I THE PATH INDIA LEADS n his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Indian economy as the most preferred investment destination in the world and promised to bring inflation down to the targeted four per cent. Every major global agency has ranked India as the best investment destination as the country’s economy has continued to grow well despite the global gloom, Modi said in his August 15 address to the nation from the Red Fort here. “Be it the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank or the World Economic Forum, they have all declared India to be the best destination for global capital.” On inflation, Modi said, “The government is working with the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) to bring it in the range of four per cent, plus-minus two percentage points.” While the previous government had allowed inflation to cross the 10 per cent mark, his government has been able to push it back under six per cent despite two consecutive drought years, Modi said. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime that is being called the most radical reform in independent India’s indirect tax system will bring significant benefits to the economy, Modi said and thanked all political parties for supporting the legislation. “GST is also one such tax reform that will help us bring financial sta-

bility,” he said. “One nation, one grid and one price is what we have worked on.” Modi listed areas where he said India has made significant progress in the past couple of years, notably financial inclusion through Aadhaar, expanding energy services to the needy, and faster delivery of public services like the issuance of a passport. The task of financial inclusion
was impossible as many people were locked out of the mainstream institutions, he said. “But the impossible task was made possible by adding 21 crore people in the Jan Dhan Yojana,” he said. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana helps the poor to open bank accounts. Modi said the government was trying to link all government
schemes with Aadhaar to avoid leakage of benefits. “We have connected 70 crore Indians to Aadhaar and social security schemes,” he said in his address. Similarly, while it took six to eight months to get a passport, it just takes a couple of weeks now even though about two crore people apply for it annually compared with about 20,000 earlier, he said.

resident Pranab Mukherjee denounced “forces of divisiveness and intolerance” as well as attacks on weaker sections and said that they needed to be dealt with firmly. In his fifth Independence Day eve address to the nation, the President also attacked groups and individuals who he said pursued a divisive political agenda that leads to Constitutional subversion. Without making any specific reference to communal forces or the recent cow vigilantes, Mukherjee said that in the last four years he saw “with some disquiet forces of divi-

siveness and intolerance trying to raise their ugly head. “Attacks on weaker sections that militate against our national ethos
are aberrations that need to be dealt with firmly.” But, he said, “the collective wisdom of our society and polity gives me the confidence that such forces will remain marginalized”. India will celebrate its 70th Independence Day on Monday. The President pointed out that the Indian constitution was more than a political or legal document and rather an “emotional, cultural and social contract”. And he quoted former President S. Radhakrishnan as saying: “In an effective democracy, its members should be willing to accept law and lawful authority. No man, no group can be his or its own law giver.” Democracy, Mukherjee

underlined, was not just about elections. “Disruptions, obstructionism and unmindful pursuit of a divisive political agenda by groups and individuals lead to nothing but institutional travesty and constitutional subversion,” he said. “Polarizing debates only deepen the fault lines in public discourse.” Recalling that at the time of Independence, doubts were expressed if India will survive as a democracy, the President said that seven decades later, Indians with all their diversity had proved the critics wrong. Mukherjee denounced a rise in terrorism across the globe, with its roots in radicalization of people on the basis of religion.
thousand hearts beating with pride, thousands of feet tapping to patriotic tunes — the sea of humanity in front of Delhi’s historic Red Fort was throbbing with patriotic fervour as the nation celebrated its 70th Independence Day. The crowd erupted with a joyous roar and school children stood on their toes to catch a glimpse as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cavalcade arrived at the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort around half past seven amid a fanfare. Clad in a white half-sleeved kurta and skin tight pyjama, complimented with a pink-yellowmaroon turban, Modi looked dapper as he strode to inspect the guard of honor. He was received by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, junior Defence Minister Subhash Bhamre and Defence Secretary G. Mohan Kumar. On the road in front of the fort, paramilitary troopers stood in alert while agile National Security Guard commandos added to the vigil. Since no vehicles — except for those with stickers issued by Defence Ministry — were allowed in a two km periphery of the venue for security reasons, the public had to walk a considerable distance to reach the Red Fort. But that did not diminish their enthusiasm. The crowd once again erupted as soon as Modi appeared on the ramparts, though it was muted as compared to the thunderous applause one witnessed two years ago, when Modi delivered his maiden Independence Day speech. As the Prime Minister unfurled the national flag from the ramparts, overlooking the historic Jain Mandir and Gurudwara Sisganj in the front and the Mughal era Jama Masjid on the left, the booming sound of the ceremonial 21-gun salute filled the air. As Modi finished his speech, school children and National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets sang the national anthem.

Vanita Gupta leads drive against police brutality Head of the federal Civil Rights Division, Gupta said African American community ‘bore the brunt’ of brutality IANS, NEW YORK
A
n Indian-American official spearheading the Obama administration's campaign against police brutality and mistreatment of minorities has issued a scathing indictment of the city of Baltimore, accusing its police force of violating the Constitution and federal anti-discrimination laws. The head of the federal Civil Rights Division, Vanita Gupta, who oversaw an inquiry into police brutality and excesses in the city, said this week that its African American community "bore the brunt". Speaking at a news conference to release a Department of Justice report from the inquiry, she said her agency had entered into an agreement with Baltimore to reform the police. Gupta, who is also the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, is the most prominent of several Indian Americans working in

the civil liberties arena. The federal inquiry was launched after riots broke out in Baltimore last year during protests against the death of an African American man, Freddie Gray, while in police custody. All the six police officers charged in the case were either acquitted or had the charges withdrawn leading to outrage among African Americans and civil liberties activists.
The Baltimore incident came after the police shooting of an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Missouri, the previous year sparked massive riots and turned national attention to police killings of African Americans. Several such incidents gave an impetus to the nationwide Black Live Matter movement against alleged police atrocities on African Americans. While the US government routinely accuses other nations of human rights violations and brutality against minorities, the Baltimore report and Gupta's actions against several cities turn a rare government spotlight on what goes on within the US. Baltimore police, she said, engaged in a pattern of making unconstitutional stops, searches and arrests; using exccessive force; muzzling constitutionally-protected expressions, and using strategies that disproportionately targed African Americans.
Gurbaksh Chahal sentenced to jail SAN FRANCISCO: A San Francisco judge has sentenced former technology mogul Gurbaksh Chahal to one year in jail for violating his probation in a 2014 domestic violence case. Chahal, 34, who made a fortune in the advertisement technology business, has been charged with domestic violence for allegedly hitting his then girlfriend 117 times in 2014, newsweek.com reported on Saturday. He was accused of attacking another woman in the same year. Chahal was, at the time, already on probation after pleading guilty to
two misdemeanours of battery and domestic violence. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Tracie Brown has now ruled that there was enough evidence in the case to revoke Chahal's probation. Brown ordered him to turn over his passport as well as transfer the ownership of Gravity4 -- his ad tech company -- to his sister. Chahal gained fame when he sold his startup 'BlueLithium' for $300 million to Yahoo at age 25. Born in 1982 in Punjab, Chahal is the youngest of four children and moved to the US with his parents at age 3.
Indian-origin ‘celebrity’ surgeon sued LONDON: An Indian-origin "celebrity" surgeon who was working at a hospital in Britain has been sued by 57 male patients, after he allegedly left some of his patients infertile, the media reported. Urologist Arackal Manu Nair working at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital allegedly treated patients for prostate cancer when they did not have the disease, southportvisiter.co.uk reported on Thursday. One man claims he was left impotent when Nair "cooked" his prostate gland after zapping him with controversial laser treatment.
Others were apparently given a laser treatment known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HFIU) even though it has not been approved by the drugs watchdog National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). The General Medical Council (GMC) had placed a number of restrictions on the doctor's licence and he is unable to work unsupervised, or in a private practice, until July 2017, the report stated. The surgeon, who also worked at Spire Hospitals, resigned from the NHS Trust in July 2015.

