphere.

Reunion Island Indians connect with India NEW DELHI: French is their mother tongue and they have been born and lived for four generations far away from India, but a thirst to know more about the land where their forefathers came from draws them to India regularly. Armoudom Lena, an orthodontist from Reunion Islan, is heading the Indian delegation at the 12th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the largest gathering of Indian diaspora that opened here on January 7. Reunion Island is a small French island in the Indian Ocean, near Mauri-

The Indian-origin population comprises 45 percent of the people on the island that has a population of over 837,000 inhabitants. “We are the most important Indian community in France,” Lena told IANS. Lena, who has come with her son and other Indian members, said the visit to PBD is aimed to help strengthen links with “Mother India”. “We want the young people to strengthen links with Mother India and our country of adoption. Shruti Haasan undergoes surgery HYDERABAD: Late on Jan 5, Shruti Haasan was admitted to a hospital after she complained of acute stomach pain. She later went through an appendicitis surgery. A source said that Shruti brought in the New Year with her dad, Kamal Haasan, in Chennai. “The next day, she flew to Hyderabad and shot from 6 am till evening. At 8 pm she felt uneasy during a press conference and was rushed to the hospital where she was told to undergo an appendectomy at the earliest.” Shruti called up her father, asking if she should fly back to Chennai or go to Mumbai but Kamal suggested she stays put and gets the appendicitis operated in Hyderabad itself. When contacted, her spokesperson from down south informed that her hairdresser and he were with her when the pain hit at first. “She has been advised to not make any sudden movement for the next eight to 10 days. Kamal sir is calling every hour and her friends from the South fraternity are keeping her company.”

ontinuous landslides, narrow and perilous roads — the journey of the Highway team was full of danger while driving down the road to Tabo in Himachal Pradesh to shoot for director Imtiaz Ali’s road movie. The crew members’ perilous journey is captured in the latest episode of Highway Diaries, a short video snippet. They drove through the narrow and perilous roads of the northern state with continuous landslides. A big stone fell from the mountains

and broke the windscreen of one of their cars, forcing them to halt and wait for the bulldozer machines to clear the road, said a statement. The video diary ends with actress Alia Bhatt, who features in the film, delivering her lines that rightly describe the breathtaking location — Tumne kabhi bataya nahi ki duniya aisi bhi hai, unbelievable! (You never told me that world is like this)”. Presented by Sajid Nadiadwala, Highway, which stars Randeep Hooda in the male lead, captures the landscape of the various regions in the country.

‘Sholay 3D’— Classics never pale Film: “Sholay 3D”; Cast: Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan and Amjad Khan; Writers: Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar; Director: Ramesh Sippy; Rating: *****

I

f as William Shakespeare told us, a rose by any other name smells just as sweet, then Sholay in any format -3D, 4D or whatever, would remain just the same. An inviolable classic, timeless, as it is timely. The new version, spruced up with flying bullets and thundering hoofs, comes to us at a time when Dhoom is trending. So it’s Sholay 3D weighed against Dhoom: 3. Undoubtedly, the current films that seem to make so much money seem to pale into flamboyant insignificance when weighed against the hefty impact of Sholay. As many as 38 years have passed since Sholay and its astonishing lines (Salim-Javed at their pithiest) created immediate and enduring history. Yes, the film opened badly. But then Rome and Amitabh Bachchan’s career weren’t built in

MUMBAI: The shooting of Farooque Sheikh’s last film Youngistaan wrapped up with five kg of Indian sweet jalebi from the late actor’s favorite sweet shop in Indore. Producer Vashu Bhagnani ordered jalebi for the entire unit when the film was wrapped up Dec 28. Vashu said: “In October, Farooque saab had personally got us jalebis from this particular shop and force fed all of us. I am not a jalebi guy. But I enjoyed Farooque saab’s insistent warmth”. — IANS

