US NEWS

Trump, Clinton turn presidential debate into personal war There was no sign of cordiality between the two as they entered the arena with families of both the candidates present on the occasion IANS, ST. LOUIS

‘Trump’s comments sexual assault’

H

illary Clinton and Donald Trump shook hands after ending the nastiest US presidential debate, with CNN indicating the Republican lost with only 34 per cent votes to Clinton’s 57. As the Democrat tried to pin down Trump over his video remarks about groping women, Trump launched a blistering attack against Clinton and her husband during the bitter night debate in Washington University. Unlike the first debate, there was no sign of cordiality between the two as they entered the arena with former President and the Democrat’s husband Bill Clinton and the Republican’s wife Melania Trump already seated with their extended families. The first question was from a teacher in the audience who asked if the two candidates were modelling appropriate behavior for American children. Clinton promised to work “with every American” and to be “the president for all Americans”. A cautious Trump said she agreed “with everything she said”. The explosion came soon after CNN’s Anderson Cooper questioned Trump about the 2005 video leaked by the Washington Post. “You bragged you sexually assaulted women — do you understand that?” Trump tried his best to defend his lewd comments. “No that’s not what I said. This was locker room talk. I am not proud of it.” He then turned to terrorism and “bad things happening” in the world. The video leaked sparked a dramatic rebuke of the billionaire, with dozens of Republican leaders saying he should step aside and let his running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, lead the GOP ticket. Clinton said Trump “was not fit to be president and commander in chief”. “We’ve seen him rate women on their appearance, ranking them from one to 10... It’s not only women, it’s not only this video... This is who Donald Trump is.” Trump then accused Bill Clinton of doing much worse than just talking about sexual assault and targeted Hillary Clinton of harassing a rape victim. This was hours after Trump made a surprise appearance with

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton (R) and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump hold the second presidential debate at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, the US. (Photo: IANS)

Trump slams Republican Party WASHINGTON: Presidential nominee Donald Trump slammed the Republican Party as leaders continued to distance themselves after his leaked lewd comments on women. He particularly trashed House Speaker Paul Ryan, saying he did not care about his support. “I don’t want his (Paul Ryan) support,” Trump said in an interview to Fox News. “I don’t care about his support. What I want to do is I want to win for the people,” Trump added. Trump’s attacks come a day after Ryan told his House of Representatives colleagues he would no longer defend or campaign for Trump after a 2005 video emerged showing him making obscene comments about groping women, CNN reported.

women who have in the past accused Bill Clinton of inappropriate sexual advances. The women later joined the audience. Trump went on to call Hillary Clinton a “devil” and “liar” with “hate in her heart”. But Clinton stayed calm. Trump also threatened to use the power of the American government to investigate Clinton and jail her over the private email server saga.

However, Ryan maintained that he was still endorsing and voting for Donald Trump. Arizona Senator John McCain — the 2008 presidential nominee — also withdrew his endorsement over the weekend following the release of the video on Friday that showed Trump making lewd remarks about an unidentified married woman he hoped to have sex with and boasted about how easy it was to attract women with his celebrity status and even talked about groping women. “When you’re a star, women let you do anything,” he was recorded as saying. The real-estate magnate also said that the Republicans were coming at him “from all sides” and their disloyalty was harder to fight than the Democrats. —IANS

“If I win, I am going to instruct my Attorney General to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. There has never been so many lies, so much deception. There has never been anything like it. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” Trump thundered. Clinton was less dominant than in the first debate and less effective in parrying Trump’s attacks in an encounter far more frosty than their first clash.

Clinton hammered Trump for his treatment of the parents of a Muslim solider killed in Iraq, his disparagement of a judge with Mexican heritage and for his mocking of a disabled New York Times reporter. The Republican accused her of starting the birther claim and asked her to apologize to President Barack Obama. He also mentioned WikiLeaks’ disclosures of internal emails from Democrats. Trump appeared hassled by the fact that his rival was getting more time to respond and that the moderators were not bringing up issues related to Clinton. At one point, Trump insisted that Clinton answer the question about healthcare. He insisted that the Affordable Care Act was too expensive and vowed to repeal it. Asked by a young woman in the audience about Muslims in the US being targeted, Trump said: “She won’t say the name, and Obama won’t say the name, but the name is there: ‘Radical Islamic terror’.” On his proposal to ban entry of Muslims into the US, the Republican said: “I don’t want to have hundreds of thousands of people coming in from Syria when we know nothing about their values, their love for our country.” Clinton called out Trump for denying his support for the war in Iraq. Trump interrupted and said he was always against the war in Iraq.

WASHINGTON: The White House said Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s lewd comments about women could amount to “sexual assault”. “The president found the tape as repugnant as most Americans did,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest to reporters, adding that bipartisan criticism following the disclosure proved that Trump’s remarks “constituted sexual assault,” Xinhua reported. It was the first time the White House had weighed in the controversy surrounding Trump’s 2005 recorded lewd and sexually aggressive comments about women. In the leaked audio clip, Trump made lewd remarks about an unidentified married woman he hoped to have sex with, boasting about how easy it was to attract women with his celebrity status and even talked about groping women. “When you’re a star, women let you do anything,” he was recorded as saying. The New York billionaire later apologized for the “locker room banter” in the audio. —IANS

Replying to a voter’s question, whether the candidates will be a devoted president to all people, Trump spoke about African-Americans, the inner cities and Latinos. He cited a remark Clinton made, saying that half Trump’s supporters are a “basket of deplorables”. Clinton apologized for the remark. Trump suggested he would align himself with some of America’s enemies, including Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to fight the Islamic State. “I don’t like Assad at all but Assad is killing IS. Russia is killing ISIS. And Iran is killing ISIS. And those three have now lined up because of our weak foreign policy.” When Cooper pressed Trump about his early hours Twitter rant against former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, the billionaire deflected and began talking about Clinton and Libya. He brought up the 2012 attack on the US consulate in Libya, saying Clinton ignored multiple requests for more security from the US ambassador who was killed.

