Vishal Patel

BY A STAFF WRITER EWSPORT, VA -- The US Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia on December 20 announced that an Indian American resident of Glen Allen, Va., Vishal Patel, has been arrested in Kansas on charges of fraud, false statements and identity theft. According to allegations by the US Attorney’s Office in Virginia, Vishal Patel used the personal identifying information of licensed physicians to pose as a doctor in online employment applications to medical staffing companies. India’s assessed share of the regular UN budget in 2017 was $20.46 million and a five per cent cut would amount to $1.023 million. The UN General Assembly approved a two-year regular budget of $5.397 billion for 2018 and 2019 on Christmas Eve during an unusual sitting. Secretary General Antonio Guterres’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said it was five per cent or $286 million below the budget for the years 2016 and 2017.

Trump lawyers looking to end Russia probe IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s legal team is standing by its prediction that a central part of the probe into Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election will conclude quickly, the media reported. Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow reasserted in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the parts of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe involving Trump would end

soon, though he did not mention specific dates, reports The Hill magazine. “I know we, collectively, the lawyers, are looking forward to an expeditious wrapping up of this matter,” Sekulow said. A spokesman for Mueller’s team declined to comment on the report. Experts have said it was unlikely that the special counsel’s probe will wrap up anytime soon, given the scope of the investigation that has reached into the upper echelons of the White House.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller

Mueller’s team has brought charges against four individuals in the Russia probe, most recently Trump’s former national security

budget cuts calling it one of the successes for Washington. “We reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key US priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system,” she asserted in a statement. “The inefficiency and overspending of the UN are well known,” she said. The US share of the budget set at 22 per cent is the highest and it contributed $611 million in 2017. While Haley, using her budget expertise as a former state governor, bargained hard during the negotiations, many other countries and Guterres have also called for reducing the budget. adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty on December 1 to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Trump’s lawyer weighed in on the probe on Monday as the president celebrated Christmas at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida. Over the weekend, Trump ratcheted up his feud with FBI leadership, swiping at Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and former FBI Director James Comey. In one tweet, Trump appeared to weigh in on a Washington Post report that said McCabe planned to retire in the coming months after receiving his full pension benefits. “FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits. 90 days to go?!!!” Trump tweeted.

Obama warns against divisive use of social media IANS, WASHINGTON

F

ormer US President Barack Obama has warned against the irresponsible use of social media that fosters division and leads to the “Balkanisation of society”, in what was seen as a dig at his successor and prolific tweeter Donald Trump. Obama was speaking to Britain’s Prince Harry in an interview for the BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme. Obama warned that the Internet risked reinforcing people’s prejudices and leading to a fractured society. “All of us in leadership have to find ways in which we can recreate a common space on the Internet.” He expressed concern about a future where facts are discarded and

people only read and listen to things that reinforce their own views. “One of the dangers of the Internet is that people can have entirely different realities. They can be

cocooned in information that reinforces their current biases,” he said. Obama did not mention Trump by name during the interview, which he said was his first since

leaving office. However, Trump’s campaign and presidency have been characterized by his outspoken use of Twitter. “The question has to do with how do we harness this technology in a way that allows a multiplicity of voices, allows a diversity of views, but doesn’t lead to a Balkanisation of society and allows ways of finding common ground,” Obama said in the interview, which was taped in September. Asked how he felt on the day he left office in January, Obama described mixed feelings. “The sense that there was a completion, and that we had done the work in a way that preserved our integrity and that we hadn’t fundamentally changed, I think was a satisfying feeling,” he said.

The year when beauty pageants found a purpose

2017 became the year when India got its first transgender beauty queen and Miss Peru pageant contestants broke stereotypes by sharing statistics on gender-based violence NATALIA NINGTHOUJAM, NEW DELHI

eauty pageants are often slammed for being “shallow” and focusing just on the outer looks of a woman. Then there was the Miss & Mrs Curvy Queen 2017 that celebrated curves and provided all the “plussize” beauties a platform. It wasn’t just this beauty pageant that didn’t emphasize on the traditional body measurements. Miss Peru pageant contestants, who represented different parts of the South American country, skipped sharing their body measurements (bust/waist/hips). Instead, they announced statistics on violence against women in Peru. Mrs India Universe 2017-World Shreya Krishnan saw it as a good move. “Vital statistics are probably a wrong way to measure fitness. If you want to be healthy, fit and happy, you don’t have to be essentially of a specific size. There is some perception change that needs to be brought in... which some pageants are trying to do,” she said. Further breaking the stereotype, Kavita Malhotra, founder of Crowning Glory, came up with Motherhood — Jewel in My Crown, a beauty pageant involving mothers and their children. “We gave a platform to mothers and their children so that they could express their feelings for one another. We often take for granted that all mothers love their children and viceversa. They don’t say it verbally. There was no age bar. Boys also participated,” she said.

