US judge rejects Trump bid to end ‘Dreamers’ Judge stays ruling for 90 days to give DHS a chance to provide more solid reasoning for ending DACA IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US judge has labelled as “unlawful” President Donald Trump’s decision to rescind the Obamaera Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme protecting young illegal immigrants, and for the first time, ordered the government to reopen it to new applicants. US District Judge John D. Bates this week called the government’s decision to end the DACA programme “virtually unexplained” and therefore “unlawful”. However, he stayed his ruling for 90 days to give the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) a chance to provide more solid reasoning for

Cohen asserts constitutional rights WASHINGTON: Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, said that he would assert his Fifth Amendment Michael Cohen rights against self-incrimination regarding his involvement in a non-disclosure deal involving porn star Stormy Daniels and the US President, the media reported. The Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution states that no individual can be “compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself”. In court papers filed on Wednesday at the US District Court in Los Angeles, Cohen cited FBI raids of his residence, office and hotel room in New York earlier this month and the seizure of “various electronic devices and documents in my possession”, reports CNN. “Based upon the advice of counsel, I will assert my Fifth Amendment rights in connection with all proceedings in this case due to the ongoing criminal investigation by the FBI and US Attorney for the Southern District of New York,” Cohen said. He filed the declaration as part of an effort to have a civil lawsuit filed by Daniels put on hold. —IANS

ending the programme, the Washington Post reported. “DACA’s rescission was arbitrary and capricious because the Department failed adequately to explain its conclusion that the programme was unlawful,” Bates said. Bates is the third judge to rule against Trump administration attempts to rescind the DACA, which provides two-year, renewable work permits and deportation protections for about 690,000 “dreamers”, undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children. After the White House announced its move to end the DACA in September, federal judges in California and New York blocked the administration’s plans and ordered it to renew work per-

mits for immigrants enrolled in the programme. Bates said “if the government does not come up with a better explanation within 90 days, he will rescind the government memo that terminated the programme and require Homeland Security to enrol new applicants, as well”. Thousands could be eligible to apply. “Each day that the agency delays is a day that aliens who might otherwise be eligible for initial grants of DACA benefits are exposed to removal because of an unlawful agency action,” the judge wrote. In response to the ruling, the Justice Department said it stands by its original reasoning, calling the DACA an “unlawful circum-

US Senate panel narrowly endorses Pompeo IANS, WASHINGTON

A

US Senate panel has narrowly endorse Mike Pompeo as the new Secretary of State after President Donald Trump and a Republican Senator intervened at the last minute, the media reported. Pompeo had seemed unlikely to secure a majority of the panel’s support. But Senator Rand Paul, who had pledged to oppose him, tweeted moments before the vote that Trump had talked with him and changed his mind, reports The Washington Post. “Having received assurances from President Trump and Director Pompeo that he agrees with the

Democrats not invited to Trump’s first state dinner IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have not extended invitations to Democrats from Congress to attend their first state dinner, a media report said. This year, the guest list for the state dinner slated was whittled to around 120 people, down from highs of 350 or so people who attended previous bipartisan and media-filled dinners featuring

celebrities and pop icons like Beyonce, The New York Times reported. The Washington National Opera will perform this year at the dinner, the White House said. Typically the leadership of the opposing party is invited to state dinners, but the Trumps threw out that tradition as they also shunned journalists, who in previous administrations received a handful of invitations. According to a White House official, the list was so small that

Naidu rejects CJI’s impeachment motion, Oppn to go to SC NEW DELHI: Dealing a blow to the opposition, Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu this week rejected an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Dipak Misra on the ground that there was lack of “credible and verifiable” information on charges of “misbehavior” which, he said, undermined judiciary’s independence. The Chairman’s decision on the petition filed by 64 MPs belonging to seven parties led by the Congress on Friday was met with strong criticism from former Law Minister and eminent lawyer Kapil Sibal, who termed it as illegal and unconstitutional done in a “tearing hurry”. He said the order will be challenged in the Supreme Court. However, BJP President Amit Shah attacked the Congress saying the opposition move was part of a larger trend to demonize and weaken every institution which seeks to maintain its individual identity and not kowtow to the dynasty. —IANS

Modi to meet Chinese premier in Wuhan GAURAV SHARMA, WUHAN

I

ndia and China will look to reset their strained ties as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping meet each other at a two-day informal summit in the central Chinese city of Wuhan starting on Friday. The Asian giants, who fought a brief war in 1962 and have a history of mutual distrust, nearly came to an armed conflict near their border in 2017, taking their ties to a new low. However, the “one of its kind” rendezvous between Modi and Xi at the heart of China is a sign enough that the two countries were willing for a new start in their tense relationship. The Xi-Modi meeting will be different from the past ones as the talks will not be choreographed but freewheeling with only one Mandarin-speaking Indian interpreter present. The meeting is an offshoot of Xi-Modi parleys just after the resolution of the Doklam crisis on the sidelines of BRICS Summit at Xiamen in China. “The idea germinated at the Xiamen summit,” said an official. The two leaders will meet not

once or twice but “several” times during the two days and will have heart-to-heart conversations, Chinese and Indian officials say.

According to informed sources, Modi and Xi might amble down the East Lake in Wuhan or take a boat ride by the historic villa of

Mao Zedong. Though there is no formal agenda of the meet and both will not issue any joint statement, thorny issues like border dispute will come up during their chat. “You can imagine the importance Xi provides to India as this is the first time he is having such a meeting with any foreign leader. They will chat on all outstanding issues,” a Chinese government official told IANS. India and China have a longstanding dispute over their 3,500km long winding border, which ties them down. Of the 14 neighbors, China is yet to settle its boundary dispute only with India and Bhutan. New Delhi is against Beijing’s grand Belt and Road project whose artery cuts through Pakistan-controlled Kashmir. India’s stance on the Belt and Road matters to China as the opposition by New Delhi could well hamper the project. Another sticking point is Beijing’s opposition to New Delhi’s application to enter the Nuclear Suppliers Group and its plea at the UN to declare the Pakistan-based Masood Azhar as an international terrorist.

