Will Obama, Modi WALK THE TALK?

W
ill U.S. President Barack Obama take Narendra Modi for a casual walk across the street to Bombay Club in the American capital for a ‘chai pe charcha’ on bilateral ties when the Indian prime minister comes calling in September? It may not be as wild a guess as it seems at first glance. For of late “the bear is loose” — to use Obama’s own catch phrase — for his recent impromptu escapades from the “bubble” at the White House. Chief of Staff Denis McDonough suggested an afternoon coffee break, and without telling the press or most of the staff, the president walked a block and half to a nearby Starbucks outlet. “The bear is loose
again,” Obama told a staffer as the two walked out without jackets and with their shirt sleeves rolled up — tailed by White House reporters and the secret service in tow. “How’s the coffee?” a CBS News correspondent who just happened to be around, asked Obama as the commanderin-chief walked back to the West Wing with a paper cup in hand, greeting construction workers and waving at tourists on the way. “Uhh...it’s tea,” the president replied. The president’s staff, according to CBS News, says there’s no planned message in these impromptu outings, that he just likes to walk and talk, but they like the message they think it sends: regular guy. Then next day Obama took Education Secretary Arne Duncan for a short ride across the Potomac to grab a hamburger for lunch at the FireFlies, a small single storey restaurant in Alexandria,
US calls for efforts to protect oceans
US Secretary of State John Kerry
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry said the oceans are facing threats from over-fishing, pollution and acidification, and called for “a comprehensive, global strategy” to protect them, media reported on June 17. Kerry made the remarks while inaugurating a two-day international ocean conference hosted by the US Department of State,
to discuss the danger to the oceans and concrete actions that should be taken, Xinhua reported. Around 400 people from more than 80 nations, including World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, several heads of states as well as foreign ministers, were present at the “Our Ocean” conference held in Washington, D.C. “Stewardship of our ocean is not a one-person event, it is a national event, it is a country event, it is a universal requirement all across this planet,” Kerry told the conference participants. “The ocean today supports livelihoods of up to 12 percent of the world’s population. But it’s also essential to maintain the environment in which we all live,” he said. According to Kerry, one third of the world’s fish stocks are over exploited, and the rest are being fished to their absolute maximum sustainable level. “A significant chunk of marine life may simply die out because it can no longer live, no longer survive, in the oceans’ water,” said the American Secretary of State.
Virginia. Obama may be currently at odds with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, but four years ago he took his predecessor Dmitri Medvedev for a ride across the Potomac for lunch at his favorite hamburger joint, Ray's Hell Burger, in Arlington, Virginia. It was "Just a Couple of Guys Grabbing Burgers" as the New York Times headlined the summit lunch. So would it be a surprise if Obama takes Modi out for a little tete-a-tete with a once unwelcome guest to let bygones be bygones?

American embassy in Baghdad. Obama said in a letter to Congressional leaders that the force, which began deploying on June 15, has been sent “for the purpose of protecting US citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat,” news agency Xinhua reported. “This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed,” Obama wrote. Earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on June 14 ordered the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush to move from the North Arabian Sea into the Gulf, amid escalating violence in Iraq. The order will provide President Barack Obama additional flexibility should military options be required to protect American lives, citizens and interests in Iraq, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement, Xinhua reported.
Unending school shooting: Obama says America should be ashamed WASHINGTON: As America witnessed its 74th school shooting this week since the “massacre of innocents” at an elementary school 18 months ago, President Barack Obama said he was ashamed that America can’t put a stop to them. “We should be ashamed of that,” Obama said, hours after a 14-year-old was shot at an Oregon high school last week. “There’s no place else like this,” he said lamenting barring a fundamental shift in public opinion, “it will not change.” “My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage,” Obama said. No developed nation on earth would
put up with mass shootings that happen now once a week and disappear from the news within a day - no nation except America, Obama said as he took questions from young Americans through the social media site Tumblr. There have been 74 school shootings since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were shot to death, according to a group called Everytown for Gun Safety.

The word soccer originated in Britain at the end of the 19th century and was commonly used there, the findings showed. “Americans have long referred to Association Football as ‘soccer’, to the point where many people believe it is fact the word was invented in America,” wrote Stefan Szymanski, professor at University of Michigan in the U.S. “It appears that as the popularity of soccer has grown in the US, the word has been used less and less,” Szymanski added. ‘A strong India good for neighbors’ On his maiden visit to Bhutan, PM Narendra Modi stresses the need for forging closer ties with neighbors SIRSHENDU PANTH, THIMPHU
I
ndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, affirming that a “strong” and “prosperous” India stood to benefit its subcontinental neighbors, assured Bhutan that his regime would fulfil all commitments made by its predecessor and announced major trade concessions for the landlocked nation. Wrapping up his two-day official visit to Bhutan, his first abroad after he assumed office last month, Modi stressed the need for forging closer ties in tourism, hydropower and proposed an annual hill sports festival involving India’s northeastern states alongside Bhutan and Nepal. In a joint statement issued at the end of the visit, Bhutan agreed with India “not to allow each other’s territory to be used for interests inimical to the other”.
Addressing a joint session of Bhutan’s parliament, Modi, who arrived here on June 15, said if India progresses, it will directly impact the development of its neighbors. “Stability and development in India will help neighbors like Bhutan,” he said during a rousing speech which he delivered extempore in Hindi. Modi’s speech, which touched on a wide range of issues concerning South Asia and India-Bhutan relations, was heard in rapt attention by Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, his orange robed ministerial colleagues and other MPS who wore blue robes. Such was the impact of the address that the gathering broke into spontaneous applause in a nation where clapping is viewed — and resorted to — as the gesture to ward off evil spirits.

