Jindal to run for Prez elections? Louisiana Guv forms an exploratory committee to ‘test the waters’ for a national campaign to key early voting states in recent months, testing a message centered on the need to “restore the American Dream,” which he says President Barack Obama’s “weak leadership” has diminished.
ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
L
ouisiana’s Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal has taken another step towards a possible 2016 presidential run by forming an exploratory committee and launching a national website, www.bobbyjindal.com. Though Jindal has said he still isn’t an official candidate yet, he is expected to formally enter the race after the Louisiana Legislature adjourns on June 11, according to local Times Picayune newspaper. Forming an exploratory committee allows a potential presidential candidate to “test the waters” for a national campaign, raise money, take out-of-state trips or conduct polling for a potential presidential campaign. “For some time now, my wife Supriya and I have been thinking

Boost for US-India defense cooperation ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
R
eflecting the solid bipartisan support for building U.S.India relationship, the U.S. House of Representatives last week passed a key measure calling for expansion of U.S.-India defense cooperation. In addition to urging an overall expansion in defense ties, an amendment to the FY2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) calls for the U.S. to welcome the role India plays in providing security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The amendment was offered by Ed Royce, Republican chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, its top Democratic member Eliot Engel, Democrat Ami Bera among others. The measure also wants the U.S.
Indo-US bilateral ties got a fillip after President Obama’s visit to India this year. to work cooperatively with India on matters relating to common defense, vigorously support the implementation of the U.S.-India Defense Framework Agreement, as well as support the India Defense Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI).
This was the first vote held by the House on US-India relations since the 2014 Indian elections, and comes on the heels of the defense framework advanced by President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January this year.
Hillary Clinton will do a good job on foreign policy: Poll ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
A
mericans are more likely to say Hillary Clinton would do a good job handling foreign affairs as president, but they believe her greatest strength would be race relations, according to a new poll. The former First Lady, who is the leading hopeful for Democratic nomination for the 2016 race to the White House, also gets generally mixed reviews of her tenure as secretary of state under her 2008 rival President Barack Obama in the latest Gallup poll.
Hillary Clinton
Given her background including four years as America’s top diplomat, along with eight years as a U.S. senator and eight years as First Lady in
the White House, Clinton’s prior service could be seen as a major plus for her presidential credentials. Americans give Clinton a net rating on foreign affairs (percentage good job minus percentage bad job) of +13, which is roughly the same as healthcare and the economy, but behind the +22 rating she receives for her potential to deal with race relations. Americans are least positive about the job Clinton would do in handling two broad issues: the way government in Washington operates and the distribution of income and wealth in the U.S.
But despite his experience as governor and a compelling personal background as the Americanborn son of Indian immigrants, Jindal has struggled to make an impact in national polls of potential Republican candidates, the Washington Post noted. “Jindal would likely face an uphill battle
for the nomination if he decides to run with a Republican field already extremely crowded with six declared candidates and another half-dozen expected to announce in the coming month,” it said. Former Florida governor Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker have already launched aggressive fundraising efforts, in part with the help of allied super PACs which can raise and spend unlimited sums of money to advocate for or against political candidates. On the Democratic side besides former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, presidential exploratory committee have been formed among others by former senator Jim Webb and Senator Lincoln Chaffee, former Rhode Island Governor Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has also said he would be seeking Democratic nomination.
Wooing Indian Americans, US lawmaker offends American Indians WASHINGTON: A veteran US house member who stirred a major controversy by making a gesture mocking native Americans or American Indians, has apologized even as a shocked Indian-American community expressed outrage. California Democrat Loretta Sanchez who is opposing the state’s Indian-American attorney general Kamala Harris for the party’s nomination for a 2016 Senate run said that candidates “who don’t hide behind the handlers sometimes misstep. Speaking to an American Indian group in Anaheim on May 16, she was caught on mobile phone video raising her hand in front of her mouth and making a whooping sound like a typical native Indian ‘war cry’. In talking about how she was confused about an upcoming meeting with an Indian American, she said: “I’m going to his office, thinkin’ that I’m gonna go meet with woo-woo-woo-woo, right? ‘Cause he said ‘Indian American.’” Sanchez apologized on May 17 at the state convention, saying “in this crazy and exciting rush of meetings yesterday, I said something offensive and for that, I sincerely apologize.” “Those of you who put yourselves out there like I do, who open your heart, and who don’t hide behind handlers you know how hard it can be,” she said. “It’s hard to put yourself out there and do what leaders need to do day in and day out. Sooner or later, we all make mistakes. We’re all human.
California Democrat Loretta Sanchez But that is the only way to truly connect with people. You can’t change the world from behind a desk.” Harris called the action “shocking” and said there was no place for it in public discourse. Her spokesman Nathan Click said: “the attorney general thinks Congresswoman Sanchez was right to apologize for her comment. “I was taken aback, as many others in the audience were, at her insensitivity, which immediately alienated non-Indian guests as well,” said Sayu Bhojwani, New York City’s former commissioner of immigrant affairs. However, Aaruni Thakur, one of the hosts of the reception, said Sanchez’s overall speech was “very positive” for the Indian American community.

rime Minister Narendra Modi on May 19 outlined his vision of an inclusive Asian century fueled by India’s progress and wooed South Korean businesses to ‘make in India’ in a big way. Winding up his two-day visit to South Korea, the final leg of his three-nation visit, Modi addressed the Asian Leadership Forum and also the India-Republic of Korea CEOs Forum. He visited the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard, one of the biggest ship construction companies in the world, in Ulsan where he spent over an hour. Modi held talks on May 19 with top South Korean CEOs, including LG Electronics’ Kim Jin-hong and POSCO chief Kim Jin-il and Hyundai Motor Co’s Chung Jinhaeng. On May 18, Modi had held talks with President Park Geunhye after which the two sides inked seven agreements, including for avoidance of double taxation. Seoul also offered to provide $10 billion for infrastructure projects in India, including smart cities and railways. Addressing the Asian Leadership Forum, that was also attended by President Park, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Sheikha Mozah of the Qatar royal family, Modi said India “is the new bright spot of hope” for the region and the world and India’s progress will help make the Asian dream “a bigger reality”. Modi said “Asia will succeed more when all of Asia rises together” and said the prosperous countries must be prepared to share their resources and markets with those who need them. “India is located at Asia’s crossroads. connected Asia,” Modi said. “An Asia of rivalries will hold us back. Asia of unity will shape the world,” he said. Later, addressing the IndiaRepublic of Korea CEOs Forum, Modi praised the spirit of entrepreneurship of the Korean people. The prime minister said there was a lot of scope for improvement in bilateral trade. “Your car-making and our designing capabilities can be put together. Your steel-making capacity and our resources of iron ore can be put together.” Earlier, Modi on May 16 stressed the shared legacy of Buddhism
between India and China and their commonalities, including their large population, and said the two countries together could not only solve their problems but also be a force of good for the entire world. Modi, who wound up his threeday visit to China by attending many functions in Shanghai, devoted the morning to business events. He met the CEOs of top Chinese companies, including Jack Ma of Alibaba and top smartphone maker Xiaomi’s head Lin Bin and invited them to ‘make in India’. With China’s rich cultural heritage and the ancient links of Buddhism forming a grand backdrop,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 14 held “extremely productive” summit-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping during which the border issue, the widening trade imbalance and “strengthening trust” were high on the agenda. During his visit to Mongolia, the two countries forged a strategic partnership, building on the “bonds of hearts and minds” over the “barriers of distance”. Modi on May 17 became the first Indian prime minister to visit the landlocked northeast Asian nation which has declared India as its “third neighbor” as well as “spiritual neighbor”.
BEIJING: India and China on May 15 inked 24 agreements after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing. Big Fat Indian Wedding We love to live life king size and that reflects in our weddings, whether it’s a three-day affair or a seven-day extravaganza. When Indians plan their weddings they go all the way, says Shilpa Raina...
t
hanks to Indians’ love for exuberance, pomp and during extravagance weddings, the billions worth Indian wedding industry continues to flourish notwithstanding the global economic crisis. “The wedding industry is recession proof!” declared Divya Gurwara, founder of Bridal Asia, an annual wedding exhibition held in India. “I believe this is the only industry that has not been affected by recession because a wedding is a onetime affair and no one wants to compromise on the quality. Hence people don’t mind spending.” Even though no reliable figures are available about the size of the Indian wedding industry, various estimates place it at Rs. 500-600 billion ($10-12 billion), with an annual growth of 25 percent. Weddings have always been an elaborate affair for Indians, but with the advent of wedding planners it has become much more lavish and stylish. The planners now arrange theme-based, customized weddings, often inspired by Bollywood. The $60 million wedding of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter in a five-star hotel in Paris set the best example of the “big fat Indian wedding”. It also featured in the Forbes list of ‘Billionaire Weddings’ in 2004. USbased 34-year-old hotelier Vikram Chatwal, scion of multi continen-

