Dems register key wins in Virginia, NJ
They scored two significant victories by exploiting Trump’s deep unpopularity to capture the governorships IANS, WASHINGTON
I
n a setback to US President Donald Trump, Democrats have scored two significant victories in the US by exploiting President Donald Trump’s deep unpopularity to capture the governorships in Virginia and New Jersey. In Virginia, Ralph Northam defeated Republican Ed Gillespie in a race marked by tussles on immigration and Confederate statues, according to the results published by the Department of Elections this week. Northam, a physician and Army veteran, led Gillespie by nearly nine percentage points with 99 per cent of precincts reporting, the widest victory in decades for a Democratic candidate for Governor of Virginia, The New York Times reported. The Democrat offered to work with Trump after previously calling him “a narcissistic maniac”. Northam also vowed to lead efforts to remove Confederate statues, only to say later that he would leave the decision to local authorities. Gillespie, a Washington lobbyist and former Republican party chairman, had accused Northam of failing to curb gang violence and

seeking to tear down statues honouring Civil War, pro-slavery secessionists. “Tonight we proved that we’re stronger when we value and fight for one another,” Northam said on Twitter after his win. Trump, who had supported Gillespie, criticized him for not fully embracing him during the race. “Ed Gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what I stand for,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday evening.
In New Jersey, Phil Murphy, a former Goldman Sachs executive, beat Kim Guadagno to be New Jersey Governor. With 71 per cent of ballots counted, Murphy had won 55.6 per cent, while Guadagno had secured 42.5 per cent. New York City’s Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio was also comfortably re-elected. He won over Republican state lawmaker Nicole Malliotakis, of Staten Island, and several third-party candidates.
HAVANA: The Cuban government has said that US restrictions on travel and business with Havana represent a serious setback to bilateral relations. The measures, which took effect effect on November 9, enact the memorandum signed in June by US President Donald Trump, in which he expressed his intention to reverse his predecessor Barack Obama’s detente with Cuba, reports Efe news. The director for the US Division at Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Josefina Vidal, said in a statement that the new regulations would hurt both Cuba’s economy and US business interests. “Has it worked in 55 years? It’s the old line: ‘We sanctioned Cuba, we put pressure on its government to bring about changes’. It does not work. It has never worked.
“They will harm not only the state and non-state sectors of our economy, but also the citizens of the US” who will see their right to travel to Cuba become “even more restricted”, Vidal said. Among the measures is the ban on transactions with 179 companies and entities, including hotels, shops, tourist agencies, shipyards and even brands of soda and rum. The measures follow the expulsion of 15 Cuban diplomats from the US in October after 22 of its own embassy officials in Havana fell ill after mysterious sonic attacks. Trump said last month that he believed that the Cuban government was behind the attacks. Washington, however, has accused Havana of failing to protect US diplomatic personnel working on Cuban territory. — IANS
Syria joins Paris climate pact, US stands alone Americans counter fossil fuel agenda BONN: With the Trump administration sticking to its stand on rescinding climate protection actions, American organizations have announced to counter the fossil fuel agenda and to hold US states, cities, businesses and the public accountable to commitments to climate action. The US groups comprising community and grassroots leaders announced the formation of a platform named “US People’s Delegation” at COP23 here. The platform includes youth, indigenous people, frontline communities, advocates and policymakers who have come to Bonn with organizations from across the United States. — IANS

S
yria has announced it will join the Paris climate agreement, leaving the US as the only country in the world which has not signed on to the landmark deal. Syrian officials announced their intention to ratify the accord at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, this week CNN reported. “This is the very last country that actually announced, so everyone has joined and the US is now so isolated,” said Safa Al Jayoussi, Executive Director of IndyAct, an environmental organization based in Lebanon that works with Arab countries on climate change. Syria’s Deputy Minister of Local Administration and Environment M. Wadah Katmawi said that developed countries “in their capacity as the primary contribu-

tors to climate change, should live up to their legal and humanitarian responsibility” by offering technical and financial support to developing countries to help battle climate change. The Syria People’s Assembly voted to approve ratifica-
tion of the agreement last month, according to the country’s staterun media outlet SANA. Roua Shurbaji, a spokeswoman at the Syrian mission to the United Nations, said the country’s decision was part of an effort “to be
effective in all international areas including climate change”. “We will get there,” Shurbaji was quoted as saying by the New York Times. “We are in the process of becoming part of the agreement. We will have our commitments and targets.” Syria, plunged in a civil war, was not present at the 2015 negotiations for the climate agreement, which is dedicated to lowering emissions and strengthening countries’ abilities to deal with the effects of climate change. Nearly 200 countries signed on the pact at the time. However, the Central American country recently announced its intent to join the agreement. In late October, Nicaraguan Vice President and First Lady Rosario Murillo said the nation had submitted a “document of adhesion” to the UN to join the pact.

