ifted with a resonating magical voice that captivated the refined listeners of Hindustani classical music for generations, Girija Devi played a key part in popularizing and raising the profile of Thumri, that gave her the appellation ‘Thumri Queen. Born on May 8, 1929, in Varanasi, to a zamindar, Ramdeo Rai, Girija Devi began taking music lessons when she was a child of five. Her first guru was vocalist and sarangi player Sarju Prasad Misra, and then Sri Chand Misra. Girija Devi always loved to recount her childhood days in Varanasi, where “I considered myself more as a boy, than a girl”. Rao encouraged her to learn swimming, horse riding and stick fighting, which she loved, but never had much interest in studies. “At the same time, I did play with dolls, and spent time arranging for my doll’s marriage,” Girija Devi said during an interview few years back. At that tender age, she learnt Khayal, Dhrupad, Dhamar, Tarana, Indian folk music and Bhajan. With Varanasi being a hub of both Hindu and Muslim classical singers, the elements from both

Trump ‘debasing’ US: Bob Corker President Donald Trump attended a lunch at the Capitol Hill with lawmakers to unify Republicans to rally around tax reform but the war of words overshadowed the meeting

T

he ongoing feud between Senator Bob Corker and Donald Trump exploded into public after the former accused the US President of “debasing” the country and if given the opportunity again, he would not support him again. Trump attended a lunch at the Capitol Hill with lawmakers to unify Republicans to rally around tax reform, but the war of words between Trump and Corker overshadowed the meeting. According to CNN, the President had earlier accused Corker, who is retiring, of blocking his party’s efforts on tax cuts. Corker said Trump has “great difficulty with the truth” and that “debasing” the US would be his prime legacy as President, adding that Trump has “proven himself unable to rise to the occasion.” “I think many of us, have tried to, you know, intervene, and I have had a private dinner and have been with him on multiple occasions to try and create some kind of aspirational approach, if you will, to the way that he conducts himself,” Corker said. “I don’t think that that’s possible. He’s obviously not going to rise to the occasion as president.” Asked if he thought the President was a role model for children, Corker, the chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, said, “No, absolutely not.” “I think the things that are happening right now that are harmful to our nation, whether it’s the breaking down of — we are going to be doing hearings on some of the things that he purposely is breaking

BRIEFS Trump plans to release US passes sanctions classified JFK docs bill against N.Korea WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has intended to allow the release of classified government documents about President John F. Kennedy’s assassination “subject to the receipt of further information”. Trump’s announcement came before an October 26 deadline set in law by Congress mandating the public release of the still-secret documents — including FBI and CIA files — barring any action by the President to block the release of certain documents, reports CNN. “Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK files to be opened,” Trump said.

WASHINGTON: Aiming to cut off Pyongyang’s links to the global financial system, the US House of Representatives has approved a bill to impose more sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear program. The bill approved this week received 415 votes in favor and 2 against, Efe news reported. the US Senate last week would add up to $1.5 trillion in fiscal deficit during the next decade, paving the way for Trump’s tax cut plan. The Trump administration, along with congressional Republicans, last month, released a framework for tax reform, which will cut tax rates for businesses and individuals but lacks details about how to consolidate the fiscal position on big tax cuts. The US national debt is over 20 trillion dollars, more than the country’s annual GDP.

WASHINGTON: US House Speaker Paul Ryan has said that House Republicans will unveil the longawaited tax reform legislation next week and pass the bill by the Thanksgiving week. Ryan laid out the timeline on tax reform during a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, Xinhua cited US-based political website the Hill as saying. The speaker also said the House of Representatives will pass the budget resolution for fiscal year 2018 which went through the Senate last week, paving the way for a vital vote on the tax reform. The budget resolution would allow Republicans to pass their tax reform plan in the Senate without needing to secure any support from Democrats. Without that special procedure, it would become much more difficult for Republicans to get the tax bill through the upper chamber. Ryan told reporters after the meeting of House Republicans that the House is on track to pass tax reform by the Thanksgiving week.

With Varanasi being a hub of both Hindu and Muslim classical singers, the elements from both

traditions enriched her repertoire and increased her knowledge. In 1949, Girija Devi’s performance was aired by the Allahabad station of All India Radio, which had then just started its broadcast. Recognizing her talent, the AIR authorities treated the 20-year-old at par with established singers Sehnai maestro Bismillah Khan, Hindustani singer Siddheswari Devi and table exponent Kanthe Maharaj.

