egastar Amitabh Bachchan starrer film Pink, which deals with crime against women, has been invited for a special screening at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, whose directorial Pink has been invited for a special screening at the United Nations headquarters in New York, feels honored and says the film has initiated a movement. Chowdhury said: “We are really honored. The way people far beyond the target audience have loved Pink is beyond anything we could have imagined. It won’t be wrong to say Pink has initiated a movement.” Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who stars in the film, which deals with crime against women and more, said: “It is indeed a singular honor. Pink was not meant to be an effort to initiate a movement. But if it has initiated a debate, a

Q: What does it feel like to be chosen the third most handsome man in the world next only to Hollywood stars Tom Cruise and Robert Pattinson? A: Well, handsome is as handsome does. I am honored, of course. I told my sons to remember to always thank people for compliments. This is a compliment, not an achievement. Q: Flattered? A: Good looks should never become a part of your internal character. To not care about how you look will make you look even more attractive. Q: It is an honor for our entertainment industry. Do you agree? A: To be counted in the world’s top 10 of anything I guess gets eyeballs,

so in that regard, yes. It’s good. Q: With your looks, why are you not doing films in Hollywood? A: I haven’t liked anything yet. It’s not about Hollywood, it’s always about a good script for me. Q: How do you react to compliments about your looks? A: I react to them like one should react to a compliment. I smile and say, thank you. Neither do I reject it, nor revel in it. Q: Have you beaten the myth that good looking people can’t act? A: Every single good actor has broken that myth. Mr Dilip Kumar, Mr Amitabh Bachchan, Marlon Brando and Brad Pitt are lookers and shakers.

H1B visas made friendlier under new Immigration rules Under the new rule, the USCIS will allow terminated H1B workers a grace period of 60 days to either leave or sort out their paperwork for new jobs MAYANK CHHAYA, CHICAGO

E

ven as broader uncertainty looms over the fate of the H1B visas under the incoming Donald Trump administration, some recent changes by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) make them friendlier to those already on them. The USCIS will now allow terminated H1B visa holders a grace period of 60 days to either leave or sort out their paperwork for new jobs. Although the existing rules did not explicitly state that the terminated H1B worker had to leave immediately, there have been cases where such H1B workers had to find a way to leave the country immediately. Decision-making in such cases came

down to the individual discretion of the immigration officer. “The immigration authorities have now clarified that is not the case ending what many thought was an inhuman provision,” Neeraj

Bhatia, a Silicon Valley based head of an accounting firm and an expert in immigration issues, told IANS. Under its Final Rule published on November 18, 2016, which will be effective from January 17, 2017,

the USCIS will now allow terminated H1B workers a grace period of 60 days to either leave or sort out their paperwork for new jobs. Another change will also prevent the revocation of I-140 by employers for those employees who have held it for more 180 days but whose services were terminated. What this does is help such employees not lose their turn in the protracted green card process once they change over to new jobs. One more significant change that the USCIS has announced relates to employment authorization for H4 visa holders who come as spouses of H1B visa holders. Under this change, those H4 workers will not have to wait for the approval of their extension for them to continue working.

tant to even call the incident terrorism, a Republican Indian American Ohio lawmaker, Niraj Antani, jumped into the fray with a challenge. Democrats see such acts as a result of the proliferation of weapons rather than motivations. In line with this Tim Kaine, who was the Democratic Party’s candidate for vice president, reacting to first reports of the shooting, tweeted that he was “deeply saddened by the senseless act of gun violence.” State Representative Antani, who at 25 years is among the youngest elected officials in the US, tweeted back at Kaine, “But not saddened by the senseless act of machete or car violence?”

BRIEFS Two Indian-Americans arrested for fraud WASHINGTON: Two Indian American top executives of a software and consulting firm have been arrested in the US for allegedly misrepresenting the company's finances, a media report said. Nandu Thondavadi, CEO of Schaumburg-based Quadrant 4 System, and Dhru Desai, its chief financial officer and chairman, were charged with wire fraud and certifying false financial reports related to two acquisitions and the settlement of a lawsuit against the company in 2013, the Chicago Tribune reported. Thondavadi faces an additional charge of making false statements to the Securities and Exchange Commission in May during an investigation into the company's financial practices.

‘Michelle will never run for White House’ WASHINGTON: Outgoing US President Barack Obama has said that his wife and the current First Lady Michelle Obama will never run for the White House, despite a growing chant. The social media has been abuzz for Michelle to run for the 2020 Oval office, however, those close to her have expressed her disinterest, Aol.com reported. In a recently released interview, Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner had asked President Obama about his wife possibility of entering politics. To which, Obama said: "Michelle will never run for office. She is as talented a person as I know. You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she's too sensible to want to be in politics." The call for her to become a candidate in the 2020 race began soon after Donald Trump won on November 8. —IANS

‘Won popular vote, if Clinton’s illegal votes deducted’ IANS, WASHINGTON

P

resident-elect Donald Trump claimed that he not only won the electoral vote but the popular vote as well, if the “millions” of “illegal” votes cast for his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, in the November 8 election are deducted from the tally. “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” EFE news quoted Trump as saying in a tweet, referring to the vote recount effort in three states being headed by Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

In the November 8 election, Trump apparently garnered at least 270 electoral votes, which technically is all that is required to win

the presidency regardless of whether or not a candidate wins the popular vote. In his tweet, one of several that

Trump has fired off in the wake of the Clinton campaign’s stating it will “participate” in the recount effort, the magnate offered no proof of the alleged irregularities he claims took place in the voting, although he said that it would have been much easier for him to win the popular vote if he had limited his campaign to three or four states. “It would have been much easier for me to win the so-called popular vote than the Electoral College in that I would only campaign in 3 or 4 — states instead of the 15 states that I visited. I would have won even more easily and convincingly (but smaller states are forgotten)!” EFE news quoted Trump as saying.

even soldiers, including two officers, were killed on Tuesday after suicide bombers armed with guns and grenades stormed a military base near Jammu, officials said. Three attackers were also gunned down while three more militants died in a shootout with security forces near the International Border with Pakistan. At one stage, the gunmen at the army base in the garrison town of Nagrota, some 15 km from Jammu, also took 12 soldiers, two women and two children hostage. But the army said they were safely rescued. The attacks at the military unit and a BSF camp — both on the outskirts of Jammu city — were

BRIEFS India’s Q2 GDP grows at 7.3% NEW DELHI: India’s GDP for the 2016-17 fiscal’s second quarter ended September, estimated at Rs 29.63 trillion, recorded a growth of 7.3 per cent compared with 7.1 percent in the first quarter, data released on Wednesday showed. However, the Gross Domestic Product growth for second quarter was slower than the 7.6 per cent increase posted in the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal (2015-16).