Chinese smartphone players dominated Indian market NEW DELHI: There are nearly 650 million mobile phone users in India — and over 300 million of them have a smartphone. For these users, Chinese players became the first choice this year as they launched devices with compelling features, thus dominating the budget and mid-range price segment in the country. Chinese vendors captured 49 percent of the Indian mobile phone handset market in the first quarter of 2017 — with a 180 percent (year-on-year) revenue growth — threatening to wipe out domestic players from the overall handset segment. Among the top Chinese brands, Xiaomi witnessed the biggest growth this year. With a market share of 23.5 percent and having shipped 9.2 million smartphones in the third quarter this year, Xiaomi became the fastest-growing smartphone brand with a growth

rate of nearly 300 percent (year-onyear) in the third quarter this year. According to IDC, Samsung had 23.5 percent market share in India, similar to Xiaomi, the Lenovo-Motorola combine was at 9 per cent, Vivo at 8.5

per cent and OPPO at 7.9 percent. For Xiaomi, its Redmi Note 4 device that was launched in January at Rs 9,999 for the base model (2GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage) proved to be a game-changer and its best-selling

smartphone too. The company shipped approximately four million units of the device in this quarter, said IDC. Chinese brands like Huawei (which sells its youth-centric sub-brand Honor in India), Vivo, Motorola (a Lenovo brand) and OPPO’s performance remained strong and contributed to more than half of the total smartphone shipments in the country. Aiming to push its position up in the highly competitive Indian market, Honor launched flagship products at “unbeatable prices”, like the highly-successful Honor 8 Pro (Rs 29,999) and Honor 7X (starting at Rs 12,999). Vivo and OPPO’s aggressive marketing spends also paid them hefty dividends. With smartphone growth nearing saturation in metros, Chinese players were also busy building their base in the tier II and III cities. Xiaomi announced its third plant in

the country based out of Noida and the first facility for power banks in partnership with Hipad Technology. Spread across 230,000 square feet, the Noida unit is a dedicated facility for Xiaomi power banks where the Mi Power Bank 2i will be assembled. The company already has two smartphone manufacturing plants in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, where more than 95 percent of its smartphones sold in India are assembled locally. The Foreign Investment Promotion Board approved OPPO’s request to open single-brand retail stores in the country. With this decision, OPPO became the first smartphone firm to do so in India. Aiming to gain a further foothold in the offline smartphone market, Xiaomi opened its first “Mi Home” store in Bengaluru in May and plans to add 100 such stores in the next two years. — Krishna SinhaChaudhury

India-US ties deepen this year US President Donald Trump said that ties between the two countries have ‘never been stronger’ AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI

hough the personal chemistry between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and new US President Donald Trump was the highlight of IndiaUS ties in 2017, what came as a huge boost to bilateral relations towards the year end is the key strategic geopolitical role for India in the new US security strategy. At the same time, New Delhi made it clear that its foreign policy remains independent when it went with the rest of the world in voting in the UN General Assembly against Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Despite a change of guard in Washington, the India-US global strategic partnership remained strong as ever and a warm hug marked the first-ever meeting between Modi and Trump at the White House in June this year. While Trump said that bilateral ties have “never been stronger”, Modi said that both the countries

were “committed to such a bilateral architecture that will take our strategic partnership to new heights”. According to a joint statement, the two leaders “resolved to expand and deepen the strategic partnership between the countries and advance common objectives”. “President Trump and Prime Minister Modi expressed confi-

to intensify its counter-terrorism efforts, since no partnership can survive a country’s support for militants and terrorists who target a partner’s own service members and officials,” the NSS states. It also states that the US would encourage India to increase its economic assistance in the region. Trump continued with his praise of Modi at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Vietnam last month where

again met on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asia Summits in the Philippines, a meeting that was described as “warm and productive”. Modi-Trump bonhomie apart, high-level visits continued between the two sides throughout the year. Another highlight of the IndiaUS ties this year was President Trump’s announcement of a new US policy on South Asia that called for India playing a key role in the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

GST made 2017 most significant for economy since Independence The rigours of the new compliance procedures that the GST regime brought in initially caught traders and small businesses off-guard BISWAJIT CHOUDHURY, NEW DELHI