Among those who are understood to have been called are Kerala Governor Sheila Dikshit, Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan and Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan. Modi in a new avatar Now, the prime minister’s restraint and dignity are in marked contrast to his earlier combative persona. It cannot be gainsaid that his electoral success has either had a remarkable mellowing effect, or that Modi is really two individuals rolled into one AMULYA GANGULI, IANS
E
ven if the metamorphosis of Narendra Modi from a “hate figure to an avatar of modernity and progress”, as has been noted by the Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, has earned his party’s displeasure, the description is likely to seem apt to most people. Moreover, the transformation will appear startling because only a few months ago, Modi was at his vituperative best — or, rather, worst — to the
Modi not only intends to set behaviorial patterns but also implement his hands-on style of administration. extent of calling Tharoor’s companion of the time, Sunanda, who has since died, a “`54,000 crore girl friend”. The jibe was at her alleged involvement in an Indian Premium League (IPL) scam. Now, the prime minister’s restraint and dignity are in marked contrast to his earlier combative persona. It cannot be gainsaid that his electoral success has either had a remark-
able mellowing effect, or that Modi is really two individuals rolled into one. While his earlier avatar was all fire and brimstone, his latest individuality is nothing but sweetness and light. Besides, it isn’t only that the end of the poll campaign has brought the curtains down on his belligerence. He is now also living up to his image as the doer, who follows a punishing work schedule with an unremitting focus on governance. As his commandments to ministers and officials show — do not touch my feet, keep your offices clean, speak to the point, do not dawdle over files — Modi not only intends to set behavioral patterns but also implement his hands-on style of administration. From the commendation which he received from Sonia Gandhi for his promise on the women’s reservation bill to the proposal to introduce a diamond quadrilateral of bullet trains to complement the golden quadrilateral of highways, and the setting up of 100 world class cities, Modi can be said to have hit the ground running. True, much of this is still only pledges. It will take time for the results to become visible. What is reassuring, however, is the business-like aura which the prime minister projects. The impression which he conveys is that there will be no dragging of feet where official efforts are concerned. It is noteworthy that the new government hasn’t taken a single false step except for the V.K. Singh affair, where the former army chief apparently exceeded his brief as a minister in a matter concerning his successor who has been backed by Defense Minister Arun Jaitley. The earlier rumpus about Article 370 relating to Kashmir caused by a minister of state in the prime minister’s office has also died down. Perhaps Modi’s advice to ministers to conduct “research” before voicing their opinions has had an effect.
The Gandhis must vacate for an opposition to take shape SAEED NAQVI, IANS
A
fter the vigorous opening speech in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi’s rump of a party looked even more battered and bruised. The most reassuring news for them since the May 16 election results is spread across three columns of Times of India: ‘Gandhis will personally probe the poll defeat’. In other words the regular system of the famous A.K. Antony committees to investigate Congress defeats is being discarded. Antony, an acute Gandhi loyalist, never in the course of his numerous probes, turned the search lights on his political masters. But this time he may be left with no room for maneuver. The Gandhis will be on the dissection table. Reports of irreversible poor health may be leaked. What better way to stop the leak than sink the very idea of the Antony Committee. That the mother and son team have undertaken to probe the
party’s rout implies that their leadership was not flawed, that the fault for the debacle lies elsewhere. The decision also implies that at least the Gandhis believe there still is a party under their leadership, intact. Senior leaders have been charting their own course. As soon as Commerce Minister Anand Sharma sensed rout, he obtained from Sonia the permission to represent the Congress at President Jacob Zuma’s inauguration in South Africa. Shashi Tharoor, with eye always on the main chance, began to publicly wish Narendra Modi were his leader, inviting a rebuke from Mani Shankar Aiyar who went on to say on TV that “Rahul should be allowed to do the good work he is doing”. The greatest security for the Gandhis, one which will keep them on their perch, is that there is no life left in
the rump to ask questions. Those who could have asked questions, like Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, have been kept outside the paddock. The simple principle of dynasties is: the crown prince must not have a challenger. The queen must never be upstaged. The truth is that the make-belief shrouding the last days of the Gandhis cannot last very much longer. Their saga is not likely to end in tragedy. Tragedies require a quality of heroism which is missing here. Their’s is shaping up to a pathetic end. Are they really waiting for another rout in the state elections? It is very easy for Sonia Gandhi to blame the spectacular defeat on scams, the party’s inability to communicate, unmotivated cadres, debilitating bipolarity at the top, unidentifiable leadership, a formidable list. Will she ever admit to herself that
she was badly advised by a concentric circle of advisers who did not have their fingers on the pulse? It will be an act of great courage to face the unbelievably harsh truth. Never has a political family been so universally hated, despised, loathed. This was part of the energy which became a wave for Modi. Sonia Gandhi must reflect (the young man seems incapable of any reflection) how adoration in 2004, when she refused the prime ministership, turned to such undiluted disgust by 2014. From the very beginning, the Congress president demonstrated her inability to distinguish between loyalty and sycophancy. Remember Oscar Fernandez weeping inconsolably because “Madame” had refused the crown. And the dim Renuka Chaudhury let loose upon chat show audiences as some sort of a Congress intellectual. She too was rewarded for having wept copiously at “Mam’s” refusal of the crown.

Gupta’s lawyer Seth Waxman argued his case during a hearing before a three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals here on June 16. Gupta, 65, was not present for the hearing, during which Waxman argued that his client personally did not make any money from the trades done by Galleon hedge fund founder Raj Rajratnam and “nor had any expectation of making any money.” Waxman said that Gupta should not be permanently barred from serving as a director on a board of a public company or taking up the role of investment adviser. 40 Indian construction workers kidnapped in Iraq
Baghdad on the brink of collapse?
15 killed in fresh militant attack in Kenya
BAGHDAD: Amidst reports of massive fighting between Iraqi security forces backed by Shiite militia and Sunni militants to take control of the city of Tal Afar in the northern Nineveh province, Sunni militants have attacked Iraq’s largest oil refinery in Salahudin province on June 18, sparking a huge fire, a provincial police source said. Hundreds of gunmen, including the militants linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), an Al Qaeda offshoot, waged an attack at dawn on the refinery compound in Baiji city from several directions with machine guns and mortar rounds, the source said. Earlier, insurgent groups overran the city of Baiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad, as well as large parts of the predominantly Sunni province of Salahudin, including its capital Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad. The deterioration in security situation in Iraq started last week when bloody clashes broke out between the Iraqi security forces and Sunni militants.
NAIROBI: In a fresh attack a day after massacring 48 people in a Kenyan coastal town, Al-Shabaab militants killed 15 people in a village in the same area, police said on June 17. Lamu county Commissioner Stephen Ikua said the militants killed 15 people in Poromoko village Monday night, a day after they massacred 48 people in the Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni. “We have received reports of fresh attacks and we have sent a contingent of police officers to establish the number of casualties and nature of attack,” Xinhua quoted Ikua as saying. The attack came despite strong government assurances that it would protect the citizens and arrest the assailants. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for both attacks. In its radio broadcast, the militant group said it carried out fresh attacks in Mpeketoni and killed more than 20 people, including police.

ndia on June 18 said 40 Indians working for a Turkish construction company have been abducted in violence-hit Iraq’s Mosul area which has been taken over by Sunni militants. The external affairs ministry here did not say which militant group had seized the workers. Earlier media reports blamed the abduction on the Sunni insurgents of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) who have seized the cities of Mosul and Tikrit and are advancing menacingly towards capital Baghdad. External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the workers mostly belonged to the country’s northern states such as Punjab and worked for the Tariq Noor al Huda construction company. He said no ransom call had been received and the Iraq Red Crescent had “indicated to us that they were kidnapped”. He said their current location was not
known. Asked about the safety of the Indians, the spokesperson said they were “trying to establish contact” and that “there are no guarantees”. Asked if the workers were kidnapped while being evacuated, he declined to reveal details.

