he 12 percent increase in the BJP’s vote share at the national level between 2009, when it secured 18.8 percent, and 2014, when this rose to 31, showed that a fairly large section of those who did not constitute the party’s traditional support base had voted for it. The reason for their support is known — Narendra Modi’s promise of rapid economic growth. According to a recent survey, Modi’s approval rating remains high. However, it is a curious feature of present-day politics that support for the prime minister cannot ipso facto be equated with support for his party. This strange outlook of the voters was highlighted by the Delhi assembly elections where the BJP was badly mauled. But, otherwise, the party was able to hold its own in states like Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand and even made inroads in Jammu and Kashmir. Although the party appears to be well-entrenched, there is at least a section of its non-traditional supporters who may have become

uneasy about some aspects of the government’s policies. While they will be hoping that it will pursue the promised economic reforms, they will also wonder whether an increasingly prosperous India will not also harbour intolerant sectarian elements. What is more, these may not be driven by anti-Muslim sentiments alone as at the time of the BJP’s emergence from the margins of pol-

itics to centre-stage in the 1990s, but by attitudes involving minorities other than the Muslims which can also open up a divide between sections of the Hindus themselves, such as between vegetarians and non-vegetarians. The meat-ban controversy in Mumbai has been largely defused by a judicial directive allowing the sale of meat. But what the uproar has shown is how the BJP's record can

be hit by the various divisive impulses which are coming to the fore. Mercifully, the apprehensions of communal acrimony have subsided because the government has apparently compelled the saffron hotheads to cool down. The attacks on churches have stopped though not the killing of rationalists. But other issues which should have been allowed to remain very much in the background have

raised their heads. Vegetarianism is one of them and the promotion of Hindi another. An RSS mouthpiece, Panchjanya, has argued that English should be “chased away” and Hindi encouraged “to become an organ of Bharat’s self-respect, progress and pride”. If such observations are regarded as not representative of official views, this cannot be said of union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma’s statements on imposing a ban on the sale of meat during the nine-day Navratri festival, making Hindi compulsory in schools and including Ramayana and Mahabharata in the school curriculum, but not the Bible and Quran since these do not reflect India’s “soul”. His most quotable quote, however, was the observation that the former president, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was a nationalist “despite being a Muslim”. Carrying on from where the culture minister had left off, Home Minister Rajnath Singh has ordered that all files should be signed in Hindi. It is yet to be seen whether these diktats are floaters intended to test the public mood.

WASHINGTON: India and the US kicked off a crucial dialogue here with the US leaders saying America wants to be “India’s best friend” and India asserting that their relationship is defined by natural synergy of democracies. The assertions were made at a business conclave on September 21 on the eve of the first Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. “Our goal is to become India’s best friend,” US Vice President Joe Biden said addressing the 40th Leadership summit of US-India Business Council

Indian tech industry does not take away US jobs ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

D

ispelling the myth that Indian tech companies take away jobs from US professionals, a new report has said the Indian tech industry contributed nearly 411,000 jobs to the US economy this year. The Indian tech industry also helped American firms to bring better, innovative, cost-competitive solutions to improve their global market, said the report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM). Titled “Contributions of India’s Tech Industry to the US Economy”, the report was released by India’s Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman here on September

21 ahead of the first Indo-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. According to the report, Indiabased IT companies providing services to American businesses and

other customers invested more than $2 billion in 2011-2013; paid $22.5 billion in taxes to the US Treasury in the last five years; and today support more than direct and indirect

411,000 jobs in the US. A majority of these jobs are held by US citizens and permanent residents. It also documented charitable activities by Indian IT services companies in the US through volunteers, scholarships and grants such as a $35 million gift from Tata Consultancy Services to Carnegie Mellon University last month. Sitharaman said Indian IT organizations benefit from access to the US market, “just as American IT organizations benefit from their investments and operations in India”. “This momentum is surely going to increase manifold with new partnership opportunities emerging in the areas of Digital India and Smart Cities for US technology firms.”

US, India launch ‘ease of doing business’ group

Obama eager to meet Modi: Kerry

Fact sheet issued at the end of dialogue notes that India-US bilateral trade has grown from $19 billion in 2000 to over $100 billion in 2014 ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

A

s India and the US work to increase their bilateral trade five fold to $500 million, they have launched a joint work stream on the Ease of Doing Business while continuing discussions on a bilateral investment treaty (BIT). The launch of the work stream was announced on the conclusion of the first US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue here Tuesday. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman co-chaired the dialogue with their US counterparts Secretary of State John Kerry and Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker. The two sides have also agreed to support the efforts of the Harvard Business School and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad to develop a cluster map.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and India’s Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj.