T

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley

he 70th year since Independence will go down in Indian history since the country switched over to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, realizing the vision of a unified market in a federal system that guided the nationalist bourgeoisie in joining Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle so as to liberate India from the British. Of course, the structural reform came accompanied with pain for trade and industry caught off-guard by the rigours of new compliance procedures. Queried by corporate leaders at industry chamber Ficci’s 90th AGM here earlier this month on how GST was impacting through lower tax collections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley put the onus on them. “It is you from industry, who have

been calling for so long to bring GST… and no sooner do these initial problems in implementing a reform of such scale appear, then you want to go back to the system we’ve had for 70 years,” he said. The earlier system was a myriad of central and state taxes where the movement of goods was slowed

The new indirect tax regime unifying the Indian market has four tax slabs of five, 12, 18 and 28 percent down by products being taxed multiple times and at different rates. State level taxes replaced by the pan-India GST include state cesses and surcharges, luxury tax, state VAT, purchase tax, central sales tax, taxes on advertisements, entertainment tax, various forms of entry tax,

and taxes on lotteries and betting. Central taxes replaced by GST are service tax, special additional customs duties, additional excise duties on goods of special importance, central excise, additional customs duties, excise on medicinal and toilet preparations, additional excise duties on textiles and textile products, and cesses and surcharges. The new indirect tax regime unifying the Indian market has four tax slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28 percent. It has a novel feature whereby goods and services providers get the benefit of input tax credit for the goods used, effectively making the real incidence of taxation lower than the headline taxation rate. “GST is a way of formalizing the economy and a very effective way of ensuring tax compliance, making it harder to earn black money,” Gita Gopinath, Professor, International Studies and Economies, Harvard University.

Afghanistan wants to join CPEC: China Beijing warned New Delhi of not ‘disturbing and influencing’ the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING

C

hina on Wednesday said Afghanistan’s willingness to join the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor should not worry India and warned it against “disturbing” the key project of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. A day after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China and Pakistan want Afghanistan to join the CPEC, the Foreign Ministry said Kabul is willing to join the multi-billion dollar corridor, which cuts through Pakistan-administered Kashmir claimed by India.

40 killed in Kabul suicide attack KABUL: At least 40 people were killed and over 30 injured on Thursday in a suicide attack inside a cultural center here, the Interior Ministry has confirmed. The explosion took place around 10.30 a.m. in the Qala-e-Nazar area, Nasrat Rahimi, the ministry spokesman told Efe news, adding that the victims included women and children. Rahimi said the building where the attack took place also houses the office of the Sada-EAfghanistan (Afghan Voice) news agency and a mosque. A ministry official told the BBC that the suicide blast was followed by two other explosions in the area.

Pakistan: More trouble for Sharif brothers ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s anti-corruption body, the National Accountability Bureau, has approved the filing of a new reference against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif over misuse of public money in a road construction project for their home in Lahore. The board okayed the corruption reference against the Sharif brothers on Wednesday for constructing a two-lane road from Raiwind to their family residence at Jati Umra, which allegedly caused a loss of over Rs 125 million to the national exchequer, the News International reported. —IANS

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying sought to allay India’s fear that the project was directed at it and, at the same time, warned New Delhi of not “disturbing and influencing it”. “They are willing to integrate into the regional connectivity process and they are willing to integrate into the CPEC,” Hua said at the daily press conference. However, there has been no public announcement by Afghanistan. Hua said in the Wednesday trilateral meet of the Foreign Ministers of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan, that the three countries agreed to promote connectivi-

ty under the Belt and Road framework. “Just as Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the joint press conference, CPEC is not directed at the third party and we hope to bring benefit to the third party and the whole region,” Hua said without naming India. “Afghanistan is the common neighbor of China and Pakistan and it has a strong desire for developing the economy and in improving people’s livelihood.” “The trilateral cooperation and dialogue is not directed at any country or any party and the dialogue and cooperation should not be influenced and disturbed,” Hua

said. The CPEC — a network of highways, railways, roads and special economic zones, which connects China’s Xinjiang with Pakistan’s Gwadar port, is opposed by India as it passes through a part of

Kashmir held by Pakistan and claimed by India. China has always sought to allay India’s apprehensions about the project, describing it purely as an economic initiative.

Putin announced his intention to seek another presidential term in 2018 on December 6 and on December 14 he said that he would run as an independent with the support of various political parties and ordinary citizens. This means that the incumbent, if accepted as a candidate, will have to collect and present to the CEC signatures of 300,000 of his supporters. This has to be done no later than 45 days before the elections set for March 18, 2018. A public opinion poll conducted in early December, shortly after Putin announced his intention to run, revealed that 67 per cent of Russians intended to vote for the incumbent.

