Violence makes for a sombre Eid in Kashmir

T
he violence-ravaged Kashmir Valley would never miss Eid revelry even during the peak of militancy in the 1990s. On this joyous day, people would just forget everything to celebrate with colorful clothes, elaborate feasts and evening fireworks. But this Eid the mood was subdued and glum. Marketplaces were deserted. Heavily armed security forces dotted roads and streets. Children didn’t venture out amid a
fear that was palpable. Eid was not cancelled but observed as a simple and dutiful affair. No celebrations. No new clothes for most of the children. And no lavish non-vegetarian dishes. “Eid literally means happiness. But for us it is a sad Eid to be honest. Our houses, our faces and our behavior today are nothing but a sight of gloom,” Syed Ismail, a Srinagar businessman, told IANS. The Kashmir Valley has been reeling under the deadliest unrest it has suffered in the last six years. Over 85 people have died in the

unending cycle of violence triggered by the July 8 killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Since then, the valley has remained shut amid daily stonethrowing protests and counter-violence by security forces. At least 12,000 people have been injured. Many among them have been maimed and hundreds have lost their eyesight permanently or partially. In the run up to the Eid-ul-Adha -- one of the only two major Muslim festivals, the other being Eidul-Fitr -- many, including the authorities, had hoped that the day of joy would bring some respite from the over two-month-long bloodshed and daily mayhem.
But that was not to be. The violence continued unabated even on the day Muslims are strongly forbidden from mourning. The authorities, fearing an
“Eid literally means happiness. But for us it is a sad Eid. Our houses, our faces and our behavior today are nothing but a sight of gloom,” outbreak of more violence, imposed a strict curfew across the valley to prevent people from taking out pro-freedom marches. But people still defied the securi-
ty forces. Protesters came out with stones and security forces retaliated with lethal weapons. The fresh violence on Tuesday left at least three protesters dead and dozens injured as security forces blocked roads and entry routes to several important mosques. Special Eid prayers, necessarily to be offered late in the morning and in huge gatherings, were not allowed. The Eidgah in the heart of the old city of Srinagar was sealed on the Eid eve. The sprawling prayer ground is meant for congregational prayers, especially on Eid. Jamia Masjid, in the volatile Downtown Srinagar, was cordoned off too.

ordered on the west by the bluish-green waters of the Arabian Sea and on the east by the lush green forests of the Western Ghats, Sindhudurg district in southwest coastal Maharashtra is a veritable tourist delight. The district offers an equal measure of 30 sparkling beaches and big and small hill resorts — including the famous Amboli — scores of temples, festivals celebrated grandly, a salubrious climate virtually round-the-year, the typical Malvani style cuisine with emphasis on seafood, many “things to do” and friendly people. Earlier this week, Sindhudurg suddenly shot into the national limelight after it was declared as “cleanest” district in the plains in

the country, while Mandi in Himachal Pradesh claimed the honour in the hills section. Though happy with the distinction achieved, the local adminis-
tration shrugs at the honor almost nonchalantly. “The people of the district have a very high civic sense and it has been historically doing well on the
cleanliness front. There is good synergy between the people and the local government that has made cleanliness a habit rather than a compulsion,” CEO of Sindhudurg Zilla Parishad Shekhar Singh, an IAS officer, told IANS. He recalled how former CEO Anoop Kumar Yadav had first launched a mass movement on imbibing the spirit of cleanliness among the people way back in 2006. Even earlier, in 2000, the then Rural Development Minister, the late R.R. Patil, had launched his pet scheme, the Sant Gadge Baba Village Sanitation Campaign (SGBVSC) — later supported by Unicef — in which Sindhudurg villages regularly come tops on several fronts, Singh said. Sindhudurg Collector Uday Choudhary said it has been a long
tough road and the success was not achieved overnight. “Fortunately, the locals are highly tuned to hygiene and cleanliness and we were always leading in the SGBVSC. Of course, the real push came in the form of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachch Bharat mission that spurred us to clear the last lap successfully and catapulted us to the national level,” Choudhary told IANS. The duo explained that a survey under the Gramin Swachh Survekshan since May this year measured overall cleanliness in all places, sanitation, water supply, open-defecation-free (ODF) communities and solid-liquid waste management practices. Sindhudurg became the state’s first ODF district in April 2016. The district’s picturesque beach town, Vengurla, has set a new trend.

