US to Pak: Fight terrorists of all hues Citizens in Pakistan and the Pakistani government has their own vested interest in trying to deal with terrorist organizations attempting to operate inside their country ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

W

hile it believes warmer relations between India and Pakistan would be in the interest of both countries, the US says it was for them to resolve issues bilaterally after the terrorist attack on an Indian Air Force base. Washington has also “made clear with the highest levels of the government of Pakistan that it must continue to target all militant groups” — including those targeting India — without discrimination. “Obviously the leaders of both countries are going to have to decide for themselves what they believe is in the interests of their citizens,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters on January 4 when asked if India should continue the peace initiative. “The United States certainly believes that

Security forces personnel during their operation against the militants who attacked the Indian Air Force base

warmer relations and more cooperation between the government of India and the government of Pakistan would in the interests of both countries,” he said. “But ultimately the leaders of

those countries will have to decide for themselves.” Asked if the US sees Pakistan taking action against terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taeba as promised in a US-Pakistan joint

statement, Earnest suggested Islamabad has its own interest in fighting against terrorist groups operating inside their own country. The US has offered its support to the Pakistani government, he said,

“particularly in light of that terrible terrorist incident where we saw an extremist organization carry out an attack against an elementary school inside of Pakistan” a little over a year ago. That was a rather “vivid illustration” for people “that citizens in Pakistan and the Pakistani government has their own vested interest in trying to deal with terrorist organizations that are attempting to operate inside their country.” At the State Department, again strongly condemning the terrorist attack on an IAF base airbase, spokesperson John Kirby said the US remained “committed to a strong partnership with the Indian Government to combat terrorism.” Noting that Pakistan “also publicly and privately condemned this recent attack on the Indian airbase, he said, “we’ve been clear with the highest levels of the Government of Pakistan that it must continue to target all militant groups.”

When Seinfeld took Obama to soon announce Obama on a car ride gun-control measures IANS, WASHINGTON

U WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama was seen taking a car ride with comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Seinfeld kicked off the seventh season of his web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” with an interview with Obama, reports aceshowbiz.com. The show was filmed on the White House grounds because Obama wasn’t allowed to slip past security. Seinfeld picked up the US President at his Oval Office in a classic 1963 Corvette Stingray split window coupe. During the interview, Obama discussed about losing his anonymity. “I would love to just be taking a walk and then I run into you. You’re sitting on a bench. And suddenly I say, ‘Hey Jerry, how ya doing?’,” Obama shared. “That moment when you lost your

anonymity... And anonymity is not something you think about as being valuable,” he added. Obama also revealed the scariest part of living at the White House, admitting to Seinfeld that it was a bit like “Night at the Museum”. “So you’re looking around and thinking, what the hell is this,” he quipped. When asked who would be the leader he would love to hang out with most, Obama mentioned Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, who was the 26th President of US from 1901-09. He revealed to Seinfeld that all of his underwear was one brand and one color and he has a closet like normal people. Obama later got in the driver’s seat to take Seinfeld for a spin in the driveway of the White House.

S President Barack Obama on January 4 said that he will soon roll out gun-control initiatives, stressing that the measures will be “entirely consistent” with the constitutional right to bear arms. Obama made the remarks at the White House with Attorney General Loretta Lynch and FBI Director James Comey. He asked his team to look for executive actions he can take to curb gun violence in the country, reports Xinhua.

Obama said although the steps will not solve every violent crime or prevent every mass shooting, it will potentially save lives and spare families the pain and extraordinary loss as a consequence of a firearm being in the hands of the wrong people. “I’m also confident that the recommendations that are being made by my team here are ones that are entirely consistent with the Second Amendment and people’s lawful right to bear arms,” he said. In his weekly radio address on Friday, Obama blasted Congress

for failing to act on curbing gun violence. “We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one? What if Congress did something -- anything -- to protect our kids from gun violence?” he said.

US honors Pluto’s historic flyby with stamps IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he US Postal Service has released a preview of its new 2016 stamps highlighting NASA’s planetary science programme, including the New Horizons’ historic 2015 flyby. The 2016 stamp series also has eight new colorful Forever stamps of NASA images of solar system planets, a “Global Forever” stamp dedicated to the Earth’s moon as well as another postal treat for space fans - a tribute to 50 years of “Star Trek”. “It is exciting to see that planetary science and space exploration are being celebrated in

these new 2016 stamps,” said John Grunsfeld, NASA’s associate administrator for science in Washington, DC, in a statement.

“We are honored that the US Postal Service has chosen to highlight NASA’s New Horizons and 50 years of planetary exploration with these iconic images,” he added. The Pluto stamps are of special significance to NASA and the New Horizons team which placed a 29-cent 1991 “Pluto: Not Yet Explored” stamp on board the spacecraft. On July 14, the New Horizons carried the tiny postage stamp on its history-making journey to Pluto and beyond, as members of the mission team celebrated with a large print, striking the words “not yet”.

Pathankot attack: Sharif assures action

Seven security personnel were killed in the pre-dawn attack by terrorists on the air base in Pathankot. Six suspected Pakistani terrorists were killed in the three-day long operation JAIDEEP SARIN, PATHANKOT

F

ive days after suspected Pakistani terrorists raided the IAF base in Pathankot, Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar has admitted to “security lapses” that led to the terror attack that left seven security personnel and all six terrorists dead. Parrikar said the battle against the terrorists who sneaked into the sprawling base before dawn on Saturday effectively ended after around 36 hours (at 7.30 p.m. on Sunday) and that combing operations going on since then were “for safety purposes”. “It started at 3.30 a.m. when (IAF) Garud force engaged the terrorists... At 7.30 p.m. (on Sunday), they (terrorists) were finished. So it is about 36 hours,” Parrikar said when asked how effective the counter offensive of the security forces was. Parrikar told the media after visiting the base that combing operations were still going on but “this is only for safety purposes” and that no more terrorists were believed hidden in the Indian Air Force complex. Some gaps led to security lapses, the minister said. He did not elaborate. “What is worrying is how they (terrorists) entered the base.” “The things that we have found

