Kerry visit a start, Modi visit to US pivotal

John Kerry

After a decade of disengagement with Narendra Modi, now India’s Prime Minister, Washington is now eager to make a fresh start EVAN A. FEIGENBAUM, WASHINGTON

A

s John Kerry’s India visit began on July 30, a raft of crises consume American diplomacy. By contrast, US-India relations are at a moment of opportunity, but the U.S. Secretary of State faces challenges in New Delhi that are significant in their own way. For one thing, after a decade of disengagement with Narendra Modi, Washington is eager to make a fresh start. The U.S. is sending three cabinet secretaries to India in quick succession — Kerry (State), Penny Pritzker (Commerce), and Chuck Hagel (Defense) — and

Washington is preparing to host Modi himself in September. From the U.S. perspective, Modi’s government offers a welcome respite from years of perceived strategic and economic drift under UPA-2. But Kerry’s visit is also very well timed: First, the NDA government has been in office for nearly two months. Modi has met Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, among others, so it is high time for cabinet-level U.S. engagement. Second, as Kerry himself argued in a speech this week, relations with strategically important countries cannot be shunted to the sidelines by crises. For over a decade, India has been

he United States aviation agency has lifted a ban on the country’s flights to an airport in Israel’s western port city of Tel Aviv late on July 23. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) instituted a 24-hour flight prohibition Tuesday after a rocket landed roughly one mile from the airport. “The FAA has lifted its restrictions on U.S. airline flights into and out of Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport by cancelling a ‘notice to airmen’ it renewed earlier today (July 23),” Xinhua quoted an agency statement on July 24.

T The decision was made after the FAA worked with other US government agencies to assess the security situation. The agency carefully reviewed both significant new information and measures the government of Israel is taking to mitigate potential risks to civil aviation, the statement said.

of coordination that reflect the emerging institutional and political set-up in New Delhi. Kerry is attending a Strategic Dialogue that has been a calendar-driven exercise. What the two countries need is a “real” strategic dialogue , built upon a less ritualized but more powerful set of first principles: strengthened coordination, no surprises on core security equities, sensitivity to each other’s domestic constraints, and frequent not ritualized contact at the highest levels. The most immediate need is to strengthen trust after a rough patch. From India’s perspective, the causes of these frictions include U.S. trade cases, the Khobragade debacle, and inadequate U.S. attention to India’s security concerns, especially in India’s neighborhood. From the U.S. perspective such concerns have centered on the scope and pace of Indian economic reforms. These have badly tainted market sentiment and soured U.S. firms on India. Retroactive taxes and the nuclear liability bill have compounded these negative sentiments. Viewed through this prism, the current U.S.-India standoff at the WTO is badly timed. The U.S. side will listen closely to India’s economic priorities. Hopefully, it will bring a few ideas-for example, technology releases, defense licenses, and co-production.

he United States House Rules Committee Thursday approved a resolution allowing the full House to vote on authorizing a lawsuit against US President Barack Obama, accusing him of abusing executive authority. The 7-4 vote was split along partisan lines, just as the vote in the full chamber is sure to be. A vote by the whole House is expected next week, Xinhua reported. The lawsuit has further spawned a fierce debate between the House Republicans and the federal government. Republicans said the ini-

mentation of Obama’s healthcare reform bill. Meanwhile, Obama and congressional Democrats dismissed the suit as an election-year political stunt. The lawsuit mainly focused on Obama’s decision to delay the provisions that require most employers to provide insurance coverage for workers. Republicans said that Obama went beyond his authority by delaying the provision until 2015, after the midterm elections this fall. The lawsuit, if approved tiative is simply aimed at holding by the full House, would be sent to the president accountable for cir- a federal judge to decide whether cumventing Congress on a major the chamber has legal standing to policy change related to the imple- pursue the case.

his week, United States President Barack Obama and his wife will host 12 differently-abled people from all over the world, including one from Mumbai, for an exclusive dinner at the White House. The lucky Mumbaikar from suburban Goregaon is athlete Neha P. Naik, 23, who is a Special Olympics International Global Messenger, besides taking part in the 100 meters and shot-put

events. “It is a great honor and I feel very good. It’s the best birthday gift I can get,” an excited Neha told IANS here, in the midst of lastminute preparations for the momentous occasion slated at the White House on July 31. She turned 24 on July 27, her equally excited mother Asha and realtor father Prakash Naik said.

The family originally hails from Goa and is now settled in Mumbai. For the event, Neha will be accompanied by her mentor and teacher Jonita Rodrigues of the 33year-old Punarvas Education Society’s Shri Devrajji Gundecha Punarvas Special School & Vocational Training Centre for Mentally Handicapped. Asha said that Neha

was born a normal child, but suffered high fever at the age of five, which affected her natural mental growth. “We admitted her to a regular school, but she just couldn’t cope up with her studies. Later, as we realized that she was a different child, we admitted her to Punarvas school,” she said. Since then, Prakash and Asha dedicated their entire life for Neha — their only child — looking after her special requirements, needs and extra-curricular activities.

