ndia-born former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta, scheduled to begin his twoyear prison sentence on June 18, told a U.S. court that he should not be required to pay a heavy $13.9 million in civil penalties since he already has to pay over $11 million in criminal fines. Gupta’s lawyer Seth Waxman argued his case during a hearing before a three-judge panel of the 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals here on June 16. Gupta, 65, was not present for the hearing, during which Waxman argued that his client personally did not make any money from the trades done by Galleon hedge fund founder Raj Rajratnam and “nor had any expectation of making any money.” Waxman said that Gupta should not be permanently barred from serving as a director on a board of a public company or taking up the role of investment adviser. The appeals court judge asked Securities and Exchange Commission’s lawyer David Lisitza that does not the civil penalty of nearly $14 million “seem high” since Gupta already has to pay $five million fine in the criminal case and
S based rights group “Sikhs for Justice” has challenged U.S. government’s suggestion to a Washington court to grant immunity to former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh in a human rights violation case. The U.S. Department of Justice in a May 2 submission asked the Washington federal court “to recognize Prime Minister Singh’s immunity from this suit while in office” as determined by the US government. The determination was “in consideration of the relevant principles of customary international law, and in the implementation of its foreign policy and in the conduct of its international relations,” it said. However, “The United States expresses no view on the merits of Plaintiffs’ claims against Prime Minister Singh”, the submission added. Challenging the submission, SFJ on June 16 asked the court to take a “judicial notice” of the fact that Dr. Manmohan Singh is no longer the Prime Minister of India and therefore does not enjoy immunity as “head of a foreign government”. The Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act (FSIA) also does not cover acts committed by the foreign officials in their “official capacity,” it said. In April, deputy principal legal

Lisitza said “if not Gupta then who” should pay the fine since Gupta breached the trust of his company and board when he disclosed Goldman’s confidential information to Rajaratnam. Gupta’s lawyers have said he did not accrue any “direct financial benefit” from the insider trading offenses and yet he has been ordered to pay a “heavy price” of two years in prison, a $ 5 million fine and a separate $6 million in restitution to Goldman Sachs. In addition to the $13.9 million civil penalties, the district court issued three permanent injunctions which effectively prohibit Gupta from ever serving as an officer or director on a board of a pub-

advisor of the US State Department had asked the Department of Justice to submit “Suggestion of Immunity” to the court and take necessary steps for dismissal of case against former prime minister Dr. Singh. A Federal Court in Washington had issued summons to the former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh on charges of “funding several counter insurgency operations in state of Punjab during the 1990s resulting in more than hundred thousand Sikhs being killed extra-judicially by the security forces”. The case against Manmohan Singh was filed during his September 2013 visit under the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).

Will Obama, Modi WALK THE TALK?

ill U.S. President Barack Obama take Narendra Modi for a casual walk across the street to Bombay Club in the American capital for a ‘chai pe charcha’ on bilateral ties when the Indian prime minister comes calling in September? It may not be as wild a guess as it seems at first glance. For of late “the bear is loose” — to use Obama’s own catch phrase — for his recent impromptu escapades from the “bubble” at the White House. Chief of Staff Denis McDonough suggested an afternoon coffee break, and without telling the press or most of the staff, the president walked a block and half to a nearby Starbucks outlet. “The bear is loose
again,” Obama told a staffer as the two walked out without jackets and with their shirt sleeves rolled up — tailed by White House reporters and the secret service in tow. “How’s the coffee?” a CBS News correspondent who just happened to be around, asked Obama as the commanderin-chief walked back to the West Wing with a paper cup in hand, greeting construction workers and waving at tourists on the way. “Uhh...it’s tea,” the president replied. The president’s staff, according to CBS News, says there’s no planned message in these impromptu outings, that he just likes to walk and talk, but they like the message they think it sends: regular guy. Then next day Obama took Education Secretary Arne Duncan for a short ride across the Potomac to grab a hamburger for lunch at the FireFlies, a small single storey restaurant in Alexandria,
US calls for efforts to protect oceans
US Secretary of State John Kerry
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry said the oceans are facing threats from over-fishing, pollution and acidification, and called for “a comprehensive, global strategy” to protect them, media reported on June 17. Kerry made the remarks while inaugurating a two-day international ocean conference hosted by the US Department of State,
to discuss the danger to the oceans and concrete actions that should be taken, Xinhua reported. Around 400 people from more than 80 nations, including World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, several heads of states as well as foreign ministers, were present at the “Our Ocean” conference held in Washington, D.C. “Stewardship of our ocean is not a one-person event, it is a national event, it is a country event, it is a universal requirement all across this planet,” Kerry told the conference participants. “The ocean today supports livelihoods of up to 12 percent of the world’s population. But it’s also essential to maintain the environment in which we all live,” he said. According to Kerry, one third of the world’s fish stocks are over exploited, and the rest are being fished to their absolute maximum sustainable level. “A significant chunk of marine life may simply die out because it can no longer live, no longer survive, in the oceans’ water,” said the American Secretary of State.
Virginia. Obama may be currently at odds with the Russian President Vladimir Putin, but four years ago he took his predecessor Dmitri Medvedev for a ride across the Potomac for lunch at his favorite hamburger joint, Ray's Hell Burger, in Arlington, Virginia. It was "Just a Couple of Guys Grabbing Burgers" as the New York Times headlined the summit lunch. So would it be a surprise if Obama takes Modi out for a little tete-a-tete with a once unwelcome guest to let bygones be bygones?

American embassy in Baghdad. Obama said in a letter to Congressional leaders that the force, which began deploying on June 15, has been sent “for the purpose of protecting US citizens and property, if necessary, and is equipped for combat,” news agency Xinhua reported. “This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed,” Obama wrote. Earlier, U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on June 14 ordered the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush to move from the North Arabian Sea into the Gulf, amid escalating violence in Iraq. The order will provide President Barack Obama additional flexibility should military options be required to protect American lives, citizens and interests in Iraq, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby said in a statement, Xinhua reported.
Unending school shooting: Obama says America should be ashamed WASHINGTON: As America witnessed its 74th school shooting this week since the “massacre of innocents” at an elementary school 18 months ago, President Barack Obama said he was ashamed that America can’t put a stop to them. “We should be ashamed of that,” Obama said, hours after a 14-year-old was shot at an Oregon high school last week. “There’s no place else like this,” he said lamenting barring a fundamental shift in public opinion, “it will not change.” “My biggest frustration so far is the fact that this society has not been willing to take some basic steps to keep guns out of the hands of people who can do just unbelievable damage,” Obama said. No developed nation on earth would
put up with mass shootings that happen now once a week and disappear from the news within a day - no nation except America, Obama said as he took questions from young Americans through the social media site Tumblr. There have been 74 school shootings since the December 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 children and six adults were shot to death, according to a group called Everytown for Gun Safety.