Congress Twitter account hacked NEW DELHI: Indian National Congress’s official Twitter account was hacked on Thursday morning, a day after the account of its Vice President Rahul Gandhi was hacked. Expletives and abusive tweets were posted on the handle. The Congress said it smacked of “sinister conspiracy.

the latest in a series of escalating militant violence in Jammu and Kashmir after the September 29 surgical strikes at terror launch

pads by the Indian Army in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It was the highest casualty the Indian Army suffered in a single

terror attack after the September 18 killing of 19 soldiers at a military base in the Uri border town in the Kashmir Valley. Army spokesperson Lt. Col Manish Mehta said militants disguised in police uniform targeted the Nagrota camp, close to the headquarters of the Indian Army’s 16 Corps, a military formation that acts as a nerve center against militancy and to defend the border with Pakistan. Lt. Col Mehta told reporters that the militants entered the field regiment camp around 5.30 a.m. They fired indiscriminately and lobbed grenades at the Officers’ Mess. “The terrorists entered two buildings occupied by officers, families and men. This led to a hostage like situation. “The situation was very quickly

Demonetization: When payday pained salaried Indians IANS, NEW DELHI

C

haotic queues got longer on Wednesday as people in large numbers scrambled for money after monthly salaries got credited in bank accounts — the first since the high value currency was scrapped, causing an unprecedented cash deficiency across India. Most private companies in India credit salaries to their employees on the last day of a month even as labor laws allow wages to be disbursed on any day before the 10th of the next month.

As soon as the salaries were credited, millions of employees began queuing up outside banks and ATMs across the country to with-

draw cash to meet their monthly needs and pay their domestic helps, drivers and clear their monthly grocery and other bills. Since the supply of notes from currency chests has failed to keep pace with the demand for cash after 86 per cent of currency in circulation was declared illegal on November 8, the chaos worsened on the payday as more households needed cash than earlier. Several banks ran out of cash within hours of opening. Some bank officials complained that they were getting cash much below what they need.

contained and ... all were successfully rescued, which included 12 soldiers, two ladies and two children.” Mehta said two officers and five soldiers were killed and “bodies of three terrorists were also recovered”. The violence on Tuesday followed days of calm on the border and the Line of Control (LoC) between Indian and Pakistani forces. The two sides have been exchanging heavy mortar and artillery fire for months after the Uri attack. Following that, the Indian Army destroyed at least seven terror launch pads and killed an unknown number of terrorists and sympathizers across the LoC in Pakistani Kashmir. Since then, militants have attacked security forces in at least a dozen places in Jammu and Kashmir.

‘Demonetization to hit real estate sector’ NEW DELHI: Sales volumes in the real estate sector would be negatively affected in 2017 because of the demonetization move, said global credit rating agency Moody’s Investor’s Service on Wednesday. “In the real estate sector, we expect sales volumes to be negatively affected in 2017 because of demonetization but volumes will start to pick up as interest rates decline,” said Moody’s in a statement here. Projecting a stable outlook for non-financial Indian corporates sector-wise, the research firm said credit profiles would improve on sustained economic growth and project completion.

SC orders playing of National Anthem in theaters IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court on Wednesday directed cinema halls to play the National Anthem before the start of movies, saying it will instil “constitutional patriotism as well as committed patriotism and nationalism”. The playing of the anthem will be accompanied by an image of the Tricolor on the screen, the court said while barring its commercial exploitation, dramatization or playing of an abridged version. The order shall be given effect to within a period of 10 days. The court said when the National Anthem is sung or played, it is

imperative on the part of everyone present to show due respect and honor by standing up. “It is because when the National Anthem is sung, the concept of protocol associated with it has its

inherent roots in national identity, national integrity and constitutional patriotism,” the court said. “All cinema halls in India shall play the National Anthem before the feature films start and all pre-

sent in the hall are obliged to stand up to show respect,” said a bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Amitava Roy. It said before “the National Anthem is played or sung in the cinema hall on the screen, the entry and exit doors shall remain closed so that no one can create any kind of disturbance which will amount to disrespect to the National Anthem”. The doors to cinema halls can be opened after the National Anthem is played or sung. The order was passed on a public interest litigation filed by Shayam Narayan Chouksey who sought guidelines on playing the National Anthem.

Temples turn richer with ‘sin’ currencies after Nov 8 Hundi dontions, have increased over the last fortnight, even though religious places have not been provided any exemption to accept the old currency notes IANS, NEW DELHI

D

emonetization has made India’s temples significantly richer as hundi deposits have seen an upsurge with “sin” currencies after November 8 when the government spiked 500- and 1,000-rupee notes. These notes are still being put into the hundis, or donation boxes, as only a few of these temples are strictly discouraging or prohibiting people from offering them. Hundi deposits, which are anonymous donations, have increased over the last fortnight even though religious places per se have not been provided an exemption to accept the old notes. But Finance Ministry officials told IANS that the cash deposited

by temples from the hundis will not come under the tax scanner. “For temples, there is an exemption that if the money is from the donation boxes, we will not ask questions. There is no limit on that (deposits),” an official told IANS. The charitable trusts that maintain the temples will, however, have to keep proper records of the devotees who are directly giving

them the donations. An official of the richest temple of the country, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) in Andhra Pradesh, told IANS that TTD was “depositing these (old) notes in banks as the government has already clarified that the cash deposited from offerings made by devotees at temples will not be taxed”. Temple officials had, before

demonetization, told IANS that the hundi collection this fiscal is expected to be around Rs 1,000 crore ($146 million) out of the total revenue of Rs 2,600 crore. This target, may be crossed following demonetization. The famed Durga temple of Vijayawada has seen its hundi donations increased by over Rs one crore after demonetization.