Gadkari bugging row halts House Media reports on July 27 said bugging devices were found at BJP•leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Delhi residence; Union Minister, however, denied the allegation IANS, NEW DELHI

P

arliament was disrupted on July 30 as the opposition demanded a debate on the reported bugging at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s Delhi residence. As soon as the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha met for the day, members from the Congress were on their feet demanding suspension of question hour to take up a debate on the issue. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has called media reports about a listening device being found at his residence as baseless. Speaking to reporters outside parliament here, the minister said: “I have clearly told you that whatever you are writing and showing is totally false and baseless and there is no truth in it. First it was said that it was my Mumbai residence and now

Union minister Nitin Gadkari

it is the Delhi residence (which is bugged) and there is no truth in it.” In the Rajya Sabha, the opposition, dissatisfied with the minister’s reply, kept pressing for adjourning the question hour. In the ruckus, the house was first adjourned for 15 minutes, and then till noon. When the house reassembled, the issue was raised again by Congress leader Anand Sharma. “Government is tapping phones on a massive scale. Who authorized this? We want a thorough probe,” Sharma said. While Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien insisted that the zero hour should be taken up, opposition members kept pressing for their demand. Kurien then adjourned the house for 10 minutes. Congress leader Satyavrat Chaturvedi accused the government of running away from a debate.

No bugging at Gadkari home, says Rajnath Singh NEW DELHI: There is “no truth” to reports of bugging at union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s residence, said Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. In a statement in the Rajya Sabha, Rajnath Singh said: “I want to clarify that there is no truth in the media reports (about bugging at Nitin Gadkari’s house).” The Union Home Minister added: “Even the minister, at whose residence it was said that high power listening devices were installed, has himself called the reports as completely baseless...and there have been no complaints by the minister or anyone else in this regard.”

G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw will hear the plea that seeks registration of a case and a CBI probe into the matter. Filing the plea, advocate R.P. Luthra said: “The information disclosed by Justice Katju clearly discloses the commission of various cognizable offenses including the offenses covered under prevention of corruption act.” Former Supreme Court judge Katju has alleged that three former chief justices of India — Justice R.C. Lahoti, Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice K.G. Balakrishnan — made “improper compromises” and succumbed to political pressure during the UPA rule from one of its allies, apparently the DMK, in allowing the judge to continue despite an “adverse” Intelligence Bureau (IB) report on allegations of corruption against him.

he Delhi High Court will on August 8 hear a petition seeking de-recognition of the Shiv Sena and direction for disqualification of 11 of its MPs for allegedly forcing a Muslim staffer to eat at Maharashtra Sadan during his Ramadan fast. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw would hear the PIL next week filed by NGO Garib Nawaz Foundation that also sought immediate arrest of the MPs for provoking religious sentiments. It also sought initiation of criminal case against the Shiv Sena MPs, including Sanjay Rout and Rajan Vichare, who represents the Thane Lok Sabha constituency, and asked

for direction to the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha chairman to disqualify 11 of the Sena lawmakers. It has been alleged that July 17, Vichare, irked over the poor quality of food, force-fed Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) employee Arshad Zubair, who was catering supervisor at Maharashtra Sadan, before some television cameras. The IRCTC was providing food for Maharashtra Sadan. The PIL said: “The action of the Shiv Sena MPs with the fasting Muslim supervisor was uncalled for and needed to be dealt with a strict action by party chief Udhav Thackeray.”

Leader of Opposition issue to be decided soon IANS, NEW DELHI

ok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on July 30 said she would take a decision on the Leader of Opposition issue within four days. “I will see all the rules and also the letter of attorney general. I have to see what’s there and what is not,” she told media persons here. Mahajan added: “The speaker cannot do anything...I have to go by the rules. Within one to four days, I’m expecting a decision on this.”

She pointed out instances when there was no Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Responding to it, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said: “The minister concerned has denied the report... we are not running away from any discussion.” As the din continued, the chair adjourned the house till 2 p.m. In the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Congress in the house, Mallikarjun Kharge demanded a statement either by Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the home minister on the issue. He said such bugging incidents had taken place in Gujarat also. He also wanted to know that how many such bugging devices are planted inside the residences of ministers. Media reports on July 27 said bugging devices were found at Gadkari’s Delhi residence. This was, however, denied by Gadkari. Rohatgi, in his opinion to Mahajan, said that Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress leader in the house, cannot be recognised as Leader of Opposition as the party’s strength was only 44 while onetenth of the total strength of the house is 55.

NEW DELHI: The UPSC row again echoed in Rajya Sabha on July 30 with the JD-U and other opposition parties questioning what the government is doing to resolve it. Raising the issue in the house, Janata Dal-United leader Sharad Yadav questioned what steps are being taken by the government. “What is the government doing to resolve the issue? It is not just about the students from Hindi belt, it is about students of regional languages as well,” Yadav said. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prakash Javadekar assured the house that government will take a decision in favor of the students. “We will sort out the issue and take a decision in favor of the students. As soon as the decision is taken we will inform the house,” Javadekar said. The CSAT-II paper carries questions on comprehension, interpersonal skills including communication skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision-making and problemsolving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and English language comprehension skills (of Class X level). The home ministry has assured the issue will resolved in a week.

Congressman makes NRI officials ‘feel outsiders’ A newly elected member of the House of Representatives mistakes two senior Indian-American officials to be from India IANS,WASHINGTON

I

n an extremely awkward incident, a newly elected member of the United States House of Representatives mistook two senior Indian American officials of the Barack Obama administration to be from India and asked them questions about “your country” and “your government”. “I’m familiar with your country; I love your country,” Republican Curt Clawson told Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on July 24, Foreign Policy online reported. Biswal is the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian

Affairs and Arun Kumar is the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service. Clawson, apparently confused by their Indian surnames and skin tone

‘I made a mistake in speaking before being fully briefed and I apologize’ also asked Biswal and Arun Kumar if the Indian government could loosen restrictions on US capital investments in the country. “I think your question is to the

Indian government,” Biswal responded. According to the report, it is extremely uncommon for foreign officials to testify before Congress under oath. Following Clawson’s opening statement, Eliot Engel, the full panel’s ranking Democrat, pointed out that Biswal and Arun Kumar work for the U.S. Government. “ An update in the Foreign Policy report said: “While Clawson’s office did not respond to a request for comment, the Congressman apologized in a statement to USA Today later on July 25. “I made a mistake in speaking before being fully briefed and I apologize. I’m a quick study, but in this case I shot an air ball,” he said.