In April, deputy principal legal

advisor of the US State Department had asked the Department of Justice to submit “Suggestion of Immunity” to the court and take necessary steps for dismissal of case against former prime minister Dr. Singh. A Federal Court in Washington had issued summons to the former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh on charges of “funding several counter insurgency operations in state of Punjab during the 1990s resulting in more than hundred thousand Sikhs being killed extra-judicially by the security forces”. The case against Manmohan Singh was filed during his September 2013 visit under the Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).

ew Delhi b o r n Pratishth a Khanna, who came to the U.S. illegally at the age of ten, is one of ten local ‘Champions of Change’ honored by the White House for their exemplary leadership in their communities. All the ten honored on June 17 were what are called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients under a programme initiated by President Barack Obama through a memo signed on June 15, 2012. The program requires the U.S. immigration authorities to defer removal action for certain undocumented young people who came to the U.S. as children and have pursued education or military service here. They are also often referred to as “DREAMers” as most of them meet the general require-
ments of the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. “These DACA recipients serve as success stories and role models in their academic and professional spheres,” the White House said. Khanna from Laurel, Maryland for one, is currently a senior at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and will graduate in May with a BS in Biology. She is an active member of the API Youth Convening-DACA Collaborative planning committee and the Maryland Dream Youth Committee (MDYC). She is also a member of Dreamers for DREAMers student organization at UMBC. After graduation, Khanna will be working (thanks to DACA) as an Emergency room medical scribe and will pursue a Certified Nursing Assistant Programme at Howard Community College. She hopes to attend medical school in Fall 2017.

Modi in a new avatar Now, the prime minister’s restraint and dignity are in marked contrast to his earlier combative persona. It cannot be gainsaid that his electoral success has either had a remarkable mellowing effect, or that Modi is really two individuals rolled into one AMULYA GANGULI, IANS
E
ven if the metamorphosis of Narendra Modi from a “hate figure to an avatar of modernity and progress”, as has been noted by the Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, has earned his party’s displeasure, the description is likely to seem apt to most people. Moreover, the transformation will appear startling because only a few months ago, Modi was at his vituperative best — or, rather, worst — to the

The jibe was at her alleged involvement in an Indian Premium League (IPL) scam. Now, the prime minister’s restraint and dignity are in marked contrast to his earlier combative persona. It cannot be gainsaid that his electoral success has either had a remark-
able mellowing effect, or that Modi is really two individuals rolled into one. While his earlier avatar was all fire and brimstone, his latest individuality is nothing but sweetness and light. Besides, it isn’t only that the end of the poll campaign has brought the curtains down on his belligerence. He is now also living up to his image as the doer, who follows a punishing work schedule with an unremitting focus on governance. As his commandments to ministers and officials show — do not touch my feet, keep your offices clean, speak to the point, do not dawdle over files — Modi not only intends to set behavioral patterns but also implement his hands-on style of administration. From the commendation which he received from Sonia Gandhi for his promise on the women’s reservation bill to the proposal to introduce a diamond quadrilateral of bullet trains to complement the golden quadrilateral of highways, and the setting up of 100 world class cities, Modi can be said to have hit the ground running. True, much of this is still only pledges. It will take time for the results to become visible. What is reassuring, however, is the business-like aura which the prime minister projects. The impression which he conveys is that there will be no dragging of feet where official efforts are concerned. It is noteworthy that the new government hasn’t taken a single false step except for the V.K. Singh affair, where the former army chief apparently exceeded his brief as a minister in a matter concerning his successor who has been backed by Defense Minister Arun Jaitley. The earlier rumpus about Article 370 relating to Kashmir caused by a minister of state in the prime minister’s office has also died down. Perhaps Modi’s advice to ministers to conduct “research” before voicing their opinions has had an effect.
The Gandhis must vacate for an opposition to take shape SAEED NAQVI, IANS
A
fter the vigorous opening speech in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi’s rump of a party looked even more battered and bruised. The most reassuring news for them since the May 16 election results is spread across three columns of Times of India: ‘Gandhis will personally probe the poll defeat’. In other words the regular system of the famous A.K. Antony committees to investigate Congress defeats is being discarded. Antony, an acute Gandhi loyalist, never in the course of his numerous probes, turned the search lights on his political masters. But this time he may be left with no room for maneuver. The Gandhis will be on the dissection table. Reports of irreversible poor health may be leaked. What better way to stop the leak than sink the very idea of the Antony Committee. That the mother and son team have undertaken to probe the
party’s rout implies that their leadership was not flawed, that the fault for the debacle lies elsewhere. The decision also implies that at least the Gandhis believe there still is a party under their leadership, intact. Senior leaders have been charting their own course. As soon as Commerce Minister Anand Sharma sensed rout, he obtained from Sonia the permission to represent the Congress at President Jacob Zuma’s inauguration in South Africa. Shashi Tharoor, with eye always on the main chance, began to publicly wish Narendra Modi were his leader, inviting a rebuke from Mani Shankar Aiyar who went on to say on TV that “Rahul should be allowed to do the good work he is doing”. The greatest security for the Gandhis, one which will keep them on their perch, is that there is no life left in
the rump to ask questions. Those who could have asked questions, like Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia, have been kept outside the paddock. The simple principle of dynasties is: the crown prince must not have a challenger. The queen must never be upstaged. The truth is that the make-belief shrouding the last days of the Gandhis cannot last very much longer. Their saga is not likely to end in tragedy. Tragedies require a quality of heroism which is missing here. Their’s is shaping up to a pathetic end. Are they really waiting for another rout in the state elections? It is very easy for Sonia Gandhi to blame the spectacular defeat on scams, the party’s inability to communicate, unmotivated cadres, debilitating bipolarity at the top, unidentifiable leadership, a formidable list. Will she ever admit to herself that
she was badly advised by a concentric circle of advisers who did not have their fingers on the pulse? It will be an act of great courage to face the unbelievably harsh truth. Never has a political family been so universally hated, despised, loathed. This was part of the energy which became a wave for Modi. Sonia Gandhi must reflect (the young man seems incapable of any reflection) how adoration in 2004, when she refused the prime ministership, turned to such undiluted disgust by 2014. From the very beginning, the Congress president demonstrated her inability to distinguish between loyalty and sycophancy. Remember Oscar Fernandez weeping inconsolably because “Madame” had refused the crown. And the dim Renuka Chaudhury let loose upon chat show audiences as some sort of a Congress intellectual. She too was rewarded for having wept copiously at “Mam’s” refusal of the crown.