Chatwal’s wedding celebrations lasted a week, with 10 parties spread out over three Indian cities and attended by over a thousand guests. Delhi-based Mohan, who had planned Chatwal’s wedding, said: “It was the biggest wedding that I ever conducted.” Though Indian weddings are an elaborate affair anyway, NorthIndian weddings are extravagant. “People spend because they have to prove a point that the wedding hosted by them was better than others and for this, they don’t mind spending at all. This trait is more visible in North India where people like to show off,” Lalita Raghav pointed out. Wedding planner Mohan agrees with her and added: “Well yes, the
weddings of North Indians are definitely a large affair because of their lifestyle. They like to live life king size and that reflects in their weddings as well.” The wedding season is at its peak from November to March every year and thanks to Bollywood stars, the bridal wear market flourishes unabated. “Earlier people used to go to select shops or markets that were famous for bridal wear. Later people wanted to wear what their favorite actor or actress wore in a movie,” designer Ritu Kumar, who specializes in couture wear said. It is just the beginning. Today, a middle-class wedding comes to about Rs. 5 million ($107,850) minus the jewellery. People have the money and they are splurging. There will be more weddings like Chatwals soon, all we have to do is wait and watch.

Bridal Couture
Legacy redefined
From design to color, fabric to work, there has been fascinating transformation in the warp and weft of Indian bridal couture as brides today embrace the waves of change, says L. Jyotimala
t
hink Indian bridal wear and the defining image is that of a heavily embroidered red or maroon sari or lahenga. But, not anymore! There has been a subtle yet decisive transformation in the warp and weft of bridal couture. Brides are embracing the waves of change. No longer do brides stick to the traditional attire — for they now often adopt radical chic. The all-time favorite red is now nearly passé while gold, silver, cream, peach, fuchsia, orange, emerald green, candyfloss pink and Naples yellow have become the defining colors. Driving this change are designers who are experimenting with a variety of designs like crochet work, patch work, bead work, digital prints, sequins, lace and mirror work. Not too long ago, traditional silk was the most preferred fabric for bridal wear. But now, materials like chanderi silk, brocades, georgette tweeds, crepes, satins and French chiffon are becoming in-style. Blouses have become sexy and stylish with beautiful designs, embroideries, aari work, and silver or gold bead works. And, if you don’t mind flaunting a bit, there are lots of sexy blouses like bikini blouses, and halter-neck blouses for sangeet and cocktail parties. A recent bridal wear event ‘Bridal Asia’ in Delhi showcased some of the leading trends for would-be brides and grooms. Launched in 1999, Bridal Asia is one of India’s biggest annual wedding fashion extravaganzas. Enveloped by the fantasia, Hi India gives you a sneak preview of what is hot and contemporary this season. Color, precious stones and stunning accessories — these were the stuff that dreams were made of! Every design, be it apparel, jewelry, bag or accessory, was unique. Among Indian designers who showcased their collections were Ritu Beri, Rina Dhaka, Falguni &
Groom Watch
Shane Peacock, Gourav Gupta and Reynu Taandon. Apart from the Indian designers, the event also had Pakistani designers Honey Waqar and Jannat Shahid. Their were jewelry collections from well-known names like Dolly Oberoi, Payal Gupta and Nemichand Bamalwa & Sons. Apart from the bridal wears and jewelries, Bridal Asia also had well-known accessory designers and wedding decor stylist. The event showcased designs f r o m Malini Agarwalla of Malaga Cr i m zo n Accessories by Sonali Dalwani and Baruch – well known for accessories and bags.
Tradition & Modernity
Prices are generally high but people don’t hesitate to let money speak. There are the ‘budget items’ too, which are relatively cheaper, but no less spunkier or stylish. “The price for my saris starts from Rs. 36,000 ($700) and goes up to Rs. 1.5 lakh ($3,000) whereas price ranges from Rs. 90,000 ($1,800) to Rs. 2.5 lakh ($5,000) for my lahenga collections. But people don’t really mind spending big for the D-day of their life,” fashion designer Reynu Taandon told Hi India. The speciality of her work this season is the ‘Gota’, named as ‘Wedlock’. Gota work is done using woven gold and silver cloth on some other fabrics. She uses lots of traditional Rajasthani handicraft as well. Her collection varies from lehengas, drape sarees and Anarkali suits to heavily embroidered salwar suits. “In most weddings, Indian brides are all decked up in bright clothes. But I have used different colors like
orange, red, cream, fuchsia and maroon for the perfect color combination, which would give the bride an elegant look,” the designer told Hi India. “I work entirely on adding elegance to the bridal wear but without sacrificing its traditional value,” she added.
Beads, sequins & threads
Golden beads, sequins, thread work, and artwork are in. Taandon’s collection tends to center around fabrics like chanderi silk, brocades, georgette and French chiffon were used. One of her ‘budget buys’ was an emerald green sari, studded with beautiful beads. Taandon’s Sherwanis for grooms are contemporary. From fabric to the design, every yard reflects the warp of elegance.
Chikankari, embroidery & paisley
It’s a leading trend today. Wellknown designer Rina Dhaka, who also showcased her collections at Bridal Asia, uses a lot of chikankari, embroiderie anglais, crochet work, patch work, paisley, digital prints, sequin embroideries, lace and mirror work. And all draped in red, green and golden. Tradition isn’t far behind. Gaurav Gupta, for example, specializes in blending Indian tradition with a touch of the contemporary, redefining Indian bridal couture. Peacocks, flowers and lotuses form his leitmotif. Chunnis neatly attached to blouses and tube blouses inside the sari are some of his hot numbers. Indian bridal wear never had such abundance. Blending tradition and modernity, the designs, fabrics and colors hold a mirror to a world of amazing fantasia.
The apparels come in beautiful designs and colors for the very special day. If you are go for western style ̶ a full‑sleeved shirt, a tie, a coat and matching trousers would look perfect. Accessories like cufflinks, chains, rings or bracelets can add charm to the outfit. For Indian style, most of the grooms opt for sherwanis. Nowadays, the color of the sherwani is not anymore confined to the traditional off‑white. Other colors like red, blue, black and even pink is in. The new trends marry ethnic and contemporary styles. The designs are graceful and elegant. In kurtas, one can opt for calf‑lengths as well, which can be nicely complemented with jodhpuri pants or tight‑fit churidar, jutties, choga and an embroidered stole.

