In the penalty shootout, Australia prevailed thanks to the brilliance of goalkeeper Tyler Lovell, who blocked attempts from Harmanpreet Singh, Sardar Singh and Lalit Upadhyay. Aran Zalewski, Daniel Beale and Jeremy Edwards scored for Australia, who got their record 15th title, while Manpreet Singh tucked one past Lovell for India, who had lost to Australia in the 2016 final via the penalty shootout in London. During the 60 minutes of play, both Australia and India had plenty chances to score in a fast-paced match. ussian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump will hold a summit in Finland’s capital Helsinki on July 16, the Kremlin said on July 5. The two leaders are expected to discuss Russia-US relations as well as top international issues, according to the statement. On July 4, Putin held a closeddoor meeting with visiting US National Security Advisor John Bolton at the Kremlin and discussed details of the summit. The summit may last several hours with the two Presidents having a tete-a-tete in the middle of the day and then together with their delegations, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said following the talks between Putin and Bolton, TASS

news agency reported. “They could agree on a joint statement outlining further steps from both sides to improve bilateral relations and joint action in the international arena to ensure global stability and security,” he said.

Donald Trump tries to block China Mobile’s US entry BEIJING: The US administration has recommended that state-owned China Mobile, the world’s biggest cell phone carrier, be denied a licence to operate in the US, prompting Beijing to warn Washington to shun “Cold war mentality”. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, which is a part of the US Department of Commerce, cited national security risks in a statement sent on Monday to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), an independent agency that will take the final decision, with its

recommendations, Efe reported this week. “After significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks Donald Trump to US law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved,” said David Redl, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information at the US Department of Commerce. —IANS

Ushakov said Putin and Bolton discussed priority issues that the Presidents would address at the upcoming summit, in particular Syria and its humanitarian needs. On July 5, the White House also made a statement on the Trump-

WASHINGTON: US State Department said that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier on the day to discuss the future meeting of the two nation’s presidents. According to a statement issued by State Department’s spokesperson Heather Nauert, Pompeo and Lavrov discussed the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Xinhua reported. The two officials also discussed issues related to Syria and North Korea, read the statement. —IANS

Putin summit. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the two leaders would discuss bilateral ties and a range of national security issues. Trump’s summit with Putin is likely to draw criticism from the US President’s domestic critics, who accuse him of currying favor with the Russian leader, and jitter US allies, who fear Trump will take a less hawkish position with Russia on issues like the annexation of Crimea and military exercises near the Russian border in eastern Europe. The summit will take place four days after a NATO meeting in Brussels, where Trump will meet leaders of US military allies. NATO members were worried that if the summit with Putin had taken place earlier, Trump might have agreed to something with the Russian leader that they would have been forced to go along with, said a CNN report.

DNA tests for migrants at US border IANS, WASHINGTON

D

NA tests are being conducted as part of the process to reunite children who were separated from their immigrant parents at the US border, a top official has said. “The safety and security is paramount and that it is not uncommon for children to be trafficked or smuggled by those claiming to be parents. To our knowledge this is a cheek swab and is being done to expedite parental verification and ensuring reunification with verified parents due to child welfare concerns,” the official told CNN this week. However, the official refused to

give details about if the testing requires consent and or if the DNA is stored in a database. Jennifer K. Falcon, communications director for RAICES, a nonprofit in Texas that offers free and low-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees, called the move deplorable because collecting such sensitive data would allow the

government to conduct surveillance on the children “for the rest of their lives”. “This is a further demonstration of administration’s incompetence and admission of guilt, this further drives home the point we’ve been saying. They never registered parents and children properly,” she told CNN. Falcon also said it’s not possible the migrant children — some as young as two months old — are giving their consent to DNA testing. Attorneys representing migrant families told CNN some of their clients have been approached by individuals who identified themselves as health officials or were wearing military-style clothing.

Trump reverses Obama-era affirmative action in schools and the court’s written decisions are the best guide for navigating this complex issue.

IANS, WASHINGTON

U

S President Donald Trump’s administration has rescinded seven Obama-era policy guidelines that called on universities to consider race as a factor in diversifying their campuses. In a joint letter, the Education and Justice Departments said on Tuesday that the guidelines “advocate policy preferences and positions beyond the requirements of the Constitution”, reports The New York Times. “The executive branch cannot circumvent Congress or the courts by creating guidance that goes beyond the law and, in some

instances, stays on the books for decades,” said Devin M. O’Malley, a Justice Department spokesman. Education Secretary Betsy

DeVos wrote in a separate statement: “The Supreme Court has determined what affirmative action policies are constitutional,

“Schools should continue to offer equal opportunities for all students while abiding by the law.” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the guidelines, published by former President Barack Obama’s administration between 2009 and 2016, were “unnecessary, outdated, inconsistent with existing law, or

otherwise improper”, reports Efe news. He said his decision was based on an executive order that Trump signed in February 2017 and which required the creation of committees within government agencies to identify, revoke or modify regulations they considered unnecessary. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of affirmative action in 2016, but it has been a controversial issue in the United States for decades. The Trump administration’s move comes a few months before a court is expected to rule in October on a highly anticipated case which is pitting the Harvard University against Asian-American students.

SC breather for Delhi government

Real authority to take decisions lie in the elected government, says the court, overturning a Delhi High Court verdict which declared the Lt Governor as the head of the Delhi administration

Delhi being UT, its powers subservient to Centre: Jaitley

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal (L), who has been leading the campaign seeking more powers for his government, hailed the court verdict and sought a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal (R) for implementing the ruling. IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously ruled that Delhi’s Lt Governor was constitutionally bound by the “aid and advice” of the elected government — a decision hailed by the ruling AAP as historic and which ends a bitter power tussle over the capital’s administrative control and governance. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said the real powers of governance in Delhi rested with its elected representatives and their opinion

BRIEFS Tharoor granted anticipatory bail NEW DELHI: A court here on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in a case related to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Additional Sessions Judge Arvind Kumar allowed his anticipatory bail plea asking him to furnish a personal and surety bond of Rs 1 lakh. The court has directed Tharoor not to tamper with evidence and nor try to influence the witnesses. The court has also asked him not to leave the country without permission.

Modi hails decision on MSP as ‘historic’ NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed the Union Cabinet’s decision to give Minimum Support Price (MSP) of 1.5 times on the input cost to farmers as “historic”. He also asserted that his government will continue to take steps for the welfare of the farming community. —IANS

and decisions ought to be respected. The ruling overturned an earlier Delhi High Court verdict which had declared the Lt Governor as the head of the Delhi administration, triggering an ugly war between the Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party. The court said the Lt. Governor, appointed by the central government, was bound by the aid and advice of the Ministers of the city government in all areas except land, police and public order or where he refers the matter to the President citing difference of opinion. “Real authority to take decisions lie in the elected government. This is the meaning of ‘aid and advice’.

