MIM makes decent debut in Maha polls
HYDERABAD: The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or MIM, which made an impressive debut in the Maharashtra elections, will now focus on Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and other states, said party president Asaduddin Owaisi. In its first attempt to expand outside Hyderabad and have pan-India presence, the Muslim political party stunned the rivals by making inroads in the western state. Scores of party activists celebrated the party’c victory at Darussalam, the party headquarters here. A stream of workers and supporters were seen congratulating MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and his younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi, who aggressively campaigned in Mumbai and parts of Marathwada. Party leaders feel it is a big achievement for the party considering the fact that it did not have any proper organizational structure in the state and majority of its candidates were political novices. They pointed out that the party also finished runners up in five or six constituency. — IANS

was manufacturing firecrackers for the coming Diwali festival, were completely gutted in the fire. Police were looking into complaints that three more workers went missing.
“Once we get it, we will discuss it and then seek legal opinion on how to go about it,” said Chennithala. A division bench of Justice A.V. Ramakrishna Pillai, acting on a petition of former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Narayanan, directed the state government to reconsider its decision to drop case against the three police officers and submit a report within three months. The case surfaced in 1994 when Narayanan along with another top official of ISRO, two Maldivian
women and a businessman was arrested on espionage charges. The case rocked the then K. Karunakaran government and deep factionalism in the party led to a rather unceremonious exit of Karunakaran in 1995. He was replaced by A.K. Antony. Then the Congress party was divided between the Antony faction, led by Oommen Chandy, and the Karunakaran faction. Chandy quit as finance minister in 1994 owing to difference of opinion with Karunakaran.

U
nited States President Barack Obama delivered a calming message to Americans on October 18 following the alarm sparked by the first two Ebola infections in the country, and said the nation is “prepared” to ward off an outbreak of the virus.” “There is no country better prepared to confront the challenge Ebola poses than the U.S. and even one case here at home is too many, the country is not facing an outbreak of the disease,” Obama said in his customary message. The president said that “this is a serious disease, but we canot give in to hysteria or fear” because “Ebola is actually a difficult disease to catch.” He also stood up for health authorities’ ability to respond and learn from the mistakes made at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas where two nurses were infected who had been caring for Liberian patient Thomas Eric Dun-

So far, five Americans who got infected with Ebola in West Africa have been brought back to the US and all five have been treated safely, without infecting health-

Meanwhile, an Ebola patient, who was treated at the Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, has been discharged, the hospital said.

he BJP created history in Haryana by getting a clear majority on its own for the first time this week and said that it would form the government in Maharashtra too where it finished the single largest group in a hung assembly but has been offered support by the NCP. The Congress was humiliated in both Haryana and Maharashtra which it had been ruling for two and three consecutive terms, respectively. For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party got a clear mandate in Haryana, winning 47 seats in the 90-member assembly with a 33.2 percent vote share. The BJP Parliamentary Party Board met in New Delhi Sunday evening to discuss chief minister probables for Haryana and Maharashtra. The party later announced it would send senior leaders Rajnath Singh to Maharashtra and Venkaiah Naidu to Haryana to take a decision on the chief ministerial candidates. Briefing reporters after the meeting, general secretary J.P. Nadda said he would accompany Rajnath Singh. On the offer of support from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, Nadda said no call has been taken yet. The names doing rounds in Haryana include Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh activist Manohar Lal Khattar, state BJP president Ram Bilas Sharma and party spokesperson Abhimanyu. Other names were of leaders, who did not contest, including union ministers Sushma Swaraj, Rao Inderjit Singh and Krishan Pal. Congressman-turned-BJP leader Birender Singh is also in the running. sworn in before Diwali this week. The Hindu festival of lights falls on October 23. In Maharashtra, the BJP won 122 seats in the 288-member assembly, falling well short of the 145 seats required for a simple majority. Its ally Rashtriya Samaj Paksha won one. With the NCP, which won 41 seats, offering BJP “outside sup-
port”, leaving the runner up and former ally Shiv Sena high and dry, BJP president Amit Shah said in New Delhi that his party would “form the next government” in the state. NCP leader Praful Patel said Maharashtra needed stability and so his party was ready to prop up a BJP government. The Shiv Sena, which ended up
with 63 seats, had earlier said it was ready to make up with the BJP, a sentiment shared by some of the latter’s leaders, including L.K. Advani, one of those who was not happy with the decision to dump its ally of 25 long years after a row over seat sharing ahead of elections. The Congress, which, with the NCP, ruled Maharashtra for 15 years until their alliance collapsed before the elections, finished third with 42 seats. Shiv Sena chief Udhav Thackeray said that nobody from the BJP has approached his party for support, and his party would not approach it with any proposal. “If (the BJP) they make any proposal, we shall consider it,” he said. Earlier, Maharashtra BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said that while no discussions had taken place with the Sena, “if the need arises, we expect our friends to support us”, while Sena leader Anil Desai added that the acrimony between the parties was history.
India ready for nuclear no-first-use agreements ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
R
eiterating its traditional policy of not using nuclear weapons first and not targeting non-nuclear weapons nations, India has offered to enter into agreements incorporating the two principles while ruling out joining the non-proliferation treaty. “As a responsible nuclear power, India has a policy of credible minimum deterrence based on a No First Use posture and non-use of
nuclear weapons against nonnuclear weapon states,” Ambassador D.B. Venkatesh Varma said. “We are prepared to convert these into bilateral or multilateral legally binding arrangements.” Varma, the Indian Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament, was speaking at a meeting of the UN General Assembly Committee on Disarmament and International Peace. While New Delhi is “unwavering in its commitment to universal, non-discriminatory, verifiable
nuclear disarmament”, he said, “there is no question of India joining the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) as a non-nuclear weapon state.” That would require New Delhi
unilaterally giving up its nuclear weapons. On another matter impacting the restriction of nuclear weapons, Varma offered New Delhi’s qualified support to the Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty

Mathur had contributed to the party’s efforts in the Maharashtra assembly polls where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party for the first time and is poised to form the government. Reintroducing a draft resolution on a Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Nuclear Weapons, he criticized countries with nuclear weapons coverage that have repeatedly voted against the proposed measure since it was first introduced in 1982. Varma expressed “regret that a sizeable minority of member states have voted against this resolution”. Reflecting the concern of the international community to the dangers from terrorists, Varma said India will be introducing again a draft resolution on “measures to prevent terrorists from acquiring weapons of mass destruction”.

