Obama tells Americans not to ‘underestimate’ Trump The outgoing President said “thick skin” and “stamina” are important qualities to have when serving as the Commander-in-Chief IANS, WASHINGTON
O
utgoing US President Barack Obama in an interview to CBS on “60 Minutes” programme said that he doesn’t think Donald Trump’s “improvisational” campaign style will work well at the White House level, and warned Americans to not “underestimate the guy”. Obama, in his final interview as the US President, said that he told Trump, and would advise Republicans in Congress and voters, “just to make sure that as we go forward, certain norms, certain institutional traditions don’t get eroded, because there’s a reason they’re in place.” “It had been an ‘unusual’ transition,” said Obama, adding, “I suspect the President-elect would agree with that”. Obama said that Trump is in the process of building up an organization that will support his presidency.
“We’ll have to see how that works,” Obama told “60 Minutes” Steve Kroft. “It will be a test, I think, for him and the people he’s designated to be able to execute on his vision.” “We are moving into an era where a lot of people get their information through tweets and soundbites... There’s a power in that. There’s also a danger — what generates a head-
Obama commutes prison sentence for Manning WASHINGTON: Outgoing President Barack Obama has commuted the majority of the remaining prison sentence of Army whistleblower Chelsea Manning, who was convicted of stealing and disseminating 750,000 pages of documents and videos to WikiLeaks. The President took the decision to free the transgender US Army soldier on May 17 after overruling the objections of Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter. Manning had been sentenced to 35 years in military prison in 2013 for leaking hundreds of thousands of documents to WikiLeaks. The decision by Obama rescued Manning, who twice tried to kill herself last year, from an uncertain future as a transgender woman incarcerated at the men’s military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. She has been jailed for nearly seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction, the New York Times reported. The President also pardoned James Cartwright, the former vice chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, who pleaded guilty in October
last year to the charge of making false statements to federal investigators in 2012. Cartwright was questioned about leaking top secret information on US efforts to cripple Iran’s nuclear programme to two journalists. Cartwright, 67, served 40 years in the US Marine Corps and was widely regarded within the military for his technical acumen and work in the areas of nuclear proliferation, missile defense and cybersecurity. A former intelligence official termed the decision to commute Manning’s sentence as shocking. —IANS

line or stirs up a controversy and gets attention isn’t the same as the process required to actually solve the problem,” Obama said. The outgoing President said “thick skin” and “stamina” are important qualities to have when serving as the Commander-inChief, adding that he believes he is the same person today as he was at the beginning of his tenure.
Obama said “thick skin helps” in getting the complex presidential job done. He also recommended that a US President has to be physically strong enough and must not get distracted by critics in the government and the media. “I think your ability to — not just mentally and emotionally but physically be able to say, ‘We got this. We’re going to be okay’,” is important, said Obama. Obama also said that he is proud that his basic character and outlook did not change during his tenure. “...People who are closest to me will tell you that — the guy who came here is the same guy who’s leaving,” he said of himself. Obama also said he had been “disturbed” about reports over Russia hacking the US election. “I have been concerned about the degree to which, in some circles, you’ve seen people suggest that Putin has more credibility than the US government,” Obama said.
BRIEFS Action to prevent Obamacare repeal WASHINGTON: Democratic leaders joined hundreds of protesters in Los Angeles in rejecting the plan of President-elect Donald Trump and Republican congressmen to repeal the Affordable Care Act, calling upon the public to take action to prevent that move. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told EFE news that everyone will pay the price of killing Obamacare, not just people with low incomes but also people who buy their health insurance in the private sector.
We will set rules: US media tells Trump WASHINGTON: The American Press Corps, White House journalists, in an open letter to Presidentelect Donald Trump has said that it is the reporters and not him who will set the rules and decide what to serve the readers. “It is, after all, our airtime and column inches that you are seeking to influence. We, not you, decide how best to serve our readers, listeners, and viewers. So think of what follows as a backgrounder on what to expect from us over the next four years,” said US journalists in the letter. —IANS
Trump’s comments ‘inappropriate’ IANS, WASHINGTON
U
S Secretary of State John Kerry has slammed President-elect Donald Trump for an interview in which he branded NATO “obsolete” and said Germany had pursued a “catastrophic” policy on refugees. Kerry told CNN that it was “inappropriate” for Trump to “be stepping in to the politics of other countries in a quite direct manner”. Trump’s interview in the Times of London and the German publication Bild had rattled allies. The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it had caused “astonishment and agitation” within NATO. As well as repeating his criticism of NATO, Trump said the German Chancellor Angela Merkel had made a “catastrophic” mistake in accepting one million refugees. He said sanctions on Russia for its annexation of Crimea could be eased in return for a deal to reduce nuclear weapons, and suggested his son-in-law Jared Kushner could lead a Middle East peace effort. In his CNN interview, Kerry defended Merkel as “one of the strongest leaders in Europe” and “most important players with respect to where we are heading”.