Rich in drama, vivacious and vibrant in its characterizations, Sholay about one armless man’s two-men army and their battle against a sadistic dacoit (Amjad Khan) spawns innumerable eras of cinematic experience. It is the most well assembled screenplay ever. With the passage of time, we can view the film in episodes — the stunning train robbery sequence at the start, the massacre of ‘Thakur’ Sanjeev Kumar’s family by Gabbar and his ragged henchmen, Dharmendra’s ‘suicide’ drama from atop a water tower, ‘Jai’ Amitabh Bachchan’s marriage proposal on behalf of his buddy ‘Veeru’ Dharmendra, ‘Gabbar’ Amjad Khan’s Russian roulette in the ravines with his trio of petrified henchmen, the widow ‘Radha’ Jaya Bhaduri’s flashback into a colorful Holi when she accosts her future fatherin-law with incessant chatter (Radha could have been Basanti), Jagdeep’s Soorma Bhopali and Asrani’s ‘angrezon ke zamaanein ka jailor’ episodes.... each of these and many others, have a throbbing autonomous life of their own. he debate on the bill for the formation of a separate Telangana state finally began in the Andhra Pradesh assembly on January 8, but the house was adjourned within few minutes amid strong protests by the YSR Congress Party. There was an uproar in the house when Tourism Minister Vatti Vasant Kumar initiated the debate, strongly opposing the bill for the bifurcation of the state. Opposing even the debate, Seemandhra legislators of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) raised slogans in support of a united Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP lawmakers, who surrounded the speaker's podium, tore copies of the bill and flung the pieces in the air. Amid utter pandemonium and shouting of slogans, Speaker N. After his assurance that the government would provide information on issues mentioned in the bill, Seemandhra legislators of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) called off their protest. Speaker N. Manohar asked Vasant Kumar to initiate the debate. However, YSRCP members continued their protest demanding that the house first pass a resolution to appeal to the central government to keep the state united. Kiran, who acted in 19 films including three Tamil movies, ended his life in his flat at Srinagar colony around midnight. He was alone in the flat. Vishita, who had gone out for a family party, rushed to the flat after he did not respond to her mobile phone calls. A police officer quoted his wife and other family members as saying that he was in deep depression for the last few days. He refused to attend the birthday party of a relative in the city that night and sent his wife for the same. Kiran was depressed over not getting any new film since February last year. Family mem-

bers told police that he was in touch with a Tamil filmmaker and was waiting for his phone call on January 5. He became depressed when he did not get the call. Born January 26, 1980, Kiran began his film career with Telugu film Chitram, a romantic-drama in 2000. He had a meteoric rise in the industry as the first movie directed by Teja proved a hit. This was followed by Nuvvu Neenu and Manasantha Nuvve, which were also huge success. The charming hero with romantic image began to be called ‘hat-trick hero’. In 2001, he bagged Filmfare best actor award, youngest to bag the honor. After the initial success, Kiran was getting few films and faced a tough time in both professional and personal life.

dentical centuries from skipper Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson helped India lift the U-19 Asia Cup cricket title with a 40-run win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium here on January 4. Put in, Samson and Zol struck 100s as India posted a competitive 314 for eight in 50 overs. Pakistan finished on 274 for nine after Saud Shakeel made an unbeaten 102. India got off to a good start, with

into top 10 for the first time last year as he weaved his one-handed magic to force the Frenchman into errors while himself blasting a

stream of breathtaking winners. In contrast, the 30-year old Roger-Vasselin, playing only his second tour final in 12 seasons since turning pro and still in quest of maiden title, appeared drained from the two back-to-back three-set matches. He did, though, show some flashes of brilliance that had seen him move to 48 last season before ending the year at 52. Wawrinka was at his aggressive best and having come through to the final without dropping a set, was obviously the fresher of the two and played a near-flawless tennis, especially in the second set to win his second Chennai Open title after 2011. Roger-Vasselin played well enough in the first set to stay level with Wawrinka until 5-5 after surviving three break points in the third game. The Swiss, who never faced a break point, finally broke

the Frenchman in the 10th game for 6-5 and then held serve to take the set in 57 minutes. Wawrinka, a sparring partner of fellow Swiss Roger Federer, stepped up the pace in the second that he began with a break of serve in the first game and another in the fifth en route to a comprehensive win. An elated Wawrinka, who had lost to Roger-Vasselin last year in Basel, said after the match that he hoped to improve further. In the semi final, his rival Canadian World No.32 Vasek Pospisil conceded the match due to a sore lower back at 5-5 in the second set after the top seed had taken the first at 6-4. He belongs to the rare breed of one-handed players like Roger Federer, did just enough to win the first set in which the six-foot, four-inch Pospisil, who helped Canada reach the Davis Cup final last year, had his chances.