Titular head has to act in accordance with aid and advice,” Justice D.Y. Chandrachud observed. Chief Justice Misra, also speaking for Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, wrote that the Lt. Governor was not vested with any independent decision-making powers and cannot act in a “mechanical manner without due application of mind” in referring decisions of the government citing differences. Every “trivial difference of opinion” between the Lt Governor and the city government, he said, could not be referred to President for a decision.

NEW DELHI: Rejecting claims by AAP and other opposition parties on the powers of the Delhi government vis a vis the Lt Governor, Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that the Supreme Court judgement emphasizes the importance of the elected state government but Delhi being a Union Territory makes its powers subservient to the Central government. In a Facebook post, he also said the apex court has held categorically that Delhi cannot compare itself on par with other states and, therefore, any presumption that the administrative control of the UT cadre of services has been decided in favor of Delhi government would be wholly

“In this context, even in case of differences of opinion, the Lt Governor and the NCT government should act with constitutional morality and trust for each other.” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been leading the campaign seeking more powers for his government, hailed the court verdict as “a big victory for the people of Delhi,

erroneous. Jaitley said the judgement elaborates at length the constitutional philosophy behind the Constitution and reaffirms precisely the text of what the Constitution says. “It does not add to the powers of the state government or the central government nor does it in any way dilute the same. It emphasizes the importance of elected state government but Delhi being a Union Territory makes its powers subservient to the central government,” he said. “The Council of Ministers being headed by the Chief Minister should be guided by values and prudence accepting the constitutional position that the NCT of Delhi is not a State,” he said.

a big victory for democracy”. His deputy Manish Sisodia called the ruling a “landmark judgement” that has ensured that the Delhi government “will not have to send their files to Lt Governor for approval. “Now work will not be stalled. Powers are restored back to Delhi. This verdict stands against the whimsicality of the LG.”

Terror groups operating in Kashmir: UN report ARUL LOUIS, UNITED NATIONS

T

errorist groups are operating in Kashmir and Naxalites are recruiting children, according to a report by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who urged the Indian government to act against those recruiting children. Guterres’ Children in Armed Conflict report covering 2017 identified Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen as the groups using children in their armed campaign in Kashmir. It said: “The United Nations continued to receive reports of the recruitment and use of children, including by the Naxalites, particularly in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Naxalites reportedly resorted to the use of a lottery system to conscript children in Jharkhand.” It added: “In addition, three incidents of the recruitment and use of children were reported in Jammu and Kashmir in the context of clashes with national security forces. One case was attributed to Jaish-eMohammed and two to Hizbul Mujahideen.” However, the report presented by

Soldiers during an encounter with militants in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on June 29 (Photo: IANS)

Guterres this week to the General Assembly also mentioned “unverified reports” that indicate national security forces use children as “informants and spies”. Guterres said he would “encourage the government to put in place measures to hold perpetrators of child recruitment and use to account and engage with the United Nations in view of ending and preventing violations against children”.

Overall in India, the report said, “Children continued to be affected by incidents of violence between armed groups and the government, particularly in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and during tensions in Jammu and Kashmir.” “Children continued to be killed and injured in the context of operations of national security forces against armed groups,” the report said.

It said that according to government data, 188 civilians were killed in Naxalite-affected regions but a break up of how many of them were children was not available. In Kashmir, the report cited one case, that of a 15-year-old boy “killed by national security forces” during a clash with alleged Lashkare-Taiba elements in Padgampora village in Pulwama district. Children were also affected in other ways by conflicts like the closure of schools because of actions both by Naxalites and by security forces, Guterres’s report said. “In Jharkhand, suspected Naxalites elements attacked one school in Khunti district,” the report said. Because of increased tensions in Kashmir, 65 schools in Rajouri district and 76 in Poonch were closed for varying periods, it added. Guterres said he welcomed India signing the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention in June 2017. The convention adopted by the International Labor Organization in 1999, prohibits bonded labor of children and their trafficking, sexual exploitation and recruitment for armed conflict.

K’taka govt must remain safe If the JD(S)-Congress coalition fails to survive at least till the next general election, hopes of the non-BJP parties coming together against the BJP will evaporate AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

E

ven as various formulas are being worked out by the opposition at the national level for taking on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019, including forming alliances which may not be the same in every state, the first test as to whether such khichdi or hodgepodge groups can be politically effective will be the lifespan of the Janata Dal (Secular)-Congress government in Karnataka. If it fails to survive at least till the next general election, then all the hopes of the non-BJP parties coming together against the BJP will evaporate. It is unfortunate for those planning a confrontation with the BJP that the current signs about the longevity of the H.D. Kumaraswamy government in Karnataka are not very reassuring. Having been uncharacteristically magnanimous about letting Kumaraswamy of the JD-S become the Chief Minister although he is the junior partner in the coalition, the Congress appears unable to accept the reality of its No. 2 position despite winning 78 seats in the 224-member assembly. Hence, the current differences between the two parties over the presentation of a full budget,

Karnataka Chief Minister and JD-S leader HD Kumaraswamy (right) with Congress leader and Co-ordination Committee Chairman Siddaramaiah during a joint press conference in Bengaluru earlier last month. (Photo: IANS)

which is what the Chief Minister wants, apparently to leave his personal stamp on the fiscal policy. The Congress, however, objects to it since the former Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, had presented the state’s budget earlier and evidently doesn’t want his plans to be summarily brushed aside. It is also no secret that relations between the present and former chief ministers have not been cordial ever since Siddaramaiah crossed

over from the JD-S to the Congress on realizing that Kumaraswamy was the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s choice as his successor in the party. Since there have been tussles between the two parties over ministerial berths as well, it is not surprising that Bengaluru was rife not long ago with rumors about the BJP toppling the Kumaraswamy government. It goes without saying that any impression about the instability

of the ruling alliance will enable the BJP to mock the national opposition’s efforts to combine against it. Ever since the Janata Party’s collapse in the late 1970s, the idea has gained ground about the inherent fragility of coalitions at the national level although they have been quite successful in states like Kerala and earlier in West Bengal. In New Delhi, though, neither the Janata Party of Morarji Desai, Charan Singh and Jagjivan Ram of 1977,

