S President Donald Trump signed into law the $717 billion annual defense policy bill, the earliest in the year the bill has become law in more than four decades. “The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is the most significant investment in our military and our warfighters in modern history, and I am very proud to be a big, big part of it,” Trump said before signing the bill this week. “It was not very hard. You know, I went to Congress, I said let’s do it, we got to do it. We’re going to strengthen our military like never, ever before, and that’s what we did,” he said. Trump signed the bill during a

300 priests accused of abusing thousands of children in US WASHINGTON: Internal documents from six Catholic dioceses in the US state of Pennsylvania showed that over 300 “predator priests” have been credibly accused of sexually abusing thousands of children, according to a grand jury report. “We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands,” CNN quoted the report as saying this week. “Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. The bill also gives troops a 2.6 percent pay raise, the highest in nine years, The Hill reported. This week, Trump made no mention of the bill’s namesake. With the NDAA signed into law, Congress now turns its attention to passing a defense spending bill to make the dollar amounts authorized by the NDAA a reality. The House passed a Pentagon spending bill in June, while the Senate is expected to start considering its version as soon as this week.
hite House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said this week that she could not “guarantee” that US President Donald Trump had never used the word “nigger” to refer to blacks, after the accusation of an African American former adviser who said that she has tapes proving that he said it. Sanders noted at her daily press briefing that Trump has specifically denied using the term on Twitter adding that “I can certainly say I’ve never heard him use that term or anything similar”. Sanders said, however, that she “can’t guarantee” that the President had never used the pejorative term since she had not been at every working meeting he had ever held in the White House, Efe reported. The White House spokesman
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee (Photo: IANS)
was responding to the accusations of Omarosa Manigault-Newman, the former Trump advisor on African American issues, who said that she has audiotapes on which the president uses the term “nig-
ger”, considered taboo in the US because of its demeaning and heavily racist tone, not to mention its links with slavery. Sanders said that ManigaultNewman’s comments were regrettable and charged her with a lack of “integrity” for — by her own admission — having secretly taped conversations with the president and other top administration officials. Trump, meanwhile, in a Twitter message on August 14 morning responding to Manigault-Newman’s remarks, said: “When you give a crazed, crying lowlife a break, and give her a job at the White House, I guess it just didn’t work out. Good work by General Kelly for quickly firing that dog!” Referring to the harshness of those insults, Sanders said that the president was expressing “his frustration” with the ex-adviser.
Young women unhappy with Trump’s presidency IANS, WASHINGTON
S
even in 10 American women aged between 18 and 35 years old are dissatisfied or angry about the Donald Trump’s presidency, the highest percentage of any age group of women in the US, according to a poll released this week. Only 9 percent of them say they are happy with Trump in the White House, Xinhua quoted a CBS NewsRefinery29 survey as saying. Among this woman age group, 53 per cent think Trump’s policies
have mostly hurt women, while 70 percent feel their rights and liberties are being threatened rather than protected by what’s going on in Washington. By more than three to one, younger women prefer the Democratic Party win control of Congress. More of these women identify as Democrats than Republicans in the first place, the poll showed. However, it isn’t certain that many of them will turn out, the poll revealed, citing this women age group is the least likely of any age group to say they will definitely vote
in the 2018 midterm election: only 30 percent say they definitely will, far lower than among older women (76 percent say they will vote). The top reason of these women who say they may not vote this year is not being interested in politics and elections (31 percent), followed by not feeling like their vote matters (19 percent), not liking the candidates running (14 percent), and being too busy (14 percent). The survey is conducted by YouGov which interviewed 2,093 US female adults online between July 26 and 30.

Forex reserves comfortable to counter rupee fall: Jaitley Geo-political pressures, along with outflows of foreign funds and high crude oil prices dragged the Indian rupee to its record low IANS, NEW DELHI
A
day after the rupee fell to its record low, Union Minister Arun Jaitley said on Wednesday that India holds sufficient foreign exchange reserves to mitigate any undue volatility in the foreign exchange market. Geo-political pressures, along with outflows of foreign funds and high crude oil prices dragged the Indian rupee to its lowest ever intraday level of over 70 against the US dollar on Tuesday when it plunged to 70.08 — the lowest ever — against the greenback. However, intervention by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and stabilization in the global currency markets pared the rupee’s early fall. Research Organization the target to be achieved in the next four years, Sivan told IANS: “Our plan is to have a human being in space for seven days and not less than that. “He will be in a spacecraft, 300400 km above earth,” Sivan said, as he explained that the rocket to be used for the manned mission would be a Geosynchronous Satel-

