A
n Indian-origin hotel tycoon in Britain is locked in a legal battle with Heathrow Airport over his plans to build a multistorey car park on land he owns at the facility. In a row that could have implications for expansion of the hub, Surinder Arora issued a UK
High Court claim against the west London airport over his plans to build a 2,077-space, nine-storey car park on land he owns at Heathrow, the Sunday Times reported. However, Heathrow Airport Ltd claims it alone is entitled to build these spaces. Under local planning rules, a maximum of 42,000 car parking spaces are allowed at the air-
Volunteers from Archangels of Justice, a retired law enforcement officials’ organization, researched the case and wrote a report that pointed to Bethune. The family’s campaign rallied the support of community, with over 500 people attending his death anniversary observance. Congressman Danny K. Davis took up the issue with the Justice Department and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, then-Congressman Bob Dold and former Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon joined the demand for a proper investigation. Lovely Varughese also filed a case against Carbondale, its police department and O’Guin alleging negligence and seeking $5 million in damages. The local prosecutor, Michael Carr, who initially took up the case removed himself from it after failing to get a grand jury to charge Bethune.

TRUMP BOWS TO PUBLIC PRESSURE US President Donald Trump — swayed by images of children — signed an executive order promising to ‘keep families together’ in migrant detentions

Reunite Down’s syndrome girl with family: Mexico
U
S President Donald Trump has bowed to public pressure and signed an executive order promising to “keep families together” in migrant detentions. Trump reversed his own policy amid international fury over the separation of undocumented parents and children. He said he had been swayed by images of children who have been taken from parents while they are jailed and prosecuted for illegal border-crossing. It was not immediately clear when Trump’s order would be implemented. “It’s about keeping families together,” Trump said at the signing ceremony on June 20, reports BBC. “I did not like the sight of families being separated,” he said, but added the administration would

continue its “zero tolerance policy” of criminally prosecuting anyone who crosses the border illegally. The executive order states that immigrant families will be detained together, except in cases where there are concerns about the child’s welfare, but it is unclear for how long.
‘Tariffs on metals must to pre-empt China move’
5 undocumented immigrants killed WASHINGTON: Five undocumented immigrants in a speeding sport utility vehicle (SUV) were killed when it crashed while being chased by border patrol agents in Texas town near the Mexico border, officials said. The fatal crash occurred on Sunday near Big Wells, which is about 100 miles southwest of San Antonio, ABC News quoted Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd as saying. Boyd said a total of 14 people were inside the SUV and several were ejected out of the vehicle when it rolled onto Highway 85. “Border patrol was pursuing a vehicle, a Chevrolet Suburban, and one of my deputies assisted and took over the pursuit just west of Big Wells,” Boyd said. “The vehicle was travelling at around 100 miles per hour and from what we could tell the vehicle ran off the road, caught gravel, then tried to recorrect and that caused the vehicle to turn over several times.” He said four people died at the scene, and several were flown by emergency helicopter to a hospital in San Antonio. One person died upon arriving at the hospital, reports ABC News. The driver of the SUV was taken into custody. The sheriff said it was just the latest in a series of police chases involving human and drug smugglers in the Big Wells area. —IANS
Trump’s order also calls for prioritizing immigration cases involving detained families. The President said his wife, Melania, and daughter, Ivanka, who reportedly have been applying pressure on him to drop the policy in recent days, “feel strongly” about ending the practice of sepa-
MEXICO CITY: Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray has requested the US to immediately reunite a girl with Down’s syndrome and her brother with their family. Mexico on June 20 demanded that the Donald Trump administration take all necessary action to ensure an immediate reunion of the child and her brother with their mother and the family, Xinhua news agency reported. The 10-year old girl and her brother were sent to a detention centre in McAllen in Texas, while their mother was sent to another facility in the Brownsville in the same state. —IANS

U US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross
S Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross this week said global tariffs on steel and aluminium were necessary to prevent China from routing those metals to the United States via other regions. Ross made his remarks during an appearance before the Senate’s
Finance Committee. He said that since the tariffs were imposed Europe, Canada and Japan had begun to take forceful action against a global steel glut driven by Chinese production, reported Efe. President Donald Trump’s administration decided in May to end a two-month exemption for the European Union, Canada and
rating migrant families. “I think anybody with a heart would feel very strongly about it,” he said. “We don’t like to see families separated.” Vice-President Mike Pence and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who has emerged as the face of the White House policy, were both present for this week’s order signing. Republican congressional leader Paul Ryan said the House of Representatives will vote on June 21 “on legislation to keep families together”. He did not immediately provide details of the bill, but said it resolves the issue of so-called Dreamers, undocumented adult migrants who entered the US as children, “in a very elegant way”. This week, American Airlines, United Airlines and Frontier Airlines said they did not want their planes used by the US government to transport the migrant children. Mexico — the US’s largest trading partners — from a 25 per cent tariff on steel and a 10 per cent tariff on aluminium. Japan was hit with the tariffs in March, when Trump announced the measures, although since then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has tried to negotiate an exemption agreement. “Suddenly Europe is enacting safeguards against steel dumping into Europe.” Ross said. “They didn’t do much before,” Ross mentioned. “Canada is taking action. Japan for the first time has created an enforcement body ... to deal with the problem.”
US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
S
triking a blow against the UN Human Rights Council’s credibility, the US is withdrawing from the “hypocritical” organization, US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley has announced. “For too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers and a cesspool of political bias,” Haley said this week. UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein last week asked the Council, whose credibility has been questioned in stark terms by India and now the US, to set up a commission of inquiry into alleged abuses in Kashmir.
US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Washington on June 19. (Photo: IANS)
“The world’s most inhumane regimes continue to escape scrutiny, and the council continues politicizing and scapegoating of countries with positive human
rights records in an attempt to distract from the abusers in their ranks,” Haley said. The US is an elected member of the Council with its term running
till the end of next year. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also denounced it saying: “The Human Rights Council enables abuses by absolving wrongdoers through silence and falsely condemning those who have committed no offense. A mere look around the world today demonstrates that the council has failed in its stated objectives. “When they seek to infringe on our national sovereignty, we will not be silent,” he added. India’s criticism of Zeid’s report recommending the Council probe also made the same point. “The report violates India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said last week.

