As you are aware, this is a highly sensitive issue and causes disquiet to the people of Tamil Nadu who are very proud of and passionate about their linguistic heritage,” she said. Meanwhile, two constituents of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) — the PMK and
the MDMK — have opposed the move on Hindi. PMK founder S. Ramadoss urged the central government to declare all 22 languages listed in Schedule 8 of the Constitution as official languages and put an end to the issue of “Hindi imposition”. He also cited the BJP’s election manifesto which stated that steps would be taken to develop all Indian languages. Expressing shock over the Hindi directive, MDMK leader Vaiko said
it was worrisome since Prime Minister Narendra Modi was using the social media to register his views. Vaiko said the language issue was a very emotional one for the people of Tamil Nadu. He said all the Indian regional languages should be declared as official languages and English should continue till that happens. DMK president M. Karunanidhi was the first to voice his opposition on the issue.
Andhra MLAS for fight against black money IANS, HYDERABAD
T
he Andhra Pradesh legislative assembly unanimously passed a resolution on June 24 backing the central government over the measures being taken by it to eradicate black money. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu moved the resolution, which was later passed. Stating that the menace of black money is destroying the country’s economy, he urged the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to take all possible mea-
sures to make India a corruptionfree country. Naidu told the House that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) always fought against corruption. He assured the members all necessary measures will be taken to root out the corruption.
Lauding the initiative taken by Narendra Modi government to eradicate black money, the chief minister stressed the need for economic, political and administrative reforms. He noted that at the first cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Modi constituted a Special Investigation Team on black money. He hailed the central government’s move in writing to the Swiss government seeking names of those holding bank accounts in that country. Naidu suggested that this money should be used for people’s welfare.

Modi may address US Congress Indian-American groups launch campaign to win more lawmakers’ support for a move to invite Modi to address a joint session of US Congress during his visit ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
L
ong denied a United States visa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may well get the rare honor of addressing a joint session of U.S. Congress when he visits U.S. in September. A suggestion to invite Modi to address a joint session of the House and Senate during his trip has gone to House Speaker John Boehner from Ed Royce, Republican chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee. “As you know, India is a critical partner of the United States. In every aspect — whether it be in political, economic or security relations — the United States has no more important partner in South Asia,” said the letter. “It is not an overstatement to say that the US-India relationship will be one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century,” added the letter, which was also signed by North
Carolina Republican Representative George Holding. “With more than 500 million people voting in the recent Indian election, it was both the world’s largest democratic event and an historic moment for India,” the lawmakers wrote. “The U.S. must now work closely with Prime Minister Modi to strengthen the important relationship between the two countries.” The Speaker’s office has not yet announced a response to the letter, but it’s considered highly likely that Modi may be invited to address a joint session given how U.S. leaders from President Barack Obama down have reached out to the Indian leader since his resounding victory. Meanwhile, Indian-American groups have launched a campaign to win more lawmakers’ support for a move to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address a joint session of U.S. Congress when he visits U.S. in September.

ity likely to become operational by mid to late 2015, the publication said, basing its findings on analysis of satellite imagery and public statements by Indian officials. “We remain fully committed to the terms of the 123 Agreement and to enhancing our strategic relationship,” Psaki said referring to the 2008 landmark India-U.S. civil nuclear deal that ended New Delhi’s nuclear isolation. When reminded that military facilities were explicitly excluded from the Indian civil nuclear agreement, she repeated: “Well, my understanding of it is that nothing provided to India can be used to enhance their military capability. “I’m not certain — obviously, that would be high speculative about this, given there’s only one external report that’s not a reflection of a U.S. Government report,” the U.S. State department spokesperson added.

WASHINGTON: A court has asked the United States Government to respond by July 10 to a Sikh group’s challenge to “suggestion of immunity” to former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh in a human rights violation case. “The United States may have until July 10, 2014, to respond to Plaintiffs’ Response to its suggestion of immunity,” a federal district court said in a June 20 order on a motion filed by the rights group Sikh for Justice (SFJ). Obama administration has sought immunity for Singh saying that it was in “the interest of the U.S.” for the “implementation of its foreign policy and in the conduct of its international relations, to recognize PM Singh’s immunity from this suit while in office.” SFJ has opposed the “suggestion of immunity” on the ground that the Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act (FSIA) does not cover acts committed by for-

t least five people were killed when all 12 coaches and the engine of the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express derailed in Bihar early on June 25, police said. Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi ruled out sabotage although some 500 meters of tracks were found uprooted. At least 13 other people were injured in the accident that took place near the Golden Ganj railway station near Chhapra, some 100 km from here, around 2.30 a.m. when passengers were asleep, railway officials said. In another incident, 12 coaches of a goods train also jumped tracks
Teenaged girl gang-raped in Delhi, four held NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl was abducted, kept hostage at a flat here for one night and gang-raped by three people after they rendered her unconscious by giving her a cold drink laced with sedatives, police said on June 24. The accused trio and an associate have been arrested. Sahil, Vikky and Babar — all in their 20s — along with Akash, who had given the sedativelaced cold drink to the Class 9 girl student inside a mall here, were arrested from their respective hideouts in Delhi. The crime took place on June 22 night and the matter was reported to police on June 23, when the girl reached her house and informed her family members. Police said the girl had gone to a shopping mall in Rajouri Garden area of west Delhi around 8.30p.m. on June 22 along with one of her female friends. In the shopping mall, Akash, who is known to the victim and who works in the mall, offered her a cold drink and molested her, police said.
Prez, PM saddened by Bihar train accident NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 25 expressed grief at the loss of lives in the derailment of the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express in Bihar and called upon authorities to provide relief to victims. “I am saddened to learn about the derailment of a train near Chhapra this morning, in which some persons have lost their lives and many others are injured,” Mukherjee said in a message. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled the loss of lives in the derailment of the train.
near Motihari in East Champaran district in Bihar. No casualties were reported. Train traffic on the route, which links eastern India with the northeast, was paralyzed, East Central Railway spokesman Arvind Kumar Razak said. The cause of the derailment was not clear yet, he added. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and wished the injured speedy recovery. The Prime Minister's Office said he was in touch with Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, who rushed to the accident site. Gowda told the media in Patna that it was too early to comment on the cause of the accident. He
said he would do that only after he meets railway and district officials. Relief and rescue operations were on in full swing, he said. An ex-gratia payment of `200,000 for the families of those killed, `100,000 for the severely injured, and `20,000 for those who received minor injuries was announced by the railway ministry. “We have information of five deaths in the derailment and most of the injured have been admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment,” Bhardawaj said. Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar earlier said some of the injured were taken to hospitals in Chhapra and Patna.

