Trump stuns world Elected 45th US President in voters’ revolt against establishment; the news plunges the nation and the world into an abyss of uncertainty ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

D

onald Trumps triumph is a bundle of contradictions wrapped in irony that has turned many popular beliefs on their head. For one, Trump repeatedly claimed the elections were rigged, yet he won. The maverick outsider Donald Trump stunned the world by winning the US Presidency, the most powerful global job, as voters revolted against a smug, condescending establishment, rejecting Hillary Clinton — seen as the face of the status quo. His victory plunged the nation and the world into an abyss of uncertainty. He quickly tried to bring calm with a radical makeover of his style, ditching his brash style for a Presidential demeanor. At his victory rally, Trump called for national reconciliation, saying: “It is time for us to come together as one united people.” He offered his “pledge to every citizen of the country” to work for them and said he would seek from those who were critical of him their “guidance and help so we can unify our country”. Trump spoke of Clinton’s hard work in her campaign and declared she was owed “a major debt of gratitude for her service to the nation”. “The forgotten men and women of our country will no longer be forgotten,” he said to his voter base, which he described as a movement, not a campaign. “No dream is too big,” he said. “America will settle for nothing less than the best.” His message to the world was that while for him the US came first, “We will seek common ground, not hostility.” Earlier, Clinton phoned Trump

Thousands hit streets to protest Trump win New York:•Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in cities across the US this week in a bid to protest against Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election. In cities from Boston to Los Angeles, the demonstrators chanted anti-Donald Trump slogans, with many yelling “not my president, not today”, CNN reported. As many as 5,000 people were at a protest in New York, the police estimated. Among the issues were immigration and Obamacare. “I came out here to let go of a lot of fear that was sparked as soon as I saw the results,” protester Nick Pow-

ers said. He said he feared the realestate mogul will support stronger stop-and-frisk policies that would put many people in prison. He was worried that Trump’s victory would embolden sexist views. Many of the protests were in cities with large Democratic bases -Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, CNN noted. In Chicago, people walked down a normally busy Lakeshore Drive, carrying signs. Protesters in Austin, Texas, blocked a highway while students burned a flag on the campus of American University in Washing-

ton. In downtown Los Angeles, high school students crowded the steps of City Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Protester Brooklyn White was holding a sign that said “Hate won’t win”. The 18-year-old voted for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and was disappointed. At Berkeley High School in California, about 1,500 students walked out of classes on Wednesday morning. In des Moines, Iowa, hundreds of high school students who left class to protest of election results. In Phoenix, about 200 students from Carl Hayden High School marched to the state Capitol in protest.

to congratulate him and concede the Presidency to him. Clinton had shut down her celebratory meeting here at 2 a.m. without making an appearance at the event where thousands of her supporters fell into a sombre mood. Her campaign chief John Podesta came on stage at the Javits Center event and thanked the supporters and asked them to go home and get a good night’s sleep because at the late hour the results weren’t final. The Republican Party also performed well in Congress, retaining control of both Senate and House, even though the leadership has been at odds with Trump. This would give Trump a free rein to shape his administration and policies -- if he can reconcile with the party leadership. The entire intellectual, media, cultural and entertainment elite were ranged against him as were Wall Street and Silicon Valley leaders in addition to even many of his own party which makes his victory formidable -- and to them threatening. Trump’s style of mocking his opponents resonated with a large swathe of voters, who shared the disregard for the establishment, even if the elite held him in contempt. The US elections were in a way a mirror of the 2014 Indian election, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi confounded pollsters and pundits by defeating a political dynasty. And more recently, the British voters pulled off a similar coup with Brexit that passed against all prognostications. This was the second time Clinton was robbed of her chance to make history as the first woman elected President of the US.

Defeat painful, good luck to Don: Hillary ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON

D

emocratic nominee Hillary Clinton said she had congratulated her rival Donald Trump on winning the US presidential elections, and hoped he would be a “successful” President. With her sombre image reflecting her shock defeat to Trump, Clinton acknowledged that the

“pain” of her electoral loss would continue to rankle for a long time. “I have spent my entire life fighting for what I believed in,.. this loss hurts, but please never stop believing that fighting for what’s right is worth it,” Hillary told her supporters at her concession speech, where she was flanked by her husband and former President Bill Clinton and

running mate, Tim Kaine. Clinton, whose win would have made her the first woman president of the US, said: “I know we have still not shattered the glass ceiling (of becoming the first woman president), but someone will, and hopefully sooner than we know.” “To every little girl who is watching this, never doubt that you are deserving of every oppor-

tunity in the world,” she said. On Trump’s presidency, she said: “We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.” Clinton thanked US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. “To Barack and Michelle Obama. Our country owes you an enormous debt of gratitude. We thank you for your graceful determined leadership that has meant so much.”

