2 am. Officials want to restrict the hours of operation for the city’s 154 liquor establishments that fall outside the designated hotspots in a continued effort to curb violence. “Some of the surrounding municipalities such as Passaic and Haledon close at 2 am.” said Andre Sayegh, 6th Ward councilman, briefly discussing the ordinance. The city’s bars and liquor stores are currently required to close at 3 am. Sayegh said the administration was attempting to bar trouble-makers from neighboring towns from coming to the city for an additional hour of revelry. Other council members didn’t buy the explanation. “Nobody gets out of a bar at 2 am and runs to Paterson for a halfhour,” asserted Julio Tavarez, 5th Ward councilman. Tavarez said bar-goers came to the city for its after-hours which rumbles through the night until 6 am or later. “The only ARUN KUMAR, WASHINGTON reason you’d come to Paterson at 2 am is

Otherwise, he said, this ordinance would result in exacerbating the issue. “This is the same thing as prohibition,” said Tavarez. He said early closing will simply open up an illegal option. “If we close earlier, the after-hours will open earlier,” concurred

Anthony Davis, 1st Ward councilman. The ordinance will not impact alcoholserving businesses already restricted to close at 12 midnight in hotspot locations. Out of the 197 alcoholic beverage licenses, 12 are pocket licenses (not being utilized at any locations), 31 operate in hotspot locations, and 154 are scattered throughout the city. “I see the fact that we’re open to three o’clock as a competitive advantage for our city,” said Tavarez. ecurity in the Asia-Pacific region must depend on international law and the peaceful resolution of disputes, not on “intimidation”, US President Barack Obama said on November 15 ahead of the G20 summit here, media reported. Addressing students in Brisbane, Obama emphasized that Asia’s security must be based on mutual alliances and big nations must not bully smaller ones, according to a BBC report. “We believe... that any effective security order for Asia must be based not on spheres of influence, coercion or intimidation, where big nations bully the small, but on alliances for mutual security, international law and... the peaceful resolution of disputes,” Obama was quoted as saying. He warned of the dangers posed by territorial disputes in the South China Sea, where Beijing’s perceived assertiveness has raised concern among its neighbors. Senate blocks reform to limit NSA spying WASHINGTON: The US Senate has blocked a move to put an end to the mass storage of telephone data by the National Security Agency (NSA), a measure that had the support of the White House and was a direct consequence of leaks by Edward Snowden. The controversial reform, called the USA Freedom Act, fell short by two votes of the required 60 to move forward on the Senate floor, with all the Republican caucus against it, except four senators, including Ted Cruz from Texas. A new rectified text incorporating those concerns reached the Senate this summer and obtained support from President Obama and leading technology companies, as well as the American Civil Liberties Union.

S President Barack Obama has ordered a review of the policies in place to respond to the kidnapping of US citizens abroad, the White House has confirmed. Obama on November 18 ordered the appropriate authorities — including the Defense and State Departments, the FBI and the intelligence community — to conduct a “comprehensive review of the US government policy on overseas terrorist-related hostage cases, with specific emphasis on examining family engagement, intelligence collection and diplomatic engagement policies”, National Security Council

spokesman Alistar Baskey said in a statement. The news of the policy review coincided with the report of Peter Kassig the murder of Peter Kassig, the third American to be beheaded by the Islamic State Sunni radical group. A video has been circulating online purporting to show members of the IS group beheading several Syrian soldiers and a US aid worker. The footage showed the beheading of a captured American aid worker Kassig.

‘Islam will prosper if we rule Kashmir’ Says BJP, adding that if people of the state want, the party will not press for the abrogation of article 370 of the constitution which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir IANS, SRINAGAR

T

he BJP said on November 19 it was confident Islam will prosper in Jammu and Kashmir if it got to rule the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also said that it won’t press for the abrogation of article 370 of the constitution, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, if people of the state want it to stay. IN BRIEF 2002 riots: Nanavati panel submits report AHMEDABAD: After 12 years and 24 extensions, the two-member Nanavati-Mehta Commission of Enquiry submitted its much-awaited final report on the 2002 Godhra train carnage and the subsequent communal riots, here on November 18. The commission submitted the report to Chief Minister Anandiben Patel at her residence. The report delved into the killing of 59 passengers in the ill-fated Sabarmati Express near Godhra station in 2002, followed by riots in many parts of Gujarat — killing 1169 people — ranked among the worst in India’s post-Independence history.

Adarsh scam: Plea to drop Chavan rejected MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has rejected a plea by the CBI to remove the name of former chief minister Ashok Chavan from the list of accused in the Adarsh Society scam case. Justice M.L. Tahiliyani gave the ruling on the revision application of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the agency’s earlier plea on the same was rejected by a Special CBI Court in January, said Ashish Mehta, a lawyer who had earlier represented the petitioner in the case. The ruling could prove to be a major setback to Chavan as he will have to face trial as an accused.

Arora, who is also in charge of the party’s Kashmir affairs, said Kashmiris would feel more secure if the BJP was voted to power in the country’s only Muslim-majority state. “Kashmiris need to vote en masse for the BJP. This contention is wrong that the BJP is a communal party. Kashmir is a land of Sufi saints. Islam will grow better during our regime,” he said. “The state as such has no religion but we (BJP) respect all religions and pledge religious freedom

to all as guaranteed in the Indian constitution. “Those who say the BJP would be a threat to Kashmiriyat ... are wrong. “The actual threat is to those who say so. Our party will end administrative, police, bureaucratic and political injustice in Jammu and Kashmir.” Trying to play down the controversy over article 370, Arora said

the BJP favored a debate and discussion on the issue. “We will take people into confidence and assess its merits and demerits to the state and proceed accordingly.” Arora said a debate over this provision was a “serious issue and we (BJP) won’t take any vague decision. “We will take the aspirations of all regions of Jammu and Kashmir into account while dealing with

this issue.” The BJP has traditionally opposed article 370, saying it was coming in the way of Jammu and Kashmir’s complete integration with the rest of India. The BJP manifesto for the 2014 Lok Sabha election reiterated its stand on the article and said it “will discuss this with all stakeholders and remains committed to (its) abrogation”.

