CHENNAI: Debutante Shaun Romy says she found working with filmmaker Rajeev Ravi in upcoming Malayalam film Kammati Paadam, starring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead, very motivating and invigorating. “Everyone around Rajeev spoke so greatly about his work on the sets. It automatically got me very motivated and the experience of working with him was very refreshing. He’s always calm on the sets and tells his actors to be in the moment,” Romy told IANS. In Kammati Paadam, Romy plays a character from the 1990s. “The only challenge about playing the role was getting the Kochi slang right. The dialect is different, and hence, I found it difficult to emote,” she said adding that getting into skin of the character wasn’t tough. “Once I wore the make-up and costumes, I didn’t find playing a role from the 1990s difficult, because I was also surrounded by people who

looked the same, like they were from the same era,” she said. The film also stars Rasika Dugal and Vinay Fort. She was working with a Bio Technology company before she was signed on for Kammati Paadama.

e warned. This overblown overbaked sci-fi-meetsmythology-meets-Ekta Kapoor saga of time travel is strictly for Suriya aficionados. As expected, the actor is in full form here. Like Kamal Haasan, Suriya now threatens to become many sizes larger than his films. His recent films have either featured him in more than one role or as bombastic rhetoric-spewing unzippered heroes with motormouthed dialogues that looked designed for Rajinikanth. In 24, Suriya plays three roles. He is Sethuraman, an amiable scientist and his ‘watch mechanic’ (the term is used at least 34 times)

son, and his evil twin brother Athreya who slays the scientist and his wife (Nithya Menen) in what could easily be forsaken footage from a Quentin Tarantino film. The sheer gruesomeness of

Menen’s murder should have served as a chilling precursor to Athreya’s ruthlessly evil designs. However, his ensuing actions make him look more like a spoilt silly sibling than a super-villain who

hankers to get his scientist-brother’s time travel watch. The tiresome and over-cute relationship between Mani and his foster-mother (Saranya Ponvanan) seems to have been ripped off from Baahubali. Regrettably “24” has more bark than bite. It sets out to change the way Indian cinema looks at the sci-fi genre. The tension in the plot is substantially diminished by the writer’s zeal to be cleverer than the

audience. Time games are played between the characters with some catastrophic consequences to the narrative’s equilibrium. The special effects and the visual dazzle are largely mediocre. Tirru’s cinematography seems awed by its own wizardry. The action sequences are rugged but inconsistent. What holds this unwieldy saga together to some extent, is Suriya’s ebullient efforts to play the three characters at different scales. Finally though Suriya and the film’s ambitions are defeated by the quality of the writing which at best is mediocre. Suriya deserves better. —Subhash K. Jha

Trump comes to DC House Republicans press House speaker to back triumphant Trump as he comes to Washington to meet him

Muslim ban was ‘just a suggestion’

A

s a triumphant Donald Trump comes to Washington to meet House speaker Paul Ryan, rankand file House Republicans are pressing the latter to fall behind the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Ryan’s resistance to endorsing Trump could lead to the party fracturing as “It makes it harder to unite,” said Raul Labrador, a leader of conservative House Freedom Caucus ahead of the May12 meeting between the speaker and the party’s new standard-bearer. Commenting on Ryan’s remark that “it’s Donald Trump’s duty to unite the party,” another member asked at a meeting of House Republicans, “So Mr. Speaker, what’s your job regarding unity?” “To pretend we are unified without actually unifying means we go into the fall at half-strength,” said Ryan, “This election is too important to go into an election at half-strength.” Many House Republicans members, according to CNN shared some of Ryan’s concerns about the controversial billionaire, but after his lengthy string of convincing primary victories, they are resigned to lining up behind Trump. Ryan ha also suggested he hoped

Trump would show an openness to change on both substance and tone when they meet on May 12, but Trump believes he has the “mandate” to be himself and has no intention of reinventing himself for the presidential poll. Meanwhile, Trump’s candidacy is said have sparked ‘a surge’ in citizenship, voter applications among Latinos primarily motivated by Trump’s

plans to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants and building a wall on the US-Mexico border, the Washington Post reported. On the Democratic side, a group of staffers and volunteers of Bernie Sanders, who is giving a tough fight to frontrunner Hillary Clinton, are pressing him to get out of the presidential race after the Democratic primaries and con-

centrate on building a national progressive organization to stop Donald Trump. With Sanders unlikely to get enough delegates to beat Clinton, they want him to launch an independent political group far larger than any other recent post-campaign political operations, like those started by Howard Dean or Barack Obama, the Politico reported.

