Brown funeral: Call for justice IANS, WASHINGTON
L
eaders of the AfricanAmerican community asked for justice during the funeral of Michael Brown on August 25, and made a conciliatory call for change to avoid further tragedies like the fatal shooting of the young black man by a white police officer that set off two weeks of unrest in the U.S. state of Missouri’s Ferguson town. The closed casket of Brown, 18, adorned with two photos of him as a child and several garlands of white and red flowers, was at the center of the ceremony at the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. Hundreds of people had congregated since dawn to attend the service. The Rev. Al Sharpton had words of comfort for the parents of the dead teenager, Michael Brown Sr. and Lesley McSpadden, and also a message
for the authorities. “We are required to leave here today and change things. Michael Brown must be remembered for more than disturbances. He must be remembered for this is when they started changing what was going on,” Sharpton said. Among those in attendance were the Rev. Jesse Jackson; Martin Luther King III, son of the slain civil rights leader; director Spike Lee and three White House officials. Sharpton slammed the fact that the youth’s body was left almost 4 1/2 hours in the street for all to see. The Brown case has exposed the racial differences still underlying American society, and the economic and social inequalities that exist in some communities like Ferguson, a town where two-thirds of the roughly 21,000 residents are African American, but all three members of the police force are white.

Modus vivendi between Modi and RSS? Narendra Modi’s non-confrontationist style vis-a-vis the RSS, unlike in 2002, aims at ensuring peace and stability for the sake of India’s development AMULYA GANGULI, NEW DELHI
A
lthough the assertions of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat about India being a Hindu nation and that all its citizens are Hindus in a cultural sense have long been among the basic tenets of the Hindu nationalist outfit, the reiteration of these old postulates undoubtedly has something to do with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) assumption of power at the centre. The RSS apparently believes that the time has come at last for its dream of converting India into a Hindu ‘rashtra’ (nation) to be fulfilled with the help of a friendly government. In fact, the RSS is even refraining from uttering the words, India or Bharat, which are used in the constitution to describe the country. Instead, the RSS uses the word Hindustan, the land of Hindus, presumably to facilitate the process of transition to the Hindu rashtra.
What is noteworthy, however, about these provocative postures — for both minorities and liberalminded Hindus — is that there hasn’t been a word in either endorsement or condemnation by the Narendra Modi government. The silence is odd considering that one of the BJP ministers in Goa, who is a Christian, has dittoed the views of the RSS and has described himself as a Hindu Christian. It is possible that the government and the RSS have evolved a modus vivendi whereby the latter will be allowed to pursue its proHindu agenda as long as there is no disruption of communal peace and direct interference in governance. In this context, the initiative taken by the Hindutva camp to put the construction of the Ayodhya temple on hold is probably a part of this deal. As a VHP office-bearer has said, the outfit at present will “run only constructive programmes for expansion of the organization”, eschewing “an agenda of agitation (for) it can

When Vajpayee was PM, the differences between him and the RSS were mainly about his line of moderation. Where Modi is concerned, the differences relate not only to his present non-confrontationist style, unlike in 2002, but also on ensuring peace and stability for the sake of Inida’s development. It is anybody’s guess how long this circle of varying perceptions can be squared.
Indian scientists find a ‘wonder herb’ in high Himalayas ANJALI OJHA, LEH

n the high hostile peaks of the Himalayas where sustaining life is a challenge in itself, Indian scientists say they have found a “wonder herb” which can regulate the immune system, help adapt to the mountain environment and, above all, protect from radioactivity. Rhodiola, a herb found in the cold and highland climate, has led India’s leading scientists to wonder if it is the end to the quest for “Sanjeevani”, the mythical herb that gave renewed life to Ram’s brother Lakshman in the epic Ramayana. Locally called ‘Solo’ in Ladakh, the qualities of Rhodiola were largely unknown so far. The leafy parts of the plant were used as vegetable by locals. However, research by the Leh-based Defense Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) is exploring the therapeutic values of the herb that shows it can do wonders for the

troops posted in difficult high altitude areas like the 5,400-metershigh Siachen glacier. “Rhodiola is a wonder plant that has immunomodulatory (enhancing immune), adaptogenic (adapting to difficult climatic condition) and radio-protecting abilities due to presence of secondary metabolites and phytoactive compounds unique to the plant,” R.B. Srivastava, Director, DIHAR, told IANS. Srivastava said the herb can mitigate the effects of gamma radiation used in bombs in biochemical warfare. “A concerted effort involving conservation, propagation and sustainable utilization of this unique medicinal herb will surely result in rediscovery of Sanjeevani for the troops deployed in extreme climatic condition along Himalayan frontiers,” said the director. The Leh-based lab of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the world’s highest agro-animal
research laboratory, has been researching on this wonder plant for more than a decade. “While its adaptogenic qualities can help the soldiers in adjusting to the low pressure-low oxygen environment, the plant has also been found to have anti-depressant and appetizer properties,” said Srivastava. In the barren glacier of Siachen where white is the only color visible for miles, depression is a problem troops face. The high altitude and harsh climate also make them lose appetite. DIHAR has already developed Herbal Adaptogenic Appetizer, and Herbal Adaptogenic Performance Enhancer that improves performance in extreme high altitude conditions, and has been highly appreciated by the Army. Rhodiola is also found in other parts of the world with other countries like the U.S. and China engaging in research on the wonder herb.