External affairs ministry in New Delhi has not said which militant group had seized the workers in Mosul, Iraq “Information flow in an evolving situation is uncertain. I can only confirm that they’ve been kidnapped and we are doing everything possible to bring them back safely,” he said. He said India will not leave any stone unturned in providing help to its nationals in Iraq. He also said that the Indian embassy in Baghdad was not to be shut down. On the situation of the 46 Indian nurses in Tikrit, the spokesperson said the Indian mission is in
out the nurses who want to return. Some of the nurses have, however, opted to stay put, he informed. The spokesperson also said that 200 Indians in Najaf working for a Turkish company were “feeling uneasy” and wanted to return. The Indian mission is working to bring them back, and the first lot would be leaving Najaf on Friday. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has also made phone calls to the relatives of a number of people stranded in Iraq.
SOuTH ASiA 177 terrorists killed in North Waziristan: Pakistan Army
Can Pakistan be saved from going the Iraq way? C UDAY BHASKAR, NEW DELHI
T
he Pakistan military launched Zarb-e-Azb, a major offensive operation against terror groups operating from North Waziristan on June 15. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declared: “We will no longer allow Pakistan to be a sanctuary for terrorism at any cost.” The military in turn has highlighted that it is acting on the “directions” of the civilian government and has “been tasked to eliminate these terrorists regardless of hue and color, along with their sanctuaries”. This is a welcome development, in that the Pakistan military has publicly reiterated two
critical determinants; first that it is operating as per the directives of the elected government and second, that it will eliminate “terrorists regardless of hue and color”. The Pak military has demonstrated that it has the ability to apply the pressure on the adversary. The true test of Zarb-e-Azb will be its strategic and political underpinning. Will Islamabad and Rawalpindi arrive at that final and irrevocable determination to sever links with Muridke — the headquarter of groups like the Lashkar and other such centers? Sharif and Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif, have a rare opportunity to save Pakistan from the kind of specter that now threatens Iraq.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan military on June 17 said that 177 “terrorists have been killed” in major military operation against the local and foreign militant groups in North Waziristan tribal region over the weekend. “Operation in North Wazirastan Agency is progressing as per plan. No operation in civil populated areas has been started so far,” the army said, adding North Wazirastan Agency has been isolated by deploying troops along its border with neighboring agencies and other tribal regions to block any movement of terrorists in and out of the Agency. Six hardcore terrorist hideouts were destroyed by jet aircraft on June 17 in Shawal area of North Wazirastan Agency, bordering Afghanistan. The spokesman said troops have cordoned off all terrorists bases, including the main town of Mir Ali and Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan.
Voting ends in Afghan runoff polls KABUL: Polling in Afghanistan’s presidential runoff election concluded on June 14 evening and counting of ballots has begun, an official said. “The polling, which began 7 a.m. Saturday has ended at 4 p.m.,” Xinhua quoted Independent Election Commission (IEC) commissioner Sareer Ahmad Barmak as saying on June 14. The Afghan election officials said that the election was relatively peaceful, barring some attacks and complaints. The officials said the IEC has taken note of allegations of fraud and all those allegations are being looked into. The runoff election will decide whether former foreign minister
Abdullah Abdullah or former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai leads the country into a new era with declining international military and civilian assistance. The two entered a runoff after none of the eight candidates obtained an outright victory or more than half of the valid votes in the first round held April 5. The Taliban insurgent group fighting the government has vowed to disrupt the election process. At least 10 people, including several security forces, were killed and nearly 100 others were wounded in Taliban attacks, the Public Health Minister Suraya Dalil said.
MQM asks govt to rein in on terrorists LONDON: Leader of Pakistan’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party Altaf Hussain said on June 15 it was time to wipe out the terrorists who are eating away the country’s very vitality, and stressed terrorists and Pakistan could not go together. Hussain said terrorism and Pakistan were not compatible, if Pakistan has to exist, terrorists must be wiped out, Geo News reported. The statement came as several highprofile foreign terrorist commanders were killed in the bombings by jet fighters in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Agency (NWA).
Addressing a gathering through phone on the occasion of 36th foundation day of MQM-linked All Pakistan Muttahida Students Organization, here, Hussain said his party was against all sorts of terrorism, violence and wanted peace.

Comedy might be nasty: Saif Saif Ali Khan, whose movie ‘Humshakals’ releases on June 20, talks about his comedy roles IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctor Saif Ali Khan, awaiting the release of entertainer Humshakals says “comedy can be ‘little dangerous’ if not done well”. Bollywood has been high on sex comedies off late, but when asked if Saif would be game for it, he said: “It will be nice if it’s funny. Comedy is a very liberating thing. Anything can be funny and I feel comedy is a little dangerous because at times there can be no respect or dignity if it’s not shot well.” He said, “It should not be dirty. There is nothing wrong with a sex comedy because it is something people are nervous to talk

Meanwhile, the actor is busy promoting Humshakals, which features a slew of actors including Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. Saif says the Sajid Khan-directorial is for the wider audience. “I wanted to work with Sajid and we (actors) should all come out of our comfort zone...Sajid works hard to entertain people. Humshakals is his kind of comedy and that’s the idea — you have to make a film which is wider and Sajid is one of the top names in the film industry,” Saif said.

