Raman and her team based this trial on their earlier lab findings that showed this combination of medicines reduced muscle damage and preserved function in an animal model of DMD. In this trial, researchers enrolled 42 boys with DMD who also showed evidence of early heart muscle damage by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.

Defense on priority list Big boost for armed forces’ modernization with the allocation of `1.23 trillion/$19 billion; some gaps remain VISHNU MAKHIJANI, NEW DELHI

M

odernization of the armed forces got a whopping `1.23 trillion/$19 billion boost in the year just ending, but worrisome gaps — the failure to close a deal to replace a combat jet inducted in the 1960s and a crippling shortage of “fighting-rank” officers — remain. That the funding came in the first six months of the new BJP-led government was indicative of its determination to overcome almost a decade of sloth caused by A.K. Antony’s bid to keep his image “clean” while he was defense minister (till May). The funds were cleared by five meetings of the Defense Acquisiton Council — four chaired by

Arun Jaitley when he held additional charge of the ministry and one by Manohar Parrikar. The monies will go towards the purchase of six stealth submarines (`500 billion), “Spike” Israeli antitank guided missiles (`32 billion),

India has for long been working on a missile defence shield and this would get a further boost with the construction, under wraps at Visakhapatnam, of a stealth vessel armed with an Aegis type system. two midget submarines (`20.17 billion), 12 Dornier maritime reconnaissance aircraft (`1,8.50 billion), 363 BMP-II infantry combat vehicles (`1,8 bn), shipborne Russian Uran missiles (`1,4.36 bn), 1,768 railway wag-

F

rom a teenaged schoolboy who gave his life to stop a suicide bomber to the dozens of young boys and girls gunned down in their Peshawar school — children increasingly became terror targets in Pakistan, which continued to reel under attacks, political turmoil and natural catastrophes in 2014. But one youth who made news for the right reasons was feisty teenager Malala Yousufzai, who became the youngest recipient of

ons (`7.40 bn) and 1,761 vehiclemounted radio relay containers (`6.6 bn) crore, among others. Much of this, for instance the submarines and the Dorniers, will be made within the country and will majorly take forward Prime

the Nobel Peace Prize (awarded jointly with Indian rights activist Kailash Satyarthi). Terrorism continued to wreak havoc right from the year’s first day. Everyone was a target — pilgrims in Quetta, pro-government tribal elders in Khyber Agency, soldiers in Bannu, the general headquarters in Rawalpindi, polio vaccination teams in KhyberPakhtunkhwa, a court in Islamabad, the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, the flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah and finally Peshawar’s Army Public School.

Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign. Other positives during the year included raising the foreign direct investment (FDI) in the defense sector from 25 percent to 49 percent, the indigenous nuclear pow-

ered submarine INS Arihant heading out for sea trials, and beginning of series production of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft. Once INS Arihant is commissioned about two years from now, it would complete India’s nuclear triad of strategic bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). India has for long been working on a missile defense shield and this would get a further boost with the construction, under wraps at Visakhapatnam, of a stealth vessel armed with an Aegis type system that employs powerful computer and radar technology to track and guide weapons to destroy enemy targets. As for the combat jet, it was in 2012 that the Indian Air Force (IAF) zeroed in on French

aviation major Dasault’s Rafale after a six-aircraft competition for a $20 billion deal for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) to replace its Soviet-era MiG-21 jets that have been crashing with maddening regularity. The tender itself was floated in 2007 and the six aircraft shortlisted in 2010, but there has been concrete action only in the last two years due to protracted price negotiations and differences in calculating life-cycle costs and factoring in the cost of transferring technology. “It’s not just a case of depleting squadrons. The Rafale dates from the mid-1980s and even assuming the deal is clinched this year, by the time the last of the jets are inducted, the technology will be more than 40 years old,” said an officer involved in selection process.

A prominent victim was Karachi’s counter-terrorism chief Chaudhry Aslam Khan, killed in a blast on January 10. But in a case of rare bravery, 14-year-old Aitzaz Hasan — late for school in KhyberPakhtunwa’s Hangu — January 9 sacrificed his own life to stop a suicide bomber at the gate, saving hundreds of his schoolmates inside. The June 8 Karachi airport attack led to operation “Zarb-eAzb” in North Waziristan against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other terrorist groups. The TTP retaliated with the November 2 Wagah bombing, leaving at least 60 dead, and the December 16 Peshawar school massacre which left 141 dead, including 132 children aged 8 to 18, and thousands of students acutely traumatized. Termed “Pakistan’s 9/11”, it was the country’s worst-ever terror attack , surpassing the 2007 Karachi attack on Benazir Bhutto’s motorcade when 139 were killed.

J&K: PDP claims support of 55 MLAs Party president Mehbooba Mufti has not specified if BJP, with 25 legislators, is supporting her; PDP and BJP have 53 MLAs IANS, NEW DELHI

P

DP president Mehbooba Mufti told Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra on December 31 that her party had the support of 55 legislators in the 87-seat assembly to form a stable government. Mehbooba Mufti did not specify if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with 25 legislators, was supporting her but made a pointed laudatory reference to former prime minister and now ailing BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader met the governor for about 90 minutes at the Raj Bhavan in this winter capital, official sources told IANS. Mehbooba Mufti later told the media: “We have the support of 55 MLAs. It is our intention that a stable government is formed to

address the huge problems faced by the people in the state. “We want that the agenda of development and peace should be carried forward. We want Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s peace process (with Pakistan) to be carried to its

logical conclusion,” she added. She, however, did not specify if a PDP-BJP alliance will take office in the state although most pundits believe that will be the case. The PDP and BJP together command 53 legislators.