Kashmir: BJP-PDP government falls Mehbooba Mufti stepped down as the Chief Minister immediately after BJP pulled out of govt SARWAR KASHANI, SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI
J
ammu and Kashmir was pushed into a major political crisis on Tuesday after the BJP suddenly pulled out of the ruling combine with the PDP, bringing down Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s 27-monthold government amid surging violence in the state. The decision, which surprised the Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and came days after the central government decided not to extend the Ramadan ceasefire, made another round of Governor’s Rule imminent in the state where no political group or alliance won enough seats in the December 2014 elections to form a government on its own. Mehbooba Mufti stepped down as the Chief Minister immediately after BJP announced its decision in a televised news conference. She made it clear that the PDP wasn’t interested in forming an alliance with the National Conference or the Congress for a new government. BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav, announcing his party’s decision in Delhi, said the state government had failed to curb growing terror and radicalization in the Kashmir Valley, making the continuance of its alliance with the PDP “untenable”. Madhav said the murder of senior Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari in Srinagar implied how the situation was in Jammu and Kashmir.
Bank Of Maharashtra CMD arrested PUNE: In a major swoop, the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) here arrested Ravindra P. Marathe, the Chairman and Managing Director of Bank of Maharashtra, and six others in a case of around Rs 2,043 crore fraudulent loans extended to Pune’s DSK Group, an official said here on Wednesday. The EOW has also arrested the public sector bank’s Executive Director Rajendra K. Gupta, Zonal Manager Nityanand Deshpande from Ahmedabad and former CMD Sushil Muhnot from Jaipur. The 83-year-old Pune-headquartered Bank of Maharashtra is ranked among the leading PSBs in India. —IANS
Governor’s rule not to affect anti-terror operations: Army chief NEW DELHI: The political change in Jammu and Kashmir will not affect anti-terror operations which will continue as before the Ramadan ceasefire, Army chief General Bipin Rawat said here on Wednesday. “We do not think there will be any change. We don’t have any political interference. There has never been a stop on how Army has to carry out its operations. We have very strict rules of engagement and we have been taking actions in accordance with those and will continue to so in the future,” Gen Rawat said on the sidelines of an event. He was asked if the change in the political situation in the state following imposition of Governor’s rule will impact Army’s operations. Gen Rawat said operations were being carried out in the past and
“Three years ago, the BJP formed a government in Jammu and Kashmir with the PDP with some goals. But it has become untenable for the BJP to continue the alliance in the situation that has developed today. “Terrorism and violence have increased in the valley and radicalization is fast spreading. Fundamental rights of citizens and right to free speech of people have come under threat in the valley as sym-
there was cessation during Ramadan. “We wanted that during Ramzan, the local residents get a chance to offer their prayers in a proper way (so that) they do not face any difficulty. But the terrorists continued their actions and this led to withdrawal of the move of suspension of operations. “We will again start the operations. The actions will be carried out as were being done in the past,” he said. Governor’s rule has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir following recommendation of Governor N.N. Vohra. The Centre had earlier this month decided not to extend its unilateral initiative, declared on May 16, to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan as terrorist activities continued in the Kashmir Valley.
bolized by the murder of ... Bukhari in broad daylight,” Madhav said in a hurriedly called press conference. Immediately after learning about the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision, Mehbooba Mufti rushed to the Raj Bhavan and submitted her resignation to Governor N.N. Vohra — who has already had three stints of enjoying Chief Minister’s executive powers in 2008, 2015 and 2016. The political crisis set the stage

Separatist shutdown hits life in Kashmir SRINAGAR: A shutdown called by separatists affected life across the Kashmir Valley on Thursday. The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a grouping of separatists headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, called for the shutdown against the killing of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari and continuing killings of civilians in Kashmir.
of another round of Governor’s Rule in the state which has seen three such administrations since 2008 and seven since 1977. No regional or national party has 45 seats in the 89-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. The PDP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats, followed by the BJP with 25 in the last elections. The National Conference won 15 and the Congress managed 12.
Shujaat was killed along with two of his security guards in Press Enclave in Srinagar on June 14. Shops, public transport, other businesses and educational institutions remained shut at most places while attendance in banks, post offices and government offices was thin due to non-availability of public transport. Rail services have been suspended as a precaution.
The BJP and the PDP came together after weeks of negotiations and formed the government on March 1, 2015. The alliance, which brought the ideologically different parties together, was always rocky. After her father’s death on January 1, 2016, Mehbooba Mufti reluctantly continued the PDP’s alliance with the BJP and formed a new government only on April 4, 2016.
Chief Economic Advisor Subramanian quits IANS, NEW DELHI
C
hief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian, who succeeded the high-profile Raghuram Rajan in the Finance Ministry in 2014, has quit the government with plans to go back to the US for research and writing. The news about Subramanian leaving the Finance Ministry was broken by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who wrote a Facebook post saying that he (Subramanian) had told him a few days ago that he wanted to go back to the US due to family commitments and he agreed with him. “Few days ago Arvind Subramanian met me over video conferencing. He informed me that he

would like to go back to the US on account of pressing family commitments,” Jaitley said, adding that his reasons were “personal but
extremely important” to him. Subramanian had joined as the CEA on October 16, 2014 for a period of three years after which
Jaitley had requested him to continue for some more time. “Even at that stage he told me that he was torn between family commitments and his current job which he considered as the best and most fulfilling he has ever done.” This is the third high-level exit from the government after the departure of Raghuram Rajan as RBI Governor and the sudden resignation by NITI Aayog Deputy Chairman Arvind Panagriya. Jaitley said Subramanian’s interactions with the government in the Finance Ministry, PMO and with other department were both formal and informal. His instantaneous communications with his interlocutors had increased his effectiveness.

These musicians from Rajasthan are a struggling lot

Popular worldwide, Manganiyaars' secular music loses charm in India ARCHANA SHARMA, JAIPUR