O
ne of the most common and perhaps the cruelest sights during Diwali is a frightened dog running blindly on the road, terrified of the loud noise coming from the firecracker strip tied to his tail by mischievous children. This scene might provide entertainment to many children, who would giggle and clap at the helpless mute creature, but in reality the festival of lights is indeed a nightmare for all animals, includ-
ing dogs, birds and cats. “This happens every year. But if one looks closely at the core issue, we will realize that bursting crackers is just a part of the problem. People are not compassionate about animals and think they can do anything with them,” Animal Welfare Board of India secretary Vinos Kumar told IANS on the phone from Chennai. “We are not saying ‘Stop bursting crackers’, but what we are saying is to show a bit more compassion towards animals. Loud sounds affect their ear drums, so

or 22-year-old student Ridhima Shukla, taking pictures like a professional in the run-up to Diwali is pure fun — for she cannot resist capturing the colorful lanterns, diyas and lights that fill the air. Busy photographing sale-hopping shoppers and bustling markets across the capital, what she loves the most is her new DSLR — short for digital single lens reflex camera that she has just bought on a handsome discount. To go by retailers, with heavy dis-
counts on offer, DSLR cameras have been on top of the shoppers’ list for the past few years during Diwali in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). “Since the last few years, sales of DSLR have been exceedingly good. No doubt the discounts attract buyers as they are costly,” Irfan Ali, owner of Camarena store in Noida that offers a range of cameras, told IANS. “We also organize various competitions during Diwali to encourage people purchase DSLR and show
their photography skills. We also award cash prizes to the winner,” Ali added. Depending upon your budget, DSLR prices start from `24,000 and go up to above `100,000, with discounts ranging from 15 to 30
percent on offer. Companies like Canon and Nikon have not only come up with new DSLR models but have also slashed the prices of existing brands. “Any festival is an ideal time for taking photographs but when it is
the best would be to show some sensitivity towards them,” he added. Delhi-based animal activist Bhavani Sundaran has already started creating awareness among the people on “making Diwali safe for animals and pets” through her Facebook page. She is a member of the Animal Forum group on the social networking site that understand the plight of animals. “Unfortunately many people don’t understand animals at all. They feel they can’t speak and talk and hence have no emotions. But they too are living beings and can be scared and stressed during times like this,” Sundaran told IANS. “I have seen many children teasing animals, especially street dogs. They derive great pleasure in scaring a dog by tying crackers at its tail. I wonder what kind of entertainment they get from there,” she asked, adding that being a compassionate and sensitive human being is the key to solving many problems of the world, including those relating to animals. While there are no reliable figures of injuries animals sustain after Diwali, animal welfare associations and NGOs said they mostly get complaints from people for lost pets, injured birds and stray dogs.
Diwali, the mesmerizing world of crackers, diyas, lights, sweets, decorations and, most importantly, the emotions on the street put your skills to real test”, Tarun Chawla, a Delhi-based photographer who frequently organizes workshops across the country, told IANS. “Here, with loads of features, DSLR cameras come to your rescue. Digital SLR gives you a complete control,” he pointed out. For someone like Shukla, the DSLR camera has brought new life to her frames. “The functions are so smooth and user-friendly that capturing a moment with the right amount of light and correct shutter speed is no more a rocket science,” a beaming Shukla said. With social media and smartphones now abuzz with photo-sharing platforms and devices, people are thronging to upload quality pictures on sites like Facebook, Instagram and Flickr, among others.

Not only that, if a recipe is required from friends or family, that can be obtained through Skype chat. “The kitchen is the only place where there is no use for a smartphone and this smart induction cooktop is an attempt to make cooking an enjoyable experience,” Gaurav Bhutani, vice president, sales and marketing of E-durables, an electronics goods manufacturing company, told IANS. Launched this year on ecommerce websites, it can be purchased for `3,995 along with a free 4GB pen drive as a special Diwali offer. If you are planning to gift some-
one something different then give a lamp made out of recycled wine or beer bottles with a personalized message engraved on it. Started by a group of friends, Kavi — the Poetry Art Project has been creating many varieties of planters, lamps and key hangers from recycled wine and beer bottles. “Today, recycling is an extremely good tool that can help to protect and save the environment. Most corporate houses are also looking for recycled stuff rather than gifting fancy common items,” Kavi co-founder Madhuri Balodi told IANS.
This Diwali, people can also plan to move from traditional methods of gifting sweets by buying trendy hampers of cupcakes, macaroons and cookies instead of ‘ladoos’ and ‘kaju barfi’. “Gifting cupcakes and macaroons with a Diwali theme is emerging as a hit gifting option in homes with children. Corporate houses are also choosing these,” Vatsala Arora of Sweet Magique told IANS. Sweet Magique, a home-grown bakery in Gurgaon, started last year and now also supplies to big corporate houses.