DEFYING CONGRESS, OBAMA OVERHAULS IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

W

ashington, Nov 21 (IANS) Asserting his presidential a u t h o r i t y, a d e f i a n t President Barack Obama resorted to unilateral executive action to fix America’s broken immigration system and protect five million illegal immigrants, including thousands from India, from deportation. In a prime time address to the nation from the East Room of the White House Thursday night, he rejected accusations by opposition Republicans, who are set to gain control of both chambers of US Congress in January following their victory in November elections, that his action amounted to amnesty to undocumented immigrants. “Today our immigration system is broken and everybody knows it,” Obama said. “It’s been this way for decades and for decades we haven’t done much about it,” he said in justification of his unilateral action without the consent of Congress. “Amnesty is the immigration system we have today – millions of people who live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules while politicians use x issue to scare people and whip up the

votes at election time.” Obama argued that “mass amnesty would be unfair, but mass deportation

would be both impossible and contrary to our character”.

“What I’m describing is accountability – a commonsense, middle-ground approach: If you meet the criteria, you can come out of the shadows and get right with the law.”

Under his plan immigration, authorities will be asked to go after “felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a mom who’s working hard to provide for her kids,” Obama said. “We’ll prioritise, just like law enforcement does every day.” As he spoke, crowds of immigrants wearing winter coats and colourful caps rallied and cheered outside the White House in chilly weather with many holding placards reading: “Gracias Presidente Obama”. While 5.9 million Mexicans make up over half of an estimated 11.2 million unauthorised immigrants in the US, India is the fourth top source country with 450,000 living in the country without papers, according to a new Pew Research Centre report. About 8.1 million unauthorised immigrants make up 5.1 percent of the US labour force, the report said. Many of them are engaged in menial low paying jobs that Americans don’t want to do. Another step that would likely benefit Indians was his proposal to “make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates, and entrepreneurs

“Amnesty is the immigration system we have today – millions of people who live here without paying their taxes or playing by the rules while politicians use the issue to scare people and whip up votes at election time.” to stay and contribute to our economy, as so many business leaders have proposed”. With 168,367 H-1B visas, India cornered nearly two thirds of the total work permits for skilled workers in 2012. According to a White House fact sheet three critical elements of Obama’s executive actions are: cracking down on illegal immigration at the border, deporting felons, not families and accountability – criminal background checks and taxes. The President’s actions will also streamline legal immigration to boost US economy and will promote naturalisation for those who qualify, it said. Accusing Obama of stretching his powers as president, his conservative critics vowed to do whatever was necessary to stop his plan. Republican Mitch McConnell, who will become the Senate majority leader in January said Obama would regret choosing to ignore the will of the American people. “If President Obama acts in defiance of the people and imposes his will on the country, Congress will act,” he warned. As they mulled action ranging from censure to defunding Obama’s actions to impeachment, the Washington Post had a piece of advice for Republicans looking for revenge: “they have a ready way to take it. It’s called legislation.”

fter three years of decline, the number of Indian students at US campuses increased by six percent to 102,673 in the 2013-14 academic year, according to a new report on International Educational Exchange. The number of international students at colleges and universities in the US increased by eight percent to a record high of 886,052 students in the 2013-14 academic year, the 2014 Open Doors Report released on November 17 found. The overall number of international students in the US has grown by 72 percent since the first International Education Week briefing was held in 2000, it noted. There are five times as many Chinese students on US campuses as were reported in Open Doors 2000; almost two-and-a-half times as many Indian students; sevenand-a-half times as many Vietnamese students; and more than 10 times as many Saudi students. In 2013-14, there were 66,408

more international students enrolled in US higher education compared to the previous year. While students from China and Saudi Arabia together account for 73 percent of the growth, a wider range of countries contributed to the increase, with India, Brazil,

Iran and Kuwait together accounting for an additional 18 percent of growth, the report found. The number of Indian students increased by six percent to 102,673, reversing a three-year trend of declining numbers of Indian students at U.S. campuses.

The increase was driven by enrollment at the graduate level. Students from the top three places of origin — China, India, and South Korea — now represent approximately 50 percent of the total enrollment of international students in the US, with the num-

ber from China and India increasing, and the numbers from South Korea declining. There were increases in the number of students from 17 of the top 25 places of origin, including Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kuwait, Mexico, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Britain, Venezuela, and Vietnam. The report also found that more American students — a total of 289,408 — studied abroad. There were declines in the number of American students going to China, Australia, Argentina, India, Mexico, Ecuador, Israel, Chile, and New Zealand. The US hosts more of the world’s 4.5 million globally mobile college and university students than any other country in the world, with almost double the number hosted by Britain, the second leading host country, according to the report. International students’ spending in all 50 states contributed more than $27 billion to the US economy in 2013, according to the US Department of Commerce.

India, Oz agree on security cooperation CANBERRA: India and Australia marked a new synergy in bilateral relations as they agreed on a framework for security cooperation to boost defense, civil nuclear and economic ties even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended a hectic five-day, fourcity visit. The two countries signed five agreements, including one on exchange of sentenced prisoners, while Modi also addressed the Australian parliament. On November 18, Modi spoke in English — to the media in Canberra after talks with his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott, in parliament, while addressing business honchos in Melbourne.