Father-daughter bring technological difference to this Arunachal village

nor the Janata Dal of V.P. Singh, Devi Lal and Chandrashekhar of 1989, could last for long. The machinations of the Congress were one reason for the short lifespan of these combines. It was the same in the 1990s when the Congress brought down the H.D. Deve Gowda government at the Centre and paved the way after I.K. Gujral’s brief interregnum for the BJP to come to power. Perhaps, the time has come for the Congress to show that it has got over its self-perception of being the natural party of governance in Lutyens Delhi and let others also have their days in the sun. Whether or not such a change in the party’s outlook has taken place will become clear by its role in Karnataka. It is a test of leadership not only for the Congress as an organization, but also for Rahul Gandhi, who has to show that he is not like his grandmother, Indira, or uncle, Sanjay, who conspired to seal the Janata Party’s fate in 1979, or like his father, Rajiv, who pulled the rug from under V.P. Singh’s feet with Chandrashekhar’s help in 1990. Since he aspires to be the Prime Minister if the Congress wins a sizeable number of seats, he has first to show his capability of controlling his notoriously fractious party and then of accommodating his allies. Mike Libecki (left) with his daughter Lilliana in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh (Photo: IANS)

In many remote areas, Mike Libecki and his daughter are imparting computer education to kids and teachers SAKET SUMAN, TAWANG (ARUNACHAL PRADESH)

N

ational Geographic explorer Mike Libecki and his 14-year-old daughter Lilliana are essentially travelers who have been to several remote corners of the world. But it is not just the high-ranging mountains or farflung seas that have a distinct pull for the American father-daughter duo; in fact, most of their travels are humanitarian - and - philanthropybased expeditions. In their latest venture, they collaborated with Dell as a part of its Give Back Project and worked in a remote village of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. At Jhamtse Gatsal’s Children’s Community, which is home to about 90 children, the father-daughter duo,

along with Dell employees, have installed 20 new laptops, new printers, internet access and are imparting computer education to kids and teachers in Tawang. They have also installed new solar power panels and solar generators for the computer centre and other buildings in the community. “We worked closely with the community. All of the kids at the community are orphans or they have come to live there because they have family issues. They are all first-generation learners, none of the families of these kids have had an education. “We came here to provide solar energy, a new computer lab with computers and internet installed, because the goal of the orphanage is to provide education to the kids. They want the children to go to

college; but without having computers and internet, they will lag behind. In the times that we live in, we need to be technologically advanced and savvy to make progress,” Mike told IANS. Maintaining that progress is not possible without access to technological tools such as computers and the internet, Mike explained that all the equipment was shipped from the United States to Tawang and Dell employees were on ground to help in the installation process. “But just installing the computers wasn’t enough. We needed to ensure that the children are able to use them… that they are trained properly and, whenever the situation arises, they should have help from technicians. We also had to ensure that these systems run on

solar power because remote areas like these do not have electricity running most of the times,” he said. So, when they set out on what turned out to be a very enriching and satisfying experience, there was a lot of anticipation in the air as many of the kids at Jhamtse Gatsal’s Children’s Community were seeing computers for the first time. When the young children saw

Lilliana, who, at the age of 14, has already been to 26 countries, all seven continents, five major expeditions and has climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, helping her father set up the computers and teach not just the kids, but also the teachers and other workers at the community on how to go about using the computer and accessing the internet, their faces lit up with brightness and, in Mike’s words, “They learnt to aspire.” “Everytime we connect with a community, we get more than we give. We have opportunities that they don’t possess,” he said.

Lopez Obrador called it a “historic day” after the National Electoral Institute (INE) attributed him at least 53 per cent of the votes in a quick count of a sample of 7,700 ballots, Efe news reported. His closest rivals admitted defeat and congratulated Lopez Obrador on his victory. “I express my respect to those who voted for other candidates and parties, and also for the three presidential candidates representing the different organizations that have recognized our triumph and victory today,” Lopez Obrador told a crowd of jubilant supporters at an event in

Mexico City late Sunday. “I call all Mexicans for reconciliation and to put best interests above personal interests, however legitimate,” said Lopez Obrador, who is set to assume office on December 1. The silver-haired 64-year-old left-wing nationalist promised pro-

found changes in the country during his mandate and assured he would work to establish an “authentic democracy”. He vowed to crackdown on corruption through fiscal and financial discipline, and promised intellectual and business freedom.

Lopez Obrador also said he would seek “friendship and co-operation” with the US. Mexico’s relations with Washington have been strained since the election of President Donald Trump who has strongly criticized the country over trade and migration. However, Trump took to Twitter to congratulate Lopez Obrador “on becoming the next President of Mexico”. Lopez Obrador’s nearest rival, Ricardo Anaya of the conservative National Action Party, was placed second with 22 per cent of the vote, followed by Jose Antonio Meade of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party with around 16 per cent of the vote, and the independent Jaime Rodriguez with 5.5 per cent. The opposition had admitted defeat after the exit polls had indicated landslide victory for Lopez Obrador shortly after voting ended.

Egypt jails 21 Brotherhood loyalists CAIRO An Egyptian court on Thursday sentenced 21 loyalists of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood group from 10 to 25 years in prison over forming a terrorist cell targeting policemen, soldiers and judges. Cairo Criminal Court sentenced 14 defendants to 25 years in jail, six to 15 years and one to 10 years, according to Efe news. Eight of the 14 defendants sentenced to 25 years were fugitives while the other 13 had been tried in custody. Among the defendants in custody was Abdullah Shehata, the economic adviser of former Brotherhood-oriented President Mohamed Morsi who was ousted by the Army in July 2013 in response to mass protests against his one-year rule. The court said the defendants were convicted of possessing machine guns, ammunition and explosives used to carry out their terrorist activities and harm social peace and national unity. Most Brotherhood leaders, members and supporters, including Morsi himself and the group’s top chief Mohamed Badie, are currently jailed.

As soon as they recover their strength, the children will begin to learn how to scuba dive to get out of the cave in which they have been trapped since June 23. “There is no rush,” said Patisen, adding that the children and their coach will leave when they are ready and it is safe for them to dive along narrow flooded caves towards the exit located about 3 km away. He was one of four judges interviewed for the position on the nation’s highest court by Trump on July 2, according to The Washington Post and other media outlets that quoted unnamed sources who had been briefed about the meetings. Trump’s Spokesperson Sarah Sanders confirmed that he met for 45 minutes with four candidates, but would not identify them. Trump has said he would announce his pick by July 9. Thapar was appointed by Trump last year to the federal Sixth Circuit Appeals Court based in Cincinnati, Ohio, that covers four

person has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill the children of Ajit Pai, the head of the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), according to a court document. The person identified as Markara Man made the threat in

emails sent to Pai, one of the senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, because he was angry that the FCC had repealed net neutrality, the affidavit filed in connection with the case by a law enforcement in a Virginia court said. The arrest was disclosed last week in a press release from the Department of Justice that only said that

Judge Sri Srinivasan was among the top choices considered by then President Barack Obama for the Supreme Court in 2016. Obama ultimately picked Merrick Garland but McConnell blocked the nomination refusing to take it up for Senate’s consideration citing the presidential election coming up later that year. Maxine Waters, a leading Democratic Party member of Congress, issued a call to her supporters to harass officials of the Trump administration and later warned in a TV interview, “The people are going to turn on them.” Man’s threat was, however, made in December last year, before the instigation by Waters. Some Democratic Party leaders like Senator Chuck Scheumer have distanced themselves from Waters. In June last year a Democratic Party supporter shot and wounded Republican Party Whip Steve Scalise and was himself killed by police before he could harm other Republican legislators at a preparation for a charity baseball game.