Miscreants arrested from gurdwara LONDON: British police this week made “a number of arrests” after more than 20 men, some carrying swords, entered a gurdwara. Pictures aired by media showed police have arrested some members of the gang consisting of 20 to 30 men in the town, where a marriage between a Sikh and non-Sikh was due to take place, Xinhua reported. Mixed marriages had been a contentious issue in the local Sikh community. Armed officers were on the scene at the Gurdwara on Tachbrook Drive and attempted to negotiate a peaceful solution, the Guardian reported. “At this time we believe that it is an escalation of an ongoing local dispute,” a police official said. “The report was received at 6.47 a.m. after a group of between 20 and 30 men entered the temple. We believe that some of the men are in possession of bladed items and as such armed officers have been deployed to the scene,” the police official added. Jatinder Singh Birdi, a former treasurer at the temple, said a marriage between a Sikh and non-Sikh couple was due to take place, BBC reported. Birdi said mixed marriages has been a contentious issue in the local Sikh community, with a minority opposing using the temple for such services. “There have been tensions that have been going on for a couple of years with some people objecting to mixed marriages in taking place in the gurdwara,” Birdi. — IANS

A doctorate from Stanford University in April 2015 and a graduate in electrical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, Bharadia, 28, who hails from Ichalkarnji in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district, has been awarded for his contribution to radio waves. come “out of the blue” and was a “complete shock”. She said the Leicester East MP begged for forgiveness, saying he was “very sorry” and promising it would “never happen again” after he broke the news to her before the scandal was reported in the press. “It was like an out-of-body experience, it was not real. There was a lot of things over the years, but this had not been one”, Fernandes said. “It was a terrible shock and I am still processing it ... Keith is not a bad person, he’s just done a terrible thing. It’s absolutely terrible because it’s affected all of us, because it’s affected the kids,” she added.
Five Indians arrested for drug smuggling BEIJING: Five Indians have been arrested in China for allegedly smuggling drugs from India, officials said. from now — India will lead the world in key categories: it will be the most populous nation, with the largest middle class, the largest number of college graduates, the third
largest economy, the most patent holders, and most mega-cities,” he said speaking on the theme of “Advancing our Shared Values”. “You will lead the world in inter-
net and smart phone users. Development and infrastructure growth will be phenomenal, just imagine how much will change given that two-thirds of the infrastructure and cities of modern India are yet to be built”. Speaking on India-US ties, he said that the relationship has been “on a strong trajectory for the past decade, has made great strides in the past two years in particular”. “Our two leaders, Prime Minister Modi and President Obama have met eight times, including last week in China and then again in Laos,” he stated. Citing the reasons for the growth in ties between the two sides, one was the “chemistry between our two leaders, that’s for sure”.

Bengaluru back to normal

B
engaluru limped back to normal life this week, making police lift curfew in all the affected areas two days after violence shook the country’s tech hub in protest against Karnataka releasing Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu on the Supreme Court’s directives. “Everything has back to normal across the city. Curfew has been lifted in all the 16 localities in northwest and southwest suburbs. The situation is under full control though ban order remains across the city,” Home Minister G. Parameshwara told reporters here after visiting the disturbed areas. Asserting that there would be no more violence or shutdowns in the city hereafter, the minister said heightened security would remain and close vigil was being main-

tained against anti-social elements to prevent any untoward incident. “I have visited the areas where curfew was lifted and travelled in metro rail from Mysuru Road station (in the city’s southwest) to Vid-
hana Soudha station (secretariat) (in the city center) to demonstrate to the people that normal life is back,” said Parameshswara. The state road transport corporation has been directed to operate
bus services to Tamil Nadu and other states. Partial curfew was enforced three days since September 12 after violence erupted on Monday in which one person was killed in police firing and 78 vehicles were burnt across the city. A Rapid Action Force battalion was posted at Attibele in the city’s south bordering Hosur town in Tamil Nadu to prevent any untoward incident and regulate traffic. With buses, taxis, autos and metro rail returning to the roads, thousands commuted to offices and workplaces in and around the city. Passengers going to or alighting at railway junctions and bus terminals in the city and the airport were able to get transport. “The city is back to normalcy, with shops, hotels, offices, theatres, and private establishments opening in all areas,” said city Police Commissioner N.S. Megharikh.
Karnataka victim of injustice: CM IANS, BENGALURU
A
ppealing for calm, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah this week said though the state has been a victim of “injustice”, his government would implement the “difficult” apex court order on sharing Cauvery river water with Tamil Nadu. Addressing a press conference here after an emergency cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister also urged that the image of ‘Brand Bengaluru’ as India’s tech capital
should not be sullied with further violence, as was witnessed this week. Siddaramaiah said he has requested for a meeting with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mediate in the Cauvery dispute as both the states could not afford the situation to go out of control. “Though we are victims of injustice and finding difficulty in implementing the Supreme Court’s fresh order, we are yet releasing water with a heavy heart,” he said. Siddaramaiah assured the people

