KNOWLEDGE OF THE SELF (ATMA-GNAN) is the final goal of all seekers. Without this Knowledge, there is no liberation. In the gnanvidhi ceremony, the belief that "I am this body-mind complex" is destroyed and the conviction that "I am pure soul" is eternally established within. This awareness will blossom into deeper and subtler levels as one follows the simple guidelines that are given to nourish, protect and accelerate this newly revealed knowledge of the self. Edison, NJ

Modi-Obama summit in September Narendra Modi expresses his keenness to give a push to the flagging Indo-US ties and has accepted President Obama’s invite to visit Washington IANS, NEW DELHI
N
early a decade after it denied him a visa and blacklisted him, the US is practically preparing to roll out the red carpet for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is set to hold a summit meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington in September-end this year. According to official sources, Modi has expressed his keenness to give a push to the flagging Indo-U.S. ties and has accepted Obama’s invite to visit Washington. The U.S. denied Modi a visa in 2005 over the Gujarat riots, in which over a 1,000 people, mostly Muslims were killed. Modi was Gujarat chief minister when the riots occurred and the US State Department invoked a little-known US law passed in 1998 that makes foreign officials responsible for “severe violations of religious freedom” ineligible for visas. After the swearing-in of Modi, who led the BJP to a spectacular victory in the general election, Obama in a message vowed to work closely together with the new Indian prime minister “for years to come”. Obama was quick to acknowledge Modi’s “resounding” victory
in the election and extended an invitation to him to visit Washington — effectively ending the visa ban on him. Obama is believed to be keen to patch up the damage to Indo-US ties as fast as possible. His meeting with Modi will be the second within the span of a year with an Indian prime minister. He had met Manmohan Singh in September last year during the former prime minister’s visit to Washington enroute to the UN General Assembly. Modi, whose move to reach out to South Asian neighbors during his swearing-in has been lauded, gave an indication of his foreign policy thoughts in interviews before coming to power. He had said that individual incidents should not be allowed to cloud bilateral relations — an apparent reference to the visa ban on him by the U.S. Bilateral ties, which had seen a cooling off during the latter years of UPA-II, suffered a setback with the handcuffing and strip search of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade last year for alleged visa fraud and
WASHINGTON: The U.S. is looking forward to the first summit meeting between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reset India-U.S. ties that had gone adrift in the last days of the previous government. The U.S. was much behind its European partners in reaching out to Modi with its former U.S. ambassador to New Delhi, Nancy Powell, making the first high-level contact with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate in only February this year. But Modi led BJP’s “resounding” victory quickly ended Washington’s hesitation with Obama making a call to congratulate “candidate Modi” and invite him to the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was quick to “echo” the invitation. “As President Obama and Secretary Kerry both said, we look forward to welcoming the prime minister to Washington,” State department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters on June 5 when asked to confirm if Modi was coming in September. But “nothing to announce on timing at this point,” she said Nor did Harf “have any more details” of what would be on the agenda of the Modi-Obama summit. “We said we look forward to welcoming him,” she simply repeated. Analysts have also appreciated Modi’s quick response to Obama invite.

US excited to partner with PM Modi NEW DELHI: US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs Nisha Desai Biswal on June 9 said America was excited to partner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he represents the “hopes and aspirations” of Indians. “The United States is very excited about the opportunity ahead and the road ahead in partnership with the new government... because we see the resounding mandate with which Prime Minister Modi has come in, as the hopes and the aspirations of the Indian people.” “The United States wants to partner with India in meeting those hopes and aspirations,” Biswal said. She said US President Barack Obama was looking forward to meeting Modi. “Conversations are being worked out between our two governments. The (US) president in his first conversation with the prime minister (Modi) invited him and welcomed him to Washington. And we look forward to that at a mutually convenient date,” Biswal said. The Obama-Modi meeting is likely to take place during the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Biswal was one of the Obama administration’s first officials to go onrecord as saying that the U.S. is looking forward to working with Modi. We have dreams to fulfil: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated his government’s resolve for a ‘Clean India’.

P
rime Minister Narendra Modi in his maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on June 11 said that his government would “leave no stone unturned to fulfil” the promises outlined by President Pranab Mukherjee in his address. In his reply in the Lok Sabha to the debate on motion of thanks on the president’s address, Modi said there were many who voiced doubts if the high promises spelt out in the president’s address could be fulfilled. Giving the example of his time as Gujarat chief minister when he lived up to the promise of providing 24-
hour electricity across the state, Modi said: “It is understood that people will have doubts... But I assure this house that the path mentioned by the President, we will leave no stone unturned to fulfil them.” “For us, the president’s

Delhi court on June 9 awarded life imprisonment to 17 of the 18 policemen convicted of killing a 22-year-old MBA student in a fake shootout in Dehradun in 2009. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge J.P.S. Malik awarded life terms to 17 policemen involved in the staged gun battle and said the case did not fall in the rarest of rare category and was based on circumstantial evidence. CBI had asked for death penalty for the convicted policemen. As the judge announced the order, the victim’s father, Ravinder Pal Singh, broke down. “The convicts must be awarded death penalty for their offenses,” he told reporters. The wives of a few policemen also broke down inside the courtroom and said that court must show some leniency towards them. “Most of the policemen have young children. Who will take care of them,” one of the policemen’s wife said. The 18 policemen were charge sheeted by the CBI in connection with the Ranbir Singh case that rocked the hill state in July 2009. The policemen were arrested after
evidence showed that Ranbir, a resident of Ghaziabad, was gunned down in cold blood by the Uttarakhand Police. Following the staged shootout, the police claimed to have caught Ranbir and his companions on Mohini Road where they were allegedly “trying to commit some
address is part of tradition... The words are like a divine address and to fulfil them it will be our endeavour, and it will also inspire us to work.” While beginning his speech, Modi said it was the first time he has
come to the Lok Sabha and it was his maiden address. He asked the members to excuse him for any lapses he might make due to inexperience. The Prime Minister said that during election time they were all candidates, but
after being elected, the MPs are now “the messengers of the people’s hopes” and have to “safeguard the people’s hopes”. He reiterated his government’s resolve for a “Clean India”, and said the country should accomplish it by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. “Mahatma Gandhi laid great emphasis on cleanliness. His ashrams too focused on the same. Let us pledge we will give a ‘Clean India’ as a gift to our father of the nation on his 150th birth anniversary in 2019,” Modi said. The Prime Minister said providing houses for all by 2022 should be a “movement” and everyone should pitch in for this. “We will find the way, we need to have the dream. There will be difficulties, but we will overcome them,” he said while speaking for the first time on the floor of the Lok Sabha. President Pranab Mukherjee had said on June 9 that by the time the nation completes 75 years of its independence in 2022, every family in India will have a pucca house.