But Colleen LaRose said she had renounced terrorism since surrendering. “I don’t want to be in jihad (holy war) no more,” she told Judge Petrese Tucker in Philadelphia. LaRose, who had faced a life sentence, joined a 2009 conspiracy to target artist Lars Vilks because he had depicted Prophet Mohammed as a dog. Muslim extremists had offered $100,000 to anyone who killed Vilks.

Nidal Hasan requested for Bible before trial BY A STAFF WRITER

D

ALLAS— Former Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people at Fort Hood in 2009, made several requests of the Texas jail where he was held before he stood trial, including one for a copy of the Bible and another for the name of the company that made the cheese in his sandwiches. Nidal Hasan was held at the Bell County Jail for four years before his August court-martial for his shooting spree at the Army post. Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death. Hasan filed 21 requests with the jail while awaiting trial. In April, Hasan asked: “Please tell me the name of the company that produces the white cheese on my sandwiches; also the type of cheese i.e. mozzarella.” Hasan is a Muslim who insisted on keeping a beard during his trial as an expression of his faith. According to John Galligan, his civil attorney, Hasan was often concerned about whether his food was being prepared according to Islamic dietary standards. Hasan also asked the jail for a copy of the Bible and added, “Please send a knowledgeable person to answer my difficult questions as well as a paperback copy for my personal use.” Galligan and one of Hasan’s military lawyers, Lt. Col. Kris Poppe, said they thought Hasan was studying the Bible from an Islamic perspective.

Hasan also wanted a clock to track his daily prayer times as a Muslim. The costs of jailing Hasan included a guard to watch him at least 12 hours a day and daily helicopter rides from the jail to the Fort Hood courthouse during his trial. Galligan has accused the Army of “overkill” in trying and convicting Hasan, who is now on military death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. “I mean, it’s just a bunch of overkill,” Galligan said. “Overreach. Unnecessary funds that were spent.” Hasan walked into a Fort Hood medical readiness building in November 2009 carrying two guns and several magazines of ammunition, shouted Islamic slogans and opened fire on soldiers awaiting medical tests and vaccines.

The employees were exposed around 8.40 am on January 5 on the seventhfloor suite on Madison Avenue near East 60th Street.

Larose, of Pennsburg, Pa., told the judge she once had thought about the jihad from morning to night. ”I was in a trance and couldn’t see anything else,” she said. Prosecutors depicted LaRose as a ‘lonely and isolated’ woman who was flattered to be enlisted in a jihadist cause online. LaRose left the US to join a terror cell in Ireland but left after about six weeks because she ‘grew frustrated because her co-conspirators were not ready for action’ Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams said. But her lawyer, public defender Mark Wilson, said: “There’s virtually no chance that she would ever be involved in any violent jihad ever again.”

Man held for stealing human brains from Indiana museum BY A STAFF WRITER

n Indianapolis man is facing charges related to the theft of six human brains from the Indiana Medical History Museum. The police said David Charles allegedly entered the museum and lifted six jars of ‘human brain matter.’ Not only this, Charles, 21, attempted to sell the brains on e-Bay for $600. He marketed the macabre items under the headline, ‘human brains for sale.’ Charles even posted about the bottled brains on his Facebook page, writing, “Yo, you know you want one. Someone had to die for you to get this.” But the brain-for-bucks plan apparently went awry when an alert e-Bay shopper spotted the unusual items and contacted the authorities.

Thanks to all the electronic clues left by Charles, the police nabbed him in no time.

Fraudsters use stolen credit cards to pay for parking tickets BY A STAFF WRITER

N

EW YORK, NY -- Swindlers used stolen credit cards to pay off thousands of dollars in parking tickets on the city’s web site, a Department of Investigations (DOI) probe has found. They paid off more than $15,000 in tickets in the nine-month period ending in April 2008. In some cases, suspects were busted after credit-card companies and banks alerted the Department of Finance about the charges. Rameez Mustafa, 38, of Freeport was nabbed in 2008 for using a swiped card to pay 12 parking tickets for about $1,700.

Mustafa also used it to clear his E-ZPass bills and pay for car insurance. He pleaded guilty the next year to attempted identify theft but avoided jail by agreeing to pay restitution. The DOI also nabbed Janelle Allen, 26, of Brooklyn. She allegedly paid almost $1,000 in tickets for three cars using a card she swiped from a relative. She also racked up an additional $17,000 in charges on the card and was charged with identity theft. The investigation, which started in 2008, found other fraudsters had also used stolen cards to pay off their tickets. They had to pay back the money but there was not enough evidence for criminal charges.