‘Badlapur’ surprises actress Huma Qureshi NEW DELHI: When actress Huma Qureshi agreed to be a part of Sriram Raghavan’s directorial titled Badlapur, she wasn’t aware of the place by the same name. She got intrigued by the title of the film and quizzed the team on the same. The Delhi girl was pleasantly surprised on learning that Badlapur is a place in Mumbai. The title of her next film caught her fancy so much that she wanted to visit the place. She recently made a day trip to Badlapur and had “fun”. “Yes. Badlapur is an interesting name. It was a fun trip,” Huma said in a statement. She will soon start shooting for the film which also features Varun Dhawan. The Gangs Of Wasseypur actress, who recently bought a new house, is trying her hand at being an interior designer for her place. She wants to give it a “personal touch” of her distinct taste and wants to lend an eclectic style to her new residence.
It’s Hollywood calling for actor Sana Khan
Fugly: At last a social credit showcase
MUMBAI: Sana Khan has been lying low after featuring in Salman Khan-starrer Jai Ho, but that’s because she’s been waiting for the right project to come her way. Now, the grapevine is abuzz that the Bigg Boss 6 beauty is heading to Hollywood. Sana, who has featured in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films in the past, has now given her nod to a project to be directed by a “whiz kid director from Hollywood”, a source told IANS. The source said that Sana will be “essaying the title role of the queen in a magnum opus costume drama”, which deals with the “life of one of the royal figures from Hyderabad.
Film Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Mohit Marwah, Kiara Advani, Vijendra Singh, Arfi Lamba; Director: Kabir Sadanand: Rating: ****
L
et’s first get the picture right. Contrary to what the trailers and promotional images suggest, Fugly is not a Fukrey — friendly flick about four friends having a ball in life. This film means business. Light on top and substantial underneath, this is the Rang De Basanti of the post-Narendra Modi era. Thoughtful and at times brilliant, it tells us a great deal about the state of a culture and people searching for reasons to keep the spirit of nationalism alive as selfserving corruption grows all around. Fugly is the cinema of social awakening. It tackles issues such as gay prostitution, khaki-clad fascism and the excess of television
journalism, perhaps cramming in too many social issues in order to make the subject relevant and res-
onant. And yet nowhere does the director seem to bite into more than he can chew. In one of the many striking sequences that coil themselves around the four young lives with impetuous intensity, we see random images of people on the city streets misbehaving mostly with women. Milind Joga’s camera seems to move concernedly through the streets of Delhi and Gurgaon in search of answers for the moral bankruptcy around us. This then, is the portrait of a nation grappling with damnation as seen through the eyes of four impetuous youngsters. The actors get it right from the word go. Right away, let’s applaud the director for
giving us four bright newcomers, two of whom are natural born stars. Erratic and over emphatic at times, what works for the narrative is its supremely active heart and soul. The large chunk of the film when Devi gets sexually humiliated by the neighborhood grocer and her friends’ outrage leading to unforeseen tragedy, is exceptionally even in tone and sure handed in execution. But then, various debauched politicians show up to mess up our protagonists’ lives. The ending will shock and move audiences. Two of the actors Mohit Marwah and Kiara Advani are star material. This film possesses a very rare virtue. A conscience. — Subhash K Jha

Nothing ‘Preity’ about ‘Ness’ affair MUMBAI: She may not be giving any blockbuster but actress Preity Zinta shocked the nation when industrialist Ness Wadia was on June 14 booked over an alleged molestation charge made by his former girlfriend and actress Preity Zinta. The Bombay Dyeing scion denied the charges, while Preity said “I’ve truth by my side”. The first information report (FIR) was lodged on the basis of a detailed written complaint handed over at the Marine Drive police station by Zinta late June 12. But Wadia has said the charges were “baseless” and he was “shocked at the complaint”. An investigating officer said police have started calling witnesses and will also scan the CCTV footage of the alleged incident which took place May 30 in Mumbai during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. On June 12 night, Zinta, in a written complaint accused Wadia, whom she dated for five years till 2009, of molesting and abusing her. Among other things, Zinta has accused Wadia of grabbing her hand and abusing her during a cricket match at Wankhede Stadium here. Wadia issued a statement on June 13 denying her allegations and termed it as “totally false and baseless.” In a twist to the case, the Wadia group has filed a police complaint claiming they received threatening calls and a text message from an underworld don warning that their “business will be in trouble” if the actress was harassed. A secretary to Nusli Wadia received calls on his cell phone from a person.

INDIAN PROF PROMOTED WHILE IN JAIL BY A STAFF WRITER
C
ONNECTICUT -- Ravi S h a n k a r, 3 9 , a n I n d i a n American associate professor of English at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in New Britain, Conn., was promoted to full professor while in jail. University officials claim that they were not aware he was incarcerated until after the decision on promotion was taken. A poet in resident at the university, Shankar is in jail waiting for his next court date. He faces charges from arrests in 2012, including violation of probation, criminal impersonation and motor vehicle charges. Shankar was also convicted of driving under the influence and making a false statement, according to court documents. “This is a very complex situation, but the simple answer is, it was my responsibility to inform the board of regents and I did not,” CCSU president
Prof. Ravi Shankar
Jack Miller said in a statement. “At the time of the board decision, I
was not aware that Professor Shankar had been incarcerated. I have asked my staff to conduct a full investigation of all of the legal actions, when we knew of them, and the various processes involved.” Connecticut State Senator Toni Boucher said there was no excuse for what happened. “Though Miller has taken responsibility for his action, the board of regents should be embarrassed. They should be doing background checks when considering a major promotion,” she said. Boucher said Shankar had been in jail for five days and some charges had been on the docket for years. Says Shankar: “In August 2012 after being arrested for the third time, I take seriously my responsibilities as an educator and a role model, and am deeply distraught at the concatenation of bad luck and worse judgment that has wrought such havoc on all that I hold dear.
Potential non-insulin drug developed BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK -- A young Indian American scientist has developed a potential non-insulin drug candidate for diabetic patients that can help eliminate the risk of low-blood glucose shock in case of an insulin overdose. Arnab De, a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Columbia University here, has developed the non-insulin drug candidate in collaboration with Richard DiMarchi of Indiana University. “Patients use insulin to keep their sugar levels in check but an overdose can lead to low blood-glucose which may cause diabetic-coma and be life-threatening. Insulin treatment has also been reported to cause weight-gain that may exacerbate a diabetic condition”, says De. “We find that there is a peptide hormone in the gut called GLP1 that increases the secretion of insulin only when the blood glucose is high. This effectively eliminates the risk of hypoglycemic shock. Another advantage is that GLP1 administration has been found to stimulate weight-loss. “The hormone offers the promise of revolutionizing the treatment of Type II diabetes and reduce obesity,” he said. “Needless to say, this will be very helpful for patients as we might have a formulation that needs to be taken only once a week as opposed to after every meal,” De said. Mozumdar said the development of a GLP-1 based prodrug represented a patient-friendly, diabetic therapeutic. “It is a most remarkable breakthrough which might also help to defend against obesity and perhaps against Alzheimer’s disease, too. There is a huge market for such a therapeutic in India given the growing number of patients,” Mozumdar said. As per estimates by The International Diabetes Federation, around one in five individuals suffer from some form of
obesity. These individuals are three times more prone to heart attacks or stroke and five times more likely to develop adult-onset of diabetes vis-a-vis individuals without the syndrome. Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation has applied for patents internationally on these prodrugs in the world-wide market. De has been conferred the prestigious Young Investigator’s Award by the American Peptide Society.