Mid-term election will call Kejriwal’s bluff Many politicians support Arvind Kejriwal's sit-in protest at Lt. Governor's office, but the public favor is still unknown AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
T
he biggest argument against granting full statehood to Delhi is Arvind Kejriwal himself. If an election leads to the elevation of what a former Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, called a “yeda” Chief Minister — yeda is a Marathi word for unhinged — when referring to Kejriwal, then the risk of elevating the status of the national capital cannot be taken. Shinde’s ire related to Kejriwal’s dharna in a high-security zone on the eve of the Republic Day in 2014 during his first term in office when he was the Chief Minister for 49 days. He had also threatened to disrupt the Republic Day parade on that occasion and proclaimed himself an “anarchist”. Although he appeared to have calmed down a little after winning a second term in 2015, his anarchism has again surfaced on two occasions. One was the reported assault on Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by legislators of the Aam Admi Party (AAP) after Prakash was summoned to the Chief Minister’s residence late on the night of February 19, 2018, for a “discussion” on various issues, including an advertisement on the completion of the AAP government’s third year in office.
And the other is the sit-in by Kejriwal and other AAP leaders in the Lieutenant Governor, Anil Baijal’s office to urge him to intervene in the “strike” being observed by the IAS bureaucrats over the assault on the Chief Secretary. Even though Kejriwal’s unique form of protest has received support from several politicians, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and a former member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Yashwant Sinha, the extent of public support — fed up with mount-
Kejriwal’s support base comprises the slum-dwellers and the poorer sections of the population who still have faith in the anti-corruption and pro-common man plank ing unsolved problems of the capital city — for him is not known. However, it is generally believed that Kejriwal’s support base comprises the slum-dwellers and the poorer sections of the population who still have faith in the anti-corruption and pro-common man plank with which he has been associated ever since the time when he
was a part of Anna Hazare’s movement in the closing years of the Manmohan Singh government. It is the middle class, however, which is uneasy about his quirky brand of politics and is likely to turn even more against him as a result of his latest acts. The main grouse of this group against Kejriwal is his unending confrontations with whoever he believes is his enemy. It is not only the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who are his targets. He also found it impossible to get along with his earlier close supporters like Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, who were virtually hounded out of the AAP. A main reason is his reluctance to accept being the Chief Minister of a Union Territory rather than of a full state. Although other Chief Ministers had also sought an elevation of Delhi’s status, they never engaged in constant warfare against the Centre or its representative, the Lieutenant Governor. The support which he is receiving from the BJP’s inveterate opponents has apparently made him all the more adamant, leading to a situation where governance in the national capital is being held hostage to the Chief Minister’s hubris. The Election Commission can thus hold a mid-term election for the Delhi assembly to see whether the voters still retain faith in him.
hey are Muslims, yet they sing Krishna bhajans (hymns) from Hindu lore. They have adopted a hybrid culture that is a mix of both religions and lifestyles. Many of their names too blend two religions, like Shankar Khan and Krishna Khan. They are the Manganiyaars, who hail from western Rajasthan, where a thriving legacy of secular music has touched the hearts of music lovers not just in India, but in many countries across the world where they have played. But they remain a struggling lot at home. According to Manjoor Khan, a grandly-turbaned Manganiyaar folk singer, their art has flourished under the Rajputs. “Hindu Rajputs have kept our legacies live; they have protected us and kept our art living and thriving. For years, we have been singing for them,” Khan told IANS. “Since centuries, our ancestors brought in a musical tradition, soaking the rhythmic waves emanating and emerging from Persia and Punjab. Over the years, our music earned fame as our melodies transcended the boundaries to win hearts of people across the world,” he added. Ganga-Jamuna culture — as many Muslims residing here, since their birth, have adopted the lifestyle and dress of Hindus due to centuries of cultural osmosis between the two religions. Manganiyaars’ music blends the traditions of Hindustani and Sufi music. Many generations were connected to both Muslim and Hindu families to earn their livelihood where they sang and composed music for their jajmaans (patrons).
Western Rajasthan truly symbolizes the cultural pluralism of India as many Muslims residing here, since their birth, have adopted the Hindu lifestyle The Manganiyaars story is incomplete without mentioning Langas, their musical cousins. Langa means “song giver” and it includes poets, singers and musicians from Barmer. But, the Manganiyaars now battle for their existence on home turf. Bhungar Khan Manganiyaar, who performs in various countries, complains this age-old legacy lacks support from the Indian government and the new age generation is losing interest in this music.

Earlier, the government won the vote 319 to 303, after assurances were accepted by would-be rebels that MPs would have a meaningful say, reports BBC. The PM called it a “crucial step” in delivering a “smooth” Brexit.

Mattis to visit Seoul to discuss Korean Peninsula situation SEOUL: US Defense Secretary James Mattis will travel to Seoul next week to meet his South Korean counterpart and analyze the current military situation on the Korean Peninsula amid the ongoing rapprochement with North Korea. The meeting between Mattis and Song Young-moo is scheduled for June 28, a spokesperson for the South Korean Ministry of National Defense told Efe news. Both officials will discuss “various ways related to follow-up measures to North Korea-US (summit) talks and South-North Korea relations,” another spokesperson for the min-

The temporary suspension of the annual US-South Korea joint military maneuvres in August could also be addressed, which will help facilitate future discussions with Pyongyang and its denuclearization as agreed in the US-North Korea summit on June 12 in Singapore. China also appears to be working hard not to be marginalized in the fast-paced nuclear diplomacy surrounding the Korean Peninsula by bringing the North closer to its side after years of chilled relations over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile provocations. The KCNA also reported Kim visited the Sci-tech Innovation Institute under the Chinese Acade-

anadian Parliament has passed a “historic” bill legalizing the recreational use of marijuana nationwide, becoming the second country in the world to do so. The Cannabis Act passed its final hurdle on Tuesday in a 52-29 vote in the Senate. The bill controls and regulates how the drug can be grown, distributed and sold, the BBC reported. Canadians will be able to buy and consume cannabis legally as
early as this September. Uruguay became the first country to legalize the sale of cannabis for recreational use in December 2013 while
nine US states and the District of Columbia also allow recreational marijuana use. Thirty US states allow marijuana for medical use. Cannabis possession first became a crime in Canada in 1923 but medical use has been legal since 2001. The bill will likely receive Royal Assent this week and the government will then choose an official date when the law will come into force. On Twitter, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised the bill and focused on Canada’s youth.
During their meeting, Xi and Oli discussed ways and means to further expanding bilateral cooperation in various fields including through cross border railway connectivity. Xi told Oli that China “stands ready to strengthen cooperation with Nepal in infrastructure connectivity, post-disaster reconstruction, trade and investment under the framework of the BRI”. “China appreciates Nepal’s resolute adherence to the one-China policy and will support its efforts to safeguard national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Xi said. He said “Beijing supports Nepal’s self-selection of social systems and development of roads suited to its national conditions.

Indian-American mother’s crusade leads conviction of son’s murderer After the verdict, Pravin’s mother Lovely Varughese told the Chicago Tribune that ‘Pravin’s day finally came. He can rest in peace now’ IANS, CARBONDALE (US)

fter a four-year crusade by an Indian-American mother seeking justice for her murdered son, the assailant has finally been convicted. A jury last week found Gaege Bethune guilty of Pravin Varughese’s murder in Carbondale in 2014, according to media reports. After the verdict, Pravin’s mother Lovely Varughese told the Chicago Tribune: “Pravin’s day finally came. He can rest in peace now.” After authorities had dismissed Pravin’s death as an accident, his mother waged the relentless crusade mobilizing politicians, media and the public. Under pressure, authorities ordered a fresh investigation and appointed a special prosecutor. Carbondale Police Chief Jody O’Guinn was also dismissed. Bethune now faces a sentence of 20 years to 60 years.

The 19-year-old Pravin’s body was found in a forested area in a frozen condition in February 2014, four days after the Southern Illinois University student went missing. The local coroner declared his death an accident caused by exposure to extreme cold.
But his family commissioned an independent post-mortem which found that he had died from a severe blow to his head and had other injuries. Lovely Varughese held several news conferences and addressed vigils to draw attention to the finding.

The family’s campaign rallied the support of community, with over 500 people attending his death anniversary observance. Congressman Danny K. So he said that he should be allowed to build car park spaces. According to the report, a planning application has been pending with Hillingdon Council since 2015. Unable to secure approval for his car park, Arora was allowed to build a smaller version — 1,000 spaces and five storeys — on the site, which opened in 2017. Now, Arora wants to expand this by adding another four floors and undercut parking charges at Heathrow.

