Indo-Canadian doctor forges degree, fined DUBAI: An Indo-Canadian female dermatologist, found guilty of forging and using a fake diploma as well as other documents to practice medicine in Dubai, has lost her appeal against a six-month jail term. Public prosecution records showed that the 38-year-old woman managed to have the licence to work as a dermatologist issued for her after filling in her application form with false information, the Khaleej Times reported on Wednesday night. A trial court had earlier convicted her on charges of practicing medicine with a licence she had wrongfully obtained and committing forgery. It sentenced her to a six-month jail term, to be followed by deportation. —IANS

W EntErtainmEnt THE REAL KAMLI FROM HIT NBOLLYWOOD MOVIE SANJU, IMRAN EXTENDS OLIVE ot many may know that Paresh shares a deep connection with the city of Chicago. He arrived here as a young boy and grew up in Chicago. It was here on the streets of Chicago, that Paresh learnt to live and love life to the fullest. It was also here that he formed many meaningful friendships with many other Bollywood stars too. Ghelani who shifted to California a few years ago, still has family in Chicago and visits the cold chi town often, even though it was the extreme cold that led him to find another home in the West coast. The movie Sanju, has not only crossed the Rs 500 crore mark in earnings worldwide but has also gone down as one of the most successful films directed by Raj Kumar Hirani. Naturally a lot of audiences moved by the purely lovable friendship shared between Sanjay Dutt and Kamli in the movie are curious to know more about the real guy who was the friend, philosopher and anchor for Dutt, both during his rough times as well as easy times. Finding the sudden spotlight on him Paresh Ghelani, who consciously stayed away from the media glare until now, is finally ready to come out and speak about the experiences that shaped one of the most talked about friendships amongst Bollywood fans today. Ghelani who had been in India for some time now to be with the team of Sanju recently came back to the comfort of his home in the US. He took some time out to speak with Hi India on Sanjay Dutt, the friendship he shared and why it is commendable that Sanju came out to tell his tale. Reminiscing on the days he spent with

Sanjay Dutt, when both of them were young and reckless, Paresh gets both nostalgic and thoughtful. He admits that even though the world is only getting to know now about their deep friendship the two friends have always had each-others’ backs. But the foremost thing that strikes you about such a lovable friend who went through thick and thin with one of the biggest stars of India cinema remains – how did he escape the limelight for so long? Paresh gives a friendly smile and says, just because I was Sanju’s friend won’t mean that I

Bill to protect Mueller blocked in Senate Trump continued his attacks against Mueller and his team by describing them as ‘angry Mueller gang of Dems’ on Twitter, as new developments have put the probe under national spotlight IANS, WASHINGTON

Senate advances Yemen resolution in rebuke to President Trump

T

he US Senate on Wednesday blocked an expedited vote on legislation intended to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who’s leading the Russia investigation, from being fired. Republican Senator Jeff Flake, along with two Democratic senators, tried to get a unanimous consent in the upper chamber of Congress to schedule the legislation for a vote, citing escalated attacks from President Donald Trump against the wide-ranging inquiry. “With the President tweeting on a regular basis, a daily basis, that the special counsel is conflicted, that he is leading so-called 12 angry Democrats and demeaning and ridiculing him in every way, to be so sanguine about the chances of him being fired is folly for us,” Flake said.

BRIEFS California wildfire fully contained SAN FRANCISCO: The Camp Fire — the deadliest blaze in the history of California that has claimed at least 85 lives and destroyed 14,000 residences — has been fully contained, authorities announced on Sunday. Cal Fire, the state’s forestry and fire protection agency, made the announcement after spending 17 days beating back a blaze that has roared through 153,000 acres of Butte County, which is north of Sacramento, The Washington Post reported. The wildfire has charred an area the size of Chicago. Three straight days of rain helped more than 1,000 firefighters get a foothold.

‘Not aware of talk of pardon for Manafort’ WASHINGTON: White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday that she was not aware of any talk of a pardon for Paul Manafort, former campaign chairman of President Donald Trump. Manafort was accused of lying to investigators after pleading guilty to federal charges, violating a plea agreement that he signed two months ago with special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the Russia inquiry, according to a court filing made public on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported. —IANS

Republican Senator Mike Lee objected to the request, saying the bill, known as the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act, was unconstitutional. If such a bill were passed it would “fundamentally undermine the principle of separation of powers” and create a “de facto fourth branch of government”, Lee said.

WASHINGTON: The US Senate has issued a sharp rebuke to President Donald Trump, easily advancing a resolution that would end American military support for the Saudi-led campaign in Yemens civil war despite a White House effort to quash the bill. The administration on Wednesday launched an 11th-hour lobbying frenzy to try to head off momentum for the resolution, dispatching Decence Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Mike

Pompeo to Capitol Hill in the morning and issuing a veto threat less than an hour before the vote started, The Hill magazine reported. But lawmakers advanced the resolution, 63-37, even as the administration vowed to stand by Saudi Arabia following the outcry over the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Republican, who has said there is no need to vote on it. Under the Senate rules, senators can go to the floor to request a vote or passage of any bill or nomina-

tion. But any one senator can block their requests. Flake pledged that they would come back to Senate floor to try to set up the bill for a vote again. Trump continued his attacks against Mueller and his team on Wednesday by describing them as “angry Mueller gang of Dems” on Twitter, as new developments have put the probe under national spotlight. The bill that passed the Senate Judiciary Committee would protect Mueller, or any other special counsel, in the event he is fired, by codifying Justice Department regulations that say only a senior department official could fire Mueller or another special counsel. Mueller, who was appointed in May 2017, is looking into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election and any potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

