‘I told Putin to stop hacking’

Mr. Putin can weaken us just like he is trying to weaken Europe if we start buying into notions that it is okay to intimidate the press or lock up dissidents, Obama warned IANS, WASHINGTON

O

utgoing US President Barack Obama asserted that a September confrontation with his Russian counterpart prompted Moscow to cease its hacking of the US election. During a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in China, CNN quoted Obama as saying that he insisted President Vladimir Putin to “cut it out” and told him “there were going to be serious consequences if he didn’t”. “In fact we did not see further tampering of the election process,” Obama said at a year-end news conference. “But the leaks through WikiLeaks had already occurred.” He unleashed a string of putdowns, describing America’s Cold War adversary as “a smaller country, they are a weaker country. Their economy doesn’t produce anything anyone wants to buy except oil and gas and arms. They don’t innovate”. Obama attacked Republicans for siding with an arch-enemy of the United States because of their dislike of Democrats. “Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave,” Obama said of recent GOP praise of Russia. He warned, “Mr. Putin can weaken us just like he is trying to weaken Europe if we start buying into notions that it is okay to

‘No Hillary for 2020 elections’ WASHINGTON: A majority of Democratic and independent voters made clear that they do not foresee Hillary Clinton in their 2020 vision of the presidential election, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll. According to the poll released on Wednesday, 62 per cent of Democrats and independents surveyed said the twice-failed presidential candidate should not mount another campaign in 2020, and only 23 per cent would be excited by her campaign, Politico reported. The two people they would most like to see are two of the most prominent Democratic-aligned politicians unlikely to seek the White House in 2020: Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden. Forty-four per cent and 43 per cent of those voters, respectively, said they would be excited to see Sanders and Biden run. —IANS

intimidate the press or lock up dissidents.” Asked if Putin was personally implicated in approving in the election hacks, Obama described an apparatus tightly controlled by the man at the top. “Not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin,” he said. “This happened at the highest levels of the Russian government.” In terms of the relationship between his White House and the incoming Trump administration, Obama said there was no “squab-

bling” between them even amid a debate over Russia’s intrusion into the US election, CNN reported. The President noted he had made “some pretty specific suggestions” to successor Donald Trump about “maintaining the effectiveness, integrity, cohesion of the office”. He has listened,” CNN quoted Obama as saying. “I can’t say that he will end up implementing, but the conversations themselves have been cordial as opposed to defensive in any way.” He said the issue

of Russia hacks should be confronted on a bipartisan basis. “What we have simply said are the facts,” Obama said. “Based on uniform intelligence assessments, the Russians were responsible for hacking the DNC, and as a consequence, it is important for us to review all elements of that and make sure we are preventing that kind of interference through cyberattacks in the future.” “That shouldn’t be a partisan issue,” Obama went on. “My hope is the President-elect is similarly

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama has permanently banned offshore drilling in areas of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. According to the White House, Obama’s move, that he took this week, will prevent future leasing of certain offshore areas for oil rights, CNN reported. His successor, Donald Trump, who has promised a policy allowing more US energy production, would face legal challenges if he attempted to reverse Obama’s order. The White House said Obama was declaring the entire US portion of the Chukchi Sea and the vast majority of the Beaufort Sea “indefinitely off limits for future oil and gas leasing”, citing critical protection for the marine mammals, ecological resources and native populations. Canada also announced on Tuesday that it will freeze its offshore oil and gas exploration in its —IANS Arctic waters.

U

S President-elect Donald Trump has surpassed the necessary 270 votes in the Electoral College, the next step in the official process to become President. Trump received 304 electoral votes to Hillary Clinton’s 224. Six “faithless” electors voted for other candidates, costing Trump two votes and Clinton four, CNN reported this week. Hawaii’s electors are still set to meet later Monday, with the state’s four votes expected to go to Clinton. The results mean Trump — who lost the popular vote by more than 2 percentage points to Clinton — easily staved off a long-shot bid by opponents to turn Republican electors against him. The Electoral College results will be officially certified January 6

during a joint session of Congress. “This election represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible. With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead,” Trump said in a statement.

partisan Cook Political Report showed that all of the 50 US states plus the Washington District of Columbia, the capital city of the US, had certified their vote count results, Xinhua reported. The former secretary of state garnered 65,844,610 votes and 48.2 per cent, compared to Trump’s 62,979,636 votes and 46.6 per cent. Their gap in popular vote is 2,864,974, its data showed. Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson, Green Party Candidate Jill Stein and all write-ins altogether, took 7,804,213 popular votes and 5.7 per cent. Although Clinton captured nearly as many votes as President Barack Obama did to win in 2012, she lost the electoral college by a wide margin. Trump officially secured his future four-year presidency by winning 304 Electoral College votes to Clinton’s 227.