Doctor indicted for running Baby’s death to be independently probed illegal prescription racket IANS, LONDON

IANS, WASHINGTON

A

court in the United States has indicted an Indian-origin doctor of illegally running a prescription racket that led to the death of one patient and harming the health of many others, media reported. A jury in the federal court of Alexandria, Virginia, concluded that Nibedita Mohanty illegally prescribed medicines under the guise of treating chronic patient. Mohanty prescribed narcotic pills to patients who had been jailed for

selling controlled substances and even to someone who, she was explicitly told, would sell the drugs to pay another patient’s bond, the Washington Post reported citing the indictment. Despite being warned by another doctor about a patient who had painkiller addiction, she continued to prescribe OxyContin, Percocet and Dilaudid to that patient. The patient was hospitalized with drug overdose but Mohanty discharged her and less than two weeks later, prescribed more painkillers, the Post report said. A day later, the patient died of oxydone overdose.

A

n independent probe has been ordered into the case of an Indian-origin woman who battered her three-year-old son to death in Scotland, media reported. The announcement came hours after Rosdeep Adekoya, 35, admitted to assaulting and killing her son, Mikaeel Kular, in their Edinburgh home and hiding his body in a bush behind her sister’s house 25 miles away in a forest area in Fife county, the Fife Today reported on July 25. The Fife council in Scotland said that an independent case review will be done into the incident. The joint chief officers group of Fife and City of Edinburgh has decided to conduct a significant case review following the tragic death of Mikaeel Kular, the council said.

While announcing the move, John Myles, independent chairman of Fife Child Protection Committee said: “It (enquiry) will be led independently and will take place in two phases. The first phase will look at information available from files, records, and policies and procedures that were in place before Mikaeel’s death. Work on this phase has already started.”

“Phase two will take into account any new information that has come to light during the criminal proceedings and will involve interviews with relevant staff,” Myles added. Adekoya also pleaded guilty of lying to the police that her son had gone missing, sparking a massive search by rescuers and emergency teams, before the High Court in Edinburgh on July 25.

PRAYERS, FEAST, PEACE... Millions of Muslims celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr in India and abroad with Prime Minister Modi praying for ‘unity and brotherhood in our nation’ IANS, NEW DELHI

I

n innumerable urban and rural centers, Muslims poured into mosques and large open grounds and offered Eid prayers to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Eid prayers were also offered at the 17th century Taj Mahal. Barring the Kashmir Valley, where youths clashed with security forces for a few hours, the day was celebrated peacefully and with visible joy all across the country. With over 170 million Muslims, India is home to the third largest Islamic population in the world after Indonesia and Pakistan. Modi, who became prime minister only two months ago, greeted the nation on the occasion. “May this auspicious day strengthen the bonds of peace, unity and brotherhood across our nation,” he said.

Islamic scholars underlined the importance of Eid. “It is a festival of peace and love. The sacrosanct occasion teaches people to subside the feeling of hatred and discrimination,” Ashraf Usmani of Darul Uloom, India’s most influential Islamic seminary, told IANS. Maulana Mufti Mukarram, the Naib Imam of Fatehpuri mosque in Old Delhi, said: “It is an occasion when everyone irrespective of religious or social barriers must endorse the message of peace and love.” Attired in new clothes and wearing skull caps, men and children thronged Eidgahs and mosques for namaz. In many mosques, special prayers were held for peace in Gaza, where Israel’s targeting of the Hamas has left hundreds, mainly civilians, dead. The biggest Eid gatherings were reported from Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu

and Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. After the morning prayers, sweets were exchanged with friends and families. Muslims embraced one another with greetings of “Eid Mubarak”. Guests were treated to ‘sheer khorma’ (special sweet made of vermicelli, milk and dry fruits) and other dishes. The festivities extended to the India-Pakistan border in Punjab where Pakistan Rangers offered sweets to the Border Security Force. The Indians and Pakistanis then hugged one another at the bor-

der gates. Muslims across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh celebrated Eid with religious fervour and gaiety — and with prayers for the dead in Gaza. Many families celebrated with simplicity in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Every Muslim family paid Fitra or charity (`80 to `100) on behalf of each member as per the Islamic rules so that the poor can also celebrate the festival. The Kashmir Valley celebrated Eid with the usual religious fervour after the morning festivities were marred by clashes between youths and security forces.

Once peace returned to the valley in the afternoon, people exchanged Eid greetings with families and friends in Srinagar and all major towns in the valley. Children burst firecrackers. The serenity was visible in Uttar Pradesh too. However, security forces kept a vigil in both Saharanpur and Rampur which have been hit by communal violence. In Kerala, where Muslims account for a quarter of the 33 million people, the biggest gatherings took place in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Kannur. In most cities, the prayers took place in grounds and stadiums.