According to analysts, the rupee’s swift move past 69 happened due to foreign institutional investor outflows and the impact of global sentiment. “On a medium term basis, the rupee will need to depreciate further to keep up with the inflation differentials with other trading partners. However there could be a minor reversal of this depreciation on a short term basis when the global situation stabilizes,” said ICICI Bank Global Markets Head B. In his Independence Day address to the nation, Modi said: “In space technology, we have dreamt something; our scientists have dreamt something. And I am happy to announce that by 2022, the 75th Independence year, we are planning a manned space mission. “We will put an Indian in space by 2022 or earlier,” Modi said. Asked about the first animal flight before the actual manned mission, Sivan said those things have to be discussed.
BRIEFS Pro-Khalistan rally raises questions NEW DELHI: Describing the proKhalistan rally in London by the Sikhs as a conspiracy to divide the country, the Congress on Monday questioned the Narendra Modi-led government’s silence on it. “As a sinister conspiracy is hatched to revive militancy in Punjab, why are BJP-Akali Dal mum? Why has the 56’ Modi government been stunned into a conspiratorial silence? Isn’t it a conspiracy to break the country? Why silence then?” Congress spokesman Pradeep Singh Surjewala said in a tweet attaching a news report about the pro-Khalistan rally. The Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a human rights advocacy group with radical leanings, held what it calls a “London Declaration” on an independence referendum for Punjab at Trafalgar Square in London on Sunday.
Ashutosh quits Aam Aadmi Party NEW DELHI: Senior leader Ashutosh jolted the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday by quitting it citing personal reasons, but AAP convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal refused to let him go. Ashutosh, who joined the party in 2014 after being a journalist for 23 years, took to Twitter to announce he was quitting and thanking the party for its support. “Every journey has an end. My association with AAP which was beautiful/revolutionary has also an end. I have resigned from the party (and) requested (it) to accept the same,” he tweeted. “It is purely from a very very personal reason. Thanks to (the) party (and those) who supported me throughout. Thanks,” he added. Retweeting Ashutosh’s tweet, Kejriwal said he cannot accept the resignation, at least in this lifetime. —IANS

eteran parliamentarian Somnath Chatterjee, the first Communist Speaker of the Lok Sabha who had defied his party’s call to quit the post, died here on Monday following a cardiac arrest and prolonged old age-related illness. Chatterjee was given a 21 gun salute in the West Bengal Assembly, while the nation mourned the death of the barrister-turnedpolitician, known for championing the cause of the downtrodden. due to a kidney-related ailment and put on ventilator support. A former Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member, Chatterjee was Lok Sabha Speaker during the first United Progressive Alliance (UPA-1) rule from 2004 to 2009. It was during this stint that direct telecast of the Zero Hour started in 2004, while the Lok Sabha television channel came into existence in 2006. However, on July 23, 2008, Chatterjee was expelled from the Communist Party of India-Marxist “for seriously compromising the position of the party” as he refused

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying glowing tributes to Chatterjee. Calling him “a veteran parliamentarian who had a forceful presence in the House”, the President tweeted: “A loss for public life in Bengal and India. My condolences to his family and innumerable well-wishers.” Modi described Chatterjee as a stalwart of Indian politics who made parliamentary democracy richer.

T
he UN Security Council (UNSC) has condemned the attack on an education center in the Afghan capital that killed at least 48 people as “heinous and cowardly”. In a press statement released on Wednesday, the Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constituted one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. The UNSC underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these acts of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice. Members of the Council also expressed their sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Afghanistan government and wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured.

Pak elects National Assembly Speaker ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser was elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly or the lower house of the country’s Parliament on Wednesday, beating PPP stalwart Khursheed Shah, who was fielded by an alliance of the opposition parties. Qaiser received 176 votes to be elected to the speakership, whereas Shah got 146 votes. The election took place through a secret ballot. A total of 330 votes were cast, out of which 322 were accepted and eight were rejected, Dawn online reported.
London attack: Trump urges toughness WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump urged that tough action be taken against the person responsible for the alleged terrorist attack on Tuesday morning in front of the UK Parliament in London. “Another terrorist attack in London...These animals are crazy and must be dealt with through toughness and strength!” Trump tweeted. At least three people were injured when intentionally hit by a car Tuesday morning. A man was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses after a car crashed into a number of cyclists and pedestrians before hitting security barriers outside the UK Parliament on Tuesday, the police said.