Indian Embassy in Paris. Swaraj left Paris on June 19 afternoon the successful comple-
tion to her maiden visit to France in her current role. Swaraj reached Paris for a whirlwind 24-hour visit to the French capital, her first visit to France since taking charge as India’s External Affairs Minister in May 2014. She called on Macron on Monday at the Palais Elysees and later held discussions with the diplomatic adviser to the French President. She also had long discussions with her French counterpart, Jean Yves Le Drian, at the Qua’ d’Orsay, the offices of the French Foreign Affairs ministry, just across the river from the French President home. In the meeting with Drian, of the numerous issues discussed, one of the most significant was the commitment by both the countries
to significantly boost their bilateral trade, which has stagnated in the 8-9 billion euro range for several years. In her address to the diaspora, Swaraj committed that her ministry and the embassy were available to the Indian diaspora at all the time”. “My ministry and this embassy is here to help you 24 by 7,” she declared, amidst loud cheers from the diaspora. But she also had a word of advice for the Indian community in Franc”. “Wherever I have visited, I have heard three things about Indians which make me very proud of our diaspora. One Indians are good neighbors, two they are hard working and three they follow the law and order.”

ristiano Ronaldo became Europe’s all-time leading scorer as Portugal beat Morocco 1-0 in their FIFA World Cup Group B match here at the Luzhniki Stadium on June 20. Ronaldo sent Portugal ahead in the fourth minute by outmuscling his marker and firing in a bullet header after a Joao Moutinho corner at Luzhniki Stadium, reports Xinhua news agency. The 33-year-old Real Madrid star has now scored 85 international goals, surpassing the mark held by Hungary legend Ferenc Puskas. His strike followed a hat-trick in Portugal’s 3-3 draw with Spain in their opening World Cup match last week. This result all but eliminates Morocco from the tournament while Portugal are almost guaranteed of a berth in the knockout stage, even before their last group fixture against Iran this week. It was not a vintage performance from Portugal as the reigning European champions seemed content to allow Morocco to control possession while creating few chances on the counterattack. Fortunately for Fernando Santos’s men, the African side’s lack of quality in the final third proved telling as a number of chances went begging. Ronaldo’s strike gave his team the perfect start and the Portugal captain nearly made it 2-0 minutes later by rolling the ball back under his foot, turning and shooting just wide of the left post. Despite trailing, Morocco

KAZAN: Diego Costa scored a scrappy second-half winner to help Spain edge past doughty Iran in a key Group B FIFA World Cup game on June 20. After a barren first-half where Spain were left frustrated as Iran defended brilliantly, Costa (54th) broke the deadlock albeit in fortuitous circumstances. Costa’s neat turn and quick shot took a deflection off Iranian defender Ramin Rezaeian to beat goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Iran tried to launch a comeback and almost equalized when Saeid Ezatolahi’s goal was correctly ruled out because of offside by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Vigliano Mauro.
Uruguay beat Saudi Arabia to enter pre-quarters ROSTOV-ON-DON (RUSSIA): Veteran striker Luis Suarez marked his 100th international with a winning goal as Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia 1-0 in a Group A clash on June 20 to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup. and Karim El Ahmadi orchestrated play through the middle but their teammates were guilty of spurning a number of gilt-edged chances. Khalid Boutaib directed a head-
er straight at goalkeeper Rui Patricio and Mbark Boussoufa just failed to reach a Nabil Dirar cross before being crowded out by Portugal’s defense.
Karim Ansarifard also rifled into the side netting for the Asian side as Spain were on the tenterhooks for most parts of the second-half. This was Costa’s third goal of the tournament after netting a brace in Spain’s rip-roaring 3-3 draw against Portugal in the group opener. Spain are now level on points with Portugal in Group B, while Iran are in third and Morocco are eliminated following their loss earlier in the day.
Morocco’s best chance of the first half arguably came in stoppage time when Belhanda’s flickon from a set piece almost allowed Benatia to head in at the far post. Herve Renard’s side continued to hold the initiative after the break. Belhanda shot straight at Patricio after being fed by Amrabat on the left and Belhanda’s towering header from a free-kick then forced a superb diving save from Patricio. Santos replaced Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva with Sporting Lisbon’s Gelson Martins on the hour mark in a bid to capitalize on open spaces left by Morocco’s high defensive line. But chances continued to fall for Morocco.

ngland registered a world record total of 481 for 6 against Australia in their third One-Day International (ODI) cricket match this week. Alex Hales (147 off 92) and opener Jonny Bairstow (139 off 92) plundered Australian bowlers all around the park as England bettered their previous world’s highest total of 444/3 set in 2016 against Pakistan. Jason Roy (82 off 61) and Eoin Morgan (67 off 30) also contributed handsomely to England’s cause as the hosts put up a massive total that could seal the series for them in the third match, after wins in the first two matches in

he Indian women’s team ended their Spain tour on a bright note as they defeated the hosts 4-1 in the fifth and final match at the Consejo Superior de Deportes Hockey Stadium. India dominated the match in terms of possession and chances created, and were efficient enough as Rani (33rd, 37th minute) scored a brace to give her team a two-goal cushion. India’s skipper was backed by two well converted penalty corners by defender Gurjit Kaur (44’, 50’) towards the closing stages of the match. Spain’s Lola Riera (58’) scored the consolation goal for the hosts. The visitors maintained the upper-hand in the tie from the start as they dominated possession

and put the hosts under pressure in the opening few minutes. The second minute saw Indian forward Vandana Katariya get a sight on the Spanish goal but the 26-year-old’s effort was saved by Spain’s goalkeeper Maria Ruiz. India’s swift start saw them win two consecutive penalty corners in the first five minutes, but Ruiz was
called into action again, and she was up to the task. The second quarter saw a similar story as India maintained pressure on the hosts and did not give away possession easily. The World No. 10 team showed quality in the midfield and had an attempt by young forward Lalremsiami saved by Maria Ruiz.

Talking about his Dil Hi Toh Hai role, Karan told IANS: “He is young, he is successful, he is popular with the ladies. He enjoys himself like any other boy in that category would. It’s not like how we have typical heroes in television, and stereotype them that if he is nice, he won’t ever do XYZ thing. “This character is always surrounded by women and he enjoys the fact that he gets the attention. A lot of youngsters will relate with this.”