Trump shakes up campaign team, names new CEO IANS, WASHINGTON
R
epublican Presidential nominee Donald Trump has overhauled his electoral campaign team, the media reported this week. Stephen Bannon, a senior executive at Breibart News, will be the CEO of the Republican campaign, while Kellyanne Conway, a former poll analyst and adviser, is set to become the new campaign manager, EFE news reported. Conway has experience with primary elections and is highly valued by Ivanka Trump, the candidate's daughter, but he has never worked as a campaign manager. Paul Manafort, current President of the Republican campaign, is set to remain in his post, though the team shake-up is believed to leave him with less responsibilities, reported the media. With the sudden overhaul, Trump intended to push his controversial campaign further and recover from the sudden drop in popularity over the past few months.
Donald Trump
The move came just two days after Manafort was accused by The New York Times of receiving almost $13 million from a pro-Russian Ukrainian party over the past six years. The same newspaper revealed that among the suspicious transactions was an $18 million deal to sell a cable television channel's assets to a committee set up by Manafort and Russian oligarch Oleg Depriska, a close ally to President Vladimir Putin.
‘Majority of US young adults reject Trump’ WASHINGTON: Despite US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's strategy of patching together a bipartisan coalition by appealing to the millions of young supporters of former Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, a new poll found that his populist play had so far failed among millennials. The latest USA Today/Rock the Vote poll released on Sunday found that while 56 per cent of voters under 35 say they would vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, one in five in this age group support Trump. In addition, Clinton trounced Trump among Sanders' supporters, with 72 per cent supporting the former secretary of state and 11 per cent backing Trump. The number of the Millennial generation, now 18-34, was estimated to be 75.4 million, according to US Census Bureau data released in April. While young voters tended to vote for Democrats in recent election cycles, the latest poll by USA Today and Rock the Vote showed that young adults may reject the Republican nominee.
Republican VP pick more favored than Democrats IANS, WASHINGTON
R
epublican Vice Presidential nominee Mike Pence has a more positive image than Democratic Party pick Tim Kaine, a latest poll showed. According to the Gallup poll released on Saturday, Pence is better known across the US as his image has grown significantly more positive over time than Kaine's. As of now, Republicans were embracing Pence more than the Democrats embraced Kaine, Xinhua news agency reported. Both Pence's favourable and unfavourable ratings have increased, while the percentage of those who have never heard of him has dropped from 65 per cent before last month's National Republican Convention to 39 per cent. His favorable rating has gone up more than his unfavourable rating,
Mike Pence
Gallup found. Pence, the Indiana governor received some nationwide media attention last year for signing a "religious freedom" law that the gay and lesbian community of that US state sharply criticised, and was facing a difficult gubernatorial reelection campaign before Trump chose him as running mate, Gallup found. Trump has grabbed many negative headlines since the conventions, including his pronouncements about the Muslim family whose Army captain son was killed in Iraq, the tensions between him and Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, and whether nuclear weapons can or should be used.

he first 1,000 MW unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) built with Russian equipment was dedicated to the nation this week, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying this marked the start of Indo-Russian collaboration in the nuclear energy field and that bigger atomic power units would be built. Speaking on the occasion, Modi said the successful completion of the first unit at Kudankulam is not just another fine example of the strength of the special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries. “It is also a celebration of our abiding friendship. In years ahead, we are determined to pursue an ambitious agenda of nuclear power generation. In our journey of cooperation, we plan to build a series of bigger nuclear power units,” Modi added. He said five more 1,000 MW units would be built at Kudankulam with Russian partnership. Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa jointly dedicated to the nation the first 1,000 MW unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP). The dedication happened via video conferencing with Modi in New Delhi, Putin in Moscow and Jayalalithaa in Chennai. PM holds all-party meet on Kashmir NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 12 attended an all-party meeting called to discuss a political solution in Kashmir. The opposition wanted the government to detail at the meeting a political road-map to resolve the crisis in Kashmir, where over 50 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces and more than 5000 are injured in the last month, media reported.
ment has been of wide spread technological advancement and growing economic prosperity. But, as we all know, it has not been without burden on our environment,”

