Bollywood's much-loved couple Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, after two days of wedding ceremonies in the far and dreamy Lake Como setting in Italy, unveiled their first look as a married couple to the public on November 15, immensely pleasing their army of fans. Both Deepika and Ranveer shared two images — one each from their four-hour-long ceremony according to Konkani traditions on November 14 and a North Indian style nuptial on November 15. In one picture, the two are laughing away, sharing a jovial moment during the Konkani wedding, and in another photograph from the celebration they are all ears for each other. Deepika looks resplendent on both occasions dressed in ensembles rooted in tradition as she chose red and gold as her primary colors. Ranveer wore pristine white for the first ceremony, and was color co-ordinated with Deepika for Day 2. In a matter of 10 minutes of sharing the first pictures at around 8 p.m. India time on Instagram,

f Macaulay Culkin was a little girl who was a far better actor than he, and if Home Alone was a tragic terrifying nervewracking exposition on a 2-year child left all alone in a house filled with electric gadgets and dangerous inclines and a dead parent, this is the film you would get. Let’s be thankful for the new wave in Hindi cinema that has gripped the Bollywood script in 2018 like an obstinate fever. Pihu pushes the envelope so far you can’t see the stamp of any other film on it. On seeing the trailer I had compared Pihu to Chetan Anand’s Aakhri Khat. And to a large extent that parallel remains pertinent. To simply watch a child fending for herself is the most heartbreaking ode to vulnerability on this side of Sadma. As Pihu prances, giggles, groans and finally weeps her way through the nightmarish emptiness of her well-appointed home, I kept wondering how the director would hold our attention for a fulllength feature film with just a 2year protagonist on screen... Or for that matter, how will he get the 2year child to go through the motions of an imminent catastrophic crisis?

This is just more grandstanding from CNN, and we will vigorously defend against this lawsuit,” said White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared in a statement, Efe reported. The cable news service this week filed its suit in a District of Columbia court against the president and five members of his staff over the decision to permanently ban CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta from the presidential residence. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer Jeff Lee said the domestic violence report was taken this week in West Los Angeles and the arrest was made on November 14 evening, reports CNN. “We can confirm that today LAPD Detectives arrested Michael Avenatti on suspicion of domestic violence. This is an ongoing investigation and we will provide more details as they become available,” the Department confirmed in a tweet.

‘US at risk of losing war with Russia, China’ WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump’s new National Defense Strategy is insufficiently resourced and Washington runs the risk of a military defeat by China or Russia, according to a report by a congressionally mandated panel of bipartisan experts. If left unchallenged, the actions of the White House would create a dangerous chilling effect for any journalist who covers our elected officials,” CNN said. The White House answered back, saying that the administration “can-

If there is no check on this type of behavior it impedes the ability of the President, the White House staff, and members of the media to conduct business,” the White House added. After the press conference, a member of the Secret Service approached Acosta and demanded that he turn in his press pass, according to a video recording of the incident posted by the journalist on Twitter.

he Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on four petitions seeking a court-monitored probe into 36 Rafale fighter jet deal with French firm Dassault Aviation even as the government admitted that there was no sovereign guarantee by the French government backing the deal. On pricing, the court asked Attorney General K.K. Venugopal not to respond to the contentions raised by the petitioners until the court decides to look into it. “The discussion on pricing will come only if we decide... so long that is not there,” the bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph told the AG. The AG also opposed the judicial review of the Rafale deal. He said that if the cost of weapon-

BRIEFS Separatist leader Andrabi in trouble NEW DELHI: The NIA on Wednesday filed chargesheet against Aasiya Andrabi — chief of the banned Dukhtaran-e-Millat, a separatist organization, and her associates Sofi Fehmeeda and Naheeda Nasreen accusing them of waging war against the state and delivering hate speeches in Jammu and Kashmir. The chargesheet accused Andrabi and her associates of using various media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, TV channels including channels in Pakistan to spread insurrectionary imputations and hateful messages and speeches against India.

Alert in Punjab after terrorists ‘sneak in’ CHANDIGARH: The counter intelligence wing of Punjab Police on Thursday put the state on high alert about the presence of at least halfa-dozen terrorists belonging to Pakistan-based group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in the state and said they could be moving towards the national capital. The reports suggest that the terrorists entered India from the international border in Ferozepur area. A letter issued by the Counter Intelligence Inspector General said: “At least six to seven terrorists are reportedly in Punjab (possibly Ferozepur area) and planning to move towards Delhi from Punjab side.”

ry and avionics comes in public domain, it will be used by the adversaries to make out the weaponry fitted in Rafale. A three-hour-long hearing saw Attorney General K.K. Venugopal

telling the bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice K.M. Joseph that “though there is no sovereign guarantee from France (government), there is a letter of comfort.”

NEW DELHI: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioning if the pact to buy 36 Rafale jets from France was at all a government-to-government deal. “The latest skeleton to tumble out of the Rafale cupboard: No guarantee by the French government backing the deal. “But, our Prime Minister says there’s a letter from the French promising to be faithful!,” Gandhi tweeted, adding “#BikGayaChowkidar” (watchman sold out). Gandhi’s latest jibe at Modi comes a day after the Centre told the Supreme Court that there was no sovereign guarantee by the French government backing the deal but only a letter of comfort.

The hearing saw counsel Prashant Bhushan and former Union Minister Arun Shourie questioning the circumventing of the procedure for aborting the process for procuring 126 aircraft (18 in a flyaway condition and 108 to be manufactured by HAL) in favor of procuring 36 jets in a ready-to-fly condition and unloading HAL as an offset partner. The petitions included one by Prashant Bhushan, Arun Shourie and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, and others by advocate M.L. Sharma, Vineet Dhanda and AAP MP Sanjay Singh. All of them have broadly assailed the pricing and the induction of an offset partner replacing HAL. Defending the deal on the grounds of “urgent requirement” of national security, the Attorney General justified the scrapping of the earlier deal for 126 aircraft as it was taking a long time in reaching a conclusion.

76% vote in Chhattisgarh phase-I elections A IANS, NEW DELHI

total of 76.28 per cent of the voters cast their votes in the first phase of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections, the Election Commission said on Tuesday. The final figure is slightly higher than the 2013 assembly elections in the first phase that stood at 75.93 per cent, the EC said. Elections in the 18 assembly constituencies across Maoist-infested districts of the state was done on Monday amid tight security. On Monday, at the time of the media briefing by EC officials the percentage stood at around 70 per cent but officials had said it was likely to go up as the data was being collated at that time.