‘Race 3’: It’s trashy beyond endurance
B
y the time, Salman Khan ripped off his short and Bobby Deol followed suit, I was ready to rip off my hair in exasperation. This maddening mishmash of hot babes and cool guys (including Anil Kapoor who lets his beard grow grey and his accent falter from Angrezi to Bhojpuri, all for a cause) is a roaring grunting mess of a movie. Trashy beyond endurance, loud beyond the threshold of tolerance and outrageous beyond all definitions of lowbrow entertainment, Race 3 gives a bad name to the Salman Khan brand. Just when we though he was trying to build a more durable variety of mass entertainment by reinventing himself in Bajrangi Bhaijan, Sultan and the unfortunate Tubelight, Race 3 comes along to remind us with infuriating aggressiveness, that when it comes to Salman, there is a very thin line between rationale and absurdity. He skips, jumps and crosses over into the kingdom of crassness with such daring impunity that you wonder what lies ahead in store for this hero of the masses who it seems, has decided to abandon all efforts to give a performance. Here in Race 3, Salman is so

Poor attendance marred the sanctity of Yoga
BY AJAY AGNIHOTRI n Ju n e 1 6 , 2 0 1 8 f o u r t h International Yoga Day, organized by Consulate General of India in Chicago, as per the directives of Government of India. The event was organized in the sprawling lush green Millennium Park in Downtown Chicago. The event was organized in association with City of Chicago and Chicago Sister Cities International committee, NRI Seva, Gayatri Pariwar, Adani North America, State Bank of India, Air India, MAFS, ISA Foundation, BPAS, Brahma Kumaris and many other organizations. The security to the event was provided by Agha Khan Community. The Consulate office press release, quoted the vent the high-profile event was inaugurated by lighting of the lamp and singing of the National Anthems of Republic of India and United States of America. As per the official release it was one of the mega events in Chicago in which about 100 community organizations and over 1000 Indian Americans and people belonging to other nationalities participated, along with their family and friends. The event started at 10.45 hrs. with the demonstration of breathing techniques by Sister Tina from Brahma Kumaris of Chicago and a dance item by the students of Soorya Dance School. After this, the event shifted to its main official opening ceremony which included lighting of the lamp which was followed by demonstration of Common Yoga Protocol and concluded with the recitation of Shanti Mantras. Ms. Neeta Bhushan, Consul General of India in Chicago conducted the event and welcomed the participant and volunteers. She briefed the importance of yoga working as connection between self-consciousness to universal consciousness. A healthy balance between soul and body. Many elected officials, business leaders and community activists attended or addressed the event. The illuminaraies included Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Congressman, Andrea Zopp Former Deputy Mayor of Chicago, Smitha Shah, Chair, Delhi Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, Mickey Straub, Mayor of Burr Ridge, Ram Villivalam, Illinois Senate 8th District, Joe Moore, Alderman, Amrish Mahajan, Tilak Marwah, Kanti S Patel,Keerthi Ravoori, Deepak Kant Vyas, Sohan Joshi, Amit Jhingan of SBI and Malini of Air India. D.B. Bhati, Consul & Head of Chancery emceed the event and delivered vote of thanks to all those who worked hard to make the event memorable. Many hyperboles were in official press release to address the event as Mega event, more than 100 association and 1000 participants. Though the location was great, weather was conducive – only thing missing was participant. It could attract only around three hundred to four hundred of IndianAmericans and people belonging to other Nationalities. The so called Mega event was
O
almost over by 2.30 PM in the absence of creative yoga sessions and participants had been reduced to less than hundred. To the regular participants in yoga day event it seems that event is organized each year as a compulsion due to directives from India. The first Yoga Day celebration in Chicago in 2015 was disaster due to heavy Indian politician’s presence. The second Yoga Day was worst as was celebrated in far off location to high light, promote motel owner and the show was run by him, with only attendance of two hundred to three hundred. The Third yoga day was much organized and well attended. The fourth yoga day is again a disaster, though official numbers are thousands, in reality not more than three hundred people attended the event- which included the consulate staff, courtiers, sycophants, passer-by, curious tourists and others. The advertising material has included more than thirty five sponsors and organizations, probably it all failed as is evident from the poor organizational skills, advertising, right participants. Year after year it seems to be coercion and burdensome on Consul General to organize the event to have press release, photo ops, photo up-load on official web site, TV interviews and official directive compliance. The event was disrupted by many photo sessions on stage, political speeches and expression of gratitude which had no interest or yoga connection to most of the participants. It was a good one hour stage occupation by nonyoga activities. Eventual remaining participants too, lost interest in the event. In the opinion of Young Turk M Akhtar, “The failure of the event has many reasons being repeated year after year including – Poor Organization, Very Poor advertising, No notification on the event place, more emphasis on photo sessions and political appearances, presence and efforts to soothe alter egos of many heavyweight community businessmen, leaders and Video photographer. Not any yoga school, studios or teachers were visible at the event. The yoga day should be organized to spread the message, awareness towards yoga and its importance in health of body and soul”. Few Facts about Yoga-Yoga is a combination of science, an art, a practice to make body and soul healthy-Yoga in its purpose and intent has always been about re-connection, reunion with our Soul, and the mind and body working as one. “The word yoga means to ‘unite’ or ‘oneness’ and is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means ‘to join’. This unity or joining is described in spiritual terms as the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness. On a more practical level, yoga is a means of balancing and harmonizing the body, mind and emotions.” This is done through the practice of postures (asana), breathing (pranayama) and relaxation (shavasana & Yoga Nidra). “Physical and mental cleansing and strengthening is one of yoga’s most important
achievements. What makes it so powerful and effective is the fact that it works on the holistic principles of harmony and unification. According to medical scientists, yoga is successful because of the balance created in the nervous and endocrine system which directly influences all other systems and organs of the body.” Yoga is experiential knowledge and this is different to intellectual knowledge which is gained through books and study. Yoga Came FromYoga is said to have originated in India during the Golden Age, nearly 26,000 years ago. The actual Sanskrit word, when broken down, means “to control”, “to yoke” or “to unite”. The word has also been translated to mean “joining”, “uniting” and “union”. The union is made between the self and the spirit. It embodies the natural state of being and spiritual enlightenment. Physical Benefits of Yoga 4Increased Flexibility 4Increased Strength 4Improved Balance 4Increased Stamina 4 Improved Body Alignment (reduces joint pain) Mental Benefits of Yoga 4Stress Reduction 4Body Awareness 4Better Sleep 4Improve self-confidence 4Relaxation There are six branches of Yoga are: 4Hatha yoga - physical and mental branch - involves asana and pranayama practice - preparing the body and mind 4Raja yoga - meditation and strict adherence to the “eight limbs of yoga” 4 Karma yoga - path of service to consciously create a future free from negativity and selfishness caused by our actions 4Bhakti yoga - path of devotion - a positive way to channel emotions and cultivate acceptance and tolerance 4Jnana yoga - wisdom, the path of the scholar and intellect through study 4Tantra yoga - pathway of ritual, ceremony or consummation of a relationship. Yoga has thirteen types and styles of yoga: 4Ashtanga yoga: based on ancient yoga teachings but popularized in the 1970s, each of the six established sequences of postures rapidly link every movement to breath. 4Bikram yoga: held in artificially heated rooms at temperatures of nearly 105 degrees and 40% humidity, Bikram is a series of 26 poses and sequence of two breathing exercises. 4Hatha yoga: a generic term for any type of yoga that teaches physical postures. When a
class is labeled as “hatha,” it is usually a gentle introduction to the basic yoga postures. 4Iyengar yoga: focused on finding the proper alignment in each pose and using props such as blocks, blankets, straps, chairs and bolsters to do so. 4Jivamukti yoga: meaning, “liberation while living,” jivamukti yoga emerged in 1984, incorporating spiritual teachings and vinyasa style practice. Each class has a theme, which is explored through yoga scripture, chanting, meditation, asana, pranayama, and music, and can be physically intense. 4Kripalu yoga: teaches practitioners to get to know, accept and learn from the body. In a Kripalu class, each student learns to find their own level of practice on a given day by looking inward. The classes usually begin with breathing exercises and gentle stretches, followed by a series of individual poses and final relaxation. 4Kundalini yoga: the Sanskrit word kundalini means coiled, like a snake. Kundalini yoga is a system of meditation directed toward the release of kundalini energy. A class typically begins with chanting and ends with singing, and in between features asana, pranayama, and meditation designed to create a specific outcome. 4Power yoga: an active and athletic style of yoga adapted from the traditional ashtanga system in the late 1980s. 4Sivananda: a system based on a five-point philosophy that holds that proper breathing, relaxation, diet, exercise, and positive thinking work together to form a healthy yogic lifestyle. Typically uses the same 12 basic asanas, bookended by sun salutations and savasana poses. 4Viniyoga: intended to be adaptable to any person, regardless of physical ability, viniyoga teachers are required to be highly trained and tend to be experts on anatomy and yoga therapy. 4Yin: a quiet, meditative yoga practice, also called Taoist yoga. Yin yoga enables the release of tension in key joints: ankles, knees, hips, the whole back, neck, and shoulders. Yin poses are passive, meaning the muscles should be relaxed while gravity does the work. 4Prenatal yoga: yoga postures carefully adapted for people who are pregnant. Prenatal yoga is tailored to help people in all stages of pregnancy and can support people in getting back into shape after pregnancy. Restorative yoga: a relaxing method of yoga, spending a class in four or five simple poses using props like blankets and bolsters to sink into deep relaxation without exerting any effort in holding the pose. Yoga has more than 250 Asanas, practically for all organs of body. Yoga in its full form is a healthy way to live long, live healthy. It is imperative to note that many participants of Yoga Day voiced that this event should be organized couple of times in a year and if possible by a qasi government organization.

