BRIEFS: Trump asks Clinton to release medical records WASHINGTON: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump challenged Democratic rival Hillary Clinton to release “detailed medical records” and said he would have “no problem” releasing his own. “I think that both candidates, Crooked Hillary and myself, should release detailed medical records. I have no problem in doing so! Hillary?” Trump tweeted. Trump has tried to portray Clinton as without sufficient stamina to serve as president, despite her reputation as one of the most travelled secretaries of state and profiles of her work ethics, CNN reported.

56 pc Americans don’t like Hillary Clinton: Poll WASHINGTON: US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s image is at its record low with Americans in her 25year national Hillary Clinton public life, according to a new poll. According to the Washington Post/ABC News poll on Wednesday, 56 per cent of Americans now hold unfavorable views of Clinton with 41 percent regarding the former secretary of state with favorable views, Xinhua news agency reported. epublican presidential nominee Donald Trump has stated clearly that there would be “no amnesty” for undocumented immigrants living in the US and would be deported if he was elected in the November 8 elections. “For those here illegally today who are seeking legal status, they will have one route and one route only. To return home and apply for re-entry like everybody else under the rules of the new legal immigration system that I have outlined,” Trump said while delivering his major speech on immigration in Arizona on August 31 night, “People will know that you can’t

just smuggle in, hunker down and wait to be legalized — it’s not going to work that way. Those days are over,” Trump said. He did not commit to deporting

every undocumented immigrant living in the US as he previously had, but vowed that immigrants living in the US illegally would never have a path to legal status under his presidency, CNN noted. Trump also pledged to create a “deportation task force” within the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division “focused on identifying and quickly removing the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens in America”. “Maybe they’ll be able to deport her,” Trump said, joking the task force could deport his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Just hours after meeting with the Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto earlier on August 31, Trump

reasserted his pledge to build a wall along the US-Mexico border and force Mexico to pay for the wall. “Mexico will pay for the wall. 100 per cent. They don’t know it yet but they’re going to pay for the wall,” CNN quoted Trump as saying as his supporters roared. The wall, Trump said, will be “beautiful” and “impenetrable” and will include high-tech technologies to prevent illegal border crossings. However, Trump and Pena Nieto did not discuss who would pay for the wall during the mogul’s short visit. “At the beginning of the conversation with Donald Trump I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall,” Pena Nieto tweeted.

next month. David Miliband, president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, used similar language Monday in welcoming the American milestone, adding that he hopes it is a prod to further action. “IRC encourages the White House to consider this 10,000

milestone ‘a floor and not a ceiling,’” he said. “The achievement of the 10,000 target proves what is possible, and there remains an urgent need to further strengthen US leadership in resettling refugee families — with appropriate vetting — fleeing violence and war.”

US to meet goal of admitting 10,000 Syrian refugees IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he Obama administration would reach its target of resettling 10,000 Syrian refugees by October 1, National Security Adviser Susan Rice has said. “On behalf of the President and his Administration, I extend the warmest of welcomes to each and every one of our Syrian arrivals, as well as the many other refugees resettled this year from all over the world,” Rice said on Monday, CNN reported. Rice acknowledged that there

was much more work to be done in the region but called the move a “meaningful step that we hope to build upon”. “While refugee admissions are only a small part of our broader humanitarian efforts in Syria and the region, the President understood the important message this decision would send, not just to the Syrian people but to the broader international community,” Rice said. America had previously pledged to bring at least 10,000 individuals from the war-torn country during the current fiscal year, which ends

‘RSS killed Mahatma’

Rahul Gandhi says it once again; ready to face trial IANS, NEW DELHI

C

ongress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on September 1 told the Supreme Court that he stood by his remarks blaming the RSS for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi and said he was ready to face a trial for alleged defamation of the ideological parent of the ruling BJP. Gandhi’s lawyer Kapil Sibal told the Supreme Court that the Congress Vice President stood by what he had said about the RSS and the 1948 assassination of the Mahatma. Rahul Gandhi withdrew a petition before the apex court that had sought quashing of the defamation proceeding in a Maharashtra trial court.

Domestic calls on Jio free forever: Ambani IANS, MUMBAI

T

aking the current tariff war and competition in India’s telecom space to a new level, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that domestic voice calls on the Jio network will be free forever, and unveiled a four-month introductory offer for everyone of free voice and data services beginning on September 5.

“The era of paying for voice calls is ending,” Ambani told the 39th Annual General Meeting of the company, post its listing. “No Jio customer will ever have to pay for voice calls again.” he added, devoting around an hour of his 90 minute speech to Jio. In effect, the announcements on Thursday point to a commercial launch from January 1 next year even though no specific mention was made in this regard. This was

The bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman allowed the petition to be withdrawn but did not grant Rahul Gandhi an exemption from appearing before the trial court. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activist Rajesh Kunte filed the defamation case against the Congress leader over his remarks at a 2014 election rally that people associated with the Hindutva group killed Mahatma Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order refusing to interfere with the defamation case against him. The Congress leader told the Supreme Court through his lawyer last week that he did not blame the RSS but “people associated with it” for the Mahatma’s assassination. ever capital expenditure on a single project. The Chairman said the data plans will also reflect the affordability for customers, with an effective base rate of 5 paise per MB or Rs 50 per GB. “Jio will have a base rate which is more than 90 per cent discount over the industry,” he said. He said based on the usage, the tariff could go to as low as Rs 25 per GB. He said the free domestic voice calls will also come with free roaming while international ones too will be affordable. “We Indians have come to appreciate and applaud Gandhigiri. Now, we can all do ‘Data-giri’, which is an opportunity for every Indian to do unlimited good things with unlimited data.”