Why Punjab SP’s version is being suspected? PATHANKOT: Is senior Punjab Police officer Salwinder Singh a suspect or a victim in the terrorist attack on the Pathankot air base? The inconsistencies in the statements of Superintendent of Police Salwinder Singh, his cook Madan Gopal and his jeweller-friend Rajesh Verma, regarding the same incident have made investigators curious. This has led to the SP being put under the scanner. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been questioning all three since Tuesday evening. One of the discrepancies in their statements is regarding the number of terrorists. While Verma, who travelled the most distance with the terrorists, said there were four terrorists, the police officer and his cook said they were 4-5 terrorists. Another inconsistency was about the terrorists hitting them with rifle butts. While Verma and the cook had bodily injuries, the SP had none. Also,

so far, there are some indications some of the material is made in Pakistan. “Let the NIA (National Investigation Agency) investigate it, everything about whom they were linked

the SP claimed that he could not hear much of what the terrorists were talking among themselves. Verma said they talked to their “commander” and addressed each other as “alpha” and “major”. Investigators are baffled by the fact that the terrorists killed the Innova taxi driver, Ikagar Singh, by slitting his throat and stabbing him and also attempted to slit the throat of the SP’s friend Verma, leaving him with injuries. Why did they spare the SP, who had not a scratch? The police officer, Salwinder Singh,

to and who sent them will emerge,” he said of the suspected links of the terrorists to Pakistan. The NIA, he said, had “initial leads, where they (terrorists) have come from, how they have come”.

is claiming that he and two others were stopped in his Mahindra XUV and abducted by 4-5 heavily armed terrorists near Kolian village on Dec 31 night around 11.30. He claimed that he and the cook were dumped in a drain in a forest area by the terrorists after some distance, unharmed, but with their hands, legs and mouths tied. He said that both his mobile phones were taken away by the terrorists. The cook, Gopal, however, said that the police officer still had one phone with him with which he contacted his senior. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Suresh Arora said that there was no delay on the part of the state police in acting on the SP’s claims. “It was for the first time that the NSG (National Security Guards) were deployed much before the attack. The alert was shared and arrangements were made,” Arora claimed.

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has promised his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi that Islamabad will take “prompt and decisive action” against the terrorists linked to the attack.

People pay homage to Lieutenant Colonel Niranjan Kumar who was killed while defusing a bomb during combing operations at Pathankot IAF base. (Photo: IANS)

Sharif, who telephoned Modi from Sri Lanka, gave the assurance after New Delhi provided “specific and actionable information” to Islamabad regarding the terrorists. Modi underlined the need for Pakistan to take “firm and immediate action” against organizations and individuals responsible for the audacious attack. The Sharif-Modi conversation followed the killing of all six terrorists in Pathankot, which is home to one of the biggest IAF bases. The Pathankot Air Force Station, where a MIG-21 Bison squadron and MI-35 attack helicopters are based, is spread over 1,900 acres. Over 1,500 families live inside the campus which also has a school, a hospital and a market. The Pathankot attack came after Modi and Sharif met on Christmas Day in Lahore when the Indian leader, while flying home from Kabul, dramatically made a twohour halt. In Kerala, NSG commando Lt. Col. E.K. Niranjan, killed during mopping up operations at the air base, was cremated in Elumbulsherry village in Palakkad district.

Those killed included four women, Manipur’s Inspector General of Police Clay Khongsai told IANS. “The toll has risen to seven and 69 people have been injured,” principal secretary in-charge of home Suresh Babu told IANS in Imphal. “There has been a lot of damage in Imphal. It is difficult for us to assess the total damage at the moment but the district administrations are on the job,” he said. The quake, with epicenter in

Manipur’s Tamenglong district, took place at 4.35 a.m. It was also felt in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura besides Myanmar and Bhutan. In New Delhi, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) coordinated with northeastern states and the ministries of home affairs and defence and other agencies, a home ministry statement said. India’s northeast is considered the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. In September 2011, Sikkim suffered heavy damage as a quake hit the state.

Narrative of traditional storytellers dying unsung in Kashmir SHEIKH QAYOOM, SRINAGAR

W

inter in Kashmir has not always been a period of bone-chilling cold and misery. It has also been the magical backdrop to the unending narrative of traditional storytellers in the past that would transport the young and the old to fairylands of princes, princesses, demons, djinns, mythical birds and wooden horses that could fly. Both in Srinagar city and the countryside, long and dull winter nights were brought alive by storytellers who had mastered the art in such a manner that they would specially be invited for night-long sessions. “As radio, cinema and television came to Kashmir, the demand for the storytellers died down gradually till the present times when the younger generation of Kashmiris

don’t even know anything about this tradition”, said Noor-ud-Din, an octogenarian who lives in Ganderbal district. The storyteller would come to the village with regular periodicity during the winter months in the past and the event was no less than

a small village celebration. “Children and elders would all gather around the storyteller whose session would begin after dinner. He would sit in the centre of a large room surrounded by his audience. The room would be lit in village homes by an oil-lamp and in well-

to-do urban homes by a kerosene lantern since electricity was not even heard of in our childhood,” said Habibullah Dar, another resident of the same district. Dar’s uncle called ‘Wali Maam’ was a master storyteller. He belonged to Anantnag district. He would come to our village for a few weeks during the ‘Chillai Kalan’ (40-day long period of intense cold beginning December 21). “The entire village would wait eagerly for his visit. After dinner, he would begin his stories that often revolved around fairylands, lovesmitten princes, demons, the mythical birds called the ‘Rooks’ which would lift a person and take him to the ‘Koh-e-Kaff’ (A far off mountain). It was an endless narrative that would be interrupted in the morning only to be resumed the next evening, Dar recalled.

“It was so participative that in between his narrative, the storyteller would ask someone in the audience to repeat the last line of the tale. “This is perhaps what you people in today’s world call interactive audience,” Dar said as he laughed. However long the winter night and the narrative of the storyteller, the conclusion was inescapable the triumph of good over evil. “Storytelling in the past was not just an art to keep you amused during the dull and dark winter nights. It was a lesson in morality in which the mighty demons and power villains would always lose to the hero who embodied love, sincerity and compassion”, Noor-ud-Din said. While folk theater and Sufiyana music are being revived in Kashmir, it is time the art of storytelling is also preserved as the grand heritage of this land.