Exit Yashwant: No big deal, yet... BJP veteran Yashwant Sinha believes he has enough of the political oomph to make an impact on public life by playing a meaningful role. What that role will be — if any — will be clear with time AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

Y

ashwant Sinha’s departure from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is an event which ranks as low on the political Richter scale as the entrances of S.M. Krishna or Rita Bahuguna Joshi in the saffron outfit from the Congress. All these individuals are hasbeens in the political world whose comings and goings are of greater interest to themselves than to the general public. One reason for the latter’s disinterest is that these departures and arrivals are not seen to be driven by ideological considerations, but by personal factors like ego which makes them look for new pastures to overcome the feeling of being neglected by their old parties. Age is another aspect, especially in the cases of Yashwant Sinha and S.M. Krishna. They can even be mocked on this count as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley did when he described Sinha as an 80-year-old job applicant when the former finance and external affairs minister of the Atal Behari Vajpayee government started criticizing the party.

Not surprisingly, the BJP has now lambasted Yashwant Sinha for singing the Congress’s tune. (Photo: IANS)

Not surprisingly, the BJP has now lambasted Sinha for singing the Congress’s tune. Ever since he started acting like a dissident, along with Arun Shourie and Shatrughan Sinha, the trio has been seen as renegades although they were not expelled. It is possible that the step of

eviction was not taken lest it allows them to pose as martyrs or because the party did not have the time to spare on those whom it did not consider important enough. Unlike Shourie and Shatrughan Sinha, Yashwant Sinha apparently did not like the idea of playing the in-house rebel for long, presumably

because despite his protestations about adopting sanyas (monkhood) from party politics, he still hopes to play a notable role, albeit in the opposition camp, if only to prove that he is not “brain dead” which is how, according to him, the BJP regards all those above 75. Nor did he want to be relegated

to the ranks of those in the so-called Margdarshak Mandal or purported visionaries like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, who have palpably been sidelined to play the role of mute and powerless observers. As Yashwant Sinha’s latest step shows, he believes that he has enough of the political oomph in him to make an impact on public life by playing a meaningful role. What that role will be — if any — will only become clear with time. Since he is an effective speaker, as are Shourie and Shatrughan Sinha, the BJP cannot but be a trifle wary if only because he will know some of the party’s secrets as well as its ways of functioning. The BJP will also be on guard about the two others. If they, too, jump ship, it will not be a good enough publicity for the party, even if it dismisses them as opportunists who are unhappy about not having been accommodated in the government. The party will also be cautious about Sinha’s subterranean lines of communication with the other senior citizens in the Margdarshak Mandal who cannot be too pleased about their marginalization.

Celebrating equality at the world’s biggest community kitchen The ‘Langar Hall’ at the Golden Temple complex feeds 100,000 people daily JAIDEEP SARIN, AMRITSAR (PUNJAB)

I

f there is one big leveller for people, irrespective of their religion, caste, gender, social status or riches, it is the langar, or community kitchen, at the Golden Temple complex, where the holiest of Sikh shrines, the Harmandir Sahib, is located, in this city considered holy by Sikhs. Referred to as the world’s largest community kitchen, the Sri Guru Ram Das Jee Langar Hall of the Golden Temple complex is unique in several aspects. On an average, it feeds over 100,000 people daily — from children to old people — from all religions, castes, regions, countries; and people from varied social, economic and political

backgrounds. “It is a 24x7 operation that carries on day and night all 365 days of the year. It has been going on for centuries, since the concept of langar was introduced by Guru Nanak Dev (the first Guru of the Sikh religion and its founder; born 1469) and propagated by other Gurus,” Wazir Singh, senior in-charge of the langar preparation, told IANS. At any given point of the day or night, the place is not only swarmed by devotees wanting to partake what is considered as blessed by service, but by hundreds of volunteers who are ever-so-ready to be part of the voluntary cooking and serving process. The langar food is even sent thrice daily to the two Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee

(SGPC)-run hospitals in Amritsar, especially to a ward where treatment of mentally-ill patients and drug-addicts is being carried out. The SGPC is tasked with the management all Sikh shrines. “We have over 500 volunteer employees. The sangat (community) also pitches in with great enthusiasm daily. People come from across Punjab on trucks and tractor-trolleys — even other states, different countries — to help in this massive exercise of making and serving food. Several local residents, including women, have been

coming here for years. People take time out of their government and private jobs to serve here, irrespective of their religion or caste. We welcome everyone with love,” Wazir Singh, speaking in Punjabi, pointed out, even as he continued to issue instructions to staffers involved in cooking the langar. The langar is all vegetarian — comprising mainly of dal (maachole ki dal), rice (slightly salted for taste), chapattis, achar (pickle) and a vegetable, along with something sweet (kheer or prasad). In the morning, the chai langar comprises

tea and rusk. The devotees sit down on the matted floor inside the langar hall in rows. To manage the huge rush, the SGPC volunteers allow only a few hundred to enter the hall at one time. The whole operation is carried out in a meticulous manner as a daily routine. SGPC functionaries pointed out that 30,000-35,000 people from Amritsar and nearby areas are daily visitors to the shrine and partake langar thrice. Many of these are migrants from other states and poor people who cannot afford meals.

TRUMP, MACRON HINT AT NEW IRAN N-DEAL The current Iran nuke deal is not ‘sufficient,’ says French President on his visit to the US IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron have suggested there could be a new agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. The visiting French President proposed to work with other parties to forge the new deal amid bilateral divergences on several issues remaining, as his state visit drew to a close, Xinhua news agency reported. Speaking at a joint press conference with Trump, Macron said the current Iran nuke deal, internationally known as the JCPOA signed in 2015, was not “sufficient”. However, it still “enabled us, at least until 2025, to have some con-

Iran threatens to quit NPT if US scraps nuke deal TEHRAN: A senior Iranian security official said on Tuesday that his country would consider withdrawing from the nuclear Ali Shamkhani Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if the US scraps the 2015 nuclear deal, Tehran Times reported. “According to the NPT, the (contracting) countries can easily withdraw from the treaty if they realize that it does not benefit them and this is a possible option for the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Shamkhani made the remarks at a press conference before his departure to Russia’s Sochi to attend an international security conference. Iran has not benefited from the fruits of the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which went into effect in January 2016, he said. “The other side (the United States) has been creating obstructions since the day of implementation of the agreement,” the Iranian official added. He highlighted Iran’s capability of “resuming nuclear activities,” saying his country will take “surprising actions” if the nuclear deal is sabotaged. — IANS

trol over their nuclear activities”, he added, saying: “We therefore wish, from now on, to work on a new deal with Iran.” After the talks, Trump, who is sceptical of the 2015 accord, also spoke about “doing a much bigger... deal”, the BBC reported. Macron said a new pact must cover Iran’s ballistic missile program and its role in the Middle East. Iran had warned of “severe consequences” if the US withdrew from the deal. In 2015, Iran had agreed to mothball its nuclear programme in return for an easing of economic sanctions on Tehran. Trump has been threatening to reject an extension of the Barack Obama-era nuclear pact reached between Tehran and world powers

by a May 12 deadline, the BBC report said. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is due to visit the US on Friday, will make a last-minute bid to dissuade Trump from potentially torpedoing the agreement. Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif was quoted as saying that Tehran would “most likely” abandon the accord if the US pulled out. Macron agreed that Tehran’s influence in the region must be part of negotiations. He stressed that the 2015 deal controls Iran’s nuclear programme for the next decade, but the fresh deal must cover its nuclear activities longerterm, the BBC said. Macron also talked about working with Trump to build a “new framework” in the Middle East --

and especially in Syria. The French President said he did not know whether Trump would extend the May 12 deadline, adding: “I can say that we have had very frank discussions on that, just the two of us.”