Trump had said the German Chancellor Angela Merkel had made a “catastrophic” mistake in accepting one million refugees Trump would have to deal with the consequences of his remarks after his inauguration later this week, Kerry said.
“He’ll have to speak to that — as of Friday, he’s responsible for that relationship,” the Secretary of State said. On Monday, Merkel shrugged off the criticism and said: “We have known what his position is for some time, and my position is also known.” Foreign Minister Steinmeier said he had spoken with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, “who is concerned that Presidentelect Trump regards NATO as obsolete”.

‘World needs India’
CBI goes after AAP
President-elect Donald Trump and me have “agreed to keep building on gains in our strategic partnership,” says Modi IANS, NEW DELHI
T
he world needs India’s sustained rise as much as India needs the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this week but warned “parochial and protectionist attitudes” are threatening globalization goals and “non-state actors” are stoking instability, violence and extremism. He also pitched for a new “open and inclusive” security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region and asked Pakistan to abandon terrorism if it wanted dialogue with India. Modi also said that the relations between India and US are witnessing expansion across the spectrum. “India’s transformation is not separated from its external context. Our economic growth, employment opportunities for our youth, our access to capital, technology, markets and resources and security of our nation are all deeply impacted by developments in the world. But, the reverse is also true. The world needs India’s sustained rise as much as India needs the world,” Modi said while inaugurating the Second Raisina Dialogue, India’s flagship geo-political conference. Noting that self interest alone is “neither in our culture nor in our behavior”, he said that India’s economic and political rise represents a “regional and global opportunity of great significance”. “Our actions and aspirations, capacities and human capital, democracy and demography, and strength and success will continue to

be an anchor for all round regional and global progress,” Modi said. Attacking Pakistan over its support to extremism, Modi said that India alone cannot walk the path of peace and that Pakistan must reciprocate the sentiment in letter and spirit. “A thriving well-connected and integrated neighborhood is my dream... My vision for our neighborhood puts premium on peaceful
and harmonious ties with entire South Asia. That vision had led me to invite leaders of all SAARC nations, including Pakistan, for my swearing in. For this vision, I had also traveled to Lahore. “But, India alone cannot walk the path of peace. It also has to be Pakistan’s journey to make. Pakistan must walk away from terror if it wants to walk towards dialogue with India,” he added.
The Prime Minister pointed out that India has redefined, despite uncertainty and conflict, partnerships with Gulf and West Asia, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Iran. Vis-a-vis China, MOdi said it was “not unnatural” for two large neighboring powers to have “some differences”. “In our engagement with China, as President Xi and I agreed, we have sought to tap the vast area of commercial and business opportunities in the relationship. I see the development of India and China as an unprecedented opportunity, for our two countries and for the whole world,” Modi said. The Prime Minister said that over the past two and a half years, his government has given a strong momentum to India’s engagement with the US, Russia, Japan and other major global powers. On the US, he said he and President-elect Donald Trump have “agreed to keep building on these gains in our strategic partnership”. Modi noted that the world’s multi-polarity, and an increasingly multi-polar Asia, is “a dominant fact today”, and India welcomes it but with “vibrant pools of progress”, rising ambition and festering rivalries are generating “visible stress points” and sought a “transparent, balanced and inclusive” security architecture. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, and former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were also present among the audience.
NEW DELHI: The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and some unnamed state government officials to probe alleged irregularities in the “Talk to AK” campaign. “We have filed a PE against Sisodia and other unknown government officials, as there are allegations of improprieties and violation of extent rules and regulations in award of work pertaining to media campaign ‘Talk to AK’,” a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said. The campaign was an interactive session of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, under which people could reach out to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader through social media. Reacting to the CBI probe, Sisodia said he would be expecting a CBI raid in his office and his home on Thursday morning. “Welcome Modiji to the battlefield. I will be waiting for your CBI at my home and my office tomorrow (Thursday) morning,” he tweeted. Kejriwal also took to Twitter and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has nothing else to do except going after the AAP. “It seems like Modiji has gone mad. There is only one thing left for the Prime Minister of the nation to do — to go after us,” he said.
NEWS DIGEST
Congress demands RBI Governor’s resignation NEW DELHI: The Congress held nation-wide protests against “poor implementation” of demonetization and gheraoed RBI offices in different state capitals demanding restoration of the apex bank’s autonomy and resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel. In Mumbai, several Congress leaders were detained from outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, where they were scheduled to hold demonstrations at the Reserve Bank of India office. But they moved their agitation to the railway station after the Mumbai Police denied them permission to hold protests outside the RBI office.
“We have submitted a memorandum at the RBI’s headquarters in Mumbai. We demand restoration of the RBI’s autonomy,” Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala told reporters. In a memorandum submitted to Governor, Deputy Governors and Central Board of Directors of the RBI, the Congress alleged that RBI’s autonomy and statutory powers have been subjugated and compromised. The protests were held across the country in several cities, helmed by senior Congress leaders. Apart from Mumbai and Delhi the party leaders held protests in Bengaluru and Chennai.
Attach Mallya’s property: Tribunal BENGALURU: The Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) has ordered attachment and recovery of industrialist Vijay Mallya’s properties for defaulting on bank loans by his defunct Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. The Bengaluru bench of the Tribunal said properties of Mallya and Kingfisher worth Rs.6,203 crore plus interest at 11.5 per cent from July 26, 2013 can be recovered by a consortium of banks led by State Bank of India (SBI). “The Tribunal has allowed our petitions against Mallya’s Kingfisher and issued an order to attach their properties for recovering the amount (Rs.6, 203 crore) with interest,” counsel for the consortium told reporters here.
SP-Congress ‘together’ in UP as Akhilesh gets ‘cycle’ NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Setting the stage for a triangular contest in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress has said it will contest the assembly election along with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party. Akhilesh Yadav said in Lucknow there would be an alliance with the Congress for the staggered election starting on February 11. “The Congress-Samajwadi alliance will form the next government in Uttar Pradesh,” Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said in New Delhi, a day after the Election Commission allotted the ‘cycle’ symbol to UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. Azad said the nitty-gritties of the
alliance, particularly seat sharing, was being worked out. Asked if the alliance would include Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Azad declined to comment. “On that (Grand Alliance), I cannot say anything right now. “There has been speculation whether or not this alliance is happening. This is to confirm that it is happening,” he said. According to NDTV, Akhilesh Yadav confirmed that his Samajwadi Party was closing a deal with the Congress and a number of smaller regional parties like the RLD. It said Akhilesh tried convincing his father to agree to an alliance with the Congress for a sweeping win.