Modi mocks at Rahul’s charges Citing Income Tax documents, the Congress Vice President alleged that Modi had taken kickbacks from corporate houses when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat IANS, VARANASI/BAHRAICH

day after Rahul Gandhi hurled corruption charges, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made fun of him, asking where was the “earthquake” the Congress leader had threatened. “There is a youth leader in the Congress who has just learnt to speak. I am glad he has started to speak now,” the Prime Minister said at an event at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), triggering loud cheers. “In 2009, it was very difficult to find out what was inside this packet. Good he has started speaking. And there was no possibility of any earthquake. “Had he not spoken, the county would have faced a big earthquake. And the country could not have recovered for 10 years,” Modi said

RBI partially withdraws one-time deposit norm after public anger NEW DELHI: In a sharp U-turn, the RBI on Wednesday partially withdrew its order barring people with KYCcompliant bank accounts from depositing over Rs 5,000 in old currency more than once until December 30 after a massive public outrage and criticism by the opposition. But the December 19 notification stands for bank accounts which are non-KYC — meaning for those account holders who have not submitted their PAN card number and other details. The upper limit of Rs 50,000 also stays for non-KYC bank accounts, the Reserve Bank of India said. The flip-flop, the Congress said,

made the RBI “Reverse Bank of India” with the CPI-M alleging that the government was operating whimsically over its November 8 decision to recall 86 per cent — in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes -— of the total currency in circulation. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) emphasized that confusing rules meant that the government had lost control over banks.

Thursday, Gandhi again targeted the Prime Minister, asking him to explain if he indulged in corruption or not. “Make as much fun of me as you like... but answer my question,” Gandhi said. “Did you indulge in corruption

or not?” The BJP earlier denied the allegation, terming it as an attempt to divert attention from the AgustaWestland probe in which the names of Congress leaders and the “family” were surfacing, while Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal sought a Supreme Court-monitored probe and the Congress said Modi should get a fair probe undertaken into the charge. Gandhi on Thursday also said that the decision to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was not meant to be a battle against corruption or black money but was aimed at derailing the country’s poor. “Modiji said thieves are standing in queues (to deposit old currency). I saw 100-200 people outside a bank. They were not thieves, they were the poor people of India. “I did not see a single rich person in the line. There was not one person in suit-boot,” he said.

elhi’s Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, who was locked in a running battle with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Thursday resigned and said he will return to academics, “my first love”. In a brief statement, Jung, 66, thanked both Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kejriwal for their association with him. “He thanks the Prime Minister for all help and cooperation he received during his tenure as the Lt. Governor,” the statement said. Jung became the Lt Governor on July 9, 2013 when a Congress-led coalition was in office.

ACB files chargesheet against ‘No interim relief to Mistry from NCLT’ DCW chief in recruitment scam 242 of the Companies Act. IANS, MUMBAI

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch on Wednesday filed a chargesheet against DCW chief Swati Maliwal in an alleged case of irregularities in the appointments to the women’s rights panel. Maliwal, however, denied the charges and said the action was taken to put pres-

sure on her not to investigate cases against leaders of a political party. ACB Chief Mukesh Kumar Meena told reporters that chargesheet was filed against Maliwal as she had made illegal appointments favoring Aam Aadmi Party workers. He also said that the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has violated several rules and Maliwal was charged with a major violation. “Whoever has done wrong in it will also be booked, we have only chargesheeted Swati Maliwal for gross violation of rules,” the ACB Chief said.

ata Sons on Thursday said the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has not granted any interim relief to its ousted Chairman Cyrus Mistry. “The National Company Law Tribunal today (Thursday) did not grant any interim reliefs,” Tata Sons said in a statement. “The parties have been directed to file replies and rejoinders in a fixed time table in January, 2017. The court also ordered the petitioner (Mistry) not to seek for any further interim reliefs in the subject matter.”