Before both houses adjourned for the meeting, the Lok Sabha unanimously passed a resolution on Kashmir to restore the confidence of the people and the youth of the state. The Rajya Sabha had on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution on Kashmir after a day-long debate. The Valley has been under curfew since July 8 after the killing of Burhan Wani, a 22-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist.
Modi said. Modi said he has a vision for India achieving economic development respectful of Mother Earth. He said the Kudankulam
nuclear power plant is part of India’s plan to scale up its clean energy and also signals the commitment to build pathways of partnership for green growth. Modi said the success of the project demonstrates the common resolve to grow the Indo-Russian relationship in new dimensions. The Indian Prime Minister said the nuclear plant demonstrates the common resolve to keep the ties between India and Russia firm and steady. “Above all, it showcases your personal commitment, consistent support and strong leadership in transforming the substance and character of our relationship. The people of India associate naturally and with great ease with the people of your great country,” Modi told Putin.
BRIEFS BJP Dalit leaders to counter opposition NEW DELHI: The BJP has decided to aggressively counter the Opposition’s onslaught over the recent string of atrocities against Dalits in various parts of the country to restore its image among the community. A meeting of BJP’s Dalit union ministers, MPs and party’s office bearers of Scheduled Caste morchas at the Centre and states was held here on Tuesday at the Gujarat Bhawan to decide its strategy on the Dalit issue. The meeting was headed by BJP’s General Secretary (Organisation) Ramlal and SC morcha in charge Bhupendra Yadav. RSS leader Krishna Gopal was also supposed to attend the meeting but he gave a miss in the last minute, sources said. According to sources, all the Dalit leaders were asked to counter the Opposition’s onslaught over the issue aggressively. The leaders have also been asked to convey the message to the community about the vote bank politics of Opposition parties.
Ban on registering diesel vehicles lifted NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on August 12 said that all diesel vehicles with engine capacity of 2,000 cc or above can now be registered in the National Capital Region subject to depositing one percent of the ex-showroom price of the car with the Central Pollution Control Board. Modi protects Dalits, punishment for fake ‘gau rakshaks’ IANS, HYDERABAD
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi has called for protecting Dalits and for isolating and punishing fake “gau rakshaks” (cow protectors), saying they were destroying the country. On his maiden visit to Telangana, Modi sent out clear messages during his speeches at two different platforms. Making it clear that caste discrimination will not be allowed, he asked BJP workers to protect Dalits and asked states to act tough against fake cow vigilantes. Addressing a meeting of BJP’s booth-level workers of Telangana at L.B. Stadium here, he said that if the country has to progress,

peace, unity and harmony can’t be neglected. He also called for putting an end to politicising the caste issue and
alleged that some parties which considered Dalits as their vote bank and afraid of the initiatives taken by his government, were try-
ing to raise such issues by somehow influencing Dalits. “I want to tell all such people, if you want to attack, attack me, not my Dalit brothers. If you want to shoot, shoot me, not my Dalit brothers,” Modi said without naming any party. “Sometimes some incidents come to light which make heads hang in shame,” he said and described such incidents as sin against humanity. His remarks were in an obvious reference to the flogging of four Dalits by cow vigilantes in Gujarat’s Una town on July 11. “Is there any reason that we treat our Dalit brothers this way. What right we have to make these sections suffer when they are sufferings for centuries,” he asked.
Terming caste discrimination as a social problem, Modi said it was his request to all those who want a solution to give up politics of dividing the society. “This is a social problem. The more we politicize it, the more it gets complicated.” Earlier, in his speech at a public meeting at Gajwel in Medak district, Modi called for isolating and punishing fake “gau rakshaks, saying they were out to destroy the social fabric. Addressing the meeting after inaugurating the state’s drinking water programme “Mission Bhagiratha” and launching other projects, he said India is a county full of diversities, different values and traditions and protecting its “unity and integrity is our prime responsibility”.

Jaishankar accepts Pak’s invite Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar will go to Islamabad for talks with his Pakistani counterpart amid continuing unrest in Kashmir IANS, NEW DELHI
A
mid escalating bilateral tension over the unrest in Kashmir Valley, India said this week that Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar will go to Islamabad for talks with his Pakistani counterpart, but will focus on “aspects” related to cross-border terrorism. According to sources, while accepting the invite by Pakistani Foreign Secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, India has conveyed that it “rejects the self-serving allegations (of Pakistan) over Jammu and Kashmir in totality” and asserted that the
northern state is an integral part of India “where Pakistan has no locus standi”. “Since aspects related to cross-border terrorism are central to the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir, we have proposed that discussions between the Foreign Secretaries be focused on them,” the sources said. Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Gautam Bambawale was handed over an invitation addressed to Jaishankar to visit Pakistan “for talks on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute that has been the main bone of contention between India and Pakistan”. rime Minister Narendra Modi turned emotional as he paid tributes to godman Pramukh Swami of Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swami (BAPS) sect who died at age 95. Pramukh Swami enjoyed a massive following around the world. He passed away last weekend. Watched by thousands, Modi said that while people may have lost a guru, he had lost a father. Modi spent about an hour in Sarangpur after which he returned to Delhi. The place crawled with thousands of devotees who had reached there in hundreds of buses and other vehicles. Modi said Pramukh Swami fulfilled his guru Yogiji Maharaj's wishes by developing the Akshardham temple on the bank of the Yamuna in the Indian capital. Sharing his memories, the Prime Minister said that when the Akshardham temple in Delhi was to be inaugurated, Pramukh Swami insisted that he must join the consecration ceremony. Modi

‘Allow access to Kashmir’
UN Human Rights head has asked for ‘full and unhindered access’ to victims, witnesses and security forces on both sides of Kashmir ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS
U
N Human Rights head Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein on Wednesday expressed regret that his officials were not being allowed into the Kashmir Valley or into the part being governed by Pakistan, marking a departure from the world body’s hands off approach so far to recent developments there. Secretary General Ban Kimoon’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters here on Wednesday, “The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights today (Wednesday) expressed deep regret at the failure of Indian and Pakistani authorities to grant his office access to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, given recent allegations of serious

human rights violations.” In an attempt at even-handedness, both India and Pakistan were named in the statement. Haq said, “Since the latest outbreak of violence in early July, the High
Commissioner, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, has been engaging with both Indian and Pakistani authorities to seek access for a team to visit both areas to look into what he called allegations of the use of
excessive force, allegations of state sponsorship of violence, as well as the number of people killed.” Questions about UN reactions to the Kashmir development crops up frequently at briefings by Ban’s spokespersons, but they have avoided wading into the issue. As recently as Tuesday, Haq referred a questioner asking about the “deteriorating situation” in Kashmir to a July statement. That statement by Ban’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarri said the Secretary General reiterated his call “to both sides to exercise restraint” and that he was closely following the situation in Kashmir and “regrets the loss of lives” there. In the statement issued on Wednesday in Geneva, Zeid asked for “full and unhindered access” to victims, witnesses and security forces, and to relevant documentation on both sides of Kashmir.

She was asked about cooperation between India and the US on jet fighters and jet engines that was proposed during Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s visit to India in April and reports about the possibility of assembling Lockheed Martin’s F-16s and manufacturing Fairchild Republic Warthog-10s in India. “I am also aware of the prime minister’s push for Make in India
Hindu Marriage Bill tabled in Pakistan’s National Assembly ISLAMABAD: The much-debated Hindu Marriage Bill has been tabled in Pakistan’s National Assembly. Member of the National Assmbly (MNA) Ramesh Lal, one of the bill’s movers, said on Wednesday that it took around 10 months for a house panel to clear the bill and another six months for its report to be tabled in the house. “The delay was possibly because of extraordinary debates and discussion around the bill, but at least now the government should consider tabling it in the house in the next session,” Dawn online quoted Lal as
saying. The bill was approved by the standing committee on February 8, and has received support from the Hindu community and liberals. However, some of the more religious members of the Hindu community have expressed strong reservations regarding the bill’s contents including allowing separated individuals to remarry, and also states that a Hindu widow is entitled to remarry and shall have the right to do so, of her own will and consent, after a period of six months since the death of her husband.