D
elhi University on June 24 witnessed high drama over the reported resignation by its vice chancellor Dinesh Singh even as the UGC said that of the 64 colleges, 57 have agreed to “comply” with its directive to admit students only to the three-year undergraduate course. However, the colleges sought a “clear directive” on the issue. The drama unfolded after joint dean of students’ welfare and media coordinator Malay Neerav announced that Dinesh Singh resigned in the wake of a blazing row with the University Grants Commission (UGC) over the fouryear undergraduate program (FYUP). But hours later, Sangit Ragi, deputy dean for academics, denied that Dinesh Singh had quit. “We have persuaded him not to resign,” he said after meeting the vice chancellor at his residence. Earlier, the UGC issued a statement to the media that “out of the 64 colleges, as many as 57 colleges

The UGC also assured all the students “that no student will be put to any inconvenience and the interest of students will be protected”. The tussle began June 20 when the UGC directed Delhi University to scrap the FYUP and replace it with the original three-year programme. Despite the UGC’s repeated reminders, the university remained non-committal.
‘Too early to blame Maoists for derailment’ PATNA/NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on June 25 said it was too early to blame Maoists for the derailment of the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express in Bihar. “I have spoken directly to rail officials on the spot. The prime minister has been informed regarding all developments. Even he agrees that it is too early to blame the Naxals,” Singh told the media. Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda also said it was too early to comment on the cause of the derailment in Bihar.

I have established my credibility. Intelligence Bureau cleared my name on May 15th. I don't want any character certificate from anyone except myself,” Subramanium told reporters at his office here. Gopal Subramanium along with senior counsel Rohinton Nariman and chief justices of two high courts were recommended for appointment as the judge of the Supreme Court. Need for institutional framework for
appointing governors Shunting out babudom is not a problem but a problem has arisen as some of the governors are resisting calls to voluntarily quit PARMOD KUMAR, NEW DELHI
T
he Narendra Modi government — like any other new dispensation — is offloading the bureaucrats who had served under the Congress led UPA-II and has reportedly asked some governors and other political appointees occupying constitutional positions to step down. Shunting out babudom is not a problem as their positing is at the discretion of the government but a problem has arisen as eight governors are resisting calls to voluntarily quit. While two Governors — B.L.Joshi of Uttar Pradesh and
Shekhar Dutt of Chhattisgarh — have resigned, others are resisting the pressure to voluntarily step down. Politically speaking, it has been a practice in India for the ruling party to rest the political leftouts or political baggage at the Raj Bhawans. On the 41st day after becoming the prime minister on

Governor of West Bengal M. K. Narayanan calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in New Delhi on June 7.
May 22, 2004, Manmohan Singh shunted out four Governors appointed by the predecessor government. They were removed for their political affiliation with the BJP and Article 156 of the constitution was cited remove all the four in one stroke. Article 156 that spells the term of the office of the Governor. Clause (1) of the Article 156 says that a governor shall hold office at the pleasure of the president. What prevents Modi government from doing what was done by the Congress-led UPA. After all
political retribution is integral to real politic. Soon after the governors were removed, a PIL was moved in the Supreme Court which was heard by the constitution bench. The five-judge bench on May 7, 2010 said that a with the change of gvernment at the Centre a Governor could not be removed merely because he is not on the same political or ideological page as that of the government. The court further held that though for removing a governor no reasons had to assigned, this could not be “irrele-
vant, arbitrary, whimsical, or malafide”. If this was so, court would step. The constitution bench said, “A Governor cannot be removed on the ground that he is out of sync with the policies and ideologies of the Union Government or the party in power at the Centre. Nor can he be removed on the ground that the Union Government has lost confidence in him.” It is this pronouncement that is coming in the way of the Modi government doing what Manmohan Singh’s government did.
Modinomics will face ‘socialist’ roadblock Unlike the UPA government, for the first time since the reforms were initiated, Modi government is serious about implementing them, writes the author AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
s Narendra Modi resumes the task of continuing the economic reforms even if it means administering “bitter medicine”, the first dose of which was given on recently, one might have expected the Congress to offer him wholehearted support. Such a gesture would have been normal considering that the former finance minister, P. Chidambaram, admitted that his government made a mistake by tak-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi being introduced to the secretaries to the Government of India before a meeting with them
ing the “foot off the accelerator of reforms” in the last two years before its unlamented demise. However, now that the new prime minister has decided to step on the gas albeit with the warning that the harsh measures under the reforms are likely to make a “dent” in his popularity, at
least Chidambaram should be pleased that his unfinished task is being completed. Instead, the Congress’s negative reaction was confirmed by its criticism of the railway fare and freight hikes although these were proposed by its own government before it left office. This attitude
not only demonstrates a sense of cussedness, but is probably also motivated by the fear that all its profligate programmes are now in danger of being junked. For the first time since the reforms were initiated, the Modi government is serious about implementing them. Unlike
Manmohan Singh, who had been apologetic about the reforms because of resistance from the Left (between 2004 and 2008) and from the left-leaning members of the Congress led by Sonia Gandhi, Modi is likely to go full steam ahead with what the communists decry as a pro-capitalist, “neo-liberal” agenda. This template is expected to include the cutting of subsidies, which were the lifeblood of Sonia Gandhi’s populism, a preference for imposing user charges and removing environmental and other bottlenecks for industrial projects such as the complicated land acquisition process drafted by the previous government. It is difficult to say what his first major initiative will be. The railway fare and freight hikes are an implementation of a pending proposal. The Budget is expected to provide the real roadmap. But, the investors will be wary because it is still uncertain whether Modi’s declarations of intent are tactical or denote a genuine change of stance.

INDIAN MISSIONS IN US scramble to clean up visa mess ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
I
ndian missions in the U.S. have turned to social media like Facebook and Twitter as they scrambled to clear up a visa mess in the wake of a change of contractors for processing consular services. Following complaints galore against the previous service provider BLS International, the Indian embassy here awarded the new contract for providing visa and other consular services to Cox & Kings Global Services from May 21. The switch, however, made the ordeal of travellers to India, particularly from the West Coast, worse in the initial days. Outrage and anger over delays boiled over into fights on at least two occasions at the outsourcing agency’s office in San Francisco last month, according to a media report. “Is the Indian Consulate in SFO complicit in stealing U.S. passport... maybe not but should not the DHS look into this,” tweeted one angry traveller. “There would be no emergency if you bozos would just process a normal visa application,” he said in another tweet. The Indian consulate general in San Francisco reassured those who had applied with the previous service provider BLS International for Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) that their applications have been taken over processing by the mission itself
for processing. Earlier, to deal with the crisis, the Indian Embassy in Washington DC and other Indian consulates in the US started moving own staff to consular service outsourcing centres to help the applicants. The missions also started providing visa services to all Urgent/Emergency cases directly and set up helplines for complaints against the previous and new service provider. The Indian “embassy and consulates taking extraordinary steps to respond to recent Consular complaints. Write to ConsularHelpline@indiagov.org,” said a twitter message. “Senior officers would be visiting the consular service outsourcing centres to monitor the progress in service,” the embassy assured in another.

