also saw huge gatherings. Police made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the Eid prayers by imposing traffic restrictions. Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy, who supervised the arrangements, said over 10,000 personnel were deployed in the city for the peaceful and smooth conduct of prayers. A festive mood prevailed in Muslim neighbourhoods as people greeted each other. Eid was celebrated with religious fervour in nine other districts of Telangana. Major congregations were seen in the towns of Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Adilabad, Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar. Eid was also celebrated with gaiety in Andhra Pradesh. Muslims offered Eid prayers in Kadapa, Kurnool, Anantapur, Nellore, Vijayawada, Guntur and other towns in the state. After the month-long fasting during Ramadan, Muslims began the celebrations with prayers and greeted each other and people from other communities.

Thursday. Lakhs of Muslims offered Eid prayers at Eidgahs or open grounds and mosques in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad and in other towns of Telangana and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Attired in their best and wearing skull caps, men and children thronged Eidgahs and mosques since morning for the ‘Namaz-eEid’, marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramadan. The streets in the Muslimmajority old city of Hyderabad were abuzz with activity since early morning as people headed for ‘namaz’ reciting ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is great). As in the past, separate arrangements were made for women at a few places to enable them to offer prayers. The ‘imams’ or priests in their sermons exhorted Muslims to continue the good deeds even after

Ramadan for success in this life and Hereafter. They also exhorted Muslims to introspect and lead their lives in accordance with the Koran and Sunnah, the holy life of Prophet Mohammed. They underlined the need to have empathy towards the poor. The imams, in their sermons, condemned the terror attack near the holy mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia. They made ‘dua’ (supplica-

text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa said: “As you are aware, Palar is an interstate river and this unilateral action of the authorities in Andhra Pradesh has caused great alarm and apprehension in Tamil Nadu.” She said the Andhra Pradesh government’s irrigation department is increasing the height of the check dam from the current five feet to 12 feet across Palar river in Chittoor, but as Palar is an inter-state river, the upstream state should not, without the prior consent of the downstream state build any any structure obstructing/diverting/storing of the river water. Jayalalithaa also said the Tamil Nadu government has filed a suit in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing any structure/works across the Palar or at any other place through which the river and its tributaries flow.

Centre approves port in Tamil Nadu IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Union Cabinet on July 4 gave its ‘in-principle’ approval to set up a major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu. The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As per the decision, a special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be formed for developing the new port. The initial equity contribution will be from three major port trusts in Tamil Nadu — V.O. Chidambaram Port Trust, Chennai Port Trust and Kamarajar Port Ltd. The SPV will develop the port infrastructure, including dredging and reclamation, construction of breakwater and ensuring connectivity links etc. According to the central government, there are only a few ports in India that have sufficient draft and can match global cargo handling efficiencies. Currently, all of India’s transshipment traffic gets handled in Colombo, Singapore and other international ports. The Indian

PERUMBAVOOR (KERALA): Ameerul Islam, a migrant worker from Assam and the main accused in the Jisha murder case, has been sent to judicial custody till July 13 by a court here. His police custody ended on Thursday. According to the prosecution lawyer, Kerala Police’s request for his remand was accepted by the court that sent Islam to the Ernakulam district jail. “Islam’s lawyer presented a petition saying that he should be permitted to speak with
his client in the jail. The court will pronounce its order on this on Friday,” the prosecution lawyer said. Islam was presented before the court on July 7 without his face being covered. However, police requested the media not to publish his photograph. Jisha, a Dalit law student, was found dead in her house by her mother Rajeshwari on April 28. The young woman was raped and then murdered allegedly by Islam, who had earlier worked in the house.

port industry loses up to Rs 1,500 crore in revenue each year as a result. Establishing this major port at Enayam will not only act as a major gateway container port for Indian cargo that is presently transshipped outside the country, but also become a trans-shipment hub for the global East-West trade route, the government said. Enayam will also reduce the logistics cost for exporters and
importers in South India who currently depend on trans-shipment in Colombo or other ports, thus incurring additional port handling charges. In an interaction with IANS earlier, Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said the proposed port will provide direct employment to 10,000 people and change the economic face of the region.

