Peter Thomson, President, General Assembly, said the practice of yoga was the embodiment of the saying, “Healthy minds in healthy bodies,” and its role in ensuring healthy living directly linked it to the UN’s SDGs. When yoga reached Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS: The UN began the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations with the release of stamps, a water puja and meditations for peace in the world’s most diverse gathering of nationalities, religions and races. More than 1,000 people, including permanent representatives of several nations, diplomats, UN staff and yoga enthusiasts attended the outdoor “Yoga Session with Yoga Masters” session this week at the UN headquarters on the eve of the Third IDY. A unique element in this year’s event projecting India’s soft power was the water puja ceremony. As water was symbolically poured over a globe, participants raised their hands heavenwards praying for clean water for all and for reclaiming the sanctity of water, the sustainer of life and the link of humanity. That meshed in with the UN push

Trump denounces North Korea after freed US student dies

Warmbier was admitted in a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 13 after he had been turned over in a state of coma with serious brain injuries by North Korean authorities

US President says China has failed over North Korea

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump denounced North Korea as “a brutal regime” after a 22year-old American university student held prisoner by Pyongyang for over a year before being returned in comatose condition died this week. “It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home. Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2.20 p.m.,” Otto’s parents Fred and Cindy Warmbier said in a statement cited by Efe news. Warmbier was admitted in a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, on June 13 after he had been turned over in a state of coma with serious brain injuries by North Korean authorities. “Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today,” the student’s distraught family said. The parents said that when their son arrived in Ohio, he was unable to speak or respond to stimuli, but the “anguished” look on his face changed the day after his arrival and he seemed to be “at peace”. Trump sent his “deepest condolences” to Warmbier’s family, say-

New curbs on travel, business with Cuba WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump announced that he was reversing crucial pieces of what he called a “terrible and misguided deal” with Cuba and will reinstate travel and commercial restrictions eased by the previous administration, the media reported. During a speech this week in Miami’s Little Havana, the epicenter of a Cuban exile community that supported him in the election, Trump said he was keeping a campaign promise to roll back the policy of engagement started by former President Barack Obama in 2014, which he said had empowered the communist government in Cuba and enriched the country’s repressive military, The New York Times reported. —IANS

ing: “Otto’s fate deepens my administration’s determination to prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that do not respect the rule of law or basic human decency. “The US once again condemns the brutality of the North Korean regime as we mourn its latest victim,” he added. Pyongyang is still holding three Americans hostage, CNN reported. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who helped push for Warmbier’s release, said the US holds North Korea accountable for an unjust imprisonment. “Let us state the facts plainly:

Otto Warmbier, an American citizen, was murdered by the Kim Jong Un regime,” said US Senator John McCain. South Korean President Moon Jae-in sent his condolences to Warmbier’s family. Warmbier, a one-time high school football player and homecoming king, was travelling in Beijing in December 2015 when he signed up for a five-day tour of North Korea with a Chinese company. Warmbier was detained at the Pyongyang airport in January 2016, charged with a “hostile act” against the country’s authoritarian government and convicted less than two months later of trying to

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has admitted that China has not succeeded in getting North Korea to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. Trump’s statement, delivered in an almost cavalier tweet, was an extraordinary admission of failure in his strategy for dealing with the North Korean regime of Kim Jongun, New York Times said. Given how ardently the US had sought the cooperation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump upended much of that work in 140 characters, tweeting that Chinese efforts have “not worked out”. “While I greatly appreciate the efforts of President Xi and China to help with North Korea, it has not

Upon his arrival in the US, Warmbier was taken immediately to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where doctors said that two M.R.I. scans sent by the North Koreans indicated that he had sustained a catastrophic brain injury shortly after his conviction. The North Korean regime claimed that Warmbier suffered an

worked out. At least I know China tried,” Trump wrote. The tweet, which came hours before the US and China were set to meet in Washington to talk about North Korea, caught multiple Trump administration officials off guard, leaving them scrambling as they tried to figure out what exactly the President meant, CNN reported. For months, Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and top aides have staked any progress dealing with North Korea’s burgeoning nuclear programme on China’s involvement. Hanging over the June 20 tweet was the death of Otto Warmbier, an American college student who died after spending 17 months in detention in North Korea.

attack of botulism and was given a sleeping pill by his captors but he fell into a coma, a narrative that the family has refuted. In a related development, the South Korean Defense Ministry said the US will send two strategic B-1 bombers to the Korean Peninsual to take part in joint drills with the South Korean Air Force, Efe news reported.