The court’s verdict prompted British Prime Minister David Cameron to make a public apology for hiring Coulson as his official. He issued a “full and frank apology” to the nation as his former director of communications Coulson was found guilty in the verdict, announced at the Old Bailey, the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales. The jury found Brooks not guilty of conspiracy to hack voicemails, two counts of conspiracy to pay public offi-

Egypt sends Al Jazeera journos to jail CAIRO: Egypt’s newly elected President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on June 24 said that he would not interfere with judicial verdicts handing down prison sentences to three Al Jazeera journalists, media reported. Sisi said Egyptian authorities would respect the independence of the judiciary, Al Jazeera reported. An Egyptian court on June 23 sentenced three Al Jazeera journalists — Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed — to seven years in prison. Greste and Fahmy were sentenced to seven years in prison while
Baher Mohamed was sentenced to an additional three years for possessing arms. The three journalists were arrested in December last year in Cairo as they covered the aftermath of former president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster last July. The prosecution said Greste, Al Jazeera’s east Africa correspondent, and his Egypt bureau colleagues aided the Brotherhood and produced false news reports on the situation in Egypt. “We will not interfere in judicial rulings,” Sisi said. “We must respect judicial rulings,” the President said.

woman was killed and two flight stewards were injured on June 24 night when some unidentified gunmen opened fire on a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane arriving from Riyadh at Peshawar’s Bacha Khan airport, a leading Pakistani daily reported. The PIA Boeing PK-756 with 196 passengers onboard was fired upon while landing at the airport,
itary Hospital (CMH). Police officials and PIA spokesperson Mashood Tajwar have confirmed the incident and the casualties. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shah Farman said that it was difficult to ascertain as to from where the aircraft was being fired upon. He said that firing incidents like this are usual occurrence in the area. Senior Superintendent of Police
The plane was hit by six bullets, police said, killing the woman and narrowly missing the captain. The Dawn reported, adding that three people were injured of which one succumbed to her wounds. The plane was hit by six bullets, police said, killing the woman and narrowly missing the captain. At least one bullet struck the plane’s engine. Police and security forces have cordoned off the airport premises and launched a search operation to arrest the culprits behind the incident. Injured flight stewards, identified as Majid and Ijaz Chaudhry, have been shifted to Combined Mil-
(SSP) Operations Najeebur Rehman said the police have launched a search operation in Pishtakara and the surroundings area. The suspected attack follows a major Taliban assault on Karachi airport earlier this month that killed at least 32 people. The security was beefed up around the area amidst Pakistani military’s ongoing operation Zarb-iAzb against militants in North Waziristan Agency, one of the country’s seven tribal agencies next to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Around 47 militants killed in Pakistan air strikes
ISLAMBAD: Pakistani fighter jets on June 24 bombed hideouts of militants in two tribal regions killing 47 terrorists, the military said. An army spokesman said 27 terrorists were killed in jet aircraft strikes in Mir Ali, a core town in North Waziristan, and surrounding areas Tuesday afternoon, Xinhua reported. A total of 11 terrorist hideouts and huge cache of arms and ammunition were also destroyed. The security forces have intensified airstrikes in North Waziristan after most of the residents have left their homes. The official said that nearly 500,000 people have been evacuated from the region where the military launched a major offensive against the local and foreign militants this month. The security forces earlier foiled a vehicle-borne suicide attack attempt in Spinwom area of North Waziristan Agency.
Over 400,000 uprooted in Pakistan GENEVA: Over 400,000 people have been displaced amid the on-going Pakistani military offensive against Taliban militants in the northern parts of the country, with figures expected to rise, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on June 23. Citing official registration figures, UNHCR’s spokesman Dan McNorton said in a press conference here that as many as 435,429 people, including some 183,000 children, have escaped fighting from combat zones in North Waziristan since mid-June, Xinhua reported. Most families have sought refuge in different parts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in north-western Pakistan, and almost all the internally displaced people (IDPs) are being hosted by local communities, McNorton said. “The government of Pakistan and our UN and humanitarian community part-
ners expect up to half a million people could be displaced by the current military operations,” said McNorton. He warned that this would bring the total number of displaced people from the tribal regions of the country to 1.5 million (including 930,000 uprooted in various waves since 2009). The UN refugee agency and partners called for full and immediate access to the affected populations so as to allow the delivery of humanitarian aids to those in need.
Nepal to bring back workers from Iraq KATHMANDU: Four days after a group of kidnapped Nepalis, along with other foreign citizens, were released in Iraq the Nepalese government on June 24 decided to dispatch a high level task force to Iraq to bring them back home safely, officials said. A total of 44 foreign nationals, including a group of Nepali citizens, were held hostage on June 17 by tribal groups in
northern Iraq. They were released on June 21. Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mahendra Bahadur Pandey on June 23 formed a high level team to bring home those kidnapped. Nepal has banned its migrant workers from going to Iraq and government officials estimate more than 2,000 Nepalis are still working there.

Salman Khan ‘Kick-’ starts with ‘Jumme ki raat’ The superstar will be seen letting his hair down in the track from the film ‘Kick’ which sets for Eid release IANS, MUMBAI

uperstar Salman Khan on June 20 unveiled Jumme ki raat from his forthcoming film Kick, and says that the song is not similar to Jumma chumma dede, which he really enjoys watching. Jumma chumma dede is a song from 1991 multi-starrer Hum and the chartbuster was picturized on Amitabh Bachchan and Kimi Katkar. When asked is the song similar to Jumma chumma dede, Salman said: “I knew this...I knew somebody would come up with this question. Whenever this Amitabh Bachchan song comes on TV, I enjoy it. I watch the entire song.” But he added that Jumma chumma dede “has been shot differently. The song has been choreographed by Ahmed Khan.” The superstar will be seen letting his hair down in the track. ‘It was difficult to say no to Sujoy’ NEW DELHI: Mumbai: Actor Vidya Balan, who gave a stellar performance in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, says it was tough for her to say no to the director for his new film Durga Rani Singh. “I am a little sad I couldn’t work in this project because we made Kahaani together and we were like parents of Kahaani. It was a very difficult decision for me to say no (to Durga Rani Singh, but I was not keeping well so I couldn’t do it. I had no option,” said the National Award winning talent. After Vidya turned down the offer, Kangana Ranaut was approached for the lead role in Ghosh’s film. But even she refused it. Vidya says that after the success of The Dirty Picture, a story inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, she was offered biopics almost every week. “Three offers have come my way, but I have not accepted anything,” said the 36-year-old.

It is being readied for Eid release. Kick marks Sa l m a n’s annual ‘Eid release’, which has been lucky for him as his previous hits Bodyguard, Dabangg and Dabangg 2 opened on Eid in the past. ‘Humshakals’: Hum shock-alls reeling under the farce Film: “Humshakals”; Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Ram Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh, Bipasha Basu, Tamnannah Bhatia, Esha Gupta; Directed by Sajid Khan; Rating: ** (2 stars)

ammanah Bhatia makes so many faces in every frame you wonder if she’s auditioning for a film against cocaine addiction while pretending to be in a comedy about three sets of identical characters wackily whopping it up. Bipasha Basu who plays one of the female misleads.... sorry, leads, in the comedy of ghastly errors, has gone on record to say she was extremely disturbed by the end-result of this film. So, to be honest, are we. And the
end that Bipasha talks about seems to take forever to reach as we watch three grown-up ostensibly evolved actors lapse into a collective state of incurable retardation.
Humshakals seem to be designed for the mentally challenged. Even they would cringe at the way the two protagonists Ashok and Kumar (Ashok Kumar, gedddit?) are
depicted. Moronic and misconceived, the duo seems to revel in crass mediocrity. As inmates in a mental asylum in London(no less), Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh raise the ante for lunacy to a point where sanity begins to seem like a state of mind invented to make us believe there is a world, a relatively sane one, outside what comic filmmakers in Bollywood consider to be funny. To be fair, Sajid Khan’s new brainwave replete with triple roles for its three male leads plus a drag act each in the second half which is genuinely funny, is as obnoxious in treatment as the slapstick comedies Aof Rohit Shetty or Anees Bazmi. I suspect the actors must have had a whale of a time shooting the scenes.