Former President Bill Clinton performed the ceremony on January 1 as de Blasio laid his hand on the holy book. But around 2.30 pm, the rare Bible was nowhere to be found, sparking a massive book-hunt at City Hall. “We were looking in garbage cans outside, in all the bags,” one searcher said.

HELTON -- At least five people sustained burns when a major fire engulfed a building in Connecticut, causing part of the building to collapse. The blaze broke out just after midnight on January 6 in the basement of the four-story building on Howe Avenue in Shelton. Flames quickly spread to an attached building, which was also badly damaged in the inferno. Authorities believe everyone got out before the top floors collapsed into the middle of the building. At least 30 people were forced out of their homes in the incident. The fire brigade was forced to bring water to the scene in tanker trucks because hydrants weren’t working due to a water main break. A fire truck was damaged during the collapse. The building housed businesses on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors. The cause of the fire was not known when this report went to the press.

ENVER (Colorado) — A Saudi man convicted in Colorado of sexually abusing his Indonesian housekeeper and keeping her as a virtual slave will probably appeal after a judge denied his request to be released and sent home, a defense lawyer said. Another lawyer said the man was considering a new legal challenge on separate grounds. Denver attorney Hal Haddon said he had not been allowed to speak to Homaidan al-Turki after a state judge ruled on January 2 that he had no authority to grant his release, but his client might like to appeal. According to Haddon, the judge did not rule that it was inappropriate for al-Turki to be released on probation but only said he did not have the power to do so. He said the ruling was devastating for al-Turki’s wife and children in Saudi Arabia. Al-Turki, a linguist who was living and working in Colorado, was convicted in 2006 of unlawful sexual contact by use of force, false imprisonment and other counts. He was sentenced to eight years to life in prison. He denied the allegations, saying he was a victim of anti-Muslim sentiment. Probation would have allowed him to

Tax revenue from the two money sources have been fantastic for state coffers, generating $430 million from casino slot machines alone in the peak fiscal year of 2007 and a total of $6.5 billion since the arrival of slots in 1993. After a hike in the tax to $3.40 per pack, cigarettes fetched another $421 million for the state during the 2012 fiscal year. But state officials say those totals are no longer sustainable. Long a sure bet with virtually guaranteed profits, gambling has been transformed into a fast-changing industry as six of the 12 casinos in Atlantic City have filed for bankruptcy in the past six years.

shouting, “We found it!’’ as a crowd broke out in applause. The historic bible — with “The White House” embossed on the front — is one of several in a collection held at the FDR Presidential Library in upstate Hyde Park. According to library director Lynn Bassanese, who loaned the tome to de Blasio, FDR had signed the Bible. “Since FDR signed it and dated it for his very first inauguration, we thought that was particularly symbolic for the mayor-elect,” she said. A member of the New York Public Library contacted the folks at the FDR library about borrowing a Bible, she said. Bassanese said she planned to personally bring the book to the swearingin, and vowed to “wait there for the ceremony to be done and then I will carry it back.’’

In Connecticut, the slot-machine revenues to the state from Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun are collapsing, and are now predicted to drop to $212 million in the 2017 fiscal year — a stunning turnaround that is blamed on increased gambling competition in New York, Rhode Island and elsewhere. Meanwhile, the state recently projected that cigarette tax revenues will drop from the $421 million peak to $348 million by 2018. Of more than 25 major tax categories, revenue from gambling and smoking represent the two largest declines in the Connecticut budget. To be sure, the overall numbers are still high, as gambling and smoking are still projected to account for more revenue than inheritance, real estate conveyance and alcohol taxes combined. “Whenever we were in a jam, the only taxes that were seen as permissible to raise

were the sin taxes,’’ said House Republican leader Larry Cafero, who has served in the legislature since 1993. Said the lawmaker: “Just this last year, we were short, so we decided to throw keno in the mix. We’re the classic poster child for this, whether it’s cigarette money, booze money, gambling money. All those quick fixes aren’t working. It’s a wake-up call on how we look at taxes and our state budget.’’ State officials are already projecting that the general population will be taking on an increased tax burden. The personal income tax now generates about 51 percent of general fund revenues, and that share is projected to rise to 58 percent by the 2018 fiscal year. And the good sign is that Connecticut’s two casinos, meanwhile, have thousands fewer slot machines than in the peak years, with a combined total of about 11,365 slots now operating.

look at photos of women in bathing suits or undergarments. They also said he would have to confess to the crimes, which he could not do because he was challenging his conviction. Another attorney for al-Turki, John Portman of Denver, said his client was considering another challenge based on court rules that allowed people whose appeals had been denied to contest convictions on several grounds, including newly discovered evidence.