Gune brings innovative approach for PTSD battle MAYANK CHHAYA, DESERT HOT SPRINGS (CALIFORNIA)

s America battles a variety of ailments related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Indian American counseling psychologist Ramesh Gune is emerging as a key influencer in the campaign. Gune, who holds a doctorate in counseling psychology with emphasis on mind-body medicine, is bringing to bear a fusion of treatment approaches, which his recent patients extol. PTSD has been described by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) as “a disorder that

develops in some people who have experienced a shocking, scary, or dangerous event”. America’s international engagement in various

wars combined with policing a heavily armed citizenry at home have led to a large number of veterans as well as first respondents

falling prey to PTSD. According to some statistics, eight per cent of Americans, or nearly 25 million, have some form of PTSD. What Dr. Gune and his wife Dr. Sandra Gune, a holistic chiropractor, offer is a five-day treatment drawing on a combined mind-body approach that looks at PTSD related ailments as both external and internal. “In the West, mind and body were always separate. External cure became crucial. There had been no integrated approach to health in the 20th century. We bring a holistic treatment which recognizes that health is as much about body as it is about mind,” Dr. Gune told IANS in an interview.

day after suffering a massive defeat in Radhakrishnan Nagar (R.K.Nagar) bypoll, Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK this week removed six party officials and supporters of sidelined leader T.T.V.Dinakaran, who had contested and won the seat as an Independent. The decision was taken at a high level meeting held at the party headquarters which was attended by party Coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator Chief Minister K. Palaniswami. The six AIADMK District Secretaries who where removed from the party were: P.Vetrivel, V.P.Kalairajan, Parthiban, Muthiah, Thangatamizhselvan and Rengasamy. The party also dismissed actor C.R.Saraswathi, Pugazhendi (Karnataka unit) and Nanjil Sampath. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Palaniswami said action against party traitors will be taken.

IAS exonerated of graft charges MUMBAI: After being sent on compulsory leave for 145 days, senior Maharashtra IAS officer Radheshyam L. Mopalwar was this week reinstated as the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Ltd (MSRDC) chief. An official order said his 145-daylong leave from August 3 had been approved, and it directed him to take over his posting as Vice Chairman and Managing Director of MSRDC. Mopalwar was asked to proceed on “leave” by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after a BJP legislator complained that the bureaucrat had allegedly amassed disproportionate assets worth over Rs 800 crore.

The DMKs’ N.Marudhu Ganesh came a poor third securing 24,681 votes. Supporters of Dinakaran celebrated the victory by dancing, distributing sweets and bursting crackers. From the start, Dinakaran was in the lead and the gap between him and the rivals kept on widening as the counting progressed. Earlier in the day, Dinakaran, speaking to reporters at the Madurai airport, predicted that the government headed by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami will fall in three months time. He said the people in R.K. Nagar have reflected the views of the Tamil Nadu’s populace. Embrace SA test: Shastri to team He said the players are playing together for the last few years and that will help them flourish in the series IANS, MUMBAI

I

ndia chief coach Ravi Shastri has urged the squad to embrace the challenges awaiting them in the tour to South Africa, as he insisted that they have prepared well. India will play South Africa in three Tests, six One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). The first Test begins on January 5. Test matches in South Africa have always been tough for India who have never won a Test series there. “We know how tough this tour of South Africa is. That’s the beauty about their profession — wanting challenges and embracing it and that’s what we are looking for,” Shastri said at the pre-departure media conference. “We toured Australia in 2014 and we did a pretty good job. We have done well in England. In 2015, we toured Sri Lanka and it had great tracks on which the ball swung. So preparation has been good.” Shastri said that the players are

Rohit joins Kohli, defends Mahi’s place in ODI, T20I squads NEW DELHI: India opener Rohit Sharma has joined his skipper Virat Kohli in backing former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s future in India’s limited-overs side. Having firmly backed Dhoni during his media interactions in the recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, Rohit, who led the side in the absence of Kohli, expressed his shock at constant questioning of Dhoni’s place in the limited overs side. “I am shocked that this question is being raised. If you look at the recent performances, I don’t understand why people are still taking about it. It is not about whether he

The Mumbai batsman added that those criticizing Dhoni needed to focus on the present given that there is still time for the next 50-over World Cup. “It is too far and we should focus on what is happening now. He bats at No.6 and does not get to play so many balls as some of us at the top of the order,” Rohit said. Dhoni scored a quick-fire 39 off 22 balls in the first of the threematch T20I rubber that helped India reach a challenging score of 180/3.

Many experts said that this is the toughest tour of India due to the playing conditions. To which Kohli replied: “Cricket is played with bat and ball. Conditions don’t matter. I have no doubt in the ability of the team. We are on the right track.” In South Africa, the batsmen will face extra bounce and pace from the surface. The weather conditions there are also different as

compared to the sub-continent. “You need to play cricket for a long period of time to win abroad. The hunger this time is the same. We want to do what we couldn’t the last time around,” he added. Kohli, who was away from cricket from after the third Test match against Sri Lanka in December, said it is not difficult to switch to cricket. “I was away for something which was much more important in my life but I had been training. Switching back to cricket was not difficult at all. Cricket is in my blood,” the Delhi batsman said. The 29-year-old also said that adjusting to the weather conditions in South Africa won’t be a big problem for the players.