When Shiv Sena praised Rahul Gandhi The Sena has never taken kindly to the BJP replacing it as the number one party in Maharashtra in 2014 AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
O
ne of the oddities of the current political scene is the compliments which the Shiv Sena has been paying to Rahul Gandhi. The party’s spokesman, Sanjay Raut, noted recently how the Congress vice-president’s “body language” has changed for the better and expressed faith in his credentials to lead the country since the Modi wave has “faded away”. As an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Sena would not have been expected to be so forthcoming in its admiration for Rahul Gandhi even if it has come to regard the BJP as an enemy, as Raut has said, and called it “ghotalebaaz” or scamster in a booklet. The surprise over the Sena’s latest position is all the greater because it is by no means considered close to the Congress, although a BJP leader has said that the Sainiks have always had a soft corner for the Congress ever since their supremo Bal Thackeray supported the Emergency. The
Sena did support the Congress’s presidential candidate, Pratibha Patil, in 2007 instead of the BJP’s Bhairon Singh Shekhawat because she is Marathi, which is the only thing that counts for the Sena. But hailing Rahul Gandhi as a possible Prime Minister denotes a completely different approach unless the Sena plans to walk out of the alliance with the BJP in
in 2014 since it apparently regards that position, along with the Chief Minister’s post as its birthright in case the Hindutva group wins. The Sena could not but have noted how the BJP is concentrating nearly all its attention on criticizing someone whom it earlier used to derisively dismiss as the “shahzada” and who was lampooned as “Pappu” by the BJP’s
The surprise over the Sena’s latest position is all the greater because it is by no means considered close to the Congress Maharashtra and at the Centre. Considering that the Sena chief, Uddhav Thackeray, has called upon his party men to prepare for elections, the possibility of a formal rupture between the two saffron outfits cannot be ruled out, though the Sena has been blowing hot and cold for quite some time. In fact, the Sena has never taken kindly to the BJP replacing it as the number one party in Maharashtra
legion of foul-mouthed supporters in the social media. All that satire and caricature are now very much in the past with the Congress’s own band of followers on the Internet effectively countering the Hindu cyber warriors and Rahul Gandhi himself giving back to his detractors in good measure. The part-time, reluctant politician has seemingly come of age. For the Sena, a BJP on the defen-

sive is a godsent, for it will enable the party to lord over Mumbai and urban Maharashtra as before and not play second fiddle as at present. The assembly elections in several states in the coming days will show whether the Sena has read the political tea leaves right about Modi’s waning influence.
But even if it has misread the scene, its praise for Rahul Gandhi is noteworthy because none of the Congress’s friends on the “secular” side of the political divide have expressed high hopes so far about the Congress vice-president’s chances as the Sena has done. A process of political churning is on.
Demonetization failed as banned notes returned Information on specified bank notes returned was important as any amount not returned to the banking system was supposed to be ‘black money’, that could be ‘extinguished’ by the RBI R. RAMAKUMAR, MUMBAI
T
he litmus test for the success of any demonetization is the amount of cash that does not return to the banking system. For long, economists and observers were intrigued by the refusal of the RBI to share data on SBNs (Specified Bank Notes) returned to banks after December 10, 2016. Information on SBNs returned was important because any amount not returned to the banking system was supposed to be ‘black money’, which could be ‘extinguished’ by the RBI... Consequently, the RBI could pass over an equivalent amount to the government, which in turn could spend it for welfare purposes. The government’s expectations were shared by the Attorney-General of India, Mukul Rohatgi, with the Supreme Court. According to Rohatgi, the government did not expect more than Rs 12 trillion to be returned to the banks, which implied that about Rs 3 trillion worth of ‘black money’ was to be

extinguished and passed over to the government.s As demonetization proceeded, these hopes stood belied. To begin with, (RBI Governor Urjit) Patel was forced to clarify on December 7, 2016, that “the withdrawal of legal tender characteristic status does not extinguish any of the RBI
balance sheets ... They are still the liability of the RBI”. On December 8, Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia told journalists that “the expectation is that the entire money which is in circulation has to come to the banking channel”. In other words, the pace at which SBNs were being returned to
ssthe banking system had convinced the government that there would be no currency left to extinguish. By December 10, Rs 12.44 trillion worth SBNs had already returned to the banking system. The government staunchly refused to share any figure on SBNs returned after December 10.
Instead, it attempted to obfuscate facts and confuse the public with convoluted stories of ‘double counting’. On December 15, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das told the media that data on SBNs returned were being withheld because the RBI suspected ‘double counting’ of currency notes. In its regular media briefings, the RBI was indeed providing SBN data from currency chests and not by adding the cash positions of individual banks. The RBI’s Deputy Governor R. Gandhi told the media on December 13, 2016, that “specified bank notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 returned to the RBI and currency chests amounted to Rs 12.44 lakh”. Yet, the RBI was to state on January 5, 2017, that “figures [on SBN] would need to be reconciled with the physical cash balances to eliminate accounting errors/possible double counts”. With such a scenario, as most critics predicted, demonetization had failed to extinguish any amount of money that could be alleged as ‘black’.

Bhalla elected NJ town Mayor ‘Targeted’ Ravi Bhalla elected as the first Sikh Mayor of the Hoboken town that is a suburb of New York City; Falguni Patel elected to the Edison Township School Board ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK
T
wo Indian American candidates have overcome bigoted propaganda to win local elections in New Jersey — one of them as the Mayor of Hoboken. Ravi Bhalla was elected in the elections as the first Sikh Mayor of the town that is a suburb of New York City. A lawyer, who was a member of the city council, Bhalla was the target of an anti-Sikh campaign pamphlet that said “Don’t let TERRORISM take over our town!” next to a picture of the turbaned candidate. Falguni Patel was elected to the Edison Township School Board. She and a Chinese American candidate, Jerry Shi, were targeted in mailings that said that they should both be deported and that “Chinese and Indians are taking over our town”.
“We won’t let hate win,” Ravi Bhalla (in the picture) has tweeted after the hate pamphlets were circulated.
Bhalla and Patel were born in the United States. The candidates received wide support and their election rivals condemned bigoted pamphlets. The pamphlets against Bhalla
were sent in the name of a rival candidate, who denied any involvement in it and called for a criminal investigation. The postcards targeting Patel and Shi were sent anonymously.