IANS, SYDNEY

n a replay of the crowd and the euphoria at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was Monday cheered lustily by an over 16,000-strong gathering of the Indian diaspora at Sydney’s Allphones Arena, where he promised to fulfill their expectations of a resurgent India. Modi, who arrived from Brisbane earlier in the day after attending the G20 summit meeting, spoke for an hour at the Allphones Arena where people wore T-shirts with Modi photos emblazoned on them. Hundreds of fans had arrived by the “Modi Express” train from Melbourne in the morning. To deafening chants of “Modi, Modi” interrupting his speech, the prime minister, attired in a white kurta pyjama with a blue sleeveless jacket to match, also promised the diaspora visa on arrival and merging of the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cards by January. Speaking in Hindi, Modi said there was no reason for India to lag behind any longer. “Do you believe that the country can rise again, become powerful and capable of helping other countries again,” he asked to loud cheers from the crowd. “I don’t see any reason for the country to remain behind, fate has decided that it must progress,” he said to wild cheers. Organizers of the event had said Modi’s address at the Allphones Arena would rival the Madison Square Garden address on September 27 where too he had received an ecstatic

welcome from an over 16,000-strong gathering of Indian diaspora. “Overwhelmed, honored and humbled. Will never forget this day,” is how Modi tweeted later. Modi also spoke of the schemes launched by his government, including the Clean India and Make in India programs, and invited the diaspora to join in the Swachh Bharat campaign and contribute towards building toilets in their villages back home in India. He said that today, people, including industrialists, are participating in the Clean India mission. “I salute them.” He said that on the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 2019, “the least we can do for Mahatma Gandhi is have a clean India”. Modi said it would give a fillip to tourism in the country, besides improving the lives of the poor. “It took 28 years for an Indian PM to make the few hours journey to Australia. Now you will not have to wait 28 years,” he said, referring to the shared values of democracy, and the love for cricket that India and Australia share. Earlier, during his meeting with businesspersons in Queensland, Modi told them that Queensland can be an important partner in India’s development. At the breakfast meet hosted by Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, Modi proposed that businesspersons can participate in his government’s Clean Ganga program and also suggested that India can import LNG from Queensland. He said he was pleased that Queensland will be participating in ‘Vibrant Gujarat’ summit in 2015 to showcase its infrastructure.

Modi later tweeted that he was “touched by enthusiasm of the Indian community!” and posted a picture of the venue where the statue was unveiled.

“Mahatma Gandhi is as relevant today as he was in his lifetime,” Modi said at the function, beginning his bilateral engagements in Australia after the conclusion of the G20 summit. He noted how the organizer of the event, Hemant Nayak, recalled that Modi was keen on having the statue installed even from the days when he had not yet become the chief minister of Gujarat. He thanked Nayak for correcting the perception that some people had, that he had begun to mention Mahatma Gandhi only after becoming prime

good fortune of unveiling it, and he considered this moment to be no less than a divine message. Addressing a gathering of the Indian-Australian community at the venue, the prime minister said, “On October 2 (1869), a person was not born in Porbandar, but an era was born”, referring to the Mahatma. He referred to the problems of global warming and terrorism that had been discussed in the just-concluded G20 summit at Brisbane, and said Gandhi’s life gives us the answers. “When Mahatma Gandhi stayed at Sabarmati Ashram, the river was full of water. Yet even (during) that time, he scolded people for wasting water. “Mahatma Gandhi always showed us that we have no right to do exploit nature,” he said.

Making his moves pretty fast, Carlsen made it clear that he was well prepared in this line. "Carlsen played one of the rare lines in the main line with the move Re8 on his 9th move," Indian Grandmaster P. Harikrishna told IANS.

Difficult to get into rhythm in Abu Dhabi: Nico Hulkenburg

The committee, which marked Srinivasan as “Individual 13” in its report, said in its conclusions: “This individual (Srinivasan) is not involved with match-fixing activity.”

“This individual (Srinivasan) along with four other BCCI officials was aware of the violation of the Players’ Code of Conduct by individual 3, but no action was taken against individual 3 by any of the aforesaid officials who were aware of this infraction,” the report said in its conclusion about the BCCI president. Dealing with IPL CEO Sunder

Raman, who was marked as individual 12 in the report, the report said: “This individual also accepted that he had received information about individual 1 (Meiyappan) and individual 11 (Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra) taking part in betting activities but was informed by the ICC-ACSU chief that this was not actionable information.”

ABU DHABI: Force India driver Nico Hulkenburg on November 17 said, ahead of this weekend’s Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, that the Yas Marina Circuit here is a difficult track to get into rhythm as it has long straights followed by tight corners. “Abu Dhabi is a nice venue. The

racing looks really cool on TV as the day turns into night and the track is pretty challenging for us in the car as well. The light is not really an issue once you are in the cockpit but the layout makes it very easy to make mistakes and lose time, especially in qualifying,” Hulkenburg, who earned four points at last weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, said. Going into the season-ending race, Hulkenburg has 80 points and is now ninth in the drivers’ standings. “It was nice to be back on the pace in Brazil and hopefully we will have similar pace in Abu Dhabi. It has been a great year for everyone in the team.”

A couple of failures will not Saina, Srikanth clinch stop my cricket: Rohit China Open titles IANS, KOLKATA

G

etting a boost after his world record 264 against Sri Lanka in an ODI here, Indian opener Rohit Sharma said a couple of failures would not stop his cricket. The 27-yearold, who made his ODI debut for India in 2007, has been in and out of the team as he failed to maintain consistency. In the past, he has often struggled in the middle. However, after his swashbuckling display, Sharma was brimming with confidence. "You have to accept the failure and success and you keep moving on. That's what I've done. A couple of overseas failures will not stop my cricket. My cricket and my

hard work will still remain on the track. I will keep working as hard as ever." Sharma said as a youngster, he never expected to play such an innings or smash records. "All the records happen along the way. I probably need to work harder, and from here on the expectation would be more. I feel I have a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders," said Sharma, after becoming the highest ODI scorer in an innings. Meanwhile, skipper Virat Kohli led from the front with a smashing unbeaten century to guide his team to a three-wicket win in the fifth and final ODI in Ranchi, clean-sweeping the series 5-0.