D
espite stiff competition from attractively packed imported chocolates, fancy cookies, cakes, and muffins on every Diwali, branded traditional Indian sweets — a market estimated at `490 billion ($8 billion) — have not only managed to hold on to their own but have witnessed a steady rise in sales due to an expanding market, rising incomes and, most importantly, the emotional value associated with them, outlet owners say. Sweets like kaju katli (sweet cake made of cashew nut powder and sugar), patisa (sweet flaky cakes of gram flour), mysore pak
(sweet small cakes made from butter, sugar and gram flour), badam halwa (fried flour cooked with sugar syrup and ghee and topped with almonds) and gulab jamun (fried dough balls soaked in sugar syrup) are high on the preference list of Indians this festive season. The fact that these sweets have a long shelf life is the key point as during Diwali, sweets are often bought in bulk and then distributed among friends and families over a period of several days. “All types of barfis, especially kaju barfi along with patisa and gulab jamun, are selling in good numbers as they are premium sweets and also have a long shelf life of around 15 days,” Deepta Gupta, executive vice presi-
dent of sweets and savories maker Bikanerwala Foods, told IANS. Gupta acknowledged the rising market share of sweets like cookies, cakes, dougnuts, and the latest rage — macaroons — that are being sold by several upscale bakeries all over the city and have particularly caught the fancy of youngsters who may find the traditional Indian sweets boring. “But the market is expanding and there is space for everyone. Moreover, the branded sweets market has increased by around 30 percent this Diwali season as compared to last year,” Gupta noted.
Bipin Sareen of Mumbai-based Mithaivala.in too agreed that sales were headed north but unlike Bikanervala, which is a renowned brand, he has to walk the extra mile to ensure that the cash registers keep ringing. “Apart from the traditional branded sweets which remain a favorite all year round, especially during Diwali, we also deliver other sweet items like baklava (sweet pastry of filo filled with chopped nuts) and fruit katli,” Sareen who handles the operation and marketing of the two-year-old web portal, told IANS on the phone
from Mumbai. “We are always trying to rope in small vendors who can provide us with unique offerings to give us an extra edge but it’s a tough task to make consumers buy unbranded stuff,” said Sareen admitting that traditional sweets continued to drive the sales helping his site to register a whopping 200 percent rise in sales this season. Mithaivala.in offers different types of branded sweets, chocolates and other savories and delivers all over India.

Festival of Lights:
Spirits soar high
SOUTHERN DELIGHT
Unlike in north India, Diwali in south is celebrated in the evening IANS, NEW DELHI
I
n the South, Diwali festival often commemorates the conquering of the Asura Naraka, a powerful king of Assam, who imprisoned tens of thousands of inhabitants. It was Krishna who finally subdued Naraka and freed the prisoners. The festival in the south is celebrated in the Tamil month of aipasi (thula month) ‘naraka chaturdasi’ thithi, preceding amavasai. The preparations begin the day before, when the oven is cleaned, smeared with lime, four or five kumkum dots are applied, and then it is filled with water for the next day’s oil bath. The house is washed and decorated with kolam (rangoli) patterns with kavi (red oxide). In the puja room, betel leaves, betel nuts, plaintain fruits, flowers, sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder, scented powder are kept. Crackers and new dresses are placed in a plate after smearing a little kumkum or sandal paste. CELEBRATIONS Morning: Diwali celebrations begin early in the morning with the the eldest member in the family applying sesame oil on the heads of all the family members. Then the family goes out for bath, beginning with the youngest in the family. They emerge with new clothes and then burst crackers, which symbolizes the killing of the demon king Narakasur. Lehiyan: In between there is another ritual called Lehiyan, the bitter concoction, to cleanse the system of its festive over-eating!
Murukku: A puja is performed for the family deities in the morning, which is followed by breakfast consisting of murukku, a sweet dish and, of course, idli or dosa. Some communities believe that when Narakasur was to be killed, Lord Krishna asked him his last wish. Narakasura replied that he wanted to enjoy the last day of his life in a grand manner and hence the festival of lights. That was the beginning and the practice continued since. In the evening, lamps are lighted and crackers burst. As most of the cracker manufacturing units are in Tamil Nadu, there is no dearth of fireworks here. During Thalai Deepavali, the newly weds go to the bride’s parental home for revelry. Taking blessings from the elders, they burst the first crackers of the day. Usually a vast range of crackers are bought, with costs running into thousands of rupees. The Diwali celebrations include a visit to the temple, gifts of clothes and jewelry, gorging on sweets and receiving blessings of elders. The groom’s parents, brothers and sisters come down to join in the celebrations. DIWALI CELEBRATION IN KERALA Traditionally, Diwali celebrations in Kerala are on a low key as there aren’t too many merchant/business families here. The native people of Kerala do not celebrate Diwali. But places in Kerala where prominent Tamil, Bengali and various North Indian communities reside, Diwali is celebrated with great pomp and gaiety. People of these communities arrange grand feasts
In Tamil Nadu, Diwali is known as Naraka Chaturdasi and the month when it is celebrated is called Thula.
and gaily-dressed men, women and children go to temples and fairs, visit friends and relatives. DIWALI IN TAMIL NADU Diwali in the Tamil Nadu is celebrated in the month of aipasi (thula month) ‘naraka chaturdasi’ thithi, preceding amavasai. The preparations for the Diwali begin the day before, when the oven is cleaned, smeared with lime, four or five kumkum dots are applied, and then it is filled with water for the next day’s oil bath. The house is washed and decorated with kolam (rangoli) patterns with kavi (red oxide). For Diwali Festival, in the traditional pooja room, betel leaves, betel nuts, plaintain fruits, flowers, sandal paste, kumkum, gingelly oil, turmeric powder, scented powder is kept. Crackers and new dresses are placed in a plate after smearing a little kumkum or sandal paste. The festival begins with everyone in the family taking an oil bath before sunrise, a custom arising from a belief
that having an oil bath in the morning on the day of diwali is equivalent to taking bath in the Ganges. Before the bath, elders in the house apply gingelly oil on the heads of the younger members. For those hailing from Tanjore, the custom is to first take a small quantity of deepavali lehiyam (medicinal, ayurvedic paste) after the oil bath and then have breakfast. Often sweets are eaten after wearing new
clothes. In almost all houses, items like ukkarai, velli appam, idly, chutney, sambhar, omapudi, boondhi are prepared. For lunch, jangri, pathir peni, or one variety of the poli are made. Crackers are usually burst only after the bath. Meanwhile, kuthu vilaku (oil lamp) is lit in the pooja room. Mats or wooden planks are placed facing east. After naivedhya (offering to the Gods) of the items, a plaintain fruit is given to each member of the family followed by betel leaves and betel nuts. Those who have to perform pithru tharpanam will have a second bath perform the tharpanam and don’t eat rice at night.