“During that time there was no system of audition or grading of artists. But I found from the contract forms that I was paid the same amount of money as these artists.” Two years later, Girija Devi gave her first public performance at a music conference in Bihar’s Arrah, alongside the likes of Pundit Omkarnath Thakur and Kanthe Maharaj. In 1952, she paid her first visit

to Kolkata — which became her home two and a half decades later — to take part in the Sadarang Sangeet Sammelan. Groomed in the tradition of the Benaras and Seniya gharanas (lineage), Girija Devi was celebrated for her extensive collection of rare traditional ‘bandishes’. The best in her came out when she performed in the Purabi ang Thumri style, and helped in elevat-

ing the genre. Her renditions of semi classical forms like Kajri, Chaiti, and Holi also mesmerized the connoisseurs of Hindustani classical music. In 1978, after the formation of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, Girija Devi shifted base to the eastern metropolis, after prodding from the institute’s then director Vijay Kichlu. She immediately fell in love with the city. “There is a deep love for music and culture. The musicians get lot of respect. The boys and girls are very keen learners. “But studies take up so much of their time, they hardly have any free time to practise. In contrast, we used to practise for five/six hours.” In the early 90s, she also taught at the Banaras Hindu University, thus leaving behind a large number of students to carry on her legacy. She performed extensively within the country and abroad and was widely feted. Apart from Padma Shri (1972), Padma Bhushan (1989) and Padma Vibhushan (2016), the stalwart was also honored with the Tansen Samman by the Madhya Pradesh government, besides receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1977).

Rohingya crisis: Can India play a role? The government is not willing to accept an estimated 40,000 Rohingya refugees in India AROONIM BHUYAN, NEW DELHI

E

xperts are of the view that it is high time India mediated to find a solution to the burning Rohingya refugee crisis. “Our very wise Foreign Minister has a role to play and a sustainable solution should be found for the Rohingyas,” Rajiv Bhatia, former Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, told IANS. According to the latest figures issued by the UN office in Bangladesh, over 600,000 refugees have entered the country since August 25 after the Myan-

marese army launched a crackdown on the minority Rohingya community following a series of attacks on security personnel in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. The Rohingyas do not enjoy citizenship status in Myanmar and are sparingly given refugee status in Bangladesh. Bhatia added at the same time that since the problem arose on Myanmar soil, the solution too should come from there. “The Myanmar government should create conditions for the safe return of the Rohingya refugees,” he said.

Khin Zaw Win, Director of the Yangon-based Tampadipa Institute that works on policy advocacy and capacity-building in Myanmar, too is of the view that India should play a role. “The first thing New Delhi can do is to convene a tripartite meeting of India, Bangladesh and Myanmar,” Win said over phone from Yangon while pointing out that India and Myanmar enjoyed good ties. “China is trying to mediate, but I would rather prefer India to handle the matter. Remember there is no Rohingya in China, but they are there in India.”

There are around 40,000 Rohingya refugees in India, but the government has sent a clear message that it was not willing to accept them because of security concerns. The Supreme Court on October 13 asked the Centre to strike a balance between national security, economic interests and humanitarian considerations with regard to Rohingya women, children, old, sick and infirm, and listed the next hearing of the matter for November 21. Earlier this month, in an interaction with the media here,

Bangladesh High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali said that India, as the prime mover of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (Bimstec), should take greater initiatives to resolve the Rohingya crisis. The Bimstec regional bloc comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Bhatia said that India should lend support to the recommendations made in the report submitted by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan-led Advisory Commission on Rakhine State.

H

alf a star extra for this cold turkey of a comedy for not smashing expensive cars. Yes, folks. Rohit Shetty has actually made a Golmaal film without speeding cars crashing into one another. And that’s about the sign of maturity you will see in this franchise which seems designed for the mentally challenged. Car crashes are the least of the worries in this, the fourth and arguably the unfunniest film in the Golmaal series. There are other catastrophes awaiting our attention in this stretched-out horror of a comedy... Don’t look at me. That’s what this melange of comedy and horror aims

to be and ends up being neither. The writing is so frail as to be almost non-existent. From Frame 1 the narrative satu-

rates itself with bright inviting colours in the hope that they would dazzle us into surrender and acceptance.

There is, however, a quivering absence of credibility and self-control in the narration. Equipoise is non-existent in Shetty’s screaming scheme of entertainment. Throughout we see the team’s desperation to get noticed. Hence Tusshar Kapoor mimicry of a mute man’s monosyllabism is twice as insolent as compared to the earlier films in the farcical franchise.