Patel resigned this week after being summoned back from a trip to Uganda and Ethiopia by Downing Street after it emerged that she failed to be candid with Prime
Minister Theresa May about 14 unofficial meetings with Israeli ministers, business people and a senior lobbyist, reports the Guardian. May and Patel met for just six minutes. “We won’t let hate win,” Bhalla tweeted after the pamphlets were circulated. Many New Jersey Indian Americans are active in politics and have emerged as an influential voting bloc sought after by candidates. The winner in the governor’s race, Democrat Phil Murphy, was a favorite of Indian Americans who held a rally for him on Monday in Edison. He will succeed Chris Christie, a Republican close to President Donald Trump who could not run for re-election as governors are limited to two terms in the state. Several Indian American candidates ran for local offices like school board, local council and borough councils, which are the springboard for higher positions, and many of them won. I offer a fulsome apology to you and to the government for what has happened and offer my resignation.” In response, May said Patel’s decision was the correct one. She argued in a letter to Patel that the UK and Israel were close allies and should work closely together. “But that must be done formally, and through official channels. That is why, when we met, I was glad to accept your apology and welcomed your clarification about your trip to Israel over the summer. Patel was a leading figure in the “Vote Leave” campaign during the European Union referendum.
BRIEFS Indian arrested for stealing cash BANGKOK: An Indian man has been arrested for stealing cash belonging to an Egyptian passenger at the Suvarnabhumi Airport here, the police said. Police and airport officials launched an investigation after the Egyptian filed a complaint, saying that cash in his luggage had been stolen while he was asleep in the departure lounge, the Bangkok Post reported. Information from the taxi driver led the police to arrest him. The police found $1,600, 1,560 dirhams and 12,500 baht in the Indian man’s possession. The Indian man Mahesh Vaijinath Mote first denied stealing the money but later confessed to the theft charge.

Deceased Bunty Shah was a Kenyan national of Indian origin.” “The Kenyan security forces were conducting anti-terror operations in a building across Shah’s residence. Bunty thought this was an intrusion by armed burglars and fired in the air,” she wrote on Twitter. “The security forces returned fire, resulting in Bunty’s death. Bhandari was elected to the Hague-based International Court of Justice in 2012 to complete the remainder of the term of a retiring judge. He was now running for a full nine-year term and is facing Nawaf Salam of Lebanon for the judgeship representing Asia. There were seven candidates for the five judgeships up for election this year. The five candidates who

The permanent members of the Council cannot veto a candidate. The governments of all the seven
candidates were campaigning for their candidates. The Indian Mission to the UN held a reception for him last month to meet the delegates who will be voting in the election. Besides Bhandari, President of the court Ronny Abraham of France, Vice President, Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of Somalia, and Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade of Brazil and Christopher Greenwood of Britain, whose terms end this year, are running for re-election. The court does not officially have regional quotas but its statutes also say that the judges should represent the “main forms of civilization” and the “principal legal systems of the world” and this
has in practice given rise to a regional distribution system. Bhandari is representing a swathe of Asia from the Middle East to the Far East along with judges from China and Japan. He was elected to succeed Awn Shawkat Al-Khasawneh of Jordan and he defeated a candidate from the Philippines. Therefore, he will essentially be facing Salam who is also from the region. While Bhandari also received nominations from Australia, Bangladesh, Colombia and Israel, Salam was nominated only by Lebanon and France. Bhandari, who is from Rajasthan, has been a Supreme Court judge and the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

tar Indian boxer M.C. Mary Kom defeated Hyang Mi Kim of North Korea in the women’s 48kg category to clinch gold at the Asian Boxing Championship this week. The Olympic bronze medallist got the better of her opponent in a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the final to win her fifth gold at the Asian Boxing Championship and first in the 48 kg category. “I am really happy the way this championship has panned out. I would like to dedicate this victory to all those who have supported me even though the world had written me off.” “I would like to thank my coaching staff who worked hard with me over the last few months,” Mary said after her victory. “A special word for the professional setup that BFI has put in place, ensuring that best facilities were given during the month-long

right from the word go. She landed most of her punches which put her ahead in the opening round itself. The Korean tried to stay in the fight, packing a few of her own. But Mary had clearly done better.
In the second round, Mary eased up a little, preferring to be a little cautious. She used her defensive abilities to the optimum and attacked only on the counter in this round. This strategy also worked, taking her just one step away from the gold. The Korean grew desperate in the final round and came out swinging, almost recklessly. But Mary was ready for that too. She used her reflexes well to slip in her jabs and hooks, while connecting her punches too. It was enough to put her on top of the podium. Another Indian finalist Sonia Lather suffered a heartbreak as she went down to China’s Yin Junhua in the final of the 57kg category to settle for the silver. It was overall a great campaign for the Indian contingent as seven of their boxers will return home with medals including one gold, one silver and five bronzes.