‘Ask police on Ness issue’ Preity Zinta, who has filed a molestation case against her former boy friend Ness Wadia, declines to speak on the controversy with reporters IANS, MUMBAI
A
ctor-producer Preity Zinta, who filed a molestation case against her former boy friend Ness Wadia, on October 18 declined to speak on the issue, saying all queries should be addressed to the Mumbai police chief about the details. “I have come here for a different reason and I would appreciate if you ask the Mumbai police commissioner about this because even I want to ask him. I am specifically here for MAMI so let’s stick to this,” Preity Zinta told reporters at the 16th MAMI film festival. “I am a normal person though you all call me celebrity... I am a normal person like anybody else. Police are following their procedure and in our
country the law takes its own cause and I have to wait. There are millions in the line and I can’t jump the line directly or else you all will say I am behaving like a celebrity. So I am being a good girl and following the procedures,” said the actor. The actor, who was there to support the festival, says like in other festivals, the celebrities who attend the MAMI film festival should look glamorous. “I really want to see everyone looking glamorous at the MAMI film festival like other festivals. We all deck up and go for other festivals so why not for MAMI... I would really like if everyone looks glamorous because that’s what it’s all about. I am here to support MAMI and I am glad all the actors have come ahead and supported it.”
Deepika is not gunning for Hollywood now
Preity Zinta, who will be seen in Saif Ali Khan’s next film Happy Ending, says she was surprised to see herself in the trailer of the film. “I did it because Saif is a dear friend he called me and I just said yes for it. He has never asked me to anything like this before,” she said. Saying she was awed by Rani Mukherjee’s performance in Mardaani, Preity said says Rani is a powerhouse performer. “In the recent past, one film which I like the most was Mardaani. I have been researching about human trafficking for a while and the film gives you the correct information. Rani is a powerhouse performer and she does relevant films,” said the actor, who was last seen in Ishkq in Paris.

eepika Padukone is ready to work in films beyond Bollywood, but she is not gunning for Hollywood. The versatile Indian actor is instead, keen to do a French or Iranian film, and she has even identified directors she would like to work with. “I think French cinema is as beautiful as Indian cinema and like I said before, I don’t think the medium matters as much as the story and the script. If I find something exciting, I would do it,” the 28year-old said here at the 16th Mumbai Film Festival. “Priceless is one of my most favorite French films. I have watched some Iranian films as well. I do like some directors and I have identified some directors I would like to work with,” she added. Deepika is currently busy promoting her mega commercial venture Happy New Year that hits theatres on October 24.
ctor Abhishek Bachchan, who tasted success as a producer with the National Award winning film Paa, says he’s not a huge fan of producing movies. However, he’s okay with the job as long as he isn’t acting in the project as well. “I hate producing films. It’s just that I got lucky (with Paa). But I hate it,” Abhishek, who played a reel father to his real father Amitabh Bachchan in the 2009 movie, told IANS. “During Paa, I had a very difficult time because the producer in me came in the way of the actor in me. I would be more comfortable in producing a film without me acting in it. If I have to produce a film in which I am acting, that would need a lot of preparation and organization from my part,” he added.

Abhishek next as a producer is Shamitabh, which again stars his megastar father. “Shamitabh is more enjoyable because I am just the producer in that. Production is a very difficult job and it’s a very thankless job,” said the 38-year-old. Being directed by R. Balakrishnan aka R. Balki, the movie also stars Dhanush and Akshara Haasan.
‘Sonali Cable’: Original, layered and largely online Film: “Sonali Cable”; Cast: Rhea Chakraborty, Ali Fazal, Raghav Juyal, Anupam Kher, Swanand Kirkire; Directed by Charudatt Acharya; Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half stars)

alf-way through this interesting film about cable connections and online predilections, the script audaciously bumps off the most endearing character. And I thought that to be the end of the film’s engaging quotient. But no. Sonali Cable persists on grabbing your attention by its collar, pulling it along into a world of curiously convincing characters
whom you may or may not bump into while traveling in the local trains of Mumbai. But they sure as hell look like real people....Except for the central character. As the spunky neighborhood cable operator who promises her customers that their cable connections would never go off-line, Rhea Chakraborty is much too sexy for the role. Her attempts to sound vernacular sound strained simply
because you know this lovely girl belongs to the upper crust. Watch out for Faizal Rasheed as Anupam Kher’s over-qualified over-enthusiastic fixer. He’s a gem of a discovery. Ignore the malicious comments on the film. Go see Sonali Cable. It is a very original and intelligent script, deftly edited and performed. Yes, debutant Charudutt Acharya is a better writer than a director. His characters are must have appeared far more interesting on paper. But then, cinema is not about the written word only. — Subhash K. Jha
‘Happy New Year’ gets ‘U’ certificate, team happy MUMBAI: Farah Khan’s multi-starrer directorial Happy New Year has been passed with a ‘U’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The team of the film, produced by Shah Rukh’s Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd, is excited with the news that will make it possible for audiences of all age groups to watch it at theaters. “We, at Red Chillies Entertainments, have always believed in making a film which can be enjoyed by one and all. And with ‘U’ certificate attached to the film, it is only going to enhance the potential and appeal right from the kids to youngsters to adults,” SRK said in a statement. Apart from Shah Rukh, the film stars Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. Director Farah, who has ensured that the movie has a lot of dance and music, says she has “always believed in making an entertaining film to be enjoyed by not just one section or age-group but everyone”. — IANS