Two terrorists killed as Kashmir operation ends three-day battle between security forces and terrorists holed up in a government building near here ended on Wednesday with the death of two militants, the army announced. General Officer Commanding Ashok Narula said the military operation, which began on Monday morning, was done in a manner that there would be no collateral damage. “Two terrorists have been eliminated and two weapons recovered. We will give details of other articles recovered later,” Narula told the media. “We did not want any collateral damage. So it took us time. There are 60 rooms in the building. Major credit of surgical strike goes to PM: Parrikar MUMBAI: Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday said a major share of the credit for the surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) goes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The major share goes to the Prime Minister,” Parrikar said while addressing a gathering at the Materials Engineering Technology conference. “But... I will at least claim (that) the credit is decision-making ability and planning. So that should settle the nerves of many people,” he said in an apparent dig at those accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of seeking to reap political benefit from the cross-LoC strikes. Parrikar pointed out that the September 29 operation was carried out by the Indian Army and not a political party. The Defense Minister said he does not mind sharing credit for the army’s work, including the surgical strikes to destroy the terror “launch pads”, with every citizen of the country.

“Because it was done by the army, not any political party. So all Indians, including doubting Thomases, can share the credit,” Parrikar said, referring to people who have questioned the strikes and demanded proof that they were conducted. A war of words erupted over the politicization of the strike with the opposition accusing the government of seeking to capitalize on the Indian Army’s action for electoral gains. The surgical strike came in the wake of the terror attack at an army camp in Uri town of Kashmir on September 18.

ccusing the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of unleashing “political terrorism” in Kerala, the BJP on Wednesday demanded a CBI probe into the murder of a party activist in Kannur. “One can clearly make that this is a political terrorism unleashed by goons of the LDF with the blessings and support of the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. When the patronage of the Chief Minis-

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan

ter is available to the goons and criminals, you can see the mayhem they can unleash,” BJP spokesper-

son GVL Narsimha Rao said here. Condemning the murder of Remith, a 26-year-old driver, Rao said the CPI-M led LDF was unleashing terror as it was unnerved by the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state. “In the last five months, the assault by these murderers has been on the rise, the BJP is seen as a very potent political power which is on the threshold of major success in Kerala. “Unnerved by the BJP’s rise as well as to divert attention from the corruption that is visible in Kerala,

these attacks are being orchestrated,” said Rao. “The state government has not only failed to preserve law and order but actively participated to wreck it, we demand the LDF government and the Chief Minister to immediately hand over the murder probe to the CBI,” added Rao. The BJP has also called for a shutdown in Kerala on Thursday to protest against the murder. Since Vijayan assumed office in May, four BJP and three CPI-M workers have been killed in Kannur district.

Why Dipa wants to return her BMW car IANS, AGARTALA

A

ce gymnast Dipa Karmakar, who narrowly missed out on a bronze medal in the women’s vault event at the Rio Olympics, has been placed in a tricky situation over a BMW car presented to her by the Hyderabad District Badminton Association. Dipa, along with India’s two other medallists from Rio — badminton star P.V. Sindhu and wrestler Sakshi Malik — and Sindhu’s coach Pullela Gopichand, received a BMW car in August for her achievement at the Rio Olympics.

Dipa, however, strongly refuted media reports that she wants to return the BMW car to Hyderabad District Badminton Association President V. Chamundeshwarnath who gifted her the BMW. The star gymnast insisted that her decision to return the premier vehicle is only due to maintenance problems that she envisaged facing in her north-eastern state of Tripura. “There is no showroom or service center of BMW car in Tripura. If the car developed any technical snag during driving, how would I repair this? There are also not sufficient suitable roads in Agartala

BMW car cost to my bank account. We would be happy whatever amount they give instead of the BMW car,” she added. Dipa, who hails from the state capital of Agartala, said she did not take the decision solely by herself.

Last month, India used its influence in Saarc to isolate Pakistan when it announced that it would not attend the regional group’s 19th summit, scheduled in Islamabad on November 15 and 16. India cited Pakistan’s involvement in the September 18 terrorist attack at an Army camp in Uri town of Kashmir, in which 19 soldiers died, as the reason for its decision to boycott the summit. India has blamed Pakistan for the attack, a claim which Islamabad has denied. Other Saarc nations — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka -— joined India to boycott the meeting. Indian American solving rural India’s challenges wins award Based in Gurgaon, on the outskirts of New Delhi, the SM Sehgal Foundation he founded in the late 1990s is active in around 550 Indian villages ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

D

r. Suri Sehgal, an octogenarian Indian American philanthropist trying to solve the problem of rural India’s disempowerment, has received the 2016 American Bazaar Philanthropy Award. Based in Gurgaon, Haryana, on the outskirts of New Delhi, the SM Sehgal Foundation he founded in the late 1990s is active in around 550 Indian villages. one of the greatest challenges India is facing at the moment: The disempowerment of rural India.” Delivering the third American Bazaar Philanthropy Lecture, Seghal, 84, himself urged the Indian American community to donate at least a part of their income to philanthropy. He pointed out that

roughly 27 percent of the community has a median income of $140,000 and if they commit at least $1,500 a year — which is half of what an average American household is giving annually — about $1.8 billion will be available for philanthropy. Sehgal, who came to the US in 1959, also described his journey from the pre-partition Punjab to building a successful career in the US and giving back to the country of his birth. Sehgal holds a PhD in Plant Genetics from Harvard University and a diploma in business management from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Edda, allocated most of the money they received after selling their Indiabased Proagro Group of companies to the foundation. Sehgal is the former president of the Des Moines, IA, -based Pioneer Overseas Corporation and vice president Pioneer Hi-Bred International.