SC to hear plea against AIFF chief NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court will this week hear a plea by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) challenging a Delhi High Court order setting aside the election of NCP leader Praful Patel as its President. A bench headed by Justice J. Chelameswar directed the listing of the matter to November 10 after AIFF counsel Amit Anand Tiwari sought an early hearing. The Delhi High Court had on October 31 set aside the election of Patel and others, holding it arbitrary, and appointed former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi as the AIFF administrator. The High Court told Quraishi to hold fresh elections within five months. Petitioner AIFF has contended that the appointment of an administrator for running the affairs of the Federation may result in it being derecognised by FIFA — the international body for football. Kane Williamson and Glenn Phillips added 20 runs between them before both fell to consecutive balls. Williamson was run out thanks to an accurate throw by Hardik Pandya while Phillips was caught while attempting to hit Yadav against the turn. Henry Niholls fell while attempting a sweep of Bhuvneshwar only to pick out Shreyas Iyer at fine leg. Tom Bruce was run out later in that same over as the Kiwis tottered at 49/6 after seven overs.
Dhoni still performing at his age: Kohli IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
I
ndia captain Virat Kohli heaped praise on wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni saying he is fit at over 35 years and performing for the side. The former India skipper was criticized for failing to clear boundaries at regular intervals after the second Twenty20 International (T20I) against New Zealand. “First, I don’t understand why are people only pointing him out, I’m not able to understand this,”
the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by cricinfo. “If I fail three times, no one is going to point fingers at me because I’m not over 35. The guy is fit, he is passing all the fitness tests, he is contributing to the team in every way possible, tactically on the field, with the bat. If you look at the series against Sri Lanka and Australia, he did really well and in this series he hasn’t got much time to bat,” Kohli added. Kohli also said all-rounder Hardik Pandya failed to contribute runs batting at no.5 or 6
but his form has not been pointed out. “You have to understand, the position in which he comes out to bat, even Hardik could not score in that game,” said India skipper. “Then why are we only pointing out one man? Hardik also got out in the last T20 that we played in Rajkot. We are conveniently targeting only one man which is not fair. We also have to look at the fact that by the time he comes in, either the run rate is already eight-and-a-half or nine-and-a-half and the wicket is also not the same when the new ball is bowled,” Kohli added.

NORTH KOREA CRISIS
Trump wants China to do more China says it will do whatever possible to rein in North within the regulated framework of the UN but is not in favor of unilateral sanctions against the reclusive country GAURAV SHARMA, BEIJING
U
S President Donald Trump on Thursday urged all countries to stop arming, financing and trading with the “murderous” North Korean regime even as he claimed that China had a solution to the Korean nuclear crisis. Addressing a joint press conference with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall, Trump, on a threeday visit that began on Wednesday, said he and Xi had agreed not to replicate failed approaches to resolve the growing crisis. North Korea figured majorly on the agenda when Xi and Trump held talks at the Great Hall of the People. Trump indicated he wanted China to pressure North Korea to give up its nuclear designs. While Xi promised cooperation and coordination, Trump said China had the solution to the problem. “Our meeting ... was excellent, discussing North Korea and I do believe there is a solution to that, as you do,” Trump told Xi. “We have the capacity to solve world

hinese and US companies on Thursday signed deals worth more than $250 billion during President Donald Trump’s three-day state visit to China. Chinese President Xi Jinping revealed the figure after he and Trump witnessed the signing of the agreements at the Great Hall of the People, reports Xinhua news agency. China and the US have huge potential in reciprocal economic and trade cooperation, Xi said. The deals include purchases of Boeing aircraft, Ford automobiles, US soybeans and joint development of liquified natural gas in Alaska. Being the world’s biggest developing economy and developed economy, China and the US are highly complementary rather than competitive, Xi said when meeting business delegates from both countries. “We are willing to expand

We will continue to encourage Chinese companies to invest in the US. “We also welcome US companies and financial institutions to participate in the ‘Belt and Road Initia-

China on Wednesday published data related to foreign trade during the first ten months of 2017 that showed that the country’s trade surplus with the US stood at $223 billion, meaning a year-on-year increase of eight percent.
North Korea abandons its reckless and dangerous path.” China is the North’s ally and its biggest trading partner. Washington believes that Beijing has influence over Pyongyang because of the close ties. Mao Zedong’s son died fighting in Korea against the US in the 1950s. China says it will do whatever possible to rein in North within the regulated framework of the UN but is not in favor of unilateral sanctions against the reclusive country. Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have escalated after North Korea’s test firing of missiles and conducting its most powerful hydrogen test in September. North Korea fears the US wants it to be merged with South Korea. Trump also talked about the yawning trade deficit between two countries. He blamed his predecessors, not China, for the problem. Trump is in China on the third leg of his five-nation Asia tour after stops in Japan and South Korea. He will later go to Vietnam and the Philippines. This is Trump’s first visit to China as US President.
‘Arrangement’ to contain China? BEIJING: China on Tuesday denounced as “gas and speculation” the reports about the US and Japan teaming up to ensure “free and open” Indo-Pacific region. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said media reports, especially “Japanese, about such partnership between Japan and the US to contain China are gas and speculation”. US President Donald Trump, who is visiting Asia, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed IndoPacific region as Washington wants Tokyo, New Delhi, and Canberra to join a dialogue in the region. Last Sunday, a US official said that instead of the term Asia-Pacific, Washington would like to use the phrase Indo-Pacific because it “captures the importance of India’s rise”. “We have indeed noted that recently this concept has been mentioned many times,” Hua said when asked about such arrangements was to counter China in Indo-Pacific region and its Belt and Road Initiative. —IANS

