IADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa, 68, was on May 23 sworn in for the sixth time as the Tamil Nadu chief minister in a packed hall in Madras University as thousands lined up on the roads outside. She was administered oath of office and secrecy by Governor K. Rosaiah. Jayalalithaa will head a 29-member ministry in the 15th Tamil Nadu assembly. She was sworn in as chief minister for the sixth time in her political career. Jayalalithaa later went to the Secretariat here to sign some papers. Rosaiah also administered oath of office to her council of ministers, days after the AIADMK-led alliance won the May 16 assembly election which saw a multi-cornered contest. Union ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Pon Radhakrishnan, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin, industrialists and other personalities attended the swearing in ceremony. A large number of people gathered at the venue. People lined up along both sides of the road from Jayalalithaa’s residence at Poes Garden through the stretch from Kamaraj Salai on the Marina up to
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPIM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan, 71, was on May 25 administered oath as the 22nd chief minister of Kerala at the Central Stadium here by Governor P. Sathasivam. Also sworn-in were 18 cabinet ministers — 11 from the CPI-M, four from CPI, and one each from the Congress-S, Janata Dal-S and the Nationalist Congress Party. Departing from tradition, this is the second time that the swearing in was held outside the Raj Bhavan complex — the official residence of the Kerala governor. In 2006, V.S. Achuthanandan had opted for his swearing-in at the Central Stadium, which was done to ensure that people of the state could come and witness the event. The Communist Party of IndiaMarxist (CPI-M)-led Left Democratic Front swept the May 16 assembly polls, winning 91 seats in the 140-member Kerala assembly, showing the door to Oommen Chandy’s Congress-led government that was in power since 2011.

Meanwhile, in an effort to fulfil her poll promise of phased implementation of liquor prohibition in the state the chief minister, soon after being sworn-in, announced
closure of 500 liquor shops. She also ordered reduced the working time of the liquor outlets by two hours. A statement issued by the government said liquor shops will be now open between 12 noon and 10 p.m. Earlier, these shops functioned between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. Reacting to the announcement, PMK founder S.Ramadoss said the
government should have curtailed the liquor shop working hours in the evening when the sales peak. He said the government has not said when the 500 outlets would be closed. Pointing out the existence of around 7,000 liquor outlets in the state, Ramadoss said it will take 14 years to implement full prohibition in the state if 500 shops are closed per year.

Transgender directive challenged in court 11 states have challenged Obama’s directive that forces them to allow transgender students use bathrooms that match their gender identity IANS, WASHINGTON
T
exas and 10 other states will sue the Obama administration over a directive that forces states to adjust their policy to allow transgender students to use bathrooms that match their gender identity. Texas’s action was announced on Twitter by Texas Gov. Greg Abbot (R) on May 25, RT online reported. The other states that joined the lawsuit as plaintiffs are Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Utah, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Georgia, Maine, Arizona and Maine. The filing accuses the Obama administration of “running roughshod over commonsense policies” that protect children and asks a judge to declare the move unlawful. The Education Department’s directive orders public schools to create policies allowing transgender students to use bathrooms based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex. “No student should ever have to go through the experience of feeling unwelcome at school or on a college campus,” said Education Secretary John King Jr. The administration justifies its action on the basis of Title IX, a federal statute that prohibits gender
Donald Trump wins Washington primary WASHINGTON: Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump on May 24 night won the Washington state primary. According to projections by Donald Trump major US media, Trump won in the northwestern state of Washington by a wide margin, ahead of his former rivals Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Ohio Governor John Kasich and politician Ben Carson whose names were still listed on the ballot despite dropping out of the race weeks ago. Since Cruz and Kasich dropped out from the presidential race earlier this month after Trump’s victory in Indiana on May 3, the billionaire has barely held campaign rallies.

Title IX, a federal statute, prohibits gender discrimination at educational institutions that receive public funding.
discrimination at educational institutions that receive public funding. Abbot said that Paxton’s lawsuit is “challenging the way that the Obama administration is trampling the United States Constitution”. “The president has no authority to enact laws whatsoever. Several times Congress has taken up the issue of whether to expand the Civil Rights Act and Title IX and whether or not to include transgender. Both times or multiple times, Congress has decided against that,” Abbot added.
The lawsuits are part of a national transgender bathroom usage controversy, which erupted following the passage of a bill in North Carolina that required that people use the bathroom corresponding to their biological gender. Supporters of Obama’s directive say that it protects transgender students from unjust discrimination, while opponents argue that activists are asking for an unprincipled exception to bathroom policy that continues to segregate most people by gender.
WASHINGTON: The US State Department’s inspector general has sharply criticized Hillary Clinton’s exclusive use of a private email server while she was secretary of state, saying she had not sought permission to use it and would not have received it if she had. In a report delivered to members of Congress on May 25, the inspector general said that Clinton “had an obligation to discuss using her personal email account to conduct official business” with officials responsible for handling records and security but that inspectors “found no evidence” that she had requested or received approval from anyone at the department to conduct her state business on a personal email. The report, according to the New York Times, also said that department officials “did not - and would not approve her exclusive reliance on a
personal email account to conduct Department business.” In November 2010, her deputy chief of staff for operations prodded her about “putting you on state email or releasing your email address to the department so you are not going to spam.” Clinton, however, replied that she would consider a separate address or device “but I don’t want any risk of the personal being accessible.” The report, as well as an FBI investigation and other legal challenges seeking information about her use of the server, is certain to keep alive a controversy that has shadowed Clinton’s campaign for the presidency. The events have all come to a climax just as she was close to defeating Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination.
US not to apologize for Hiroshima attack IANS, TOKYO
U
S President Barack Obama has asserted that during his visit to Japan for the G7 summit he will not be apologizing for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima city during World War II. Obama said on May 22 that his visit to Hiroshima, the first city to suffer an atomic bombing, would emphasize friendly ties between Japan and the US. Obama, accompanied by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, will on May 27 become the first incumbent US president to visit the site of the world’s first nuclear bombing. In an interview with Japanese national broadcaster NHK, Obama said leaders often have to make hard choices during times of conflict and no apologies would be included in the statement the president is expected to make in the western Japanese city.
Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and US President Barack Obama review a guard of honor in Hanoi, capital of Vietnam, on May 23.
“It’s important to recognize that in the midst of war, leaders make all kinds of decisions, it’s a job of historians to ask questions and examine them,” Obama said. “But I know, as somebody who’s now sat in this position for the last seven and half years, that every
leader makes very difficult decisions, particularly during wartime.” The bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 killed thousands instantly and about 140,000 by the end of the year. Japanese city Nagasaki was hit on August 9, forcing Japan to surrender
six days later. A majority of Americans see the bombings as having been necessary to end the war and save US and Japanese lives, although many historians question that view. According to a poll released on May 20, the vast majority of Americans are against any form of apology for the use of the atomic bomb in World War 2. Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 partly for his stance on nuclear non-proliferation, said he felt that emphasis needed to be placed on the current relationship between Washington and Tokyo. “I think it is also a happy story about how former adversaries came together to become one of the closest partnerships and closest allies in the world,” he said. Critics said that by not apologizing, Obama will allow Japan to stick to the narrative that paints it as a victim.

he Supreme Court on May 26 cleared the decks for the return of Italian marine Sergeant Major Salvatore Girone - who along with Chief Master Sergeant Massimiliano Latorre is accused of killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala’s coast in February 2012 - to leave India as it relaxed its earlier bail conditions. An apex court vacation bench of Justice Prafulla C. Pant and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud modified the bail condition paving the way for Girone’s return to Italy on an application by the Italian government backed by India. The bench recorded the Indian government’s “no objection” to the move. Relaxing the earlier bail order, the bench also added three more conditions proposed by Additional Solicitor General P.S.Narasimha on behalf of the Indian government. Besides this, the court said that the Italian ambassador in New Delhi will give a fresh undertaking stating that Girone shall be made to return to India in one month after the decision of the International Arbitral Tribunal and if required by it.