People came out to exercise their right to vote in large numbers, battling several odds such as difficult terrain and threats from the red rebels. The constituencies which

went to the elections on Monday were Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, Konta, Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal, Kondagaon, Khairagarh,

Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Bastar, Jagdalpur and Chitrakot. Elections in 10 constituencies — Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur, Konta, Mohla-Manpur, Antagarh, Bhanupratappur, Kanker, Keshkal and Kondagaon — started at 7 a.m. and ended at 3 p.m. Voting at Khairagarh, Dongargarh, Rajnandgaon, Dongargaon, Khujji, Bastar, Jagdalpur and Chitrakot started an hour later and ended at 5 p.m. The Maoists, who had warned citizens against taking part in the election process, detonated an Improvised Explosive Device in Katekalyan in Dantewada district, minutes before the voting began, narrowly missing a foot patrol of the Central Reserve Police Force.

How China fought air pollution As north Indian cities choke amid worsening air conditions and half-hearted government measures, neighboring China is slowly winning the war against air pollution GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

W

hile New Delhi and other Indian cities choke amid worsening air conditions and half-hearted government measures, neighboring China -- the world’s largest polluter -- is slowly winning its war against pollution. Over a dozen Indian cities today are where their Chinese counterparts used to be some five years ago. Until 2009, 16 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities were in China. This year, the first 14, including New Delhi, are in India, and only the last four -- minus Beijing -- are in China. China is notorious for pollution and it’s not just an offshoot of four decades of furious industrialization. The problem stretches back centuries when dynastic leaders ignored the environmental costs of development. China had no environmental institution until 1972, six years after which the country went into an almost four-decade-long economic frenzy that saw smoke-billowing factories sprout across its landscape. The government woke up to the problem only in late 2013 when a severe smog descended on Beijing - dubbed “airpocalypse” — and an eight-year-old girl in Jiangsu province was diagnosed with lung cancer attributed to air pollution, making her the youngest cancer

patient in the country. This triggered a huge public outcry and, surprisingly, the stateowned media joined the chorus. “That was a watershed moment. People were angry. It was then that the government decided to monitor PM (particulate matter) 2.5 in 74 cities and make the data public,” Ma Jun, Director at the Institute of Public Environmental Affairs, a Chinese NGO, told IANS. The stability-obsessed Chinese

government also realised that merely disseminating data was not enough and announced an ambitious plan to wage a “war on pollution”. Green activists say although China has a long way to go to curb pollution, its efforts have begun to pay off. The Chinese Environment Ministry said in September that over half of some 650 cities saw air quality improve year-on-year. Now the skies over Beijing are blue -- and on some days exceptionally clean.

“Political will and ambitious targets set by the government in 2013 have delivered very impressive gains, but the level of determination going forward needs to be reaffirmed,” Lauri Myllyvirta, senior global campaigner, coal and air pollution, Greenpeace, told IANS. “Of course, things could still change this year if the first month or two of the winter period show negative progress,” he added. China is the world’s largest coal

producer and burns half of it itself, causing severe air pollution. But over the years, China has shut many coal-fired power plants and shifted to natural gas heating. This leaves many homes outside Beijing and other provinces extremely cold in winter but reduces smog. In a bolder decision this October, the Chinese government said it will switch another 1.18 million residential households in the country to natural gas heating this winter. “If you look at Beijing, the capital’s coal consumption has dropped from 22 million tonnes in 2012 to five million tonnes this year,” said Ma. “Beijing’s 2.5 PM has dropped from 90 to 58 in 2018.” The Chinese standard for PM 2.5 is 35. China has also cracked down heavily on polluting factories, shutting tens of thousands of them. It has a “green police” which has the power to send its inspection teams to any part of the country, a privilege enjoyed only by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. In 2017, 18,000 companies for were punished for pollution and fines worth $125 million were levied. The green police also has the power to sack officials for being lax in controlling pollution. Last year, 12,000 officials were disciplined. Setting off crackers is completely banned in 444 cities, including Beijing.

Towels, bedsheets gone from AC coaches! Over 21 lakh towels, bedsheets, blankets and other items went missing from air-conditioned coaches during 2017-18 ARUN KUMAR DAS, NEW DELHI

A

ffluent AC passengers are the prime suspects as over 21 lakh towels, bedsheets, blankets and other items went missing from air-conditioned coaches during 2017-18 an official said. The passengers are suspected to have made off with precisely 21,72,246 “bedroll items” -including 12,83,415 hand towels, 4,71,077 bedsheets and 3,14,952 pillow covers -- from trains across the country in the last fiscal. Besides, the Railways found 56,287 pillows and 46,515 blankets missing from the AC coaches in this period. “Together, the missing items are estimated to cost over Rs 14 crore,”

a senior Railway Ministry official told IANS. While the theft of toilet mugs, taps, flush pipes and mirrors are also reported on a regular basis, the missing bedroll items in substantial numbers has posed a challenge for the Railways, which is trying to provide better amenities to upper class passengers. Currently, about 3.9 lakh sets of linen are provided daily -- this comprises two bedsheets, a towel, a pillow and a blanket for each passenger in the AC classes. “The maximum number of items stolen are towels, followed by bedsheets, as reported by coach attendants at the end of each journey,” the official said. In the light of the thefts, especially of towels, the Railways has decid-

ed that the face towels given to passengers traveling in air-conditioned coaches will be replaced with cheaper, smaller, disposable, takeaway napkins, said the official. The Railways has already started changing the cover of blankets in some sections while the frequency of washing is being increased from monthly to fortnightly and weekly. There is also a move to increase

the frequency of washing of blankets to begin with and replacing the existing ones with the newly designed lightweight blankets made of soft fabric in a phased manner. The plan envisages improvement of linen management with the aim of providing clean, hygienic and good quality linen to passengers traveling in AC classes, the official said.

Among the 16 zones of Indian Railways, the Southern zone alone accounted for the theft of 2,04,113 hand towels, 29,573 bedsheets, 44,868 pillow covers, 3,713 pillows and 2,745 blankets. In the missing list, South Central zone has registered 95,700 towels, 29,747 pillow covers, 22,323 bedsheets, 3,352 blankets and 2,463 pillows.