Trump warns North Korea Denouncing Pyongyang’s ‘cruel dictatorship’ and nuclear adventurism, the US President warned it not to ‘underestimate’ Washington's strength IANS, SEOUL
Trump cancels surprise visit to North Korea border
U
S President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a blunt warning to North Korean Korean leader Kim Jong, declaring during his first major speech in Asia that continued nuclear provocation could result in the communist nation’s obliteration. “The weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer, they are putting your regime in grave danger,” Trump said during an address at South Korea’s National Assembly here. “Every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face.” In a bruising insult of the repressive regime founded by Kim Ilsung in the middle of last century and governed in his image ever since, Trump diminished the kingdom now ruled by his grandson, CNN reported. “North Korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned,” Trump said. “It is a hell that no person deserves.” Denouncing Pyongyang’s “cruel dictatorship” and nuclear adventurism, Trump warned it not to

Today I hope I speak not only for our countries, but for all civilized nations when I say to the North: Do not underestimate us. And do not try us.” Trump also reiterated his mantra of “peace through strength” and called on China, Russia and the world to join efforts to isolate the
“brutal regime”, Yonhap news agency reported. “The regime has interpreted America’s past restraint as weakness. This would be a fatal miscalculation,” he said, speaking to 550 people, including South Korean lawmakers and foreign diplomats. “The world cannot tolerate the menace of a rogue regime that threatens with nuclear devastation. All responsible nations must join forces to isolate the brutal regime
SEOUL: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday cancelled a visit to the tense Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas because bad weather ostensibly made it impossible for him to travel by helicopter to the border from Seoul. The president’s helicopter convoy took off from the central Yongsan military base in Seoul, near the hotel where he is staying, but it had to return to the base a few minutes later due to poor weather conditions, the White House said, Efe reported. Washington had said publicly that it was ruling out a trip to the DMZ during Trump’s two-day visit to South Korea, an Asia tour on which the president is addressing the military threat posed by North Korea.

However, amid ironclad security, Trump decided to make a surprise visit to the border along with South Korean President Moon Jae-in as a symbol of the strong alliance between Washington and Seoul, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. “I think he’s pretty frustrated,” said Sanders, referring to Trump, who will travel to Beijing later on Wednesday. “The fact they were planning to go still shows the strength of the alliance,” she said. Trump arrived here on a two-day visit on Sunday, the first stop in his five-nation tour through Asia, reports CNN. Earlier on Monday, the President and First Lady Melania Trump met Emperor Akihito and his wife, Empress Michiko, at the Imperial Palace, following which Abe and Trump held talks with the families of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea. as his first stop on his Asia tour demonstrated to the rest of the world the “unshakeable US-Japan alliance”. “Thank you, Donald,” he added. The Prime Minister said Japan supports the US President’s position on North Korea “when he says
all options are on the table. “For more than 20 some years the international community attempted dialogue with North Korea... Now is not the time for dialogue but for applying the maximum amount of pressure on North Korea.” In response, Trump vowed to stand with Japan, as both countries face threats from North Korea. “The United States of America stands in solidarity with the people of Japan against the North Korean menace. History has proven over and over that strong and free nations will always prevail over tie rants who oppress their people.” Trump also declared that the “era of strategic patience is over” when it comes to the US stance toward North Korea. Trump also met Japanese and American business leaders where he said: “We want fair and open trade. But right now our trade with Japan is not fair and it’s not open. But I know it will be soon.”

Ten groups of IT officials were involved in the “search exercise taking place across Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and other places,” the IT official, who did not want to be identified, told IANS. Among the places raided were the residence of M. Natarajan, Sasikala’s husband, in Thanjavur, Kodanad Tea Estate belonging to late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.

CHENNAI: On a half-a-day’s trip to Chennai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week called on DMK President M. Karunanidhi and enquired about his health. “Vanakkam, Sir”, Modi greeted Karunanidhi as he sat near the 93year-old veteran and held his hand. Accompanied by Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Pon Radhakrishnan, Modi was with the DMK leader for about 10 minutes before winding up his visit to the city during which he took part in the 75th anniversary celebrations of Tamil newspaper Dina Thanthi. Karunanidhi’s son M.K. Stalin, who was on a visit to Sharjah, cut short the trip and returned to receive Modi at Karunanidhi’s residence. Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi’s daughter, and Rajathi, Karunanidhi’s second wife, and DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan were also present. The Prime Minister was briefed
about Karunanidhi’s health by his doctor. This is the first time Modi has met Karunanidhi at his residence. Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundarajan told reporters that Modi invited Karunanidhi to his home in Delhi for taking rest. Karunanidhi reciprocated with a smile, she said. DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan said it was a courtesy call, coming at a time when Karunanidhi was making considerable improvement in his health. Karunanidhi has been off active politics for about a year now since age-related ailments have kept him home-bound. Modi’s visit comes at a time when Stalin has been attacking the central government. Stalin has been charging the Centre with running a proxy government in Tamil Nadu. He said that the BJP government had not fulfilled the promises made during the 2014 Lok Sabha election.

through shell companies connected to Sasikala and Dinakaran, adding that the IT department will look at routing of funds within India and there are other agencies looking at routing of funds outside India. Jaya TV, a satellite channel, and Namadhu MGR, a Tamil daily, which is the mouthpiece of the AIADMK, are now under the management control of the Sasikala faction. Prior to the death of J Jayalalithaa, both showcased the achievements of the AIADMK and its state. However, after the party broke into three factions — that of Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, of former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam (who later became Deputy Chief Minister after merging his faction with Palaniswami’s), and of Sasikala and
Dinakaran, they highlighted only the Sasikala-Dinakaran faction. Panneerselvam, after becoming Deputy Chief Minister, demanded takeover of the two media by the ruling faction. In his response, Dinakaran dubbed the IT raids politically motivated and said he will not be frightened by such actions of the Central government. He asserted that even if “he is arrested and jailed for 20 years, he will come out and serve the state at 74 years of age”. When asked about the IT raids, DMK Working President M K Stalin said that there are no answers to the questions raised on the action taken on the raids conducted by the IT department at AIADMK leaders and other organizations earlier.