Latorre is already on Italy on health grounds. The court order came in the wake of April 29 order of the tribunal asking both India and Italy to cooperate for Girone’s return till arbitration proceedings before it are going. Italy has invoked international arbitration on the issue of jurisdiction to try the two Italian marines for killing the fishermen mistaking
them as sea pirates. Meanwhile, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed the state government’s displeasure and blamed the Centre after the Supreme Court cleared the decks for Italian Marine Salvatore Girone to leave India. Girone, alongwith Sergeant Massimiliano Latorre, is accused of killing two Indian fishermen off Kerala’s coast in February 2012. Addressing reporters here in the state capital, Vijayan said that they “have always been unhappy” with the way the case was handled by the Centre. “We have made our position clear right from the time this incident occurred; things never went the way it should have gone. The Centre never pursued the case in the way it should have been taken up, and hence this has happened,” said Vijayan. When the incident occurred the Oommen Chandy government was in office here, and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government led by Manmohan Singh was at the helm of affairs in Delhi. The then Left opposition here had used this case politically, and time and again mentioned about the Italian connection in the case and the “soft corner” the then central government had.

GUWAHATI: The new Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has kept the home and political department with him while he has given important portfolios like finance, planning and development, health and family welfare as well as the education department to Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma, who was a cabinet minis-
ter of the erstwhile Congress government in Assam led by then chief minister Tarun Gogoi, was the minister for health & family welfare and education departments. It is only last year that Sarma resigned from the cabinet after differences with Gogoi and subsequently joined the BJP. Sonowal has also kept departments like social welfare and power.
I have undertaken maximum reforms as PM, says Modi NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said in the two years in office his government has made policy changes to curb corruption and opened up more of the economy to foreign investment while filling gaps in rural infrastructure. "I have actually undertaken the maximum reforms," Modi said in an interview to the Wall Street Journal on the eve of his second anniversary in office. But, he added, "I have an enormous task ahead for myself." The prime minister said he has
set a path for accelerated growth that the states now need to help navigate. Modi said that many of the changes he has put in place would have been regarded in previous administrations as difficult to implement, but now that he has done them, to his critics they no longer qualify as "big bang". He said he has "opened up more of the economy to foreign investment and made changes to curb corruption, filled gaps in rural infrastructure and made it easier to do business".
TWO YEARS OF MODI GOVERNMENT
BJP succeeds in breaking new ground, deals blow to Cong NIRENDRA DEV, NEW DELHI
I
t has been a see-saw ride for the BJP since it formed an alliance government at the centre two years ago but victory in the Assam polls has helped it wrest back the political momentum it lost after defeats in Delhi and Bihar. The victory has also helped the BJP emerge as a party with a noticeable pan-India presence while also brightening its prospects for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The BJP victories in several state elections after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls have helped build the perception that the Narendra Modi government continues to enjoy the support of the people in various regions. In the last two years, the party has been able to install its chief ministers in Haryana, Maha-

rashtra, Jharkhand and Assam. It also emerged as the second biggest party in Jammu and Kashmir, where it is part of the ruling coalition. The BJP victories have also dealt a severe blow to Congress, which
now has governments only in six states - with Karnataka being the only big state in its kitty. The party had won only 44 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections - to the BJP’s 282 in a 545-member house. BJP leaders say that the victory
in Assam will have an impact on national politics and help build its campaign for the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly polls early next year. “The Assam victory will have an immense impact on national politics. It has sparked off debate about surgery in Congress and has energised the BJP cadres for the Uttar Pradesh elections,” BJP MP Jagdambika Pal told IANS. Uttar Pradesh sends 80 MPs to Lok Sabha and will be among five states where assembly polls will be held early next year. Party leader Tapir Gao said the BJP would also be looking for victory in Manipur next year. The party’s coming to power in Assam, its entry in Kerala assembly and being part of the ruling coalition in Jammu and Kashmir has
made BJP a truly pan-India party. BJP has appears to have replaced Congress as the primary pillar of national polity. BJP leaders say the party’s performance in the future polls is directly linked to the people’s perception about the Modi government’s performance. “As a ruling party and a government, we may be doing far better job. But we need to do a lot in terms of the perception battle,” BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said. Neiphiu Rio, who is a Nagaland Peoples Front MP from Nagaland, said it was time to implement schemes as mere slogans will not help. Former Lok Sabha secretary general Subash C. Kashyap said that Modi has to deliver for his party.