Ashwini backs BWF’s 2018 schedule Rahul, Rohit rise in ICC T20I rankings TRIDIB BAPARNASH, NEW DELHI

I

IANS, DUBAI

I

ndian batsmen Lokesh Rahul and Rohit Sharma have made substantial gains in the Twenty20 International (T20I) rankings following India’s 3-0 series win over Sri Lanka. Rahul gained 23 slots to reach the fourth position among batsmen after scoring 154 runs, including two half-centuries, during the series, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced. Rohit climbed six rungs to reach 14th position. He scored 162 runs during the series, which included a knock of 118 in the second match in Indore. Australia opener Aaron Finch moved up a rung, displacing Virat Kohli to take the top spot. West Indies opener Evin Lewis also gained a spot to rise to second place. Kohli slipped to third position after missing the series due to personal commitments. However, Kohli, who is the top ranked batsman in One-Day

Rohit Sharma

Internationals (ODIs) and placed second in Tests, is only eight points behind Finch and four behind Lewis. Among the bowlers, Indian legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s eight wickets in the series have helped him move up 14 slots to reach 16th position while Hardik Pandya (up 40 places to joint 39th) and Kuleep Yadav (up 48 places to 64) have also moved northwards after taking six wickets each.

ndian doubles star Ashwini Ponnappa has backed the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) decision to make it mandatory for top shuttlers to play at least 12 tournaments in a revamped schedule for 2018. Ashwini’s comments came a week after many singles stars, including the likes of Saina Nehwal and Carolina Marin, slammed the world body’s decision. “It is a really packed schedule but that’s how the sport is and next year in particular is more packed because of the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games,” Ashwini told IANS. “Hence a lot of the tournaments which are held in the later part of the year have been moved to accommodate the CWG and Asian Games. “The calendar would have been widely spread out without these two major tournaments. But having said that, the top players, especially the ones who are in the top10 they do have a choice of choosing matches,” she added.

Ashwini said that the top players can still opt out of the optional tournaments depending on their work load. (Photo: IANS)

The BWF has made it compulsory for the world’s top 15 players in the singles events and top 10 pairs in the doubles disciplines to play a minimum of 12 tournaments or face a penalty. Ashwini, who was part of the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist duo with Jwala Gutta, further said that the top players can still opt out of the optional tournaments depending on their work load. “The most important tourna-

ments that they have to play would be the Premier Superseries but by and large they do have a choice of choosing matches and its also up to the players’ fitness as to how many matches they want to take on. “It’s not like they have to play all the Superseries tournaments in the year. So I think it’s fair enough that few tournaments are made compulsory and few kept optional. Players do get to pick and choose tournaments,” she said.

Nawaz honored to portray Bal Thackeray IANS, MUMBAI

awazuddin Siddiqui has released the teaser of Thackeray — an upcoming biopic on the life of Bal Thackeray. The National Award-winning actor says it is an honor for him to portray the late Shiv Sena founderpresident. The less than two-minute teaser starts with dramatically showing a small child crying in a poverty-

stricken area. Later on, a bunch of people rush past it and torch the place. Later, scenes of Thackeray conducting his meetings are shown. The video ends with the introduction of Nawazuddin taking up the stage as Bal Thackeray to address a rally. “It’s an honor and pride to portray the real king of the country on screen. Here comes the teaser of Thackeray. Hearty thanks to shri

Uddhav Thackeray, Sanjay Raut, AmitabhBachchan and Abhijit Panse,” Nawazuddin wrote alongside the teaser.

BRIEFS Jaipur historians to review ‘Padmavati’ JAIPUR: The Censor Board has sought the opinion of two veteran historians from Jaipur on film Padmavati by inviting them to view the film. These historians include Professor B.L. Gupta and Prof R.S. Khangarot. While Gupta is professor of history in Rajasthan Vishwavidhyala and has written numerous books on India during the medieval period, Khangarot is principal of Agrawal College. Speaking to the media, Khangarot said the entire tussle related to the movie is not between the Karni Sena and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, director-producer of Padmavati, but between Bhansali and history and hence “once we watch the film, it will be clear if history has been tampered with or not”. Gupta said he was all for artistic freedom but then it should not happen at the cost of history. “It should be very clear that we will share the historical facts to the best of knowledge and will not be backing any political party,” he added.