He is the first from the Nepali community to establish himself as a successful entrepreneur in the highly competitive Chicago city. An inspiration for many Asians, Chicago based restaurateur Ramakant Kharel runs two popular eateries – An Indian joint Mt Everest and a newly opened Indo-Chinese place called Red Hot Chili Pepper in Evanston. Kharel has also been instrumental in bringing superlative Indian food as well as introducing authentic Nepalese dishes to the palates of Chicagoans. The seasoned food connoisseur believes that good food combined with great service is the key factor in service industry.

WHILE WORKING FOR RESTAURANTS DURING MY STRUGGLING PERIOD I NOTICED THAT IN INDIAN RESTAURANTS THE FOOD WAS GOOD BUT SERVICE WAS BAD, IN AMERICAN EATERIES THE SERVICE THAT WAS EFFICIENT BUT THE TASTE OF FOOD WASN’T THAT GREAT. MY DREAM WAS TO COMBINE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS AND OPEN A RESTAURANT THAT HAD EXCELLENT INDIAN FOOD AND EQUALLY EFFICIENT SERVICE

THE MAN WHO LIVED A DREAM-

RAMAKANT KHAREL

His newest venture is bringing back the nostalgic fusion flavors of Indian and Chinese cooking that many Indians have grown up eating. A dedicated food industry enthusiast, Kharel runs his business with a lot of passion and hopes to touch lives by feeding people great grub. His real life-story is no less eventful than a Bollywood movie. Restaurateur, Ramakant Kharel, met the girl of his dreams in his hometown of Kathmandu, Nepal. The two got married secretly as the families were opposed to the match. In a quest to give his love a better life, Kharel made the tough decision of leaving his wife back home to come to Chicago, USA. After realizing that his wife’s parents, unaware of their couple status were looking to get her married off, the two revealed their marriage and his wife joined him. The young couple struggled together and made Chicago their new home. After years’ of hard work and many jobs later, Ramakant Kharel rose to become one of the first successful entrepreneurs from Nepal in Chicago.

Today the couple lives happily in Glenview with their two children and is thankful for all the blessings life has brought along. Ramakant Kharel who is exceptionally busy these days managing the operations of his newly opened restaurant Red Hot Chili Pepper, chats with Hi India on everything from his struggles to his success story and the invaluable business advice his wife gave him years ago.

LIFE IN A FLASH BACK Ramakant Kharel who originally belongs to Nepal spent some of his early years in Delhi, India. Almost a global citizen by heart, Kharel admits that as a child when he was growing up in Delhi he always thought that India was his home and country. It was only after he grew up and his dad shifted back to their hometown in Nepal he realized that Nepal is his country too. Kharel laughs, “Today the same is with Chicago. The moment I came here I felt at home. I feel equally connected to India, Nepal and Chicago.” Ramakant Kharel’s life is an inspiring

journey that many immigrants who come to America go through. Detailing his life in his own words, Kharel says, “I came to Chicago back in 1991 as a student. Even though I came under extraordinary circumstances where I had secretly married my love and left her back home, I was determined to make my life a success over here.” Kharel recalls, “I enrolled myself in a college here but due to my financial crisis I could not complete my education. But being a drop out did not break my spirit and I was hopeful that with honesty and hard work I will succeed in life.” He says, “I had completed my Masters in English back home in Nepal when I came here so I had no language barriers. But there were other struggles, as I had no friends, family or guidance on how to shape my life. After my wife joined me in Chicago we undertook this journey together. During this time I worked in many restaurants as a waiter. I always had two jobs, if I used to work in one place during the day, I would work at another during the night. I worked extremely hard during those initial years

and while most of the time I worked as a waiter in many eateries I also dabbled in a few other jobs. I was a bellman at Intercontinental also and even though that job paid well, I had the desire to do something more. I had seen many people who worked, as bellmen would even retire in that job, as it would give them enough money. But my dreams were bigger for my family and myself. During those early years I also worked in customer service and I was also a salesperson. But the job of salesman was didn’t suit me as one had to lie a lot and I wasn’t comfortable with doing anything that was unethical to earn a living. I remember during this phase when I was wondering on what profession should I pursue, my wife gave me a valuable advice. She said that I should do something in food industry as all these years she had observed that I was the happiest when I was working in food business. I would say that advice changed my life.” Kharel listened to his wife and decided to invest his hard earned money in a restaurant of his own. He says, “By 2000 I had saved enough to open my restaurant.