Melbourne was one of three Australian cities ranked in the top 10, with Adelaide and Perth ranking fifth and seventh respectively.
82,000 evacuated as fire rages in US LOS ANGELES: At least 82,000 persons were forced to evacuate California’s San Bernardino county as wildfire broke out in the region, the media reported on Wednesday. Hot weather conditions, dry winds and heavy bushes quickly spread the flames which were sparked on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency quoted officials as saying. The wildfire dubbed as the “Bluecut” fire, spread from five acres to about 9,000 acres within hours.

A disappointed Messi had announced his international retirement after missing a penalty in the shootout defeat to Chile in the final of the Copa America Centenario in June. It was the third consecutive loss for Argentina in the final of a major tournament following defeats at the 2015 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup. The announcement led to an outcry in Argentina with fans from all over the world expressing their disappointment. Even the legendary Diego Maradona urged the

Following his 23 golds are Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, Finnish athlete Paavo Nurmi, US swimmer Mark Spitz and US athlete Carl Lewis — each with nine golds. Phelps also has more golds than 62 countries — including India, which has so far won nine golds in the modern Olympics and has 26 medals overall. This list of 62 does not include the 44 countries that have participated without winning any gold medals.
US dominate medal tally with 30 Gold RIO DE JANEIRO: After August 17 finals, the US tops the medals table on 30 gold, 32 silver and 31 bronze medals. Britain is second with 19 gold, 19 silver and 12 bronze medals, followed by China on 19 gold, 15 silver and 20 bronze medals. On August 17, China pocketed a gold medal each in table tennis and taekwondo. China defeated Japan 3-1 in the men's team final on Wednesday for a clean sweep of Olympic titles in table tennis competition for the third straight time, reports Xinhua. It was the 28th gold medal won by China in table tennis since the sport was introduced at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Japan was the biggest winner in wrestling, where they bagged all three women's titles. Eri Tosaka edged Mariya Stadnik of Azerbaijan 3-2 to win the women's freestyle 48kg gold. On back of the top performance in wrestling, Japan has lifted to sixth place on the medals table. At the Olympic Stadium, the US' Tianna Bartoletta won gold in the women's long jump with a personal best leap of 7.17 meters. It was Bartoletta's second Olympic gold medal. She was also a part of the US's victorious 4x100m relay team at the London 2012 Olympics. Jamaica's Elaine Thompson completed a memorable sprint double after storming to victory in the women's 200m final, beating the field with a season best run of 21.78 seconds. ndia’s fortunes took a sudden turn for the better in the last 24 hours with wrestler Sakshi Malik’s bronze as shuttler P.V. Sindhu assured the country of at least a silver medal after thrashing Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the women’s singles badminton semifinal at the Rio Olympics here this week. The only disappointment of the day was wrestler Babita Kumari losing 1-5 to Greece’s Maria Prevolaraki in the women’s Freestyle 53 kg 1/8 Final. All eyes were fixed on star shuttler Sindhu, who earlier defeated World No. 2 Wang Yihan to set up her semi-final clash with world No.6 Okuhara. World No. 10 Sindhu continued with her giant-killing spree as she made light work of the Japanese to register a 21-19, 21-10 triumph in the semi-finals and become the first Indian shuttler to enter the final of the Olympics. S
tar wrestler Sakshi Malik brought an end to India’s long wait for a medal at the ongoing Rio Olympics, clinching bronze in the Women’s Freestyle 58kg category even as the Indian challenge in other disciplines continue to falter. The 23-year-old from Rohtak overturned a 0-5 deficit in a hectic second round to script an 8-5 victory over Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan in the bronze medal bout at the Carioca Arena 2 here on August 18.It was a rousing display of fighting spirit and neversay-die attitude from the Indian. Aisuluu was clearly the superior wrestler in the totally one-sided opening round, displaying impressive strength and technique to take five points and open up a formidable lead. But Sakshi — who has previously shown a knack of staging strong
record against reigning All England Open champion Okuhara to 2-3. In the final, she will face twotime reigning world champion Carolina Marin of Spain, who beat defending champion Li Xuerui of China 21-14, 21-16. Irrespective of the colour of the medal in the final on Friday, it will be India’s second medal in the Rio Games after wrestler Sakshi bagged a bronze medal in the women’s 58kg category. Sindhu’s height and long reach
gave her a lot of advantage against the pint-sized Okuhara, who also had her right thigh strapped. Especially, Sindhu’s sharp crosscourt game and half smash helped her get off to a fine start as she took the first game 21-19. In the second game, Sindhu turned more aggressive and played a fearless game to stun the Japanese who looked short of ideas. The 21-year-old Hyderabadi kept earning points, hitting one smash after another to enjoy a comfortable ride. As many as 10 points on the trot catapulted her to the final with a 21-10 win in the second game. Afterwards, what followed was a screaming celebration from Sindhu and her camp. Earlier in the day, grappler Babita’s dreams of an Olympic medal shattered after losing to Greek Maria Prevolaraki in the women’s Freestyle 53 kg 1/8 Final. Babita struggled to find her feet in the first period after being pushed out of the safety zone and then the Greek wrestler took another two points to extend the lead further to 3-0.

Sakshi, who had also finished on the podium at the 2015 Asian Championships, created history by becoming the first Indian female
wrestler to clinch an Olympic medal. Kaori Icho of Japan won the gold medal in the category, while Russia’s Valeria Koblova — who had defeated Sakshi in the quarterfinals — took the silver. Eight-time African champion Marwa Amri of Tunisia took home the other bronze medal.
RIO DE JANEIRO: Narsingh Yadav’s dream of competing at the ongoing Rio Olympics has come to an end with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upholding the World Anti Doping Agency’s (WADA) appeal against the clean chit given to him in a doping violation case. The ad hoc division of the CAS, which met here on Thursday to hear the WADA’s appeal against the clearance to Narsingh by the
National Anti Doping Agency (NADA), also slapped a fouryear ban on the Mumbai wrestler. "WADA filed an urgent application before the CAS ad hoc division to challenge the decision of NADA India to exonerate Narsingh following two positive anti-doping tests with methandienone on June 25 and July 5.

n his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the Indian economy as the most preferred investment destination in the world and promised to bring inflation down to the targeted four per cent.