Trump earlier warned Iran against resuming its nuclear programme. “They’re not going to be restarting anything. They restart it they’re going to have big problems, bigger than they’ve ever had before.”

NRI loses Congressional by-election Democrat Indian-American doctor Hiral Tipirneni narrowly loses by-election to Congress in a heavily Republican constituency in Arizona ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

A

Democrat Indian-American doctor has narrowly lost a by-election to Congress in a heavily Republican constituency in Arizona but dramatically increased her party’s support in what was seen as a referendum on Donald Trump’s presidency. Hiral Tipirneni lost by only six per cent of the votes in April 23 (Tuesday’s) by-election from a constituency that was considered so heavily Republican that the Democratic Party did not even bother to run a candidate there in 2016 considering it futile. The by-election in the constituency, which covers the suburbs of the state’s main city Phoenix, was caused by the resignation of Trent Franks, the sex

Remittances to India rose sharply by 9.9 percent in 2017, reversing the previous year’s sharp decline, the report added. Global remittances are expected grow 4.6 percent to $642 billion in 2018, it said.

scandal-tainted long-time Republican member of the House of Representatives. Trump polled 21 per cent more votes in the constituency against Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

Had Tipirneni won, she would have joined the four Indian-Americans in the House of Representatives — Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Pramila Jayapal and Ro Khanna. Kamala Harris is a senator of part Indian-American her-

itage. Despite Tipirneni’s defeat, her polling 47 per cent of the votes in a constituency that had previously been written off as unwinnable by the Democrats was seen as a boost for the party working hard to capture Congress in the November elections. “Win or lose, we’re taking this to November,” Tipirineni told her supporters after the election, according to a report. Arizona’s Republican Senator Jeff Flake conceded that Tipirneni’s showing was a warning to his party, saying that the six per cent margin signalled a threat. Franks, who had served in the House of Representatives for 14 years, resigned in December when he faced charges of sexual harassing his employees, including offering one of them $5 million to be impregnated by him.

Scientist facing misconduct allegations WASHINGTON: A well-known Indian-American scientist, Inder Verma, in the US has been placed on administrative leave following allegations of “inappropriate conduct” against him, media reported. Verma is a cancer and gene therapy scientist at the prestigious Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California. He has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegations against him. According to the reports, the institute did not give any reason for suspending 70-year-old Verma, who is considered as one of the world’s leading authorities on gene therapy and cancer. The institute has hired a San Diego-based international employment law and consulting firm to investigate allegations, not yet made public, reports added.

n Indian American teenager wanted on a felony firearms possession warrant was killed in police firing after he used firearms on them in California, officials said. Nathaniel Prasad, 18, was shot dead on April 5, according to an investigation report released by the Freemont Police Department, According to police, Prasad was sought on felony probation and firearms possessions warrants, as well as a misdemeanor evading warrant for fleeing a Fremont school resource officer on March 22, East Bay Times reported. On April 5, members of the Fremont Police Department’s street

crimes unit saw Prasad riding in a car north on Fremont Boulevard near Central Avenue. He was a copassenger in the car driven by a female and it was soon intercepted. The suspect tried to escape on foot and an officer was on a pur-

suit. The officer located Prasad near a gas station and when tried confronting him, the 18-year-old took a gun out and fired two rounds before disappearing towards Fremont Boulevard, police said. The involved officer broadcast

over the police radio that the suspect had a gun. The interaction was captured on video surveillance and was corroborated by statements of the officer and witnesses at the scene, the report said. Later, there were six officers chasing Prasad and at one point he once again pulled the gun fired at the officers, CBS San Francisco reported. Police said the interaction was corroborated by witnesses, statements by the officers, body-worn camera footage and in-car camera footage. The officers returned fire and bullets struck Prasad. According to police, Prasad fell to the ground. But he still had a weapon in his hand and officers shot again.

The first-year student at Ivy League Brown University emerged the champion on Friday in the two-day final round of the college edition of America’s most popular quiz show televised nation-wide. He faced another Indian-American, Rishab Jain, in the semi-final round last week before getting to the finals. Gaur had scored a perfect score

About his plans for the winnings, a Jeopardy news release quoted him as saying, “I’m just going to save it until I need it for grad school or to pursue an opportunity I might really want in the future.” “My little brother is really interested in investing, so I’ll give him some so he can give the stock market a go,” he added. NO HUNG ASSEMBLY: MODI The ‘buzz’ just the propaganda of Congress, says the prime minister IANS, KARNATAKA

P

rime Minister Narendra Modi on April 26 ruled out any possibility of a hung assembly in Karnata-

ka. The Prime Minister alleged that the “buzz” about a hung assembly was just the propaganda of the “well-wishers” of the Congress to disillusion the people who want change through the upcoming assembly elections. In an interaction with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates who are in the fray for the May 12 Karnataka Assembly polls and party office bearers through the Narendra Modi App, Modi said a full majority government is necessary for the all round development of the state. “As the people of Karnataka have decided to bring change in the state, a lie is being spread by some people, who are well wishers of Congress or though Congress, they want to fulfil their own wishes, that there will be a hung assembly in the state this time,” he said. “Such lies were being spread even during 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Till the results were out, they did

this. This was nothing but a conspiracy to disillusion the people who wanted change,” he said. “We got the full majority government at the Centre after 30 years and we have been able to end policy paralysis by taking decisions and give a good name of the country across the globe,” he said. “They are hatching conspiracies because people of Karnataka want

to join hands with Delhi for development. They want to contribute to the Centre’s pledge of transforming the country into new India by 2022,” he said. Accusing the Congress of fighting the elections by propagating falsehoods, he said the central government has left no stone unturned for the development of Karnataka.