FUZHOU (CHINA)/NEW DELHI: Leading Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal clinched the women’s singles crown of the $700,000 China Open Super Series Premier but compatriot Kidambi Srikanth grabbed all the headlines by pulling off the biggest upset of his career when he beat two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan to win the men’s singles title in Fuzhou on November 16. While sixth seeded Saina won her second Super Series title of 2014 by overcoming Japanese Akane Yamaguchi 21-12, 22-20 in 42 minutes, Srikanth stunned the five-time World Champion Chinese 21-19, 21-17 in 46 minutes at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center. Srikanth on the eve of the summit clash said that it was his childhood dream to play ‘Super’ Dan in a final, that too in his own backyard. He not only fulfilled his dream but went one step better by ousting the legendary Chinese in straight

games to earn his first win in three outings against Dan. Srikanth, ranked No.16 in the world, took off well and fast by going into a 9-4 lead in the first game. However, Dan, in his usual style, took time to get into his rhythm to close the gap at 15-all. The 21-year-old Hyderabadi, just like the first game, came out with his best strokes just when it mattered most to clinch six of the next eight points and earn the biggest win of his career. “Great wins! It is fantastic for both of them and Indian badminton. For Srikanth, it was a big match and at the end of it he kept his nerve to earn the big win. Overall, he has played some high level badminton,” said chief national coach Pullela Gopichand.

Sixth seeded Saina Nehwal won her second Super Series title of 2014 by overcoming Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.

Kim Kardashian to visit India MUMBAI: American reality TV star Kim Kardashian is going to enter Bigg Boss 8 on her maiden trip to India. The 34year-old will be seen in the Bigg Boss house on November 22 as a guest to interact with the contestants including Karishma Tanna, Diandra Soares, Gautam Gulati and Upen Patel. Kim is excited to visit India and her stay in the Bigg Boss house. She said in a statement: “Namaste India (Hello India) main Kim Kardashian aa rahi hoon India (I, Kim Kardashian am coming to India) Bigg Boss ke ghar mein (at the Bigg Boss’s house)”. The Colors show is hosted by Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Andre Timmins, director of Wizcraft International Entertainment said: “It gives us great pleasure to welcome and facilitate Kim Kardashian’s maiden visit to India.” “Just touched down in Australia!!! My perfume world tour begins for my new fragrance Fleur Fatale! Next stop India then Dubai! All in 1 week!” she tweeted on November 16. If one goes by reports, she will make an appearance on Salman Khan-hosted reality show Bigg Boss 8. Kim is not accompanied by her daughter North West, whom she had with husband Kanye West last year. And the star mother is missing her little one. “Missing my baby girl so bad already! Was going to bring her but 3 countries in a week is too much travelling. Daddy time will be much better,” she shared on Twitter.

TV should come in seasons: Mona Singh

MUMBAI: Actor Mona Singh, who is currently busy promoting her next film Zed Plus, says television shows should come in seasons as watching daily soaps gets boring. The actress agrees that small screen is growing immensely but according to her, there should be some changes in the format to maintain freshness. “TV is growing big time now. TV serials are changing and change is necessary. It’s good as I have always believed that TV should come in seasons because daily soaps everyday gets boring,” she told IANS. “I mean how much newness can you get in 50 episodes. It looks boring and monotonous.”

Katrina Kaif to miss her X-mas vacation this year MUMBAI: Katrina Kaif usually takes time off around Christmas. Last year, she had reportedly spent the holiday season in New York with her alleged boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor. The year before that, she had reportedly gone to London to meet her family. However, this year, Katrina might end up spending Christmas working in Mumbai, as she will be busy shooting for director Anurag Basu’s film Jagga Jasoos. “She has just finished the second schedule of Anurag’s film, and is currently shooting for Abhishek Kapoor’s next. By December, she will have to resume work on Anurag’s movie,” says a source close to the actor. She will be seen opposite Ranbir in Anurag’s sleuth film. This year, too, for Christmas, Katrina had planned to visit her mother in London. But going by her date diary, she will not be able to leave the city. “She does not want the film to suffer for her personal reasons, so she will take a call as soon as she finishes shooting for Abhishek’s film,” adds the source.

If god is willing, I will serve people: Rajinikanth CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth Sunday hinted that he’s ready to serve people provided he gets the green signal from the almighty. Speaking at the audio launch of Tamil actioner Lingaa, Rajinikanth told reporters: “Everybody wants me to join politics. I’m aware of its depth and danger. I’m not afraid, but just a little hesitant. It’s not in my hands. If god is willing, I will serve people.” “I think doing films with a social message is also some kind of service to society. Making films and entering politics is easy, but emerging victorious is tough in both,” he added. The superstar wanted director K.S. Ravi Kumar to complete Lingaa in six months. “The only person capable of finishing the film in less than six months was Ravi Kumar. I’m happy he did it,” he said. He also added that Ravi Kumar looked after him like a child. He was touched by the love of the film’s crew. “Lingaa”, slated for a Dec 12 release, comes after the failure of Rajinikanth’s “Kochadaiyaan”, an animated film directed by his daughter Soundarya. “We lost some money through ‘Kochadaiiyaan’, but I learnt a lot from the experience,” said Rajinikanth.