of Bengaluru, especially Tamils, of protection to them and their property, a day after widespread violence rocked the city over releasing the Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu. Thanking the people for maintaining peace and in restoring nor-
malcy in the city, the Chief Minister said: “As Bangalore is an international city with a global image and a brand as India’s Silicon Valley, I seek cooperation of all, especially media in protecting its reputation.”
ASSOCHAM Secretary General DS Rawat. (File Photo: IANS)
NEW DELHI: The widespread damage due to the violent protests over the Cauvery dispute has caused Karnataka to suffer a loss of Rs 22,000-25,000 besides denting the image of the state capital as India’s Silicon Valley, industry chamber Assocham said. “With widespread damage to the vital urban infrastructure, interruption in the transport including roads, rail and air and inability of the workforce to safely move to and from offices and factories, Karnataka, particularly Bengaluru city, is estimated to have suffered a loss between Rs 22,000-25,000 crore due to Cauvery dispute related violence,” said a statement. “Violence in the state capital and other parts of Karnataka has severely dented the image of Bengaluru as Silicon Valley of India, home to almost all the Fortune 500 companies,” said the chamber appealing for peace in both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. “The way the violent incidents had spread is demoralizing the business and industrial community, particularly in the capital city of Karnataka. The image that India built around Bengaluru as its ‘Silicon Valley’ is being sullied,” said Assocham Secretary General D.S. Rawat. “The authorities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should not allow under any circumstances the law and order to be compromised. While the water is a basic requirement and an emotional issue, the situation is being exploited by miscreants” said Rawat. — IANS

A
n uneasy calm enveloped Bengaluru even as protests erupted at Mandya and Mysuru in southern Karnataka this week over the Cauvery water row with Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu was peaceful, with security beefed up for businesses owned by Kannadigas and also for popular personalities of Karnataka origin. However, angry truck owners in Tamil Nadu told the media that they would hold a demonstration in Hosur town, condemning the burning of around 45 trucks by hooligans in Karnataka.
In Bengaluru, India's IT hub, one person was killed and two oth-
ers were injured in police firing this week night to quell violence.
Violence erupted in Karnataka this week following stray incidents of violence in Tamil Nadu in retaliation to the attack on a Tamil youth in Karnataka. A hotel promoted by a Kannadiga and some vehicles with Karnataka registration were attacked at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. In Bengaluru, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said: "It is true that violence is not a solution to any problem. We have decided to impose law and order with an iron hand." Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. "The violence and arson seen in the last two days
is only causing loss to the poor, and to our nation's property." Referring to the Supreme Court order to Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu till September 20, Siddaramaiah said: "It is difficult to implement the order but we will ensure enough drinking water for Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya and other Cauvery basin areas." According to him, the Supreme Court's Monday order on release of 12,000 cusecs water to Tamil Nadu till September 20 reflects Karnataka's inability to implement the September 5 judgement to release 15,000 cusecs per day.

ctor Karan, who awaits the release of forthcoming Tamil action-thriller Uchathula Shiva, believes all that it takes to judge the fate of a film, irrespective of the language, at the box office today is one day. “One day is all a film has to prove itself at the box office. Having been around for over two decades in the industry, I’ve been part of several silver jubilee films (those that run continuously for 25 weeks in cinemas). Elaborating in detail, he said: “Today, if a film succeeds in running continuously for 25 days across theatres, it’s an achievement. It’s the reality and we need to accept it. With multiple releases each week, audiences have options to choose from.” Known for starring in several Tamil hits of the 1990s such as Kadhal Kottai, Love Today and Sollamale, Karan has no complaints about changing times in filmdom. “Back then, films were released in fewer screens and you didn’t