RANCHI: Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raghubar Das took oath here on December 28 as Jharkhand’s 10th chief minister, the first non-tribal to do so. The 60-year-old Das, who will head a two-party coalition, made it to the venue to wild cheering by thousands of supporters after offering prayers at a Hanuman temple and a Shani temple. But the crowds thronging the Morabadi football ground here were disappointed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi failed to make it to the event because he couldn’t take off from New Delhi due to bad weather. A thick fog in northern India also prevented BJP president Amit Shah, party veteran L.K. Advani and Home

Minister Rajnath Singh from making it to Ranchi. Governor Syed Ahmad administered the oath of office and secrecy to Das and four ministers - three from the BJP and one from the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU). This is first time a non-tribal will lead the government in Jharkhand. All previous nine chief ministers were tribals. A five-time legislator, Das was elected the BJP legislature party leader on December 26 after the BJP won 37 seats in the 81-member assembly. Das joined the BJP in 1980, the year it was formed following the break-up of the Janata Party. He has been the Jharkhand BJP president twice.

Amit Shah discharged Microsoft sues Indian tech company in Gujarat shootout case ARUL LOUIS, NEW YORK

MUMBAI: BJP president Amit Shah on December 30 got a major relief when a special CBI Court discharged him in the alleged staged shootout case related to Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife Kauserbi Sheikh and witness Tulsiram Prajapati in Gujarat. Central Bureau of Investigation Special Judge M.B. Gosavi ruled that there exists “no case” against Shah and that he (Shah) was implicated in the case for “political reasons”. “Amit A. Shah is discharged from the case,” the judge ruled, ordering the dropping of charges pertaining to murder, criminal conspiracy and other sections against the BJP chief in the cases dating back to 2005-2006. The judge said the CBI’s inference was not acceptable as there was no case against Shah when the entire records were considered in totality. He concurred with the contention of Shah’s counsel S.V. Raju that the BJP chief who was then Gujarat home minister — was falsely implicated in the case for political reasons. Sohrabuddin’s brother Rubabuddin Sheikh on

December 30 cried foul, and accused the CBI of being “sold out”. He said he would challenge the matter in the Bombay High Court. A CBI spokesperson said it would study the court order before taking further steps in the matter. The case dates back to November 2005 when Sohrabuddin, a small-time criminal and his wife Kauserbi, were allegedly picked up by the Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad when they were traveling from Hyderabad to Sangli in Maharashtra.

The film, which takes a swipe at godmen, also stars Anushka Sharma, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput. VHP and Bajrang Dal activists demonstrated at the Delite cinema in Old Delhi and at PVR Priya in south Delhi besides Kanpur, Bhopal and Bhubaneswar. At all places, the protesters tore up the film’s posters. The VHP said the screening was halted at the two theatres in the capital. The December 26, 2004, tsunami was triggered by a magnitude-9.1 earthquake — the region’s most powerful in 40 years, claiming over 238,000 lives in 14 countries

Catastrophe revisited MOHAMMED SHAFEEQ, HYDERABAD

T

he energy released by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 equaled 40,000 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs, according to eminent earth scientist Harsh Gupta. The massive undersea earthquake measuring 9.1 on Richter Scale, which triggered the worst-ever tsunami, caused 1,500 km long, 300 km wide and 20 meter vertical rupture. He revealed this while addressing a national workshop orgaSAEED NAQVI, NEW DELHI

oxing Day reminded me of December 26, 2004, the day the tsunami trampled Aceh in Indonesia, Galle and Trincomalee in Sri Lanka and devastated the east coast of India. An air force plane enabled me to be in Galle that fateful day. Captain Murlidharan Nair, Captain T. Asokan and a host of other naval officers from Kochi were holidaying on the high seas with their families when news of the tsunami reached them. Families returned home in smaller boats even as reinforcements arrived for the navy to advance with 37 ships to ports in the eye of the tsunami. Then something quite extraordinary happened. A giant U.S. warship docked a few meters at sea, visible from the Galle airport from where I was to be flown to New Delhi. The first passengers to disembark from the warship were two US cameramen. A speed boat brought them ashore where a high platform was in readiness for the cameramen to position themselves. Then came the marines with gear that would be impressive on film. Americans had arrived on relief duty with great fanfare.

nized by the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC) here to mark the 10th anniversary of the disaster. The tsunami claimed 238,000 lives in 14 countries. As many as 10,749 people were killed in India and 5,640 went missing. More than 1.5 million people were displaced in the affected countries. Gupta, former secretary of ministry of earth sciences, said it was a rare event which occurs once or twice a century. The experts at the workshop recalled that the disaster was a rude shock as most people had not even heard of tsuna-

mi. "We all watched on TV how the tragic events unfolded that Sunday," said another former secretary. P.S. Goel. They said everyone including institutes which monitor earthquakes were caught off guard. Gupta, who later played a key role in developing the tsunami early warning system, recalled the efforts taken in the aftermath of the horror. He pointed out that not every earthquake triggers tsunami. "Whenever an earthquake occurs through the ocean bottom and the rupture occurs in the sea bed creating a vertical displacement of the ocean bed and

the entire column of water above gets displaced; this column gets oscillate and moves out and it is called tsunami wave," he said. Gupta, an authority in seismology, said unlike the Pacific Ocean which is covered with geological features capable of generating tsunamis, there were just two such zones in the Indian Ocean One of them was the Andaman-Nicobar-Sumatra island arc. The scientist said the world had seen three great tsunamis: in 1755, 2004 and 2011. The first major tsunami occurred on November 1, 1755,