‘Degrading US-Saudi ties would be a mistake’ IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday that there is no “direct information” connecting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, and he warned that it would be a “grave mistake” to degrade US-Saudi relations because of the killing. “There is no direct reporting connecting the crown prince to the order to murder Jamal Khashoggi,” Pompeo said in remarks to reporters after holding a closeddoor meeting with senators to inform them of US intelligence findings on the matter. Pompeo said that degrading US-

merican porn star Stormy Daniels has said that her lawyer Michael Avenatti had filed a defamation suit against US President Donald Trump against her wishes and sometimes spoke on her behalf without her consent. In a statement to The Daily Beast on Wednesday, Daniels, who’s given name is Stephanie Clifford, alleged that Avenatti had also repeatedly ignored her requests for accounting

information about a legal decence and safety fund that has drawn support from donors, reports The New York Times. In the meantime, she said, Avenatti launched another crowd-funding campaign without her knowledge, attributing words to her that she never wrote or said. “I haven’t decided yet what to do about legal representation moving forward,” Clifford said in her statement. “Michael has been a great advo-

Khashoggi, as Riyadh has admitted, was murdered by a group of agents who traveled to Istanbul from Saudi Arabia -- some of them close associates of the crown prince. The journalist, who had been living in the US and writing periodic columns for The Washington Post, had gone to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documents he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee. Meanwhile, Pompeo defended Washington’s involvement in the conflict in Yemen, in which some 10,000 people have died and which has become the world’s biggest humanitarian crisis at present. Michael has not treated me with the respect and deference an attorney should show to a client. “I don’t want to hurt Michael, but it’s time to set the record straight... The truth has always been my greatest ally.” Responding to the allegations, Avenatti said on Wednesday: “I am and have always been Stormy’s biggest champion. “I have personally sacrificed an enormous amount of money, time and energy toward assisting her because I believe in her... I have always been an open book with Stormy... You need only look back at her numerous prior interviews where she states we talk and communicate multiple times every day about her cases.”

eaching out to India in a big way, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said it will be madness to think of war between the two nuclear-armed states and that friendship was the only option even as he asserted that the Army and political leadership in Islamabad were on the same page on improving ties with New Delhi. Using the occasion of groundbreaking ceremony for the longawaited Kartarpur Corridor to reset his country’s troubled ties with India, he was at his conciliatory best offering a olive branch saying if India takes one step, Pakistan will take two steps. However, Khan raked up the Kashmir issue saying that it was the only festering problem between the two countries and even that can be solved with “boldness and decisive-

NEW DELHI: India reacted sharply on Wednesday to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s reference to Kashmir at the Kartarpur Corridor function saying it was “unwarranted” and that he chose to politicize the pious occasion. It also said that Jammu and Kashmir is an inalienable part of India. “It is deeply regrettable that the Prime Minister of Pakistan chose to politicize the pious occasion meant to realize the long pending demand

of the Sikh community to develop Kartarpur corridor by making unwarranted reference to Jammu and Kashmir which is an integral and inalienable part of India. “Pakistan is reminded that it must fulfil its international obligations and take effective and credible action to stop providing shelter and all kind of support to cross border terrorism from territories under its control,” the spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry said.

top Pakistani commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) who was wanted for the murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari was shot dead on Wednesday in a gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir’s Badgam district, police said, calling it “good news”. In what is seen as a major success for security forces, Naveed Jatt alias Abu Hanzullah was among the two militants killed in the gunfight that followed a cordon and search operation in Kuthpora village, Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh told the media. “Yes, we have ground confirmation that one of the two terrorists killed in Badgam was Naveed Jatt,” the officer said. Naveed Jatt, who hailed from Multan in

Shujaat Bukhari

Pakistan, was the most wanted LeT commander in Kashmir. He was wanted for the June murder of “Rising Kashmir” Editor Bukhari in Srinagar. Bukhari was killed by militants along with two security guards. Police believe Naveed Jatt was among the three militants who carried out the crime. He had escaped from police custody on February 6 when he was taken from the Srinagar Central Jail to S.M.H.S. Hospital in the city. Two policemen were killed during the escape. The Pakistani was operating in south and central Kashmir. Intelligence agencies believe he was playing a major role in trying to woo youths towards militancy. Dilbag Singh told the media: “More than two dozen militants have been killed in the

last one week. They would lift boys and force them to join militancy. They would also torture them. “Their elimination is good news for the peace-loving people. “For the last two months, no new youth has joined militancy in the Valley. That is a welcome development.” The police chief said that security forces do their best to ensure that civilians were not harmed during anti-militancy operations. “Stone pelting incidents have come down. Lesser the number of militants, better for the people. Youths should desist from going to encounter sites. “The militant outfits are unable to recruit more youths. With fresh infiltration, sometimes the number of militants operating here goes up,” he said.

Kashmir’s grand alliance depends on Mehbooba, Omar How upset BJP was at the likelihood of Kashmir suddenly slipping out of its grasp was evident from RSS pointsman in the BJP, Ram Madhav, seeing Pakistan’s hand behind the alliance Malik has given for his hasty act was to prevent “horse-trading”, an euphemism for the crossing over of the MLAs of one party to another. AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

here has been an element of unseemly haste and even recklessness in some of the recent acts of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Such hurried initiatives have been seen in its impetuous bid to start the construction of the Ram temple as soon as possible and now in the peremptory dissolution of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly. What is more, the motives for these rash steps are so palpable that it does little credit to the party’s capacity for hiding its tracks. In the case of the temple, for instance, it is obvious that the rush for starting work is related to the BJP’s and the Sangh parivar’s belief that the only way to bolster the party’s seemingly dwindling electoral fortunes is to lay the foundation stone for the temple. In Kashmir, the swiftness of Governor Satyapal Malik’s step to dissolve the assembly can be easily ascribed to the possibility of the BJP’s opponents in the state being able to form a government by cob-

bling together a mahagathbandhan (grand alliance). It appears that the BJP did not foresee the likelihood of the three constituents of the alliance — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the National Conference (NC) and the Congress — coming together to form a government, presumably because the PDP and the NC are not the best of friends.

