Nikki Haley

creates history The Indian-American leader’s historic appointment as US envoy to the UN a sign of Indian Americans’ political emergence ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

N

ikki Haley’s historic appointment to a cabinet-rank post by Republican Presidentelect Donald Trump that caps the election of five Indian Americans to Congress this year has been welcomed by the community as a sign of its political emergence. Shekhar Narasimhan, a Democratic Party activist and fundraiser, said her appointment “shows that we have made it” as a community. “We don’t have to agree on everything, on policy, but we can celebrate the fact that we now have a place at the most important table in Washington, the cabinet,” he said. The job of US Permanent Representative, or ambassador, to the UN is a cabinet-level position unlike in most countries and goes to political appointees because of its high visibility in the global arena. Narasimhan said another sign of the community’s growing influence in US politics is the number of Indian American members of Congress going up from one to five in this year’s elections -- all of them Democrats. Of them, Kamala Harris, is the first Indian American elected to the senate. A.D. Amar, President of ‘Indian

Americans for Trump’, said Haley has achieved the status she deserves and it is good for India and the community. One of the pioneers of non-partisan community activism, Thomas Abraham, said: “It is a historic moment for the IndianAmerican community that one of its own has been appointed to a top-level position.” “As a deal-maker, she will do very well to negotiate terms with UN member-countries,” said Abraham, who is now the Chairman of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International and has been working for about 40 years to get Indian Americans to become politically active. Harpreet Sandhu, executive director of the Friends of the American Sikh Caucus, said he was excited because Haley is a daughter of Punjab. Trump said he would be inclusive as President and her appointment shows he is living up to it. Deepak Kavadia, the founder of the Non-Resident Indians Federation, said, “Trump has said that he would support Indian Americans, and this is his first step in keeping his word.” However, there has been an undercurrent of hostility among some Indian Americans to her

because she is a Republican. A Democratic Party activist, Varun Nikore, brought this to the surface questioning her competence because of the lack of foreign policy experience. “It’s not about being an Indian American, but finding the best person for the job,” he said.

Clinton’s popular vote Trump appeals for Trump drops charges lead exceeds 2 million unity on Thanksgiving against Clinton WASHINGTON: US 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has garnered 64,223,958 tallied votes, over two million more votes than President-elect Donald Trump, according to data released by the non-partisan Cook Political Report. With new votes tallied from New Jersey, Illinois, Maryland and California, Clinton’s Hillary Clinton popular vote lead reached 2,017,563 overnight. Trump so far has won 62,206,395 votes, Xinhua news agency reported. As many as 7,143,347 votes went to third party, write-ins, or independent candidates, the data revealed. Since votes in many states are still being counted, it is expected that Clinton’s lead in the popular vote, with Michigan’s 16 electoral votes still up for grab, will continue to grow. Clinton will be the fifth presidential nominee to win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote in the US history.

NEW YORK: US President-elect Donald Trump on Thanksgiving has prayed for the nation to come together after one of the most acrimonious campaigns that the country saw in decades. “It is my prayer, that on this Thanksgiving, we begin to heal our divisions and move forward as one country, strengthened by a shared purpose and very, very common resolve,” Trump said, Efe news reported. “Emotions are raw and tensions just don’t heal overnight,” he said in a brief video released on the eve of the holiday. The Republican real estate mogul clinched victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in a surprise result on November 8 following a contest filled with insults, mutual recriminations and heated rhetoric. The US President-elect said that the nation must strive to “restore the bonds of trust between citizens. Because when America is unified, there is nothing beyond our reach, and I mean absolutely nothing.”

WASHINGTON: President-elect Donald Trump has decided that he wont subject former rival Democratic Hillary Clinton to a criminal inquiry related to her private email server or her family foundation, his spokeswoman said. “I think when the president-elect tells you before he’s even inaugurated he doesn’t wish to pursue these charges, it sends a Donald Trump very strong message, tone and content, to the members,” New York Post quoted Kellyanne Conway as saying. Conway, who is now on the Trump transition team, was the first to report that the president-elect would not pursue his campaign pledge to “lock up” Clinton. “I think, he’s thinking of many different things as he prepares to become the President of the United States, and things that sound like the campaign are not among them,” Conway, who is now on the Trump transition team, said in an interview.