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump has proposed to install solar panels on the wall he wants to be built along the border with Mexico, so that the energy produced will help finance it and that Mexico “will have to pay a lot less money”. “We’re thinking of something that’s unique, we’re talking about the southern border, lots of sun, lots of heat. We’re thinking about building the wall as a solar wall so it will generate energy and pay for itself,” Trump said this week during a rally in the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “And this way, Mexico will have to pay much less money. And that’s good, Right?” The idea of putting solar panels on the wall had already been circu-

Kovind support isolated case, but can affect unity: JD-U

IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Opposition on June 22 announced it will field former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar against the NDA’s Ram Nath Kovind in the Presidential election. Congress President Sonia Gandhi announced Meira Kumar’s name at a meeting attended by 17 political parties including the Left, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP, DMK and National Conference. Talking to reporters, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, said: “There could not have been a better candidate than Meira Kumar for the post of President.” Meira Kumar, a Dalit from Bihar, is daughter of former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram. A lawyer and a former diplomat, she was the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha. But Kovind looks set to be the next President as NDA got the support of JD-U for Kovind in the President’s election boosting the numbers for the ruling side. The setback for the Opposition

IN BRIEF ‘Will satisfy everyone on cattle slaughter’ NEW DELHI: Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan on June 22 said the government “won’t leave a single person unsatisfied” regarding new rules governing the sale of cattle for slaughter. “This is a 50-year-old law and we followed the Supreme Court order while changing it. We are still inviting and receiving representations. “One thing we can assure is that the government won’t leave a single person unsatisfied,” he said at a program marking the 250th anniversary of Survey of India.

India-US trade win-win situation: Ministry NEW DELHI: Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US, the Commerce Ministry said bilateral trade was a “win-win” situation for both the countries even though the balance of trade was not in America’s favor. came at a meeting of JD-U legislators and MPs in which Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and several MLAs expressed their opinion that the NDA candidate and his credentials are good given that he hails from a Dalit community and has a humble background. With possible support of JD-U, the vote share of NDA in the electoral college go up to almost 63 per cent. “The party has decided to support Ram Nath Kovind. As the party has decided to support Kovind, there is no need for it to

attend the meeting of opposition parties being held in New delhi,” said JD-U spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan. More support for the NDA candidate poured later as Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK faction on Wednesday announced its support for Kovind. The decision was announced by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami. NDA’s sulking constituent Shiv Sena is also supporting Kovind. “We are supporting Ram Nathji’s candidature and our best wishes are with him,” Sena President Uddhav

NEW DELHI: Even though Bihar’s ruling JD-U said its breaking ranks with the Opposition on the July 17 Presidential election was an “isolated” case, the development could cast a shadow on a joint front against the NDA government in the 2019 general elections. Janata Dal-United leader K.C. Tyagi said his party’s decision was an “isolated incident” and said it will not affect Opposition’s unity in putting up a joint fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government in 2019. “We will not attend the meeting but this is an isolated incident. Thackeray said after a 90-minute meeting with his party leaders at his Bandra home in Mumbai. The Sena, which shares power at the Centre and in Maharashtra, has been in a love-hate relationship with the BJP. On Monday, Thackeray was critical of Kovind’s choice, describing it as caste appeasement.

are, and will continue to be, a part of the greater opposition unity (for 2019 elections),” he said. Communist Party of India National Secretary D. Raja said though the JD-U move was a setback it should not be read as a crack in Opposition unity. “Already there are cracks in the JD-U. It’s Kerala MP Veerendra Kumar has revolted. (Bihar Chief Minister and JD-U chief) Nitish Kumar or the JD-U did not initiate the idea of a united opposition. It was initiated by all opposition parties. It was a collective initiative. If one party goes, it doesn’t mean the opposition unity has cracked,” Raja said.

The Sena didn’t vote with the NDA in the last two Presidential polls. The NDA, including Sena and the PDP of Jammu and Kashmir, which also extended support to Kovind this week, commands the support of 48.93 per cent in the electoral college made up of MPs and MLAs.

ll the parties participating in the GJM-sponsored all party meeting in Darjeeling unanimously decided to continue the indefinite strike in the north West Bengal hills in demand of a separate Gorkhaland state and to protest the alleged police atrocities and high-handedness in the region. The representatives of 12 political including the Congress and BJP that participated in Tuesday’s meeting also vowed to boycott the state government announced all party meeting on June 22 in Siliguri. “All of us agreed on the one point agenda of separate Gorkhaland. The indefinite strike in the hills would continue as a protest against the police high-handedness and atrocities on the people of the hills,” Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) Assistant Secretary Binay Tamang told IANS. “All the political parties that participated in today’s meeting, would boycott the all-party meeting called by the state government on June 22 in Siliguri,” he added. The GJM leader also said that they would urge the Central government to intervene in the current situation of unrest in the hills and also put forward the demand

of Gorkhaland. “We have already asked for Centre’s intervention regarding the issue of Gorkhaland and the present situation in the Darjeeling hills. That part is also discussed in the meeting,” he said. Apart from the convener GJM, major political parties in the hills including ex-Trinamool Congress ally Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF), Harka Bahadur Chettri’s Jana Andolan Party, Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League and a non-political organization named Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh participated in the meeting. The representatives of Congress and BJP were also present.

