Kejriwal threw the challenge for a debate a day after Bedi was named the Bharatiya Janata Party’s chief ministerial candidate. The BJP retorted by terming Kejriwal “I-run-man” and Bedi “Iron Lady”. The battle for Delhi intensified this week, following clarity about the campaign leaders of the BJP, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress. Kejriwal and Bedi took potshots at each other. Kejriwal, a former Delhi chief minister, led a road show in central Delhi but could not file his nomination papers as thousands joined him leading to a delay. He could not reach the district magistrate’s office on time and is expected to file nominations Wednesday. Later, Kejriwal addressed a gathering in Krishna Nagar, the seat Bedi is contesting from and said the BJP would blame her for its

This year is no different, with the stage set here to host intellectual minds at the festival beginning January 21. Ever since its inception in 2006, when it began on a small scale as part of the Jaipur Heritage International Festival, the five-day festival has been holding the fort on the same address: 17th-century Diggi Palace, as the organizers feel the venue compliments the sensibilities of the world’s largest free literary festival. Defiant Obama bats for middle class We can’t put the security of families at risk by taking away their health insurance, or unraveling the new rules on Wall Street or refighting past battles on immigration when we’ve got a system to fix, he says in state address ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
N
oting that he had no more campaigns to run, a defiant Barack Obama set out to seal his legacy in his final two years with a blunt veto threat against any attempts to undermine his legislative achievements. “I have no more campaigns to run,” he reminded the Republican-controlled Congress as he outlined an ambitious vision for “middle-class economics” with a call for tax reform, free community college and child care this week. “My only agenda for the next two years is the same as the one I’ve had since the day I swore an oath on the steps of this Capitol - to do what I believe is best for America,” he said in his annual State of the Union message. “If you share the broad vision I outlined tonight, join me in the work at hand. If you disagree with parts of it, I hope you’ll at least work with me where you do agree,” Obama said. In an address running over an hour, Obama in a dark suit and a light blue tie also offered a blunt veto threat of any Congressional proposals to undermine his major legislative achievements to date. “We can’t put the security of families at risk by taking away their

health insurance, or unraveling the new rules on Wall Street, or refighting past battles on immigration when we’ve got a system to fix,” he said. “And if a bill comes to my desk that tries to do any of these things, it will earn my veto.” Obama said the “shadow of crisis has passed” after years dominated by wars, recession and the threat of terror, saying that it’s now time for the nation to “turn the page.” “America, for all that we’ve endured; for all the grit and hard

US delegation arrived here for the first time since the two neighboring countries decided to restore diplomatic ties last month, Xinhua reported this week. The visiting six-member delegation, headed by US Senator Patrick Leahy, during its stay in the capital city discussed with Cuban officials and civilian leaders the practical measures required to normalize the relations. Both countries agreed to restore diplomatic ties that were severed by the US in 1961, as President Barack Obama called for an end to the long economic embargo against its old
Cold War enemy in mid-December, 2014. “We will discuss our expectations and those of Cubans relating to the normalization of relations,” Leahy said. Leahy’s visit precedes a planned meet of the US and Cuban diplomats, who will discuss principles and steps for the re-establishment of the diplomatic relations severed in January 1961, and the reciprocal opening of embassies in Havana and Washington. The US and Cuban delegations will be respectively headed by Roberta Jacobson, the US deputy Secretary of State for Latin America, and Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, the head of Cuban foreign ministry’s US affairs section.
work required to come back; for all the tasks that lie ahead, know this: The shadow of crisis has passed, and the State of the Union is strong,” he said. Under Obama’s plan, tax hikes on the wealthy would help finance tax breaks for middleincome Americans, including a $500 boost for families with two working spouses and a tripling of the child care tax credit. Other proposals included a push for more paid sick leave and a free community college education for qualified students. Focused on
domestic politics, Obama made no reference to his upcoming historic trip to India later this week. But he accused China of wanting to “write the rules for the world’s fastest-growing region. That would put our workers and our businesses at a disadvantage.” “Why would we let that happen? We should write those rules. We should level the playing field,” he said seeking” trade promotion authority to protect American workers, with strong new trade deals from Asia to Europe.”
Obama vows to veto new Iran sanctions WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said he would veto proposed bipartisan legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran as long as diplomatic negotiations over a nuclear deal remain underway. “I will veto a bill that comes to my desk,” ABC News reported, citing Obama responding to a question at a joint press conference with visiting British Prime Minister David Cameron. “There is no good argument for us to undercut, undermine the negotiations until they play out,” Obama said. Obama said hitting Iran’s economy with new sanctions in the next 60 to 90 days would violate an interim agreement reached last year, deepen recriminations and heighten the risk of a military confrontation. “Congress needs to show patience,” Obama said. If a deal is not reached, with assurances that Iran could not obtain a nuclear weapon, “I would be the first one to come to Congress to say we need to tighten the screws,” he added. Republicans and Democrats in the Congress are pushing for another immediate round of sanctions on the Iranian economy, a move led by some high profile White House allies. At a Senate Democratic retreat Thursday in Baltimore, Obama reportedly clashed with Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey who is leading the charge on new Iran sanctions, even as talks are ongoing. While the gathering was closed to reporters, Menendez was said to have taken “personal offence” to Obama’s suggestion that the legislation was politically motivated, sources said.

U
S Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to London next week to attend a foreign ministers’ meeting that would focus on strategizing ways to counter the Islamic State (IS), the State Department announced. Kerry was to be in London on January 22 “to consult with the UK and other counter-IS coalition partners on our shared efforts to degrade and defeat IS,” Xinhua reported, citing State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki as saying. Kerry would also hold talks with his British counterpart, Philip Hammond, who would cohost the meeting, Psaki added. About 20 foreign ministers

from the US-led coalition are expected to attend the London meeting to discuss progress made
so far in fighting IS militants, who have taken over large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria. The top US diplomat’s trip to London follows the visit to Washington last Friday by British Prime Minister David Cameron, who held a summit with US President Barack Obama, covering a range of issues including counter-terrorism, world economy, cyber-security, Iran, Ebola and Russia. Obama and Cameron pledged to continue close cooperation to fight terrorism, and work together to boost cyber-security and also thwart terror groups’ efforts to radicalise people on social media. The summit was held after terror strikes in France on January 7 left 17 people killed.