Trump shadow on three APAC giants? Trump's foreign policy can bury Quadrilateral Security Dialogue between US, Japan, Australia and India REKHA BHATTACHARJEE, NEW DELHI
W
Experts believe that if pushed too hard by the US, Australia is likely to take a serious look at strengthening its relations with the Asian powerhouse China.
ith Donald Trump set to be inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States on January 20, will his presidency alter India-US-Australia trilateral relations? t is an indisputable fact that the US is a vital strategic ally for Australia. The depth of the collaboration between the two Pacific-rim countries can be seen in various spheres like foreign policy and national security. Australian defense policy is basically driven by the Australia, New Zealand, United States Security Alliance (ANZUS). The ties between the two Englishspeaking democracies have been so strong that Australia is often derided as the Deputy Sheriff of the US in the region. All this could undergo a drastic makeover once Trump takes the presidency of undoubtedly the most powerful country on our planet. If the US significantly downgrades the alliance with Canberra, there is a likelihood that
Australia could move over to seek similar ties with its largest trading partner, China. If this happens, India’s burgeoning diplomatic and trade ties with Australia could also come under severe strain. In a worst-case scenario, there is a possibility that a
Depth of collaboration between the US and Australia can be seen in spheres like foreign policy and national security Trump presidency can negatively impact the supply of uranium by Australia to India. Similarly, various multilateral dialogues involving Australia, India and the US could also be scrapped or downgraded. It would be relevant to mention that the upswing in the Indo-Australian bilateral ties can be traced to the early 2000s when policymakers looking to maintain US dominance in Asia started considering India as a potential counter-weight to China.
If the leaked US diplomatic cables (published by WikiLeaks) are to be believed, the US cajoled Prime Minister John Howard to change Australia’s hard stance on India. The push came after President George Bush and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee signed what is known as the Next Steps in Strategic Partnership (NSSP) agreement in 2004. In March 2006, Howard signed six bilateral agreements in India, including a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation. Foreign affairs experts believe that if pushed too hard by the US, Australia is likely to take a serious look at strengthening its relations with China. There is already pressure from the Australian business community on Canberra to move away from the US-centric foreign, defense and trade policies. Trump’s foreign policy can bury the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) which was started as an informal strategic dialogue between the US, Japan, Australia and India in 2007, along with having a negative impact on the high-level trilateral dialogue between India, Japan and Australia.
Punjab polls: Will ‘Rahu kaal’ end for Congress? While Congress has Amrinder Singh, a veteran of many battles, the party’s disadvantage remains its central leadership Rahul Gandhi, not giving an impression of a mature and responsible leader AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
lthough two opinion polls have given different findings about which party will in Punjab, conventional wisdom is that the ruling Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine will have a hard time overcoming the anti-incumbency factor. The reason is, first, the drug problem due to which a sizable section of the youth has fallen victim. Moreover, not only has the Parkash Singh Badal government failed to act effectively to check the menace, there are suspicions too about the clandestine involvement of highups in the government, including a minister, in the narcotics trade. nephew, Manpreet Singh Badal, who is now in the Congress after having been expelled from the Akali Dal for making the charge. Thirdly, there is said to be an element of disquiet outside the Akali Dal’s core group of rural supporters about the Badal government’s conversion into a family enterprise
with Prakash Singh Badal’s son, Sukhbir Singh Badal, assuming the Deputy Chief Minister’s post. There is little doubt that if the Akalis win, Sukhbir Singh Badal will be the Chief Minister, replacing his 89-year-old father. At one time, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) was expected to be the
main gainer if only because it unexpectedly won four out of the 13 parliamentary seats in the 2014 general elections with 24.4 percent votes, next only to the Akali Dal, which also won four seats with 26.3 percent votes. But the AAP leaders then still had the reputation of being knights
in shining armour, ready to cleanse the system of sleaze and provide a government close to the hearts of the people. However, that image has been dented to a considerable extent by its indifferent performance in Delhi and constant tiffs with the Centre and the Lt. Governor, with the result that few expect it to score an outright victory in Punjab. Congress has Amrinder Singh a veteran of many battles with a “born to rule” image because of his “royal” lineage. However, the party’s disadvantage remains its central leadership and especially Rahul Gandhi, who does not give the impression of being a hands-on, mature and responsible leader. His equations with Amrinder Singh are far from being warm presumably because the scion of the “royal” family of Patiala once said that the crown prince of the NehruGandhi dynasty lacks experience.