TRUMP’S TWEET SPOILS DIWALI After celebrating festival of lights, the US President Trump missed wishing Hindus in a tweet, starting a raging storm over social media; Trump later corrected the omission ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S President Donald Trump’s tweet calling Diwali a “holiday observed by Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains” have started a raging twitter storm over his apparent omission of Hindus, the members of the first and largest religion to observe it. However, in another tweet though, he said: “It was my great honor to host a celebration of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, in the Roosevelt Room at the @WhiteHouse this afternoon. Very, very special people!” He also started his speech at the White House Diwali celebrations this week in the same way with a mention of Hinduism. The problem apparently arose as his tweets based on his prepared speech were out of sequence and also because the first tweet was deleted and reposted. After telling people assembled for the celebration, they were a “very impressive group; now I know you are very important, very impressive”, Trump read out from his prepared text: “I am thrilled to be here for the celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights and I am honored to host this beautiful ceremony at

Pregnant NRI woman killed in Britain LONDON: An eight-month pregnant Indian-origin woman was killed with a crossbow by a man believed to be her former partner at her home in east London. Sana Muhammad, also known as Devi Unmathallegadoo, was shot in the abdomen during the confrontation at her home in Ilford this week. Doctors performed an emergency surgery to save her unborn infant boy, who was in a stable condition, the police said. Muhammad, 35, however, died from her injuries, the Evening Standard reported. Suspect Ramanodge Unmathallegadoo, 50, believed to be the victim's former partner, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with murder on November 13 and was due to appear at the Old Bailey on November 15, the Guardian said. The victim changed her name to Sana Muhammad after she married Imtiaz Muhammad about seven years ago. She had three children from her previous relationship, two girls with her second husband and was eight months pregnant with her sixth child at the time of her death. —IANS

NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump has complimented Indian trade negotiators as “the best” and said trade talks between the two countries were moving along. “We are trying very hard to make better trade deals with India,” he said during a White House Diwali celebration. Showing the trade negotiators as highly skilled and making the talks sound difficult for the Americans, he said, “They are very good traders, they are very good negotiators.” And turning to India’s Ambassador Navtej Sarna, he said, “You would say (that), right?”

second tweet mentioning Hinduism appeared. His first tweet was from the second part of the Diwali speech that set off the trolls. A poster call Jeff Young shot off a tweet, “Hey, whoever wrestled Trump’s phone away to post this: Pretty sure Hindus also have some interest in Diwali.”

They are “the best,” and “so we are working and it is moving along,” he added. The annual celebration was held a week later because Diwali fell on the day after the mid-term elections when the results were still coming in. He repeatedly spoke of his close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, “We love your country. And I have great, great respect, as you know, for your Prime Minister Modi.” And he told Sarna, “So please give him my warmest regards. We will be talking to him soon. —IANS

Another, Tom Phillips, tweeted, “Trump’s Twitter account posted a Diwali tweet that didn’t mention Hindus, then deleted it, then... reposted it again with a different link but still no Hindus?” And so it went on tweet after tweet, with media like Time magazine and HuffPost also piling on.

Neomi Rao nominated for senior judgeship ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S President Donald Trump has announced that he is nominating an IndianAmerican woman, Neomi Rao, to the senior judgeship that was vacated by Brett Kavanaugh when he was elevated to the Supreme Court. Flanked by a phalanx of about 20 top Indian-American officials in his administration, Trump said at the annual White House Diwali celebrations this week that Rao was his pick for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals judgeship. She is a “great person” who “is going to be fantastic”, he said. Considered the most important court below the Supreme Court, serving on it is considered to open a path to the nation’s top court as four of the nine current justices had risen from its bench. Of the 13 courts of appeal, the one in the District of Columbia is regarded as the most important as it is based in the nation’s capital and weighty federal litigation ends up before it. Another Indian-American, Sri Srinivasan, who was on former Pres-

Indian-American Neomi Rao (Photo: IANS)

ident Barack Obama’s shortlist for the Supreme Court, is also on the DC court of appeals. Trump said that Rao’s announcement was scheduled for November 11, but that he decided to do it a day early because the celebration was an appropriate venue. A conservative former law professor, Rao, 45, heads the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs

in the President’s executive office which reviews government regulations and oversees collection of information by government and privacy policy. The Senate will have to approve her appointment. As a woman and a minority, her appointment carries a lot of symbolism after the messy elevation of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

after at least two women accused him of sex abuse. Although the Senate approved his appointment to the Supreme Court with a vote mostly along party lines, Trump faced strong criticism for nominating him and protests were held around the nation because of the allegations. During the approval process, the Senate heard graphic testimony from a woman who said that he had abused her while they were high school students more than 35 years ago. For Trump, who has been accused of being personally abusive towards women and of insensitivity to them and to minorities, Rao’s nomination could ensure smoother sailing for his nominee in the Senate, although as a conservative she will face an ideological inquisition at the hands of the Democrats. Rao comes from a Parsi family and her parents, both doctors, immigrated from India. A graduate of Yale University, she received her law degree from Chicago University and went on to be a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Trump-Putin meet ‘unlikely’ The US President is likely to meet Kim Jong-un ‘early next year’

Pompeo to meet top N.Korean official

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has said he will have lunch with Russian President Vladimir Putin among other leaders during his planned trip to Paris but no meeting was expected. Trump also revealed that he is likely to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “early next year”. “We will be having a lunch, but I’m sure many people will be there,” said Trump on Wednesday at a press conference at the White House when asked if he will meet Putin in Paris, where over 60 leaders were expected to convene on Sunday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the World War I, Xinhua reported. “I don’t think we have anything scheduled in Paris,” said Trump, explaining that he didn’t think there would be time set for any meeting given his short stay there. “We will very shortly meet again at the G20. And that’s where we were actually looking forward to meet,” Trump added. The Kremlin announced earlier on Wednesday that Putin and Trump will meet at a short working lunch in the Elysee Palace, with longer and more comprehensive talks expected at a summit of the Group of 20 countries at the end of this month in Argentina.

TOKYO: US Vice President Mike Pence is set to visit Japan next week and discuss issues related to North Korea with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, it was announced here on Thursday. Pence will stop in Japan on his way to Singapore, where he will participate in a summit of the Associa-

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to New York on Thursday to meet a top North Korean official, the State Department has announced. Pompeo and North Korean general Kim Yong-chol, “will discuss making progress on all four pillars of the Singapore Summit joint statement, including achieving the final, fully verified denuclearization of (North Korea)”, State Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said on Monday. Pompeo, who will be accompanied by US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun, on Sunday played down North Korea’s recent threat to resume its nuclear programme if Washington does not make concessions in the bilateral dialogue between the two nations, reports Efe news.

Trump said that he expected to meet Kim Jong-un again “some time early next year,” but insisted that the US is “in no rush” after talks between his top diplomat and a senior North Korean envoy were postponed. “We think it’s going fine. We are

in no rush,” said Trump, commenting on current bilateral negotiations. Trump’s remarks came less than a day after the US State Department announced that a scheduled high-level meeting between the two sides has been postponed.

The expected Thursday meeting in New York between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) Central Committee, “will now take place at a later date,” Heather Nauert, the department spokesper-

16 Talibans killed in Afghanistan KABUL: Afghan forces killed 16 Taliban militants and injured 19 others while evicting them from several villages in Dand-e-Ghori area in Baghlan province, police said Thursday. “The security forces have recaptured several villages including the main base of Taliban rebels over the past four days,” police chief Ekramudin Sari told Xinhua news agency.

Dand-e-Ghori was captured by Taliban two years ago and since then has been regarded as a Taliban stronghold in the northern Baghlan province. The ongoing operations against the Taliban in Dand-e-Ghori would last until the area was cleansed of the insurgents, Sari said. Taliban militants were yet to comment on the development.