BJP SIDELINING OLD GUARDS? Move marks the culmination of a generational shift that began in BJP when Narendra Modi was made PM candidate IANS, NEW DELHI

Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, the BJP on August 26 came up with a list of its highest decision-making body, the parliamentary board, which excluded the seniors. The move marked the culmination of the generational shift that began in the Bharatiya Janata Party when Narendra Modi was made the prime ministerial candidate. The BJP instead included the seniors in a separate group, the

Modi and Rajnath Singh are also in the parliamentary board. “Party president Amit Shah has constituted a ‘margdarshak’ committee with veteran party leaders as its members for guiding party activities,” an official release said. Congress leader Rashid Alvi dismissed it as an “old age home” for leaders. “It is a ‘mookdarshak mandal’ (committee of silent watchers).
It is like an old age home from where Advani and Joshi will witness the functioning of BJP like mutes. We were all aware that they are being sidelined,” he told reporters. Congress leader Manish Tewari said it was “centralization of power”. “Very soon, only two leaders from Gujarat will be there. The exit of Advani and Joshi is the first step, it will soon be a twomember party,” Tewari said.

Onus is on PM to bar tainted ministers: SC NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court dismissed on August 27 a petition on appointment of ministers with criminal background in what many termed a split verdict. The apex court refused to disqualify tainted ministers, leaving it to “PM’s wisdom” to decide his cabinet, according to reports. A five-judge Constitution bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, R.M. Lodha, delivered its verdict on whether the Supreme Court could direct the Prime Minister to remove such ministers. “Those in conflict with law and involved in offenses of moral turpitude and corruption should not be allowed to discharge duty as ministers,” the apex court observed. “Prime Minister and chief ministers should not include people with criminal antecedents in their cabinet,” the SC added. “Constitution reposes immense trust in PM and CMs and they are expected to act with responsibility and with constitutional morality.” The Narendra Modi government has 11 ministers who have police cases against them.

The decision was reached following India and Pakistan’s directors general of military operations (DGMOs) speaking to each other on hotline earlier in the day, Dawn reported. “Both sides mutually agreed to reduce tension along the Line of Control and working boundary,” a statement of Pakistani army’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in

Vibrant Gujarat to host 7 partner countries NEW DELHI: Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on August 27 called upon India Inc to participate in the biennial investment summit ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ 2015, which is being partnered by seven countries. “The seventh ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit has attracted the partnership of seven countries and a few states in India and I hope that it will lead India to shine across the seven seas,” said the chief minister while addressing the curtain-raiser event here for the
investment summit to be held next year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the three-day event, Patel said. According to the organizer of the event, the partner countries in the seventh edition will include Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore and South Africa. The seventh edition of the bi-annual investment summit ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ will be held on January 11-13, 2015 at Gandhinagar.
he Supreme Court on August 25 held the coal blocks allocated from 1993 onwards by a steering committee and through government dispensation route were illegal, arbitrary, and non-transparent without any objective criteria but did not cancel them yet. A bench of Chief Justice R.M. Lodha, Justice Madan B. Lokur, and Justice Kurian Joseph said: “The entire allocation of coal block as per recommendations
made by the Screening Committee from July 14, 1993 in 36 meetings and the allocation through the government dispensation route suffers from the vice of arbitrariness and legal flaws.” Pronouncing the judgment, Chief Justice Lodha noted there was “no objective criteria” for evaluation of comparative merit.
“The approach had been adhoc and casual. There was no fair and transparent procedure, all resulting in unfair distribution of the national wealth. Common good and public interest have, thus, suffered heavily.” The verdict came on a batch of PILs initially by advocate M.L.Sharma and NGO Common Cause.

Zakaria faces fresh plagiarism charges The Indian-American journalist faces accusations from internet watchdogs; Zakaria refutes charges ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON
I
ndian-American journalist Fareed Zakaria, who two years ago got away from a plagiarism controversy claiming he made a “terrible mistake”, is facing fresh plagiarism charges from anonymous internet watchdogs. The website Our Bad Media in a report by @blippoblappo and @crushingbort cited 12 instances where Zakaria appears to have lifted passages wholesale from other authors. “Their findings cast doubt on the three news outlets —Time Magazine, CNN and The Washington Post — which claimed to have conducted reviews of Zakaria’s work and found the so-called ‘mistake’ to be an isolated incident,” said Politico, an influential news site. “Did CNN, The Washington Post, and Time actually check Fareed Zakaria’s work for plagiarism?” the two bloggers asked, noting that Zakaria was cleared “after what three of the biggest news outlets in America wrote off as an isolated, one-time mistake”. But the cited instances “seem unlikely to have been the result of another notes mix-up by Zakaria”, said Bad Media which in July exposed Buzzfeed’s Benny Johnson