“They fight elections on the basis of lies, money power, casteism and nepotism. They try to divide the society by spreading the poison of caste. The BJP believes in mantra of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat and Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas,” he said. Interacting with the party cadres, the Prime Minister through a power point presentation also drew a comparison of the pace of implementation of central schemes in the state with the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime. “In Karnataka, close to Rs 14,000 crore of road works are under progress. While we constructed 1,750 km of highways in four years, for Karnataka, UPA had only built half of this,” he said drawing a similar comparison with other schemes. He said had the Siddaramaiahled Karnataka government not indulged in petty politics and extended full cooperation, the state could have achieved even better figures. “I want to add more pace to our development works in Karnataka. I need your support for this to happen,” he said.

3,374 file nominations for Karnataka polls BENGALURU: A whopping 3,374 candidates have filed nominations for the May 12 Karnataka assembly elections, as per the revised figures from the Election Commission released on April 25. According to the ECs data, of the total nominees, 250 were from the ruling Congress, 282 from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), 231 from Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S), 1,673 from Independents and 938 from regional parties and fringe outfits. Nominations, which began on April 17 after the elections in a single phase across the state was notified, ended on Tuesday. The Congress party has fielded a total of 16 women, BJP 17 and JD-S 14. In addition, 90 women have filed their nominations as Independents from various constituencies. The EC is yet to release the list of accepted nominations after its scrutiny on Wednesday. Polling will be held in a single phase for all the 224 seats, including 36 reserved for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 15 for Scheduled Tribes (STs). Votes will be counted on May 15. — IANS

Jayalalithaa. On Wednesday, the court had ordered Apollo Hospital to submit a report on the blood samples of Jayalalithaa, who was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016 and died on December 5 that year. he Madras High Court on April 26 ordered a CBI probe into the multi-crore gutka scam in which a minister and top state police officers and government officials are alleged to be involved. Leaders of various opposition parties have welcomed the court order and also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister K. Palaniswami’s government. The court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe following a petition filed by DMK legislator J. Anbazhagan. The case is related to an Income Tax Department raid in the offices, residences and godowns of a gutka manufacturer in Tamil Nadu in 2016. A diary was then seized which listed alleged bribe payments made to various officials. The Tamil Nadu government has banned the manufacture and storage of gutka -- a tobacco product. However, the product was reportedly available in the market with the alleged connivance of police officers and others. Several political parties had demanded the CBI probe into the scam but the AIADMK govern-

ment did not agree. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran met Chief Minister Palaniswami, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi soon after the court order. Welcoming the High Court order, PMK leader Anbumani

Ramadoss demanded Palaniswami’s resignation. In order to allow the CBI probe to progress smoothly, the Palaniswami government should resign, he said. DMK Leader M.K. Stalin said gutka was openly sold during late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s rule and under Palaniswami’s rule.

Stalin said an English television channel had reported bribes were allegedly paid to top police officials. Stalin added the issue was raised by him in the state Assembly he and several of his party members were sent out. Speaker P. Dhanapal termed it as breach of privilege for bringing a banned substance into the Assembly. The issue was referred to Privilege Committee which had issued a notice to Stalin and some DMK law makers. “We had obtained a stay against that notice,” Stalin said. According to Stalin, if the CBI probe should proceed smoothly then Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar, DGP T.K. Rajendran should resign from their respective posts. Adding further, Stalin said Chief Minister Palaniswami should quit his post so that people are benefitted. Similarly, the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) Tamil Nadu State Secretary R. Mutharasan said the CBI probe should be under the supervision of the High Court. He also said the minister and other officials alleged to be involved in the scam should quit their posts.

CHICAGO AWAITS

SALMAN KHAN Bhavesh Patel, a prominent name in the community is the youngest ever international promoter of a Bollywood show held on such a large scale. Da- Bangg Reloaded, the tour, packs a powerful punch with 8 superstars and a mighty crew of 150 people. The show will be staged across 9 cities in the US and Canada and is so far said to be the most expensive and technically sound show in the history of live Bollywood entertainment events in the country. Managing and executing such a massive show has been an enormous but satisfying responsibility for Bhavesh Patel. As the preparations for the mammoth show reach its final climax, Bhavesh, takes out time from his hectic schedule to chat with Hi India on the makings of Da-Bangg Reloaded. The young promoter guarantees that it will be a show like never before!

By Zofeen Maqsood It may be a special moment for Chicagoans particularly, as the one man who is ensuring everything runs smooth and the audiences get their dose of entertainment is none other than Chicago based Bhavesh Patel. As the international promoter of the Da-Bangg Reloaded Tour, Bhavesh Patel, is the promoter for all the shows in the US and Canada. A busy man these days he’s just back in the city after completing his recce to LA one of the 9 states where the high-profile tour would be performing. Bhavesh is a known name amongst the South Asian community in the country as he successfully runs the very famous Sahil boutique in Devon started by his dad Babu Patel. The family has also been involved in some of the biggest entertainment shows to the US. But Bhavesh acknowledges that the current tour is a big duty he has to execute flawlessly as none other than Salman himself has bestowed this responsibility on him. Bhavesh says, “call it Da-Bangg Reloaded and it brings along many new things for the audiences in US and Canada. It is for the first time that Katrina Kaif is a part of the show. We have totally re-formatted the show. The stage, the costumes, the acts everything has been re-

S

alman Khan, the heartthrob of millions, destiny’s child and the superstar who will be remembered in the history of cinema for the unprecedented star power that he commands, will be back in Chicago after 12 long yeas to perform live for his fans. The Da-Bangg Reloaded Tour that promises to be a unique threehour extravaganza that will be touring USA and Canada beginning June 22 is one of most awaited live Bollywood events across the globe currently. While, Salman remains the highlight of the show, it will also be the first time ever that Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan will be seen live on stage at a tour. The tour that begins in Atlanta on June 22, hits Chicago on June 23. While the power-packed star show is already making news in Chicago and all across the US, but it may be a special moment for Chicagoans particularly, as the one man who is ensuring everything runs smooth and the audiences get their dose of entertainment is none other than Chicago based Bhavesh Patel. As the international promoter of the Da-Bangg Reloaded Tour, Bhavesh Patel is being working day and night to put everything to perfection but is quick to credit it all to the magic of Salman Khan. He also is all praises for all his promoters across centers who he says believed in him and made the show possible on such a large scale.