esides its powerful symbolism and optics, President Barack Obama’s presence as the guest of honor at India’s Republic Day reflects the big change in India-US relations since Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power. He even advanced the State of the Union address to a joint session of the US Congress traditionally given in the last week of January, by a week to be at India’s day of pride and pageantry. That tells what he thinks of India and how worthwhile it’s to spend his time and energy on a reenergized India that is more important and more influential and more of an opportunity, diplomatic sources told IANS. The Obama visit starting Sunday marks many firsts — first American leader to stand in the open for over two hours to watch the parade despite the security challenge, first to make an India only trip for the second time while in office. appening like a quick follow-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s November US visit that secured its corporate commitments of $41 billion in India, President Barack Obama’s visit later this week is expected to result in major announcements on the Make In India front, informed sources said. Amitabh Kant, secretary in the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP), is currently heading a team in Washington for an outreach on the Make in India program that will be attended by all top American firms with interest in India. A source in the commerce and industry ministry told IANS that the outreach will convey the improved environment for doing business in India and assure US investors of a stable policy regime. The delegation will meet with officials of several top companies to get investments in the industrial corridors planned in India. During the Obama visit, intellectual property rights and a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) would be key issues on the agenda, according to a US State Department offi-

Obama is expected to accompanied by First Lady Michelle Obama, but their daughters Malia and Sasha are likely to give the India trip a miss because of their school. The Obama-Modi summit is expected to give them an opportunity to assess how much progress has been made since they met in Washington last September. Besides a tour of the state of the world, the talks are expected to cover a lot of ground on economic issues as also, climate change, defence and security, including intelligence sharing and the stalled India-US nuclear deal. US Undersecretary of defense Frank Kendall, the Pentagon’s point person for the bilateral defense relationship, is making his fourth trip to India to give a push to their Defense Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI), ahead of Obama’s visit. Obama and Modi are also likely to discuss the US troop withdrawal in Afghanistan and its implications for India’s security, tensions on India-Pakistan borders and crossborder terrorism.

While officials from both sides are working on a multi-billion dollar fund to invest in India’s renewable energy sector to be announced during the US president’s visit, solar power projects have reportedly become problematic due to the Make In India campaign. India is expected to push for an easier US visa regime for its professionals and a totalization pact that would exempt Indian workers from having to make social security contributions.
s President Barack Obama embarks on his second trip to India in fours years to be the chief guest for Republic Day, it’s noteworthy that only six US presidents have visited India in 67 years since independence. Top level exchanges between world’s largest and the oldest democracies began with India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru visiting the US in 1949. But it took another 10 years for Washington to return the call with president Dwight D Eisenhower going to India in December 1959. John F. Kennedy, who succeeded Eisenhower, could not visit India, but sent vice president Lyndon Johnson to India in the very first year in office in 1961. First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy toured India the next year. Kennedy was assassinated in November 1963. Richard Nixon came calling as president in July 1969, six months after assuming office, to ease tensions with then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi. The two leaders never really hit it off with
Jawaharlal Nehru receiving US President Dwight D. Eisenhower at Parliament House in New Delhi in 1959.
Nixon taking a hostile stand against India during the 1971 Bangladesh war. It would be another nine years before Jimmy Carter became the third US president to visit India in January 1978 after the general elections in India in 1977 when Gandhi lost power after popular revolt against her emergency regime (1975-77). It was another 22 years before Bill Clinton came in March 2000 to take out the chill from India-US relations since India’s second set of nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998.
George W Bush, who was the fifth US president to visit India, in March 2006 with first lady Laura and established a rapport with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Barack Obama, who had in November 2009 held the first state dinner of his presidency in honor of then prime minister Manmohan Singh, visited India in November 2010. He became the second US president after Nixon in 1969 to visit India in his first term in office and the second after Eisenhower to address a joint session of the Indian Parliament.

T
hree Democratic lawmakers, including the lone Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera, whose parents moved to the US from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat in the 1950s, will join President Barack Obama on his India trip. Bera, co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and India Americans, will be joined by his predecessor Joe Crowley, who is currently vice chair of the Democratic Caucus and Senator Mark Warner, co-chair of Senate India caucus. “As the son of Indian immigrants, I am extremely honored to be a part of this historic trip to India with the president,” said Bera.
“Prime Minister Modi’s trip to the United States last year was a turning point in relations for our countries, and now this trip will be an important opportunity to continue to move the US-India relationship forward,” he said. “As the oldest and largest democracies in the world, our countries have many common interests and I hope this will be another step toward realizing the full potential of the US-India partnership,” Bera added. Bera became India Caucus cochair at the beginning of the current 114th Congress. Formed in 1993, the India Caucus is a bipartisan group of members dedicated to championing strong ties between the US and India and supporting the Indian-

It was done by the Assocham office in New York along with its partner channels. Asserting that the benefits of
Obama’s visit to India will go far beyond bilateral relations, Assocham president Rana Kapoor said: “It sends a broad message to the rest of the world as well that India is the place to be in.” Almost 72 percent of the 118 corporate leaders said they expect President Obama to encourage Narendra Modi to give more market access and remove road blocks for the US companies which are keen on participating in a big way in some of the flagship programmes of the Indian government — such as Make in India, Smart Cities, sanitation (Swachh Bharat) and the focus on renewable energy, especially solar energy.

Born in Hasselt, Belgium, Banerjee has formed Braigo Labs in Palo Alto and plans to start selling a more durable version of the printer. The eighth-grader from Champion School in San Jose, California, wants to finally develop a desktop Braille printer that brings the cost down to $350 from the current $2000 for education, teaching and home use purposes.

Frank Islam receives Martin Luther award WASHINGTON: An eminent IndianAmerican entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Islam has been presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Award in recognition of his contribution to the legacy of the great leader through his efforts in international service and civil engagement. The award, which carries the name of Martin Luther King Jr., an apostle of peace, is about building bridges between humanity. The award was presented to Islam by Harry Johnson, president of the Memorial Foundation Inc. and one of the honorary vice chairs of the event, which was held at Willard Intercontinental, the American Bazaar reported Monday. “I feel doubly blessed to be given this honor because of the indelible connection between King and that other famous civil and human rights
leader from my homeland of India, Mahatma Gandhi,” said Islam, who came to the US as a student in the 1970s. He added that both King and Gandhi “have been beacons to me in my personal life, and charitable and philanthropic involvement”. Islam also said that the award was especially important to him because of its emphasis on “peace and nonviolence”. “More lives have been lost in the past 100 years than at any given point in time. Whether it is in the name of religion, nationalism or any other extremist ideology, thousands are being killed every year,” he said. Last year, President Obama appointed him to the board of Trustees of the Kennedy Center. He also serves on the International Advisory Committee of the US Institute of Peace.