BRIEFS India dismisses news report on Sushma NEW DELHI: The External Affairs Ministry described as “totally false” a report carried by an Iranian news website which, citing an Indian media outlet, quoted Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj as saying that China should be cautious of a visit by Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. “The report is completely false and baseless,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup stated when contacted by IANS. “EAM has given no such interview, nor has she made any such comment,” he tweeted. The Iranian report on Alalam.ir came ahead of Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad’s visits to Pakistan, China and Japan. Citing the Hindustan Times Indian media outlet, it quoted Sushma Swaraj as saying that the Crown Prince’s visit was of no strategic concern and that Chinese officials be advised to be cautious of the “US-backed visit”. When contacted, Hindustan Times denied carrying any such report.

Kejriwal removes his social welfare minister NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal removed his Social Welfare Minister Sandeep Kumar, saying that he had received an “objectionable” CD on him and there cannot be any compromise with propriety in public life. “Received “objectionable” CD of minister Sandeep Kumar. AAP stands for propriety in public life that can’t be compromised. Removing him from Cabinet with immediate effect,” Kejriwal tweeted.

SC quashes Singur land acquisition for Tata Nano IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n a set back to the Tatas, the Supreme Court set aside the land acquired by the previous Left Front government in West Bengal for the Nano car plant, saying due processes and procedures were not followed. The land was acquired in 2006 for the car project, which was vehemently protested by the Trinamool Congress — currently in power in the state with Mamata Banerjee as Chief Minister. Eventually, the project was shifted to Sanand in Gujarat. Saying that the eight-point formulated by the bench in dealing with the appeals have been answered by separate opinions, the order by the bench of Justice V. Gopal Gowda and Justice Arun Mishra said: “However, we concur

on the question of quashing the impugned acquisition proceedings and reliefs to be granted to the

land owners/cultivators.” While allowing the appeals, the court set aside the January 18,

2008 judgement of the Calcutta High Court. The order said that the compensation that has already

been paid to the land owners/cultivators “shall not be recovered by the state government as they have been deprived of the occupation and enjoyment of their lands for the last ten years”. It further said: “The landowners/cultivators who have not withdrawn the compensation are permitted to withdraw the same which is in deposit either with the Land Acquisition Collector or the Court.” Directing that restoration of the possession of land to the landowners/cultivators within 12 weeks from the date of receipt of the copy of the judgment and order, the court directed West Bengal Survey Settlement Department to conduct a survey and identify respective portions of land which needs to be restored to the respective landowners/cultivators.

THE WAY TO WIN

Kashmir’s heartsand minds

India must embrace these values not merely to win the hearts of young Kashmiris but all Indians ARNAB N. SENGUPTA

I

n this age of bloody bomb attacks on soft targets ranging from wedding parties in Turkey to tourist towns in Thailand, the turmoil in Kashmir is a ticking bomb the Indian government cannot afford to avert its gaze from, even if the international community thinks this is none of its business. As parts of the valley remain curfew-bound more than a month after the killing of Hizbul Mujahedeen commander Burhan Wani on July 8, reports of severe pellet injuries to eyes and deaths of civilians in clashes with security personnel have been jostling for attention internationally with news from Middle East war zones. That India has been spared an al-Qaeda or Islamic State-inspired

attack so far is hardly a signal that the danger has passed, given the pervasive use of themes of Sunni Muslim suffering and victimhood in transnational terrorist propaganda. For better or worse, the ferment in Kashmir has provided fresh proof that the desire for self-determination and sense of alienation among the valley’s Muslims greatly outweigh their periodic infatuation with the ballot box. Under the circumstances, there are broadly two possible scenarios that do not entail moral compromises that could undermine India’s democratic reputation in the eyes of the world: First, to win the war of ideas by promising the youth of Kashmir a bright future as fellow Indians within the current arrangement of autonomy.

Second, to initiate a civil dialogue in good faith with all the stakeholders in the Kashmir dispute. The second scenario may seem

To initiate a civil dialogue in good faith with all the stakeholders in the Kashmir dispute. premature and, as yet, unthinkable to a majority of Indians, who have valid reasons to worry about national security were the strategic region to be granted the freedom to turn

potentially into another difficult neighbor. But the first scenario, for its part, begs the big question as to whether our messy, secular democracy, led at present by an avowedly Hindu nationalist party, can really offer Kashmir’s Muslim population a road-map of hope so that they may be, just may be, persuaded to stay within the union in the theoretical instance of a referendum. The answer is a heavily qualified yes. But how? By demonstrating that India is ready to embrace all the values of modernity: respect for civil rights; free speech and regulated

markets; sustainable development; equal-opportunity policies; bureaucratic efficiency and accountability; religious tolerance and secularism; civic discipline; and 21st century global social norms. Swift delivery of justice, fair enforcement of law and merit-based hiring policies should ideally complete the picture of India’s transformation. India must embrace these values not merely to win the hearts and minds of young Kashmiris but all Indians, be they privileged caste or backward caste, young or old, male or transgender, Muslim or Zoroastrian, Malayali or Assamese.