Meanwhile, sporadic incidents of violence and multiple rallies amid the patrolling of security forces marked the sixth day of the indefinite shutdown in the hills. Braving the heavy downpour, several pro-Gorkhaland activists flooded the streets of Kalimpong shouting slogans like “we want Gorkhaland.” Similer rallies were organized in Darjeeling and Mirik. In Darjeeling, a mob allegedly vandalized and torched a state government vehicle in front of the building of the Information and Culture Department. Two security guards were injured during the scuffle.

GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling has come out in support of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland, to be carved out of hill areas in West Bengal. “The fulfilment of the constitutional demand of the people in the Darjeeling hills, which is deeply connected with the national identity of the Indian Gorkhas, will provide long-awaited justice to their patriotism, which has been second to none,” Chamling said in a letter written to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday and made available to the media. “The creation of Gorkhaland will restore permanent peace and prosperity in the region. Sikkim will be hugely benefited as her developmental tempo can thus be maintained,” the Chief Minister said. Chamling also highlighted the problems Sikkim faced due to recurring blockading of its lifeline National Highway-10. “The blockade of transportation of essential goods and the unrest causes unmanageable inconvenience. Also, the atmosphere of uncertainty along NH-10 poses great threat to lives as well,” he said.

Giant leap for Ram Nath Kovind Prime Minister Modi hailed Kovind's choice as the NDA's presidential candidate, saying he would make an 'exceptional' President and continue to be a strong voice for the poor and the marginalized IANS, NEW DELHI

A

man of humble origin and a low-profile leader, Ram Nath Kovind emerged the dark horse in the presidential race and, if elected, will be the second Dalit President of the country. Born in Paraunkh village in Kanpur rural of Uttar Pradesh two years before Independence, Kovind, who will turn 72 in October, hails from the Koli (weaver) community. Always unassuming, Kovind worked through the ranks to become a national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and headed the party's Scheduled Castes Morcha for three years from 1999. A story doing the rounds after his name was announced as presidential nominee of the ruling NDA was that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had wondered who Kovind was when he was appointed as the Governor of the state in 2015. A lawyer by profession, Kovind had practised in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court for 16 years. He was also a central government counsel for some time. Kovind served two terms in the Rajya Sabha member (1994-2006)

and was member of a number of parliamentary committees, including home, welfare of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and Hindi Shiksha Samiti. He also served as member on the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management — Kolkata and

that of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Lucknow. He has represented India at the United Nations and addressed the United Nations General Assembly in October 2002. Kovind has worked for the rights of weaker sections, particularly the

Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and women. He joined the movement of SC/ST employees against the central government over 1997 orders, which adversely affected their interests. The orders were subsequently nullified by the amendments adopted during the

first National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s regime. Moreover, Kovind also worked for providing free legal aid to the poor and weaker sections of the society as an advocate. During his term as a member of Parliament, Kovind helped in construction of school buildings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). Kovind was also general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Koli Samaj. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Kovind's choice as the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) presidential candidate, saying he would make an ‘exceptional’ President and continue to be a strong voice for the poor and the marginalized communities. Modi also said that Kovind's knowledge and understanding of the Constitution would benefit the nation. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar lauded Kovind's term as the state's Governor and said he served “exceedingly well”. “The ideal relationship that should be with the state government... he acted accordingly,” Kumar said.

A museum tracing 4,500 year history of toilets Based in New Delhi, Sulabh International Museum of Toilets details the evolution of sanitation from 2,500 BC to date MUDITA GIROTRA, NEW DELHI

F

ull of strange facts and objects, our museums and history books carry some very interesting stories from bygone times. But one peculiar piece that doesn't find space anywhere is about a French monarch's struggle with constipation that led him to have a commode built under his throne. Height of glory for toilets was reached when King Louis XIV gave audience while using it, prompting his court jester to remark that he found it a bit strange that while the king preferred to eat in privacy, he chose to ease himself in public. The replica of his throne is on display at the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets, in the Dwarka area of west Delhi, which traces 4,500 years of history of toilets. Not as big as other museums in the city, Sulabh has an amazing col-

lection of intriguing facts, pictures and objects detailing the evolution of sanitation from 2,500 BC to date. The very fact that there is a museum displaying types of toilet seats — from wooden to ornamental, from electric to floral, may come as a surprise to many.

has a long history, possibly older than that of the Roman Empire. Sanitation has been the index of civilization and the museum artefacts are displayed chronologically to map the developments beginning from the Indus Valley civilization during the third millennium BC

The existence of toilet facilities

progressing on to the latest developments in the 20th century. Tracing the history of the evolution of toilets seems a bit ironical in India, where, even today, many people defecate in the open, often near railway tracks. But India was one of the pioneers in this field. The exhibition room displays write-ups on and drawings and replicas of toilets and sanitation

practices from ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Greece, Jerusalem, Crete and Rome. According to the literature published by the museum, there was a lot of jest and humor relating to toilet habits and toilet appurtenances. Ornately carved and painted uri-

nals and commodes from the country attract attention and are a source of amusement. The pictures of medieval water closets at the museum are worthy of mention. The entry in the museum is free, and it is open on all days except national holidays.