fter 50 days of fighting that claimed over 2,200 lives, Israeli and Palestinian leaders reached an open-ended cease-fire agreement on August 26 that promised only limited change to conditions in Gaza and left unresolved the broader issues underpinning the conflict. Hamas declared victory even though it had abandoned most of its demands, ultimately accepting an Egyptian-brokered deal that differs little from one proffered on the battle’s seventh day. The deal put both sides back where they were at the end of eight days of fighting in 2012, with terms that called for easing but not lifting Israeli restrictions on travel, trade and fishing in Gaza. In Israel, continued barrages of rocket fire and fears about starting school on August 25 without a cease-fire had increased pressure on the government from citizens exhausted by what had become a war of attrition. Yuval Steinitz, a senior Israeli minister, said in a tele-

We become closer to Jerusalem and our Palestinian lands.” A statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry described the deal as representing “the aspirations of the Palestinian people”.
Eradicating IS not easy: Obama WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama said on August 26 that wiping out a radical group like the Islamic State (IS) will not be easy an easy task. The U.S. president made the comment as he authorized surveillance flights over Syria, a move seen as a precursor to step up U.S. efforts in the war-torn country to combat the Islamic State, including possible air strikes on its targets. “Rooting out a cancer like IS won’t be easy, and it won’t be quick,” he said in a speech delivered at the annual
convention of the American Legion in Charlotte, North Carolina. The American President once again ruled out sending back US combat troops to Iraq, where US warplanes are continuing their air raids on the Islamic State targets, which was launched Aug 8. “Let me say it again, US combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq,” Obama said. “We’ll not allow the US to be dragged back into another ground war in Iraq,” he added.
Putin, Poroshenko hold bilateral meet MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko on August 26 held a bilateral meeting in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. This is the first bilateral meeting between the heads of the two countries since Poroshenko took office in May, Xinhua reported. “A bilateral meeting is underway ... there are very many topics for discussion,” Peskov was quoted as saying. The meeting took place when heads
of the Customs Union and Ukraine met here to discuss the Ukraine crisis and economic cooperation. Earlier, Putin and Poroshenko had a brief conversation at the D-Day celebration ceremony in France in June. “Complicated” talks were held, with the sides at times presenting “radically different” positions at a summit of the Russian-led Customs Union in Minsk, Belarus. Putin said earlier he’s ready for an exchange of opinions on Ukraine.

ISLAMABAD: Lahore High Court (LHC) on August 26 ordered filing of an FIR against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his party leaders over an incident of violence in Lahore, prompting cleric Tahir-ul Qadri to demand those found responsible be hanged. At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured in a clash between police and Qadri’s Pakistan Awami League (PAT) in Lahore’s Model Town area, after a police party tried to remove barriers around Qadri’s house and the Minhajul Quran Secretariat. The Judicial Tribunal constituted to probe the tragedy had held Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who is the brother of Nawaz Sharif, and the Punjab government responsible for it, Dawn reported. In a speech to the people participating in the sit-in protest, PAT chief Qadri said the tribunal had come to the conclusion that the Punjab government was responsible for the carnage in Model Town.
SC for a political solution of fishermen issue NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on August 26 said the issues affecting the Tamil Nadu fishermen including the release of those languishing in Sri Lankan jails could be resolved only through political and diplomatic channels as it has no jurisdiction to issue direction to a foreign government. A bench of Chief Justice R.M.Lodha, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman said this while asking the petitioners — DMK’s A.K. Vijayan, AIDMK member and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai to approach the government for the solution of the Tamil Nadu fishermen’s
problem vis-a-vis Sri Lanka. Disposing the petitions by two lawmakers who had sought the court’s intervention for the resolution of Tamil Nadu fishermen problems, the court asked them to make a representation to the new government for the redressal of their grievance.
Afghan women drivers: A rare, cherished scene KABUL: In many countries, to see women drivers on streets is a familiar sight. In China and many European countries, it is not uncommon to see women driving taxis, buses and even heavy trucks. But in Afghanistan, a conservative Muslim country, to see a woman driver is still a rarity. That was why when a young lady was seen driving in a street in the eastern part of capital Kabul, she was followed by curious onlookers, Xinhua news agency reported. Some young kids flying kites and riding horses and elderly people in their yards had to stop at what they were doing to take a look at the young lady-driver. It was as if they have seen a ghost. “I am trying to learn how to drive so
that I can drive in going to the university and in visiting friends and relatives. I also intend to drive to my office once I get employed after graduation, “ said the young lady on condition of anonymity. The lady driver, in her twenties and wearing a scarf, said in other countries, women can drive cars and even airplanes. “Why can ‘t we do it in Afghanistan?” she asked.

ndhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on August 25 met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and urged him to fulfill the commitments made by the central government in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Naidu requested the prime minister to speed up the process of according special status to Andhra Pradesh and to provide funds to cover the entire revenue deficit of the state, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sources said in Hyderabad. Cong wins two, BJP one in K’taka by-polls BANGALORE: The ruling Congress wrested the prestigious Bellary (ST) seat and retained Chikkodi-Sadalga in the Karnataka by-polls by huge margins on August 25, thereby recovering from the setback suffered in the 2014 general election in the state. The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, had the consolation of retaining Shikaripura by a narrow margin in the by-elections held on August 21. N.Y. Gopalakrishna of the Congress trounced Obalesh of the BJP by 33,104 votes in the Bellary reserved constituency, 330 km from Bangalore. The election was held following the resignation of former BJP minister B.R. Sriramulu, who contested on the BSR ticket in the May 2013 assembly polls, upon winning the Bellary Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket. In Chikkodi-Sadalga, Ganesh Hukkeri of the Congress defeated K.M. Mallikarjun of the BJP by 31,820 votes. The resignation of former Congress minister Prakash Hukkeri, father of Ganesh, after he won the Chikkodi Lok Sabha seat led to the by-election in this constituency, about 570 km from Bangalore. In Shikaripura, B.Y. Raghavendra of the BJP defeated H.S. Shanthavirappa Gowda of the Congress by a slender margin of 6,430 votes. The resignation of former chief minister and BJP vice-president B.S. Yeddyurappa on winning from the Shimoga Lok Sabha seat necessitated the by-poll here in Malnad region, about 260 km from Bangalore. The regional outfit Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) did not contest the bypolls. The by-elections witnessed a record voter turnout in all three assembly segments, with 86 percent in Chikkodi, 72 percent in Shikaripura and 71 percent in Bellary.

ministers with a long wish list. He also understood to have urged Modi to allocate funds for development of new state capital and for construction of Polavaram dam, which was declared a national project in the act. Naidu, who is also TDP chief, wanted the central government to immediately extend tax incentives to Rayalaseema and north Andhra as committed by the then UPA government in Parliament. Naidu discussed with Modi and central ministers various issues included in the act and sought immediate measures to fulfill the commitments. On the first day of his two-day visit, Naidu met Commerce and Industries Minister Nirmala Sithara-
man and urged her expedite the preparation of the Bill for providing industrial incentives to Andhra Pradesh. The chief minister also called Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and discussed the issue of setting up mega food parks and cold storage facilities in the state. Meanwhile, Naidu told reporters in the national capital that he and his Telangana counterpart K. Chandrasekhar Rao decided to work together to solve the outstanding issues between the two states in the interest of people. The TDP chief said Andhra Pradesh continued to reel under the impact of bifurcation. The Chief Minister said the state faced huge revenue deficit and it had no educational institutions.

arring the bars in 20 five star hotels, all the others that are currently open will have to shut down on September 12, a Kerala Minister said on August 26. Excise Minister K. Babu told mediapersons here that there are 730 bars in the state, of which the licenses of 418 have not been renewed this fiscal. “Of the remaining 312 bars, 20 are in five star hotels and barring these, all others will have to close down on September 12. “There was a considered opinion that 15 days notice should be given
to these bars and on August 27 this decision was ratified by the state cabinet and the notices for closure would be served to the bars on August 28,” said Babu after a high level meeting. This new direction has come as part of the decision of the state government last Friday which finalized the new liquor policy to achieve prohibition in the next 10 years. The government on August 26 submitted the new liquor policy to the Kerala High Court, which posted the case for September 17. The new policy also states that only the five-star hotels in the state will serve liquor.

ctor-filmmaker R. Parthiban, who is extremely delighted with the success of his latest Tamil directorial Kathai Thirakkathai Vasanam Iyakkam, says the film didn’t adhere to the regular style of storytelling because it was meant to break it. When Parthiban announced Kathai... a few months back, he promoted it as a film without a story. “For years, audiences have got used to a mundane style of story-

FILM REVIEW | TAMIL
‘Anjaan’ fails to deliver Film: ‘Anjaan’; Cast: Suriya, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Manoj Bajpayee, Vidyut Jamwal, Dalip Tahil, Soori, Brahmanandam, Asif Basra and Murali Sharma; Director: N. Lingusamy; Rating: **
A
njaan is like a battle between Suriya, the star, and Suriya, the actor. Interestingly, the film features him in a double role — one is a star and the other is an actor. But the director has focused on the star only. Suriya, who didn’t mind playing a buck-toothed, dark, ugly hunchback Chinna in Perazhagan or a con man in Pithamagan or the grim police officer in Kaaka Kaaka, didn’t hesitate to experiment, but the film’s plot backfired.
The Suriya we saw in those films may not have been a star then (or maybe he was), but audiences loved him as much as they like him today. Anjaan comes after Suriya’s recent blockbuster Singam 2, and the makers assumed that his success streak would help “Anjaan” in wooing the audience. To cash in on Surya’s success, N. Lingusamy rustled up a gangster revenge drama, inspired by several desi gangster films, but lost the plot. Shot in Mumbai with a host of
Bollywood actors, who are excruciatingly awful in their roles, it also has a romantic track. Samantha romances Suriya, dances with him in a bikini
and the crowd goes berserk. There are punchy dialogues, which are repeated in every fight scene. There’s comedy too, but it
hardly evokes laughter. Look at the irony of Tamil cinema. Movies made here can’t have many dialogues in Hindi because audiences won’t understand. But the filmmakers worked with Bollywood actors in the film because the script demanded so, but they were not allowed to dub in their own voices, as they can’t speak Tamil. So when these actors appear on the screen, you get the feeling that you’re watching a Hindi film dubbed in Tamil. This is precisely why Manoj Bajpayee, one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, always looks like a clown in Tamil films. It is high time Lingusamy, who is reluctant to change, accepts the fact that age-old formula doesn’t work anymore. — Haricharan Pudipeddi