CHENNAI: Filmmaker Harish Shankar, known for hit films such as Mirapakay and Gabbar Singh, is all set to direct as well produce the yet-untitled Telugu remake of Hindi blockbuster Special 26. “Harish is currently busy with the pre-production work of his next film with Allu Arjun,” a reliable source told IANS. “After completing this film, he will commence work on ‘Special 26’ remake, which he intends to direct as well as produce with his close friend Krishna,” the source added. Although it was rumored that Ravi Teja would star in the remake, the source clarified that the cast and crew are yet to be finalized. ctor Silambarasan aka Simbu, who was rumored to have commented over the ongoing Cauvery row between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, said hed never garner publicity by making political statements. “I’m currently in Thailand, completing the last leg of shoot for my film Accham Enbathu Madamaiyada. Today I was informed by well wishers, as well as my father, about my ‘apparent’ comment on the sensitive Cauvery issue. As a responsible citizen, I’m aware of my role and clearly understand my limits too. I have not
made or given any statement on this issue,” Simbu said in a statement. Karnataka has been protesting over release of Cauvery river water
to Tamil Nadu, crippling normal life as well as disrupting work in hundreds of IT firms and back offices in India’s tech hub Bengaluru. “This is an issue between two states, and not a platform for artistes to engage in propaganda or take lightly. The elected leaders of both states with the support of the judiciary will provide us a solution. The best we can do is to pray for a good monsoon that can provide prosperity and peace to both the states,” he said. Simbu also hoped at no cost should this issue jeopardize the relationship between the people of these two states, who have coexisted as neighbors.
said: “It wasn’t planned. When there’s a gap of even two to three months between projects, it usually results in the delay of a project by a few more months. It’s exactly what happened in my case.”
Somasundaram turns villain CHENNAI: Actor Somasundaram, best known for his work in Karthik Subbaraj-directed Jigarthanda, will be seen playing the antagonist in upcoming thriller Yaakkai. His last on screen appearance was as the lead in this year’s critically-acclaimed Tamil drama Joker. “If aJoker’ explored one side of Somasundaram, audiences will get to see his other side in Yaakkai. He will be portrayed in a completely new and fresh avatar. ctor Nakul, who played a geeky character in last year’s Tamil hit Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavam, says he will be seen in a completely new avatar in upcoming Tamil romantic-comedy Sei. “My role in Sei will be in total contrast to what I played in Tamizhuku En. I’ll be shown in a new light, in a new avatar and I’m sure audiences will love it,” Nakul, who plays a wannabe actor in the film, told IANS. When asked what he liked about the character, he said, “This project will be a turning point in my
career, and it’s going to be a very different experience for me. I play Saravedi Saravana, and he’s the most exaggerated version of an
aspiring actor. It’s a very loud, colourful character and it was so much fun playing it.” Directed by Raj Babu, the film
also stars Aanchal Munjal, Chandrika Ravi, Nassar and Prakash Raj. “Apart from the fact that I got to work with a very talented and young team, I was really excited to share screen space with Prakash Raj Sir. Initially, I was very anxious to act alongside him. My first scene with him was the climax and I kept wondering how I can match such a perfectionist with my performance,” he said. Thankfully, Nakul managed to impress everybody including Prakash Raj with his performance. “Once the camera starts rolling, we’re all actors. I just focused on my part and everything automatically fell in place,” he said.

RGV geared up for third part of ‘Sarkar’ IANS, MUMBAI
F LOS ANGELES: Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has become the first Indian film celebrity to enter Forbes magazine's list of highest paid TV actresses in the world, a media report said. Priyanka, who ranks eighth in the list, made her entry after starring in the American drama series "Quantico". Her earnings are pegged at $11 million, Forbes said this week . While the former Miss World made her international acting debut last year with "Quantico", she is gearing up for its second season, where she will be seen essaying the character of a CBI agent named Alex Parrish. In India, the 34-year-old actress has starred in two Bollywood films in the past one year — Bajirao Mastani and Jai Gangaajal — and will make her Hollywood film debut with Baywatch alongside Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson, the world's highest-paid actor. — IANS