Gaza: No sign of any truce Another Gaza school shelter bombed; toll now 1,253 as Israelis attack Gaza power plant evoking strong protest IANS, GAZA

t least 13 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured early on July 30 when Israeli artillery fire hit a school used as a shelter by displaced people in the northern Gaza Strip town of Jabaliya, as the toll in the coastal enclave in the ongoing offensive rose to 1,253. Health Ministry spokesman in Gaza Ashraf al-Qedra said hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip have so far received the bodies of 13 people and dozens of injured civilians who sheltered at a UN-run school in Jabaliya town, Xinhua reported. Earlier, al-Qedra had said that 20 people were killed. Israel has not commented on the incident so far. On July 29, Israeli attack targeted Gaza power plant evoking strong protests. On July 25, Israeli army struck a UN-run shelter school in the northern Gaza Strip town of Biet Hanoun, killing 16 displaced people and injuring more than 100 others. Earlier on July 30, an Israeli

‘No ceasefire request’ JERUSALEM: Senior Israeli officials on July 29 denied US Secretary of State John Kerry’s claim that Israel had requested the US to extend a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. “Kerry was the one who brought up the option of a ceasefire to Netanyahu, and not the other way around,” Xinhua quoted unnamed officials as saying. “Netanyahu told Kerry that currently the continuation of the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) operation is necessary.”

airstrike killed eight Palestinians, including a child, in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis. Late on July 29, Israeli airstrikes destroyed three mosques and dozens of homes across the embattled Hamas-ruled territory. The Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip, called Operation Protective Edge, was launched on July 8 to end Palestinian rocket firing at Israel. International efforts to end the ongoing fighting have been going on but have failed to achieve tangible results.

US imposes fresh sanctions against Russia WASHINGTON: Washington has imposed new sanctions on Russia’s energy, arms and financial sectors over the Ukraine crisis, US President Barack Obama said on July 29. Building on measures unveiled two weeks ago, the US expanded its sanctions to more Russian banks and defense companies, and blocked the exports of specific goods and technology to Russia’s energy sector, Xinhua quoted Obama telling reporters at the White House. He said the U.S. is formally suspending credit that encourages exports to Russia and financing for economic development projects in Russia. “If Russia continues on this current path, the costs on Russia will continue

to grow,” Obama added. The US imposed sanctions against three state-owned Russian banks, namely Bank of Moscow, Russian Agricultural Bank, and VTB Bank OAO, said the US Treasury Department in a statement. The move prohibits U.S. people from providing new financing to the three financial institutions, limiting their access to the U.S. capital markets.

Indian nurses caught in conflict in Libya NEW DELHI/TRIPOLI: In a near replay of the incidents in Iraq, large numbers of Indian nurses are caught in spiralling violence in Libya, where rival militant groups seek to control the capital’s international airport, and have approached the Indian mission for help and even evacuation. Over the last two weeks, the north African country has plunged into chaos following deadly clashes between government forces and Islamist militants in the capital Tripoli and Benghazi where more than 150 people, most of them civilians, have been killed. Taking note of the fighting, Indian Ambassador in Libya, Azar A.

H. Khan, met the nurses in the Tripoli hospitals and assured them of their safety. “Everybody is safe here. We are in constant touch with the nurses,” Khan told IANS over phone from Tripoli. The ambassador, however, said that only some Indian nationals, mostly nurses, have approached the embassy for help in leaving the country. “It is only in some places around the airport where fighting is raging... rest of the places are fine,” he said. Panic gripped the Indian nationals after incessant shelling rocked the area around Tripoli airport and elsewhere, in a two week-long battle since mid-July.

epal’s three major political parties — the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and UCPN (Maoist) — late on July 29 consented to the government’s plan to sign a power trade agreement (PTA) with India during the forthcoming visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Breaking protocol, Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala will personally receive his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi when he lands in Kathmandu on August 3 on a two-day visit. A special welcome ceremony will be organized at the Tribhuvan International Airport. There will be a guard of honor for Modi, who will be accompanied by a 101-member delegation including seven ministers, senior government officials and captains of industry besides journalists. Dinesh Bhattarai, advisor to Koirala on foreign relations, told IANS that the prime minister himself would welcome Modi. “This reflects the importance Nepal is attaching to Modi’s visit,” he said. Modi is arriving on a twoday official visit in Kathmandu on August 3. The meeting of the major political parties was chaired by Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to seek national consensus on the

If India agrees to sign the PTA as forwarded by Nepal before the visit, it will pave the way for export and import of electricity. Earlier, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on July 27 averted a diplomatic disaster by meeting leaders of the ruling CPN-UML just before returning to India after a three-day visit which she said was “productive” and “successful”. Pak Army chief talks tough on terrorists ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Army chief Raheel Sharif on July 29 said the “terrorists will not be allowed” to return to the North Waziristan tribal region where a major offensive against militants continues. Gen. Sharif was addressing the Pakistani forces involved in operations against the Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants in the region bordering Afghanistan after peace talks collapsed and the militants launched major attacks on major cities in the country, Xinhua reported. According to the army, 570 terrorists have been killed since operation “Zarbe-Azb” began June 15. The army chief celebrated the Eid festival with the troops on the front lines and paid tributes to them for their courage, an army

statement said. “The chief of the army staff expressed his complete satisfaction over the achievements and progress of the operation made so far in North Waziristan,” it said. “We will not stop short of eradicating this menace of terrorism from across the country,” General Sharif said. He said the forces have cleared Miranshah, main town of North Waziristan, of the militants and also 70 percent purged Mirali, a main stronghold of the militants.