he inauguration of Donald Trump as 45th President of the United States was marred by booing at the mention of immigrants during a speech, media reports said. The address by Chuck Schumer, a Democratic member of the Senate Inauguration Committee, included a statement that immigrants and “native born” Americans are equal which was greeted with a chorus of boos, reported The Independent. Schumer said: “We Americans have always been a forward-looking, problem-solving, optimistic, patriotic and decent people. “Whatever our race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, whether we are immigrant or native born, whether we live with disabilities or do not, in wealth or poverty, we are all exceptional in our commonly-held yet fierce devotion to our country.” The crowds of people at the inauguration included thousands of Trump supporters who gathered in Washington DC to see the Republican sworn in. Speaking last year, he said: “We have some bad hombres, and we’re going to get them out”. The Republican re-iterated the pledge after his victory against Hillary Clinton in November, although with a significantly lower estimate of how many people will be deported. He told CBS News his administration would focus on border security and deporting “probably two million [or] even three million” undocumented migrants with criminal convictions, The Independent said. ndia-US ties are on a solid upper trajectory and the incoming Donald Trump administration will find the relationship on a very solid footing, departing US Ambassador to India Richard Verma has said. Verma, who presented his credentials in Rashtrapati Bhavan in January 2015, told Karan Thapar in an interview telecast on India Today TV that his tenure saw two of the best years in India-US ties and the credit for this went to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and outgoing US President Barack Obama. “We are on a now solid upper trajectory,” he said. He pointed out that Modi and Obama met nine times, had three summit-level meetings, and the two sides had over 100 government-to-government meetings. According to the Ambassador, defense cooperation between the two countries have gone beyond buyer-seller relationship and there is now a special cell in the Pentagon that solely looks at defense technology with India. He also mentioned the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (Lemoa) signed by the two countries last year and said that

Hassan Rouhani said at a press conference here that renegotiating the deal with Donald Trump’s incoming administration was out of the question, Efe news reported. “We cannot reverse a deal whose signature required years of negotiations, article by article and word for word,” Rouhani said. He added that he believed Trump’s critical views on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) would not have much impact because it was not a bilateral agreement between Iran and the USA, but rather a multilateral one between several parties. Trump has repeatedly lambasted the deal, while his appointee to lead the State Department, Rex Tillerson, said last week that the deal needed to undergo a “full review.” This stance heavily contradicts the views of the plan’s other signatories,

Westinghouse has already made a commercial offer last year to make nuclear power plants in India. He also said that counter-terrorism operations formed a key part of India-US ties. Regarding Pakistan’s state sponsorship of terrorism, the Ambassador said “we have taken a very strong line”. As for India-Pakistan ties, he said the US wanted the two South Asian neighbors to solve their
problems. Regarding the fate of India-US ties with the Trump administration taking over, he said “we are putting our relationship on very strong footing for the new administration”. WASHINGTON: New wax figurines of US President-elect Donald Trump have been unveiled at Madame Tussauds locations around the globe. Trump already had a wax figure, which was completed in 1997. The current version is an update to the original, Fox News Insider reported. According to Madame Tussauds Washington, the finished figure took 20 artists six months to create, the hairstyle alone took five weeks, with each hair — made from yak hair — being individually inserted. Locations in Washington, New York City, London and Orlando, Florida, received the new wax statues dressed in a navy suit, red tie and American flag lapel pin. he road to make America great again - as the US President-elect Donald Trump promised during his election campaign - passes through Beijing, an American expert on US-China dynamics said here. Michael Pillsbury, a consultant with the US Defense Department and formerly Senior Research Advisor at US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said that there are multiple areas where the Trump administration can seek cooperation and avoid confrontation with Beijing. “Chinese visitors say Trump should seek to make both China and America great again. will suffer, there will be no stable global order,” Pillsbury said at the second Raisina Dialogue here. He said that as world’s second largest economic superpower, China “holds the key to boosting American growth”. “Indeed, China can help us cre-
ate jobs, stimulate investment and drive growth. But it requires ending China’s unfair trade practices and making trade compromises,” Pillsbury said. He argued that Trump can stand up to China without sparking war. “Trump has admired China’s negotiating skills, and has said that his best bet would be to appear ‘unpredictable’ to the Chinese. In this, he has richly succeeded so far. His tweets have created a flutter in the Chinese state media,” Pillsbury said, contending that because of the “unpredictability” of the incoming administration, there is a possibility that China may make “once unthinkable” concessions by eliminating its unfair trade practices and reducing America’s trade deficit. “President Xi has already claimed he opposes protectionism by any nation. And so does Donald Trump,” he said.