Vihaan is the only child of Jayasree, a clinical physical therapist, and Raghu Ram Chamala. The toddler has also memorized names of planets, days, months, chemistry elements, Telugu and English alphabets and words.
Banerjee came up with the idea of integrating his love of Lego and willingness to find an alternative way to help the visually impaired. It resulted in the invention of an open source cost-reduced “DIY braille printer”. He called it “Braigo v1.0” as a proof of concept to show everyone that we can do better to help the people in need. Currently, the company is working on different innovative ideas to bring to market alternative solutions to costly products currently available starting with braille printing/embossing technology. The feat has also earned him a place on the 2014 “Silicon Valley Business Journal’s 40 Under 40” list.
Biosensor to help machines smell LONDON: In a first, an Indian-origin researcher from the University of Manchester has created a biosensor that can help machines smell the way humans do. The new generation of biosensors with an acute ability to sniff out problems can help machines smell when food has gone bad or how much pollution is in the atmosphere. "It has been challenging to get machines to be able to differentiate between smells that are mirror images of each other, which was a real barrier to creating machines which are able to smell as well or better than humans," explained professor Krishna Persaud, lead author of the paper. To develop the biosensor, Persaud along with colleagues from University of Bari in Italy utilized an odorantbinding protein. Such proteins are found in the mucus of the nose which work olfactory receptors helping us to create our perception of smell.

ndian-origin researcher Tina Chowdhury from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and her team have developed a new “microcapsule” treatment delivery that can reduce inflammation in cartilage affected by osteoarthritis and reverse damage to tissue. “If this method can be transferred to patients, it could drastically slow the progression of osteoarthritis and even begin to repair damaged tissue,” said Chowdhury from QMUL’s school of engineering and materials science. A protein molecule called C-type
Tina Chowdhury
natriuretic peptide (CNP) which occurs naturally in the body, is known to reduce inflammation and aid in the repair of damaged tissue. However, CNP cannot be used to treat osteoarthritis in patients
because it cannot target the damaged area even when the protein is injected into the cartilage tissue. This is because CNP is easily broken down and cannot reach the diseased site. The team constructed tiny microcapsules with individual layers containing CNP that could release the protein slowly and, therefore, deliver the treatment in the most effective way. In experiments on samples of cartilage taken from animals, they showed that the microcapsules could deliver the anti-inflammatory CNP in a highly effective way. The research was funded by Arthritis Research UK and the AO Foundation.

EU lifts ban on mangoes The measures will allow the import of mango fruits before the start of the next import season in March 2015 IANS, BRUSSELS
A
proposal by the European Commission, the EU’s executive body, to lift the ban on importing Indian mangoes was endorsed by EU member states on January 20. A Commission press release said that the import into the EU territory of certain fruit and vegetables including mango, bitter gourd, eggplant and snake gourd from India was prohibited last April due to a high number of consignments intercepted at arrival in the EU infested with quarantine pests,
mainly insects. An audit carried out by the Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office in India in September 2014 showed significant improvements in the phytosanitary export certification system. India has also provided assurances
that appropriate measures are now available to ensure that the exports of mango fruits are free from quarantine pest, like the fruit flies not known to occur in the EU, it said. The measures will allow the import of mango fruits before the
start of the next import season in March 2015. At a later stage, when more evidence is collected regarding the Indian phytosanitary certification, the prohibition of the vegetables will be reviewed, it added.

Describing Sri Lanka as “a truly close neighbor and friend”, Modi offered New Delhi’s continued support and partnership to Colombo and the Sri Lankan people in “realizing their aspirations”. The prime minister made the observations when Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister Mangala

Modi admired Sirisena’s vision of a “truly Sri Lankan government”, inclusive of all voices, and the initial steps taken by the new government for political reconciliation and inclusiveness. After Modi, India has turned aggressive: Daily ISLAMABAD: Since Narendra Modi’s coming to power, the Indian establishment has adopted a more aggressive stance, a Pakistani daily said on January 20 and expressed concern for bilateral ties in view of the row over the Pakistan International Airlines office in New Delhi. The Indian authorities have asked the Pakistan national flag carrier to “dispose off” its properties in New Delhi, saying they were ‘unauthorized’ purchases. Stating that the people-to-people contact becomes the first casualty whenever bilateral ties turn sour, the Dawn in an editorial said it was difficult to comprehend why the issue had been raised nearly a decade after the properties were purchased. “Assuming that the Indian government is right on a point of technicality, we must nonetheless accept that when it comes to India-Pakistan relations, there are more than just legal or administrative details involved -- there is always a deeper context, one that is completely political,” it wrote.

Modi also accepted an invite to Colombo. Samaraweera, who met Sushma Swaraj Sunday, discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and reconciliation efforts in Sri Lanka. Indian development partnership projects in Sri Lanka and issues related to the alleged trespassing of Indian fishermen into Sri Lankan waters were also discussed Sunday. At the Sushma Swaraj-Samaraweera meeting that lasted three hours, New Delhi agreed to work “closely and extensively” with Colombo. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has granted bail to Gali Janardhan Reddy, a former Karnataka tourism minister and a mining magnate, after he spent more than three years in jail in connection with an illegal mining case. A bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu, Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice Arun Mishra granted bail to Reddy after Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh - appearing for the CBI - told the court that the investigation in the case had been completed and a chargesheet had been filed. Janardhan Reddy and his two brothers own the Obulapuram mining company. They were ministers in the BJP government of then chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa. However, all three were removed after their arrest in an illegal mining case. Granting him bail, the court said he would furnish a bail bond of Rs.10 lakh and a sureity of like amount.
population is under threat, it is heartening that India’s tiger numbers are increasing. This was not the situation a decade ago,” the minister said. A total of 3,78,118 sq km of forest area in 18 tiger states was surveyed with Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala registering an
improvement in tiger population, said an official statement. As many as 1,540 individual tigers were identified through images collected from 9,735 camera trap locations across the country’s tiger landscapes. Because of the extensive survey effort and camera trap results collected form 43 tiger reserves as well as national parks, which identified nearly 70 percent of the estimated tiger number, these figures are most accurate ever, said director Dipankar Ghose, Species and Landscapes at World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) India, a partner in the survey. Feeling proud of rising to the challenge of saving the tiger, Javadekar said India turned the situation around and was now “ready to exchange tigers and share our good practices with other countries”. Crediting effective tiger habitat management and community participation to streamline their conservation, Javadekar attributed the improved result to the success of official measures like Special Tiger Protection Force, Special Programme for Orphan Tiger cubs, efforts to control poaching, and initiatives to minimize human-animal conflict and encroachment. The minister noted that India was willing to donate tiger cubs to the international community and contribute to the global effort to save the tiger.