‘Demonetization ‘plunder’ can drag India’s GDP by 2 percent’ Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wondered if the government was aware of the extent of hardship that demonetization had caused small businesses and rural economy

Govt fails to break Parliament logjam NEW DELHI: Pandemonium over the demonetization decision continued in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, forcing the adjournment of the house for the day. The government efforts to break the logjam failed to cut much ice with opposition lawmakers. The chair adjourned the lower house of Parliament after the Question Hour was washed out due to opposition uproar and acrimonious scenes over its demand for a debate under the house rule governing an adjournment motion. The house was first adjourned soon after it met at 11 a.m., and then for the day shortly after 12 noon. The Rajya Sabha too was adjourned for the day after a spate of adjournments as the opposition continued to create ruckus over demonetization issue and demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi sit through the debate on it.

escribing the implementation of the demonetization drive as “monumental mismanagement” and a case of “organized loot and legalized plunder”, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said it will also drag the country’s GDP by 2 percentage points. “The national income, that is the GDP of the country, can decline by about 2 percentage points as a result of what has been done. This is an underestimate, not an overestimate,” said Manmohan Singh, a former Finance Minister and Reserve Bank of India Governor, during a debate in the Rajya Sabha. “What has been done can also weaken and erode our people’s confidence in the currency system and in the banking system,” he said, as both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley listened to the former head of government’s

seven-minute intervention. “It is no good that everyday the banking system comes up with new rules. It reflects very poorly on the Prime Minister’s Office, the Finance Minister’s Office and the Reserve Bank of India.” The Indian economy had expanded by 7.2 percent during the third quarter ended December

31 of last fiscal year, and by 7.6 per cent for the year as a whole. Manmohan Singh’s GDP estimate comes against the backdrop of a host of economists, experts and think tanks revising downward their growth outlook for India, with the most pessimistic forecast being a mere 0.5 per cent growth by Ambit Capital for the six-

NEW DELHI: Unruffled by the intensified attack from the opposition over the demonetization decision, the government on Wednesday said over 93 per cent of people taking part in an app-based survey supported the move. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday sought public opinion on his official app where a number of questions have been posted vis-avis scrapping of old Rs 500/1,000 notes. Over five lakh (half a million) people participated in the survey within 24 hours.

month period ending March 31, 2017. The former prime minister wondered if the government was aware of the extent of hardship that demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes ordered by Prime Minister Modi had caused small businesses, the common man and the rural economy.

Nearly 150 killed in Pakistan’s top diplomat to visit Kanpur train accident India amid border tension KANPUR/NEW DELHI/PATNA: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Monday ordered a “forensic probe” into Sunday’s train derailment tragedy near Kanpur that led to the death of nearly 150 people. The death toll in Sunday’s IndorePatna Express derailment in Kanpur rose to 149, Home Ministry officials said on Tuesday. Rescue teams called off their search operation after pulling out 25 more bodies from the mangled coaches of the Indore-Patna Express that had derailed near Pukhrayan station, about 60 km from Kanpur city. District Magistrate of Kanpur Dehat Kumar Ravi Kant Singh told IANS that 137 bodies had been identified and three army personnel were among those killed. Efforts were being made to identify the remaining passengers, he added. Fourteen coaches of the train, which was on its way from Indore to Patna, derailed around 3 a.m. on Sunday. Panic set in when the coach-

The worst hit were the sleeper coaches S1, S2, S3 and S4. At Patna Railway Station, where a special train carrying the stranded passengers arrived on Monday, the scene was quite emotional. Anita Singh, one of the survivors, said: “We cannot forget the memories of death and destruction and how we survived inside the ill-fated IndorePatna Express train.”

akistan on Wednesday officially confirmed to India that its top diplomat will attend a global conference on Afghanistan in Amritsar early next month amid intensifying deadly military tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said Islamabad confirmed that Sartaj Aziz, foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, would visit India for the December 3-4 Heart of Asia Istanbul Process event. The conference on development and security in Afghanistan is likely to be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Aziz said last week that he would go to India. But Swarup pointed out then that India had received no official confirmation from Pakistan about it. The de facto foreign policy chief ’s participation in the