CAPE TOWN: South Africa’s Parliament said it wants clarification regarding the naturalization process of the controversial Indian Gupta family. “The Parliament has resolved to invite Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba and Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) Mkuseli Apleni to give facts on the naturalization process of the Gupta family,” Parliament spokesperson Malatswa Molepo said. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs had initiated a process to engage the DHA on the matter because it considered the matter to be in the public interest, Xinhua news agency quoted Molepo as saying. He added that the resolution also responds to the call to expedite the probe into the issue. Gigaba, who became the Finance Minister in April, granted naturalization to the Guptas when he was the Minister of Home Affairs. The Gupta family’s naturalization, which was revealed recently by social media, has sparked a public outcry. The Guptas, who allegedly keep close ties with President Jacob Zuma and his family, have been under fire for exerting undue influence on Zuma in the appointment of cabinet ministers and the awarding of lucrative contracts with state-owned companies, known as “state capture”.

he many aspects of everyday Indian life — history, culture, language, family relationships and marriage — that we in India tend to take for granted are often major issues of contention for NRIs living overseas an estimated 30 million of them spread across over 150 countries. Even as they go on with their lives in different countries across the globe, there is always an underlying desire to inculcate these “Desi” aspects into the lives and habits of their children. A recent book by a former journalist, who faced difficulty in selling “India” to her children, serves

to be an apt manual on the upbringing of Indian diaspora children overseas. Titled “East or West,” the book has been written by Vinati Sukhdev. The author opens with an elaborate explanation on the concept of what goes into making us Indian, which she finds hard to define specifically. Nonetheless, meaningful family relationships, hard work leading to material success, being tolerant of others and being spiritual are some

visible examples that Sukhdev identifies as hallmarks of Indian ethos. She states that “being Indian” means counting on all such positive values and ensuring that children growing up in a foreign eco-system are exposed to them. But it is not going to be an easy journey for parents because most children growing up outside India are likely to rebel at what they may consider “foreign and strange requests” from their parents. The peer pressure that kids are subjected to may further strengthen this resentment. The author seeks to impress upon NRI parents to recognize the fact that their children will never be as Indian as they are.

Modi harps on yoga power

rime Minister Narendra Modi spent some 20 minutes out in drizzle doing yogic ‘asanas’ as lakhs of enthusiasts in various states stretched, twisted their bodies and performed breathing exercises on the third International Yoga Day this week. Leading the celebrations at a raindrenched Ramabai Ambedkar Sthal in the Uttar Pradesh capital, Modi described yoga as a binding factor for the global community and underlined its importance towards creating health, wealth and wellness. Addressing a gathering of over 45,000 people, the Prime Minister, wearing a yoga-themed white Tshirt and white trouser, said yoga was as important as salt in food and urged all Indians to embrace yoga as a part of life. “There are many countries which don’t know our language, are not aware about Indian culture or traditions but they too are practising yoga. Much like it connects the mind with the soul, yoga is playing an important role in connecting the world,” he said. Modi said since the UN declared June 21 as the International Day for Yoga in December 2014, awareness about it was rising leading to a new job market. He said new yoga training institutes had developed and demand

In Left-ruled Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan pressed people to be ‘secular’ while embracing yoga. In Bihar, the ruling alliance led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stayed away from the celebrations. But Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, including Union Ministers, took part in the ceremonies.

When yoga reached Pakistan Pakistani yoga guru Shamshad Haider, who was born in Pakistani Punjab, runs over 50 clubs across the country and is emphatic that yoga has nothing to do with Hindu religion

he third International Yoga Day was celebrated in Pakistan too but on a muted scale. The organizers said a much bigger event will follow after Ramadan ends. Pakistani yoga guru Shamshad Haider, who runs over 50 clubs across the country, said in a telephonic interview from Islamabad: “Due to Ramdan and people preparing for Eid, we could not organize a big event this year.” “We have routine sessions in all our clubs on this day but after Eid we are preparing for a much larger event in Rawalpindi,” Haider, 48, told IANS. He said his team expected more than 1,000 people to take part. The Indian High Commission also organized a yoga camp in Islamabad last week, attended by India’s envoy Gautam Bambawale and other diplomats. day, Haider, founder of Yoga Pakistan and Way of Nature, says his clubs have people from all religions. “It (government) never stopped us from doing yoga. It has granted us permission to hold yoga camps on its land and has also allowed us to promote yoga.” Yogi Haider — as he is known

— said he doesn’t want any help from the government or the Indian High Commission to hold events. Born in Pakistani Punjab, Haider is emphatic that yoga has nothing to do with Hindu religion. Last year, on the second International Day of Yoga, Haider did yogic asanas along with 20,000 yoga students.