Since their combined strength of 55 members, comprising the PDP’s 28, the NC’s 15 and the Congress’s 12, gives them a comfortable majority in the 87-member legislature, dissolving the House was the only option left to the Governor and the BJP to stop them even if it does not meet a judicial challenge. One of the explanations which

indeed taking place, it was probably at the BJP’s behest as it tried to wean away MLAs from its erstwhile ally, the PDP, and even the NC in order to form a government with the willing assistance of Sajjad Lone of the People’s Conference. It is possible that the PDP and the NC decided to pre-empt the defections from their parties by coming together despite their long-standing mutual animosity. To strengthen their position, they also roped in the Congress even as

the latter displayed its habitual caginess by saying that the unity move was only a proposal. How upset the BJP was at the likelihood of Kashmir suddenly slipping out of its grasp was evident from the normally level-headed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) pointsman in the BJP, Ram Madhav, seeing Pakistan’s hand behind the gathbandhan. Although he later backtracked on being challenged by the NC’s Omar Abdullah to prove his allegation, the insalubrious episode again showed how eager the saffronites are to brand their opponents as anti-nationals. In Kashmir, the anger of the Hindutva brigade may have been all the greater because they were on the verge of being outmanoeuvred by the “anti-nationals”, thereby frustrating all of the BJP’s efforts to maintain its grip on the state which started with the appointment of Malik, a former member of the party, as the governor in place of the neutral bureaucrat, N.N. Vohra, who could not be expected to play a partisan game.

Memories fade: 10 years after 26/11 Mumbai terror mayhem Ten heavily-armed terrorists killed 166 persons and left another 300 injured QUAID NAJMI, MUMBAI

T

en years after the dastardly Mumbai terror attacks, memories of the bloody mayhem seem to have faded in peoples minds like some horrible nightmare – but for survivors and families of victims the day still evokes dread. Except for symbolic memorial services all over the city planned by VVIPs for photo-ops and the mandatory media coverage, there is barely any evidence of public emotion over those harrowing 60 hours which shook the nation’s soul. Ten heavily-armed terrorists, sneaking in through the Arabian Sea, attacked multiple locations within a small geographical area,

killing 166 persons — including Indian security personnel and 26 foreign nationals — and left another 300 injured, besides inflicting huge damage to public and private properties. The toll on the nation’s collective social-political psyche was higher, but the scars have apparently healed. “Whatever happened was very sad for the country. We remember the victims… But, all have moved ahead in life and think of a bright future,” said Rakesh Upadhyay, director at an ayurvedic pharmaceutical company. He was among the millions worldwide who remained glued to the television during the November 26-28, 2008, terror attacks and

watched the real-life drama live – and it unfolded like some unbelievable Hollywood disaster film. “It was a massive national tragedy, we still feel bad about what happened, especially for the innocent victims. Now, it feels like a bad dream. Everyone is busy tackling major problems of daily life,” shrugged a middle-class housewife, Minakshi Baikar, adding how her son Atharva was a then a year-old toddler and is now 11. However, Sharda Bhosale, 60-

year-old widow of martyred policeman Balasaheb Bhosale (he was in the team that helped nab Kasab at Chowpatty) has yet to come to terms with his death, her son, traffic policeman Deepak Bhosale, said. “Each year, on November 26, she invariably falls ill over my father’s painful death and his memory... She remains like that for at least 5-6 days. The entire family shudders every time the calendar changes to November,”

Deepak told IANS. As the day looms closer, dark memories of the attacks flicker alive, reminding people of how the extremists unobstrusively entered Mumbai to execute their sinister plans on a cold evening. Alighting from a hijacked dinghy at a small fishing bay near Colaba, they divided themselves into groups of 2-3 and systematically went after their surgicallyplanned targets, catching everyone unawares.

Coming: ‘Passport Seva Kendras’ across country The government is planning to open such centres in each of the 543 parliamentary constituencies IANS, NEW YORK

T

o ensure a smooth passport experience for its citizens, the Indian government has announced to open “Passport Seva Kendras” in each of the 543 Parliamentary constituencies across the country by March 2019. According to Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh, the project will allow a faster delivery of passports to the citizens. “This project will ensure better services for our citizens abroad. It is a service which is truly meant for citizens,” said the minister during the global launch of the programme

at India’s Consulate here. Singh was on a US trip to inaugurate “Passport Seva” projects in New York, Washington DC and Atlanta. According to the minister, the project will have an easy and convenient application submission process, standardisation, digital overhauling, status tracking and enhance security. “We plan to have a Passport Kendra in each head post office (in India) so that any citizen doesn’t have to travel beyond 50-60 km for his or her passport services,” Singh added. Last year witnessed a 19 per cent growth in passport-related services. “The monthly submission of

applications has crossed one million mark for the first time and more than six crore passports have been issued through the ‘Pasport Seva’ system,” informed Singh. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken several measures to improve the passport service delivery experience in the recent past. The MEA took the latest decision to open “Post Office Passport Seva Kendras” (POPSKs) in all constituencies with the Department of Posts. The MEA has initiated a pilot project at the High Commission of India in London followed by the Consulate General of India in Birmingham and Edinburgh.

hile talks and terror cannot go together, we must delink the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2011 and the proposed Kartarpur Sahib corridor, Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh has asserted. In a significant development, India has responded positively to Pakistan’s invitation to the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a corridor leading up to the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur, which falls on the Pakistan’s side. “Let’s not initially raise doubts (on Pakistan over the corridor). And if they don’t do, the whole world will see. Let’s delink 26/11 and Kartarpur Sahib,” the minister said during a felicitation ceremony

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Gobind Singh Longowal (C) attended the ground breaking ceremony of Kartarpur Corridor.

at a Baltimore Gurdwara in Maryland. “Today people have to go to Dera Baba Nanak, stand on the border and look at Kartarpur Sahib. If the devotees can go up to

Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara after the construction of the corridor, nothing is better than that. “This is a religious issue. It has nothing to do with that (The Indian government’s policy that talks and ter-

ror cannot go together),” he added. Responding to the invite from Pakistan for the November 28 ceremony, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said this week that Minister for Food Processing Industries Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Puri will represent the Narendra Modi government. According to Singh, “We are willing to talk and this we laid down in 2014. We are willing to talk on any issue whatsoever provided you create an environment for talks”. “India is making all possible diplomatic efforts, talking to all friends and even to China with regard to the UN Security Council designation of Azhar Masood, the 26/11 mastermind,” the minister added.