This tool will help Indian companies integrate into global supply chains, strengthen India’s economy and better enable American companies to identify markets for their products and services in India. Launch of a private sector-led Inno-

vation Forum was also announced. It will serve as an additional avenue through which the two governments seek private sector feedback and input for bilateral discussions. A fact sheet issued at the end of the dialogue noted that India-US

bilateral trade has grown from $19 billion in 2000 to over $100 billion in 2014. US exports to India totalled $38 billion last year, supporting an estimated 181,000 US jobs. Cumulative Indian foreign direct investment in the US totalled $7.8 billion in 2014; US foreign direct investment into India was $28 billion. US-India CEO Forum offered suggestions in key areas such as business climate, smart cities and infrastructure financing, supply chain integration (including cold chain), aerospace/defense, and renewable energy among other topics. The US Commerce Department’s SelectUSA initiative and the Silicon Valley chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) have signed a memorandum of intent to work together to provide Indian entrepreneurs the data and assistance they need to facilitate their expansion into the United States.

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama is very much looking forward to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations next week, US Secretary of State John Kerry said as India and the US began a crucial dialogue here today. The two sides would be discussing some of the most complicated issues of the day, said Kerry as he and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj led their high-level delegations for the first India-US strategic and commercial dialogue at the State Department. Noting that Obama and Modi had elevated the dialogue from strategic to strategic and commercial to boost their commercial ties during the US president’s January visit to India, Sushma Swaraj said she was very hopeful that the dialogue would be very productive and meaningful.

‘Diplomacy Partnership’ 34 US lawmakers welcome Modi’s US visit to align stands IANS, WASHINGTON

W

Over the last few years, the US has signed more than $10 billion in defense sales to India.

WASHINGTON: Reflecting their dramatically expanded political, economic and strategic cooperation, India and the US have announced a new Diplomacy Partnership aimed at more closely aligning their strategic perspectives, diplomatic training, and engagements around the world. The new partnership was announced at the conclusion of the first US-India Strategic and Commercial Dialogue. The Diplomacy Partnership includes a new Policy Planning Dialogue to share perspectives on strategic challenges and opportunities. The Diplomacy Partnership also will familiarize the two sides’ diplomatic corps with each other through site visits by institute staff and diplomats, and by the exchange of best practices

in diplomatic training. As part of the Diplomacy Partnership, the US and India will strengthen and expand their consultations on the full range of regional and functional diplomatic issues. Ten years ago, defense trade between the US and India was virtually non-existent. Over the last few years, the US has signed more than $10 billion in defense sales to India. Visa applications for Indian students have increased by 202 percent to 92,156 in FY 2015. US visitors to India have nearly doubled from 611,165 visitors in 2005 to 1,123,444 in 2015. Indian students account for the second-largest group of foreign students in the US.

elcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Silicon Valley, 34 US lawmakers, including Ami Bera, the only Indian American in Congress, say it would showcase Indians’ contributions to the US technology industry. In a letter to Modi welcoming him on his second visit to the US and his first visit to the West Coast, Bera, who is Co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, and other lawmakers highlighted the value of his Silicon Valley trip. Modi is visiting California and

touring several Silicon Valley companies this week, including Facebook, Google, and Tesla, the letter noted. “We look forward to your upcoming trip to California, which marks the first time an Indian head

of government has visited the Golden State in 33 years,” they wrote. “This trip will help showcase the exciting contributions Indians and Indian Americans make to the US technology industry.”

India, US to step up war against terror IANS, WASHINGTON

E

ven as recognizing the threat posed by South Asian terror groups including Pakistan based Lashkar-e-Taiba and D company, India and the US decided to step up their counter-terrorism efforts, they reached five other key agreements. An India-US Joint Declaration on Combating Terrorism issued at the end of the first India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue on September 22 renewed a call to Pakistan

to bring perpetrators of 2008 Mumbai terror attacks to justice. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and US Secretary of State John Kerry, who led the dialogue, “reiterated the threat posed by entities such as Al-

Qaeda and its affiliates, Lashkar-eTaiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, D Company, and the Haqqani Network, and other regional groups that seek to undermine stability in South Asia.” The dialogue set the stage for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third summit with President Barack Obama at the United Nations next week. Other key outcomes included setting up a new mechanism of dialogue between India’s Foreign Secretary and US Deputy Secretary of State on regional and global issues.

F

ollowing a public outcry, the government made a U-turn on September 22, exempting social media sites and apps users, as also net banking and password-based e-commerce, from saving data for a minimum of 90 days from the date of transaction as under the draft encryption policy before withdrawing the draft.. Opposition parties like Congress and Aam Admi Party slammed the BJP-led government for the draft encryption policy even after it was withdrawn. “There was concern about the draft in certain sections. When I went through the draft policy, I found that there were two-three words which were giving rise to unnecessary misgivings,” said Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. “Hence I have directed the department to withdraw the draft

CCS okays Apache choppers deal

NEW DELHI: The union cabinet on September 22 cleared a mega deal for purchasing Apache and Chinook helicopters from American aviation giant Boeing, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to US. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met here on September 22

after a meeting of the cabinet, and cleared the proposal worth $2.5 billion, defense ministry sources said. India would be buying 22 Apache attack helicopters and 15 Chinook heavy-lift choppers, a deal that has been pending since 2013 when Boeing won the tender in a global competition. In August this year, Boeing gave 13th price extension to India, giving a deadline of September. The deal was cleared by the CCS after a green signal from finance ministry earlier this week. The Apache helicopters are meant to replace the Indian Air Force’s aging fleet of Soviet-era Mi-35 attack choppers.