Asia Bibi still in Pakistan: Government ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Christian woman Asia Bibi, who was released from prison a day earlier after being acquitted of blasphemy charges, has not fled the country, the government said on Thursday. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mohammad Faisal said that Bibi was still in Pakistan, denying rumors that she had already left after the furore caused by her release on Wednesday night from a prison in Multan, where she spent eight years on death row. Bibi, a mother-of-five, was convicted in 2010 of insulting the Prophet

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Muhammad during a row with neighbors. Earlier reports said that she left the prison on Wednesday night and was flown to an “unknown destination”. Faisal did not provide more details about the woman, whose acquittal on October 31 triggered widespread protests led by the hardline Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). “There is no truth in reports of her leaving the country -- it is fake news,” Faisal told Dawn NewsTV. —IANS

The objective of the meeting would be to prepare for a second summit between the leaders of both countries, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un, to resume Pyongyang’s denuclearization talks that began during the historic June meeting in Singapore. Trump has expressed his willingness to schedule the second summit soon, but his National Security Adviser John Bolton, recently pointed out that the meeting could be delayed to the beginning of 2019, which would delay the dialogue process. Pompeo visited Pyongyang a month ago to prepare for that summit and met Kim Jong-un, but gave no sign that the meeting had produced great progress towards a second meeting of the leaders. —IANS

India escapes US sanctions on Iran oil ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

U

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Monday that Washington was exempting India from the sanctions on importing oil from Iran. He said the US will continue to negotiate with India and the seven other countries receiving the sixmonth exemption to get them to cut their Iranian imports to zero. The other countries receiving the exemptions Pompeo announced at a news conference with foreign correspondents in Washington were China, Greece, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said that his department was imposing sanctions on 700 individuals, entities, aircraft and ships. In July, US President Donald Trump announced he was pulling out of the nuclear deal signed in 2015 by the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, Germany and the

European Union with Iran to end its nuclear weapons programme. Trump said the sanctions that had been lifted after the agreement would be reimposed and the oil trade would be targeted starting Monday. Pompeo said that an important reason for the reimposition of the sanctions was Iran’s promotion of terrorism and that it was aimed at curbing its “revolutionary” policies. Pompeo said the payments made

by the oil importers under the exemptions would be put in a special account from which Iran could only make payments for purchases for humanitarian programmes. India imported from Iran nearly 10 per cent of the total of 220 million metric tonnes of crude oil it imported during 2017-18. Since the reimposition of sanctions were announced, India has been cutting back on the Iranian imports.

Challenges galore in Sabarimala An all-party meeting called by Kerala Chief Minister to discuss the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season fails to end the deadlock SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

I

t could well be the first time in the history of the Lord Ayyappa Sabarimala temple that the nearly-two-monthlong festival season is opening amidst such grave uncertainty. The festival season, which opens on the evening of Friday, November 16, for the Mandala Mahotsavam, will run till January 20, 2019, when the doors are finally closed. There is, in between, a three-day break from December 27. The uncertainty has been caused by the September 28 verdict of the Supreme Court which lifted the temple’s traditional ban on the entry of women between the ages of 10 and 50 -- who, it is believed, disturb the temple’s celibate deity. It was a decision that was hailed by liberals and women’s activists, but caused disquiet among devotees. After the verdict, the ruling Communnist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M)-led Left Front government in Kerala announced it will

implement the apex court’s ruling, pitting it directly against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and numerous Hindu groups which have been up in arms against the verdict.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has also taken the position that the age-old traditions and customs of the famed shrine should not be diluted. Besides, members of the Pan-

dalam Royal family, that has an emotional connect with Sabarimala and are the official custodians of the temple’s jewellery, have also have come out against the Supreme Court ruling on the

grounds that the temple’s unique traditions must be respected and observed. Meanwhile, an all-party meeting called by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday to discuss the upcoming Sabarimala pilgrimage season ended with the Congress-led UDF and the BJP walking out. The opposition then accused Vijayan of sticking to his original stand that the state government would abide by the apex court directive. The all-party meeting was called soon after the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to stay its September 28 verdict which allowed all females, including those in the hitherto banned age group of 1050, to pray at the temple. The meeting ended after when the United Democratic Front and the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders announced that they have no other option but to walk out when Vijayan insisted that his government has to abide by the apex court ruling.

Telangana elections: TJS Communication satellite now in orbit to contest for 12 seats HYDERABAD: In another jolt to the ‘Mahakutami’ (Grand Alliance) of opposition parties in Telangana, Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) this week announced that it will contest in 12 constituencies in the next month’s assembly elections. Even before the constituents could reach a formal agreement over seat sharing, the fledgling TJS announced the list of constituencies where it plans to field its candidates. TJS Vice President P.L. Vishweshwar Rao told reporters that TJS will contest for the seats of Dubbaka, Medak, Malkajgiri, Amberpet, Siddipet, Warangal East, Vardhannapeta, Asifabad, Station Ghanpur, Jangaon, Mahabubnagar and Miryalguda. Stating that TJS is contesting only in those constituencies where it is strong, Rao said discussion could continue on seat sharing. Elections to the 119-member Assembly are scheduled to be held on December 7. The last date for filing of nominations is November 19. The Congress party, which is heading the alliance, has already announced that it will contest 95 seats, leaving 24 for other constituents - Telugu Desam Party (TDP), TJS and Communist Party of India (CPI). They stated that TDP

has been allotted 14 seats while 10 will be shared by TJS and CPI. However, TJS leader M. Kodandaram, who met Congress President Rahul Gandhi on November 2, had demanded 17 seats. CPI has also announced candidates for 9 seats, blaming inordinate delay in seat sharing for its unilateral decision. Congress has so far announced 75 candidates while TDP has declared its candidates for nine constituencies. —IANS

ndia successfully launched its latest communication satellite GSAT-29 with its heaviest rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLVMk III) on November 14 in a copybook style. The GSLV-Mk III rocket on its second developmental flight slung the 3,423 kg GSAT-29 satellite in a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) from where it would be taken up to its final geostationary orbit. Precisely at 5.08 p.m. the GSLVMk III rocket with a strong deep growl rose into the sky breaking free from the second launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The 43.4-metre tall rocket weighing about 640 tonnes furiously rushed to the skies with a thick orange flame at its rear carrying the GSAT-29. The GSLV-Mk III with a capacity to carry four-tonne satellite, is a three stage/engine rocket with two strap-on motors powered by solid fuel. The second stage is a core liquid fuel booster and the third is the cryogenic engine. Just over 16 minutes into its flight, the rocket put into orbit the GSAT-29 satellite. Speaking about the mission, Indi-

India’s heaviest rocket GSLV-Mk III blasted off from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh. (Photo: IANS)

an Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chairman K. Sivan said: “The second successful mission of GSLV-Mk III marks the entry of the rocket into operational phase after completing the developmental phase. This mission is important regarding GSLV-Mk III and GSAT satellite series.” The Indian space agency had flown a similar rocket on June 5, 2017 with GSAT-19 satellite. Prior to that ISRO had flown another rocket with 3.7 tonne dummy payload in 2014 to test its in-flight structural stability and aerodynamics. According to ISRO, GSAT-29 with a life span of 10 years is a multi-beam satellite that carries

Ka/Ku-band high throughput communication transponders intended to meet the communication requirements of users, including those in remote areas. In addition, several new technologies such as Q/V-band payload, data transmission through optical communication link will be demonstrated. This will help in realising future advanced satellites, ISRO said. The satellite also carries geo-high resolution camera. India currently has two operational rockets — the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle and GSLV-Mk II — with a lift-off mass of 415 tonnes and a carrying capacity of 2.5 tonnes.