T
he World Bank projected India’s growth at 5.5 percent in fiscal 2014-15, accelerating to 6.3 percent in 201516 and 6.6 percent in 2016-17 as it urged developing countries to double down on domestic reforms. Subdued manufacturing activity and a sharp slowing of investment growth in India led to GDP growth in South Asia as a whole slowing to an estimated 4.7 percent in market price terms in calendar year 2013, the Bank said in a new report on June 11.
The growth in South Asia was 2.6 percentage points below average growth in 2003-12, the World Bank noted in its twice-yearly Global Economic Prospects report
that also lowered projections for global economic outlook. Firming global growth and a modest pickup in industrial activity should help lift South Asia’s growth to 5.3 percent in 2014, rising to 5.9 percent in 2015 and 6.3 percent in 2016, it said Most of the acceleration is localized in India, supported by a gradual pickup of domestic investment and rising global demand. The World Bank, however, cautioned that forecasts assume that reforms are undertaken to ease supply-side constraints and to improve labour productivity.

Badaun Rape: Indifference of politicians shameful Even Sydney-educated young Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has not been able to exonerate his party of a hooliganist image AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
U
ttar Pradesh is known for having sent several prime ministers — Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and now Narendra Modi — to Parliament. It is also the crucible of the composite north Indian Hindu-Muslim culture, famous for courtly etiquette which percolated down to the lower levels as well. But there is another side of Uttar Pradesh which is less salubrious. It isn’t only the traditional casteism of the Hindi belt with its inbuilt prejudice and antagonism. A part of this sectarian custom is a patriarchal mindset typical of communities which haven’t yet come to terms with the modern age with its concept of the rights of women. In recent years, a community which has come to symbolize the state’s backwardness is the one
which currently rules the state, viz. the Yadavs, described in Wikipedia as a “non-elite, pastoral” group. Being the most prominent of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), which are known for their social and educational backwardness, the Yadavs have another dubious claim to fame — that of rampant hooliganism. One of the most shocking examples of this violent streak, compounded by misogyny, was that in 1995 when the Circuit House where the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati was staying
The incident which has caused widespread outrage is the rape of two cousins by a group of men who later killed them
The Badaun incident where two minors were allegedly raped and killed later has evoked widespread condemnation.
was attacked by Samajwadi Party (SP) goons with such vehemence that she feared for her life. But Akhilesh Yadav hasn’t been successful in improving the image. Instead, the continuing incidents of rape in Uttar Pradesh have begun to attract worldwide attention, dissuading potential tourists from visiting India. The incident which has caused widespread outrage and revulsion is the rape of two cousins by a
group of men who later killed them and hanged them from a tree. The fact that the two teenagers were dalits provided further confirmation of the centuriesold animosity between the backward castes and the “untouchables”. But it isn’t only this and a number of other incidents, including a rape in Rahul Gandhi’s constituency of Amethi, which have shocked the rest of the country. No less
appalling has been the disgracefully casual attitude of the SP leaders. The most reprehensible was the attempt a few weeks ago of the septuagenarian former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to virtually exonerate rapists by saying that young men sometimes commit mistakes but they should not be given capital punishment for their offenses. That this person once aspired to be prime minister can make one shudder.
Managing bureaucracy, the Narendra Modi way Prime Minister Narendra Modi has driven home the point that the government’s work culture is archaic and we need to remove the layers in decision-making AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI
W
e are seeing the seeding of a remarkable shift and modification of some archaic structures and mechanisms in the country. These were clearly archaic, reflective of the Raj and exploitative to the extent that they enslaved the country’s population. The masters of this were none other than the bureaucracy, which had become the epitome of morally corrupt across the world.
What we are seeing is a re-look at the governance structures and rightfully so. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has driven home the point quite clearly. The core belief on which the prime minister is acting is that the central government’s work culture is archaic and we need to remove the layers that have been created
in decision-making. The layers were a way of the bureaucracy to not function in a transparent manner and create procedures to cover its tracks. For me, the bureaucracy has been a system that constricted the minds of the people, had a free run, was clearly arrogant, did not want to learn, use its powers to
settle scores, morally corrupt and reflected a pervert thought that would give them control over the masses. They were a class of people who had a free run, wrecking the lives of the people. The less said about the great bureaucracy the better it is as it ended up becoming the masters of non-performance who had colluded to form a cartel of the unfriendly. I couldn’t have agreed more with Mohan Guruswamy, who was recently quoted as saying: “I hope he cracks down on the receiving of gifts at Diwali and other festivals. They all have Mont Blanc pens, suit fabric, cases of Glenfiddich whisky and golf clubs. We have a bureaucracy which is undisciplined, corrupt and venal to its core. It’s about time it was shaken up.” What matters today is that the country is seeing a point in time in history wherein the sowing of the seeds for dismantling this gargantuan structure has probably started. People across the world have stood up and taken notice of this change.
The prime minister has set a process in motion that is clearly about managing the brute power and unprincipled behavior of the neighborhood unfriendly man the bureaucrat. Some of the significant steps taken are: * Make rules people friendly * Gag on the bureaucracy *Reduce procedural red tape *Changing the way senior bureaucrats are selected To begin with I could strongly suggest that we need to get rid of jokers in the system to build trust in bureaucracy. The trust in bureaucracy is important as they are the people who reflect the will of the government and they are eventual custodians of the governance mechanism. What matters today is an additional step to get rid of such people (clear weeding out) from service and do away with the constitutional privileges they enjoy. This could be the most important step in building up confidence in the bureaucracy, restoring faith in its functioning and building a people-oriented system.