Mary Kom clinches 6th World title The 35-year-old Mary, a mother of three, rewrote the record books when she eclipsed her joint haul of five golds with Katie Taylor of Ireland IANS, NEW DELHI

I

ndian boxing legend M.C. Mary Kom scripted history by clinching a record sixth World Championship Gold medal in the light flyweight 48 kg category after outclassing Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota 5:0 at KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium here on Saturday. The 35-year-old Mary, a mother of three and a pre-tournament favorite for the gold, rewrote the record books when she eclipsed her joint haul of five golds with Katie Taylor of Ireland. The Manipuri pugilist previously clinched the World Championship gold on 5 occasions — 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010. Welcomed by thunderous chants of “Mary Mary” at the jampacked KD Jadhav hall, the Indian took the ring with a statistical and psychological advantage over her

Ukrainian opponent. Living up to the reputation, Mary started the opening round aggressively and landed a couple of right jabs quite

early into the round before taking full control with a right-two punch combination to Hanna. However, towards the end of the first round,

the Ukrainian managed to get a shot on Mary’s face before the Indian wrestled Okhota to the ground. Mary appeared unshak-

able throughout and ended the round with a few jabs and a righthand, left-hand combo. The Indian came back with more aggression in the 2nd round, and started with a powerful hook with her right and then doubled the attack with two quick right jabs to leave her opponent rattled. A left-handed flick from Okhota pushed Mary backwards but towards the end of the round, the Indian delivered a perfect right hook to inch closer to another gold. The third and decisive round began with the Manipuri pugilist delivering a right-handed jab, and adding it up with a right-hand, left-hand combo. Another combination of punches, and a few shots at Okhota’s face left the crowd to erupt in joy when the referees announced the unanimous 5:0 verdict in the Indian’s favor.

The Indian skipper, who hit the winning runs, came in the sixth over when India, chasing a 165-run target, were at 67/1 in the sixth over. Kohli’s knock was laced with four

boundaries and a couple of sixes. The Indian skipper was involved in a crucial 60-run partnership with Dinesh Karthik, who provided valuable support with his unbeaten 18ball 22 runs. For Australia, Starc, Zampa, Maxwell and Tye picked a wicket each. Earlier, a collective batting effort guided Australia to post a respectable 164/6. slammed coach Powar’s behaviour towards her as “unfair and discriminatory” while hitting out at Diana for “supporting” her axing.

“For the first time in a 20-year long career I felt deflated, depressed and let down. I am forced to think if my services to my

country are of any value to a few people in power who are out to destroy me and break my confidence,” Mithali wrote. Mithali, however, clarified that she had no grudges against skipper Harmanpreet Kaur but clearly mentioned that her issue is with the coach. Whereas, Powar alleged that Mithali threatened retirement over the batting position in the middle of an international tournament. Despite being match fit, Mithali was dropped from playing XI against England in the semi-final match of the Women’s World Cup, which Aussies won later after thrashing England by 8 wickets in the final.

Trump in a Wall Street Journal interview published on Monday, also warned once again that he was poised to slap a third round of tariffs on Chinese goods if the two leaders fail to broker an end to the trade rift when they meet later this week in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the sidelines of the G20 sum-

mit, CNN reported. “If we don’t make a deal, then I’m going to put the $267 billion additional on,” said Trump in the interview, adding the tariff level

could either be 10 or 25 per cent. Trump said in the interview that could include tariffs on Apple products imported from China, including iPhones and laptops. Apple’s stock fell 1.5 per cent in after-hours trading, erasing earlier gains from the day. “Maybe. Maybe. Depends on what the rate is,” the President said. “I mean, I can make it 10 per cent, and people could stand that very easily.” The tariffs have drawn complaints from American businesses, who are responsible for paying the import duties. It’s also spurred concerns about renewed inflation, just as the Fed-

More than 100 S&P companies have already pre-emptively telegraphed during the third quarter earnings calls the damage further tariffs would impose on the US economy, CNN said. ‘People’s Front coming to power’

Congress President Rahul Gandhi alleged that both the BJP government at Center and TRS government in Telangana were insensitive to the plight of farmers and workers

ointly campaigning with foeturned-friend TDP leader and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Telangana, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday asserted the ‘People’s Front’ will not just come to power in the southern state but will also defeat the Modi-led BJP in 2019. Sharing the dais With Naidu at their first public meeting at Khammam, Gandhi called the state’s ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) the “B-team” of Prime Minister Modi and flayed the K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR)-led government for farmers’ distress and rising unemployment in Telangana. Simultaneously attacking Modi and KCR, Gandhi alleged that both the BJP government at Centre and TRS government in the state were insensitive to the plight of farmers and workers. “While in

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) chief made a scathing attack on Modi at an election rally in Sangareddy. “Is India your grandfather and father’s estate (jagir)? This is democracy. How many days will you be in power?” KCR asked in his inimitable style in Telugu.

Sterlite plant: TN govt faces flak CHENNAI: The ruling AIADMK government came under opposition flak on Wednesday over the manner in which it closed down the Sterlite Copper smelter plant in Tuticorin as a three-member committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) said the closure is unjustified. In a tweet, DMK President MK Stalin said it is a shame for the Tamil Nadu government that the Tarun Aggarwal committee has recommended reopening of the Sterlite Copper smelter plant with certain conditions. “Knowing that such a thing would happen, I had insisted that the decision to close down the plant should be taken in the cabinet meeting,” Stalin said. —IANS

Telangana on one side is KCR and his family and on the other are the masses — farmers, workers, women and the youth. “First the grand alliance will defeat Modi’s B team TRS in Telangana and then in Delhi we will defeat the A team, the BJP,” said Gandhi. Exuding confidence of the

alliance coming to power in the state, Gandhi said the Khammam public meeting was not just historic for the state but also for Indian politics. Besides the Congress and the TDP, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) are constituents of the ‘People’s Front’.