FILM REVIEW | TELUGU

‘Thirudan Police’- the wonders comedy can do

L

ately, it’s almost impossible to find a Tamil film without comedy. Even if someone makes a full length action film, you’re forced to laugh at a few places for reasons even the filmmaker can’t explain. But not all filmmakers succeed in using comedy to their strength, but there are exceptions like Nalan Kumarasamy, Karthik Subbaraj, who know exactly how to use it in their films without diluting the core subject. Debutant Caarthick Raju deserves to be included that list for

Film: “Thirudan Police”; Cast: Dinesh, Iyshwarya Rajesh, Rajesh, Rajendran, John Vijay, Bala Saravanan, Nithin Satya, Naren; Director: Caarthick Raju; Rating: ***1/2 proving how comedy when used the way it’s supposed to be used can make a lot of difference to the story. Caarthick’s Thirudan Police is the story about a father (a police constable) and son (Vishwa, a wastrel), their relationship, whose importance the latter only realizes

quite late in life. It’s also a thriller, about the hunt for the killer of the father, who gets killed while on duty. When Vishwa slips into the shoes of his father, literally, after he’s given his job, he starts missing him and realizes all that he did for the family. In another beautiful scene, the hero’s friend, who is tired of listening to him yap about his dead father, asks him why he only talks about his dad at night and never during the day. Vishwa, innocently, replies that he’s seen his father come home usually at night.

I don’t want film on me:

Sania Mirza India’s ace tennis star says she doesn’t want to share the details of her life for a biopic on the big screen IANS, NEW DELHI

A

t a time when Bollywood is making biopics on sports personalities, tennis star Sania Mirza says she doesn’t want her life to be seen on the big screen as she is a private person in real life. Sania doesn’t want to share the details of her life for a biopic but says that if anything along the lines of her biopic would happen in the future, she’d like Deepika Padukone to play her role. “I’m a private person. I don’t want a film to be made on me because I don’t want to share my intimate details. I’m not that kind of a person, and I have got offers for a biopic previously but I have said no,” she said on the sidelines of the National Children’s Film Festival (NCFF), organized by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI). “But if someone puts me on the spot and I have to choose, then I would want Deepika Padukone to play my role,” she added. Sania, who turned 28 on November 15, is also writing an autobiography which is being edited as of now and the tentative title is Against All Odds.

I am not in a hurry to work with Kareena: Saif IANS, MUMBAI

A

ctor Saif Ali Khan, who has roped in his wife Kareena Kapoor to do a cameo in his next film Happy Ending, says he is in no hurry to work with the actress. “I am not in a hurry to work with her. It would be a rare man who would like to work every time with his wife. It would be nice for me to work in a different world and then come home to meet her,” Saif Ali Khan told reporters in a group interview.

Need support for ‘Liar’s Dice’: Nawazuddin Siddiqui NEW DELHI: Film Liar’s Dice starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui is India’s official Oscar entry for the best foreign language film category but the actor says the filmmakers don’t have funds to screen the movie at the academy awards on a very grand scale.

“The movie is a small budget movie. We need to screen the movie on a big scale there, but we don’t have the money and are searching for support,” said the actor, who was in the national capital for an event recently. The film revolves around Kamala who lives in the remote village of Chitkul on the Kinnaur-Tibet border and sets off on a journey with her three-year-old daughter and a pet goat to find her husband.

A star-studded wedding for Salman Khan’s sister HYDERABAD: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan's sister Arpita Khan tied the knot with businessman Aayush Sharma on a star-studded on November 18 evening at the Taj Falaknuma hotel here. The celebrations, which kicked off with the 'baraat' at 4.30 p.m., continued till late in the night at the heritage hotel located in the old city area. The 'baraat' included horses and two bands, one from Delhi and one from Hyderabad. It was followed by the 'jaimala' and 'phere'. The wedding rituals were performed as per Punjabi Hindu traditions. Salman's father Salim Khan, mother Salma, brothers Arbaaz, Sohail and other family members received the baraat and blessed the

couple, who exchanged garlands. The rituals were followed by a party, where Salman, his step-mother Helen, sister-in-law Malaika Arora Khan performed to some popular numbers. Punjabi singers Mika and Yo Yo Honey Singh livened up the party. Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif and Karan Johar were among top stars from Bollywood who attended the marriage. It was not clear as to which other leading stars attended the wedding as a thick security blanket was thrown around the hotel and the media was barred from the venue. While police were managing the outer security ring, the actor's personal guards and others were keeping a tight vigil inside the hotel.

‘Kill Dil’ — insipid guns-and-romance curry Film: “Kill Dil”; Cast: Govinda, Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra; Director: Shaad Ali; Rating: **1/2

K

ill Dil is one of those misfired gun shots of masala cinema that reads like a fun fest on paper. I am sure everyone must have ROFL (Ranveer’s semi-illiterate character doesn’t know what ROFL means, teehee) while shooting and enacting the scenes and even before that there must have loads of laughter while reading the script. In principle these unprincipled characters who live and die by the gun must have seemed interesting. On screen Kill Dil is as flat as the midriff that Ranveer loves to flaunt whenever the script permits. Not that the script here is too particular about what goes and what doesn’t. This is a free-for-all guns-andromance spree where Gulzar Saab’s poetry slyly meets Ranveer Singh’s buffoonery. Half-way down the narration you realize director Shaad Ali has run out of designer-cool tricks. Enough of those chic shots of our two heroes riding down busy highways gunning for unsuspecting victims. Yes, our heroes Dev and Tutu are assassins. You could’ve fooled me! They look like a couple of petty pickpockets. But God and the screen writers(three of them, actually....what’s that they say about

This is a free- for- all guns- and- romance spree where Gulzar Saab’s poetry meets Ranveer’s buffoonery. Director Ali has run out of cool tricks. too many crooks....sorry, cooks?) have loftier plans for our heroes who eat, laugh, cry and kill together. But never sleep together. The heroes are assigned boarding school double-decker beds, just so that we don’t get any homosexual

ideas. This is Jai and Veeru from Sholay without Jai clambering on Veeru’s shoulder on the motorbike. They sing together but the lyrics are about assassination and jubilation. Yash Raj films had gone into a similar turbulent territory of dosti versus love in the recent Gunday. Ranveer who played one of the two buddies in the earlier film as well, is far more entertaining here. He’s still way over the top. But here he is hammy in a pleasant way. Trouble starts and the killings for him end when Ranveer’s character Dev falls in love with the neighborhood femme fatale.