K’taka to release water to TN As per Central Water Commission’s order, tentative monthly deliveries during a normal year indicate 34 tmcft water to be released to Tamil Nadu in July IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Cauvery Water Management Authority, which held its first meeting this week amidst reports of Karntaka planning to appeal in the Supreme Court against its formation, directed Karnataka to release about 31 tmcft water to Tamil Nadu in July. “The quantum of water which has been in the tribunal award after adjusting whatever has been the surplus in the month of June that would be released by Karnataka,” Central Water Commission (CWC) and CWMA Chairman S. Masood Husain told reporters after the meeting. As per the tribunal’s order, the tentative monthly deliveries during a normal year indicate 34 tmcft water to be released to Tamil Nadu in July. that the excess water received by Tamil Nadu in June due to good monsoon was excess by more than three tmcft. Husain said the first meeting of the authority was held in a “cordial atmosphere” and it marked a historic moment after a long period

of litigation. The meeting was attended by all four party states — Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. In the nine-member CWMA chaired by CWC Chairman, Karnataka is represented by its Principal Secretary, Water Resources,

Rakesh Singh and Tamil Nadu government by Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, S.K. Prabakar. Kerala Water Resources Secretary Tinku Biswal and Puducherry Development Commissioner-cum-PWD Secretary A. Anbarasu were also present. On whether Karnataka will follow the CWMA’s direction, Husain said he is hopeful that all party states will cooperate in the implementation of the tribunal award. Going by the deliberation at the meeting this week, he said he is fully confident about the award’s implementation. “This is the decision of the authority and as the monsoon has been normal, we hope that the reservoirs in Karnataka would be receiving the normal inflow and the state (Karnataka) would be able to release this amount. I do not see any lack of cooperation from any side,” he said.

No relief from Kerala HC to rape-accused priests IANS, KOCHI

T

he Kerala High Court this week declined any relief to two of the four rapeaccused Orthodox priests who had moved it for anticipatory bail, posting the next hearing. The two priests, Abraham Varghese and Job Mathew, of the Kottayam-headquartered Malankara Orthodox Church, sought that the court prevent their arrest as they have been falsely

implicated in the case of sexually exploiting a woman parishioner. However, the prosecution took a very strong stand that, under no circumstances, should anticipatory bail be given. Counsel for the two priests raised the request that the arrest should be prevented till the court takes up the bail plea, but the court did not take it up. Along with the two who approached the court, two other priests — Jayce George and John-

IN BRIEF Kumaraswamy waives farm loans BENGALURU: The Karnataka government has waived farm loans up to Rs 340 billion giving relief to lakhs of farmers across Kumaraswamy the state. “I propose to waive farm loans up to Rs 340 billion, with Rs 200 thousand per farmer family,” Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said in the Assembly while presenting his maiden state budget for fiscal 2018-19. The budget proposes to tax the people heavily by increasing the petrol fare by Rs 1.14 per liter and diesel by Rs 1.12 per liter. “I also propose to increase excise duty on Indian made foreign liquor by four percent to raise additional revenue for meeting the budget expenditure,” Kumaraswamy, who heads coalition government of Janata Dal-Secular and Congress, said.

New Congress Chief for Karnataka BENGALURU: Congress President Rahul Gandhi this week appointed Bengaluru MLA Dinesh Gundu Rao as President of the party’s KarDinesh Rao nataka unit. Congress General Secretary Ashok Gehlot announced the appointment of Gundu Rao as well as Bidar legislator Eshwar Khandre as the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee’s Working President — a post earlier held by Rao. “The party appreciates the hard work by outgoing KPCC President G. Dileep row: Actor-MLA Ganesh Kumar slams politicians, actresses IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

A

n audio clip of actor-turnedMLA K.B. Ganesh Kumar criticizing the role of politicians and four actresses who resigned from the artistes body AMMA, surfaced earlier this week. The Pathanapuram MLA can be heard calling the politicians “limelight hoggers” and the four actresses “perennial trouble-makers”. Kumar was in conversation with Association of Malayalam Movie Artists general secretary Edavela Babu. In the clip, Kumar advises Babu to “just keep silent” as the outburst over the revoking of Dileep’s suspension in AMMA will die down in two days. “These four actresses have never

been active in AMMA, nor in the field of acting. They never participated in the AMMA shows and are perennial trouble makers.

“With regards to politicians, they are interested to give sound bites to TV channels just to stay afloat in public domain.

“You just keep quiet and need not respond. The media is out to create ruckus and the only thing they have is negativity in their news. “What should be noted is AMMA is not a political body, but formed to look after our welfare and hence the public also need not be unduly concerned,” says Kumar. Leading actresses from the Malayalam film industry — Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambisan, Geetu Mohandas had resigned later, along with the victim of the February 2017 kidnapping case in which Dileep was alleged to have been involved that landed him in jail for 85 days. The audio clip has come a day after the CPI-M decided not to

seek an explanation from Ganesh Kumar for his stand in the ongoing reinstatement row of accused actor Dileep’s membership in the AMMA. Of late, the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist’s Kerala Secretariat gave a clean chit MPs Innocent and Mukesh and Kumar by deciding not to seek any explanation from them on this issue. Dileep was suspended from AMMA last year but on June 24, at the annual general body meeting of the body, the new set of office bearers led by superstar Mohanlal revoked his suspension. Since then there has been a huge outcry from several quarters against this decision and it’s at this time Kumar’s audio clip surfaced.

Hosts Russia stunned pre-tournament favorites Spain 4-3 (1-1) via penalty shootouts and entered the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2018. Russia’s Sergei Ignashevich’s own goal in the 12th minute opened Spain’s account before Artem Dzyuba struck in the 41st minute to equalize.

