India’s ties with US important: Modi The India-US partnership is an important contributor to peace in Asia and the world, says Prime Minister IANS, NEW DELHI
Modi’s conference to attract pharma players
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on August 29 said India’s strategic partnership with the U.S. is an important pillar of its foreign policy. “This partnership is not only relevant for the attainment of India’s national, regional and global aspirations, it is also an important contributor to peace, stability and prosperity in Asia and the world,” he said during an interaction with the Japanese media ahead of his visit to that country. Modi said: “As I have said in the recent past to visiting American dignitaries, we should not look at the relationship merely in terms of what India and the U.S. can do for each other, but more importantly, what India and the U.S. can do together, for the world.” “As the largest and oldest democracies in the world, there is also a convergence of values, which also means that it is natural for India and the U.S. to want to partner more closely with traditional friends who share such values, such as Japan,” he said. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. later this month.
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address Indian and American industry through video conferencing during his visit to the United States. The interaction is being organized by the U.S.India Business Council (USIBC) and participants from various industry segments are likely to join the call. While refusing to disclose the program’s details immediately, USIBC’s acting-president Diane Farrell said: “The USIBC is very pleased to be actively involved in planning for upcoming visits by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as Finance and Defense Minister Arun Jaitley.” According to a source, the conference call will be attended by a large number of players from the pharmaceutical and Information technology (IT) sectors. “The two key issues which are expected to set the stage for discussion are supply and quality of drugs, and intellectual property,” the source said. — IANS
Most Americans pessimistic about personal growth: Survey IANS, WASHINGTON
D
espite sustained job growth and better employment opportunities at lower levels post-Great Recession, most Americans still think the United States economy has undergone a permanent change for the worse. Seven in 10 U.S. citizens say the recession’s impact is permanent, up from half in 2009 when the recession officially ended, according to a new national survey at Rutgers University’s John J Heldrich Center for Workforce Development in New Jersey. According to the survey, just one in six Americans believes that job opportunities for the next generation will be better than for theirs; five years ago, four in 10 held that view. Roughly four in five Americans have little or no confidence
that the federal government will make progress on the nation’s most important problems over the next year, it added. “One-quarter of the public says there has been a major decline in their quality of life owing to the recession and 42 percent say they have less in salary and savings than when the recession began,” informed professor Carl Van Horn, director of Heldrich center. Only one in three thinks the U.S. economy has become better in last year while one-quarter thinks it will improve next year. Just one in six believes that job opportunities will be better for the next generation of American workers — down from four in 10 five years ago. The Heldrich center conducted its survey between July 24 and August 3 this year with a nationally representative sample of 1,153 Americans.
US identifies citizens fighting for IS WASHINGTON: United States intelligence and law enforcement agencies have identified around a dozen of its citizens, who have traveled to the Middle East to join jihad led by the Islamic State, officials said. As the group has grown stronger in recent months, more foreigners have gone to Syria to fight in its ranks, which has forced European and U.S. authorities to dedicate more resources to keep them from leaving their countries of origin, the sources said. IS has become more attractive than Al Qaeda for potential fighters because it rules the territory with strict Islamic law. “IS is able to hold itself up as the
true jihad,” a senior U.S. official said. Another factor that seems to attract new fighters to the group is the its brutality, The New York Times reported. IS published two videos of beheading US journalist James Foley and Steven Sotloff. The Washington Post reported on August 29 that at least three other hostages were subjected to waterboarding, an interrogation technique simulating the experience of drowning. It is estimated that more than 100 U.S. citizens have fought with rebel groups. Since January the number of U.S. citizens fighting for the rebels in Syria has doubled, a source said. — IANS

100 DAYS OF AN ASSERTIVE MODI The widespread view seems to be that Narendra Modi, who turns 64 on September 17, is proving to be a prime minister the country has lacked in recent decades — strong, decisive and pro-active M.R. NARAYAN SWAMY, NEW DELHI
A
s he completed 100 days in office on September 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity is still running high as he unleashes a new style of governance and is surprising everyone with his grasp of foreign policy expertise few thought he had it in him. Barring his most bitter critics, the widespread view seems to be that Modi, who turns 64 on September 17, is proving to be a prime minister the country has lacked in recent decades — strong, decisive and pro-active. His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) certainly thinks so. “Modi has taken bold decisions and has provided the direction on which government policies will unfold in the months and years to come,” said BJP spokesman G.V.L. Narasimha Rao, who interacts closely with the veteran politician. “There is a sea change in the last three months in the way the government functions,” Rao told IANS, comparing it with a decade of Congress rule. “Modi has empowered the bureaucracy and given a clear direction to the political leadership.” After presiding over Gujarat for 13 long years, Modi created history in May when he led the party to a stunning electoral win. The BJP became the first party in three decades to get a majority of its own

in the 545-seat Lok Sabha, crushing the Congress to a humiliating 44 seats. Although Modi formed a coalition government after being sworn in on May 26, it is Brand Modi that stands out. Some of his decisions are plainly visible. Besides giving a new direction in governance, the government has started on the gargantuan job of

financial inclusion of 1.2 billion Indians, to eradicate what Modi calls “financial untouchability” from the country, embarked on the difficult path of judicial reforms, displayed the will to hike rail fares and axed the decades-old Planning Commission, formed a special team to retrieve black money stashed abroad, set up a portal for
citizens to directly interface with the government. Ajay Shriram, president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), told IANS: “Investor sentiment is back as the new government demonstrates high commitment to growth and reforms. In our interactions with ministers and officials, we have found strong willingness to consider industry’s views and take up out-of-the-box solutions.” Modi has told ministers to curtail all wasteful expenditure and virtually banned foreign jaunts. All policy decisions are vetted. Do’s and don’ts have been issued to ministers and officialdom. Different ministries can no longer work at cross-purposes. And Modi the politician — who rose through the ranks after having once sold tea at a small town railway station in Gujarat — turned the customary August 15 Independence Day speech to connect with the people like no prime minister has done, underlining, among others, the basic social and civic values of cleanliness and hygiene. In what has taken most Modi watchers by surprise, the PM has shown a keen interest in foreign policy that saw all SAARC leaders, as well as of Mauritius, fly to New Delhi for his inauguration. He has made quick trips to Bhutan and Nepal to repair ruptures in relationships, taken a strong stand on Tamil rights in Sri Lanka.
Has the ‘acche din’ hype boomeranged? AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
month after assuming office, Narendra Modi had rued the absence in his case of the customary honeymoon period for a new prime minister. Now, the by-election setbacks and signs of dissonance at the top have cast a further shadow on his first 100 days as prime minister. The sombre mood was not quite what he might have expected at the start of his tenure. The prime minister and his party were then on a roll, having achieved what they could not have imagined in their wildest dreams before the general election — an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha. Modi’s stature was at its zenith then, as was exemplified by his sitting on a throne-like chair on a platform to address the ministers and party men sitting some distance away at a lower level. That his word was law was also evident from the fact that his
approval was necessary even for the selection of staff by any of the ministers. He also reduced to silence those of his colleagues who spoke out of turn, as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Office did on article 370 concerning Kashmir or General V.K. Singh did on the new army chief. Now, Modi’s exalted position has received a glancing blow from the BJP’s failure to perform up to expectations in the by-elections. And the evidence of a rift between Home Minister Rajnath Singh and another as yet unnamed senior minister has dented the government’s image. To what extent these intimations of political mortality will cramp the PM’s style is not
known. In all likelihood, it will make him all the more aware of the need to push ahead with greater vigor on both the administrative and political fronts. There is little doubt that the perception that he is not living up to his reputation as a doer is partly responsible for the marginal slide in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral position. As of now, there is little to show for his presence at the helm. The generally upbeat mood in the share markets is based more on the expectations of ‘achhe din’ or good days than on reality. There are visible signs of progress, even in the matter of cleanliness or “swachh Bharat”, including a cleansed Ganga, the young appear to lose interest.
The sombre mood was not quite what Prime Minister Narendra Modi might have expected at the start of his tenure. With expectations for good days being high, the PM•Modi has to deliver.