That meshed in with the UN push

for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to better the life of people. Speakers stressed yoga’s place in helping reach them. Peter Thomson, President, General Assembly, said the practice of yoga was the embodiment of the saying, “Healthy minds in healthy bodies,” and its role in ensuring healthy living directly linked it to the UN’s SDGs. Stephen Cutts, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Central Support Services, released a set of 10 IDY stamps with Thomson.

Shiv Sena supports Kovind Sena thus joins the NDA ranks for the first time in 15 years in a presidential election

Shiv Sena claims credit for RBI accepting old notes

OPS-led faction supporting Kovind

CHENNAI: The AIADMK faction led by former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam this week announced its support for NDA Presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind. The group said in a statement that the decision was taken after a meeting of legislators and MPs chaired by Panneerselvam here. This followed a request from BJP President Amit Shah, the statement said. On June 21, Tamil Nadu’s ruling AIADMK faction announced its support for Kovind. That decision was announced by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami. Palaniswami said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sought support for Kovind over telephone and the decision was taken after consulting party legislators and ministers.

fter keeping ally BJP in suspense for 24 hours, the Shiv Sena this week said NDA presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind was a “good choice” and extended full support to his candidature for the July 17 election. The Sena, however, reiterated that Sena’s “first choice” for next President was Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, followed by agro-scientist M.S. Swaminathan. With its decision on support, the Sena thus joins the National Democratic Alliance ranks for the first time in 15 years in a presidential election, after acting tough for a couple of months in the run-up to the election to the top elected

post in the country. “The (support) decision was taken unanimously by party leaders. We fully support Ram Nathji’s candidature and our best wishes are with him,” Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray told the media after a 90-minute party meeting at his Bandra home this evening. He said the Sena was not opposed to the candidacy of Kovind whom he dubbed a “good choice”. The Sena leader said he hoped Kovind will do well for the country’s people as the next President. The BJP’s oldest ally had last voted with the NDA in 2002 when it extended support to the candidature of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was elected the President. Subsequently, in 2007, the Sena supported Congress’s Pratibha Patil, and Pranab Mukherjee in

MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena has claimed credit for the central government granting permission to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to accept the demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. “This was Sena President Uddhav Thackeray’s demand a few days ago and later our minister Diwakar Raote also raised it,” said a party official. Nearly eight months after demonetization, just before midnight on Tuesday, the Centre issued orders to the RBI to accept the old scrapped Rs 500-Rs 1,000 currency notes lying with all the District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs). Significantly, the development took place barely three hours after the Shiv Sena on June 20 evening

2012, with both entering the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Thackeray said it was wrong to suggest that the Sena had always adopted a confrontationist stance towards the Bharatiya Janata Party on all issues. “That is not our style. But wherever we don’t agree with the BJP, we will oppose them,” the Sena leader said. As for senior Congress leaders Meira Kumar and Sushilkumar Shinde, who both hail from the Dalit community, as presidential

Mani assured justice to Joy’s family. “The state cabinet will take a compassionate approach in this case and will do the needful,” Mani told the media here. (BJP President) Amit Shah informed me on Sunday that in view of Swaminathan’s advanced age (he will turn 92 in August) and frail health, it was not possible to propose his name,” Thackeray said. There was no official reaction from the BJP on the promised Sena support till late night. However, in 2017 again Joy was treated roughly by the officials. This, the locals said, forced him to write a letter to the officials that he would have no other option but to commit suicide if the authorities did not accept his land tax. Village Council chief Shiji said the state authorities were requested to extend a helping hand to the family. “We requested them to provide a state government job to one member of the deceased’s family.” Shiji also said that it was understood that Joy had taken a loan of Rs 1 million. Kozhikode District Collector U.V. Jose who arrived to pacify the furious locals assured action against the erring officials. Jose said he would see to it that Joy’s land tax was accepted on Thursday, and that he would recommend write-off of Joy’s loan and a state government job to one of his family members. Joy is survived by his wife and three daughters. While two of his daughters were married, the third is a student.

Plans to scrap free school meals,

ration winter fuel payments for pensioners, repeal the Fixed-term Parliaments Act, and introduce the “dementia tax” for funding social care have been swept away by the election result, the daily said. Grammar schools were not mentioned at all, despite the Conservative manifesto pledge to consult on opening new selective schools. Following the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London, said the monarch, the government is to establish a new commission to counter extremism and “stamp out extremist ideology in all its forms”. The speech also referred to issues and problems linked to the digital age. The Queen said: “A new law will ensure that the UK retains its world-class regime protecting personal data, and proposals for a new digital charter will be brought forward to ensure that Britain is the safest place to be online.”