It was Salman’s idea

Bhavesh who has known Salman khan for about 25 years now, says that their families share a very special relationship. “He’s like family to us and has always been extremely loving towards us,” says Bhavesh talking with a visible fondness for the superstar. On how this idea of bringing the tour to the US came about, Bhavesh says, “It was basically Salman’s idea.” He says, “I remember that I was at Salman’s house. We were all having tea and talking about shows. And just then, Salman said:’ I want to do shows again. I want to connect with my fans.’ So, it was actually Salman’s desire to reconnect with his fans that set the wheels in motion for the Dabangg tour.” He adds, “The shows were first held in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia and then Salman said, let’s do it in US and Canada. That’s when he told me that you are doing my show. In my head, I was thinking that I would be doing the show in Chicago but he told me to be the promoter for the entire US and Canada. So, I was in fact summoned to do this show, which I gladly and earnestly accepted.

choreographed. There is a new script to the show. So, no one can get a feeling that they have seen a similar show before. It is going to be a totally new experience”. Bhavesh says, “I wouldn’t deny that when the news of Salman’s arrest came, we were stressed. It did send the promoters and the people who had bought the tickets and were planning to buy the tickets in a semi panic mode. However, we believed that things will fall in place and they did. I want to reassure all the fans that the show is as per schedule, people who are planning to buy the tickets must know that everything will fall in place. We are not foreseeing any hiccups.” Bhavesh informs that Salman absolutely loves Chicago. Unfortunately, this time the stay in Chicago is very short. They just land in Chicago from Atlanta and the very next day they travel to Texas. So, we won’t have so much time to take him around in the city. But he’s been here 5-6 times and loves the vibe of the city. He likes to go to the downtown but more than anything else he loves spending time with his friends. Bhavesh who is the youngest national promoter informs that they have taken care to keep the prices affordable. He says a $60 ticket will give you a decent view and in some centers the ticket prices are as less as $39.

destinations or may have caught glimpses of it on You Tube etc. So, in order to give the audiences a totally new, unseen experience he informs that the US and Canada has been totally re-thought. He says, “We call it Da-Bangg Reloaded and it bring along many new things for the audiences in US and Canada. It is for the first time that Katrina Kaif is a part of the show. We have totally re-formatted the show. The stage, the costumes, the acts everything has been rechoreographed. There is a new script to the show.

The preparations are in full swing

Managing superstars and their entourage is no easy task. The entire Da-Bangg crew of 150 people arrive in the US, 3 days ahead. On how is Patel ensuring that all the logistics and management is taken care of, he says, “Yes, it’s a mammoth task. We have 8 stars including Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonakshi Sinha, Prabhu Deva, Daisy Shah, Guru Randhawa and Manish Paul. Along with them technicians, staff, production managers comprise of about 150 people. We have been on the project for last 2 years and now we are in the final three-month phase. Thankfully, I have an efficient team who have been taking care of everything from airline tickets to hotel bookings. We are constantly re-checking that everything is in order. But I do believe that all my promoters nationwide are doing a great job.” He admits, “As a promoter there are always challenges but we have done everything to ensure a fantastic show. We have also got on board PRG Worldwide Entertainment Technology Solutions, that lead in entertainment technology globally to be our production partners to ensure a flawless experience. We were originally planning 5 shows but now we are doing 9 shows that says a lot about people’s interest in the show.” He adds, “For my national tour, it would not have been possible without the support of my local promoters.”

On Salman’s recent arrest

While preparations were underway for the big Salman Khan show the news of his recent arrest in the blackbuck case must have come as a shock for many. Bhavesh says, “I wouldn’t deny that when the news of Salman’s arrest came, we were stressed. It did send the promoters and the people who had bought the tickets and people who were planning to buy the tickets in a semi panic mode. However, we believed that things will fall in place and they did. I want to reassure all the fans that the show is as per schedule, people who are planning to buy the tickets must know that everything will fall in place. We are not foreseeing any hiccups. I want to thank all my promoters who believed in me. And for the fans we wish to tell them that in any unforeseen situation their money will be refunded to them.”

Being Salman Khan

And now that the big news of Salman in the US is travelling far and wide is Bhavesh getting any crazy requests from fans. Bhavesh laughs

etal Patel, of HP Live Events who will be presenting the show in Chicago along with Lucky Day LLC, a local gaming company is upbeat about the show. He says, “I am very sure that it will be a houseful show.” Hetal Patel who has been involved with other live shows in Chicago has earlier brought Falguni Pathak, Sonu Nigam, Atif Aslam and the famous Dream Team show. Talking about the Chicago edition of the show, he says, “This time I have taken the front seat and I am bringing along a lot changes. We have simplified the pricing of tickets and have kept it very affordable. We are very transparent about everything. In the recent situation, when Salman was arrested, we guaranteed personally that people would get their money back. What makes me confident about this show is that Salman Khan is coming to the US after more than a decade for a show. Both Indians and Pakistanis are his die-hard fans.” About taking up the responsibility he says, “I had been following the show and took over this show last year when I became a promoter for Bhavesh Patel. I must inform my audiences that the front row tickets in Chicago are the most affordable than anywhere and we are honestly promising what we aim to provide to the audiences. There are no empty promises of star photos like sometimes happens in live shows. Hetal Patel, who has been an independent business owner for last 23 years and owns 7/11 stores and gas stations is passionate about Bollywood. He says, “Entertainment is in my blood and I enjoyed Bollywood since childhood. Until now I was the audience and today when I am promoting the show I exactly know the psyche of the audience. We guarantee a wholesome, clean entertainment presented with a lot of love and passion and we are sure fans will love every moment of it.”

knowing Salman personally, Bhavesh says that he has noticed a special star quality in him. “If Salman is at the airport or at a public place and when the situation allows he will stop and oblige the fans. He is a great people’s person. He is a great humanitarian and has a heart of gold. He never forgets people who have stood by him through the ups and downs. And his fan following ranges from 5 year olds to 70 year olds. In fact, extends beyond nationalities. For this show we are seeing interest from not just South Asians but also Americans and others too.

Entertainment business

On how the Patel family forayed into the entertainment business, Bhavesh says, “My father, Mr Babu Patel, got associated with live shows back in the 80’s in Houston. He did shows that had Rishi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Padmini Kolhapuri. By mid 80’s we move to Chicago and my dad continued to do shows. We started Sahil but continued in entertainment too. Recalling his first landmark show, Bhavesh says, “In 1992, we did a show with Aamir and Salman, just after Andaz Apna Apna.” He adds, “For my national tour, it would not have been possible without the support of my local promoters. And locally till date all events we have presented with our partners Nick and Mayur Patel of LA TAN. Their support has been invaluable for me.” On the upcoming Da-Bangg show, Bhavesh says, “It’s going to be a full paisa vasool show. Salman will be on stage for an hour and he is personally taking interest in every planning. He just called me the other day to check how the things are moving and he’s really involved in the show.”