Cabbie killed in Queens after hitting parked cars BY A STAFF WRITER

A

cabbie was killed on January 3 afternoon when his out-ofcontrol car zigzagged down a Queens street and slammed into two parked vehicles. The police said Ved Wadhwa, 56, was driving his yellow cab south on 118th St. New York at 3.30 pm when the vehicle suddenly veered to the left and hit a parked car. The taxi bounced off the parked vehicle and jerked to the right, striking a second car across the street before coming to a stop. Paramedics rushed Wadhwa to Jamaica Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

chaumburg Township Assessor John R. Lawson’s office, along with the Cook County Board of Review, is hosting a seminar for residential property owners on January 7 The free-for-public seminar to be held at Schaumburg Township Hall, One Illinois Blvd, Hoffman Estates, IL 60169, will educate taxpayers on how to file a successful tax appeal in a time when the economy is putting added pressures to home owners. The event includes a short presentation by Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Patlak explaining how property taxes are calculated and the appeal procedure. A media release also advises taxpayers to bring a copy of their second installment tax bill to the seminar. According to Lawson, this will be the last opportunity Schaumburg Township homeowners will have through the Cook County Board of Review before the fall 2014 tax bills. “It is very important to appeal your assessed value” he said, adding that a successful appeal on the assessed value will take effect on the second installment of the 2013 tax bill payable in 2014. “It is crucial that property owners are not over assessed”, said Lawson who encourages any residential property owner to appeal against their assessed value even if they recently appealed with the Cook County Assessor’s Office.

aints and mystics throughout the ages have told us that everything in this world is perishable. Only our soul is eternal.” Contemporary saint, His Holiness Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, in his 2014 New Year’s message urges people to consider this when making the first-of-the-year resolutions. He says: “At this time of year, most people have two major decisions to make. The first is

what holiday gifts we want to receive. The second is what New Year’s resolutions we want to make.” “Masters give a different perspective on life. They point out that any gifts or resolutions related to this physical world, our body, and our mind are not lasting. They are perishable”, says Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, head of Science of Spirituality, an international, multi-faith organization dedicated to personal transformation through meditation. “The most lasting gift we can give ourselves and our loved ones is learning how to meditate on the inner Light and Sound. Through meditation, we connect with an eternal source of all happiness, love, and Light that does not perish. The best resolution we can make is to meditate daily”, advises Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, internationally recognized spiritual master of meditation on the inner light and sound. “Of all the resolutions we can make for our body and mind, the one with the most lasting benefit is meditation as that enriches our soul. This year we can benefit the most by placing meditation on the inner Light and Sound at the top of our gift wish list.”, concludes the highly respected Sant, who was honored recently by the Indian American Medical Association of Illinois.

St. Louis Archdiocese under fire for remark on world religions

eries of presentations have been scheduled at a parish under Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Louis (Missouri, USA) about various world religions with the tagline “Learn what they know, so you know what they need to know.” “A free series of presentations for students to seniors” by Benedictine Father Michael G. Brunner from January 4 to March 1 on Saturdays at Saint Anselm Parish Centre in Creve Coeur (Missouri) includes Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism and Islam. The flyer, created to announce these world religions series contains the tagline “Learn what they know, so you know what they need to know.” Distinguished religious statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) has said that this “need to know” tagline was highly inappropriate reference to great world religions. Zed, who is the president of the Universal

Society of Hinduism, said: “We all should be more sensitive and respectful while talking about other religions. “Need to know” kind of statement even seemed to be contrary to the highly inclusive approach of His Holiness Pope Francis and the mission of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis (established in 1826), which included “fostering unity in diversity”.

Rajan Zed urged Archbishop of Saint Louis Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Washington DC to clarify their stand on the issue. Zed noted that various religions were basically different human responses to divine Ultimate Reality, adding that dialogue would bring mutual enrichment.