HYDERABAD: Intensifying the BJP’s campaign for next month’s Telangana Assembly elections, its President Amit Shah (in picture) conducted a road show in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Standing in an open top jeep, Amit Shah waved to people as a long convoy of vehicles passed through various areas in Musheerabad constituency in the heart of the city. Police imposed restrictions on vehicular traffic for Shah's road show. Earlier, addressing an election rally in Adilabad town, the BJP chief said that during the 2014 elections, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrashekhar Rao had promised to make a Dalit as the Chief Minister but after TRS won the elections he himself occupied the chair. “Will you fulfill your promise at

least now,” Shah asked the TRS chief. Shah said Telangana had surplus budget but TRS government plunged the state into Rs 2.5 lakh crore debts. He alleged that KCR was so scared of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) that he stopped celebrating Telangana Liberation Day. “If voted to power, BJP will celebrate the day on a grand scale.” The 119-member Telangana Assembly will go to polls on Dec 7.

NASA’s ‘Insight’ lands safely on Mars ‘InSight’ will detect geophysical signals deep below the Martian surface, including marsquakes and heat IANS, LOS ANGELES

N

ASA’s InSight spacecraft touched down safely on Mars on Monday, kicking off a two-year mission to explore the deep interior of the Red Planet. NASA’s online live broadcast reported InSight touched down on Mars at approximately 2:54 pm EST (1954 GMT), after a sixmonth, 300-million-mile (480million-km) journey. The lander plunged through the thin Martian atmosphere at about 2:47 pm EST (1947 GMT), heatshield first, and used a supersonic parachute to slow down. Then, it fired its retro rockets to slowly

InSight is being followed to Mars by two mini-spacecraft comprising NASA’s Mars Cube One (MarCO), the first deep-space mission for CubeSats, which attempt to relay data from InSight as it enters the planet’s atmosphere. At about 3 pm EST (2000 GMT), MarCO sent back the first picture of Mars. InSight will detect geophysical signals deep below the Martian surface, including marsquakes and heat, according to NASA. Shun China search engine project, employees tell Google IANS, SAN FRANCISCO

R SRIHARIKOTA (ANDHRA PRADESH): India on Thursday put into orbit its own Hyper Spectral Imaging Satellite (HysIS) — an earth observation satellite — and 30 other foreign satellites in textbook style. In the process, India has crossed the milestone of lifting and putting into orbit over 250 foreign satellites. India has put into orbit 269 foreign satellites till date. The notable aspect of the rocket mission is the placing of the satellites in two different orbits — one at a higher altitude and the others in a lower altitude. After the successful launch, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan said: “Once again Indian space scientists showed their excellence. It cruised 301,223,981 miles at a top speed of 6,200 mph, while being followed by two cube satellites, CNN reported. “We’ve studied Mars from orbit and from the surface since 1965, learning about its weather, atmosphere, geology and surface chemistry,” Lori Glaze, acting director of the Planetary Science Division in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, was quoted as saying. “Now we finally will explore inside Mars and deepen our understanding of our terrestrial neighbor as NASA prepares to send human explorers deeper into the solar system.”

enewing their public protests, hundreds of Google employees have demanded in an open letter withdrawal of “Project Dragonfly,” Google’s effort to create a censored search engine for the Chinese market. “Our opposition to Dragonfly is not about China: we object to technologies that aid the powerful in oppressing the vulnerable, wherever they may be,” the Google

employees wrote in an open letter published on Medium on Tuesday. “Dragonfly in China would establish a dangerous precedent at a volatile political moment, one that would make it harder for Google to deny other countries similar concessions,” they wrote. Google had earlier launched a search engine in China in 2006 but pulled the plug in 2010, citing China’s efforts to limit free speech. He, however, agreed that the risks were high. “Your probability of dying on Mars is much higher than on

In their new open letter, the Google employees said that providing the Chinese government with ready access to user data, as required by Chinese law, would make the company complicit in oppression and human rights abuses. Amnesty International also launched on Tuesday a global petition calling on Google CEO Sundar Pichai to drop project Dragonfly that would blacklist search terms like “human rights” and “Tiananmen Crackdown”. “...As the world’s number one search engine, it should be fighting for an internet where information is freely accessible. not backing the Chinese government’s dystopian alternative,” said Joe Westby, Amnesty’s Researcher on Technology and Human Rights.

BY ZOFEEN MAQSOOD

If you have seen the popular Bollywood biopic Sanju, then it is hard not to fall in love with another character called. Kamli in the movie. Played by actor Vicky Kaushal, Kamli is loosely based on the life and relationship between Sanjay Dutt and his dear friend for life Paresh Ghelani.

THE REAL KAMLI FROM HIT BOLLYWOOD MOVIE SANJU, IS A CHICAGO MAN

N

ot many may know that Paresh shares a deep connection with the city of Chicago.

Paresh gives a friendly smile and says, just because I was Sanju’s friend won’t mean that I

would want to take the limelight. I am in fact a very media shy person and I want to be known more because of my work and not because of my being friends with celebrities. Sanju too in fact was careful enough to always keep me a in a bubble. He believed that his star status should not adversely affect me in any way. So I was often seen around him but I was with people and the media wouldn’t know who I was. Another question that has everyone wondering is that how a guy from Chicago is friends with so many Bollywood stars. Recently Madhavan too wrote on social media about how Paresh holds a special place in his heart and why he should come out and be known. Paresh says, “Well, I believe a lot of people connected with me after I had known Sanju. Sometimes some stars would come to Chicago for concerts and if they wanted to go around town, the organizers referred me because I was the guy who knew all the night clubs and city so well. I remember back in the 80’s when Chunky Pandey was here I took him around. Also, I met Salman khan through someone else. Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra all of whom are great friends today. MEETING SANJAY DUTT FOR THE FIRST TIME

But the all-important question remains how did Paresh and Sanjay Dutt meet in real life. Paresh says, “What you see in movie is actually the truth of our friendship. So, it was back in the late 80’s I was a young boy doing odd jobs and modeling to pay my bills. It was around this time that a close friend whom I won’t name but is a prominent name in Bollywood suggested what if I acted in films. I said no to it but then he insisted that I must meet someone who I think would really gel with me. So, I met Sanju in a night club in New York. Though I was much younger we both had a similar love for life, we partied hard, we had long hair and we instantly took a liking for each other. After that whenever Sanju was in New York he would call me and ask to come. I would undertake that overnight drive to NYC from Chicago to meet him. We did live a colorful life, I won’t deny. But then, that’s what the movie says – you learn from your mistakes and also serve as a reminder to others to not repeat the same reckless actions. PARESH AND HIS EARLY LIFE Seeing just some glimpses from the movie where both Kamli and Sanju are seen painting the town red in hottest night clubs it may be