Trump’s triumph:

Contradictions bundled in irony He’s a multi-billionaire, yet he has emerged as the voice of the working class and poor ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

D

onald Trumps triumph is a bundle of contradictions wrapped in irony that has turned many popular beliefs on their head. For one, Trump repeatedly claimed the elections were rigged, yet he won. Hillary Clinton has received 218,134 more votes than Trump, but he is the winner because he has won 279 electoral college seats to Clinton’s 228. This is because US presidential elections are not direct elections, but the choosing of electors from each state. He’s a multi-billionaire, yet he has emerged as the voice of the working class and the working poor. Only 38 percent of voters surveyed had a favorable opinion of Trump and 51 percent said only Hillary Clinton had the qualities of leadership and personality needed to become President. But they elected Trump. Progressives have railed against the money power they say the Republicans have deployed to control the political process. In reality, the Democrats outspent the Republicans in this election. According to the Washington Post, Hillary Clinton raised $1.3 billion against Trump’s $795 million as of mid-October.

Supporters of U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gather outside the New York Hilton Midtown, New York, the United States, on November 8. (Photo: IANS)

The irony is that financial advantage didn’t help her. During the primaries, Jeb Bush reportedly raised $162 million and lost to Trump’s measly $67 million. The Democratic Party has always claimed to be the party of the people, the poor ranged against the rich. But it was backed by titans of business and technolo-

gy and likes of super-rich George Soros. People like Sheldon Adelson, who promised $100 million didn’t come through with it and dropped just $10 million in Trump’s coffers. In fact, even Trump didn’t put up the $100 million of his own money that he said he would and settled for $66 million.

Democrat Clinton had a cosy relationship with Wall Street, for example collecting $1.8 million for speeches she gave at Goldman Sachs, according to CNN. Trump disdains Wall Street — and the feeling is mutual. Christian fundamentalists have backed Trump, whose personal life is littered with marital transgres-

sions and sexual sins unlike Hillary Clinton’s. Trump has sought out Hindus and his son Eric and daughter-inlaw Lara have visited Hindu temples, which is anathema to the Christian fundamentalists. Trump’s statements about deporting illegal immigrants and on immigrant crime have been turned by the media into xenophobia and blanket anti-immigrant sentiments. He is married to an immigrant and employs several immigrants at his facilities. Trump has emerged as the symbol of change and a new direction for the nation. But he is 70 years old and was elected President. Democrats have the reputation for being doves and Republicans for hawks. But in this election, Clinton was hawk and has left a trail of advocating aggressive foreign interventions in Iraq, Libya, Syria and the Ukraine. Trump is advocating a pullback and staying off foreign entanglements. In the attitude to Russia and Iran, there is, however, a reversal. Clinton was raring for a confrontation with Russia while supporting the Obama administration’s deals with Iran. Donald Trump is conciliatory towards Russia, but wants to scrap the agreement with Iran.

Triumphant Teflon Trump basks in Brexit glory IANS, WASHINGTON

W

hat a night it was! Defying pollsters and pundits, Republican Donald Trump won the American presidency on Wednesday, delivering a stunning rebuke to the establishment on both sides of the political divide. Tearing the political playbook to shreds, the brash billionaire shattered his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton’s dream to break the hardest glass ceiling and achieve her 16-year-old dream to return to the White House in her own right. By the time an upset former first lady conceded in the wee hours of Wednesday morning

after declining to deliver the traditional concession speech — Trump tapping into the anger of the working class, was well on way to capture 305 of the 538

16 top politicians with insults, calling women names, branding Mexicans ‘rapists’ and proposing a ban on the entry of Muslims. Pundits predicting his doom

It was almost a rerun of the Manhattan mogul’s hostile takeover of the Grand Old Party in the primaries after demolishing 16 top politicians with insults, calling women names, branding Mexicans ‘rapists’ and proposing a ban on the entry of Muslims electoral seats. were proved wrong then too, but at least the polls got it right that time. How did all the pollsters bar one — LA Times/USC Tracking — get it so wrong during Tues-

day’s nail biter that saw him losing big even at 8 p.m.? Democrats had only one word for their stunning defeat — “Comey”. It was FBI director James Comey, who had sent the Clinton campaign into a tail spin by rekindling her email saga with a “Diwali Dhamaka” only to clear her again two days before the poll. Trump did thank Clinton’s desi aide Huma Abedin and her sexting scandal embroiled husband Anthony Weiner — “Good job Huma, thank you Weiner” — after discovery of thousands of Clinton emails on their shared computer triggered the new probe. Huma and Comey might have contributed somewhat to Clinton’s losses, but what shattered

the prophets’ crystal ball to smithereens was what may be called the “Revenge of the Deplorables” as Clinton once called Trump supporters. The pollsters failed to see the surging crowds at Trump rallies or hear the voices of the “rednecks”, as Clinton’s hubby Bill dismissed the uneducated working-class white people toiling in the factories and fields in rural America. Her well-oiled political machine flush with a near billion dollar war chest could not prevent her electoral firewall in battleground states from Ohio to Florida, supposedly held by the cement of minorities — blacks, Hispanics and women — from crumbling.