Indian Navy ignored during tsunami for want of media policy

Altogether 10,749 people were killed in India and 5,640 went missing. More than 1.5 million people were displaced.

Next morning’s newspapers were a shock. Across six columns of the Times of India was a photograph of the U.S. ship disgorging marines, engineers, grenadiers. The headline

in heavy font was: “American ship brings relief.” Not a word about the Indians. Here I was witness, yet again, to the triumph of propaganda over fact. Everybody in Sri

Lanka knew that Indian ships had arrived the day after the tsunami hit the coastline. In fact by the time the American ships arrived most of the required

caused by the Lisbon earthquake. The most damaging tsunami ever in the Atlantic ocean claimed 90,000 lives. As no major tsunami occurred till 2004, there was no awareness among people. He pointed out that those walking on the beach in Chennai on the morning of December 26, 2004 rushed to pick up pebbles and shells when water receded in the ocean. In no time high waves lashed the coast, washing them away. Gupta said the destruction was massive as the rule which prohibits any commercial activity in the 500 meter area along the coast relief had already been administered by the Indian Navy. It was a performance the nation could have been proud of. This was the sort of stuff prime ministers took special leave to inform their respective parliaments about. Sadly, no such notice was taken of the Indian Navy. In this instance there was a total disconnect between soldiers involved in the world’s most challenging expedition and the Defense Ministry. In fact the most well informed person in South Block was Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran who could tally the US version from Chanakyapuri and the Indian one from Colombo. Saran was at this stage managing another issue of some delicacy that the tsunami had thrown up. The first diplomat to visit him was the ambassador of Israel. He wanted permission for Israeli pilots to fly a plane to Nicobar Islands to rescue their citizens. What were they doing in Nicobar? Not only was there zero publicity for the extraordinary work done by the Indian Navy, but late comers like the Americans allowed their publicity departments to heap all the credit for the tsunami management on themselves, the Americans.

California-based attorney Shivbir Grewal and his wife, Preetinder Grewal, sold all of their Spectrum Pharmaceuticals shares last year after getting a non-public information from company officials who sought advice of Shivbir's law firm before announcing a significant decline in expected revenue, a litigation release by the commission said. The day after Grewals sold their stock, Spectrum issued a press release revealing the expectation of decreased sales of the drug Fusilev and the consequent expectation of reduced revenue. Spectrum's stock price fell more than 35 percent. Shivbir Grewal and his wife avoided losses of nearly $45,000 by selling ahead of the bad news. The Grewals agreed to pay $90,000 to settle the charges.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder in which the body lacks dystrophin, a protein that helps keep

muscle cells intact. It causes muscles to rapidly degenerate and weaken. DMD predominantly affects males. A majority of patients develop heart or respiratory failure, surviving into their 20s or early 30s. Narendra Modi clearly was the hero of Indian politics in 2014. He changed the BJP’s fortunes in a way that left its opponents gasping

When Modi magic upstaged Congress I IANS, NEW DELHI

t was a historic, memorable and momentous year for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. And it was a year the Congress would like to forget. After 10 long years in the opposition, the BJP took control of India, by forming the first government in 30 years with a parliamentary majority for any one party. And after the Lok Sabha battle left virtually all other parties in the dumps, the BJP went on to take power, again for the first time, in Haryana and Maharashtra, formed a government in Jharkhand and became the second largest party in Jammu and Kashmir. But activities of right-wing Hindu groups appear to cast a

shadow on Modi’s agenda of good governance. 2014 was phenomenal in many ways: India’s third longest-serving prime minister, Manmohan Singh, made a quiet exit after a decade at the helm; the Aam Aadmi Party quit power in Delhi in a decision its leader Arvind Kerjiwal later admitted was a mistake. But Modi clearly was the hero of Indian politics in 2014. The former Gujarat chief minister changed the BJP’s fortunes in a way that left its opponents gasping. When 2014 began, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance appeared weak but still seemed to have a chance in the general elections. But Modi, the BJP’s prime ministerial nominee, unleashed a revolution by harvesting the mass discontent over price

Telangana came into existence as India’s 29th state on June 2 following some dramatic developments during the passage of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill in parliament. While the backward region erupted in joy over a nearly sixdecade-long dream coming true, it was gloom in Andhra Pradesh for a brief period, but Telugu-speaking people finally reconciled to the

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill, approved by the union cabinet last December, was sent to the Andhra Pradesh legislature, which was asked to give its views by January 23. Reforms, inflation cheer Indian economy in 2014 but growth and deficits cause worry for the NDA government

Can Jaitly revive economy? HIGHLIGHTS OF INDIAN ECONOMY IN 2014:

ARVIND PADMANABHAN, NEW DELHI:

l Foreign equity norms eased in defense, insurance, railways, medical devices and realty l Railway fares hiked, diesel de-regulated l Campaigns like 'Make in India' and 'Digital India' launched l Economic growth improves but still below 5.5 percent l Stagnation of industry output continues but inflation at historic low l Key stock market index up 28 per-

D

espite a sharp drop in global crude oil prices and inflation easing to historic lows, the Indian economy’s performance in 2014 was not particularly comforting, as industry continued to struggle, fiscal and trade deficits widened, and the rupee came under renewed pressure. As per official data, the economy’s growth fell from 5.7 percent during the first quarter of this fiscal to 5.3 percent in the second with manufacturing output declining by 0.7 percent in a clear indication that revival of industry was nowhere on the horizon. The upside came mainly from a 9.6-percent growth in social services, 9.5 percent in the financial sector, 8.7 percent in utilities and 3.2-percent rise in farm output. The annual inflation based on wholesale price index at nil and retail index at 4.38 percent in November were also notable. The government, however, was certain that a 5.5 percent growth was possible this fiscal, as spelt out in the mid-term review of the economy, and that a seven to eight percent expansion was also reachable in the coming years. These apart, after years of perceived paralysis on the economic reforms front, the Narendra Modi government that took over the

reins in end-May started pursuing liberalization once again and took some key decisions, some of which have been pending for over a decade. To send the right signals to overseas investors, who were worried over measures like the levy of taxes with retrospect effect as in the case

of British global mobile telecom giant Vodafone, the government said it will no longer resort to such measures and have a transparent tax system. The heads of the three apex chambers — Ficci, CII and Assocham — told IANS that many of the initiatives led by Modi him-

self also made a major impact globally, notably the campaigns like Make in India, Clean India, ZeroDefect-Zero-Effect Manufacturing and Digital India. “The many decisions to hike railway fares, raise foreign investment limits in defense, realty, and insurance, attract overseas equity in railways and reforming fuel price regime have all helped to contribute to a renewed confidence,” said CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee. The government also promulgated ordinances to pave the way for the auction of coal blocks that had been cancelled by the Supreme Court, permit 49 percent foreign equity in insurance and ease the norms for overseas investments in medical devices. The fall in global crude prices was also something that came as a pleasant surprise for the consumers

and the government, falling from around $115 per barrel to around $58 now, helping the oil marketing companies to actually announce price cuts in transport fuels. As a result, pricing of diesel was once again de-regulated to allow oil marketing companies to fix their prices freely. Yet, government finances are far from comforting. There are indications that the fiscal deficit targeted for this fiscal year by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley may have already been breached. The signals from the markets were mixed. The benchmark 30-share sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange has risen by an impressive 28 percent so far in this calendar year, even as the rupee remained weak slipping from 61.75 to a dollar in January to around 63.88 now.

US labor market. But gold failed to rally as it was pricing in the QE (quantitative easing) taper and the eventual interest rate hike. That is why Currency Corner believes that all the bearish variables are priced into gold at current levels. The relationship between the US equity risk premium and gold also points towards gold headed higher. The US equity risk premi-

um (ERP) measures the difference between the expected rate of return on the S&P 500 and a risk free interest rate. As the premium declines, equities become a lowerrisk-higher-return investment, a combination which is typically problematic for gold. Historically, the beginning of a US Fed tightening cycle is always preceded by volatility in the financial markets. This column expects the same to happen this time around as well. We will witness another big sell-off in gold towards $1050 per ounce in the next couple of months — most likely, closer to the May-June Federal Open Market Committee meet. This would present a huge buying opportunity in gold especially if US wage and growth data in the following months fail to meet expectations. If the Fed sounds dovish after its first interest rate hike, the market would lose all faith in the central banks' forecasting ability as gauged by the “Fed dots”. In this scenario, one can expect a rally in gold prices to $1400 per ounce.

arket participants are yet again headed into a New Year with a bearish outlook on gold. This reflects the ongoing adjustments in the US interest rate cycle. It is the consensus view that the US Federal Reserve will start tightening monetary policy by June, which will push real interest rates higher and encourage further gains in the U.S. dollar even from current levels. The US Dollar Index is trading close to 90, a significant technical resistance. Moreover, according to Deutsche Bank, if we value gold in real terms, relative to income, rela-

SPECIAL REPORT

Mahi drops a bombshell Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni sent world cricket into a tizzy by announcing retirement from Test cricket, making way for talented Virat Kohli to take charge IANS, MELBOURNE/MUMBAI