Bhagwat’s quota remark sparks row NEW DELHI: The remarks by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on quota triggered strong reactions from the RJD and the Congress on September 21, with the RSS issuing a clarification and the BJP seeking to end the controversy by saying it was not in favor of reconsideration of reservation. Seizing on the remarks by Bhagwat made in the run-up the crucial Bihar assembly polls, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad dared him and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to end education and job quotas. “I challenge the RSS and the BJP to end reservations,” the former Bihar chief minister posted on Twitter. Lalu Prasad said 80 percent of the country’s population was made up of Dalits and backwards who would oppose any attempt to do away with

tion. It concerns those who encrypt their messages,” he added. Earlier in the day, in a clarification to what it called as Draft National Encryption Policy, the department of electronics and Information

Technology said certain categories of encryption products were being exempted from its purview. Earlier, the draft policy had required every message that is sent through e-mail, WhatsApp or SMS to be stored in plain text format for 90 days from the date of transaction and made available to the law enforcement agencies on demand. The draft proposed to introduce a New Encryption Policy under Section 84A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and called for public comments by October 16. Reacting to the draft policy, the Congress accused the government of trying to encroach upon the right to privacy of communication of the common people. “Subjugation of individual freedom, surveillance of citizen and suppression of the dissent have emerged as the DNA of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.

Grand alliance names candidates PATNA: The grand alliance of Janata Dal-United, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress on September 23 released the much-awaited first list of 242 candidates for the Bihar assembly elections, keeping in mind the caste equations in view of their social support base. According to a press release issued by the grand alliance, 55 percent of the 242 candidates belong to Other Backward Classes and Economically Backward Classes, 16 percent belong to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes, 14 percent are Muslim, and 16 percent from general or upper castes. About 10 percent candidates are women. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar along with RJD state president Ram Chandra Purve and state Congress president Ashok Choudhary announced the list at a joint press conference here. Nitish Kumar said the name of remaining one candidate would be announced soon. “We have tried to ensure representation to all sections of society. Jaitley confident of GST rollout by 2016 IANS, HONG KONG

F

inance Minister Arun Jaitley has expressed his confidence that the new goods and services tax (GST) regime will roll out from next fiscal despite the pending issues regarding direct tax. “The Congress is trying to delay the new tax regime. But one must remember, it is a transactional tax and not an income tax,” he said here at a press meet. Jaitley has gone to Singapore and Hong Kong on a four-day official tour. He expressed his confidence that the GST will be passed in the Rajya Sabha in the next session. Jaitley, however, added it was not necessary to implement the new regime from April 1, 2016, itself and since it is a transactional tax it can come into effect from the first date of any other month.

“It (GST) can come up on the first of any month. Delay from April 1 does not mean that it will go to April 1 of the next year. That only happens in income tax,” he added. Talking about the retrospective tax and minimum alternate tax (MAT) issues in India, Jaitley said:

“For the future, retrospective tax and MAT are over. Transfer pricing has been resolved. It is not that we have been only talking about these things, we have been acting on it as well.” He also said that Chinese investments in India are very much welcome.

The RSS is seen as the ideological fountainhead of the BJP.

reedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was “alive” and “somewhere in Manchuria, China” in 1948, one of his trusted aides, Deb Nath Das, had claimed then, according to the declassified files by the West Bengal government. Among the released dossier, file No. 22 sheds light on intelligence gathered by the Bengal government on INA leaders, including Das.

An extract dated August 9, 1948, says: “Deb Nath Das, an ex-INA leader who is actively engaged in anti-Congress propaganda, is preaching in political and party cir-

cles that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is alive and is somewhere in Manchuria, China at present.” “To rouse the curiosity and even belief of the people, he (Das) says that Netaji told him before the plane-crash that the possibility of a third world war would emerge in the wake of the second world war.” On August 22, 1945, Tokyo Radio announced the “death” of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in an air crash in Formosa (now Taiwan) on August 18, 1945.

BJP’s divisive impulses test of India’s plurality

Although the party appears to be well-entrenched, there is at least a section of its non-traditional supporters who may have become uneasy about some aspects of the government’s policies AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he 12 percent increase in the BJP’s vote share at the national level between 2009, when it secured 18.8 percent, and 2014, when this rose to 31, showed that a fairly large section of those who did not constitute the party’s traditional support base had voted for it.