AN FRANCISCO (CA) -- Nirav Tolia, the Indian American CEO and co-founder of the social network Nextdoor, has pleaded not guilty to felony hit-and-run charges at his May 27 court appearance. Tolia was charged in San Mateo County earlier in the month over an accident that took place in August just south of San Francisco that left a woman injured. Patrice Motley, who filed a civil lawsuit against Tolia, described him as driving recklessly. According to the complaint and a police report, Tolia switched lanes to overtake a vehicle, cutting Motley off and causing her to spin out of control across three lanes of traffic and crash into the median. Tolia allegedly left the scene without stopping. Tolia’s lawyer, Daniel L. Barton, a partner at Nolan Armstrong & Barton in Palo Alto, Calif., said there was nothing unusual about his client’s actions. Barton said that the police report indicated that his client was driving at a safe and lawful speed and the other vehicle was driving faster. According to a California Highway Patrol report, both Tolia and Motley told the police that they were driving at about 55 to 60 miles an hour at the time of the accident on Highway 101, though Motley said Tolia’s BMW SUV was driving slightly faster than her Honda del Sol. According to Tolia, he didn’t believe his actions caused Motley to lose control of her vehicle and that he didn’t know she was injured. The charges are unrelated to Tolia’s position as CEO of Nextdoor.

Indian faces 10-yr jail for stealing trade secrets BY A STAFF WRITER
T
R E N TO N ( N J ) — A n engineer who formerly lived in Mahwah has admitted to stealing trade secrets from two medical technology companies based in northern New Jersey, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced. Ketankumar Maniar, 37, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and attempted theft of trade secrets. Maniar, an Indian national, has been in custody since his June 2013 arrest. He worked as an engineer at C.R. Bard, based in Murray Hill, from 2004 to 2011, and at Becton, Dickinson and Co., based in Franklin Lakes, from 2012 to 2013. While working for the medical technolog y companies, Maniar downloaded files with product information onto computer storage devices, including external hard drives and thumb drives, court documents said. He also used his work email accounts to forward trade secrets to his personal accounts. FBI agents seized at least one hard drive containing Bard and Becton trade secrets in a June 20, 2013 search of a New Jersey hotel room where Maniar stayed while planning a move back to India. Maniar faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count of stealing trade secrets. Sentencing is scheduled for September 23.
Chemical spray in school lands 24 students in hospital BY A STAFF WRITER
J
ERSEY CITY (NJ) -- Two dozen students and a security guard at School 11 in Jersey City were hospitalized after a chemical irritant was sprayed inside the school. Ten of the people were taken to Jersey City Medical Center (JCMC) and 15 were transported to CarePoint Health Christ Hospital, also in Jersey City, after they were initially treated at the scene for respiratory and eye problems. JCMC spokesman Mark Rabson said that by noon, the patients were released. Sources said a ‘non-lethal spray’ was released in a classroom but that the person who sprayed the chemical fled the scene. Two teachers were also in the classroom at the time the chemical was sprayed and the school was then evacuated. Teachers and students were allowed to re-enter the school at 10:45 a.m. after the Jersey City Hazmat unit said the school was safe. Investigators are currently testing the residue left in the classroom to determine what kind of chemical was sprayed.

He is currently free on a $750,000 bail and has surrendered his passport. Two Indians charged with healthcare fraud
N
BY A STAFF WRITER
EW JERSEY-The owners of a New Jersey-based mobile diagnostic testing company have been charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, for allegedly forging doctors’ signatures on phony reports. Nita Patel and Kirtish Patel, both 51, of Rockaway, allegedly forged the signatures of physicians who never read the diagnostic reports for about half the business’s clients over a twoyear period. Nita Patel is the owner of Heart Solutions, and Kirtish Patel is the principle officer of Biosound Medical Services, Inc., both located in Parsippany. Biosound was established in 1999, while Heart Solutions was founded in 2011. Their companies were responsible for tests that include ultrasounds, echocardiograms and nerve conduction studies, according to the complaint. The companies were then meant to send test results to reading physicians, who would interpret the results and create reports and then send them back to referring physicians, and bill Medicare and other payers for the tests, the reading physicians’ interpretations and the results of the reports.
Former and current employees informed the FBI that rather than paying physicians for a reading or to interpret results of a diagnostic test, Kirtish Patel would read the results himself and Nita Patel would either photocopy or electronically cut and paste a physician’s signature onto a diagnostic report written by an employee, the Montville Patch reported. Biosound would then bill Medicare and other companies for performance of the testing and reading. During a search of the business on June 9, Nita Patel admitted to Federal Bureau of Investigations agent James Boazzo that she and Kirtish Patel regularly forged photocopied physician signatures onto Biosound diagnostic test reports that were never interpreted by a referring physician. Neither of them are certified physicians. The investigation also uncovered a container of cut- up pieces of paper with signatures from physicians at the Biosound office. The charge of conspiracy to commit health care fraud carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, US Attorney Paul J. Fishman’s office said in the announcement on June 9.