40 Indian construction workers kidnapped in Iraq
Baghdad on the brink of collapse?
15 killed in fresh militant attack in Kenya
BAGHDAD: Amidst reports of massive fighting between Iraqi security forces backed by Shiite militia and Sunni militants to take control of the city of Tal Afar in the northern Nineveh province, Sunni militants have attacked Iraq’s largest oil refinery in Salahudin province on June 18, sparking a huge fire, a provincial police source said. Hundreds of gunmen, including the militants linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), an Al Qaeda offshoot, waged an attack at dawn on the refinery compound in Baiji city from several directions with machine guns and mortar rounds, the source said. Earlier, insurgent groups overran the city of Baiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad, as well as large parts of the predominantly Sunni province of Salahudin, including its capital Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad. The deterioration in security situation in Iraq started last week when bloody clashes broke out between the Iraqi security forces and Sunni militants.
NAIROBI: In a fresh attack a day after massacring 48 people in a Kenyan coastal town, Al-Shabaab militants killed 15 people in a village in the same area, police said on June 17. Lamu county Commissioner Stephen Ikua said the militants killed 15 people in Poromoko village Monday night, a day after they massacred 48 people in the Kenyan coastal town of Mpeketoni. “We have received reports of fresh attacks and we have sent a contingent of police officers to establish the number of casualties and nature of attack,” Xinhua quoted Ikua as saying. The attack came despite strong government assurances that it would protect the citizens and arrest the assailants. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for both attacks. In its radio broadcast, the militant group said it carried out fresh attacks in Mpeketoni and killed more than 20 people, including police.

ndia on June 18 said 40 Indians working for a Turkish construction company have been abducted in violence-hit Iraq’s Mosul area which has been taken over by Sunni militants. The external affairs ministry here did not say which militant group had seized the workers. Earlier media reports blamed the abduction on the Sunni insurgents of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) who have seized the cities of Mosul and Tikrit and are advancing menacingly towards capital Baghdad. External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said the workers mostly belonged to the country’s northern states such as Punjab and worked for the Tariq Noor al Huda construction company. He said no ransom call had been received and the Iraq Red Crescent had “indicated to us that they were kidnapped”. He said their current location was not
known. Asked about the safety of the Indians, the spokesperson said they were “trying to establish contact” and that “there are no guarantees”. Asked if the workers were kidnapped while being evacuated, he declined to reveal details.

He said India will not leave any stone unturned in providing help to its nationals in Iraq. He also said that the Indian embassy in Baghdad was not to be shut down. On the situation of the 46 Indian nurses in Tikrit, the spokesperson said the Indian mission is in

The spokesperson also said that 200 Indians in Najaf working for a Turkish company were “feeling uneasy” and wanted to return. The Indian mission is working to bring them back, and the first lot would be leaving Najaf on Friday. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has also made phone calls to the relatives of a number of people stranded in Iraq.

Voting ends in Afghan runoff polls KABUL: Polling in Afghanistan’s presidential runoff election concluded on June 14 evening and counting of ballots has begun, an official said. “The polling, which began 7 a.m. Saturday has ended at 4 p.m.,” Xinhua quoted Independent Election Commission (IEC) commissioner Sareer Ahmad Barmak as saying on June 14. The Afghan election officials said that the election was relatively peaceful, barring some attacks and complaints. The officials said the IEC has taken note of allegations of fraud and all those allegations are being looked into. The runoff election will decide whether former foreign minister
Abdullah Abdullah or former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai leads the country into a new era with declining international military and civilian assistance. The two entered a runoff after none of the eight candidates obtained an outright victory or more than half of the valid votes in the first round held April 5. The Taliban insurgent group fighting the government has vowed to disrupt the election process. At least 10 people, including several security forces, were killed and nearly 100 others were wounded in Taliban attacks, the Public Health Minister Suraya Dalil said.

he Telangana government has decided to officially celebrate Bonalu and Bathukamma, the Hindu folk festivals of the region. The decision was taken at a meeting convened by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao with senior officials and public representatives belonging to various political parties. Excise Minister Padma Rao told reporters that the orders declaring Bonalu and Bathukamma as state festivals as state festivals will be issued soon. The chief minister directed the officials to ensure that the festivals are celebrated in a grand
manner. As the two festivals reflect the culture of Telangana, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government has decided to declare them state festivals. Bonalu is celebrated in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and other parts of the region during the month of ‘Ashada’ (July-August). The women make offerings in the form of food to goddess Mahankali in specially decorated pots. During the month-long festival, people also hold ‘rangam’ or forecasting the future, organize processions and cultural events. ‘Bathukamma’, another key festival of Telangana, is celebrated during September-October. It reflects the rich culture of region.