Cyrus Mistry

On Tuesday, Tata Sons had been served with a petition filed before the NCLT by Mistry’s investment companies under Sections 241 and

According to the holding company of the industrial conglomerate Tata Group, the petition is ‘not maintainable in law’ and the court will hear Tata Sons on this issue at the next hearing. The development comes a few days after Mistry had stepped down from positions held by him in Tata Group companies which have called extra-ordinary general meetings (EGMs) to remove him from their respective Boards. Tata Sons’ board had ousted Mistry on October 24 and appointed Ratan Tata as interim Chairman.

n this ancient city that is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, development and stink literally go hand-inhand — the latter in spite of the ambitious Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, or Clean India Mission, having been launched here more than two years ago. As you walk down the markets and bathing stairways of this temple-dotted city along the Ganges, a river revered by Hindus, the garbage strewn all around raises an almighty stink. A cluster of cows and bulls squatting in the middle of the roads poses a threat to passersby and commuters. “Benaras (as Varanasi was earlier known) has a rich, grand cultural heritage but it’s literally stinking. You can see garbage even in the city’s upscale areas,” Smith Williams, a tourist from the US, told IANS. He also said that vehicular and industrial pollution is alarmingly high. “It’s amazing to see the people here are literally gasping for breath.” His wife Emily said stray Garbage litter on a bathing ‘ghat’ of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh along the Ganges, a river sacred to the majority of Hindus. animals, especially cows and dogs, were a nuisance in the city’s lanes — and pointed to a herd of cows standing around aimlessly. Varanasi, also known as Kashi, rightly described by historian Mark Twain as being older than history, older than tradition and older than even legend, attracts a significant number of foreign tourists, apart from the ones within the country. They are mainly from China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam who travel to cover the SarnathGaya-Varanasi Buddhist circuit.

The Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath, about 15 km from here. Another area of concern is toxic particulate pollution that has resulted in an eight-fold increase in respiratory diseases among children in the past decade, according to a new report, “Varanasi Chokes”. Corroborating observations from private doctors, it blames abnormally high air pollution levels — that spiked five times higher than the average this winter for several days — for the rise in asthma cases. On the flip side, local taxi operator Suresh Dubey echoed many citizens in saying that Modi has contributed a lot in developing the city’s basic infrastructure like the ongoing construction of a four-lane highway, along with linking this city with the capital of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow. “The Lucknow-Varanasi highway, with an almost fourkm-long flyover at the entrance of this city will definitely help ease the traffic chaos,” added Dubey, who has been driving a taxi in this pilgrimage city for over two decades.

The Russian ambassador was killed late on Monday by a Turkish policeman in protest against Moscow’s involvement in Syria’s Aleppo, BBC reported. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that the 22-year-old killer of the Russian ambassador in Ankara, Mevlut Mert Aydinta, was “a member of the Gulenist terror network”. “All his connections, from where he was educated to his links, point to FETO,” Erdogan was quoted by Dogan News Agency. The government refers to the followers of Gulen as the “Gulenist Terrorist Network.”

Rebel convoy starts leaving Aleppo DAMASCUS: The last rebel convoy is slated to leave eastern Aleppo through Ramouseh crossing on Thursday, according to military officials. Xinhua news agency reporters at the site saw the convoys leaving. Some rebels have carried light rifles. Red Crescent ambulances are still at the bridge of Ramouseh, observing the evacuation. “The evacuation of rebels is in its last stage and expected to finish within three hours if nothing happened,” a military source said. A Syrian soldier at the site was holding a Syrian flag waiting for going up on a high building to raise it and celebrate after the last rebel leaves. The evacuation of rebels and their families started on December 15, as part of a Russian Turkishdeal to end the rebels’ presence in eastern Aleppo after the army took over 99 percent of the rebel-held areas. At least 3,500 people have left government-besieged areas in the northern Syrian city since the evacuation resumed Monday, a British war monitor said. Some 500 others left Shiite towns besieged by rebels as part of the same deal, it said, Efe news reported earlier. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) on Monday said 65 buses left the final pocket of rebel-held territory in Aleppo.