Afghanistan conference comes amid heightened border and diplomatic tensions between the two countries. On Tuesday, three Indian soldiers were killed on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. India vowed revenge after one of the bodies of the soldiers was found

mutilated at the de facto border in the Kashmir Valley. Pakistan rejected the allegation as “baseless”. The border tension continued on Wednesday with Pakistan alleging that at least nine persons were killed when cross-border shelling from India hit a passenger bus in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

MILINDA GHOSH ROY, KOLKATA

W

ith less than a week to go for her daughter Kavya’s marriage, Swapan Nath of Jadavpur, Kolkata, seems a desolate figure in front of a city ATM outlet. With the sudden announcement of demonetization by the central government, it seems the sky has fallen on the veteran government clerk’s head. “A daughter’s marriage is still the biggest challenge for a father. We prepared for the big day for months and withdrew cash of rupees two lakhs for emergency payments, only to realize most of that money isn’t legal tender anymore,” said the helpless father. Whether a fair drive to eradicate black money or not, the Centre’s decision to ban the higher-denomination currency notes has put a lot of marriage hopefuls in the same boat. The marriage season in India is in full bloom but with most of the old cash wiped off from people’s hands and limited options for withdrawals, couples are finding it tedious to be united in wedlock. For young and independent couples like Payel, a professor of Mathematics at IIT-Ranchi, and Mrinal Jana, an Assistant Professor at Dehradun, the plans for a lavish marriage ceremony has taken a hit amid the present cash crisis. With just a few days to go for their marriage, a lot of preparations were left to be done. But instead, Payel and Mrinal were forced to spend a considerable amount of time at banks to get their cash exchanged. “My dad had to queue up in front of a local bank to first deposit the old cash and then withdraw the necessary amount. There was confusion even among the bankers about the upper limit of cash

Demonetization hits nuptial knots Centre’s decision to ban the high-denomination currency notes has put marriage hopefuls in distress

withdrawal. The government had initially permitted withdrawal of 24 thousand rupees a week, but that is next to nothing for marriage preparations,” Payel complained. To balance out the present cash crisis, the government then gave some relief for farmers and families celebrating weddings. In a statement, Economic Affairs

Secretary Shaktikanta Das said: “For wedding ceremonies, up to Rs 2.5 lakh can be withdrawn from the bank account by the KYC-complaint customers.” But for couples whose marriage is knocking at the door, the new relaxation is of little help. “We are so close to the marriage dates. The functions have already

started. The relaxation on withdrawal came in very late for us. But for others who have their marriage planned at the end of the month or next, this surely would help,” said Delhi-based Akshay Rohatgi, who is getting married in a couple of days. However, complaints have poured in from many areas that the

banks have refused to let the couples or their family members withdraw a lumpsum amount citing either shortage of funds or non-receipt of any order from the Reserve Bank of India. “When I heard the government announcement, I was ecstatic. But my happiness evaporated when I reached the counter. I was told the bank had a cash shortage. So, I was asked to withdraw Rs 24,000 every week for the next few weeks. They didn’t listen to my pleas,” said a retired government employee, whose son is scheduled to marry early next month. A senior manager of a private bank in Jamshedpur expressed dismay over the government’s constantly shifting stand. “The day the announcement was made there were people at our gates with their PAN cards and affidavits. They even carried the wedding invites. But how do we allow them to withdraw? The RBI circular was yet to reach us,” said the manager on condition of anonymity. The Rs 2.5 lakh withdrawal for weddings itself comes with several tough caveats. The amount, allowed to be withdrawn till December 30, will have to be out of the balances at credit “as of close of business on November 8, 2016”. The withdrawal can be made by either of the parents or the person getting married. The withdrawal request has to be accompanied by evidence of the wedding (invitation card) and copies of receipts for advance payments already made -- such as marriage hall booking and advance payments to caterers. Moreover, there should also be a list of people to whom the money will be paid — along with a declaration made that they do not have bank accounts.