World counts on US’ moral obligation at COP22

Explaining Trump’s rise and other strange thing

US has a moral responsibility and obligation towards the world. Like it or not, Trump has to honor that anyway, says Alden Meyer, Director of Washington’s Union of Concerned Scientists

American scholar Stanley Fish’s book on the significance of argument in our lives and actions

A

s the way has been cleared for Republican Donald Trump to become the next US President, delegates attending the COP22 here are counting on the “moral obligation” of the new American administration and its commitment to honor the Paris Climate Agreement. Trump — a climate change sceptic — has threatened to cancel the Paris deal if he comes to power. This would mean the threshold achieved for the Paris Agreement would be jeopardized as America accounts for 17 per cent of the global emissions, the biggest chunk after China. “Trump will soon be the most powerful person on the earth, but he doesn’t have powers to change the physics of climate change, emission or the global warming. If he will not honor the Paris Climate Agreement then it would have a negative impact on his credibility in the world leadership,” Alden

Meyer, Director of Washington’s Union of Concerned Scientists, told IANS on the sidelines of a US Climate Action Network event. He further said that the US has a moral responsibility and obligation towards the world. Like it or not, Trump has to honor that anyway, he added. “The US has a moral responsi-

four years for the process, the expert said. “For years, the US has been accusing China for the climate change. It would be hypocritical if it pulls out the of the Paris agreement action,” Li Shuo, an observer at COP22 and Policy Advisor of GreenpeaceChina, told the media here. He further stated that the Cli-

Trump — a climate change sceptic — has threatened to cancel the Paris deal if he came to power meaning the threshold achieved for the Paris Agreement would be jeopardized bility to cope with climate change. Evangelists, religious leaders and many members of the Republican Party are concerned. So, Trump can’t simply do as he likes,” Meyers contended. However, even if Trump opts out of the Paris Climate agreement — which entered into force on November 4 and became a law at Marrakech — it would take at least

mate Change action plans would not be impacted by the US stand and that Beijing would continue its commitment nonetheless. “The world shouldn’t wait for anyone and it should move on, no matter what. It’s important that countries like India and China remain committed to combat global climate change,” Li told IANS.

Katherine Egland of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAAC) “demanded” that the Paris agreement be honored. The experts said Trump has more reasons to “honor” the Paris Climate Agreement, not just because of the US obligation to the world but because of his promises to the American people. “Trump has promised a lot of jobs in the US through clean energy programmes, which means that the private investment has to continue. The President-elect has to recognize this. If he has to grow, he has to grow with the system,” Meyer said. Clementive Renevia, from the French Ministry of Environment, also said that Trump becoming President would not have any impact on the Paris Climate Agreement. “Our minster and COP21 President, Segolene Royal, has already said that Trump’s becoming the US President will not change anything. I feel that we should keep moving on,” Renevia told IANS.

NEW DELHI: Title: Winning Arguments — What Works and Doesnt Work in Politics, the Bedroom, the Courtroom, and the Classroom; Author: Stanley Fish; Publisher: Harper; Pages: 224; Price: Rs 399 It is the phenomenon that may explain a lot of “inexplicable” happenings in human affairs, including why many disbelieve climate change is occurring, how seeming success in winning domestic spats actually make things worse, or even how Donald Trump managed to gain the Republican nomination and eventually the US Presidency. The surprising basis for all these and more such issues, or for that matter, most of what we do in our lives, how we see and relate to our world and other people, are not always our convictions, or motivations like altruism or self-interest but “argument”, contends American literary scholar and law professor Stanley Fish in this book. And in it, he seeks to show how argument, which here does not connote its common meaning of a dispute, usually verbal and usually heated, but reasoning in support of some idea or action, is actually a means to win over popular opinion — and very successful one, as many cases show, including Trump’s triumph. “Argument is unavoidable, argument is interminable, argument is all we have,” he says, noting we live in a world of argument, where “arguments about the world come first, the world comes second”. Fish, whose other books include “Professional Correctness: Literary Studies and Political Change” (1999) and “How to Write a Sentence: And How to Read One” (2011), says he tries to do two things here — explain how arguments work in different contexts (the categories mentioned in the subtitle) while also engaged “in another project, not quite parallel, but not unrelated either” of “making an argument about argument and its relationship to the human condition”.

INDIAN AMERICANS SHINE

Kamala Harris, Pramila Jayapal and Raja Krishnamoorthi make it to US Congress ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

I

ndian Americans made a mark in Congressional politics with one of them becoming the first to be elected to the Senate and four others winning seats in the House of Representatives. Kamala Harris was elected from California to the Senate defeating fellow-Democrat Loretta Sanchez. Pramila Jayapal from Washington, Raja Krishnamoorthi from Illinois and Ro Khanna from California will join Ami Bera, who was reelected from California, in the House of Representatives. Tulsi Gabbard, who is a Hindu although not of Indian descent, was re-elected to the House from Hawaii. All Democrats, they range in age from 35 years to 52 years and represent the emerging class of leaders. “Winning a Senatorial seat combined with several Congressional victories, has made the community somewhat reach its goal of political involvement,” Thomas Abraham, Chairman, Global Organization of People of Indian Origin, told IANS. “This also help the US and India to come closer as a global partner in trade, investment, education, science and technology, military cooperation and fighting terrorism.” The victory of Harris is significant because senators are elected by the entire electorate in their states and California is the most populous state in the nation with 18 million

voters. The 52-year-old Harris, who traces her family roots to Chennai, is a lawyer by profession and was twice elected Attorney General in 2010 and 2014. Bera, a 51-year-old doctor, had come under a cloud after his 83year-old father, Babulal Bera, was found guilty of illegally funding his son’s election campaign and sen-

tenced to a year in prison. Prosecutors, however, cleared Ami Bera of involvement in his father’s crime and he beat the odds to defeat his Republican rival Scott Jones. A financial analyst by profession, Jayapal, 51, defeated fellow Democrat, Brady Wilkinshaw. A civil rights activist involved in immigrant and women’s rights causes,

she was born in India. She received the endorsement of Bernie Sanders, the insurgent socialist who ran against Hillary Clinton in the party primary. Krishnamoorthi, 43, who had advised President Barack Obama on economic issues when he was a Senator, received a personal endorsement and a promotional video from