Tamil Nadu’s ‘Arab Spring’ Rejecting the Chief Minister’s appeal to end the protest, thousands of youth rallied at the Marina beach to continue their protest in support of Jallikattu in Chennai IANS, CHENNAI
T
amil Nadu experienced a sort of ‘Arab Spring’ as thousands of youth rallied at the Marina beach here for the second day and were all set to continue their protest in support of Jallikattu. They rejected Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam’s appeal to end the mass protest. He promised to personally press Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue an ordinance to allow Jallikattu, the bulltaming sport banned by the Supreme Court. He assured the crowds of student and youths stationed at the beach that his government will take all steps to hold the traditional sport. But the appeal fell on deaf ears. The peaceful protestors at the Marina beach blocked the road for some time, forcing the police to do a mild baton charge to disperse them. Protestors comprised mostly members of various social media groups though it is also said that some non-governmental organizations (NGO) are extending silent support to the protests. The Marina turned into a sea of humanity as several thousand young
men and women demanded not only an end to the ban on Jallikattu but also a ban on People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, which opposes the sport. The common complaint among the protest leaders was that the Supreme Court had insulted the Tamil culture by disallowing the animal sport that coincides with the just-ended Pongal festival. Support for the protesters grew, as students of SRM University here announced protest outside their institution. Similar protests have been reported at other places in Tamil Nadu. Lawyers in Namakkal district announced a boycott of courts. Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan claimed some organizations too are involved in the protests apart from bona fide students. Speaking to the media, some protestors voiced the demand for Jallikattu and also spoke against the central government and liberalization of economy. They also demanded a ban on some multinational company products. In Jallikattu, a bull vaulter is expected to hang on to the animal’s hump for a stipulated distance or for a minimum of three

Panneerselvam meets Modi amid protests NEW DELHI: Amid massive protests in support of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to promulgate an ordinance enabling the holding of the popular bull-taming sport. Modi while assuring support, pointed out that the matter is sub-judice. Panneerselvam was in the national capital to meet the Prime Minister. “The ban imposed on Jallikattu by the Supreme Court came up for dis-
jumps by the bull. At the Marina, thousands braved hot weather conditions and initially found getting food difficult. But as appeals for food were posted on social media, food packets started arriving along with volunteers. “I have made several trips to the beach with food packets. We serve around 2,500 idilis per trip,” a volunteer said. Supply of water too was ensured throughout the day. Employees of information technology companies came out of their offices in solidarity with the protest-
cussion. While appreciating the cultural significance of Jallikattu, the Prime Minister observed that the matter is presently sub-judice,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a series of tweets. “The Centre would be supportive of steps taken by the State Government,” it added. Panneerselvam said steps will be taken soon. “I have asked Prime Minister to promulgate an emergency ordinance

Hundreds of college students and others sat through the night at the Marina beach after talks with two state ministers failed. After police disconnected power supply to the beach, the young crowd used mobile phone lights at night. DMK Working President and opposition leader M.K. Stalin urged
allowing Jallikattu,” he told reporters after meeting the Prime Minister. “The state government will take necessary action in coordination with the central government to hold Jallikattu. The state government’s action in relation with Jallikattu would soon be seen. “The Prime Minister said the central government will support the state government’s action on Jallikattu as there is a case pending in the court,” he added.
Chief Minister Panneerselvam to meet the demonstrators and take immediate action for holding Jallikattu. The protesters got a boost when popular actor Vijay lent his support. “Law was not created to rob people of their tradition and rights but to protect it,” he said in a message. “Jallikattu is every Tamilian’s identity. Those who are protesting against the ban on Jallikattu are united by the feeling that they are Tamilians but not out of compulsion or political pressure.

ctress Avantika Mishra, who is set for her Tamil film debut with an upcoming yet-untitled project with Ashok Selvan, says acting happened out of the blue and it took time for her to fall in love with cinema. Having made her acting debut in 2014 Telugu psychological thriller Maaya, Avantika has just done one more film since then. “I was in third year of college when I signed Maaya, and it hap-
signed in less than two months. Last December, she signed the Tamil remake of Queen. Asked if she no longer wants to be part of commercial films, Tamannaah said: “Even Queen and Pelli Choopulu are commercial films in my opinion. Both these films were watched by a large number of people. If you don’t call that commercial, then I don’t know what is.” Currently, the actress is shooting for Tamil actioner Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan. —IANS