Hockey: India lose to Australia in Champions Trophy BREDA (THE NETHERLANDS): India suffered a penalty shootout heartbreak in the Hockey Champions Trophy final for the second consecutive time as they lost 1-3 (1-1) to defending champions Australia last week. Blake Govers put Australia ahead in the 24th minute. India equalized through Vivek Sagar Prasad’s strike in the 43rd minute to end 1-1 at the regulation 60 minutes of play. The loss for Portugal against Uruguay ended the dream of legendary Cristiano Ronaldo, who alongside Argentina’s Lionel Messi, may have to end a stellar international career without the biggest trophy in football. Rahul started the onslaught right from the word go before meting out some special treatment to off-spinner Moeen Ali, whom he welcomed with a superb reverse sweep that yielded a boundary and followed up with a massive six over long on. The right-hander then picked the leg-spinner Adil Rashid for a boundary to third man to get to his half century off just 27 balls, before launching Liam Plunkett for two sixes and as many fours to milk 20 runs from the paceman. Rohit too stepped up the gas by launching Rashid for a towering six over mid wicket before falling to the same bowler.

kipper Ajay Thakurs brilliance helped India hammer Iran 44-26 in the final match to lift the Kabaddi Masters trophy on June 30. Iran, who impressed with their performance in this six-nation meet, were expected to give some fight to the mighty Indian team but they failed to do so. Right from the beginning, their defenders and raiders struggled in a match which was delayed for couple of minutes in the first half as the lights went out. minutes, India started off perfectly. Raiders and defenders did their job from the start and helped their team to gain four points lead in first four minutes of the game.

Skipper Ajay Thakur, Monu Goyat, Rishank kept on stealing the points as a result India forced Iran to play with only two players. Soon India inflicted an all out in

the seventh minute of the game to make it 10-2. Iran, tried to reduce the point difference towards the end of the first half but failed and both teams finished the first half proceedings with India leading 1811. The second half saw India making second all-out of the match in just four minutes to make scoreboard count 24-12. India’s dominance continued as defenders Surjeet, Girish were thrashing the Iran raiders and grabbing them at will. India again forced Iran to play with two players when Ajay made a superb raid in the 28th minute but Iran revived their players soon started counter-attacking.

serious note of these irresponsible messages and their circulation in such platforms. “Deep disapproval of such developments has been conveyed to the senior management of the WhatsApp and they have been advised that necessary remedial measures should be taken to prevent proliferation of these fake and at times motivated/sensational messages,” the statement said. The government has also directed that spread of such messages should be immediately contained through the application of appropriate technology. It has also been pointed out that “such platform cannot evade accountability and responsibility specially when good technological inventions are abused by some miscreants who resort to provocative messages which lead to spread of violence.”

P

regnancy loss due to Zika infections that do not show any symptoms may be a common but unrecognized cause of miscarriages and stillbirths, raising concerns that the complications could be more common than currently thought, researchers say. The findings, published in the journal Nature Medicine, showed that 26 percent of non-human primates infected with Zika during early stages of pregnancy experienced miscarriage or stillbirth even though the animals showed few signs of infection. “These rates of fetal losses and stillbirths in Zika-infected preg-

nant monkeys were about fourfold higher than what is normally seen in unexposed monkey populations at these research centers,” said Koen Van Rompay, scientist at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). “Many of the fetal and placental tissues had evidence of Zika virus replication and also had pathological lesions, which further supports the role of Zika virus in this detrimental outcome,” Rompay added. Zika virus is widely known for causing children to be born with a brain abnormality called microencephaly and other malformations. Zika disease in human adults includes fever, rash, headache, joint and muscle pain, as well as red eyes;

The yet unnamed gene, currently referred to as C6 or f106, “regulates this process by switching off the production of certain cytokines to stop our immune response from spiralling out of control”, Xinhua news agency reported. The C6 has existed for more than 500 million years, preserved and passed down from simple organisms all the way to humans. But only now are we gaining insights into its importance, the scientist said.

NEW YORK: In a breakthrough, US researchers have found that women’s bladder is not a sterile place and can contain both beneficial and deadly bacteria, a finding that could lead to better diagnostic tests for urinary tract infections (UTI). The findings, published in the journal Nature Communications, debunked the common belief that urine in healthy women is sterile and showed that bacteria is “shared” between the bladder and vagina and the microbiota includes pathogens such as E. coli and S. anginosus as well as beneficial bacteria such as

L.iners and L.crispatus. The bacteria residing in both the bladder and vagina could provide protection against urinary infections. “Now that we know the bladder is not sterile, we have to re-evaluate everything we thought we knew about the bladder, and that is what we are doing,” said Alan J. Wolfe, microbiologist at the Loyola University Chicago.

Can aspirin help treat Alzheimer’s disease?

Air pollution linked to diabetes, India at greater risk

NEW YORK: Low-dose aspirin — commonly used to treat pain, fever — may help in lowering plaques in the brain, reducing Alzheimer’s disease pathology as well as protecting memory, says a study led by an Indian-origin researcher. Evidence shows that current levels are still not sufficiently safe and need to be tightened,” Aly explained. In the study, the team analyzed data from more than one million participants without diabetes history, who were followed for median of eight and a half years. They also looked at particulate matters, airborne microscopic dust, dirt, smoke, soot and liquid droplets.

US Postal Service defrauded of $16m

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- On June 25, the owners of a suburban bulk-mailing company–Prodigy--co-owned by Yogesh Patel 58, of Orlando, Florida and Arvind Lakkamsani, 57, of Northbrook, IL along with David Gargano of IL company swindled the US Postal Service out of at least $16 million by forging documents and secretly using an official date stamp to fraudulently authenticate payment of postage for than 80 million pieces of mail. According to criminal charges filed by the US Attorney’s Office in Chicago, Yogesh Patel and Arvind Lakkamsani owned and operated Prodigy Mailing Services Inc., which was based in Bolingbrook and later in Woodridge. Prodigy assembled bulk mailings from customers and provided the mailings–along with fraudulent payment and verification forms–to the Postal Service for delivery, without paying postage on those mailings. According to the charges, Patel and Lakkamsani schemed with a third defendant, David Gargano, to fraudulently cause the Postal Service to deliver numerous bulk mailings without payment. The trio forged a Postal Service clerk’s signature on the verification forms and secretly used an official Postal Service date stamp to make it falsely appear that the clerk had authenticated postage.