Amjad Ali Khan sings for peace in Washington IANS, MUMBAI

I

ndia’s sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan and his two sons Amaan and Ayaan performed live with musicians from across the world for the Chant4Change peace concert at Washingtons Lincoln Memorial on Saturday night. The concert made use of music as the healing unifying force in wounded and terrorinfested universe. However, the rain gods played truant. Speaking after the concert, Khan said: “We three — my two sons and I — performed while it was drizzling. We dedicated our concert to world peace and harmony. We paid our humble tribute to Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Hazrat Amir Khusro who created the qawwali and tarana singing styles.” Khan and his sons began the historical Chant4Change concert with an inspirational number. “The first item was ‘We shall overcome...’ version ‘Hum honge kamyaab’. Then we rendered ‘Vaishnava jana to’, ‘Ramdhun’, ‘Raghupati raghav rajaram’, ‘Ekla cholo re’ and then we sang a tarana. We ended with Bengali folk music. We hope the whole world

soon realizes the value of peace and harmony. “Collectively, we must give our younger generations a peaceful and harmonious world. Our family feels very sad when we hear about young soldiers dying in the war, no matter which country. We feel connected with every soul, every religion and every song of the world,” Khan said. Explaining how music can unify people across the world, he said: “People of the world have to think about the value of togetherness, peace and harmony. Collectively, people of India and the world have to create a peaceful and harmonious environment for our children and younger generation. “India was one before the Partition. That is why even today, it’s Indian classical music that unifies the two countres and their people. We could only divide the land, but could not divide the music.” He is also worried about the rampancy of terror attacks even in the US. “The US should not encourage people to openly buy weapons, especially for the younger generation, as it is very dangerous not to have licence for the weapons. The greatest mockery is that every political leader talks of peace and harmony, and at the same time

very country is busy producing weapons, guns and missiles. “The future of the world looks aimless and bleak. The world is heading towards destruction... I hope the world soon understand the value of love peace and harmony.” He made a plea for artistes to be exempted from political agendas. “Art, music and musicians don’t

belong to any cult or religion. Like flowers, air, water, color, fire and fragrance, we of the artistic fraternity also belong to no religion. In our country, every classical musician is worshipped like Goddess Saraswati. If we can’t help each other, for god’s sake, don’t destroy each other. Think seriously about the future of every child.”

he Virat Kohli-led India made a perfect Dussehra gift to the cricket-mad nation as it mauled New Zealand by 321 runs in the third and final Test at the Holkar Cricket Stadium here this week. Completing a 3-0 clean sweep in the series, India have now stamped their authority and clinched the No. 1 International Cricket Council (ICC) Test ranking from Pakistan. They had already bagged the top spot after winning the second Test. Star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin once again single-handedly triggered another batting collapse of the Kiwis, to return with career-best figures of 7/59 in the visitors’ second innings, bundling them out for a paltry 153 in response to the mammoth target of 475. Ashwin, who took six wickets in the first innings of the Test, took his overall tally to 13 in the match, besides pushing a total to 27 scalps in the three Tests. The Chennai tweaker was well assisted by left-armer Ravindra Jadeja, who took two wickets in the second innings, while pacer Umesh Yadav chipped in with one wicket. Ashwin was adjudged both the Man of the Match and Series for his heroics with the cherry during the series. Such was the havoc wrought by the Indian spinners that the entire New Zealand second

BCCI calls for SGM on Saturday: Report NEW DELHI: Under pressure from the Supreme Court to implement the Justice R.M. Lodha panel recommendations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Saturday here to discuss the interim order passed by the apex court last week. The court had ordered the board and state associations to respond by October 17 whether they would “unconditionally” comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. According to a report in espncricinfo, this week’s SGM is the second such emergent meeting called by the BCCI in the last two weeks after the October 1 SGM, where a defiant BCCI board agreed to adopt some of the recommendations. Infuriated by the BCCI’s decision, the three-judge bench warned the board to stop issuing funds to errant

state associations which did not implement the recommendations. Both BCCI President Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke are currently in Cape Town, South Africa for the International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings, which started on October 10 and will culminate on October 14.

innings were wrapped up virtually in one session. Faced with a Herculean task, the New Zealanders failed to provide any kind of resistance to the Indian spinners on a track which gradually turned slow and low as the days progressed. Senior batsman Ross Taylor (32), opener Martin Guptill (29), skipper Kane Williamson (27) and stumper B.J. Watling (23 not out) got the kind of starts but failed to capitalize in their hurry for quick runs, which worked in favor of the hosts to wrap up the match on the fourth day. Earlier, riding on Cheteshwar Pujara’s brilliant 101 and opener Gautam Gambhir’s 56-ball 50, India declared their second innings at 216/3 with an overall lead of 474 runs, just before the tea break. Pujara was unbeaten on 101 runs off 148 balls with Ajinkya Rahane (23 not out) batting at the other end when Kohli decided to declare the innings midway through the post-lunch session. The Saurashtra batsman, who has been in good form in this series, thus completed the seventh century of his Test career. He has also scored three half-centuries during the series. Among the Kiwi bowlers, off-spinner Jeetan Patel was the only one to bag wickets with figures of 2/56. Patel trapped Kohli leg before shortly after lunch with a delivery that turned and hit the Indian captain on the pads after pitching just outside off stump.

osts India outclassed Bangladesh 57-20 in a league clash of the Kabaddi World Cup here. In a must-win crucial encounter in Group A, India lived up to their reputation to beat Bangladesh. Ajay Thakur scored 10 points for India after coming on as a substitute whereas Pardeep Narwal led India’s charge in the first half and ended with eight points. India have got their World Cup campaign firmly back on track after suffering a setback in the opening encounter against South Korea. This was a stern test for India but they showed their class and brushed away a good Bangladesh side with relative ease. India’s defense put on a tremendous show as they kept the Bangladesh raiders in their pocket for most of the match. Narwal got the first points for India with a raid in the third minute and Sandeep Narwal followed it with a tackle to give India 2-1 lead.

Pardeep Narwal scored his fourth raid point in the 10th minute as India inflicted an all out to lead 13-4, while Bangladesh got their first raid point in the 12th minute as they trailed 5-14.