Bridal Couture Jewelry
Beyond tradition...
Jewelry takes on a newer dimension in bridal attire as elegance and style replace traditionally chunky designs, says L. Jyotimala
b
ejeweled is of the essence. More so in Indian weddings, where more is often less. Traditional Indian bridal jewelry comprises bangles, rings, nose rings, Maangtika, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and anklets. Gold has always been a bridal favorite. But now, brides want a change: sophistication, elegance and chic is in when a girl goes to choose her designs. Stone and other materials are replacing the traditionally favored chunky creations in the yellow metal. Platinum, white gold and even silver are increasingly the preferred metals of choice. On the other hand, colored gemstones, pearls and precious as well as semiprecious stones are also widely used to create the perfect design. However, diamond — the jewel of it all — continues to fascinate and beguile the bride. Designer jewelry is the vogue as was proved at the recent Bridal Asia event in New Delhi. A variety of jewelry collections from some of the
best Indian designers stole the show. Dolly Oberoi, a top Indian designer, chooses to blend tradition and modernity. Her recent collection consists of designs, such as the Ranihar — a concept that is slowly dying. Among her designs, one that caught the attention of almost everyone browsing her display was one of her latest creations — a traditional Ranihar. A 38-inch-long necklace, it is set beautifully on 18-carat gold, with colorful stones like saffire, emerald and topaz. The theme of her latest collection is ‘dance like a peacock’. “In this collection, I am trying to revive the tradition and I have used stones like kundan, emerald and diamonds for the season’s bridal collection,” Oberoi said. In keeping with the trends, is the classy, elegant and affordable. In her latest collections, ‘Jahanara’, meaning ‘Queen of the World’, Payal Gupta uses South Sea pearls and has them handcrafted. All in all, elegance is the key. The jewelry collection from Nemichand Bamalwa & Sons is an absolute masterpiece. Different shapes and cuts of diamonds are
used in the collection, giving a classy look to the designs. They basically use lots of Round, Emerald, Pear, Heart, Oval, Baguettes, Princess, Carre and other fancy cut Diamonds diamonds as well. So, there is a near-radical change in traditional bridal jewelry. The chic and savvy is in as bridal jewelry takes on a zany shimmer.

Tips
Themes
with a Difference
Every couple wants to have a unique, and special wedding day... Traditional weddings are still captivating but to incorporate something different with a dash of panache, will make it memorable for all
i
ndividual is in. Urban Indian couples, organizing their own weddings, prefer to tie the knot in their own individualistic style. Theme weddings are increasingly getting popular in India for couples want the day to reflect their identity, style and panache. A well-planned theme wedding gives you the chance to personally interact with each of your guests and enjoy their company. And the wedding turns out to be an ‘unforgettable’ experience for everyone, especially the guests, who will depart with sweet memories of a rather ‘personal’, ‘different’ and ‘interesting’ event. Hi India takes you through some of the more popular wedding themes in India. But a theme wedding is all about letting your imagination run wild!
The Fairy Tale
Here’s a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity for you to experience your ‘Prince Charming’ and ‘Cinderella’ fantasy (complete with exotic surroundings!!!) Food: Serve food that’s fanciful and dreamy. Have each course served amidst dry ice to conjure up
the magical. Location: With the wave of a magic wand and preferably with the help of a professional wedding decorator, an event room can be transformed into a mini palace. Decor: Think ice carvings. Hire a professional decorator to create the aura of an enchanted kingdom. Outfits: Sport a trendy, non-traditional wedding outfit. The groom should ideally adorn a tuxedo. Guests: Persuade your guests to arrive in costumes. Request key people in your wedding party to go all out in displaying their garb!
The Fort Wedding
Get married at one of the most famous forts in India — the Neemrana Fort or the Nalagarh in Rajasthan or the Raj Vilas Palace in Jaipur. The experience of having your wedding solemnized in regal and medieval splendor could give you the ultimate ‘high’. Food: A medieval style feast with unusual but traditional dishes and traditional wine cocktails. Decor: Arrange a Rajasthani mela complete with mehendi walas, astrologers, jugglers and a puppet show. Set torches aflame
and hire a traditional band. Outfits: Dress up like a Rajasthani prince and princess, complete with crown and tiara. Guests: Persuade your guests to get into the spirit of the moment by wearing clothes with mirror work, silver jewellery and brightly colored Rajasthani turbans!
Candlelight Romance
A plethora of candles can make all the difference. Organizing a candle-lit event could be an elegant yet cost effective way of creating an ambiance of serenity and romance.
Say It With Flowers
Pretty, colorful flowers could transform the atmosphere of the venue. Preferably, select one particular flower and try to create all the decorations with the same. Alternatively, you could consider combining different flowers of similar shades. The flowers could be used to decorate the mandap, the reception area, the home, the cars and even the food area. The same flower(s) can be used for the bouquets too. As a token of remembrance, the guests could be presented the same.
First of all be pretty sure about what wedding theme would suit you and your partner. Do not simply go by instinct; research well to see what you actually require. Also, determine your budget. If you opt for a royal theme or a romantic or fantasy theme, then the overall budget could be high because this kind of theme requires heavy decor as one cannot cut down on the backdrops. Once you have zeroed in on your theme, look for the feasibility of its ambiance. And, of course, acceptance from your elders. A wedding is a social as well as religious ritual, so you might as well select a theme that could also suit the elders as well as the kids. Preferably avoid themes that are regarded as inauspicious, a ghost theme for example. Themes can be employed for all occasions, pre-nups, the main event and the post-wedding events. Or, they can be used in both the pre-wedding and the reception ceremonies. If a wedding planner is planning your ceremony then he or she will plan it according to your budget. However, if you are doing it yourself, detailed research on ambiance and other aspects like menu and attire will be crucial. One very important factor in a theme wedding is the size of the venue. An open venue would require more elaborate decor and lighting and thus could be more expensive than an indoor one. This kind of decor basically requires a lot of pillars and columns with intricate designs. So, reassess your budget and availability of venue before you finalize some theme. The theme of the wedding should not only be limited to the party hall. It should be showcased in the home decor also. If the theme is one of a traditional and ethnic wedding than the decor should have colors, which are very Indian like orange, red, maroon, or bandhni drapes along with gold and zari tissue surrounding the entire living area. A floral theme is also a very good option as flowers always look beautiful and classy. Fresh flowers like roses, orchids, carnations, marigold and gerberas can give a very unconventional look to the usual decor. If you want a western wedding theme, then go for the pastel shades — mauve, peach or sea blue and pink. Combine them with silver and fresh flowers like carnations, baby roses or lilies. Last but not the least. Whatever be your theme, some homogeneity in the ambiance is of the essence, so that it looks real and delicious.