‘India offers red carpet, not red tape’ During Narendra Modi’s first visit outside South Asia after becoming PM, the Prime Minister woos Japanese companies to invest in India; Japan promises $35 billion to India over the next five years ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2 hard sold India to Japanese investors saying that his country offers only a red carpet and not red tape while dubbing his fiveday trip to Japan that ends on September 3 as “very successful”. “I’ve come to assure you there is no red tape but only red carpet that awaits you in India,” he said while delivering the keynote address in a seminar at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, co-hosted by Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro). Modi said India was also the only place where the Japanese industry would pleasantly find all the three ‘Ds’ — democracy, demography and demand. “I have come here to assure you that if you have to look anywhere outside Japan, you do not need to look here or there,” he said, adding: “We particularly want to encourage

‘Modi visit gives new dynamism to ties’ NEW DELHI: The Tokyo Declaration taking IndiaJapan relations to the next level — a Special Strategic Global Partnership — has lent “new dynamism” to the close ties between the two nations, especially with its emphasis on increased economic and defense cooperation, even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe failed to tie up the civil nuclear deal during this visit, say experts. Former foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal termed the visit “largely successful” with important decisions taken in the economic side, especially Japan’s promise of $33.58 billion over the next five years under the India-Japan Investment Promotion Partnership, that would include development of economic corridors, infrastructure, transport system and smart cities. Japan has also offered financial, technical and operational support to India for the Shinkansen system or the bullet trains.
and invite small and medium enterprises, as also small-scale industries.” The prime minister said India now has a government that is working on development and wants to step up manufacturing. He said he wished for India what he himself experienced when he was young when he did not have to think twice if a product said “Made in Japan”. According to the organizers, as many as 4,000 people had evinced interest in attending the event at a venue that could accommodate only 2,000. Later, speaking at a reception hosted by the Japan-India Association and the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship League, the prime minister said India and Japan were now working as “special strategic and global” partners. Modi suggested expanding links between people’s representatives by creating a Young Parliamentary Association and a Women’s Parliamentary Association.
India, Japan will steer the 21st century, says Modi Chinese media cautious TOKYO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said India and Japan’s friendship will determine the course of the 21st century. “There is no doubt that the 21st century belongs to Asia. But India and Japan’s friendship will determine how it will actually look like,” Modi told the Indian community in Japan after inaugurating the Vivekananda Cultural Centre here. “The state and direction of the 21st century will depend on the direction in which Japan and India try to take the world,” he said. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hosted a tea ceremony He said India’s youth have as a special gesture for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in attracted the world community Tokyo on September 1. towards India with their remarkable performance in the information technology sector. He said it was in the aftermath of the Information technology revolution that there was a dynamic shift on how the world looked at India. “We move the mouse (of the computer) and the world moves too,” Modi said. He said there should be no compromise on part of Indians with their self-esteem.

BEIJING: Contending that China was not interested in “geopolitical competition” and had “plenty of interests” in common with India, a leading Chinese daily known for its sharp views on India on September 2 hit out at Japan to observe that “Sino-Indian ties can in no way be counterbalanced by the Japan-India friendship” and dismissed interpretation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on expansionism as a “media hype”. Though Modi’s comment in Tokyo on September 1 about there being an 18th century expansionist mindset in the world today has made international media see it as an allusion to China, the fact remains that China-India relations are stable as India is “a rational country, displaying an independent foreign policy and loathing being an appendix of any particular power”, the Global Times said. It underlined that Sino-Indian ties “can in no way be counterbalanced by the Japan-India friendship”.

India-born researcher wins prestigious award Himanshu Asnani, a mathematics researcher, wins the Marconi Society Paul Baran young scholar award for 2014 FAKIR BALAJI, BANGALORE
H
imanshu Asnani, 27, an India-born mathematics researcher at Stanford University Electrical Engineering School in the U.S., is the winner of the Marconi Society Paul Baran young scholar award for 2014. “The prestigious award will be presented to Asnani at our annual event on October 2 at the National Academies of Sciences in Washington, DC,” Society’s young scholar selection committee Bob Tkach told IANS through email on September 2. Asnani, who hails from Kota in Rajasthan, is also a system engineer at the Swedish telecom major’s R&D center in the Silicon Valley, off the U.S. west coast. Though

Asnani aspired to become a neurosurgeon as a child under the influence of his parents who are doctors,
his exposure to mathematics and physics in teenage got him fourth rank in the IIT joint entrance exam. Graduating from IIT-Bombay in electrical engineering in 2009, Asnani went to the U.S. to do masters (MS) at Stanford and enrolled for Ph.D in the same subject. Named after Nobel laureate Guglielmo Marconi, who invented radio, and set up in 1974 by his daughter Gioia Marconi Braga through an endowment, the Marconi Society awards annually outstanding individuals whose scope of work and influence emulate the principle of ‘creativity in service to humanity’ that inspired Marconi. The award, with a cash prize of $400,000, is given to scholars who are 27 or younger at the time of the nomination.