Police have registered 43 cases on charges of spreading rumors about the health of Jayalalithaa. Chief Minister and will continue until the Hon’ble Chief Minister Selvi J Jayalalithaa resumes her duties. Selvi J Jayalalithaa will continue to be the Chief Minister,” the Raj Bhavan statement said. The 68-year-old Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was admitted to the

hospital on September 22 for fever and dehydration. The doctors later said she needed a longer stay at the hospital as she was suffering from infection and put her on respiratory support. On October 8, the hospital said: “The respiratory support is closely

watched and adjusted. Lungs decongestion treatment is being continued. All other comprehensive measures including nutrition, supportive therapy and passive physiotherapy are under way.” The ruling AIADMK has ruled out the need for an acting or temporary chief minister. Panneerselvam has earlier served as Chief Minister when Jayalalithaa had to step down in wake of her conviction in a corruption by a Bengaluru court. She had returned to the post after the Karnataka High Court acquitted her. Reacting to the development, Congress’ state unit president S.Thirunavukkarasar told IANS that it “is a welcome development for the continued functioning of the government”. He said the situation is similar to the one that existed when AIADMK founder, the late M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) was admitted to the same Apollo Hospitals in October 1984.

‘Jayalalithaa may be discharged soon’ CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa is likely to be discharged soon from hospital, Kerala Governor P. Sathasivam said. “All the specialists’ doctors informed us that there is a good response to the treatment and she is likely to be discharged soon and soon she will take over the administration of the state,” Sathasivam told the media. The Governor made the comments after visiting the Apollo Hospital with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Meanwhile, Apollo Hospital said Jayalalithaa’s health was under being monitoried by specialists. “Necessary respiratory support, antibiotics, nutrition, supportive therapy and passive physiotherapy are being given,” it said. The 68year-old Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22 for fever and dehydration. Kerala to probe reports of fake Chinese eggs IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

W

ith “artificial” Chinese eggs reportedly making their way into certain parts of Kerala, state Health Minister K.K. Shylaja this week said a probe would be launched to find out the truth. Speaking to the media, Shylaja said she has not received any complaints on this score, but she will examine the media reports and

find out whether such a product has made its way into the state. “I will now ask the Food Safety Commissioner to seriously look

into these media reports that such a product is avaliable. It would be nice if someone comes up and provides a sample of it so the tests can be conducted quickly,” said Shylaja. Reports have recently surfaced that these “artificial” eggs were coming into the state from Tamil Nadu. According to the reports, Idukki district of Kerala which is bordering Tamil Nadu is the place where this product is available.

Idukki district Medical Officer Rekha also told the media that in the wake of reports on the eggs, she too will probe the matter. “Artificial eggs”, reports say, unlike normal eggs are brown in color and if kept in the open after cracking them, flies and other insects are not attracted to them. The eggs do not spoil or rot even after cooking or leaving them out in the open, according to reports. These are unverified claims.

n an obvious reference to Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Dusshera on October 11 said the time had come to uproot terror and those who patronize the terrorists. Addressing a massive Dussehra gathering at the Aishbagh Ram Leela ground, Modi said terrorism in all forms was anti-humanity and Hindu Lord Rama represented all that was human. It was the Prime Minister’s first public speech after the September 29 surgical strikes by the Indian Army at terror launch pads in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. He made no direct reference to the surgical strikes or to Pakistan that killed an unspecified number of terrorists but made it more than clear which country he had in mind. “Those who spread terrorism need to be annihilated and those who aid terrorism will not be spared either,” Modi said in a speech laced with references to Hindu religion. Modi said India was a country that respected both Lord Krishna who led the Pandavas in the war of Mahabharata and Mahatma Gandhi who propagated non-vio-

Governor Acharya Devvrat inaugurated the festival by participating in the ‘rath yatra’ or chariot-pulling ceremony of Lord Raghunath, the chief deity, at Dhalpur ground. here. Speaking on the occasion, the Governor felicitated the people on the festival, which symbolizes the victory of truth over evil. “We should rededicate ourselves today to demolish the evils within us as well,” said Modi. “We create balance... I hope the path shown by Buddha will be our final path,” Modi said. The Prime Minister invoked Ramayana and asked people to

keep a vigil against terror and fight it the way the vulture Jatayu fought Ravana in a desperate bid to try rescue the abducted Sita from the demon. “We may not be able to become Ram, but we can all try and be Jatayu and give a befitting reply to the nefarious designs of terrorists,” he said, beginning and ending his speech with loud cries of “Jai Shri Ram, Jai Jai Shri Ram”. “If a country of 1.25 crore keeps an eye on every terrorist activity, terrorists will never succeed,” Modi said to loud cheers. The Prime Minister was gifted a silver mace, an arrow and a bow. A turban was tied on his head.

Durga puja festivities come to an end IANS, KOLKATA

T

eary-eyed devotees bade an emotional farewell, as idols of goddess Durga and her children were immersed on Tuesday in lakes, and rivers and ponds of West Bengal on Vijaya Dashami, bringing to an end five days of revelry and celebration associated with eastern India’s biggest festival. However, as decreed by the state government and the court, idols worshipped in the households or apartment complexes were to be immersed till a deadline of 6 p.m. Four household pujas were given extension till 8.30 p.m. But reports from the 17 ghats (each having a set of stairs leading to the river) on the banks of the

Hooghly said lot of idols were in the queue for the immersion even at 8 p.m. The idols of community pujas would be immersed from Thursday. The government has decided

not to allow any immersion on Muharram. There was a festive look on the banks of the Ganga and other water bodies. With drums playing the

immersion beats “Thakur thakbe kotokshon, thakur jabe bisarjan (How long will the goddess stay on earth, She will now be immersed)”, children, young and the old joined hands to slowly put the idols into the water. At Babughat, one of the prominent immersion banks in Kolkata, the rituals picked up pace from around 3 p.m. The Dashami rituals in the morning saw married women preparing the goddess and her children for their long journey back home by smearing the deities and each other with red vermilion. They also offered sweets to the god, and prayed for the wellbeing of their families and long lives of their husbands while performing these rituals.