WASHINGTON: Republican party’s presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump has demoted his proposed Muslim immigration ban to a mere “suggestion”. In a radio interview with Fox News this week, Trump softened his call to temporarily prohibit Muslims from entering the US. “We have a serious problem. It’s a temporary ban. It hasn’t been called for yet. Nobody’s done it. This is just a suggestion until we find out what’s going on,” Trump said. But Trump did not mince words in linking Muslims to the proliferation of terrorism around the world, Politico reported. “We have radical Islamic terrorism all over the world. You can go to Paris, you can go to San Bernardino, all over the world: If they want to deny it, they can deny it. I don’t choose to deny it,” he said. Trump’s comments came a day after he claimed he would make an “exception” for London’s first Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, to enter the US.

Sanders beats Clinton in West Virginia primary ‘Will release ‘Area 51’ information’ WASHINGTON: Democrat hopeful Bernie Sanders won the primary in West Virginia — a state where rival and party front-runner Hillary Clinton had won in 2008. With 61.7 percent of precincts by May10 evening, Sanders led Clinton 51 percent to 36.7 percent, Politico reported. “With our victory tonight (May 10 night) in West Virginia, we have now won primaries and caucuses in 19 states. And let me be as clear as I can be: We are in this campaign to win the Democratic nomination,” Sanders told a cheering crowd of supporters in Salem, Oregon, which will go to polls on May 17. In a separate statement released by Sanders’ campaign, the Vermont senator thanked “the people of West Virginia for the tremendous victory they gave us today in a state that provided a landslide vote for Hillary Clinton in 2008.” Clinton beat then Senator Barack Obama by 40 points in 2008, a

stark contrast. “West Virginia is a working-class state and many of the people there are hurting. They know, like most Americans, that it is too late for establishment politics and establishment economics. They want real change,” Sanders said. Democrats also voted on Tuesday in a presidential “beauty contest” in Nebraska, although the delegates from that state were all previously

assigned during a March 5 caucus. In that contest, Sanders won 15 pledged delegates, compared to 10 for Clinton. So far, Clinton is leading Sanders by 1,705 to 1,415 in pledged delegates and 523 to 39 in superdelegates, an overall lead of 2,228 to 1,454. With only 926 pledged delegates remaining, Sanders’ hopes rest with superdelegates deciding to abandon Clinton in large numbers.

WASHINGTON: Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton has promised to release information about Area 51 — a Nevada Air Force base where many believe the US keeps top secret information about extraterrestrial beings — if she is elected president. However, President Barack Obama has no plans to open up government files on the matter, Politico quoted White House press secretary Josh Earnest as saying. “I have to admit that I don’t have a tab in my briefing book for Area 51,” Earnest said after he was asked whether the president wants to beat Clinton to the punch before he leaves office. The spokesman said he is ”not aware of any plans the president has to make public any information about this,” adding that he’s not sure whether Obama has reviewed any government files on extraterrestrial life forms. Clinton made the proposal in all seriousness last month during a radio interview and has demonstrated more than a casual understanding of the

issue, The New York Times reported. When she appeared on talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live recently, the host asked her whether she believes in unidentified flying objects (UFO). Clinton, a noted policy wonk, quickly corrected Kimmel’s improper terminology. “You know, there’s a new name,” Clinton said, adding “It’s unexplained aerial phenomenon. U.A.P. That’s the latest nomenclature.”

Shuttling between the two meetings, at the Assembly he criticised

the UN’s ineffectiveness and lack of focus in dealing with terrorism and suggested creating an anti-terrorism czar at the UN. “Here at the United Nations there is a disaggregated counter terrorism infrastructure with no effort to tie them together in a seamless weave under a high level functionary,” he said. “We need to address this.” “The fight against terrorism is not succeeding so far because there is insufficient international coop-

Efforts to adopt the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism have stalled for over 20 years because of differences over defining terrorist organizations and terrorists. Meanwhile, China’s veto has prevented Pakistan-based Jaish-eMohamed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, who is behind the January Pathankot air force base attack, from being put on a UN sanctions list as a terrorist and action against Pakistan for freeing Zaki-urRehman Lakhvi, the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack. Over 1 lakh villages drought-hit NEW DELHI: Over one lakh villages in 313 districts of 13 states, sheltering roughly one-fourth of India’s population, have been affected by drought and scarcity of drinking water, the Lok Sabha was informed this week. Making a brief intervention during a general discussion under Rule 193, Rural Development Minister Birender Singh said that going by statistics, it appeared that nearly 25 percent of the country’s population was drought-hit. The governments in Bihar and Haryana have so far not declared the two states drought-hit, the minister said. “Even the Gujarat government has not declared the entire state as affected by drought. They are calling it drought only in some parts,” Singh said amid repeated interruptions and slogan-shouting by Congress men.