Weeds, less water could spell death for Sukhna Lake JAIDEEP SARIN

C

handigarh’s famous landmark, the Sukhna Lake, is fighting for survival. With weeds having spread over more than half of the man-made water body and the water level dropping drastically, the lake today is a far cry from its glorious past. The lake complex, which attracts hundreds of visitors,

tourists, regular morning and evening walkers, fitness freaks and even lovelorn couples, presents a picture of neglect. It has already shrunk by nearly one-third of its original size. Even though this year’s monsoon season is at its fag end, the lake is hardly close to its full capacity. Against a maximum water storage capacity of 1,167 feet (above mean sea level), the water level stands at only 1,154

feet. In the recent past, the water level fell to such an extent that the dry bed of the lake is visible in many parts. Such is the state of affairs that the Punjab and Haryana High Court has now intervened and directed the Chandigarh administration to list immediate steps to save the lake that has the picturesque Kasauli hills of the lower Himalayas as its backdrop. Following an inspection of the

lake and its catchment areas by two judges of the High Court, Justice A.K. Mittal and Justice Ramendra Jain, along with officers of the Chandigarh administration, lawyers and concerned citizens of the city earlier this month, the High Court, which is hearing public interest litigation (PIL) on the neglect of the lake, has directed the authorities to reach out to the people and seek suggestions to save the lake.

“In our opinion, it is considered appropriate that all the stakeholders and all the persons interested in the public interest litigation may submit their suggestions to the amicus curiae within three weeks from today and the amicus curiae is requested to compile the same within next two weeks thereafter,” the court directed. The suggestions have to be submitted to the amicus curiae, lawyer Tanu Bedi.

PBD to be held in Bengaluru

The participants can register themselves through the portal that also gives all the information and details about the event to be held from January 7 to 9 IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he 14th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) will be held in Bengaluru January 7 to 9, 2017, and around 3,000 people are likely to participate in the event, it was announced this week. Launching a new logo and a portal for the three-day event here, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told a press conference that format of the annual function has been changed and the event will now be “result-oriented” instead of a cultural function. “The format has been changed. The event will now be result-oriented,” she said. The participants can register themselves through the portal that also gives all the information and details about the event. The regis-

Gupta family in Africa wants to sell all shares CAPE TOWN: Implicated in a corruption scandal, the wealthy Indian Gupta family this week announced its intention to sell all of its shareholding in South Africa by the end of the year. “We are already in discussions with several international prospective buyers and will soon be in a position to make further announcements,” Xinhua quoted the family as saying. “We believe that this decision is in the best interests of our business, the country and our colleagues,” said a statement. With huge business interests in South Africa and close ties with President Jacob Zuma, the Gupta family has been accused of “state capture” by influencing Zuma in the appointment of cabinet ministers. The family, however, denied the accusation. Following the scandal that rocked South Africa, the family decided to step down from all executive and non-executive positions in all their South African business in April 2016. Ever since, the local management team has grown the Gupta’s businesses from strength to strength, with turnover and profits showing good growth and more jobs created, said the statement. “As a family, we now believe that the time is right for us to exit our shareholding of the South African businesses which we believe will benefit our existing employees and lead to further growth in the businesses,” it said.

tration fee has been reduced this time and fixed as $100 for the January 9 event, she said.

The main function of the event will be on January 9 that would see a participative session with the

diaspora. There would also be a Youth PBD on January 7. Sushma Swaraj said that Prime

Minister Narendra Modi’s fervent engagement with the Indian diaspora has had an impact and the number of participants in this year’s event has gone up. “Till a few years ago, the number of participants was in hundreds. Last year it was around 2,500 and this year we are expecting around 3,000 people and the actual number may go up,” she said. The participants can withdraw with full refunds by December 7 this year, the Minister said. Karanataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said his state was keen to host the event and was preparing to make it “a huge success”. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated in India each year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of India.