UN General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak called the attack “unacceptable”, adding that the General Assembly continued to stand against terrorism and with Afghanistan.
Up to 48 students were killed and 67 others injured in the suicide bomb blast on the private education center in Kabul’s Dashte-Barchi area. No group claimed the responsibility for the attack.
MAIMANA (AFGHANISTAN): At least 17 Afghan soldiers were killed after Taliban militants overran an Army base in the northern part of the country following a three-day intense fighting, officials said on Tuesday. The clashes started last Saturday after hundreds of Taliban militants stormed and besieged Camp-eChenayeeha base in remote Ghormach district of Faryab province in which about 106 Army soldiers were stationed, Xinhua news agency reported. The Taliban attack in the north coincided with clashes in southeastern province of Ghazni, which lies on the main highway linking Kabul
with the south. Hundreds of people have been killed or injured during clashes there since last week. Heavy clashes and airstrikes were reported on Tuesday as fighting in the city entered the fifth day. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that residents of Ghazni were struggling to access basic services and medical care. “The besieged soldiers showed stiff resistance and fought back the attackers for the past three days but the base was captured by militants as the soldiers received no help or supplies despite repeated requests,” said Sebghatullah Selaab, an official from the provincial council.

escue teams were continuing on Thursday their search for possible survivors among the rubble of a bridge that collapsed in Genoa in northwestern Italy, killing at least 39 and injuring 16. Although there were still no official figures on the number of people missing, Italian authorities did not rule out a possibility of a dozen bodies trapped under the rubble. The search and rescue operations were concentrated among the cement blocks of the pillar, which collapsed along the left bank of the Polcevera River, Efe news reported. Meanwhile, 15 people continued to be hospitalized in the San Martino hospital, nine of whom were in a

obel Prize-winning writer V.S. Naipaul, known for his celebrated works like “An Area of Darkness” and “A House for Mr Biswas”, has died at age 85. The literary fraternity mourned his passing and said his rich legacy will live on for generations to come. No sooner did Lady Nadira Naipaul confirm on Sunday morning that her husband had died
peacefully in London, condolence messages from readers and admirers flooded the social media. He was a giant in all that he achieved and he died surrounded by those he loved, having lived a life which was full of wonderful creativity and endeavour,” Lady Naipaul said. investigation into the incident. A roughly 100-meter section of Morandi Bridge collapsed amid torrential rains on Tuesday, sending dozens of vehicles crashing onto a riverbed, railway lines and two warehouses. The government on Wednesday said it would be revoking concessions to Autostrade per l’Italia, the company that manages the country’s highways, following the accident. “The leaders of Autostrade per l’Italia must resign, first of all. And given that there have been serious breaches, we have activated procedures for the possible revocation of their concessions and to impose fines of up to 150 million euro ($170 million),” said Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli. Notwithstanding their differences with Naipaul, both were confident that his works would be read by generations to come. Rushdie, who himself has Indian roots, said he had disagreed with Naipaul on politics and literature but felt sad “as if I just lost a beloved older brother”. Added writer-historian William Dalrymple: “Even if you disagreed with much that he wrote, particularly about India, you couldn’t help be stimulated, influenced and catalyzed by the brilliance of his laser sharp vision.” Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul was born in 1932 in Chaguanas on the island of Trinidad and Tobago to a family that had arrived from India in the 1880s.

F
ulfilling a long-cherished dream, Indian adventurist Shital Rane-Mahajan on August 15 dived from over 5,000 feet in Finland with a Tricolor to mark India’s 72nd Independence Day. The Tricolor, measuring 10 feet by six feet, was handed over to Shital by Indian Ambassador to Finland, (Ms) Vani Rao after the IDay celebrations by the Indian community settled in Helsinki. “From Helsinki, we drove down to the Utti Skydiving Centre, around 100 km away, for the skyjump, which was absolutely smooth and successful,” an elated Shital told IANS on phone from Finland. The 36-year-old, a mother of two, said that the weather was perfect for the adventure and that she jumped off an aircraft from 5,000 feet and landed at the designated spot, with the huge flag fluttering all through the descent. “It all happened within 100 seconds. I stepped out of the aircraft, opened my parachute and then the flag bag tied to my waist, unfurled the Tricolor and continued with my dive,” Shital said. Awaiting below on terra firma was her anxious husband Vaibhav and her nine-year-old twin sons Vrushabh and Vaishnav, besides a large number of onlookers who cheered her. Though Shital — a
India taking its rightful place as leading global power: US WASHINGTON: Greeting India on its 72nd Independence Day, US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo this week said a “fellow democracy and a friend” was taking its rightful place as a leading global power with its democratic values and inclusiveness. “On behalf of the Government of the United States of America, I extend my best wishes to the people and government of India on their Independence Day. Since gaining its independence 71 years ago today, India has set an example for South Asia and the world by supporting democracy, diversity, and the rule of law-values shared by the US,” Pompeo said in a statement. “As members of the oldest and largest democracies, the people of