Focus on delivery, elections
TWO YEARS OF MODI GOVERNMENT
The Modi government seeks to enhance the footprint of its schemes to reap electoral benefits PRASHANT SOOD, NEW DELHI
H
aving launched schemes to improve incomes, speed up governance, foster cleanliness and improve social security, the Narendra Modi government is now seeking to enhance the footprint of its initiatives to reap electoral dividends in a clutch of assembly elections next year. The first year of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, which assumed office on May 26, 2014, saw the launch of several initiatives. Now, there appears to be a thrust on consolidating the schemes and taking them to the people. There is also growing focus on schemes meant for the poor and the rural sector. However, Key legislation such as the Goods and Services Tax bill have been stuck in parliament due to the BJP’s constant tussle with the
Congress and its lack of numbers in the Rajya Sabha. The government’s critics have also raised questions over the efficacy of the schemes and their implementation on the ground. Dissonance caused by controversial remarks of some BJP leaders and fringe elements have also sought to take focus away from governance. But the BJP’s victory in the Assam assembly polls appears to have handed it back the political momentum it lost after successive defeats in the Delhi and Bihar assembly polls. Modi has set out ambitious targets including Housing for All by 2022, a clean India as part of Swachh Bharat Mission by 2019 and giving free cooking gas cylinders to 50 million families living below the poverty line under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana by 2019 - the year of next general elections. The BJP’s victory in the Assam assembly polls appears to have handed it back the political momentum it lost after defeats in the Delhi and Bihar assembly polls major concern in a country where an estimated 65 percent of population is below 35 years of age, the government has launched missions such as Skill India and Make in India and given focus to improve physical infrastructure in rural and urban areas.
The government has used the direct benefit transfer and Aadhar to cut down on leakage of subsidies. It has taken steps to boost investment, strengthen higher education, enhance the share of solar and renewable energy and step up agricultural growth. Former cabinet secretary T.S.R Subramanian said initiatives such as Digital India, Aadhar, crop insurance, micro-finance and health insurance have the potential to transform India. “If one gets money at reasonable rates (through micro-finance), India will transform in 10 years. Make in India will come from small factories, this the government has understood,” Subramanian told IANS.
He said the Modi government was short of talent but was more decisive and “clearner” compared to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. Senior journalist and political commentator H.K. Dua said the Modi government has done well on foreign policy and has been active as far as economy was concerned and results were expected to flow in a year. “On the social front, they have not been very wise. Fringe elements...they have been stirring the pot too much. I have a feeling they have learnt lessons from Delhi and Bihar. They were not as shrill in Assam. If that continues it is good for the country,” he said.
‘Encryption a boon for terror groups’ NISHANT ARORA, NEW DELHI
W
hen Facebook-owned mobile messaging service WhatsApp announced to turn on end-to-end encryption for its over one billion monthly active users last month, CEO Mark Zuckerberg hailed this as an “important milestone for the WhatsApp community.” It means that for WhatsApp users, every call they make and every message, photo, video, file and voice message they send, will be end-to-end encrypted by default, allowing users to protect their conversations from being hacked. “So when you send a message, the only person who can read it is the person or group chat that you send that message to. No one can see inside that message. Not cybercriminals. Not hackers. Not
oppressive regimes. Not even us,” said Jan Koum, CEO and cofounder of WhatsApp, in a blog post. The move — coming after the FBI-Apple tussle over unlocking an iPhone used by a terrorist — has not gone well with cyber security
Experts say end-toend encryption may be a boon for terror groups operating in India experts in India. According to them, this may be a boon for terror groups operating in India and across the border as this ensures that their communications cannot be intercepted as they connect. “WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption provides more encouragement
to terror groups to be more bold in their communications in coded languages which can then be transmitted without the fear of being cracked on the way,” warns Pavan Duggal, one of the nation’s top cyber law experts. In a country where WhatsApp has become somewhat of a de-facto religion for smartphone users, endto-end encryption will hamper the Indian government’s plan to counter terrorism. “Given the fact that WhatsApp does not have an office in India, it further complicates the scenario. The Indian approach on encryption is also not clear. The draft of the National Encryption Policy received massive protests and was withdrawn by the government in 2015,” Duggal told IANS. Experts feel that end-to-end encryption will boost cyber radicalisation to a great extent.

he Afghan Taliban on May 25 named Haibatullah Akhundzada, an influential religious scholar rather than a combatant, as its head after the killing of Akhtar Mansour in a US drone strike in Pakistan last week. The militia group also appointed Sirajuddin Haqqani, a sworn enemy of the US, and Mohammad Yaqoob, the son of former longtime Taliban founding head Mullah Omar, as deputies to Akhundzada, the group said in a statement. Haqqani, who has a $10 million US State Department bounty on his head, is the leader of the Haqqani terror network, long aligned with the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It was for the first time that the
Afghan media hails Chabahar agreement KABUL: The Afghan media on May 24 lauded the Chabahar port agreement as a stride towards boosting trade and economic cooperation in the region and improving regional stability. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed the trilateral agreement in Tehran on May 23 to develop Chabahar port. “Inking Chabahar agreement is important for development of trade and economic cooperation and improving peace and security in the region,” the Daily Afghanistan newspaper said in its editorial.
Islamic scholar Haibatullah Akhundzada (inset) will succeed Akhtar Mansour, who was killed in a US drone strike (right) last week, as the head of the militia group.
Taliban publicly confirmed the death of their leader Mansour on Saturday when a US drone struck his vehicle in Balochistan province’s Ahmad Wal town. According to Afghan analysts, the appointment of Akhundzada comes
as a surprise as until Tuesday Haqqani was viewed as the most potential successor to Mansour. Haqqani, believed to be in his mid-40s, is described as “the most radical figure in their leadership”, and labelled as a “specially designat-
ed global terrorist” by the US’s FBI. Akhundzada, one of the most respected religious scholars in Taliban ranks, headed its courts during its five-year rule over Afghanistan. He issued many of its harshest fatwas, or Islamic edicts. Former Afghan intelligence chief Rahmatullah Nabil said Akhundzada was a village cleric and has no military or political experience, Khamaa Press reported. Nabil in a tweet said the newlyappointed Taliban supreme leader is 56-year-old. He was one of the Afghan Taliban’s deputy leaders. Born in Kandahar province of Afghanistan, Akhundzada belongs to the Eshaqzai clan. He is said to maintain close links with the Quetta Shura, the council of Afghan Taliban leaders based in the Pakistani city of Quetta.

ince Moscow started its air operation in Syria on September 30 last year, the Russian Air Force has eliminated over a third of Islamic State fighters in the country, the deputy head of Russia’s top security body revealed. “We estimate that at the beginning of our operation Al-Nusra Front and Islamic State possessed about 80,000 fighters, of whom 28,000 (35 percent) have already been eliminated. This is [the result of ] our actions together with the Syrian Army,” Evgeny Lukyanov said at the VII international security summit being held in Grozny,
the capital of Russia’s Chechen Republic, RT online reported. “Well, the (US-led anti-terrorist) coalition eliminated an additional 5,000 in two years,” Lukyanov added. “There were people predicting that it [Russia’s anti-terror-
ist operation in Syria] would result in another Afghanistan or something like that. That would never be. There are only limited military plans,” Lukyanov said, stressing that Syrians “must solve their issues for themselves.” The principle task of the Russian operation in Syria has been to force the sides to start a political dialogue, the Russian Security Council’s top official stressed. “Otherwise this [war] would have no end in sight.” “A deal is needed, and arrangements must be made through compromise,” Lukyanov added. “There are no victors in a civil war, everybody loses,” he said.
Dawood smuggling drugs via Nepal? ANIL GIRI, KATHMANDU
P
olice in Nepal are probing a suspected link of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim in cocaine smuggling in the international market via Nepal. This follows the recent arrest by Nepal Police of three Pakistani nationals linked to the international drugs market and who are believed to be close to Dawood. After their involvement in fake currency, and white and brown heroin smuggling, the links of some Pakistani nationals in cocaine smuggling in Europe through Asia have
been established by Nepal Police. Nepal’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) seized more than two kg cocaine — estimated to be worth over NRs.53 million ($492,812) — from three foreigners and a Nepali on Wednesday, which has established that some influential drug lords are involved in the racket, police sources here said. NCB chief and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Jay Bahadur Chand said Ymeris Carmen Narvez of Venezuela, Mohamad Lamine Dabo of Nigeria, Touhid Khan of India, and Dil Bahadur Gurung of Nepal were
caught with the cocaine in their possession. The arrested persons had set up links in Hong Kong with the help of Pakistani nationals. The Pakistani nationals have been identified as Wahid Khan, Adbul Razzak aka
Chacha and his brother who are believed to be close to Dawood, who is wanted in India for masterminding the 1993 Mumbai blasts. With a tip off from the Indian Intelligence Bureau, Nepal Police have made the arrests and found the