M

S Dhoni, dubbed Captain Cool, brought his Test tenure to an end with immediate effect after India failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here, citing strain of playing all three formats of the game. Kohli, who captained the side in the first Test in Adelaide, will now lead India in the final Test in Sydney starting from January 6. Dhoni was in an upbeat mood when he faced the media after play despite the result, but he made no reference to his future in the game. Around 45 minutes after his press conference concluded, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement announcing his retirement, sending shockwaves in the cricket fraternity. What has irked most cricket puritans has been the timing of Dhoni’s retirement — in the middle of a Test series against Australia even though it is a lost cause. Kohli’s aggressiveness, sometimes bordering on brash and go for the kill attitude in Adelaide gave a glimpse into life beyond Dhoni. Former cricketers from all over the globe praised Kohli’s captaincy and how team India went for the win instead of being defensive and

just making the numbers. Dhoni’s sudden decision was surely swayed by Kohli’s performance in the first Test and with another overseas Test series defeat concluded, his stand probably became all the more easy. India’s most successful captain has had a torrid of late and has been criticized for his poor overseas record. Trailing 02 in the fourmatch Test series, the third match here on December 30 ended in a stalemate. India’s poor run in Tests overseas continued, prompting Dhoni, who guided India to most number of Test wins as captain (27), to quit the five-day format. In a statement issued in Mumbai by BCCI, secretary Sanjay Patel said the board respected the 33-yearold Dhoni’s decision and thanked him for his “enormous contribution to Tests cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India”. “M.S. Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats,” said BCCI.

QUOTE UNQUOTE “well done on a wonderful career in test cricket @msdhoni. Always enjoyed playing together. Next target 2015 WC my friend!!,” Sachin Tendulkar in a tweet. “MSDhoni’s retirement in midst of test series leaves lot of us perplexed! But that’s his prerogative.I’d like 2 wish MSD Happy Retirement!!,” Bishen Singh Bedi “A great competitor, and someone who I think Indian cricket owes a lot to,” former Australian captain Ricky Ponting wrote on Twitter.

‘26/11 biggest intel failure’ India, US, Britain had information about the attack: NYT report IANS, NEW DELHI

n one of the “most devastating near-misses in spycraft”, intelligence agencies of India, the US and Britain failed to stop the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack despite information from high-tech surveillance and other tools, The New York Times reported on December 22. The daily said it had pieced together the story from classified documents, court files and dozens of interviews with current and former Indian, British and American officials. According to the Times, 30year-old computer expert Zarrar Shah “roamed from outposts in the northern mountains of Pakistan to safe houses near the Arabian Sea in the fall of 2008, plotting mayhem in Mumbai”. The lead conspirators were alleged to be Shah, another Lashkare-Taiba (LeT) chief Sajid Mir and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, reported Pro Publica, which conducted the investigation along with the Times. WASHINGTON: The US has begun a new era in its relations with Cuba, which President Barack Obama began to work on after being elected to the White House in 2009, and could lead to official state visits between the leaders of both countries. White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said at a press conference on December 18 that a future visit by Cuban President Raul Castro to the White House could not be ruled out. Earlier, he had said that if there was an opportunity for Obama to visit Cuba, he would not turn it down. Late next month, Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson will lead a team of US officials to Cuba for talks on migration, which would be the first high-level mission to Cuba.

“We would... use the migration talks as an opportunity to begin to talk about some of the other things on our agenda,” Jacobson told reporters on December 18. On December 17, Obama and Castro announced a historic agreement to normalize bilateral relations after 53 years of hostility. Obama was looking to improve relations with Cuba since taking office in 2009 and last April he announced measures to remove certain restrictions on travel and remittances to Cuba. However, the arrest of US contractor Alan Gross in Havana in December 2009, and his imprisonment for subversive activities -- considered unjust by Washington -- turned into a huge setback to improving bilateral relations, Obama admitted on December 17.

Sony Pictures: hacked but not stirred Starring James Franco and Seth Rogen was screened at some 300 movie theaters around the US IANS, WASHINGTON

T

he comedy film, The Interview, which has been courting controversies for showing a fictitious US plot to assassinate the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, raked in around $1 million in ticket sales on December 25, a media report said. The film, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen was screened at some 300 independent movie theaters around the US after Sony Pictures Entertainment had cancelled the Christmas release of the film, following a hacking attack.

“We are extremely grateful to the people (of) the country, who came out to experience ‘The Interview’ on the first day of its unconventional release,” Rory Bruer, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s president of distribution, said Friday, according to the EFE news agency. According to a CNN report, North Korea issued a statement on its official news agency Saturday, denouncing Sony’s release of the movie. It called US President Barack Obama the “chief culprit”, who forced the production company to “indiscriminately distribute” the picture.

The hacking attack led to the theft of lot of Sony employee data, for which a group claimed responsibility. The statement attributed to the National Defence Commission also denounced the US for blaming North Korea for the hacking

attack on the moviemaker. “If the US is to persistently insist that the hacking attack was made by the DPRK (North Korea), the US should produce evidence without fail, though belatedly,” the statement, published by the KCNA said. The hacking attack on November 24 had led to the theft of extensive amount of Sony employee data, for which a group calling itself the “Guardians of Peace” had

claimed responsibility. Though the group did not mention the film at the time of the initial cyber attack on Sony, they subsequently warned of 9/11-type terror strikes on theatres showing The Interview. Sony had cancelled the release of the film on December 17 after major US theatre chains said they would not screen the film. The US government had alleged that North Korea was behind the cyber attack.