Similarly, while it took six to eight months to get a passport, it just takes a couple of weeks now even though about two crore people apply for it annually compared with about 20,000 earlier, he said.

are aberrations that need to be dealt with firmly.” But, he said, “the collective wisdom of our society and polity gives me the confidence that such forces will remain marginalized”. India will celebrate its 70th Independence Day on Monday. The President pointed out that the Indian constitution was more than a political or legal document and rather an “emotional, cultural and social contract”. And he quoted former President S. underlined, was not just about elections.
As Modi finished his speech, school children and National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets sang the national anthem.

arangpur, Gujarat, India Millions of tearful devotees gathered for the cremation rites of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, one of India’s most commonly known Hindu ascetics revered by millions around the world. The fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha departed his mortal body on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the age of 95. Over 2.1 million devotees from around the world dashed to the village of Sarangpur in Gujarat, India, to pay their last respects before his final rites were performed on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. The atmosphere was filled with comforting friends and strangers sharing memories with each other of their uplifting interactions with Pramukh Swami Maharaj, reminiscing upon the heartfelt connection that cemented his influence and wisdom in their lives. Many had traveled overnight from the United States to attend the cremation. “Pramukh Swami Maharaj welcomed all people in search of guidance, spirituality, and self-improvement. He had a heart in which the whole world could live. Those who love him are all different, but the divinity they saw in him is the same,” said Puja Patel, 22, from Columbus, Ohio. and personal development of others, establishing mandirs (Hindu temples) to preserve spirituality for current and future generations, as well as developing and overseeing schools, hospitals, and disaster relief services to provide infrastructure and support across communities of all sizes. Dr. Kashyap Patel, a cardiologist in Atlanta, Georgia, expressed his feelings following the passing, “I grew up building a bond with Pramukh Swami Maharaj. His travels from India would bring him to America, and he would take the time to get to know devotees in all corners of the world. He would reassure them in their faith, talk with them about their struggles, challenge them to improve their poor habits, listen to their seemingly insignificant worries – sharing the burden of life’s emotions with all who would lean on him. As he aged, his travels slowed, and face-to-face meetings with him grew fewer for all devotees. During this time it became clear that his role as a guide, as a Guru, was not limited to his physical presence, it continues in the hearts of all those who accepted him as their teacher and friend.” Once the official word was released from the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Sarangpur, Indian television networks began coverage of the memorials and tributes leading to the final rites rituals of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Heads of state from all over the country arrived to pay a final visit to the spiritual leader who has united communities in support of serving society. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, visited Sarangpur, Gujarat from Delhi and addressed saddened devotees before the funeral rites saying, “His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj was a stalwart among humans who embodied compassion and humility…Today you have lost a Guru, but I have lost a father.” Senators, congressmen, and governors offered their condolences. Congressman Ed Royce of California wrote, “He touched countless lives, providing hope and guidance during his tireless travel across India and around the world. As a spiritual leader, he will indeed be sorely missed, and my prayers are with the millions around the world who mourn his passing and celebrate his remarkable life.” British Prime Minister Teresa May, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, HRH Prince of Wales, and other heads of states also sent condolences and tributes. “His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj exemplified the values of British Hindus whose contribution helps make the United Kingdom one of the world’s most successful multi-cultural, multifaith democracies,” stated British Prime Minister Teresa May. Speaking of his life of service she added: “This legacy of selfless service will continue to benefit humanity for a long time to come.” Over 95 years, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life work and travels acquainted him with curious minds from around the globe. After news of his passing, many have extended their warm words on the loss of a beloved leader. Tributes are shared at http://pramukhswami.org/ tributes. Born as Shantilal Patel on December 7, 1921, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, was initiated as a swami (Hindu monk) on January 10, 1940 and received the name Narayanswarupdas Swami. On May 21, 1950 he was appointed as Head of the organization and came to be known as
Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Ever since he became a swami, he has counselled seekers from all walks of life through comforting discussions, compassionate letters, early hour phone calls, and visits throughout Gujarat – home to home, hut to hut – often made entirely by foot. The sheer amount of time given selflessly in working with people, listening to their pains and miseries to provide solutions rooted in unity and compromise, is the

reason the entire Hindu community is experiencing an unparalleled sadness upon his passing. Pramukh Swami Maharaj served individuals as a father, teacher, mentor, friend, advisor, and ally – he was a Guru who empowered people to live morally upright lives rooted in devotion that would transform their character, attitudes, and outcomes to provide greater happiness for both themselves