From exotic to authentic, from regional to international, wedding banquets have turned spectacular, says Nandini Banerjee
t
oday’s urban Indian weddings are a picture of national and international integration. In earlier times, brides and bridegrooms would be of the same caste, perhaps the same geographic state, and most assuredly the same religion. Modernization of tradition, a range of socioeconomic factors, and a burgeoning and prosperous middle class have changed this. And nowhere are these changes more evident than in the wedding feast. From exotic to authentic, from regional to international, wedding banquets are truly spectacular. Indian weddings are known for the sumptuous platter. In India, the wedding day banquet is hosted by the bride’s parents. Typically, the menu, though largely reflecting the host’s choice, does take into account recommendations made by the groom’s family as well. North: In a North Indian wedding, a lavish spread is the order of the day. For starters, guests are treated to finger foods and other snacks along
with soft drinks, coffee, soups, juices or mocktails. This goes on till the pheras when the wedding ceremony is over. Thereafter, the main course is served, followed by the desserts. Apart from the usual Dal Makhani, Shahi Paneer, Pulao, Mixed Veg and Chicken, the feast might include other North Indian dishes as well. West: In a typical Maharashtrian wedding, food is served on freshly washed banana leaves. While eating, guests are seated on chatais (straw mats) or wooden planks. The meal is usually vegetarian. Onion and garlic are off limits. Desserts typically include basundi, jalebi or shrikhand while the drinks surely include Mattha (buttermilk). The meal ends with a paan. As for a Gujarati wedding, you will find the snacks and drinks followed by the main course, comprising Rotli (bread), daal or kadhi, rice and sabzi/shaak, apart from other dishes. East: In a Bengali wedding, the main feast which follows the snack, finger food and drinks, typically comprises Potol Posto (veg), Muri Ghonto (non-veg), Macher Kaalia
Impress your guests by serving one of these stylish cocktails. Champagne is a great classic, although other alcoholic options could include Pimms, whiskey, mulled wine and bucks fizz. Water should always be available as a nonalcoholic option, as well as something a little more exciting such as a fresh fruit juice or cordial. If you’re looking for a real show-stopper, however, a cocktail is a must — whether you opt for a classic champagne cocktail or something a little more contemporary. You might even decide to have a cocktail that coordinates with your color scheme. And, if you’re a serious cocktail fan, splash out on a mobile cocktail bar for your evening party.
(fish), Begun and Bhaja (veg), apart from Roshogulla (Sweets) and Mishti Doi (sweet curd). On the other hand, in a Bihari wedding feast, the starters and the main course are largely defined by an array of sweets. South: In South India, weddings are usually held in the morning. The emphasis is largely on the main course, usually a traditional fare comprising rice, vegetables, sambar, curd-based vegetarian delicacies, a variety of pickles, pappadoms, ghee and buttermilk. Non-vegetarian food is discouraged though Christian weddings cannot do without a range of ‘meaty’ delicacies. The food is served on plantain leaves. The dessert is usually payasam. North East: The feast in a northeastern wedding will have non-vegetarian dishes in finger foods, snacks and the main course. Fish is important, especially in the wedding platters served in Tripura and Assam. Rice and rice-based dishes occupy pride of place in the main menu. Desserts are also largely made out of rice.

Best of India
p
icture a honeymoon trip for newlyweds and then try to figure out what matters most on these trips. True — it is romance and love, passion and eroticism, a sense of belonging and lust that take on the mood during an ideal honeymoon trip. A honeymoon in India is akin to being thrown under a spell — one that will transform those special moments into a cache of special memories. Indian honeymoon destinations offer unique settings for couples. It is the serenity combined with some surreal beauty that will heighten your experience. The fragrance of wild flowers or the cool and fresh sea breeze work as an aphrodisiac as you explore the beauty of the place and the seclusion in the comfort of your luxury suites or the solitary alcove in the garden. India is a land of sensuality. The
Khajuraho shrines with their erotic sculptures in various sexual poses and lovemaking scenes are an ode to some of the most primeval and ennobling notions of life itself. The love tribute of Emperor Shah Jehan to his wife Mumtaz Mahal — Taj Mahal — is universally regarded as the ultimate Temple of Love by couples who are passionately in love with each other. Local folklore says that only those who have true love in their hearts can see the real beauty of this white marble wonder! Presenting a wide variety amidst its tourist attractions, right from the beach state of Goa to the beautiful hill station of Kashmir to the backwaters of verdant Kerala, the country witnesses a heavy rush of honeymooners every year from abroad. The hospitality of Indian people, who believe in ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ (a guest is like god) only serves to add to the rush.
Honeymoon
travels
KHAJURAHO
Khajuraho is an architectural marvel. A complex of 85 temples, it is believed to have been constructed by the Chandela kings between 950 and 1050 A.D. Of the original 85 temples, however, only 22 survive today. These temples present the zenith in Hindu temple architecture of India. Enjoy your honeymoon in Khajuraho with a temple tour of the Western Group, which depict the most sensual art forms on their walls. Also visit Panna National Park, Raneh Fall, Ken Nature Trail, Ken Garial Sanctuary, Banisagar Lake and Ranguan Lake, among others.
AGRA
The land of the Taj Mahal requires no introduction. Other monuments include the Agra Fort, Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, Itmad‑ud‑Daulah's Tomb and Chini‑Ka‑ Rauza.
GOA
Goa is known as the Beach Capital of India and will make your honeymoon an irres‑ ristably seductive experience. Goa has long sun drenched beaches and fabulous old churches and convents.
KERALA
Kerala is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations of India, which attracts not only Indians but also foreigners. Kerala is also referred to as 'God's Own Country' because of its lush green coconut groves, fair weather of the picturesque hill stations, sandy beaches, romantic cruises on the backwaters, Ayurvedic massages and water sports. Local art and craft, regional dances and specialized Ayurvedic treatments will convert you. There is so much to explore, admire and absorb in Kerala that you wish your trip to Kerala would never end.
DARJEELING
Darjeeling is indeed one of the most beautiful valleys in the world and is an ideal location for newly‑weds who want to spend some quality time together. The green and cool environment coupled with some cool breeze and splendid views would definitely make you the happiest couple together in the lap of nature.
KASHMIR
Known as 'Paradise in India', Kashmir is the perfect place to set out on the journey called marriage. The backdrop of the Himalayas and the great lakes make for the perfect setting for a great honeymoon.
SHIMLA
Called the ʻQueen of Hill Stationsʼ, Shimla has an old‑world colonial charm with places, such as Christ Church, Mock Library, Gaiety Theater, Town Hall and General Post Office. Also visit the Rashtrapati Niwas earlier known as the Viceregal Lodge and Himachal State Museum. For the sacred‑hearted, there are lots of temples in Shim‑ la such as Jakhoo Temple, Sankat Mochan Temple and Taradevi Temple. Adventure sports like hiking, leisure walks, mountain climbing, river rafting, skiing and trekking, is very popular in this hill‑station.