Preity, Ness should be left alone: Shatrughan Sinha
Preity spills all in police statement MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Preity Zinta revealed the entire sordid episode involving her and her former boyfriend and business partner, industrialist Ness Wadia, in her detailed two-hour statement to Mumbai police, according to official sources. On June 24 night, she reiterated the allegations in her original June 12 statement detailing how Wadia had screamed abuses at her, insulted her, and attacked her character publicly though he was repeatedly warned to mind his language. Preity said this demeaned her dignity as a woman and humiliated her in full public view, officials said. As part of the statement recording, she showed the investigators the seats they had occupied in the Wankhede Stadium during the IPL match May 30 as owners of the Kings XI Punjab team. The police conducted a 'spot panchnama'. Accompanied by her brother, Zinta took the police to the spots in the stadium which included 35 seats in the air-conditioned enclosure and another 50 in the general area which were reserved for the team owners. The police said that they sought certain clarifications from her on the entire episode and had selected the Wankhede Stadium to get a clear understanding of the circumstances and reconstruct the sequence of events unfolding May 30 evening. Zinta's complete statement would now be corroborated with that of eight others already recorded in the past few days before police decide the future course of action. Another around 14 witnesses named by her, including some foreigners, common friends of Zinta and Wadia, stadium staffers and others, are likely to be questioned by police over the next few days.
MUMBAI : Actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha took to micro-blogging site Twitter to express his views on the ongoing feud between bollywood actress Preity Zinta and her former boyfriend Ness Wadia saying it is their “internal matter” and they should be “left alone”.In a series of posts, Sinha shared his views on the entire episode. “I know both of them & they seem to be nice people,& I do not see any reason to speculate on possible angles in this unfortunate development,” he wrote. The actress on June 12 lodged a complaint against Wadia of molestation. According to sources, Preity has accused Wadia of grabbing her hand and abusing her during a cricket match in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. “No matter how weak and defensive the Mumbai police may have become after 26/11. the investigations and the legal process will take its own course and truth shall prevail. We shall wait and watch. “Meanwhile my best wishes to messy Ness and love to pretty Preity Zinta. God bless! @realpreityzinta,” he tweeted.

MOM SUES ORGANIZERS FOR SON’S DEATH DURING OBSTACLE RACE BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HARLESTON (W.VA.) — A Maryland Indian American woman whose son drowned last year along an obstacle course in West Virginia has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the organizers of the Tough Mudder event. The lawsuit filed by Mita Sengupta alleges Tough Mudder LLC failed to follow basic safety precautions that led to the April 2013 death of Avishek Sengupta, 28, of Ellicott City, Maryland. The death occurred a day after he was pulled from the water pit on the “Walk the Plank” obstacle at the Peacemaker National Training Center in Glengary. The obstacle involves climbing up a wooden wall to a platform, then jumping 15 feet into a water pit. A medical examiner ruled he drowned. Peacemaker National, event water rescue coordinator Amphibious Medics and corporate sponsor General Mills, also named in the lawsuit, declined comment, along with rescue diver Travis Pittman, who didn’t have a listed telephone number. It marked the first fatality for Brooklyn, New York-based Tough Mudder, which debuted in 2010 and holds dozens of events worldwide each year.
Avishek Sengupta
Tough Mudder participants must be at least 18 years old and sign a liability waiver. T h e l a w s u i t s a i d i n re s p o n s e to complaints on social media from participants, event organizers took steps to reduce wait times and increase the flow of participants through the obstacle, including abandoning or failing to adopt certain safety measures that led to Sengupta’s death. The lawsuit said the obstacle was
overcrowded, had no lane divider to prevent participants from hitting each other after jumping, had no system of tracking participants from the time they jumped until the time they exited the pool. It also said there was only one volunteer at the obstacle. “The lone volunteer atop the platform ... was ordering participants to jump off the platform while his back was turned to the water, so that he had no idea whether
or not the pool was clear of participants below,’’ the lawsuit said. The lawsuit said immediately after Sengupta left the platform, a woman jumped onto Sengupta in the pool and the collision prevented him from surfacing. No safety personnel noticed. The platform volunteer allowed three additional jumps. An investigation report previously released by the Berkeley County sheriff ’s department concluded there was no indication Sengupta had been struck before or after entering the pit. Citing witness accounts, the report said members of Sengupta’s group became frantic when he didn’t emerge, and several minutes elapsed before he was pulled from the pit’s cold, muddy waters. The lawsuit said Pittman wasn’t wearing his rescue equipment when he was summoned and didn’t enter the water until more than two minutes after Sengupta went under. Following the death, Tough Mudder said safety procedures on the course were closely examined. Additional safety rails were added to “Walk the Plank’’ and lifeguards changed their focus to specific areas of the pit. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and was filed April 18.
Pratishtha Khanna – an inspiring champion of change Man held with cocaine BY A STAFF WRITER
W
ASHINGTON, DC -Pratishtha Khanna, an activist for undocumented children of illegal immigrants, was among ten young adults honored by the White House as “Champions of Change” “These Champions distinguished themselves through their community involvement and the hard work they put into helping other members of their academic and professional communities succeed,” the White House said in press release. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) senior, was a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipient, as are all the other recipients. The DACA program is designed to shield young undocumented immigrants from being deported. New Delhi-born Khanna, came to the US as a 10-year-old with her family but remained “undocumented” until she got her DACA status in 2012. That allowed her to get a social security number and apply for her driver’s permit and hold a job.
Pratishtha Khanna
“DACA has allowed me to live a dignified life. My parents unfortunately were not able to experience the little luxuries of living in the country; basic labor rights, eight hour work days, documented minimum wage, and benefits,” Khanna told “However, with DACA… not only I fulfill my responsibility as an inhabitant
by paying taxes and such but also am able to claim basic humane working rights.” Khanna is involved in immigrant rights movements like API (Asian & Pacific Islander) Youth Convening-DACA Collaborative planning committee and the Maryland Dream Youth Committee. She is also a member of Dreamers for DREAMers student organization at UMBC. According to the Dreamers for DREAMers website, those who qualified for DACA are considered DREAMers. “I wish that through dialogue and discussion campus communities around the nation can harbor more opportunities to make education access easier for deserving undocumented high school graduates so that the transition from primary to higher studies is easier,” says Khanna, a proponent of providing DREAMers’ information and resources to address their financial, career, and employment needs. Khanna will graduate in May with a B.S. in Biology but will continue to balance her advocacy work and her job as an Emergency room medical scribe and will pursue a Certified Nursing Assistant Program at Howard Community College.
25-year jail term for child sex abuse BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW YORK-A federal judge in New York sentenced an IndianAmerican man to 25 years in jail for sexually exploiting a child who possibly lived in the same house. He was caught despite wiping out evidence of his sexual exploits from his cell phone and emails. On June 23, Judge J. Paul Oetken of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York sentenced Narendra Tulsiram, 50, of Manhattan to 25 years in prison. The charges against Tulsiram included sexually exploiting a child, as well as transporting and possessing images of child pornography.
He had pleaded guilty in April 2013. In addition to the prison term, Judge Oetken sentenced Tulsiram to a lifetime of supervised release. He must also register as a sex offender. “For five years, Narendra Tulsiram preyed on his minor victim – sexually abusing and extorting her. Today’s sentence ensures Tulsiram will pay for the innocence he stole and be prevented from harming others,” U.S. Attorney for Manhattan is quoted saying in a release from his office. Court documents filed in the case record that from 2006 through September 2011, Tulsiram sexually abused the minor victim. The abuse began when she was just 13 years
old. From 2008 through September 2011, Tulsiram took sexually explicit photographs of his abuse of the child. Finally, in November 2011, after the child, now an 18 year old teen, resisted Tulsiram’s requests for more sex, he used his e-mail account to send sexually explicit photographs of her to her e-mail account, threatening her he would send the photos to others if she did not give in to his demands. Following his arrest, Tulsiram’s cell phone and e-mail account were searched under a warrant and through forensics, the sexually explicit photos were recovered, as were the threatening emails.