and their families. When the final rites were performed, thousands in Sarangpur were seated in prayer facing Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s funeral pyre, with hundreds of thousands watching through a live telecast streaming around the world. In accordance with Hindu final rites His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, carrying a bundle of straw set ablaze by a holy flame from the site of the Akshar Deri located in Gondal, Gujarat, began the final circumambulations around Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s mortal body. With each step, Vedic chantings could be heard resounding in the background. The circumambulations were continued by senior swamis, who have shared a religious life with Pramukh Swami for decades, each bowing their head with utmost love and respect as they paid their final respects to both a guru and friend. When the flame ignited Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s body, beginning at his toe, the audience was collectively stilled and quieted. The mood on the mandir grounds was solemn and awash with the profound devotion of pained people as they watched the light of the pyre grow stronger, recalling their Guru. Heartfelt tears soaked millions of faces for whom this day was unimaginable, the day of the physical departure of their beloved Guru who has guided them through life’s peaks and valleys. Chaitali Inamdar of Edison, New Jersey said, “Although I am deeply saddened by the news, I truly believe he will always be with us through his teachings. I lost a friend but even in that loss, I have gained insight and wisdom in the reassurance that his message thrives in how I choose to live my life.” Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s life and message of spirituality has left a lasting impression on the community of Hindus who will now work to carry his work and teachings forward under the guidance and leadership of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, Keshavjivandas Swami, sixth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and Guru of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. All individuals who wish to send their condolences and fond memories with His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj are encouraged to send their notes to tributes@in.baps.org, or share their stories on social media using the hashtag #pramukhswami.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- On August 12, Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed the Automatic Voter Registration Bill that had been endorsed by over 50 community organizations in Illinois, and passed the General Assembly with overwhelming, bi-partisan majorities. Speaking on behalf of the statewide coalition on August 15, Kathleen YangClayton of Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago expressed deep disappointment with Rauner’s decision to veto. “At any time, the Governor could have raised his concerns with SB 250, but instead he waited until the last minute and vetoed
C
a good bill,” Yang-Clayton said at a press conference hosted by Cook County Clerk David Orr. “Automatic Voter Registration increases access to the ballot box, which is a crucial step to a more engaged electorate.” Automatic Voter Registration would remove the language barrier that keeps many from taking that first step to participation; and it would automatically register approximately 60,000 new Asian Americans in Illinois. In a d d i t i o n , Au t o m a t i c Vo t e r Registration would simplify the voter registration process, increase election security by preventing fraud, and save the state
money in the long-run. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago and members of the Pan-Asian Voter Empowerment Coalition, which includes IndoAmerican Center, South Asian American Policy and Research Institute, and Muslim Women Resource Center, among others, endorsed Automatic Voter Registration this year, and worked with their legislators and community members to pass the Bill. County clerks across the state who administer elections, as well as the Illinois State Board of Elections endorsed Automatic Voter Registration as well. Ultimately, the bill passed with wide bi-partisan support: 50-7 in the Senate, and 86-30 in the House.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Few men are called to serve humanity the way Swami Swaroopananda does. Fewer actually achieve his unique impact and response. Swamiji is the Regional Head of Chinmaya Mission UK, Australia and Far East and is the Director of the prestigious Chinmaya Mission International Residential School (CIRS) in Coimbatore, India. Inspired by Swami Chinamayananda, Swami Swaroopananda left his family’s thriving business in Hong Kong at an early age to seek what he now calls, “real answers to real problems”. Since undergoing intensive monastic training and an exhaustive study of the Vedic scriptures at the Chinmaya Mission ashram in Mumbai as a direct disciple of Swami Tejomayananda (head of Chinmaya Mission worldwide), Swamiji has spent 25 years traversing the globe, sharing the wisdom of Vedanta with hundreds of thousands of people. Equally at ease in expounding ancient scripture in an ashram or conducting a management seminar at a large corporation, Swamiji’s practical and contemporary approach makes him a highly sought-after speaker and spiritual guide. Over the past 25 years, he has written dozens of books, spoken on spiritual texts such as the Hanuman Chalisa, Ik Onkar, Japji Sahib and Bhagavad-Gita and provided timeless spiritual guidance on contemporary issues such as harmony in relationships, fulfillment at work and maximizing one’s potential. Modi pays obeisance to Pramukh Swami BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -After presiding over the Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi on August 15, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, arrived in Sarangpur (Gujarat) at 11.55 am to pay homage to his ‘mentor’ HH Pramukh Swami Maharaj. With folded hands and a melancholy face, the PM bowed before the mortal body of Pramukh Swami and offered flowers in obeisance. He also met HH Mahant Swami Maharaj, the new spiritual head of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, and other senior swamis and expressed his condolences. Modi performed arti and circumambulations in homage to Pramukh Swami. Speaking on the occasion, he mourned the demise of Pramukh Swami as ‘many have lost a Guru and I, a father’. Taking pride in his long-standing association with Pramukh Swami, he said that Swamiji has nurtured and nourished him since the time when nobody knew him in public life. As a fatherly figure, Pramukh Swami would often point out to him his mistakes and moulded him. The Prime Minister applauded Pramukh Swami’s devotion and his unswerving commitment towards every word that his guru Yogiji Maharaj had uttered. He has set before us an example of how a true shishya should be. “Swamiji, he said, “has brought about a reformation not only in the Swaminarayan Sampradaya but among all sadhus. Though he is not physically with us now, but we all feel his presence through his life, teachings and
N
works.” Modi recalled an incident that occurred way back during the Shilanyas Vidhi of Swaminarayan Akshardham, New Delhi. Swamiji insisted that he be present in the holy ritual. Big names in the social and political spheres were in attendance to participate. He was a relatively unknown face at that time. While the puja was in progress, Pramukh Swami requested a
N
volunteer to provide him with some coins saying, “He must not be having any money to offer during the ritual. Pramukh Swami knew that my pockets were empty. Such was his oneness with me.” Reminiscing about another incident, the PM said, “Once when Pramukh Swamiji had stopped eating for some time and would not listen to anyone, I had requested him to eat on the phone like a son. An hour later when I enquired, I was greatly pleased to know that such a great sadhu had paid heed to my request and had eaten something.” The Prime Minister commended Pramukh Swami’s great life, morality and saintliness. He concluded his hour-long visit after paying his respects to Pramukh Swami Maharaj and seeking blessings from the new spiritual Head of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, HH Mahant Swami Maharaj, for the progress and prosperity of the nation.

Universities have come under criticism for muzzling free expression of views guaranteed by the constitution due to student protests. Earlier, amid protests from the Black Students Union and some activists, Smith
suspended her from her position as punishment for writing the post and ordered her to attend three cultural events each month, take part in mandatory diversity training and write a letter reflecting on her Facebook post. The action against her was taken despite Sethi apologizing for her post. Earlier this month, both sides announced the compromise lifting the suspension after she agreed to take leave from the position until the start of the next semester and expressed regret for her post. “I may have the right to post what I did, but I still should not have. My words at the time didn’t accurately convey my feeling and cause many students to lose their faith in me to advocate for them. I will always continue to learn and be ready to discuss these issues.” Sethi’s Facebook post was in support of the officers and in protest against their killing.

Officers at the police department have been dispatched to the Global Meat Market on North Merrimac Drive in Ben Hill County. The police found that the store clerk, 32-year-old Narendrakumar Patel, had been shot during an armed robbery and died at the scene. Student in hot water after FB comment BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- An Indian American leader of a student union is at the center of a ‘freedom of expression’ debate after the union took action against her for a Facebook comment in support of police personnel who had been shot dead by an anti-police activist. The vice president of the University of Houston students union, Rohini Sethi, had written: “Forget Black Lives Matter; more like All Lives Matter.” This came when five police officers were shot dead in Dallas, Texas, after a rally organized by the Black Lives movement to protest against police killings of African Americans in July. After criticism for what was seen as punishing her for expressing her views, union president Shane Smith backed down earlier this month in a compromise that also had her apologize.

material support to a terrorist organization. Young had faced up to 20 years in prison. Her parents pleaded for leniency at a recent hearing. Young, amid sobs, said she was ashamed of her actions. Her fiance, Muhammad Dakhlalla, pleaded guilty March 11 to a similar charge and is set to be sentenced on August 24. Prosecutors have said Young, who converted to Islam while studying at Mississippi State University, had prodded Dakhlalla into the plan.
Sikhs flay desecration of Guru Granth Sahib
US police & Mayor at the spot
BY A STAFF WRITER he Sikh community in the Union City of California staged a protest on last week after an unidentified man desecrated the holy Guru Granth Sahib in broad daylight. The incident happened on August 8 where an unidentified man tore Guru Granth Sahib and threw away its pages in front of some Sikh people who were sitting in Union City Park in California. Community leaders in the US and India condemned the act terming it as an attempt to disrupt the communal harmony and urged the authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators. Initially, the people didn’t have any idea about what the man was doing. When they realized that it was Guru Granth Sahib, they objected and tried to catch the man. But he managed to escape from the spot. The incident is the first of its kind in the US. City mayor Carol Dutra and senior police officials visited the place and assured strict punishment to the person behind the crime. Some community leaders think that the act was an attempt to disturb the harmony in the area. Satnam Singh Chahal, executive director, North American Punjabi Association, told “Union City has a large Sikh population. It seems the accused intentionally chose the park where members of the Sikh community came for a walk daily.” Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to take up the issue with the US government through the government of India and urged the US authorities to provide security to the Sikh community living there.