I
n a major ministerial shake up two years since he took over, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 6 inducted 19 new faces, elevated Minister of State Prakash Javadekar to cabinet rank and sent him to replace Smriti Irani in the Human Resource Development Ministry, while also making changes in key portfolios like law, communications and parliamentary affairs. He also dropped five junior ministers. Hours after the ceremonial swearing-in of new ministers including Javadekar and allies Apna Dal’s leader Anupriya Patel and Republican Party of India-A’s Ramdas Athawale by President Pranab Mukherjee, the Prime Minister allotted the portfolios. In the exercise, Modi sprang a major surprise and replaced highprofile and vocal Irani, who has been at the eye of storm with former Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who is credited for being industry friendly.
In another key move he removed lacklustre D.V. Sadananda Gowda of Karnataka as Law Minister and gave the responsibility to Ravi Shankar Prasad. Gowda has been moved to the ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. As expected, Modi left four major portfolios of Home (Rajnath Singh), Sushma Swaraj (External Affairs), Arun Jaitley (Finance) and Manohar Parrikar (Defense) untouched while senior ministers Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport, Highways and Shipping) and Suresh Prabhu (Railways) have retained their earlier assignments. Prasad was divested of Communications and allotted Law while Parliamentary Affairs has been taken away from M. Venkaiah Naidu. Naidu, however, has been given additional charge of the I&B Ministry (held currently by Jaitley) apart from his existing Urban Development and Housing portfolio, said an official source. Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister H.N. Ananth Kumar will be the new Parliamentary Affairs
Modi drops five from ministerial team NEW DELHI: Five ministers were on July 5 dropped from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s council of ministers ahead of the swearing-in of 19 new faces. Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra, who were rumoured likely to lose their jobs, were spared. “The President, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of the following members of the Union council of Ministers with immediate effect,” an official communique said. The five dropped Ministers of State are: Sanwar Lal Jat (Water Resources), Nihalchand (Panchayati
Raj), Ram Shankar Katheria (HRD), Mansukh Bhai Vasava (Tribal Affairs), and Mohanbhai Kundaria (Agriculture). Of the five, at least two — Ram Shankar Katheria and Mohanbhai Kundaria — seemed to have reconciled to their fate. Katheria told IANS that perhaps the changes in the ministry were necessitated and the party will enlist his services for organisational assignments, mainly in view of the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat’s Rajkot MP Mohanbhai Kundaria, who was Minister of State for Agriculture, said that he accepted the party’s decision.
Minister also. Irani has been made Textiles Minister, replacing Santosh Gangwar who will be now be Minister of State for Finance. Former bureaucrat Arjun Meghwal, who was inducted in Tuesday’s expansion, has also been made Minister of
State in this crucial ministry. Among other cabinet changes, Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh from Haryana now would swap portfolios with Steel and Mines Minister Narendra Singh Tomar of Madhya
Pradesh, who will also hold charge of Panchayati Raj. According to sources, newlyinducted Anil Madhav Dave will be the new Minister of State for Environment replacing Javadekar. Vijay Goel, also inducted on July 5, will be the new Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Sports and Youth Affairs. M.J. Akbar has been appointed Minister of State for External Affairs. Jayant Sinha, who was junior minister in the finance ministry, now becomes Minister of State for Civil Aviation. Manoj Sinha will now hold the Communications portfolio too as Minister of State (Independent Charge) besides being MoS Railways. Among other changes, Mahesh Sharma, who was earlier Minister of State for Civil Aviation, has been left with his independent charge of Culture & Tourism. S.S. Ahluwalia will be the new Minister of State for Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs, sources said adding MoS Agriculture Sanjeev Balyan has been moved as junior minister for Water Resources.