According to its managing committee, the temple has received Rs 2.89 crore in the current month so far, which is already Rs one crore higher than the usual collection. “These include 2,941 Rs 1,000 notes and 15,723 Rs 500 notes. The devotees also dropped 48 new notes of Rs 2,000 in the hundis.” The TTD temple in Chennai also witnessed a sudden spike in hundi offerings. An official said the normal hundi collection is around Rs one crore per month, however, post-demonetisation the collections have spiked to over Rs two crore with several bundles of 500 and 1,000 rupee notes being found in the donation boxes. The temple has not put up any notice asking the public not to offer the demonetized currencies. At the Palani Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu an official told IANS that the hundi collections will be deposited in the bank and demonetization was not an issue. There are some major temples which have prohibited devotees from putting the old currency notes into the donation boxes. V.N. Das, National Communication Director, Iskcon, told IANS: “We are a charitable trust. For documented donations we are obviously not taking old notes. And we are not allowing anyone to put the old notes in the drop boxes.

Where has world’s cheapest smartphone, disappeared? Is this the biggest tech disappointment of 2016, despite Freedom 251 making global headlines throughout the year? NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI

I

f you are among those who pre-booked the world’s cheapest smartphone at Rs 251 (less than $4) and are yet to hear from its Noida-based makers, you are not alone. The promise of delivering “nearly 200,000 Freedom 251 handsets” has fallen flat and most people who booked the handset are yet to see one. After announcing that it has delivered 5,000 Freedom 251 smartphones in July, Ringing Bells Pvt Ltd said it would deliver 65,000 more to those who had

booked the device in cash on delivery (COD) mode. After that, no new numbers have been shared and it appears that the initial hype has fizzled out. The company has since forayed into making TVs and other smartphones, burying the Freedom 251 dream. Is this the biggest tech disappointment of 2016, despite Freedom 251 making the national and global headlines throughout the year? “I think we could have called it the biggest disappointment only if there had been great expectations

attached to it. Every educated person, or those having fair understanding of technology, doubted it. Some may have booked one just out of curiosity but that never meant they took it seriously,” Faisal Kawoosa, Principal Analyst (Telecoms) at CyberMedia Research (CMR), a market research firm, told IANS. The company in mid-February this year had planned to deliver 2.5 million handsets before June 30. Ringing Bells received mammoth — over 70 million — registrations before its payment gateway crashed. “I wouldn’t call it biggest tech

When asked, a Ringing Bells spokesperson said the company is working on improving its reach through distributor networks.

The pragmatic revolutionary

Fidel Castro and his legacy In his almost half-century rule, the Commandante dealt with ten US presidents and survived several American assassination attempts

When Castro gave a bear hug to a surprised Indira Gandhi NEW DELHI: Fidel Castro, the iconic Cuban revolutionary leader who died on Friday, will be remembered in India for his close association with the Nehru-Gandhi family and especially his “sisterly” ties with former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi which he sealed with a bear hug during the Non-Aligned Summit in New Delhi in 1983. At the inauguration of the Seventh Non-Aligned Summit, March 7-12, 1983 at Vigyan Bhavan, Castro announced that, as host of the previous summit in Havana in 1979, he was happy and proud to pass the conference gavel to his “sister” Indira Gandhi. Both then rose from behind the podium and when the two leaders came to face each other, Gandhi expectantly extended her arm to receive the big wooden gavel. But Castro did not reciprocate. Gandhi, a

s a teenager, he once wrote to a US President congratulating him on his re-election and requesting a $10 bill because he “had never seen one and would like to have one of them”, but within a few decades, turned to be the nearest but most long-lasting bugbear for a whole series of American Presidents, who tried their best to dislodge or eliminate him. But the Commandante saw all of them fall flat. When Fidel Castro took power in Cuba, Eisenhower was US President, Khruschev ran the Soviet

Union, Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s Prime Minister and the Berlin Wall was yet to be built. He would go on to outlast all of them, and many others too, while building a Leftleaning system that has stood the test of time while others of the ilk collapsed, but also went on to inspire the whole Latin American region — though the ‘Pink Tide’ is currently on wane. In his almost half-century rule, Castro dealt with ten US presidents. Stepping down from power “temporarily” in 2006 and fully in 2008, he was well among the most influential revolutionary-statesmen of the 20th century as well the last of a

generation of mythical insurgents that included the likes of Ho Chi Minh, Nelson Mandela, Patrice Lumumba, and others, among the most recognizable and certainly one of the most polarizing. His critics blame him for nearly leading the world into a nuclear war (the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962), repression, and destabilizing not only the Caribbean and the Latin American region but a faraway continent by exporting revolution (and soldiers) to Angola, Mozambique and Ethiopia. On the other hand, there are those who praise him for his social and health reforms on his impoverished and exploited home-

land, for steadfastly opposing imperialism and inequitable globalization. In a lengthy series of interviews to French academician and author Ignacio Ramonet in the early 2000s that became nearest to an autobiography he would write, he admitted with his background, he could have well become conservative in outlook but made himself into a revolution-

trifle taken aback, extended her arm a second time, but Castro again failed to respond but kept smiling mysteriously. As a slightly embarrassed Gandhi proffered her hand a trifle hesitatingly a third time, Castro pulled a surprised Gandhi to him and gave her a giant bear hug in full view of the hall, before parting with the gavel.

ary, starting as a rebel when six or seven, not against his father but “authority”. What could be his legacy? Ramonet cites maintaining Cuba’s sovereignty while ensuring housing and education, abolishing racism, emancipating women, eradicating illiteracy, drastically reducing infant mortality, and higher level of general knowledge.

Second Indian American picked Seema Verma will play a crucial role in carrying out Trump’s campaign promise of scrapping President Barack Obama’s healthcare programme ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

P

resident-elect Donald Trump has selected a second Indian American Seema Verma for a highlevel position in his administration, assigning her “to the dream team that will transform our healthcare system,” a major campaign promise. Verma, who has worked closely on healthcare with Vice Presidentelect Mark Pence in Indiana state, is to be the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services overseeing government health insurance programmes. With a track-record of developing Republican-friendly healthcare programmes, she will play a crucial role in carrying out the high-priority Trump campaign promise of scrapping President Barack Obama’s healthcare programme, popularly

Short takes Demonetization hits NRI weddings DUBAI: Indians living in the UAE are mourning the demonetization of high value currency by the Indian government, which has hit their families back home, ruining many NRI weddings, travel and house construction plans, a media report said. Several Indian families living abroad, who had plans to visit India around the year-end, are keeping a close watch on the prevailing situation. According to travel agents, if the present cash shortage situation in India doesn’t improve in a few days, many families are going to cancel their visit to the country, Khaleej Times reported.