No difference between Hindus and Muslims in Trinidad, says Author Aliyyah Eniath IANS, NEW DELHI

D

ebuting with a book that gives voice to the lives of people of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, author Aliyyah Eniath believes there is a strong need to convey the stories of the diaspora to the world. People in this Caribbean nation — where nearly 40 per cent of the 1.3 million population is of Indian origin — “still tightly hold on to a lot of cultural practices. Diwali is a huge festival which is a week-long celebration in Trinidad. There is no difference between Hindus and Muslims back home. Conflicts between India and Pakistan do not affect our lives”, Eniath stated. “It is very important that we get our stories to the world. We have so many stories to tell. It is important that our voices are heard, that the world should know about us too because India has a huge population and is a significant part of the world population. And it is not all about American writing — it should be about Indian writing too,” Eniath, the author of “The Yard” (Speaking Tigers, Rs 350, pp 272) told IANS in an interview during a visit here. Although Eniath was born and bought up in Trinidad and Tobago, her roots lie in Uttar Pradesh. As an author, she believes it is “unfortunate” that publishers in Britain and the US are not too keen on stories about the Indian diaspora. But the Indian publishing industry

Aliyyah Eniath, author of “The Yard”. (Photo: IANS)

is doing its bit to fill the gaps. “When I got the offer from the Indian publishing house, I could not refuse as I see India as a big platform for diaspora writers,” added Eniath, who is director of a lifestyle magazine. For her, the book and its characters are a medium for telling the world how the diaspora has been liv-

ing in Trinidad and Tobago. “My book focuses on the experience of one family living in The Yard where the characters are compelled to live together. Many Indians living in Trinidad share similar experiences as well. I think that it does convey the emotional and family bonds as well as the culture, especially the Muslims, about whom I

have written and how they have different views on religion,” Eniath explained. Talking about taking Indian characters abroad, Eniath said no book had earlier focused on the East Indians. “Authors like Jhumpa Lahiri are writing on the immigrants’ experience, but in Trinidad and Tobago, it is different as we really don’t feel like immigrants since we have been there from the start. So it has always been a BritishIndian-African community. “The writing is a bit different, but is sort of trendsetting because I don’t think such a book has been written before with such a strong T&T and Indian connection. So I think it is a bit new as well,” said the author who wanted to become a writer ever since she read “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. Choosing Indian characters was inevitable as it is “easier to relate to characters based on my experience” she said, adding: “I grew up in the close network of an Indian family in Trinidad and Tobago where everyone was involved in everyone’s life. I wanted to write about the extended Indian family.” “I am a huge fan of love stories with happy endings, but like them with some layers to it. Mine is a little different; it is mainly a love story but it is also heart-breaking. I do like very much to write about love hoping that it will connect to readers in a big way and it is also what I love to write about,” said the author.

Two-thirds of Brazil’s 81 senators, or 54 votes, were needed to remove Rousseff from power. First US commercial flight in 50 years lands in Cuba SANTA CLARA (CUBA): The first regularly scheduled commercial flight between the United States and Cuba since 1961 landed on Wednesday at this central city’s Abel Santamaria airport at 10.57 a.m. local time (2.57 GMT). JetBlue Flight 387 took off at 10:06 a.m. local time from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with tourists, journalists and US authorities, including Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, on board, an event broadcast live by US English and Spanish-language media. The 220seat Airbus A320’s arrival in Cuba marks a new milestone in the diplomatic thaw between the former Cold

War enemies, which in December 2014 announced the start of the process of normalizing relations. Foxx told members of the media, including EFE, on board the plane that the flight was a tangible example of the Obama administration’s efforts to mend decades of animosity. The plane landed in Santa Clara ahead of schedule despite a 20-minute delay in Fort Lauderdale and, just as occurred at take-off, was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute. Foxx was the first person off the aircraft and was welcomed at the bottom of the steps by Cuba’s Deputy Transportation Minister, Eduardo Rodriguez.

Kerry to head for China G-20 from India

ndia is a key strategic partner of the US with the war against terror and stability of the Indian Ocean Region in focus, US Secretary of State John Kerry said this week as he interacted with students at the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here. Kerry, who reached Delhi early this week, faced Delhi’s rain woes for the second time, as his motorcade had to negotiate a waterlogged road right in front of the institute. He, however, chose to joke about it and asked the audience in the almost packed IIT hall if they had come by boats. “I don’t know if you came in boats or amphibious vehicles of some kind,” Kerry asked, provoking laughter. His program to visit a few holy places in the national capital was, meanwhile, canceled even as the American Embassy preferred to say it was “postponed” because of the torrential rain. In a lighter vein again, Kerry also said that the Computer Science program at the IIT was so competitive that those rejected here were taken by institutes like MIT. At the same time, he chose the platform to send out a strong message to China asking it to abide by an international tribunal’s deci-

sion on claims to some reefs and atolls in the South China Sea, citing India as an example. “India’s decision to accept an international tribunal’s judgment over its maritime border with Bangladesh actually stands apart from other choices made by other countries,” Kerry said. “It is a model how a potentially dangerous dispute can be resolved peacefully, including the South China Sea where the US continues to call on China and the Philippines to abide by the tribunal’s

recent decision which is final and legally binding on both parties,” Kerry added. Beijing has rejected the decision by The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration over strategic reefs and atolls in the South China Sea. The judgment was in favor of the Philippines. He also mentioned Pakistan and stressed it needs to work more against the terror network there. “I have had many conversations with the Pakistan President, Prime Minister, particularly Prime Minister (Nawaz Sharif), about how to

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State John Kerry has canceled his return to Washington scheduled, and will extend his stay in India before leaving for China to join President Barack Obama at the G-20 Summit. US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in his daily press briefing here on August 31 that Kerry's official schedule for the next couple of days was "still forming up" citing logistical reasons. After co-chairing the Second USIndia Strategic and Commercial Dia-

focus on sanctuaries in the western part of the country, how to deal with the Haqqani network, deal with Lashkar-e-Taiba,” Kerry said. “It is clear that Pakistan has work to do in order to push harder against its indigenous groups that are engaged in extremist terrorist activities.... “And it must work with us to help clear sanctuaries that are affecting relationship between Pakistan and India and also our ability to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan,” said Kerry.

logue with Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday, Kerry addressed a town hall meeting at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, met with Indian opposition political party leaders and visited the American embassy school before calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss climate change issues and the deepening US-India partnership. Following heavy rains, Kerry postponed his scheduled visits to the Sisganj Gurdwara, the Jama Masjid and a Hindu temple in New Delhi.