Chatwal and his associates induced straw donors to make the campaign contributions, promising them that they would be reimbursed. A straw donor is someone who illegally uses someone else’s money to make campaign contributions in his or her own name. Chatwal orchestrated a scheme to make approximately $188,000 in campaign contributions to three candidates for federal office via straw donors and he often arranged for the straw donors to be reimbursed through his associates, ultimately paying for the reimbursed contributions with funds belonging to Chatwal or one of Chatwal’s companies.
$1K bogus bills found; 5 students charged

EW MILFORD (NJ) -- The Secret Service says it has recovered more than $1,000 in counterfeit bills allegedly printed by a teenager using an inkjet printer. Five New Milford High School students are facing charges after counterfeit $20 bills with the same serial numbers began surfacing at local businesses over a four-week period. The police say one teen printed $5 and $20 bills, all with the same serial numbers, and then passed them out to four friends. The teens allegedly used the money at a local 7-Eleven and two other retailers in Paramus and Dumont. Eventually, a clerk at a Dunkin’ Donuts spotted the bogus bills and reported it. “Detectives reviewed video surveillance and noticed the offenders had New Milford attire on,” New Milford Police Chief Frank Papapietro says. The police and the Secret Service worked with the school to positively identify the teens. The superintendent says they even successfully passed one of the bills in the cafeteria. The school is now conducting its own internal investigation and says the students involved will face disciplinary action.

The suspect made off with hundreds of dollars from the register in a dark-colored sedan. He’s described as a black male, 25 years old with medium skin complexion. Investigators are using the available surveillance video to help determine the identity of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ridgefield Park police at (201) 6416400.

Chicago Sikhs take out Memorial Day parades
C
BY A STAFF WRITER
HICAGO (IL) -- Sikh American community members of Chicago participated in the Memorial Day Parade on May 24 with a float, flags, posters, banners and a walking unit to honor and commemorate Sikh’s Contributions in World Wars. The banners featured photos and quotations which highlight the contributions of Sikh soldiers to the success of the Allied Troops during World War I and II. This was the third year that the community has participated in the annual procession. Sikh Soldiers who gallantly fought and sacrificed their lives for the success of the Allies in World Wars I & II were part of British-India Army. They bravely fought for the allies in France, Belgium, Italy, Israel and many other battle fronts. In the two world wars, 83,005 Sikh soldiers died and 109,045 were wounded while fighting for the Allied forces. “It was wonderful to see the Sikh Americans amongst the marching men and women who serve in the military services. Sikhs have a strong military heritage, it would be ironic not to let them serve their country in uniform due to their articles of faith, beard and turban,” said Rajinder Singh Mago. The two-hour-long parade organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

and Special Events stepped off at noon and proceeded south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street. There were more than 150 contingents in the parade. The Sikh unit participation was coordinated by Sarwan Singh Raju. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Lieutenant Colonel Tammy Duckworth the Iraq war veteran, former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and the Congresswoman of Illinois’ 8th Congressional District were the parade’s grand marshals. Preceding the parade, they laid wreaths at the Eternal Flame on Daley Plaza.
Democratic congresswoman Tammy Duckworth struggled to hold back tears during the wreath-laying ceremony to honor fallen soldiers. She lost her legs and partial use of an arm when a rocket-propelled grenade hit the Black Hawk helicopter she was piloting in Iraq in 2004. The Chicago parade, started in 1870, is considered one of the largest Memorial Day parades in the nation. Participants in the parade include area high school Marching Bands, Drum and Bugle Corps, as well as many Veterans’ and Civil War Enactment groups, 6,000 JROTC students, and the

military with equipment. The Chicago Sikhs also participated in another Memorial Day Parade in Itasca Illinois coordinated by Kuldip Singh Makkar. The parade started from Bryn Mawr & Catalpa streets and ended at the Itasca train station. Sikh martial art “Gatka” was demonstrated as hundreds of spectators watched. The Chicago Sikh community also participated in Memorial Day Observance Ceremonies at Hoffman Estates Veterans Memorial Cemetery Site and at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schaumburg Illinois. The program included recognition of deceased military members followed by a moment of silence and musical tributes to military personnel and veterans of the army, marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. A special memorial address was given by 1st. Lt. David M. Murphy, Pillars of Honor President. Commander Marco Dabetic of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2202 received a special award. The ceremonies ended with a picnic in the garden decorated with posters of Sikh Soldiers from world wars I & II. Memorial Day has a rich history. It began shortly after the Civil War ended when General John Logan proclaimed that the 30th day of May be designated for the purpose of decorating the graves of soldiers who died. It was first observed on May 30, 1868.
Alderman and Police chief discuss safety steps

ALATINE (IL) -- The Sikh Religious Society (SRS) Palatine Illinois invited Chicago Region’s special agent in-charge Robert J. Holley for a friendly visit to its gurdwara in Palatine, IL on May 30. The purpose of the visit was to meet and get to know each other. Holley, who was appointed as the special agent in-charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Chicago Field Division in November, 2013, has made it apoint to reach out to various communities in his jurisdiction. Holley began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1995. Prior to that, he served nine years in the US Army as an infantry officer. Holley was welcomed by the society president Jasbir Kaur Saluja, a few board members and community leaders, and given a tour of the facilities. Jay and Jas Singh of Bloomingdale, IL presented him with a bouquet of flowers and Holley reacted by saying: “This is the first time anyone has ever given me flowers.” Holley was also treated to an informational presentation about Sikhs. “The presentation was to create an awareness of Sikh appearance, turban, beard, articles of faith, and external tangible symbols which are constant reminders of the core Sikh values,” explained Rajinder Singh Mago, coordinator of the event. In turn, Holley explained his job responsibilities and the working structure of his staff and various departments, and emphasized his personal passion about the security of citizens. His past experience and expertise happen to be international counter-terrorism. A free-flowing dialogue during a question-answer session ensued where curbing the prevalent hate crimes against

Sikhs and mitigation of safety and security concerns, and how to complain were discussed. “We don’t want another Oak Creek here,” said Saluja. Holley even sat on the floor to observe the Sikh worship congregation, listened to the keertan (Sikh hymns) and was invited to address the gurdwara congregation. He
introduced himself to the community and assured his personal attention in case of a need. He also partook “langar” (community meal) and continued conversation in a cordial environment. His visit lasted several hours, longer than originally planned. Recruitment from the community in FBI was also discussed.