Indian assaulted in US restaurant’s bar PITTSBURGH (US): An Indian man was assaulted at a restaurant’s bar in the South Hills Village in Pittsburgh because he was mistaken as a Muslim, media reports said this week. The police arrived at the Red Robin Restaurant, where Anukur Mehta, directed it to the suspect, Jeffrey Burgess, Wtae-TV reported. Mehta told the police that Burgess was seated next to him at the bar and began making racial and ethnic slurs. He told Mehta that “things are different now” and “I don’t want you sitting next to me. States Ambassador to the United Nations, a cabinet-level post. Although Verma’s job is not of cabinet rank now, it has great political importance and she will

be in the national spotlight because she will be working on the Republican vow to end Obama’s signature healthcare programme, which attempts to make affordable health insurance available to all, and come up with a new model. “I look forward to helping him tackle our nation’s daunting healthcare problems in a responsible and sustainable way,” Verma said. The Medicare programme that she will oversee provides insurance for over 46 million retirees and senior citizens, who are a politically powerful block, and Medicaid, which covers the poor, has about 60 million people enrolled in it. Together they are about a third of the US population. Additionally now, she will have to help shape a programme for those who are outside of these two programmes and do not get health insurance from their employers.

Trump meets Indian origin businessman NEW YORK: President-elect Donald Trump who is scouting for talent to join his administration has met Indian American real estate executive, Sandeep Mathrani. His name was on a public list of those who met Trump, but no further details were available. The Chicago-based executive is the third Indian American to meet with Trump and the other two, Nikki Haley and Seema Verma, have been selected for positions in his administration. Crain’s Chicago Business said that Mathrani is the CEO of General Growth Properties, which owns malls. It quoted a company official, Kevin Barry, as saying: “Sandeep is meeting with Trump today, I can confirm that.” Crain’s Business said: “Mathrani earned $39.2 million last year — more than any other CEO of a US real estate investment trust — so leaving the private sector for a government post would involve a major financial sacrifice.” —IANS

Australia’s most-wanted Fiji-Indian terrorist held PARITOSH PARASHER, MELBOURNE

O

nce believed to be dead, Australia’s most wanted Islamist terrorist, Neil Prakash, whose father is a Fiji-Indian, is reported to have been arrested while trying to cross over from war-torn Syria into Turkey. According to the governmentowned Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Prakash was arrested by Turkish officials when he tried to cross the Syrian border

into Turkey using false documents and a fake name. A confirmation of Neil Prakash’s arrest by the Australian government is still awaited. Neil Prakash, also known as Abu Khaled al-Cambodi, has been presented as a key player in inspiring violent terrorism in Australia. A son of an absentee Fiji-Indian father and Cambodian mother, Neil Prakash was reportedly involved in foiled terror plots at Anzac Day commemorations in 2015 and 2016. Australia’s Attorney-General

George Brandis had described Neil as “Australia’s number one terrorist” and “most prominent and dangerous Australian” earlier this year. While the Australian media is

abuzz with the sensational news about the arrest of the 25-year-old Islamist terrorist since Friday afternoon, the government is yet to make a formal announcement.

‘Conspired to launch attacks in India’ IANS, NEW YORK

A

Khalistan supporter has admitted in a federal court that he conspired with terrorists to launch attacks in India to target a government official for assassination or maiming, according to officials. Balwinder Singh, an Indian citizen holding a Green Card, made the admission before Federal Judge Larry R. Hicks in Reno, Nevada state, this week that he provided a co-conspirator with night vision goggles for the planned attack as a part of their terrorist conspiracy. Singh’s conspiracy “was part of a movement to create an independent Sikh state in Punjab”, according to a

statement by the prosecutors. “Singh attempted to provide material support and resources to terrorists to create violence and dis-

ruption abroad,” said acting Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord, adding, “Identifying, thwarting and holding accountable

individuals who pursue international terrorism is a top priority of the Department of Justice,” she said. Prosecutors said the conspirators were to decide on the government official to be targeted after one of them reached India. Singh’s co-conspirators in the plot uncovered by US officials in 2013 were not identified. But prosecutors said the law enforcement officials caught one of them in San Francisco on December 9, 2013 while trying to board a flight to Bangkok on way to India to carry the terror attack. “As a result, the planned attack never occurred,” the statement said. That person was carrying the night vision goggles provided by Singh.

arthiv Patel struck a whirlwind half-century to enable India thrash England by eight wickets in the third Test at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium here. Patel stormed to 67 runs off 54 balls as India overhauled the 103run target a short while after the tea break on the fourth day of the Test. Indian skipper Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on six runs at the other end. Patel hit a boundary to overhaul the target in style as India finished their second innings at 104/2. Pacer Chris Woakes and leg-spinner Adil Rashid bagged a wicket each for England. India now lead the five-Test series 2-0. The hosts had won the second Test in Visakhapatnam by 246 runs while the first match of the series had ended in a draw at Rajkot. India thus maintained their record of not losing a Test match at this venue for the last 22 years. The first Test hosted by this venue was in December 10-14, 1994, which saw then cricket powerhouse West Indies beat India by 243 runs. Resuming the fourth day’s play at the overnight score of 78/4, England lost quick wickets to end their second innings at 236 runs. Aus beat India 4-3 in final match of hockey series VICTORIA (AUSTRALIA): Australia defeated India 4-3 in the final game of the two-match hockey series here this week. Playing with 10 men for large periods of the third quarter, India defended stoutly but were edged past by the home side in a pulsating match. The visitors were the first to rock the board, Akashdeep Singh scoring in the sixth minute. The home team settled into the game a bit as the period went on and scored in the 13th minute via Trent Mitton. That goal would take both teams into the first break level at 1 goal apiece. there were no more hiccups till the tea break. Pujara, who scored 25 runs, perished after tea while attempting to sweep a Rashid delivery which was pitched a little outside leg-stump. The Saurashtra batsman misjudged the bounce and ended up offering a top edge to Root at short fine leg.