Modi is ‘new fashion icon’ From a persona non grata to a fashion icon that’s how a stunning poll victory has transformed Modi in the US media ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
s if on cue, three major US publications — Time, New York Times and the Washington Post — have all written about his trademark ‘Modi Kurta’ as they try to “decode India’s new leader” ahead of his September summit with President Barack Obama. “India’s New Prime Minister Is the Country’s Latest Fashion Icon,” says Time suggesting “With his shortened tunic, or ‘Modi Kurta,’ Narendra Modi is becoming as celebrated for his style sense as he is notorious for his controversial political past.” Paired “with Bvlgari shades and a Movado watch (he’s got penchants for them both),” Modi’s “ensemble is about as mixed as his record as a political leader, really,” it said. “While his leadership of the state of Gujarat ushered in some of
the most impressive economic growth the country has ever seen, questions remain over his role in a string of riots in the state in 2002 that left more than 1,000 people dead,” Time said. But then it hastened to note parenthetically “He has been officially cleared of any wrongdoing. The New York Times sees in “Narendra Modi: A Leader Who Is What He Wears” saying “Even by the standards of a world...the image-craft of India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi - and its fashion fallout — has been something of a case study.” “Indeed, even by the standards of India itself, where leaders have perhaps understood the use of clothing as a ommunication device better and longer than any of their international peers ...Mr. Modi stands out. Literally and strategically,” says Time. “Objectively speaking, the Modi Kurta itself does not exactly represent an extraordinary aesthetic advance; rather it symbolizes a set of values. And therein lies its allure,” it adds. Probing “what Narendra Modi’s fashion says about his politics,” the Washington Post says: “Move aside, Michelle Obama. The world has a new fashion icon. And no, it’s not Vladimir Putin, despite his fitness regimen — it’s India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi.”
US court dismisses case against Sonia IANS, NEW DELHI
A
U.S. federal court in Brooklyn has dismissed a lawsuit filed by a Sikh rights organization accusing Congress party president Sonia Gandhi of shielding party leaders allegedly involved in violence against Sikhs in November 1984 in Delhi. US district judge Brian M. Cogan on June 10 granted Gandhi's motion to dismiss the case filed by New York based Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) for lack of subject matter jurisdiction and failure to state a claim. But he denied Sonia Gandhi's motion for "anti suit injunction" seeking to prevent SFJ from filing any further law suits. "Plaintiffs' claims under the ATS (Alien Tort Statute) must be
Sonia Gandhi
dismissed for lack of subject matter jurisdiction because they are plainly barred under the Supreme Court's decision in Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum Co," the judge ruled. The Alien Tort Statute (ATS) is a US federal law first adopted in 1789 that gives the federal courts
jurisdiction to hear lawsuits filed by non-US citizens for torts committed in violation of international law. Since the court has dismissed Sonia Gandhi's plea to bar SFJ from filing further law suits, SFJ will continue to hold Congress leaders accountable before US Courts, SFJ legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh said. Earlier, Gandhi had refused to provide copy of her passport to the US Court and conceded to the court's personal jurisdiction resulting in accomplishment of proper service of summons in the case. The class action suit against Sonia Gandhi was filed by SFJ and victims of 1984 under Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA).
US students decry assaults on women NEW DELHI: In a show of solidarity with victims of sexual assaults in India, students of Indian origin graduating from Ivy League universities in the US wore a red tape on their graduation caps during convocation ceremonies last week. Later, several students from Columbia University, Harvard University and Brown University participated in a peaceful protest against the rise in sexual violence in India, especially in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. “Respect for a women’s dignity is
respect for humanity. And that respect starts at home, spreads through communities, extends across university campuses to nations around the world. An assault on one woman is an attack on the entire human race,” Arnab De who completed his PhD from the Columbia University Medical Center and also served as the student representative of the Public Safety Committee at Columbia, told IANS over phone from Washington. “There is nothing anyone can do to bring the bravest Nirbhaya (Dec 16, 2012, New Delhi rape victim) back. But if I can invoke her memory to educate people, I would be very proud. In this regard, I am glad that the Nirbhaya trust was recently launched to help victims,” De told IANS.

The militants later fled the ASF Academy’s camp after a brief gun battle, Dawn Online reported. The attack on the ASF Academy’s camp No.2, near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, took place within a day of an audacious strike on June 8 night at the airport, in which 20 people and 10 militants were killed. An official confirmed that there were no casualties in the latest attack. He said the airport was

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s security agencies presented options to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for responding to Taliban terror attacks across the country, media reported on June 11. Sharif’s meeting with his national security team on June 10 came after the assessment of possibly of the worst wave of terrorist attacks in the country this year, the Dawn reported. Militants who have sanctuaries in Afghanistan carried out deadly strikes on border posts in Bajaur. Sectarian militants affiliated with Taliban have also targeted pilgrims in Taftan. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif among others attended the security meeting.

US not worried about Pakistan’s nuke safety WASHINGTON: Condemning the deadly militant attack on Karachi airport that left 30 dead, the US has offered Pakistan assistance in investigating the crime, but at this point was not concerned about the safety of Islamabad’s nuclear arsenal. “We have offered assistance to the relevant Pakistani authorities investi-
gating this crime,” State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters in response to a question about US support in the wake of the attack. When asked whether the US was concerned about the safety and security of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, Harf said there had been no discussions on the issue. But “we believe the Pakistani Government understands the importance of protecting all of its arsenal, including things related to its nuclear programme,” she said. “They care about this a great deal and have no reason at this point to think it’s anything but safe.”