cotching speculation that DMK was getting close to BJP, M.K. Stalin this week said the “dream” of some people of such a possibility cannot be realized and warned the Modi government that DMK will not be cowed down by any threats in its opposition to the Centre on demonetization and other issues. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on his ailing father and DMK chief M. Karunanidhi in Chennai was a “humanitarian” gesture and nothing more than that. Wearing a black shirt along with cadre of DMK and allies, Stalin broke his silence on the issue while speaking at the Opposition-spon-
sored “Black Day” protests here. The DMK had called off the protests in Chennai and coastal districts because of heavy rains. “The PM called on Karunanidhi. It was a humanitarian gesture. Immediately media speculated as if some compromise has been reached. People even went to the extent of saying a political alliance has been struck (between DMK and BJP). A humanitarian gesture has been twisted by some whose dream will not be allowed to be realized,” he said. The ModiKarunanidhi meet triggered media and political
speculation that DMK could join hands with Modi amidst a political churning in Tamil Nadu after J. Jayalalithaa’s death and serious conflicts in the AIADMK.

Addressing a press conference on his 63rd birthday, he announced the launch of an app #KH with several links like “maiamwhistle” (centre whistle) and “theditheerpomvaa” (let us search and resolve). It will act as a digital platform for people to complain and interact with him. “I plan to undertake a tour of Tamil Nadu to reach out to people.

The dates will be announced later,” Haasan said at an hour-long media interaction, which was marked by his trademark replies in riddles. In his opening statement, Haasan said people would be asking him questions as to when he would launch the party about which he has
been speaking, and answered saying: “A lot of prepatory work is being done. I am consulting experts and friends and will make the announcement at the appropriate time. “Why should I announce a party separately as I am already there.” Answering one of the questions, he said like one of the links to his digital platform, he would be neither be going “left nor right”. Asked about the perception that he was anti-Hindu after his recent statements, Haasan clarified he was only talking about Hindu extremism and not Hindu terrorism. “I am not starting a party to hurt Hindus. I come from a Hindu family and I don’t want to lose the affection of my family,” he said.

A post on the official Twitter handle of Padmavati, read: “Padmavati my tribute to the sacrifice, valour and honor of Rani Padmavati: Sanjay Leela Bhansali.” The movie, which is being called an epic historical drama, features Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh. —IANS
Trivikrama questions: “It depends who the historians are because history is also colored. It has to be a wellrepresented congress of historians. He (Bhansali) should approach the most authentic voice, which is the family itself. That he hasn’t done.” Her mother, Maharani Nirupama Kumari said: “He has already made the film. What’s the point of showing it to historians now?”

rotic thriller Julie 2, which was caught in a legal battle, will now release on November 24, says producer Pahlaj Nihalani, who is livid over the financial losses he and his director Deepak Shivdasani had to suffer due to the copyright case lodged against their film by producer N.R. Pachisia. Nihalani and his director had to cough up a compensatory amount to be able to release the film. “What we gave him was even less than the lawyer’s fees. But what Pachisia has taken away is our faith in people from our own fraternity. Pachisia knows what producers have to go through when their films are stalled legally or otherwise at the last moment,” said Nihalani. “He still went ahead and filed a bogus case against our film claiming Julie 2 infringed on the copyrights of the film Julie which

Pachisia had produced in 2004. We kept shouting and vowing that Julie 2 had nothing to do with the film that he had produced,” added the former CBFC chief. Now, Julie 2 is finally freed of legal obstacles and ready for release. “We had to postpone the release thrice. We are now releasing on November 24,” he said.
scar-winning actress Halle Berry is in India and enjoying getting “lost” in the streets of the country’s financial and film capital here. Berry, known for films like Monster’s Ball, Die Another Day and XMen, revealed through her Instagram account that she is in India. “Caught a sunrise in Mumbai today,” the actress posted this week, along with a photograph capturing a skyline full of high-rises as the sun rays add an orange tinge to the sky. In another image posted a few hours later, Berry is seen wearing a tie-and-dye knee-length casual
dress, with her hair tied in a ponytail. It’s a wide angle back shot, and encapsulates a street lined by cars and two-wheelers and flanked by restaurants. “Take time to get lost today,” Berry wrote with the photograph, which includes a banner of popular restaurant Bade Miya, known best for its delectable kebabs. Her visit comes amidst no pre-publicity, and the purpose of her visit in not known. Last year, actors Will Smith and Brad Pitt had come to India and surprised the paparazzi. Later in the day, Dia Mirza shared a photo of herself, Halle Berry and musician and entrepreneur Ananya Birla.

Priyanka feels ‘honored’

Priyanka is at number 97 in the list, which also features personalities like Ivanka Trump, Indra Nooyi, Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II, Beyonce Knowles, J.K. Rowling and Taylor Swift. The Mary Kom actress on November 8
shared a clipping of the list on her Instagram profile. “Honored to stand alongside these amazing trailblazers, who show us everyday that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to and that it’s ok to stay true to who you are. Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them. Power women, Worlds 100 most powerful women. Forbes,” Priyanka captioned the image.
K
angana Ranaut, known to speak her mind despite the reactions her words elicit, says it is difficult to remain “headstrong” in Bollywood as there are always people who try to make one “feel insignificant”. But she continues to fight it. “Being an outsider in the business, I have fought to carve a niche for myself. I have also been opinionated and I choose to express my views openly,” Kangana told IANS. “In our industry, it becomes difficult to remain headstrong as you are often judged for not following the status quo. There will always be a segment that will try to make you feel insignificant, but it is important to channel your strength and confidence and work hard to triumph,”Kangana added.