A tale of two global roamers
Though Modi is being criticized for his foreign visits, but Manmohan Singh was nearly as well travelled as Modi, in terms of days abroad CHAITANYA MALLAPUR, NEW DELHI
P
rime Minister Narendra Modi is executing his “fasttrack diplomacy” — as his government calls it — with gusto: Including his current China visit, he will have been abroad for 53 of 365 days in 17 countries during his first year as prime minister. That’s not very different from Manmohan Singh, who spent 47 of 365 days in 12 countries during the first year of the second term of the United Progressive Alliance, or UPA-II (and 30 days during UPAI). Modi promised a strong foreign policy to the people of India after he took oath on May 26, 2014. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by leaders from eight neighboring nations. But there is a striking difference between the two PMs: Modi has made more state visits — official visits to countries — compared to
summit-oriented visits by Singh Modi has been criticized for his foreign visits and days spent out of the country. But Singh was nearly as well travelled as Modi, in terms of days abroad. Modi intends to use public diplomacy to project India’s soft power. In terms of visits by heads of states to India, Modi’s first year saw 23 visits compared to 30 and 29 visits during Singh’s first year of his first and second terms respectively. A total of 57 bilateral treaties/conventions/agreements were signed during Modi’s first year (May 26, 2014 to December 31, 2014), compared to 37 and 22 bilateral treaties during Dr. Singh’s first year of UPA-II (May 22, 2009 to December 31, 2009) and UPA-I (May 22, 2004 to December 31, 2004), respectively. India’s foreign aid to other countries during Modi’s first year increased 15.84 percent. This was down by 10.81 percent during
Singh’s first year of his second term, against an increase of 29.32 percent during the fist year of his first term. Foreign direct investment (FDI) registered a growth of 18.58 percent in 2014-15 over 2013-14. During Singh’s first year of his first term, FDI saw an increase of 47.12 percent but declined 17.72 percent
during his first year of second term. Foreign exchange reserves in 2014-15 registered a growth of 12.29 percent over its previous year. The same saw an increase of 5.46 percent and 26.17 percent, respectively, during Singh’s first year of his two terms. In terms of dollars, exports and
imports declined 1.23 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively, in 201415 from 2013-14. In Singh’s first year of his second term, exports and imports declined far more sharply, 4 percent and 5 percent, respectively. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, under Modi, has restored some purpose and direction to India’s foreign policy, missing during the UPA’s second term, according to Uttara Sahasrabuddhe, professor for international politics at the University of Mumbai. The breakthrough in the IndoU.S. nuclear deal during Singh’s first term was the chief highlight of his foreign policy. During his second term, foreign policy lacked direction, Sahasrabuddhe said, as his leadership was not accepted within the party and was largely driven by the bureaucracy, unlike Modi, who exerts greater control over foreign policy. Regular missile tests maintain India-Pakistan status quo ABHEET SINGH SETHI NEW DELHI
L
ast month, India tested its indigenously-developed 3,000-km Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) Agni III, while Pakistan tested its 1,300-km Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) Ghauri. Both missiles are part of an evergrowing arsenal capable of reaching every corner of rival territory (including India’s Andaman Islands) and carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. Ironically, these tests are also a good way of ensuring the two countries do not go to war. Nuclear weapons carried by ballistic missiles are strategic weapons of mass destruction meant primarily to scare and deter, usually ending in strategic stalemates between countries that possess such arsenals. The possibility of “mutually assured destruction”, or MAD, also
prevents their use on the subcontinent. India’s ballistic-missile program is driven by the threat it perceives from its nuclear armed neighbors Pakistan and China. Almost 17 years after becoming nuclear powers, the arch rivals each test fired ballistic missiles. India has developed/is developing the Prithvi and Agni series of
surface-to-surface ballistic missiles. The Prithvi series comprises three short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) with a range of 150-350 km, capable of targeting major Pakistani cities, such as Lahore, Sialkot, the capital Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Agni I and II, with ranges of 700 km and 2,000 km respectively, are
capable of targeting almost all major Pakistani cities, including Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Peshawar, Karachi, Quetta and Gwadar. The Agni II is a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM), first tested in April 1999. It allows India to attack all of Pakistan, although it falls short of major targets within China. Like Agni I, it too is highly accurate and is road and rail mobile. Agni III, IV and V, with their longer ranges, might be able to reach all of Pakistan, but it can be safely said that they are directed more towards China. Pakistan’s Hatf series of ballistic missiles have been developed–and is still under development–keeping India in mind. These missiles have varying ranges starting from 70 km, and go up to 2750 km. Some of these missiles are variants of existing Chinese and North Korean ballistic missiles, according to a
report on Pakistan’s ballistic missile program by the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore. Of these, the operational SRBM Ghaznavi is a shortened version of the Chinese M-11 missile and has a range of between 270 km to 350 km; this means it can target Ludhiana, Ahmedabad and the outer perimeter of Delhi. The recently-tested Ghauri is an MRBM, with a claimed range of 1,300 km and is “clearly and unambiguously North Korean in origin”, according to the NIAS report. The report adds that the missile is deployed and can target Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhopal and Lucknow. The Shaheen-III, a road-mobile IRBM was tested this March and has a claimed range of 2,750 km. Pakistan has reportedly developed Shaheen III to prevent India from attaining a nuclear secondstrike capability from Andamans.

raq’s government has called for volunteers to fight against Islamic State and help retake the city of Ramadi, BBC reports said on May 20. A cabinet statement said a voluntary recruitment drive was necessary to fill shortages in squads in the west of Anbar province. Thousands have fled Ramadi since its capture by IS on May 18. Meanwhile, the U.S. National Security Council said it was considering “how best to support local ground forces”. Thousands of families have been displaced by the violence in Anbar province in recent
Barack Obama, National Security Council assess strategies on IS WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama met his National Security Council to discuss strategies for the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist outfit in Iraq and Syria, Efe news agency reported. The meeting follows what the White House has termed a “setback” which led to the jihadis taking control of the Iraqi city of Ramadi in Al Anbar province. “The president met with his National Security Council to discuss the situation in Iraq and our strategy to

fghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see both countries working closely together to fight terror, officials have confirmed. In addition, Afghanistan and Pakistan will fight terrorism jointly and both institutions will investigate the accused behind any terror incident within their respective countries. The agreement signed in Kabul last week was also officially announced by the Pakistani InterServices Public Relations (ISPR) via its social network late on May 18 night. “MoU signed by ISI and NDS includes intelligence sharing, complementary and coordinated intel operations on respective sides,” the ISPR tweeted. The firstof-its-kind deal between the two
intelligence agencies followed the May 12 visit to Kabul by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The signing of the ISI-NDS agreement was the latest in a series of steps that Pakistan and Afghanistan have taken since the installation of the National Unity govt. “The memorandum of understanding between Afghanistan and Pakistan is not a new thing. In the past, both institutions had such agreements, but now the focus of this agreement is mostly on jointly fighting terrorism,” says Ajmal Abedi, spokesperson of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
address the threat of IS in Iraq and Syria,” the White House said in a statement on May 19. Obama received information “about the latest developments in Iraq and support to Iraqi security forces and tribal fighters that respond to the situation in the province of Al Anbar”. He also praised Iraq’s decision “to accelerate the training and equipping of local tribes in co-ordination with authorities in Al Anbar, increase Iraqi army recruitment and train the local police,” said the White House.
BEIRUT: At least 170 Islamic State (IS) militants have been killed since Sunday in airstrikes carried out by the US-led international coalition in addition to Kurdish attacks in the Syrian northeastern province of al-Hasakah, Kurdish officials said on May 19. Naser Haj Mansur, spokesperson for the defense department in the Kurdish autonomous region of alJazira in al-Hasakah, said that “between 170 and 200 IS members were killed in coalition bombings and in attacks of the Kurdish forces and Christian militias on the ground”. However, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, or SOHR, said the majority of jihadists were killed in the air strikes, as the Kurdish troops
days A more detailed announcement could come within days. President Barack Obama has been briefed by advisers and “reaffirmed the strong US support” for Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Pro-government forces and police officials said that they had thwarted an IS attack to the east of Ramadi overnight, near to where Shia militias have been deployed ahead of a counter-offensive. Witnesses earlier reported seeing Islamic State militants setting up defensive positions in the city itself. After a Council of Ministers meeting on May 19, the Iraqi
merely “searched” the territory after the air raids. The Pentagon, which typically provides casualty figures, did not confirm the information. Mansur added that the attacks occurred on the outskirts of the town of Tel Tamr, where IS fighters have been clashing with Syrian Kurdish militias and their allies since February. The Kurds made progress on May 19, taking control of the town of Talon, south of Tel Tamr. However, Mansur added that there were still a dozen villages in the hands of IS in the southern outskirts of Tel Tamr, despite the siege by the Syrian Kurdish militias.
prime minister vowed to prosecute forces who fled the city in the wake of the IS attacks. Abadi said the Iraqi people needed to “stand unified” and called for voluntary recruitment to the army. He also pledged to recruit and arm tribal fighters. The council also issued a fresh plea to the international community to help Iraq’s “war against terrorism”. The loss of Ramadi, capital of western Anbar province, is a blow for both the Iraqi government and US strategy in the area, says the BBC’s Jim Muir in Beirut.
13 militants killed in Pakistan ISLAMABAD: At least 13 suspected militants were killed on May 20 in airstrikes conducted by military fighter jets in Pakistan’s North Waziristan Tribal Agency, it was officially announced. An official statement issued by the Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) said five hideouts of the militants were also destroyed in the air attack. The Pakistan Army launched Zarb-e-Azb, a comprehensive antimilitant operation, in 2014 against foreign and local terrorists who were hiding in sanctuaries in the North Waziristan tribal region. The operation was launched a week after a brazen insurgent attack on the country’s busiest airport in Karachi. The tribal region, which borders Afghanistan, has been used as a base by militants over the years. According to the ISPR, troops have been deployed along its border with neighboring agencies to block any movement of terrorists in and out of the region.