Afghan president’s cousin killed in bombing KABUL: Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s cousin Hashmat Khalil Karzai was killed on July 29 in a suicide bomb attack in southern Kandahar province, an official said. “The attacker was among visitors of the Eidul-Fitr festival. He made his way into Khalil Karzai’s house. He detonated explosives hidden in his turban after approaching Karzai,” the official told Xinhua. The blast occurred at 10.00 a.m.,

the official said. The exact number of casualties remained unknown, the official added. An investigation has been launched into the incident. Khalil Karzai was a winner in 2014 provincial council election. Khalil Karzai was also the campaign manager of Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai, a presidential candidate during the Presidential poll.

hooters and wrestlers put on a stunning show as India grabbed nine medals, including three gold medals, in what was their best show so far in the 2014 Commonwealth Games here on July 29. Till July 30 morning (IST), India had won 10 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals overall. On July 29, Sushil Kumar led the charge as Indian wrestlers winning three of the five gold medals on offer at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC). Amit Kumar and teenager Vinesh Phogat also bagged gold medals while Rajeev Tomar settled for the silver medal. The three gold medals also lifted India to fifth position in the medal’s standings. Trigger happy Indian shooters also had a gala outing as they brought home five more medals —

two silvers and three bronzes — from their respective events with the gold remaining elusive on the day. In total, Indian shooters have accounted for four golds, nine silvers and four bronzes from the Glasgow Games till now. The star of the day undoubtedly was two-time Olympic medallist Sushil, who just took 107 minutes to clinch the gold medal in the men’s 74kg freestyle category beating Pakistan’s Qamar Abbas in an

one-sided affair. It was Sushil’s first major international medal after his pet 66kg category was removed and he had to add nine kilograms to adjust in a new weight bracket. Sushil had won both his Olympic medals, bronze in Beijing and silver in London, 2010 World Championship gold, 2010 Asian Games gold and the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold in the 66kg category. It was the third gold for India

after Amit and Vinesh’s triumph in their respective categories. Amit won the gold medal in the men’s freestyle 57kg category beating Nigerian Ebikweminomo Welson. Amit won the bout 3-1 on classification points. Amit won six points in the two periods while Welson got two. Indian teenager Vinesh then made it a double delight as she registered a thrilling 11-8 win over England’s Yana Rattigan to clinch the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 48kg wrestling competition. On July 25, ace shooter Abhinav Bindra fired to glory to sign off from his final Commonwealth Games with a gold while teenager Malaika Goel shot a silver and lifter Santoshi Matsa snatched a bronze as India’s medals tally reached the double figure mark on day two of competition at the 2014 Glasgow Games here.

Indian hockey team loses 2-4 to Australia IANS, GLASGOW

T

he Sardar Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team gave a tough fight to reigning World Champions Australia in their third and penultimate Pool A match of the Commonwealth Games but eventually went down 2-4 here on July 29. It was Australia who scored the first goal in the 15th minute through a penalty corner strike from Chris Ciriello. Simon Orchard helped Australia extend the lead in the 17th minute when he made an excellent move on the counter-attack.

The four-time defending champions made it 3-0 in the 27th minute when Jacob Whetton scored a field goal. India then made sure they did not allow the attack to continue and eventually

found a penalty corner opportunity in the dying moments of the first half. Drag-flicker Rupinder Pal Singh did not disappoint and the 2010 edition silver medallists were off the mark. The second half saw India put up a much better show as they made inroads into the Australian half. The efforts finally resulted in a 49th minute field goal when Ramandeep Singh decreased the tally to 2-3. However, it was not going to be easy against the World No.1 team who came back to score off a penalty stroke in the very next minute to make it 4-2.

akistani model-actress Humaima Malick, who is making her Bollywood debut with forthcoming Emraan Hashmi starrer Raja Natwarlal, a thriller, seems to be in awe of the way Bollywood’s ‘serial kisser’ romances onscreen. She says he’s good at romance. “Emraan teases a lot. He bullies you a lot, but the good thing about him is that he is good at romance,” Humaima, who has shared some passionate kissing scenes with the actor in the film, said in an interview.

Further, praising Emraan’s professionalism and work, Humaima said: “He gives you your space (while working), doesn’t teach you. I have worked with lot of actors who give

MUMBAI: One of Bollywood’s most eligible bachelors, Salman Khan has admitted having a lady love in his life — his Kick co-star Jacqueline Fernandez. Recently, the superstar jokingly gave her his surname Khan, and made her blush when he revealed his admiration for her. While this is the first movie that two are doing together, they seem to have hit it off really well. They made a joint appearance to promote their film Kick on Zee TV’s India’s Best Cinestars Ki Khoj. Meanwhile, Kick has minted over `800 million in just three days despite being panned by the critics. “Salman Khan and Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kick’ collects (July 25) `264mn, (July 26) `271.5 mn and (July 27) `301.8 mn. `837.3 mn is phenomenal,” read a statement. Priyanka fought like a real ‘Kick’: Salman, Sajid kick up a storm boxer in ‘Mary Kom’ IANS, MUMBAI

ctor Priyanka Chopra fought with real boxers in the biopic Mary Kom, a biopic on the five time World Champion boxer. She says it was not easy to take a full-on punch from professional boxers during the shoot. “All my opponents in the film were real boxers,” Priyanka said in an interview. “It was very difficult to shoot with them because they are real boxers and they don’t know how to fake a punch, they had to really hit you. So I had to get hit a lot and that was really hard,” she added. Co-produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Mary Kom shows Kom’s journey from an athlete to a boxer, opposition faced by her father to take up the sport as a profession, her fearless nature and so-called end of her boxing career. Directed by Omung Kumar, it is slated for a September 5 release.