An actor needs to be shameless: Vidya
A
ctress Vidya Balan says it is very important for an actor to be shameless and fearless. “It is very important for an actor to be shameless, should have no apprehensions, fearless and be ‘bindass’,” said Vidya Balan. On the film front, Vidya is looking forward to her film Tumhari Sulu. The story of the film — releasing on November 17 — revolves around a middle-aged ordinary housewife Sulochona aka Sulu who is a happy-go-lucky person with an extraordinary calibre. Directed by Suresh Triveni, the film tells the story of how the housewife, who lives with her husband and son, tries hard to add spice to their lives.
A
ctress Deepika Padukone says shooting the song ‘Ghoomar’ for the film Padmavati was challenging for her as it needed delicate moves with the right emotions. Deepika was present for the promotion of the song at a leading radio station. She said: “I think the toughest part of this song is the fact... As you all have seen the song, we did the steps keeping in mind the minute details — the hip movement and the hand movement. They are not traditionally seen. They are not big, loud steps... It is very fragile and delicate, but at the same time emoting or connecting with the audience... That was really difficult experience for me.” ‘Ghoomar’ is the first song to come out from the forthcoming movie Padmavati.

Diwali festival at Field Museum BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- From the moment visitors walked through the Field Museum’s east entrance doors on October 28, Beyond Bollywood Family Fun Day promised delight. Pre-schoolers and their parents joined Bollywood Groove story teller Ajanta Chakraborty in vigorous movement to enliven the story of “Five Days of Diwali.” In the Crown Family PlayLab, children created sparkly diyas, clay lamps which brighten the darkest night of the year when millions of people world-wide celebrate Diwali, the festival of light. The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals “who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of

Scientist Arun Bhatnagar BY A STAFF WRITER OUISVILLE, KY -- Arun Bhatnagar, an Indian American scientist with the Institute of Molecular Cardiology at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, will install a $14.50-million ‘unique urban laboratory’ to study the effect of green plantations on combating cardiovascular diseases. His research interests include cardiovascular effects of environmental pollutants, atherosclerosis, injury from loss of blood to the heart muscle, cardiovascular complications of diabetes and sepsis. The Green Heart project involves the University of Louisville, the Nature Conservancy, the Institute for Healthy Air, Land and Soil and other partners that will transform four South Louisville neighborhoods, home to about 22,000 residents, with 8,000 trees and other plantings. Researchers will track the health of about 700 residents to ascertain cardiovascular response to the plantation. Bhatnagar said green spaces breathe in their own way, taking up the heat-trapping gas carbon dioxide while creating life-sustaining oxygen. While trees produce volatile organic compounds--a source of ozone pollution--they also absorb ozone and other pollutants and trap especially dangerous tiny particles. But “nobody has evaluated the specific health effects of planting green spaces,” he said, adding that the effect of plantation on human health where people’s health is monitored before, during and after a major tree plantation drive has not been studied so far. Research has hitherto identified only poor diet and lack of exercise with heart risk.

App on renting space to store excess stuff BY A STAFF WRITER ANCASTER, PA -- Two students at Lancaster, Pa.-based Franklin & Marshall College, including Indian American Paraj Mathur, have created an app that promises to provide people space to store excess stuff. The 21-year-old senior majoring in business and computer science discovered the idea when last spring, at the conclusion of his junior year, he was lugging his stuff to his friend and classmate Ionela Turcin in Reading, according to a LancasterOnline.com report. Mathur and Turcin co-created the SimplyStow app, which Mathur has begun programming, and should be live by midNovember. He has also begun working with professors and mentors at the college to create a business plan.
L
Paraj Mathur “Our goal is that no college student or anyone ... (who has more stuff than space) will need to suffer through self-storage again,” Mathur said. SimplyStow has two essential functions for
users: to list a space and store your stuff. The former is a listing which provides a description and photo, with all accounts verified using a social profile. Similar to Airbnb, an app that allows people to rent their living space to users, SimplyStow allows people to list their space at their own price. Spaces could be as small as a corner of a room or as big as a garage. The latter allows users to sift through the app to find a nearby location that fits their needs. As the app grows, users can view listings with ratings and reviews from other users. When they find a space, they can choose the time and date for pickup. SimplyStow will pick up, pack and deliver the belongings and keep a digital inventory. Mathur, 21, said the company will insure the stored items for loss or damage. About 250 people have signed up for the app, which is in its beta phase.
Yahya Farooq Mohammad (Lucas County Sheriff Department photo)
BY A STAFF WRITER OLEDO, OH -- A defense attorney says an Indian citizen jailed on terrorism charges was drawn into a plot to kill a federal judge in Ohio by another inmate attempting to reduce his own sentence. Pre-sentencing court documents filed this week by the defense say the other inmate pretended to show an interest in Islam and then concocted the scheme against the judge. Defendant Yahya Farooq Mohammad, 37, pleaded guilty this summer to supporting terrorism and trying to arrange the killing of a federal judge in Toledo overseeing his case.