‘Tiger Zinda Hai’: Seriously frivolous, its a masala film

D

esigned purely for Salman Khan fans, Tiger Zinda Hai is elegantly and stylishly made by writer director Ali Abbas Zafar. It is nothing short of an effervescent cocktail of spy thrillers, except that the fizz is mild and evaporating. Tiger Zinda Hai is the sequel to the 2012 released, Kabir Khan directed, Ek Tha Tiger. The tale takes off eight years from where it left in the last edition, sometime in 1993 just after the Gulf War. RAW agent Tiger is now married to his Pakistani girlfriend Zoya who is an ISI agent. He has a 7 year old son, whom he fondly calls Junior. He lives a domesticated life

In faraway Ikrit a small town in Iraq close to the Turkish border, the Islamic fundamentalists have taken over the place. They behead a journalist and are holding a few Americans as hostages. Amidst this

chaos, the lives of twenty five Indian and fifteen Pakistani nurses working in a hospital there, are in peril. The Americans are ready to bombard Ikrit, but the Indian gov-

ernment intervenes in order to protect the nurses who are stranded there. The Americans grant the Indian Government seven days to evacuate the nurses and on the

eighth day they would attack the town. Under such strained conditions, Shenoy, the head of RAW, can think of only one person who could rescue the nurses. He is Tiger. Shenoy and his assistant Karan track Tiger and cajole him to serve the country with, Desh ki izzat ki baat hai, baaki, you know better. It goes without saying, Tiger puts up a team and with patriotic fervour he lands up in Ikrit where he does the needful. We understood what Salman did and why he did it, but the rescue drama definitely seems contrived, to befit his star status. Needless to say, Zoya along with her ISI team, joins him in this mission too.

Indians’ bootlegging racket unearthed BY A STAFF WRITER AMMOND, IL -- The federal government has seized $1 million from a Hammond liquor store in Northwest Indiana that allegedly sold booze to Illinois liquor stores so they could dodge the higher state alcohol taxes in the Land of Lincoln. In June, law enforcement officials seized $1 million from Columbia Liquors at 6433 Columbia Ave. in south Hammond and its bank accounts at First Merchants Bank in Munster, including more than $52,000 in cash the owners had at their home. The federal case charges that Columbia Liquor owners Shreyas Patel and Dipti Patel “devised a scheme to defraud or obtain money by false or fraudulent pretenses.” Prosecutors allege Columbia Liquors bought liquor from three Indiana distributors and in turn sold it for cash to liquor stores across the south suburbs in Illinois, where excise taxes are substantially higher. Liquor excise tax rates are significantly lower in Indiana than in Chicago: $0.115

Sen. Kamala Harris bats for DACA children

BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -As members of Congress stated on December 19 that measures to provide relief from deportation to over 800,000 undocumented youth would be delayed until next year, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-California, joined several senators to say she would not support a stopgap budget measure to keep the government going until mid-January, unless a fix for DACA was included. “This is a matter of morality. What is the right thing to do here among leaders who say they have power,” stated the Indian American senator at a rally in Washington DC on December 19. “Use your power. Keep your promises to these young people,” Harris exhorted members of Congress. “When we wish each other ‘Merry Christmas,’ these young kids won’t be having a merry Christmas. They don’t know if they will be here tomorrow, this week or next month,” stated Harris. These young people’s lives are now in limbo. Without DACA, their only options are to live here without papers and in fear of deportation, or to leave the only country they’ve ever known,” wrote Harris in an oped for Elle magazine. “They have no path to citizenship. They can’t leave the country and get in line to immigrate here. There is no line. And for this Administration, that’s the point.” After Trump rescinded the Dream Act on September 5--an Obama-era executive order providing relief from deportation and work authorization to 800,000 youth, including 7,000 young Indian Americans–13,000

NC sues pharma firm over opioid scheme

W

John Kapoor BY A STAFF WRITER ALEIGH, NC -- North Carolina state government lawyers are suing a pharmaceutical company whose former leaders already face criminal charges elsewhere related to an alleged nationwide bribery scheme involving a powerful opioid. Attorney General Josh Stein announced an unfair trade lawsuit on December 21 he filed in Wake County Superior Court against Arizona-based Insys Therapeutics for an unlawful marketing campaign he says rewarded doctors who prescribed the drug Subsys. Federal prosecutors in Massachusetts indicted the company’s Indian American founder John Kapoor in October in connection with the kickback allegations, while former executives-including one based in Charlotte--face trial next year. Kapoor’s lawyer said he’ll fight the charges. Subsys, a mouth spray, contains fentanyl and is approved only for cancer patients dealing with extreme bouts of pain. It’s 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Nearly four people a day in North Carolina die from unintentional drug overdoses, according to officials. Several former Insys employees and health care providers have pleaded guilty to felony charges around the country. New Jersey’s attorney general also filed a lawsuit in October.