He emphasized that India has a larger role in resolving global conflicts. “Rising India will play a very critical role in resolving global challenges,” Kerry said adding that the challenges included extremism, terrorism, extreme poverty, uneven and unsustainable growth, among others. In his around 40-minutelong speech, which was followed by a 30-minute-long questionand-answer session, Kerry also welcomed the passage of the bill on Goods and Services Tax and bankruptcy law in Parliament.

‘Pak must dismantle safe terror havens’ IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndia and the US have reasserted the urgent necessity for Pakistan to dismantle safe havens for terrorist groups and criminal networks and said there can be no difference between good terrorists and bad terrorists. “Secretary (John) Kerry and I discussed at length the issue of terrorism, which is the key challenge to the international community, and the foremost threat to international peace and security,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in a joint press interaction with US Secretary of State John Kerry, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman and US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker after the conclusion of the Second India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue here. “I am happy to note that there was a meeting of minds on this issue,” she said. problem of cross-border terrorism that India and the larger region faces from Pakistan. “We both agreed that nations must not maintain double standards, such as the categorization of good and bad terrorists, nor must they act as sanctuaries and safe havens for terrorist organizations,” she stated. “We reaffirmed the urgent necessity for Pakistan to dismantle

safe havens for terrorists and criminal networks including Lashkar-eToiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad and D Company. Secretary Kerry and I also agreed on the need for Pakistan to do more to bring the perpetrators of the 2008 Mumbai and 2016 Pathankot terrorist attacks to justice quickly.” Swaraj said they also discussed the need to strengthen the international legal regime to counter ter-

rorism. Kerry said the US continued to support all efforts to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai and Pathankot terror attacks to justice. “Let me be clear... United States continues to support all efforts to bring the perpetrators of Mumbai and the Pathankot attacks to justice and we cannot and will not make distinction between good and bad terrorism,” he stated

“Terror is terror no matter where it comes from and who carries it out.” Kerry also said that the two countries have agreed to exchange “terrorist screening information” to deepen cooperation in designating terrorist groups at the UN. To a question on resumption of India-Pakistan talks, Swaraj said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Pakistan in December 2015 “and we got Pathankot in return”. “Talks and terrorism cannot go together,” she reiterated. Kerry also said that the US, India and Afghanistan would hold a trilateral meeting in the UN General Assembly session next month in which Indian investments in major Afghan infrastructure projects would be discussed. Attacks by the Taliban on Afghan territory from across the border in Pakistan would also come up for discussion, he said. Sushma Swaraj also thanked the US for its continued support for India’s membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group and a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

hen the world celebrates the proclamation of Mother Teresa as a ‘Saint’ on September 4, by Pope Francis in the Vatican, a church in Maharashtra will also have its own memorable celebrations. On that day, ‘The Blessed Mother Teresa Church’ in Virar town here, around 60 km north of Mumbai, will be re-christened as ‘St. Mother Teresa Church’ amidst pious celebrations for the lady who touched the hearts of millions of poor in India with her selfless charitable works. The renaming ceremony will bring alive the cherished memories of Mother Teresa’s only visit here in April 1986 for the people of VasaiVirar and will make it perhaps the

Preparations are currently under way to make the upcoming historic event in the Vatican and in Vasai Diocese unforgettable. Colorful decorations, multi-colored lights, banners, hoardings and flowers shall be seen in and around the Christian pockets in the Diocese, with a population of 137,000. Kerala most sought after destination for 2016-17 THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A leading online review platform mytourreview.com has selected Kerala as the place to visit in 201617. The website will now promote Kerala among global tour operators and travellers. Kerala Tourism Director U.V. Jose said ‘God’s Own Country’ has always benefitted from positive word-of-mouth reviews from international travellers. Jose said: “Online platforms are an influential and fair tool that tourists use to spread the word about Kerala, which has again topped as a must visit destination.” The website was launched last year on World Tourism Day (September 27) and now has 500 global operators. Of 300 reviews received by mytourreview.com, 80 per cent of the traveller reviews were on Kerala based tour operators, which prompted them to pick the state for the campaign.