nocking down thousands of multi-storeyed buildings damaged in the April 25 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks — which are posing serious threat to life and property in urban areas of Nepal — has became a tall order for the Nepal government to manage. On the one hand, the buildings are posing serious threat to life and property and on the other, government officials maintain that they
do not have proper and adequate technology and expertise to knock them down. On May 13, the Nepal government formed a team led by the ministry of urban development (MoUD) along with the Nepal Army (NA) to demolish quake-damaged buildings in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts in the Kathmandu Valley. 500 buildings in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts needed to be demolished in the first phase. Later, more buildings were to be demolished gradually.

eteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was on May 20 recalled to India's Test squad after a gap of two years for the lone Test against Bangladesh next month. Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) All-India Senior Selection Committee met at the Cricket Centre here to pick the Indian teams for a Test and the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Bangladesh, to be played from June 10 to 24. Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the tour due to an injured knee. The selectors have, therefore, picked up mediumpacer Dhawal Kulkarni as replacement for the Bengal seamer in the ODI squad. MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) cricket committee has recommended staging of Test matches that extend into the evening hours during its two-day meeting here, an ICC release said on May 18. “Day-Night Test matches were discussed at length. The Cricket Committee also received a report from the MCC on the four-day First Class match played with pink balls in Abu Dhabi in March, and viewed the condition of the balls used in that match,” said a release following the meeting that concluded on May 16. “As a result of these discussions, there will be a strong recommendation from the Cricket Committee to member countries that they should identify opportunities to play Test matches that extend into the evening hours,” it said. The committee chaired by former cricketer Anil Kumble also deliberated on the concept of four-day Test match, but in the end, decided to stick to the usual five-day format. “There was also discussion on the
concept of four-day Test cricket, and while the committee was not of the view that Tests should be shorter than 5-days, it acknowledged that the game will need to be open to considering proposals in the future that look to enhance the public appeal of cricket’s oldest format,” the release said. Regarding the players’ code of conduct, the meeting discussed various issues at length. “The committee supported the stronger stance being taken against inappropriate player behavior, and was concerned at the increasing number of send-offs. It also encouraged referees to apply suspensions rather than fines, more specifically for repeat offenders and for the more serious offenses, such as physical contact,” it said. The Cricket Committee’s mandate is to discuss cricket-playing matters and make recommendations to the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee and the ICC Board that will meet in Barbados during the ICC’s annual conference week, from June 22-26.

SYDNEY: Star Indian shuttler and defending champion Saina Nehwal has been seeded No.2 in the women’s singles event for the $750,000 Australian Open Superseries to be played here from May 26 to 31. World No.2 Saina had defeated Spaniard Carolina Marin — who later won the World Championships — to lift the trophy last year. This time she will open her campaign against a yet to be decided qualifier. Meanwhile, World No.11 P.V. Sindhu is unseeded and has a tough opening match in the face of former World Champion Yihan Wang of China. In men’s singles, World No.4 Kidambi Srikanth has been seeded fourth and will start his campaign against Danish HansKristian Vittinghus.
Particularly regarding this Bangladesh tour, the selection committee has selected Harbhajan keeping in mind the batting strength of Bangladesh which has a number of left-handed batsmen,” Patil said on May 20.

timely half-century by opener Lendl Simmons and some quality bowling helped Mumbai Indians secure a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015 final with a 25-run victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the qualifier 1 at the Wankhede Stadium here on May 19. Simmons rose to the occasion as he scored 65 off 51 balls, which was followed by Kieron Pollard’s 17-ball 41 that helped Mumbai post a challenging 187/6. In reply, Chennai lost wickets at regular intervals and were all out for 162 in 19 overs. With this win, Mumbai entered the tournament’s final which will be
played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on May 24. Chennai will get a second chance to make it to the final. They will face the winner of the eliminator in the second qualifier in Ranchi on May 22. Lasith Malinga (3/23), Harbhajan Singh (2/26) and R. Vinay Kumar (2/26) were the pick of the Mumbai bowlers. Chasing 188 to win, CSK got off to the worst possible start losing opener Dwayne Smith without scoring off the fourth ball of the first over. A full toss from pacer Lasith Malinga hit straight into Smith’s front pad which made it easy for the umpire to give the batsman out. Incoming batsman Faf du Plessis looked in fine form right from the

start. The South African along with opener Michael Hussey didn’t let the early wicket affect their scoring. But the very first ball of the sixth over brought the brakes in Chennai’s scoring as bowler Vinay Kumar got the vital wicket of Hussey (16). Suresh Raina and du Plessis took
it from there to help the team reach a score of 86/2 in 10 overs. But the over that followed saw the match swinging in the home side’s favor as Harbhajan Singh got rid of Raina (25) and skipper M.S. Dhoni (0) in successive deliveries to help Mumbai stay in the hunt.
Messi found the twine in the 65th minute off a lovely combination with Pedro Rodriguez — mathematically assuring Barca the
last 14 Liga matches. To come in third this season, it must now garner at least a tie in Granada in its last match. The squad coached by Luis Enrique — who clinched the top spot in La Liga with a one game yet to go — can now zero in on the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals as it tries for all three titles. “I think of everyone who has formed part of the club from the start of the season, and above all our fans,” said Luis Enrique. “This is our chance to make our fans happy, nothing more.”

The narration rolls off sometime in 1949, two years after India became independent, when little orphan Balraj lands up at the docks of Bombay. him an opening of a lifetime — to manage his restaurant-cum-pub, Bombay Velvet, in exchange of nefarious favors. An ever-obliging Johnny Balraj accepts the offer. The plot gets complicated when
Rosie, once a choir singer and now a wannabe crooner, is planted in Bombay Velvet by an influential editor, Jimmy Mistry, to thwart Khambatta’s business interests. Romance brews. Egos
clash. Greed and aspirations take centre stage in the backdrop of city politics. Absurdist works rarely follow a clear plot, and what actions occur, serve only to heighten the sense that characters are mere victims of arbitrary forces beyond their control. Dialogues are often redundant. With nothing much happening in terms of the story, the pace torturously drags in the first half, but picks up momentum in the latter part of the film. The only thing that keeps you hooked is the brilliant production quality. Ranbir Kapoor with his snazzy hairstyle and charming persona effortlessly gets into the skin of Johnny Balraj.