rime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21 said that Yoga has the power to unite individuals, society, country and the world at large, and has emerged as a major unifying force globally. “Yoga has become one of the most powerful unifying forces in the world. It unites individuals, families, society, country and the world,” Modi said while leading the fourth International Yoga Day celebrations in Uttarakhand. He said that the world has embraced Yoga and glimpses of this can be seen in the manner in which the International Day of Yoga is marked every year. “In fact, Yoga Day has become one of the biggest mass movements in the quest for good health and well-being,” he said. The Prime Minister said that yoga is beautiful because it is “ancient yet modern”. “It is constant yet evolving. It has the best of our past and present and a ray of hope for our future. In yoga, we have the perfect solution to the problems we face, either as individuals or in our society,” he further added. In today’s fast changing times, yoga binds together a person’s body, brain and soul, hence giving one the feeling of peace. “The way to lead a calm, cre-

Instead of increasing suffering, yoga heals,” he said. PM Modi said that yoga is one of the most precious gifts from the ancient Indian sages to mankind. He noted the International Yoga Day is being celebrated across the world. “From Dehradun to Dublin, Jakarta to Johannesburg ... people are celebrating yoga day all across the world.” Thanking Prime Minister Modi for selecting Dehradun to host the main event, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said the move would also give a boost to tourism in the state. IADO campaigns for J B Pritzker T BY A STAFF WRITER he Indo-American Democratic Organization (IADO) & JB for Governor on June 11 hosted a ‘South Asian American Community Meet & Greet’ with J. B. Pritzker, Democratic nominee for Illinois Governor, and his running mate and Democratic Nominee for Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton for the November 6 elections. The two shared updates from the campaign trail, their vision for Illinois and why their progressive agenda will serve the best interests for the South Asian American community in Illinois. They were joined by Honorary CoChairs for the event--US Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chicago 47th Ward Alderman (city council member) Ameya Pawar and IADO president and Democratic nominee for Illinois State Senate, 8th District Ram Villivalam.
Best candidate Pritzker, lovingly called JB or Jay, thanked IADO for making it possible for him to “speak with and hear from some great leaders in the South Asian-American community.” Said one attendee: “By far, he is the best candidate. My entire family will be voting for him. While one South Asian American shouted slogans like “Go, JB, Go”, another said he was dying to see him emerging victorious, and making Illinois great again. Illinois Democrats are choosing to run JB following the defeat of former Democratic Governor Pat Quinn in the 2014 election against Governor Bruce Rauner.
Dire situation The socio-economic situation in Illinois leading up to the November 6 polls is dire. The state has been without a budget for two years, leaving its colleges, universities and vital health and social service agencies to spend down their reserves, take on debt and beg from the public in order to continue operating. Several unions who have endorsed JB say Rauner’s anti-worker proposals and refusal to compromise on a budget are destroying Illinois. The unions feel that Rauner’s intransigence in maintaining the budget impasse is harming a wide swathe of business interests that rely on various forms of state spending. Pritzker has spent his life standing up Democratic values, fighting for social and economic justice, and expanding opportunity for people all across the state of Illinois.
Tech jobs Just a few years ago, when Illinois was way
behind in the creation of technology jobs, JB spearheaded the effort to build 1871, a nonprofit small business incubator. 1871 brought together the educational and civic resources to support start-up businesses and has already created more than 7,000 good paying jobs in Illinois. A national leader in early childhood education, JB has worked for decades to improve the lives of at-risk children by helping to create and expand early learning programs. As a result of his work, JB was asked by President Obama in 2014 to help organize the White House Summit
on Early Childhood Education. JB helped support the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University, which has become a national leader in reversing miscarriages of justice and helping the falsely accused prove their innocence.
Quality of life He also served as Chairman of the Illinois Human Rights Commission, the state’s civil rights court. There, JB stood up for the rights of victims of gender, racial, religious and sexual orientation discrimination and worked to ensure
that people with disabilities have equal access to jobs and quality of life. IADO, established in 1980, is Illinois’s leading South Asian political action committee which engages and advocates for South Asian American communities in the political process. For over 30 years, it has served as a strong, unified voice for all South Asian Americans across the great Chicago region and Illinois. IADO leads voter registration and mobilization, engages elected officials, recruits candidates and advocates for a progressive agenda that benefits all working and immigrant families.

In a tradition that started 30 years ago, the graduation ceremony began with a puja invoking Mother Saraswati’s blessings and recitation of the Taittiriya Upanishad. A short message by Swami Sharanananda (Chinmaya Mission, Chicago) praised the graduates’ hard work and exhorted them to continue their spiritual journey beyond school. Swami Sivatmananda (Chinmaya Mission, Austin) assured the students that their spiritual learning will guide them through their lives to always choose the right path. Graduates were recognized for their academic achievements and their spiritual growth in the Bala Vihar program. The students shared their experiences at the Chinmaya Mission and how the friendships and the values learned at Bala Vihar helped
C

They were also confident that these same values will carry them through college and beyond as they pursue the various fields of Engineering, Medicine, Journalism, Teaching, etc. The graduates were then welcomed into the Chinmaya Mission Youth Kendra program to continue their spiritual journey through their college years. Chinmaya Mission Bala Vihar Program is for children Pre-K through Grade 12 (ages 4 to 18). The Bala Vihar classes are conducted every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year and are designed to instill timeless values. As the children learn values from Ramayana, Bhagavatam, Bhagavad Gita and other structured syllabus, the adults attend discourses and study group discussions. The aim of Bala Vihar is to help children bloom, grow, and inculcate values through fun-filled activities. With the Mission Statement, “To help children learn values with fun, to delight like the moon and shine like the sun,” Bala Vihar enhances the overall development of the personality of a child at all levels—physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.