With five deaths and about 50 new cases reported Tuesday, the chief minister called an emergency meeting of the state cabinet Wednesday evening to discuss the emergency measures to be taken. Telangana Health Secretary Suresh Chanda has also left for New Delhi to brief the officials of union health ministry and seek help. KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, voiced unhappiness over the
performance of the health department. He felt that health authorities remained unmoved despite the increasing number of cases. Declaring an all out war on swine flu, he reviewed the situation with Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and the officials of the health department and sought a detailed report. He has also called a meeting with the private hospitals to discuss measures to be taken by them to deal with the increasing number of cases. The chief minister said the government was ready to spend any amount of money to make the vaccines available.

atting legend Rahul Dravid said the presence of multiple match-winners in India’s World Cup squad gives the title-holders a strong chance of retaining the mega trophy in Australia and New Zealand. “I think India have a good chance to win the World Cup because we have so many match-winners,” Dravid said on the sidelines of a sports lecture here. “Such is the format of the World Cup that getting into the quarter-finals should be easy for the top teams. Then after reaching the last eight stage, there are only three knock-out matches and we have got the match-winners who could win you the three knock-out games, on any given day.” The World Cup begins from February 14.
ICC to tone down sledging in WC DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is aiming to tone down on-field disrespectful behaviour and sledging during the World Cup which commences in Australia and New Zealand from February 14. “Over the last six months, or even going back further to the last Ashes series, there have been too many examples of player behaviour going too far and overstepping the boundaries of acceptabilities. The amount of sledging and disrespect shown by players to each other was bad,” ICC chief executive David Richardson said in a statement this week. “Since then, we have done a lot of work with our umpires and match referees to ensure that they are much more pro-active in terms of policing behaviour on the field and when players do over-step the mark, taking appropriate action.” The former South Africa wicketkeeper stressed the need for players to remember their responsibilities to uphold the sport’s integrity at all times. “Over the last three or four months you have seen 12 ICC Code of Conduct charges laid against people for exactly that - disrespectful behavior on the field,” said Richardson. “For the World Cup, it will be no different and at all pre-event briefings with the teams, the match referees will be making sure that that message is delivered loud and clear.”
Dravid specifically pointed out India’s premier batsman and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who could decide the outcome of the competition. “We have players of the quality of Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni just to name a couple who can actually win you games single-handedly. And that is what the World Cup can become about,” he noted. “You reach the quarter-finals, have three good days, have a bit of luck and you could win it. Why not?” Asked about India’s apparent bowling weakness which could be their reason for downfall, Dravid said it is the team’s batting strength that India has to bank upon while the bowling unit should complement the effort of the batsmen. Dravid tipped four teams - Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and India as the top four teams, one of which is likely to lift the coveted trophy.
Australian Open: Paes, Sania move to second round IANS, MELBOURNE
S
ania Mirza and Leander Paes made it a pleasant week for Indian tennis fans, winning their respective opening round doubles matches in the Australian Open here. The Indo-South African pair of Leander Paes and Raven Klaasen beat American pair of Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the first round. Sania Mirza and Chinese Taiei’s Hsieh Su-wei got their tournament campaign off to a strong start, winning their first round match 6-2, 60 against Maria Irigoyen of Argentina and Romina Oprandi of Switzerland.
Sania Mirza
Leander Paes
Paes and Klaasen, seeded 10th, took 91 minutes to win their match, breaking the opponents serve once
in the first set, hitting 35 winners on their way to victory. They will now face the winners of
the match between Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey and the Italian duo of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini. Earlier in the day, Sania, who recently reached her career best doubles ranking of No.5 for the second time, started the match in a dominating fashion at the Melbourne Park. The second seeded pair asserted their dominance early in the match and ultimately hit 23 winners compared to a mere eight by their opponents. Under pressure, their opponents committed 21 unforced errors, 13 more than the Sania-Hsieh pair who claimed the match in 48 minutes.
Tri-series India’s big test ahead of World Cup VETURI SRIVATSA, NEW DELHI
L
ess than a month away from the cricket World Cup, all those touted as prospective favorites are fiercely involved in a tri or bilateral series. India are among the front-runners as reigning champions. Also, the limited overs format is considered their best suit. India, Australia and England are engaged in a highly competitive tri-series Down Under, New Zealand and Sri Lanka measuring each other up and South Africa are battling it out with West Indies.
Indian batsman Virat Kohli
Among the top Test-playing nations, Pakistan are the only ones to complete their schedule, playing Australia and New Zealand in the United Arab Emirates. Among the top 10 ODI batsmen in 2014, only two Indians Virat Kohli, at three, and Shikhar Dhawan at nine, figure with Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara (No.1), skipper Angelo Mathews (2) and Tlekaratne Dilshan (4) among the top five and Mahela Jayawardene at number eight to make it four. South Africans Hashim Amla (5), AB de Viliers (6) and Faf du Plessis (10) English-
man Joe Root (7) completing the list. The other Indians are Ajinkya Rahane (13), Ambati Rayudu (21) and Rohit Sharma (22). Kohli, Dhawan, Rahane and Rohit should provide the strokeful platform for the sloggers to carry it forward. The top-heavy batting gives some flexibility to plan their team composition giving weightage to the bowling. The tri-series will give an opportunity to try out the bowling, including the much-maligned Stuart Binny. The tri-series will give a fair idea as to who th Indians are going to perform in the mega event.

Yo Yo Honey Singh is back
R
apper Yo Yo Honey Singh sent gossip mills abuzz after he went missing from work and public appearances about three months ago. There were several theories about his sudden ‘disappearance’. While some stories suggested that he was on the run because the Nagpur police had booked him in a case of indecency, speculation was also rife that he had gone into depression after actor Shah Rukh Khan slapped him in public. Some rumors suggested that he was in rehab for alleged drug abuse. However, a report in the Hindustan Times have found out that Yo Yo is set to get back to work. “He was unwell, but he is fine now. He will be back to work by the end of this month,” says his spokesperson, who does not wish to be named. Talking about the illness, he adds, “He was working round the clock, without any rest. He was stressed and fatigued,” the report added.