day after ousted Chief Minister Harish Rawat won the trust vote, the union cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked President’s Rule in Uttarakhand to pave the way for the Congress government’s return in the state. The cabinet decision came after the BJP-led central government told the Supreme Court that Rawat got 33 votes while 28 legislators voted against him in the floor test supervised by the apex court this week. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told Justices Dipak Misra and Shiva Kirti Singh that there was “no doubt” that Rawat had the legislative strength to head the state government. “It is clear (Rawat) has proved the majority,” Rohatgi said. The court asked the central government ”to revoke forthwith the order of proclamation of President’s Rule” to let Rawat return as the chief minister, adding it had ordered the floor test on “concession by the parties”. “We may hasten to add, we directed for floor test on concession of the parties and we had var-

ied the order today on a prayer being made by the union of India,” the court said. Rawat’s victory, which was already known but officially announced, sparked jubilation in the Congress camp in Dehradun as well as in Delhi. In Delhi, the Congress said it was the “victory of democracy”.

Did DU have computers in 1978? MODI DEGREE

IANS, NEW DELHI

L

aunching an attack on Delhi University over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s degree, the AAP sought to know if the university had computers in 1978. Again highlighting the “discrepancies” in the graduation degree and marksheets of Modi, AAP leader Ashutosh said: “The name and marks of the candidate were printed in Modi’s marksheets released by the BJP. “However in the documents of other candidate who passed out in 1978, the name and marks were handwritten. “Similarly, the university logo on Modi’s degree is printed in modern font while the original degrees had simple font. This clearly shows that the degree is fake,” he told the media here.

The Aam Aadmi Party also countered the university’s claims that the degree was original and it had verified it. The registrar of the university claimed they have verified the records and that Modi’s degree was

original. However, referring to DU’s response to an RTI filed by Maharashtra-based activist Anil Galgali, Ashutosh said the university then said it did not keep records as old as three to four decades old.

“Hope Modiji learns his lesson. People of this country and the institutions built by our founding fathers will not tolerate the murder of democracy,” Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi tweeted. But Rawat, 69, said he had no acrimony with the BJP government and needed its support for the state’s progress.

“It has been a tense period, a period of uncertainty and the state suffered losses. But all is well that ends well,” an elated Rawat told a crowded news conference in Dehradun. The return of the Congress government, however, awaits President Pranab Mukherjee’s proclamation.

Agusta: Never met Sonia, Manmohan, says Michel NEW DELHI: Christian Michel, one of the middleman in the AgustaWestland chopper deal, has said in an interview to a news channel that he “never met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh” and that neither the Congress nor the present NDA government “interfered in the deal”. In an interview to India Today TV, Michel also said that Delhi-based lawyer Gautam Khaitan, former board member of Aeromatrix, was the brain behind the scandal. He said that the only person he had met related to the Agusta deal was former Indian Air Force chief S.P. Tyagi. 2 years of Modi:

Pluses and minuses There have been areas where the Modi government has not had stellar performance and much needs to be done in security, health and education, among others AMIT KAPOOR, NEW DELHI

T

he Narendra Modi government has been in office for almost two years. There have been some strong areas of performance and other areas where the government has not had stellar performance and much needs to be done. Let us start from the traditional responsibilities of the nation state like security, health and education, among others. In the case of security both domestic security and foreign policy play a key role. The Modi government has been keen on the kind of vigour and agility that it has brought to the foreign policy discourse. However, the institutional capacity regarding the number of diplomats and missions to different countries has been a limiting factor. The existing framework for the foreign policy implementation for a country the size of India is far smaller than what is required. Also, the kind of depth regarding research and experts which is need-

ed is missing. This is where a systematic improvement concerning capability and numbers is required. The Modi government, to its credit, has touch based with 130 countries in the two years but this will have to be substantiated with ongoing processes and engagements rather than one-off meetings. On internal security and home affairs, the performance has been on a par with the previous regimes. Though some incidents did take place which were “communal killings” especially like that of a man lynched in Dadri for consuming beef (an unfortunate incident), the situation is similar to the previous regimes. The Maoist movement remains a potent threat to the peace and stability in many districts of India as it had during the previous regimes. The only way to neutralise this menace is mainstreaming the Maoists, who are misled about the nature of the Indian state. On health and education, the government is seen shifting the responsibility more on the states. This is because of the govern-