My struggle started after my first film

A

Taapsee, who made her acting debut with the 2010 Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam, made a swift transition to Bollywood in 2013 with the film Chashme Baddoor. Asked if she faced a struggle to find good work in Bollywood, Taapsee told IANS: “In Bollywood, no, I didn’t really try to find good work at all. I have been lucky that way that the offers or opportunities fell on my lap to begin with. My struggles actually started after my first film, to keep up with the kind of response I got after the first film.” The 29-year-old actress said “just to choose the right film” was a struggle for her.

Rahman composes Nagarjuna songs for nephew praises team ‘Premam’ A IANS, CHENNAI

Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, “Premam” stars Naga Chaitanya and Shruti Haasan in the lead IANS, CHENNAI

T

elugu superstar Akkineni Nagarjuna has appreciated the team of Telugu romantic-drama Premam for doing justice to the original. Premam, which released last week, is the eponymous remake of a Malayalam blockbuster. “It’s not easy to remake a cult classic like Premam and make it a success. Take a bow Chandoo Mondeti and team Telugu Premam,” Nagarjuna wrote on his Twitter page this week. Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, Premam stars Naga Chaitanya and Shruti Haasan in the lead. The film, which is produced by S. Naga Vamsi, tracks the three phases of romance in the protagonist’s life. Anupama Parameswaran and Madonna Sebastian have essayed important roles.

Anurag’s Tamil acting debut CHENNAI: Anurag Kashyap, last seen on screen in Akira, is making his Tamil acting debut in upcoming thriller, Imaikaa Nodigal. According to a source, A. R. Murugadoss was influential in making the filmmaker-actor sign on the dotted line for the offer. Murugadoss’s erstwhile assistant Ajay Gnanamuthu is the director of Imaikaa Nodigal, which stars Atharvaa and Raashi Khanna in the lead. “When Ajay wanted to approach Anurag with the offer, it was Murugadoss who helped set up the meeting. Having worked with Murugadoss in Akira, Anurag took his word and gladly accepted the offer. He will join the sets later this month,” a source told IANS. —IANS

.R. Rahman, who is busy with Tamil film projects such as Rajinikanth’s 2.o and Mani Ratnam’s Kaatru Veliyidai, has completed composing nine songs for an upcoming yet-untitled project featuring his nephew G.V. Prakash Kumar. “Since it’s a music-based film, Rahman was required to compose all the songs even before the shooting commenced. He has also completed a few portions of the background score. The project is slated to go on the floors later this year,” a source in the know told IANS. To be helmed by cinematographer-filmmaker Rajiv Menon, the film will star Prakash in the role of a drummer.

“Most of the songs will be situational and a part of the narrative. Hence, the film features nine songs. Prakash, who is a composer himself, is gearing up to play a drummer,” he said. The makers are yet to finalize the leading lady for the movie.

Mani Ratnam resumes ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’ shooting CHENNAI: Filmmaker Mani Ratnam, who is gearing up for extensive shooting of his upcoming Tamil romantic drama Kaatru Veliyidai in

Ladakh later this month, has resumed a short schedule in Hyderabad, a source said. “He started shooting in Hyderabad earlier this month. It will be a 10-day schedule and then the team will head to Ladakh for over a month of shooting,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. Starring Karthi and Aditi Rao Hydari in the lead, the film has music by A.R Rahman. Produced by Madras Talkies, Kaatru Veliyidai also stars Shraddha Srinath, Rukmini Vijayakumar, RJ Balaji, Delhi Ganesh and veteran Malayalam actress Lalitha.

‘Remo’: Entertains but not charming enough Film: “Remo”; Director: Bakkiyaraj Kannan; Cast: Sivakarthikeyan, Keerthy Suresh, Sathish, Saranya Ponvannan, Rajendran and Yogi Babu; Rating: **1/2

W

hen you walk into a Sivakarthikeyan film, especially one like Remo, you cannot expect logic; you can’t expect to be bowled over by a great script and you definitely cannot expect to like everything you see in the film. As a viewer, you’re not pleased with the way stalking is endorsed by the film. Even though you feel sorry for the heroine who is no more than

In “Remo”, Sivakarthikeyan dons the disguise of a nurse to woo a woman.

an eye candy, you’re forced to turn a blind eye because it comes with a statutory warning — you can’t like everything you see.

Therefore, the relentless pursuit of Keerthy Suresh by Sivakarthikeyan, as much as it’s manipulative, is justified with the

dialogue — an average Joe can take every opportunity he gets to make a woman fall for him. In Remo, Sivakarthikeyan dons the disguise of a nurse to woo the woman of his dreams. He wins her over by confusing her, by making her believe that she’s making a big mistake by settling for an arranged marriage and that she can still meet her prince charming if she believes. And when Keerthy is successfully confused, Sivakarthikeyan chips in with a line — it’s easier to confuse a woman than convince her. It’s as though the makers want to prove that if you want to win over a girl, all you need to do is confuse her with lies. Despite these worrying issues, Remo is mostly entertaining. —Haricharan Pudipeddi

S. D. Burman, Bollywood’s famed music composer, composed music for over 100 movies, including Hindi and Bengali films. Apart from being a versatile composer, he was also a gifted crooner, singing in light, semiclassical and folk style of Bengal. His son, R D Burman, lovingly known as Panchamda, is the man who revolutionized Bollywood music with his unique compositions. He was deeply influenced by Western, Latin, Oriental and Arabic music genres. Many of his scores have a mix of electronic rock, disco and jazz elements. Panchamda incorporated a wide range

of these influences, delivering some of the biggest all-time hits, including Chura Liya Hai, Mehbooba Mehbooba, Bahon Mein Chale Aao, Tum Aa Gaye Ho, Noor Aa Gaya Hai, Aap Ki Ankhon Mein Kuch and O Mere Dil Ke Chain, among many others. Organizers said they had no words to describe the talent , efforts and heart- touching melodies of Kishor and Raj Sodha. “Comments from viewers on this great show were exhilarating,” said Ashwin Patel, one of the organizers, and this, he said, would induce them to host shows like this in the future as well.