Bulk mailings From 2010 to 2015, the defendants caused a loss to the Postal Service of at least $16 million, according to the charges. A criminal information charges each of the three defendants–Patel, 58, of Orlando, Fla., Lakkamsani, 57, of Northbrook, Ill., and Gargano, 51, of Barrington, Ill.–with one count of mail fraud. The charges were announced by US Attorney and Acting Inspector-in-Charge of the US Postal Inspection Service in Chicago. According to the charges, Gargano owned Illinois-based Direct Mail Resources Inc., which collected a fee to match customers seeking to make bulk mailings with companies who could perform those services, such as Prodigy. Gargano referred two energy companies to Prodigy for bulk mailing services. The two energy companies provided millions of dollars to the defendants to

Indian student hacks campus computers

Varun H. Sarja

BY A STAFF WRITER AWRENCE, KS -- An IndianAmerican student who hacked into his school’s computer system last year to change his failing grades to “A” has been granted probation and asked to apologize to his professors. The judge granted Varun H. Sarja, 20, a year-and-a-half probation “with an underlying 18-month prison sentence that he could be ordered to serve should he fail at probation. Sarja, who was convicted in May on 18

felony counts, had pleaded guilty to two counts each of identity theft and unlawful computer acts. The remaining counts against him were dismissed. The criminal charges were filed against Sarja in November 2017. While studying engineering as a freshman at University of Kansas (KU) during the 201617 school year, Sarja used a keystroke logger to steal confidential login information and hacked into multiple campus computers to change his failing grades. A keylogger is a device plugged into the computer that tracks or logs the keys struck on the keyboard in a covert manner, enabling the hacker to get access to username and password. An investigation revealed that Sarja had changed almost all of his 10 grades that year and stole teachers’ login credentials to do it. “Sarja told detectives he loved engineering, wanted to be successful and was scared to tell his parents he had failed classes,” a media report noted. Sarja has agreed to the terms of his probation, saying he would apologize directly to those professors who were affected. Sarja, who hails from Olathe city, also told the judge that he would not access keyloggers again.

pay the postage for the companies’ bulk mailings. Instead of using those funds to pay the postage, the defendants split the money among themselves and used it for their own benefit. The information alleges that the defendants made the mailings but kept the postage money from the energy companies without paying postage to the Postal Service. Patel and Lakkamsani fraudulently obtained and maintained a key to a Postal Service mail unit room located inside their business premises of Prodigy, and used the key to secretly access an official date-stamp without the Postal Service’s knowledge or approval. By forging the Postal clerk’s signature and fraudulently stamping the mailings, the Patel and Lakkamsani made it falsely appear that the verification forms–which identified the amount of postage paid for the bulk mailings–were authentic and that postage had been appropriately paid, the charges allege. Bank account They also created and opened a bank account in the name of “Postmaster, Inc.”. The US Postal Service requires a verification form (Form 8125) to be filled in for each bulk mailing before delivery to verify that payment is made. The form is authenticated by Postal clerk and the Stamped. Since the Prodigy had been mailing a bulk of mails, US Postal Services opened a detached mail unit at their premises in their Woodridge

office. The door and the drawer of the stamp are locked with key in the possession of US Postal Service Clerk. Beginning in or about March 2010, and continuing until in or about February 2015, all three devised, intended to devise, and participated in a scheme to defraud the Postal Services and customers and pocketing more than $16 million, using the date-stamp of Postal services to look legibly paid for bulk mailing. They secretly gained entry into the room and locked cabinet drawer containing the stamp–by their unauthorized keys to the same. Back-dated receipts It was further revealed in the complaint that some of the bulk mailings were not sent at all and the false back-dated Postal mailing receipts, were sent to customers, falsely claiming to customers that mailing is done on time. Sometimes, no mail was sent and the funds obtained from customers for mailing were misappropriated for personal gain and benefit. It was further revealed in charges that Patel and Lakkamsani pocketed 50% of the fraudulent gain. To conceal the misappropriation of funds, the bank account in the name of “Postmaster, Inc.” was used to appear as US Post Office to dupe customers which include Energy companies. In United States mail fraud is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Man dupes immigrants, escapes to Mexico

Hardev Singh Mohan Singh Panesar

BY A STAFF WRITER OS ANGELES, CA -- A Southern California Indian American man accused of posing as a federal agent and bilking immigrants out of $1.5 million is being sought after authorities say he cut off his GPS ankle bracelet and fled to Mexico. According to a report, a warrant has been issued for the re-arrest of Hardev Singh Mohan Singh Panesar. The 70-year-old is accused of posing as a Homeland Security agent and promising more than 100 victims that he could obtain legal immigration status for them or stop their deportation proceedings for a fee of $40,000 each. The San Diego County man was awaiting trial when authorities were alerted on June 21 that his ankle monitor had been tampered with. Panesar was born in Kenya and speaks five languages, has frequently used aliases and is accused of being a chronic liar. Prosecutors argued for detention without bail after he was arrested in June

2017, but the magistrate judge granted release on $100,000 bond. In January, his attorney requested he be taken off home detention and allowed to be out between 6 am and 10 pm. He had performed well on bond thus far and was employed, the lawyer said. The judge granted the request. Authorities were alerted to the possibility of escape at 8:42 p.m. June 21. On June 23, Panesar’s wife, a US citizen who lives in Mexico, was detained when she entered the US through the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. She said her husband was staying at her house in Mexico. She agreed to stay in the US that evening so law enforcement could try to arrest him. But she fled back across the border and admitted to warning him, she told an FBI agent. He was gone when Mexican law enforcement arrived about 30 minutes later. Leticia Panesar was arrested on June 25 as she crossed back into the US. She has pleaded not guilty.

Border crisis: Mexican President must pay the price

BY A STAFF WRITER CHAUMBURG, IL -- The recent issues with the children at the Mexican border both touched me and irritated me. While I, as an immigrant, also felt the need to keep families together, I reminded myself of the challenging and worthwhile opportunity that I was given to come to the United States. It is a privilege, not an automatic. After all, there must be some rules and regulations to determine who enters. It is not to say that immigration should not occur, but rather, it should occur legally. I, JD (Jitendra Diganvker), Republican for Congress for the 8th district of Illinois, solemnly believe in fighting for all Americans. But, is it really the fault of the Congress or the President for the separation of families? No, of course, not! It is the fault of the parents who are illegally migrating over to the US. We must maintain some decorum. Or else, chaos would emerge. We must all honor and respect the institution of immigration legally. Consider if the immigrants from Mexico had applied and come in legally, would we be having this fight of Democrats versus Republicans or that on television? Is it rather the fault shared by the Mexican President and lack of proper enforcement of the border protection? We shall not stand quietly when it is a privilege to be an American legally for the rest of us immigrants. Many Hispanic friends of mine, who are Democrats, have stated to me that they also had to migrate legally from South American, Central American and other Spanish-speaking countries. So, this is not an argument against Hispanics, but rather anger and admonishment against the Mexican President and lack of a strong government.

S

Jitendra Diganvker.