ment’s acceptance of the proposals of the 14th Finance Commission, which increased the allocation of states from 32 percent to 42 percent of the divisible funds. This is a welcome step but the problem still pertains to the capability of the states to understand and have the capacity to use the funds for health and education. In the healthcare domain, the challenges seem to increase with changing disease patterns, especially with the coming of lifestyle diseases like diabetes and the like. The aim of a productive population can only be fulfilled in a disease-free society. In this context, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Programme) was a positive step. However, how much of an impact it has had on people littering on the streets/maintaining cleanliness is not very well documented/understood. Apart from the basic responsibilities, some other areas include electricity and power supply, roads and railways where the government is seen providing proactive service to people.

ttar Pradesh is up for grabs in next year’s assembly elections. With anti-incumbency stalking the Akhilesh Yadav government, Narendra Modi losing his earlier appeal and Mayawati yet to live down her statue-building extravaganza when in power, there is no obvious winner. Seeing the empty field, the hero of Bihar’s Â’mahagathbandhanÂ’ or grand alliance, Nitish Kumar, decided to try his luck by cobbling together a motley combination of his own Janata Dal-United (JDU), Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal, Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha, the virtually unknown Peace Party of Mohammed Ayub Ansari and so on. But the Bihar chief minister’s house of cards fell down even before it was readied

with Ajit Singh walking out. Into this untidy scene walked Prashant Kishor, the election strategist with two successes under his belt — Modi’s and Nitish Kumar’s victories in 2014 and 2015. He has been handpicked by Rahul Gandhi to deliver Uttar Pradesh to the Congress and it is a tribute to the putative election mastermind’s courage that he has had no hesitation in taking up what must appear to most as a lost cause. Prashant Kishor’s venture may also be a display of the over-confidence bred by his two successes. But those were predictable achievements since, in 2014, Modi was on a roll with a scamtainted Manmohan Singh government committing hara-kiri. Prashant Kishor, therefore, is facing his biggest test. His opening gambit was to suggest that Rahul Gandhi be projected as a

chief ministerial candidate. It was promptly shot down by, among others, Jairam Ramesh, who said that the Congress vice president was preparing to take over as the party chief in the near future. Of all the states, Uttar Pradesh’s association with the Nehru-Gandhis is expected to enthuse a section of voters if a member of the dynasty is named as a chief minister. The Brahmins and the Muslims are mentioned in this context. But the choice of the people and of the family may not be the same — whatever be Prashant Kishor’s game plan. It goes without saying that the projection of Priyanka will put Rahul in the shade during the campaign and more so if the Congress shows signs of revival. Priyanka also featured in the placards along with her mother and brother to suggest a churning process in the party.

Most Americans don’t agree with Donald Trump: Kal Penn Trump, who is expected to clash with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, has often been tagged often been tagged ‘anti-immigrant’, ‘misogynist’, ‘racist’ and ‘worse’ IANS, NEW DELHI

‘American TV more diverse than films’

ndian-American actor Kal Penn, who served in the Barack Obama administration, feels most Americans don’t agree with Republicans’ presumptive nominee Donald Trump’s racist views. “I seriously believe that most of the Americans don’t agree with Donald Trump over his racist, antiwomen, anti-LGBT practices. We are not that country. Hopefully elections will prove that,” Penn, who was associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement from 2009 to 2011, said at the “Cultural Connections in US-India Relations” at the American Center in New Delhi. Trump, who is expected to clash with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton in November, has been opposed by peoples and critics, and often been tagged “antiimmigrant”, “misogynist”, “racist” and “worse”. During the event, Penn’s 2007

film The Namesake, which also stars Bollywood actors Irrfan Khan and Tabu, was screened. Sharing his experience about campaigning for Obama, Penn said that it would not be “weird” for him to shift from acting to politics. “For me it was an honor to get a chance to serve for your country,” said Penn, whose real name is Kalpen Suresh Modi, and is best known for his role of Kumar Patel in