Obama. He defeated Republican Peter DiCianni in a constituency that comprises Chicago suburbs. Born in India, he is a technology entrepreneur heading two companies and has also served as Illinois state Deputy Treasurer and an Assistant Attorney General on special assignment to fight corruption. Khanna, a former federal Deputy Assistant Commerce Secretary, won from the heart of Silicon Valley on his second try. With the endorsement of former President Jimmy Carter, he defeated sitting Congressman Mike Honda in a bitter rematch. Harris has a dual identity: She is also counted as an African American as her father is a Jamaican of African descent and she follows the Baptist faith. She would also become the second American woman of African descent elected to the Senate and joins two other African Americans in the Senate. After her parents divorced, Harris was raised by her mother Shyamala Gopalan, a cancer specialist from Chennai, giving her equal claim to Indian heritage. Gabbard’s Republican rival Angela Kaaihue launched bigoted attack on her with anti-Hindu statements and called her a “pathetic Hindu 1,000 gods leader.” Republican Party leaders condemned Kaaihue and withdrew support to her. The first Indian elected to Congress is Dalip Singh Saund, who won from California in 1956.

Trump’s triumph: Thumbs up for being politically incorrect AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI

T

he American voter has turned President Barack Obama’s expectation of a preference for wisdom and decency in the presidential poll upside down. Instead, the electorate’s choice has been for a person whose negative aspects range from racism to misogyny to vulgarity. If Donald Trump has nevertheless been preferred for all his seemingly glaring faults, the reason has to be much deeper than an intense dislike for “crooked” Hillary Clinton, who has also been dubbed a “criminal” by The Donald, as the victorious Republican candidate’s first wife used to call him. Considering how Trump had no hesitation in calling Mexican immigrants rapists and had an

African-American dissenter thrown out of one of his rallies, it is obvious that he deliberately chose to be politically incorrect in order to appeal to what can be called the base instincts of the voters.

US has any number of them. He also exploited the same inward-looking attitude by accusing China as well as India of stealing jobs from America. Hence, his rejection of the phe-

Trump exploited the same inward-looking attitude by accusing China as well as India of stealing jobs from America. Instead of displaying “wisdom” about, for instance, global warming, or reinforcing the standard aversion towards the nuclear or the so-called “doomsday” weapons, he appealed to the chauvinistic, anti-foreigner mindset of the American public by blaming China for the production of greenhouse gases and asking his policy advisers to explain why the Bomb cannot be used although the

nomenon of globalization, which also drove the Brexit voters in Britain, and the threat to do away with trade treaties unless they favor the US. Trump reflects, therefore, the upsurge of Right-wing demagoguery which has little time for diplomatic niceties not only in the matter of relations between nations, but also about the relations between different racial groups.

The people in Trump’s camp have been dismissive of the charge of the support extended to him by the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan, arguing that the latter are a minuscule group of little consequence. But the fact that Trump represents the traditionally insular WASP

(white Anglo-Saxon Protestant) factor is undeniable. It has been argued that his support base comprises the largely uneducated white middle class which has borne the brunt of the loss of jobs in America because of the preference of the corporate giants for “outsourcing”.

victory across the world, Republican Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by a wide margin to become the 45th President of the world’s oldest democracy on November 8. PARIS: French President Francois Hollande congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election, but warned that the American vote would open a period of uncertainty. “I congratulate him as is natural between two democratic heads of state,” Xinhua news agency quoted Hollande as saying. “This American election opens a period of uncertainty, that showed the necessity of a strong France, and a united Europe, capable of making itself heard wherever its interests are challenged,” he added. In a televised address, the French president said France would be frank and vigilant in talks with the new American administration as “what is at stake is peace”. As French presidential election is approaching in a context of growing public disappointment, Hollande said US mirrored “concerns that are provoked by the world’s disorders.”

hinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Republican Donald Trump on being elected as the 45th President of the US and hoped that two leaders would work together to expand bilateral ties. In his message, Xi said both the countries have the special responsibility of maintaining world peace and stability and boosting global development. “I highly value the relations between China and the United States, and I am looking forward to working together with you to expand China-US cooperation in every field, at the bilateral, regional and global levels, on the basis of the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, with differences controlled in a constructive manner, so as to push ChinaUS relations further forward from a new starting point, better benefiting the peoples of the two coun-

tries and other countries,” he said, according to Xinhua news agency. To develop a long-term, healthy and stable China-US relationship

is in line with the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries as well as the general expectations of the global commu-

nity, Xi said. Earlier in the day, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said Beijing was ready to work with the new US government. The ties between the top two economies of the world have taken a hit over various issues like the South China Sea and THAAD deployment in South Korea. Despite being a China-basher, Trump has been preferred by Beijing over his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton who in the past has angered the Chinese over various issues ranging from human rights to the South China Sea dispute. The volatile Trump, who accused China of “raping” the US in trade and threatened to levy 45 percent tax on Chinese products, is said to be more suitable to Beijing because of his inexperience. However, experts find it difficult to predict how the relationship between the world’s two largest economies would unfold.

esides congratulating Republican Donald Trump as US President-elect, India Inc. hopes key policies that have bought the two countries closer in recent years will continue under him, with better access to Indian skilled labor and merchandise. “We hope challenges relating to mobility of skilled labor, market access for pharmaceutical products from India and for financial services institutions and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) will be addressed,” CII said in its reaction this week. “It would also be important for critical dialogues such as the US-India Strategic and

Commercial dialogue, CEO Forum, Trade Policy Forum, etc., to continue charting pathways to augment our partnership,” the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) added. Assocham said apprehensions linked to Trump would certainly prove wrong and India Inc. looks forward to taking the bilateral economic engagement to a greater level under the new administration. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) reacted in a similar vein. “The election of Donald Trump comes at a time when relations between India and the US are witnessing a paradigm shift marked by significant convergence on strategic perspectives and enhanced economic engagement,” the chamber said.

‘Surgical strike’ on black money India has decided to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes to help the government fight corruption, black money and counterfeit currency India’s cash market in chaos

IANS, NEW DELHI

A

s part of sweeping steps to battle black money, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes will cease to be legal tender from midnight of Tuesday. The Prime Minister said in a televised address that all the 500 and 1,000 denomination notes can be deposited in banks and post offices between November 10 and December 30. They can also be exchanged across the bank counters by showing government-issued ID proof. New Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 denomination notes will be issued, he said. “The existing 500 and 1,000 denomination notes can no more be used for transactions,” Modi said, speaking first in Hindi and then in English. “They are now only mere paper.” The Prime Minister said these measures will help the government to fight corruption, black money and counterfeit currency, which he alleged was funding terrorism. The Union Finance Ministry said the move to withdraw Rs 500, Rs 1,000 currency notes is the biggest “surgical strike” by the government to curtail black money in the economy. Modi said this was being done to tackle the menace of black money in the country, which he said had sapped the economy. He also said that ATM withdrawals will be restricted to Rs 2,000 per day till November 11, after which this limit may be increased slowly. Withdrawals from bank accounts will be limited to Rs

NEW DELHI: Tens of thousands of people struggled in paying for daily essentials on Wednesday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi invalidated the large currency notes of Rs 500 and 1,000 in a bid to crack down on unaccounted wealth, corruption and terror financing. The impact of the decision was evident as shopkeepers refused to accept the large currency notes available with common people mostly to serve their daily cash requirements.

Indians mob banks to deposit currency

No harassment over small deposits: Jaitley

NEW DELHI: Millions of anxious people armed with Rs 500 and 1,000 notes mobbed banks across India on Thursday to exchange or deposit them after the government decided to take the bills out of circulation. Officials and residents said people began assembling outside banks even before they opened, a day

NEW DELHI: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said nobody would be harassed over smaller deposits — less than Rs 2.5 lakh — as people began thronging banks nationwide to exchange or deposit Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes that have been demonetized. “Nobody will face questions or harassment for small deposits,” Jait-

10,000 for the first few days, he said. Banks have also been ordered to remain shut on Wednesday. Modi said that for medical reasons, the old notes will continued to be accepted till November 11. He also said that retail petrol pumps will accept such notes till November 11, after which they will have to keep a register of such notes for some time. Opposition parties including the Congress, CPI-M and AAP on

after they were closed for business following Prime Minister Narendra’s Modi’s surprise announcement on Tuesday night. People jostled to get lower denominations or new currency notes as a sweeping cash crunch caused all round chaos and inconveniences to buy even simple daily essentials.

Wednesday questioned the decision to demonetize Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes while the government said that tax collections will go up considerably in the medium-tolong term as more people will come under the tax net due to the move. The Communist Party of India-Marxist dubbed the move as “posturing” while the Aam Aadmi Party described it as a “Tughlaki farman” of the government. Congress Vice President Rahul

Gandhi questioned the move asking how replacing Rs 1,000 notes with Rs 2,000 notes was going to help fight black money while former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram supported the move but raised issues about its implementation. “Once again Mr Modi shows how little he cares about ordinary people of this country - farmers, small shop-keepers, housewives - all thrown into utter chaos,” Gandhi said.

ley told reporters while inaugurating the two-day Economic Editors Conference here. “It is only those Arun Jaitley with large amounts of undisclosed money who will have to face the consequences under existing laws,” the minister said.

However, defending the move, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said: “In the medium and long term, direct and indirect tax collection will increase. Lot of currency outside the banking system perforce will have to get into the system.” “But how much currency in the market comes back into the banking system, we will come to know only with time,” he said at a press briefing.