the US and India have always enjoyed strong bonds of friendship. “Now, my ambition is to skydive with the Tricolor in India, especially since civilian skydiving of certain categories has been banned in the country since 2002,” she said. In February, Shital hit the headlines when she skydived from 13,000 feet over Pattaya, Thailand, sporting a colorful ‘Nav-wari Sari’ (traditional Maharashtrian nineyard sari).

Indian community celebrates Independence Day in Poland WARSAW: The Indian communitybased in the Polish capital celebrated the 72nd Independence Day this week with great patriotic fervor. Hundreds of Indians along with their Polish friends assembled in the Indian Embassy early morning and were greeted by newly-appointed Indian Ambassador Tsewang Namgyal. Namgyal unfurled the tricolor and joined the people there when the national anthem was played at the venue. He then read a message by President Ram Nath Kovind delivered on the eve of Independence Day.
Addressing the Indian community in Poland, Namgyal said: “You are an important bridge between the two important nations. Your hard work and your commitment speaks (for) itself.” Kirti Gahlwat, a yoga teacher sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), displayed her talent and mesmerized the audience with her remarkable asanas. She was followed by Kathak dancer Jigna Dixit, who was also sponsored by the ICCR to promote the dance form in Poland. Dixit was joined by several Polish students.

team of Indian-American researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City, has used an ingenious process to enable curcumin to kill cancer cells. Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric (haldi), the ubiquitous kitchen spice that gives curry its yellow color. Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb because of its powerful anti-inflammatory and strong antioxidant property. Curcumin is also known to exhibit anti-cancer properties, but its poor solubility in water had impeded curcumin’s clinical application in cancer. A drug needs to be soluble in water as otherwise it will not flow through the bloodstream. Despite decades of research, the

development of efficient strategies that can effectively deliver poorly water-soluble curcumin to cancer cells had remained a challenge. A team headed by Dipanjan Pan, associate professor of bioengineering

of a combination of platinum and curcumin. “It is a combination of clever chemistry and nano-precipitation utilising host guest chemistry,” Pan explained. “The sophisticated chemistry leads to self-assembled hierarchical structure that drives the solubility of curcumin and
simultaneously delivers an additional anticancer agent, i.e. platinum. The combined therapeutic effect — of curcumin and platinum — is lethal for the cancer cells.” The team has reported its work in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” in the US. According to their report, the metallocyclic complex created using platinum “not only enabled curcumin’s solubility, but proved to be 100 times more effective in treating various cancer types such as melanoma and breast cancer cells than using curcumin and platinum agents separately”. “Our results demonstrate that curcumin works completely in sync with platinum and exerts synergistic effect to show remarkable anticancer properties,” says the report. “The platinum-curcumin combination kills the cells by fragmenting its DNA.”