.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, an Indian-origin scientist who received official recognition as the inventor of the computer program for electronic mail system or ‘email’ from the United States government 32 years ago, has slammed his critics for not giving him full credit. In an interview to Huffington Post, Ayyadurai, who was only 14 when he developed the technology,
Top recognition for India-born scientist WASHINGTON: India-born scientist Dr. Thomas John Colacot has won the American Chemical Society’s ACS Award in Industrial Chemistry, one of the top honors in the field. Colacot, who studied at St Berchman’s College, Changanacherry, Kerala and IIT, Chennai, is the first Indian to get the award in industrial chemistry. the first to create electronic office system. He called it email, a term that had never been used before, and then he went on and got official recognition by the U.S. government,” he told Huffington Post. Studying at Livingston High School in New Jersey, he began his work on the email system for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. In 1978, Ayyadurai developed a full-scale emulation of the inter-office mail system which he called ‘E-mail’.
Ashrita Furman and New York councilman Jimmy Jennaro with the garland.
World’s longest garland honors Indian spiritual guru in US NEW YORK: Over 200 meditation students of Sri Chinmoy from 35 countries, including India, have set a new Guinness world record for the world’s longest fresh flower garland to honor the Indian spiritual leader. Joining them at an event in Queens in New York, home to a large number of Indian-Americans, to honor Sri Chinmoy’s (1931-2007) 50 years’ work for world peace on his birthday on August 27 were New York City Councilman Jimmy and Ashrita Furman, holder of 206 current Guinness Records. The garland, which goes 8 km in multiple loops on Joseph-AustinField in New York’s Queens borough surpasses the previous record by 1.9 miles (3 km). Made of 180,000 carnations of various colors, it weighs 4000 lb (1800 kg), according to a media release. Chinmoy, a renowned peace visionary founded the Oneness-Home Peace Run, world’s largest torch relay for peace, composed 21,000 songs, wrote 1600 books and established meditation and peace centers in 60 countries. The supersized garland also
ensures Furman a new entry in the Guinness Book of Records. The previous record of a 5 km (3.1 mile) garland was set by a team in India, four month after Ashrita had broken the record with a 2 mile (3.2 km) garland in 2011. Furman, a 59-yearold health food store manager from Queens, New York currently holds 206 Guinness world records, including the official record for “the most records held at the same time by an individual”. Furman worked for three months with flower farms in South America and gathered a team from all over the world to plan the assembly of the garland, the release said. Furman and his team worked from 7 am until 2 pm to create the longest garland of the world. New York City Councilman Jimmy Gennaro completed the world’s longest flower garland by attaching the last flower assembly. “We hope this will inspire others to feel peace in their hearts. After the record we will give the flowers to people in the neighborhood,” said Furman. — IANS
NRIs pay a price for running convenience stores IANS, WASHINGTON
B
ack in 2006, Joe Biden, then a Senate candidate ran into trouble for a remark that “you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent.” Gaffe-prone Biden got away by explaining that it wasn’t a racial slur but “was meant as a compliment” for the “vibrant IndianAmerican community” making “a significant contribution to the national economy as well.” A spin or not, Biden who went on become vice president in 2008, was speaking a home truth as according to the Asian-American Convenience Store Owners Association its 50,000 members own over 80,000 convenience stores. That’s more than half the U.S .
convenience store count of 151,282 as of December 31, 2013. These small retail businesses provide the public a convenient location to buy daily necessities (predominantly food and gasoline) and services. There is one convenience
store for an average of every 2,100 residents all over the U.S. with non-fuel sales of $205 billion, according to National Association of Convenience Stores. Then there are what have come to be known as Potels or motels
owned by Patels from India’s Gujarat state in practically every single small town of America. The Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) is currently headed by Pratik Patel. It claims its 12,500 members, largely Indian-American, own more than 20,000 properties making up more than 40 percent of all hotels in the U.S. They employ nearly 600,000 workers, accounting for over $9.4 billion in payroll annually. But this very ubiquitous presence of Indian-owned convenience store often makes them the target of attacks as it happened in Ferguson, a small pre-dominantly black town in Missouri which erupted into violent protests after a White policeman shot dead an unarmed black teenager on August 9.

In targeted precincts on Election Day, bilingual paper optical-scan ballots also will be available. Absentee Voting by Those Permanently Disabled or Incapacitated or Residents of Nursing Homes or Licensed Care Facilities: Registered voters who are permanently disabled or incapacitated or who are residents of a licensed nursing home or care facility may request an Affidavit and Application for Disabled Voter or Resident of Nursing Home or Care Facility, Form 504DVI. Large Ballot Viewers are magnifying lenses designed to enlarge the print on the paper ballots. Door Bells: Polling places that have heavy doors will be equipped with door bells, which are placed outside the entrance to the polling place. When the voter rings the bell, a judge of election will come and open the door for the voter. Threshold Ramps are placed at polling places where the door threshold is such that a voter in a wheelchair may have difficulty entering. Information and Services Notice: This notice is printed in very large type, in order that visually impaired voters can be assisted. This Notice is to be posted on the wall of the polling place. Where needed, an Alternate Entrance Sign will be posted at polling places to give notice to voters with disabilities where they may gain clear access to the polling place. Curbside Voting: Voters may request assistance if they are unable to gain access to their polling places because of structural features of the building. A Request for a Ballot by a Voter who is Unable to Enter the Polling Place must be completed and submitted before Election Day. By using this form, a voter may request that two (2) judges of election of opposite political parties bring a ballot to a location where forward motion toward the polling place can no longer be continued; but, in no case shall a ballot be delivered to the voter beyond 50 feet of the entrance to the building in which the polling place is located. At this location, an application for ballot must be completed by the voter and verified by the judges. The voter will be allowed to cast their ballot privately. Chicago voters must make this request, in writing, to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, 69 W. Washington St., Suite 600, Chicago, Illinois 60602, no later than 5:00 PM on the day before the election. police case was registered here on August 31 against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for his objectionable tweets on Lord Ganesh. On a complaint by lawyer Karuna Sagar, a case was filed against Varma at the Saroornagar police station in Cyberabad. “We have registered a case against Varma. We will seek legal opinion before proceeding further in the case,” Saroornagar police inspector B. Naveen Reddy told IANS. The filmmaker was booked under four sections of the Indian Penal Code — sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), and 298 (hurting religious feelings). The complainant alleged that Varma hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus by insulting Lord Ganesh through his series of tweets. Several police complaints were also filed against Varma in Mumbai for his objec-