‘PK’ crosses `2 billion in India NEW DELHI: PK, a film that “stirs thought and discussion”, continues to perform well at the Indian box office. It has earned `2.14 billion so far. Featuring Aamir as an alien, the film takes a hard hitting swipe at organized religion, god and godmen. Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films, in association with Disney India, released PK on December 19 and since then it has been soaring high at the box office. PK collected `171.2 million on December 27, read a statement. It is doing phenomenally well in the international market too. The film also stars Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjay Dutt. Christmas and New Year season seems to have spelled magic for Aamir Khan’s latest release PK as the movie is doing phenomenally well not only in India but in the internation-

al market too. Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films, in association with Disney India, released PK on December 19 and since then it has been soaring high at the box office both in India and abroad. “PK has performed exceptionally well in India and many international markets, and with each day of its theatrical run, the movie is setting new benchmarks in many countries! Our distribution strategy ensured a wide availability for the movie across countries in all key centers. “The film has performed phenomenally well — and is now the highest grossing Hindi film ever in its first week in India, North America, Australia and many more... The occupancy rates in most theaters have been encouraging. We look forward to a long theatrical run for the movie!,” said Amrita Pandey, VP and Head of Marketing and Distribution, Studios, Disney India.

ctor Tina Desai is elated that her Hollywood project The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has been chosen to be screened at a gala for Britain’s Royal Family next year. The entire cast, including Dev Patel and Tina Desai, will be in attendance at the London gala on February 17. “It is fantastic to

know that the Royal Family liked the first part The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel enough to host the premiere of the sequel. I am deeply honored and ecstatic, and looking forward to meeting them and hope that they like the sequel as much,” Tina said. “It showcases the big fat Indian wedding and Indian culture, and the stellar cast has thrown themselves into it with an exuberance that the audience will

love,” she added. Directed by John Madden, the film also features Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Richard Gere and Lillete Dubey.

ugly. Do not look for redemptive escape routes in this film. Moving radically away from last week’s allis-well-in-the-world premise in PK, Ugly tells us what William Shakespeare did centuries ago. Human nature, by its very nature, is rotten and to the core. You cannot escape your basic nature of

self-serving greed. Everyone in Ugly craves for something more than what he or she has in life. Hence, the aforementioned wife Shalini trapped in a loveless marriage to a policeman, who is insensitive to her needs, reveals an ugly side to her personality with a suddenness that leaves us repelled.

nexpectedness is a given in Anurag Kashyap’s world of the dreadful and the damned. Ugly, his most sensitive film to date, comparable with perhaps That Girl In Yellow Boots, begins with Tejaswini Kolhapure making a stunning comeback after years of uncertainty, contemplating death. While Bollywood enthralled viewers by its offerings, actors too impressed the audience by donning diverse roles — from ostentatious to serious to comic. They took various roles and enhanced the movie-viewing experience

Striking gold at box office Best actors: Bang, bang Actresses who enjoyed performances of the year primacy this year 1. SHAHID KAPOOR: His role in Haider can be described as the best performance of his career. Shot in the Kashmir valley, the quintessential Vishal Bhardwaj directorial was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Apart from doing good business at the box office, the film was well received by critics, who were enamored by Shahid's work. 2. RANDEEP HOODA: Imtiaz Ali's Highway featured the off-beat pair of Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda. This however did not stop the film from making an impact on the audience. Mostly shot in the scenic locales of northern India, it presented Hooda as a goon who kidnaps the protagonist, and he breezed through his role. A classic example of Stockholm Syndrome, the film gathered much critical acclaim following its release in February. Apart from Highway, Hooda also appeared in a pivotal role in Salman Khan starrer Kick and he lived up to the expectation of his fans in the commercial drama. 3. NAWAZUDDIN SIDDIQUI: After giving extraordinary performances in the past years, Nawaz yet again exhibited his talent in Kick, a masala movie, and then wowed with his performance in indie movie Liar's Dice, which was India's official Oscar entry for the best foreign language film category. 4. RAJKUMMAR RAO: He played Vijay in Queen and Deepak Singh in CityLights and proved his versatility through the lucid roles. The former was a women centric drama and Rajkummar created the perfect contrast for the protagonist. CityLights, directed by Hansal Mehta, saw him in the much central and serious role. Centered on urban-rural migration, the film, an adaptation of a British movie Metro Manila, saw the actor giving his best. 5. SALMAN KHAN: Although the Bollywood superstar did not feature in any movie in 2013, Salman has had two releases this year, Jai Ho, which also stars Daisy Shah and Tabu, and Kick. While his performance has always allured the audience, his films have also ranked well at the box-office blockbusters list. Kick, which released ahead of Eid, crossed the `1-billion mark on the fifth day after its release. 6. HRITHIK ROSHAN: Although Hrithik's action-thriller Bang Bang! didn't appeal to the critics, the film did exceptionally well at the box-office, crossing `1.5 bn in India, and took the worldwide box office collection to close to `3 billion. The superficial action sequences and Hrithik's trademark dance catapulted the movie to the top of the charts. 7. AKSHAY KUMAR: With the comic Entertainment and action-thriller Holiday under his belt, Akshay entertained his fans thoroughly. He plays a soldier in A.R. Murugadoss's Holiday, which minted `1.03 bn in three weeks.