As Kohli joined him at the other end, Patel continued to go after the England bowlers to end up with 11 boundaries and a six, and India won in dominant fashion. Ravindra Jadeja, who posted his career best Test score 90 runs during India’s first innings and also bagged a total of four wickets, took home the Man of the Match award. Earlier, striding to the middle with England tottering at 107/6, Hameed was involved in crucial partnerships with Root, Woakes and James Anderson. The opener, who was forced to come in a number eight due to a hand injury, batted patiently for 156 deliveries to be unbeaten on 59, hitting six boundaries and a six. Hameed and Root were involved a 45-run partnership before the latter edged Jadeja to Ajinkya Rahane in the slips. Root was the top scorer in England’s second innings with 78 runs off 179 balls which included six hits to the fence. For India, star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin ended up with figures of 3/81 while Jadeja, Mohammed Shami and Jayant Yadav bagged a brace each. England lost three wickets in the morning session to reach 156/7 at lunch. Jadeja, who opened the proceedings for the hosts with fast bowler Umesh Yadav, struck twice before lunch to give India the upper hand. Jadeja trapped night-watchman Gareth Batty (0) plumb in front in his very first over of the day before dismissing make-shift opener Root just before the lunch break.

Saina advances in Macau Open MACAU: Star Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal defeated Dinar Dyah Ayustine of Indonesia to enter the third round of the $120,000 Macau Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament here. In a match which lasted around one hour, Saina edged past her Indonesian opponent 17-21, 21-18, 21-12 in the women’s singles event.

After going down in the first game, the top seed Hyderabadi regained her calm and clinched the next two games to advance in the tournament. In men’s singles, Parupalli Kashyap, making a comeback after a long layoff, bowed out of the tournament losing his second round match to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu Hsien 13-21, 20-22. In a match which lasted 45 minutes, Kashyap gave away the first game easily but in the second game he displayed some quality strokes — he, however, failed to overpower his opponent. In men’s doubles category, it was end of road for Indian pair Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy who were beaten by Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Hendra Wijaya of Singapore 22-20, 21-19. The Indian duo started the proceedings on a good note but after a hard fought battle they lost the first game. The second game saw both sides battling for each point but the Singapore pair proved superior and clinched the issue. —IANS

Shutdown cripples normal life The opposition Congress held a protest sit-in at the Raj Bhavan in Kerala

No black money in co-op banks, says Kerala CM

T

he dawn-to-dusk shutdown called by the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala this week crippled normal life as only private vehicles plied on roads and offices registered minimal attendance. The opposition Congress, however, held a protest sit-in at the Raj Bhavan here. While opposition parties called for nationwide protests on November 28 in different states after the November 8 demonetization, the LDF led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist announced a shutdown in Kerala to denounce demonetization that left state cooperative banks in turmoil.

Organizers of the shutdown had left tourism and banking establishments out of the purview of the bandh call. Movement of pilgrims to the famed Sabarimala temple remained

The organizers left tourism and banking establishments out of the purview of the bandh call unaffected as their vehicles were allowed to move despite the shutdown. Attendance in banks was poor as vehicular traffic and business took a hit. The Pinarayi Vijayan-led

state government had called the strike to also protest the “rash” behavior of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in declining to meet an all-party delegation from Kerala, which wanted to apprise him of the turmoil in the cooperative sector. In Kerala, nearly 1,600 primary cooperative banks are attached to 14 district banks, which are linked to the Kerala State Cooperative Bank. Deposits in these cooperative banks total around Rs 1.27 lakh crore, Cooperation Minister A.C. Moideen said last week. “The situation in Kerala is going from bad to worse... the entire system here is going to collapse,” said Finance Minister Thomas Issac, while launching a protest here in the state capital.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said there is “no black money in cooperative banks” and everything was according to rules and regulations. Vijayan, addressing a meeting of representatives from the cooperative sector here, declared that Kerala will “not succumb fully to RBI with regards to the cooperative banks”. “There is no black money in the cooperative banks and the business is as per the rules and regulations. We are not going to succumb to the RBI, but we have no qualms in them or the enforcement agencies conducting checks on these banks,” said Vijayan. A few months back at Kochi officials of the Income Tax department were not allowed to conduct an inspection at a cooperative bank following stiff resistance from the local trade union people. The cooperative banking sector in Kerala is a three-tier system, with about 1,600 primary cooperative banks attached to 14 district banks, which are further linked to the apex Kerala State Cooperative Bank. The total deposits in these cooperative banks is around Rs 1.27 lakh crore. Trouble started for the cooperative banking sector in Kerala when the RBI withdrew the permission to cooperative banks to

accept the spiked Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currencies. Consequent to the RBI’s tough position, the traditional political rival fronts have been very critical of the Modi government for its stand on the cooperative banks. But with the BJP solidly behind the Centre’s move to reign in these cooperative banks, State Cooperative Minister Kadakampally Surendran said that directives have gone to cooperative banks that they should comply with taking up the ‘Know Your Customer’ details. One reason for a change in the state government’s stand is, according to reports, old currency worth Rs 1,624 crore is being held in these cooperative banks. —IANS

AIADMK legislators hold ‘elephant 42 Kerala treasuries cashless puja’ in Kerala for Jayalalithaa

BRIEFS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thousands of people were left standing outside treasuries and banks on the first salary-pension day after the November 8 demonetization, as 42 state treasuries remained cashless till noon, said a Kerala Minister. State Finance Minister Thomas Issac told reporters that there was no financial crunch — rather the

crunch was of currency. Despite that, there were no reports of any untoward incident, he said. “Banks do not have the money to disburse. Till now, 42 state treasuries are unable to disburse money. We asked for Rs 1,000 crore to be distributed to banks with Rs 500 crore on December 1 and the rest on December 2,” said Issac.

Cuddalore is around 185 kilome-

ters from here. According to the weather office, Nada is about 710 km southeast of Chennai, 670 km east-southeast of Puducherry. The system is very likely to move west-northwestward, intensify further and cross the north Tamil Nadu coast. wo AIADMK legislators from Tamil Nadu and their supporters held an “elephant puja” here for the overall well being of their party chief and Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa, presently convalescing at a hospital in Chennai. Three elephants were kept ready this week at an elephant safari park at Kumily near here along with a group of Hindu priests from Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK delegation was led by legislators T.Selvam and S.T.K. Chekkeiye besides hundreds of their party workers. After the hour-long ‘puja’, the elephants were also fed their favorite food items. “This is for our Amma and to pray for her health,” Selvam told reporters.