It’ll be impossible to play Dhanush, Rajinikanth will grandad in biopic: Jr. NTR team up for ‘Kabali 2’ IANS, CHENNAI

ctor Dhanush’s next production venture featuring superstar Rajinikanth will reportedly be a sequel to Tamil action-drama Kabali, according to a well-placed source. Dhanush shared on his Twitter page that he will be collaborating

with Kabali director Pa Ranjith and Rajinikanth on a new project. “It’s going to be Kabali 2. Dhanush has taken permission from producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu to continue Kabali franchise with the second part. The project will only materialize next year, after the release of 2.o in the summer,” a source close to Dhanush told IANS.

Sonakshi fought like man in Akira CHENNAI: As much as actor Jr. NTR aspires to star in the biopic on his legendary grandfather Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR), he feels it will be extremely challenging to replicate the persona of the celebrated actor and politician onscreen. “I want to star in the biopic on my grandfather, but I’m too afraid because it’ll be impossible to play him. His aura, persona and charisma can’t be recreated onscreen, no matter how hard one tries. I know for a fact that his will be a very inspiring story,” NTR told IANS in an interview. Having successfully sustained in the industry for nearly two decades, the 33-year old star, with successful

films such as Student No. 1, Simhadri, Yamadonga, Brindavanam, Temper and Naanaku Prematho to his credit, has veered away from the star system. “If I want to be remembered, I want to be known as a good actor. As times change, we as actors need to adapt with it. I like to be challenged as an actor, allowing myself to take up diverse roles. Even audiences get tired of watching their stars in similar roles over and over again,” he said. “If my fans only want me to do a certain kind of films, then ‘Naanaku Prematho’ would have failed miserably. They’ve entrusted me with the freedom to select good and different scripts,” he explained.

F

ilmmaker A.R. Murugadoss, who describes the experience of directing Sonakshi Sinha in an action role in forthcoming thriller Akira as different, says he made the actress fight like a man. “I’ve so far only worked with male stars in the lead, but the experience of directing a heroine (Sonakshi) in the titular role, in an action-based script, was very different. It’s something I’ll cherish for a long time,” Murugadoss told IANS in an interview. In Akira, which releases in cinemas on September 2, Sonakshi will be seen in an action-packed avatar, and her physical transformation stunned Murugadoss. “She started training for the role

seven to eight months before we went on the floors with the film, and she had completely detached herself from other projects. She learnt martial arts, cut her hair short, and transformed herself

from head to toe,” he said. “When most heroines are busy decking up, hopping from one set to the other, singing duets with different heroes, Sonakshi was learning to fight like a man,” he said.

The first few visuals show stars Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Fawad Khan and Ranbir Kapoor locked together in a complicated relationship. There is love, heartache, joy and sorrow all tied together in the teaser, which makes it clear that the film delves upon complexities of

unrequited love. The film traces journey of Ranbir’s character as an aspiring singer and his relationships at different points of time. The over one-minute video

starts with Ranbir singing the title track, and goes on to narrate the bond that Ranbir’s character shares with Anushka and Aishwarya. Karan Johar is returning to direction after a hiatus of four years. And the director, who picks his camera to frame different emotions be it love, admiration or betrayal into his films, seems to have panned his camera to capture the emotional story of one-side lovers. Pakistani actor Fawad adds drama to the teaser with his brief appearance. He sports a grungy and disheveled look.

Felt wonderful to perform in US

MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Sidharth Malhotra, who recently toured the US for Dream Team dance tour, is more than overwhelmed by the positive feedback he received. He says it was a memorable experience. His performance and dance moves made waves in the six cities -- Houston, Oakland, Orlando, Hoffman Estates, Inglewood and Newark -- he performed in along with others like Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra and Varun Dhawan. The tour was held earlier this month. His performances with Katrina Kaif and Alia made his fans slay and groove to the hit dance numbers “Kaala chashma” and “Kar gayi chull”.

Flying Jatt”, is the story of the local superhero of the same name. Apart from the name, there is nothing original about the film. The character, chiselled on the lines of the DC Comics fictional character Superman, is an Indianised version of the superhero which includes his traits and costume. It is the story of a reluctant martial arts teacher, Aman Dhillon (Tiger Shroff ) who is forced to fight a prominent and powerful

Clintons pay tribute to Pramukh Swami

BY A STAFF WRITER ARTLET T, IL -- Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former US President Bill Clinton have conveyed their sincerest condolences on the passing of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Hillary Clinton wrote: “Pramukh Swami’s deep sense of devotion led him to spend his life revitalizing communities in need…His example helped his followers find more harmony – both with others and within themselves. And we hope that humanity will build upon his legacy for generations to come.” In her statement, she Clinton specifically highlighted the core reason that millions around the world had called Pramukh Swami Maharaj their spiritual guru: “Pramukh Swami didn’t just teach virtues – he lived them every day.” Hillary Clinton fondly recalled that President Clinton was “fortunate enough to visit with his Holiness, both here in the United States and at the Akshardham

B

Mandir in Gujarat.” Ex-President Clinton first met Pramukh Swami Maharaj on October 4, 2000, beginning a unique friendship with the late Guru of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. At this first meeting, he learned about BAPS’s humanitarian, spiritual, cultural, educational, environmental, and medical activities. Just two days before the Clintons

offered their condolences, millions of tearful devotees had gathered for the cremation rites of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, one of India’s most commonly-known Hindu ascetics revered by Hindus around the world. The fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha passed away on August 13.