MUMBAI: Former India cricket captain Ajit Wadekar passed away this week after a prolonged illness. He was 77. Wadekar, who played 37 Tests, led India to historic triumphs in the West Indies and England in the 1970s. Under him, India won five matches in the West Indies in the early 1970s before beating England in a three-match series. Wadekar, who scored 2,113 Test runs with 14 half centuries and a century, led India to a third successive series victory, beating England once again in 1972-73. He also appeared in two Oneday Internationals. An aggressive left-handed batsman, Wadekar made his first class debut in 1958-59 before making his India debut in 1966-67. ormer BCCI chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has backed the inclusion of rookie wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in India’s playing XI for the third cricket Test against England, starting at Trent Bridge last week. Already in the backfoot after losing the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s, India find themselves in a must-win situation in the fivematch Test rubber with all eyes on the non-performing batting order with the exception of skipper Virat Kohli. Vengsarkar, who was the chairman of selectors when Kohli made
his debut, has now called for the inclusion of the explosive southpaw in the playing XI. “Rishabh Pant should get in. Apart from Kohli, nobody has shown that they could score runs
here. Whether it’s English or Australian conditions, you have to adapt quickly. You have to apply yourself and get runs,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by BBC Radio. “You have to give respect to the bowlers,” he added. If Pant gets his maiden Test cap in Nottingham, that means Dinesh Karthik will be shown the door. Karthik, with scores of 0, 20, 1 and 0 in the four innings so far, has failed to justify his inclusion in the side. Swathed in sepia tones and bright rusty colors denoting a time that has clocked the past but not been forgotten in the present, the look of the film is so vivid and nostalgic, it conveys both regret and urgency. Female directors reflexively gravitate towards the correct colors to convey a past that could well return sometime very soon in the future. Manto’s controversial writing, his vivid description of sexual violence and political turmoil, have been discussed and damned for decades. He is relevant to our times even if we have moved on to Chetan Bhagat. —IANS
‘Satyameva Jayate’ is a film for masses
I
t is easy enough to ridicule Satyameva Jayate. God knows, it renders itself vulnerable to severe slamming. It wears its jingoistic patriotism on the sleeve and every other visible part of its canvas, growing more and more shrill with every frame and dialogue. Yup, these kinds of tactless films get easily trolled, or stoned as we earlier used to refer to the savage lynching of crude cinema. But hang on. Satyameva Jayate (SJ) is not designed for those who dug their grey cells into Newton and came out feeling like alumni on a space odyssey. This is a film for the masses, the commoners who everyday have to face discrimination and corruption on the streets where a lot of people don’t just work but also live sleep and defecate. Road rage for them is not about a dent in their gleaming cars. It’s about survival. For all its sins of loutish characterization and aural extravagance the film throws a very opportune question at us: why do we tolerate corruption in our system on such a hideously aggravated scale? Is cor-

The corruption in the police force, which this film, takes on headlong, is specially worrisome. If a society doesn’t have law enforcers who do their jobs honestly, the law-breaks are bound to be on a rampage.
Early on in this lengthy anti-corruption diatribe swathed in a flagfluttering fury, a street hawker’s wife comes under a rich man’s wheel. He moans, wails and pleads for justice while the cop on duty cackles and taunts, “You are trash and trash needs to be treated like this. Too crass for your tastes? Well, let me tell you I’ve seen a cop react exactly this way to a destitute man’s lamentation on the street. Truth can often be much cruder than fiction. —Subhash K Jha

uch as he was revered as a stalwart politician, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who passed away at the age of 93, was widely recognized as a key poet in Hindi, who took poetry beyond the pages of his collections and recited them at numerous public fora. He used poetry as a medium to give expression to his deepest thoughts. As the news of his sad demise plunged the nation into mourning, his
eloquent verses came swimming before the eyes of his admirers. One particular episode that deserves mention took place in the year 1988 when the Bharat Ratna awardee was in the United States for kidney treatment. In a letter to playwright and his contemporary Dharamvir Bharati from the United States during his treatment days, Vajpayee said he peeped into the eyes of death” and captured the agony in a poem titled Maut se than gayi (Faceoff with death). survival loomed large, Vajpayee described in the poem that he had almost accepted the end. “I had no intention of fighting/ there was no promise of meeting again/ she (death) blocked the path and stood on the way/ in a moment she became larger than life,” he wrote. In the letter originally written in Hindi, Vajpayee added: Maut ki umar kya hai? Do pal bhi nahin/ Zindagi silsila aajkal ki nahin/ Main ji bhar jia/ Main man se maru/ Lautkar aaonga/ Kuch se kyun darun, reflecting that death too is temporary and lasts only for a while in an ageless cycle of life. The former Prime Minister noted that he had lived to the fullest and would die with satisfaction, and would again return from his travels.