‘India’s growth doubtful’ US State Department says India must pursue reforms to match the rhetoric even as key bills struggle to get past parliament IANS, WASHINGTON
D
oubting India’s claim of a 7.5 percent growth, the economic diplomacy arm of the US State Department has said that the Indian government must pursue reforms to match the rhetoric even as key bills struggle to get past parliament. “Ostensibly, India is one of the fastest growing countries in the world but the depressed investor sentiment suggests the approximately 7.5 percent growth rate may be overstated,” said the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs in its latest report. The comprehensive report took note of a range of initiatives that have been taken by the Narendra Modi government since May 2014, notably in opening up the economy to enhance Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI), the “Make in India” initiative and removal of bureaucratic hurdles. “However, the government has been slow to propose other economic reforms that would match its rhetoric, and many of the reforms it did propose have struggled to pass through parliament,” it added in the
India-related section of the report “Investment Climate Statements for 2016”. Giving examples, the report said the government failed to muster political support on the land acquisition bill in Parliament, all but ending its chance of passage in the near term, and still awaits the Opposi-
tion’s nod in passing the Goods and Services Tax Bill (GST Bill). It also had a piece of advise for those dealing with India. “India’s political system is highly decentralised. Investors must be prepared to face varied political and economic conditions across India’s states and union territories, including differences in the quality of governance, regulation, taxation, labour relations and education levels.” The report said this situation has resulted in many investors backing off somewhat from their once forward-leaning support of the BJP-led government. “Prime Minister Modi’s courtship of multinationals to invest and ‘Make in India’ has not yet addressed long-standing hesitations over India’s lack of effective IPR enforcement,” the US Foreign Ministry report said.
AG not to charge Clinton in email case IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Attorney General Loretta Lynch confirmed on July 6 that the Department of Justice will not file charges against presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the case concerning her e-mails. In a statement, Lynch said that after meeting on Wednesday with FBI Director James Comey and other agents involved in the investigation - “I received and accepted their unanimous recommendation
that the thorough, year-long investigation be closed and that no charges be brought against any individuals within the scope of the investigation.” Thus, Lynch brought to an end the judicial aspect of the controversy surrounding Clinton’s use of a private e-mail server to handle national security matters during her 20092013 tenure as secretary of state, EFE news reported. Lynch’s announcement was expected, since she had earlier said that she would accept the Federal

Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) recommendation in the matter. The Attorney General wound up in the eye of the hurricane last week after she held a controversial meeting with former President Bill Clinton during the investigation’s final phase. She said their conversation at
the Phoenix airport focused on the Clintons’ grandchildren and that at no time did the e-mail issue arise. She said she decided to explain her role in the case and emphasised that she would only review the final report without using her authority to shelve the investigation.
BRIEFS: Putin writes I-Day message to Obama WASHINGTON: Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message to his US counterpart Barack Obama in honor of the American Independence Day on July 4, the Kremlin said on July 4. In the message, Putin signaled he wanted the US and Russia to resume a positive relationship, CNN reported. “The history of Russian-American relations shows that when we act as equal partners and respect each other’s lawful interests, we are able to successfully resolve the most complex international issues for the benefit of both countries’ peoples and all of humanity,” Putin wrote. The Kremlin said Putin suggested past work between the two countries would “help to set the dialogue between Russia and the US back on a constructive track” to address global concerns.

S President Barack Obama announced on July 6 that he will maintain about 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan into 2017 through the end of his administration, slowing the planned drawdown of the US military presence in the country. Obama said the security situation in Afghanistan remains “precarious” and the country’s security forces are still “not as strong as they need to be”. His original plan was to draw down US troops in Afghanistan to 5,500 by the end of this year, Xinhua news agency reported.

I would only say that ‘Kuchh to log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna’ (People will talk, it is their business).” Passing the GST Bill in Parliament will be the government’s priority, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said after taking charge of his office. “We hope the GST will be passed in the coming monsoon session. Our focus will be to expedite the process of growth,” he told journalists. Birender Singh, who moved from Rural Development to Steel, skirted a direct reply on his change of portfolio. “I wish my colleague good wishes and hope the good works we started would be carried forward,” Singh said.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called a two-day state mourning for the victims, who included nine Italians, seven Japanese, three Bangladeshis and an Indian teenager, at the Holey Artisan café in the diplomatic area of Gulshan in Dhaka. One of the gunmen, injured in the shootout, was captured, while 13 hostages were rescued at the end of the 12-hour siege. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have condemned the attack. Modi called up Sheikh Hasina and condemned the “despicable attack” and said that India “stands