SC ruling: Amarinder Singh India, Britain sign MoUs on IPR resigns from Lok Sabha IANS, NEW DELHI

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh on Thursday resigned from the Lok Sabha in protest against the “injustice” to the state by the Supreme Court in its verdict on sharing of water from the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal by states including Punjab and Haryana. All his party legislators also resigned from their assembly seats. The Supreme Court on Thursday held as unconstitutional the state’s 2004 law intended to deny Haryana its share of the Sutlej-Yamuna water.

Amarinder Singh sent his resignation to the Lok Sabha Speaker and sought a personal meeting next week, party sources said. The Congress legislators who resigned would meet the assembly Speaker in Chandigarh on Friday to personally hand over their resignation papers, a senior leader told IANS. In his resignation, Amarinder Singh said he had decided to quit as MP from Amritsar “as a mark of protest against the deprivation of the people of my state of the muchneeded Sutlej river water”.

“A research conducted in 18 Indian states, including in the northeast showed that existence of

ICFRE. Officials said that those plants are listed under code red of IUCN. Of those threatened medicinal plants, 100 face an active threat and the wild population has reached a level of “no return”, that means they are on the verge of extinction. The situation has forced industry to use “substitutes” of such plants, with relative low effects, he said. “The herbal plants are needed in high quantities but they are not available in the wild,” Goraya said, adding that it is a matter of concern in India.

Under the new visa rules the British Home Office recently announced, skilled IT workers applying for visa under the tier-2 intra-company transfer (ICT) category would be required to meet 30,000 pound salary threshold after November 24. amil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa may be discharged from Apollo Hospitals in less than 15 days, a senior AIADMK leader said on Monday. “In less than 15 days she might be discharged. All her vital parameters are under control. She is being given physiotherapy exercises,” AIADMK spokesperson C. Ponnaiyan told IANS. Queried about the decision to shift Jayalalithaa from the critical care unit (CCU) to a private room, he said: “The difference between the two is the existence of emergency equipments.” A decision on shifting her to a

cured and it was up to her to decide when to go home, Ponnaiyan said everybody wanted Jayalalithaa to return home as a completely fit person.

AIADMK leaders feel it was better for Jayalalithaa to be in the hospital for some more days under a controlled environment so that there was no relapse of the infection. “At home she is the master. Further she may get back into the thick of things and as a result there may be some strain which is not there in the hospital now,” Ponnaiyan explained. He said Jayalalithaa was now able to sit when the respiratory systems were removed. She was also taking semi-solid food. According to Ponnaiyan, nobody — barring doctors, physiotherapists and nurses — were allowed inside the CCU where Jayalalithaa was warded.

Showcasing a mixture of various cultures and traditions, DIFF 2016, apart from being a four-day independent film festival, also gave those attending a taste of a variety of Indian dishes. Held at the scenic locales of McLeod Ganj, DIFF 2016 started with filmmaker Raam Reddy’s

Kannada drama film Thithi on November 3 and went on to feature a bouquet of independent films, documentaries and shorts. These

facilitated exchange of thoughts on social and cultural issues between independent filmmakers, aspiring filmmakers, foreign attendees and film enthusiasts. Be it internationally acclaimed Indian films and documentaries like Highway, The Violin Player, Kammatipaadam, or That Day After Every Day or gripping movies of foreign filmmakers like Singapore-based director Boo Junfeng’s Apprentice and Iranian director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami’s Sonita — the festival gave a clear view of the universal approach that these filmmakers take to make their films appeal globally. The fest was pioneered by filmmakers Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam to provide a platform for people to watch independent films. “We started with the idea of bringing quality cinema to the

mountains. The response that we received this year was fantastic and even better from the previous editions. Apart from the local audience, the tourists also had a great time. Most of the films witnessed packed screenings,” Sarin told IANS. Some other movies which struck the right chords with the audience included A Korean in Paris (South Korea), Didi Contractor: Marrying the Earth to the Building (Switzerland), Brothers (Poland), Victoria (Germany), The Last Dalai Lama? and What’s in the Darkness (China). Besides movies, DIFF 2016 also came out as a cultural gathering where audiences from different parts of India and various countries were seen sharing their views. Another interesting aspect was foreign tourists flaunting Indian ethnic attires like sari and salwar suit at the movie gala.

The incident involved popular actor Duniya Vijay, who swam to safety and even had a life jacket, and two others — identified as Anil and Uday — who drowned after jumping off the helicopter. John agrees that injuries happen despite complete safety and security, but it is a department which needs increased attention in the Indian film industry.

“It is sad this has happened and coincidentally, in my case, with all the precautions, I still hurt my knee. I’ve always gone about town saying that the action standards in the country are not up to the mark

and you cannot blame the action director (for it),” added the 43year-old actor and producer who had gone through a knee surgery during the shoot of his forthcoming film Force 2.

‘Why endanger human lives when there’s VFX’ MUMBAI: Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor has reacted to the drowning of two actors during the shooting of a Kannada movie, by questioning the idea of putting human lives in danger when the facility of visual effects is available.