In a direct criticism of Islamabad, Saikal said it provided a winter haven for the Taliban while reviving the seasonal idea of peace talks. “Winter is about to start in Afghanistan,” he said, adding that “most Taliban men return to the warmth of madrasas in Pakistan for rest and recuperation and to refuel for the next fighting season.” He added: “Thus their seasonality and tactical use of war and peace continues, leaving little room for genuine peace efforts.”

n Indian origin former official of one of the largest pension funds has been charged in a prostitutes and drugs bribery scheme involving billions of dollars in business, prosecutors said. A director and strategist at the New York State Common Retirement Fund (NYCRF), Navnoor Kang “allegedly steered billions of dollars of business to broker-dealers who bribed him with luxury vacations, high-priced watches, drugs, cash and more”, Preet Bharara, the New York Federal prosecutor. Court documents seen by IANS

also listed the services of prostitutes and strippers, “night club bottle service” and a Panerai watch worth $17,420 among the bribes allegedly received by Kang. He was arrested in Portland in Oregon state and was to be produced before a federal judge there, Bharara said. Kang, 38, is a former tennis pro who played in international tournaments in 2005 and 2006. From 2014 to 2016, he was the Director of Fixed Income and Head of Portfolio Strategy at NYCRF, the third largest pension fund in the US with $184 billion in assets. He was responsible for investing $53 billion in fixed income securities.

According to prosecutors, Kang colluded with employees of at least two brokerages to divert business from the NYCRF in exchange for the bribes. The two companies, which were not identified, did not do any business with NYCRF in 2013. But by 2016 their combined annual volume of business was $2.557 billion after Kang had started sending them business, according to court documents. This netted the companies millions of dollars in commissions, prosecutors said. One brokerage employee, Deborah Kelley, is charged in the same case as Kang. They face charges of fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and “wire fraud” for electronic transfer

R

iding on Karun Nair’s unbeaten 303 and leftarm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’s seven for 48, a ruthless India hammered England by an innings and 75 runs in the fifth cricket Test and clinched the five-match rubber 4-0. The Virat Kohli-led side have now extended their unbeaten streak to 18 Tests — the longest in the history of Indian cricket — bettering India’s earlier record of 17 Tests without a defeat between September 1985 and March 1987. The 4-0 victory is also India’s highest against the English side since the 3-0 win in the 1992-93 series. Jadeja, who emerged the wreckerin-chief in the second essay, took his overall match tally to 10 wickets with his three scalps in the first innings. Skipper Kohli, who emerged the highest run-getter from either side (655 runs with two centuries) was named Man-of-the-Series for his efforts. Newcomer Karun Nair (303 not out), who converted his maiden ton into triple century in India’s first innings was awarded the Man-of-the-Match. On Tuesday, a spineless England reeled under Jadeja’s pressure in their second innings as the visitors lost their last six wickets within a span of just 15 runs to be bowled out for a meagre 207 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here. After conceding a 282-run lead, England started positively with the openers — skipper Alastair Cook

Jadeja, Ashwin second Indian duo to occupy top spot DUBAI: Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’s career best 10-wicket haul against England in the Chennai Test has helped him vault to the second spot, just behind his top-ranked teammate Ravichandran Ashwin, in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings for Test bowlers, released here.

Ravichandran Ashwin is ICC Cricketer of the Year DUBAI: India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was named the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Cricketer of the Year, while Test skipper Virat Kohli was chosen to lead the ODI Team of the Year. Ashwin was the only Indian in ICC’s Test Team of the Year and was also named the Test Cricketer of the Year. Batsman Rohit Sharma and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja were named in the ODI team. Ashwin has become the third India player and 12th player overall to win the Garfield Sobers Trophy. The 30-year-old followed in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid (2004) and Sachin Tendulkar (2010). Other recipients of the prestigious trophy include Andrew Flintoff and Jacques Kallis

This is just the second time the top two spots in the ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers have been occupied by Ravindra Jadeja India players, with the pair emulating left-arm spinner

Bishan Singh Bedi and leg-spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, who were ranked one and two in 1974. Jadeja’s performance in the series earned him 66 points and helped him leapfrog over Josh Hazlewood, James Anderson, Dale Steyn and Rangana Herth to be positioned within eight points of Ashwin.