By the time I realized I enjoy being part of cinema, I wanted to be sure of the projects I sign,” Avantika told IANS. Excited about her Tamil debut, she said: “I’m kicking off New Year with work in a new industry. It can’t get any better than this. It’s a romantic-comedy and I play a lovely character.” To be directed by debutant Balaji, the film will have music by Nivas Prasanna.

ollywood actor Salman Khan was acquitted by a court here in an Arms Act case in which he is alleged to have killed blackbucks in 1998. Chief Judicial Magistrate Dalpat Singh Rajpurohit, after completing the hearing on January 9 in the case, had reserved the judgement for January 18. Salman Khan and his sister Alvira were present in the court when it announced the actor not guilty. Salman Khan and a few other Bollywood actors were accused of poaching blackbucks on the night of October 1, 1998 during the shooting of Hindi movie Hum Saath Saath Hain.

The actor was also accused of carrying and using illegal arms. A case under the Arms Act was registered against him. Police had a
hard time controlling the actor’s supporters in the court premises. Many carried the actor’s pictures. The Rajasthan High Court in July last year had acquitted Salman Khan in another case, also related to the chinkara poaching. Salman Khan had moved the Jodhpur bench of the High Court, challenging a lower court verdict handing him a one and a five-year term in two separate cases of poaching. He was held guilty by the lower court and sentenced in 2006. Salman Khan and the state government challenged the lower court verdict on various grounds. The Rajasthan government filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against the actor’s acquittal.

he is 15, going on 18. Or so she claims when the local female doctor examines her for missing her period. At her age, she should be only thinking of the periods that she must not miss when the bell rings. But no. Sandhya is about to be seduced by her sleazy teacher. In what perhaps ranks as the most below-the-belt male protago-
nist in recent times, Siddiqui is cast as a small-town school teacher with a serious hormonal imbalance and
a disgusting lack of moral grounding. While he has a very fulfilling physical relationship with his wife
Sunita (Trimala Adhikari) at home, he inches his way up the salwar (there is no polite way of putting this) of his student, Sandhya (Shweta). A mere child, if you look at it with dispassionate eyes. And that’s how debutant director Shlok Sharma wants us to look at Shweta Tripathi. See Haraamkhor for its original and audacious content and for the way the debutant director extracts a gush of empathy from these bored characters even during their worst moments. — Subhash K. Jha

Illegal cigarette packs found at 3 NY stores BY A STAFF WRITER TATEN ISLAND, NY -- The city wants to shut down three Staten Island delis after the police found hundreds of packs of untaxed cigarettes for sale inside. The Old Town Deli and Grocery in Old Town, Zenia Deli in West Brighton and VIP V&G Corp. in Castleton Corners could be shuttered after the police bought packs of untaxed cigarettes inside and arrested four people over the summer. The NYPD filed separate documents in Staten Island Supreme Court earlier this month to close each deli for at least a year under the nuisance abatement law. From June until July 2016, undercover officers and informants bought packs of
S
Newport cigarettes from the stores that either had no stamps or ones from Virginia on them. The police then executed search warrants on each of the spots, confiscated cigarettes from the stores and arrested workers. On July 13, officers executed a search warrant at VIP V&G, at 2003 Victory Blvd., and found more than 150 packs of untaxed cigarettes inside.
The police arrested Salim Khalfaoui, 43, and charged him with possession or sale of unstamped cigarettes. That same day, officers carried out a search of Zenia Deli, at 416 Forest Ave., and found 62 packs of untaxed cigarettes inside. Sayed Salahuddin, 57, was arrested and charged with possession or selling of unstamped cigarettes. The police had their biggest bust on September 6 when they found more than 300 packs of untaxed cigarettes inside the OldTown Deli at 203 OldTown Road. Salah Al Lahabi, 28, and Sheib Al Zawquari, 24, were both arrested and charged with two counts of possession or sale of unstamped cigarettes, a spokeswoman for the NYPD said.