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

easy to assume that Paresh came from a rich background and had all the money in the world to party. However, it is far from truth in real life. Like many other immigrants, Paresh’s like began in very humble settings. He says, “My parents arrived in Chicago from Gujarat, India and struggled to find a footing. They did labor jobs to support the family. When I was 15-16 I began to see where I could pitch in. my first job was at Burger king as a dish washer. I worked menial jobs in Taco Bell, I worked as a DJ and modeled to support myself and not burden my family. When I met Sanju I was working part time as dish washer in Burger King. But Sanjay was so diligent in understanding my situation. I remember I would drive from Chicago to meet him in NYC as I couldn’t afford the flight and he understood. After our first meeting he casually called up and asked me –‘Kya kar raha hai?’ He asked me to come and accompany him to a nightclub. I told him I was barely legal and I didn’t even have a jacket to go. I remember he brought me a red jacket and we went to party. On the professional front Paresh had bigger and better dreams and he was always interested in computers. After working for a few years, he floated his own small company from his tiny bedroom. But two years later he sold his company and used some of that money to visit India. Once there he says that he always had this disruptive thinking and thought of an outof-the-box idea. Affected by so much smog in India, he thought of introducing e-rickshaws and electric scooters. He says, “I was in India for six months and research everything. But the idea though path breaking couldn’t take ahead as it was ahead of its time and there were also

practical problems such as how would homeless rickshaw pullers who slept on roads would find a place to charge their vehicles. I was disheartened that people were not ready to understand such a pioneering idea and came back to the US. Here I built a software company. But then the dotcom bust happened and I lost whatever I made in that company. Here too Sanju served as an inspiration who taught me that you will fall but you have to rise. After that I worked on a few other things including a company that provided IT services to the govt. Here I learnt from my previous mistakes and was wiser. So, after its success I sold it off to pursue other passions in life.” But what about the perception that he sold his copany for millions of dollars. He says, “I purposely do not disclose the sum as it’s a personal matter but yes I did get a million plus amount. Today Paresh is busy promoting a lot of philanthropic causes in India. I was invited for a foundation called xprize.org that invites highly successful people with philanthropic bent across the world. One of my goals is to take my philanthropic work to india and tackle problems such as women’s safety. Sanitation, water shortage etc. I am also starting a few other businesses in India and I am the co-founder of a holding company Blue dot innovations which has launched Viome, where we would be launching a breakthrough medical technology in India to cure chronic illnesses. All this keeps me busy and I keep on visiting India often. ON SANJU THE FILM

FRIDAY, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2018 30 NOVEMBER, 2018

I feel that it is extremely brave for Sanju to come out and tell his story. I remember there was always interest around his life and someone or the other would suggest making a movie or a book on it. But Sanju would always shrug it off saying that what was there in his life to boast about. He was aware of the mistakes he made and said I don’t even tell my kids to be like me. I always tell them to be like dada. But the trigger was when Sanju said that he did make mistakes, he made bad choices, he broke the law not knowing the consequences but what people did not know was that he was not anti-national. This is when Raju said that we must tell this story. Manyata too was supportive. And this was the premise of the movie. In the end I would say, “The response we got was overwhelming. When

people come to us and tell that they learnt not to be reckless then our mission is accomplished.” On his friendship with Sanju, Paresh says, “We have been together through thivk and thin and he truly is my 4am friend. We speak with each other every day.”

Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Diwali Day marked historical day at San Francisco

BY A STAFF WRITER SAN FRANCISCO, CA - November 10th, 2018, marked a historical day as an estimated 10,000 excited children and nostalgic parents came out to experience the first-ever Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Diwali Day held at San Francisco’s iconic Pier 39 to commemorate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, celebrated by Indians around the globe. The family-friendly event culminated with a spectacular fireworks show, an especially meaningful element of the program since it is the traditional form of celebration in India. While fireworks are commonly associated with major U.S. holidays such as the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve, this was the first time they were launched over the San Francisco Bay to celebrate Diwali. It was a beautiful example of cultures coming together and an understandably proud moment for the over 350,000 Asian Indians that call San Francisco and the Bay Area home--making them the second largest population of Indians in the United States. Not to be missed, close to 60,000 people tuned in via Facebook Live to view special moments from the event including the fireworks finale. Sponsored by Brooke Bond Taj Mahal Tea and produced by MIKADO International, the day-long event was free and open to the public, thoughtfully curated for the entire family to enjoy in the celebrations. In addition to savoring delicious tea samplings from the Brooke Bond Taj Mahal tea cart throughout the day, attendees eagerly lined up to receive henna tattoos, paint personalized diyas (ceremonial clay oil lamps), go for a spin on the teacup ride, snap selfies for the photo mosaic wall and participate in a meet and greet with celebrity Bollywood dancer Manpreet Toor and comedian Rajiv Satyal. The much anticipated fireworks display did not disappoint, lighting up the sky and the hearts of the tens of thousands of spectators on site and online. It was a memorable moment for all South Asians witnessing the recognition of a holiday so dear to them on display over the iconic San Francisco Bay. “Asian Indians are a strong, proud and culturally rich population with traditions that have not only survived, but continue to thrive outside of our motherland. We at Brooke Bond Taj Mahal are committed to ensuring South