Kidney cancer: Screening tests need of hour

BY DR. NILESH D. MEHTA HICAGO, IL -- One of my clinic patients recently asked me, “Why was my kidney cancer not diagnosed earlier?” Diagnosis of cancer is made in earlier stages when we can screen for the disease. In breast cancer, we have screening guidelines with mammography in women and this strategy has been shown to save lives. A blood test, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) in men performed annually has been shown to detect prostate cancer at an earlier stage and has made an impact in reducing mortality in this disease. Similarly, in Cervix cancer in women, PAP smears performed regularly has had a similar favorable result in reducing death rates from this cancer. Colonoscopy done in patients over the age of 50 also detects colorectal cancer in earlier stages which contributes to favorable results. Why don’t we do screening tests for kidney cancer? In the United States, there are approximately 65,000 new annual cases of kidney cancer and nearly 15,000 deaths yearly related to this disease. For a successful screening test for cancer diagnosis in the general population, we need to have a test which can be utilized for the masses to detect early cancers. Performing a Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scan on a repeated basis would expose patients to radiation and cumulatively it potentially could have an additive detrimental effect. Risks and benefits of screening tests have to be taken into consideration when doctors advise screening for less common cancers. At present, there are no screening tests approved for kidney cancer.

Risk Factors: Kidney cancer is 50 per cent more common in men than women. It is usually detected in the sixth to eighth decade of life. Cigarette smoking is associated with an increased risk of developing kidney cancer.

and fever. These symptoms are vague and do not necessarily suggest malignancy in all patients. Patients need to seek medical care if they are experiencing any of these symptoms.

High blood pressure, obesity, occupational exposure to certain chemicals have also been found to be risk factors. Symptoms: Patients with kidney cancer can present with or without symptoms. Often times, patients are getting tested for other diseases with ultrasound for their gall bladder or abdominal pain and incidentally kidney tumors are detected. This leads to further diagnostic testing and ultimately a diagnosis of kidney cancer is made. In the early stages of the disease, patients often times do not experience any symptoms. At later stages, patients can experience back pain, blood in urine, weight loss, anaemia,

My patient: This 55-year-old male while traveling to India developed low back pain. He took some over the counter medicines without any relief. Upon his return, he had an MRI of his spine to figure out his spine abnormality. A slipped disc was suspected based on his symptoms. The MRI confirmed a disc problem, however, there was an unfortunate surprise with a detection of right sided kidney tumor measuring five cm. He went to see a specialist surgeon who removed part of his right kidney with laparoscopic robotic surgery. Good news for him was that the cancer was confined to the kidney and he will not need any additional treatment. He will need surveillance CAT scans to be done every few months to ensure that there is no spread in the future. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The advice to patients is always to maintain a balance in their lifestyle by sticking to the basics of good nutrition, exercise, moderation in alcohol consumption, eliminating nicotine consumption and regular check-ups with their health care provider.

Asian Pacific Islander award for Neil Khot

BY A STAFF WRITER EARLAND, TX – An Indian American store clerk from Pearland, Texas was arrested on April 17 for allegedly hiring a hit man to kill his ex-girlfriend and three others. The suspect, Rajesh Bakshi, 54, made his first appearance in court two days later. He was been charged with four counts of solicitation of capital murder, and faces life in prison if he is convicted. Prosecutors had asked for bail to be set at $250,000 for each count, but Bakshi’s public defender noted at his probable cause hearing that he has a history of health issues, including diabetes and neurological orders. She asked that bail be set at $30,000 for each person Bakshi targeted. A judge set bail for $150,000 for each count and mandated that–should he make bail–Bakshi, who is an Indian citizen, must surrender all travel documents. According to a report by the Harris County, Texas District Attorney’s office, Bakshi–who has a wife, twin daughters and a teenage son–had dated the girlfriend for some time before she broke it off. He then started a pattern of harassment for months and was allegedly violent with her, according to court papers. After continuing to be rejected, he sought to have the girlfriend, her parents, and her new boyfriend shot and killed. The hit-man Bakshi allegedly hired was an undercover cop. The suspect arranged to pay him $15,000 to kill all four, and to sprinkle cocaine on their bodies, with Bakshi also asking for photos of the dead victims. The police arrested Bakshi when he gave the undercover cop the first instalment of $1,500 for the contract killing. Prosecutors noted that he had $13,000 in cash on his person at the time of his arrest. In court, Bakshi’s public defender noted that the suspect earned about $1,400 a month working at the Dixie Corner Store. He lives in Pearland with relatives, she said.

CHITA’s Telangana cultural fete is a hit BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL – The Chicago Telangana Association (CHITA) celebrated its biggest-ever Telangana Cultural festival on April 14 with over 800 Chicago Area NRIs attending the event at Metea Valley High School auditorium, Aurora, Illinois. The four-hour fete was packed with more than 40 songs, dances and other programs. One of the main attractions at the event was Telangana backdrop photo booth. The Metea Valley auditorium stage was beautifully decorated for the event. Suchitra Reddy and CHITA general secretary Nelima Akula were hosts for the program. The event started with a sumptuous dinner supported by Cool Mirchi, one of the long-time sponsors of CHITA events. After the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, the scintillating evening began with songs and dances performed by local talent from small kids to adults numbering 103, who performed in about 40 different programs. The first cultural program was ‘Jallantha Kavvintha’ sung by Madhavilatha followed by a classical kuchipudi dance. The highlight of the evening was various entertainment programs by children of all ages. Raja Krishnamoorthy, US representative for Illinois 8th congressional district, graced the occasion and wished everyone. He appreciated the efforts of CHITA to promote the Telangana culture with events like Telangana Cultural Night as well as Bathukamma. Manoj Kondam, president of CHITA, explained how the organization started and how it is working tirelessly to promote the Telangana culture in Chicago Area.

Exploding myths about heart health in Indians

C Vittal Eravelli, vice president of CHITA, thanked all the sponsors and volunteers who were also invited on the stage. He said the event would not have been possible without the hard work of the volunteers and generous sponsors. CHITA has been conducting Telangana events for the past 15 years, this being the

11th year. Chicago Telanganites held the first such Telangana-based cultural night way back in 2006 when some 30 families came together and celebrated the Telangana culture. It was a unique and innovative initiative. Now the concept later caught on and grew tremendously, not only in Chicago, but also in other cities.