Hollywood still far far away MUMBAI: Actors like Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur may be making inroads into the Hollywood scene, but actor Imran Khan feels the American film industry lacks good roles for Indian talent. “To be honest, I don’t think Indian actors get good roles in Hollywood. You either get to be the hero’s friend, the guy who owns the 7-Eleven (convenience store) on the corner,” the 31-year-old said here on the sidelines of the ongoing Mumbai Film Festival here. “The truth is there are no good roles for Indians in Hollywood. I am very happy here,” added the actor, who has been seen in movies like Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane, I Hate Luv Storys and Delhi Belly. Anil, who featured in a key role in Oscarwinning British film Slumdog Millionaire, was seen in a small role in Tom Cruise-starrer Misson Impossible: Ghost Protocol and was also seen in the eighth season of American TV series 24. Irrfan has featured in international films like A Mighty Heart, The Amazing Spider-Man and Life of Pi, while Nimrat was roped in for a part in the fourth season of the American TV series Homeland. Others in the list are Ali Fazal, who has a cameo in Fast & Furious 7.
Good to see local talents in festivals: Lucky Ali BANGALORE: Bollywood singer, composer and notable figure in the Indian music industry Lucky Ali feels satisfied with the encouragement of local talents in music festivals and says it helps in the growth of the industry. “What I am seeing in the festivals is that they are encouraging local talent and art, for instance — Rajasthani folk music is the part of The Great Indian October fest,” the 56-year-old told IANS on the sidelines of the 10th edition of the Kingfisher Premium — The Great Indian Octoberfest (TGIOF) here. “There is big exchange of culture in India which is good. It’s kind of growth and that looks nice,” He said. Best known for his chartbusting songs O sanam, Anjaani rahon mei, and Na tum jano na hum, the musician took the Bangalorean crowd to the soulful journey of music when he performed live in front of his fans at EZone club here on October 18. From Tera ye aashiyana, Dekha hai aise bhi, Jaane kya dhoondta hai and Aa bhi ja, he struck the right chord with every member present with some of his popular tracks from his hit albums and Bollywood movies. “Bangalore is like my home and I always receive such a warm and thunderous appreciation from all of them that it feels great,” said the singer.
Dia Mirza marries Sahil Sangha
Huma wants to follow in Jolie’s footsteps
NEW DELHI: Actor Dia Mirza, sporting a Ritu Kumar-designed green and beige ensemble, exchanged marital vows with her beau and business partner Sahil Sangha here on October 19. The couple, who got engaged in New York earlier this year, had an Arya Samaj wedding ceremony at a farmhouse in Ghitorni here. The duo came out post wedding and posed for the shutterbugs. If Dia looked royal in Kumar’s creation, the groom looked dapper in a Raghavendra Rathoredesigned outfit. “The look is classic with no embroidery and comprises a cream silk linen brocade achkan with an emerald green pocket square. This has been paired with an inner emerald green kurta which matches with what Dia wore,” Rathore told IANS. “An offwhite safa with a sarpech which has emeralds embedded completes the look. Incidentally, we have also designed the outfits for his mehndi and sangeet,” he added.
NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Huma Qureshi says she wants to follow in Hollywood star Angelina Jolie’s footsteps and direct a film when she grows older. After delivering hits like Gia, Girl, Interrupted and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Jolie, 39, made her directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey in 2011 and Qureshi, Ek Thi Daayan actor is inspired by her. “Right now I can’t direct. Maybe at 55, I would like to direct. I will go the Angelina Jolie way,” the 28-year-old told IANS in a group interaction. Asked if she would like to co-direct with actor and brother Saqib Saleem, Huma said: “Co-directing is not possible with my brother. We have very different opinions. Maybe, we will act in a film together. That will be exciting because both of us are very competitive actors so it would nice.” For now Huma's happy playing an actress in Umesh Kulkarni's Marathi film, Highway. “It is a collage of different stories that unfold on the Mumbai Pune highway,” she says. Then there's Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur based on a novel she was specifically told not to read.
According to sources, celebrities like Lara Dutta, Sushmita Sen Cyrus, Sahukar and Zayed Khan attended the wedding. The former beauty queen has acted in Bollywood films such as Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Parineeta.
Sunny gets a shocker at ‘Splitsvilla’ MUMBAI: Actor Sunny Leone, who’s co-hosting and mentoring the contestants on TV show ‘Splitsvilla’, found herself at the receiving end of a contestant’s outburst. Shravan Reddy lost his cool and hurled a heavy Rajasthani jewellery box at a fellow contestant, but ended up hurting Sunny instead. The production team had to intervene.

INDIAN ENGINEER GETS 1.5-YEAR JAIL FOR TRADE SECRETS THEFT BY A STAFF WRITER
T
RENTON (NJ) -- An Indian engineer who formerly lived in Mahwah, New Jersey, was on October 16 sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing trade secrets from two global medical technology companies based in northern New Jersey, U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman announced. Ketankumar Maniar, 38, aka “Ketan Maniar,” was caught in his hotel room as he was planning his escape back to India in June, 2013. He pleaded guilty earlier before US District Judge Joel Pisano to an information charging him with two counts of theft and attempted theft of trade secrets for his own economic benefit. Maniar has been in custody since his June 2013 arrest. In addition to the prison term, Judge Pisano ordered Maniar to pay $32,454 in restitution to Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BD) and ordered him to forfeit items used to further his crimes,
including computers and storage devices. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Maniar worked from November 2004 until his resignation in January 2011 at C.R. Bard Inc. (Bard), based in Murray Hill, New Jersey, and BD, based in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, two of the world’s leading manufacturers of medical technologies. Maniar worked as an engineer at Bard’s Salt Lake City facility and was responsible for developing molding processes and specifications for catheters, ports and other medical products. From Februar y 2012 until his resignation on May 24, 2013, Maniar worked as a staff engineer at BD’s Franklin Lakes headquarters, where he helped manufacture pre-fillable syringes and pen injectors. Through his work at Bard and BD, Maniar was able to steal secret information related to the companies’ products, including Bard’s development of the first implantable port used for power injection