89-YR-OLD HELD FOR AIDING NAZI CRIMES BY A STAFF WRITER
A
n 89-year-old Philadelphia man has been ordered held without bail after his arrest on charges of aiding and abetting the deaths of 216,000 Jewish men, women, and children during his time as a guard at the notorious Nazi death camp Auschwitz. Johann “Hans” Breyer, a retired toolmaker, has been arrested outside his home in Northeast Philadelphia. He spent the night in custody and appeared frail during a detention hearing in federal court, wearing an olive green prison jumpsuit and carrying a cane. Each count represents a trainload of Nazi prisoners from Hungary, Germany and Czechoslovakia who were killed at Auschwitz-Birkenau between May 1944 and October 1944, the documents said. “There was a heightened execution of Jewish deportees brought to the camp,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Foulkes. “Most of them were women, children and people with illness.” Prosecutors say that Breyer, 18 at the time, served in the so-called Death’s Head Guard Battalion at the camp.
Attorney Dennis Boyle argued his client is too infirm to be detained pending a hearing on his possible extradition to Germany. Breyer has mild dementia and heart issues and has previously suffered strokes, Boyle said. “Mr. Breyer is not a threat to anyone,” said Boyle. “He’s not a flight risk.” But Magistrate Judge Timothy Rice ruled the detention center was equipped to care for Breyer, who appeared to comprehend questions about the nature of the hearing.
Breyer has admitted he was a guard at Auschwitz in occupied Poland during World War II, but he claims he was stationed outside of the AuschwitzBirkenau death camp part of the complex and had nothing to do with the wholesale slaughter of about 1.5 million Jews and others behind the gates. Thomas Walther, a former federal prosecutor with the special office that investigates Nazi war crimes in Germany, now represents family members of some of Breyer’s alleged victims as co-plaintiffs in
Ringleader held again: Medicaid fraud BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EWARK (NJ) — Rehan “Ray” Zuberi was using a multimillion-dollar Medicaid fraud scheme to finance a life of boundless luxury, and he liked to pay with cash. Inside Zuberi’s 9,000-square-foot mansion in Boonton Township, he had $100,000 in cash, and he paid for a 2014 Lamborghini with a $400,000 casher’s check, according to Deputy Attorney General Christopher Ruzich. Officials explained to journalists in Newark how Zuberi’s Diagnostic Imaging Affiliates allegedly operated and how “Operation Rayscam” came about. The scheme came to a crashing halt for the 45-year-old Zuberi and 12 associates, including his wife, father and two brothers-in-law. More than 100 investigators from the state Attorney General’s Office and other agencies seized the enterprise’s assets, which also included a Ferrari, a Rolls Royce and two other luxury cars, along with expensive imaging equipment used at 10 diagnostic facilities across central and northern New Jersey. The accused allegedly paid doctors to send patients to the offices for MRIs, PET scans and other tests that were not necessary, thereby bilking Medicaid of millions. The scheme allegedly paid out more than $300,000 in kickbacks. In return, the 30,000 fraudulent Medicaid claims filed over five years reeled in $8 million. The kickbacks to chiropractors and physicians were paid using checks from “shell” corporations, and ranged from thousands to tens of thousands of dollars apiece. Five alleged ringleaders, including Zuberi, are charged with first-degree racketeering. He and his wife, Humara
Rehan “Ray” Zuberi
Paracha, were charged with multiple second- and third-degree counts, including money laundering, authorities said. The couple is also accused of not paying their income taxes since 2009. Also accused of “controlling” the operation and charged with first-degree racketeering were Baber Eskar, 49, of Pompton Lakes, Zuberi’s close associate and chief operating officer of DIA; Rohit Gupta, president of the Edison DIA and owner of a medical billing company that processed the insurance claims, and Faisal Paracha of Woodbridge, the 30-year-old brother-in-law who was involved in the West Orange location. Others charged were: Nawab Zuberi of Boonton, Rehan’s 73-year-old father;
Salman Siddiqui of Jefferson, Rehan Zuberi’s 37-year-old brother-in-law; Felix Clarin, 44, of Florham Park, who ran the Jersey City location; Judith DeLeon of Bloomfield, 50, who managed the Hackensack office; and Natividada Urena of Clifton, 33, who ran the Union City location. Abid Syed, 37, of East Hanover, 25-year-old Thomas Grecco of Clifton, and Jose Lopez, 51, of Passaic, were charged with various counts as well, authorities said. It was not the first time Zuberi has been accused of Medicaid fraud. In 1998, Zuberi pleaded guilty to defrauding Medicaid — and was sentenced to six years in state prison. After less than a year behind bars, he was released under a form of supervised release. Last week, Zuberi and his associates appeared for bail hearings in Superior Court in Morristown. Deputy Attorney General Ruzich requested increases for Zuberi and the four others accused of leading the operation, and the defense attorneys asked for decreases. Judge Robert Gilson maintained bail at $1 million for Zuberi and $300,000 for Eskar, Gupta and Faisal Paracha, changing the bail only for Zuberi’s wife, Humara Paracha, lowering it from $300,000 to $250,000.They remain in the Morris County jail. Paracha’s attorney, E. Alexander Jardines, pointed out that the couple has three children and both of their parents are now in prison. He requested the bail be lowered to $100,000. Ruzich, asking that Zuberi’s bail be increased to $2 million, pointed out that he was born in Pakistan, is not a US citizen, has business interests in Pakistan and China and “at this point has no employment to go back to.”
the case. He called for a speedy extradition. “The German court has to find late justice for the crimes of Breyer and for the victims and their sons and daughters as co-plaintiffs,” says Walther. “It is late, but not too late.” Prosecutors in Weiden could not be reached for comment Wednesday. Their investigation comes after years of failed U.S. efforts to have Breyer stripped of his American citizenship and deported. A court ruling in 2003 allowed him to stay in the United States, mainly on the grounds that he had joined the SS as a minor and could therefore not be held legally responsible for participation in it. His American citizenship stems from the fact his mother was born in the US.; she later moved to Europe, where Breyer was born. During Breyer’s arrest last week, he asked the marshals to retrieve papers in his home that document his right to stay in the US. Breyer’s wife and two grandsons attended the hour-long hearing in Philadelphia..His extradition hearing was scheduled for August 21.
Charges against Paterson councilman rejected
Ward 2 councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman

C
LIFTON (NJ) — Criminal charges of harassment filed against a Paterson councilman were dismissed last week by a municipal judge in Clifton. Last June, supporters of council hopeful Maidal Islam alleged that Ward 2 councilman Mohammed Akhtaruzzaman harassed them at a June 8 community meeting in which violence erupted between two factions of Paterson’s Bangladeshi community. Three men, Joyed Rohim, Rasel Ahmed and Nuruzzaman Suhel, claimed in court filings that the councilman refused to let them take refuge into his car as a brawl broke out. They alleged that Akhtaruzzaman, who organized the meeting in the hopes of planning the upcoming Bangladeshi Heritage Parade, falsely claimed they had weapons and ordered his supporters to beat Shuel. The charges against Akhtaruzzaman were all dismissed, though charges against others allegedly involved in the brawl are still pending.

BY A STAFF WRITER
nthusiastic Lake County Indians celebrated ‘Father’s Day’ in a Hindu Way with all the religious rituals when the people in different countries were celebrating it in their own way by giving gifts, spending quality time, and having sumptuous lunch or dinner with fathers. The motive of the temple is to celebrate all events in a traditional way so that the younger generation can learn and preserve our age old culture, values, and traditions. Colorfully dressed devotees with their young children gathered in the temple with a special spirit on this event celebrating fatherhood. Devi and Sankat Haran Chaturthi Abhishekam to Lord Ganesh were performed by Pandit Joshi Ji with all the rituals and mantras. Niles cops educate seniors about scams
T
BY A STAFF WRITER
he Niles police have put together a program to educate seniors about scam artists who prey on the elderly by teaching seniors how to protect themselves. The department completed the first round of the Senior Crime Reduction Awareness Measures Program on May 22. The next class is set for September 8 at 10 am at the Niles Senior Center. Seniors who attended monthly classes during the past eight months learned about such topics as identity theft, confidence scams, pigeon drops and bank examiner scams, home repair fraud, ruse-entry burglary, burglary, personal safety and driving safety. “Mayor [Andrew] Przybylo saw a need for this in his experience with crimes targeting the elderly,” Sgt. Robert Tornabene said. “He was concerned. He made one of the trademarks of his campaign that he was going to try to do as much as he could to eradicate crimes against seniors.” Przybylo asked the police department to come up with a comprehensive program to educate seniors. In addition to the monthly sessions, the department sends out a followup letter to participants that reviews the material and presents any new scams as they are uncovered. The monthly sessions include role-playing to enable seniors to learn how to cope with scammers. “We had a door donated by Home Depot. We would bring a senior up and have them be home and go through the whole scene with somebody trying to talk their way into the senior’s home,” Tornabene said. Additionally, the department provides seniors with reminder stickers for both the door and the phone with a checklist of what to do. Participants will also get yard signs to raise awareness of the program. Currently the follow-up letters go only to those who participate in the program. Tornabene said there are about 7,500 seniors in the village, according to Census figures. In addition to the classes, Tornabene said the department has taken presentations to various men’s clubs and women’s groups. “We’re doing a lot of outreach to get the information they need [out there] without added a lot of cost,” said Tornabene, who began putting the program together last August.
Melodious bhajans sung by Anu Gupta, Rita Patel, and other devotees created a spiritual atmosphere in the temple. A group of young boys and girls honored more than a hundred fathers as living Gods on this earth by washing their feet and offering them with tilak, pushpakshata, Arati, uttariya, fruits, and a special poem ‘Our Gratitude to Fathers’ written by Geetha Patil.
All children and fathers felt happy and jubilant on this occasion. This celebration gave an opportunity for children to recognize and appreciate the social, economic, cultural, and spiritual contributions that fathers and father figures make to their lives. Both priests blessed Kumar Natesiyer and his wife Madhumati for their Silver Jubilee wedding anniversary. Pt. Joshi Ji in his Ashirvachanam
to devotees, and especially to youngsters, stated that fathers’ day was not the one day of the year when dad gets to be Father of the Year or Star of the House–for a day. He said a mantra from Taittiriya Upanishad, “maatru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava, aachaarya devo bhava, atithi devo bhava” which conveys the “code of conduct” for Hindu society. It means everyone should pay respects to Mother, Father, Guru and Guest since they are all forms of God. Here Atithi, meaning guest, includes every other person in the world. This sloka suggests that oneness and equality comes into existence by regarding every individual as the supreme power. Those who practice this mantra in their lives obtain happiness, comfort, and a contented life. Pt. Joshi Ji thanked every devotee and children who participated in this meaningful event to develop paternal bonds, and recognize the influence of fathers in society. Maha Mangalarati was followed by delicious Maha Prasadam to all devotees.
Indian guilty of murders of wife, 2 kids BY A STAFF WRITER
P
ONTIAC (MI) — An Indian American computer scientist who fled to his native India after the 2008 slayings of his wife and two children in their suburban Detroit home has been convicted of first-degree murder in their deaths. An Oakland Circuit Court jury on June 12 returned the verdict in the case of Lakshminivasa Nerusu, 46, who was arrested in February 2013. He testified during the trial that he “blacked out” and didn’t remember what happened the day of the killings and must have been insane. Defense lawyer Lawrence Kaluzny said Nerusu was insane at the time of the killings. “There is no getting around that the cause of those deaths was my client, Mr. Nerusu,” Kaluzny told jurors when the trial started. “In spite of what he did, he is still entitled to a fair trial.” Under Michigan laws, Nerusu will receive a mandatory sentence of life in
Lakshminivasa Nerusu
prison without possibility of parole. Judge Nanci Grant scheduled his sentencing for July 3. Jayalakshmi Nerusu, 37, the couple’s
14-year-old daughter Tejasvi and their 12-year-old son Siva were killed on October 13, 2008. The police in Novi checking on the family’s welfare found their bodies two weeks later. Authorities said domestic problems preceded the deaths. According to prosecutors, Lakshminivasa Nerusu first stabbed his wife 59 times, then waited several hours for his children to arrive home from school. He slit the throat of his daughter after she got off a school bus, and 40 minutes later slashed his son’s throat, prosecutors said. “The man who was supposed to love them, care for them and protect them was the same man who brought their young lives to an horrific end,” Assistant Prosecutor Tricia Dare said before testimony began in the case. Nerusu, an unemployed software programmer, fled to India the day after the killings but was arrested and extradited in 2013.
Family sees foul play in death of Indian student BY A STAFF WRITER
C
hicago (IL) — The family of a 19-year-old Indian American student, who was found dead in February under mysterious circumstances in Carbondale, Illinois, has alleged foul play and disputed the cause of his death given by the police. The results of a second autopsy commissioned by Pravin Varughese’s family showed that the Southern Illinois University student died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, even as authorities maintain that he died of hypothermia with no evidence of foul play. The body of Varughese, of Morton Grove, was found on February 18 in a wooded area in Carbondale about a week after he went missing. The findings by independent forensic pathologist Ben Margolis raise more questions in the mysterious death of Varughese. The sophomore criminal justice major
suffered four different blows to the face and head, all of which could not have been caused by a single impact, such as falling on a rock or hitting a tree. Varughese’s body also showed an injury
to his forearm and his left thigh, Margolis said, as well as bruises below his knees and scratch marks that could have been caused by the difficult terrain. Margolis, however, stopped short of issuing a determination of how Varughese sustained the head injuries, saying he still needed to see initial police and coroner records. “The cause of death is blunt force injury, but the cause of those injuries is pending further investigation,” he said. Varughese’s mother, meanwhile, said Margolis’ report gives credence to her questions of how authorities have handled her son’s death investigation. “It gives me a feeling that I’m not crazy,” she said. “The instinct as a mother, and the knowledge as a nurse, I think it paid off.” County coroner Thomas Kupferer had said that the forensic pathologist who performed the initial autopsy did not indicate any blunt force injuries.