Kohli, Shastri should hold their horses India start the tour of Australia with a three-match T20 series and that leaves them with barely 10 days before the first Test at the Gabba VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI

‘No Smith, Warner good for India’

F

ew India captains have been as articulate as Virat Kohli and fewer still as provocative. He will defend his team at the worst of times and he can also be outlandish like when he told off a fan to leave India and watch England or Australian batsmen if he liked them so much. Kohli and his favorite coach, Ravi Shastri, are, somehow, unable to deal with the media without flying off the handle, particularly when things get skewed and they are reminded of their own statements. When there is no cricket on, there are more boardroom stories. In the long gap between the second and third Twenty20 games against the West Indies both Kohli and the Committee of Administrators (CoA) did not waste the period. Kohli, who has been rested for the T20 series, went a little too far by asking the fan to leave the country if he liked overseas players. His remark on his promotional video boomeranged with twitterati going after him, taking exception to his mindless reaction. He was quick to assuage the feelings of the fans by asking them chill out, making the remark sound like a mere wisecrack. He will surely be more thoughtful and careful in reacting. Someone in the board gave the media the graphic details of the twomember CoA meeting with Kohli¸ Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma during the Hyderabad ODI. It was clear that the idea was to tell the world that the administrators have given everything the players asked for and so their performance should be commensurate with their demands. Kohli has another demand, keeping the fast bowlers going to the World Cup off the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the board compensating them. He doesn’t mind batsmen playing, though they are as vulnerable in getting injured, if not tired like the bowlers. What about the franchises, will they accept India captain’s request? Ideally all should play the first half of the IPL and keep off the last few games. The administrators also gave Shastri a rap on his knuckles, telling him to hold his tongue, leaving it to the people to judge whether the current team is the best traveling in the last 15 years, instead of him going round saying how well it compares with the teams of the past. Shastri apparently clarified that he made the statement in the face of “our own media putting the team down”. There are many critics of Kohli-

Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri address a press conference before leaving for Australia. (Photo: Bidesh Manna/IANS)

Chopping, changing over now, says Shastri MUMBAI: As India prepares for the challenging tour to Australia, that includes four Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is, head coach Ravi Shastri on Thursday said the time for “chopping and changing” in the ODI format is over and the team management will work on picking the top 15 for the ICC World Cup in England and Wales next year. “See Test cricket obviously is different, this is the last series we play before the World Cup. So the focus will be entirely on that series,” Shastri told at the pre-departure presser ahead of the tour Down Under.

Shastri team and yet interestingly some of them predict before a major tour that India have their best chance of beating the opponents, this time Australia, despite being proved wrong both in South Africa and England. The former players qualify their prophecy. If this Indian team can’t beat Australia with the kind of

“It is time to perform as a team and we are looking forward to the tour and then World Cup 2019. As far as oneday cricket goes, we will try and play the 15 that will go to the World Cup.” “Chopping, changing over now, grace period over. Now it is time to really get focussed, play as a unit and hopefully not have any injuries where we have to look elsewhere and take it from there,” he added. The head coach also cautioned players to pull up their socks and take ownership while seizing those “tough situations” by remaining mentally tough in a Test match.

Echoing this, skipper Virat Kohli stressed for maintaining consistency while also urging the individuals to take more responsibility. “We have made decent progress but there is still room for improvement. We understand what we need to work on. The whole combination has to come together to win the series and not just a Test match,” Kohli stressed. “We have a great bowling attack now. But the batsmen need to step up as well. Everyone’s really keen to correct those things and put in a complete performance,” Kohli added. —IANS

attack they have and looking at the brittle batting they are confronted with -- without Steve Smith and David Warner -- they will not get another opportunity like this to beat them. Sachin Tendulkar put it in perspective and, in the process seemed to be answering Kohli and Shastri: “If you see the Australia teams in the past and compare

them to this one, yes we have a very good chance,” adding “we have good fast bowlers, quality spinners and good batters.” Kohli had rightly pointed out in England that if the team has to start the series well, they can’t warm up into it, forgetting that he had said in South Africa that practice matches were a waste of time!

KOLKATA: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said the possible absence of Steve Smith and David Warner in the Australia team for the series against India would be a “huge factor” as it’s like India not having Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in their ranks. The Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) had made a submission to Cricket Australia at the start of the month to lift the ban on Australian captain Smith and vice-captain Warner. But indications are that they are not ready to bring the trio (Cameron Bancroft included) back to international cricket early. Therefore, there seems little hope they will play Test cricket before March 29 when the ban on them ends. “It’s a huge factor. This is like the Indian team not having Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli,” Ganguly told reporters. —IANS

India start the tour of Australia with a three-match T20 series and that leaves them with barely 10 days before the first Test at the Gabba. They straightaway went into Tests in South Africa and in England they finished the shorter formats first and now the circle is complete, Tests and ODIs following T20s.

Srikanth in Hong Kong Open quarters

‘Kohli lost control in making comment’

KOWLOON (HONG KONG): Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth defeated his compatriot H.S Prannoy in an all-Indian men’s singles clash to enter the quarterfinal of the Hong Kong open tournament here on Thursday. In a marathon match of an hour and seven minutes, the fourth seed Srikanth edged past Prannoy 18-21, 30-29, 21-18. After losing the first game, Srikanth bounced back in the second game in a hard-fought battle. The third game saw another intense battle between the two but Srikanth proved much better towards the end and wrapped up the issue. Other Indian Sameer Verma also advanced as he got a walkover from his fifth seed Chinese opponent Chen Long. In mixed doubles category, Satwik Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa crashed out of the meet losing to Lee Yang and Hsu of Chinese Taipei.