T. LOUIS (MO) – St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson went head-to-head with city aldermen recently while discussing crime in the city. The chief noted that more than 500 people had either been shot so far in 2014 and were in danger of being shot. Overall, homicides are up 44 per cent this year from last. Discussions are under way for crossdeputation, where city and county officers could work together and arrest suspects across jurisdiction in bordering areas like Jennings. But Alderman Antonio French says a lot of question remain. “What exactly our officers would be doing on the other side of the county line, how far they would go and vice versa,” French said. “It does make sense especially on the bordering wards and bordering neighborhoods for there to be some cooperation.” The chief says plans are already in place for Fair St. Louis. About 500 city officers will be on duty with additional help from the county and Highway Patrol. “We’ve canceled all the days off for all the officers in the department So, nobody’s scheduled off in recreation,” Dotson said. Chief Dotson also emphasized the value a closed circuit monitoring system will have for solving crime. That is part of a bond issue headed to voters this November.

The new system can track a football in 3D space using low-frequency magnetic fields IANS, NEW YORK
W
hile referees draw the flak in the ongoing football World Cup in Brazil for controversial decisions, referees in the U.S. can heave a sigh of relief. They may soon have a new way of determining whether a football team has scored a touchdown or got a first down. Researchers have developed a system that can track a football in threedimensional space using low-frequency magnetic fields.
“Low frequency magnetic fields do not interact very strongly with the human body so they are not affected by the players on the field or the stadium environment,” said David Ricketts, an associate professor at North Carolina State University in the US. The researchers designed and built a low-frequency transmitter that is integrated into a football, and is within the standard deviation of accepted professional football weights. Antennas, placed around the football field, receive signals from the trans-
mitter and track its location. The technology could be particularly useful for situations when the ball is blocked from view such as goal-line rushing attempts when the ball carrier is often buried at the bottom of a pile of players. “The technology could also be useful for tracking the forward progress of the ball or for helping viewers follow the ball during games with low visibility - such as games played during heavy snow,” Ricketts said. The study appeared in the journal IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine.

New protocol to let you know who is using your web data IANS, NEW YORK
O
nce you share your data with a private company, say a bank, for your online transactions, you hardly have any control over who exactly is using or misusing your data. That could soon change as researchers are now developing a protocol they call “HTTP with Accountability”, or HTTPA which will automatically monitor the transmission of private data and allow the data owner to examine how it is being used. With HTTPA, each item of private data would be assigned its own uniform resource identifier
(URI) - a key component of the Semantic Web - a new set of technologies championed by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This would convert the web from, essentially a collection of searchable text files, into a giant database. Remote access to a web server would be controlled much the way it is now through passwords and encryption. But every time the server transmitted a piece of sensitive data, it would also send a description of the restrictions on the data’s usage. And it would log the transaction, using only the URI, somewhere in a network of encrypted, special-purpose servers. “It is not
that difficult to transform an existing website into an HTTPAaware website,” said Oshani Seneviratne from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US. “On every HTTP request, the server should say, ‘OK, here are the usage restrictions for this resource’, and log the transaction in the network of special-purpose servers,” Seneviratne added. HTTPA would be voluntary. It would be up to software developers to adhere to its specifications when designing their systems. But HTTPA compliance could become a selling point for companies offering services that handle private data, researchers added.

Telangana to celebrate Bonalu IANS, HYDERABAD
T
he Telangana government has decided to officially celebrate Bonalu and Bathukamma, the Hindu folk festivals of the region. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao with senior officials and public representatives belonging to various political parties. Excise Minister Padma Rao told reporters that the orders declaring Bonalu and Bathukamma as state festivals as state festivals will be issued soon. The chief minister directed the officials to ensure that the festivals are celebrated in a grand
manner. As the two festivals reflect the culture of Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government has decided to declare them state festivals. Bonalu is celebrated in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and other parts of the region during the month of ‘Ashada’ (July-August). The women make offerings in the form of food to goddess Mahankali in specially decorated pots. During the month-long festival, people also hold ‘rangam’ or forecasting the future, organize processions and cultural events. ‘Bathukamma’, another key festival of Telangana, is celebrated during September-October. It reflects the rich culture of region.
he Supreme Court on June 17 dismissed a plea by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa seeking that the trial in a disproportionate assets case be put on hold till a Bangalore court decides the ownership of the immovable assets alleged to be hers. “We find no merit, dismissed,” said the bench of Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh, dealing a blow to the chief minister. The trial over the disproportionate assets — valued at `660 million — has been going on in a special court in Bangalore since 2010.
J. Jayalalithaa
Appearing for Jayalalithaa, counsel Shekhar Naphade assailed the special court for committing
impropriety by not carrying out the orders of the Madras High Court to first decide the title of the immovable assets shown to be that of Jayalalithaa. Counsel for the vigilance and anti-corruption department told the court that the special court in Bangalore has not refused to comply with the orders of the Madras High Court but has only said that it would hear claims over the immovable properties before the final arguments. The department has opposed Jayalalithaa’s plea seeking stay of trial court proceedings till the matter regarding the ownership of the assets shown to be hers was settled.
New board to oversee toddy industry IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
K
erala toddy, popular among locals and tourists, will get a boost with the state government planning to set up a board to oversee the functioning of the traditional industry. Kerala Excise Minister K. Babu said: “We have decided to set up a new Neera-Toddy Board that will look after the interests of the toddy industry. We will give preference to those toddy tappers, who are not having a job.”
Toddy is tapped from the coconut bunches and collected in a mud pot. Due to the sediments in the pot, juice collected in four hours time gets fermented and turns into toddy, which has an alcohol content of 5 to 8 per cent. While Neera, a coconut water-based soft drink, is a non-alcoholic, mineral rich and nutritious health
drink. In the past, this was one of the most popular traditional industry in the state, with an employment of more than a hundred thousand. Babu told the state assembly that the government has done its best for the industry. “We have given them lot of exemption with regards to the security deposit.”

‘Organic’, ‘natural’ packaged food may be unhealthy
US teens losing interest in sex, smoking: Survey
NEW YORK: Do you get lured by healthy words such as “antioxidant-rich”, “whole grain”, “organic” and so on into buying more packaged food? Be cautious, as these may actually lead you to put on extra kilos. “That false sense of health as well as a failure to understand the information presented in nutrition facts panels on packaged food may be contributing to the obesity epidemic worldwide including the US,” new research says. “Food marketers are exploiting consumer desires to be healthy by marketing products as nutritious when, in fact, they are not,” cautioned Temple Northup, assistant professor from the Jack J. Valenti school of communication at University of Houston (UH). The study examined the degree to which consumers link marketing terms on food packaging with good health. It found that consumers tend to view food products labelled with health-related

ere’s good news for American parents. A youth survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that lesser numbers of high school students are reporting sexual intercourse, smoking or fighting episodes compared to earlier findings. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in 2013, 46.8 percent of teenagers in grades nine to 12 have had sexual intercourse — unchanged since 2001. In the 1990s, the same survey found 54 percent teenagers were involved in sexual intercourse. Cigarette smoking among high school students has dropped to 15.7 percent, the lowest in 22 years. Nearly 25 percent of students said they have been involved in a ‘It is encouraging physical fight in the that high school past year — down students are from 42 percent making better reported in 1991, the findings revealed. health choices Students in grades such as not 9-12 were questioned smoking and not about alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug usage, having sex’ sexual activity, violence, dietary and exercise behaviors and suicide-related behaviors. “It is encouraging that high school students are making better health choices such as not fighting, not smoking and not having sex,” said Thomas Frieden, director of CDC. However, obesity and overweight remained a problem. About a third to 47 percent of teenagers are struggling with their weight, the survey found.