Middle East tense over Saudi execution of Shia cleric The simultaneous execution of 47 people was the biggest such event in Saudi Arabia since the 1980 killing of 63 jihadi rebels who seized Mecca’s Grand Mosque in 1979

Britain voices ‘disappointment’

De-escalate tension, urges White House WASHINGTON: The US is concerned over the need for Saudi Arabia and Iran to de-escalate the situation in the Middle East following diplomatic tensions between the two countries, the White House said. “We are urging all sides to show restraint and to not further inflame tensions that are on quite vivid display in the region,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on January 4. He added that US Secretary of State John Kerry had been in touch with his Iranian counterpart. He will also talk with his Saudi counterpart soon. “We have seen a lot of volatility, and instability in the Middle East has a tendency to break down along sectarian lines,” Earnest said. On January 4, three Sunni-led countries -- Bahrain, Sudan and the United Arab Emirates -- joined Saudi Arabia in severing or downgrading diplomatic ties with Iran, adding to the fraught atmosphere in the region. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir announced that his country will cut air traffic with Iran and ban citizens from travelling there.

T

he execution by Saudi Arabia of a prominent Shia cleric along with 46 others earlier this month has resulted in a serious escalation of religious and diplomatic tensions in the Middle East. The Iranian government and religious leaders across the region condemned the execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr along with 46 others and warned of repercussions that could bring down the country’s royal family, the media reported. Councils and clerics in Iran, Yemen and Lebanon said the

sein Jaber Ansari said. Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a leading Iranian cleric, said repercussions would bring down the Saudi ruling family. In Bahrain, demonstrators carrying pictures of Nimr faced security forces in a standoff in Abu-Saiba, a Shia village west of Manama. The simultaneous execution of 47 people on security grounds was the biggest such event in Saudi Arabia since the 1980 killing of 63 jihadi rebels who seized Mecca’s Grand Mosque in 1979. At least 157 people were put to death last year, a significant increase on the 90 people killed in 2014.

expressed our disappointment at the mass executions,” he noted. “We have discussed with the authorities in Riyadh, and expect that Ali Al-Nimr and others who were convicted as juveniles will not be executed. The UK will continue to raise these cases with the Saudi authorities,” the minister added. Ellwood also expressed concern over the attack on the Saudi Embassy in Iran. He urged that diplomatic missions should be properly protected and respected.

Following the execution, angry Iranian protesters set parts of Saudi consulate on fire in Iran’s northeastern religious city of Mashhad on January 2, Tabnak news website reported. Following another attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran, police arrested 40 protesters who raided and torched the embassy complex. Reacting sharply, Saudi Arabia announced to cut diplomatic ties with Iran and asked all Iranian diplomats to leave within 48 hours. Earlier, Iran’s foreign ministry summoned Saudi Arabian charge d’affaires to Tehran and strongly condemned the execution of Nimr al-Nimr.

N Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on December 30 congratulated Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on re-taking most of the Ramadi city from the Islamic State terror group, according to a statement issued by the UN office. In a call with the Iraqi prime minister, Ban noted that the liberation of Ramadi was an important victory and stressed the need for measures to be taken to restore the rule of law as well as basic services in Ramadi as to allow for the return of internally displaced persons as soon as possible, said the office. Expressing his concern over the recent abduction of a group of Qatari citizens in Iraq, including children, Ban urged al-Abadi to do everything possible to ensure their

killing of Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr would prompt widespread anger, the Guardian reported. Nimr was one of 47 people Saudi Arabian executed for terrorism on January 1. The Saudi grand mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh, appeared on television soon after to describe the executions as just. “The Saudi government supports terrorists and takfiri (radical Sunni) extremists, while executing and suppressing critics inside the country,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hos-

LONDON: British Minister for the Middle East Tobias Ellwood on January 3 expressed “disappointment” at the mass executions in Saudi Arabia, saying Britain will continue to raise these cases with the Saudi authorities. “I am deeply disturbed by the escalation in tensions in the last 24 hours in the Middle East,” Ellwood said in a statement. “The UK is firmly opposed to the death penalty. We have stressed this to the Saudi authorities and also

prompt and safe release. After re-taking most of the key city of Ramadi from IS militants, al-Abadi flew to the western city of Ramadi on January 5 to celebrate its liberation. The IS militants are no longer in a position of fighting back, as many of them either withdrew to rural areas outside Ramadi or redeployed in the eastern part of the city after the main battle last week.

orth Korea on January 6 announced that it has successfully conducted a hydrogen bomb test, hours after what seems to be an artificial earthquake was detected close to the nuclear test site. In a "special" announcement, North Korea said it conducted an H-bomb test, Yonhap reported. The test means a higher stage of North Korea's development of nuclear force, Pyongyang said. By succeeding in the H-bomb test, North Korea "joined the advanced ranks of nuclear weapons states possessed of even H-bomb", it said. South Korean denounced Pyongyang's hydrogen bomb test as a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions. Seoul vowed to forge a united stance with the international com-

munity to punish Pyongyang for going ahead with a fourth nuclear test. Seoul will ensure that North Korea will pay the price for testing a hydrogen bomb, calling it a grave provocation and challenge to international peace and stability, President Park Geun-hye said. "Now, the government should

closely cooperate with the international community to make sure that North Korea pays the corresponding price for the nuclear test," Park said in a National Security Council meeting. Park said it was important to induce the international community to impose strong sanctions on North Korea.

In the latest of a string of incidents targeting US Sikhs, Amrik Singh Bal, a 68-year-old Sikh resident in the Fresno area of California, was attacked by two white males in their 20s before dawn on Saturday morning while he was waiting for a ride to work. The Sikhs are frequently conflated with Muslims and often wind up absorbing the backlash against Islamist extremists, the Washington Post reported. But there’s nothing new about Sikhs being the targets of violence and intimidation in the

Indian-origin man starts own party in Britain LONDON: An Indian-origin corporate banking worker has set up his own political party and called for Britain to throw open its borders. Harjinder Singh, a former UK Independence Party candidate for Birmingham’s Perry Barr constituency, has set up the Open Borders Party as he disagrees vehemently with his former Euroskeptic party’s immigration policy. “I wanted to leave the EU, but I’m a libertarian and I believe in independence and freedom,” Singh said. He added that he wants an open border, as long as new arrivals do not have a criminal record.