After Yellen, it’s Rajan turn to act NEW DELHI: Acknowledging the recent volatile developments in the global markets, most notably China, and low inflation, US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen has decided to keep interest rates near the zero-bound. This outcome was widely expected by the financial markets, as federal fund futures were only anticipating a 30 percent probability of a September liftoff. But US monetary normalization is inevitable and most likely we will see a rate hike this year. A majority in the Federal Open Market Committee sees a rate hike sometime in 2015 and Yellen also said a rate-hike policy decision will be followed by a press conference. This implies that an October liftoff is out of the picture and a December move is very much on the cards, provided global volatile conditions in the financial markets abate, particularly in China and emerging markets. Yellen reaffirmed that the US

labour market remains ‘solid’ and that the committee is confident of meeting its long-term inflation target of 2 percent, even though falling energy prices have subdued their outlook for inflation in the short term. The market reaction was mixed but the message is quite clear: US economic recovery remains robust. Expect a rate hike in 2015, but don’t focus too much on the timing of this hike. Rather, look at the path of monetary tightening, which will remain highly “accommodative” according to Yellen. With the Fed meeting out of the way, and the September 20 Greek election likely to be a non-event for global markets, the domestic focus will turn to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) meet on September 29. The ball is now in Rajan’s court. He must stop obsessing with the timing of the US Fed hike. India’s macros — inflation, current

raised their heads. It is yet to be seen whether these diktats are floaters intended to test the public mood.

account deficit and foreign exchange reserves — are in a much stronger position than they were during the USA’s “taper tantrum” in 2013. Of course, there will be an outflow of capital when the US Fed hikes rates, whether in December or early 2016. It’s inevitable and it makes no sense in trying to time India’s own monetary policy stance ith the Fed liftoff as short-term consequences cannot be wished away. Accordingly, the Reserve Bank of India must drop its ultra-hawkish stance urgently. RBI Deputy Governor Urjit Patel recently reiterated that India needs sustained low inflation to achieve a lower cost of capital for industry. A sharp drop in real rates and the cost of capital is a necessary condition for the investment cycle to pick up. But how soft must the inflation data get in order for the Indian central bank to turn aggressively accommodative? It is highly likely that the 6 percent inflation target of the RBI for January 2016 based on retail prices will undershoot by a huge margin, which can even be north of 100 basis points. The retail inflation has fallen from 5.4 percent in June to 3.7 percent in August.

panish national Jesus Aparicio woke up from coma after a gap of 11 years and was stunned to hear that his idol, tennis maestro Roger Federer is still playing and has won 17 grand slams. Aparicio was involved in a car accident on December 12, 2004, when Federer had pocketed just four Grand Slams and was only 23-year-old. Aparicio got up from coma on August 27 this year. Curious, he asked his mother about Spain, current affairs and his favorite tennis star, Federer. “It came like a flash to my mind and I asked about Roger. I thought he had retired. Sridevi pampered by ‘Puli’ team

Tamannaah bags a song in ‘Bruce Lee’

Shooting in some old studios that she ‘hadn’t visited in so many years brought back wonderful memories’ of her initial years in Tamil industry HARICHARAN PUDIPEDDI, CHENNAI

S

ridevi, who plays the queen of an ancient kingdom in her comeback Tamil film Puli, says she was treated like a queen off the sets too and considered this gesture of the team “sweet”. “To be treated like a queen even off the sets was the best part of this role. It felt special, respected and very sweet,” Sridevi, who is returning to Tamil cinema after two decades, told IANS. Sridevi’s last Tamil outing was 1986 film Naan Adimai Illai with superstar Rajinikanth. When she went back to the sets after so many

years, she admits it was nostalgic. “Shooting in some old studios that I hadn’t visited in so many years brought back wonderful memories of my initial years in Tamil industry. It was like reliving a dream,” she said. About her role, she says: “This is the kind of the role you get once in a lifetime. It excited me so much that I jumped at the opportunity without much contemplation. Contrary to everything I’ve done in my career, what I’ve done in this film will always remain special”. Going by the film’s promos, one would’ve expected her to be playing the antagonist. But she doesn’t concur with that observation. “It’s a character with layers of

shades. I’m not playing a typical queen we read in fairy tales. I’m really not at the liberty to divulge much information,” she said. Her look and costumes from the film have already created quite a buzz. She gives all the credit to fashion designer Manish Malhotra. “Right from my gown to ornaments and the crown; Mansih was responsible for everything,” said Sridevi, who had to have people help her carry the costume as it was so heavy.