XNARD (CA) – The police in Oxnard, Calif., are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 55-year-old Indian American man on November 13 morning as he was dropping his son off to elementary school. Labh Nigah Singh was found dead at a park adjacent to Sierra Linda Elementary School in Oxnard, a city in Southern California. Doctors said the long-time resident of Oxnard had suffered multiple stab wounds and was dead at the scene. Nigah leaves behind his wife, Jaswinder Kaur, and three children. A funeral and memorial service will be held on November 29 at the Ventura, Calif., gurdwara on Loma Vista Road. Nigah was found on the ground about 50 feet away from the school. Witnesses have told the police that they saw a suspect fleeing from the scene. His body was released to family members on November 18. Nigah, a store clerk at a 7-11, was well-known to the police, who would stop by the store for a cup of coffee and a chat. He worked seven days a week, often at night, to provide a good life for his wife and kids. “He was a family man living the

American dream,” he said. According to Oxnard resident Veronica Perez, she knew Nigah since she was eight years old. Perez, now 38, said she and her friends would frequently stop by the store; Nigah would always greet them with a smile and a chat. Later, as Perez became the caretaker to her ailing father, she would stop by the store to get her dad’s favorite: plain hot dogs, minus the trimmings. Nigah would always ask about her dad and children. “We didn’t lose a 7-11 clerk; we lost a friend,” said Perez emotionally, adding that she could not understand why anyone would want to kill the friendly clerk. “There was no one I know who had anything against him.” Nigah’s daughter, Harleen Kaur, has created a fund-raising Web page.

KUCHIPUDI DANCE BALLET DEPICTS SAGA OF LORD KRISHNA BY A STAFF WRITER

D

ALL AS ( T X) -- It was a celebration of the fifth anniversary of Echoes of India, a non-profit organization dedicated to the service of rural India in collaboration with the Natyanjali School of Dance in Dallas metroplex, at Granville Arts Center, Garland, Texas on the November 15. The celebration was memorable, enchanting, and mesmerizing and consisted of a Kuchipudi dance ballet, Sri Krishna Sharanam Mama, a story of Lord Krishna, and performed by 90-odd student artists of Natyanjali trained under the admirable tutelage of Srilatha Suri, the artistic director of the school. The participants ranged from a very tender age of 4 or 5 years to almost adult age to fit the various roles of the play, from baby boy Krishna to Vasudeva, Gopikas, and Kansa, etc. Parts of the dance drama were adopted from Guru Padmasri Sobha Naidu’s original choreography Srikrishna sharanam mama. As the event was the celebration of the fifth anniversary of the Echoes of India, a short presentation about its services followed before the main dance. It was a short movie depicting a successful installation of 11 reverse osmosis (RO) water plants benefitting almost 60,000 villagers in Nalgonda district, and establishment of the Kuchipudi rural clinic serving daily 20-30 villagers. The presentation also included a list of

donors and sponsors who have helped thus far. The dance drama took the audience from Garland, Texas to Gokulam and Brindavan, from birth to the romantic and playful acts of Krishna with Gopikas and Gopa Balas and the rasa kreedas with his wives, with Sreeragini as Narada playing the impressive Kalaha Priya role. Pallavi shah and Dr Rajesh Adusimili played the roles of Devaki and Vasudeva very well. Gopikas and Gopa Balas did their

excellent reverberating performances with their childhood plays with young naughty Krishna played by Manasvik and Amiya c. Srilatha Suri as Yashoda won the hearts of many with her ease in abhinaya. Kaliya by Priyanka mesmerized the audience while Vatsalya as Tandava Krishna danced with grace. Spruha and Samhita as Krishnas in rasakreeda played the Krishna roles with dignity, and Pranhuti Suri as Radha Satyabhama stole the limelight by playing two different roles but fitting the character perfectly showcasing her experience and talent.

The special effects of moonlight, waterfalls, etc made it very natural and realistic. The unique feature of the play was the display of all the five stages of Lord Krishna, each Krishna along with each of his wives. Suman Vadlamani, Sobitha,Trilokta, Apporva Annanya Pallavi made the rasakreeda colorful and energetic. Special mention has to be made of the portrayal of Kansa by Silptha Pochiraju. The ballet concluded with a traditional mangalam. This was specially choreographed and directed by Srilatha Suri for this occasion. The assiduous and extreme care exercised by her in meticulously designing each scene, and paying attention to the minutest details added much to the glory of the presentation and is highly commendable. The thematic special effects designed by her, the backdrops befitting the theme of each scene to represent reality were especially noteworthy. It was a task of immense proportions, effort, and patience to train almost 90 disciples to perfection, and speaks eloquently of her dedication to the Kuchipudi dance form. Their performance with very lively and pleasant facial expressions and fine footwork and coordination endeared them to the audience. About 600 art lovers attended the event along with many community leaders with Echoes of India thanking all donors and media sponsors.