While many flooded social media with rich tributes to the 20-year-old, Bangladeshi daily Dhaka Tribune called him an icon to all Bangladeshis as “his bravery and selflessness is an inspiration for generations to come”. “As the nation wonders with horror how it could have given birth to the killers, who represent the very worst of humanity, and what it says about a society that did so, we can take comfort in the fact that Bangladesh also produced a young man like Faraaz,” the daily observed in its editorial titled

raq began a three-day national mourning on July 4 for victims of the July 3 car bombing attacks in Baghdad as the toll rose to 180. The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in central Baghdad shopping area of Karrada, which also left over 230 people injured, Efe news reported. In a statement on social networks, the IS said the attack had targeted “a group of renegades”, referring to Shia Muslims. According to an Iraqi interior ministry spokesperson, the toll could rise as many injured are in a critical condition. The Karrada-Dakhil bombing was the bloodiest attack this year in Iraq, where the army is fighting Islamic State militants. The busy commercial district in southern Baghdad was hit by the car bomb around 1.00 a.m. when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive-laden pickup truck outside a shopping centre. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced three days of national mourning for the victims after he visited the blast site on Sunday. His convoy was attacked by dozens of angry residents who
accused the government of failing to protect its people. Local resident Mohammed Musa said: “Now we demand a solution from the government because since 2003 to 2016 we have been uncomfortable, we are in a difficult situation.” “And those people, all of them lost their money, property and lives and other things. Everything is gone.”
BRASILIA: Brazil’s suspended President Dilma Rousseff failed to attend her defence hearing in front of the Senate’s impeachment commission.Rousseff was expected to appear to speak in her own defence on July 6 but instead sent a written response presented by Jose Eduardo Cardozo, her lawyer and former Justice Minister, Xinhua news agency reported. The President had announced her decision on social media July 5, saying that she would “consider the possibility of appearing in front of the Senate, but at another time”. In a statement read out by Cardozo, Rousseff stated that the impeachment attempt against her was purely politically motivated. She repeated her defence argument that the fiscal manoeuvre, for which she is being investigated, had no impact on the government’s fiscal budget.

n order to improve the skill sets of Indian workers going abroad for employment, especially to Gulf countries, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship on July 2 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) here for implementation of the Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY). “PKVY is a skill development initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs in partnership with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and is aimed at training and certification of Indian workforce keen on overseas employ-

“The scheme will be implemented by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) through its training partners in consultation with the Ministry of External
Affairs and Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship,” it stated. The MoU is significant in view of the emphasis being laid by the government to improving the skills of Indian workers going abroad, especially in search of blue collar jobs in the Gulf. Around 7-8 lakh Indian workers go abroad every year for employment. Just last month, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Qatar, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship signed an MoU with the Gulf nation’s National Qualifications Authority/Supreme Education Council in skill development and recognition of qualifications.

The ‘imams’ or priests in their sermons exhorted Muslims to continue the good deeds even after

text of which was released to the media here, Jayalalithaa said: “As you are aware, Palar is an interstate river and this unilateral action of the authorities in Andhra Pradesh has caused great alarm and apprehension in Tamil Nadu.” She said the Andhra Pradesh government’s irrigation department is increasing the height of the check dam from the current five feet to 12 feet across Palar river in Chittoor, but as Palar is an inter-state river, the upstream state should not, without the prior consent of the downstream state build any any structure obstructing/diverting/storing of the river water. Jayalalithaa also said the Tamil Nadu government has filed a suit in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain Andhra Pradesh from constructing any structure/works across the Palar or at any other place through which the river and its tributaries flow.

However, police requested the media not to publish his photograph. Jisha, a Dalit law student, was found dead in her house by her mother Rajeshwari on April 28. The young woman was raped and then murdered allegedly by Islam, who had earlier worked in the house.
he Union Cabinet on July 4 gave its ‘in-principle’ approval to set up a major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu. The Indian
port industry loses up to Rs 1,500 crore in revenue each year as a result.