The film is a roller coaster ride, a satire and an observation of the modern Indian man and woman, said a statement. The movie revolves around romance and comedy, with a take on love, relationships, marriage, friendships, plagiarism and happy endings. Directed by duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K., Happy Ending also stars Govinda, Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey in key roles. — IANS
stellar cast only adds to this accomplished film’s sense of creative propriety. Mardaani is a film that makes all the correct noises about child trafficking. And by “correct noises”, I do mean the soundtrack, which is among the most evocative provocative and satisfying in recent times. Normally in Bollywood, when films are done with live sound, the effect is scratchy and at times in inaudible. Mardaani cleans out the noises and yet retains a high decibel of authenticity in the complementary relationship between sight and sound. This is a film that knows its job. This, then, is the world of Pradeep Sarkar’s derelict people. Posh pimps and “cool” flesh traders gnawing at the fabric of our society by playing with the lives of the most innocent and vulnerable. Without the least fuss, director
Pradeep Sarkar (so eloquent in his last film outing with Rani in ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’) provides us vivid glimpses into the life of the cop-hero Shivani (Rani). Towards the end, the film’s elegant pace slackens, sags and almost collapses. But somehow, Sarkar manages to keep the proceedings from getting dragged down by the drama, no matter how unruly they progressively gets. The narrative is well-stocked with signs of conscientiousness. Human trafficking is evidently not a pretext to assemble a thriller here. — Subhash K. Jha
Shooting for ‘Gandhi’ was a revelation: Rohini Hattangadi

IANS, LONDON
ctor and theatre personality Rohini Hattangadi played Kasturba in the late Richard Attenborough's Gandhi and says that working in the multiple Oscar winning film was a revelation for her. She said that the British film director gave a bound script to everyone and followed it religiously. Attenborough died at the age of 90 on August 24. “I still remember vividly how I got Kasturba's role in Gandhi. At that time I was doing Marathi theatre when casting agent Dolly Thakore contacted me to meet Sir Richard,” said Rohini. “He was going from Delhi to London via Mumbai. Luckily, I was in Mumbai that day. I met him for an hour. We spoke about theatre and then he left. I later got to know he had so many other actresses for Kasturba's role. So I didn't really bank on getting the role. But the very next day Dolly called to say I had to leave for London for shooting immediate-

ly,” she added. It wasn't easy for Rohini to pack her bags and hop on the plane, but thankfully things fell in place. “I was booked for the coming weeks for my play. I didn't even have a passport. So how was I supposed to leave for London all of a sudden? But Dolly said she'd help me with all the travel details. In eight days, I got a temporary passport and the producer of my play was very accommodating.

Everything just fell into place...” Gandhi was Rohini's first international film. “Shooting for Gandhi was a revelation for me. We were all given scripts and then we were asked to do our homework. I searched for books on Kasturba, but I found only two books, that's all. So I had to rely on my own skills. At the same time Sir Richard did not allow us to deviate from the script. He was very clear on how he wanted my
English pronunciation. He didn't want me to put on an accent. At the same time, he didn't want any Maharashtrian or Marathi pronunciation in my speech. Sir Richard also made me and Ben Kingsley learn to spin the charkha. We spent two-and-a-half months learning both,” she said. Released in 1982, the biographical film brought the life of Gandhi on celluloid and the appreciation that the film garnered.