R Sen. Kamala Harris Dreamers have lost their protected status, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, according to Harris. Each day, about 122 D-California, and others have stated they children lose their status, she noted, adding: will not support CR unless DACA provision “Each day matters.” measures were also in place. Trump has given Congress until “Given the lack of any realistic plan to March 5 to come up with legislation to pass the Dream Act, it’s my intention to permanently protect undocumented youth vote against the continuing resolution,” from deportation. Feinstein said in a statement. She called A House ‘continuing resolution’–CR– on the president, Senate Majority Leader would avert a government shut-down via Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, and House a short-term spending Bill which funds the Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, to “to do government until January 19. 1 held in hit-and-run death of student BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A 31year old Emergency Medical Technician in the New York Fire Department has been arrested on suspicion of causing the death of Taranjit Kaur Parmar, 18, a dental medicine student, during a fender-bender that turned deadly last month on November 9 in Levittown, N.Y. The man who allegedly snuffed out the promising Indian-American teen’s life has been identified by the police as Daniel Coppolo of Deer Park, N.Y. Coppolo is accused of second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment. He is being held on a $1-million bail. His lawyer, Lawrece Carra, told reporters he had yet to see credible evidence that it was Coppolo driving the car that killled Parmar, and would wait to see it before mounting a defense. Coppolo was in custody for an unrelated crime and when he was let out, the Nassau County police were waiting for him. Parmar had been driving home in her Jeep traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown, N.Y., late afternoon

Parmar sustained injuries to her head and chest and was taken by the Nassau County Police Ambulance to an area hospital where she was later pronounced dead by a staff physician. The young Indian-American was a dental student at Adelphi University, a private higher education institution in Garden City, Long Island, which she joined last year.

The Global Teacher Prize is a $1-million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession. The prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognized and

celebrated, according to the Varkey Foundation. It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers–not only on their students but on the communities around them. The Varkey Foundation, founded by Sunny Varkey, a non-resident Indian education entrepreneur and philanthropist based in Dubai, is a not-for-profit organization established to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children throughout the world. Its mission is that every child should have a good teacher, which it strives to accomplish by building teacher capacity, advocacy campaigns to promote excellence in teaching practice at the highest levels of policy making, and providing grants to partner organizations that offer innovative solutions in support of its mission. Varkey is founder and chairman of the global advisory and educational management firm GEMS Education, which is one of the largest operators of private kindergarten-tograde-12 schools in the world.

BY A STAFF WRITER RICK, NJ -- A local couple charged with murdering Indian American Trupal Patel has been ordered to remain in jail without bail at a pre-trial hearing in which more charges were added to their list of crimes. Raquel Garajau, 20, and Joseph Villani, 21, are accused in the murder of Patel, 29, whose body was found on February 22 in Shark River Park in Wall Township, New Jersey. Prosecutors allege that Villani killed Patel--alleged to be a drug dealer–at Villani’s home on February 6. Patel was reported missing by his family on February 9. Patel’s 2003 Jaguar was found outside Villani’s home. Villani was wearing Patel’s watch when he was arrested, and confessed to the police: “OK, I did it, I did it. Raquel had nothing to do with it.” Villani and Garajau are currently facing trial for 13 counts of first-degree felony murder, robbery, and possession of an unlawful weapon, among other charges. They had been dealing in cocaine, marijuana, and Ecstasy for months before Patel’s body was found. Nine months before Patel’s murder, he was arrested for possessing large amounts of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. The police also found $61,000 cash at his home. Hours after Villani shot Patel, the pair went shopping for a “promise ring,” claimed prosecutors in court. Villani also allegedly bought a PlayStation 4 and deposited money into his bank account. It was unclear how much money the couple had stolen from Patel, but they also managed to steal some marijuana which they immediately sold. Patel was born in Nadiad, India, and raised in New Jersey. He was killed four days before his 29th birthday.

Thieves target cars at UPS parking lot

Visa benefit for woman in bitcoin scheme case BY A STAFF WRITER ONG ISLAND, NY -- Federal authorities say a Pakistani-born woman accused in a bitcoin scheme to help the Islamic State group got a visa allowing her into United States because of her family ties. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Zoobia Shahnaz, a naturalized US citizen living on Long Island, benefited from a family-based immigration system Republican President Donald Trump says threatens national security. Earlier this month, Shahnaz, 27, was charged with laundering bitcoin and wiring money to the Islamic State group. After quitting her job, she was stopped at Kennedy Airport in July attempting to fly to Pakistan. Shahnaz’s lawyer has said she was trying to help Syrian refugees.