President Pranab Mukherjee’s address to joint House of Parliament seeks to build on ideas of Narendra Modi’s campaign speeches and give concrete shape to many of his plans
Pranab spells out Modinomics IN THE SPEECH...
ARVIND PADMANABHAN, NEW DELHI
T
he address to parliament delivered by President Pranab Mukherjee Monday, outlining the policy priorities of the new government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is not only one of the most comprehensive in recent times but also reflects the vast task that lies ahead in implementing the promises made to India’s 1.2 billion people and others watching the world's third largest economy — that good times are indeed on the horizon. Not a constituency has been left out — women, youth, children, minorities, differently-abled, socially deprived, bureaucracy, judiciary, e-governance, economy, price rise, healthcare, education, housing, industry, taxation, defense, social sectors, skill development, to name a few — suggesting every ministry and department had been consulted and the views incorporated in the 4,700-word speech that took precisely 55 minutes to deliver. The fact that it has been widely appreciated can be gauged by the fact that there were moments, several in fact, where the opposition joined the treasury to give a thumbs-up to a particular proposal or promise, as it was being read out by the president, with thumping of the benches. It is a different matter that the spokespersons for various opposition parties did not find the address invigorating enough, with some even calling it a compendium of Narendra Modi's election slogans. Industry was elated. Sensex again ended on a new high. “The President has laid out an insightful, aspirational vision for the country, bolstered by comprehensive and multi-dimensional measures aimed at reining in inflation, boosting agricultural productivity and kick-starting the investment cycle," said CII president Ajay Shriram. It was quite evident that at the broader level the most pressing issues listed in the speech

“The president’s speech is high on rhetoric... These grand words are good in a party manifesto, but not in the president’s speech.” — Veerappa Moily (Cong) were: Reviving the economy, curbing price rise and lifting the general morale of investors, domestic and overseas, so important to set up projects, create jobs and fuel growth. Not just that. The speech also spelt out how most of these issues will be addressed and resolved, at least with an overview.
“It is the enunciation of the dreams and hopes which you have seen in the market place in the last three months.” — Kamal Nath (Congress) foreign equity in defense production, interlinking of rivers, among others. The detailing was complete when the president said should monsoon be sub-normal, contingency plans are being prepared. At the same time, as one has seen in the past, governments have promised the moon, but have little
Governments have promised the moon, but have little to show when the time comes for stock-taking. Some examples are: The promise of creating 100 new cities with all modern amenities, skilling the work force, raising farm productivity, sanitation and hygiene, comprehensive overhaul of rickety infrastructure, high-speed trains,
to show when the time comes for stock-taking. What matters ultimately is: How well the promises are implemented and delivered. In some ways, the speech itself recognizes that, when it acknowledged that
“This agenda is part of BJP’s manifesto and presented that through the president. We have to see how they will implement it.” — Mayawati (BSP chief) the people's decisive mandate for the Narendra Modi-led government is to see a vibrant, dynamic and prosperous India." An indication of that came in the comments by Kamal Nath, one of the most experienced parliamentarians in the 16th Lok Sabha: "The president's speech is an enunciation of the dreams and hopes which we have seen in the market place for the last three months." The next reality test will come less than a month from now, when Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presents the Union budget for the current fiscal. It will set the course for, whether or not, as the president's speech said, this government is able to say with confidence and pride in 60 months from now that it has done its job.
Digital India
Focus on neighborhood
Investor friendly reforms
IITs, IIMs in all states
PRESIDENT PRANAB Mukherjee said the government will work for digitization of government records and will establish wi-fi zones in critical public areas. Focus on high-end research, innovation. Government to focus on high-end research and nurturing innovation. The backbone of the Modi government’s new ways of working is “Digital India”.
THE GOVERNMENT would follow a foreign policy based on “enlightened national interest” and a “doctrine of mutually beneficial relationships”, focusing on the immediate South Asian neighborhood first. The invite to the SAARC leaders for the swearing in of Prime Minister Modi sent a “unique and bold signal” to South Asia and the world.
GOVERNMENT SAID it will rationalize and simplify the tax regime and undertake reforms that enhance the ease of doing business and revive investments. Outlining the new government’s agenda, President Pranab Mukherjee said the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will create a policy environment which is “predictable, transparent and fair.”
PRESIDENT SAID the government will set up IITs and IIMs in every state of the country, and will also formulate a national education policy to meet the challenges posed by lack of quality, research and innovation in Indian educational institutions. Youth will be nurtured and government will strive to bridge the gap between formal education and skill development.

Soccer fever: Blame it on Brazil! Spain face Holland in opening game, a repeat of 2010 final of FIFA World Cup; may face England in quarters IANS, RIO DE JANEIRO
H
olders champions Spain and hosts Brazil start as favorites for the 2014 FIFA World Cup crown but South American giants Argentina and new kids on the block Belgium can spring a few surprises. An ageing squad and hosts Brazil are Spain’s biggest troublesome areas and overcoming these two factors will decide if the Spaniards can become the third country after Italy and Brazil to retain their World Cup crown. Spain, however, have been off the boil for some time. They were completely outclassed by hosts Brazil in the final of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and lost to minnows like South Africa in international friendlies. Their narrow, lackluster victories over sides like Belarus and Equatorial Guinea showed they were not
Van Persie fit for World Cup MADRID: Robin van Persie had a disappointing season with Manchester United, suffering from several injuries, but is ready to conquer Spain in the first match of the Netherlands at the World Cup June 13 in Salvador, he said on June 8. “I made progress in recent weeks,” he said. “Although I have some minor groin problems, I would not call it an injury. I can’t remember I played a match without minor niggles.”