RAMAKANT KHAREL RUNS TWO POPULAR EATERIES – AN INDIAN JOINT MT EVEREST AND A NEWLY OPENED INDO-CHINESE PLACE CALLED RED HOT CHILI PEPPER IN EVANSTON.

HIS NEWEST VENTURE IS BRINGING BACK THE NOSTALGIC FUSION FLAVORS OF INDIAN AND CHINESE COOKING THAT MANY INDIANS HAVE GROWN UP EATING

But then, there were other crucial decisions to be made too. Everybody advised me against choosing Evanston as a location for an Indian eatery as it was so close to Devon. But I went with my instinct and by the grace of God there was a line outside my restaurant on the very first day.” He adds,

He adds, “It’s a close, growing community. And many people come to me for advice as I was amongst the first to settle here.” He laughs, “I am amongst the older generations of Nepal here and in Chicago even though I am not that old!” Kharel has also been actively involved in

On the food side too, Kharel does not fail to bring the culture of his place closer to the people in Chicago. He says, “In my Indian restaurant while ninety pecent of menu is Indian there are also Nepali dishes as we would love people to come and try out the food and know more about it.” He

He chose Evanston as the location again for his new place as he thinks that the small University City has a lot of food aficionados and are looking to try more cuisines. In the future, Kharel hopes to open a culinary school to impart the immense knowledge of the food world he has gained

“Evanston was an untapped market as there was a demand for Indian food but no eateries to cater to that. I am glad that I was able to recognize that gap.”

philanthropic activities for his home country. Kharel has been involved with associations such as Non-Resident Nepalese (NRN), Nepal American Centre and Chicago Nepal Friendship Society. When the devastating earthquake struck Nepal, Kharel was involved with the organizations to raise funds for restoration. He says, “I represented Nepal American Centre at that time we met our target of $75000. Together the organizations were able to raise over $150k in Chicago. We all were carefully involved to ensure that the money is put to maximum benefit and it is heartening that a lot of rebuilding and restoration work was carried out.”

says, “We also chose the name Mt Everest as it was a landmark name from the region we belong to.”

over the decades of working.

BRIDGING NEPAL AND CHICAGO Kharel believes that he felt an instant connection to Chicago and the city too has been kind to him. On being one of the first from Nepali community to settle in Chicago, he says, “When I came here there were only about 15 Nepali families. This was 26 years ago, today that number has grown to around 10,000 people settled everywhere around the city and suburbs.”

THE NEW VENTURE About his new Indo-Chinese eatery, Red Hot Chili Pepper, Kharel says it is also a labor of love like his first restaurant. On why he chose Indian Chine fusion cuisine, he says, “I grew up in Delhi where Indo-Chinese fusion is very popular. When we came to Chicago we always missed that food and flavor. The Chinese that we get in America is bland and not the fusion we ate back home. And it’s not just me but a lot of people who grew up in India that have a certain nostalgia attached to that kind of food.” Through his new restaurant, Kharel hopes to serve people that familiarity of comfort food they grew up eating. The passion behind his work is showing results, as his place, which is just a few weeks old, is already attracting a steady stream of customers. Kharel says, “Those who come to dine here are returning back for more meals and that is the biggest compliment for any restaurateur.”

FITNESS FREAK Though Kharel is by his own admission a dedicated worker he is also a disciplinarian when it comes to his fitness routine. He believes just by working for your livelihood you are not doing enough for your body. He says, “One needs to push oneself out of their comfort zone and that is when the body starts reacting to exercise.” On many people who ask for his fitness advice, he says, “I always tell people to start slow. If I were to tell them to exercise for one hour on the first day itself they probably would need to be in bed for seven days. I would say one should start with as little as three minutes and keep on increasing it till you reach your goal of about half an hour an hour per day.” On a personal front, Kharel is happy at the way life has shaped up for him. He says, “My wife has been my support all these years and has inculcated wonderful values in my two children. She is a Krishna devotee and goes to ISCKON. I hope to continue doing good work and inspire many other people.

The shooter, described by police as a black man in his 30s with a large build and a beard, remains at large. He was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, an olive coat, jeans and white sneakers.