Comedy might be nasty: Saif Saif Ali Khan, whose movie ‘Humshakals’ releases on June 20, talks about his comedy roles IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctor Saif Ali Khan, awaiting the release of entertainer Humshakals says “comedy can be ‘little dangerous’ if not done well”. Bollywood has been high on sex comedies off late, but when asked if Saif would be game for it, he said: “It will be nice if it’s funny. Comedy is a very liberating thing. Anything can be funny and I feel comedy is a little dangerous because at times there can be no respect or dignity if it’s not shot well.” He said, “It should not be dirty. There is nothing wrong with a sex comedy because it is something people are nervous to talk

Meanwhile, the actor is busy promoting Humshakals, which features a slew of actors including Riteish Deshmukh, Ram Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. Saif says the Sajid Khan-directorial is for the wider audience. “I wanted to work with Sajid and we (actors) should all come out of our comfort zone...Sajid works hard to entertain people. Humshakals is his kind of comedy and that’s the idea — you have to make a film which is wider and Sajid is one of the top names in the film industry,” Saif said.
No more item numbers please, says Vidya IANS, MUMBAI

ctress Vidya Balan, who featured in an item number in the 2012 release Ferrari Ki Sawaari, says she won’t take up dance numbers anymore as she doesn’t enjoy them. At an event here when the actress was asked if she will be seen doing any item number in future, she said: “No, I will not do item numbers as I don’t enjoy them. You will not see me doing any item number now.” Bobby Jasoos also features Ali Fazal and is directed by Samar Sheikh and produced by Dia Mirza and her fiance Sahil Sangha under Born Free Entertainment. ‘Badlapur’ surprises actress Huma Qureshi NEW DELHI: When actress Huma Qureshi agreed to be a part of Sriram Raghavan’s directorial titled Badlapur, she wasn’t aware of the place by the same name. She got intrigued by the title of the film and quizzed the team on the same. The Delhi girl was pleasantly surprised on learning that Badlapur is a place in Mumbai. The title of her next film caught her fancy so much that she wanted to visit the place. She recently made a day trip to Badlapur and had “fun”. “Yes. Badlapur is an interesting name. It was a fun trip,” Huma said in a statement. She will soon start shooting for the film which also features Varun Dhawan. The Gangs Of Wasseypur actress, who recently bought a new house, is trying her hand at being an interior designer for her place. It’s Hollywood calling for actor Sana Khan
Fugly: At last a social credit showcase
MUMBAI: Sana Khan has been lying low after featuring in Salman Khan-starrer Jai Ho, but that’s because she’s been waiting for the right project to come her way. Now, the grapevine is abuzz that the Bigg Boss 6 beauty is heading to Hollywood. Sana, who has featured in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films in the past, has now given her nod to a project to be directed by a “whiz kid director from Hollywood”, a source told IANS. The source said that Sana will be “essaying the title role of the queen in a magnum opus costume drama”, which deals with the “life of one of the royal figures from Hyderabad.
Film Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Mohit Marwah, Kiara Advani, Vijendra Singh, Arfi Lamba; Director: Kabir Sadanand: Rating: ****
L
et’s first get the picture right. Contrary to what the trailers and promotional images suggest, Fugly is not a Fukrey — friendly flick about four friends having a ball in life. This film means business. Light on top and substantial underneath, this is the Rang De Basanti of the post-Narendra Modi era. Thoughtful and at times brilliant, it tells us a great deal about the state of a culture and people searching for reasons to keep the spirit of nationalism alive as selfserving corruption grows all around. Fugly is the cinema of social awakening. It tackles issues such as gay prostitution, khaki-clad fascism and the excess of television
journalism, perhaps cramming in too many social issues in order to make the subject relevant and res-
onant. And yet nowhere does the director seem to bite into more than he can chew. In one of the many striking sequences that coil themselves around the four young lives with impetuous intensity, we see random images of people on the city streets misbehaving mostly with women. Milind Joga’s camera seems to move concernedly through the streets of Delhi and Gurgaon in search of answers for the moral bankruptcy around us. This then, is the portrait of a nation grappling with damnation as seen through the eyes of four impetuous youngsters. The actors get it right from the word go. Right away, let’s applaud the director for
giving us four bright newcomers, two of whom are natural born stars. Erratic and over emphatic at times, what works for the narrative is its supremely active heart and soul. The large chunk of the film when Devi gets sexually humiliated by the neighborhood grocer and her friends’ outrage leading to unforeseen tragedy, is exceptionally even in tone and sure handed in execution. But then, various debauched politicians show up to mess up our protagonists’ lives. The ending will shock and move audiences. Two of the actors Mohit Marwah and Kiara Advani are star material. This film possesses a very rare virtue. A conscience. — Subhash K Jha

Nothing ‘Preity’ about ‘Ness’ affair MUMBAI: She may not be giving any blockbuster but actress Preity Zinta shocked the nation when industrialist Ness Wadia was on June 14 booked over an alleged molestation charge made by his former girlfriend and actress Preity Zinta. The Bombay Dyeing scion denied the charges, while Preity said “I’ve truth by my side”. The first information report (FIR) was lodged on the basis of a detailed written complaint handed over at the Marine Drive police station by Zinta late June 12. But Wadia has said the charges were “baseless” and he was “shocked at the complaint”. An investigating officer said police have started calling witnesses and will also scan the CCTV footage of the alleged incident which took place May 30 in Mumbai during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. On June 12 night, Zinta, in a written complaint accused Wadia, whom she dated for five years till 2009, of molesting and abusing her. Among other things, Zinta has accused Wadia of grabbing her hand and abusing her during a cricket match at Wankhede Stadium here. Wadia issued a statement on June 13 denying her allegations and termed it as “totally false and baseless.” In a twist to the case, the Wadia group has filed a police complaint claiming they received threatening calls and a text message from an underworld don warning that their “business will be in trouble” if the actress was harassed. A secretary to Nusli Wadia received calls on his cell phone from a person.
Fearless Preity MUMBAI: Be it off screen or on screen, Preity has often showed her daring side. Here is a list of bold acts of Preity: n In 2000, Preity played the role of an unwanted mother in Kya Kehna. In Dil Se, she shocked movie buffs and made Shah Rukh blush by asking him if he was a virgin. n In 2001, she played a prostitute who turns a surrogate mother to Salman Khan’s child in AbbasMustan’s Chori Chori Chupke Chupke. n In 2003, she stunned the nation by testifying against the underworld in court. n In 2005, Preity filed a defamation suit against a Mumbai tabloid for publishing a transcript of a tape allegedly featuring the voice of Salman Khan speaking in bad tones about her. n In 2007, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi accused Preity of being the cause of her marriage with Shekhar Kapoor breaking up.