David Villa to retire after World Cup WASHINGTON: David Villa, former Valencia, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid player, announced on June 9 that he will retire from international football after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In an exclusive interview to EFE, Villa said that he wished he could play for the Spanish national team until he is 50, yet one needed to be realistic.
Villa, 32, was selected by national team coach, Vicente del Bosque, in the final squad list which will play in Brazil 2014. “I spoke with del Bosque and he understands my decision,” added Villa who is the all-time top scorer for Spain with 58 goals. The Spaniard said that he thought a lot about his decision to retire internationally, which seems logical as he is growing older, yet he did not wish to announce it before start of the Brazil World Cup with La Furia Roja. About Diego Costa, who is born in Brazil but opted to play for Spain in the World Cup, Villa praised him as a distinctive player with a lot of potential, and he will serve the national team well. Villa spoke about his stint with Atletico Madrid, praising it as a great experience which ended with winning La Liga title for the first time for Los Rojiblancos in 16 years. Villa did not mind ending his professional career with Sporting Gijon where he started as a youngster. The Spaniard recently signed with Major League Soccer (MLS) side New York City FC.
Spanish coach Vicente del Bosque has played down Spain’s chances of winning a fourth successive major tournament.
Koke confident about Spain NEW DELHI: Atletico Madrid’s 22-yearold midfielder Jesus Resurreccion ‘Koke’ admits that when as a boy he watched the World Cup on TV, he thought it would be “impossible” to play in the tournament, but now he could play a major role in Spain’s defense of their World title. Koke showed during Spain’s 2-0 win over El Salvador in their final warm up game ahead of kicking off their title defense against Holland.
team with three consecutive wins of either the continental championship or the World Cup. With the likes of Neymar, Oscar and Willian in the side, few would bet against Brazil topping Group A and going a long way into the tournament. Playing at home will also play a major role with six countries lifting the title when they have hosted the tournament. Brazil also comes into football’s showpiece event with some momentum behind them after winning the FIFA Confederations Cup. They outclassed defending World and Euro champions Spain 3-0 in the final. win five consecutive Roland Garros crowns. The 28year-old also drew level with American legend Pete Sampras at No.2 in the Grand Slam titleleaders’ list with 14 crowns, three behind Swiss star Roger Federer with 17. With the win, Nadal extended his win-loss record to 23-19 against Djokovic.
team increasingly looking like tournament favorites Messi scored in Argentina’s final warm-up game and the team seemed to be gelling well. With the World Cup happening in their backyard, the Argentine players will be licking their lips having to play in familiar conditions. Four years ago in South Africa, Diego Maradona was at the helm of the team and his boisterous and attention grabbing attitude only had an adverse effect on the team. With few talking about Argentina as tournament favorites this is when the white and blue stripes will be at their most dangerous. Belgium qualified for the World Cup in an emphatic fashion by recording a national record of seven successive wins during an unbeaten campaign.
Australia thrash India 4-0 in hockey THE HAGUE: India’s group campaign in the FIH Hockey World Cup came to an end with a 0-4 thrashing by defending champions Australia at the Kyocera Stadium here on June 9. Chris Ciriello (16th and 22nd) struck a brace while Kieran Govers (3rd) and Jeremy Hayward (20th) struck a goal apiece. It was in the second half that India fought back with confidence and challenged the Australians but without any success.

At the launch press conference of ‘MTV Splitsvilla Season 7’ here, Sunny, who is hosting the reality show with Nikhil Chinapa, had a contest for the media. They had to pen an innovative idea each on a chit. Later five chits were opened randomly and the persons were called on stage. A veteran cameraperson sang a Bengali number to woo the Ragini MMS 2 heroine, while a young man weaved an impromptu poem around the beauty.

Big B shot stunts for TV show in body rig? MUMBAI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s fiction debut on the small screen with the series Yudh just got a lot more dangerous. The actor is said to have defied medical orders to perform some forbidden stunts in a body rig. It’s been 30 years since the Big B wore a body rig for any of his stunts in a film. After the accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982 and the beating that his body took, the veteran star was forbidden from wearing the heavy body rigs required for cinematic stunts. Until now. For the serial Yudh that he is doing, Amitabh agreed to wear a body rig for a very intricate stunt. A source said: “It was an important scene where Bachchan saab’s character Yudhishthir Sikarwar had to confront an important crisis in his life. The director Ribhu Dasgupta had been told by the Big B’s team that he wouldn’t be wearing the body rig. The last time he wore one was for Coolie when the near-fatal accident happened.

‘Time to come out of box’
Displaying their ‘sensuous’ side is part of actors’ job, feels newcomer Surveen Chawla IANS, MUMBAI
A
s the lead actress in the film Hate Story 2 actress Surveen has done a lot of bold scenes with her co-star Jay Bhanushali. She describes them as a portrayal of “sensuality and sexuality”, not skin show. Before Hate Story 2, Surveen was seen on the small screen and Punjabi films. “If you ask me, I am the most comfortable in my skin, today. I am extremely happy for who I am, what I am and that to me is sensuality and sexuality, not showing off skin,” Surveen said here at the promo launch of the film. “That (showing skin) is only a way to showcase glamour and nothing more than that. So I don’t give it a lot of importance,” she added. Hate Story 2, a sequel to the 2012 film Hate Story, which starred Paoli Dam in the lead, also stars Sushant ‘That is only a Singh. It has been way to showcase directed by Vishal glamor and Pandya and produced by Vikram Bhatt. nothing more Surveen wants the than that. So I Indian audience to stop don’t give it a lot smirking at bold scenes of importance’ in Hindi films now. “Time has come (when) we stop being hypocrite about it and show love the way it is supposed to be shown. I think times and cinema have changed,” Surveen said. “We acclaim films from overseas and say ‘what a great job done’. But when we Indians do it, it becomes weird. For me and every professional, it’s just a job, I don’t see a reason why it should be prohibited,” she added.