BY A STAFF WRITER Having good balance is a critical component of healthy aging. Everyday activities like reaching for your coffee cup, bending down to pick up the paper, putting on your shoes, and getting up from a chair require subtle shifts in your body’s weight distribution. A healthy sense of balance allows you to hold your position or move at will during these weight fluctuations without falling. Gravity is constantly pulling you downward, giving you the tendency to fall, but your ability to balance prevents this from happening. Balance control is a complex physiological process and, just as with muscles, if you don’t use it, you lose it. As the body ages, muscle strength, joint range of motion, and reaction time all decrease. These factors can have a negative effect on an older person’s balance control and may lead to balance dysfunction - a factor linked to falls among the elderly. Falls from poor balance can cause serious, and even life-threatening, injuries. In fact, according to the CDC, accidental falls are the leading cause of death among older adults. Each year, one in three adults over the age of 65 falls, and the risk of falling increases proportionately with age - at 80 years, over half of seniors fall annually. Recovery from a fall can sometimes take at least a year in a long-term facility, with some patients never returning to their home. Among this age group, falls are the number one cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma, loss of independence, and injury deaths. Most of the fractures caused by falling are in the arm, hand, ankle, spine, pelvis, and hip, with hip fractures being one of the most serious types of fall injury, often resulting in long-term functional impairment, nursing home admission, and increased mortality - One out of five hip fracture patients dies within a year of their injury. In fact, falls account for 25% of all hospital admissions, and 40% of all nursing home admissions - 40% of those admitted to nursing homes do not return to independent living; 25% die within a year. These statistics are pretty grim but don’t for a minute think that there’s nothing you can do about it or that it won’t happen to you. Perhaps you believe that if you limit your activities and become even more sedentary that your chances of falling will decrease (not true!). If you think you can avoid falling as long as you stay at home, know this: The majority of all falls take place inside the home. Those who do fall are two-to threetimes more likely to fall again, and many people who fall, even if they are not seriously injured, develop a fear of falling. Injuries from falls, reduced mobility and activity, and the fear of falling can significantly reduce your quality of life, making you dependent on others and taking away your freedom to move and live independently. But here’s the good news: Falls are

preventable. Falling is not an inevitable result of aging, and there are steps you can take to improve your balance and decrease your chances of falling. Muscle strength and flexibility, which are an imperative part of maintaining good balance, decrease with age, especially for sedentary adults, but these can be partially restored with the right physical therapy program. Studies have shown that attention to certain risk factors, such as impaired balance, can significantly reduce rates of falling. Considerable evidence indicates that the most effective fall reduction programs involve systematic fall risk assessment and targeted interventions. Additional research reveals that a physical therapist-prescribed exercise program targeting balance and strength can be effective in improving a number of balance and related outcomes in older people with mild balance impairment. Physical Therapy Solutions is the only facility in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance and fall risk program along with a strengthening program. Assisted with a medical history from your doctor, we can perform specific tests to determine your ability to maintain your balance as well as your risk of falling. Our computerized equilibrium tests can evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system. Sensory tests assess inner ears, eyes and sense of touch in your feet and joints that contribute to balance control. Our motor tests will measure your ability to execute coordinated movements, both voluntary and involuntary, to maintain your balance. All of these tests will help define the cause of your balance problem and are the foundation of devising a unique, individualized program for you. We utilize a state-of-the-art balance machine and our balance therapy programs have a 98% balance improvement success rate. “Donate-A-Diya” project. At the Bal VIhar of St. Louis, students participated in the Donate-a-Diya project again this year. The project serves dual purpose- the students get to make and decorate a beautiful diya that they use during the Diwali puja and it remains as a keepsake that can be used year after year. The project also asks students to donate

money to a charitable cause. Each year Bal Vihar picks a handful of charities and raises funds through this initiative for them. This yea,r Bal Vihar raised over $1600 for Asha for Education, Global Giving, and Spoorthy. Boxed dinner made it easy for parents to head back home after the fireworks and enjoy the delicious food at the luxury of their homes.

Then all the participants held the plank for a minute to create the record. Asked for how long she can hold a plank on a usual day, Shilpa said: “I am capable to hold it for two minutes. Experts say that one can hold for that long if only the person is at his/her fitness best.” The initiative was organised by Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company at Armed Forces Medical College ground in Pune.

NEW DELHI: As healthy living has become a catchword these days, people have taken to eating dried fruits and health bars that can give natural nutrients. VV Mani, Director, Operations, Unibic, and Suhasni Sampath, CoFounder, Yoga Bars, explain health benefits of dry fruits and nuts. v Dried fruits generally contain more fiber than the same-sized serving of their fresh counterparts. v The various dry fruits are packed naturally with a mix of nutritional elements like potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamins and more apart from the good quality fat and protein that these provide. These help in various ways like reduction in bad cholestrol, maintaining blood pressure, blood sugar control, thyroid control and improving heart function to name a few.

Simple ways to keep pets warm in winter NEW DELHI: It is very important to keep your four-legged friends warm when the mercury dips as they can fall ill. Keep their bedding dry and stimulate fur growth to keep them warm during the harsh winter season, say experts. Khushboo Katyal, dog expert and founder of CosmoPawliton-Be Pet Smart, and Achal Gupta, pet expert and founder of Jeffurry’s: The Pet Resort, have suggested tips on how to keep your pets warm this winter. Dry bedding: No one likes a cold floor. A small bed or blanket should be all what a pet needs to keep warm during winter nights. Give them options. They may prefer to switch sleeping spots to be warmer or cooler depending on the indoor temperature. Clothing: Use pet clothing options. Puppies are less cold tolerant because they have less muscle mass and fat than the adult dogs. Muscle and fat increase their metabolism helping them keep warm. Puppy coats

won’t be as thick or long to offer protection. Little pups have less body mass to generate natural heat, too, and often benefit from a doggy sweater especially when they must do outdoor bathroom duty. Let that fur grow: Let the pups adjust gradually to outdoor chills. That stimulates their fur to grow thicker. Indoor pets won’t be as well equipped to spend time outside, so be aware and bring them back inside after only short trips to the bathroom and back. Protect skin and paws: Checking the paws of your pets in frequent intervals for any signs of cold-weather injury or damage like cracked paw pads or bleeding is very important. Try understanding problems: Try understanding what the problem is if your pet is behaving unusual. If the pet is shivering, whining, get them back inside quickly because they are showing signs of hypothermia. If you suspect your pet has hypothermia, consult your veterinarian. —IANS