Fresh survey of Indian orchids need of the hour Northeastern India harbors 856 orchid species, including species stretching in to the Indian IBBH and other states SAHANA GHOSH, KOLKATA

s habitat fragmentation and illegal collections threaten to wipe out some of the most beautiful and rare orchid species in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot (IBBH), scientists surveying the plants in Laos say extensive mapping and proper inventorying of the species in India is the need of the hour to save them. Scientists who are studying the plants in the limestone cliffs of Laos (a part of IBBH) believe that identifying conservation priorities for the endangered flora in the

Southeast Asian nation will also benefit India, given the common dangers of habitat fragmentation and the ruthless collection of the flowers for regional and international trade. “Our main objective is to identify conservation priorities in Laos within the context of highly threatened IBBH, with special focus on nearly 2,100 orchids found in this region,” conservationist Pankaj Kumar, a member of IUCN-SSC Orchid Specialist Group Asia, said. “In 1890, Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker wrote a comprehensive account on the flora of British India

but, since then, no one else has been able to produce such comprehensive floristic studies. We are heading towards the sixth mass extinction but how can anyone think of which species to prioritize and conserve if we don’t even know what species are found in India,” he questioned. One of the most bio diverse regions of the world which continues to reveal biological treasures, IBBH encompasses 2,373,000 km of tropical Asia east of the Ganges-Brahmaputra lowlands. The Indian portion of the hotspot, straddling stretches of northeast India and the Andaman

Islands, shelters around 400 species. “Because IBBH includes parts of northeastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura) and also parts of the Andaman islands, any kind of conservation issue in Laos fully applies to Indian orchids too, as many regions in northeastern India

are also understudied due to inaccessibility,” Kumar explained. India’s northeast is particularly important in this scenario. It harbours 856 orchid species overall, including the species stretching in to the Indian IBBH and other states. Celebrated for sheer elegance and beauty, these plants are also sought for their medicinal value.

Catholic priests can forgive abortion: Pope IANS, LONDON

A

nnouncing in an apostolic letter released on Monday, Pope Francis has extended indefinitely the power of Catholic priests to forgive abortions. It continues a special dispensation granted last year for the duration of the Year of Mercy — which finished on Sunday — which gave all priests, rather than just bishops and specially designated confessors, the power to absolve the sin of abortion, CNN reported. While the practical effect of Francis’ announcement remains unclear, it draws attention to the prevailing

Pope Francis

theme of his papacy: That the doors of the Church must remain open, just as God’s forgiveness and mercy

extend to all those who repent from sin. That said, the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion has not changed — it is still viewed as a “grave sin.” But it makes it easier for women who have had abortions to be absolved for their actions and rejoin the church. “I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life,” the Pope’s letter stated. “In the same way, however, I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father.”

Others in contention for the top military post include Bahawalpur Corps Commander Lt Gen Javed Iqbal Ramday and Inspector General Training and Evaluation Lt Gen Qamar Bajwa. All four generals are from the Pakistan Military Academy’s 62nd Long Course, but have had different career trajectories. Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has said that completion of ongoing counter-terrorism operations would be the responsibility of the new army chief. The war against terrorism will be among the major responsibilities the new army chief will have to focus on, Asif said.

Britain’s economic growth forecast revised LONDON: Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond on Wednesday revised down growth forecasts for the British economy for 2017 and 2018. Hammond told lawmakers in his House of Commons speech that Britain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in 2017 would be 1.4 per cent, down from 2.2 per cent predicted seven months ago, Xinhua news agency reported. Rhe downward revision in GDP is in part a reaction to Britain’s referendum decision to quit the European Union (EU).

pleased to see the record back-toback, year-on-year growth in student numbers,” said US Ambassador Richard R. Verma. “With efforts such as our Passport to India initiative, we are also seeing the number of American students in India beginning to grow,” he added.

The Open Doors report is published annually by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. According to the report, the number of international students in US colleges and universities surpassed one million for the first time during the 201516 academic year. The number of international students increased by seven per cent over the previous year to a new high of nearly 1,044,000, representing five per cent of the total student population at US institutions. This strong growth confirms that the US remains the destination of choice in higher education. In 2015-16, there were nearly 69,000 more international students in US higher education compared to the previous year. India is ranked 13th among the top 25 destinations of US study abroad.