Film: Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty; Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Freddy Daruwala and Govinda; Director: A.R. Murugadoss; Rating: **** 1/2
L
et me stick my neck out just this once to say Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is going to be a huge success. It has all the trappings of a superlative masala entertainer, plus a thought provoking message on the uneasy relationship between the army and civilians. Hence army man Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar) who is home for a vacation uses the time to fall in love with an arranged match and also save Mumbai from a sleeper cell
terrorist attack, which threatens to plunder the city. He is a busy man. So is director
A.R. Murugadoss. They both are on the same mission. While Akshay saves the city, his director rescues the masala fare from the blemishes of blandness that it has acquired lately. Just how Murugadoss manages to mix the dark theme of terrorism with a palatable mainstream cinematic platter served with dollops of pickles and ‘papad’ is a marvel. The director’s earlier film Ghajini was another landmark of mainstream filmmaking. It suffered from excessive violence and too many resemblances to a Hollywood film (Memento) to be dismissed as coincidental. In Holiday, Murugadoss is more in charge of the proceedings. Having Akshay at the helm helps. He is a man of the streets and yet capable
of looking completely convincing as a larger than life hero. This is Akshay’s most chiselled and restrained yet boisterous and exuberant performance to date. It’s just as hard to imagine Holiday without Akshay. We often tend to think the grammar and language of mainstream cinema to be far easier to convey than the language of the socalled serious cinema. Wrong! A full-on massy product, which doesn’t resort to outlandish inanities or outright vulgarity, is the most difficult form of filmmaking. In Holiday, Murugadoss has some absolutely unflinching support from his writers and technicians, all out to create that increasingly elusive cinematic entity. The perfect entertainer. — Subhash K Jha

BOYFRIEND OF WOMAN FOUND DEAD RELEASED FROM JAIL

BY A STAFF WRITER
HILADELPHIA (PA) -- The boyfriend of an Indian American woman who was found dead on February 20 has been released from prison. Bhupinder Singh, 25, the boyfriend of Nadia Malik, was released on May 19 from the George W. Hill Correctional Facility in Thornton and placed on electronic home monitoring, according to Emily Harris, a spokeswoman for the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. Malik was found dead inside a car parked near 30th Street Station. The car, which had several parking tickets, was registered to the parents of Malik’s boyfriend, the police said. Singh was sentenced last month to four to 23 months in jail for violating his probation from a 2010 DUI case. He had fled to his parents’ house in Solon, Ohio, the day before Malik was reported missing.

One condition of that sentencing was that Singh could only be released on a parole plan that included monitored house
arrest, according to court records. Malik’s brother, Khaled Malik, said he was angry upon hearing that Singh had been released. “They failed, everyone failed,” said Malik on May 22. “Nothing has changed in the past two months. We haven’t gotten anywhere.” Marple Township Det. Barry Williams said the investigation into Malik’s slaying was on hold, pending results from toxicology tests from the city Medical Examiner’s Office. “We’re still waiting for the final results to determine what to do with [Singh],” Williams said. But members of the Malik family say they don’t need any more evidence: To them, it’s clear who took Nadia’s life. Khaled Malik provided to a newspaper with text messages allegedly sent by Singh through Nadia’s phone that taunt the family, saying they’ll never see her again

Drug-trafficking case against hotelier dismissed BY A STAFF WRITER

EW YORK -- Dream Hotel founder Vikram Chatwal has beaten the rap on his felony drug-trafficking case that could have landed him in a Florida prison for 20 years. The 17th Circuit Court in Broward County ‘totally dismissed’ the case against the Indian American hotelier last month after he completed a rigorous one-year drug-rehabilitation program in New York City, a source said. Chatwal, who has dated Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen and been linked to Lindsay Lohan, successfully completed all three phases of the program, which included substance-abuse counseling and drug testing. “Vikram earnestly strove, this past year, to address addiction issues, and thankfully the Broward County judicial

In a petition on Change.org, she implores Mayor Nutter to institute a policy that would require cars with multiple parking tickets to be scanned for possible involvement in criminal investigations. “If she had been found sooner, this mystery could have been solved,” Malik said. “The circumstances are all working for [Singh] now

of substance dependency,” says Chatwal’s attorney Mark Heller. Chatwal, 41, was arrested in April, 2013 at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport after TSA agents caught him trying to board a plane with heroin, cocaine and prescription pills, the police said. Agents initially spotted 21 white pills in his carry-on luggage at a screening checkpoint. They later identified them as prescription pills, which Chatwal purchased illegally, he told investigators. The agents also discovered a small piece of white plastic wrap containing five grams of cocaine in Chatwal’s jacket pocket. They also recovered an eighth of an ounce of pot in a small plastic baggie. After posting $13,000 bail, Chatwal was allowed to fly back to New York to attend his drug-treatment program under the close scrutiny of the Florida court.

EW YORK -- A taxi driver was seriously injured when a passenger beat him with a skateboard after knowing that he was from Pakistan. According to cabbie Mohammad Ali Fahd, a 36-year-old father of two, he picked up the African-American passenger just after midnight on June 2 on Second Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets. He says the man became unruly after asking him about his country of origin. Fahd says the passenger, who wanted to be taken to 186th Street and St Nicholas, started cursing and banging on the partition after he told the man that he was from Pakistan. Fahd was distracted by the commotion and hit a pothole. He stopped the car at a gas station to check, which is when he was attacked by the skateboard-wielding man: “I was doing my safety check to make sure everything was all right with the car when he came up and hit me from behind,” said Fahd who suffered a fractured nose, facial cuts and severe swelling to his left eye in the murderous assault after which the attacker fled the scene on his skateboard. He hasn’t been able to open the eye since the attack, and doctors aren’t sure how badly his vision will be affected. The suspect was was wearing a white sweatshirt and was 5 feet 11 inches tall.