SC admits plea against Khan Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Salman Khan, told the Supreme Court that the actor would like it to hear the plea on its merits IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he Supreme Court on July 5 admitted a plea by the Maharashtra government challenging the acquittal of Bollywood actor Salman Khan in a 2002 hit-andrun case, but declined to fast-track the hearing of the matter. A bench of Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice Arun Mishra admitted the plea by the Maharashtra government after senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for the actor, told the court that Khan would like it to hear the plea on merits. In the last hearing of the matter, the court had asked the actor whether he would consent to the hearing of the matter on merits. Sibal told the bench that he spoke to Khan and he wants the “matter
BRIEFS Surbhi Chandna ditched Bollywood MUMBAI: Actress Surbhi Chandna opted to feature in a TV show rather than a Bollywood movie. She feels “TV has a bigger reach than films”. The actress, who was seen in “Bobby Jasoos”, says she “would rather be famous on TV and be recognised for my work than start afresh in Bollywood”. Surbhi, who is seen as Annika in the Star Plus show “Ishqbaaaz”, refrains from naming the films that were offered to her. She said: “I had offers from Bollywood specifically to star in various movies”. “TV is the next big thing. It has a bigger reach than films because of which I chose to continue my stint on television and not venture into films,” Surbhi said in a statement.

The apex court had on February 19, 2016 issued notice to Khan on the Maharashtra government’s petition challenging the December 2015 Bombay High Court verdict. Khan was found guilty by a sessions court on May 6, 2015 and convicted for, among others, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and sentenced to five years in jail for the accident, in which one person was killed and four others injured. Khan had in an affidavit filed on March 17 told the Supreme Court that he was not driving his Toyota Land Cruiser when it killed a man in Mumbai in 2002 but the police was trying to implicate him in the case.

Eid on Thursday may affect ‘Sultan’ IANS, MUMBAI
S
uperstar Salman Khan’s much-awaited “Sultan” which was targeting to get a wide opening on July 6 on the occasion of Eid will perhaps have to face a huge dip on its opening day as the festival will now be celebrated on July 7. “The opening of ‘Sultan’ will certainly get affected. Salman’s film usually collects maximum on its first three days... now that Eid has moved to Thursday, it is going to
affect the business,” Manoj Desai, Executive Director of Gaiety Galaxy and Maratha Mandir Cinema told IANS. “Advance booking has already been done and now I don’t know what’s going to be the turnout,” he added. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, “Sultan” will see Salman Khan in the role of a wrestler. The film, produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner, is slated to release on July 6. Distributor Rajesh Thadani says: “We were expecting close to Rs 40
crore on its opening day but now I feel the opening would come down to Rs 30 crore. Now, I think ‘Sultan’ won’t get a record breaking opening which we were hoping for the film. The advance booking has been tremendous though.” Distributor Sanjay Ghai from
Delhi said: “Yes, the opening will get affected slightly but, they should have released the film on Friday itself and since its Salman’s film they would have made a great collection any which way. Releasing it on Wednesday was not a great idea.”
‘Shorgul’: More noise than substance Film: “Shorgul”; Directors: Jitendra Tiwari and Pranav Kumar Singh; Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Ashutosh Rana, Hrishitaa Bhatt, Sanjay Suri, Narendra Jha, Hiten Tejwani and Suha Gezen; Rating: **
S
teeped in controversy, even before its release, “Shorgul” is a film which arouses curiosity. Equally intriguing is the opening sequence, but that’s where it all ends. The film gradually degenerates into a medley of politicians with an agenda, communal strife, intolerance, a tragic love story
along with some songs. And that too amidst a lot of confusion and noise, befitting its title. Set in Malliyabad, Central UP, the narration takes its time to
establish a love triangle with Saleem (Hiten Tejwani), Zainab (Suha Gezen) and Raghu (Anirudh Dave), which serves as the backdrop for the power-hungry politi-
cians to fuel a riot and give vent to their personal avarice. Ranjit Om (Jimmy Sheirgill) addressed as “Bhaiyyaji”, is a rightwing politician. He is an opportunist, eyeing the MLA’s coveted seat, inciting hatred with his speeches and on the other end of the spectrum is the Maulana along with Alam Khan (Narendra Jha) a minister, who equally spews hatred and intolerance. Chaudhry (Ashustosh Rana) is a well-respected veteran who is Ranjit Om’s uncle and Raghu’s father and there is the state chief minister, Mithilesh (Sanjay Suri). The songs are situational, dwelling upon on the emotions of the moment. — Troy Ribeiro