Vandals burn down Indian’s gas station BY A STAFF WRITER ILWAUKEE, WI -- A gas station owned by Indian American Pakhar Singh stood in ruins in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on August 15 after the police in the Midwestern city faced off with protesters for two days following the death of a 23-yearold black man, who officials say was armed. The gas station of Singh, who has lived and worked in Milwaukee for 37 years, was among the businesses destroyed. Sylville K. Smith, 23, was shot on August 13 after what the police said was a brief foot chase when he fled a traffic stop. The police say body-camera video from the black officer who shot him shows that Smith was holding a handgun and had turned toward the officer. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner said on Aug. 19 that Smith was shot once in the chest and once in the arm. A few hours after Smith’s death, a

protest on the city’s largely-black north side erupted into violence. The unrest left several businesses burned and assorted others with damage that federal officials said could amount to several million dollars.

Singh said his bond with the city was why he had no plans to leave Milwaukee, even after vandals looted and burned down his station a couple blocks away from the shooting.

Janmastami and Hare Krishna Movement’s 50th Anniversary celebration at ISKCON BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Janmastami, the Appearance Day or birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, will be celebrated in the Chicago area on August 25 from 6 PM to Midnight at the Hare Krishna Temple in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Today, Janmastami is celebrated by people of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds across the world. However, Krishna’s global fame has only fully developed within the past few decades. A big reason for his expanding popularity is the Hare Krishna movement, which celebrates its own 50th Anniversary this year. The

C

International Society for Krishna Consciousness

(ISKCON) began in New York City’s lower east side in 1966, when a 70 year-old swami from India set up a storefront temple there. ISKCON’s founder, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, taught that the path to happiness was not found in material pursuits but in simple living, high thinking, and in awakening love of God—Lord Krishna. Janmastami will be celebrated at ISKCON temples around the world—and in Chicago at the ISKCON Temple in Chicago, IL —with a variety of drama performances, live music, sacred chants, adoration or darshan of sacred images in the temples, reading sacred texts, and a free vegetarian feast.

BY A STAFF WRITER AROL STREAM, IL -- Chicago Art Circle on August 28 organized a three-hour Gujarati comedy show, ‘International Comedy jokes show’, by Dr. Jagdish Trivedi in Carol Stream IL. All attendees enjoyed each and every moment of his presentation. Jagdish Trivedi is a follower of the great comedian Shahbudin Rathod. Trivedi, a follower of great Gujarati comedian and humorist Shahbuddin Rathod, said he was inspired to create jokes from everday life which he observed carefully. LONDON: Atrial fibrillation — a common type of abnormal heart rhythm which leads to a stroke — can now be easily detected with your smartphone using a low-cost application, a recent research has found. According to the study, published in the journal European Society of Cardiology, a team of researchers from University of Turku, Finland, has developed a low-cost app that uses the smartphone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to detect atrial fibrillation with existing hardware. “Atrial fibrillation is a dangerous medical condition present in two per cent of the global population and accounting for up to seven million strokes per year,” said lead author Tero Koivisto, a vice-director of the Technology Research Centre, University of Turku, Finland. Around 70 per cent of strokes due to atrial fibrillation can be avoided with pre-emptive medication. However, atrial fibrillation often occurs randomly on/off and is difficult to detect by visiting a doctor.

Be warned, as researchers have identified several species of bacteria in these products that can increase the risk of cancer, lung infections, diarrhoea and vomiting. The study found tobacco products contains bacillus licheniformis and bacillus pumilus that could potentially cause inflammation of the lungs, as well as many other

opportunistic infections. “Some species have been identified as causative agents in spice-related outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting. Additionally, they produce a mild toxin which, in large quantities could cause illness,” said Steven Foley, research microbiologist at the National Centre for Toxicological Research, US Food and Drug Administration.

To determine dietary risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, the researcher reviewed journal literature. Besides, an ecological study was also conducted using Alzheimer’s disease prevalence data from 10 countries including India along with dietary supply data 5, 10, and 15 years before the prevalence data.

hantanu and Nikhil showcased a separate line of menswear and women’s wear at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive 2016 and it was a double dose of ultra-glam fashion when Riteish Deshmukh and Malaika Arora turned showstopper for the designers. Drama, sensational colours and mind-blowing embellishments were the mainstay of the collection that was romantically titled “The Matador’s Mistress”. Their were couture ball gowns, wafted down the runway leaving the women in the audience speechless with shades of flame red, burnt blue, emerald green and dark plum played with the stunning intricate tonal and rich gold embroidery. MUMBAI: Designer Ashish Soni, who will celebrate his silver jubilee in the fashion industry next year, has noticed an increased influx of foreign brands in the country. While he feels it’s creating awareness about global trends amongst Indians, he says Indian designers will always have an edge over them as they understand their consumers better. Known for his sharply refined and simple sense of aesthetics, Soni has given chic and elegant suit styles for both the genders.