The 2016 honorees will be recognized at the annual awards dinner on October 17 at Hearst Tower as part of the JBF Food Conference in New York City. An author, activist, and academic, Patel is being recognized “for his scholarship and advocacy work to change the inequalities in our world’s food system.” Patel, a New York Times bestselling author and a distinguished documentarian, has written many investigative pieces about the injustices of the food system, said a press release. Instead of culinary accomplishments, the Leadership Awards recognize specific outstanding initiatives and lifetime achievement in the realms of sustainability, food access, and public health. JBF aims to bring awareness to these issues by spotlighting visionaries in these fields. The selection criteria for this year include excellence of work, innovation in approach, and scale of impact either within a community or across the nation. Honorees were selected by previous winners.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - The state of Illinois is providing assistance to the federal government and the state of Florida by welcoming some of the most vulnerable victims of Hurricane Matthew. At least 75 children, unaccompanied minors fleeing poverty, hunger and violence from their homelands in Central America, will be arriving in Illinois from Florida following their emergency evacuation to escape the destruction of Hurricane Matthew. “We are grateful that the state of Illinois, through the hard work of Heartland Alliance, can offer these young children a temporary, safe home. It is important that in a time of crisis we all remember to offer a helping hand,” Governor Rauner said. “Our thoughts are with those in the storm’s path. We are hoping for as little destruction as possible and are evaluating every way Illinois can further help our fellow states.” “This is a great opportunity for Illinois to help in a time of crisis in the lives of children,” said Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Director George Sheldon. “These children are seeking refuge in this country out of desperation to leave behind the dangerous conditions they faced in Central America, so we are grateful that Heartland Alliance has stepped forward to provide temporary space for them until they can safely return to Florida.”

A festive atmosphere, the traditional Onam feast, a lighting ceremony, skits, song and dance capped by keynote speeches and votes of thanks by CMLA and OHM representatives heralded the daylong festivals attended by approximately 400 OHM members. Signature trademarks of Onam were on display as guests trickled in and were welcomed with the traditional Pookalam or floral carpet designed in pattern with fragrant marigolds, rose and daisy petals. The event kicked off with Onam Sadhya, a sumptuous vegetarian feast served on banana leaves, consisting of up to 21 delicacies such as rice, sambhar,

Players are timed; psychology comes into play as well as strategy”, she said. “It’s not a typical friendly game of Scrabble”. Chagti, 18, was named the championship’s best female performer by the Scrabble Association of Delhi. Scrabble is played on a board, where two to four players use the game’s 100 tiles to form words either across or down the gridded gameboard. The tiles, 98 of which have a single letter with its point total as well as two blanks that can be used for any letter, are used to form words. BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON, TX -- A Houston, Texas attorney, apparently disgruntled by the closure of a law firm he had founded, randomly shot and injured nine people on September 26 morning before he was gunned down by the police. Nathan Desai is a 46-year-old Indian American resident of Houston. Standing outside his car and behind a tree, Desai shot at cars and pedestrians until the police arrived at the scene. The suspect continued to shoot as the police attempted to intervene until he was overpowered. Acting Houston Police Chief Martha Montalvo told reporters that nine people were injured in the shootings. Three people were not seriously injured and were released after being taken to the hospital, three others were treated and sent home the same day while three others are in serious condition, but are expected to survive, said Montalvo. No officers were injured in the fracas. Multiple officers engaged with Desai as he was shooting, while other policemen entered the scene to rescue the wounded. Desai was dressed in a vintage Nazi uniform with no body armor, and shooting with a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun. He was also in possession of a tommy gun. Both weapons were purchased legally: the handgun was bought in 2005 in Houston, and the tommy gun was purchased in 2009 in College Station, Texas. More than 2,600 rounds of ammunition were also found in Desai’s car. Desai, who was licensed to carry guns, because of the nature of his law practice, was raised in Houston and practiced criminal, family, bankruptcy, civil and business law.

Widman said she had introduced Chagti to her friends over dinner--and a game of Scrabble. They were bamboozled. Widman works at the college’s international center. She learned from Chagti that Scrabble is about knowing how the language is structured.

Chagti is also a mentor for other international students adjusting to college life in the United States. The tournament included eight to 10 matches, each lasting about 15 minutes. Ekal boosts India’s rural development BY A STAFF WRITER RNAGE BURG, NY-- Ekal is pulling out all the stops on village development in India and adopting ground-breaking methodology in the way it operates in ruraltribal areas. Well, that’s the profound message that came out of Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation’s (EVF) just-concluded “International Conference” in Orangeburg, NY. This 3-day conference, meant for national committees of the US, India, Canada and other countries, was convened not only for brain-storming sessions to critically assess the progress made so far, but also to charter EVF’s course for 2017. Until now, ‘Ekal’ (as it is popularly known), had targeted 100,000 villages as its ‘goal’ for integrated development. Now, Ekal wants to reach out to all 600,000-plus rural/ tribal areas in India. Considering it is already in 62,000 villages, this was inevitable. Another reason for this ambitious undertaking is that it has picked up tremendous momentum in recent years in terms of enterprising entrepreneurs joining its fold everywhere with innovative ideas and actively pursuing various rural projects. At the conference, Himanshu Shah, CEO of ‘Shah Capital’ and ‘Mohan Wanchoo’,

Indian author named for top book award

O

Karan Mahajan

CEO of ‘EC Info systems’ each pledged $100,000 to $200,000 a year, for the next several years to uplift rural lives. Inspired by PM Modi’s ‘Swachchh Bharat’ initiative, Ekal’s ‘clean environment’ pilot project is already making its mark in some rural and tribal areas. Moreover, water conservation, organic farming, cottage industries that could empower young girls and women-folks are in full swing in most of the villages. There are 53,000 Ekal schools in operation throughout rural India that benefit

1.5 million children. Starting with this conference, Ekal-US is entering into ‘Social-Media’ arena with vengeance. The technology-savvy team, headed by Akshay Joshi includes Avinash Agarwal, Vinita Dogra, Arti Aggarwal and Sheetal Gupta. It will be guided by Prashant Shah, a new member of Ekal-USA ‘Board of Directors’ and shall be advised by Prakash Waghmare and Ranjani Saigal, as necessary. In short, there is a new dawn at ‘Ekal Vidyalaya’ on every level.