ctress Pia Bajpai, who sported a bikini for an advertisement, believes one need not necessarily have a great body to wear a bikini. “No matter how you look, if you’re comfortable with your own body, anybody can sport a bikini. When you’re confident about how you look, trust me it isn’t difficult to slip into a bikini,” Pia told IANS. In an advertisement of music app Gaana, Pia wore a bikini for a beach sequence. “Although I never got to wear a bikini in my films so far, I agreed to do this ad because the concept was beautiful. The ad

was shot in Spain on a beach, and it made sense to appear in a bikini. I wasn’t forced to do it,” she said. Pia admits she was quite comfortable in the bikini, but she did

experience cold feet initially. “In the trials, I did get a little apprehensive, but when I saw women walking naked on the beach, I really didn’t mind wearing a bikini. Currently shooting for her Bollywood debut film Yeh Laal Rang, she’s willing to sport a bikini in films too, but not before she knows how she’ll be portrayed. “I have no qualms in wearing a bikini, as long as I’m not portrayed cheaply. My decision to wear or not to wear a bikini will depend on the director and cinematographer of the film because they will be responsible for how I look on screen,” she said.

CHENNAI: Southern actress Tamannaah Bhatia has reportedly bagged an opportunity to groove to a special song in actor Ram Charan’s upcoming Telugu actioner Bruce Lee, which also features Chiranjeevi in a cameo. “Tamannaah has been offered the song that was originally planned with Ileana (D’Cruz). While Tamannaah is yet to sign the dotted line, it is learnt that she has given her nod,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. Reportedly, Chiranjeevi will also shake a leg in this song along with his son. The makers plan to shoot the song in Hyderabad.

FILM REVIEW | TAMIL

‘Trisha Illana Nayanthara’ - A fun sex comedy that isn’t bold enough

D

ebutant Adhik Ravichandran’s Trisha Illana Nayanthara, an A-certified adult comedy, was promoted as the boldest Tamil film of this generation, and as strictly intended for adults. It’s bold to an extent, but not quite enough and that’s disappointing, considering it was Tamil cinema’s first attempt at the genre. With an A certificate the makers were so proud about, why not give us an unadulterated sex comedy; why dilute it with family sentiment? G.V. Prakash plays Jeeva, a jilted lover stuck between Ramya (Anandi) and Aditi (Manisha Yadav).

Film: Trisha Illana Nayanthara; Language: Tamil; Director: Adhik Ravichandran; Cast: G.V Prakash Kumar, Anandi, Manisha Yadav, VTV Ganesh, Simran and Arya; Rating: *** Their mothers give birth to them around the same time in the hospital. When they’re put in the cradles, Jeeva mysteriously ends up in the middle with Ramya and Aditi on either side. Jeeva’s uncle jokes about it and from an early age, they like

each other. The childhood sequences are fun to watch, especially the scene where the trio uses a cussword substitute to get back at a

bully. Adhik shows a lot of promise as a filmmaker with good understanding of what young audiences want. In a lovely scene, when

Ramya offers her cheek for Jeeva to kiss, and when he does, water gushes upward from a nearby pipe. The film respects and disrespects women at the same time. There’s so much hatred against women, but Aditi’s character stands testimonial to the equal freedom they deserve. G.V. Prakash may not be a great actor, but he sure does know how to play to the gallery, even when the joke is on his character most of the times. He’s definitely improved as an actor from his last film Darling. He now delivers one-liners with ease and aces the dance moves. Anandi is decent. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

Love to be ahead of time: Meghna

Filmmaker Meghna Gulzar, whose movie Talvar is going to be released next month – based on Arushi Talwar murder case – feels making films on real events is not ‘scandalous’ RADHIKA BHIRANI, NEW DELHI

I

n 2002, when experimental cinema was not as welcome as it is today, Meghna Gulzar dared to be different with Filhaal..., a film on surrogacy. The filmmaker is only glad she is “ahead of time” with her creativity. “Filhaal, even though it was appreciated, didn’t do very well commercially. Back then, people had said, and even continue to say, that had it been released now, it would have made more sense. “Yes, it was ahead of its time. But I am fine with that. I would rather be that than be outdated,” Meghna, the daughter of celebrated writer Gulzar and veteran actress Rakhee, told IANS in an interview. It is streaks of her father’s filmography as a director — works like Koshish, which was on a deaf-andmute couple; Achanak inspired by the crime of passion that was the K.M. Nanavati case; and Libaas, a film on extra-marital affairs which remains unreleased in India till date — that find reflection in the works of Meghna. Meghna’s forthcoming film Talvar — a retelling of three investigation theories behind the Aarushi TalwarHemraj murder case — comes at an apt time when the Sheena Bora murder case has been keeping people at the edge of their seats. She couldn’t agree more, and

averred that “cinema has been reflecting society since before”, and it continues to be so. Citing relevant examples to back her point, Meghna said: “When Bandit Queen was made, it was not because of the scandal, it was because the maker felt the story

needed to be told. When Maachis and Border were made, these were stories that needed to be told. “It’s not the intent of making films on real events which is scandalous, it is when the incident itself is scandalous that the film becomes scandalous,” the 41-year-old said.