Vajpayee: A man of moderation who raised India’s global stature Former PM stunned the world by making India a declared nuclear state and then almost went to war with Pak before making peace with it in the most dramatic fashion IANS, NEW DELHI
H
e was a man of moderation in a fraternity of jingoistic nationalists; a peace visionary in a region riven by religious animosity; and a man who believed in India’s destiny and was ready to fight for it. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (93), who died on August 16, will go down in history as a person who tried to end years of hostility with Pakistan and put development on the front burner of the country’s political agenda. He was also the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete a full five-year term. Even though he lived the last 13 years of his life in virtual isolation, dogged by debilitating illnesses and bedridden, he has left an enduring legacy for the nation and the region where he was much loved and respected across the political spectrum and national boundaries, including in Pakistan. In the tumultuous period he presided over the destiny of the world’s largest democracy, Vajpayee stunned the world by making India a declared nuclear state and then almost went to war with Pakistan before making peace with it in the most dramatic fashion. In the process, his popularity came to match that of Indira Gandhi, a
woman he admired for her guts even as he hated her politics. After despairing for years that he would never become Prime Minister and was destined to remain an opposition leader all his life, he achieved his goal, but only for 13 days, from May 16-28, 1996, after his deputy, L.K. Advani, chose not to contest elections that year. His second term came on March 19, 1998, and lasted 13 months, a period during which India stunned the world by undertaking a series of nuclear tests that invited global
unprecedented ways. The BJP’s election strategy rested on seeking a renewed mandate over three broad pillars of achievement that the government claimed — political stability in spite of the pulls and pressures of running a multiparty coalition; a “shining” economy that saw a dizzying 10.4 percent growth
ATAL BIHARI VAJPAYEE (1924-2018) reproach and sanctions. Although his tenure again proved short-lived, his and his government’s enhanced stature following the world-defying blasts enabled him to return as Prime Minister for the third time on October 13, 1999, a tenure that lasted a full five-year term. When finally he stepped down in May 2004, after an election that he was given to believe he would win, it marked the end of a long and eventful political career spanning six decades. Vajpayee had gone into these elections riding a personality cult that projected him as a man who had brought glory to the nation in
in the last quarter of the previous year; and peace with Pakistan that changed the way the two countries looked at each other for over 50 years. The results of the elections could not have come as a greater shock to a man who was hailed for his achievements and who was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 influential men of the decade.
‘Who’s going to listen to the voice of sanity?’ TARUN BASU, NEW DELHI
I
t was the summer of 1996. The Congress government of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao had lost the general election and, for the first time, there was an opportunity for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), headed by the moderate and well-liked Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to take power. He lacked parliamentary majority but nevertheless made the bid to form a government and become Prime Minister — an ambition that he had long nurtured but which seemed elusive despite being in public life as a popular leader for long. The moment it became clear that Vajpayee would be the man

to lead the next government in India, I made a beeline to his house at 5 Raisina Road which was almost a stone’s throw from the Press Club of India. Vajpayee
was a people’s man and security was light around him those days. I and a colleague, Mayank Chhaya, opened the gates of his bungalow and walked in to his secretary’s
office. I asked his aides if he was busy. One of them pointed outside the window. There, standing all by himself, in an inconspicuous corner of the bungalow, seemingly staring into space, was the man of the moment — in his trademark starched white dhoti and collarless kurta — who would be the Prime Minister of India in a few days. We congratulated him. He smiled and ushered us in. Vajpayee had often wondered aloud whether he would forever remain prime minister-in-waiting as the BJP, with its hardline Hindu nationalist ideology, was not a popular favorite of the country then. But Vajpayee, with his affable personality, riveting oratory,
an image of moderation and with friends across parties was one name that was being talked about as an acceptable alternative for those who were getting increasingly disillusioned with the corruption-tainted Congress. Vajpayee, then 71, and the BJP, did form the government, but it lasted only 13 days in his first stint at governance. He never had the numbers and made his resignation announcement almost offhandedly after two days of divisive debate on a confidence motion. The motion was never put to vote as its result was foregone. Even the BJP’s opponents then paid tribute to the party for not attempting any horse-trading.

India celebrates
72nd Independence day
Defining moment for India Setting the stage for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vouches for taking the country to new heights IANS, NEW DELHI
S
etting the stage for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15 projected himself as an impatient agent of change, castigated the Congress-led UPA for its “governance failure” and promised housing, power, water, sanitation and healthcare for all in his mission to take the country to new heights. He also announced that the ambitious Prime Minister’s Jan Aarogya Abhiyan (PMJAA), dubbed “Modicare”, for health insurance coverage of Rs 5 lakh each to 10 crore families will be launched on September 25 on the 102nd birth anniversary of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJP’s predecessor. In a strong election pitch, Modi reached out to Dalits, youth, farmers, tribals, women, fishermen, security forces, middle class and upper middle class by referring to the work done by his government and his endeavour to improve their lives, especially the poor. In his last Independence Day speech at the Red Fort ahead of the next general elections, Modi said there was “senseless” criticism against him and asserted he was impatient and restless agent of change for eliminating poverty and