‘Baby’ openly talks about terrorism: Akshay SANDEEP SHARMA, NEW DELHI
A
fter impressing audiences and critics with his army officer act in Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty in 2014, Bollywood’s action star Akshay Kumar is once again broaching the subject of terrorism in his forthcoming film Baby. The actor says the intent is to discuss these issues “openly” to spread awareness. If Holiday... was about sleeper cells, Baby revolves around a story about how the common man in

In a tete-a-tete with IANS, Akshay, looking casual in a sweatshirt, jeans and a beanie, opened up about the movie and his action avatar. “I’m playing an undercover agent in the film. We are a group named Baby.” Akshay is happy with the end result of the film, directed by Neeraj Pandey, who had helmed A Wednesday!, a movie that was about the impact of terrorism on the common man.
‘Alone’ — comedy of the week SUBHASH K. JHA, IANS
T
hey fooled us, didn’t they? The two semi-clothed bodies writhing and moaning in the scenic water of Kerala made us believe this is an erotic thriller. “Alone” is actually a very funny film. A kind of inside joke where the characters pretend to be trembling with terror and apprehension. But here’s the secret -- they are actually shaking with laughter. First off, “Alone” is a remake of a Thai film. That perhaps explains why there is much of Bipasha’s ‘thighs’, plus other body parts, in the
film. And for all of Bipasha’s fans, there is good news. There are two of her to savour. Tragically, one of the twins is a ghost (a dead giveaway, if ever there was one), who doesn’t quite care for her sister’s lust interest. Mr. Lust Interest is played by the film’s in-house beefcake Karan Singh Grover. Mr. Grover, god bless his pumped up muscles, is so stiff in all the wrong places that he makes the furniture in a dentist’s waiting room look like designer furniture in a five-star lounge. A lot of the playing time of this atrocious scare-farce goes into Mr. Grover entwining his limbs into his
The sleeper hits of 2014 have left behind big-budget blockbusters PK, Happy New Year and Kick. 2 States has been nominated in various categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female), Best Music and Best Playback Singer (Male). On the other hand, Kangana's Queen stands a chance to win in categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Female) and Best Music. Apart from Queen and 2 States, the Best Film category includes Mary Kom, Haider and PK. Abhishek Varman (“2 States”), Anurag Kashyap (“Ugly”), Rajkumar Hirani (“PK”), Vikas Bahl (“Queen”) and Vishal Bhardwaj (“Haider”) are in the race for the Best Director title. Despite striking gold at the box office with “Kick” and “Happy New Year”, Bollywood's leading Khans Salman and Shah Rukh - have been neglected in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category. Khan is nominated for his satirical comedy-drama “PK” alongside Akshay Kumar (“Holiday”), Hrithik Roshan (“Bang Bang!”), Randeep Hooda (“Rang Rasiya”) and Shahid Kapoor (“Haider”). Actresses Alia Bhatt (“Highway”), Kangana Ranaut (“Queen”), Madhuri Dixit (“Dedh Ishqiya”), Priyanka Chopra (“Mary Kom”), Rani Mukerji (“Mardaani”) and Sonam Kapoor (“Khoobsurat”) are competing for the Best Actress trophy. In Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) category, Abhishek Bachchan (“Happy New Year”), Kay Kay Menon (“Haider”), Riteish Deshmukh (“Ek Villain”), Ronit Roy (“2 States”) and Tahir Raj Bhasin (“Mardaani”) have been nominated. The competition for the Supporting Actress accolades will be between Amrita Singh (“2 States”), Dimple Kapadia (“Finding Fanny”), Juhi Chawla (“Gulaab Gang”), Lisa Haydon (“Queen”) and Tabu (“Haider”). Although music maestro A.R. Rahman has not been included for Best Music category, there is a tough fight between Amit Trivedi (“Queen”), Anupam Amod, Arko Pravo Mukherjee, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Mithoon and Pritam (“Yaariyan”), Himesh Reshammiya, Meet Bros Anjjan and Yo Yo Honey Singh (“Kick”), Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari and SOCH (“Ek Villain”) and ShankarEshaan-Loy (“2 States”).
thriller, the thrill element provided more by the gosht (meat) than the ghost factor. “Alone” moves at its own weird volition. The narrative slackens to a slumber and then suddenly wakes up with a start. The plot is a gravity-defying triangle about a woman, man and a ghost, who is no ‘dost’. The frights could have flowed fast and furious. Instead, what flows is a fatuous plot about two girls who get caught in a squabble over a wooden toyboy. Bipasha tries hard to infuse life into the inert plot. She fails, though we can’t blame her. Even the stunning Kerala locales look listless when weighed against the cartoonish terror and lust of a pair which knows they are getting into the

A memorable journey to DID Super Mom Top 6
C
BY A STAFF WRITER
HICAGO, IL -- ZEE in the Americas has established itself as a mainstay in American households, reaching more than 2 million
viewers. After Dance India Dance (DID) North America 2013, Zee TV Americas came up with another one of its DID franchises-- DID Super Moms North America 2014. The new reality show aimed at giving a platform to mothers who at some point in their lives sacrificed their dancing dreams for marriage and motherhood. Starry-eyed Avani Pandya from Chicago was one such gutsy woman who knew she had what it takes to be a DID Super Mom—the Top 6. After all, she had grown up watching Zee TV and was bent on showing her latent talent and live out her dream. She knew that it wouldn’t be a cake-walk with Miss America Nina Davuluri judging the show and accompanying her as judge would be Rupal Patel, founder, International Arya Dance Academy. “Getting on the DID stage was a dream come true for me. It was an amazing experience and journey to get to this level”, said Avani after