People are made to speak against Modi but I salute the people... some stood in the queues for five hours, six hours but endured the hardship. The same way as people in Japan endured in 2011,” he said, referring the earthquake-triggered tsunami five years ago that hit Japan. Lodha panel recommends dismissal of BCCI top brass NEW DELHI: The R.M. Lodha committee on Monday recommended the sacking of all office bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its state associations while also suggesting the appointment of former Home Secretary G.K. Pillai as an observer in the apex body. In a fresh status report filed to the Supreme Court, the panel asked that Pillai be appointed as observer with power to appoint an auditor, and guide the BCCI administration, particularly on the award of contracts and on transparency. The recommendations by the SCappointed Lodha Committee are the latest development in the ongoing stand-off between the apex court and the Anurag Thakur-led national cricket board over the running of the game in the country. The latest report makes a mention of “continued non-compliance by the office bearers of the BCCI”. “Direct and declare that all officebearers of the BCCI and the state associations who are disqualified by virtue of the norms at Para 4 (above 70, Minister or government servant, holding a post in any other sports body, has been a BCCI office-bearer for a cumulative period of nine years or has been charged by a court for criminal offence) above cease to hold office forthwith,” the Lodha panel’s status report said.

The panel also directed BCCI Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri to look after all administrative and management matters of the board. “Direct that all administrative and management matters be carried out by the CEO of the BCCI without advertence to the Office Bearers.” “Appointment of G.K. Pillai, former Union Home Secretary, as the Observer of the BCCI to supervise the administration of the BCCI by the CEO and empower the Committee to appoint all necessary secretarial staff, assistance and fix remuneration as may be determined appropriate,” the report added. —IANS

540 crore every month. Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and some top officials met the central team and submitted a detailed report on the impact of the scrapping of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) representatives at the meeting said the same would be done in a couple of days. BY A STAFF WRITER T LOUIS, MO -- The venerable Dances of India, Missouri’s oldest classical Indian dance company, delighted audiences with its spectacularly choreographed production, The Music of Water—Tales of Adventure, Love, and Magic Along India’s Sacred Rivers, at its 39th Annual Performance during November 11-13 at the beautiful Skip Viragh Center for the Arts in St. Louis. With a script written and narrated by local writer and dancer Nartana Prem, and choreographed by co-director Theckla Mehta, The Music of Water featured Saraswati—who is always associated with

S

water and words--and little-known tales--such as why the moon ended up in Shiva’s hair—which have taken place alongside rivers. The Music of Water also achieved aesthetic, mystical heights, in a scene in which fifteen dancers dressed in blue saris longed for Krishna along the Yamuna. A stage upon which Saraswati played the veena was also used effectively, as there are not many productions which feature Saraswati as the protagonist. Company dancers also performed classical dances in the Bharata Natyam style, choreographed by Artistic Director Asha Prem who always insists upon precise choreography and coordination.

Sikh Harvard student abused, harassed BY A STAFF WRITER OSTON, MS -- A 22-year-old Sikh Indian American, studying at the prestigious Harvard Law School, was allegedly abused and harassed at a store near the campus by a man who mistook him for a Muslim. Harmann Singh, a first-year law student at the university, said he was shopping in a store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while speaking on the phone with his mother, when a man walked in and said to the clerk behind the counter, “Oh look, there’s a (expletive) Muslim.” According to Singh, the man started following him around the store, harassing him and asking him where he was from. BY A STAFF WRITER OSS BEACH, CA -- One person died and another was airlifted to a hospital in serious condition after a small plane crashed into two homes and a pickup truck near Half Moon Bay Airport on November 18. The first reports of a small-plane crash in Moss Beach came in around 11:20 am, and firefighting crews responded to the 1000 block of Park Way. Two people were aboard the plane, a singleengine Cessna 172, said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, which will investigate the crash. The aircraft crashed about 1½ miles from the airport, hitting two houses and a pickup truck before coming to rest at the second home it hit, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Battalion Chief David Cosgrave. One person in the plane was pronounced dead at the scene. The other, who appeared to be a man, was flown to Stanford Medical Center by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. FAA officials said the plane had taken off on November 18 from Sacramento Executive Airport and was headed to Half Moon Bay Airport when the crash occurred. Cynthia Trujillo, who lives at one of the homes the aircraft hit, said no one inside her house was injured.