‘ABCD 2’ an ode to Indian dancers IANS, MUMBAI
V
arun Dhawan, who has started shooting for Remo D’Souza’s ABCD 2, says the film is dedicated to dancers across the country. For ABCD 2, he has teamed up with Shraddha Kapoor, who had earlier called him a “fantastic dancer” and that she was nervous to match dance steps with him. The youngster who flaunted his dancing skills in movies like Student of the Year and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, is ready to wow his fans again. “Since I was a little boy I’ve had a passion for dancing. Today (Sunday) I start#abcd2 as an ode to dancers across India (sic),” he tweeted on August 31. After the back to back success of Aashiqui 2 and EK Villain, Shraddha Kapoor has already kickstarted the shoot for ABCD 2. The shoot began on August 31 and Shraddha was spotted outside Remo D’souza’s studio with her costar Vraun Dhawan. Varun to had a successful run at the boix office. After tasting stardom with Karan Johar’s candy floss college drama Student of The Year, the Dhawan lad enjoyed success with his Main Tera Hero and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.
‘Raja Natwarlal’ — not even a prince Film: “Raja Natwarlal”; Actors: Emraan Hashmi, Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Humaima Malick; Director: Kunal Deshmukh; Rating: ***
T
u apna kiss karta rahe, Paresh Rawal sarcastically scoffs at the ‘serial kisser’ Emraan Hashmi after he catches him necking Pakistani actress Humaima in a lift in Cape Town. These inhouse jokes, I tell you! They are the life and death of a certain kind of cinema where the script has to be far clever than the audience. In Raja Natwarlal, a con caper with a lot going for it at least on paper, Emraan has little to do that could catapult him to the next level of his career. He swings along in the low tide of this film’s too-clever-for-its-owngood plot, happy to play the “lovable” (giggle!) con-man who chances on a scam much bigger than he had bargained for. The film is essentially a cat-and-mouse chase between Emraan’s Natwarlal accompanied by a wry rogue named Yogi
(Paresh rawal, giving a terrific shape to his ill-defined role) and a business tycoon in Cape Town named Vardha (Kay Kay Menon) whose passion for cricket makes him a sitting duck for a cricket scam masterminded by the aforementioned con
persons who, like the script, is not half as clever as he’s like to believe. Hence, entire banks and automobiles are sham-constructed within hours to dupe the kingpin villain. Like a woman during her time of the month, the script here has its good and bad moments. While the basic premise of getting the better of a powerful adversary works, some of the individual components in the plot such as the pre-climactic set-up where Kay Kay Menon’s character is properly had, makes us wonder how a man who has accumulated billions can be so dumb. Love does it to a lot of smart people. Here it is cricket. Director Kunal Deshmukh had earlier described the complex affinity between cricket and avarice in Jannat. To its credit, it must be said that Raja Natwarlal is a far more tightly-wound and original idea that flounders only when the characters try to act smarter than the script allows them to.

Mary Kom, will hit the screens on September 5. The film has already been declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Recently she was touring Lucknow to promote Mary Kom, which will have its world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), starting September 3. Priyanka Chopra, who has managed to pull off different looks in her over decade-long movie career, has sported a bald look for her forthcoming film Mary Kom. Bollywood’s link with sports is great: Ranbir Kapoor MUMBAI: Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who has stakes in the Mumbai City Football Club (FC) franchise of the Indian Super League (ISL) soccer tournament, believes Bollywood celebrities’ involvement in sports in the country is beneficial in many ways. Apart from Ranbir, the ISL has star team co-owners such as John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, while Varun Dhawan endorses the Goa team. “It’s a great thing, and every sport should be encouraged in the country. Cricket is our first love, but that doesn’t mean we should not give kabaddi or football a platform,” the 31-year-old said here recently at the launch of his football club. “More than anything, you are giving opportunities to the youth to become a football player or kabaddi player and not necessarily a cricketer,” he added.
Katrina Kaif voted sexiest woman alive MUMBAI: Arch rival Deepika Padukone may be ruling the roost at the moment, but Katrina Kaif is still the sexiest woman alive. The actor was recently voted the "Sexiest Woman Alive" by a Youth Survey 2014 conducted by the national daily, elbowing out the likes of Hollywood star Angelina Jolie and singer Beyonce Knowles to bag the top spot by 37 percent of the votes. This comes as no surprise, especially since the actress was named "India's Most Beautiful" by a leading magazine this year and also crowned the "Sexiest Woman in the World" for the fifth year in a row, a feat no other Bollywood actress has managed to achieve so far. With Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Mahindra Singh Dhoni and Aamir Khan in the race, Katrina Kaif was one of the front runners on India's Most Attractive Personality list, coming in at the number six position according to a survey held by TRA — Trust Research Advisory across 15 prime cities in the country. If that wasn't all, Katrina, also secured the top spot in the world-renowned 50 Sexiest Asian Women List 2013. Despite not a single release so far in 2014, Katrina managed to stay in news courtesy her much speculated upon relationship with actor Ranbir Kapoor. She is all set to sizzle on screen with Hrithik Roshan in Bang Bang in October. Recently, a party organized by director-producer Karan Johar, the latest star couple Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were spotted driving to the party together.
‘Pay disparity to stay in Bollywood’ MUMBAI: Actor Bipasha Basu says the remuneration disparity between actors and actresses will not change in filmdom, adding that she doesn’t loose sleep over this anymore. “Remuneration disparity is not going to change much,” Bipasha, who is active in the Hindi film industry since 2001, told IANS. “It’s definitely going to remain the same because the kind of box office Salman Khan does may be a Katrina Kaif won’t achieve that alone. It’s just normal infrastructure and business, so I am not really crying about it,” she added. But at the same time she feels in terms of role, the situation is getting better for the actresses. “I believe we are going to get a lot of space in the industry, and women would get to play a lot of role. I think it’s going to change and at every age a woman would get an interesting role to play,” said the 35-year-old whose right now looking forward to her next release Creature 3D. “Now the actress is not just an arm candy who sings and dances. It’s getting better,” she said and added that some of the recent women centric films were good.