Child abusers to face chemical castration JAKARTA: Child sex abuse is now punishable by death and chemical castration in Indonesia after President Joko Widodo issued a new law following the brutal gang rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. The battered body of the victim was discovered, naked and tied up, in a forest on the island of Sumatra after she was attacked by a group of teenagers in April. Seven offenders have been jailed for 10 years. “Sexual violence against children, as I have said, is an extraordinary crime,” President Joko Widodo said on May 25 after issuing the new law. The law is effective immediately, although Indonesia’s parliament has the power to overturn it or demand revisions.
linkages of Pakistani nationals in the racket. Chacha and two others — identified as Tiger and Raja Bhai — are considered close to Dawood and have been operating their racket from Dubai, Malaysia and Hong Kong, sources said. Nepal Police have not made the claim openly but the way the drug smuggling racket is being handled and the names are coming forward, it shows that it is not the work of petty criminals, but one whose names, profession and links are well established, the sources added. DIG Chand on May 25 said the arrested were “mules” hired by an international drug cartel that supplies cocaine to European countries. Kathmandu was just one of the many pit stops used by the drug traffickers, he added. The seized cocaine had been trafficked to Kathmandu from Dubai by a Venezuelan woman.

India appreciates Trudeau’s gesture NEW DELHI: India on May 21 appreciated Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s gesture of apologizing in the House of Commons in Ottawa for the infamous Komagata Maru incident of 1914. “We welcome and deeply appreciate the gesture of Prime Minister of Canada to deliver a formal apology in the House of Commons for the Komagata Maru incident,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said in a statement. “The Indian diaspora in Canada has contributed immensely to Canada’s growth and development and acts as a bond between our two nations. Prime Minister Trudeau’s gesture constitutes an acknowledgment of the positive role of the Indian diaspora,” he said. The Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship that was hired by a rich Malaysia-based Sikh, Baba Gurdit Singh, to bring 376 Indians, mostly Sikhs, to Canada to challenge the racist laws of the time in 1914. But the ship was forcibly sent back to India after two months with 19 people losing their lives.

The tussle between the Congress-led state government and the HPCA has robbed hill station Dharamsala, known worldwide for hosting the Dalai Lama for close to six decades, of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in the last three seasons, HPCA press secretary Mohit Sood told IANS. Even the ICC World T20 2016 match between India and Pakistan was shifted out of Dharamsala on March 19, owing to a tussle between the government and the state cricket body. “It’s only Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh who has created an atmosphere of doubt over the India-Pakistan match,” said Thakur, the force behind the Rs.100 crore ($16 million) stadi-
um and ultra-luxurious residential complex in Dharamsala. The stadium first figured on the international cricket map in 2005 when it hosted a warm-up tie between the touring Pakistan team and the Indian Board President’s XI. The HPCA venue, located at an altitude of 4,000 ft above the sea level, is the first in India to use winter rye grass scattered around the outfield, which prevents the grass from dying when temperatures fall below 10 degrees Celsius. After the Congress formed the government in the state in December 2012, the vigilance and anticorruption bureau had filed a case of cheating and misappropriation case against the HPCA. IT also alleged wrongdoing in the allotment of land to the HPCA for constructing a residential complex for players near the Dharamsala stadium.

De Villiers remained unbeaten at 79 in 47 balls with five fours and five sixes, playing slowly and responsibly initially but breaking free later after the 15th over to ensure the match was safe in the hands of Royal Challengers. Abdullah and De Villiers managed to grab 16 and 15 runs respectively in the 15th and 16th overs to lower the asking rate to 32 runs in 23 balls by the 17th over. And halfway through the 18th over, De Villiers and Abdullah managed to even the required number of runs and balls at 15 and finally claim the victory in the 19th over. The batsmen constructed an unbroken partnership of 91 runs in 52 balls. Kulkarni came out with the best bowling figures for Gujarat Lions with 4/14 with a splendid economy of just 3.50 while Jadeja was the only other bowler to claim wickets for the Lions with bowling figures of 2/21.
T
wo time champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign in Indian Premier League 9 ended after going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 22 runs in the eliminator here on Wednesday. Famed Hyderabad’s bowling line-up led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with three wickets, proved too good for the KKR batsmen, who failed to put up a fight to finish at 140/8 in their 20 overs. Chasing 163, KKR were off an identical start as Hyderabad losing in-form opener Robin Uthappa (11) cheaply before skipper Gautam Gambhir (28) and all-rounder Colin Munroe (16) took the team to 46/1 in the powerplay. Gambhir and Munroe batted sensibly to put on 38 runs for the second wicket before the New Zealander perished to a silly run out off a sensational throw from Yuvraj Singh. Playing at his home ground, Gambhir failed to read the bounce
of the Kotla track as he miscued a short delivery from Ben Cutting. With KKR needing 99 from the last 10 overs, the team landed in further trouble as incoming batsman Yusuf Pathan (2) fell to a beautiful running catch from Bhuvneshwar Kumar off Moises Henriques. Next in Manish Pandey (36) and Suryakumar Yadav (23) batted sensibly to take the team past the 100run mark by the 14th over. Yadav, who survived a scare on 15, when pacer Mustafizur Rahman dropped him at the third man
boundary, could add only eight runs before a brilliant running catch from Shikhar Dhawan off Henriques ended the 46-run fifth wicket stand. Requiring 39 from the last three, Pandey, in his attempt to cope with the growing run-rate fell to a miscued shot off Bhuvneshwar after adding only 10 runs with Rajagopal Sathish (8). With hopes of reaching the second qualifier fading, Jason Holder (6) joined Sathish but the duo could do little as Bhuvneshwar packed them off in the last over.

BAPS Charities on tree planting spree BY A STAFF WRITER OBBINSVILLE, NJ-Global warming may have thrown down a tough challenge before the humankind but BAPS Charities has picked up the gauntlet. Eight-year old Vishnu of Robbinsville, NJ had his laces tied and was ready to go on an early Sunday morning. Vishnu was on a mission to fundraise for a cause close to his heart--saving the environment. Vishnu personally raised over $851.59 by going door to door in his neighborhood. Similarly, Sixteen-year-old Sweta Patel of Edison, inspired by the motto “think globally, act locally,” reached out to her teachers and neighbors by proudly sharing not only the cause for which she was fundraising, but also her personal excitement for being able to make a difference in the face of what is perhaps one of the biggest challenges faced by Planet Earth today--global warming. Reversing the impact of global warming seems like a daunting task. However, children like Vishnu and Sweta were determined to take action and help bring awareness to among their local community.