Gauri’s brave and fabulously heroine Kaira has chosen to live may not be the one you or I have love, or would choose to live. But heck, who gives us the right to judge

Kaira? She obviously doesn’t care what we think of hera or does she? There is a disarming question mark, followed by a don’t-care-adamn exclamation mark to every sentence from life’s Book Of Experience that Kaira punctuates with her passion. She is a woman of whimsy, a child of caprice, waking up to a new dawn of desires every morning, and damned if she doesn’t live out her daily desires to the brim. She may break into a jig with a lovely cultured house help(the maid servants in Gauri Shinde’s and her husband Balki’s films deserve a separate review) or burst in a confessional outburst in front of her(embarrassed) parents and their (stunned) guests.

Q: How do you react to compliments about your looks? A: I react to them like one should react to a compliment. I smile and say, thank you. Neither do I reject it, nor revel in it. Phone scams cost victims thousands

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- Authorities are warning the elderly and others to watch out for telephone scams involving family members in trouble and requests for immediate payments-often using gift cards--that have cost victims thousands of dollars. Los Angeles police Officer Sandra Zamora of the Devonshire Division said on November 29 that “common” scams include the caller describing a relative in jail who needs bail money, a family member being held for ransom, or an elderly person being told they owe money immediately. People have lost between $4,000 and $10,000 for the jail and ransom scams in particular, the officer said. ‘They come into the station to file a report, but the reality is the scammers use Google (phone) numbers so we can’t track it,’ Zamora said. Other types of scams involve people calling and acting as if they’re with the Internal Revenue Service or technical support for a computer, Zamora explained. ‘It started in the summer — and it’s just been every day, it seems, like at least a couple of people say they were scammed,’ she said. Those caught in the scam are told to immediately wire the money or purchase a gift card from a retailer like Target and then scratch off the number on the back and give the code. ‘People are falling for that,’ Zamora said, adding the scammers will do research where they find out the name of a family member or have someone screaming in the background to make the incident sound authentic. ‘A lot of people can be gullible because they don’t know what’s going on, especially when it’s a grandchild or someone else asking for help,’ Zamora said. ‘We have pamphlets here at the front desk. A lot of elderly people are losing their money, but they aren’t getting it back. ... The long story short is if anybody is asking you to pay with any type of gift card, it’s not legit.’

Indian man threatens to blow up plane, held BY A STAFF WRITER ALTIMORE, MD -- Authorities in California have identified an Indian American man from Maryland who they say threatened to blow up a plane that was to fly from Oakland, California, to Baltimore. Media outlets reported that 32-yearold Arpan Shah of Sykesville, Maryland, was arrested November 22 at Oakland International Airport. Alameda County Sheriff ’s Office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly told reporters that the plane taxied from the gate on its way to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Shah was arrested after Southwest Airlines 5135 returned to the gate when Shah told passengers he was going to blow up the plane in midair. Shah was arrested and charged with making criminal threats. He is being held at the Glenn Dyer Jail in Oakland. No explosives were found when the plane was searched and passengers were rescreened. The captain of the flight told sheriff’s

Once airborne, he continued to say the plane was going to blow up, the sheriff’s office said The plane returned to the Oakland airport, and the passengers and baggage

were removed while an explosive detection team searched it. The passengers and baggage were also rescreened. The flight left for Baltimore about three hours after its scheduled departure, airport officials said, and landed safely in Baltimore. “We don’t know why he was acting the way he was acting,” Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said. Shah’s father, however, believes that his son is a good man and may have possibly acted under the influence of alcohol. “He is a good (man). We have a convenience store next door. He was supposed to come back last night but he did not come. And so, we were worried,” Shah’s father added. He said that his son was drinking alcohol before he got on the plane, and doesn’t believe he made the threats he is accused of making. “He said his flight was delayed by over an hour and so he was drinking beer,” he explained. Shah posted bail on the morning of November 23 and was released from jail.

community news- east coast held for killing Hate crimes on rise after Trump win Priest lover’s husband Friday, 02 DECEMBER, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- At least 701 hate crimes–many at even elementary schools–occurred across the United States in the week since the presidential election, reported the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), in data released recently. SPLC collected the data using an online reporting form on its website, and tracked incidents from November 9 to 16, the week following election night of November 8, in which Republican Donald Trump emerged the winner via electoral college votes. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by at least 1.7 million votes, as of November 21. The vast majority of incidents reported–206– were anti-immigrant, followed by anti-African American violence. Fifty-one incidents of antiMuslim hate crimes were also reported. Some 270 bias-related incidents occurred at K-12 schools and universities. Surprisingly, the greatest number of hate crimes–82--were reported in California, the bluest state in the nation. Texas and New York also each reported more than 50 bias-related crimes. In Oregon, a Muslim woman riding public transportation was affronted by a group of teenagers who yelled that she was a terrorist, that President-elect Trump was going to deport her, and that she would not be able to wear her hijab

W

anymore. When the teens were leaving, they tried to spit on her, according to the SPLC. A Gwinnett County, Georgia, high school teacher said she was left a note in class Nov. 18 telling her that her Muslim headscarf “isn’t allowed anymore.” In Fremont, Calif.–home to one of the largest populations of South Asian Americans in the country–41-year-old Salonica ‘Nicky’ Pancholy, who wears a scarf because of hair loss, was hiking the popular Mission Peak trail November 16. When the Indian American returned to the parking lot, she found her car window shattered, her purse gone. The East Bay Regional Parks police are investigating the incident. Fremont Police Department spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said that the incident has been classified as a hate crime, because a burglary was involved, she said, adding: ‘Hate speech itself is not a crime.’ Civil rights organizations have maintained

there is an under-reporting of hate crimes, as law enforcement and prosecutors often fail to categorize a crime in that manner. In Boston, Mass., Harvard University law student Harmann Singh–who wears a religiously mandated turban and beard–was shopping at a store, when a man came in and said: “Oh look, there’s a (expletive) Muslim.” Singh said the man continued to follow him around the store, asking him where he was from. According to Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Council of American Islamic Relations, there has been a definite spike in hate crimes nationwide following the election. “Donald Trump’s entire campaign mainstreamed Islamophobia. The election results validated his hateful rhetoric,” said Hooper. Dozens of reports have come in about the harassment of Muslim women or women perceived to be Muslim, reported Hooper, adding that women of other faiths have been wearing hijabs to show solidarity for Muslim women. On November 19, the FBI released its report on hate crimes for the year 2015, which–for the very first time–tracked incidents targeted at South Asian American religions. Of the 5,850 total incidents, 257 were directed at Muslims, with 307 victims. Six hate crimes targeted Sikhs, with six victims. Five hate crimes were directed against Hindus, with five victims.