Higgs boson may decay directly into fermions Previously, the Higgs particle could only be detected through its decay into bosons
IANS, LONDON
F
or the first time, scientists from the CMS experiment on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN have succeeded in finding evidence for the direct decay of the Higgs boson elementary particle into fermions. Previously, the Higgs particle could only be detected through its decay into bosons. The Higgs boson particle is an elementary particle initially theorized in 1964, whose discovery was announced at CERN on July 4, 2012. “This is a major step forward,” said professor Vincenzo Chiochia from University of Zurich whose
group was involved in analysing the data. “We now know that the Higgs particle can decay into both bosons and fermions, which means we can exclude certain theories predicting that the Higgs particle does not couple to fermions,” he said. As a group of elementary particles, fermions form matter while bosons act as force carriers between fermions. According to the standard model of particle physics, the interaction strength between the fermions and the Higgs field must be proportional to their mass. “This prediction was confirmed... a strong indication that the particle discovered in 2012 actually behaves like the Higgs
particle proposed in the theory,” said Chiochia. The researchers analysed the data gathered at the LHC between 2011 and 2012, combining the Higgs decays into bottom quarks and tau leptons, both of which belong to the fermion particle group. Three different processes were studied, whereby the UZH researchers analysed the Higgs decay into taus. Because the Higgs particle is extremely shortlived, it cannot be detected directly, but rather only via its decay products. The bottom quarks and taus, however, have a long enough lifetime to be measured directly in the CMS experiment’s pixel detector.
Molecular footballs
may revolutionize electronics n the 2018 World Cup in Russia, football-shaped molecules could change your experience of watching a match for the better as the new molecular electronic components could lead to highly efficient and low power-consuming devices. Scientists have reported a new method that takes the concept of amphiphilic assembly one step further, and applies it to a completely new set of hydrophobic molecules,
discovery is the field of ‘molecular electronics’. These carbon-based electronics could provide a cheaper alternative to traditional silicon technology and allow for flexible hand held devices for many functions, including smartphones and tablets for watching TV. One example is a molecule shaped like a football but with a long tail. The amphiphile has been tailor made from ‘bucky balls’ - footballshaped molecules made up of 60
with no water-loving part to them. These new “hydrophobic amphiphiles” still have different ‘parts’, but the assembly process relies on more subtle interactions. The research was carried out by an international team of researchers led by Martin Hollamby from Keele University, Britain and Takashi Nakanishi from National Institute for Materials Science, Japan. Together they showed that hydrophobic amphiphiles — molecules with two ends — can still assemble into extended structures in much the same way as conventional amphiphiles. One area that could be significantly impacted by this
carbon atoms (C60) which are chemically modified by attaching a much longer ‘tail’ made up of chains of carbon atoms. “Changing the chemistry of the chains can even lead to gels made of bundled C60 wires that have a measurable photoconductivity,” Hollamby said. A great variety of different structures can be produced just by making small changes to the chemical structure and the additives (solvent or C60) used. The new molecular electronic components could result in higher efficiency and lower power consumption simply by optimising how the molecules interact with each other.

Beware! Rote learning may lead to false memories IANS, NEW YORK
I
n what could highlight the limitations of learning by repetitions, researchers have found that while repetition enhances the factual content of memories, it can reduce the amount of detail stored with those memories, a recipe for forming false memories. “For a more enriching and lasting learning experience through which nuance and detail are readily recalled, other memory techniques should be used to comple-
25
ment repetition,” said Michael Yassa, neurobiologist at University of California, Irvine, U.S. These findings do not discredit the practice of repetitive learning, but pure repetition alone has limitations, he noted. In the study, student participants were asked to look at pictures either once or three times. They were then tested on their memories of those images. The researchers found that multiple views increased factual recall but actually hindered the participants’ ability to reject similar “impostor” pictures.
This suggests that the details of those memories may have been shaken loose by repetition. This discovery supports Competitive Trace Theory which posits that the details of a memory become more subjective the more they are recalled and can compete with bits of other similar memories. The scientists hypothesized that this may even lead to false memories, akin to a brain version of the telephone game where people take turns whispering a message into the ear of the next person in line and by the time the last person speaks it out loud, the message has radically changed. The study appeared in the journal Learning & Memory. Rote memorization isn't a bad thing, per se. But you might want to use other memory methods.