The backlash against people who are perceived as being non-American has been exacerbated by anti-Islamic statements made by politicians.

phobic intolerance since they began arriving in the Pacific northwest to fill logging jobs in the early 20th century, Singh said. “Pretty immediately after our

arrival in this country, we became targets of xenophobia.” “Hate violence has ebbed and flowed throughout our history in America, but being targets of racism is nothing new. It’s part of our history here.” Intimidation against Sikhs intensified in the months after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, “when a wave of anti-Islamic sentiment washed over the country, leading some to confuse the long beards and turbans worn by many Sikh men as a representation of Islam,” the Post said. According to the Sikh Coalition, there were more than 300 cases of violence and discrimination against US Sikhs in the first month after the 2001 attacks. With the US again grappling with fears of terrorism after recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Sikhs say their community is again bear-

he Uttar Pradesh government rolled out a red carpet welcome to some 250-odd members of the Indian diaspora on January 4 at Agra as the maiden ‘UP Pravasi Diwas’ took off to an impressive start. Dr. Dinesh Vyas, a Rajasthan born Indian-American surgeon at a training session for trauma first responders at Rajasthan Police Academy, Jaipur.

He said that the whole idea behind the UP Pravasi Diwas was to reconnect the diaspora with their roots in the state and work on a common and meaningful dialogue of development of the state. “I am overjoyed to see such large number of NRIs here and must admit that the gathering has exceeded my expectation,” he added. It’s beyond that.” The Coalition believes 500,000 to 750,000 Sikhs live in the US, with about half of that population residing in California. The Sikh Coalition’s Harsimran Kaur said the backlash against people who are perceived as being non-American has been exacerbated by anti-Islamic statements made by Republican presidential candidates such as Ben Carson and Donald Trump.

India beat Afghanistan 2-1 to win SAFF title The Indians avenged their 2-0 loss to the defending champions in the final of the last edition in 2013 IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

S

kipper Sunil Chhetri struck in extra time as India staged a superb comeback to claim their seventh SAFF Championship title by defeating a spirited Afghanistan 2-1 in a hardfought final at the Trivandrum International Stadium here on January 3. Chhetri (101st minute) scored the decisive goal for India when he capitalized on a defensive lapse by the visitors in the first half of extra time. Earlier, the two teams were locked 1-1 after the regulation 90 minutes in a match which saw fast, end to end action with plenty of chances at both ends. Zubayr Amiri (70th) put Afghanistan in front before Jeje Lalpekhlua (72nd) put India back in the game, and then Chhetri finally sealed the matter. The Indians thus avenged their 2-0 loss to the defending champions in the final of the last edition in Katmandu in 2013. The best chance of the first half fell to Jeje in the 14th minute. He

Mumbai school cricketer scores a record 1,009 MUMBAI: Mumbai school cricketer Pranav Dhanawade became the first batsman to score 1,000-plus runs in an innings in when he reached 1,009 not out in an H.T. Bhandari Cup Under-16 inter-school cricket tournament here on January 5. The 15-year-old student of K.C. Gandhi High School, Kalyan, was batting against Arya Gurukul School. The tournament is organized by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for the benefit of suburban schools. Pranav’s epic 323-ball knock consisted of a staggering 59 sixes and 129 fours. His team declared the innings at 1,465 for six with Pranav remaining unbeaten at 1,009. He batted for 395 minutes and had a strike rate of 312.38. The student broke a 116-yearold cricketing record after surpassing 652, thus taking over the reins of the “highest individual score” from A.E.J Collins. Collins held the record since 1899 when he struck an unbeaten 628 for Clark House against North Town House in Britain.

The Afghanistan strike force comprising captain Faysal Shayesteh, left winger Noraollah Amiri and right winger Mustafa Zazai caused the hosts plenty of problems throughout the match. The Indian defenders did themselves no favors by some shoddy defending on several occasions. Chhetri finally clinched the winner for India when the hosts goalie Sayed Hashemi fluffed his attempt to clear a free kick from the midfield.

NEW DELHI: The Justice R.M. Lodha Committee appointed by the Supreme Court on January 4 made a host of far-reaching recommendations to improve cricket administration in the country, including for restructuring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and legalizing betting. The 159-page report by the threemember committee comprising former Chief Justice Lodha, Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R.V. Raveendran — former judges of the Supreme court — also proposed that the 14-member BCCI working committee should be replaced by an apex council. court here on January 4 took cognizance of a defamation complaint against suspended BJP leader Kirti Azad for his alleged “defamatory” and “false” remarks against Delhibased cricketer Himmat Singh and his father Tejbir Singh. Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain agreed to hear the criminal defamation complaint against Azad and posted the matter for hearing on February 22. The court will record the statement of complainant witnesses on the next date of hearing. The complaint was filed by Himmat Singh’s father Tejbir Singh last month against Azad and three other former cricketers including Bishan Singh Bedi, claiming that the four made baseless allegations against his son Himmat Singh, saying he was selected in a cricket tournament after giving a bribe of Rs.25 lakh. Monday, the complaint’s counsel advocate Gajender Singh told court that in a recently hold press conference by Azad, former cricketers Bedi and Surender Khanna, and Sameer Bahadur, who is associated with cricket, they defamed the name of his client. Advocate Kumar said the allegation levelled against young cricketer has disreputed his name.

Citing the record of young cricketer, he stated that Himmat Singh was selected on the squad of under-19 Delhi cricket team due to his merit in performance. He further said whatever may be the motive of the accused in making the statement, whether due to politics or to highlight corruption, the young cricketer’s name has been allegedly defamed.

Ministers and government officials should be barred from holding positions in the BCCI, the report added. The panel proposed that the BCCI should be brought under the purview of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The BCCI has opposed the move in the past, citing its autonomy. The various proposals in the report to the apex court include separate governing bodies for the BCCI and the Indian Premier League so as to partially segregate their functioning.