SAHARA marks 25 yrs with record fundraiser BY A STAFF WRITER RVINE, CA – A record $500,000 was raised at the 25th annual gala night of South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency (SAHARA) benefiting Indian American and other South Asian survivors of abuse, held recently at the Irvine Hotel here. The banner fundraising event, intended to continue helping the organization provide critical services, brought together over 300 supporters who were updated on its efforts while being wined, dined and entertained with a live auction, star-studded video felicitation, speeches and heart-felt stories of victims who moved from crisis to confidence. Mingling abuse and festivity is no easy task, but unveiling the dark side of humanity only aids SAHARA in advancing its cause, as highlighted by Sona Shah, board vice president and master of ceremonies who kicked off the event by sharing “sobering statistics” on domestic violence and its impact on South Asian victims. Spotlighting the across-the-board damage survivors of abuse face, board of directors chair Reshma Block and Dr. Rubina Najeeb were at the side of survivors at the podium as they shared written and personal testimonials. With many of the attendees still in tears, Ami, another survivor, summed up her story of triumph over immigration, lack of housing and a dwindled self-confidence by urging victims to “take the first step; SAHARA will take the other hundred steps for you.” SAHARA is headquartered in Artesia, Calif., with the thrust to dispense “incredibly agile and innovative services for complexities associated with abuse. Block said that SAHARA’s team of providers aid nearly 300 to 400 new clients a year, offering domestic abuse programs, transitional living, and case management for seniors, amongst an array of services.

The finalists will be revealed on October 13. Mahajan’s “The Association of Small Bomb” takes the reader to New Delhi, where a community is devastated by the losses brought on by an act of terrorism. The novel shows the reader both sides of a terrorist attack — how the loss of even just a few lives can change the fates of others and gives the reader a window into how someone might become capable of committing such atrocities. Mahajan was born in 1984 and grew up in New Delhi, India. His first novel, “Family Planning,” won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award and was a finalist for the International Dylan Thomas Prize. It was published in nine countries. Man guns down wife, son, kills himself BY A STAFF WRITER OLLEGE PARK, MD -- Authorities say a man killed his wife at their Maryland home and then drove to the Washington suburbs, where he killed his 19-year-old son and himself. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office said on September 29 that deputies checking on residents of a Bel Air home on September 28 night found 48-year-old Zarqa Siddique fatally shot. Officials say her husband, 57-year-old Nasir Siddique, was identified as the suspect, but wasn’t home. Meanwhile, Prince George’s County police say officers called to a parking lot near the University of Maryland campus found Nasir Siddique and his 19-year-old son, Farhad, fatally shot in the father’s vehicle. The police say Nasir Siddique killed his wife, then drove to College Park where he killed Farhad and himself. Siddique served as a member of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Military Monuments, Gov. Larry Hogan’s office confirmed. He was appointed in 2012 during the previous administration. He was not slated to be reappointed due to a poor attendance record at meetings, the governor’s office said. New appointments to the commission are scheduled to take place within the next several weeks. University spokeswoman Crystal Brown says Farhad Siddique was a junior at the school.

C (L-R) Sona Shah, Kalpana Patel & Reshma Block

Most non-profits struggle to survive in their formative years, but for Block, the 25 years of growth is a testament to the need within the community and also a need to continue to adapt. “We are focused on capacity building, and our mission has been updated to focus on all types of abuse in addition to domestic violence,” she said. The evening showcased celebrities Kunal Nayyar, of CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” and past SAHARA benefit emcee, along with Indian playback singer Sonu Nigam, who spotlighted SAHARA’s cause through a short-form social video to end violence. Longtime supporter and committee chair Kalpana Patel of the Tarsadia

Foundation congratulated the non-profit’s milestone and its relentless work within the community to uplift lives. Yogesh Goradia also lauded the volunteers, co-founders and board members Rekha Bajaria, Bharti Rathod, Sheela Mehta, Chandrabala and Rusi Alamshaw, Charu Modi, Pratibha Patel, Vibhuti Bhuta, Smita Patel and Sulochana Trivedi. Sarva Mangal Family Trust’s Rika and Manu Shah advocated SAHARA’s goals and made compelling calls for the community to donate. The entrepreneur and CEO of MS International closed by saying “giving is not an expense, it is an investment in dignity.”

Vitamin D cuts ADHD risk in kids LONDON: Mothers who take vitamin D during pregnancy may reduce the risk of their children developing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) — one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders. A study, which monitored 1,233 children, showed that mothers who had taken vitamin D, and had a vitamin D level (25OHD) in their umbilical blood over 25 nmol/L, had children with lower ADHD scores. The higher the level of the vitamin D in the umbilical blood, the lower were the symptoms of ADHD at the age of two-and-a-half years. For the study, the team asked participants to decide whether two images, presented on a computer at the same time, pictured the same person or two different people. The researchers set the task to differ from the face recognition tasks most of us encounter in our daily lives in two important ways: firstly, the people pictured in the images are unfamiliar; secondly, the task did not involve memory, as the images appear on the screen at the same time. While most people would typically expect perform well on these tasks, many are surprised at how many errors they make.

other’s milk may boost the immunity of a newborn in such a way that it may work against certain diseases like tuberculosis (TB) just as vaccination does, suggests new research. “Some vaccines are not safe to give a newborn baby and others just don’t work very well in newborns,” said lead researcher Ameae Walker, Professor at the University of California, Riverside School of Medicine in the US.

“If we can instead vaccinate mom or boost her vaccination shortly before she becomes pregnant, transferred immune cells during breastfeeding will ensure that the baby is protected early on,” Walker explained. Scientists have long understood that mother’s milk provides immune protection against some infectious agents through the transfer of antibodies, a process referred to as “passive immunity.” The new research, published in the Journal of Immunology,

showed that mother’s milk also contributes to the development of the baby’s own immune system by a process the team calls “maternal educational immunity.” Specific maternal immune cells in the milk cross the wall of the baby’s intestine to enter an immune organ called the thymus.