Man questioned in murder of Imam BY A STAFF WRITER OZONE PARK, NY -- A Brooklyn man is being questioned about the broaddaylight double shooting that left an imam and his assistant dead in what police are investigating as a possible hate crime, NYPD officials said. The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was taken into custody over a hit-and-run with a cyclist. The man was tracked down after he clipped the bicyclist shortly after the shooting, sources said. The cyclist took down the driver’s license plate number and investigators traced him using motor vehicle records. The man wasn’t immediately charged. Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and Thara Uddin, 64, were shot in the head Saturday as they returned home from a mosque about 1:50 p.m. near Liberty Avenue and 79th Street, the police said.

Congressman Darrell Issa, R-Calif.,
The H-1B program--used by many Indian firms--was created by Congress to help grow the economy by granting temporary visas to highly skilled individuals when employers could not find suitable employees in the American work force. According to the statement, employers over time began abusing the system and disproportionately hiring foreign workers, which led to a law change in 1998 with the requirement that the “highly-skilled” worker earn at least $60,000 annually and have earned

the equivalent of a master’s degree or higher. Because master’s degrees are often easily obtained by foreign workers and the $60,000 salary requirement was never indexed for inflation nor updated, it allowed companies to flood the H-1B lottery, the statement added. “To ensure these visas are available for those who need them, we need strong systems in place to prevent abuse and protect jobs for American workers,” said California Rep. Scott Peters, a Democrat. The Bill introduced by Reps. Issa and Peters eliminates the master’s degree exemption and raises the $60,000 threshold to $100,000, making it much harder for firms to bring in workers at a salary that could undercut American jobs. Issa’s Bill is the second H-1B proposal to be introduced in July in Congress. Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., previously proposed a bill which would require all employers to make a concerted effort to recruit U.S. workers, as well as prohibit companies from hiring H-1B employees if more than 50 people and more than 50 per cent of their employees hold H-1B and L-1 visas.

BY A STAFF WRITER HONIX, AZ -- Amanjeet Singh Toor was shot dead early on August 8 during the robbery at the store where he worked. The assailant then chased the other employees out of the store before returning to grab a bag. The police, along with Toor’s family, are seeking the public’s help to find the attacker. The shooter has been described wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, face mask and red gloves. Toor had immigrated from India six years ago, while his wife, Kamaldeep Kaur, had recently joined him in Phoenix from India, “This was a very hard loss for us. He was a role model for most of us,” Toor’s cousin Micky Gill said at Phoenix police headquarters. About 2,500-3,000 Sikh families live in the Phoenix metro area. The incident again raised concerns over the safety of Sikh-Americans who have been targeted, in the years since the 9/11 attacks, in a slew of hate crimes because of their articles of faith, the beard and turban. Rana Singh Sodhi, a Sikh and Indian American community activist, spoke on behalf of Toor’s family, calling for the community to come together to find the perpetrator. “He handed over the money, but was still shot. It begs the question [of racism],” Sodhi said in the report. “We are new immigrants in this area, but we request the community come out and help get this person behind bars,” he said. Sodhi’s brother was killed in a hate crime in Mesa just four days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack on the World Trade Center.

Bipartisan Bill to end abuse of H-1B visa BY A STAFF WRITER AN DIEGO, CA -- Congressman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., has announced a new, bipartisan legislation to stop the outsourcing of American jobs by companies abusing the H-1B visa program. The “Protect and Grow American Jobs Act” Bill, led by Issa, was introduced with support from the entire San Diego congressional delegation, industr y stakeholders and immigration policy leaders, including Congressman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, according to a statement released by Issa’s office. “First and foremost, this Bill is about protecting American jobs,” Issa said. “The high-skilled visa program is critical to ensuring American companies can attract and retain the world’s best talent. Unfortunately, in recent years, this important program has become abused and exploited as a loophole for companies to replace American workers with cheaper labor from overseas.” The congressman added that the Bill would help fix “one of the many problems” of the immigration system.

I’m enjoying life Social media trolls upsets as a non-smoker: family: Neil Nitin Mukesh Hrithik Roshan A
A
slew of actors are known for their smoking habits, but Hrithik Roshan kicked the butt a few years ago and is soaking in the joy of being a non-smoker. He says a cigarette is the worst evil manufactured and he could be a role model for those who want to quit. “I am a true believer in the fact that it (cigarette) is the worst evil manufactured and sold in this world. It should not exist. As far as anti-smoking disclaimers are concerned, I don’t know if that is the right way,” Hrithik told IANS here during the promotion of his latest film Mohenjo Daro. “I think it needs a role model who will speak on the joy of being a non-smoker. Perhaps, someone like me. I would love to become a symbol of...someone who struggled with giving up smoking and now is enjoying his life as a non-smoker. “That will go a longer way in changing people’s perspective and making them believe that smoking is not good,” added the actor. Set in the city of Mohenjo Daro, the nerve centre of the Indus Valley Civilisation (3,500-1,700 BC), Hrithik’s new film brings an epic adventure-romance story to the silver screen.
Jacqueline wants to try out something ‘daring’
A
ctress Jacqueline Fernandez says she wants to break the “girlnext-door image” soon, adding that she is venturing into “more daring” space with her next film. Jacqueline, who made her debut in 2009 with Aladin, is mostly seen playing the role of a girl-next-door on the silver screen. Asked when she plans to break
the girl-next-door image, Jacqueline told IANS: “Hopefully soon. There is a project...It’s too early to talk about it right now, but I am venturing into doing something little different and more daring.” The 31-year-old actress, who is currently riding high on the success of her latest release Dishoom, is gearing up for her upcoming film A Flying Jatt.
ctor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who has been a victim of social media trolls several times, says while the negative comments do not bother him, his family sometimes gets upset over them. Neil has been criticized on social media several times with users taking a dig at his acting skills, and making fun of his name.
People can’t imagine me in de-glam roles
A
ctress Esha Gupta, who is often seen in glamorous roles in films, says people can never expect her in de-glam roles because of her looks. “My look is such that people can never see me in de-glam roles and that’s fine because I don’t want to do de-glam. “If I do de-glam roles I would do it for a film like CityLights. That’s one of the films that I loved watching,” said the actress when asked if she will ever don a de-glam look in her films. Esha, who is currently seen in Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom, hails from a non-filmy background and she hopes her kids also turns out to be actors. Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, the movie also stars Ileana D’Cruz.
Does he get affected? “Not at all. It upsets my family at times...I am the one who is pacifying them and telling them not to get upset,” Neil told IANS. “I had this one man who was constantly abusing me on Twitter. Every single day he would abuse me. I would ignore it to a point, but one day the timeline had only abuses. I just responded and said ‘What’s the problem buddy?’ and he replied saying ‘I was just trying to get your attention. I am such a big fan of yours’. So, sometimes it’s them trying to gain attention,” he added.