6,000 student visa-holders play vanishing trick BY A STAFF WRITER
W
ASHINGTON, DC -- In a major lapse that poses security threats to the United States, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has lost track of more than 6,000 foreign nationals who entered the country on student visas, overstayed it and then vanished. All of them were on a list of people who were of ‘heightened concern’ to DHS officials. DHS officials disclosed the breadth of the student visa problem submitted as part of an investigation into persistent complaints about the nation’s entry program for students. Immigration officials have struggled to keep track of the rapidly-increasing numbers of foreign students coming to the US on F-1 and other visas, now in excess of one million each year. The immigration agency’s own figures show that 58,000 students overstayed their visas in the past year. Of those, 6,000 were referred to agents for follow-up because they were determined to be of heightened concern. According to Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla, since the September 11, 2001 terror attacks, 26 student visa holders have been arrested in the US on terror-related charges. Tightening up the student visa program was one of the major recommendations made by the 9/11 Commission, after it was determined that the hijacker who flew Flight 77 into the Pentagon, Hani Hanjour, had entered the US on a student visa but never showed up for school. The report also pointed out that despite repeated concerns raised by Congress, federal immigration officials have also continued to grant schools certification to accept overseas applicants even if the schools lack accreditation, state certification, or any obvious measure of academic rigor. There are now more than 9,000 schools on the government approved list. The list includes

from our core Korean American customer base to the wider Asian American and mainstream communities, making Hanmi the first Korean American Bank to extend into these additional communities.” Kum continued, “I am very pleased that the transaction has proceeded so smoothly, and we can now fully focus our efforts on integrating the two banks as quickly as possible. With the new Hanmi Bank, all of our loyal customers will have the benefit of a larger product offering, improved lending capacity, and enhanced customer service.” The transaction was announced December 16, 2013 and approved by shareholders of Central Bancorp on April 17, 2014. The combined companies will operate as Hanmi Financial Corporation
and Hanmi Bank, respectively, with banking operations conducted under the Hanmi Bank brand. Headquartered in Los Angeles, Hanmi Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hanmi Financial Corporation, provides services to the multi-ethnic communities across California, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey and New York with 50 full-service branches as well as loan production offices in Texas, Virginia, and Washington State. Hanmi Bank specializes in commercial, SBA and trade finance lending, and is a recognized community leader. Hanmi Bank’s mission is to provide a full range of quality products and premier services to its customers and to maximize shareholder value.
Deported Indian college teacher back in Arakanas BY A STAFF WRITER
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla,
such top flight American colleges as Harvard and Yale, but it also includes 86 beauty schools, 36 massage schools and nine schools that teach horseshoeing. Foreign students can enter the US on a visa to study acupuncture, hair braiding, or join academies that focus on tennis and golf. Once the student arrives in the US, it is up to the schools to keep track of the visa-holder’s whereabouts, and report to the government if they repeatedly miss class. A number of forprofit schools appear to have been operating with a primary goal of selling visas, not educating students, said the report. Thomas Kean, 9/11 Commission CoChair, says that the government is yet to address the security gaps the program has created. He said he was stunned the federal government continues to lose track of so many foreign nationals who had entered the country with student visas. He noted that, even before the 9/11 terror attacks, federal officials had been aware of the gaps in the student visa program. The man who drove the van containing explosives into the World Trade Center garage in 1993 was also a student visa holder who was a no-show at school. The effort to expand options for foreign study appear to be prevailing. According to figures gathered by congressional investigators, the number of foreign nationals obtaining visas to study in the US has grown from 662,966 in 2003 to more than 1.2 million in 2012.

RKANSAS - A community college professor, who was denied re-entry to the US after making a humanitarian aid trip to Guatemala with her church, finally returned home to Nashville, Arkansas on August 22. Molly Sirigiri, who teaches general biology, microbiology, and anatomy and physiology at Cossatot Community College University of Arkansas, had departed on July 1 with a team from the First Baptist Church of Nashville, Ark., for a week-long mission at the Casa Aleluya orphanage in Guatemala City. But on her return home, she was held back from her team at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. After a 24-hour detention in Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, Sirigiri was flown to India, via Munich. The Nashville Leader reported that the Indian Consulate in Houston told the mission leader that it appeared Sirigiri had applied for an extension of her H-1B visa and was awaiting approval when she traveled to Guatemala. She was not eligible for an automatic revalidation and therefore denied re-entry. In lieu of deportation, US officials allowed Sirigiri to withdraw her pending application for extension of her visa and apply afresh, according to the Consulate. University officials said they paid a “premium processing fee” to have a decision rendered within 15 days. In a press statement, Cossatot Community College Chancellor Steve Cole said the university worked with Arkansas Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman to get Sirigiri’s visa processed expeditiously.
“Molly is a special person to UA Cossatot. Not only is she a teaching rock star for us, but more importantly, she is a vital part of her church and community. The best possible result came from this, and that was her quick re-entry back into the United States,” said Cole. Sirigiri could not be reached for comment, but said in a press statement: “I am thankful to be back in Nashville and teaching. I am very thankful for people I consider my family in the United States.” She attended church services two days after she returned home to Arkansas and began teaching again on August 25. HECTICPREPARATIONSTOACCORD GRAND RECEPTION TO PM MODI C BY A STAFF WRITER
HICAGO, IL -Preparations are in full swing to accord a grand reception to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at New York’s Madison Square Garden (MSG) on September 28. Dr. Bharat Barai, president of the 11-member Indian American Community Foundation (IACF) specially formed last month to organize and make the reception a successful event, has been holding meetings around the US, including New York, to apprise the community of the visit and mobilize members, secure a limited number of free tickets and raise funds locally. One such meeting of Chicagoland activists, organizations and news media was convened by Dr. Barai at Devon’s Northshore Banquet Hall on August 20 to inform the local IACF chapter about the efforts being made to plan the a memorable welcome for Modi. Barai, along with the Overseas Friends of the Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP) and others have set up the IACF. The chairman of the IACF is Chandrakant Patel of Tampa, FL who is also the president of the OFBJP. The vice chair of IACF is H.R.Shah, owner of TV Asia. A website, pmvisit.org has been created which allows organizations to register and reserve batches of seats which they would then distribute at their discretion to members or individuals from the community. The meeting, in which Nirav Patel, Jitendra Diganvker, Balwinder Singh and Vinesh Virani also spoke, highlighted key issues such as ways to ensure fair and equitable distribution of the free entry passes, affordable transportation to the New York venue and a smooth