BURQA-CLAD BANK ROBBER IS ON PROWL AGAIN IN NJ BY A STAFF WRITER

White Horse Pike in Audubon around 2 pm and handed the teller a note demanding cash. The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. This is the third such incident in the last four weeks after the first at the Susquehanna Bank on Market Street in Camden on September 17, and the second on September 25 at the Audubon Savings Bank on S. Employee reports Green Dot scam BY A STAFF WRITER
N
EW PROVIDENCE (NJ) -- An employee at a Springfield Avenue business has told the police that someone tried to run a “Green Dot MoneyPak” scam. The employee said that someone calling himself ‘Tom’ contacted the business, identified himself as an employee of JCP&L and said the business was overdue on the power bill. The caller threatened to turn off the business’ power immediately if the business did not pay $369. The caller said that they could pay the bill with a MoneyPak card that could be purchased at local grocery stores and pharmacies. The employee recognized the scam, hung up the phone and called the police department. The attempted theft is currently under investigation by the detective bureau.
Maniar also had access to secret information related to a self-administered disposable pen injector still under development by BD and not yet available for commercial sale. The Indian engineer admitted he stole Bard and BD trade secrets that he kept after his resignation from those companies. Maniar downloaded numerous files containing Bard or BD product information from his work computers onto multiple computer storage devices, including external hard drives and thumb drives. He also used his work e-mail accounts at Bard and BD to forward trade secrets to his personal e-mail accounts. On June 3, 2013, FBI agents raided and searched Maniar’s rental car and the New Jersey hotel room he stayed in while planning a move back to India, a release from the US Attorney’s office said. Agents seized—among other things— at least one hard drive containing Bard and BD trade secrets.

NJ HEALTH DEPT ALERT AGAINST MEASLES VIRUS BY A STAFF WRITER
W
OODBRIDGE (NJ) -- A person diagnosed with measles may have exposed people to the virus at a Middlesex County hotel late last month, according to the state Department of Health (DOH). In a news release, the DOH advised that anyone who visited The Palace Hotel in Fords between September 25 and September 30 should contact a doctor immediately to discuss the potential exposure and risk of developing the illness. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause serious medical complications. Symptoms include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red and watery eyes. The DOH said that people exposed at The Palace Hotel might develop symptoms as late as October 21. “We urge everyone to check to make sure they and their family members are up-to-date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and all other age-appropriate immunizations,” Health Commissioner
Mary E. O’Dowd said in the release. “Getting vaccinated not only protects you, it protects others around you who are too young to get the vaccine or can’t receive it for medical reasons. Two doses of measles vaccine is more than 99 percent effective in preventing measles.” Measles is easily spread through the air through the mucus or saliva of an infected person when that person talks, coughs or sneezes. Anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated or has not had measles is at risk if they are exposed to the virus, the DOH said. Measles can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and swelling of the brain in 20 per cent of patients, especially children under 5 and adults older than 20. Measles infection in a pregnant woman can lead to miscarriage, premature birth or a low-birth weight baby. The DOH is working with The Palace Hotel, local health departments and with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to locate persons potentially exposed at the hotel.

PRINGFIELD, MASS., Almost three million Asian Indians in the United States are preparing to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, on Oct. 23. For the more than 300,000 Asian-Indian owned firms* in the U.S., the holiday takes on an added dimension, as the celebration marks the beginning of a new business year. To help business owners prepare for the New Year ahead, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) is offering a series of free, no-obligation business seminars in five cities across the country this Diwali. In a special Diwali ritual for businesses known as Chopda Pujan, new account books are opened and blessed. Business owners use this time to reflect on the past year while looking ahead to new opportunities for prosperity and wealth. It is said the goddess of wealth, known as Lakshmi, visits the homes of devotees on this day, and lamps light the way to welcome her. A MassMutual study** found that although 77 percent of Asian Indian business owners believe financial planning for their business is very important, only 43 percent are concerned about who will run their businesses if they or another owner leaves, becomes disabled or dies;
only 46 percent have a formal retirement plan. “Entrepreneurial businesses are vital to our growing economic recovery, so it is concerning that so many business owners seem to be sacrificing their own and their family’s financial future,” says Nimesh Trivedi, Asian-Indian Market lead at MassMutual. “With help, business owners can look past the seemingly overwhelming day-to-day demands of running their businesses and establish and meet their long-term financial goals.” To help Asian Indian business owners open their new books this Diwali and plan for a prosperous new year, MassMutual is offering a series of free video-based seminars featuring stories shared by real business owners. The vignettes explore critical business planning topics, such as passing ownership on from one generation to the next, preparing for the unexpected, the death of an owner, retaining key employees, and proper estate and retirement planning. Seminars addressing these topics critical to Asian Indian business owners will be presented in the following cities across the country this Diwali: • Houston, Oct. 14 • Atlanta: Oct. 18 • San Jose, Calif.: Oct. 24

‘Hope people love my work’ Chaitanya Krishna will be seen in his upcoming Tamil drama ‘Porkuthirai’ IANS, CHENNAI

elugu actor Chaitanya Krishna, who has starred in Tamil film Rowthiram earlier in his career, hopes to find more work in the industry through his upcoming Tamil revenge drama Porkuthirai. “I hope people will appreciate the film and offer me more work in Tamil. I’ve already worked in a Tamil film where I’ve played a villain, so I wish to work again in the language,” Chaitanya, who has decent command over his Tamil, told IANS. Porkuthirai is the Tamil dubbed version of Telugu film Kaalicharan. Chaitanya spent nearly two years on the project. “I had to go through a lot of physical transformation for the role. I had to grow hair and beard for ten ‘I had to go months. My director would come and through a lot of check on me at reguphysical lar intervals to make transformation sure I have the perfect look,” he said. for the role. I “During the course had to grow hair of the shoot, I had to and beard for forgo seven films ten months’ because I felt this film will give me the desired break in the industry. ctor Sriya Reddy, who has been shooting in southern Tamil Nadu’s Theni area for her upcoming Tamil comedy Andaava Kanom, decided to celebrate this year’s Diwali in advance with the people in the locality since she’s been moved by their warmth. “We’ve been shooting here for the past two months. They’ve been tremendous — be it their hospitality or their co-operation to ensure the smooth conduct of the shooting. It was an absolutely fun-filled learning experience to interact and work with them,” Sriya said in a statement. Diwali falls on October 23.