Akshay lauds UP film policy
A Flying Jatt’s tribute to Bhagat Singh
Akshay, who recently gave superhit movie ‘Rustom’, said he was bowled over by state government’s help while shooting for his film Jolly LLB 2 IANS, LUCKNOW
B
ollywood actor Akshay Kumar has lauded the new film policy of the Uttar Pradesh government and said that more facilities to shoot films and the welcoming attitude of the state government was drawing filmmakers to the state. In the state capital to shoot Jolly LLB 2, which is being shot at the Chattar Manzil, Akshay told Film Bandhu officials that he was bowled over by the help and co-operation extended by the state government. Navneet Sehgal, Principal Secretary (Information), who is also the chairman of the Film Bandhu, told IANS that the state had prepared a new film policy on the directives of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and it has been a hit since the day it was rolled out. Jolly LLB 2 is sequel to an earlier film which starred Arshad Warsi and was set in western Uttar Pradesh. Other than Akshay, the film has Huma Qureshi in the lead role and Annu Kapoor. The film is being produced by
A movie poster of Rustom
Fox Star Studios Private Ltd and is being directed by Subhash Kapoor. After the shooting in Lucknow, it will later be shot in Varanasi. Recently, Akshay’s Rustom a crime thriller movie was released. He plays a picture-perfect Naval officer, highly decorated, principled, patriotic and is deeply in love with his wife. He comes ashore quicker
than expected and catches his wife cheating with his best friend. Since the husband is played by the remarkably evolved Akshay Kumar, we are mercifully spared the hysterical aftermath of an inherently melodramatic crime of passion that shook and stirred Mumbai’s beau monde in the year 1959.
That was the celebrated K.M. Nanavati case, known to change the way we look at the laws regarding crimes of passion. Rustom plucks the core of the crime, unplugs the theme of infidelity from its original context and plays deviously around with the facts to create a semi-fiction ‘whatif’ scenario where the characters hurl towards what the film’s writers would like to think of as an unexpectedly shocking ending. It’s like watching a true-life crime story from Shyam Benegal, done in Walt Disney studios. The passion and drama feels real, thanks to a solid sincere central performance. But the manner in which the story unfolds suggests that no harm can come to this world of fragile, blemished but unbreakable Utopia. Rustom is unmistakably a vehicle to showcase Akshay Kumar’s power to portray spiritual transparency during times of stressful betrayal and deception. He does so with a sincerity that is at times heartbreaking and at other times reassuring.
NEW DELHI: The star cast of the upcoming superhero film “A Flying Jatt” will pay tribute to freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Actors Tiger Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez and Hollywood talent Nathan Jones, apart from director Remo D’souza, will pay their tributes to Bhagat Singh on August 20, Sadbhavana Diwas, at the Yamuna Sports Complex here. The event, being organized by NGO Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal and Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh Foundation, will also have power-packed performances by singers like Guru Randhawa, Ashok Mastie and Simranjeet. “We are coming to pay tribute to Bhagat Singhji at the event. He is the biggest superhero of India,” Tiger said in a statement.
Being an actress, I can be ‘Mohenjo anybody: Priyanka Chopra Daro’: A MUMBAI: Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra says her favorite part about her profession is that it gives her the liberty to play myriad characters. Priyanka, who was at the Twitter headquarters in San Francisco on Tuesday, did a video chat with her fans who asked her several questions. When a user asked her about her favorite thing of being an actress, she replied in a video: “My most favorite thing of being an actress is being able to play so many different characters and the fact that I can be anybody. Scary huh?” Another user asked what’s the one thing she always needs on the sets. She said: “One thing I always need on set is my phone, otherwise how will I tweet you guys... That’s very essential.” The actress was also asked about her American drama TV series “Quantico”, which helped her gain international recognition.
feast for the senses
I
t isn’t easy to make a film about a civilisation that existed thousands of years ago. Not when historians are breathing down your neck, waiting to pounce on the filmmaker for every mistake in dress, manner and code. Well, in spite of the scepticism, look what Ashutosh Gowariker has done! “Mohenjo Daro” is a magnificent monument to the power of the imagination. Sure, you may have quibbles with the way some characters speak and dress — and leading lady Pooja Hedge is a problem — but nothing can take away from the imaginative powers that the filmmaker exercises over his material and resources. Much of this film is plainly fantasy, and the director has never pretended otherwise. The film’s biggest USP — and the quality that makes its lack of legitimate historicity tolerable — is its proclivity to stretch the limits of the imagination far beyond the prescribed levels of commercial
Film: “Mohenjo Daro”; Director: Ashutosh Gowariker; Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Kabir Bedi and Pooja Hegde; Rating: **** cinema. The climax showing a dam burst that wipes out an entire civilisation leaves a lasting impact in spite of some amateurish special effects. Gowariker keeps the canvas opulent but uncluttured. Unlike “Jodhaa Akbar” — his other remarkable collaborative effort with Hrithik Roshan — the director doesn’t film awe-inspiring battle scenes with horses and elephants and shots of massive crowds swooping down on the frames. Here, the frames are minimal, biblical in their austerity
and yet lavish and eyecatching. The city of Mohenjo Daro is constructed with an astonishing attention to detail. The structures are symmetrical, authentic and habitable. Apart from the debutante heroine’s florid sartorial flourishes, the characters are dressed in believable clothes. These details which go a long way in ensuring periodicity, could easily be missed by eyes that look only for faults and aberrations. Try letting go. Just float with Gowariker’s elemental emotions brought to life through vivid images framed by cinematographer C. K. Muraleedharan to represent a heightened level of sensuality in a world where innocence dominated and overruled self interest.