GREYSLAKE COUNTY MARKS FATHER’S DAY WITH RITUALS
E
BY A STAFF WRITER
nthusiastic Lake County Indians celebrated ‘Father’s Day’ in a Hindu Way with all the religious rituals when the people in different countries were celebrating it in their own way by giving gifts, spending quality time, and having sumptuous lunch or dinner with fathers. The motive of the temple is to celebrate all events in a traditional way so that the younger generation can learn and preserve our age old culture, values, and traditions. Colorfully dressed devotees with their young children gathered in the temple with a special spirit on this event celebrating fatherhood. Devi and Sankat Haran Chaturthi Abhishekam to Lord Ganesh were performed by Pandit Joshi Ji with all the rituals and mantras. Later Satyanarayana Katha Pujan was performed by temple secretary Natesiyer with his family, relatives, friends, and temple devotees to obtain the blessings of Jagatpita Vishnu under the direction of Pandit Ganesh Ji.
Niles cops educate seniors about scams
T
BY A STAFF WRITER
he Niles police have put together a program to educate seniors about scam artists who prey on the elderly by teaching seniors how to protect themselves. The department completed the first round of the Senior Crime Reduction Awareness Measures Program on May 22. The next class is set for September 8 at 10 am at the Niles Senior Center. Seniors who attended monthly classes during the past eight months learned about such topics as identity theft, confidence scams, pigeon drops and bank examiner scams, home repair fraud, ruse-entry burglary, burglary, personal safety and driving safety. “Mayor [Andrew] Przybylo saw a need for this in his experience with crimes targeting the elderly,” Sgt. Robert Tornabene said. “He was concerned. He made one of the trademarks of his campaign that he was going to try to do as much as he could to eradicate crimes against seniors.” Przybylo asked the police department to come up with a comprehensive program to educate seniors. In addition to the monthly sessions, the department sends out a followup letter to participants that reviews the material and presents any new scams as they are uncovered. The monthly sessions include role-playing to enable seniors to learn how to cope with scammers. “We had a door donated by Home Depot. We would bring a senior up and have them be home and go through the whole scene with somebody trying to talk their way into the senior’s home,” Tornabene said. Additionally, the department provides seniors with reminder stickers for both the door and the phone with a checklist of what to do. Participants will also get yard signs to raise awareness of the program. Currently the follow-up letters go only to those who participate in the program. Tornabene said there are about 7,500 seniors in the village, according to Census figures. In addition to the classes, Tornabene said the department has taken presentations to various men’s clubs and women’s groups. “We’re doing a lot of outreach to get the information they need [out there] without added a lot of cost,” said Tornabene, who began putting the program together last August.
Melodious bhajans sung by Anu Gupta, Rita Patel, and other devotees created a spiritual atmosphere in the temple. A group of young boys and girls honored more than a hundred fathers as living Gods on this earth by washing their feet and offering them with tilak, pushpakshata, Arati, uttariya, fruits, and a special poem ‘Our Gratitude to Fathers’ written by Geetha Patil.
All children and fathers felt happy and jubilant on this occasion. This celebration gave an opportunity for children to recognize and appreciate the social, economic, cultural, and spiritual contributions that fathers and father figures make to their lives. Both priests blessed Kumar Natesiyer and his wife Madhumati for their Silver Jubilee wedding anniversary. Pt. Joshi Ji in his Ashirvachanam
to devotees, and especially to youngsters, stated that fathers’ day was not the one day of the year when dad gets to be Father of the Year or Star of the House–for a day. He said a mantra from Taittiriya Upanishad, “maatru devo bhava, pitru devo bhava, aachaarya devo bhava, atithi devo bhava” which conveys the “code of conduct” for Hindu society. It means everyone should pay respects to Mother, Father, Guru and Guest since they are all forms of God. Here Atithi, meaning guest, includes every other person in the world. This sloka suggests that oneness and equality comes into existence by regarding every individual as the supreme power. Those who practice this mantra in their lives obtain happiness, comfort, and a contented life. Pt. Joshi Ji thanked every devotee and children who participated in this meaningful event to develop paternal bonds, and recognize the influence of fathers in society. Maha Mangalarati was followed by delicious Maha Prasadam to all devotees.
Indian guilty of murders of wife, 2 kids BY A STAFF WRITER
P
ONTIAC (MI) — An Indian American computer scientist who fled to his native India after the 2008 slayings of his wife and two children in their suburban Detroit home has been convicted of first-degree murder in their deaths. An Oakland Circuit Court jury on June 12 returned the verdict in the case of Lakshminivasa Nerusu, 46, who was arrested in February 2013. He testified during the trial that he “blacked out” and didn’t remember what happened the day of the killings and must have been insane. Defense lawyer Lawrence Kaluzny said Nerusu was insane at the time of the killings. “There is no getting around that the cause of those deaths was my client, Mr. Nerusu,” Kaluzny told jurors when the trial started. “In spite of what he did, he is still entitled to a fair trial.” Under Michigan laws, Nerusu will receive a mandatory sentence of life in

prison without possibility of parole. Judge Nanci Grant scheduled his sentencing for July 3. Jayalakshmi Nerusu, 37, the couple’s
14-year-old daughter Tejasvi and their 12-year-old son Siva were killed on October 13, 2008. The police in Novi checking on the family’s welfare found their bodies two weeks later. Authorities said domestic problems preceded the deaths. According to prosecutors, Lakshminivasa Nerusu first stabbed his wife 59 times, then waited several hours for his children to arrive home from school. He slit the throat of his daughter after she got off a school bus, and 40 minutes later slashed his son’s throat, prosecutors said. “The man who was supposed to love them, care for them and protect them was the same man who brought their young lives to an horrific end,” Assistant Prosecutor Tricia Dare said before testimony began in the case. Nerusu, an unemployed software programmer, fled to India the day after the killings but was arrested and extradited in 2013.
Family sees foul play in death of Indian student BY A STAFF WRITER
C
hicago (IL) — The family of a 19-year-old Indian American student, who was found dead in February under mysterious circumstances in Carbondale, Illinois, has alleged foul play and disputed the cause of his death given by the police. The results of a second autopsy commissioned by Pravin Varughese’s family showed that the Southern Illinois University student died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, even as authorities maintain that he died of hypothermia with no evidence of foul play. The body of Varughese, of Morton Grove, was found on February 18 in a wooded area in Carbondale about a week after he went missing. The findings by independent forensic pathologist Ben Margolis raise more questions in the mysterious death of Varughese. The sophomore criminal justice major
suffered four different blows to the face and head, all of which could not have been caused by a single impact, such as falling on a rock or hitting a tree. Varughese’s body also showed an injury
to his forearm and his left thigh, Margolis said, as well as bruises below his knees and scratch marks that could have been caused by the difficult terrain. Margolis, however, stopped short of issuing a determination of how Varughese sustained the head injuries, saying he still needed to see initial police and coroner records. “The cause of death is blunt force injury, but the cause of those injuries is pending further investigation,” he said. Varughese’s mother, meanwhile, said Margolis’ report gives credence to her questions of how authorities have handled her son’s death investigation. “It gives me a feeling that I’m not crazy,” she said. “The instinct as a mother, and the knowledge as a nurse, I think it paid off.” County coroner Thomas Kupferer had said that the forensic pathologist who performed the initial autopsy did not indicate any blunt force injuries.