‘Kahaani’ to become ‘Deity’ in Hollywood MUMBAI: Here comes a new Kahaani for the Hollywood. YRF Entertainment, the international arm of Indian production giant Yash Raj Films announced that it will remake the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Sujoy Ghosh-directed and Vidya Balan-starrer Kahaani for international audiences as Deity. The remake will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fame, while Jose Rivera (The Motorcycle Diaries) and Richard Regen (Tehran), have scripted the adaptation. Deity is a thriller about an American woman who goes to Kolkata in search of her missing husband. As she gets closer to the truth, she finds herself at the centre of a dan-

gerous conspiracy. The story unfolds in the context of a colourful, week-long festival. The international movie will be financed and produced by YRF Entertainment, and starts production in February 2015. It will be shot on location in Kolkata. — IANS

Film: Kick; Cast: Salman Khan, Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Jacqueline Fernandez; Director: Sajid Nadiadwala; Rating: ****

K

ick toh banta hai, boss!” The number of times the word ‘kick’ kicks into this heady cocktail of comedy and action, you’d think there’s no word in the dictionary that gives our hero a greater kick than...well, kick. So, brace yourself for a hero who likes to get his kick in the unlikeliest ways. And a hero, who is as unpredictable, whimsical, mischievous and intimidating as Salman Khan. While writing his character in Kick, co-writers Chetan Bhagat, Rajat Arora and Sajid Nadiadwala had to consider Salman’s fan following carefully. This time Salman comes across as far stronger aggressive and in-your-face character than he did in his recent films like Bodyguard and Jai Ho. Salman sinks into the dual role of the prankster Devi and his Robin Hood doppelganger Devil with the smirky relish that only Salman knows how to muster and master. The superhero’s mask when it goes on is sure to bring the house down. ‘Debutant’ director (he handles the cast and characters and the plot like a veteran) Sajid Nadiadwala has set the core-action, a catand-mouse chase plan featuring the dare...um...Devil hero and a determined cop (Hooda, in command), in the striking ambience of Warsaw. It’s an exhilarating set-up. The stunts spiral splendidly into a climax. The stunts are admirably executed and are superior to what we saw in Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3.

Nadiadwala spares no expenses to ensure that his super-hero flick gets going from the first frame. The spectacle is never over-the-top. Playing the karmic crusader comes easily to Salman Khan who likes to see himself being...well... human in real and on screen. Cleverly, the plot weaves the superstar’s real and reel persona into a precocious pastiche where you never know where the reel Salman ends and where the fictional begins. The plot is designed as a flashback conversation between Jacqueline Fernandez and Randeep Hooda who could have been strangers in a train if only they were not engaged to get married. The mixture of the real and the reel gambols through a maze of confidently executed episodes. Not all of them work, though. The drunken buddy-buddy bonding sequence between Hooda and Salman falls flat as Hooda goes progressively over the top. Hooda is otherwise very much in control

over his character and plays off against Salman very effectively. Jacqueline Fernandez has bravely spoken her own Hindi lines. We will ignore her linguistic efforts and focus on how gorgeous she looks while dancing with and for Salman in Jumme ki raat. This film definitely marks her coming of age. However, the biggest hero besides Salman is Ayanka Bose’s cinematography which makes Salman, Warsaw, Mumbai and Jacqueline look fetching without resorting to accessorized illumination. The color tones in the frames are eye-catching without going the garish way. In his directorial debut Sajid Nadiadwala has opted for restrain where he could have unleashed a typhoon of spectacle. The film looks and feels right. Kick is super-slick but never in a ‘showoffy’ way. It is an out-and-out Salman vehicle but there’s room for other interesting characters. This Eid, go dance with the Devil. — Subhash K. Jha

It’s a story of a Muslim guy and Brahmin girl. It’s got nothing do with my personal life, but it’s a beautiful human story,” Kareena, who is married to Saif Ali Khan, told IANS. “I think it will be Salman’s career’s best film. It will have Salman in a completely different light altogether and it’s a very special film. It’s special because Salman Khan is producing himself and I am honored I am with him. I am lucky to work with all the Khans in all their home productions,” added the actor who was last seen in damp squib Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. To be made under Salman Khan Ventures, it will be released on Eid next year.

This sport event turned out to be a big festival of fun, food, live entertainment and sports. Despite uncertain weather in the morning, people not only from Chicagoland’s area but from Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin came in large numbers to enjoy this sports plus festival. In the evening, famous legendary Punjabi singer Gurdas Maan entertained the audience with his popular songs for more than 90 minutes. Some 5000 people attended the engaging day of sports, food, and live entertainment. Punjab Sports Chicago has been organizing International Kabaddi Tournament since 2003 when it was a World Cup and was held at this same venue at Boomers Stadium. This is their 12th ‘Kabaddi Mela’. The chief guests were, Dr. Ausaf Sayeed, Consul-general (CG) of India in Chicago, and Darshan Singh Dhaliwal. The Punjabi Cultural Society of Chicago (PCS.) is a non-profit organization promoting education, good citizenship, community development, civic commitment and involvement, and preserving Punjabi culture, language, sports and performing arts of the North Indian State of Punjab among its community members and also mainstream Americans in the Midwest and beyond. The PCS caters to this need both by directly organizing events that bring community

members together from all over the Midwest region and by facilitating participation of its community members in mainstream activities. PCS has a holistic approach to community building and its comprehensive programming encompasses a variety of aspects of community life and it’s needs. One of the biggest challenges facing any immigrant population and its subsequent generations is to preserve and promote their heritage to strengthen common bonds. The Punjabi community of Chicago area numbering about 10,000 is no different. As the community gradually grew in size in the early seventies, the volunteer efforts in these areas also increased. The like-minded ad-hoc groups working together since the early eighties were formally organized under the PCS, which was registered under its present name in Illinois State in 1993. It was later approved as a nonprofit corporation and all the board members and officials are dedicated volunteers without any compensation.