Hops in beer may lessen alcohol effects IANS, NEW YORK

B SYDNEY: Challenging the popular notion that we should drink eight glasses of water a day for good health, researchers have found that drinking too much water can put people in danger of water intoxication. Researchers from Monash University in Victoria, Australia have found a mechanism that regulates fluid intake in the human body and stops us from over-drinking. The condition can give rise to symptoms ranging from lethargy and nausea to convulsions and coma.

eer lovers have reason to cheer as researchers have found that the hops content in beer may lessen the damaging effects of alcohol on the liver. Hops, generally used to add flavor to beer, refers to the flowers of the hops plant, Humulus lupulus. Using a binge-drinking mouse model, the researchers from Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany aimed to determine whether hops in beer is involved in the less damaging effects of acute beer consumption on the liver in comparison with ethanol. Over the short-term, “our data suggest that hops content in beer is at least in part responsible for the

less damaging effects of beer on the liver,” Live Science quoted the researchers as saying. The new findings may help

explain why some earlier studies in people suggested that drinking hard liquor is more strongly associated with death from liver disease than

drinking beer, the researchers said. In the study, female mice were fed beer with hops, a special beer without hops, or plain ethanol (alcohol). Examination after 12 hours showed that the mice that consumed the beer with hops showed less build-up of fat in their livers than the mice that were given ethanol. In contrast, the mice that ingested beer without hops had about the same level of fat build-up in their livers as the mice that were fed ethanol, the study, published online in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism, showed. The new study that hops may lower formation of compounds, that are highly reactive and can cause damage to cells in the liver, Live Science reported.

erceptual downgrading of attractive persons who can turn out to be potential threats may help in sustaining relationships from temptation and keep couples from cheating on one another, finds a new study. The findings showed that to keep up a steady relationship, couples are likely to use an unconscious “turn-off ” Both men and mechanism where either partner perceptually women indulge downgrades individuin protective als, who can act as posbias, called sible threats to their “perceptual relationships, as less downgrading” attractive than they really are. Couples who are relationship and highly satisfied with their even more so if current partners are more likely they’re happy with their to use this mechanism. partner,” said lead author Shana “Committed individuals see Cole, Assistant Professor at Rutother potential partners as less gers University in the US. Both men and women indulge attractive than other people see them, especially if they see the in this protective bias, called “perattractive person as a threat to their ceptual downgrading”, and which

helps couples’ maintain their commitment to their current partners. “When people encounter an enticing temptation, one way to reduce its motivational pull is to devalue the temptation,” Cole added in the paper published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

“This study suggests that there are processes that may occur outside of conscious awareness to make it easier to stay committed to one’s partner,” she noted. For the study, the team designed two studies. In the first study, the researchers told participants that they would be working with a very attractive person - who is either romantically unavailable or single. They were shown the imaginary person’s face with its 10 morphed images and asked to pick the image that matched the original. The results shows that they consistently picked images morphed toward unattractiveness. In the second study, the participants provided more information about their own romantic situations and the team described the imaginary person as single, and therefore, available. Participants in relationships who thought the person was interested in dating found that person less attractive than individuals who were single.

Dry them well: Do not put the bag away as soon as you come from outside. Keep the bag under the ceiling fan for a few hours to air them out. No heat: Direct sunlight, extreme temperatures can all adversely affect your leather pieces. Never leave your bag to dry near a heater or in direct sunlight! Polish them well: Never compromise with the quality of the leather polish as it not only safeguards the bag from moisture, but also restores the balance of natural oils. Moreover, it also enhances the leather’s natural shine and extends the life of the bag. Store them right: Before storing the bag for next use, stuff it with newspaper to retain its shape and prevent it from folding or creasing.

Loneliness can affect your wisdom IANS, TORONTO

F Dietary copper could help you burn fat naturally NEW YORK: Further burnishing copper’s reputation as an essential nutrient for human health, researchers have found the metal plays a key role in metabolizing fat. “We find that copper is essential for breaking down fat cells so that they can be used for energy,” said lead researcher Chris Chang from University of California — Berkeley. “It acts as a regulator. The more copper there is, the more the fat is broken down,” Chang noted. The nutrient is plentiful in foods such as oysters and other shellfish, leafy greens, mushrooms, seeds, nuts and beans. “We think it would be worthwhile to study whether a

deficiency in this nutrient could be linked to obesity and obesity-related diseases,” Chang said. “Copper is not something the body can make, so we need to get it through our diet,” he pointed out. But the researchers caution against ingesting copper supplements as a result of these study results. Too much copper can lead to imbalances with other essential minerals, including zinc. An adult’s estimated average dietary requirement for copper is 700 micrograms per day, according to Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, National Academies of Sciences in the US.

actors such as whether you are alone or with friends can affect how wisely you reason, says a study that suggests that our level of wisdom varies depending on the situation. The study defines wise reasoning as a combination of such abilities as intellectual humility, consideration of others’ perspective and looking for compromise. “This research does not dismiss that there is a personality component to wisdom, but that’s not the whole picture,” said lead author of the study Igor Grossmann, Professor at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “Situations in daily life affect our personality and ability to reason wisely,” Grossmann said. The observation that wise reasoning varies dramatically across situations in daily life suggests that while it fluctuates, wisdom may not be as rare as we think. Further, for different individuals, only certain situations may promote this quality. “There are many examples where people known for their critical acumen or expertise in ethics

seem to fall prey to lack of such acumen or morals. The present findings suggest that those examples are not an anomaly,” Grossmann said. The study was published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. “We cannot always be at the top of our game in terms of wisdomrelated tendencies, and it can be dangerous to generalize based on whether people show wisdom in their personal life or when teaching

others in the classroom,” Grossmann noted. By examining conditions and situations under which people may or may not show wisdom in their lives, researchers and practitioners may learn more about situations promoting wisdom in daily life and recreating those situations. For the next stage of this work, Grossmann and his team are preparing a tool to assess wisdom according to the situation.