bringing all-round development. Five crore people, he said, have been brought out of poverty in the last two years. The 80-minute address, however, avoided any reference to foreign policy issues, including Pakistan, or the controversies surrounding the spate of recent incidents of lynching, the National Register of Citizens in Assam and the Rafale jet deal. Breaking his silence in the conext of rape and sexual exploitation in
welfare homes in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Modi said there was a need to attack such a mindset by putting the fear of the law that had been made stringent. He said law was supreme and no one could take it into their hands. Referring to Jammu and Kashmir, Modi repeated the lines from his last year’s August 15 speech that the Kashmir problem can be resolved only by embracing its people, not with bullets or abuses.
Reaffirming his mantra of “sabka saath, sabka vikas” (take everyone along, development for all), the Prime Minister said there would be no discrimination against any section and there would be no nepotism and favoritism. “I want to reiterate my pledges — housing for all, power for all, clean cooking (gas) for all, water for all, sanitation for all, skills for all, insurance for all, connectivity for all. We want to go ahead with these programs.
“People make senseless criticism against me. But whatever may be said, I want to publicly acknowledge that I am restless because several countries have marched ahead and I want to take the country ahead of them. I am impatient because children are still suffering from malnutrition. I am eager to provide quality of life and ease of living to country men. I am impatient to provide health cover to each of the poor so that they can fight against diseases. I am eager because we have to lead knowledge-based fourth industrial revolution,” he said. Answering critics who question his emphasis on cleanliness and the efficacy of the campaign, Modi cited a WHO report, which said that the Swachh Bharat Mission had saved the lives of three lakh poor children. Modi turned poetic before winding up his long speech, saying that the country’s fortunes were being transformed. “We have to make a new dawn and create a new India. We want to move ahead with the dream of reaching the crescendo of development.” He said the world had accepted that India was synonymous to “policy paralysis and delayed reform”. “But, now the world is saying that policy decisions are being taken as per the ‘reform, perform and transform’ norm.”
Don’t be distracted by contentious issues: President IANS, NEW DELHI
A
sserting that India was at the cusp of achieving many of its long-awaited goals, President Ram Nath Kovind said “contentious issues and extraneous debates” should not distract the people. In his address to the nation on the eve of 72nd Independence Day, he referred to various issues and said these may have held true 10 or 20 years ago or even earlier to some extent but “even so we are at a juncture in our history that is different from any period that we have so far experienced”. “We are at the cusp of achieving many of our long-awaited goals. Universal access to electricity, the elimination of open defecation, the

elimination of homelessness, the very elimination of extreme poverty is achievable and attainable. We are at a pivotal moment. Let con-
tentious issues and extraneous debates not distract us,” he said. Kovind said if freedom was defined in narrow political terms,
then August 15, 1947 marks a closure. “But freedom is a broader concept. It is not fixed and finite. Freedom is a constant and relentless endeavour. Even decades after 1947, each one of us can contribute in the manner of a freedom fighter. We can do so if we expand the frontiers of freedom and of opportunity for our fellow Indians and our beloved India.” Referring to the resolve of various sections in nation building, the President said that the reality was that every Indian who does his or her job with sincerity and commitment, who contributes to society by being true to a professional ethic, be it the doctor’s ethic, the nurse’s ethic, the teacher’s ethic, the public servant’s ethic, the factory worker’s ethic,
the business person’s ethic, the ethic of those who have to care for ageing parents - each of these and many others are in their own way upholding the values of freedom. “They are providing the fruits and goods and services of freedom to fellow citizens. Every citizen of India who does his or her duty sincerely, fulfils a personal and professional obligation and keeps to a given word is, at a fundamental level, upholding the principles of our freedom struggle,” he said. “I would argue that every Indian who does not jump the queue and respects the civic space and rights of those ahead in the line also lives up to the principles of our freedom struggle. It’s a very small gesture. Let us try and abide by it.”