2 Macron allies resign from cabinet amid funding scandal PARIS: Two more ministers in French President Emmanuel Macron’s recently-assembled cabinet handed in their resignation amid an ongoing probe into alleged misuse of European Parliament funds in their centrist party. Justice Minister François Bayrou and Minister for European Affairs Marielle de Sarnez were the latest Democratic Movement (MoDem) cabinet members to quit, following the departure of Defence Minister Sylvie Goulard on Tuesday, Efe news reported. Speaking to Europe 1 radio, government spokesman Christophe Castaner said Bayrou’s decision was a “personal choice” and suggested it simplified the situation for Macron. Bayrou is expected to make a statement later and Sarnez is set to move to preside over MoDem’s lower parliamentary group, where its 42 lawmakers back Macron’s La République En Marche! (LREM), which has an

outright majority. All MoDem members that were originally appointed to the cabinet by Macron after his ascension to the Élysée Palace have since resigned. There was speculation as to whether the party would secure any ministerial positions after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe unveils his new government later on Wednesday. A close ally of Macron, Richard Ferrand, who was until Monday Minister of Territorial Cohesion, also left the cabinet but retained his role as LREM Secretary-General amid a preliminary probe into accusations of nepotism. This slew of resignations came as a blow to Macron, who ran a campaign promising to shake up old, corrupt politics. Prosecutors opened up the preliminary investigation into claims that MoDem had allocated EP money to pay for fictitious parliamen—IANS tary assistants.

EID SIGNALS THE TRUE INDO-PAK BOND IN CHICAGO

E

id in Chicago has a uniquely distinct flavor. It is not only that time of the year when the Muslim community comes together to celebrate with full vigor the month of Ramadan followed by Eid, it is also a time when both Indian and Pakistanis join the festivities together united by their common culture, language and preferences. From many Eid Melas in the city area to Chand Raat functions dotted across the suburbs; for Indian and Pakistani community the joint love of henna designs, jewelry, ethnic wear, biryani and of course the traditions and beliefs associated with the month of Ramadan and Eid makes it ideal for them to look forward to the festivities together as one big desi community. As the numbers of desis in Chicago have increased, over the years, the festivities have gotten bigger and better. The celebrations today that mark this month are now not only limited just to Muslims. Community leaders from both India and Pakistan confirm that people across faith make it a point to experience the revelry that lasts for a month and culminates into the festival of Eid.

Especially in a multicultural city like Chicago, the festival for many is a sweet reminder of how all desi communities like Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Muslims and non-Muslims have so much in common and how they love to participate in each other’s functions. Ramadan the ninth month of the Muslim calendar is considered auspicious and is marked by fasting through the month. Traditionally Muslims not only abstain from eating and drinking from daybreak till sunset but also pay special emphasis on leading pious lives and increasing charity and good deeds. For thousands of Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis who are settled in the US, the festival serves as an important reminder for them to recreate the same brotherly spirit that is reminiscent of Ramadan back home. The fact that people across faiths and communities join in the celebration makes the event even richer and significant for the entire desi community. Mafat Lal Patel one of the founders of Patel Brothers, the best known desi grocery chain across the US says, “We have not just Indian and Pakistani employees but also Malaysian

Muslims who feel equally at ease celebrating the festival with us. Our patrons are from across the communities and we take special care to stock Ramadan specific food like dates and sewayin. We also give bottles of mango juice to our customers on Eid across the US. It’s a tradition that we follow and it makes us happy that all our customers feel connected.”

A SLICE OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN Anyone who has attended the Chand Raat (traditionally the night before Eid,

marked by the sighting of the moon) in Chicago’s Devon’s Avenue vouches that the celebrations and the spirit takes them back to their native places in India and Pakistan. Jamil Khan who is a community activist and runs a business of auto repairs in Chicago area, came to the US from Karachi, Pakistan 37 years ago. He has been actively involved in community affairs and has also served as the Chairman of the Pakistan United Parade Community. Over many decades he has seen the growing desi presence in Chicago. He also considers Eid in Chicago, unique as it is celebrated by people from

EVERYONE’S INVITED As the number of functions, iftaar parties, chand raat melas and Eid bazaar increase community activists are also noticing an important trend – that of not just desis but even Americans and other nationalities getting interested in knowing the culture and tradition behind the festivities. Iftekhar Sharif who recently attended the interfaith Iftaar party at Muslim Community Center at Morton Grove says, “ The event had participation from people across faith and storytellers from Jewish, Christian, Bahai, Hindu and Muslim faith described the significance of fasting in their culture.” The motive of the event remained to let our neighbors know our practices and beliefs. Nick Patel a prominent business owner who runs tanning salons and a chain of Mexican restaurant Taco Madre in the Chicago Land area says, “A lot of Pakistanis and Indians come to our restaurant when they want to try some Mexican food for Iftar and that’s

He says, “There may be difference between India and Pakistan on news but come to Chicago to see how we are so connected and united with each other.” He adds, “In the Devon Avenue area it is not just the Muslim shops and eateries that offer iftaar delicacies but almost every business enterprise runs a Eid special. Patel Brothers’ the famous Indian grocery chain run a special Ramadan sale and other many Indian non-Muslim restaurant owners too have special sweets and menu preparations. It is a blessing to have so much love and respect across communities and it is reflected beautifully during Ramadan.” The feeling of celebrating each other’s important occasions together is reflected across communities. Iftekhar Sharif, who hails from Hyderabad, India and runs his enterprise, National Bank Card Corporation in Chicago, is another active member of the community. He has served as the chairman and trustee of Federation of Indian Association of Chicago. Sharif says, “As an association we consider community events such as the Indian Republic Day, Independence Day, Diwali and Eid celebrations as the most important.” Sharif agrees that over the years as the population of both the communities has grown in US; it has become difficult to host one event where everyone can participate. He says, “Today there are so many big and small events that cater to the populations in certain areas but given the close cultural proximity between Indians and Pakistanis, more often than not they come together to host joint events.”