Ashwin tops 2015 as No.1 Test bowler DUBAI: Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin December 31 became only the second Indian, after the legendary Bishan Singh R. Ashwin Bedi, to be ranked as the No.1 bowler in Tests in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings. Ashwin achieved the top spot for the first time in his career after injury prevented South African Dale Steyn from bowling more than 3.5 overs in England’s second innings in the Durban Test. Even though the fast bowler bagged four wickets in the first innings, it wasn’t enough for him to end the year as the No.1 bowler for the sixth time since 2009, and the position went to the Chennai man. Steyn had started the Durban Test leading Ashwin by four points and now trails the Indian tweaker by the same margin. Ashwin finished 2015 as the most successful bowler with 62 wickets in nine Tests, seven five-wicket hauls and best figures of 7/66.

TRS sustains Telangana sentiment, launches many initiatives

The party overcame electricity shortages, launched major irrigation projects and implemented welfare schemes MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

T

he first full calendar year for the newly-created state of Telangana was an eventful one as, despite teething problems, the TRS government launched many initiatives and sustained the Telangana sentiment. Notwithstanding a severe drought and a spate of farmers’ suicides, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government’s performance was creditable as it overcame electricity shortages,

launched major irrigation projects and implemented welfare schemes. The political stability helped Hyderabad bounce back as an investment destination, indicated by the major plans unveiled by global IT giants and its emergence as an aviation and defense hub. The government started work on its flagship projects like Mission Kakatiya aimed at restoring 46,000 irrigation tanks, Water Grid to ensure drinking water supply and two bedroom houses for poor. However, severe drought hit agriculture production and the falling

water levels in dams and the ground water table had impact on irrigation schemes. The much-publicized Harithaharam or green Telangana programme could not take off. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao laid the foundation stone for major irrigation projects, including Rs.35,000 crore (over $5 billion) Palamuru lift irrigation project. KCR, as Rao is popularly known, claimed that with an annual allocation of Rs.28,000 for various welfare schemes like social security pension, Telangana is the No.1 state in the country in welfare. Music museum soon in Kerala THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If all goes well, a music museum will be set up in Kerala with a collection of songs, long-playing records and song books of singers. Cultural organization Swaralaya will set up the museum, former state minister and senior CPI-M leader M.A. Baby told reporters here on January 3. He said the documentation process, which is the first step to setting up the museum, has begun. “We generally don’t document things and musicians are not too far behind. Singer Yesudas still does not know how many songs he has sang. We have initiated the process to set up a museum,” he said.

TRS government managed to tide over the electricity shortage. Unlike last year, the state witnessed no power cuts this year. The government also embarked on a massive programme to add 25,000 MW of power with an investment of

Rs.90,000 crore in four years. Barring one incident in which five Muslim undertrial prisoners were gunned down by the police in April, there were no law and order problems. Police also countered the attempts of Maoist resurgence.

ndia’s maiden spacecraft to Mars is still groping around the red planet to locate methane gas in its atmosphere, a senior space scientist said on January 4. “The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is yet to detect methane gas or find the exact source of it. I don’t have an update on how much of science we have been able to find out,” Indian space agency’s former director S.K. Shivakumar told IANS at the 103rd Indian Science Congress here. Though India was the first country to succeed in entering the Martian orbit in its maiden attempt on September 24, 2014, barring stun-

ning pictures of the red planet, its 475kg orbiter with five scientific instruments on board is yet to relay substantial data or information on Mars’ origin and evolution in the solar system.”

Being a technology person, I don’t know what is its current status,” he said on the sidelines of a plenary session on ‘Space Science, Technology and Applications’, on second day of the five-day annual

event at Manasagangotri campus of University of Mysore. The Rs.450-crore mission was launched on November 5, 2013 from space port Sriharikota, about 80km northeast of Chennai, and reached the Martian orbit after a 10month voyage through the interplanetary space.” As of Sunday evening and Monday morning, the orbiter is doing well, going around Mars, taking different set of pictures and whatever is required with its other payloads,” Shivakumar said. The orbiter’s scientific instruments were built to study the red planet’s surface, its mineral composition and scan its atmosphere for methane gas.

She calls him an actor’s director. “Given Ajay sir’s years of experience, he exactly knows what he wants from his actors. He has a knack for extracting the best out of his actors and that’s what makes him an actor’s director. He’s a very talented director,” Sayyeshaa told IANS. While it’s not easy to act as well

as direct, it’s a cakewalk for Devgn, according to Sayyeshaa. “A lot of people find it difficult to act and direct at the same time.

It must be very challenging. Ajay sir is comfortable switching hats; he makes everything look so easy. The minute we shoot a scene, he’d

run and sit behind the monitor screen to check it,” she said. The young actress is in awe of the “multi-tasking skills” of Devgn, whom she finds mostly “calm” and “patient” on the sets. She also finds Devgn to be an “organized” director. “There’s absolutely no room for confusion on the sets. Ajay sir is a very organized person and it reflects in his work. Everything is planned well in advance,” she revealed. “I’ve always been fond of Ajay sir. It feels so surreal to be part of his dream project and to be playing his heroine. SRK interested in ‘mature love story’ with Kajol

A

fter Dilwale, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said he’d love to be cast with Kajol again if an interesting and mature love story comes their way. “If there’s a nice film, if it’s interesting and different... maybe a mature love story, that would be nice. We don’t make too many of those,” Shah Rukh told IANS. “Perhaps Kajol and I... well, I could be totally presumptous about it, but we would be perhaps a good pair as we have done films together for the last 22 years. It will be interesting to be cast in a mature love story, not a yeppy or happy-go-lucky ones we’ve done before. In our stage, age and life, of whatever that we’ve seen, maybe we will be able to essay a different kind of emotion as actors,” he added. From Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Duplicate and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in the 1990s to entertainers like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, My Name Is Khan and Diwale — Kajol and SRK have turned out to be one of Bollywood’s most beloved onscreen couples. While explaining the magic that they recreate onscreen each time, Shah Rukh said: “When we have done films together, people have really liked them even if they are of different genres. You can’t ignore that.”