ISLAND LAKE GURDWARA IS DESTROYED IN BLAZE

I

BY A STAFF WRITER

SLAND LAKE (IL) -- Gurdwara Gurjot Parkash Sahib here, also known as Guru Nanak Sikh Mission of America, is closed after fire gutted the building on November 11. No one was inside the place of worship for Sikhs. Firefighters were dispatched at 8:25 pm in response to a fire alarm. They witnessed moderate smoke and found a fire in the lower level of the building. Attempts at extinguishing were unsuccessful from inside the building due to hidden fire in the walls and the floors above. Eventually, the fire was doused with hand lines and aerial master streams from the exterior due to the unsafe conditions within. It is learnt that the gurdwara was shut down in December 2011 by the local building department because of several safety violations. Among the most serious breaches were fire-exit doors locked from the inside with deadbolts, broken windows, four sleeping

rooms not permitted under village code, exposed wiring and a woman’s bathroom that was in disrepair, extension cords running through walls and vents; holiday lights hanging from power lines; and non-working electrical outlets that appeared discolored, possibly due to overheating, and no fire-

alarm system. The ban was later lifted and the shrine was allowed to run services again. Though the gurdwara was inaugurated in 1997, the building was initially built in the 1940s and is managed solely by Baba Daljit Singh. It had about 500 members as of 2006,

CHINMAYA MISSION FUND-RAISING GALA FOR NOBLE CAUSE A STAND-OUT

Supporting the Chinmaya Mission for its noble causes

BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- Living up to its theme, “Living in Harmony”, the Annual Fundraising Banquet for Chinmaya Mission Chicago harmoniously blended inspirational thoughts, spirited fund-raising, sumptuous food, and artistic performances into a memorable evening on November 9. The event took place at Waterford Banquet and Conference Center in Elmhurst, IL, with the goal to raise funds to support and enhance the programs offered by the two Chinmaya Mission centers in the Chicago area—Badri Center in Willowbrook, IL, and Yamunotri Center in Grayslake, IL. With over 700 people in attendance and more than $200,000 raised, the event was an overwhelming show of support for the spiritual and service-oriented work being done by the Mission, both at the local and global levels. The Mission, founded in the 1950s by the devotees of one of the greatest Vedantic Masters of the 20th century, Swami Chinmayananda, has over 400 centers worldwide. Its purpose, as stated in the words of Swami Chinmayananda, is, “To provide to individuals from any background the wisdom of Vedanta and the practical means for spiritual growth and happiness, enabling them to become positive contributors to society.” The current worldwide head of Chinmaya Mission is H.H. Swami Tejomayananda, who is

continuing the work of his Guru with immense love and devotion. The evening started by welcoming the revered guests. Swami Prakashananda (resident acharya of Trinidad & Tobago center), Swami Sharanananda (resident acharya of Chinmaya Mission Chicago), Acharya Jetindra Nayar & Acharya Swapna Nayar (resident Acharya of Chinmaya Mission Chicago), Acharya Shanker Pillai (President, Board of Trustees for Chinmaya Mission Chicago), and Dhiren Khatri (serving Chinmaya Mission Chicago after completing the two-year Vedanta Course in Mumbai) were received with the traditional purna-kumbha welcome ceremony. This was followed by lighting of the lamp in front of Swami Chinmayananda’s portrait, invoking His blessings to begin the program. Special invited dignitaries and supporters present were Drs. Bharat & Panna Barai : Nationally recognized social leader, Dr. Sudarshan & Mrs. Nitu Sharma, benefactors for both Badri and Yamunotri establishments, Dr. Gopal Lalmalani & Mrs. Nitu Lalmalani, recognized Cardiologist and President of city of Oak Brook, Drs. Ravi and Veena Bhagavat, devotees and Benefactors of Badri for nearly two decades and Padmini and Dr. Prakash Makkam, founding Family of Mission Center in NW Indiana. The highlight of the evening was the inspiration kindled by the Acharyas. Swami Sharanananda, Chicago’s beloved acharya, gave the inaugural welcome with his usual

humor and charm. He underscored in his message that the highest form of charity, which is much above providing food or donating money, is the gift of knowledge. Swami Prakashananda brought out the importance of harmony in this world by emphasizing that even though evil cannot be removed from the world, humanity can neutralize its effect by teaching people the values that can counter it. Acharya Shanker Pillai outlined the goals, activities, expansion plans, and the need for funds to continue meeting the growing needs of the community. He elaborated on the proposed idea of building well-planned retirement homes adjacent to the Badri Center, to support the physical and spiritual needs of senior citizens. Dr. Ashok Bhatia (executive board member of Chinmaya Mission Chicago) then elaborated on the current financial obligations of Chinmaya Mission and the various means to help with the funding. The entertainment for the evening was an enchanting mix of dances and music presented by children from the Bala Vihar program, supported by adult volunteers. Bala Vihar is an integral part of Chinmaya Mission and was started by Swami Chinmayananda to instill good values right from childhood and inspire kids to live a nobler life. In his own words, “Children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lit.” High school youth provided service throughout the evening by babysitting

Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (College students and young professionals) members—popularly referred to as CHYKs—captured the audience with their energetic presentation on the various avenues available to college students and young professionals to serve and grow spiritually. Past Bala Vihar students themselves, they shared their passion for serving through CORD (Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development), volunteering to teach weekly Bala Vihar classes, and investing in their own spiritual growth through YEP (Youth Empowerment Program), a two-month spiritual program for CHYKs. The event came to a conclusion with the chanting of Bhagavad Gita chapter XV, followed by a delicious meal served by India House restaurant. A complementary souvenir book with inspiring articles, information about classes offered at Chinmaya Mission Chicago, class pictures, and advertisements from local supporting companies was given to each family as a token of appreciation for attending the banquet. The message of “Living in Harmony” resonated throughout the event, evident in the harmonious working of the volunteers, both on and off the stage. Pilot dead in crash into home near Chicago’s Midway airport BY A STAFF WRITER

C

HICAGO (IL) -- A couple had a narrow escape when a small plane crashed into their home on Chicago’s Southwest Side, coming within eight inches of where they were sleeping in their bedroom early on November 18 morning. According to assistant deputy fire commissioner Michael Fox, the couple was unhurt but the pilot of the small cargo plane, an Aero Commander 500, did not survive the crash. The pilot departed from Midway International Airport at about 2:30 am and soon after reported engine problems. He was attempting to return to the airport when he went down. “He did not make it to the field. It looks he just went down just short of 31 Center,” an air traffic controller said. The pilot was bound for Chicago Executive Airport in Wheeling, Illinois but later the pilot amended his flight plan to Ohio State University Airport shortly before taking off. The plane went down about a quarter-

N mile from its departing runway at 2:42 a.m., into a house near West 65th Street and South Knox Avenue. It crashed through the front of the building, through the living and dining rooms and into the bedroom in the basement. Part of the plane came to rest on the roof of a home to the south of the heavily-damaged home. The condition of the aircraft indicated that there was no in-flight structural failure but it was certainly damaged though the air frame was more or less intact.