We organize a lot of concerts with Bollywood stars such as Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt and even singers such Atif Aslam. The love these celebs get from everyone is regardless of the place they are from. It also goes on to show how as one big desi community our idea of entertainment is also same.” Events such as these to invite all irrespective of their faith have been on the rise. Salman Aftab who is a community activist and has held various positions such as member of the tolerance committee and advisor to county sheriff and is presently co-chair of Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel’s

Iftar committee says, “With close to 400k Muslims now in Illinois its natural to have many and diverse celebrations of the festival. However due to cultural resonance typically Indian, Pakistanis and people from the sub continent come together to mark the festival. He explains, “While the Eid prayers in the mosques are common to everyone the Eid fetes that follow in many places are custom designed to traditions of certain countries. Just like most Indians and Pakistanis prefer an Urdu or English sermon in the mosque during the prayer, their ideas of post namaz celebrations are same too. At the Mc Cormick Place where the biggest Eid Mela is held every year it is not just Muslims from India or Pakistan who attend but desis from all faiths come over and that’s what makes it a moment of great pride for everyone.” Aftab points out, “What is also extremely significant is that on a city level there is a participation from American politicians, congress men and city officials in events pertaining to Ramadan and Eid.” He adds, “The Mayor of Chicago initiated the Iftar event last year and it was carried this year too.” Jamil Khan obser ves, “It is the camaraderie that marks the occasion. During Ramadan the mosques all across Chicago relentlessly serve Iftar and there is no dearth of volunteers or eateries eager to sponsor Iftar in mosques.” The Eid celebrations usually marked with henna, bangles, ethnic wear stalls, games and treats for children along with a feast stalls are cultural markers that are unique not just to one community but to the entire subcontinent and that’s what the spirit of Eid is all about – to bring people together and celebrate the joys!

THE EID CELEBRATIONS USUALLY MARKED WITH HENNA, BANGLES, ETHNIC WEAR STALLS, GAMES AND TREATS FOR CHILDREN ALONG WITH A FEAST STALLS ARE CULTURAL MARKERS THAT ARE UNIQUE NOT JUST TO ONE COMMUNITY BUT TO THE ENTIRE SUBCONTINENT WE ATTEND IFTAR PARTIES AND ALSO ON EID DAY WE DISTRIBUTE BOTTLES OF MANGO JUICE TO ALL OUR CUSTOMERS AT OUR STORES. Films can start a dialogue: Kabir Khan Ready with ‘Tubelight,’ the filmmaker who has made films on Indo-Pak relations, says a movie cannot bring any change in a society but the power of cinema can impact the human mind “It is not powerful enough to change the society; but hey, the fact that a film can make people think and discuss something itself is powerful enough.”

The filmmaker says though he is aware that a film cannot bring any change in a society, he believes the power of cinema can impact the human mind. His forthcoming film Tubelight, featuring superstar Salman Khan and his brother Sohail, is set in the backdrop of the India-China war of 1962. Tubelight revolves around two brothers and how their lives get affected by the India-China war. Kabir believes that war should not be the prime but the last solution to resolve an issue. “War cannot be a solution to any issue, it takes lives of thousands of civilians from both sides of the countries who are involved in a war. We should not take war so

lightly where our soldiers and civilians are dying! It should be the last resort,” he said. Kabir, who has made most of his films on Indo-Pak relations, points out that “terrorism not just affects us but another side of the border too. Do you know how many people lost their lives in Pakistan? Around 65,000 (people)...we talk about Taliban, do you know who are the people killed by them (the most)? Afghans!” Tubelight features Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, who is playing a pivotal role that captures an interesting situation of that era. Talking about Salman’s character, Kabir said: “In the first place the character was inherently difficult to play because of the fact that he (the character) is never completely off or completely normal, it’s in between.