his conversation with his mother, who was worried. She could hear the man questioning Singh and told her son to leave the shop. Singh said the man followed him to the checkout counter. “I told him, ‘Hey I’m actually from New

York. I live here now down the street. Is there anything I can do to help you?’” Singh said. The man did not respond and Singh left the store as quickly as possible. A bystander who checks in with the person being harassed in any situation can make all the difference, he said. The owner of the store said that he was going back and forth between the back and front of the shop at the time of the incident that took place on November 11 and saw the man who spoke to Singh come in. He said he had planned to ask the man to leave, but went to the back of the store when the incident occurred. Both Singh and the other man were gone when he returned. He said he was shocked and sorry when his clerk told him what happened.

Woman under attack for wearing a ‘hijab’

Couple may get 20-yr jail for forced labor BY A STAFF WRITER TOCKTON, CA -- An Indian American couple in Stockton, Calif., Satish Kartan, 43, and his wife, Sharmistha Barai, 38, were indicted by a grand jury on November 17 for forced labor and conspiracy to commit forced labor. The two may be jailed for 20 years if convicted. According to the Department of Justice, Kartan was also charged with fraud in contacting foreign labor and Barai was also charged with benefiting from forced labor. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and Acting US Attorney Phillip A. Talbert of the Eastern District of California announced the indictment. Court documents said that between February 21, 2014, and October 3, 2016, Kartan and Barai hired workers from overseas to perform domestic labor in their homes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Stockton and elsewhere in the United States. In advertisements seeking workers on the internet and India-based newspapers, the defendants made false claims regarding the wages and the duties of employment. Once the workers arrived at the defendants’ residences, Kartan and Barai forced them to work 18 hours a day with limited rest and nourishment. The defendants did not pay wages and

Salonica ‘Nicki’ Pancholy

BY A STAFF WRITER AN FRANCISCO, CA -- A 41-year-old Indian American woman was racially attacked in Milpitas, Calif., after a bandana on her head was mistaken as a hijab, the latest in a series of assaults following Donald Trump’s election win. Salonica ‘Nicki’ Pancholy was on her ‘peace walk’ when upon her return she found her car window shattered, her purse gone and a note calling her a “Hijab wearing b****,” and asking her to ‘get the f--- out’. Pancholy is not Muslim, nor does she wear a hijab. She is a Rajasthani and has been battling Lupus, which caused her hair loss, and put the bandana on her head as protection from the sun. She had been hiking in Mission Peak (just north of San Jose) every morning for the past 65 days before this happened. The police are investigating the note as a hate crime and auto burglary as her windows were smashed and someone stole her purse and checkbook, it said. Pancholy is just one of a growing number of people across the country, even in the Democratic stronghold of the Bay Area, to fall victim to hateful harassment since Trump was elected president.

S

used force, physical restraint and coercive conduct to get the workers to perform the labor and services. The indictment alleges that Kartan and Barai struck one worker on multiple occasions, including one incident where Kartan grabbed her hands and caused them to be burned over the flames of a gas stove. Moreover, the indictment alleges that the defendants failed to pay another worker and told her that they would call the police if she tried to leave. When she was ultimately able to arrange to be picked up from the defendants’ house, Kartan refused

to provide her with the access code to the gated community so that her ride could enter, said the DOJ statement. On October 21, 2016, Kartan and Barai were arrested on a criminal complaint and were released on bond with special conditions that prohibit them from hiring any nonrelatives to perform domestic services or child care work for them. The defendants were also prohibited from directly or indirectly contacting any of their prior domestic workers. If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Plan for Registry for Muslims opposed BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- Top Democratic lawmakers and rights bodies have slammed President-elect Donald Trump’s reported plan to reinstate a database of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries. The National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS) is a post-9/11 program which required travelers to the US from specified Muslim-majority countries to immediately register with the federal government or face deportation. “Reinstating failed programs that target Arabs and Muslims in our country is exactly what ISIS was cheering on election night when America, a beacon of freedom in the world, gives in to fear and begins chipping away at civil rights, our enemies are emboldened and their ranks swell with new recruits,” Senator Dick Durbin said. The Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Raul M. Grijalva and Keith Ellison, Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus chairwoman Judy Chu, CPC vice chair Congressman Mike Honda, and CPC vice chair Mark Takano slammed Trump surrogate Carl Higbie for suggesting that Japanese-American internment camps could serve as a precedent