1. KANGNA RANAUT: Her heartfelt performance in the women-centric melodrama Queen earned her a lot of kudos from critics and viewers alike. The film turned out to be a success at the box office as it bagged `550 million despite its modest budget. She appeared in two other films this year — Revolver Rani and Ungli — both of which did not perform very well, but her performance was lauded. 2. Alia Bhatt: Her sheer frivolity in 2 States and her portrayal of a vibrant, free-spirited girl who develops an affectionate relationship with her kidnapper in Highway, has landed Alia amid a mound of praise. With three films this year, the actress made her presence felt in the cinematic world with Imtiaz Ali's Highway, which raked in `300 million. The 21-year-old also appeared in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, which received a lukewarm response. 3. Priyanka Chopra: The former Miss World and National Award winning talent showcased her versatile acting talent with Mary Kom, a biopic on Indian boxing champion MC Mary Kom. The film collected around `540 million and further secured Priyanka's place among top actresses in present-day tinsel town. 4. Rani Mukerji: Her personification of the aptly labelled Mardaani police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy, and her raw, unswerving and invincible rage against the child trafficking mafia attracted humungous praise from noted critics and movie-goers. Mardaani, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, was a low-budget film but it minted `400 million. 5. Deepika Padukone: The exuberant role that Deepika played in Happy New Year, which earned `1.88 billion at the box office, appealed to the audiences, who were also excited to see the Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika pair onscreen after they were last seen together in Chennai Express. Happy New Year is the flamboyant actor's third hit with SRK following Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express. 6. Shraddha Kapoor: After Aashiqui 2, which released in 2013, Ek Villain and Haider turned out to be great projects for Shraddha Kapoor this year. While Ek Villain collected over `960 million, Haider minted `500 million. 7. Anushka Sharma: With the release of Aamir Khan-starrer PK, it seems like she saved herself for the last, only to emerge as a promising wild-card entry to the bevy of actresses who dominated the year. Her pixie look in the film have received as much accolades as has Aamir’s ‘alien' character.

HICAGO, IL -- Beautiful strains of melodious carols, euphonic musical presentations, colorful dances, message-centric skits and inspiring sermons marked the spectacular Christmas Party organized by Willow Creek Community Church (WCCC) at 67 East Algonquin Road, South Barrington, IL. The attendees ranged from toddlers to seniors and were dressed in vibrant and colorful Indian attire. Despite adverse weather, over 4,750 joined the Christmas ceremony in the main auditorium and the 1,300-plus in IndianStyle Christmas Party after the service. The purpose was to organize the largest Indian Christmas celebration. This luminous festive event had a sizeable attendance of Christian families complemented by the presence of representatives from the Asian communities, thus making a grand interfaith and inter-denominational Christmas celebration. The Christmas extravaganza was the Indian-Style Christmas Party which was full of entertainment such as live traditional Indian Christmas music, dramatized presentation of the Christmas story, vibrant, authentic, and beautiful Indian dance performances, including Christmas Bhangra, Raas and Bharatanatyam. Other highlights were Christmas gift door/ prizes throughout the evening, a traditional

children’s Christmas Pageant, Mehendi, photo ops, children’s face painting, free Christmas gifts for all children, and all-you-can-eat Indian (and American) food. The first 300 ladies also received free stocking-stuffers provided by Salon Elite. Yeshu Jayanthi was marked by a colorful veena recital to celebrate the joyful evening. Saraswathi Ranganathan welcomed the 1,300-strong gathering to a soulful “What Child is this” along with Tony Karasek on Sitar, Dhananjay Kunte and Kalyan Pathak on Tabla. Saraswathi enthralled the crowd with foottapping rhythms of Holly Jolly Christmas, Feliz Navidad on the Veena with the skillful

Dhananjay raining beats on the tabla. Tony then wonderfully played ‘Oh Emmanuel’ on the Sitar with Kalyan ably accompanying on the tabla. Kalapadma Bharatanatyam Dance Academy presented a group dance for Christmas. Ministry of Bhangra performed Bhangra to Punjabi folk songs. “Willow Creek Community Church Christmas Celebration was one of the largest and unique because of all different languagespeaking Indians regardless of their religion attended and enjoyed Indian-Style Christmas Party. We are planning to come back next year.” said by Varghese Chacko.

HICAGO (IL) – The police are warning residents of two store robberies witnessed on the Northwest Side during the past two weeks. The two incidents occurred in the Belmont Gardens neighborhood last week and in the Logan Square neighborhood more recently. In the latest robbery, a Hispanic man entered a store in the 2100 block of North Hamlin Avenue around 7:06 pm, displayed a gun and demanded money. The man is 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 2 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, and 130 to 160 pounds. The man covered his face with a dark bandana and wore a black or blue hooded sweatshirt. The second incident happened around 5 pm in the nearby 4200 block of West Fullerton Avenue. A Hispanic man walked into the store in that block, implied that he had a weapon and demanded money. He is described as 25 to 30 years old, 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, and about 150 pounds. He wore a black hooded sweatshirt and covered his face with a red scarf.

St Louis Gujarati Samaj to help build Hindu Temple’s new community center Girls hide in closet as burglars

break into their home

S

T LOUIS, MO -- On the Christmas eve, Gujarati Samaj members and Hindu Temple of St. Louis witnessed the most awaited moment in the history of Gujarati Samaj of St. Louis. Just after two months of discussion, an agreement was signed between Gujarati Samaj and Hindu Temple. This agreement marks a major milestone in the journey towards keeping the light of cultural torch burning. The Samaj presented a check of $250,000 to the Temple to begin construction of the new building adjacent to the temple. After the prayers, the documents were formally signed and presented to Temple along with the token amount. The Samaj has also committed to help the temple raise additional funds and assured another $50,000 upon occupying the building. Both parties have signed a lease of 99 years. The community center will have a kitchen and large hall with stage and classrooms in 8000 to 10000 SF area. The Samaj will be able to host Navratri & other events at this community center. Bal Vihar of St. Louis is also part of this project. The new center is being built for other organizations within the community.