Actor Chitrangada Singh has no film in her kitty MUMBAI: Where has Chitrangada Singh disappeared? The hot actor, who appeared to have a happening career until recently, seems to have vanished from the industry. It’s true, one spots her at events but it looks like the actress has no film in her kitty. Earlier at least she had mentor Sudhir Mishra to fall back on, but ever since they had a fall out, the lady appears to be on her own. Chitrangada is a good actress and it’s a pity that no producer appears to be keen on signing her. Earlier, Chitrangada Singh launched Jaipur Jewels at Nepean Sea Road. Chitrangda looked gorgeous in ‘Eclate’ limited edition piece from the Make Time Stop Collection, which she teamed with a peach color bustier flowing gown. ''I am happy to be associated with a brand like Jaipur Jewels, which is not only creating beautiful pieces of art but masterpieces that tell a story through period jewellery. I am honoured to launch their brand new avatar and the limited edition collection. With the jewellery and piece of history I am adorning today, it really did make my time stop’’, said Chitrangada Singh as she launched the brand. Chitrangada Singh was styled by stylist Meher Ahmed.
Ice bucket challenge hits B-Town, celebs get chills MUMBAI: After amassing global popularity, the ALS ice bucket challenge, which involves dumping buckets of ice water over one’s head to spread awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig’s disease, has found patrons in Bollywood. From Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachchan to Sunny Leone, Dia Mirza and Bipasha Basu — Hindi film actors are following in the footsteps of globally popular names like George W. Bush, Bill Gates, Stephen King, Christiano Ronaldo, Lady Gaga, Robert Pattinson, Zac Efron, Vin Diesel, Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hugh Jackman and Mickey Rourke, to take the online trend with gusto. Riteish Deshmukh is said to have taken the lead among B-Town celebs after being ‘nominated’ by tennis star Sania Mirza. He then picked Abhishek Bachchan, Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra, leading to a chain of celebrities who were happy to douse themselves in ice water for a global cause. The challenge involves people experiencing a bucket full of ice water on video, posting it onsocial media and then nominating others to do the same - all in an effort to raise awareness for ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS Charity of their choice, or do both. This viral sensation requires people to use the hash tag #IceBucketChallenge, and it has attracted thousands of followers across the world. As of August 21, the ALS Association had received $41.8 million in donations compared to $2.1 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21), according to its official website. These donations have come from existing donors and 739,275 new donors to the Association. Bollywood is doing its spreading its bit of awareness.

The witness — Nimish Mahintura — said that on that night the incident is alleged to have occurred “both appeared to be normal and cheering for their team.” Mahintura was sitting in the second row from the back in the same block that night. Referring to the incident alleged by Preity, Mahintura said: “...it was a normal conversation without any signs of physical altercation or aggression. In fact, both appeared to be normal and were cheering for their team.” Later, Mahintura said, he saw Wadia walk up to Preity and have a short conversation with her lasting probably less than a minute. He added, “Then, I saw Ness walk up the aisle past where I was sitting towards the air-conditioned box at the back. I could not hear the conversation since I was not that close and also there was a lot of noise in the stadium.” He reiterated that neither Ness nor Preity seemed upset after the conversation; Preity continued to watch the match while cheering for the team since Sehwag was going great guns against Chennai Super Kings.

THIEVES TARGET SCHOOLS

EKALB COUNTY (Ga.) -- A rash of copper thefts in DeKalb County has school officials putting back-up plans in place before the schools reopen on Monday. According to the police, thieves have targeted 16 schools in the last few weeks costing the school district more than $800,000 in damage. The police, who have now partnered with school officials to stop these thieves from doing any more damage, announced the joint effort at a news conference last week at Stephenson Middle School, one of the schools targeted.
School officials say the thieves stole copper from the air-conditioning units at the school. The police will use their chopper, equipped with infrared imaging and night vision along with extra patrols to catch the thieves. DeKalb’s school superintendent says this has impacted the school district significantly, but they were able to repair the damage at all schools. Though there has been seen an increase in copper thefts at churches and libraries throughout the county, the police rule out it is the same people targeting the schools.

CHEATING PRIEST GETS HIS JUST DESERTS BY A STAFF WRITER

TLANTA (GA) -- A Hindu priest, who sometimes portrayed himself as God on earth, and fattened his bank accounts on the backs of temple devotees, was convicted after a two-week trial by jury in Atlanta, Georgia on August 25. Annamalai Annamalai, a/k/a Dr. Commander Selvam, a/k/a Swamiji Sri Selvam Siddhar, the former leader of the now defunct Norcross, GA-based Hindu Temple of Georgia, was convicted of 34 felony counts. The litany of charges included bank fraud offenses, filing a false tax return, bankruptcy fraud offenses, money laundering, obstruction, false statement offenses, and conspiring to conceal a person from arrest. He is scheduled to be sentenced on November 13, before Atlanta’s District Court Judge Timothy C. Batten Sr. The high-flying priest made all his tainted money through the temple, charging his followers fees in exchange for providing what they thought were spiritual or other services. All the time, he was filching their credit card numbers and getting high on the hog. In a typical transaction, a follower agreed to pay for a particular service with a credit card number by telephone to guarantee payment. Annamalai used the credit card numbers to charge for other purchases. If the devotees disputed the charges with their respective credit card companies, Annamalai submitted false documentation to the credit card companies to support the unauthorized charges. Those transactions formed the basis for his conviction on bank fraud charges. He also used the money the temple raised for the services and donations to fund his personal lifestyle and that of

GOPIO-LA president Kewal Kanda welcomed and thanked the audience for their participation. The organization’s vice president Navin Gupta and treasurer Rajinder Dhunna introduced the five speakers — Aparna Hande (RN), Deepti Singh (former director of nutrition at Kaiser Permanente), K. Shivaprakash (manager of State Bank of India, Calif.), Anne Tahim (CPA) and Anju Garg (entrepreneur and GOPIO-LA joint secretary). They covered topics such as diabetes, nutrition, banking, a checklist of financial do’s and don’ts, and improving protein quality in vegetarian diets. After the informative presentations from the speakers, the program culminated with a live cooking demo by Anju Garg, who was assisted by Shana Rajput. They demonstrated healthy recipes like low-fat paneer fajitas, as well as quinoa and kale salad to the more than 90 attendees.