KOLKATA: Virat Kohli ‘lost control’ of himself while making the ‘leave India’ comment, feels legendary five-time former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand. “I think he lost control. He got a bit emotional and he just said the first thing that came to his mind,” Anand told IANS on the sidelines of Tata Steel Chess India 2018 meet held at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, here. Sounding not too pleased at the manner in which Kohli replied to a fan’s question in the video and drew immediate condemnation, Anand said the 30year old batsman would be the first to acknowledge that he also has fans abroad and they don’t have to leave their countries. “He must be the first to appreciate that he probably has foreign fans, and none of them have to leave their country and come to India (laughs),” Anand said. —IANS

Fighting fake news: Dorsey Twitter is taking ‘multi-variable’ steps, including the use of AI, to curb the spread of misleading information ahead of 2019 general elections in India, says its CEO IANS, NEW DELHI

A

dmitting that fighting fake news is no easy task, Twitter Co-Founder and CEO Jack Dorsey on Monday said the social network is taking “multi-variable” steps, including the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), to curb the spread of misleading information ahead of 2019 general elections in India. Addressing a town-hall meeting at the Indian Institute of TechnologyDelhi (IIT-Delhi), Dorsey said fake news is a way too big category. “The real problem is not misinformation per se as jokes can also be categorized as misinformation. But misinformation that is spread with the intent to mislead people is a real problem,” stressed the Twitter CEO who is in India for a week-long maiden visit. Dorsey, who got a rousing reception at IIT-Delhi with the students cheering the young entrepreneur with screams, likened solving the problem of misleading information to that of addressing a security issue, or building a lock.

IN BRIEF

‘Jobs would be very proud of Apple’ SAN FRANCISCO: Had Steve Jobs been alive he would have been very proud of Apple and its focus on putting people above technology, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has said. In an interview with CNBC this week, Wozniak said that every other phone company today is copying Apple. “I believe that he (Jobs) would be very happy with the company today as its concern more with end users and putting people above technology. Steve always acted that way,” he added.

Facebook blocks more accounts SAN FRANCISCO: The Facebook crackdown on accounts engaged in “coordinated inauthentic behavior” on its platform and on Instagram continues. “Combined with our takedown last Monday, we have removed 36 Facebook accounts, six Pages and 99 Instagram accounts for coordinated inauthentic behavior,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy, said in a blog post this week. —IANS

“No one can build a perfect lock, but we need to stay ahead of our attackers. AI could probably help,” Dorsey told the audience. Conversations, Dorsey said, can help solve a lot of problems and encouraged the youth to ask tough questions to their leaders. “You should ask your leaders what they are doing about solving global problems like climate

change or what they are doing about having universal basic income,” he told the audience. Responding to a question on “edit button” on Twitter, he said it has been under consideration for quite some time now, but they are yet to find a suitable way to roll out the feature for its over 326 million active users. The “edit button” would eventually allow people to

tweak the conversation. Responding to a question on fears of AI displacing jobs, Dorsey said it was not something waiting to happen. “AI is already displacing jobs. Programming will be done by AI and Machine Learning,” he said, adding that the important point for people is to consider what decisions people want algorithms to take and what decisions they want to take for themselves. Twitter India also launched a new initiative titled #PowerOf18 at the event, aimed at encouraging youth to contribute in public debates and participate in civic engagement for the upcoming election season. #PowerOf18 will encourage the youth to become change makers and “join the most important public conversation for the country -the state and national elections,” said Maya Hari, Vice-President and Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Twitter. Five Indian states — Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Mizoram — are currently facing polls.

ndia has been the target of over 4.3 lakh cyber attacks from five countries including China, Russia and the US while more than 73,000 attacks were initiated from India between January and June this year, says a Finnish cybersecurity company.

According to F-Secure's honeypot data, Russia, the US, China, the Netherlands and Germany targeted India with 436,090 attacks. This is nearly 12 times more than which originated from India. Honeypots are basically decoy servers that emulate the real IT environment of a business enterprise. Russia accounted for most cyber

attacks on India (255,589), followed by the US (103,458), China (42,544), the Netherlands (19,169) and 15,330 attacks from Germany. On the other hand, the top five

PM Modi ‘enjoys’ being on Twitter NEW DELHI: After meeting Twitter CEO and Co-Founder Jack Dorsey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he enjoys being on the platform and has made “great friends” there. Complimenting Dorsey for the passion with which he leads the company, Modi said that he was delighted to meet him. “I enjoy being on this medium, where I’ve made great friends and see everyday the creativity of people,” Modi, who has 44.4 million followers on Twitter, said in a tweet. Dorsey thanked the Prime Minister for his ideas on Twitter. “Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for having us today. I enjoyed our conversation about the importance of global conversation,” the Twitter CEO, who is on his maiden week-long India visit, tweeted. —IANS

countries that were targeted by Indian cyber attackers were Austria, the Netherlands, the UK, Japan, and Ukraine — a total of 36,563. F-Secure gave the break-up: Austria (12,540), the Netherlands (9,267), the UK (6,347), Japan (4,701) and 3,708 attacks targeted Ukraine's businesses. "The relatively higher number of inbound attacks on Indian honeypots reflects how the fast-digitizing country is becoming more lucrative for global cyber criminals," Leszek Tasiemski, Vice President of cyber security products R&D at F-Secure, said in a statement last week.

round 69 percent Pakistanis between the ages of 15 and 65 do not know what the Internet is, an information communication technology (ICT)-based survey has revealed. The survey was conducted by LirneAsia, a think-tank based in Sri Lanka that carries out ICT research, Dawn news reported this week. The report is based on a survey of 2,000 households in Pakistan. national level. Conducted between October-December 2017, this demand side survey helps under-

stand how users use or do not use ICT services. “The 152 million active cellular

subscribers mentioned on Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) website, despite a good SIM registration system, tell nothing about the subscribers — whether they are men and women, rich or poor and does not really help understand access and usage gaps,” LinreAsia CEO Helani Galpaya said in the report. According to the study, Internet awareness is a considerable problem across Asian countries, including Pakistan, where just 30 percent of the population in the age group of 15-65 is aware of the internet (they were asked if they use the ‘internet’ without explaining what it is).

he hide and seek is over.

Actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone during their wedding in Italy. (Photo: Twitter/@deepikapadukone)

they jointly garnered over 4 lakh 'likes'. Social media users were pining for a glimpse into the very private celebrations, which marked the culmination of a six year-long love story which began on the sets of the 2013 film Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. Unlike most celebrity weddings which keep fans engrossed with social media updates, the 'no pic-

tures, no phones, no drones policy' of the actors' grand destination wedding left the media and fans yearn for a glimpse of the couple or the celebrations. Amit, a cousin of Deepika, a daughter of badminton ace Prakash Padukone, said it has been a "magical week, steeped purely in love" for the family. "Fairytale union of the two most

kind, beautiful souls. Ranveer, welcome to the family! You've dethroned me as filmiest, but I'll cope. Deepika, never seen you happier; you deserve no less," Amit tweeted. That, apart from some long, wide angle shots and some hazy videos from the wedding celebrations, is all that people could get their eyes on.