HICAGO, IL -- The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago offers Chicago audiences a chance to see a contemporary spin on the classical South Indian dance form Kuchipudi when Shantala Shivalingappa makes her Chicago debut with her work Akasha during March 5–7 at The Dance Center, 1306 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. The Dance Center’s presentation is in association with Eye On India. Akasha is danced solo by Shantala with four accompanying musicians from India: a vocalist, flutist and two percussionists. “It is said that that Akasha originates in sound, which is a vibration, or said another way, a form of energy and movement,” Shantala writes. Shantala Shivalingappa, born in Madras, India, was raised in Paris. She grew up in a world filled with dance and music, initiated at a young age by her mother, acclaimed dancer Savitry Nair. Lauded by artists and connoisseurs around the world, Shantala brings a captivating contemporary sensibility to the 2,000-yearold traditional South Indian Kuchipudi dance form. Deeply moved and inspired by the grace and purity of Kuchipudi, she dedicated herself to intense and rigorous training from one of its

returning from India. It all started by posting an audition video on the channel website, after the ground auditions had already been concluded for the city of Chicago. Indeed, DID Super Moms North America had given hopes to millions of mothers across North America who aspired to make a name for themselves in the field of dance. More than 20,000 participants from North America had submitted their audition videos, and only 65 of these had been selected to participate in the
Mega Auditions round held in New York on November 10. Then came the day of mega audition where, she says, 53 contestants were selected from all across US and Canada to show off their talent and impress the celebrity judges to get into the next round. From the first beat of her song (Aaja Nachle) to the last expression, she had given her best to rock the stage. She danced with joy when the celebrity judge and choreographer Master Feroz Khan commented, “I really loved your performance, it was a true Bollywood performance for me.”The results of the rigorous selection process were announced shortly after Avani’s performance. Only 12 lucky supermoms out of 53 were supposed to be selected and move forward to the grand finale, to be held in Mumbai. Not knowing what to expect after 12 contestants were already selected, the last group of 13 was asked to come on the stage. Then an exception was made to have one more contestant move forward as the judges couldn’t resist. Recounts Avani: “After some drum rolls and a bit of suspense, my name was announced to be the 13th contestant to enter the grand finale. I
really couldn’t stop expressing my feelings, and at that moment of time I truly believed that there is nothing impossible in life.” The show started with a group dance and the judges’ introduction. The famous Bollywood choreographer, Mudassar Khan joined the judges’ panel, along with Rupal Patel and Miss America, Nina Davuluri. As the dance progressed, they were soon accompanied by Sonam Kapoor, Raj Kumar and Varun from ‘Dolly Ki Doli’, which brought a flare of excitement to the show. The excitement continued with Avani’s two-minute performance leading her to the second round among the top six supermoms. It was a thrilling experience for her to be at this level featuring a wide variety of performances, ranging from Bollywood to classical and so on, and she was looking forward to take on the challenge of the impromptu round. Master Mudassar chose a cane as a prop for me. The performance came down to the home stretch and her memorable journey on DID Super Mom show, the biggest home-grown reality show in India, came to an end. Zee TV’s DID show surely makes superstars out of commoners.

1 DIES, 1 INJURED AS CAR SKIDS OFF LAKE SHORE DRIVE BY A STAFF WRITER

HICAGO, IL -- A woman was killed and a 42-year-old man was seriously injured when their Lexus veered off Lake Shore Drive and flipped over on a frozen lagoon in Lincoln Park early on January 19. The police reached the 2200 block of North Lake Shore Drive around 1:45 a.m., after getting reports of a car crashing into the Diversey Harbor lagoon in Lincoln Park. Rescue crews found the sedan flipped over on the ice-covered lagoon. The police department’s marine unit ran two lines of rope across the lagoon as a small team worked to free a man and a woman trapped

the banks of the lagoon. Debris from the mangled car was spread out over the ice. A section of the guard rail along the west side of Lake Shore Drive was gone, marking the point where the car had barreled off the road. Both people were initially taken to hospitals in serious-to-critical condition. The woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced dead. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition. The police closed three lanes of southbound traffic on Lake Shore Drive for emergency equipment at the scene.

ASHINGTON, DC -- An eminent Indian American entrepreneur and philanthropist was presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Award on January 18 in recognition of his contribution to the legacy of the great leader through his efforts in international service and civil engagement. Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh-born Frank Islam was given the annual award by Harry Johnson, president of The Memorial Foundation, for working to keep the “dream alive.” The Memorial Foundation was responsible for building the historic Martin Luther King, Jr., memorial in Washington, D.C. Noting that there is an “indelible connection” between Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, Islam said he was proud and humbled to have received the award. “King visited India in 1954, studied the non-violent movement, and patterned the protests he led after those of Gandhi. As an Indian American, I am proud and humbled to receive this award, which honors the memory of one great man directly and another indirectly,” he said. “King and Gandhi have been beacons to me in my personal life and charitable and philanthropic involvement. I have given to numerous causes to support humanitarian efforts and to advance the interests of the under-served in the world,” Islam said in his speech. Peggieliene Bartel was honored with Dorothy I. Height Leadership Award at the function. The annual awards ceremony was started in 1991 to honor the legacy of the famed civil right leader Martin Luther King Jr and civil rights and women’s rights activist Dorothy I. Height. Born in Azamgarh to a peasant father, Islam moved to the US when he was only 15 years old to become a successful entrepreneur. He bought a struggling IT company in Maryland in 1993 with $50,000 raised by mortgaging his house.
EW YORK -- Mohammed Ja f f e r, p h o t o e d i t o r o f SnapsIndia, will travel as a member of the White House Press Corps on the President’s trip to India during January-28. Harish Bhatt, a silent achiever, receiving the rare award