HICAGO (IL) -- A capacity audience was treated to a few hours of scintillating Bolllywood hits by a quartet of talented singers of contrasting styles in a program aptly called Yaadon Ki Baarat on June 13 at the Meadows Club. The program was presented by Hi India Publications and supported by The Meadows Club, Big Suchir Restaurant and Hina Trivedi. The show was produced by Classic Productions from Mumbai. The evening commenced with a welcome by the publisher of Hi India, Hemant Brahmbhatt, who acknowledged the various sponsors and supporters of the concert and also introduced Kamlesh Bhuptani, the national promoter of the concert. The concert itself was narrated by singer Rupali Ghogare who delighted the audience with her intros and accompanying couplets. She also entertained the audience with her solos and duets with the male singers, the evocative Shrikant Narayan and the flamboyant Apoorva Shah. The other singer was the Ramleela fame Bhoomi Trivedi, a music reality show winner,
who recently made a smashing debut in Bollywood with her sizzling hit from the movie Ram Leela. The accompanying orchestra led by the ebullient Milind Dabholkar on the keyboards lent substance and zing to the vocalists and came in for a lot of plaudits from the singers and attendees alike. Mumbai singer Shrikant Narayan, who has quite a reputation in the music circles as the voice of the great Indian crooner Mohammed Rafi, regaled the audience with some hit numbers from the last six decades. Solos and duets were sung with passion and flair as he revived memories of the glorious past of Bollywood music and the great Rafi. It was indeed a treat. Apoorva Shah, a singer of the current generation, was skillful and flamboyant, a la the present-day artistes who are constantly multi-tasking. He mixed the new with the old as he sang hits of the current generation mixed generously with the popular numbers of the seventies and eighties. The great Kishore Kumar’s flair was mixed with the pyrotechnics of someone like Rahat Fateh Ali as Apoorva justified his talent as a winner of some premier Indian music reality

Shrikant Narayan’s velvet voice evokes memories of Mohd Rafi
C
BY A STAFF WRITER
HICAGO (IL) -- Shrikant Narayan’s singing prowess goes back to 1986 when he melodiously sang a Marathi song, ‘Dol Doltay Warya Vari’. This particular song reached double platinum status in India that year. Versatility and style symbolize this Indian playback singer. As a child, he took part in several music competitions, but it was not until attending his college in Andheri, Mumbai that he latched on to his talent of singing. He graduated in 1990 and became a full-time pharmaceutical representative. It became apparent to Narayan that music and performing was his first love and left the pharma industry in 1997.
Narayan, who is gifted with a Mohammad Rafi-like talent with his voice reminding his ardent fans of the glorious late Rafi generation, made them relive those moments when he lit up the stage at Meadows Club during a recent performance on June 13. Immaculately clad in a black Pathani dress, Narayan sang Rafi songs to enthrall an eager audience. The evening included some memorable songs like ‘Tujhe jeevan kee dor se baandh liya hai’, ‘Tum jo mil gaaye ho’, ‘Chhalkaa Ye jaam’, etc. He touched an emotional chord with the iconic “O duniyan ke rakhwale” and the crowd erupted in a thunderous applause for his performance. Narayan has been awarded the Maharashtra Kalabhushan award by the Government of Maharashtra and he is also the recipient of the prestigious Jan Parishad Award from the Madhya Pradesh Government. With a voice that evokes fond memories of the legendary Mohammed Rafi, it is no surprise that he has won scores of supporters all over. Narayan is endowed with a rich and resonant baritone which he has utilized so nicely to reach the hearts of music aficionados not only in India but also in the United States of America. He holds the distinction of performing immortal gems of Rafi for 12 hours at an event “Pukaarta Chalaa hoon main” in Mumbai on Christmas Day in 2012. It was Narayan’s passion that led him to sing for 12 hours which ultimately fetched him an award from
Punjabi Youth Graduation and Scholarships Awards Night
Limca Book of Records. When asked about Rafi and the similarities, Narayan was quick to respond: “Rafisaab ke jaisa gana mushkil hee nahin, namumkin hai”. Narayan is an extremely modest and soft-spoken individual with a talent that he has utilized to the fullest. If one listens to him with eyes closed one could visualize Rafisaab singing those vintage melodies. He is also privileged of having Rafisaab’s daughter Nasreen and son-in-law Ahmed Mehraj attending some of his shows. He values their presence at his show immensely and is quite proud of those moments. When comparing current music to yesteryears, Narayan said, “there used to be a lot of rehearsals. It would take a week or longer for one song. Life has become a fast lane. People bring tracks from home and perform. It would take 150 people to make one track and now it may be down to one person. There is a big transition of music.” Narayan’s all-time favorite song is “suhani raat dhal chooki’ from film ‘Dulari’ with music by Naushad. Narayan is a family person and takes a keen interest in his 11-year-old daughter Vaishnavi and her musical and artistic talent. He is also blessed with a most supportive and encouraging life parter and wife Maithreyi who is a banker by profession. Narayan has recorded a dhoon on Marathi devotional songs. He willsoon come up with a Marathi album. He has also freshly recorded a song dedicated to Rafisaab call “Phir Rafi”.