Local Nepalese raise funds for quake victims

VANSTAN, IL – Even as the April 25 earthquake has left a trail of death and destruction in Nepal, Chicago’s Nepali American Center has risen to the occasion by passing round the hat to collect funds for the luckless survivors through a series of small events to support the rebuilding process in the Himalayan nation. The latest, a buffet lunch at Evanston Indian and Nepalese restaurant Mt. Everest on May 10 drew Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and other local leaders who pledged to monitor the federal government’s aid to ensure it was effective and ongoing. While NAC president Bishnu Phuyal has himself lost a relative in the natural disaster, vice president Ramakant Kharel,
Mother’s Day at Grove of Skokie
owner of Mt. Everest, at 630 Church St., committed all the proceeds of the lunch service to the fund and said he would match any direct donations up to $5,000. Kharel had hosted a similar lunch also on May 7 which was attended by a wide range of golden-hearted people--from students to aldermen to non-profit groups. The group also hosted a candlelight vigil and a charity drive at a Bloomingdale Hindu temple. Hagerty Consulting, 1618 Orrington Ave., teamed up with Mt Everest for the May 7 fundraiser at the restaurant to benefit both the Nepali American Center’s Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund and AmeriCares, a non-profit emergency response organization. “How could you not get involved?” said Steve Hagerty, the founder of Hagerty
(L-R) Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill (in blue coat) & Ramakant Kharel (standing in sky blue shirt) Consulting, a firm that helps clients prepare for and recover from disasters. Hagerty will match 100 percent of the donations to AmeriCares collected at the door. Beyond helping the people of Nepal, the event was also a way for people in the Evanston business community to support each other, Hagerty said. The May 7 and 10 events have raised an estimated $25,000 toward a goal of $75,000 in May, Kharel said. Kharel said his restaurant had long been involved in fundraising efforts, going back to when 9/11 occurred shortly after he first opened. Originally from Nepal, Kharel said he decided to give money to the Nepali American Center’s Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund because he was on the organization’s
fundraising and financing team. Kharel’s restaurant is also serving as a donation center for the Nepali American Center, and is accepting canned foods, tents, water filters and other supplies. The American chapter of the NonResident Nepali Association, an international group of Nepali expatriates, is also collecting the funds. The group has a team of 32 people in Nepal who will communicate with the local government to see where the money is most needed, Phuyal said. Leaders from other Chicago-area AsianAmerican organizations are also assisting with the fundraising process and will host a larger event in late June. Sadruddin Noorani, a member of the board for the Asian American Coalition of Chicago, said Nepal would need support for years to come.

KOKIE, IL -- Seniors from the Grove Nursing Home celebrated the Mother’s Day with their family members on April 26 on its premises located at 9000 Lavergne Avenue, Skokie, IL. This year, as for the past 7 years, the festivities were held in the nursing home, to honor “Mataji, Maa, Baa, or Mom” on Mother’s Day, with satsang, bhajan and kirtan being major activities. At least 75 senior guests of ‘Vaishnav Satsung Mandal’ meditation group came to celebrate the event with the residents of the facility. The Grove of Skokie Living and Rehab Center offers short and long term rehabilitation, IV therapy, wound care, hospice and respite care. The facility has a special wing that accommodates Indian, Pakistani, Ba n g l a d e s h i a n d o t h e r So u t h Asian residents. HICAGO, IL – Munaf Patel, India’s star Test player who played first class Test cricket, ODIs (one-day internationals) and IPL, has played for the West Zone in the Duleep Trophy and Gujarat, Mumbai cricket team and Maharashtra cricket team. Munaf, a very humble personality from Bharuch district of India’s Gujarat state, is widely hailed for his magical bowling spell record of 7/97 in the firstclass Test cricket. He is making his maiden visit to Chicago and said he was looking forward to meeting Chicago youth to further help nurture the game spirit of cricket among them in Chicago-land area. Munaf, known to his fans as ‘Munna’, was rewarded with his selection in the Indian Test squad for the 2nd Test against England in Mohali, when he made his Test debut. Munna recorded the figures of 7/97 on debut, including 4/25 in the second innings and demonstrated an ability to swing the ball in both directions. In the 2005–2006 Test Series against West Indies, Munaf proved he was arguably the fastest bowler in India, bowling regularly at speeds of over 85 miles per hour (137 km/h) and has produced balls at a pace over the 90-milesper-hour (140 km/h) mark. However, more impressive than his ability to bowl at a very quick pace has been his control, a skill lacking in recent Indian fast bowlers. India’s Star Test /ODI/ IPL Cricketer Munaf Patel will formally inaugurate
(L-R) Iftekhar Shareef, Consul General Dr Ausaf Sayeed & Munaf Patel the cricket tournament organized by the United Christian Cultural Association (UCCA) on May 23 at 11 am in Dee Park located at 9229 W. This annual cricket tournament is hosted by UCCA leadership team consisting of Keerthi Ravoori, Vasanth Charles, Raju Pasumarthi, Emanuel Neela, Shirley Kalvakota, D.Satish and N. Praveen. Munaf will throw the ceremonial first ball to kick off a spirited cricket tournament hosted by the UCCA which has been hosting the annual cricket tournament for youth of all faiths for the last two years to actively promote the game of cricket.
Prominent community figure Iftekhar Shareef is facilitating the visit of star cricketer Munaf Patel to inspire cricketing zeal among the youth. Iftekhar Shareef, who has earlier brought several India’s leading cricketers to Chicago, including former Indian Captain Mohd. Azharuddin & other key Ranji Trophy players, said in a statement that the primary goal of ushering Munaf to the tournament was to inspire cricket among the south Asian youth and to help promote their innate cricket talent. Earlier, Iftekhar Shareef arranged Munaf Patel’s meeting with Consul General Dr. Ausaf Sayeed with whom he exchanged pleasantries which was followed by a luncheon hosted in his

RAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN IN CHICAGO ON MAY 29 BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO, IL -- The king of Sufi music, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, will be returning to Chicago after a two-year hiatus, on May 29 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates. The highly anticipated North American tour that began in Toronto will see Rahat traveling to various cities with the final show on June 13 in Trenton, New Jersey. Coming of a critically-acclaimed album, ‘Back 2 Love’, and hit single ‘Zaroori Tha’ which has over 35 million views on YouTube, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan continues a legacy of historic proportions. News of his sellouts in Canada, Detroit, and Memphis have energized his fans in Chicago. “Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the stuff of legends, there are simply no western counterparts to compare him to”, claimed ticket holder Omair Rashid. Rahat has promised fans that he will debut a new set of qawwalies and songs

while also singing classics such as Teri Meri, Mast Mast Do Nain, Ore Priya, and more. Known for transcending boundaries
within the South Asian community, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani native who has repeatedly praised Indians for embracing
his music and providing a forum for his artistic skills. Nephew of legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, a great Sufi singer and an ardent practitioner of Qawwali, Rahat belongs to a family of musical geniuses. The unbroken tradition of qawwali of Rahat’s family goes back over 600 years. Their influence can also be seen in the west as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan collaborated with Pearl Jam on the soundtrack of the hit movie Dead Man Walking. This is the fourth time that the team at Sahil & LA TAN is responsible for bringing Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. In 2014, it brought Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam, and the Bollywood extravaganza SLAM! The Tour. They have revived the South Asian music scene across the Midwest. “We think we’ve become the kind of promoters that audiences can rely on and we’re always looking for opportunities to bring bigger and better things”, said Bhavesh Patel of Sahil.

HICAGO, IL — Last week, 200 Sikhs attended the first major fund-raising event for the National Sikh Campaign (NSC), raising a total of $34,000. The NSC aims to promote national awareness of Sikhism and Sikh identity through the media, said a press release. At the event, NSC representatives presented their media plan to place speciallycrafted ads about Sikhs on national and local TV channels and websites. “This will help to educate Americans on the Sikh community and identity of wearing a turban and beard,” explained the organizers. When Dr. Rajwant Singh, co-founder of the NSC, asked the audience how many of them had the experience of being identified as something other than Sikh, most of them raised their hand. “This needs to change and we cannot continue to accept this. It is in our hand to change how people see or treat us,” said Singh. The NSC initiative began after Hart Research Associates took a poll that showed Americans’ perceptions of Sikhs. The report revealed that when the Sikh values of equality, gender equity and tolerance of other religions were presented to specific targeted groups, negative perceptions changed to positive ones by over 18-20 per cent. “The response of the community is beyond our expectations. People have been waiting for an initiative like this for years. Finally, we can all come together to create a conducive environment for younger ones, who, many times, face a hostile situation due to their identity,” said Jasvir Kaur Singh, main organizer of the event.