Walks in 50 cities Indeed, for the last couple of months, children, teenagers, adults and seniors had been passing round the hat to collect funds for supporting BAPS Charities Walk Green held on May 22 in Robbinsville, NJ, Edison, NJ, New York, NY, Parsippany, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, Jersey City, NJ, Warrington, PA and Boston, MA. Similar walks have been planned at over 50 cities in North America to support the planting of 70,000 trees in 2016. Recognizing the need to promote environment awareness, this year, BAPS Charities Walk supported Nature Conservancy’s efforts to plant and restore over 1.6 million acres of land by planting one billion trees by 2025 through their Plant-a-Billion-Trees initiative. The various walks in the Northeast

Speaking at the walk in Robbinsville, Ja n e Mi l l e r, De p u t y Di re c t o r o f Philanthropy at Nature Conservancy in New Jersey, said, “I am blown away that an all-volunteer organization like BAPS Charities can put together such a huge event, and do so much good and involve so many people. I want to thank BAPS Charities, not only for raising the funds to plant a billion trees but also bring awareness about this important issue. Nanette LeVan, the Associate Director of Philanthropy for Nature Conservancy, New Jersey, who joined the walk in Edison, NJ and expressed her thoughts on the national collaboration, “This was a great event and I’m really impressed to see such a wonderful turnout. It is so nice to see people of all ages come together for one cause--helping Nature Conservancy in its environmental efforts.” Freeholder Charles E. Tomaro, Chair of Infrastructure Management Committee for Middlesex County, stressed, “We must protect our environment and support such initiatives whole-heartedly. I am very proud to see BAPS Charities leading this walk to raise awareness in the community.” A great cause Jagruti Vyas from Robbinsville, NJ, a participant in the event, said, “When it comes to the environment, I do little things like recycle and compost at home. But today, I feel like I am part of a much bigger effort to save the environment. Coming out here today and walking with my children, I couldn’t think of a better way to help raise awareness and contribute to such a great cause”. Hi India Editor’s view Trees are beautiful and useful gifts of nature. Trees are great friends of men. But in the past few decades, there has been massive cutting of trees (deforestation). The hunger for agricultural land, hunt for timber and necessity for cheap fuel caused massive deforestation. The tropical forest trees were once the nerve centre of this planet. A large number of trees have already been destroyed. At some places, trees are being destroyed even today. As an effect of deforestation, there is a threat to the species of biodiversity. Trees are our best friends. Trees are older than men. It is our duty to take care of our great friend for our own survival and survival of birds, insects and creatures. Just like a good friend, trees service us in many ways. 4 A good friend shares his things with his friends. We get food, fruits,
flowers, seeds, medicines from trees. 4 A true friend always protects his friends. Trees protect us from sizzling heat of the sun under its shade. 4 Trees supply us with wood to manufacture furniture. 4 Trees harbor many birds and creatures. 4Trees give shelter to many animals which again in turn serve human beings. 4 By means of photo-synthesis trees maintain the supply of oxygen. Trees absorb carbon-dioxide and give up oxygen for us to survive. 4 Trees control flood, prevent land erosion, rotten leaves make the land fertile. Thus, trees never fail to serve the role of good friend. Let us not cut trees unreasonably but, indeed, take a pledge to rather protect them through social forestry.
greatly appreciate your support.” BAPS Charities undertakes many such charitable events throughout the year. From being the official shelter home for Mercer County residents during Hurricane Sandy to organizing Health Fairs, Blood Donation Drives, Food Drives, Bone Marrow Drives and Children’s Health and Safety Day, the activities of BAPS Charities are centered on improving the quality of lives of individuals and their families. Serving the world BAPS Charities is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit international charity organization committed to sincerely
serving the world by caring for individuals, families, and communities. It is affiliated with BAPS as an independent charity and social services arm. The 55,000 BAPS volunteers networked in over 3,300 centers around the world provide over 12 million volunteer-hours of service annually. Among social service charities, BAPS Charities is a well-respected and trusted name. It has amassed over 50 years of firsthand experience in initiating, managing, and sustaining 160 humanitarian operations throughout the world in such diverse fields as medical services, environmental services, community services, tribal services, and disaster relief services.

Meanwhile, in an effort to fulfil her poll promise of phased implementation of liquor prohibition in the state the chief minister, soon after being sworn-in, announced
closure of 500 liquor shops. She also ordered reduced the working time of the liquor outlets by two hours. While the Congress won 15 seats, DMK won two seats in the 30-member assembly. The All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) only won eight seats and the AIADMK grabbed four. An independent candidate was also elected. With the people’s verdict going against him, Chief Minister N.Rangasamy submitted his resignation to Lt.Governor A.K. Singh here. Speaking to reporters Rangasamy, who was re-elected from the Indira Nagar seat, said he had submitted his cabinet’s resignation. Prior to the elections, he said his alliance is with the people and not with any other political party. In 2011, AINRC had an alliance with AIADMK. The Congress-DMK combine were upbeat about winning the polls as factors like closure of factories, loss of jobs and lack of infrastructure development played against the AINRC government. the 30-member assembly. The first woman to join the elite Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1972, Bedi held key positions in her career, including Inspector General (Prisons) at Delhi’s highsecurity Tihar jail. Known for her administrative experience and integrity, her work in one of Asia’s largest jails won her the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1994. She was credited for introducing yoga, meditation, literacy drive, computer skills, feedback boxes for the inmates during her stint at Tihar and is often said to have successfully transformed the prison into a “reformatory”.

Debutant director Gautham Ramachandran, after months of auditioning, zeroed in on Shraddha, as he felt she was apt for the role of a crime reporter in the film, which will be based on critically acclaimed Rakshit Shetty-directed Ulidavaru Kandanthe. “Shraddha was one of the first girls I met during the auditions. Although I felt she seemed perfect for the role, we decided to audition
a few more girls. Over the course of nearly five months, we auditioned several girls but nobody fit the role as convincingly as Shraddha,” Gautham, erstwhile assistant of filmmakers Mysskin and Rajeev Menon, told IANS. “The second time we met Shraddha; she came well prepared and
had even memorized her lines. In the second audition, she just proved she was destined to do the role and we were convinced too,” he said. The film’s producers weren’t initially gung-ho about the idea. “They wanted a familiar heroine and a few well-known actresses were also interested to be part of the project. As a team when we saw Shraddha audition the second time, we were convinced she’d be ideal for the role. Vivek Krishnani, managing director of Sony Pictures India, shares: “For the Hindi version of ‘The Angry Birds Movie’, we needed story tellers who could trans-create rather than translate and for that we decided to bring on some of the best writing talent in our country.” “We are happy that Mayur and his team have delivered a supremely entertaining narrative with the right ‘masala’ ingredients to appeal to people of all ages,” said Krishnani. Divya Pathak, director - marketing, Sony Pictures India said: “In fact, we hope people will see value in watching the film in both languages”.
‘Sarbjit’ is a gem S eeing some of the scathing reviews for “Sarbjit”, I was tempted to fish out the early reviews of a film released in 1975 which was condemned by critics for being “loud”, “brash”, “plotless” and “over-dramatic”. That film was Ramesh Sippy’s “Sholay”. “Sarjbit” is no “Sholay”. Thankfully. But I firmly believe its forceful message on prisoners of politics and its persuasive emotional velocity in the scenes showing the imprisoned man’s sister’s and wife’s suffering, would be acknowledged in retrospect as remnants of a truly remarkable cinematic achievement.
Film: “Sarbjit”; Director: Omung Kumar; Cast: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Randeep Hooda, Richa Chadha; Rating: ****
The sister is played by the helplessly beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who rises valiantly to confront and embrace the sister Dalbir’s anguished and defiant fight to the end to free her brother. This is Dalbir’s story, more than Sarabjit Singh’s. And yet it’s also a film that doesn’t spare us Sarabjit’s anguish. “Sarbjit” is not a film that holds
itself back. It is a stormy rousing chest-thumping epic saga of a sister who rages against the injustice of her brother’s incarceration across the border. Director Omung Kumar adeptly weaves scenes of family ties and
their rude rupture through a skilful pattern of bright flashbacks and dreadfully pessimistic presenttimes when Sarabjit, locked up in a dingy cell far from home, mourns for the loss of freedom. The film has tremendous visual
The “Satya” director took to Twitter to say that the movie was made to put “a mirror to how he was allowed to happen in the first place”. “Making ‘Veerappan’ is not about glorifying a criminal but it’s to put a mirror to how he was allowed to happen in the first place,” Varma tweeted. The 54-year-old filmmaker shared that the story is a proof of an unpredictable man. “Story of Veerappan is a proof that just one unpredictable man can overturn an entire existing system. Same is true for Donald Trump too,” he added. Varma asserted that it is important to study about bad people “like Veerappan because knowledge of how to finish bad people is what which advances society”. The film stars Sandeep Bharadwaj, Sachiin Joshi, Usha Jadhav and Lisa Ray.
velocity. Whether it’s Randeep’s Sarabjit locked up in a cell large enough to house a rat, or shots of Dalbir strolling forlornly amidst a bloom of yellow flowers, cinematographer Kiran Deohans captures the innermost sanctity of hearts torn asunder by political violence. The sibling theme is treated with an exacerbated energy by Omung Kumar. The lengthy sequence where the family meets Sarabjit in his dingy prison cell in Lahore is outstanding for using cramped spaces to convey an emotional infinitude. Later there is another sequence where the sister shares a meal with Sarabjit in the same confined space. The two actors especially Randeep fill that space with a hungering sibling love.