V

ishal Bhardwaj’s directorial Haider released on October 2 last year, and this year, Talvar, which he has written and co-produced, will hit the screens on this date. The filmmaker is said to have planned to make it an annual ritual. “Vishal sir has been very excited about the release date. Last year,

Haider came as a pleasant surprise... This year, Talvar has already garnered a huge response at Toronto International Film Festival. Now he is keen to bring a film every October 2,” said a spokesperson. Talvar, directed by Meghna Gulzar, also has Tabu, apart from, Irrfan Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi. ‘Katti Batti’ - Convoluted, cliched and confusing Film: Katti Batti; Cast: Imran Khan, Kangana Ranaut, Vivan Bhatena, Manasvi Mamgai, Director: Nikhil Advani; Rating: *1/2

O

n the face of it, Katti Batti is supposed to be a rom-com between a die-hard romantic and a commitment-phobic girl, at least that’s what the trailers promised. But what you get is a potpourri of emotional trajectories offered in a non-linear, confusing and obscure manner. Narrated from Madhav Kabra (Imran Khan) aka Maddy’s point of view, the narration begins with an inexplicable, found footage technique revealing his live-in relationship with Payal Malhotra (Kangana Ranaut). And then we are suddenly

thrown into the emergency ward of a hospital where the doctors and Maddy’s friends are trying to revive him after his alleged suicide attempt. After Maddy is successfully revived, we learn that his drinking Phenyl was an accident. And what

follows is Maddy’s pursuit to convince his ladylove to be friends with him once again. Their on-and-off relationship has now hit rock bottom after 5 years of living together. Kangana and Imran make a lovely, volatile pair. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable.

On the performance front, the film is Imran Khan’s canvas. His is the only character that is well etched. With his look recollecting the charm of Dilton from Archie’s comics, Imran is honest, charming and expressively convincing. On the other hand, Kangana Ranaut as Payal Malhotra who comes from a broken family, is an extension of the various roles you have seen Kangana perform in her earlier films. The script written by director Nikhil Advani and Anshul Singhal has a convoluted screenplay riddled with forced humor and glaring plot holes which include underdeveloped characterizations. Also the script is punctuated with songs that do not elevate the viewing experience. The numbers except for the last one are laborious and ear-sores. — Troy Ribeiro

Ricky Fowler’s day in BMW Championship

BY DR. NILESH MEHTA AKE FOREST, IL -- Jason Day of Queensland may head the list of 70 elite players in the FedEx Cup rankings with 4680 points but it was the flamboyant Californian Ricky Fowler who captured the hearts of the Labor Day crowd in Norton, Massachusetts during the Deutsche Bank Championship, to climb the ladder at Number 3. The top 70 in the FedEx Cup now advance to the third playoff event in Lake Forest, Illinois. This event is conducted by the Western Golf Association to benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation. BMW Championship is the penultimate event in the PGA Tour playoffs for the FedEx Cup. The golfers accumulate FedExCup points over 43 weeks of intense competition. Hence, consistent performances and point accumulation throughout the year is the key to reach the summit. At the end of the BMW Championship at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, Illinois, the best 30 players who are eligible to move on to the Tour Championship will have their scores re-set. Essentially, this ensures that all 30 players in the field will have a mathematical chance of winning the FedEx Cup. Tiger Woods won the inaugural FedEx Cup in 2007 and 2009 coupled with the

While he is not quite part of the “Big Three” of Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, he most certainly is inching upwards. “They’ve clearly played the best out of anyone over the past few months to couple of years,” Fowler said. “So I’m trying to be a small fourth thrown in there. But there are a lot of other really good young players playing well right now, as well.” As far as Jordan Spieth is concerned, there were troubles for him in the last two tournaments. Clearly, a bizarre fortnight as he ended up missing his second successive cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship in the second round of FedEx Cup playoffs. Despite that, Spieth returned to No 1 in the world rankings, thanks to the intricacies of the points scoring. Lake Forest, Illinois will see the likes of Day, Spieth, McIlroy, Fowler, Stenson among seventy other golfers. At the completion of the BMW Championship, top 30 golfers take their arduous journey to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta during September 24-27.

Library apologizes to breast-feeding mom

Sherry Singh with her toddler

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK -- A library in New York has apologized to a New York woman after an employee of the public library asked her to stop breastfeeding her daughter in public. “We will be giving our staff additional coaching to remind them about the proper practice for maintaining a welcoming environment,” Sherry Singh, a regular visitor at the Forest Hills library, was last weekend told to stop feeding her child in the library and breast-feed her four-monthold daughter in the restroom. “Me and my other daughter were playing with puppets, when this little one started crying. I started nursing her,” Singh was quoted as saying. “An employee came over and told me not to breast-feed my daughter there,” Singh said. Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said the law allowed breastfeeding in public. “It has been the law for quite a while. It is every woman’s right to breast-feed in public,” Lieberman said. Singh has accepted the library’s apology and is not taking any legal action, but she wants the story to go out to educate others.