Words like organic, antioxidant, natural and gluten-free imply some sort of healthy benefit.“When people stop to think about it, there is nothing healthy about antioxidant Cherry 7-Up — it is mostly filled with high fructose syrup or sugar. Obese kids at diabetes risk IANS, London
D
iseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure that people thought only a few years ago were common only among adults are now found affecting children too. And obese children are at a higher risk. For the study, researchers compared fat cell composition and biology in lean and obese children and adolescents. Obese kids are more vulnerable to these diseases as researchers have found that when children become obese, begin-
ning as early as age six, there was an increase in the number of adipose cells (fat cells). These were larger in size than the cells in the bodies of lean children. “Obese children start to have not only more but also larger fat cells at a very young age. This is associated with increased inflammation and linked to impaired metabolic function,” said Antje Korner, a professor at University Children’s Hospital at Leipzig in Germany. The researchers also found evidence of dysfunction of the fat cells in obese children which can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes and other problems such as high blood pressure.
Your week ahead... Aries The first day of the week will be enthusiastic, spontaneous and adventurous. Tuesday and Wednesday, barely noticing how boring they are. Thursday, the pace picks up again. Friday might be sacrificing. Weekend will be exciting with family.
Taurus You have an itch to buy something, but rushing out at the start of the week and plunking down cash on the first thing that catches your eye will lead to regret. You’ve been here before. Try to take your time this week

Digital addiction a psychiatric disorder: Experts

Grand-finale riddle Is it too much risk giving new comers a chance to close a fashion show? Or is a grand finale not about fashion in the first place? NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI
W
ho is a grand-finale designer? Biggies mostly bag the opportunity. Why is it so? Experts opine that final shows are more about Bollywood presence and, therefore, celebrated names are roped in for the glamour clamor. Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) and Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) are major events of the Indian fashion industry, estimated to be worth about $120 million. Young names like Kallol Datta and designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi were picked up for LFW winter-festive 2012’s grand finale, but established designers mostly bring the curtain down at these two prestigious events. Continuing the trend, B-town favorite Manish Malhotra has been named the grand finale designer for the forthcoming edition of LFW Winter/Festive 2014. This is not the first time he has been chosen as a closing designer for a show. Why can’t new talent get the honor? Internationally-acclaimed designer Falguni Peacock, who works with her husband Shane, says such decisions are taken because the events are “sponsored shows purely for fashion week hype and value for the sponsor”. “They rope in Bollywood actors for media coverage, which is why season after season fashion weeks are losing their main essence,” Falguni, whose clientele includes international icons such as Latino star Jennifer Lopez and pop icon Lady Gaga, told IANS in an email interview from Mumbai. Shane added that fashion weeks today are purely for “entertainment”. There are designers who’re known to
rope in Bollywood celebrities as showstoppers or as guests adding glamour to front row seats. Some of the regulars are Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Arjun Rampal, Karan Johar and Sonam Kapoor. In a situation where many allege that seniors overshadow budding talents, Malhotra’s name didn’t excite his colleagues, including National Award winning designer Wendell Rodricks, who feels “ideally, a fashion week finale designer should be someone known for creativity.” But he clarified that he has nothing personal against Malhotra. “What I am alarmed about is this musical chairs at LFW between him (Malhotra), Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) and a FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) designer. It goes around in a circle for opening off site and finale. This in turn sets a bad precedent Actor Sonam Kapoor at the Rohit Bal show at the Aamby of politics, which other Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2013 in New Delhi. designers detest,” Rodricks told IANS. LONDON: Do you often drive back home on your own at dangerous speed after a bout of drinking? You must be drinking alone most of the time. According to a new study, those who drink alone are more prone to risky behavior than those who drink moderately in a group. “Social interaction in groups can reduce the tendency of individual drinkers to accept risks,” said psychologist Tim Hopthrow from University of Kent in Britain in a study. “Alcohol consumers accepted more risk when deciding alone but the least risk when deciding as a group,” he added. “We think that this is because drinkers in groups monitor one another closely, becoming more cautious when directly asked whether to take a risk,” Hopthrow said. The study involved 101 participants aged between 18 -30 who were in groups. The researchers compared groups of people who were just under the drunk-driving limit with groups that had not consumed any alcohol. “We know that individuals are more likely to engage in risky behavior when they are intoxicated, whether it be having unprotected sex, or engaging in violent or other criminal activity,” Rose Meleady from University of East Anglia in Britain noted. “This research demonstrates that drinking as part of a social group may mitigate the effects of alcohol consumption on risk-taking,” Meleady concluded in the study published in the journal Addiction.
Make-up melt-proof tricks you ought to try IANS, LOS ANGELES
H
ot and sweaty season is often frowned upon and is called as the make-up meltdown time of year. But it doesn’t have to be. Get your hands on the right tools. Here are a few tips from Hollywood’s make-up artists, reports eonline.com: Use eye pencil: Actress Amy Adams’ make-up artist Stephen Sollitto suggests skipping eyeshadow altogether in the summer time. So shun creams, pots and powders. Instead use waterproof pencils and shade in your whole lid. Find a multi-purpose product: Instead of layering onto your complexion, find a power foundation that has built-in SPF and is waterproof, says Sollitto. Actress Jennifer Garner’s make-up artist Fiona Stiles says if you must add hydration to your complexion, “skip moisturizer. Just use sunscreen”. Primer for eyes: Stiles thinks using a face primer is “an unnecessary step”. If you do want to use eyeshadow she suggests first swiping on eye primer to prevent creases.