Wish I could work with today’s actresses: Big B

S

uperstar Amitabh Bachchan regretted not getting to work with today’s actresses when he was young. Bachchan had played a romantic role opposite late Jiah Khan in Ram Gopal Verma’s Nishabd. Asked if he wished to act opposite current actresses, he replied: “We tried it once in Nishabd’ and it was a failure because they didn’t accept the fact that a 60-year-old gets involved with an 18-year old.” “I’m not going to get a leading lady from the younger generation to play my love interest, that period is over. I regret it because I wish that I had these lovely ladies when I was playing the leading man. But it won’t happen now. So there’ll be more character roles and more

character oriented roles and which is what I’m doing.” Bachchan worked in another love story opposite a relatively younger Tabu in R. Balki’s Cheeni Kum. His teacher-student relationship with Rani Mukerji in Black also had romantic moments where they had shared a kiss.

BY A STAFF WRITER ASADENA, CA-- As the Sikh float in the 127th Tournament of Roses Parade glided down the avenues of Pasadena, Calif., January 1, Sikh Americans hoped that this platform would provide an opportunity to introduce the Sikh culture and fight stereotypes attached to Sikhs all across the United States. “In order to do that, we need to be part of the community, and the Rose Parade is a perfect opportunity for us to celebrate with fellow Americans,” said Bhajneet Singh, a spokesman and member of United Sikh Mission, in Fontana. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be part of the legacy of the Rose Parade, which is as American as it gets.” The float represented the community’s rich heritage for a second year and showcased the harvest festival celebrated in Punjab called Vaisakhi. It was conceived to fit into this year’s Rose Parade theme of “Find Your Adventure.” It featured a Sikh man with full beard and a majestic turban riding on a horse to participate in competitive sports and festivities. The center of the float showed

cultural games, an ethnic bazaar, beautiful embroideries, rich foods, and the state bird, the peacock. The back of the float displayed a map of Punjab, India. Several Sikh American families rode on the float. The float was sponsored by the Sikh advocacy group, United Sikh Mission, in collaboration with Khalsa Care Foundation and SikhLens. “There have been a lot of hate crimes, not only against Sikhs, but also against Muslims. This particular step is not just about creating an awareness about the Sikh religion and telling our history, but also educating people that just because we look different, doesn’t mean we are dangerous,” said a San Diego-based Sikh float volunteer Harbani Kaur. “It’s basically accepting people with different identities, different backgrounds, and different cultures as one. At the end of the day, we’re all human. We all belong to the same human race. Basically we’re all equal.” Sikhism is the world’s fifth-largest religion and there are about 700,000 Sikhs in the US, according to the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund.

BY A STAFF WRITER OCHESTER. NY -- Federal authorities say a New York man has been arrested on charges he was planning a New Year’s Eve attack at a bar to prove to the Islamic State he was worthy to join it in Syria. Prosecutors announced last week that 25-year-old Emanuel Lutchman, of Rochester, had been charged with attempting to provide material support to terrorists. He was snared in an FBI sting. A federal complaint says Lutchman is a self-professed convert to Islam who claimed to receive direction from an overseas Islamic State member and planned to carry out an attack at a bar in the Rochester area on December 31. The FBI says Lutchman had an accomplice who was actually working for the agency. The duo bought knives and a machete for the attack.

Indian billionaire offers to trade Martins beach BY A STAFF WRITER ILICON VALLEY, CA -Indian American entrepreneur Vinod Khosla, co-founder of Sun Microsystems and founder of Khosla Ventures in Silicon Valley, Vinod Khosla who has been embroiled in a four-year legal battle over Martins Beach in Half Moon Bay, Calif., has offered to trade the property to the State Lands Commission for a similar beach with private access. Khosla bought Martins Beach in 2008 and cut off access to the popular site two years later by gating off the only road down to the beach. The previous owners, the Deeney family, had allowed public access to the beach, which is popular with surfers, fishermen and picnicking families. In California, all beaches are open to the public up to the mean tide line, the highest point at which waves crash into the shore. The California Coastal Commission has fined Khosla $11,250 per day since 2008 for disallowing access to the beach. Two lawsuits against Khosla have resulted in differing outcomes. San Mateo, Calif., Superior Court Judge Gerald Buchwald in 2013 cited the Treaty of Hidalgo in ruling that Khosla could keep Martins Beach private. However, on December 5, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Barbara Mallach ordered Khosla to reopen the gate on a private road. Additionally, a legislation sponsored by California state Senator Jerry Hill gave the state until December 31 to come to some sort of agreement with Khosla. If both parties cannot agree, the Coastal Commission has the option to use eminent domain to purchase the land from Khosla to re-establish access to the beach. Various estimates for purchasing the land range from $1 million to $10 million. Under eminent domain, Khosla must sell his property to the state.

Electrical Engineering fellowship for Indian BY A STAFF WRITER NIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Yash Thakur, an Indian American electrical engineering doctoral student at Penn State from Himachal Pradesh, has been awarded a $5,000 fellowship from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society (IEEE DEIS). He is one of only three recipients in the world to receive this honor for the 2015-16 academic year. The fellowships are awarded to further graduate education in electrical insulation and dielectric phenomena, and are open to students worldwide who are pursuing a doctorate degree. “The development of efficient, highperformance materials for electrical energy storage is essential to meet the ever-increasing demands for electrical energy,” said Thakur in a press release. Dielectric materials with high-energy

U

Yash Thakur density are desirable for a broad range of

modern power electronic systems such as medical devices, hybrid electrical vehicles, filters, switched-mode power supplies and power weapon systems. Besides high energy storage capability, it is important that these materials show low conduction loss to avoid overheating. For example, in hybrid electric vehicles, an extra cooling loop has to be introduced in the capacitor banks in order to prevent a runaway temperature increase caused by the conduction loss heating. Thakur was awarded the fellowship for his proposal on the study of high field conduction loss in dielectric polymers. The fellowship will help him to research fundamental mechanisms causing these conduction losses and to provide potential solutions to mitigate it. One promising way is by adding nanocomposites in the polymer matrix. The fellowship will support Thakur’s research, which is funded by the Office of Naval Research.