Bal Vihar’s Annual Day turns memorable BY A STAFF WRITER

urukuls were an integral part of ancient Indian culture/ society. In today’s terms, they would be non-traditional boarding schools where the teacher (Guru) taught for free and the students were treated equally regardless of social status of their families. The institution of yesteryears was supported by public donations. Well, to some extent Bal Vihar of St. Louis (“Bal Vihar”) is also a modern-day Gurukul, far away from India. Bal Vihar of St Louis celebrated its Annual Day on May 11, wrapping up 22 successful years of its existence. The event provided the students with an opportunity to showcase their talents. A lot of classes came together to perform as a group. From Kindergartners to high school students, their talents were at full display. The Annual Day was also a special occasion for 11 senior youths who completed their Bal Vihar journey. These students served as teachers during their last year guiding their younger community. These students are now ready for the next level of journey that leads them towards leveraging the skills they acquired during these last few years. AN FRANCISCO (CA) -- Xoom Corporation, a leading digital money transfer provider, is offering instant deposits to Punjab National Bank accounts in India. This breakthrough service allows Xoom customers to instantly deposit money directly into their recipients’ Punjab National Bank (PNB) accounts in India in less than a minute. Instant deposit is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, except during a maintenance window from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. IST on Sundays.
“Xoom is tirelessly working towards providing a fast service for our customers and we are thrilled to announce this expansion of our instant deposit bank network in India,” said Julian King, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Development for Xoom. “This is great news for people who send
money to PNB accounts, who otherwise typically have to wait five days or more to access their funds. Through our expanded instant service, NRIs can send money anytime, anywhere from their computer, mobile phone or tablet and their bank deposits reach their recipients’ PNB accounts in less than a minute.” “This revolutionary service marks another milestone in our deep and long standing partnership with Xoom and its subsidiary buyindiaonline,” said Mr. K. Thyagarajan, General Manager, International Banking, PNB. He further added, “We are pleased to
offer instant deposit to PNB accounts for customers who send money from the U.S. to India and look forward to bringing a whole new world of convenience and flexibility to our account holders.” Xoom provides great locked-in exchange rates for money transfers to India, and there is no fee when customers send more than $1,000 and pay with their US-based bank account. Plus, Xoom continues to provide fast bank deposits within four hours to all other banks in India, including to NRE and NRO accounts, when sent during bank processing hours in India.

Water turns killer, 24 H’bad students drown in Himachal Rescue teams fish out five bodies, search for the remaining on; water came gushing as nearby dam opened floodgates IANS, SHIMLA/ HYDERABAD
A
t least 24 students, including six girls of an engineering college in Hyderabad, were washed away in the Beas river in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district on June 8 evening. Rescue workers from the NDRF and army personnel on June 10 carried out a search operation to locate the missing 19 students. “We have traced five bodies in the past two days,” Jaideep Singh, commanding officer of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), told IANS. He said a team of 84 people, comprising 10 underwater divers, carried out the search operation in the river from Thalaut near Hanogi Mata temple, the accident spot, to the Pandoh dam. The dam is some 15 km downstream from the accident spot. More than 60 students and faculty members from V.N.R. Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology were on an excursion to
the picturesque tourist resort of Manali. Some of them were getting themselves photographed on the banks of the river in Thalaut area near the Hanogi Mata temple when they were washed away as the flow in the river suddenly increased, Deputy Commissioner Devesh Kumar told IANS. The river was suddenly in spate after the release of water from a nearby hydropower project, authorities said. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. “The chances of survival are bleak as the current in the river is very strong,” Additional District Magistrate Pankaj Rai said. A survivor recalled how the river became a “watery grave” within seconds. “The silent river literally turned into a watery grave within a fraction of seconds,” Kiran, one of the survivors and a faculty member of the Vignana Jyothi Institute told IANS. Another survivor, Ravi Kumar said: “The water level suddenly rose to five or six feet and the students who were close to the river were
Young dreams shattered washed away.” He said no help came from the district administration for hours. According to him, there were no hoardings to warn the tourists not to go near the flowing water. “Before going into the water, we asked the locals and they said we could go.” A hair-raising video which showed how the merrymaking of students turned into a tragedy went viral on internet on June 11.
HYDERABAD: The ghastly tragedy in Himachal Pradesh shattered many young dreams and plunged their families into gloom. The young boys and girls had dreams of building a career and lending a helping hand to their parents but the tragedy cut short their lives. A pall of gloom descended on the house of Rambabu in a hamlet in Mata mandal of Nalgonda district. This son of a security guard was a secondyear student of electronics engineering. Friends recalled that he was a
brilliant student. The parents of Ishwariya were on a pilgrimage while she choose to be with her friends for the picnic. A smiling Vijetha posed for picture and this last smile was captured on the mobiles of her friends. The survivors recalled the horror.

elugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N. Chandrababu Naidu Sunday took oath as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh here. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan administered the oath to Naidu at Acharya Nagarjuna University near Guntur town in the presence of over 200,000 people. Those who took oath include senior leaders Y. Ramakrishnudu, Ayyanna Patrudu, B. Gopalakrishna Reddy, P. Raghunath Reddy,
Ganta Srinivas and Paritala Sunta, widow of slain leader Paritala
Ravindra. The TDP has given two cabinet berths to its ally the Baratiya Janata Party (BJP). K. Srinivas and Manikyala Rao are the representatives from the BJP. Naidu will be the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh after carving out of separate Telangana state. The 64-year-old earlier served as the chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh from 1995 to 2004. He was the leader of opposition for nearly a decade. TDP bagged 102 seats in 175member Andhra Pradesh assembly. Its ally BJP won four seats.
KCR seeks special status for Telangana NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 7 in the national capital, and demanded special category status for his state. KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, sought a package and financial assistance for the new state. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi
(TRS) chief also urged the prime minister to withdraw the ordinance transferring 205 villages in Khammam district of Telangana to Andhra Pradesh as part of construction of the Polavaram irrigation project. KCR submitted a detailed memorandum to Modi. He also sought national status to Paranahita Chevella irrigation project,
TRS sources said. Earlier, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a tweet: “Telangana CM Shri K. KCR has said he wants to make wants to make Hyderabad a world class city by developing infrastructure.