schedule for all. It was decided that bronze sponsors will pay their way individually at $1000 as a matter of principle, and they have been allotted 1000 seats. The remaining 16,000 seats are available at no cost but secured by name. The venue can accommodate up to 18,000 attendees. The organizers hope that about 50 Chicagoland associations will sign up. Doors of Madison Square Garden will open at 9.30 am for security procedures, and the program will start at 11 am sharp, according to Dr Barai. The Prime Minister is expected to arrive at 11.30 am and speak for 50 minutes. “There will be no introductions.
No one else will be on the stage and no question-and-answer session is planned. There will be 45 minutes to an hour of cultural programs”, he said. The Indian Ambasador to the US Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is hosting a dinner for Modi but only for his own invitees though IAFC will recommend sponsors to invite. There will be no state dinner but democrats and Republicans will meet Modi together on September 30. Indeed, Dr Jaishankar, BJP leader Ram Madhav and a joint secretary from the Prime Minister’s office also recently attended the meetings of committees formed to organize the reception for Modi. At a meeting held at the New York consulate on August 10, Dr Bharat Barai explained the steps taken so far. Leaders from the Overseas Friends of the BJP, which is not very happy that its leaders were sidelined from organizing the reception, attended the meetings. In addition to core committees, a 38-member advisory committee comprising people from different states in India and belonging to different religions too met at the consulate. The Indian Ambassador explained that the reception would not be an event organized by the embassy or the consulate, but an event of the people for the Prime Minister. “It is above political, religious or regional considerations and the advisory committee reflects the diversity”, he said. According to Madhav, the Prime Minister wants it as an event representative of an emerging India. “Even though only 18,000 people can attend the event at the Madison Square Garden, it will be visible to Indians everywhere and it should be an event that
shows the unified spirit of the Diaspora”, he said. The event will not be ticketed but the $1.5 million needed for the event will be raised from sponsors. Dr Barai said the initial misunderstandings in the community had subsided and there was no controversy now.. The Madison Square Garden has been booked by Bharat Jotwani’s Poojanka Entertainment. Dr Barai, who personally paid the advance of $165,000 to book the stadium and took responsibility to pay off the remaining $400,000, said he did not have the freedom to take all the decisions regarding raising money, but had plans. “The plans will be discussed in the committees and will be submitted for approval before announcement”, he said. Meanwhile, the OFBJP said in a statement that it was leading in organizing the event and working towards the mobilization of all Indian national and ethnic organizations to organize the event. Vijay Jolly, the BJP’s global convener of overseas affairs, is on a 12-day visit of the US to mobilize community leaders and Indian Diaspora for the event. He along with Chandrakant Patel, OFBJP-USA president, has been touring several American cities, meeting business leaders, US lawmakers, and think-tank groups in preparation for the community event. Patel, along with the OFBJP team, is facilitating the tour to motivate OF BJP members and supporters for the event, and will present a report to t h e Pr i m e Mi n i s t e r, d e s c r i b i n g issues faced by the Indian Diaspora in the US.
Nail polish alerts wearers of date rape drugs Bal Vihar-Hindu Temple pact for new center

ALEIGH (NC) -- Undergraduates at North Carolina State University are being credited with creating a new kind of nail polish. The polish doubles as a way to prevent sexual assault. The nail polish changes color when the person wearing it is exposed to date rape drugs. The person wearing the nail polish has to use their finger to stir their drink. If the drink has a date rape drug in it, the nail polish will change colors. Reports says, 55 per cent of about 1,570 colleges and universities with more than 1,000 students received at least one report of forcible sex offense on campus in 2012. Between 2010 and 2012 there were 14 forcible sex offenses reported on N.C State’s campus. T LOUIS (MO) -- Finally, an agreement has been signed between Bal Vihar of St Louis and Hindu Temple. The pact marks a major milestone in the journey towards keeping the light of cultural torch burning bright. On July 31, Bal Vihar presented a check of $250,000 to the Hindu Temple to begin construction of the new building adjacent to the temple. In an auspicious moment, the priest offered at the feet of God, the documents reflecting the good faith of both the parties and for a bright future to next few generations. After
the prayers, the documents were formally signed and presented to Hindu Temple along with the token amount. Bal Vihar has also committed to help the temple raise additional funds and assured another $150,000 upon occupying the building. Both parties have signed a lease of 99 years. A total of 8 new classrooms and 2 large rooms will be built on the second floor of the community center. The community center will also have a kitchen and large hall on the first floor. Bal Vihar is expecting to start its classes at this new facility from school year 2017-2018. For Bal Vihar, the journey isn’t over. This was just a major stop to reflect upon the past and contribution to the community. It is also a moment of realization that the dreams of having a permanent facility for the community and supported by the community would come to fruition in next few years. The new center is being built for other organizations within the community. Having a center next to the temple will also help the families to leverage the opportunity to instill more culture and faith in their children.

RSS leader killing: Shutdown in Kerala The dawn-to-dusk shutdown called to protest the killing of RSS leader K.T. Manoj in Kannur district; BJP president calls for strengthening the party in the state IANS, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
T
housands were stranded at bus and railway stations across Kerala on September 2 as a BJP-RSS sponsored shutdown to protest the murder of a RSS leader derailed life in the state. Minor incidents of sporadic attacks on motorists who defied the strike call were reported in parts of Kerala. Across Kerala, shops, businesses and markets were deserted. The government declared a holiday for all educational institutions. Attendance in government offices was said to be thin. Barring two-wheelers and some private vehicles, the streets were mostly deserted. Buses of the state-owned transport department
and private buses did not venture out fearing attacks by protesters. In some places, a few buses that came on to the roads were stoned by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) activists. The crew quickly called off the service. The dawn-to-dusk shutdown was called to protest the killing on September 1 of RSS leader K.T. Manoj in Kannur district. Unknown assailants first hurled bombs at his vehicle and then attacked him with swords, police said. Kannur has for years seen clashes between BJP-RSS activists and supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) but the violence had waned in recent times. Those who reached Kerala by
trains and buses found themselves stranded as public vehicles refused to ply. “We have come from Tamil Nadu and we have to go to a hospital around 50 km away,” complained a male member of a family that reached Eranakulam railway station from Tamil Nadu. Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh leader K.T. Manoj was on September 1 attacked by unknown assailants with bombs as he was going in a vehicle in Kathiroor in Kannur district and then run through with swords, according to the local police. Soon after the murder took place, the RSS had called for a shutdown in Kannur district, but by evening, decided to extend it throughout the state.
Amit Shah to revive Kerala BJP unit THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has to be strengthened, party president Amit Shah said here on September 1 while addressing party members on the concluding day of his visit. Shah arrived in the state capital on August 31 night on his first visit to the state after becoming the BJP president. “We are going to launch a nationwide membership drive on November 1. The BJP workers in Kerala should go on a door-to-door

n a fresh controversy for the Modi government, the son of Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has been booked for rape and cheating on a complaint by Kannada film actor Maithreyi. The Gowdas denied the charges on August 28, even as Maithreyi was summoned by police to record her statement but did not appear. “We have booked a case against Karthik Gowda after the woman filed a complaint Wednesday... under sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating),” Deputy Police Commissioner T.R. Suresh told IANS. Maithreyi accused the 30-year-old Karthik Gowda of sexually abusing and cheating her by getting engaged to another woman after marrying her “secretly” June 5 in Mangalore. master of witty anecdotes, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar once liberally used a popular bikini adage to make a point about governance and number crunching. “Statistics are like a woman wearing a bikini. What they reveal is vital. What they hide is even more vital,” Parrikar would often say to peals of laughter from his acolytes.