It has been reported that, Anushka, who is currently waiting for the release of her forthcoming film “Sultan”, had taken some time out from her busy schedule to meet Indian cricketer Virat Kohli in Bengaluru. On the work front, Anushka will also be seen in her home production “Phillauri” and Karan Johar production “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”.

Guide for a perfect monsoon wedding sunshades have become common giveaways. v Your guests would need to wrap up their phones and belongings while in the rain, so arrange for plastic or rather personalised waterproof bags. v Rain proofing is an absolute necessity if you are not planning your wedding in a banquet. But a banquet should definitely be the first choice.

D
o you dream of having a monsoon wedding -- but are scared of rain playing spoilsport? Just prepare a back-up plan in advance to welcome the showers, says an expert. Surruchi Joshhi, Founder and Director at wedding planning company Raas Luxury Weddings, shares a list of dos and don’ts for a monsoon wedding.
Dos— v Plan a rain dance party as part of your pre-wedding event. v Seating becomes difficult to arrange in the rain, bean bag seating setup is perfect especially among youngsters. v Beautification should be done using neons, flowery drapes and ribbon décor. They will suit the ambience. v When it is monsoon, don’t shy away from having a monsoonbased theme in your stationery. Starting from your invitation cards
to the giveaways, monsoon is the key to design. v Rains create a need for you to wear fresh coloured lehengas. Peach,
subtle gold, rose pink, tomato red are the colours of the season. v How good is an umbrella as a giveaway to your guests? Bangles,
Don’ts— v Your make-up should not be based on a heavy foundation. It won’t just keep up. v Decorations based on warm colours are a big no-no! v Don’t have flower-based decorations, prefer parachute material gazebo, floral prints in the drape and artificial flowers. v Heels don’t go well with rains. Juttis/floral mojaris are what’s in vogue. v For your mehendi, don’t go for heavy real flower jewellery, instead prefer tiaras, or gotta jewellery.

Sikh musician racially profiled at restaurant BY A STAFF WRITER OUSTON -- A Sikh American musician has claimed that he was racially profiled while having lunch at a restaurant in Orlando, Florida, when a ‘concerned citizen’ called the police to look into his ‘suspicious container’ that actually contained his bamboo flutes. Neelamjit Dhillon was having a late lunch at a local restaurant with a friend when the police responded to a call about a suspicious container at the restaurant. “A concerned citizen called the police to investigate me while having lunch because of my suspicious container. Just my bamboo flutes,” Dhillon wrote in an Instagram post about the June 28 incident. Dhillon moved to the Orlando area from Los Angeles to work as a performer and an Indian music director on Disney’s Animal Kingdom show, “Jungle Book Alive.”
H
Neelamjit Dhillon
While outside on a phone call, Dhillon says a smiling and an apologetic police officer approached him. “A police officer was walking towards me, put out his hand
and shook my hand, and right away he said, ‘I need to have chat with you. Can we have a discreet conversation back at your table?’’ said Dhillon. Confused, Dhillon complied. Back at the table, the officer explained that someone unaffiliated with the restaurant had called the police to report a suspicious man carrying a “suspicious container.” And it turned out, the suspicious container he was a carrying was actually a case for his bamboo flutes--one of the many instruments Dhillon plays professionally. Dhillon, who carries his flutes in a case designed to hold blueprints, showed the flutes to the officer, who apologized for the trouble and left. Dhillon said it wasn’t the first time a member of his community has been judged or profiled as a possible Muslim terrorist based on his experience as a Sikh.
Indian family’s horse is shot in Tennessee BY A STAFF WRITER ASHVILLE, TN – The Nashville police are investigating the shooting death of an Indian American family’s horse as a possible hate crime. Misty Blue was a Tennessee walking horse born on the family farm of Devinder Sandhu in 1999. His son named her Misty Blue because the morning of her birth was misty, giving the hills a bluish tint. The farm was her domain where “she was the princess,’’ Sandhu said. Farm workers found her the morning when they were bringing grain to the