Indian students doing illegal jobs deported BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- The Department of Homeland security is keeping a tab on students on F-1 visas doing jobs outside of their institution of study, and if found to be working illegally, deporting them. An Indian newspaper report spoke about a student, Srikanth P., who had been deported. He was quoted as saying: “After reaching Hyderabad airport, I met a student who was already in USA and was deported for working there. He was working there at an eatery and had intended to leave his job fearing deportation but was caught on the last day of his job. The authorities checked with the eatery after he left and went back to the

university to question his eligibility to work.” The English daily also talked to a consultant in the education business, P. Anil Kumar, director, Youthworld Consulting. He said: “Most universities allow the students to work legally once they are on a curricular practical training or optional practical training programs. And in these cases, they are not deported. Students are being scrutinized heavily now.” Added the consultant: “Authorities are even going back to universities and checking on student attendance, checking with local part-time jobs and deporting students now. As there are ample part-time jobs, most students take up jobs on landing there. Shocked by the recent deportations, many students have

already left jobs.” The flow of students deported from various airports in the US to Hyderabad continued on January 3, too, with 10 more dejected students landing there, the paper reported. The students landed at the Shamshabad airport, taking the count to 25 by January 3. Immigration department authorities hinted at more deported students expected to reach here. The report said deported students shared stories of how “intense combing on all parttime illegal jobs in places like gas stations, supermarkets and eateries have prompted many of their friends to give up on the $ 5- 6 per hour jobs that many survive on.”

Guests included representatives from the offices of Congressman Tony Cardenas, LA Mayor Eric Garcetti, LA city councilman Felipe Fuentes, Senator Robert Hertzberg, Assemblywoman Patty Lopez and LAUSD board member Monica Ratliff. According to the 2010 Census, about 17 per cent of households in Pacoima are at or below the poverty level. A recent study by the Center for Southern California Studies at California State University, Northridge, showed that the proportion of families living at or below the poverty level remained extremely high in the Northeast San Fernando Valley with Pacoima exceeding countywide averages. In the past, the Sikh American community has provided food and needed items to the Fred Jordan Mission on Skid Row, but in recent years it has looked to support local families and neighbors in Pacoima through a holiday community event at its gurdwara as part of ‘seva’, meaning selfless service to others.

Indian engineer’s device on extent of eye injury BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian American engineer and an ophthalmologist in the US are developing a portable sensor that can quickly and inexpensively determine whether an eye injury is mild or severe. The device, called OcuCheck, measures levels of Vitamin C in the fluids that coat or leak from the eye, according to a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign statement. “The sensor takes advantage of the fact that the ocular tear film--the viscous fluid that coats the eyeball--contains low levels of ascorbic acid, which is just Vitamin C, while the interior of the eye contains much higher levels,” said the university’s bioengineering professor Dipanjan Pan. Pan is creating the device in collaboration with Carle ophthalmologist Leanne Labriola. “So the concept is, if there is severe damage to the eye that penetrates deeply, the ascorbic acid will leak out in high concentration.” Two post-doctoral researchers in Pan’s laboratory, Manas Gartia and Santosh Misra, helped develop the new sensor.

N

At present, those with eye injuries must find their way to a hospital to have their injuries assessed. The process is often complicated, timeconsuming and imprecise, Pan said. The sensor could speed efforts to determine the extent of eye injuries at accident sites, in the rural areas lacking ophthalmology specialists or on the battlefield, the researchers said. The researchers’ work was reported in the journal Scientific Reports.

said, “It is not new that ICE is doing raids. Immigration agents have been doing operations and terrorizing families across the country using whatever excuse they can to label a person a ‘priority for deportation.” “The difference here is that we know about them ahead of time and that gives us time to organize to keep our communities safe and to fight back when our people are targeted”, he said. DRUM has also asked immigrants have an emergency plan and gather documents, and told them not to open the door until they are shown a warrant signed by a judge. Do not give immigration agents your information. If they don’t have a warrant, immigration agents do not have a right to question anyone, or ask for information or identification”, says DRUM, urging immigrants organize to get individuals released and fight deportations.

Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal

BY A STAFF WRITER HACKENSACK, NJ -- A Glen Rock attorney has become the top law enforcement official in Bergen County. Bergen County Assignment Judge Bonnie Mizdol administered the oath in her courtroom on January 4 to new Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal, who also becomes the first Sikh county prosecutor in the state and the first of South Asian descent. Grewal introduced himself to his assistant prosecutors and investigators in a jokeladen speech. He praised the “tremendous reputation” of the prosecutor’s office and pledged to build on it. Grewal has been a federal prosecutor most of his career. He most recently served as chief of the economic crimes unit at the US Attorney’s Office in New Jersey. Gov. Chris Christie appointed Grewal to replace outgoing prosecutor John L. Molinelli, who had held the post since 2002. Molinelli plans to return to private practice at the firm of Price, Meese, Shulman and D’Arminio in Woodcliff Lake. State Sen. Kevin O’Toole, a Republican who represents parts of northwestern Bergen County, praised the appointment. Christie first nominated Grewal for the job in 2013, but the nomination never cleared the Senate. O’Toole believes the Senate will bless the choice this time and remove the “acting” part of the title for Gerwal, a Democrat. Grewal said he would keep an open door to his new staff.

Tips for immigrants to face ICE agents’ raids BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- The best way to keep immigrant communities and families safe is to make sure people know their rights, organize against the raids when they take place, and fight against the deportation of individuals targeted. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that it is preparing for a number of large-scale raids targeting recent immigrants who the DHS considers to be highpriority for deportation. The highest priority will be those who have final orders of deportations after January 1, 2014. Then, those who have missed their court dates or overstayed their visas after January 1, 2014. Although the operation is only supposed to target individuals in these categories, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents are known to broaden their operations to check the identity and background of other people in the household or even surrounding area, which means all immigrants should know their rights, regardless of whether they fit the announced ICE target. In response to the raids, Fahd Ahmed of DRUM (Desis Rising Up & Moving)

How to choose the right clothes for your body type LONDON: Sometimes getting the right clothes for one’s body type is the toughest choice that women have to make.Television presenter Genevieve Ni Reamoinn tells how to customize your wardrobe. l For apple body shape: Try wearing these with a skirt that sits on the hips and team with a V-neck top in a block color for perfect symmetry l Stay away from: Tapered trousers, cowl neck tops, tight knits and short jackets. l For pear body shape: Try wearing wide necklines and prints. Bootleg trousers are great for creating balance or, if you prefer skirts then A-line is the best cut. * Stay away from: Tight knits, pencil skirts, prints or bright colors on the bottom half. * For hourglass body: It’s the easiest shape to dress as most styles will suit the hourglass . Wear high-waisted skirts or dresses with large waistbands.