“RIP. Two stuntmen drown whilst filming a stunt from a chopper in a Kannada film. When VFX facilities available, then why endanger human lives,” Rishi tweeted. Two male actors named Anil and Uday drowned in Thippagondanahalli (TG Halli) lake, about 40 km northwest of Bengaluru, at the confluence of Arkavathy and Kumudavathi rivers in Ramanagara district. They were enacting a stunt scene by jumping from a helicopter. The stunt act is the climax of a scene in the upcoming film Maastigudi where the hero (Duniya Vijay) chases the two villains trying to escape in a chopper from the lake shore. The hero too hops onto the chopper, which flies over the lake’s backwaters. As seen from the film footage, aired on local news channels, in a fight between the hero and the duo the hero pushes both the actors from the chopper and joins them in the reservoir to carry on the fight. —IANS

‘Raakh’: Revenge drama from sex comedy specialist IANS, MUMBAI

V

endetta is the flavor of the season, at least for the short film category. Just the other day, Adil Hussain was seen chilling in his avatar as a revenge seeker who had poor Vaquar Shaikh tied up, battered, bruised and dying in an abandoned warehouse. It’s deja vu time now with Milap Zaveri, so far known for writing sex comedies, who hurls a steely revenge saga at us with a surehanded narrative style that is just short of being considered a clutter breaker for the purveyor of cheesy comedies. The problem is, we’ve seen this

before and as mentioned, quite recently. In the short film Bandhi, Adil Hussain was far more powerful in his vendetta. The victim there was gagged and rendered

voiceless. The portrait of vendetta was far more chilling because justice was being meted out by only one of the two players. In Milap’s darkly illuminated

portrait of vengeance on a loop, the presence of the wrongdoer comes across more strongly than the man who has been wronged. Vir Das is the white collar husband whose wife (Richa Chadha as video-projected images on dingy walls) has been raped and murdered by the man who is now tied to a scaffold-like wooden projection, all beaten, battered and sure to die. How did that puny God-fearing wife-loving man get this ferocious animal into this godforsaken place, tie him and beat him to almost his last breath? Breathing fire and spewing salacious vitriol, the rapistmurderer tells the infirm avenger, “Your wife was screaming in pain

and pleasure as I raped her.” Yup, this guy deserves to die a painful death just like all the others who attack women on the streets or in homes. But hang on. The wimpy helpless avenger guy has other plans. His revenge takes off to another plane altogether which is a little hard to swallow and even harder to accept. And when Vir Das sat down to have what he described as his ‘last supper’, I again remembered Adil in Bandhi. Distraught minds when faced by their wrongdoers, get hungry? Nonetheless, Raakh has much to recommend itself. It’s shot in a grimy, squalid location that represents and nails the characters’ state of mind.

In the film, Sirish plays a tank commander, and he has already started shooting in Arjungarh army base in Rajasthan. omposer Adhi of Hiphop Tamizha, who is making his Telugu debut with upcoming Ram Charan-starrer Dhruva, says he couldn’t have asked for a better launch to his career in Telugu filmdom. “I’m really fortunate to be working with Ram Charan in my first Telugu debut. I couldn’t have asked for a better launch, and I hope this collaboration paves way to more opportunities. I’m really happy with the response to the album,” Adhi told IANS.

The film’s album was released last week and it has been received quite well. Dhruva, a remake of Tamil blockbuster Thani Oruvan, has been directed by Surender Reddy. he Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council announced on Tuesday that the schedule for the 2017 season of the lucrative Twenty20 cricket tournament has been finalized and the players’ auction will be held in Bengaluru on February 4. Next year’s IPL, which will be the final edition under the current 10-year contract, is scheduled to begin on April 5. The IPL governing council meeting which was held at a city hotel on Tuesday, was attended by chairman Rajeev Shukla, Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) President Anurag Thakur, BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke, former India captain Sourav Ganguly, Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA) President Amitabh Choudhary and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) President M.P. According to the Lodha panel, there must be a gap of two weeks between the IPL and an international series. However, talking to reporters after the meeting, Shukla insisted that the IPL governing council has not violated the apex court’s directives. “IPL 10 will start on April 5 next year. The auction will be held in Bengaluru on February 4. We had to keep a gap of one week after the Australia series,” Shukla said. Shukla also said that Mumbai,

Pune and Nagpur, which were deprived of holding IPL matches this year following a controversy over water usage for maintaining outfields and pitches as Maharashtra suffered severe drought, will host IPL matches in 2017. Shukla said that water harvesting technology will be employed at stadiums in Maharashtra to ensure minimum wastage during IPL matches. “We intend to generate our own water to maintain pitches and outfields during the IPL,” he said.