Mohammed Jaffer with President Barack Obama
Jaffer was honored by the New York City Council the ‘Outstanding Citizen’ award in august 2007, for his ‘exemplary services’ to media in the US and India.
arish Bhatt received the Global Visionary Award on January 10 at a function in Ahmedabad in the Gujarat state of India. The Visionary Award was started four years ago for honoring the silent achievers to inspire successful professionals, scientists, technocrats, innovators, woman achievers, entrepreneurs, NRIs etc. In the nine earlier award functions, about 60 different dignitaries were on the dais. In a year, two visionary / NRI Visionary award functions are held at Ahmedabad. A few NGOs were also projected at the visionary award functions. They include the Blind People’s Association, the Mahila Utkarsh Kendra, 108 ambulance services and the Helen Keller Institute, Mumbai.
Many Indian channels off from Chitram TV app
I
BY A STAFF WRITER
n a major breakthrough, sending a strong message to organised pirates of content in the digital space, certain members of Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) have succeeded in their efforts to remove their channels from recently launched android and ios applications of ‘Chitram TV’ on Google and Apple play stores. C h i t r a m T V i s a n I P T V / OT T service provider which has been illegally broadcasting the signals of the Indian origin channels Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom and certain other regional Indian television networks which are members of IBF) for quite some time. Recently Chitram TV launched its mobile application on android and ios devices in an attempt to widen its distribution and reach. The broadcasters took up the issue of Chitram’s illegal broadcast and Apple and Google have now removed these channels from their ios and Android platforms.
This is a major victory for the members of IBF in their fight against online piracy. These Indian broadcasters, who have joined hands to collectively fight digital piracy, are considering initiating legal proceedings against Chitram TV and other pirate platforms in multiple jurisdictions outside. None of the members of IBF (viz. Zee, MSM (Sony), Star and Viacom) has authorised Chitram TV to carry their channels on any media platform let alone digital. IBF understands that Chitram
TV continues to distribute the Indian channels via IPTV/OTT particularly outside India. IBF members have buckled up to fight the pirates like Chitram TV to preserve the integrity of their channels and content. With the rapid advent of technology enabling the dissemination of content across digital platforms, there are enormous revenue opportunities for broadcasters and other content owners. The Indian channels which are available in more than 100 countries around the world are extremely popular amongst the South Asian diaspora. All of these channels have launched their own digital platforms and mobile apps but piracy has been a major stumbling block in revenue monetisation. Isolated efforts of the broadcasters could have achieved little. Now that the Indian broadcasters stand united in their fight against digital piracy, their efforts will provide a greater impetus in the global effort to combat digital piracy.

EDINAH, IL -- This year also, the festival of Lohri was celebrated with great fanfare at Hari Om Mandir at 6 North 20 Medinah Road, Medinah, IL. The devotees witnessed a lively night of blazing bonfire. Lohri was celebrated with traditional food of Saag (mustard) and Makki (corn) ki roti and lassi (buttermilk), bonfire and songs suitable for the occasion. Lohri is distinguished to honor the day of harvesting crop. The time is considered very auspicious and special to a farmer as it rewarded him of his toil all the year round. A week before the Lohri, preparations had started, including decorating the Mandir. A nicely-decorated Punjabi Beda (Village) was created by Aarty Singla and her team giving the real feeling of being in a Punjabi pind. It was decorated with Chullah, Charkha (Spinning wheel), fresh vegetables, and sugar canes and many small decorative items creating a Punjabi village atmosphere. HEALTH CARE IS YOUR RIGHT, AND RESPONSIBILITY
C
BY A STAFF WRITER
HICAGO, IL – “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said these profound words as he spoke to the National Convention of the Medical Committee for Human Rights in Chicago in 1966. Today, almost 50 years later, quality, affordable health coverage is available to you regardless of your current health situation, income level or employment status. You may also qualify for financial help from the federal government to make things more affordable. In fact, about 80 per cent of Illinois residents who selected health insurance plans in the first month of this open enrollment period were determined eligible for financial assistance
to lower their monthly premiums. The state is dedicated to helping you find the health coverage that is right for your situation and has trained assistors who can help you through the process, and if you prefer, online tools to help you with your choices. In advance of the February 15th open enrollment deadline, Get Covered Illinois will also be hosting enrollment events and extending
UPCOMING
hours at locations across the state. “February 15 is a critical date, as it is the last day the uninsured can choose a new plan during this open enrollment period,” said Jennifer Koehler, Director of Get Covered Illinois. “We’re encouraging people not to wait until the last minute, but most importantly call for an appointment, go to our website, or head out to one of our enrollment events and get yourself the peace of mind that comes with knowing you and your family are covered.” In order to find enrollment events near you, residents can visit GetCoveredIllinois.gov or call the toll-free Help Desk at 866-311-1119. By calling the Help Desk, you can even schedule an appointment with an in-person assister at a convenient location near you. Almost everyone is required to have health insurance and the fines have increased this year.

If you don’t have coverage in 2015, you’ll likely pay the higher of these two amounts: --$325 per person for the year ($162.50 per child under 18) or 2 per cent of your yearly household income. While it’s important to understand the potential penalty for not having health coverage, the benefits of coverage far outweigh other reasons not to enroll in a health plan. All private Marketplace plans cover essential health benefits, including everything from hospitalization and laboratory services to prescription drugs, management of chronic illnesses, and routine doctor visits. Additional benefits include family planning, maternity and newborn care, mental health, outpatient services, habilitative/ rehabilitative services and devices, and pediatric care.

Men were equally affected by their partners and were more likely to quit smoking, get active, or lose weight if their partner made the same behaviour change. Wear pop colors in winter NIVEDITA, NEW DELHI
W
hen the sun is not shining bright and the gloomy winter weather makes you feel dull, add a dash of brightness and style with pop colors, balanced just right with the regular black, blue, beige and grey wardrobe items, young designers suggest. People often tend to associate darker hues with the winter season as they absorb more light and keep one warm, but in the option of layering in winter, why opt for limited colors only? “Winter is all about layering and mixing textures. Bright heavy knits teamed with a leather skirt can work as a day-night look. You can team it up with thigh-high boots to add to the glamour quotient. The same can be worn with shorts and a long oversized sweater,” Kanika Goyal, a Gen Next designer of Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015, told IANS. Priyanka Lamba, another upcoming designer, suggests that balancing contrasts - heavy with light and soft with sharp or combining luxurious sheer clothing with warm woolens to lift the heaviness - can work won-

A
new study finds that people who spend more time online or using social media do not have higher levels of stress compared to those who do not. Internet, social media and cellphone users did not have higher stress levels than those who are less tech savvy, Time reported quoting the study. The research, done by global think tank Pew Research Center, was based on a survey of 1,801 American adults. It found that women who spend more time on social media report being less stressed overall. But people who use social media
Sexual objectification ups fear of rape among women IANS, NEW YORK
T
he rampant sexual objectification of women can heighten their fears of being raped, a significant study says, adding that making sexual objectification socially unacceptable could enhance women’s sense of safety. The study by Laurel Watson from the University of MissouriKansas City, offers an explanation for why women fear face-to-face
crime more than men, despite being less likely to experience most crimes. “The findings support the theory that women may have a greater fear of crime due to the potential of also being raped during these encounters,” said Watson. The study involved 133 African American and 95 white female undergraduates. African-American women reported more sexual objectification experiences and fear of crime than white women and were
affected by greater links to psychological distress. “Women at college experience rates of rape five-to-seven times
ders in adding a style quotient. “You can pair a heavy cardigan on top and a sheer long skirt or wrap worn with leg warmers and leggings underneath,” Lamba suggested. Throwing in a Pashmina stole or shawl with an interesting print will add a dash of fashion too. “Choose a subtle pastel tone to lend a pleasing view to the eyes. The soft texture and lightness of the fabric is bound to brighten your mood this winter,” she said.
higher than women of comparable age outside college. One in five American women are raped in their lifetime,” Watson noted.
are more aware of stressful events in other people’s lives. “Learning about and being reminded of undesirable events in other people’s lives makes people feel more stress themselves,” said Keith Hampton, Rutgers University scholar and study author. Women who are hooked to Facebook were aware of 13 percent more stressful events in their close friends’ lives and aware of 14 percent more in the lives of acquaintances. Men were eight percent more aware of stressful events in their friends’ lives and six percent more aware of events in their acquaintances’ lives. Many measures such as avoiding walking alone at night or carrying a method of protection - a sharp object or pepper spray place the onus of maintaining safety on women rather than on the perpetrators of violence. Women bear the scar tissue of a socio-cultural context where rape is epidemic. “Partnerships with men in stopping violence may help transform unequal power distributions between men and women - a chief reason why violence against women occurs in the first place,” Watson concluded. The study is forthcoming in the journal Sex Roles published by Springer.