HICAGO (IL): The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS) hosted its 14th annual ‘Punjabi Youth Graduation and Scholarships Awards Night’ on June 8 at Viceroy of India Banquet Hall, Lombard, Illinois. Punjabi graduates, Class of 2014 were honored, PCS Scholarships were awarded, and “Rangla Punjab 2014” cultural program participants were appreciated. More than 250 guests attended the event. The guests of honor were about 25 Class of 2014 graduates from the Punjabi community. The celebrations included keynote address by Dr. Birinder Singh Marwah, chief of geriatrics at Advocate Masonic Medical Center and also chief medical officer for Symphony Health Care, administrative director of Seasons Hospice, past president of the India Medical Association (IMA) and past chairman of the PCS. Dr. Marwah was an inspiring speaker who spoke from the heart with memorable teaching moments he experienced in his own personal life. His eight-point thoughtful and inspiring speech hit home with the young graduates and
the other audience alike. The motivational student speaker was Dr. Jaswinder Pal Singh who is completing his residency in Neurology at the Loyola University Medical Center and will be joining a fellowship in Clinical Neurology starting July 2014. His success story against many odds along his way was simply heart touching. His key message was persistence and resilience, never to give up in adversity and eventually success will kiss your feet. The participants of ‘Rangla Punjab 2014’, a PCS Annual Vaisakhi cultural program, received appreciation awards. The party was free for the graduates and Rangla Punjab participants, with family and friends admitted at a nominal cost. The celebration included recognition awards, certificates, scholarships, keynote address, cake cutting ceremony, DJ music, dancing, networking, and delicious Indian cuisine. All the performing artists and emcees of “Rangla Punjab 2014” the PCS Vaisakhi cultural show were recognized and awarded trophies for their hard work, participation, and excellent performances.
Laddi Singh the Democratic party candidate for State of Illinois Representative from 54th district also attended the event. PCS $1000 scholarship this year was awarded to Pravleen Kaur Bains of Grayslake North High School. Pravleen won for her high scholastic achievements and also participation in community service and Punjabi cultural activities. PCS $750 scholarship was won by Nathan Kalhon of Buffalo Grove High School. The scholarships were presented to the winners by Dr. Birinder Singh Marwaha and Harinder Pal Singh (M.I.T.S.). Amrit Kaur Thind was honored with a $500 award for her volunteer services to PCS programs by Dr. Amarjit Singh. “The purpose of this program is to promote higher education among our next generation. Our youth need appreciation, encouragement, and professional guidance,” said Rajinder Singh Mago the PCS Board of Governors. The event sponsors Harinder Pal Singh MITS, Surinder Kumar Jain of Viceroy of India Banquets, were also honored with plaques presented to them by the PCS Officials.

EXAS — Through “sweat therapy,” Barjinder Singh, an assistant professor at the University of Houston-Victoria, hopes to change the way the world deals with professional and personal stress. “People who exercise increase their selfefficacy, their self-confidence and feel they have the ability and power to triumph over obstacles in their lives,” Singh said. His research has shown that through exercise, people reduce the strains and stress they encounter on a daily basis, and even boost their ability to deal with work-family conflict and restore balance in these two areas. Although the common excuse is lack of time, people who want to create a positive difference in their lives through exercise will make time. “It’s a matter of choice,” the Indian American professor said.

Grand-finale riddle Is it too much risk giving new comers a chance to close a fashion show? Or is a grand finale not about fashion in the first place? NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI
W
ho is a grand-finale designer? Biggies mostly bag the opportunity. Why is it so? Experts opine that final shows are more about Bollywood presence and, therefore, celebrated names are roped in for the glamour clamor. Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) and Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) are major events of the Indian fashion industry, estimated to be worth about $120 million. Young names like Kallol Datta and designer duo Pankaj and Nidhi were picked up for LFW winter-festive 2012’s grand finale, but established designers mostly bring the curtain down at these two prestigious events. Continuing the trend, B-town favorite Manish Malhotra has been named the grand finale designer for the forthcoming edition of LFW Winter/Festive 2014. This is not the first time he has been chosen as a closing designer for a show. Why can’t new talent get the honor? Internationally-acclaimed designer Falguni Peacock, who works with her husband Shane, says such decisions are taken because the events are “sponsored shows purely for fashion week hype and value for the sponsor”. “They rope in Bollywood actors for media coverage, which is why season after season fashion weeks are losing their main essence,” Falguni, whose clientele includes international icons such as Latino star Jennifer Lopez and pop icon Lady Gaga, told IANS in an email interview from Mumbai. Shane added that fashion weeks today are purely for “entertainment”. There are designers who’re known to
rope in Bollywood celebrities as showstoppers or as guests adding glamour to front row seats. Some of the regulars are Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Arjun Rampal, Karan Johar and Sonam Kapoor. In a situation where many allege that seniors overshadow budding talents, Malhotra’s name didn’t excite his colleagues, including National Award winning designer Wendell Rodricks, who feels “ideally, a fashion week finale designer should be someone known for creativity.” But he clarified that he has nothing personal against Malhotra. “What I am alarmed about is this musical chairs at LFW between him (Malhotra), Sabyasachi (Mukherjee) and a FDCI (Fashion Design Council of India) designer. It goes around in a circle for opening off site and finale. This in turn sets a bad precedent Actor Sonam Kapoor at the Rohit Bal show at the Aamby of politics, which other Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2013 in New Delhi. designers detest,” Rodricks told IANS. Supporting LFW’s decision, he added: “There are many LFW designers, who “Fashion week has picked up Malhotra have supported LFW for many years, but because he is the right choice to bring they are not acknowledged for their con- best attendees, celebrities, top journalists tribution. LONDON: Do you often drive back home on your own at dangerous speed after a bout of drinking? You must be drinking alone most of the time. According to a new study, those who drink alone are more prone to risky behavior than those who drink moderately in a group. “Social interaction in groups can reduce the tendency of individual drinkers to accept risks,” said psychologist Tim Hopthrow from University of Kent in Britain in a study. “Alcohol consumers accepted more risk when deciding alone but the least risk when deciding as a group,” he added. “We think that this is because drinkers in groups monitor one another closely, becoming more cautious when directly asked whether to take a risk,” Hopthrow said. The study involved 101 participants aged between 18 -30 who were in groups. The researchers compared groups of people who were just under the drunk-driving limit with groups that had not consumed any alcohol. “We know that individuals are more likely to engage in risky behavior when they are intoxicated, whether it be having unprotected sex, or engaging in violent or other criminal activity,” Rose Meleady from University of East Anglia in Britain noted. “This research demonstrates that drinking as part of a social group may mitigate the effects of alcohol consumption on risk-taking,” Meleady concluded in the study published in the journal Addiction.
Make-up melt-proof tricks you ought to try IANS, LOS ANGELES
H
ot and sweaty season is often frowned upon and is called as the make-up meltdown time of year. But it doesn’t have to be. Get your hands on the right tools. Here are a few tips from Hollywood’s make-up artists, reports eonline.com: Use eye pencil: Actress Amy Adams’ make-up artist Stephen Sollitto suggests skipping eyeshadow altogether in the summer time. So shun creams, pots and powders. Instead use waterproof pencils and shade in your whole lid. Find a multi-purpose product: Instead of layering onto your complexion, find a power foundation that has built-in SPF and is waterproof, says Sollitto. Actress Jennifer Garner’s make-up artist Fiona Stiles says if you must add hydration to your complexion, “skip moisturizer. Just use sunscreen”. Primer for eyes: Stiles thinks using a face primer is “an unnecessary step”. If you do want to use eyeshadow she suggests first swiping on eye primer to prevent creases.