Teen gets 40 yrs for killing store owner BY A STAFF WRITER HESTERFIELD, VA -- A teenager in Chesterfield County, Va., has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the attempted robbery and fatal shooting of convenience store owner Harshad Patel. Chesterfield Circuit Court Judge David E. Johnson recently refused to grant leniency to 19-year-old Trayvon Malik Wilhite, which the defense had pushed for in his role in the January 11 crime that left the 55-year-old Patel dead. The judge said Wilhite intentionally pointed a gun at Patel, a father of two, and fired as the Indian American store owner ducked for cover. Johnson said Wilhite could then have left the store but instead made a premeditated decision to break the law.

Judge Johnson ultimately ruled that Wilhite, who was arrested in January along with Thomas Jennings, III and a 14-year-old boy, later learned to be Wilhite’s younger brother Tyquise, be sentenced to a total of 73

years in prison with 33 suspended for the killing and attempted robbery of Patel. After the arrest, Wilhite confessed he was the lone shooter in the crime, which was captured on surveillance video. The video shows Jennings entering the Marketplace #21 convenience store first, followed by Trayvon Wilhite with a pistol in hand. The single shot taken went through Patel’s right arm and through his chest, fracturing a rib and penetrating the upper lobe of his lung before slicing a major artery that supplies blood to the right arm. Patel was found by a customer who arrived later to buy lottery tickets. Wilhite faced a maximum punishment of life plus 23 years. But recommended state sentencing guidelines called for an active prison term of between 25 years and 6 months on the low end and 42 years and 6 months on the high end.

Hindu Priest Raghua Sharma

BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA – The Indian American community is buzzing about the arrest of local Hindu priest Raghua Sharma, who was allegedly involved in killing his lover’s husband. Sharma, 58, is among four suspects arrested for the alleged murder of 60-year-old Sacramento native Ashok Kumar. According to the police, he helped with the funeral of his alleged victim. Kumar was found dead around 11:22 p.m. on August 12 at a home in the 8000 block of Grandstaff Drive, when the police responded to a call reporting a burglary in progress. When the police arrived, they found a woman outside the home and a man unresponsive on the floor inside the home. The Sacramento Fire Department arrived and pronounced the man dead. The police said the woman, who was the victim’s wife, told officers that she did not get a good look at the intruder, but investigators did not believe it was a random incident. The investigators continued the search for suspects, and a month later arrested Kumar’s wife, Rohini Kumar, 53; Tiwan Greenwade, 37; and Vicky Rainone, 47. Following a detailed investigation, Fijiborn Sharma was arrested on October 20. The police said members of the Hindu American community believed Kumar’s wife Rohini was having an affair with Sharma. “He had a relationship with that woman, people were talking about it in the community,” says Sunil Prakash. Pandit Girwar Maharaj said that the victim had a life insurance policy, and his wife and Sharma were trying to get the money to return to their native place in Fiji.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a decision to scrap Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes to curb black money. And if you have plans to travel, Vikram Lalvani, travel advisor of Sterling Holidays, has a few tips to offer on how to travel hassle-free. Book packages: Try and book allinclusive packages which will cover travel and meals once you reach your destination, so you are not strapped for cash at the last minute.

Online payment: Book your stay well before reaching the destination. These are not the times to backpack and find a hotel on arrival. So, book online. Travel agent: Check before travelling to ensure that your travel agent will accept cheques or credit and debit cards. Download mobile wallet apps: Several cashless payment apps have wide usage, and even some small and pop stores use them. Download one or two apps before your journey, so that you can pay electronically wherever possible. ATMs and banks: Before leaving home, identify the banks and ATMs near your hotel or on your travel route. On the go, if you spot a branch of your bank or see an ATM, withdraw cash, even if you have enough money or don’t foresee any expenditure. —IANS

father's love can have a special influence on young adults, while it can boost the maths grades of the teenage daughter, researchers said. The study found that fathers from low-income families support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism, self-efficacy, and, ultimately, higher achievement at school. Celebrities marketing unhealthy food: Study Celebrity food endorsements promote higher product preference, and exposure to any kind of food advertising is linked to “excessive consumption, researchers warn IANS, NEW YORK

A

vast majority of the food and beverage products endorsed by some of the most popular celebrities in the US are unhealthy, finds a new study. The findings showed that advertisements on fast foods, sweets as well as non-alcoholic beverages like soda and other sugary drinks, were the second-largest in the endorsement category, comprising 18 per cent of endorsements and frequently targetted children and adolescents as the audience. Celebrity food endorsements promote higher product preference, and exposure to any kind of food advertising is linked to “excessive consumption, the researchers warned. “Research has already shown that food advertising leads to overeating and the food industry spends $1 billion per year marketing to youth alone,” lead author Marie Bragg, assistant professor at the New York University (NYU).

Full-calorie soft drinks were the most commonly endorsed in the category. Of 69 beverages endorsed, 49 or 71 per cent were sugar-sweetened. Twenty-one out of 26 food products — or 81 percent — were deemed as “nutrient poor”. In contrast, water-related endorsements appeared only thrice. Also, none of the stars were found endorsing fruits, vegetables or whole grains. Such advertisements have led to an alarming rise in childhood and teenage obesity, the researchers rued in the paper published in the journal Pediatrics. The study used a rigorous nutritional analysis to evaluate the health quotient of food and drinks marketed by music stars, reviewing dozens of advertisements that were disseminated over a 14-year period. “Because of our childhood and teenage obesity public health crises, it is important to raise awareness about how companies are using celebrities popular with these audiences to market their unhealthy products,” added Bragg.