W

Carl Higbie, formor spokesman for Pro-Trump America PAC

for the creation of a Muslim registry. “These remarks are beyond disturbing. This is fear, not courage. This is hate, not policy,” Honda said. “Since Trump was elected president, thousands of Americans have voiced fears over what our country might look like in the coming years. Last night, one of his surrogates showed us why so many people are afraid of a Trump administration. “The fact that our incoming president has considered internment as a model for how to move forward with the Muslim community is absolutely shocking. We cannot allow it to be

normalized or enacted,” Ellison said. The South Asian Bar Association, which represents Indian American and other South Asian lawyers, has also denounced the suggestions of a registry for non-citizen Muslims in the US. Higbie’s suggestion that internment camps that imprisoned countless JapaneseAmericans during World War II is a “precedent” for a possible Muslim registry, presupposes the lawfulness of a program that’s only lasting impact is that of shame, regret and embarrassment, it said. SABA said this proposed registry is rooted in NSEERS that required certain “foreign citizens and nationals” to continuously check in with US authorities. After repeated criticism and documented ineffectiveness, NSEERS was abandoned in 2011, leaving a legacy of deporting individuals who had committed no crimes and had no links to terrorism, it said. SABA called on Americans of all backgrounds to reject the notion that registration and potential mass incarceration of residents of this country solely based upon nationality, race or religion, without justification, cause or purpose is acceptable.

CT math prof wins $100,000 jackpot BY A STAFF WRITER ONROE, CT -- This is no doubt a one-of-a kind Powerball win. In an effort to teach his students about probability and odds, Indian American math professor Nicholas Kapoor, of Monroe, Connecticut, used a Powerball ticket as a real-life example to explain the odds of winning. And, to his utter surprise, he ended up winning a $100,000 lottery prize recently. “Somebody is going to win,” the professor told his class, according to a press release. Two days later, that “somebody,” turned out to be Kapoor, holding a winning $100,000 Powerball ticket. Kapoor’s Powerball “Quick Pick” ticket matched four of the five numbers drawn, plus the Powerball number. Because his Powerball ticket was a Power Play, for an extra $1 at the

time of purchase, Kapoor’s $50,000 prize was automatically doubled to $100,000, added the release. Kapoor, who teaches statistics at Fairfield University, went to the lottery’s website to check his numbers and couldn’t believe his eyes. “I had to scan (the ticket) to confirm,” lottery officials quoted Kapoor as saying.

Kapoor buys a lottery ticket almost weekly despite what he said his undergraduate probability professor taught him, according to a report in ABC news. “He’d always show us that you shouldn’t play the lottery because the odds of winning are so small,” Kapoor told ABC News. “My counterargument was always, ‘Yeah, but somebody has to win.’”. Kapoor, who took home $68,000 after taxes, said that he sent his old professor a message on Facebook after picking up his check from Connecticut Lottery headquarters. “I said, ‘Remember how you always told us ...’” Kapoor said. “And he said, ‘That’s the problem with probability ... ‘So he basically said, ‘Yeah, you won but ...’” The winning ticket was sold at Huntington Center Gulf located on 20 Huntington Street in Shelton.

19-year-old arrested 5 times in 12 days

Sai Ramagiri

BY A STAFF WRITER LAINSBORO, NJ -- A 19-year-old township man was arrested five times in 12 days this month on multiple charges, including attempted assault by auto, driving under the influence and drug possession. The police said Sai Ramagiri was initially arrested on November 4 by the Plainsboro Police Department for allegedly attempting to run over a friend with his vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. At around 6 am, he got into an argument with a friend on Parker Road and then tried to run him over with his Jeep Wrangler. When the police arrived, they found open alcohol containers in the vehicle as well as marijuana. He was arrested and charged with DWI and later released. He was then arrested at around 1:30 pm on November 8 after the police found Ramagiri “leaned over vomiting” near a Jeep on Monet Court with a shredded rear tire. Officers recovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia from the vehicle and charged Ramagiri with DWI, drug possession and several motor vehicle rules violations. He was later released. Two days later, Monmouth Junction firef!ghters found the teen with a white Porsche against a guardrail on Ridge Road. Ramagiri, who was standing outside the vehicle, told officials the vehicle ran out of gas. An officer found a marijuana cigarette sticking out the Ramagiri front jeans pocket and he was arrested and charged with drug possession and DWI. He was processed and later released on a summons. The third arrest came as Ramagiri was driving the 2016 Porche on Ridge Road and the South Brunswick officer who arrested him five days earlier saw behind the wheel. The officer stopped Ramagiri and found marijuana in the car, police said. He was charged with drug possession and motor vehicle summonses, police said.