ANSAS CITY (MO) -- Two Kansas City girls received quite a scare when thieves broke into their house while they were home

Having a center next to the temple will also help the families to leverage the opportunity to instill more culture and faith in their children. The proposed Community Center will provide the following: A place to celebrate and teach the cultures, arts and traditions of India, a place to provide a platform for education and enrichment activities promoting Indian culture and Hindu traditions, 13 classrooms in the Community Center to support programs such as art, music,

yoga, and cooking classes and a place that creates a campus environment supporting various student interests and providing opportunities for leadership, development and personal growth. Also built will be a center to host larger community events to highlight the contributions made both politically and professionally in the St. Louis area and beyond, an expanded dining hall, a welcome area, and additional 250 parking spaces. alone. The girls, aged 9 and 13, said their parents had left the house when the crooks kicked in their rear door. When the girls heard the noise, they ran to their parent’s room and hid in the closet and as the crooks rummaged through the house, the older sister called 911. “When we were in the closet, I was praying,” said Rhea Akula, one of the sisters. “I made a bet that I would never fight with my sister again.” The thieves ran off as the police arrived but are still at large. The sisters said they often talked with their parents and had a plan if something bad happened.

HICAGO (IL) -- The Vedic Day Care Center, a pre-school and kindergarten, celebrated its annual Christmas function on December

The occasion was celebrated with many different performances by the children of the center who sang devotional songs, Christmas carols, and performed a drama about the birth of Christ. The children exchanged gifts among themselves which brought them joy. The celebration was joined by friends and family.

The finale of the day ended with a Christmas lunch. It was a day to celebrate with excitement and was enjoyed by all those who attended the program. Throughout the years, the Vedic Day Care Center, a well known educational institution of the Chicagoland area, has been celebrating different special occasions with great enthusiasm which brings enjoyment to the children. Director Vrashabha Das said he was grateful to Dr. Modi, Kal Patel, and Dr. Mehta for their financial support. Swati restaurant and Jay Hind restaurant provided the prasad, like in many functions in the past.

Director Vrashabha Das of the Vedic Day care Center made sure the kids had a memorable Christmas time.

ew Year’s Eve parties are some of the most stylish events of the year with many fashionistas taking this opportunity to redefine their personal style. Keeping this in mind, designer Sakshee Pradhan of the Schon label has styled some glitzy dresses that can give you a chance to stand out on such occasions. Starting from dresses, shoes, accessories, to make-up, the main idea of the party dress code is to look glamorous, feels Pradhan and her latest range of sequin dresses will live up to the expectations of many.

“New Year Eve is the most exciting evening of the night with full of energy and excitement to welcome the next year. So I’ve designed few sequins outfits to look our best during the celebrations,” the designer said in a statement. “Sequins can easily draw all attention on you as there is something about sequins that magically creates a new year full of glamour and happiness,” she added. Her collection includes sequin dresses, shorts and skirts that will add up the glam quotient in you. Let’s party hard this New Year in Schon’s creation that has been priced on request.

arly leaders Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor as well as Amitabh Bachchan, R. Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Hema Malini put up a real fight. But after thousands of votes were cast to help PETA India choose the winners, the results indicated Modi and Rekha to be on the top, said a PETA statement. “I’ve been a vegetarian for most of my life and can endorse the fact that it affects the way you think and perceive life”, Rekha said. temperature has been quite low in most tourist spots. General manager D.P. Bhatia of Clarke’s Hotel here said: “We are advising the tourists to travel to

Kufri and Narkanda if they want to enjoy snowy landscape.” Narkanda, the heart of the apple belt some 65 km from Shimla, has good accumulation of snow. Skiing is an added attraction there. Shimla saw the season’s first snowfall on December 13-14. It has snowy landscape in some patches, mostly in the Mount Jakhu hills, the highest peak of the town. Manali in Kullu district, about 250 km from here, which remained out of bounds for almost a week after the December 13 snowfall, is again a magnet for holidaymakers. “The current trend of tourist arrivals indicate that most hotels will again be packed to capacity before the next year dawns,” travel agent M.C. Thakur told IANS over phone.

f the plains of northern India are shivering and dense fog is spoiling New Year celebrations, head for the hills of Himachal Pradesh. There will be a lot of relief as the long sunny days have rendered the hills unusually warm. Members of the hospitality industry say it’s the prevailing bright sunny days that are attracting tourists, mainly from the plains, to the hills. They estimate that the tourist footfall is likely to

cross the 50,000-mark across the state to ring in the New Year. “As the sun is eluding the residents in the plains due to dense fog, a bright morning in the hills is an added attraction for tourists,” Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corp (HPTDC) general manager Yogesh Behl told IANS. Shimla’s meteorological director Manmohan Singh said the popular tourist destinations Shimla, Kasauli, Narkanda, Dharamsala, Palampur, Manali, Chamba and Dalhousie have been experiencing

sunny days for over a week and this would continue till the first week of January. He said the days were quite pleasant in the hills compared to the plains but the night