ancy travelling to two popular Unesco World Heritage Sites and a city of old-world charm and multiple religious faiths on a single journey? Come January 2016 and that’s exactly what you can do aboard a new ‘semi-luxury heritage circuit tourist train’ launched by IRCTC, a subsidiary of Indian Railways. Departing from the rather languid Safdarjung railway station here, the five-day-four night inaugural run of This train package first takes the train. makes it easy you to Varanasi and From accomfor tourist to thence to Khajuraho modation to visit three places and Agra, before transportation returning to Delhi. and food, everyin “Varanasi, Khajurathing is the a solo trip ho and Agra are responsibility of immensely popular among IRCTC. not only foreign tourists but also “We have Maharaja Indians. There are no trains that packages and normal trains. The package these three places in a solo trip,” has been made keeping in mind IRCTC Tourism Manager A.S. the different economical sections Pandey told IANS during the of society,” IRCTC Public Relations Officer Sandip Dutta told IANS. “Apart from cutlery, the food provided by IRCTC is same for all the three categories on the train (1st a/c, IInd a/c, three-tier a/c). The travellers are put up in luxury hotels at the three destinations and a/c buses are arranged for ground transportation,” Dutta added.

Spending the first night on the train, I and my fellow travellers arrived in Varanasi early in the morning. We soon headed to Sarnath. After spending some leisure time hopping around the city, it was time to witness the quintessential “Ganga Aarti” at Dashashwamedh Ghat. With Day 2 coming to an end, we headed towards our next destination, Khajuraho, which greeted us with an early morning wintry chill and misty surroundings, marking the beginning of Day 3. With sun setting behind the temples, I headed for a musical show, ending the stay at Khajuraho. Capturing every moment spent at the Taj, the day ended, making way for the final destination of the trip on last day. Braving the shivering morning cold of Agra city, we headed towards Fatehpur Sikri.

Well-tailored trousers are great on the hourglass figure, just be aware that your bottom can look bigger in prints. * Stay away from: large prints and baggy styles. * For Lean shape: Try high-waisted trousers or belted dresses. Cross over tops and wrap dresses work very well on this shape. Start with a cowl neck top to give your bust a more balanced look, team this with an A-line skirt or bootleg trousers. * Stay away from: Big statement styles and bodycon dresses.

People who often use emojis have sex on their mind: Survey

re you obsessed with sending emoji icons with every WhatsApp message or Facebook post? Check if sex is on your mind 24/7. According to an interesting survey, people who think about sex several times a day also use emoji icons the most often. Conducted by online dating website Match.com, the researchers found that something as innocuous as a food item emoji icon can be employed to denote body parts or sex, medicaldaily.com reported. “[Emoji users] want to give their texts more personality. Emoji users don’t just have more sex, they go on more dates and they are two times more likely to get married,” Helen Fisher, who led the survey told Time Magazine. The survey involving 5,000 people found that 36-40 percent of peo-

ple who think about sex several times a day use more than one emoji in every text. People who never think about sex said they used them less frequently. “Most people who reported thinking about sex once a day said they use emojis but not in every text,” the findings showed. The group that used emojis the least was those who said they think about sex just once a month. A previous study by Match.com — a dating platform that serves 25 countries in more than eight languages — revealed more than half of the men and women surveyed used the “wink” emoji to flirt with a date. The “smiley” emoji was the second most popular emoji to help people in courtship. The previous study also found that 54 percent of singles who use emojis have more sex than the 31 percent of those who just rely on their words.

Emotions do affect brain’s creative network: Study Emotional expressions affect the brain’s creativity network, says a new study, adding that happy and sad music evoke different neural patterns in the brain IANS, NEW YORK

E

motional expression affects the brain’s creativity network, says a new brain-scanning study of jazz pianists, adding that “happy” and “sad” music evoked different neural patterns in their brains. The workings of neural circuits associated with creativity are significantly altered when artists are actively attempting to express emotions, the researchers report. “The bottom line is that emotion matters. It can’t just be a binary situation in which your brain is one way when you’re being creative and another way when you’re not,” said senior author Charles Limb from University of California-San Francisco. “Instead, there are greater and lesser degrees of creative states, and different versions. And emotion plays a crucially important role in

these differences,” he explained. The team focused in a brain region known as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), which is involved in planning and moni-

Early sex puts teenagers at high infection risk SEOUL: Teenagers who experience their first sexual intercourse at an early age run a greater risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) which includes diseases such as gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, HIV or other infection, warns a study. Sexually transmitted infections are major causes of medical and psychological problems globally. “Our study suggests that it is important to consider the time period of first sexual intercourse and to reinforce a monitoring system along with the development of other preventive strategies,” the study said.

For the study, the researchers from Yonsei University in Seoul used data from a Korean national survey of youth risk behaviors that is conducted annually by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Responses of 22,381 adolescents with sexual intercourse experience were included for the analysis. Approximately 7.4 percent of boys and 7.5 percent of girls reported having STI. Both boys and girls, the chance of experiencing STIs increased as the age of first sexual intercourse decreased.

toring behavior. The researchers found that DLPFC deactivation was significantly greater when the jazz musicians improvised melodies intend-

ed to convey the emotion expressed in a “positive” image (a photograph of a woman smiling) than a “negative” image (same woman in mildly distressed state).

On the other hand, improvisations targeted at expressing the emotion in the negative image were associated with greater activation of the brain’s reward regions. “This indicates there may be different mechanisms for why it’s pleasurable to create happy versus sad music,” added first study author Malinda McPherson. For each musician, any brain activity data generated during these passive viewing periods, including emotional responses, were subtracted from that elicited during their musical performances. This allowed the researchers to determine which components of brain activity in emotional regions were strongly associated with creating the improvisations. Moreover, the research team avoided biasing the musicians’ performances with words like “sad” or “happy” when instructing the musicians before the experiments.