Lawsuit to continue against Facebook BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Indian American Nimesh Patel, along with two other men, all of Chicago, Ill., was allowed by a federal judge in California to continue a class-action lawsuit against Facebook. Patel, Adam Pezen and Carlo Licata separately sued the Menlo Park, Calif.-based social media company in 2015. The cases, which allege Facebook was illegally collecting biometric data from people “tagged” in photos posted by other users, and that its use of facial recognition software violates Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act, were escalated in the summer of 2015 to the Northern District of California court and were combined. The privacy act was enacted in 2008 to regulate how individuals, companies and organizations can collect and use biometric data, which determine a person’s identity based on unique characteristics. The law states that no private entity can gather and keep a person’s biometric information without notification and written permission from that person. Restricted data include things such as retina and face scans, fingerprints and voiceprints, the Tribune report noted. None of the three men gave permission to Facebook to gather that information when another user tagged them in a photo. Tagging in photos allows the software to memorize their facial features, leading to prompts suggesting tags in other pictures. The plaintiffs are asking for $5,000 for each time Facebook intentionally or recklessly obtained their personal information in violation of Illinois law, and $1,000 for each time the company did so negligently, according to the suit cited in the Tribune report.

COMMUNITY NEWS/midwest doc is indicted Indians indicted in marriage fraud Indian on 3 murder counts FRIDAY, MAY 27, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER EW ORLEANS, LA-Several Indians and Indian Americans are among those indicted for a massive U-Visa and marriage fraud, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations, New Orleans Field Office. In the 16 count U-Visa fraud indictment, it is alleged that Law Enforcement Certification forms purporting to certify that aliens were victims of certain crimes, were submitted to the US Customs and Immigration Service (USCIS) along with the U-Visa applications. In order to be eligible for a U-Visa, the alien must have (1) been a victim of a certain crime; (2) suffered mental or physical abuse as a result of the crime; and (3) helped law enforcement officials in the investigation and/or prosecution of the crime. The indictment alleges that Simpson Lloyd Goodman, a licensed attorney, submitted fraudulent documents to USCIS for the purpose of obtaining U-Visas for other co-defendants. The false documents submitted to USCIS included falsified police reports allegedly prepared by a police officer Ivory Lee Harris of the Jackson Police Department. In the 16 count marriage fraud indictment, it is alleged that the aliens would enter into marriages between persons

who were already citizens of the United States solely for the purpose of obtaining immigration status to which the aliens would not otherwise be entitled. These marriages were not entered into because of mutual love and affection between the parties, but solely to create a legal status that would provide a basis for immigration status for the alien partner and usually for some economic benefit to the United States citizen. The following defendants have been charged in the U-Visa fraud indictment for their roles in a conspiracy to commit fraud and misuse of visa permits: Sachin Girishkumar Patel, 33, Tarunkumar Purushottambhai Patel, 49,
Simpson Lloyd Goodman, 29, Ivory Lee Harris, 45, Sanjay Rathilal Patel, 35, Maheshkumar Mangaldas Patel, 50, Ashaben Mukeshbhai Patel, 38, Rajan Nareshkumar Patel, 31, Gopaldas Khodabhai Patel, 55, Sachin Khodidas Patel, 27, and Baldevbhai Ramabhai Patel, 34, The maximum penalties for the crimes charged in the indictments are: conspiracy to commit fraud and misuse of visa permits – 5 years in prison and $250,000 fine per count; fraud and misuse of Visa permits – 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine per count; mail fraud – 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine per count; and wire fraud – 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

BY A STAFF WRITER TLANTA, GA -- An Indian American psychiatrist, dubbed by local media as ‘Dr. Death’ for his alleged role in the deaths of 36 patients, has been indicted on three counts of felony murder and 57 charges of unauthorized distribution of controlled substances in the US. Dr. Narendra Nagareddy from Atlanta, Georgia, was arrested in January. He is being held in a county jail without bound. The indictment was charged against him on May 18. “Nagareddy has regularly prescribed excessive amounts of controlled substances for no legitimate medical purpose, resulting in the abuse and diversion of the prescribed controlled substances,” the indictment alleged. According to the court papers, these drugs were given to patients without presenting previous medical records, MRIs, X-rays, or prescription records. The indictment alleged that drugs were powerful painkillers that were outside the scope of his practice. At least 12 patients have died from overdose deaths and another 36 deaths have been directly linked to his practice. “He became well known to addicts on metro Atlanta’s south side as a doctor that you could score drugs from without a hassle. Nagareddy regularly prescribed Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Fentanyl and Methadone, as well as other highly addictive drugs,” the indictment said.

Thieves rifle through cars for valuables Man falls at museum, gets $7.25 million
BY A STAFF WRITER LARK TOWNSHIP, NJ – The Clark Township police are hoping the public can help them identify a team of burglars that has been breaking into cars in town. The department released a video of one of the crimes on its Facebook page that shows the thieves approaching a group of parked cars near Wheatsheaf Drive in the morning hours on May 1. In the video, it appears that some of the cars were unlocked. The thieves are seen rifling through the cars looking for valuables. Clark Police Chief Pedro Matos says that this isn’t the first time this has happened in town. He says that the group is experienced. “It certainly was an organized effort on their part that night,” he says.