DUBAI: India have ended 2016 as the top ranked Test team on the ICC rankings after registering a 4-0 victory over England in the five-match series which culminated with an innings and 75 runs win for the home side in Chennai. The series win has helped India gain five points. They have now moved to 120 points in the last Test team rankings update of 2016, 15 points ahead of second-placed Australia. In contrast, England, who had started the series tied with Australia on 105 points but were ahead on decimal points, have slipped from the second to the fifth position. Cook was the first to be dismissed, with his team’s score at 103 in the 40th over, edging a widish delivery off Jadeja to K.L. Rahul at leg slip. Cook’s opening partner Jennings also perished soon after, at 110/2 in the 44th over. He danced down the track to negate Jadeja’s spin but managed only to scoop a simple return catch to him.

‘Dangal’: The film, performances expectedly shine

A

fictionalized tale, based on the lives of an amateur wrestler — Mahavir Singh Phogat and his famed daughters, Geeta and Babita Phogat — Dangal is an inspirational story of an ambitious father, who, after failing to fulfil his dreams, aspires to achieve his vision of winning a gold medal for his country in an international arena through his progeny. Narrated through Mahavir’s nephew and the girl’s early sparring partner Omkar’s point of view, the film is a balanced take on the subject and thus offers a few humorous nuggets which otherwise

Film: “Dangal”; Director: Nitesh Tiwari; Cast: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sana Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Aparshakti Khurrana, Girish Kulkarni; Rating: ***1/2 would have been a very dry documentation of their lives. Designed as a typical sports film, and to establish the subject at the very onset, the narrative begins with a preposterous start but soon settles in on a convincing note, of a tyrant father who ensures his

reluctant daughters follow his instructions. The shades in Mahavir’s character are highlighted subtly, bringing his softness and

the messages the film relays to the fore. As a biopic, though onedimensional, the film is well-packaged and presented in a realistic manner. Apart from a few predictable cinematic liberties, it lacks high-voltage drama and the entertainment quotient is dutifully obligatory. The plot keeps you engrossed right till the end and the climax, with the slow-motion shot of Geeta toppling her opponent, is exhilarating. The national anthem is used as a magnetic device to extract the feel of patriotism, and unwittingly, the audience land up giving Geeta and the film a standing ovation.

Truck driver killed in road mishap BY A STAFF WRITER ACRAMENTO, CA -- A 26-yearold truck driver from Sacramento, Calif., was killed in an accident December 19 while transporting Christmas packages. Ravikesh Kumar, who migrated to the US from Fiji five years ago, was driving at 3 am early morning on the 680 freeway in Danville, Calif. According to the California Highway Patrol, Kumar’s truck hit an abandoned Ford minivan on the right shoulder of the freeway, then overturned and struck a large metal pole, trapping Kumar inside. Kumar was extracted from the wreckage, and transported to a hospital in Walnut Creek, Calif., where he died “At this time, it is unclear why the driver allowed his box truck to veer into the right

shoulder,” noted the CHP in a report, adding that alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the incident. Packages of all sorts, many wrapped for Christmas, were scattered all over the freeway. Kumar was a driver for the private company, Avis Trucking, based in Sacramento, and was

transporting parcels to San Jose. The CHP is continuing its investigation into the accident. Kumar’s boss Minesh Prasad, who owns Avis Trucking, told that Kumar had worked for him ever since migrating from Fiji five years ago. Prasad said he had given Kumar a brand new rig just six months ago, and said the vehicle was in top shape. Kumar usually drove a late-night shift and was familiar with the road he was on which was his regular route, said Prasad. But a patch of dry ice likely caused him to skid, he said, noting that icy roads are unexpected on that stretch of the 680. ‘This is a big tragedy for the family,’ said Prasad, adding that much of Kumar’s family lives in Sacramento. Kumar’s wife – to whom he had been married for seven years – was finally allowed to immigrate to the U.S. just three months ago, he said.