genuine. When he was on the stage, he commanded the attention of the audience and got them hooked on to each and every scene. His witty, humorous, and hard-hitting dialogues were the highlight of the show. The cast also included Dharmendra Gohil, Chirag Vora, Jimit Trivedi, Puja Gupta, Ankit

Trivedi and others. They ably supported Paresh Rawal by putting up extraordinary performances and made the play a once-in-alifetime experience to cherish. “I love to perform in the US and now I have the chance to make you laugh non-stop. But remember, it’s not mindless comedy,” said Paresh. At the end of the show, he introduced

his team and thanked the nNational promoters JMD Creations and lLocal promoter Karl Karla. Karl Karla, CEO of Live2u Entertainment, thanked the audience and his team including his wife Sonia Karla, Payal Shah, Ketan Soni and B & G Tires. According to the producers, approximately 114 shows are slated to be staged all over the US this year. Live2u is an entertainment power house specializing and conceptualizing live shows, concerts and plays in the US and Canada featuring the most sought-after celebrities from the Indian and Pakistani entertainment circuit. Chicago Focuses on Youth Engagement BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, Chicago Election Board officials announced initiatives that are aimed at engaging more young voters during the 2016 elections. “With the Presidential Election Cycle only months away, we are targeting our younger citizens,” said Marisel A. Hernandez, SecretaryCommissioner of the Chicago Election Board. “We plan to give new meaning to ‘early and often.’ We know that if we get our citizens involved in elections early in their lives, they will return often to participate throughout their lives.” Hernandez and Election Board Chairman Langdon D. Neal pointed to the following: • On-line voter registration: The Election Board and other Chicago civic groups lobbied for this new system. In its first year, Chicago voters have accounted for nearly 31,000 or 45% of the 68,000 people who have used the system. • Election Day registration: The Election Board and other Chicago civic groups lobbied

C

for this change in the law. The Election Board will provide this service in each of the city’s 2,069 precinct polling places starting with the Primary Elections in March 2016. • m.chicagoelections.com: This new mobile version of the Chicago Election Board web site focuses on the most critical services to help citizens use smart phones to access the on-line registration system and find their polling place if they need to use Election Day registration. The site also will let users apply online to Vote By Mail – the option formerly known as Absentee Voting. • Young Poll Workers: For eight years, the Chicago Election Board has led the nation in assigning high-school students to serve as

Election Judges. Through a partnership with Mikva Challenge, more than 1,700 students have worked in each citywide election. Last fall, the Board partnered with the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (CLCRUL) to recruit college and university students to serve. A new CLCRUL study found that the Chicago Election Board now also leads the way in the use of college poll workers. • Civics Education: For many years, the Chicago Election Board and other civic groups advocated that one semester of civics instruction be a requirement to graduate from high school. Recently, Gov. Rauner signed new legislation to that effect. “Historically, registration and turnout rates have been lowest among our youngest voters,” Neal said. “Part of that owes to how young people are more likely to move between elections. Part of that is a feeling that voting doesn’t matter. Our hope is that civics classes and making registration and voting so easy and accessible will help us turn the corner, making more young voters upstanders instead of bystanders.”

MASCONN celebrates Onam fete in Trumbull

BY A STAFF WRITER RUMBULL, CT – About 300 people from across the southern state of Connecticut came together to participate in and cherish their rich cultural heritage and be part of the annual Onam celebrations organized by the Malayalee Association of Southern Connecticut (MASCONN) on September 12 at Madison Middle School, Trumbull, CT. The more than four-hours long cultural extravaganza was in many ways “reliving the culture and traditions” and a “cherishing the past with a view to pass it on to the future generation.” Legendary King Mahabali was welcomed to the stage with pancha vadyam and a warm traditional welcome by women, who later on performed Thiruvathirakkali, a folk dance, typically a Keralite dance, well known for its essence, grandeur and simplicity. The cultural event consisted of several songs, mostly in Malayalam. Children “from the ages of five delighted the audience with their melodious voices, and several dances both cinematic and traditional, showcasing the rich variety of dance forms prevalent in India. Said Sujanan Puthenpuraiyil, vice president of MASSCON: “In a very short period, we have grown by leaps and bounds and we strive to meet the growing needs of our community.”

Fatal fall in hall: family demands $2.5 million

Rajan Verma

BY A STAFF WRITER UFFALO, NY - The family of a first-year Indian American medical resident who died in a fall last year at the Tralf Music Hall in Buffalo, N.Y., has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the company. After attending a concert at the hall, Rajan Verma, 28, decided to climb the second-floor bannister and slide down on June 2, 2014. He completed the first leg of the bannister with another concertgoer but lost his balance on the second leg and fell to the ground. Verma succumbed to his injuries the next day. The family of the deceased Verma subsequently has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the music hall, looking for at least $2.5 million. In the filing, the family alleges the club attached a sticky substance to the bannister to deter visitors from sliding down it. That sticky substance caused Verma to lose his balance, according to the family. The lawsuit added that the music hall should anticipate concertgoers attempting to ride the bannister and should have safeguarded the staircase. A native of New Jersey, Verma was a graduate of St. John’s University, where he received a degree in biology, and later the American University of Antigua Medical School. He was in his first year of the University at Buffalo.