She made the charge on August 27 after learning about Karthik’s engagement to Rajashri alias Swathi, daughter of industrialist Nanaiah, in Kodagu district. The incident came a day after the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and BJP president Amit Shah came out in support of Home Minister Rajnath Singh who had threatened to quit over charges of unexplained misconduct against his son Pankaj Singh. According to Maithreyi’s complaint, Karthik married her at his house in Mangalore and promised her a public wedding after convincing his parents.
Tourists’ paradise Goa caught in bikini politics
But judging by the goings-on over the last two months or so, the two-piece bathing accessory now
appears to have come to haunt Parrikar’s BJP-led coalition government. It may sound ridiculous, but
the bikini controversy has triggered a churning and a split in the conservative end of Goa’s political axis. The garment has also come close to creating a rift between the BJP and its ally, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), whose legislators have first opened the conservative politics ball. Electorally, both parties heavily rely more or less on the conservative Hindu voter, who is relishing the prospects of a Hindutva revival under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
campaign for this and expose the corrupt deals of the Left and the Congress-led UDF here,” said Shah. Kerala is the only state among the big ones in the country where the BJP is yet to open its account in state assembly. “You should contest the polls for winning and not just for the sake of contesting,” said Shah who asked the party leaders to work hard for the local body polls next year and the assembly polls, the year after that.
KCR makes big infra push for Telangana HYDERABAD: World-class roads up to a length of 1,000 km at an investment of `100 billion, two corridors connecting four corners of Hyderabad and four lakh LED street lights were some of the major announcements made on August 29 by Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. Announcing series of measures to develop the city as the best destination for business and industry, he said the technology for the roads would be better than the one used in cities like New York and London. Fresh from his visit to Singapore and Malaysia, KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, said roads to a length of 500 km would be completed in two years and the remaining 50 percent would be done in another two years. In a move to ease congestion, he said an east-west four-lane corridor (skyway) would be developed between Vanasthalipuram and Ramachandrapuram. “Similarly a corridor will be developed between north and south,” he said while opposing the proposal mooted by officials for construction of 25 flyovers. The chief minister was speaking at the inauguration of Hyderabad property show organized by Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI) here. He announced 1,500 major and medium rain water drains will be developed or restored to permanently solve the problem of flooding of roads and residential colonies during rainy season. He termed stagnation of rain water on roads as a shame on administration. KCR said another outer ring road would be developed in addition to the existing one with satellite townships and specialized clusters like pharma city, sports city, health city and cinema city.

maiden ODI century in 96 balls and their 183-run stand ended when Rahane sliced Harry Gurney to Alastair Cook. Dhawan, who hit 11 fours and four sixes, then took the team home safely and sealed the victory by hitting Gurney for a six over mid-on. The win will help India ease the pains of the humiliating 1-3 loss in the Test series. The first ODI in Bristol was washed out while India won the second ODI in Cardiff by 133 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method and the third in Nottingham by six wickets.

Sania and Cara will now face Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the semifinal. The Swiss-Italian pair registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over fifth seeds Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia. Sania has now equalled her best performance here. In Cardiff and Nottingham, it were the Indian spinners, who did the damage. But here at Edgbaston, England batsmen crumbled against Indian pacers. But the pick of the Indian bowlers was pacer Mohammed Shami, who got three for 28, and left arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja who got two for 40. Moeen Ali provided a late spark with a quickfire 67 off 50 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, but was soon losing out of partners. The last four wickets fell for just 12 runs as England were lucky to get past the 200-run mark.

BCCI urged not to postpone AGM NEW DELHI: Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the spot-fixing and betting case in the Indian Premier League (IPL), on September 2 requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) not to postpone the Annual General Meeting (AGM) just to facilitate N. Srinivasan’s re-election for a third term as the president. “Despite clear directive by the apex court, a disturbing trend is being noticed in the BCCI. A section of the officials, if the reports are to be believed, have chalked out a plan to postpone the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) indefinitely. It is a clear conspiracy to keep the BCCI elections hanging till Srinivasan gets any relief from the Supreme Court,” said Verma in a statement. The BCCI AGM is slated for month end as Srinivasan’s term ends on September 29. But the BCCI may find it tough to host the AGM as scheduled after the Supreme Court on September 1 ignored pleas to reinstate Srinivasan as its president. What has struck the BCCI hard is also the fact that the apex court gave two more months to the Mukul Mudgal Committee to submit the final report in the spot-fixing and betting scandal in the 2013 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). — IANS

MONZA (ITALY): Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg expects his Force India to be competitive at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza here for this weekend’s Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix. “I expect us to be quite competitive. It should be better for us than Spa. It’s all about power and top speed and we know the engine will be strong. We also have a new low downforce rear wing that we will use for Monza only. ndia’s P.V. Sindhu had to be content with the bronze as Spaniard Carolina Marin proved the better shuttler on the day, winning the women’s singles semi-final quite easily in straight games at the World Badminton Championships here on August 30. The 11th-seeded Sindhu had created history on August 29 when she made the last four to become the first Indian to notch two medals at
the sport’s most prestigious event, having also clinched the bronze last year in Guangzhou. Expecting to go one better this time around, the ninth-seeded Spaniard halted that dream by taking the contest 21-17, 21-15 in 47 minutes at the 9,200-seater Ballerup Super Arena. In the final, Carolina stunned reigning Olympic champion Li Xuerui of China to become the first European in 15 years to clinch the women's singles crown.