Anti-Hindi protests rocked Tamil Nadu during the 1960s

ll major political parities in Tamil Nadu, including two BJP allies, came out strongly against the government order to use Hindi in social media, branding it “Hindi imposition”. A day after the DMK cried foul, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the Home Ministry directive “makes the use of Hindi mandatory and English optional” and so can’t be accepted. The Home Ministry has ordered that officials should now use only Hindi or Hindi and English with
the former getting prominence on social media like Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Citing the Official Languages Rules of 1976, Jayalalithaa said communications from a central government office to a state or to any office or person in states in “Region C” shall be in English. “Social media are not only accessible to all persons on the internet but meant to be a means of communication to persons in all parts of

The solution will also enable Fondep to expand beyond micro-credit to distribute its range of micro-insurance products to its clients in urban and rural areas. “The software solution will be deployed in French, underlining Finacle’s readiness for the French-speaking North African banking sector,” Infosys regional head for advanced markets and global accounts Amit Dua said. The deployment of the solution will be supported by specialist teams located across the Infosys global net-

Hearing ability mend by stemcells
Scientists have found a gene named Snf2h, for the apt growth of the brain. IANS, TORONTO
R
esearchers have discovered the gene that is responsible for the proper development of a healthy cerebellum. The gene called ‘Snf2h’ is responsible for the development of the cerebellum - the master control centre in the brain for balance, fine motor control and complex physical movements. It also had difficulty walking,
balancing and coordinating its movements, something called cerebellar ataxia that is a component of many neuro-degenerative diseases. “As these cerebellar stem cells divide, on their journey toward becoming specialised neurons, this master gene is responsible for deciding which genes are turned on and which genes are packed tightly away,” said David Picketts, senior scientist at Ottawa Hospital Research Institute in Canada. “Without Snf2h there to keep
things organised, genes that should be packed away are left turned on, while other genes are not properly activated.” “This disorganisation within the cell’s nucleus results in formation of a neuron that does not perform very well,” Picketts added. The cerebellum contains roughly half the neurons found in the brain. It also develops in response
to external stimuli. “Without Snf2h, not enough cerebellar neurons are produced, and the ones that are produced do not respond and adapt as well to external signals. “They also show a progressively disorganised gene expression profile that results in cerebellar ataxia and the premature death of the animal,” said Picketts.

Anti-depressants during pregnancy risky for kids
IANS, MELBOURNE
TORONTO: Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to depression, but women who take anti-depressants during pregnancy may be predisposing their infants to Type 2 diabetes and obesity later in life. Maternal use of a class of anti-depressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs increase risk of obesity and diabetes in children, says a study. “Our study has found that maternal antidepressant use may also be a contributing factor to the obesity and diabetes epidemic and it is due to lifestyle and availability of high calorie foods and reduced physical activity farther resulting in increased fat accumulation and inflammation in the liver of the adult offspring,” said Alison Holloway, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University in Canada.
S
taying in a cool environment may help you stay fit as researchers have discovered that such environment stimulates growth of brown fat that burns energy to generate heat and may protect people from diabetes and obesity. Ambient temperatures can influence the growth or loss of brown fat in people, cool environments stimulate growth, warm environments loss, the findings showed. Previous studies have shown that people with plentiful brown fat stores tend to be lean and have low
blood sugar levels. For the study, endocrinologist Paul Lee from Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Australia recruited five healthy men and exposed them to four-month-long periods of defined temperature — within the range from 19 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius.

NEW YORK: In a ray of hope for patients with hearing impairment, scientists have found that spiral ganglion stem cells present in the inner ear can be used to restore hearing ability. Selfrenewing properties exhibited by spiral ganglion stem cells make them a promising source of replacement cells for therapies designed to regenerate the neural structures of the inner ear. Spiral ganglion cells are essential for hearing and their irreversible degeneration in the inner ear is common in most types of hearing loss. Now, new evidence in a mouse model shows that spiral ganglion stem cells are capable of self-renewal and can be grown and induced to differentiate into mature spiral ganglion cells as well as neurons and glial cells. The findings appeared in the journal BioResearch Open Access.

They lived their normal lives during the day and returned each night to stay for at least 10 hours in a temperatureregulated room during which the study was carried out, brown fat increased during the cool month and fell during the warm month. “The improvement in insulin sensitivity accompanying brown fat gain may open new avenues in the treatment of impaired glucose metabolism in the future and, the reduction in mild cold exposure from widespread central heating may impair brown fat function and may be a hidden contributor to obesity and metabolic disorders,” Lee said.

green hotels now a rage
The historic capital of Austria has seen a sudden spurt of green hotels over the last few years thanks to a similar surge in the number of aware travellers from around the world who love to stay in such properties RAHUL VAISHNAVI, VIENNA
M
eals prepared from locally sourced organic ingredients, hybrid cabs for guests, solar panels that produce electricity and water drawn from a well are some unique features on offer by the ‘green hotels’ of Vienna as they cash in on the global concept of eco-friendly hotels catering to the growing number of tourists conscious of their carbon footprint. Over the last few years, the historic capital of Austria has seen a sudden spurt of green hotels and their numbers are increasing every year owing to a similar surge in the number of aware travellers from around the world who love to stay in such places, officials said. “The number of guests preferring eco-friendly hotels is definitely rising, which means more business for such hotels and ultimately all of them contributing towards the environment,” said Verena Hable of the Vienna Tourist Board (VTB). “It is a win-win situation for
everybody,” she added. The many hoteliers of the city — one of the country’s nine federal states with a population of around 1.8 million and known for its captivating architecture, rich culture and diverse cuisine — are leaving no stone unturned to earn the bragging rights for going green. And the tariffs are just around 5-10 percent more ‘The number of compared to a guests preferring conventional hotel. eco-friendly Some of the hotels is rising, innovative which means techniques with heat recovery. more business Costs can be saved used include by around 25 percent water pipes runfor such hotels’ in heating and about ning through ceil60 percent in cooling,” ings and floors of said Christiane Weisthe hotel rooms so that senborn, CEO of Hotel Topazz. when hot water passes “Moreover, the hotel is equipped through, the room automatically becomes warm and there is no need with triple heat protection glasses and an airtight cladding,” added for electric heaters. “The heating and cooling of our Weissenborn, whose hotel also hotel is warranted by a ground water offers a range of eco-friendly wine fountain and a ventilation system and was awarded the Green Luxury

Get the best taste with perfect color IANS, LONDON
D
o music and room color have an effect on wine taste? Yes, very much, says a new study. Results of the world’s largest multi-sensory wine experiment revealed that a simple change in color and sound can affect the taste of wine by around 10 percent. “We were able to show that color and sound together have a far greater effect on people’s taste perceptions than light by itself,” Charles Spence, professor of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University, was quoted as saying. Listening to supposedly ‘sweet’ and ‘sour’ music in a room with red or green light-
ing can significantly alter the taste of a glass of wine, according to the findings. An experiment at London’s Southbank Centre tested how drinkers enjoyed a glass of wine when lighting and music were changed. Green light and ‘sour’ music increased freshness and reduced intensity by 14 per cent. Red lighting on its own brought out the fruitier notes of the wine, and green light on its own brought out the wine’s freshness. If people can’t change the paint or light in a room, the study claimed a change in dinner place settings can have a similar effect. People who prefer a fruity wine, and want to enhance its flavor, can try laying a red tablecloth or use red wine glasses.
Research Foundation (ECARF)standards for allergy friendly hotels. The original edifice built in 1989 now focusses specially on serving organic food. “Our nutritious breakfast buffet is made strictly from regionally grown organic products of high quality,” Wimmer told IANS. The hotel has also received the Austrian eco-label for its ecofriendly and sustainable concept. Taking the preference for organic products to the next level is Florian Weitzer, owner of Hotel Daniel Vienna. He not only has a vineyard but also indulges in bee keeping, all inside his hotel complex in the heart of the city. Even though the extra efforts put in to build and maintain the ecofriendly properties do burn a hole in the pocket, the hoteliers are not complaining as they consider it a “long-term investment”.