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief, who recently dropped hints of elections being advanced, said the blessings of the people were a source of strength for him. In his speech at the main official function to mark India’s 72nd Independence, he recalled the struggle for Telangana state under his leadership and said the people did not rest till achieving the goal which was considered impossible by many. He claimed that the government not only put to rest all doubts about the viability of Telangana as a state, but made it a model for the entire country. Indian American Convicted of Attempted intentional Case
Alpeshkumar Prajapati
BY A STAFF WRITER ACON, GA - A convenience store worker was confronted by two gunmen while heading into work on Tuesday morning. The Gulf Food Mart clerk Alpeshkumar Prajapati, known as A.P. to customers and coworkers, was led by gunpoint into the building where he was fatally shot, according to video footage from the store at the corner of Bartlett Street in the 2800 block of Napier. It was not immediately clear if anything was taken. A Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release said investigators are still trying to sort out what happened inside the store. When deputies arrived, 36-year-old Alpeshkumar Prajapati was found lying on the floor in a puddle of blood just inside the front door. Investigators are piecing together video surveillance images taken from a recently enhanced camera system at the store. One video from Tuesday morning shows a hooded gunman leading Prajapati into the store. The masked man had his left hand on Prajapati’s shoulder and his right hand holding a gun to the worker’s back. The actual shooting is not shown in that piece of footage. They left the store in an unknown direction. Prajapati was still alive but gravely wounded when he was rushed to Medical Center, Navicent Health, where he died at the Trauma Center at 9 a.m., deputy coroner Lonnie Miley said.

DJ Sukhjinder is also all heart. Born in Bholath, a town in Kapurthala district in the state of Punjab, India, DJ Sukhjinder went to the U.S. in 2000 For years, DJ Sukhjinder tirelessly worked multiple jobs, Then in 2012, DJ Sukhjinder opened his very own CD/DVD store in South Richmond Hill, NY. New Science of Spirituality Meditation Center Inaugurated BY A STAFF WRITER ISLE ,IL - Thousands of people from over thirty different countries gathered in Lisle, Illinois on July 28th for the inauguration of the new National Headquarters for the Science of Spirituality. Over the course of three decades, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj has been devoted to spreading the message of personal transformation through meditation on the inner Light and Sound. His teachings have impacted the lives of millions. Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj was accompanied by delegates from the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The organizations new headquarters embodies love, grace, and universality. Combining design elements from the East and the West, the spiritual master’s goal is to bring together people from all walks of life. The ribbon-cutting took place in front of the reflecting pool and a three-ton sculpture named “The Meditator,” which embodies the Science of Spirituality logo. The architect, Gensler, is a world renowned collaborative architectural design firm, while the general contractor, Skender, has been the builder of choice for many of the world’s leading brands. The Science of Spirituality Meditation Center, built in compliance with green standards, is one of Gensler’s and Skender’s most recent and successful projects. A panel of honored guests spoke during the inauguration program, which took place in the main hall following the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The first speaker, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, expressed his gratitude to the guests and talked about the four main purposes of the Meditation Center. Indian American Research Team Use Power of Tumeric to Fight Cancer
Dipanjan Pan
BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL- A team of Indian American researchers at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City has developed a process to enable curcumin to help kill cancer cells. Curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric, a medicinal herb with powerful antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties Curcumin is also known to exhibit anticancer properties, but its poor solubility in water had impeded curcumin’s clinical application in cancer. A drug needs to be soluble in water in order to flow through the bloodstream. Despite decades of research, the development
C
of effectively delivering water-insoluble curcumin to cancer cells had remained a challenge. A team lead by Dipanjan Pan, associate professor of bioengineering at UIUC, has now found a way out. Pan’s laboratory collaborated with Peter Stang at the University of Utah to come up with a solution to render curcumin soluble, and deliver it to infected tumors to kill the cancer cells. The team has reported its work in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.” Pan’s team included post-doctoral researcher Santosh Misra at UIUC; and Sougata Datta, Manik Lal Saha, Nabajit Lahiri, Janis Louie, and Peter J. Stang from the University of Utah.
Senior Citizen Parivar of Elgin organized its annual picnic at Wayne Forest Preserve last week. The weatherman had forecast heavy rains but some 200 seniors actively participated in the full-day fun-filled activity. Traditional dishes were cooked at the scenic spot. In order to make the day more interesting, Parivar arranged different games for elderly members, and winners were awarded with gift cards as prizes. Dhiraj Suvagia (chairman), Bharat Thakkar (president), Jay Desai (secretary) and all members of committee worked with sincerity to make the event successful.