rchana is playing an important role in her upcoming Telugu film Anandini. The film is directed by Nirnayi Pallati. The actor will play the role of an aspiring singer in the film. Talking about the role, Archana said, “It’s a very sweet yet intense character. I’m fond of music and I play an aspiring singer who loses both parents in her childhood and is raised by her maternal uncle. How she bucks the odds to pursue her dream of becoming a singer is the crux of the story.” The curly haired actor is also shooting for another
movie directed by Prabhakaran. “The film has five different stories and I play the protagonist in one of those plots where I’m stranded on the national highway and a guy gives me a lift. How we fall in love over a series of events,” Archana added. She has also wrapped up shooting for a Tamil film.
FILM REVIEW | TELUGU
‘Oka Laila Kosam’, a messy romantic movie Film: “Oka Laila Kosam”; Cast: Naga Chaitanya, Pooja Hegde, Suman, Sayaji Shinde, Ali and Posani Krishna Murali; Director: Vijay Kumar Konda; Rating: **1/2

n the opening scene, we’re introduced to Karthik (Naga Chaitanya), who, minutes before his MBA graduation ceremony, tears all the offer letters he has received from the best multinational companies. He goes on to deliver a speech about finding the true meaning of freedom, which according to him doesn’t lie in fat paychecks and behind the desks of a

large company. He asks his father for a year-long break to travel the world to discov-
er himself. Six months later, Karthik’s father asks him if he has attained any clarity about his
career. Karthik says he wants to write a book. A surprised father, not knowing how to react, says he has another six months to get things straight. The entertainment in Oka Laila Kosam comes in installments. While scenes featuring Ali evoke laughter, that can’t be considered entertainment because most of it is force-fit for commercial reasons. You really wish you had the power to stop the film whenever you want. Oka Laila Kosam, which is partly refreshing, is messed up mostly as it suffers from cliched storytelling. —Haricharan Pudipeddi

Andhra firecrackers unit blast toll mounts to 16 IANS, HYDERABAD
T HYDERABAD: The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or MIM, which made an impressive debut in the Maharashtra elections, will now focus on Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and other states, said party president Asaduddin Owaisi. — IANS
he toll in October 20 blast in firecrackers-making unit in Andhra Pradesh rose to 16, with four injured succumbing at a hospital since October 20, police said on October 21. The dead include 13 women, all workers of the unit. Three injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kakinada town while three other workers are said to be missing. The accident took place in a building in coastal East Godavari district's Vakatippa village, about 25 km from Kakinada. A burning cigarette is suspected to have led to fire in the unit where crackers were being manufactured illegally. While 11 people were charred to

Elavarisi — who were released along with her from the jail, accompanied her. A special court on September 27 convicted Jayalalithaa in the `666.5-million disproportionate assets’ case and sentenced her to four years simple imprisonment and a fine of `1 billion. The three others were sentenced to four years jail term with a fine of `100 million each.

ISRO spy case: HC quashes government order IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
T
he Kerala government will seek legal opinion on the Kerala High Court's ruling quashing the state government's order to drop charges against three retired police officers who had implicated and arrested scientist S. Nambi Narayanan in the ISRO espionage case. Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala told reporters here on October 21 that they are yet to get the details of the court directive.
S Nambi Narayanan

‘No bilateral series with Windies’ The Indian cricket board decides to initiate legal action against the West Indies Cricket Board for calling back their team mid-way from the India tour IANS, HYDERABAD
T
he Indian cricket board on October 21 decided to initiate legal action against the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and cancel all bilateral series against the Caribbean side whose players withdrew mid-way from an ongoing India tour last week. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the decision at its working committee meet here. “The BCCI will initiate legal proceedings against the WICB due to the abrupt cancellation of the tour,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said. The Dwayne Bravo-led visiting team was yet to play the fifth OneDay International (ODI) at Kolkata and a one-off Twenty20 International at Cuttack followed by three Tests at Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ahmedabad when they decided to withdraw. “All bilateral tours between BCCI and WICB stand suspended,” Patel added.
Following the fourth ODI at Dharamsala, the West Indies players chose not to complete the tour because of an ongoing payment structure dispute with the WICB and West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA). Skipper Bravo, unhappy with the manner in which WIPA president Wavell Hinds had handled the dispute, said the players had lost faith in the WIPA. The BCCI also appreciated the gesture of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) which will send its team to play a five-match ODI series, starting November 2, to fill the gap in the cricket calendar left by the Windies’ cancellation. The working committee, with interim BCCI president Shivlal Yadav in the chair, confirmed that India, which were supposed to host Sri Lanka in a Test series in JulyAugust next year, will now travel to the neighboring nation. “This tour is in lieu of their scheduled tour to India next year which will be reciprocated by India touring Sri Lanka in July-August

2015,” Patel said. The five ODIs will be played in Cuttack, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. The meeting was attended, among others, by Yadav, International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman N. Srinivasan, BCCI
secretary Patel and Indian team director Ravi Shastri. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will write to the International Cricket Council (ICC) to apprise the world body about the whole issue. “We will write to the ICC
informing them about the conduct of the WICB,” BCCI joint secretary Anurag Thakur said after the meeting. The joint secretary confirmed that the Indian board will send a notice to the WICB to claim damages.

ndia’s Virat Kohli moved up to the second spot in the batting chart while Bhuvneshwar Kumar earned his maiden entry into the top 10 bowler’s list, following their 2-1 OneDay International (ODI) series win over West Indies, in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings released on October 20. Kohli benefitted in the rankings following his contribution of 191 runs in the series, which included a top score of 127 in the fourth ODI in Dharamsala on October 17. He climbed one place into the second position and 16 points off the top spot, occupied by South African AB de Villiers with 869 points. South Africa’s Hashim Amla dropped a place to the third spot and has 848 points. Ajinkya Rahane is the other major mover in the batting rankings, jumping up nine places to 59th position while West Indies’ Marlon Samuels leaped 20 places to 41st after compiling the highest series aggregate of 254 runs with two centuries against India. In the bowling rankings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar made it to the top 10 of the chart for the first time, improving by seven places to occupy the seventh spot. He has 657 points, three behind compatriot Ravindra Jadeja. Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal is at the top with 770 points.