MUMBAI: The Congress’ Mumbai unit asked megastar Amitabh Bachchan to refrain from acting as the Brand Ambassador for the upcoming Goods & Services Tax (GST) being rolled out from July 1. “Both Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley) know that the government is not ready nor does it have the infrastructure to roll out GST. That’s why it is using a legend like Amitabh Bachchan so that he becomes the fall guy and has to face the brickbats,” Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam said. Nirupam noted that he had the utmost respect for

the superstar and hence “wanted to caution him” against being used by government on the issue of GST. “The idea was ‘One Country, One Tax,’ but what is being rolled out is a one country and at least four taxes. Why are Indians being fooled? And why use an icon and his credibility to fool them?” he demanded.

od promise, I tried hard to laugh at this silly concoction about three bumbling bank robbers, or Bank Chor (pronounced to rhyme with an ugly cussword in Hindi) who willy-nilly end up as heroes. And we end up feeling like the biggest “c*******” (excuse the language) in the world. As the film closed with footage of Aamir Khan in Dhoom 3, and Rs 2,000 notes began to rain down from the sky, I willy-nilly ended up cursing myself for being such a diligent movie buff, always, there, faithfully watching evaluating. eteran screenwriter Salim Khan extended his support to NDA’s candidate Ram Nath Kovind for the President’s office. He said people have not heard of him much because “he has stayed away from any controversies”. Kovind, who is Governor of Bihar, was named by the NDA as its presidential candidate on Monday. “Ram Nath Kovind? Never heard of him? Poor general knowledge. Now that his name is announced as the presidential can-

didate, every one knows him. The other reason you may have not heard of him as he has stayed away from any controversies,” Salim tweeted. “You think it’s political? Well what did you expect? This is not a game of cricket being played between two friendly teams,” he added. Salim, father of superstar Salman Khan, later congratulated Kovind and slammed those who criticized the NDA for choosing him. “Congratulations to Shri Kovindji and to the ones who shortlisted his name for candidature. I hope

Film: “Bank Chor”; Director: Bumpy; Cast: Vivek Anand Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh, Rhea Chakraborty,Vikram Thapa, Sahil Vaid, Bhuvan Arora; Rating: 0 stars in our cinema when a reputed production house spews such garbage in the hope of raising a few laughs? Indeed the first 20 minutes of Bank Chor is so inept clumsy and mis-directed, with the camera moving through the trapped characters like a lost Alsatian which can’t find its way back to its owners, I wondered if it was a delayed April Fools’s joke where producer

Aditya Chopra would suddenly show up on screen and announce: “Fooled you, my dear viewers. Here’s the real film now.” Alas, this IS the real film. What you see is what you get. Run out of

the theatre, don’t bother about the ticket money(though admittedly, the money could’ve been used to feed the starving children I saw outside the theatre), just run while you still have time.

Shariq Jumani

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An aspiring neuroscientist from Karachi was critically injured in a hit-andrun on June 5 near Columbia University, New York, where he is a sophomore. Shariq Jumani, 19, was walking through an intersection at 12:30 am when a driver with a suspended license barrelled into him and fled the scene. Jumani was rushed to nearby St. Luke’s Hospital. A battery of tests determined he had sustained severe brain trauma, fractured both bones in both his legs, and had internal bleeding in his abdomen. The young Pakistani–proclaimed a ‘rising star’ by his friends–has since undergone open brain surgery, abdominal surgery, and orthopedic surgery for his fractured legs. He still needs many more surgeries, said his brother Shehryar Jumani, on the Gofundme fundraising platform. The Gofundme page, created by Shehryar, has quickly amassed $273,000 since it went online on June 10 to support the costs of Jumani’s additional surgeries and medical care. Shehryar described his brother as a perfect 4.0 GPA student, who “acutely cares for those around him. Shehryar also noted his brother’s obsessive love for cats, and said that he always wanted to bring home stray cats from around the neighborhood. The American Pakistan Foundation, which is helping with fundraising efforts, noted that Shariq Jumani is studying on a full scholarship at Columbia.

Ali Kourani, 32, eyed military and intelligence locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn as well as airports in the area for the Lebanese-based terror group, prosecutors said. He twice received sophisticated military training abroad, including learning how to fire a rocket-propelled grenade, the feds said. Kourani learned how to use these weapons when he was just 16 and came to the US legally in 2003. Six years ago, he went back to Lebanon and also learned how to fire an assault rifle and a submachine gun. “New York City region remains a focus of many adversaries, demonstrated as alleged in this instance by followers of a sophisticated and determined organization with a long history of coordinating violent activities on behalf of Hezbollah,” FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge William Sweeney said.

BY A STAFF WRITER OUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- Soulforce Leadership, a Mo u n t a i n Vi e w, Calif.-based non-profit organization, which trains youth leaders (high school students) to be peacemakers and change-makers in their own communities, recently won the Inspire Mountain View Grants Challenge, receiving a $100,000 grant to aid them in their work. The Mountain View Grants Challenge was sponsored by four companies based in the city: Symantec, Google, LinkedIn, and Synapsis. These companies and city leaders, according to a press release, came together to ask the community what they can do to create a more compassionate and equitable community. Finalists were chosen by a steering committee of business and city leaders, and then the community voted on the projects they wanted to see win the grant. Soulforce Leadership, founded by Poonam Singh, trains high school students to be peace-makers and changemakers in their communities, using principles of mindfulness, compassion, and nonviolence. The organization believes that love is a real political and social strategy to bring people together and make change happen in the world.