Robbery motive behind Trupal Patel’s murder BY A STAFF WRITER ONMOUTH, NJ -- Two suspects charged with the murder of Brick, New Jersey resident Trupal Patel allegedly plotted to rob the young Indian American of his drug stash before killing him. Joseph Villani and his girlfriend Raquel Garajau are currently facing trial for 13 counts of first degree felony murder, robbery, and possession of an unlawful weapon, among other charges. Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Stephanie Dugan noted in court last week that the couple had been dealing in cocaine, marijuana, and Ecstasy for months before Patel’s dead body was found in Shark River Park on February 22. The 29-year-old man had been missing since February 9. Nine months before Patel’s murder, he was arrested for possessing large amounts of marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. The police, who also found $61,000 cash at his

I told her I done it, but she had nothing to do with it. I want her out. Look, I told you guys what I did.” Villani was wearing Patel’s watch when he

repeated to police several times: “I did it.” But a grand jury found that Garajau, 20, also had a role in the killing, specifically instructing her boyfriend to bleach key evidence. Patel was born in Nadiad, India, and grew up in Brick,NJ. He is survived by his parents Rita and Bharatkumar Patel, and his brother Krut.

BY A STAFF WRITER HOENIX, AZ -- An Indian American man who pleaded guilty in an August 2016 cyber-attack on Phoenix-area 911 emergency systems must serve three years of probation. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says authorities will be able to monitor Meet Desai’s computer while he serves the probation term imposed on October 10 by a Maricopa County Superior Court judge. Four Phoenix-area law enforcement agencies reported receiving hundreds of hang-up emergency calls during the attack, which Desai told authorities was a prank gone awry. Desai was arrested in October 2016 after multiple agencies, including Surprise and Peoria police and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office, reported an influx of emergency call hang-ups between October 24 and October 26 last year. According to a sheriff ’s office statement, more than 100 hang-up 911 calls were recorded within a few minutes late on October 25. Investigators traced the calls and discovered they originated from a link posted to Twitter, according to the sheriff’s statement. The link was to a site named ‘Meet Desai’ and its domain was hosted out of San Francisco. When the link was clicked, it continually called 911 and would not let the caller hang up. The volume of calls had the potential to shut down 911 service across Maricopa County. Attorney General’s spokeswoman Mia Garcia says Desai cooperated with authorities, expressed remorse and had never been in trouble before.

High thyroid hormone levels can up irregular heartbeats NEW YORK: Individuals with higher levels of thyroid hormone in the blood are more likely to develop irregular heartbeat, suggesting that the levels could help identify individuals at risk for the condition, researchers say. Irregular heartbeat or atrial fibrillation occurs when the two upper chambers of the heart, called the atria, beat irregularly and faster than normal. Symptoms may include heart palpitations, dizziness, sweating, chest pain, anxiety, fatigue during exertion and fainting, and can cause stroke and heart failure, potentially associated with lifelong disability and even death. The findings showed that individuals with higher blood levels of thyroid

Keeping nerve damage in check LONDON: Researchers have successfully tested a new molecule that is capable of preventing the development of a nerve damaging condition caused by chemotherapy treatment in cancer patients. Researchers reveal that Ketamine treatment have the potential to help patients in long-term The drug is used to induce general anesthesia but also provides powerful pain control for patients with many painful conditions in lower doses than its anesthetic use. The researchers reviewed data for patients who received ketamine infusions for intractable migraine

headaches — migraines that have failed all other therapies. On a scale of 0-10, the average migraine headache pain rating at admission was 7.5, compared with 3.4 on discharge. The average length of infusion was 5.1 days, and the day of lowest pain ratings was day 4. Adverse effects were generally mild. The researcher said while his hospital uses ketamine to treat intractable migraines, the treatment is not yet widely available. “We hope to expand its use to both more patients and more conditions in the future,” Schwenk said. “Due to the retrospective nature of the study, we cannot definitively say that ketamine is entirely responsible for the pain relief, but we have provided a basis for additional larger studies to be undertaken,” Schwenk added.

Diabetics at higher risk of POCD IANS, LONDON

R

esearchers have found that older patients with diabetes may be at a higher risk of developing postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) than those who are not diabetic. POCD is a major form of cognitive disturbance that can occur after anaesthesia and surgery. “POCD is increasingly recognized as a common complication after major surgery, affecting 10 to 13 percent of patients, with seniors being especially vulnerable,” said Gunnar Lachmann of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine, Charite - Universitatsmedizin Berlin in Germany. “With POCD, a patient’s men-

In the study, researchers performed a secondary analysis of three studies, comprising a total of 1,034 patients (481 who had cardiac surgery, and 553 who had non-cardiac surgery), to examine whether diabetes was a risk factor for POCD.