‘Organic’, ‘natural’ packaged food may be unhealthy
US teens losing interest in sex, smoking: Survey
NEW YORK: Do you get lured by healthy words such as “antioxidant-rich”, “whole grain”, “organic” and so on into buying more packaged food? Be cautious, as these may actually lead you to put on extra kilos. “That false sense of health as well as a failure to understand the information presented in nutrition facts panels on packaged food may be contributing to the obesity epidemic worldwide including the US,” new research says. “Food marketers are exploiting consumer desires to be healthy by marketing products as nutritious when, in fact, they are not,” cautioned Temple Northup, assistant professor from the Jack J. Valenti school of communication at University of Houston (UH). The study examined the degree to which consumers link marketing terms on food packaging with good health. It found that consumers tend to view food products labelled with health-related

H
ere’s good news for American parents. A youth survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found that lesser numbers of high school students are reporting sexual intercourse, smoking or fighting episodes compared to earlier findings. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) in 2013, 46.8 percent of teenagers in grades nine to 12 have had sexual intercourse — unchanged since 2001. In the 1990s, the same survey found 54 percent teenagers were involved in sexual intercourse. Cigarette smoking among high school students has dropped to 15.7 percent, the lowest in 22 years. Nearly 25 percent of students said they have been involved in a ‘It is encouraging physical fight in the that high school past year — down students are from 42 percent making better reported in 1991, the findings revealed. health choices Students in grades such as not 9-12 were questioned smoking and not about alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug usage, having sex’ sexual activity, violence, dietary and exercise behaviors and suicide-related behaviors. “It is encouraging that high school students are making better health choices such as not fighting, not smoking and not having sex,” said Thomas Frieden, director of CDC. However, obesity and overweight remained a problem. About a third to 47 percent of teenagers are struggling with their weight, the survey found.
euphemisms as healthier than those without them. The research also showed that the nutrition facts panels printed on food packaging do little to counteract that buzzword marketing. Words like organic, antioxidant, natural and gluten-free imply some sort of healthy benefit.“When people stop to think about it, there is nothing healthy about antioxidant Cherry 7-Up — it is mostly filled with high fructose syrup or sugar. But its name is giving you this clue that there is some sort of health benefit to something that is not healthy at all.”
Obese kids at diabetes risk IANS, London
D
iseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure that people thought only a few years ago were common only among adults are now found affecting children too. And obese children are at a higher risk. For the study, researchers compared fat cell composition and biology in lean and obese children and adolescents. Obese kids are more vulnerable to these diseases as researchers have found that when children become obese, begin-
ning as early as age six, there was an increase in the number of adipose cells (fat cells). These were larger in size than the cells in the bodies of lean children. “Obese children start to have not only more but also larger fat cells at a very young age. This is associated with increased inflammation and linked to impaired metabolic function,” said Antje Korner, a professor at University Children’s Hospital at Leipzig in Germany. The researchers also found evidence of dysfunction of the fat cells in obese children which can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes and other problems such as high blood pressure.
Your week ahead... Aries The first day of the week will be enthusiastic, spontaneous and adventurous. Tuesday and Wednesday, barely noticing how boring they are. Thursday, the pace picks up again. Friday might be sacrificing. Weekend will be exciting with family.
Taurus You have an itch to buy something, but rushing out at the start of the week and plunking down cash on the first thing that catches your eye will lead to regret. You’ve been here before. Try to take your time this week
Gemini You have an itch to buy something, but rushing out at the start of the week and plunking down cash on the first thing that catches your eye will lead to regret. You’ve been here before. Try to take your time this week
Cancer On Monday take your time to think things through before you say anything or even react. Friday, if you feel like being a daredevil. Be like a daredevil. Sunday is a day of glorious new beginnings.
Leo Your ability to turn a ho-hum outing into the most glorious event anyone’s ever been involved with is unrivaled. Finish whatever you’ve got to get done at work. Don’t expect kudos. Make a pie. Sleep.
Virgo Money issues are the most pressing things on your list at the start of the week. Your spirits are high and your friends are better than ever, but this financial stuff is a drag. Cash is just tight right now.
35
(June 22-28) Libra A certain relationship occupies your time. It might be romantic. It might be work-related. But it’s all-consuming. How things turn out between you two depends largely on you and the kind of energy you bring to the situation
Scorpio If someone looks like they’re in the mood for a fight early in the week, walk the other way. You can work out your differences another day. Conflict is still in the air. You’re a Gandhi figure with lots of nonviolent solutions.
Sagittarius Who’s up for a game of dodgeball? That’s the question on your lips at the start of the week. No more of this Scrabble business. You want an outside game, something to get your blood jumping.
Capricorn Some distant worry occupies part of your brain. Thursday is a veritable symphony of cell phones ringing. People love to gab on Fridays, you might even say to someone, ‘Get on with it.’ Try not to say it rudely. Romantic weekend.
Aquarius Nothing changes about the outside world, but you order its shapes differently in your mind. These discoveries you’re making are subtle; nevertheless, they persist. A revelation in your love life is really something this week
Pisces You appreciate the beauty of low-level clouds, but you don’t appreciate being within one at the start of the week. How are you supposed to see where you’re going? This happens now and again, these moments of blind bewilderment.