his family. They owned or controlled numerous homes and real properties, luxury vehicles, and foreign bank accounts in India according to the court papers, the release from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia says. Annamalai was convicted of filing a false tax return for 2007, failing to disclose his financial interest in foreign bank accounts held in India. He was also convicted of bankruptcy fraud offenses in connection with the Hindu Temple’s petition for bankruptcy protection in August 2009. Annamalai concealed assets from creditors and others by diverting credit card receipts and donations intended for the Hindu Temple to a bank account in the name of a different entity. The priest was also convicted of money laundering, using the proceeds from the bankruptcy fraud to pay mortgages on properties that he owned, and payments to himself. Ironically, when the bankruptcy proceedings began against him, Annamalai
closed down the Norcross temple and relocated to a flea market in Dayton, Ohio. Revered by many of his followers as a virtual saint, Annamalai was thought to be a healer of sorts. “He has helped me and millions across the world,” says Narmada Iyer, 38, of Atlanta. “He is my god and he is a righteous man,” Iyer added. Annamalai named the new temple in the flea market the Hindu Temple of Ohio and nicknamed the property “Vishal’s Ranch” after his son. At that time, Ashwani Kumar, a priest at the Hindu Temple of Dayton, said he found it troubling that Annamalai had numerous pictures on the Internet which showed him holding his right hand up to his shoulder with a spinning dial in his hand. “Only gods do this and these are our gods,” says Kumar, adding “To claim you are a god is a very serious matter.” The August 25 conviction also includes three counts of obstruction and false statements in connection with the grand jury investigation and the bankruptcy proceeding. He gave a fraudulent email to an IRS Special Agent, which was falsely made to appear as if the email had been written and authored by a witness of the criminal investigation; and he submitted a false affidavit to the grand jury, and a false affidavit to the Bankruptcy Court in connection with the Hindu Temple’s bankruptcy proceeding. Finally, Annamalai was convicted of conspiring with his spouse and codefendant, Parvathi Sivanadiyan, and others to conceal the arrest of co-defendant Kumar Chinnathambi who was later arrested on July 17, and pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bankruptcy fraud. While Chinnathambi is scheduled to be sentenced on October 24, before Judge Batten, Sr. Sivanadiyan is awaiting trial.

The officers found Lingala writing a note in the basement and did not obey officers when they told him to put his hands up. After they handcuffed Lingala, the officers reportedly found a meat cleaver and a knife with a bloody 8-inch blade.

and her husband for at least nine years but she did not agree to his return because he couldn’t take care of himself anymore. At the August 13 hearing, an interpreter translated from English to Telugu for Lingala, who appeared to show little emotion. When the judge asked Lingala if he knew what he was being charged with, Lingala only responded “yes” after being asked several times. Lingala faces 20 years to life for the first count and anywhere from one to 50 years in prison for the second. Lingala’s passport was revoked as Lingala had indicated to the court that he would like to return to India. He is due back in court on August 29. Lancaster County Court Judge Timothy Phillips set bond at 10 per cent of $1 million so Lingala would have to post $100,000 to be released. His passport was confiscated

ONROE (GA) -- A Hindu temple in Georgia was vandalized by unknown miscreants earlier this month. A Hindu American organization said members of Vishwa Bhavan Mandir in Monroe, Ga., found graffiti and profanity displayed on their place of worship early on the morning of August 2. Spray painted messages included “ha ha” and “LOL.” The Hindu American Seva Communities (HASC), which has taken up the case, said the incident of vandalism had shocked Hindus across the country. “The desecration of the Lord Shiva statue (murti) was significantly heartbreaking for the Hindu community in Georgia, as it is the main deity of worship. Across the country, we find, many mandirs (temples) do not actively voice their concerns other than file a police report,” HASC said in a statement. The statue of the Lord Shiva was covered