community news- midwest Raees’ tribute song ‘Laila Main Laila” is released FRIDAY, 23 DECEMBER, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - Setting the mercury levels rising, sensational actress Sunny Leone exploded on to screens in full bling and bang with the scintillating dance number ‘Laila Main Laila’ from Shah Rukh Khan’s latest film ‘Raees’. The song is a tribute to the original Qurbani track featuring Zeenat Aman and Feroz Khan (1980). Although the song officially releases only now, Sunny teased fans with a sneak peek on her social media channel earlier this week. Sunny is seen in her Laila ensemble--a peacock-blue, Arabic-inspired lehenga-choli, volumised wavy hair, maang-teeka and a waist-belt to accessorise her Arabian Nights look. The energetic dance performance in Laila Main Laila feels in sync with the spirit of the film. While Sunny captioned her photo with a succinct: “Proud to be part of ‘Laila Main Laila’ (in) Raees... the journey has just begun”,

C

Shah Rukh Khan and Raees director Rahul Dholakia were quick to re-tweet her post. “Absolutely awesome,” tweeted SRK. “Ram Sampath and the ebullient Sunny Leone are bringing back a blast from the past.” Zeenat Aman was the epitome of grace and class when she brought Laila to audiences. The new rendition of the track is a gesture by the producers of the film, Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment, along with the cast and crew of thanking those behind the original track for such an

iconic song. Laila Main Laila is intrinsic to the film’s narrative and helps to take the film forward. It creates just the right amount of drama, thrill and intrigue in the plot. Since Raees is set in the early 1980s to 1990s Gujarat, India, the track fits in beautifully with the timeframe of the film, creating the appropriate backdrop to take audiences back to the 80s vibe. Interestingly, one of the background dancers in the original song, Bulbul, also shot

3

for the new version of the song! Since Sunny was introduced to Bollywood, she has connected most to the 70’s and 80’s music era, with Laila Main Laila being her firm favourite. Raees is a fictitious story of a man named Raees (Shah Rukh Khan) and how his relationships and meteoric rise helped him build an entire empire from scratch, making him the single-most powerful man in the state. However, his downfall will be crossing paths with the no-nonsense police officer Majumdar, whose sole reason for existence is the elimination of crime. What ensues next is a tumultuous battle between the two, forming a key defining element of the film’s narrative. Directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Atul Kulkarni, and Mahira Khan. RAEES is an Excel Entertainment Production, co-produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Excel Entertainment. It releases in cinemas worldwide on January 25 and in the UK by Zee Studios International.

Parents tell lies for kids’ admission BY A STAFF WRITER EST RIDGE , IL -- The parents of eight suburban students were found to have lied about where they lived in order for their children to gain admission to five Chicago Public Schools (CPSes) selective-enrolment institutions, the district’s Office of the Inspector General found in its annual report. Of those eight, two of the students were admitted to Northside College Prep in North Park; two were admitted to Decatur Classical

W

School in West Ridge; and one applied to Decatur using a faulty address but was not accepted. Now, those families owe CPSes thousands

in non-resident tuition, the Inspector’s office said. Part of the criteria considered for admission at selective-enrolment schools are the socioeconomic factors that correlate to the US Census tract families say they live in so students from lower economic tiers can have opportunities at the prestigious schools. According to the CPS investigator, a family from Highland Park, who had owned a 3,500-square-foot house for over 10 years, said they lived in a 600-square-foot apartment in

Rogers Park in order to get their two children into Northside College Prep. “But an apartment inspection, surveillances, documents, electronic records and interviews revealed that the apartment was a sham residence,” inspector Nicholas Schuler wrote. Because the eldest child spent the 2015-16 school year there, the family was ordered to pay CPS $12,878 for living outside the district. The same family tried using the Rogers Park address again to get its younger son enrolled at Northside as well.