By GAYATHRI BADRINATH HICAGO, IL -- Recently, I accepted a seat on the board of WomenHeart, an organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of heart disease for women. In honor of Minority Health Month, I’d like to take the opportunity to drive a call to action to influential Indian leaders, who are at the helm of companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Novartis. The exploding public health challenge of heart disease in Indians should be a visible corporate and social priority. We need Indian leaders at the helm of organizations and their workforces full of brilliant scientific and technology talent of Indian heritage to be operating at the top of their health. Indians are the second-fastest growing minority in the United States and represent one-fifth of the world’s population. Studies show that Indians have a three to four times higher risk of heart disease and are more likely to die from a heart attack before the age of 50 than other populations. Furthermore, as we navigate the complex issues surrounding gender disparity, we need to examine critically our approach to women’s heart health. One study showed that Indian women in California were dying at a 44 percent higher rate of heart attacks than our white counterparts. Solving this problem includes driving initiatives towards not only things that we can change such as diet and lifestyle choices but also to increasing our understanding of genetic causes and translating this knowledge into therapeutic targets for drug and device development. A common misconception among Indians is that all vegetarian diets are low-fat and nutritionally rich. This myth must be busted and much more education needs to happen on how to optimize the Indian diet, vegetarian or not. The addition of certain oils during preparation, salt and sugar can dramatically reduce the nutritional content. Published data from a study involving more than 8,000 South Indians showed excessive dietary sodium intake was an independent predictor of high blood pressure. The jury is still out on the benefits and drawbacks of ghee, a form of clarified butter common in the Indian diet. While some see ghee as a key factor in driving heart disease risk, others claim ghee intake could be therapeutic. Shifting from a diet heavy in simple carbohydrates such as white rice to more complex and nutritionally rich grains is a reasonable starting point. Strategies such as eliminating white rice, a staple in the Indian diet are likely to fail. I recall my parents telling me when doctors had counseled them to take such actions. Although perhaps a scientifically-valid recommendation, this type of feedback lacks appreciation of cultural and social norms. Culturally-sensitive intervention is critical. One study showed significant improvements in knowledge and perceptions about heart disease prevention in South Asians exposed to culturespecific multimedia education. (Gayathri Badrinath is a global commercial leader who serves on the Board of Directors at WomenHeart.)

were seamless in their musical interplay as well as prolific in their musical gifts. Exuding humility along with a history of reverence for Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, the two transformed an event hall into a musical sanctuary and wonderland, with even the youngest in the audience transfixed from beginning to end. The performance highlighted the variation of their musical artistry and virtuosity, in technique as well as expression, precision and fusion.

The concert drew a wide range of support both in terms of social groups and geographic proximity far as Toronto, Madison, Cleveland and the greater Chicago area. Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi (or Amma) will be visiting the MA Center in Elburn from June 24-26. Public programs for all three days include music, teaching, meditation, food, environmental education, international volunteer opportunities, and more.

Drinking water may enhance mental skills in exercising elderly NEW YORK: Older people indulging in physical activity should increase their water intake to reap the full cognitive benefits of exercise, researchers say. Dehydration has been shown to impair exercise performance and brain function in young people, but less is known about its impact on older people. The findings showed that hydration boosts performance on test of execu-

tive function that includes the skills needed to plan, focus, remember and multitask following exercise. Exercise has been shown to improve intellectual health, including executive function. “Middle-age and older adults often display a blunted thirst perception, which places them at risk for dehydration and subsequently may reduce the cognitive health-related

benefits of exercise,” said researchers including Brandon Yates, of Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, US. The study, presented at the American Physiological Society (APS) annual meeting at Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego, explored the association between hydration status before exercising and exercise-enhanced cognition in older adults.

ebunking the ‘myth’ that strenuous exercise increases infection risk by suppressing the immune system, a new study says competing in endurance sports like marathon running may actually be beneficial for upping immunity. “It is increasingly clear that changes happening to your immune system after a strenuous bout of exercise do not leave your body immune-suppressed,” said study coauthor John Campbell from University of Bath in Britain. “In fact, evidence now suggests that your immune system is boosted after exercise — for example we know that exercise can improve your immune response to a flu jab,” Campbell added.

since the 1980s, this new review study, published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, has reinterpreted the findings. The researchers explained that for competitors taking part in endurance sports, exercise causes immune cells to change in two ways. This novel technique can help make drugs ‘smarter’ LONDON: Scientists have developed a new technique to bind proteins to nanoparticles that can help make drugs “smarter” and more effective at reaching their target. The new technique decorates gold nanoparticles with a protein of choice so that they can be used to tailor drug to more accurately target an area on the body, such as a cancer tumor. Gold nanoparticles are spheres made of gold atoms having a diameter of only few billionths of a meter which can be coated with a biological protein and combined with drugs to enable the treatment to travel through the body and reach the affected area.

“Gold nanoparticles are a vital tool in new drug development and drug delivery systems. We have unlocked the key to binding proteins and molecules so that those drugs will be more effective,” said Enrico Ferrari, a nanobiotechnologist from Britain’s University of Lincoln. Until now, the proteins used to coat the nanoparticles had to be mixed together with particles which do not have the ability to control the way they bind, possibly making the drug less effective. However, the new method, published in the journal Nature Communications, enables pharmacologists to place the proteins onto the gold nanoparticles layer by layer in a specific order.

Hay fever may up mental disorder risk TAIPEI: Patients suffering from asthma and hay fever may be at increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, a new study says. The findings published in the journal Frontiers suggested almost 11 percent of patients with common allergic diseases developed a psychiatric disorder within a 15-year period, compared to only 6.7 percent of those without — a 1.66-fold increased risk. “Asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and atopic dermatitis (eczema), are among some of the most common allergic diseases and are nicknamed the three ‘A’s,” said lead author Nian-Sheng Tzeng from the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan. While previous studies have linked allergies with certain psychiatric or emotional disorders, this is the first study to find a connection between common allergies and the overall risk of developing psychiatric disorders, the researchers said.