Sikh teen beaten up in Kent ‘hate crime’ BY A STAFF WRITER ENT, WA -- A 14-year-old Sikh boy was on October 26 beaten up by a classmate in Washington state, and his father later claimed that his son was targeted as he is an Indian American. The incident occurred less than a block from Kentridge High School in Kent, Wash., where both the boys are studying. Media reports said the teen-aged boy followed the victim and punched him,
K
knocking him to the ground. The Indian was punched several more times as he tried to protect his head and crawl away. The family said the incident exposed racial divisions in the city. However, school officials said the attack was not religiously or racially motivated, but was instead a continuation of an earlier classroom dispute. The victim’s parents, however, said their son didn’t even know his attacker’s name. Calls and messages from people in the region poured in expressing outrage about
the incident. The Kent area is home to many Sikhs. The family said it wants peace for them and everyone. A Facebook thread about the incident generated more than 40 comments from parents and community members who said the teen who beat up the boy needs to be held accountable and people everywhere need to stand up against injustice. School officials met the police on October 31 and the matter is under investigation.

Manisha Singh
BY A STAFF WRITER ASHINGTON, DC -- The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Manisha Singh, a prominent Indian American lawyer, to a key administration position in the State Department that would make her in charge of the country’s economic diplomacy. Singh was chief counsel and senior policy adviser to Sen. Dan Sullivan prior to the confirmation. Her nomination was confirmed by a voice vote in block along with several other diplomatic nominations. Singh replaces Charles Rivkin as the assistant secretary of state for economic affairs. The position has been vacant since January after Rivkin resigned following President Donald Trump’s swearing-in as the 45th President of the United States. Trump nominated Singh for the post on September 11. A resident of Florida, Singh, 45, has served as the deputy assistant secretary of state in the Bureau of Economic, Energy and Business Affairs, and as an aide to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Singh is licensed to practice law in Florida, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. A native of Uttar Pradesh, she moved to Florida along with her parents as a child.

Opioids, anti-depressants ups risk of bone diseases NEW YORK: Consuming opioids and anti-depressants may increase the risk of developing bone fractures among people who are already suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, said a study presented at the ACR/ARHP annual meeting 2017 in San Diego. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease causing pain, stiffness, swelling, and limitation in the motion and func-

tion of multiple joints and organs of the body. Chronic inflammation and pain in arthritis patients leads to diseases like cardiovascular, mental and gastrointestinal disorders. People take multiple medications in such cases that sometimes influences the risk of osteoporotic fractures or a disease caused due to reduced bone density, the study noted. “Even at younger ages, rheumatoid
arthritis is associated with a two-fold increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures due to chronic inflammation and glucocorticoid use. Moreover, osteoporotic fractures significantly contribute to disability, health-related costs and mortality with substantially higher complication in rheumatoid arthritis patients,” said Gulsen Ozen from University of Nebraska Medical Centre.
India tops GBS infant deaths Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a major bacterial infection that can occur in pregnant women’s vagina or rectum, and is responsible for maternal and infant ill-health IANS, LONDON
NEW YORK: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) — considered as a safe and highly effective contraception method — may also offer protection against cervical cancer, says a recent study. According to the World Health Organizsation (WHO), approximately 528,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer globally in 2012, and 266,000 women died from the disease making it the third-mostcommon cancer in women. The WHO projects that by 2035 these numbers will climb to more than 756,000 and 416,000, respectively. The findings showed using IUD can dramatically decrease the incidence of cervical cancer by a third.

The study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases urged for the development of an effective GBS vaccine, saying that immunizing expectant mothers is a potentially ground-breaking approach that could dramatically reduce the number of maternal and child deaths. As per the researchers, a maternal GBS vaccine, which is just 80 percent effective and is able to reach at least 90 percent of women, could potentially prevent 231,000 infant and maternal GBS cases globally.
Air pollution causing kidney Vaccination can save 90,000 Indian kids disease in millions: Study IANS, NEW DELHI
NEW YORK: The increasing toll of chronic kidney disease (CKD) globally can significantly be attributed to the rise in air pollution, researchers say. Presenting their study at ASN Kidney Week 2017 recently in New Orleans, Louisiana, the researchers used the Global Burden of Disease study methodologies to estimate the burden of CKD attributable to air pollution. “Air pollution might at least partially explain the rise in incidence of CKD of unknown origin in many geographies around the world, and the rise in Mesoamerican nephropathy in Mexico and Central America,” said Benjamin Bowe, MPH, in a statement. Epidemiologic measures of the burden of CKD attributable to air pollution, including years living with disability, years of life lost, and disability-

adjusted life years — a measure that combines the burden of living with the disease and the early death caused by the disease — suggest that the burden varies greatly by geography, with higher values seen in Central America and South Asia. Earlier, Bowe and his colleagues described an association between rising levels of fine particulate matter and risk of developing CKD. — IANS

Released ahead of the World Pneumonia Day on November 12, the report published by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health however noted that India has made a considerable improvement since last year. “India could save over $1 billion each year in economic benefits and avert more than 90,000 needless child deaths per year by introducing and scaling up coverage of vaccination programs targeting pneumonia and diarrhea,” observed the yearly study conducted by the International Vaccine Access Centre (IVAC) of the Hopkins Bloomberg School. The report also said that since last year, India has increased its performance by seven points, mainly owing to its vaccination coverage of “measles vaccine, Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine, three doses of diphtheria tetanus and pertussis vaccine, and rotavirus vaccine” during the period.