Father, son hire man to kill old mother BY A STAFF WRITER ERO BEACH, FL -- An Indian American Florida man and his son have been arrested and charged with trying to hire a homeless man to murder the older man’s mother. The duo sought out homeless men using free wireless internet at a Vero Beach McDonald’s to carry out the plot. Arrested were 44-year-old Suraj Narine and his 20-year-old son Christopher. Indian River deputies also arrested 55-year-old Michael “Shorty” Hamons, who they say was paid $10,000 to kill Suraj Narine’s 73-year-old mother, Magdalene. Deputies said the Narines wanted Hamons to inject Suraj’s mother with insulin, put her in a car and push it into a canal. Investigators say Hamons, who had a criminal history, planned to kill the woman on December 8, but another homeless man who had also been solicited in the murderfor-hire plot tipped off deputies. The informant went to the Narines’ home with a hidden audio and video recorder December 6 and taped a conversation about the plot.

Deputies said Christopher told them he was “scared of (his father) and felt pressured” to participate in the murder-for-hire plot. Both Narines were unemployed, and deputies said the plot was “financially driven,”

Suraj and Christopher Narine were arrested and charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Hamons was arrested and charged with felony conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY -- Sonia Patel’s ‘Rani Patel in Full Effect’ is among five nominees for the William C. Morris Award, presented by the American Library Association for the year’s best debut novel written for teens. Patel is an Indian American psychiatrist of Gujarati origin. The Morris prize will be among many announced by the library association, which also gives the John Newbery Medal for best children’s book and the Randolph Caldecott Medal for best picture book. In Patel’s book, Rani’s father leaves her mother for another woman, causing Rani to shave her head in mourning. The visibility of her act of rebellion propels her onto the stage as a hip-hop performer and into a romantic relationship with a man who is much older. The whirlwind romance, coming on the heels of her father’s abandonment, make her begin to understand how her father’s sexual abuse wounded her in deeper ways than she, or her mother, have ever been able to acknowledge. Patel graduated from Moloka’i High and Intermediate School, then obtained her bachelor’s degree in history at Stanford University. She went on to earn a medical degree from the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine, and then completed five years of residency training in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry at Stanford University and the University of Hawai’i.

Gift mind-controlled toys this Christmas

Action plan for healthy winter skin IANS, NEW DELHI

LONDON: Imagine your child controlling toys with their brain while you get busy with home chores. According to researchers from the University of Warwick in Britain, next generation toys controlled with the power of thoughts can become must have gifts in the near future. Led by Professor Christopher James, the team has developed a technology which allows electronic devices to be activated using electrical impulses from brain waves, by connecting our thoughts to computerised systems. The research connects the human mind with electronic devices and sensors in headsets receive brain waves and feed them into electrical circuits. As a result, remote-controlled cars and toy robots could be activated with kids’ levels of concentration like thinking of his/her favorite color or stroking your dog. Instead of a hand-held controller, the headset is used to create a brain-computer interface. —IANS

A textile conservationist and craft revivalist, Jain feels a dire need to restore the traditional crafts and weaving techniques that seem to be going out of the market. “Fashion is a very powerful platform -- make it, give it visibility, create a demand for the product and move on,” said the designer.

The first edition of Serendipity Arts Festival kicked off last week with a wide array of some of the most enthralling art and photography exhibitions, display of craft work and captivating musical performances. The festival commenced with the Serendipity Arts Conclave hosted by Ranjit Hoskote which saw leading art connoisseurs come together to deliberate on “What should an arts institution of the future in Goa look like?” Throwing in their subjective views based on their professional expertise and experience, illustrious artists, poets, scholars and historians such as Maria Aurora Couto, Arshia Sattar, Tishani Doshi, Aneesh Pradhan, Mortimer Chatterjee, Shukla Sawant, Manisha Patil

dverse effects of the winter season on one’s skin can be minimized if you prepare for it in the right manner, says an expert. Kiran Lohia, Medical Director, Lumiere Dermatology, lists precautions one can take for keeping your skin healthy during winter: Precautions during the day Take brief showers: Keep the show-

er as brief as possible and use lukewarm, not hot water. Switch to less aggressive, moisturizing solutions instead of soaps since the pH of soap is 7.5, which is greater than that of skin -- 5.5. This high pH may cause the breakdown, leaking out natural moisture, lipids and nutrients from the skin. Look for hydrating agents in skincare products: Try to look for skincare products that include ingredients known as natural moisturizing

factors. Look for constituents such as Hyaluronic acid, glycerin and humectants — a substance, especially a skin lotion or a food additive, used to reduce the loss of mois-

ture — in skin products that promote the increase of natural moisture present in the skin. Use sunblock: Perhaps the most common skin care myth during winter months is that you can’t get sunburned. UV exposure is usual part of the process when your skin is exposed to sunlight, regardless of the season. Therefore, a winter sunscreen is a must. A broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 30 (or more) should be used always Precautions during the night Use a humidifier in your room: During winter, the air dries out. The dryer the air, the more it steals moisture from your skin. If you live in a dry climate, use a humidifier, particularly in your bedroom at night.