Low antibiotic level can up resistance IANS, LONDON

E

ven low concentrations of antibiotics can cause resistance to develop in bacteria, a global and growing problem in health care. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria change, in response to the use of these medicines, that are taken to prevent and treat bacterial infections. The study showed that, over time, bacteria exposed to low doses of antibiotics developed resistance to antibiotic levels that were more than a thousand times higher than the initial level to which the bacteria were subjected. The mutations in the bacterial DNA that cause resistance are of a different type than if they have been exposed to high doses, the researchers said. "The results are interesting

because they show that the very low antibiotic concentrations present in many environments, too, can lead to a high degree of resistance and contribute to the problem of resistance," said lead author Dan I Andersson, a Professor at the Uppsala University in Sweden. In the study, published in Nature Communications, the researchers

investigated how prolonged exposure to low levels of antibiotics contributes to the development of bacterial antibiotic resistance. During a course of antibiotics, a high proportion of the antibiotic dose is excreted in the urine in unchanged, active form, and can then spread into watercourses, lakes, and soil in the wastewater.

‘Kesari’ set gutted 10 days before film’s completion

NEW YORK: Deepika Padukone, one of the highest paid actors in the Indian film industry, says women must not shy away Deepika Padukone from demanding and even fighting for the pay they think they deserve. The actress, who attended the TIME 100 gala, spoke to Time magazine about the need for confidence among women to ask for better pay. “You can feel a sense of - am I stepping over the line, do I deserve it? But if you believe you deserve it, then you do,” said Deepika.

‘Have to change notion of masculinity’ MUMBAI: Actor Ranbir Kapoor has said the notion of masculinity has to be changed to empower women. Ranbir said this while interacting with the media along with Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor Shabana Azmi, and Manish Malhotra. On asking his idea of empowering the women of the country and securing equal rights for them, Ranbir said: “I think firstly, we have to change the notion of —IANS masculinity.”

fire broke out on the sets of Akshay Kumars film Kesari, destroying the whole set just ten days before the film was expected to wrap up. However, no one was injured. A source in the know of developments told IANS that Akshay had already left for the day when the incident took place at the set in Wai, over 200 km away from here by road. “They were shooting a crucial war scene when everyone heard a blast sound, which triggered the fire. The mishap occurred just 10 days

before the team was about to wrap the film’s schedule after shooting the climax. “The explosion was a massive one, but not a single person from the crew was injured,” the source said. It is not known yet what the makers will do now that the set has been destroyed.

call. The comment comes in the wake of a debate which got intensified after southern actress Sri Reddy caused a stir by sitting seminaked on a road in Hyderabad to protest against the casting couch menace in the film world.

Chowdhury supported Khan, saying: “Yes, it is the bitter truth. The whole film industry may get up in arms against me. It’s just not in the film industry also, this happens everywhere in work spaces with women.

Biopic is a totally different monster, says director Rajkumar Hirani MUMBAI: Filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, who launched the muchawaited teaser of Sanju — a film on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt — says the experience of making a biopic is very different from a regular future film especially at the scripting level. Since this is the first time that the filmmaker has made a biopic, that too on a colorful celebrity like Sanjay, who is not only successful and inspirational as a film star but has also had a controversial past, Hirani found it tough. “I think biopic is a totally different monster altogether because you don’t have a total control over it.

When you write a fresh script, a regular story, you have control over it. It is your story... you can turn the flow of your characters in whichever way you want. That’s not the case with a biopic,” Hirani told the media. “I think we would not have been able to write the story from our imagination, and the best thing is that Sanjay has given us the access to his story and all the anecdotes,” he added. —IANS

Momina Mustehsan urges Ali Zafar to apologize

‘There’s a drama queen in me’

P

opular singer Neha Kakkar, who features in her latest music video Oh Humsafar with actor Himansh Kohli, says there has been a streak of a drama queen in her since childhood. Neha and Himansh praised each other whole-heartedly and said they would love to collaborate again. Himansh told IANS: “This is my first music video and the song has a lovely melody. It a beautiful romantic number. This collaboration will remain a special one. I think apart from singing, Neha could be a good actress. Her screen presence is engaging and I think she should start acting in films.” Floored by the praise, Neha said: “We are the best of buddies and we really love and care for each other. I think that equation has translated on-screen in the video.”

P

opular singer Momina Mustehsan has urged actor Ali Zafar and all men who have violated a woman in any way, to acknowledge their fault and apologize unconditionally. Mustehsaan posted an open letter on social media, admitting that she has been a subject of harassment herself. She shared her thoughts after singer-actor Meesha Shafi openly hit out at actor Ali Zafar of sexual harassment — a claim he has denied. However, Shafi’s statement sparked Pakistan’s own #MeToo movement earlier this week. “This issue is bigger than just that of Ali Zafar,” Mustehsan wrote. “This is about the relationship of trust that men take for granted with women. Very often, as we can see, women are violated by the men they know, trust and often work with,” she added.

Ranveer thanks Zoya Akhtar for ‘Gully Boy’

A

ctor Ranveer Singh, who has just wrapped up shooting for Gully Boy, has thanked the film’s director for the unique experience. Ranveer shared a photograph of himself along with Zoya and called her his “bae”. “Bae and I made for each other. I love you Zoya Akhtar. Thank you for this unique and unforgettable experience Gully Boy,” Ranveer captioned the image. The movie also stars actress Alia Bhatt. This will be the first time Ranveer and Alia will be seen working together. The story of Gully Boy revolves around street rappers from Mumbai. The movie is backed by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment.

Shahid Kapoor to be a father again

B

ollywood actor Shahid Kapoor last week announced he and his wife Mira Rajput are expecting their second child. The couple took an innovative route to announce Mira’s pregnancy with an Instagram picture of their first-born daughter Misha lying beside a drawing of balloons with ‘Big Sister’ written along with it. Shahid and Mira, who have a 12year age gap, tied the knot in New Delhi on July 7, 2015. They welcomed their first baby in August 2016. The versatile actor, who has proved his versatility in Bollywood with roles in films like Jab We Met, Kaminey and Udta Punjab, has been a doting dad to Misha. And Mira, who is from Delhi, has been devoted to bringing up their daughter.

Kriti is Bata’s new brand ambassador

B

ollywood actress Kriti Sanon has been announced as the brand ambassador of Bata India. It is after 21 years that the footwear brand has finalized a Bollywood face post it’s association with Rani Mukerji. “Bata is an iconic brand, and I have been a big fan of Bata shoes since early childhood. So, I was delighted when Bata approached me to be the face of their brand. And the delight turned into surprise when I saw the stylish and fashionable collection that they have introduced for the women of today. “It’s amazing to see the new fashion-forward avatar of Bata and I am excited about creating something special together. At heart, I am a Bata girl, who subscribes to the brand motto Me & Comfortable with it,” Kriti said in a statement. (All stories from IANS)