HIGH-NECK blouses in vogue

The vintage fashion of high-neck blouses are once again making inroads into the Indian fashion scene NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI

T

aking a leaf out of the latest red carpet looks of Bollywood ladies Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor, the vintage fashion of high-neck blouses are once again making inroads into the Indian fashion

scene, designers say. From short, traditional koti to a mid-sleeved tailored jacket to a kameez, the fashion runway has seen many a trend emerging. But high-neck blouses are the latest to grab the fashionistas’ attention.

They are not only subtle and sexy but also easy to match with any attire - Indian or Western. Also, what better time than the chilly winter to carry off the look? “High-neck blouses are back in fashion, they are easy to match with any attire, one can team them up with different types of lowers such as cigarette pants or pallazos or one can also wear them under jackets. They easily suit almost all body types,” designer Kapil Arora told IANS. Designer Pria Kataaria Puri said that “such blouses have a very Victorian look and project a very vintage image. Also, they can be worn on formal and informal occasions and they look very sensuous and stylish.” No wonder then that India’s celebrities chose the style statement for some high-profile events. Deepika sported a stylish high-neck blouse and minimal jewellery with an Anamika Khanna sari for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s birthday bash, while Kareena had also opted for a high-neck blouse with a net sari for the inauguration ceremony of an annual business conclave last year. Who can forget Vidya’s look at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2013? She made several heads turn with her Sabyasachi Mukherjee attire.

esigner Pam Mehta says keeping your body type in mind is very important when buying a stylish gown. “For a pear-shaped body, one should opt for Aline gowns with plunging neckline, halter or embellished neckline. Someone with an apple-shaped body can go for an empire or dropped waist gowns and these people should avoid embroidery, drapes around mid-section,” Mehta told IANS. “Women with heavy arms can go for gowns with bell sleeves while plus size women should avoid gowns which are too loose. Instead, go for good fit, not fitted, but well draped ones,” she added. Mehta has launched a range of flowy and colorful gowns. She has used subtle nude and sea green to fuchsia, blue and purple for the line which has been launched under her label Kisneel by Pam. Women with a short height are often told to avoid gowns, but Mehta tells otherwise. “A woman with a short height can go in for princess style or sheath style gowns. Empire and mermaid styles have also been popular if the fit is right,” she said. “For a dropped neckline keep your hair open and soft curls can look good too. One can accessorize the look with a nice pair of stilettos and a nice clutch. Depending on the look of the gown, one can wear a sleek pendant drop or a chunky necklace,” Mehta said.

Dazzle your winter wear New Year calls for new look with chandelier earrings IANS, LONDON

NEW DELHI: Winter can leave you confused about how to team jewellery with your clothes. But just a pair of right chandelier earrings can add a dazzle to your look, suggests designer Annu Chadha, who says that designs in diamond, polki and rubies are very much in trend. Chadha has come up with a range of chandelier earrings. “The spectacular collection is designed keeping in mind the winter outfits which restrict your jewellery options as most of it gets hidden under long sleeves and high necks,” Chadha said in a statement. “This collection has an amalgamation of diamonds, polkis and precious stones to suit your every mood. Whether it is a wedding or a dinner or even a casual day out with friends, Jewels by Annu Chadha has a pair for you. Go on, indulge yourself,” she added.

Plant remedy for cancer

Chemicals found in some plants may act as boosters for anti-cancer drugs thereby reducing debilitating side-effects, reveals a new study SAHANA GHOSH, KOLKATA

hat do tea, turmeric and broccoli have in common? A lot, when it comes to an arsenal of certain chemicals found in them, called phytochemicals, that can be harnessed to combat cancer therapy side-effects in synergy with conventional anti-cancer drugs. Chemotherapy is fraught with side-effects. Now Indian scientists have shown how certain naturally-occurring plant chemicals when used in combination with routine cancer drugs can actually lower the dosage of the medication, thereby minimizing the aftereffects.