Indian student takes up cudgels for mentally ill BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, D.C. -- An Indian American student at North Carolina State University has been raising awareness among students, faculty and administrators about mental health issues. “One of our main goals is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and suicide, because no one talks about it,” said Avi Aggarwal, president of N.C. State University’s student organization National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), on World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10. The organization is also promoting existing mental health services on campus and assisting students in receiving care from such services, N.C. State University’s student newspaper, the Technician,

W

Avi Aggarwal reported. “Over 90 per cent of people who commit suicide are diagnosed with a mental illness,” Aggarwal was quoted as saying. NAMI, in coordination with N.C. State University’s Student Health Center, also held a candlelight vigil on

September 10. The international theme of this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day is “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives.” Organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in collaboration with the World Health Organization since 2003, the initiative seeks support from governments, non-governmental organizations, and international and national associations to raise public awareness about one of the world’s largest causes of premature and unnecessary death — suicide. According to the latest suicide figures provided by non-profit organization Suicide.org, over one million people die from committing suicide worldwide each year, and the global suicide rate has increased 60 per cent in the past 45 years.

Indian scientists decode Tulsi genome

Diet drinks won’t make you slimmer Switching to sugar-free drinks may not help control your weight if you do not pay attention to what you eat IANS, NEW YORK

I

f you are trying to shed some extra kilos, switching to sugarfree drinks may not really help, said a study. Diet-beverage consumers tend to compensate for the absence of calories in their drinks by noshing on extra food that is loaded with sugar, sodium, fat and cholesterol, the study said. “If people simply substitute diet beverages for sugar-sweetened beverages, it may not have the intended effect because they may just eat those calories rather than drink

them,” said researcher Ruopeng An, professor at University of Illinois in the US. Switching to diet or sugar-free drinks may not help people control their weight if they do not pay attention to the quantity and quality of the foods they consume, An said. The study examined the dietary habits of more than 22,000 US adults. An compared participants’ daily calorie intakes, including their consumption of energy-dense but nutrient-poor discretionary foods that include products such as cookies, ice cream, chocolate, fries and pastries, and five types of beverages

— diet drinks, sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas and fruit drinks, coffee, tea and alcohol. While coffee and diet-beverage drinkers consumed fewer total calories each day than people who preferred alcohol or sugary drinks, they obtained a greater percentage of their daily calorie intake from discretionary foods, An said. “It may be that people who consume diet beverages feel justified in eating more, so they reach for a muffin or a bag of chips,” An said. “Or perhaps, in order to feel satisfied, they feel compelled to eat more of these high-calorie foods,” he said.

EATING FISH DAILY CAN Sedentary lifestyle bad for kids CURB DEPRESSION TOO LONDON: Eating a lot of fish may help curb the risk of depression in both men and women, reveals a pooled analysis of the available evidence. After pooling all the European data together, a significant association emerged between those eating the most fish and a 17 percent reduction in depression risk compared with those eating the least. When the researchers looked specifically at gender, they found a slightly stronger association between high fish consumption and lowered depression risk in men. Among women, the associated reduction in depression risk was 16

percent. “Higher fish consumption may be beneficial in the primary prevention of depression,” the authors noted. Several previous studies have looked at the possible role of dietary factors in modifying depression risk, but the findings have been inconsistent and inconclusive. “The high-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals found in fish may help stave off depression while eating a lot of fish may be an indicator of a healthy and more nutritious diet,” the researchers suggested. Depression affects an estimated 350 million people worldwide.

L

ow levels of physical activity, weaker physical fitness and obesity may lead to arterial stiffness, a sign of cardiovascular diseases, even in primary school children, says a study. The findings suggest that a

lifestyle intervention in childhood can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases later in life. The “Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children” study (PANIC) carried out at University of Eastern Finland included 512 children aged six to eight years. The researchers found that chil-

dren whose physical fitness was better than that of their peers had a better arterial dilation capacity during physical exercise. Furthermore, the study showed that children with weak physical fitness combined with a high body fat percentage or low levels of physical activity also had the stiffest arteries. Moreover, higher arterial stiffness was also found in children with low levels of physical activity combined with a high body fat percentage. Children with the most physical activity or with the best physical fitness had the most flexible arteries and the best arterial dilation capacity. Another finding of the study is the association of better physical fitness with better arterial health, suggesting that especially regular, highintensity physical exercise can be beneficial for arterial health.