BY A STAFF WRITER HILADELPHIA, PA. -- Lawyers for Phani Guthula, the Indian American engineer who sued after he fell nearly 40 feet through a glass ceiling at a Philadelphia museum, said he has settled for $7.25 million. Guthula’s attorneys say a settlement was reached on May 6 with the defendants, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the security company, AlliedBarton Security Services. Guthula said a guard at the Rodin Museum in 2012 told him he could step on the glass to inspect lighting fixtures before he fell. At the time, the Rodin Museum had recently completed a $9 million renovation. Guthula, then 27 and working as an engineer for ICF International, was conducting an energy audit of the building, which had applied for an energy rebate with Peco.
P Chief Matos says that thieves entered 14 cars on three separate streets. He says that there were several similar incidents last year at the beginning of the summer. The latest incident occurred somewhere between 5:30 a.m. and 7:15 a
Pakistani arrested on Texas border BY A STAFF WRITER cALLEN, TX -- An illegal immigrant from Pakistan has been apprehended by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, and there is suspicion about his motives about entering the US along the Texas border with Mexico, after he lied about his whereabouts to FBI agents. On May 8, CBP picked up Javaid Muhammad who allegedly admitted to illegally crossing into the US, according to court records filed in McAllen, Texas. After Muhammad recounted his story to CBP, he provided a different account to the FBI on May 12, leading agents to believe both stories were false. Muhammad had told the FBI he came
M
from Pakistan and had never been to Chile or Ecuador, but agents presented him with an Ecuadorian passport and photos which showed a Chilean residence, at which point the man admitted to lying to CBP officials. The FBI was in possession of records consisting of photographs and travel records, as well as written accounts from other government agencies, which show that the statements Muhammad made during his interviews by the USBP and the FBI were materially false, fictitious or fraudulent,” a criminal complaint against him reads. “Muhammad admitted the statement he provided to the USBP was false, and also admitted to lying to the FBI during his interview,” the complaint states. The man is now also charged with lying
to federal agents. Last October, the Texas Department of Public Safety director held out a warning that border agents were capturing individuals from countries known to have a terrorism presence. “…Individuals that come across the Texas/ Mexican border from countries with a known terrorism presence and the answer to that is yes,” DPS Director Steven McCraw stated. “We have individuals that we’ve needed to debrief in Pashto/Dari,” McCraw said at an annual Texas Border Coalition conference, referring to two languages spoken in Afghanistan. “Not a lot of Pashto and Dari speakers around.” “But you can’t think about the last attack; you have to think of the next attack and where our vulnerabilities are,” the director added. “So, we’re concerned about that.”
NJ schools have lead in water
BY A STAFF WRITER ESREY CITY, NJ -- In the wake of the disclosure of elevated lead levels in some Newark public schools for the past four years, numerous districts in the Garden State have started testing their water and nearly a dozen have found lead in excess of the federal limit. Thirty-eight public schools in Newark

Large school districts such as Paterson, Parsippany-Troy Hills and New Brunswick have also reported lead levels exceeding the federal limit. While conducting the audit, an AlliedBarton security guard gave Guthula access to the museum’s attic area, the lawsuit said. Guthula was required to inspect light fixtures located above a glass-paneled surface, and the guard told him he could step onto the glass. He soon plummeted to the museum floor. Guthula’s lawsuit had accused the museum and its security company of not protecting him. Man pleads guilty to grabbing hijab BY A STAFF WRITER ORTH CAROLINA-A North Carolina man has pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor charge after authorities say he grabbed a Muslim woman’s hijab on a Southwest Airlines flight in December and pulled it off. Federal authorities say 37-year-old Gill Parker Payne, of Gastonia, North Carolina, entered the plea last week. He was charged with using force or threat of force to obstruct a Muslim woman in the free exercise of her religious beliefs. The two were on a 11 December flight from Chicago to Albuquerque when the confrontation happened. Authorities say Payne approached the woman, who was sitting several rows in front of him, and told her to take off her hijab–an Islamicstyle headscarf–saying, “This is America!” He then removed the hijab from her head. “No matter one’s faith, all Americans are entitled to peacefully exercise their religious beliefs free from discrimination and violence,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, in a statement. “Using or threatening force against individuals because of their religion is an affront to the fundamental values of this nation, and the Civil Rights Division will continue to be vigilant in protecting the religious liberties guaranteed to all.