Yogic breathing can help fight depression NEW YORK: Meditation can help alleviate severe depression in people who do not fully respond to drugs, reports a new study. Researchers found significant improvement in symptoms of depression and anxiety in medicated patients with major depressive disorder who participated in the yogic breathing technique. The Sudarshan Kriya yoga helped those suffering from depression and

on medication when compared to those who took medicines but did not do any breathing exercise. “The study found a promising, lower-cost therapy that could potentially serve as an effective, nondrug approach for patients battling depression,” said Anup Sharma, doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania, in the US. The meditation technique, which is practised in both groups and at home,

includes a series of sequential, rhythm-specific breathing exercises that bring people into a deep, restful and meditative state. It involves slow and calm breaths alternated with fast and stimulating breaths. Patients, who practised Sudarshan Kriya yoga, also showed a greater improvement in mood, interest in activities and energy levels. It also brought down suicidal thoughts and feelings of guilt among other symptoms of depression. “Sudarshan Kriya yoga gives people an active method to experience a deep meditative state that’s easy to learn and incorporate in diverse settings,” Sharma added. Past studies suggest that yoga and other controlled breathing techniques can potentially adjust the nervous system to reduce stress hormones.

ost premature babies can become perfectly healthy and evolve normally in both body and mind — but only if they get specialized medical care after birth, health experts suggest. Premature babies are those born before 37 weeks of gestation. Although some premature babies show normal growth, some may have continuing problems that adversely effect their growth and

These can be related to breathing, blood circulation, digestion, feeding, issues concerning the brain and other challenges,” Nupur Gupta, Gynecologist and Obstetrician and Director of Gurgaon’s Well Woman Clinic, told IANS. These babies may also be prone to the risk of developing hypothermia infection, brain hemorrhage and retinopathy of prematurity. However, timely intervention can help the baby to be healthy both

Salt, protein in food may cause sleep IANS, NEW YORK

H NEW YORK: Heavy smokers with diabetes may be at double the risk of facing an early death, a study led by an Indian-origin researcher has found. Diabetes is a chronic illness in which there are high levels of glucose in the blood. People with diabetes may also be at a risk for various other health complications. “The study found diabetes doubling risk for all-cause mortality and non-lung cancer mortality,” said Kavita Garg, Professor at University of Colorado-Denver, US. —IANS

igher protein and salt content in our food, as well as the volume consumed, can lead to longer naps, suggests a new research. Researchers at The Scripps Research Institute in the US created a system that can measure both the sleep and feeding behaviors of individual fruit flies and discovered that, in much the same way as humans, the insects sleep for longer periods following larger meals. Further studies also revealed that certain types of food can promote post-meal sleep. To better understand this relationship, William Ja and his team created the Activity Recording CAFE (ARC), a system for flies that

enables visual tracking of food consumption and insect motion. Recordings of fruit flies’ behavior from this system revealed that after

eating a meal, the insect sleeps more before returning in to a normal state of wakefulness. The sleep period generally lasts

around 20 to 40 minutes, with flies that eat larger portions generally sleeping more. To determine if individual nutrients could modulate post-meal sleep, the team gave the flies food consisting of protein, salt or sugar. The study, published in the journal eLife, found that only protein and salt were effectors of postmeal sleep, suggesting that this form of sleep can indeed be regulated by specific food types. “The ARC provides a starting point for future studies aimed at uncovering the exact genes and circuits that enable meal size, protein and salt to drive sleep,” Ja said. “As sleep is a vulnerable state for animals in nature, it will be interesting to discover why post-meal naps are necessary,” Ja added.