L

BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- Thieves targeted workers at a southside UPS facility on December 23. At the end of their early morning shift, 51 employees found their cars had been broken into. The vehicles were parked in an employee parking lot off Kirbyville Street. In a video, posted to his Facebook page, Mason Brownlow counted the damaged cars one by one. Brownlow, who has worked at the UPS ‘hub’ for the last five years, had his car broken into. Brownlow lost an iPhone, presents for his son, shoes, and cash. “Nobody saw anything. Fifty-one cars got broken into and nobody saw anything.” Brownlow said, adding that his frustration about the crime includes the lack of security camera video from the parking lot.

H The Trump administration used terrorrelated incidents involving immigrants as

ammunition for his efforts to overhaul the nation’s immigration policies.

Gold nanoparticles to fight viruses When the viruses bind to the gold nanoparticles to infect them, the resulting pressure deforms the virus and opens it, rendering it harmless. Unlike other treatments, the use of pressure is non-toxic esearchers have developed gold nanoparticles that can potentially “trick” viruses into thinking they are invading a human cell and then destroy them — a finding which would help develop a single drug to combat viruses that cause diseases such as HIV, dengue, papillomavirus, herpes and Ebola, all at the same time. The novel nanoparticles is unique in that it achieves permanent damage to the viral integrity without damaging living cells, the researchers said. Moreover, the broad-spectrum antiviral drugs would also help curb the antimicrobial resistance resulting from the over-prescription of antibiotics, revealed the study published in the journal Nature Materials. “Doctors often prescribe antibiotics in response to the viral infections, since there is no other drug available. But antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, and this blanket use fosters the development of virus mutations and a build-up of resistance in humans,” Stellacci informed.

omen with high blood sugar early in pregnancy may raise their baby’s risk of developing a congenital heart defect, according to a study published in The Journal of Paediatrics. While it has been long known that diabetes in pregnancy raises the odds for congenital heart defects in babies. The new findings reveal that risk extends even to women without diabetes in their earliest part of pregnancy, when the foetal heart is forming. “Most women who have a child with congenital heart dis-

ease are not diabetic,” said James Priest, assistant professor at the Stanford University in California. The results showed that the risk

of giving birth to a child with a congenital heart defect was elevated by eight percent for every increase of 10 milligrams per

deciliter in blood glucose levels in the early stages of pregnancy. “We found that in women who don’t already have diabetes or develop diabetes during pregnancy, we can still measure risk for having a child with congenital heart disease by looking at their glucose values during the first trimester of pregnancy,” Priest added. The team examined medical records from 19,107 pairs of mothers and their babies born between 2009 and 2015, including details of the mothers’ prenatal care, including blood test results and any cardiac diagnoses made for the babies during pregnancy or after birth.

TORONTO: A drug commonly prescribed for helping people quit smoking may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular event, says a study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. While varenicline has been known to triple the chances of a person quitting smoking, patients who were prescribed the drug were 34 percent more likely to have an emergency department visit or hospitalization for a cardiovascular event while taking the drug. — IANS

Analyzing blood samples may Anti-arthritis drug to treat skin cancer help detect multiple sclerosis IANS, LONDON

LONDON: Multiple sclerosis (MS) — a disease of the brain and spinal cord, can be detected by simply analyzing blood samples, according to a study published in the journal Analytical Methods. The current procedure for detection of the disease requires the invasive, often painful, process of collecting fluid from the brain and spine. The research identified two natural biomarker compounds, which have been linked to multiple sclerosis. The compounds, sphingosine and

dihydrosphingosine, were found to be at significantly lower concentrations in the blood samples from the patients suffering multiple sclerosis. As well as offering a diagnostic tool to identify MS, the discovery will aid the investigation of the role of the compounds in the disease and assist potential new drug development, the — IANS researchers said.

C

ombining the treatment for the most deadly form of skin cancer with a common anti-rheumatic drug could provide more effective results, a new research published in the journal Oncotarget, has shown. The findings showed that using "leflunomide" — an immunosuppressive drug approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis — in combination with another melanoma drug, selumetinib almost completely stopped the growth of a melanoma tumor in mice.

By combining therapies, it’s possible to attack the disease from several angles.

"By combining therapies, it's possible to attack the disease from several angles, which makes it harder for the melanoma to develop resistance to any of the drugs," said

Grant Wheeler from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK. "Our research has shown that there could also be further benefits — by joining these two drugs together you may be able to enhance their effects, getting a treatment that is more than the sum of its parts," Wheeler said. Although only five percent of skin cancer cases involve melanoma, it causes the majority of deaths from the disease. If caught early, melanoma is very treatable, but once the cancer has metastasized or spread, then the treatment becomes more difficult.