The celebrations were as private as it could get. With a guest list of around 40, Deepika and Ranveer chose Northern Italy's Lombardy region, a resort area known for its spectacular scenery as the backdrop for their wedding. They were successful in hiding themselves from onlookers, using their umbrellas. Mobile phones were not allowed outside people's rooms and there were boats patrolling the lake for drones as part of the three-level security plan for the wedding. Fondly called as DeepVeer by their fans, the star couple has also worked together in Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat although they didn't share screen space in the latter.

‘Pihu’ most heartbreaking horror story Stan Lee believed comics are here to stay I

NEW DELHI: He might be gone, but the world he created with strokes of his imagination will live on forever. Stan Lee believed his universe of superheroes and super villains will keep on entertaining people around the globe, making his legacy eternal. In a rare interview to Indian media back in 2016, Stan Lee had opened up about changing with time, his fascination with Indian culture and the urge to keep on creating new characters. “I think there will always be people who prefer to read traditional comic books over watching the films,” Stan Lee had told IANS over email when asked about films having an edge over comic books among today’s youth. A legend in the comic book world who helped usher in a new era of superhero storytelling, Stan Lee died at the age of 95 on Monday in Los Angeles — making it hard for people to take in the sad news and pause to acknowledge his extraordinary contribution to the entertainment world. He was best known for co-creating Marvel’s beloved superheroes

like Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Daredevil, Black Panther and Doctor Strange. Despite focussing on creating a fantastical world, Lee was always ahead of the times, rooted in reality and accepting of change — which showed in his work and in his opinions. “It’s wonderful to see so many options out there with new digital platforms that can let anyone read comics or watch these characters anytime. “ —Sugandha Rawal

f Macaulay Culkin was a little girl who was a far better actor than he, and if Home Alone was a tragic terrifying nervewracking exposition on a 2-year child left all alone in a house filled with electric gadgets and dangerous inclines and a dead parent, this is the film you would get.

Film: Pihu; Director: Vinod Kapri; Cast: Myra, Prerna Sharma, voices of Rahul Bagga and Hrishita Bhatt; Rating: **** (4 stars)

On both counts I am happy to say Pihu scores high points. Not only are we unconditionally riveted to little Pihu’s instinctive survival methods (don’t think Culkin, think Tom Hanks in Castaway) the little wonder-actress is astonishingly clued in to the way the camera works. In no time we surrender to Pihu’s distressful circumstance while she remains oblivious to it. At times her expressions of exasperation at the mess that karma has suddenly dealt her, are so profound I felt I was watching a seasoned actress rather than a child who

doesn’t even know what the camera (or karma) is and yet Pihu, for all its disposition to overpower us with a one-character survival saga, is never short of breath. Director Vinod Kapri never runs out of ways to engage our senses in the most heightened state of emotional vulnerability. I can’t begin to imagine how Kapri directed the child. I suspect the child directed herself most of the time, mumbling cajoling coaxing and pleading baby-talk as her mother refuses to answer, breaking into a lisping song (Nani teri morni ko more le gayi will never be the same again), tiptoeing on her little feet to reach for her mother’s cellphone to tell her absentee Papa that Mama is sleeping. Oh, this is the most heartbreaking horror tale of domestic desolation you will ever see. That’s for sure. The jarring notes are provided by extraneous voice. —Subash K Jha

uperstar Shah Rukh Khan says that he cannot afford to get his interior decorator and producer wife Gauri Khan on board to design for films. “We make really small films. We can’t afford to get her on board for our films,” the actor said. His comments came after Gauri said: “Right now, I am very busy. My hands are full and whenever I will have time then, 100 percent I will do it.” The husband and wife were interacting with the media on Monday at the inauguration of “Sanchos” — a Mexican restaurant designed by Gauri. “I just go to whichever restaurant she opens because I get free meal, so it’s really good for me... I hope she keeps opening up new restaurants so that all of us can keep coming here to do parties,” said Shah Rukh.

ctress Rasika Dugal, who will be seen in an upcoming movie titled Hamid directed by Aijaz Khan, says working on the film has moved her deeply. Rasika will be seen playing a widow and a mother to a young boy. The film is set against the backdrop of Kashmir. “I was nervous that I will not be able to do justice to this part and to the story of the people of Kashmir who have been through and continue to go through so much. I felt that I will always be an outsider to that grief and I guess, in one sense, I will always be. But I tried to do all that I could to get as close to being a part of their lives,” Rasika said in a statement.

Diwali and Annkut celebrated at BAPS Chicago BY A STAFF WRITER ARTLETT, IL- This year, BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandirs across North America marked the auspicious festival of Diwali and its associated five days of celebrations with an elaborate Annakut, lighted divos, fireworks, and even a special children’s Diwali celebration. For many visitors, the most popular attraction and a highlight of the festivities is the Annakut festival on the fifth day. As practiced by BAPS Swaminarayan Mandirs, the Annakut is a unique and awe-inspiring sight of devotion where hundreds of different traditional Indian foods and even some fusions with western cuisine are prepared by devotees in the community and arranged in front of the Mandir’s sacred images. In the evening, the offered dishes are served at dinner to everyone. In addition to the Annakut, the BAPS’ Diwali celebrations featured spiritual and cultural themed events, which engaged both children and adults, in order to bring positive energy into the New Year. Furthermore, visitors and members learned about scriptural events related to Diwali, and observed traditions such as rangolis and other traditional forms of decorations. Finally, all children were invited to participate in a children’s fair and Kids Diwali Celebration which included food, games and fun activities. Attractions included a fireworks display. Yoga can save government, families’ healthcare costs: Minister PANAJI: Practicing yoga regularly can enable governments and individual households save on healthcare costs, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu said here on Monday. Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day international yoga confer-

US military adopted yoga in training curriculum: Minister PANAJI: The US military has adopted yoga into its training curriculum, Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Naik said on Monday. “Western countries are showing much interest over yoga. In the US alone, nearly 20 million people are practicing yoga and these numbers are increasing by 5 per cent every year. The US military training has adopted yoga in its training curriculum,” Naik said while speaking at the inauguration of a two-day international yoga conference. The Minister also said that countries in Europe had started recognising the benefits of yoga and that several modern medical institutes there had adopted yoga as an alternative treatment for many disorders. “Yoga is growing more popular because of increasing lifestyle-relat-

ed disorders and non-communicable diseases. Some of the non-communicable diseases are growing like an epidemic and there is an urgent need to check its growth. “Yoga along with other drug-less systems were probably the only answer for preventing such epidemics,” Naik said. —IANS

households will have to face the big challenge of how to provide hospitalisation to the family members,” the Minister said. “This is a great opportunity of bringing yoga as an answer to many problems that the global world is facing.” —IANS