Diwali celebration at BAPS temple, Bartlett

BY A STAFF WRITER ARTLETT, IL -- This October, lights and candles will be lit, sweets will be prepared and shared, and warm greetings and well wishes will be exchanged as millions of Hindus around the world celebrate the festival of lights, Diwali. Diwali presents Hindus around the world with an opportunity to renew the rich traditions of their roots with great fanfare. Diwali is an ancient Hindu festival commemorating many historical events, including the return of Bhagwan Shri Ram to the kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. His return brought about a period of enlightenment within the kingdom and its people. The tradition of self-enlightenment continues today as Diwali presents an opportunity for self-improvement and progress through reflection within. In marking the season, volunteers of all ages came together to organize a Diwali celebration at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Bartlett, IL on October 31. Colorful intricate designs called rangoli, decorative oil lamps and Annakut offerings of vegetarian food before the sacred images of God filled the atmosphere with a renewed spirit of the festival. Over 11,000 people experienced the culture and traditions of the auspicious holiday as they offered prayers, well wishes, and resolved to mark the New Year with spiritual enlightenment. A beautiful exhibition entitled ‘In the joy of others’ was prepared by the youth of BAPS to celebrate the inspiring life and legacy of Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Throughout his life, he has untiringly remained in the service of others restoring villages from natural disasters, building new schools, hospitals and community

B

centers, and strengthening societies on the foundation of compassion and peace. His humanitarian efforts have garnered widespread international respect, while his personal spirituality has been an inspiration for millions around the world. He has guided many youth on brilliant career paths, while keeping cultural values intact. BAPS youth take great measures to organize and conduct this annual event for the younger participants. Children enjoyed the Diwali fare filled with games, activities and sweet treats during the Kid’s Diwali Celebration on October 16. Arts and crafts stations were set up to illustrate traditions and teachings of Diwali. A spectacular light and sound show also took place on the steps of the mandir on the evening of October 30 to commemorate the selfless life of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who lived by the words of his life motto, “In the joy of others lies our own”. Hundreds of devotees and well wishers alike relished the divine atmosphere of Diwali as they immersed themselves in

the traditional songs and delicious cuisines of the holiday. Many distinguished guests were also in attendance for the Diwali celebrations, impressed and personally touched by the inspiring messages portrayed in the exhibition. “The impression made upon me is mostly compassion,” said Tom Cullerton, IL State Senator. “The caring, the selflessness, the fact that there is a mission beyond just a self serving mission or just getting people to believe in him, but actually expanding out into entire communities. “And not focused on one single sect of people or one single basis but really trying to empower others to be better people, empower others to help other people which is something we don’t always see in today’s culture. “And to have somebody who not only embodies that but preaches it, and tells everybody to do that, and has a large group of people who follow and believe everything about that, and tries to live that same mission is absolutely wonderful to be

a part of.” Similar sentiments were conveyed by the Lieutenant Governor of Illinois, Evelyn Sanguinetti. When asked to describe Pramukh Swami Maharaj in one word, she simply said, “Servitude. That’s what he was about. Service first. Never putting himself first. But God and the people first, and that’s a big deal. Also impressed with his humility and meekness.” The exhibit invoked a personal connection with Pramukh Swami Maharaj for Raja Krishnamoorthi, Candidate for the IL House of Representatives (8th District). Pointing to a panel referencing the over 700,000 letters Pramukh Swami Maharaj has spent time personally reading and replying to, Krishnamoorthi said, “I’m proud to say I’m two of those letters.” When describing Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s legacy, IL State Senator, Michael Connelly also offered his thoughts saying, “An amazing man. There is an exhibit where people were allowed to write something to him to thank him, and the first thing I saw was ‘thank you for making me a better person. “And at the end of the day, that is what his message was, that is what his life was. And if we can all dare to follow his example the world would be a very better place.” The Diwali festivities brought devotees together to serve a common purpose, develop spiritually, and please their guru His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj and inspirer, His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj. Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired the celebration of Hindu festivals at BAPS centers worldwide to keep the rich traditions and culture of India alive with emphasis on the true historic and spiritual purpose of Hindu festivals.

community news South Asian Americans are more active than ever in 2016 election

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL - South Asian Americans are more engaged than ever in the 2016 election, in part due to increased outreach from non-partisan community organizations, as well as the national focus on issues that impact the community. Organizations have been doing direct outreach and organizing events to educate the community, leading to record engagement on Election Day. A coalition of organizations that includes Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago, South Asian American Policy and Research Institute (SAAPRI), Indo-American Center (IAC), and Chicago Desi Youth Rising (CDYR) reached out to South Asian American voters this election season by phone and in-person in their neighborhoods. Viveka Ray-Mazumder, a staff member with Advancing Justice | Chicago, knocked on doors of South Asian voters in Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates with a group of high schoolers from CDYR. “South Asian community members were very welcoming, and were happy to have this engagement from us, particularly youth

C

from CDYR,” said Ray-Mazumder. “The voters that we spoke to cared most about immigration and Islamophobia. The fact that candidates at all levels are speaking very loudly about immigration is motivating our community to participate.” “As Asian Americans we must be vocal about our issues,” said Ray-Mazumder. “Our issues are important and we must demand justice for our communities.” Immigrant rights organizations also hosted a nonpartisan candidates town hall featuring Raja Krishnamoorthi on October 26 (Pete Dicianni was invited but did not attend). The Town Hall, held at the Palatine Gurdwara, addressed issues such as immigration reform, health care, the economy, voting rights, and more. After the election, the groups will turn their attention to Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). The measure passed in Springfield before being vetoed by the Governor. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago is a leader in the effort to enact AVR, which would empower thousands of Asian Americans to vote by removing barriers and simplifying the registration process.