linching the remaining two Indian wickets in a jiffy, England bowled out India for 330— 239 runs behind — but chose not to enforce the follow-on on the fourth day of the third cricket Test at The Rose Bowl here on July 30 before lunch. James Anderson took both the wickets — Mahendra Singh Dhoni (50) and Mohammed Shami (5)— with India adding just seven runs to their overnight total in the brief morning session. England totalled 569 for seven declared in their first innings. On day 3, India found themselves in deep trouble, trailing England by 246 runs but but more importantly needing 47 more runs to avoid a follow-on with only two wickets in hand at the end of day three of the third Test at the The Rose Bowl here on July 29. At stumps, India were 323 for eight with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (50 batting) still battling, accompanied by Mohammed Shami unbeaten on four. Indian batsmen did manage to score 109 runs in 34 overs in the final session of the day but lost three crucial wickets, handing England the initiative again. Ajinkya Rahane, who had

No ‘Save Gaza’ wristbands for Moeen SOUTHAMPTON: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned England batsman Moeen Ali from wearing “Save Gaza” and “Free Palestine” wristbands for the remainder of the third Test against India at The Rose Bowl here. Moeen Ali, a devout Muslim had worn the wristbands on the first two days of the third Test but match referee David Boon reminded the Englishman of the ICC clothing and equipment regulations. The ICC issued the following statement Tuesday morning: “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match. Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that while

he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match.” The English cricket board had cleared Moeen to wear the bands.

Dharamsala to host West Indies for ODI DHARAMSALA: this picturesque Himalayan hill resort will host a match of India-West Indies One-Day International series in October-November, match organizers said on July 27. This will be the second ODI match at the venue. The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) is seeing it as a major achievement in showcasing its showpiece venue, located at an altitude of 4,000 feet above sea level, with the mighty snow-clad Dhauladhar ranges forming the backdrop.

“Another ODI, that too in a shortest span, is a big achievement. It’s now official that our infrastructure fulfils international norms,” Himachal Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) press secretary Mohit Sood told IANS. Sood said the Indian cricket board’s tour programme and fixtures committee chaired by Rajeev Shukla on July 26 selected Dharamsala as one of the venues for India-West Indies series. The other venues are Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Cuttack and Kochi.

James Anderson took three wickets at the end of Day 3 of the third Test against India.

ed Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo of Australia, in his rookie year on the F-1 circuit, won the Hungarian Grand Prix Sunday. He managed to slide by Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso (Spain) who finished second and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton (Britain) in the last 10 laps of the 70 lap circuit at Mogyorod, some 18 km from Budapest, Xinhua reported. Ricciardo won the Hungarian Grand Prix in one hour 53 minutes and 5.058 seconds. This win marks Ricciardo’s second win of the season, following the Canadian Grand Prix in June. ennis star Sania Mirza July 24 said she will “remain an Indian until the end”, after a politician attacked the Telangana government for naming her the state’s ambassador. “I am married to Shoaib Malik, who is from Pakistan. I am an Indian, who will remain an Indian until the end of my life,” Sania said in a statement here. She said she was hurt that prominent politicians and the media were wasting precious time “on a petty issue of my being appointed the brand ambassador of my state Telangana. “I sincerely believe that this precious time should be spent on solving the more urgent issues of our state and the country.” Mirza’s statement came a day after Telangana BJP leader K. Laxman accused the state government of picking Sania as its brand ambassador and giving her a grant in a bid to appease Muslims. Sania said she was born in India

and came to Hyderabad when she was three-weeks-old. She said her forefathers had lived in Hyderabad for more than a century. “My grandfather, Mohammed Zaffer Mirza, started his career as an engineer in Nizam’s Railways in Hyderabad in 1948 and died in his ancestral home in Hyderabad. “My great grandfather, Mohd Ahmed Mirza, was also born and raised in Hyderabad. He was chief engineer, Water Works, Hyderabad, and was responsible for constructing the famous Gandipet dam.

Indian nurses who survived Iraq look for jobs in Gulf SANU GEORGE, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

L

ess than four weeks after Sunni insurgents freed them in Iraq, the nurses who returned home after days of terror are already looking for new jobs in the West Asia. But none of the 46 women, including one from Tamil Nadu, wants to return to Iraq, a country now caught up in a mind-

less civil war that shows no signs of ending soon. J. Merena, who hails from Kottayam, is still busy going to various churches because she feels her safe return was made possible only by god. “My husband works in Qatar and our two small children study here. After this Iraqi ordeal, we have decided to live together,” Merena told IANS.

“So I am applying for a job in Qatar. If I go there with our children, we can live as a family.” Merena will soon join a course to write the qualifying examination for a nurse’s job in Qatar. Another nurse, Renu Balakrishnan, says the dreams she had when she took up work in Iraq remains unfulfilled — the desire to earn a lot more than what a nurse can get in India.