Moreover, phytochemicals (plant chemicals) may increase the efficiency of the drugs, said Madhumita Roy, head of the Environmental Carcinogenesis and Toxicology Department at Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) here, who led the study. “Our data suggest that treatment of cells with these phytochemicals in conjunction with chemotherapeutic drugs resulted in the same extent of cell killing at a much lower concentration of the drug,” Roy told IANS. Some examples of the plant-derived chemicals include curcumin found in turmeric, polyphenols found in tea — both green and black — and isothiocyanates that are common in cauliflowers, cabbages, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, among others. These agents, in tandem with anti-cancer drugs, Roy

explained, reduce the levels of certain proteins which are elevated in cancer. This, in turn, sensitizes the deadly cancer cells to opt for suicide — a process called apoptosis. Besides fighting cancer, phytochemicals can also play a key role in cancer prevention. Another facet of these phytochemicals is that they are non-toxic to the human body. According to CNCI director Jaydip Biswas, since the treatment protocols for cancer are not only expensive but also cause severe side-effects, “plant derived products with anti-cancer potential may come to the rescue. They may improve the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.”

into a fine powder. Then add it to shampoo that you would use to wash your hair with. Once it’s in lather, let it remain in the hair for one to two minutes and then rinse. Then wash the hair again with normal shampoo in order to eliminate any powder that may remain. Aspirin contains salicylates, which is the active ingredient in dandruff shampoos that contain salicylic acid. n NATURAL OILS: Oils like coconut, almond or olive can

ry changing the color of the plate you eat from to lose weight, a new study says. It helps in cutting the portion size of your diet if you change the color of your eating plate from white to some brighter shades, reports femalefirst.co.uk. A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research reveals that the more significant the contrast between the color of the food on the plate and the color of the plate itself, the less likely we will overload the plate. The research shows that the actual colors of the food or the plates make no difference; what matters is the difference between the two.

If you put the rice on a, say, red plate, the portions will be smaller For example, if you present pasta covered in a red tomato sauce on a red plate or plain white rice on a white plate, you’ll over serve, however, if you serve the mentioned pasta on a white plate and put the rice on a red plate, the portions will be smaller. “The research is clear, from the age of about four, we eat with our eyes, not our stomachs. With these kind of visual, environmental cues that can be easily integrated in a lifestyle, people can mindlessly lose weight in a way that leads to permanent change,” nutrition specialist Melina Jampolis t o l d Forbes magazine.

be used to keep the scalp moisturized and prevent dandruff. Simply warm up some oil in a bowl and apply with a scalp massage, ensuring that the entire scalp is covered. Wrap the hair and scalp in a towel and leave the oil on overnight. Then rinse the hair in the morning. n VINEGAR: It can be used to keep your scalp from becoming flaky. After washing your hair, mix two cups of apple cider vinegar with two cups of cold water and use to rinse the shampoo from your hair. Alternatively, you could apply white vinegar to the scalp and leave it on overnight with a towel, and then wash out of the hair with regular shampoo the next day.

Your week ahead... Aries This is one of those weeks when, if you go looking for career answers, you will find them. This also applies to your non-profit role, voluntary position or student placement.

Taurus Christmas Day appears to have been quite a moment for you, even if nobody else was really paying attention. At that point you took the controls and steered your own spiritual, foreign, internet, publishing or academic agenda.

Gemini You were experimenting constantly last year with different ways to get control with your money. What you successfully avoided doing was confronting the really big transformations that would actually have a lasting impact!

Cancer Very rapidly, in the space of a few weeks, destiny has intervened and you have found yourself faced with the real deal, in terms of your partner. This applies to your former or potential partner too – and to any opponents.

Leo If you feel pushed to change the way you sleep, eat, drink, exercise, work and play then what happens around Monday, Tuesday and Saturday is really important. This is a brief episode in a much bigger story.

Virgo This is one of those phases of the year when the more you reach out for answers, the more you will find. This also applies to professional or part-time projects involving much younger people.

(January 9-15) Libra It looks as though one or two organizations have pushed their own agenda at the expense of yours, and throughout 2013 you have been trying to keep a handle on the familyor homeland with varying degrees of success.

Scorpio A nameless ‘something’ may even now be very much in charge of your internet life . If it’s not a ‘something’ then perhaps you can point the finger at people who have been concerned with their own agenda to the exclusion of yours.

Sagittarius At last the tools are all in front of you. For your next trick, you have to actually use them and make changes real. Doing so will give you firm control over your money, business, house, charity, flat or possessions.

Capricorn It’s all very new, but you are right to be optimistic about the way your image, look or brand could develop this year. Something has come along in recent weeks and propelled you in a direction that was always so obvious.

Aquarius Pluto transits are intense and relentless, but they also serve you in the end. This is the case at the moment even if your best friend or lover isn’t entirely aware of what is going on.

Pisces Things have certainly improved with your group project in recent weeks. A smart decision has been pushed on you. Acceptance has changed everything and made you far more hopeful about the future. — Jessica Adams