Alcohol not a good
sleeping aid Alcohol is not actually a particularly good sleep aid even though it may seem like it helps you get to sleep quicker, says the study IANS, MELBOURNE
A
study has found that drinking before sleep results in an increase in frontal alpha power in the brain, a development which is associated with disturbed sleep. For individuals who drink before sleeping, alcohol initially acts as a sedative marked by the delta frequency electroencephalogram (EEG) activity of Slow Wave Sleep (SWS) - but is later associated with sleep disruption. “People likely tend to focus on the commonly reported sedative properties of alcohol, which is reflected in shorter times to fall asleep, particularly in adults, rather than the sleep disruption that occurs later in the night,” said Christian L. Nicholas from the
University of Melbourne in Australia. For the study, the team recruited 24 participants, healthy 18- to 21-year-old social drinkers who had consumed less than seven standard drinks per week during the previous 30 days. Each participant underwent two conditions: pre-sleep alcohol as well as a placebo followed by standard polysomnography (a multi-parametric test used in the study of sleep) with comprehensive EEG recordings. Alcohol significantly increased frontal alpha power, showed the results. “The take-home message here is that alcohol is not actually a particularly good sleep aid even though it may seem like it helps you get to sleep quicker. In fact, the quality of the sleep you get is significantly altered and disrupted,” said Nicholas.
Genes decides immunity as we age IANS, WASHINGTON
A
fter studying twins, researchers from Stanford University show that our environment, more than our heredity, plays the key role in determining the state of our immune system. This is especially true as we age, the study indicates. “The idea in some circles has been that if you sequence someone’s genome, you can tell what diseases they are going to have 50 years later,” said Mark Davis, director of
Stanford’s institute for immunity, transplantation and infection. To determine this, Davis and his colleagues compared pairs of monozygotic twins - best known to
most of us as “identical” - and of dizygotic or fraternal twins. For the new study, the team recruited 78 monozygotic-twin pairs and 27 pairs of dizygotic twins from the registry of twins for research purposes at Stanford. Scientists found that in threequarters of the blood measurements, nonheritable influences - such as previous microbial or toxic exposures, vaccinations, diet and dental hygiene - trumped heritable ones when it came to accounting for differences within a pair of twins. The study is forthcoming in the journal Cell.
Coffee may reduce skin cancer risk IANS, NEW YORK
S
cientists have found that drinking four cups of coffee a day has a protective effect against skin cancer. Although the results are preliminary, lifestyle modifications with even modest protective effects may have a meaningful impact on melanoma morbidity, the researchers said. To determine if there is an association between coffee consumption and risk of cutaneous melanoma, Erikka Loftfield from the division of cancer epidemiology and genetics at the US National Cancer Insti-
tute used data from the NIHAARP Diet and Health Study. Information on coffee consumption was obtained from 447,357 non-Hispanic white subjects with a self-administered food frequency questionnaire in 1995/1996, with a median follow up of 10 years. All subjects included in the analysis were cancer-free at baseline. Overall, the highest coffee intake was inversely associated with a risk of malignant melanoma, with a 20 percent lower risk for those who consumed four cups per day or more. The study appeared in Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Your week ahead... Aries You will long to know where you stand, at least twice, possibly three or four times, between now and March. Have alternatives and make allowances for waiting games and reversals by 3rd March.
Taurus A chaotic opening to 2015 in your chosen field, industry, business or area of study is very likely. All those people who ignore astrology realise that the big decisions and firm plans are about to become real. You’re prepared.
Gemini Now you are about to see several weeks of delays, uturns and other complications affect plans, but as your horoscope has prepared you, Plan B and C are well in hand.
Cancer It is the tiny details which go wrong, which affect how a financial, business, property, charity or retail situation will turn out. A missing letter; an e-mail in your spam filter; a bank website error and so on. Be sharply aware.
Leo Wait until the first week of March before you assume anything is final or fixed with (or for) your partner. This also applies to former and potential partners – or enemies. The New Moon this week is a dress rehearsal for new beginning.
Virgo You may know astrology works, but a large number of people who affect your job, course or voluntary role do not. Consequently they have gone pounding into 2015 with an agenda full of plans, paperwork and meetings.
(January 19-25) Libra A New Moon in Aquarius signals a new beginning involving children, godchildren or young relatives – or a younger demographic. A serious sexual relationship could also enter a new phase. Allow for a zig-zag journey now.
Scorpio As you read your horoscope regularly, you will have known about the house, flat, family, household, home town or homeland issues and kept life as simple as possible. From now until March, you will see why that was a smart move.
Sagittarius January and February were never going to be the best months to buy electronic devices. You will hit issues with the internet, laptops, the post, media, publishing and all forms of communication through March.
Capricorn It is easy to assume the financial, property, charity or business decision is in the bag, but do not be fooled by Mercury Retrograde. February will change the story or hold it up, and it may not be until 3rd March that you can finally draw a line.
Aquarius Your advertising, personal appearance, reputation, internet profile and publicity will all be affected by Mercury in Aquarius, now turning backwards and forwards in a haphazard way, until the first week of March.
Pisces If you have heavenly bodies in Aquarius (check at astro.com) then a friendship or group involvement could send you backwards and forwards until 3rd March so make allowances. Allow for that state of flux.