o create a calm and peaceful area where you can relax in is about more than just comfortable furniture. If the walls of your living space are loud and vibrant, then it’s going to do nothing for your stress level. At the same time you don’t have to resign yourself to boring white so make sure you redesign your interiors with interesting colors. Anjali Jain, owner of Kala Drishti and Madhu Kotiya list down tips to redesign the interiors with colors. Coral color: You can go for coral shades with cooler undertones. The coral colour is a combination of hues like orange, pink and red. Coral enhances the room and brings a touch of warmth to it. Even though it’s a soothing color, yet it can also be the bold state-

ment. This color signifies peace and keeps negative feelings at bay. Mauve color: If you want your dining area a little sophisticated, then go for Mauve. This slightly subdued tint is bright enough for a fun-filled environment, but just calm enough to work in an adult’s bedroom when it is mixed with a palette of gray,

black, blue, or cream. This is related to spirituality and inspires reflection. Beige color: Beige is also known as tan or buff, cream. Beige will fade into the background as the elegant accessories pop into the foreground. To give a cozy vibe to your living area, Beige is the perfect color tone.

huge rainbow balloon arch overlooked Delhi’s Tolstoy Marg, as thousands of members of the LGBTQ+ community marched down to celebrate the 11th Delhi Queer Pride Parade. It is the first queer parade to be held after the apex court read down the Section 377 on Sept 6 this year, legalising consensual gay

sex between consenting adults. Amid slogans and placards like “Rainbow not Saffron”, “Homosexuality is not a choice but homophobia is” and “Love is love”, the community celebrated their sexual and gender identities freely. Finally armed with the freedom to love, the queer community was also sure to be vocal about the new-found ‘aazadi’, as was heard in many marching groups. Donning colourful attires and

lustrous masks, most of the participants carried rainbow pride flags and balloons. What resounded the most, however, was a powerful message layered with many meanings in today’s India: “Happy Pride”.

‘Sperm count 50% lower in men whose fathers smoke’ LONDON: While studies have repeatedly linked maternal smoking during pregnancy with reduced sperm count in male children, a new research showed that men whose fathers smoked at the time of pregnancy also had 50 percent lower count of sperms than those with nonsmoking fathers. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE, showed that, independently of nicotine exposure from the mother, socioeconomic factors, and their own smoking, men with fathers who smoked had a 41 percent lower sperm concentration and 51 percent fewer sperm count than those with non-smoking fathers. “I was very surprised that regard-

LONDON: Mannose — a nutritional supplement — found naturally in fruits can aid in slowing the growth of tumours and improve cancer treatment, says a new study. The findings, published in the journal Nature, showed that mannose enhanced the effects of chemotherapy in mice with multiple types of cancer including leukaemia, osteosarcoma, ovarian and bowel cancer. It slowed tumor growth, reduced the size of tumors and even helped increase the lifespan of some mice. Tumors use more glucose than normal, healthy tissues. However, it is very hard to control the amount of glucose in your body through diet alone. Researchers found that mannose can interfere with glucose to reduce how much sugar cancer cells can use. —IANS

There is a one in 10,000 chance the cases were a coincidence, the study published in the journal New Solutions said, because the cancers were all so similar and close together. A review of previous research confirmed that BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes — which try to stop tumours growing — can be “silenced” by exposures to dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons — both found in exhaust fumes. BRCA2 gets rapidly degraded in the presence of aldehydes - also components of exhaust fumes. “There is much more research to be undertaken,” Gilbertson said. “But we now have plausible mechanisms for inferring how the BRCA1/2 tumour suppressors in this highly-exposed border guard became dysfunctional and likely contributed to the ongoing epidemic of sporadic, early onset, premenopausal breast cancer among her colleagues.

Study: Obesity can raise asthma risk in children IANS, NEW YORK

P less of the mother’s level of exposure to nicotine, the sperm count of men whose fathers smoked was so much lower,” said Jonatan Axelsson, specialist physician at Lund University in Sweden. “We know there is a link between sperm count and chances of pregnancy, so that could affect the possibility for these men to have children in future. —IANS

arents, please take note. Obese children are at an increased risk of asthma, a new study has found. The findings suggest that the incidence of an asthma diagnosis among children with obesity was significantly higher than in those in a normal weight range and that 23 to 27 percent of new asthma cases were directly attributable to obesity. “Paediatric asthma is among the most prevalent childhood conditions and comes at a high cost to patients, families and the greater health system,” said co-author Terri Finkel from Nemours Chil-

dren’s Hospital in Orlando. “There are few preventable risk factors to reduce the incidence of asthma, but our data show that reducing the onset of childhood obesity could significantly lower the public health burden of asthma,” Finkel added. For the study published in the journal Paediatrics, the research team analysed medical records of more than 500,000 children. The researchers reviewed de-identified data of patients aged two to 17 without a history of asthma, receiving care from six paediatric academic medical centres between 2009 and 2015. Overweight or obese patients

were matched with normal weight patients of the same age, gender, race, ethnicity, insurance type and location of care. The researchers found that obesity among children with asthma appears to increase disease severity. Being overweight was identified as a modest risk factor for asthma, and the association was diminished when the most stringent definition of asthma was used.

arm relationship with classroom teachers, friendship with peers may provide a unique opportunity for harshly-parented kindergarteners to retool their negative behavior, a new study suggests. Angry, threatening and highlycritical parenting can result in children with defiant, non-compliant and revengeful behaviour that spills over to adulthood and impacts relationships with all authority figures, the research team said. “Acceptance within one’s peer

group creates opportunities for socialisation and a sense of belonging that acts as a buffer against the impact of harsh parenting,” said first author Danielle Roubinov, Assistant Professor at the University of California - San Francisco. For the study, published in the journal Development and Psychopathology, the team looked at 338 kindergarteners in six public schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. They found that 10 percent of the children met the criteria for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Among this group, 71 per

cent had been exposed to high levels of harsh parenting, versus 29 percent who had been raised with lower levels of harsh parenting. ODD is characterised by angry and irritable mood, argumentative and defiant behaviour, and spiteful or vindictive outbursts, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. In young children, the condition is linked with an elevated risk in adolescence and adulthood for anti-social behavior, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, criminal offences and incarceration, the team said.