with black spray paint. “It is important for our places of worship, around the country, to be aware of what has happened as this could happen to anyone. They should educate themselves and be prepared with a security plan and not wait for an act of vandalism or a hate crime to start the process,” said HASC Indian American board member Anju Bhargava.
In a statement, HASC urged Hindu temples to transform this heinous crime and moment of pain into a moment of understanding towards greater understanding and social harmony. “It is important for us to come together and address the issue of vandalism and hate crime impacting our communities and places of worship,” it said.
Janmashtami, I-Day celebrated at Grayslake Mandir BY A STAFF WRITER
C
HICAGO (IL) -- The Hindu Mandir of Lake County celebrated Janmashtami with due religious fervor and vivacity on August 16, with more than 600 people visiting the temple. Many couples with young children came to witness Baby Krishna sitting in a beautifully decorated cradle along with attractively painted cutouts showing the life of Lord Krishna’s childhood to teen age. The main function started around 6 pm by breaking a candy filled ‘Govinda Mataki’ by young children and adults. Kalash sthapan, Lord Ganesh, and Devi Pujan were performed by Pt. Anil Joshi Ji with all the Vedic rituals with Nikhil and Shruti Sharma. A children’s cultural program was organized by Anu Gupta. Young children less than 10 years performed Radha Krishna dances and sang lyrical devotional bhajans. Musical prayerful bhajans were sung by Atwal, Rita Patel, Atul Soni, Sangeetha Singh, Kamalesh Desai, and Ajaya Ghai. A
Abhiskekam to Lord Krishna
mellow Kannada devotional song was also sung by Geetha Patil. Pt. Joshi Ji gave an enlightening discourse on why Krishna chose prison cell for his birth. Finally, saffron milk Abhishekam was performed by both priests to Baby Krishna. Devotees had an enjoyable moment when three baby Krishnas entered the shrine with their respective Vasudev Babas and they
chanted in chorus “Nanda ki anand bhayo Jai Krishna lal ki.’ On August 17, devotees of the Hindu Mandir also celebrated Indian Independence Day with colorfully dressed children’s procession parade who waved India’s Tirangi Jhanda (tri-color flag). Young children performed classical dances and sang national devotional songs.

The board came heavily on Dhoni’s statement, where the Indian skipper also said that Fletcher ‘is still the boss’, and questioned his status quo in terms of making highprofile decisions. “Dhoni can’t decide who should be coach. BCCI will decide it,” a top BCCI official was quoted to have said by a leading daily. “At the same time, we also want to add that it is the selection committee that will decide the coach and captain for the World Cup,” he added. While Fletcher’s place at the helm of the Indian team’s affairs has come under intense scrutiny after ex-India captain Ravi Shastri was appointed as Director of Cricket for the ongoing ODI series against England. Speaking at a press conference on August 24, the skipper also insisted that the incumbent coach’s powers had not been ‘curtailed’ and the still remained the leader. ed Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo clinched his third victory of 2014 at Spa-Francorchamps on August 24, while Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg survived early contact with team mate Lewis Hamilton to clinch second and extend his championship lead. Force India driver Sergio Perez brought in two points for the team as he finished ninth while teammate Nico Hulkenberg ended 11th and
his Pakistani partner Aisam Qureshi suffered a first round defeat at the Flushing Meadows. It was a tough battle for Bopanna and Qureshi that lasted 152 minutes. They clawed back well into the match by winning the second set 6-4 in 39 minutes. Green tea can protect spinal cord neurons BEIJING: Polyphenols found in green tea are strong antioxidants and can protect your brain in case of a spinal cord injury. Chinese researchers have found evidence that polyphenols can protect spinal cord neurons against oxidative stress and can reduce free radical damage. In lab experiments over rats, lead researcher Jianbo Zhao and co-workers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning Medical University found that green tea extracts significantly lessen oxidative stress and reduce neuronal apoptosis. “The results show that green tea polyphenols can help protect spinal cord neurons against oxidative stress exposure,” Zhao added.

aily exercises to maintain good cardiovascular health also benefits brain, protecting us from cognitive impairment as we age, according to a promising study. Researchers found that healthy lifestyle helps maintain the elasticity of arteries, thereby preventing downstream cerebrovascular damage and resulting in preserved cognitive abilities in later life. Our body’s arteries stiffen with age and the vessel hardening is believed to begin in the aorta — the main vessel coming out of the heart before reaching the brain. “Indeed, the hardening may contribute to cognitive changes that occur during a similar time frame,” said lead researcher Claudine Gauthier from University of Montreal, Canada. They found that older adults whose aortas were in a better condition and who had greater aerobic fitness performed better on a cognitive test. “We think that the preservation of vessel elasticity may be one of the mechanisms that enables exercise to slow cognitive aging,” Gauthier added. This enabled the team to compare the older participants within their peer group and against the younger group who obviously have not begun the ageing processes in question. The results demonstrated age-related declines in executive function, aortic elasticity and cardiorespiratory fitness, a link between vascular health and brain function, and a positive association between aerobic fitness and brain function.
Rule of thumb can control drinking IANS, NEW YORK

id you ever try using a rule of thumb such as a half-glass rule or a two-fingers-fromthe-top rule when pouring wine? Do this if you want to keep your weight in check. Sticking to a general rule of pouring just half a glass of wine limits the likelihood of overconsumption even for men with a higher body mass index (BMI), a study reveals. Researchers found that BMI affected how much men poured but had no influence on women. “About 70 percent of the people in the study used the half-glass rule and they poured significantly less by about 20 percent. It is a big difference,” said Laura Smarandescu, an

assistant professor of marketing at Iowa State University. Men with a higher BMI, who did not use a rule of thumb, poured more — 31 percent more for men considered overweight or obese and 26 percent more for men at the midpoint of the normal BMI range. While BMI did not affect how much women poured, those at the midpoint of the normal BMI poured 27 percent less when using the half-glass rule than those who did not. “But what we found is that the rule of thumb effect is so strong that men using a rule of thumb at all levels of BMI actually poured less than women who were not using a rule of thumb,” added Doug Walker, an assistant professor of marketing.