We are totally unaware of what happened in HI,” Thomson said in a statement. The SAI director general Terry Walsh also said that the Australian could ing bureaucracy in India which I have discussed with him the issues believe, in the long term, is not in of concern before taking the decithe best interests of Indian hockey sion. “If Walsh had any complaint or its players,” Walsh wrote in a let- about the functioning of SAI, he ter to SAI director general Jiji could have very well come and discussed it with us.” Thomson.
Kashyap out of Denmark Open IANS, NEW DELHI
L
eading Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap fought valiantly but went down to reigning World Champion Chen Long of China in the men’s singles semi-final of the $600,000 Denmark Open Super Series Premier. Unlike the final scores suggest, it was a close encounter before the Indian went on to lose the 45minute encounter 16-21, 15-21 to the second seeded Chinese. With the win, the World No.2 extended
his head-to-head to 6-1 over Kashyap. It was obviously going to be extremely tough for the World No.28 Indian to come back from there and Chen sealed the tie in his favor in the next few minutes.
Oscar Pistorius given 5-year imprisonment PRETORIA: South African Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was on October 21 sentenced by a Pretoria court to five years in jail for the culpable homicide death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. n intense workout for as little as 20 minutes can enhance episodic or long term memory about previous events by about 10 percent in healthy young adults, say researchers. Many existing studies have shown that long aerobic exercises like running can boost memory but the present study had participants lift weights just once every two days before testing them. “Even without doing expensive MRI scans, our results give us an idea of what areas of the brain might be supporting these exercise-induced memory benefits,” said Audrey Duarte, an associate professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology’ school of psychology in the US. For the study, the team showed 90 photos to the participants on a computer screen before they started stretching their legs. The participants returned to the lab 48 hours later and saw a series of 180 pictures - the 90 originals were mixed in with 90 new photos. Those who exercised remembered about 60 percent of the photos. “Our study indicates that people do not have to dedicate large amounts of time to give their brain a boost,” said Lisa Weinberg, a Georgia Tech graduate student who led the project. Although the study used weight exercises, resistance activities such as squats or knee bends would likely produce the same results, noted Weinberg. “The findings are encouraging because they are consistent with rodent literature that pinpoints exactly the parts of the brain that play a role in memory benefits caused by exercise,” concluded Lisa Weinberg. The study appeared in the journal Acta Psychologica.

Break-ups can shoo away Twitter friends
‘Sexting’ initiates sexual behavior in teens IANS, NEW YORK
S LONDON: If you have gone through break-up woes recently, be ready to lose your twitter followers too. According to a study, break-ups can predict a loss of followers on social media. For the study, researchers analysed data from 80,000 users identified as couples. They tracked these users from November 2013 to April 2014, filtered the data and arrived at a group of 661 pairs, who had been in a relationship but had broken up. The result was shocking: not only did the communication between these couples decrease as they neared break-up, both people on either end of a break-up tended to lose 15 to 20 Twitter followers in the aftermath. It might be because of formerly mutual friends taking sides, the study said. “It is also possible that the upsurge in ‘depressed’ tweets might drive away some followers,” the Daily Dot website noted, quoting the authors. — IANS
ending sexually explicit images via phones or tablets is now a normal activity among teenagers, leading to increased sexual behavior among them, found a study. Sexting may serve as a gateway to actual sexual behavior or as a way to indicate one’s readiness to take intimacy onto the next level, researchers noted. “Sexting is not strictly limited to at-risk teens any more. The results indicate that sexting may precede sexual intercourse in some cases and further cements the idea that sexting is a credible sign of teenage
sexual activity,” explained Jeff Temple, associate professor and psychologist at the University of Texas’ medical branch at Galveston. The findings are part of an ongoing six-year investigation of an ethnically diverse group of ado-
lescent students from south-east Texas. The teenagers completed anonymous surveys detailing their history of sexting, sexual activity and other behavior throughout the six years. Researchers found that the odds of being sexually active as high school juniors was slightly higher for youth who sent a “sext” or naked picture of themselves the previous year, compared to teens who did not “sext”. Further, researchers did not find a link between sexting and risky sexual behavior over time which may suggest that sexting is becoming a part of growing up.
Post a ‘sick selfie’ to get office leave! NEW YORK: Not feeling like going to office? Post a “sick selfie” to prove to your boss that you are not feeling well. According to a survey, more people are posting images pretending to be unwell with the Twitter hashtag #sickieselfie. “Showing off a hangover and to prove illness to friends or co-workers emerged as the most common reasons for uploading a ‘sick selfie’,” revealed web coupon site vouchercloud that conducted the survey. Researchers asked 2,300 respondents between ages 18 and 45 about when and why they post selfies.
Parents could drive car choices of children IANS, NEW YORK
W
hat brand of car you drive may influence the car choices of your kids too, says a study. Children are 39 percent more likely to buy a particular brand of automobile if their parents bought that brand, the findings showed. “In theory, these findings could change the way automakers price and market their cars,” said study co-author Soren Anderson from Michigan State University in the U.S.
If young buyers approach dealers with prior loyalty to a brand, thanks to their parents, manufacturers might consider upping prices of entry-level vehicles. Conversely, more incentives could be offered on sport utility vehicles and other high-end vehicles to snag older customers - and, eventually, their children. The researchers studied auto ownership of more than 4,300 young adults matched to nearly 2,600 parents. Survey data from the families was collected every two years between 1999 and 2011.