New treatment shows promise against aggressive anal cancer IANS, NEW YORK

R

esearchers have identified a promising new antibody that can help patients with aggressive and metastatic anal cancer. The findings, of the first clinical trial for metastatic patients, showed that the treatment with antibody nivolumab — one of the drugs represented among the growing arsenal of immunotherapy therapies — may help a majority of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal (SCCA). Metastatic SCCA, a cancer often associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is normally treated with chemotherapy. However, treatment with nivolumab freed the immune system to attack cancer by disrupting a brake that halts immune response and showed significant response in

70 per cent of patients in the study. “Although a rare malignancy, the incidence is on the rise and has a strong association with the Human papillomavirus (HPV) virus,” said Cathy Eng, professor at University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Centre. Nivolumab was found to unleash an immune system attack on cancer by blocking the activation of a protein called PD-1 on T cells, white blood cells, viruses or bacteria that have specific targets. PD-1 — turned on by a ligand called PD-L1 often found on cancer cells — acts as a brake, or checkpoint, to shut down activated T cells. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 8,000 people will be diagnosed with anal cancer in the US in 2016 and more than 1,000 people will die from the disease.

The New York University study finds 81 percent food products as ‘nutrient poor’

“As the popularity of celebrities among adolescents makes them uniquely poised to serve as positive role models, they ought to endorse healthy products and aid in exacerbating the society’s struggle with obesity,” added Alysa N. Miller from NYU.

Genetic circuit cells kill cancer As tumours develop and grow, they outstrip the supply of oxygen delivered by existing blood vessels resulting in cancer cells needing to adapt to a low oxygen environment IANS, LONDON

R

esearchers have engineered cells with a “built-in genetic circuit” that produces a molecule that impairs the ability of cancer cells to survive and grow in their low oxygen environment. The genetic circuit produces the machinery necessary for the production of a compound that inhibits a protein which has a significant and critical role in the growth and survival of tumours. This results in the cancer cells being unable to survive in the low oxygen, low nutrient tumour micro-environment. “In a wider sense, we have given these engineered cells the ability to

Tumours primarily hijack the function of protein (HIF-1) to survive and grow.

fight back — to stop a key protein from functioning in cancer cells,” said lead researcher Ali Tavassoli,

Professor at the University of Southampton in Britain. “This opens up the possibility for

the production and use of sentinel circuits, which produce other bioactive compounds in response to environmental or cellular changes, to target a range of diseases including cancer,” Tavassoli said. As tumours develop and grow, they rapidly outstrip the supply of oxygen delivered by the existing blood vessels. This results in cancer cells needing to adapt to a low-oxygen environment. To enable them to survive, adapt and grow in the low oxygen or ‘hypoxic’ environment, tumours contain increased levels of a protein called Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1). This protein senses reduced oxygen levels and triggers many changes in cellular function, including a changed metabolism

and sending signals for the formation of new blood vessels. It is thought that tumours primarily hijack the function of this protein (HIF-1) to survive and grow. “In an effort to better understand the role of HIF-1 in cancer, and to demonstrate the potential for inhibiting this protein in cancer therapy, we engineered a human cell line with an additional genetic circuit that produces the HIF-1 inhibiting molecule when placed in a hypoxic environment,” Tavassoli explained. The research, published in the journal ACS Synthetic Biology, demonstrates possibility of adding new machinery to human cells enabling them to make therapeutic agents in response to disease signals.

New drug to suppress asthma Teenagers drink a bathtub IANS, MELBOURNE

A

n Australian Nobel Prize-winning scientist is developing a drug to counter allergies and asthma, a statement has said. Still in its initial stage, the drug can be taken as tablets, capsules, liquids or powder, Xinhua news agency reported. Barry Marshall, a microbiology professor from University of Western Australia, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 2005 for stomach ulcer research, is working on the new drug. The medication, named Immbalance, aims to suppress an overactive immune system. “This actually arose from work

Genes shape your gut microbe NEW YORK: Your genes and place of birth can have a major effect on the formation of the microbial community in the gut — which plays an important role in keeping one healthy, a research showed. The study proved that gut microbiome plays a leading role in the body's immune response. Thus, controlling the microbes in the gut could influence the immune system and disease vulnerability. we were doing on helicobacter, the stomach bug, for which Robin Warren and I won the Nobel Prize a few years ago,” Marshall said. “We’ve discovered the way it survives in your body is by suppressing the immune system so

you can’t get rid of it. “I can’t guarantee that it’s going to cure allergy sufferers... we think this kind of thing will bring people who are hyper reactive... down into the normal range.” Marshall, who has spent the last seven years in developing this drug, said that it can be formulated as tablets, capsules, liquids or powder. “Children could spread the powder on their cereal or put it in a drink and over the course of a few months could suppress their allergic response,” he said, as per a UWA media release. “We think it’s going to be 100 percent safe. It won’t remove your immune system; it will just take the edge off.”

of sugary drinks a year

LONDON: British teenagers consume sugary drinks equivalent of nearly a bathtub on average in a year, Cancer Research UK reported. The research showed that children aged between 11 and 18 years consume three times more the recommended limit of sugar intake. Sugary drinks have become their main source of added sugar, making up 30 per cent of their total intake, the researchers said. “It’s shocking that teenagers are drinking the equivalent of a bathtub of sugary drinks a year,” said Alison Cox, who is Director at Cancer Research UK — a charity research organization

situated in Britain. According to previous studies, consumption of sugary drinks results in greater weight gain as well as increases body mass index (BMI) — becoming a risk factor for many diseases, such as diabetes and various form of cancers. —IANS

Depression may affect stomach, skin IANS, LONDON

R

esearchers have found that depression in young people is often followed by arthritis and diseases of the digestive system, while skin diseases are common after anxiety disorders. The findings suggest that mental disorders are antecedent risk factors of certain physical diseases in early life, but also vice versa, according to the researchers. “Our results expand the relevance of mental disorders beyond mental to physical health care, and vice versa, supporting the concept of a more integrated mental-physical health care approach, and open new

starting points for early disease prevention and better treatments, with relevance for various medical

disciplines,” the study said. The research group led by Marion Tegethoff in collaboration

with Professor Gunther Meinlschmidt from the University of Basel in Switzerland examined the temporal pattern and relationship between physical diseases and mental disorders in children and young people. They analysed data from a representative sample of 6,483 teenagers from the US aged between 13 and 18. The researchers noted that some physical diseases tend to occur more frequently in children and adolescents if they have previously suffered from certain mental disorders. Likewise, mental disorders tend to occur more frequently after the onset of particular physical diseases.