Delhi man gets new heart NEW DELHI: A 34-year-old man here got a new lease of life after police created a 3.6-km green corridor to enable a hospital to ferry a human heart in 3.28 minutes, a doctor said. Diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy — advanced heart failure — the patient at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Okhla received the heart harvested from a brain dead patient at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital at Sarita Vihar. The donor was a 30-year-old man declared brain dead after suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. “A heart transplant is required when all other treatment fails,” Z.S. Meharwal, Director at Fortis’ Cardio Vascular Surgery, said. The surgery went well and the patient was stable, he said. In India, some 210,000 patients are waiting for transplants out of which only 8,000 patients are able to get a donor. —IANS

Diabetes: Why good breakfast is the key MADHAVI BHATT TRIVEDI, MUMBAI

Y

ou have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast, as the name implies, is to break the fast between dinner and lunch. If you have type 2 diabetes (T2D), breakfast is necessary and it can have real benefits. In a study, 22 people who controlled their T2D with diet alone or diet plus metformin were studied on two different days. On one, they ate three identical meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the other, they ate only lunch and dinner. On the days they skipped breakfast, their peak blood glucose was 36.8 per cent higher after lunch and 26.6 per cent higher after dinner than on the days they ate breakfast. Regular consumption of breakfast is potentially important for preventing T2D.

Fresh fruit is a great addition to any breakfast given that they provide fibre, vitamins and minerals. (Photo: Pexels)

The key to a healthy meal is to choose a variety of foods to get a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals along with the much-needed fibre that helps manage blood-sugar levels. Here are some options to consider- Dairy: Use non-fat milk instead of whole milk. You can also try non-dairy

alternatives like soy, almond etc. Fruits and veggies: Fresh fruit is a great addition to any breakfast as they provide fibre, vitamins and minerals. Leafy greens like palak, methi, etc.) can be added to all the traditional breakfast foods. Add protein foods like eggs, whole pulses to control hunger.

Young people are ‘critical participants’ of digital health technologies and can judge which related apps are relevant to their age IANS, LONDON

W

ith concerns of digital technology harming young people’s health, a new study says that mobile applications focussed on exercise, diet and wellness promote their overall well-being and act as effective learning tools. Health apps have the potential to act as very engaging and attractive health promotion tools that could help young people to learn about their bodies or improve their physical activity levels, said researchers from University of Birmingham. The study showed that young people are “critical participants” of digital health technologies and are able to judge which health related apps are relevant to their age and

Social media use linked to depression, loneliness: Study NEW YORK: Excessive use of social media including Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram is associated with poor well-being which could lead to depression and loneliness, researchers have warned. The study, published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, showed that limiting screen time on these apps could boost one’s wellness. Researchers from the varsity, included 143 undergraduate participants. They collected objective usage data automatically tracked by iPhones for active apps, not those running in the background, and asked respondents to complete a survey to determine mood.

The participants were then randomly assigned to a control group, which had users maintain their social-media behaviour, or an experimental group that limited time on Facebook and Snapchat to 10 min/platform per day. The team looked at 7 outcome measures including fear of missing out (FOMO), anxiety and depression. The results showed that using less social media than you normally would lead to significant decrease in both depression and loneliness. However, young people aged between 18 to 22 should not stop using social media altogether, suggested the findings. —IANS

the major app stores focused on wellness, diet and exercise and they are of particular interest to young people, however most of these apps are designed for adults,” said Vic-

toria Goodyear, pedagogical researcher from the varsity. For the study, the team included 245 young people aged from 13 to 18. Findings, published in the journal Learning, Media and Technology, showed that one-third of the participants were active users of apps and devices related to exercise, diet and wellness. In addition, schools, peers and parents were powerful influencers over the types of apps and devices young people used. Importantly, many of the participants were able to disregard content that was either irrelevant to them, potentially harmful to their bodies. Health education can be enhanced by learning from the ways in which young people access digital health technologies, the researchers noted.

MUMBAI: Actress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, who believes that the #MeToo movement has been “as eye-opening and devastating as it has been exhilaSonam Kapoor rating”, will galvanise people into action and into a redemption of rights long awaited for the disempowered. Sonam has penned a forthright note on how people must learn to deal with the #MeToo wave. “Yes, a person is innocent until proven guilty but must it come at the cost of rejecting a survivor’s account?” she asked, and added: “While people must be treated as innocent until proven guilty, we need to remember that women are taking on incredible personal risk and trauma to tell their stories. We owe them, at the least, our trust and support.” —IANS

Bridal wear for wedding season IANS, NEW DELHI

E

ven though the big fat weddings are on with full shorsharaaba, the conscientious lot are slowly adapting to the subtle elegance of understated weddings. The rich Jewel tones are back with a vengeance after a couple of pastel seasons, in all fine fabrics — the rich Silks, Kinkhwabs, Velvets and Luxe. Anjali Sharma, Chief Designer and Owner at French Curve and Deepa Reddy, Founder at The Open Trunk give some ideas on how to opt for right colour, cut and fabric while deciding the bridal wear. Colour: Many of the designers are going back to pastels this wedding season with shades of crème, with dainty floral designs for the fresh and soft look. Brides looking to go all out, seem to be leaning towards

embellished gowns in royal colours, fitted with mirror or crystal work to ensure a breath-taking entry to the mandap. Gota Patti work is back this year and seen in

both blouses and in lehengas. Cut and fabric: In terms of cut and style, new age brides are looking at crop tops, cape jackets to team up with their sarees or lehengas. Besides heavy silks, satin and velvet, among people attending weddings, Floral designs always have a dreamy effect on this material and if it’s a saree, try teaming with a solid colour satin blouse. If it’s a kurta try straight cut satin pants for that super glamorous 21st century look. Tradition and sustainable fashion to be in sync: With people more conscious about sustainable products, they want to introduce that message for weddings as well with brides recycling old wedding sarees in the family paying homage to that “something old” sentiment by making it into a lehenga.

leep disturbance among people grieving the recent loss of a spouse may put them at increased risk for cardiovascular illness and death, a study has warned. Recently widowed people are more likely to suffer from sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, that may lead to increased levels of inflammation in the body. Higher levels of inflammation may in turn increase risk for heart diseases, showed the findings published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine. The study found that the link between sleep disturbances

and inflammation was two to three times higher for the bereaved spouses. “The death of a spouse is an

acutely stressful event and they have to adapt to living without the support of the spouse,” said Diana Chirinos from Northwestern Uni-

double the stressor. As a result, their immune system is more overactivated,” Chirinos said. The study included 101 people with an average age of 67. Half were bereaved (identified through

obituaries), and the rest were included in a control group. The researchers compared the self-reported sleep habits of recently widowed people to the control group. Both the groups had sleep disturbances. The researchers found that the link between sleep disturbances and inflammation was two to three times higher for the bereaved spouses. Inflammation was measured by the level of proinflammatory cytokines, which are designed to be short-term fighters of disease but are linked to long-term risk for health problems including cardiovascular disease.