The participants were split into two groups — half got semaglutide and the other half a placebo (dummy) substance for 12 weeks. After over four decades in the industry, Castelbajac, who has dressed up stars like Lady Gaga, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Beyonce Knowles and Madonna, says he still has the urge to get out of the comfort zone and challenge himself. Although he has never been to India, Castelbajac feels he is connected to the country in some way, and rues that his “paintings and art” are not exposed here. “One of my good friends is (fashion designer) Manish Arora. Don’t forget to moisturize, use highlighter for parties NEW DELHI: Get ready for the parties at twilight the right way. Do not forget to steam your face for rejuvenation, use a good moisturizer as basics and then opt for the right foundation and lip color before you step out, suggest experts. Naresh Arora, founder of Chase Aromatherapy, and make-up expert Shahnaz Husain have rolled out few tips: l Try and go for minimalistic makeup instead of going for harsh makeup. Highlight the desired areas instead of covering the whole face with foundation as that can make your skin look like plastic in dim light. l Take steam of Neroli or Geranium oil in the morning. This will rejuvenate your skin and make it glow naturally for you to look the best. l Make sure you use a rinse off conditioner after washing your hair

with lukewarm water. This will give your hair the final luster. Give your hair a massage with Jojoba or Lavender oil a night before and wrap them in a hot towel. Let the hair be in the steam for around 1520 minutes. Wash your hair the next day. l Glow as gold with marigold flower. Get 3-4 marigold flowers, smash it well with hand or some heavy instrument. Now add one teaspoon of honey with some raw milk. Mix it really well. Apply on your skin and within 15 minutes wash it away with lukewarm water to get glowing skin. l While choosing foundation, if you have a very fair ivory skin, go for beige with a rosy tint. If the complexion is fair, but pale (yellowish), avoid pink tones and go for beige or biscuit shade. Darker complexions look better with brownish beige.

MUMBAI: Designers Djey Tanwar and Megha Sikchi will showcase their new collection ‘Paradise Ocean’, inspired by nature, and Delhi-based designer Bani Khurana will launch her ‘Dainty Romance’ line at a forthcoming fashion event. Tanwar and Sikchi’s new red carpet collection under their label “The O.F.U” is in black, ice grey blue, gold, red, turquoise, read a statement. The designers have used mesh, sequins, stones and beads to showcase the elements from the sea like the corals and the reefs. They have added frills, spangles and tassles to the cocktail gowns, dramatic skirts with sculpted bodices, crop tops and shrugs. “Nature has always inspired us. It has a myriad of colors and elements. This time we decided to take different elements from the sky and the ocean and capture it in our new collection,” Sikchi said. “The collection is very comfortable and wearable and we are confident everyone is going to love it,” Tanwar added. Khurana will also showcase her new collection “Dainty Romance” at the India Beach Fashion Week 2017. The three-day fashion gala in Goa will start from this week. —IANS

Daydreaming shows your creativity IANS, NEW DELHI

W

orried about the habit of daydreaming or a wandering mind during meetings in office or at home? Take heart, it may not be as bad as you think, but a sign that you are really smart and creative, researchers say. The findings showed people with efficient brains may have too much brain capacity to stop their minds from wandering when performing easy tasks. “People tend to think of mind wandering as something that is bad. You try to pay attention and you can’t. Our data are consistent with the idea that this isn’t always true. Some people have more efficient brains,” said Eric Schumacher, Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, US. Higher efficiency means more capacity to think, and the brain may mind wander when performing easy tasks, he said. For the study, published in the journal Neuropsychologia, the team measured the brain patterns of people while they lay in an MRI machine. The researchers then used the data to identify which areas of the brain work together

The findings showed people with efficient brains may have too much brain capacity to stop their minds from wandering when performing easy tasks.

Individuals who reported more frequent daydreaming scored higher on intellectual and creative ability during an awake, resting state. “The correlated brain regions gave us insight about which areas of the brain work together during an

awake, resting state,” said Christine Godwin, doctoral student at the varsity. “Interestingly, research has suggested that these same brain patterns measured during these states are related to different cognitive abilities,” Godwin added. Individuals who reported more frequent daydreaming scored higher on intellectual and creative ability and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine, the researchers said.