Maharashtra is the host partner for the inaugural Global Citizen Festival India, and Fadnavis extended his complete support to the initiative. “Global Citizen is an important initiative given its ability to engage citizens and engage them in crucial issues. The Global Education and Leadership Foundation’s focus on ethical altruistic leadership is important work that involves investing in our demographic dividend,” he said.
ilmaker Ram Gopal Varma, also known as RGV, is all set for the third part of his Sarkar saga featuring megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the lead. Varma, who shifted to Hyderabad and made slew of Telugu films, is back here and is set to storm the box- office with Sarkar franchise. Excerpts from the interview: Q. Why Sarkar 3 at this stage of your career? A. The point of continuing any franchise is only when the characters create an impact and Mr.
Ram Gopal Varma
Bachchan did that so powerfully in Sarkar. Amitji and I were discussing ideas on how we should make Sarkar 3 since a few years and we both were clear that we won’t attempt it unless we are extremely sure we can (give) better
(than) what has been already done in Sarkar in 2005 and Sarkar Raj in 2008. So to get the absolutely right content was the reason for the delay. Q. How different would he be in Sarkar 3? A. The last time I saw Amitji in an angry man’s role was only in Sarkar 10 years ago and I designed that character from the angry image he derived from his portrayal in iconic films like Zanjeer, Deewar and Bemisal. In Sarkar my ambition is to portray him as being angrier than ever and that of course for highly valid reasons.

‘Baar Baar Dekho’: Its a unique concept
D
irector Nitya Mehra’s Baar Baar Dekho is a romantic film that is uniquely conceptualized. It is technically wellpackaged to give a holographic view of life, but the meandering narrative adds no meaning to the composition. Themed live life for the moment, the film gives an insight into the life of Jai Varma (Sidharth Malhotra) a professor in Vedic Mathematics. A day before his wedding, to his childhood friend Diya Kapoor, an artist, realization dawns on him that his views on life and his

ISKCON yatra to mark its 50th anniversary BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- A 40-foot high, colourfully-decorated and hand-pulled cart—surrounded by thousands of chanting and dancing devotees—will roll down the streets of downtown Chicago on September 17 to kick off a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), better known as the Hare Krishna Movement. The “Chariot Festival - Ratha Yatra Parade” begins at 2 pm at the Buckingham Fountain (Columbus Drive) in the downtown area and meander its way through Madison Ave., Michigan Ave., and State Streets. The procession joins the “Hare Krishna Festival of India” at Daley Plaza for an afternoon of free vegetarian food; stage performances of classical Indian dance; a dramatic rendition of the ancient history

connected with “Jagannath;” and multiple booths about reincarnation, meditation, and yoga. “ISKCON’s founder, Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami, first came to New York City from India in September, 1965 to spread the teachings of Lord Krishna to the western
world,” said Amrita Hari, spokeswoman for the Krishna society. “It’s very special for us to kick off the 50th Anniversary of ISKCON where he began right here in New York.” Despite its humble beginnings, over the past 50 years, ISKCON has grown to a global community of over 600 temples, 110 vegetarian restaurants, and 65 farms and eco villages. The affiliated Bhaktivedanta Book Trust has sold 516 million books and magazines on Krishna consciousness. Hare Krishna Food Relief programs feed a free vegetarian lunch to 1.2 million school children each day in India. Celebrations later this year will include dozens of Ratha Yatra parades in cities worldwide, including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, London, and Paris, and gala events at the Sydney Opera House, European Parliament, and other major venues.
BY A STAFF WRITER ED BLUFF, CA -- Suren Patel, an Indian American city councilman in Red Bluff, Calif., who was arrested in Florida in July attempting to flee the country, stemming from an investigation opened against him last year, faces several criminal charges. Patel, 43, who was appointed to the city council in December 2014, was the owner of the America’s Best Value Inn in Red Bluff. Tehama County District Attorney Gregg Cohen announced the councilman’s arrest in a July 25 news conference. Among the charges Patel faces include workers’ compensation fraud, perjury and conspiracy to commit welfare fraud. Additionally, Patel faces charges for not paying taxes to the city and fraud, with Cohen adding that he did not pay his taxes to the city as the Inn owner. Patel, who was jailed in Brevard County, Florida, on $250,000 bail, was extradited back to California in August. The councilman is also being investigated for embezzlement in connection with a claim by an elderly woman saying she was charged $6,000 on top of her room charge. An investigation was opened in June 2015 with investigators seizing computers, cell phones and business records. Over the next months, investigators had a forensic auditor from the state analyze the insurance fraud allegations. Investigators said they determined Patel was engaging in a conspiracy to allow people to commit welfare fraud. They said they also found evidence of theft from the city through the transit occupancy tax. Cohen filed a complaint listing 13 felony charges for defrauding the city of Red Bluff of nearly $20,000. If convicted on the charges of misappropriating public funds, Patel would never be able to hold office again. Each of the charges carries sentences of two to four years in prison. Patel, who is no longer associated with Best Value Inn, can still legally hold his council seat because he has not been convicted of a felony yet. Patel’s seat is up for re-election in November.