Obesity gene lures kids to fast food NEW YORK: Kids’ response to advertisements of burgers, pizzas and french-fries may be the result of a key obesity gene influencing their brain to respond more to food advertisements and other cues to eat, says a study. then confirmed through the presence of parasites in the blood. The current study, published recently in the journal eLife, showed that substantial quantities

of trypanosomes that cause the disease can exist within the skin and can be transmitted back to the tsetse fly vector. “Our results have important implications with regard to the eradication of sleeping sickness. Firstly, our findings indicate that current diagnostic methods, which rely on observing parasites in the blood, should be re-evaluated and should include examining the skin for parasites,” said lead researcher Annette MacLeod from University of Glasgow in Britain. “In terms of treatment, it may also be necessary to develop novel therapeutics capable of targeting sources of infection outside the blood circulation,” MacLeod noted.

Processed meat worsens asthma IANS, LONDON

L

ove to gorge on ham, sausages and salami? Beware, a new study suggests that higher intake of cured and processed meats can worsen asthma symptoms. Cured and processed meat is rich in nitrites, which may have a role in airway inflammation — a typical feature of asthma, the study said. The findings showed that individuals who consumed four or more weekly servings of cured and

processed meat were 76 per cent more likely to experience worsening asthma symptoms. This could include difficulty in

breathing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. “This research extends the deleterious effect of cured meat on health, and the effect of diet on asthma in adults, and provides a novel analytic approach regarding the role of BMI in the diet-asthma association,” said Zhen Li from Paul Brousse Hospital located in Paris, France. The results showed that cured and processed meat plays a potential role in lung function and health, the researchers added.

LONDON: Suffering from chronic shortness of breath? Beware, you might be at risk of a potential heart failure or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), as suggested by a study. Shortness of breath, which is medically known as dyspnea, is often defined as an intense tightening in the chest, air hunger or a feeling of suffocation. “Shortness of breath is often a sign of heart or lung disease because these two organs are most closely involved in the respiratory system,” said Nasser Ahmadi, research student at University of Gothenburg in Sweden, in one of the statements. Chronic shortness of breath can also be considered as an equally important warning signal similar to high blood pressure, noted the researchers during the study. However, shortness of breath is an often overlooked symptom because people generally tend to associate it with aging. “The fact that people do not seek medical advice for their breathlessness issues is often due to the fact that people associate symptoms with the natural process of aging,” Ahmadi added. —IANS

Regular use of aspirin bad Using social media increases depression for uterine cancer patients IANS, NEW YORK

NEW YORK: Regular use of over-thecounter non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen is associated with an increased risk of dying in patients diagnosed with a type of uterine cancer. “There is an increasing evidence that chronic inflammation is involved in endometrial cancer and progression and recent data suggests that inhibition of inflammation through NSAID use plays a role,” said co-lead author of the study Theodore Brasky from Ohio State University in the US. “Our finding was surprising because it goes against previous studies that suggest NSAIDs can be used to reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of developing or dying from certain cancers, like colorectal

U

cancer,” Brasky said. In the study involving more than 4,000 patients, the researchers found that regular NSAID use was associated with a 66 per cent increased risk of dying from endometrial cancer among women with Type-1 endometrial cancers, a typically less-aggressive form of the disease.

sing a couple of social media platforms may be all right, but being in the network of a broader range of social media outlets may put you at an increased risk of depression and anxiety, warns a new study. The findings suggest that compared with the total time spent on social media, use of multiple platforms is more strongly associated with depression and anxiety among the young adults. The researchers found that people who report using seven to 11 social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression and anxiety than their peers who use zero to two social media platforms. “This association is strong

People using seven to 11 social media platforms had faced more depression