Without even a chance to vet an immigrant? Is that really right? Legally, we should take immigrants from all over the world, including Mexico. What if a terrorist comes over and then bombs or kills someone? How stupid would that be? Many a movie has been made regarding the ease of crossing the border. Please don’t misunderstand. I am for immigration, but the key word is ‘legally’!!! Listen, Mr. President Nieto of Mexico! We must consider sanctions against you and restrict trade with you if you cannot support the building of a strong border protection with or without a wall. The concept is that if you have no laws or don’t enforce the ones you have, then there is chaos.

Stand up Mr. President Nieto of Mexico, and wake up to be a true President rather than a push-over puppet. Don’t make us proud Americans have to hear the crying kids separated from their illegally migrating parents. This is actually your fault. Take, for example, the druglord crisis and crimes in Mexico. Is the President of Mexico really running a strong nation or rather running a nation with fear of many of the drug cartel leaders? We all remember the craziness of the beheadings of the certain presumed drug cartel members. This must stop and we must see the beauty of Mexico for what it is. After all, Mexico is a beautiful place, where many Americans visit as tourists. We have good relations for business. And we should maintain this. Unfortunately, my opponent Raja Krishanmoorthi has no voice on this. I, as your Congressman, will stand strong for all Americans and be tough to support the right things for Americans. I love my Mexican friends and support all Hispanics who are in the US, whether they came legally or illegally. If they are here in the US, then we must work strong to make them responsible citizens as we are, contributing rather than hiding for fear of deportation. I want to advocate for strong American families, a strong economy, and more jobs and opportunities for those in America. We need to solve the high-priced Obamacare and put the safety of students and all Americans first. I am for all ethnicities, races, orientations, and religions. That is the beauty of America. What an opportunity it is to be an America! I am proud and honoured to be an American.

However, neither is playing basketball for the powerhouse Vikings, who have made the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Championships for four straight seasons, including two trips to the Final Four.

South Asian Spelling Bee winners named

(L-R) Karthik Nemmani (2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion), Sohum Sukhatankar (Regional Champion), Winston Fuller (Dallas Regional Judge), Rohan Raja (First Runner Up), and Cynthia Walters (Dallas Regional Pronouncer).

BY A STAFF WRITER E W B RU N S W I C K , N J – Continuing its quest for the best speller in the community, the 2018 South Asian Spelling Bee traveled to Texas and New Jersey this past weekend with stops in Dallas and New Brunswick. With a huge turnout this year, the Bee attracted some top talent as well as young and new spellers that competed for the coveted prizes and titles. At the Dallas Regional, current Scripps National Champion and South Asian Spelling

N

Bee alumnus Karthik Nemmani was at hand to interact with spellers and parents. Having attended the South Asian Spelling Bee for 5 years, Nemmani had specific insights about his experience at the event and its contribution to his success. “The South Asian Spelling Bee gave me exposure and a competitive edge that other bees lacked,” he told a gathering at the regional. Sohum Sukhatankar (12) of Dallas, Texas was the regional champ and Rohan Raja (12) of Irving, Texas, was the first runner up at the

Nartan dance concert to mark Father’s Day

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Nartan, the school of Bharatanatyam style of dance directed by Mrugakshi Patel, presented a concert of Bharatnatyam and folk dances to celebrate Father’s’ Day on June 16. The concert held at the Swaminarayan Temple in Streamwood and attended by more than 300 people featured several dances in contemporary Bharatanatyam style set to beautiful songs with complex rhythm, many of them popular Bollywood songs. Aside from Bharatnatyam dances, the concert also included very vigorous and graceful garba and Ghoomar dances set to heart-thumping popular Bollywood tunes. Himanshu Patel explained that fathers are unsung heroes of the families and thereby society. This concert was a way of paying tribute to all the fathers in public and making it a celebration shared by the entire community. As representatives of all fathers, several fathers who have contributed not only to their family but to the community at large were recognized by

Nartan Guru Mrugakshi Patel. She offered each one of them the traditional symbol of respect and affection--a shawl. Fathers who were recognised included Mafat Patel, founder of Patel Brothers and a philanthropist, successful entrepreneurs and community supporters--Chhota Patel and Dhiru Savagia, senior group leader Narsinh Patel, highly-decorated Gujarati poet and practicing physician Dr. Ashraf Dabawala, and Jayanti Thakkar, originator and organizer of health fairs at various temples. Two other fathers-- Harikrishna Patel, patriarch of the family that owns Bombay Bazaar and who lives under one roof in traditional Indian joint family style, and Gunvantlal Shah, “97 not out and still going strong” father of Mrugakshi Patel, were also felicitated. The most noteworthy father recognized was Viren Joshi--who founded Manav Sadhana in Ahmedabad, India and who has dedicated his life to the service of most disadvantaged people, having been a father to more than 10000 children as he has touched and transformed their lives.

Dallas Regional. In New Jersey, Nitya Kathiravan (9) of Edison, New Jersey was the regional champ and Sujata Choudhury (11) of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was the first runner-up. The event is open to children of South Asian descent up to 14 years of age. It will give South Asian children a chance to test their spelling skills in their core peer group. Organized by Touchdown Media Inc., the South Asian Spelling Bee is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year and with regionals being held in 6 locations across the United States. Regional centers for this

season include Washington, D.C. Metro, Charlotte, the Bay Area, Chicago, New Jersey, and Dallas. The top two spellers of each regional competition will advance to the finals to be held in New Jersey in August. Champion’s grand prize of $3,000 will be awarded to the winner at the finals. This year, the Bee is powered by Kawan-the world’s most popular ‘roti paratha’ brand. Sony Pictures Networks is the exclusive broadcast partner for the South Asian Spelling Bee and will be airing the series across 120 countries.

Indian techie’s hand in insider trading

BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA – An Indian American former software developer for Equifax faces insider trading charges related to the company’s massive data breach

A

last year. Sudhakar Reddy Bonthu, 44, used nonpublic information to determine Equifax had been breached last year before any public announcement and then bought put options that he exercised for a profit of more than $75,000 after the breach was announced, according to a court filing. Bonthu, an Indian citizen, entered a notguilty plea on June 28 before US Magistrate Judge Alan Baverman, who indicated the case would be referred to a US district judge for a guilty plea at a later date. Bonthu was allowed to remain free on a $20,000 signature bond, which means he doesn’t have to pay anything unless he fails to appear for hearings. Bonthu is the second former employee of

the Atlanta-based credit reporting company to face insider trading charges related to last year’s data breach. Jun Ying, former chief information officer of Equifax’s US Information Solutions, was indicted in March. The Securities and Exchange Commission on June 27 also charged Ying with insider trading. Ying has pleaded not guilty. A total of about 147.9 million Americans have been affected by Equifax’s data breach, which was disclosed to the public Sept. 7. Equifax shares plunged in value after the company disclosed the breach Sept. 7. Bonthu exercised his put options for a profit of more than $75,000, the court filing says. Equifax chief financial officer John Gamble and three other executives sold shares worth a combined $1.8 million days after Equifax discovered suspicious activity on its network, but Equifax said an independent committee determined that these executives did not know of the breach when their trades were made.