SOUTH CINEMA
MIDWEST EDITION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014
‘Never imagined I’d be successful in cinema’ Pranitha has starred in over a dozen southern films since making her debut in 2010 IANS, CHENNAI
S
outhern actor Pranitha Subhash, who comes from a family of doctors, always aspired to choose an academic-oriented career. But neither she nor her parents thought she would become a successful actress. Pranitha, who made her acting debut in 2010 Kannada film Porki, has starred in over a dozen southern films since then. “I’m happy with the way my career is progressing. But I didn’t even imagine that being a Kannadiga, from a highly academic-oriented family, I would ever get into films. Even if I had not become a doctor like my parents, I would’ve done something to do with academics,” Pranitha told IANS. “This (cinema) is something completely different from what my parents would’ve imagined for me. Four years ago, nobody would’ve even anticipated I would be here. But you see, life is all about experimenting and going with the flow,” she said. “I play a role people would expect out of me in Rabhasa, which has all the commercial elements to appeal to the masses,” she added. Jr NTR plays the lead in Rabhasa, and Pranitha said “it was a sight to see him dance on sets”. “He’s a brilliant dancer and a wonderful coactor as well,” she added. After Telugu hits Attarintiki Daaredhi and Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda, this is the third time Pranitha is appearing as a second lead. The actor doesn’t mind it because “it’s the trend of multiple heroines in Telugu filmdom. Moreover, my roles have always been justified and well appreciated”.
Hundred days of ‘Manam’, Nagarjuna nostalgic CHENNAI: Actor Akkineni Nagarjuna remembered his late father, legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao, on the 100th day of his last Telugu film Manam, which featured actors from three generations of the Akkineni clan. “#ANRlivesON 100days of MANAM/ feeling emotional and missing Amma & nana terribly/ thank you my friends for giving father a glorious inning:),” Nagarjuna posted on his Twitter page on August 29. Nageswara Rao passed away few months before the release of Manam, which also starred Nagarjuna, his wife Amala and sons Naga Chaitanya and Akhil in important roles. Directed by Vikram Kumar, Manam is the story of reincarnation. — IANS

Celebrities mourn death of Telugu filmmaker Bapu IANS, CHENNAI
T
he demise of veteran director, painter and cartoonist, Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana aka Bapu has shocked the entire Telugu film fraternity. Soon after the news of his death in Chennai on August 31, film personalities like Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Mohan Babu, Nagarjuna and several others offered their condolences and some even recounted their experience of working with the legend. Here’s what some of them had to say about Bapu: “Bapu’s demise marks the end of an era in Telugu cinema. I still can’t believe that both Bapu and Ramana are no longer with us and I don’t think anyone can fill the void they have left behind. — Chiranjeevi “I can’t believe that a legend like Bapu is no more with us. He’s the one who taught us how
to paint gods and goddesses and the iconic Bapu Bomma series is spell-binding to say the less. Not just paintings, he was an exceptional filmmaker as well. ” — Mohan Babu “At a time when mythological films had become rare in Telugu cinema, Bapu garu made a film like
35
Sriramarajyam with me and only he could have done a film like that. Every moment I spent with him was a learning experience.” — Balakrishna “Bapu garu will always live with us through his paintings and beautiful movies. God bless. #Bapu Remember spending wonderful times with bapu garu on the Godavari during the making of andala ramudu. May his soul rest in peace (sic)” — Nagarjuna “Deeply saddened on the demise of Bapu Garu. The legacy of his creations will always live on. Our condolences to the family. (Sic)” — Sridevi “Bapu garu mana madya lekapovadam bad luck Bapu Gari athmaki Santhi chekooralani devudini korukundam” — Srikanth “Deeply saddened by the demise of Bapu Garu. A true legend. ” — Pranitha Subhash
Shruti has been paired opposite Vishal in this film which has been directed by Hari. The shooting of the film is almost complete and it’ll be also dubbed in Telugu as Pooja. The film is expected to relesed in October. Meanwhile, Shruti is expected to join the sets of Koratala Siva’s upcoming film, in which she will act opposite Mahesh Babu later this year.
DSP overwhelmed with US response CHENNAI: Southern composer Devi Sri Prasad aka DSP, who has returned to India after a month-long musical tour in different U.S. cities, is extremely touched by the response of his overseas fans to his concerts. "The happiest moment for any musician is performing in front of amazing fans that fill our ears and hearts with reverberating cheering applause. I felt that experience when I had recently toured US for my music concerts. I was stunned when I saw the tremendous reception that people gave for my concerts," he said . DSP took the opportunity and extended his gratitude to all his singers, fans and even actors who were associated with his tour.

Women hooked to texting,
men love Facebook Women may be more inclined to use cell phones for social reasons such as texting or emails to build relationships, says a recent study IANS, NEW YORK
C
ontrary to the traditional view that men are more invested in technology, a new study found that more young women are addicted to cell phones and even get agitated when it is not in sight. Women may be more inclined to use cell phones for social reasons such as texting or emails to build relationships and have deeper conversations. Nearly 60 percent of college students are hooked to cell phones, the study found. “Women college students spend an average of 10 hours a day on their cellphones and men college students spend nearly eight, with excessive use posing potential risks for academic performance,” informed James Roberts from Baylor University’s Hankamer School of Business. How to get a stress-free life? IANS, NEW YORK
W
e all know that deep and meaningful relationships play a vital role in one’s overall well-being but still, most of us are bereft of emotional bonding in life. It is imperative, therefore, to listen to your heart and stay close to those who love you the most. According to an interesting study, close relationships not only support individuals in their ability to cope with stress or adversity but also in their efforts to learn, grow, explore, achieve goals, cultivate new talents and find purpose and meaning in life. “People will be most likely to
thrive with well-functioning, close relationships that serve different support functions - whether the relationship is with friends, parents, siblings, a spouse or mentors,” said researchers Brooke Feeney of Carnegie Mellon University and Nancy Collins from University of California at Santa Barbara. Relationships serve as an important function of not simply helping people return to baseline but help them to thrive by exceeding prior baseline levels of functioning. “We refer to this as source of strength (SOS) support and emphasize that the promotion of thriving through adversity is it’s core purpose,” Feeney explained.
Northeastern cuisine finds growing demand PARVATI TAMPIANS, NEW DELHI
B
e it zesty pork chops from Nagaland or a subtle voksa rep chhum(smoked pork with mustard leaves) from Mizoram combined with some fragrant wild red rice from Manipur, dishes from northeastern India are ample enough to fill your stomach and give you much food for thought. According to Muan Tonsing, the owner of the Delhi-based Rosang Café, northeastern cuisine cannot be classified into a single category. “Most people perceive northeastern food to be momos or noodles. My aim is to change that perception. Another misconception is that our food is very spicy. Again, that varies from dish to dish and taste to taste,” Tonsing said.
“We get some of our vegetables all the way from there, as they are mainly organic with no pesticides added. It adds to the cost of production but when it comes to the taste, nothing beats the authentic flavor of the northeast,” Tonsing asserted. Rosang may have been one of the first private restaurants catering to northeastern food to have opened up in the capital over 10 years ago, but since then multiple eateries have sprung up, Says Ashish Chopra, the author of NE Belly, one of the first cookbooks on northeastern cuisine, the past few years have seen a dramatic change. “I have met people who have wrongly assumed that the food is unhealthy or smelly. Lots of effort is being made to change that mindset and bring this cuisine to the mainstream.”