Kangana a true fashion chameleon: Tahiliani MUMBAI: Ace designer Tarun Tahiliani has hailed actress Kangana Ranaut’s fashion sense by describing her a true fashion chameleon. “I call Kangana a true fashion chameleon because as a chameleon changes its colour, Kangana also does. She is one of those few people who can change their look and vibe. A very few people can do that. That’s the most unique thing about her,” he said on the sidelines of the ongoing Lakme

Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive 2016. The National award winner was the showstopper for the designer, whose collection was inspired by renowned sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee’s creations. Kangana donned one of his creations - a black satin skirt, paired with a black top and an embellished jacket. The actress said: “I am very happy to be a part of the show. I love this outfit. This is a ready to wear and I feel it is prefect for working women like us.”

Carol Gracias makes comeback on ramp IANS, MUMBAI

S

he left a lasting impact when she walked the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) SummerResort 2016 ramp flaunting her baby bump in a sari by Gaurang Shah. At the ongoing Winter-Festive 2016 edition here on Friday, the model returned to the ramp after becoming a mother for the same designer. It’s exciting, she said. Glowing in a handloom sari draped beautifully with a bindi shining on her forehead, Carol told IANS: “It’s exciting to come back.

This is my walk post baby birth and it’s just been a month and a week (since the delivery).” She was blessed with a son. “I don’t know how people do a 9 to 5 job leaving the kid behind. Indian women work really hard to run their families,” Carol said.

Innovation was the key on Day Four of LFW IANS, MUMBAI

A

jay Kumar, Asa Kazingmei and Armaan Randhawa opened Day Four of Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) Winter/Festive 2016 with innovative fashion. Kumar gave a fashionable ode to Benaras with a vibrant collection called Banaras - The Golden Dawn of Time Eternal. The colours that lit up the ramp under the bright arc lights ranged from marigold yellow, green betel leaf, red sindoor, aqua and black. Print power was at its peak. While the lotus was Kumar’s base motif last season, the prints for the winter/festive 2016 look were inspired by temples, skyline, waves of the

Holy Ganges, the marigold and of course the lotus. Geometric floral blocking with print-on-print was cleverly created to make a striking colourful story.

The designer worked his creative skills with khadi silk, handmade cotton, gold tissue silk, luxe cotton and linen. When it came to masculine and feminine silhouettes, he

allowed his imagination to run unrestricted. Wrap over trousers were perfect with long tunic shirts, cowl shirts and cape coats looked amazing. The kilt was a great introduction in menswear. Style wise for men, Kumar offered long jackets with wide lapels, front cowl kurta, high waist pants and wrap shirt. The showstopper Rohit Khandelwal, Mr. World 2016, looked dapper in a printed cropped double breasted orange jacket, red shirt, white kurta and pants. When it comes to fearless fashion, not many can compete with Asa Kazingmei whose EOIO (Each On Its Own) collection was a daring and dramatic offering.

Lifestyle changes can cut cancer risk

According to WHO estimates, the number of people diagnosed with diabetes in India doubled to 63 million in 2013 from 32 million in 2000 GOKUL BHAGABATI, NEW DELHI

I

t may sound exaggerated but the unprecedented growth in Type-2 diabetes over the past 15 years and the deadly rise of cancer have a few common — some even modifiable — risk factors linked to how we lead our daily lives, health experts say. These include age, sex, obesity, physical activity, diet, alcohol and smoking. “In 80-90 per cent cases of cancer occurrence, environmental factors, particularly lifestyle disorders, are responsible, which also account for higher number of diabetes cases,” Anil Kumar Dhar, oncologist at Gurgaon’s Columbia

However, atrial fibrillation often occurs randomly on/off and is difficult to detect by visiting a doctor.

re you addicted to smokeless tobacco products like plain chewable tobacco leaves, khaini, pan masala, zarda and gutka? Be warned, as researchers have identified several species of bacteria in these products that can increase the risk of cancer, lung infections, diarrhoea and vomiting. The study found tobacco products contains bacillus licheniformis and bacillus pumilus that could potentially cause inflammation of the lungs, as well as many other

opportunistic infections. “Some species have been identified as causative agents in spice-related outbreaks of diarrhoea and vomiting. Additionally, they produce a mild toxin which, in large quantities could cause illness,” said Steven Foley, research microbiologist at the National Centre for Toxicological Research, US Food and Drug Administration.

asthma and allergic rhinitis,” said lead researcher David Hill from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in the US. The study is a retrospective analysis of the electronic health records of more than one million urban and s u b u r b a n children in the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Care Network from 2001 to 2015.

Traditional Indian diet cuts Alzheimer’s risk IANS, NEW YORK

W

hile consumption of meat, sweets, and highfat dairy products that characterize a Western diet significantly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, traditional Indian diet is associated with reduced risk of the most common form of dementia, says a study. “Although the traditional Mediterranean diet is associated with about half the risk for Alzheimer’s disease of the Western diet, the traditional diets of countries such as India, Japan, and

Nigeria, with very low meat consumption, are associated with an additional 50 per cent reduction in

risk of Alzheimer’s disease,” said study author William B Grant from Sunlight, Nutrition and

Health Research Center in San Francisco, California. Fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy products, legumes, and fish are associated with reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease, the study said.