52 Indians detained in Oregon prison BY A STAFF WRITER HERIDAN, OR -- Dozens of South Asians seeking asylum have been detained at a federal prison in Oregon as part of President Donald Trump’s border policy. Out of the 123 immigrants that were transferred to the facility over the past month, 52 are reportedly Indian, mainly Sikhs and Christians, who say they are fleeing religious persecution, according to reports. The group also includes 13 immigrants from Nepal and two from Bangladesh. The rest come from Mexico, Brazil and China, among other countries. These immigrants have reportedly faced brutal conditions in the correctional facility, separated from their wives and children and forced to stay in their cells for hours on end, news website Quartz India noted in a report. Many only speak Hindi or Punjabi, and have not received help from translators or any legal aid, according to the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO), a social justice organization. “These detainees are isolated, have limited access to interpretation, and are atrisk of abuse in their current prison housing arrangement,” the APANO said in a post on its website, according to Quartz. The organization has been trying to coordinate help and raise funds for support, besides recruiting volunteers to help with translation. On June 18, several hundred local residents reportedly gathered near the prison to protest the detention, holding signs that
S
said “Make America compassionate again” and “Keep families together.” The asylum-seekers have been detained under the Trump administration’s new “zero tolerance” immigration policy, which was introduced in May. With this policy, all immigrants illegally crossing the border into the US can be criminally prosecuted in federal court. Any minors travelling with
them are taken into government custody. The policy is a sign of the intensifying crackdown on immigration in the US which has picked up pace since Donald Trump was elected. Indians are the fastest-growing illegal immigrant population in the country, with their number hitting half a million in 2014, according to the report, citing the Pew
Research Center. While some overstayed their student or business visas, others have made the treacherous trip across Central America to cross the border into the US. Last year, the Trump administration deported 460 Indian illegal immigrants, and another 33 were sent home earlier this year.

Killer Oscar Morel
BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY -- A Brooklyn killer will spend life behind bars, with no chance of parole, for the cold-blooded murder of a popular Muslim cleric and his associate and friend two years ago. A Queens judge has sentenced Oscar Morel, three months after a jury found him guilty of the broad-daylight double-murder. The victims, Imam Maulana Akonjee and Thara Uddin, were walking home from an Ozone Park mosque at about 2 pm on August 13, 2016, when Morel, 37, came up on them from behind and started shooting. Akonjee, 55, and Uddin, 64, were returning from prayers at the Al-furqan Jame Masjid Mosque. They died at a nearby hospital. Akonjee’s death sparked rallies, and the Council on American-Islamic relations contended that the killing “corresponded with a nationwide surge in anti-Muslim hate crimes.

Indian student among P-Tech beneficiaries BY A STAFF WRITER ORWALK, CT -- A Norwalk, Ct., high school Indian American senior, Aasim Vhora, was among a group of teenagers from the city to graduate from the Norwalk Early College Academy (NECA), earning a college degree at no cost. The academy is Connecticut’s first IBM-designed P-TECH school, according to a Norwalk Community College news release. Vhora is among the 12 high-school teens officially graduated from the program–two full years early–with an associate degree from NCC on May 17. The Indian American will receive a degree in applied science within the software engineering focus. On June 18, he will graduate from Norwalk High School. This arrangement was made possible by NECA, a dual enrollment, grades 9-14 program based at Norwalk High School, established in 2014 by IBM, Norwalk Community College and the Norwalk

NECA students, who apply through a lottery with no academic screening— simultaneously earn a high-school diploma from Norwalk High School and a tuitionfree Associate degree from Norwalk Community College. Vhora was the first NECA graduate to accept a job offer from IBM. He will work as a cloud systems analyst at IBM’s Southbury
campus beginning this summer, and then, with his NCC credits, attend the University of Connecticut. The IBM Foundation founded and continues to steward the P-TECH education model, which is expected to be replicated at more than 110 schools in eight states by fall 2018, in partnership with approximately 70 community colleges and 450 affiliated companies.
Man faces 25-yr jail in sexual assault case BY A STAFF WRITER ANHATTEN, NY -- An Indian American businessman was convicted on May 30 in Manhattan, New York of sexually assaulting, choking, and brutally beating a young woman he met on a dating site. Sanjay Tripathy, of North Carolina, faces 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 18. He was ordered to be held without bail, shortly after the jury’s verdict was announced. Tripathy was found guilty of a criminal sex act, sex abuse, assault, strangulation and unlawful imprisonment in connection with a June 15, 2016, attack at the W Hotel in Times Square. The businessman, who advertised himself as a $10-million catch on the website ‘Seeking Arrangements’ had arranged to meet the 38-year-old woman, a blonde from Norway, at his hotel that evening, while he was on a business trip. The woman attended the trial. Videos shown during the trial show

Tripathy and the woman engaged in passionate kissing and touching each other. The pair went up to Tripathy’s hotel room, where, according to court testimony, the tech executive engaged in violent, sadomasochistic sex with the victim. She was able to escape when Tripathy’s
attention was briefly diverted. Tripathy has maintained that the two had engaged in consensual rough sex that he paid her for. Tripathy’s attorney Franklin Rothman said the photos only showed one side of a complex story. He said Tripathy plans to appeal.

The ICD, a diagnostic manual published by the WHO, was last updated in 1990 and its new edition, ICD-11, has included gaming disorder as a serious health condition that needs to be monitored. “Gaming disorder has been added to the section on addictive disorders,” the WHO said in a statement.

Drinking in teens may affect short-term memory IANS, NEW YORK

f you are in your adolescence and drinking excessively then it may affect your short-term memory, a new study suggests. The animal-based study, published in the journal Jneurosci, found that excessive drinking during adolescence may interfere with the activity of brain cells needed for sustaining short term memory. According to the researchers, including Michael Salling from the Columbia University in New York, the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the behavior-management abilities it supports — both of which continue
Maternal exposure to lithium may up risk of birth defects NEW YORK: Babies born to women who used lithium therapy to treat bipolar disorder during their firsttrimester of the pregnancy could be at an elevated risk of developing major congenital malformations such as heart defects, finds a study. The findings, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, showed that nearly one and one-half times as many babies exposed to lithium during the first trimester experienced major malformations compared to the unexposed group (7.4 percent compared with 4.3 percent). In addition, risk for neonatal hospital readmission was nearly doubled in lithium-exposed babies compared to the unexposed group (27.5 percent versus 14.3 percent).