T
he much-awaited monsoon arrived in Kerala on June 6, the Met office said. An official release said rainfall exceeding 7 cm will occur at a few places in Kerala and Lakshadweep till the morning of June 9. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officials also issued a warning to fishermen, stating that strong winds with speed up to 45 to 55 kmph are likely along the Kerala coast and Lakshadweep. The monsoon arrived a day later than expected. Once the southwest monsoon
sets in over Kerala, it advances northwards and covers the entire country by July 15. The IMD stated they declared the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala based on data recorded at the 14 weather stations in Lakshadweep, Kerala and Mangalore. They begin to monitor the rainfall from May 10 and if 60 percent of the stations or more record 2.5 mm of rain for two continuous days, then it satisfies the criterion that monsoon has arrived. Another yardstick is the strength of the wind. Cloud movements are also a key indicator for the weathermen.

f you speak more languages than one, it is good not only for your social image but also for the health of your brain, a research said. Bilingualism has a positive effect on cognition later in life. Individuals, who speak two or more languages, even those who acquired the second language in adulthood, may slow down cognitive decline from ageing, the research found. “Our study is the first to examine whether learning a second language impacts cognitive performance later in life while controlling for childhood intelligence,” said lead author Thomas Bak from University of Edinburgh.
Bilingualism is thought to improve cognition and delay dementia in older adults. While prior research has investigated the impact of learning more languages than one, ruling out “reverse causality” has proven diffi-
Bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the aging brain cult. “The crucial question is whether people improve their cognitive functions through learning new languages or whether those with better baseline cognitive func-
tions are more likely to become bilingual,” Bak asked. For the current study, researchers relied on data of 835 native speakers of English who were born and living in Edinburgh, Scotland. Some 262 participants reported to be able to communicate in at least one language other than English. “The findings indicate that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities,” the researchers added. The strongest effects were seen in general intelligence and reading. The effects were present in those who acquired their second language early as well as late. “Bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the aging brain,” Bak concluded.

Low-power light could trigger stem cells inside the body to regenerate tissue, the study said. “Our treatment modality does not introduce anything new to the body, and lasers are routinely used in medicine and dentistry, so the barriers to clinical translation are low,” said David Mooney, a professor at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) in the U.S.
Hunger-blocking hormone may help treat obesity NEW YORK: A specific hormone known to regulate metabolism, appetite and weight, also influences cells other than neurons that control appetite. Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have found that the hormone also acts on other types of cells to control appetite — a discovery that could lead to development of treatments for metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. “Until now, the scientific community thought that leptin acts exclusively in neurons to modulate behavior and body weight,” said Tamas Horvath, professor of biomedical research at Yale. Leptin, a naturally occurring hormone, is known for its hunger-blocking effect on the hypothalamus, a region in the brain. Food intake is influenced by signals that travel from the body to the brain. Leptin is one of the molecules that sig-
nals the brain to modulate food intake. It is produced in fat cells and informs the brain of the metabolic state. Researchers found that animals responded less to feeding reducing effects of leptin but had heightened feeding responses to the hunger hormone ghrelin.

Red lipstick
favored at work in bid for promotion: Survey 40 percent of women believe the flirting with the boss is more likely to gain them promotion at work IANS, LONDON
A
red lipstick beauty look ensures you stand out from the crowd but what is more interesting that women are wearing this look at the workplace to help in getting a promotion, new research says. Nearly half of British women wear red lipstick to work to
impress their boss, according to the survey. The research, done by Escentual.com — a premier beauty destination — found that 40 percent of women regularly arrive at the office sporting an alluring scarlet shade of lipstick in an attempt to attract the attention of their male bosses, reports femalefirst.co.uk. And even more women, nearly two thirds, would wear heavy eye make-up in order to be noticed by their male superiors. Perhaps the reason for this bold and sexy make-up is that 40 percent of women believe that flirting with the boss is more likely to gain them promotion at work. And the clothing choices appear to be a lot more provocative than before as well, with almost half of women admitting that they would defy conservative office dress codes and wear low-cut blouses and high heels in the work place. Surprisingly most women said they would team their pillarbox red pout with heavy eye make-up, including dark eye-shadow, eyeliner and mascara. “A red lip is no longer a look reserved for a date or a night out,” said Emma Leslie, beauty editor of Escentual.com. “For whatever reasons, more and more women are introducing red lipstick into their office make-up routine, but it’s important to make sure you don’t go overboard,” she cautioned.
Make the most of strawberries Jewellery trend 2014: Chokers IANS, LONDON
S
trawberries are making their way in the summer menus, so get ready to eat them dipped in chocolate, smothered in cream, dropped in champagne or simply eaten fresh. What’s more — they can add to your beauty and health too! Neil Nugent, executive chef of product development at Morrisons, a chain of
supermarkets in Britain, provides his top five ways to make the most of your strawberries this summer, reports femalefirst.co.uk. n Try dipping in a good balsamic vinegar. It’s a perfect appetizer. n Serve whole with shaved parmesan cheese, a kind of Italian extra-hard cheeses. The salty cheese goes perfectly with the strawberries to create a sweet fragrant flavor.
n Try on a skewer-rub with a
little olive oil, then barbeque quickly over hot coals and then serve with freshly ground black pepper n Strawberries are perfect for smoothies with a little yoghurt, banana and orange juice. Crush strawberries using a fork with a little sugar and freshly chopped mint. This is delicious served with vanilla ice cream.

esigners across the globe are trying to bring back the charm of choker neckpieces, and are positioning it as a "must-have accessory" this season. The last time choker necklace grabbed attention was the Dolce & Gabbana "Love" piece that singer-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham wore. Now, Holly Fulton, Balmain and Saint Laurent are some of the designers who are focussing on this accessory to ensure that all eyes are drawn to the neck. The trend is popular at red carpet events too. American actress Elle Fanning wore one with her Elie Saab Couture gown to the world premiere of the Hollywood movie Maleficent and recently, American socialite Olivia Palermo wore a simple gold choker to the CFDA Fashion Awards 2014 in New York, reports femalefirst.co.uk. If you're planning to follow the trend, just avoid wearing them with fussy necklines.