Asians’ rally calls for more benefits S
BY A STAFF WRITER PRINGFIELD, IL -- The Pan Asian Voter Empowerment (PAVE) Coalition organized its fifth annual Asian American Action Day in Springfield, Illinois on May 17. Over 400 Asian Americans from across Illinois came to the State Capitol to advocate for issues such as a resolution to the state budget impasse and Automatic Voter Registration, while celebrating the passage of the Illinois Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Chants of “People Power!” and “Immigrant Power!” reverberated through the halls of the Capitol during the multi-lingual rally. Community leaders spoke about the growing Asian American population, and how the community held more power today than it had ever before. “I know that our communities have power because every day I see immigrant families struggling to learn English, while taking care of their families, while helping their kids with school, and still, still fighting for their rights and
the rights of others,” said Renuka Sharma of Indo American Center in Chicago. Members of the coalition met with Governor Bruce Rauner, House Speaker Michael Madigan, and members of the House and Senate to call for the passage of a full budget that includes services for immigrants and refugees. “Language access is a civil right and our community members, our families deserve to have their needs met,” said Michael Aguhar of
the Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment. “That is why the PAVE coalition is fighting for the Immigrant Services Line Item and programs like the Immigrant Family Resource Program.” For Automatic Voter Registration, members of the coalition met with key legislators to encourage a vote on the bill, which was proposed earlier this year and has been passed by 4 other states.
Consul General hails Hyderabad culture BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Hyderabad has always remained as a point of convergence of many different cultures, traditions, festivals, and religions that gave it its distinct cosmopolitan character. The words of praise for the historical Indian city came from Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Consul General of India in Chicago during his inaugural address of the “Celebration of the Glory of Hyderabad” held under the patronage of Consulate General of India in Chicago, on May 15 at Shalimar Banquets, 280 W. North Ave. Addison, IL. He also said that Hyderabad’s lingua franca, ‘Dakhini’, was a unique blend of several languages, typifying the true plural character of the city, where people belonging to different castes, creed, and religions live in peace and harmony and participate in each other’s festivals with enthusiasm. efforts being undertaken to host the ATA Convention which he said was poised to bring in an unprecedented attendance of Telugus from all across the globe including India. Keerthi Kumar Ravoori, Convention Media Chair has added that a huge contingent of media press corps is expected to descend in Chicago for the convention as this is the first time that the convention is evoking much larger interest among the burgeoning Telugu communities in America. In another development, American Telugu Association continued its Convention Registration Drive in partnership with Telugu Sangham in Quad City region covering Iowa and Illinois. This registration drive drew large number of families demonstrably showing ardent desire by actively registering for the convention.
“Automatic Voter Registration will benefit the Asian American voters across Illinois,” said Selma D’Souza of Indo American Center. “We want Automatic Voter Registration because it simplifies the voter registration process, and empowers our community by removing another barrier that often stands between us and participating in this democracy.” Members of the PAVE Coalition include Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Chicago, Cambodian Association of Illinois, Chinese American Service League, Chinese Mutual Aid Association, Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community, Hamdard Center for Health and Human Services and Indo‐American Center. Healthy lifestyle can help you live cancer-free NEW YORK: Just adopting a healthy lifestyle by refraining from drinking alcohol and smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight and exercising regularly can help you keep deadly cancer at bay, new research reaffirms. About 20-40 percent of cancer cases could potentially be prevented through modifications to adopt a healthy lifestyle, the study found. A large proportion of cancer cases and deaths can be prevented if people quit smoking, avoided heavy
drinking, maintained a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 27.5, and got moderate weekly exercise for at least 150 minutes or vigorous exercise for at least 75 minutes, the study said. The team from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, conducted the study that included 89,571 women and 46,399 men. Individuals who met all four criteria were considered low risk and everyone else was high risk, the researchers advised. Thee estimated that about 20 percent to 40 percent of cancer cases and about half of cancer deaths could potentially be prevented through modifications to adopt the healthy lifestyle pattern of the low-risk group.
as compared to 15 percent in 2012. “The study was focused on children’s smartphone ownership,” Stacy DeBroff, CEO and founder of Influence Central was quoted as saying. Unlike in the past where mobile phones were used by kids
to connect with their parents, in the present times, they are increasingly used for a host of other activities like games, she added. The data comes from the agency’s larger ongoing study of about 500 women and their buying habits across the US.
LONDON: In this scorching heat, chilled beer is what comes to your rescue but what if it has gone stale, threatening to spoil your party? No worries as now there is a smartphone app that can tell you if your beer is fresh to be gulped down tonight. Chemists from the Complutense University of Madrid have developed a method that allows brewers to measure the freshness of beer by using a polymer sensor that changes color upon detecting furfural - a compound that appears when this beverage ages and gives it a stale flavor. The sensor can be controlled from a smartphone app. The team has also created a mobile app for Android smartphones that, by taking a picture of the sensor disc, allows for the identification of the amount of furfural present in the beer. The app is available as open source and any programmer can utilise and modify it to be used on other platforms.
Hooked to selfies? See your self in normal photo first IANS, TORONTO
I
f you are never tired of posting selfies on Facebook and Instagram, it is time to sit back and look at your face carefully. According to the researchers, most people who post regular selfies are not attractive and overestimate their beauty which may make them narcissists. According to the team from University of Toronto, participants ranked frequent selfie takers as less attractive and less likeable compared to those who did not go overboard with self-portraits. To reach this conclusion, the team led by Daniel Re analysed selfie-taking habits of 198 college students. Selfie lovers were asked to take selfies and were then photographed by one of the team members. Now, the researchers had selfies and normal pictures of the participants to analyse, www.psypost.org reported. “Both groups, the habitual selfie-takers and non-selfie-takers, showed self-favoring bias by thinking that they would be seen as more attractive and more likeable in their photos than they were
actually seen by the independent raters,” the report added. The selfie-takers overestimated themselves significantly more in the study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. Both groups’ selfies were rated as less attractive than the experimenter-taken photos by the independent raters.
“They also thought the selfietakers looked significantly more narcissistic than the non-selfie-takers on the basis of their selfies,” the report added. According to the team, frequent selfie taking may increase people’s susceptibility to self-favoring bias causing them to overestimate the attractiveness of their photos.

Cancer killing Indian women
Cancer is fast spreading in India and nearly 3.5 lakh women face deaths owing to cancer each year RACHEL V THOMAS, NEW DELHI

t a time when cancer is fast spreading its tentacles globally owing to genetic, environment and lifestyle factors, India is also witnessing a steep rise in cancer cases and significantly, more and more women are falling prey to the emperor of all maladies, top health care providers stress. Mom’s voice activates many regions in children’s brain NEW YORK: The mother’s voice can lighten up and engage the child’s brain far more than the voices of women they do not know, say researchers including an Indian-origin scientist. The findings showed that brain regions that respond more strongly to the mother’s voice extend beyond regions of hearing. It included regions of emotion and reward processing, social functions, detection of what is personally relevant and face recognition. “Many of our social, language and emotional processes are learned by listening to our mom’s voice,” said lead author Daniel Abrams from Stanford University in the US. “We wanted to know: Is it just auditory and voice-selective areas that respond differently, or is it more
broad in terms of engagement, emotional reactivity and detection of salient stimuli,” added Vinod Menon, professor at Stanford University. The team examined 24 children ages 7 to 12. None had any developmental disorders, and were raised by their biological mothers. The results revealed that the children could identify their own mother with 97 percent accuracy, even after listening to recordings.

riages and child bearing. Some of them opt for hormone replacement therapies which further increases the risk of cancer. Therapies, like controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) -- the hormone treatment required for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) -- must be avoided as it increases estrogen and progesterone levels which has been suspected to increase breast cancer risk. The lifestyle problems have contributed to breast, ovarian and cervix uteri cancers among women, says the ‘Globocan’ project study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
R
unning barefoot is better than running with shoes for your working memory which refers to our ability to recall and process information, according to a study. “Working memory is increasingly recognized as a crucial cognitive skill, and these findings are great news for people looking for a fun way to boost their working memory,” said Tracy Alloway from University of North Florida in the US. The researchers enlisted 72 participants between the ages of 18
and 44, who ran both barefoot and with shoes on at a comfortable, self-selected pace for about 16 minutes. The results revealed a significant increase -- approximately 16 percent -in working memory performance in the barefoot-running condition. “If we take off our shoes and go for a run, we can finish smarter than when we started,” added another researcher Ross Alloway. When running barefoot, one often has to avoid stepping on potentially hurtful objects by using precise foot placement.
Cheers! Red wine can offset effects of high fat diet IANS, NEW YORK
G
iving red wine lovers a new reason to celebrate, researchers have found that an compound in this drink could help counteract the negative impact of high fat/high sugar diets. The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology, point to the health benefit of resveratrol, which occurs naturally in blueberries, raspberries, mulberries, grape skins and consequently in red wine. For the study, J.P. Hyatt from Georgetown University and his team fed a control group of rhesus mon-
keys a healthy diet and another group a high fat/high sugar diet, half of which also received a resveratrol supplement and half did not. Three types of muscles were examined: a “slow” muscle, a “fast” muscle and a “mixed” muscle. The study showed that each muscle responded differently to the diet and to the addition of resveratrol. Of the three lower hind leg muscles analysed for this study, the soleus was the most effected by the high fat/high sugar diet and also most effected by the resveratrol supplements. This may be partially due to the fact that, on a daily basis, it is used much more than
the other two muscles. The plantaris muscle, a 5-10 cm long muscle along the back of the calf, did not have a negative response to the high fat/high sugar diet, but it did have a positive response to the addition of resveratrol. The third muscle was not affected by the diet or addition of resveratrol. While these results are encouraging and there might be a temptation to continue eating a high fat/high sugar diet and simply add a glass of red wine or a cup of fruit to one’s daily consumption, the researchers stressed the importance of a healthy diet.