50 Indian fishermen held by Lanka Navy COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 50 Indian fishermen for illegal poaching in its waters, a navy official said on July 29. The official said that majority of the Indian fishermen were arrested off Point Pedro in northern Sri Lanka while the rest were arrested off Delft Islands, Xinhua reported. Seven boats used by the fishermen to enter Sri Lankan waters illegally were also seized. He said fishermen from India threatened to force their way into Sri Lankan waters next month as a mark of protest over frequent arrests of Indian fishermen.

TN school fire: Life term for owner CHENNAI: A court in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur on July 30 sentenced the owner of a school in Kumbakonam, where 94 children perished in a fire in 2004, to a life term in prison. Nine people were sentenced to varied terms in jail, while 11 others were acquitted. The eight school and government officials were jailed for five years and an engineer for two years. The judgment comes a decade after the accident at the Sri Krishna Middle School July 16, 2004, in which 18 other children were injured. According to the judgment, school owner Palanisamy was sentenced to a life term, and 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment. His wife Saraswathi was sentenced to a five-year term.

Goa minister says sorry for remark PANAJI: Goa’s Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza on July 28 apologized for his comment that India was already a Hindu nation. “My opinion could be wrong for others. I accept it. I don’t say it is the most correct opinion. Francis D’Souza You might say I am wrong. If anyone’s sentiment is hurt, I apologize,” D’Souza said. “Hindu is my culture, Christianity is my religion. When I say Hindu, it means culture and not religion. Hindu culture is 5,000 years old and my religion is 2,000 years old,” D’Souza said. D’Souza said had earlier said that: “India is a Hindu country. It is Hindustan. All Indians in Hindustan are Hindus, including me, I am a Christian Hindu.”

t’s time to bid goodbye to the tea-vending machines and the roadside tea-vendors. An Indian company has unveiled the world’s first automatic fresh-tea brewing machine, which uses only fresh ingredients, is economical and low-calorie in its output. Dlecta Food Pvt Ltd (DFPL), Mumbai, has developed the new technology and processes and has already filed for a global patent. “The existing tea vending machines merely dispense a premix tea comprising instant tea powder, sugar and powdered milk. The quality is often not up to the mark and the sugar content is as high as 62 percent, without scope for any modifications to cater to individual tates,” company Managing director Deepak Jain told IANS. ‘Indians are In contrast, the D’lecta Tea Brewcompulsive tea ing Unit (DTBU) drinkers. The company’s executive director, Devendra Garg, added that while coffee-making has seen huge automation and continuous technological advancements, the delicate and personalized tea-brewing has remained a manual process.

Well-educated wives no longer at divorce risk NEW YORK: Take heart and show some humility if your wife is more educated than you and earns better. With changing times, this may not drive your relationship to the dead end any more. A study finds that couples in which both individuals have equal levels of education are now less likely to divorce than those in which husbands have more education than their wives. “The study suggests new trends which are consistent with a shift away from a breadwinner—homemaker model of marriage toward a more egal-

itarian model of marriage in which women’s status is less threatening to men’s gender identity,” explained

parkling furniture makes for an impressive home. Make sure you use the right cleaning and maintenance methods for different kinds of furniture items. Indian online home store Fabfurnish.com has listed ways to ensure that everything from your dressers, tables, couches, chairs to bookcases look squeaky clean all year round: n Painted furniture: Painted furniture is the easiest to clean. On a weekly basis, dust or wipe it clean with a cloth dampened with water. Be sure not to leave water spots on the surface as they can leave permanent marks. Add an oil finish for the best possible protection. n Wooden furniture: Wooden furniture needs to be cleaned

with extra care. For everyday cleaning, use a soft and dry piece of cloth to dust such pieces. Special cleaning will involve the use of a lint-free cloth to polish the furniture on a regular basis. To avoid polish smudges, always use the same type of polish, oilbased or wax-based, throughout. Wipe in the direction of the grain of the wood whenever possible. When it is time to remove the built-up wax, use either mineral spirits or synthetic turpentine with a soft, lint-free cloth. Clean the entire piece of furniture with the polish and not just the area that’s soiled. n Leather furniture: Leather is one material that can crack easily so keep it away from heat or direct sunlight. Cleaning it is relatively easy if done regularly. Use a damp sponge or soft cloth and dust the furniture daily.

Christine R Schwartz, an associate professor of sociology at University of Wisconsin-Madison. According to the study, among U.S. couples who married between 2005 and 2009, more than 60 percent of those consisting of individuals with different levels of education featured a wife who was more educated than her husband — an increase from about 35 percent in the early 1950s. Among couples who married in the 1990s or later, a wife’s educational advantage over her husband was no longer associated with an increased risk of divorce. — IANS

ith the sun playing hide and seek and the rain gods surprising you with showers, it’s best to be prepared for the season by dressing up right. Take out your rolled sleeve tees and shorts and dance in the rain. Siddharth Munot, director and co-founder of Bewakoof.com, shares how to dress up casually for monsoon season: n Rolled sleeve tees and printed shorts will be a great combo to go with during rains. Go for bright colored shorts with black or white tees to make a style statement. n Team up printed round neck tees with rolled bottom denims. For the perfect rolled bottom denims, pinch in excess fabric along the seam, then fold up your hem. n You can also pair up printed sleeveless tees with a lightweight monsoon jacket and a rolled bottom shorts. Printed ganjis is also a good option. n Keep the heavy leather shoes away and swap them with flipflops, canvas shoes or loafers in fancy colors.