The study involved 119 healthy male and female participants between 30 and 80 years of age who stayed at the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in Carlsbad, California. Slightly more than half were assigned to the Panchakarma intervention and the remainder to a control group. Blood plasma analyses, using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, were taken before and after the six-day testing period. Panchakarma treatment for a week may reduce heart disease risk.
Risking babies’ birth weight?
IANS, NEW YORK
P SYDNEY: Exercising at basic physical activity levels -- 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity like walking and cycling -- may help to reduce harmful effects of drinking alcohol, a study has found. The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that for alcohol drinkers, physical activity may decrease the risks of dying both from cancer and from deaths from any cause. “Our research suggests that physical activity has substantial health benefits even in the presence of potentially unhealthy behaviors such as drinking alcohol,” said Emmanuel Stamatakis, Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, Australia. “Among physically inactive people, we saw that the risk for cancer and all-cause mortality was higher even at relatively low
levels of drinking,” Stamatakis added. The findings suggested that drinking even within recommended levels was associated with a 36 per cent greater risk of death from cancer as well as a 13 per cent greater risk of death from any cause. But this risk was substantially lessened among those who were physically active at the basic recommended level -- equivalent to at least 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking -- or at the upper recommended level (equivalent to at least 300 minutes of moderate intensity activity per week). In the physically active groups, only harmful levels of drinking were associated with increased risk of cancer death and other causes. — IANS
regnant women with a history of bipolar disorder in the family or self have higher risk for developing postpartum psychosis, according to a new study. Postpartum psychosis mostly stems from bipolar disorder and increases the risk for a mother harming or killing her baby or herself. “This is a serious disorder and no one likes to treat women with medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but there is certainly a very high risk in not treating as
well, such as the risk for suicide,” said Katherine Wisner, Professor at Northwestern University, at Chicago, in the US. Women with postpartum depression can have symptoms that may include fatigue, anxiety and often obsessional thoughts.
LONDON: Women who undergo gastric bypass surgery for weight loss before their pregnancy may increase the risk of giving birth to babies that are small in size or have lower average birth weights, a study has found. Maternal obesity can lead to various health conditions for the newborn, such as high birth weight and low blood sugar as well as also cause birthing complications. — IANS
Sugar consumption high among children IANS, LONDON
C
hildren are everyday consuming up to three times more sugar than what is good for them, a survey conducted by an Indian-origin researcher has revealed. “The results of this survey are extremely worrying. At a time when one in three 10-year-old children are overweight or obese, and one in three five-year-olds has tooth decay, the health risks posed by failure to tackle sugar intake are serious,” the Daily Mail quoted Neena Modi, Professor at the
Imperial College London as saying. The survey was carried out among 1,288 adults and 1,258 children who completed a three or four day food diary. According to the study, children aged four to 10 drank 100 ml of
sugary drinks per day on average and sugar still makes up 13 per cent of a child’s daily calorie intake, more than twice the five per cent recommended limit. Those aged 11 to 18 have a daily diet made up of 15 per cent sugar - three times the recommended amount. Meanwhile, adults aged between 19 to 64 are also heavy consumers, with 12 per cent of their diets made up of sugar, the study revealed. About one-fifth of five-year-olds and one-third of 11-year-olds are overweight or obese.

Pranati Rai Prakash wins ‘India’s Next Top Model 2’ MUMBAI: Pranati Rai Prakash from Patna won the reality show “India’s Next Top Model Season 2”. The modelling reality show, an adaptation of “America’s Next Top Model”, was judged by modelactress Lisa Haydon and celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani. The contestants at the show were mentored by VJ and actress Anusha Dandekar and image consultant and grooming expert Neeraj Gaba. Their first couture line this year is a move in the same direction. Asked about the move, Ankur said: “We established AM:PM 14 years ago as a luxury-pret label and will continue offering the same in the future,” “But the brand has grown aggressively over the last few years with a very loyal customer base which avidly subscribes to our aesthetic and design language and has continuously asked us to do a couture line,” he added.

Add jute, brass and clay handicrafts to your home, says an expert. Cheenu Gupta, Co-founder of Divinehaat.com, an e-commerce portal of handicraft goods, has shared some ideas: Brass handicrafts: Brass provides a durable and sturdy decor option. There are so many brass handicrafts and show pieces like vases, table tops, wall art, lamps, ornament boxes, plates, bowls and figurines. True brass tends to oxidize quickly when exposed to air and hence check that the brass product you are buying has been given a clear coat-