The study included data from 727 lithium-exposed pregnancies compared to a control group of 21,397 pregnancies in mothers with a mood disorder but were not taking lithium. “Women should be informed on malformation risk in first-trimester exposed infants,” said Veerle Bergink, Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, US. —IANS

For the study, using a voluntary intermittent access to alcohol procedure in male mice, the researchers demonstrated that binge level con-
sumption during adolescence leads to altered drinking patterns and working memory deficits in young adulthood. The research team found that adolescent mice consuming bingelevel quantities of alcohol struggled with a working memory task and showed signs of “front-loading” — excessive alcohol use within the first five minutes of availability — in early adulthood. Further, adolescent alcohol exposure altered a number of properties of PFC pyramidal neurons, which connect the PFC to other brain areas and are therefore important for the regulation of behavior.
Radio journalist regains voice via AI IANS, LONDON
A
US radio journalist who had lost his voice two years ago due to a rare neurological condition has regained the ability to speak, thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), the media reported. Jamie Dupree, 54, a political radio journalist with Cox Media Group, got a new voice that trained a neural network to predict how he would talk, using samples from his old voice recordings, the BBC reported. With his new voice, Dupree can now write a script and use a free text-to-speech software program called Balabolka on his laptop to turn it into an audio recording. If a word or turn of phrase does not sound quite right in the recording, he can slow certain con-

sonants or vowels down, or swap a word to one that does work, or change the pitch, and he can have a full radio story ready to go live in just seven minutes. “This has saved my job and saved my family from a terrible
financial unknown,” Dupree was quoted as saying to the BBC. In 2016, Dupree was diagnosed with tongue protrusion dystonia — a rare neurological condition where the tongue pushes forward out of his mouth and his throat tightens whenever he wants to speak, making him incapable to say more than two or three words at a time. The AI system slices each word read out by an individual into 100 tiny pieces, and does this with lots of common words until eventually it understands how basic phonetics work in that person’s voice and has an ordered sequence for all the pieces in each word. The neural network can create its own sounds and predict what the person would sound like if they were to say a series of words like when one speaks during a conversation.

Can vitamin D therapy tackle diabetes?
Activating the vitamin D receptor can trigger the anti-inflammatory function of genes to help cells survive under stressed conditions, suggests new research IANS, NEW YORK
E
nhanced activation of vitamin D by protecting beta cells may be a potential new approach for treating diabetes as well as other diseases, including cancer, researchers have suggested. When beta cells — the cells in the pancreas that produce, store and release the hormone insulin — become dysfunctional, the body can not make insulin to control blood sugar (glucose) and levels of glucose can rise to dangerous and even fatal levels. The researchers found that vitamin D in cells and mouse models can be beneficial in treating these damaged beta cells. They also provided new insights
No exercise may up heart failure risk
We identified the vitamin D receptor as an important modulator of both —inflammation and beta cell survival,” said Ronald Evans, from Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California, US. Using beta cells created from embryonic stem cells, the team was able to identify a compound — iBRD9 — that appeared to enhance the activation The team of the vitamin D conducted a test receptor when it was combined with vitato look for min D to improve compounds that the survival of beta cells. improved the When cells in the pancreas become dysfunctional, the body In the paper, pubsurvival of beta lished in the journal can not make insulin to control blood sugar. Blurred vision might signal retinal disease IANS, NEW DELHI
P NEW YORK: Too busy or lazy to exercise? Men and women living without physical activity for six years during their middle age could be at an increased risk of suffering heart failure, researchers have warned. The findings, described in the journal Circulation, suggest that consistently participating in the recommended 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each week, such as brisk walking or biking, in middle age can reduce the heart failure risk by 31 percent. While it is known that people who are more physically active have lower risks of heart failure than those who are less active, but little is known about the impact of changes in exercise levels over time on heart failure risk. “Going from no exercise to recommended activity levels over six years in middle age may reduce heart failure risk by 23 percent,” said Chiadi Ndumele, Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, US. For the study, the team included 11,351 participants, with an average age 60, monitored annually for an average of 19 years. — IANS
survival of beta cells in a dish. They then tested the combination in a mouse model of diabetes and showed that it could bring glucose back to normal levels in the animals. Combining the new compound with vitamin D allowed certain protective genes to be expressed at much higher levels than they are in diseased cells. “Activating the vitamin D receptor can trigger the anti-inflammatory function of genes to help cells survive under stressed conditions,” explained Michael Downes, from the institute. The researchers noted that although the new compound did not appear to cause any side effects in the mice, further testing is needed before clinical trials can begin.
eople experiencing blurred vision or decreased color sensitivity need to get their eyes checked as these seemingly minor problems may actually indicate retinal diseases that account for a significant share of the vision loss burden in the world, experts have warned. Retinal diseases often get underdiagnosed as people feel no pain when symptoms start showing up and the other eye often compensates for the poor eye, experts from the All India Opthalmological Society (AIOS) said at a workshop
on retinal disease here. Among the various retinal disorders, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME) are the major types that account for about 8.7 percent and 4.8 percent of blindness in the world, respectively. “The common symptoms of retinal disorders like AMD include blurred or distorted vision, dark spots in central vision or straight lines appearing wavy,” said Rajvardhan Azad, President of the All India Collegium of Ophthalmology, a fellowship program of AIOS. “These diseases often go under-

eople with gout — a painful inflammatory arthritis — may not actually have an increased risk of fracture as earlier believed, show results of a new study. The findings, published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), contrast with those of previous studies, which found higher risk of fracture in people with gout. Gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, caused by the build-up of urate crystals in a joint. It can result in severe pain and swelling in joints, most often the base of the big toe, but also in other joints. To better understand the links

between gout and fracture risk, the researchers from Keele University conducted a study in Britain using a large primary care database.
It included 31,781 patients with gout who were matched to 122,961 controls and followed them for between 6.8 and 13.6 years until the first diagnosis of a fracture. The rate of fracture was similar in people with and without gout, the findings showed. In addition to it, medication to lower urate levels in people with gout did not appear to benefit or adversely affect the long-term risk of fractures. “Our use of a nationally representative cohort should enable our study findings to be generalizable not only to the UK, but also to other countries with similar health care systems,” said Zoe Paskins from Keele University.
eye specialist at Bharti Eye Hospital in New Delhi, said. Early detection of AMD and DME increases the possibility of preventing vision loss and treatment becomes difficult for those who have completely lost their sight, Azad said.
Ibuprofen unsafe for treating simple UTIs LONDON: Commonly used painkiller Ibuprofen may not be a safer alternative to antibiotics for women suffering from simple urinary tract infection, says a study published in the journal PLOS Medicine. Various studies have suggested that treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen may support recovery of a urinary tract infection, raising the possibility that the use of antibiotics could be reduced. However, the new study revealed that it is not safe to recommend Ibuprofen instead of antibiotics in uncomplicated cystitis, due to the increased risk of developing a serious upper urinary tract infection. — IANS