Changes in U.S Immigration Laws and Its Impact on India BY ANU PESHAWARIA hile the United States Presidential election related activities were on peak last month, even in the midst of my busy schedule in my law firm at the United States of America, I have been closely watching Trump’s statements on immigration. Trump continues to make headlines with each of his statements being highlighted as a matter of ‘grave concern’ especially for developing countries such as India. This is quite natural given the fact that a very large population from our country migrates to the United States for business, family and employment related purposes ever year, thanks to the opportunities the U.S has always been offering. Though I am not a ‘crystal-ball gazer’ but being in the field of US Immigration law for nearing 35 years I am able to foresee to which direction, the ‘action’ is moving. Also, as an Indo-American, I deem it my duty to share with my fellow Indians my views on a few important points to help them to make an informed decision To start with, I think, some of the most important questions our people need to carefully consider today when they think of ‘immigrating’ to the U.S are: What is the existing immigration law (under the Obama administration)? What is Trump’s stand on immigration? What does this hold for India? What can India do for its citizens to ensure that their transition to the U.S is hassle free? Under the Immigration Nationality Act of 1952, the President of the United States has the authority to prohibit admission for “any class of aliens” in to the country that is considered to be “detrimental to the interest of the United States” for any period of time. For enabling the President to ensure this, the federal law gives him broad authority to enforce immigration law as well as regulatory leeway in the form of policy recommendations and executive actions. The biggest fear India has is related to the curtailment of the H-1B program which allows 65,000 workers a year mostly used by Indian software engineers to work in the US. While Trump would need an act of Congress to substantially raise the qualification standard for an H-1B visa or to lower the annual cap for the same, he could use his executive power to tighten up rules or pass new laws such as the recent bill to raise the minimum wages and remove the masters degree cap to make the process more painful for the visa applicants. What we need to understand here is that, over the years, there has been considerable misuse of loopholes in this (H-1B visa) program, and hence the President is at total liberty to plug those loopholes. However, if the President enforces law to the extent that shuts down immigration completely, the American people and the U.S economy is going to suffer; hence, this is unlikely to
happen. It is evident that Trump is certainly going to step up investigation of programs such as H-1B of which India is the highest beneficiary, and is therefore very likely to ban more employers who have violated H-1B rules as part of the process. It is going to be a hard political argument to make that Indian immigrants are being discriminated on the H-1B policy. In this context, what is of utmost importance for Indian companies in the U.S is to strictly follow the immigration rules. And my humble recommendation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be to continue his dialogues with the American government on other issues such as the totalization treaties and the 50 / 50 rule which raises the fees for those companies who have more than 50 Employees as that is where they could strike a deal. An important point worth noting here is that the Trump administration has not yet commented on the EB-5 program (An investment program that assures an investor and his family green cards if made an investment of $500,000 in the country, however right now valid only till April 2017) Hence the EB-5 stakeholders, though they feel that there may be a tougher stand in some aspects of the immigration program, are very confident of the continuance of this (EB-5) particular program. Is confidence stems from their belief that the President will think twice about turning his back on a program that has been proven to create and support jobs around the country. Note that according to IIUSA, between FY2010 to FY2013, the EB-5 program supported 19,395 and 17,161 jobs in California and New York respectively. Overall, during that period, the program supported an average of 29,300 jobs each year. There is a new bill proposed by Trump Sarkar to raise the minimum investment from April 2017 hence the rush in new applications. In addition to this, there exists programs such as L1-A (Intra-company transfer from overseas company to the U.S) are still open for India and have no quota restrictions and can go very far in establishing your business and immigrating successfully with very little investment. As expected, there is a clash within republicans (the business and populist wings of the party) over the nation’s system of legal immigration. This battle could prove to be as divisive as the fight over illegal immigrants. As we know, illegal and legal immigration are two different things.

W deportation, similar to that provided by DACA. Employment authorization would be granted after recipients pay a fee and pass stringent background checks. While this legislation is lauded, the BRIDGE Act does not provide a solution for the millions of families and individuals who have lived in the US for years, working and contributing to economy, and who still do not have a way to legalize their statuses and step out of the shadows. Jarecki stated: “We sincerely hope President-elect Trump will continue to signal his support to find a viable solution to protect DACA recipients from deportation. Studies have shown that revoking DACA for the hundreds of thousands of current grantees would cost America more than $430 billion over ten years and an annual loss of over $2 billion to the state of Illinois. “DACA enjoys widespread support in the business, higher education, and religious communities, and is supported by the vast majority of Americans.”

Sikhs join inter-faith prayers for migrants
BY A STAFF WRITER CHICAGO, IL -- More than 200 Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews and Sikhs gathered on January 15 at St. Viator Church in Chicago to pray for migrants and comprehensive immigration reform. Rajinder Singh Mago represented Sikh Religious Society, Palatine, Illinois and participated in their circle of love for humanity, and rendered Sikh prayers for the event closing ceremony . The interfaith prayer service was sponsored by Sisters & Brothers of Immigrants, a Catholic group advocating for immigrant rights that called together people of several faiths to join in prayer on International Day of the Migrant, a day designated by Pope Francis. “On this 10th anniversary of the founding of Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants, we stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of all nations, no
matter what their status, race, ethnicity or faith tradition. “In our interdependent globalized world, we recommit ourselves to reform