Anti-opioid program at Atlanta consulate

BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), Georgia Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage (GAPI), American Pain Association (APA) and Anand Entertainment collaborated to organize ‘Opioid Awareness Program’ at the Consulate General of India, Atlanta, on June 16. The informative program was graced by Indian Consul General Nagesh Singh, consular staff, Fulton County officials, leaders of Indian community Organizations and the media. The current deadly drug/opioid epidemic contributes to over 50,000 deaths a year. Just last year, the number of deaths was more than that of the whole Vietnam War. Dr. Sreeni Gangasani, emcee of the program and Chair of the 2019 AAPI Convention, said that AAPI and GAPI are trying to increase awareness of this epidemic through educational sessions and programs, and greatly appreciated support from Consulate staff and community leaders in conveying this message. Said Nagesh Singh: “It is a national

Indian physician bags innovation award

Dr Dinesh Gowda

BY A STAFF WRITER UBBOCK, TX -Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center pediatrician Dr. Dinesh Gowda was recently honored by university dean Dr. Steven Berk with the Dean’s Educational Innovation Award. The award, which was presented to the Indian American physician during a ceremony at the Odessa Country Club, is given in recognition of his contribution to help the school to meet its educational mission. Gowda is an associate professor of pediatrics and also clerkship director for third- and fourth-year medical students. Gowda made sure that the next generations of physicians are properly trained to provide a high level of care, according to his Texas Tech bio. Through his position of clerkship director, Gowda is responsible for developing curriculum, documenting the educational experience, and evaluating, grading, and providing feedback for the students. Gowda also has received other awards, including Outstanding Faculty Award voted by medical students and Top Pediatrician 2018 by the Top Doctor Awards. He then moved to New York to do his residency from Columbia University at Harlem Hospital.

emergency. We should engage with the mainstream in tackling this problem. We can work together on preventive measures. I commend GAPI/AAPI in its noble initiative in Georgia.” AAPI president-elect Dr. Naresh Parikh said AAPI/GAPI have been working closely with Dr. Sanjay Gupta of New Jersey on this

Opioid Awareness Program. Last year, 8,000 deaths were in the Pan-Asian group, mostly younger generation, so the community needs to mobilize. Opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone when taken with Xanax and alcohol can cause untimely death. Parents need to be advised to keep a close eye on their children for subtle signs of falling

Man threatens to kill official’s kids, held BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- A man has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill the children of Ajit Pai, the Indian American head of the Federal Communications Commission, according to a court document. Markara Man made the threat in emails sent to Pai, one of the senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, because he was angry that the FCC had repealed net neutrality, the affidavit filed in connection with the case by a law enforcement in a Virginia court said. The threat appears to be a sign of the extreme polarization being witnessed in the US. Man’s threat was, however, made in December last year, before the instigation by Waters. The FCC is a powerful government agency that regulates the internet, the cellphone spectrum and services, radio, television, and telephones. Net neutrality, which prevents internet service providers from giving special preferences to certain web sites or accept payment from a web service to give it priority or better access, was officially repealed earlier this month following a vote by a majority of the commissioners of the

FCC in December. Those opposing the repeal, who include some Republicans, say that without net neutrality, the cost of using the internet could go up for consumers and some sites may face a slowdown. Man, a resident of Norwalk in California, allegedly said in an email to Pai that the FCC head was responsible for the suicide of a child who had allegedly been upset by the repeal of net neutrality. After sending the email threatening to kill Pai’s children, Man sent another with picture of his family. Man also apologized to Pai, saying in a letter to the authorities, “I’m sorry I made a threat against your kids. That was crossing the line. I hope you’ll change your mind.”

Watson fellowship for Renuka Surujnarain BY A STAFF WRITER UEENS, NY -- Queens College freshman Renuka Surujnarain, a Jamaica, Queens, native, has been awarded a prestigious Jeannette Watson Fellowship, the City University of New York announced in a June 15 news release. “The second I heard about this opportunity through an information session at school, I knew it was a program meant for me. After multiple application drafts and mock interviews, I won a fellowship that would brighten the next three years of my college life,” said Surujnarain in a statement. Established in 1999, the Watson Fellowship provides New York City college students with three years of paid summer internships, in New York City or abroad, with leading non-profit, for-profit, and governmental organizations. The program is designed to develop students’ leadership skills, introduce them to intercultural

grades in school, apathy and depression, erratic behavior, aloofness, etc. and to seek immediate help. Dr. Sanjay Gupta from New Jersey, a pain management specialist and founder/director of American Pain Assocaition, cited statistics on the opioid crisis. In 2010, he said, no one talked about this, but in 2015 it became a hot topic. The problem has actually been going on for the past twelve years. In 2010 there were 30,000 deaths, about 100 a day, but issues like breast cancer, skin cancer, walking for fitness, and obesity etc.were more in the news. LaTrina Foster, director of the Fulton County Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, said Fulton County will use the money from litigating against prescribing drug cos. for more recovery services, for more awareness programs, for educational programs.” Dr.Asha Parikh, Chair, BOT, GAPI, explained the complexity of the epidemic and shared her concerns for some patients who need pain medication but are unable to get it because of restrictions and so turn to street drugs, while other patients get addicted to pain medications and reach out to street drugs.

experiences, and enhance their personal and professional growth, it said. Surujnarain, one of 15 area students to receive the award in 2018, begins her fellowship this year by interning with the Generation Study Abroad Initiative at the Institute of International Education in Manhattan.

BY A STAFF WRITER OLUMBUS, OH -- Finding it hard to get your team to work together? A cup of coffee may be the key to staying alert and working well together, says a team of researchers, including Indian American Amit Singh. According to the research, people who drank coffee before working had more positive feedback of their group’s performance as well as their own contribution on a given task. Coffee seems to work its magic in teams by making people more alert, said Singh of Ohio State University. “Not surprisingly, people who drank caffeinated coffee tended to be more alert. We found that increased alertness was what led to the positive results for team performance,” Singh said. The results were based on twin studies, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, involving over 100 students. While one study showed that those who drank coffee before the discussion rated themselves and their fellow team members more positively than those who drank coffee after the discussion, the second found that those who drank the caffeinated coffee rated themselves as more alert than those who drank decaf.