animals. Misty Blue’s body was near a private, dead-end gravel road. She had been shot in the right temple.
Sandhu has lived in Nashville for more than 40 years, but his family is originally from India. He wears a turban and beard as an expression of his Sikh faith. He said he was often mistaken for a Muslim. When he is working in the field as an environmental engineer, people yell at him from out of cars when they are driving by. The family has raised $10,000 to offer as a reward for anyone who can help the police find the person who killed Misty Blue. Police spokeswoman Kris Mumford said that the specialized investigations division, which investigates hate crimes, was on the job.

Call centers in India blamed for frauds
BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY-- Plenty of fraud is emanating from call centers in India, US government officials testified before Congress. Lois C. Greisman, associate director, Division of Marketing Practices, Bureau of Consumer Protection at the US Federal Trade Commission, was testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 29. She said certain types of scams were more likely to impact older Americans, such as prize promotion and lottery schemes and imposter schemes purporting to provide technical support to “fix” non-existent computer problems. Listing the various areas of concerns, Greisman listed fraud calls originating from India as one of them. “Another area of international concern involves Indian call centers, which like their Jamaican counterparts, continue to be the source of various imposter frauds that have reached consumers throughout the Englishspeaking world,” she said.

BY A STAFF WRITER ALITINE,IL -- In remembrance of the 49 victims and 53 injured, in one of the worst recent mass shootings in American history, at the Pulse Night Club in Orlando Florida, on June 12, the Sikh Religious Society in Palatine, Illinois organized a prayer service and candlelight vigil. Over 200 attendees gathered, comprising members of the local Sikh community, neighbors, and interfaith groups. Eight speakers, representing the Sikh, LGBTQ, Muslim, mental health care, and gun violence prevention Said Marcus Hamilton, who works with a local nonprofit: ““It was an attack on Muslims, it was an attack on Sikhs, it was an attack on Christians. It was an attack on people of good will everywhere.” The Sikh community has fresh memories of deadly hate and violence. In 2012, a man with connections to white supremacists, shot and killed six worshippers at a Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, which several speakers referred to during the evening. Parminder Singh Mann, wanting to bring ownership and action beyond the vigils, asked the gathering, “Are we authentic in feeling the pain? Can we make it our own? Is it another community’s [pain]?” He emphasized the Sikh teaching begins with the numeral one, to signify the inherent unity of not just mankind, but all there is. After the candlelight vigil, which included a reading of the names of the 49 victims by Jasvir Kaur and Jagjinder Singh, everyone sat down on the ground as a sign of support to lawmakers in Washington DC, who staged a sit-in on the House floor on the same day (June 22). All the participants of the event were invited to share ‘langar’, the community kitchen vegetarian meal. The event was coordinated by Rajinder

Toxic plant spreads across Illinois BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Illinois residents are being warned of a poisonous plant growing throughout the state that causes painful blisters and a rash similar to severe burns when touched. Wild parsnip is spreading across parts of the Midwest, according to health officials, including Iowa and Illinois. From the outside, the wild parsnip–also known as Pastinaca sativa–has lacy, yellowgreen heads similar to wildflowers and can

look harmless. But the plant secretes an oily sap containing psoralen that causes a severe reaction when it comes in contact with the skin and then is exposed to sunlight, the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) reports. The colorful plant typically flowers from May to July, according IDNR officials, and can grow from 6 inches to 6 feet tall. It is often found in roadside ditches, fields and along bike paths. Those who come across the plant are urged to avoid using a lawn string trimmer to remove it, as breaking the parsnip tissue will pray a high exposure of the toxin. If found, gloves should be worn for removal.