Jocelyn Mejia, 24, who lives down the block from the crash, said she went outside to see what happened after hearing the sound of a plane followed by a loud boom. Responding firefighters found the accident site but did not have to deal with an intense fire. Firefighters sprayed a layer of foam on the fuel to prevent a fire. The twin, piston-engine airplane, with a tail number of N30MB, was registered to Central Airlines Inc. out of Fairway, Kansas.

individual families,” Brown said. “My own ancestors from Germany came across the plains looking for a better life.” Amar Shergill, a Sikh activist and attorney, said: “The Sikh community is at a turning point that many immigrants go through. We’re no longer looking inward. We’re politically active, and the governor recognises this.”

Brown signed into law two legislative Bills -- Assembly Bill 1964 and Senate Bill 1540 in 2012. The 1964 Bill protects workers who wear sacred turbans, hijabs and yarmulkes and the 1540 Bill changes how history and social sciences are taught in schools so that students learn about the history, tradition and theology of California Sikhs. Bains, who arrived in California in 1958 from Punjab at the age of 18, is now a multimillionaire. He owns about 40,000 acres of land in Sutter, Yuba, Butte, Sacramento, Glenn and Tehema counties, said his son Karm Bains. “We are blessed. We farm peaches, prunes, walnuts and almonds and have processing plants.”

CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR HONORS SIKH FARMER ALIFORNIA -- Didar Bains, a farmer known as the “Peach King of California”, was honored on November 16 by California Governor Jerry Brown for his service to society. Brown praised Bains and thousands of other immigrants from India who, he said, have enriched the US with their culture and work ethics. “It’s an honour and a privilege to be here,” Brown told some 2,000 Sikhs who came from as far away as Los Angeles to the West Sacramento gurdwara. Brown talked about his own family’s immigrant history. “What builds California and America is not one group or any bureaucracy... it’s

A treat for spiritual seekers

Kairali Ayurvedic Group brings authentic ayurveda from Kerala to the pious wharfs of Rishikesh NIVEDITA, RISHIKESH

G

anga Aarti, lamps floating in the river, streets lined with architectural temples, foreigners dressed in Indian wear — one gets to see all this on the way to the Sanskriti Vedic Retreat, a resort that provides yoga and meditation services to spiritual lovers. The Kairali Ayurvedic Group has brought authentic ayurveda from Kerala to the pious wharfs of Rishikesh on the banks of the Ganga river in the foothills of the Himalayas. A unique feature of the property is the promise of serving the best of ancient Indian traditions — ayurveda, yoga, meditation and spirituality — offering a joyful aliveness and spirituality to both locals and foreigners alike. “Yoga and meditation are the

processes of inward journey to attain the highest goal of life. The present-day yoga is very popular in its physical form (asanas) but very few follow yoga as the philosophy of mind. That yoga brings the stillness of the mind which is free of conflict inside,” yoga teacher

Bhola Shankar Dabral told IANS. The resort has six rooms that have been named after famous holy destinations: Rishikesh, Varanasi, Allahabad, Haridwar, Devpraayg and Kolkata, all facing the holy Ganga. Most of the visitors at the property are from coun-

tries like the U.S., Canada and South Africa. For them, the most fascinating thing about the retreat is how it provides age-old Indian services as a modern day utility. The resort scores high on providing comfort and a personal touch to all its guests. From fashioning individual diets to attendants available all day long to take care of their every need, it knows how to make visitors happy. What better way can there be to perform yoga and meditate along with taking a glimpse of the Ganga? Yes, the yoga studio is located in a such a way that it overlooks the river for a soulful rendition of life and humanity. One can learn yoga from quali-

fied and experienced teachers. The 28-day course helps in experiencing one’s true self and through which one can learn about Indian philosophy, Sanskrit and Vedanta. The retreat also offers weekly yoga and meditation workshops that help discover the mystical secrets of life and creation. The most common practices of yoga that most foreigners try to learn here include Hatha yoga, Astanga yoga, Kundalini yoga, Raja yoga and Mantra yoga. Last but not the least, there is the completely vegetarian food. Alcohol is a strict no no. Among the popular dishes are Indian thali, rice noodles with sesame ginger vegetables, and date balls.

Khadi goes chic, turns money-spinner IANS, NEW DELHI

K High-earning, playful men ensure stronger orgasm for women NEW YORK: Find a rich, funny partner if you want a super sex life. According to an interesting research, women who have funny, self-confident and high-earning partners report more stronger orgasms. Psychologist George Gallup and his colleagues from the University at Albany interviewed female college students in committed relationships. The participants rated how often they reached orgasm during sex and this was compared to their partner’s family income, self-confidence and attractiveness, MailOnline reported.

Researchers looked at whether orgasm intensity, frequency and sexual satisfaction are determined by a woman’s choice of partner. They found that a partner’s sense of humor not only predicted his selfconfidence and family income but it also predicted a woman’s propensity to initiate sex, how often the couple had sex and it enhanced orgasm frequency. Sexual satisfaction was also related to how physically attracted women were to their partner and breadth of their shoulders.