M
en and women are moving towards baldness as early as in their 20s and experts say that the medicine might be in your diet. “In the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, our clients were aged between 40 and 60. But now, about 85 percent are aged between 20 and 40, both men and women. There are many causes of hair loss. It can happen due to stress, pollution or lack of sleep or unhealthy diet,” Sanket Shah, CEO and managing director, Advanced Hair Studio (India), told IANS. Advanced Hair Studio have devised a procedure, called Advanced Hair Studio Fitness Programme, a treatment to control hair loss and save existing hair. As diet plays a major role in heath of hair, the organization, which also
came up with AIR LACE, a breakthrough innovation in Strand by Strand (Cosmetic) hair replacement procedure, and capital-based nutritionist Lovneet Batra came together to bring forth discussion on ‘Healthy eating, healthy hair’. Batra believes what you eat reflects on your skin and hair. “Food can be the best medicine for healthy hair and skin. Hair loss might be due to various reasons, but nutritional deficiency might be one of them and you need to address that,” she said during the discussion. “People go for sugar free and fat free food items, but they are required by the body. People go for sugar free and fat free food items, but they are required by the body kitchens, it shouldn’t be heated. It is just for dressing purpose. Mustard oil or ghee gel with Indian delicacies,” added Batra, who stressed on the importance of a proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and micronutrients. The nutritionist also emphasized
on the amount of nutrients to be consumed. “We know that protein is needed for good hair, but women shouldn’t consume more than 55 grams of protein. Men should stick to 65 grams. If you eat that in excess, it will stress out the liver and kidney. Similarly, excess of sugar is also not good. It will lead to dandruff,” she said. Reading ingredients is equally important. “Food marketing can be misleading. For instance, many assume oat bread is good. But if the top ingredient is refined flour, it means it is mostly flour,” she said. So, make right choices to stay fit and feel healthy. .IANS, NEW DELHI

f you are someone who loves travelling alone then its important to keep an account of a few necessary pointers before packing your bags for the next destination. From keeping your confidence intact during your journey to travelling light can make your trip smart and fun filled. Rohan Rajgharia , CEO of Mana Hotels, shares tips for a single woman traveller who loves to explore destinations all alone, said a statement. Safety comes first: Your safety is in your hand so be prepared, be self-reliant and don’t depend on strangers. Always carry basic things while you are travelling like a map, a guide book, packed food, a water bottle and a first aid box etc. Be friendly and confident: When you travel its obvious everyone is a stranger to you until and unless you make any effort for an interaction, through this you might get to know an awesome traveller
NEW YORK: When it comes to analyzing the health benefits of work shifts, there is nothing like the traditional nine-to-five schedule, says a new study. Workers with non-traditional schedules are more likely to be overweight, experience sleep-related health problems and metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, compared to workers following traditional work schedules, the findings showed. “Shift work employees are particularly vulnerable to experiencing sleep problems as their jobs require them to work night, flex, extended, or rotating shifts,” explained lead investigator Marjory Givens of University of Wisconsin. Shift workers were significantly more likely overweight than traditional schedule workers (47.9 percent vs 34.7 percent). They also experienced more sleep problems such as insomnia (23.6 percent vs. 16.3 percent), insufficient sleep (53 percent vs. 42.9 percent), or excessive wake-time sleepiness (31.8 percent vs. 24.4 percent). It found that shift workers not able to get sufficient sleep (7 hours or more) were more vulnerable to metabolic disorders.
or a person who prefers to travel aimlessly. If you feel uncomfortable during the interaction just walk away. It’s totally okay to be rude when safety is concerned. Travel light: Be a smart traveller, pack light and don’t get burdened by unnecessary luggage which can turn out to be a super experience spoiler. Instead opt for a backpack and bon voyage! Knowledge about the destination: Gather all the information about your destination as much as you can, it’s beneficial to stay updated .Be sure and give a quick review of cultural background; it will be an added convenience throughout your trip. Hotel proximity to the sight: Don’t forget to dig out information about the hotels near the railways station, bus terminals and airports. Sorting things will help you to spend more time exploring things, places and culture of the particular place. Without wasting much of time in commuting. It will eventually reflect how aware a traveller you are.

Orange juice good for ageing brain Oranges are rich in flavanones, a sub-class of flavonoids, which may improve memory function sity of Reading. The study saw a group of 37 rinking orange juice healthy adults (mean age 67 years) could help improve consuming 500 ml of orange juice brain function in daily over an eight week period. given during the study period. Orange juice is a major source of flavonoids — being particularly rich in a sub-class of flavonoids, known as flavanones. Recent studies have shown that flavonoids may improve memory through the activation of signalling pathways in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is associated with learning and memory. “Small, easily administered changes to the daily diet, such as eating more flavonoid-rich fruits and vegetables, have the potential to substantially benefit brain health,” Lamport said. “Flavonoid rich foodstuffs could play a big role in tackling cognition decline in old age,” he concluded.
Even modest exercise good for the elderly IANS, LONDON
E
ven modest and regular exercise is good for the elderly as it decreases the risk of death among them, a new study says. At least 15 minutes of physical activity for five days a week would be a suitable first target for the elderly. “The exercise could include brisk walking, cycling, swimming or gymnastics,” said David Hupin from the department of clinical and exercise physiology at the University Hospital of St-Etienne-Lyon, France. “This message should be relayed
by general practitioners, who play a key and essential role in promoting exercise behaviour in the elderly,” Hupin added. For the general population, a recommended exercise programme of 30 minutes at least five days a week (or 150 minutes per week) has been shown to reduce the average risk of death by 30 percent. The risk of death was calculated to be 57 percent lower in those whose activity level was equal to or higher than the recommended 150 minutes per week. “Even a little is good, more may be better,” he said.
Single mothers at risk of poor health later in life IANS, LONDON
S
ingle motherhood between the ages of 16 and 49 is linked to poorer health in later life in several different countries, says a new research. Analysis of responses from over 25,000 women aged above 50 indicated that any period of single motherhood was linked to a greater risk of some level of physical disability and poor health in later life than dual parenthood. It indicated that women who became single mothers before the age of 20 or as the result of divorce were at particular risk of disability and poor health in later life. Also, women who parented alone for eight or more years or who had two or more children were also at such risk. “Lone parenthood may hamper a woman’s ability to get qualifications, have a career and earn enough money, which may itself lead to poorer health.”
Omega-3 diet can curb anti-social behaviour in kids
NEW YORK: A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids commonly found in fish oil helps reduce anti-social and aggressive behaviour problems in children, shows a promising research. “As a protective factor for reducing behaviour problems in children, nutrition is a promising option; it is relatively inexpensive and can be easy to manage,” said Jianghong Liu, associate professor at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in the US. Cold water oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines are rich in omega 3 fatty acids. During the study, 100 children aged eight to 16 received a drink containing a gram of omega-3 once a day for six months. The control group also consisted of 100 children who received the same drink without the supplement.
The researchers had parents assess their children on “externalising” aggressive and anti-social behaviour such as getting into fights or lying, as well as “internalising” behaviour such as depression, anxiety and withdrawal. “Both groups showed improvement in both the externalising and internalising behaviour problems after six months,” said Adrian Raine from University of Pennsylvania. But what was particularly interesting was what was happening at 12 months, Raine said. “The control group returned to the baseline while the omega-3 group continued to go down. In the end, we saw a 42 percent reduction in scores on externalising behaviour and 62 percent reduction in internalizing behaviour,” Raine said.