Pakistani man pleads guilty: drug pushing BY A STAFF WRITER ROOKLYN, NY- A Pakistani man from Brooklyn, N.Y., pleaded guilty in a California court to charges he distributed heroin through a “dark web marketplace.” Chaudhry Ahmad Farooq, 24, of Brooklyn, New York, pleaded guilty on January 17 to one count of conspiring to distribute heroin from November 2015 to August 2016, with his co-defendant Abdullah Almashwali, a man of Yemeni descent, on AlphaNBay. Dark web marketplaces are operated on computer networks designed to conceal the true Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computers accessing the network. Farooq is scheduled to be sentenced by US District Judge for the Eastern District of California, Dale A. Drozd on May 17.
B
Farooq faces a maximum statutory penalty
of 20 years in prison and a $1-million fine.
According to court documents, Farooq operated under the moniker “DarkApollo,” and distributed more than 600 grams of heroin in exchange for more than $145,000 in Bitcoin, according to a press release from the US Attorney for the Eastern District of California. Dark web marketplaces allow for payments to be made only in the form of digital currency, most commonly Bitcoin. Online transactions in digital currency can be completed without a third-party payment processor and are therefore perceived to be more anonymous. Both Farooq and Almashwali are in federal custody. They were indicted in August 2016. Almashwali is scheduled for trial on April 18. So far the charges against him are only allegations and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

‘Captain’ Kohli wins his first ODI Chasing a difficult 351-run target, Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav added 200 runs between them IANS, PUNE
V
irat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav slammed quickfire centuries to steer India to a three-wicket victory over England in the first One-Day International at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here this week. Chasing a difficult 351-run target, the hosts were tottering at 63/4 when the duo came together to add 200 runs between them in 24.3 overs. India now lead the three-match series 1-0. Kohli, who thus enjoyed a victorious start to his stint as India’s limited-overs captain, plundered 122 runs over 105 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and five sixes. Jadhav smashed 120 runs over a whirlwind 76-ball innings that included 12 boundaries and four sixes. He fell to pacer Jake Ball while attempting another big hit. Hardik Pandya then scored an unbeaten 40 off 37 balls to ensure that India crossed the line with three wickets and 1.5 overs to spare. Jake Ball was the most successful among the England bowlers with figures of 3/67 while fellow pacers David Willey and Ben Stokes returned 2/47 and 2/73 respectively. Chasing a difficult target, the hosts were off to a poor start with the England pacers striking early blows. The perennially underperforming Shikhar Dhawan was the first
India aim to wrap up ODI series in second tie CUTTACK: After guiding India to a thrilling three-wicket win against England in his maiden One-day International (ODI) as full-time skipper, Virat Kohli will be aiming to clinch the three-match series by grabbing the second ODI too here. Kohli and wicketkeeper-batsman Kedar Jadhav smashed brilliant centuries to forge a 200-run fifth-wicket stand and helped the hosts chase down the stiff 351-run target with 11 balls to spare in the first match in Pune on Sunday. The toss could also be a crucial factor in deciding the outcome of the match, given the dew factor at this time of the year and both the captains will be looking to bat second. Though India got over the line in the first ODI despite 63 for 4 at one stage, thanks to Kohli and Jadhav’s

heroics, the men-in-blue will be hoping to get a good start from their opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul. Comeback man Yuvraj Singh and former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will also need to step up and give Kohli company in the middle order while Jadhav and all-rounder Hardik Pandya are already in good nick. In the bowling department, India will be hoping for an improved performance from premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who went wicketless and leaked 63 runs from his 8 overs in the match. Pacers Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Pandya have done a decent job while left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja was also amongst the wickettakers in the first game.
produced 15 runs. But he was done in by a poor piece of shot selection, edging a Stokes delivery which was sailing down the leg side to England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. Ball clinched the coveted wicket of Mahendra Singh Dhoni when the former India captain misjudged the bounce of a shortpitched delivery while attempting

a pull. The ball took the upper edge and lobbed up for an easy catch to Willey at midwicket as the hosts lost almost their entire top order by the 12th over. But with the Indians seemingly tottering their way towards defeat, Kohli and Jadhav turned the tide with their dominant batting. Following the duo’s departure, Pandya finished off the chase with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin providing excellent support at the other end. Ashwin finished things off in style with a six off Ali in the penultimate over. Earlier, half-centuries by Jason Roy (73) and Joe Root (78) helped
England post a mammoth 350 for seven in 50 overs against India in their first One-Day International (ODI) match at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday. Besides Roy and Root, allrounder Ben strokes (61) and wicket-keeper Jos Buttler also produced fine knocks and contributed handsomely to the visitors’ cause. Put in to bat, England started the proceedings on a cautious note as both openers Roy and Alex Hales (9) were playing the ball to its merit. Just when things seemed good for the visitors, India bounced back in style to sent back Hales.

I LONDON: The risk of death by cardiovascular diseases due to depression may be just as great as that posed by high cholesterol levels and obesity, said a study . Worldwide, 350 million people are affected by depression, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Our study shows that the risk of a fatal cardiovascular disease due to depression is almost as great as that due to elevated cholesterol levels or obesity,” said Karl-Heinz Ladwig, who is a professor at Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Germany. Depression accounted for nearly 15 per cent of the cardiovascular deaths. “That is comparable to the other risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, obesity and smoking,” Ladwig said, noting that these factors cause 8.4 to 21.4 percent of the cardiovascular deaths.