Juvenile parenticide cleared of charges BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- Omar Golamrabbi, a juvenile charged with killing his parents in their San Jose, Calif., home, has been cleared of murder on June 24 and released from police custody. Golamrabbi, 17, and his brother, Hasib Golamrabbi, 22, were charged with murdering their father, Golam Rabbi, 59 at the time of his death; and their mother Shamima Begum Rabbi, in the Evergreen neighborhood of San Jose. The Bangladeshi American couple was found dead on April 24 by relatives who had been trying to reach them for several days. The duo vanished after the killings. According to public defender Sajid Khan, who represented Omar Golamrabbi, Omar had been released because prosecutors said they had an “insufficiency of evidence” of his involvement in the murders. “He was present at the time, but we believe he was just a witness to the scene,” said Khan. Omar Golamrabbi, who, following the death of both his parents became a ward of the state, was released on June 24 and taken to a group home, according to Khan.

head of the Indian cricket team’s departure for the West Indies for the fourmatch Test series, head coach Anil Kumble on Monday admired skipper Virat Kohli’s onfield aggression but at the same time reminded the players of a “thin line” which needs to be respected. “I love his (Kohli’s) aggression. I was also no different as I was very aggressive. But we were probably very different in terms of how we came across in the field. But you don’t want to curb aggression. I will be the last person to curb someone’s natural instincts,” Kumble said at the pre-departure presser here. However, the legendary leg-spinner also cautioned them against crossing the line, being “ambas-

Reading out the judgement, Judge Thokozile Masipa said the trial of murder-convicted Pistorius had many mitigating factors.
Raonic to meet Federer in Wimbledon semis LONDON: Canadian tennis player Milos Raonic will be playing the Wimbledon semi-finals against Swiss maestro Roger Federer after both won their respective quarter-final matches here on Wednesday. games leading to the first Test. “We have a couple of practice games where all the players will get a chance to have a knock and then we will decide on what’s going to be the combination for the first Test,” he said. “Only a few of them have played
there in Tests, the others have played in the shorter formats. So instead of looking at the opposition, we will look at ourselves on ways to improve.” Kumble, India’s highest wicket-taker with 619 scalps, wants his side to focus on consistency and winning in the longer version. “As a coach, you want the team to win and prepare them to the best of their ability. To ensure that all areas are covered, skill-wise as well as strategy-wise, so that they are able to assess any situation and find a solution on their own. “Good part is that we are playing a lot of Test cricket and we will be able to assess the shortcomings if any and try to plug that. We will be playing 17 Tests, starting with West Indies and then New Zealand, England and Australia at home,” he said.
ristiano Ronaldo scored one and assisted another to lead Portugal to a 2-0 win over Wales in the semifinals of the European Championship here on Wednesday. Portugal, losing their only previous final to Greece in 2004, will fight for the title against the winner of the other match between hosts France and world champions Germany, which will be held in Marseille on Thursday, Xinhua news agency reported. After a dull first half in which neither side created clear-cut chances, Portugal pulled ahead in the 50th minute through Ronaldo’ s stunning header. The Real Madrid forward jumped high and hung in the air above Wales defender James Chester
to bullet a Raphael Guerreiro cross into the roof of the net. It was his ninth goal in four European Championships and helped him equal Michel Platini’s record. Wales, without suspended Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, were soon exposed at the back. In just three minutes Fernando Santos’ side doubled the lead. Ronaldo almost made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute, but his freekick from 30 meters dipped over the wall and flew over cross bar.
BARCELONA: A Spanish court on Wednesday sentenced FC Barcelona’s Argentine star Lionel Messi and his father to a prison term for tax fraud committed between 2007 and 2009. The Barcelona Provincial Court ruled that Messi and his father, Jorge Messi, had committed three counts of tax fraud that were punishable with 21 months (one year and 9 months) in prison, reports Efe. In Spanish law, it is not mandatory for a first offender to go to prison if the sentence is under two years. The court also fined Messi two million euros ($2.21 million) for evading income taxes in 2007, 2008 and 2009, while his father was fined 1.5 million euros ($1.66 million) for the same offence. During the trial, the public prose-
cutor only accused the five-time Ballon D’Or winner’s father, demanding 18 months in prison. The state attorney asked for 22 months and 15 days in prison for both father and son, accusing both of willfully evading 4.1 million euros.