Obama honors Indian-American teacher Revathi Balakrishnan IANS, NEW YORK

n recognition of her excellent work in the field of education, President Barack Obama honored Indian-American Revathi Balakrishnan, a teacher at Patsy Sommer Elementary School in Austin, Texas, media reported. Indian American Balakrishnan was also named 2016 ‘Texas Elementary Teacher of the Year’, The American Bazaar reported on May 11. Currently teaching math classes in third through fifth grade at Sommer, Balakrishnan, who was honored last week, will now represent Texas in the ‘National Teacher of the Year’ competition. About 30 percent of the students at Patsy Sommer Elementary School are of Asian or Indian-origin. “I feel proud to represent those and I can convince a lot of younger generation Indian kids to turn to teaching for a career. So I feel I can actually have some impact on that,” Balakrishnan was quoted as saying. Balakrishnan has taught at the school for six years, with a previous stint at the Forest North Elemen-

the popular Harold & Kumar film franchise. He has also appeared on TV shows like House, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Brain Theory. Penn is in India for the shooting of Guneet Monga’s upcoming project The Ashram. With Ben Rekhi as the director, the film is an English-language spiritual fantasy thriller set in the mystical world of Himalayan yogis.

NEW DELHI: Indian-American actor Kal Penn, who has been playing pivotal roles in the American entertainment industry for over a decade now, feels their TV industry is more diverse as compared to their films when it comes to portraying Indians in a stereotypical manner. Penn believes that the American TV industry has become very diverse in the last decade as compared to earlier times. “Stereotypes stand overall but, American TV has advanced a lot, even more than American movies in the last 10 years,” Penn said at the “Cultural Connections in US-India Relations” event, which took place at the American Center in New Delhi. He further stated that there are shows like New Girl, Mindy Project and Master of None, which are helping American TV industry to become more diverse. Apart from TV, Penn feels stream-

ing sites are also big platforms that are showcasing diverse content. “(Actor-comedian) Aziz Ansari is crushing it everywhere. I mean he is amazing... his stand up is incredible. TV is changing in a big way. Films are slow to change and there are a number of reasons for that but there is a reason that cutting edge digital platform is the place for a lot more diversity,” Penn said. “Priyanka’s (Chopra) show is on ABC. I have a new show coming in fall which I am very excited about. Bigger networks are also taking the lead... In the upcoming years TV will become more diverse. Same will happen with films,” he added. Penn is in India for the shooting of Guneet Monga’s upcoming project The Ashram. Directed by Ben Rekhi, the English-language spiritual fantasy thriller also stars Melissa Leo, Sam Keeley, Hera Hilmar and Radhika Apte.

They will travel from Tripoli to Istan-

our Indian-Americans have been indicted for hatching a plot to commit H-1B visa fraud, use of false documents and mail fraud among other offenses, the US federal prosecutors said in an official statement. The couple Sunitha Guntipally and Venkat Guntipally, Pratap “Bob” Kondamoori and Sandhya Ramireddi, allegedly used three California corporations to orchestrate the improper submission of more than 100 H-1B specialtyoccupation work visa applications, said the statement from the US Attorney’s Office Northern District of California. In a 33-count indictment filed

last weekend, all the four are charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud, false statements, mail fraud, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering and aiding and abetting these offenses.

The defendants submitted to the government, or caused to be submitted, H-1B visa application materials stating that the foreign workers named in the applications

would be placed at specific companies in the US, the statement read. However, those companies either did not exist or never intended to receive the foreign workers named in the defendants’ applications. The indictment alleges that through their ownership, direction and control of two companies — DS Soft Tech and Equinett — the Guntipallys generated net profits of about $3.3 million and gross profits of approximately $17 million from 2010-2014. According to the indictment, the husband-wife team founded and owned DS Soft Tech and Equinett where Venkat served as president and Sunitha as vice president of both the firms.

Unopposed Manohar elected ICC chairman

Manohar, who stepped down as the head of the BCCI on May 10, will commence his two-year term with immediate effect IANS, DUBAI

F

ormer BCCI president Shashank Manohar on May 12 was elected unopposed as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He is the first to bag the post without any board affiliation. Manohar stepped down as the head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on May 10. He will commence his two-year term with immediate effect. “I look forward to working with all stakeholders to shape the future of cricket, which has a proud history and rich tradition,” Manohar said in a statement. “It is an honor to be elected as the chairman of the International Cricket Council and for that I am thankful to all the ICC directors who have put their faith and trust in my abilities. “I also take this opportunity to thank all my colleagues in the BCCI who have supported me during my recent time as the BCCI’s president. “These are exciting times for international cricket as we are presently carrying out a compre-

hensive review of the 2014 constitutional amendments which is aimed at not only improving governance structures, but cricket structures as well,” Manohar said. “The ultimate objective is to grow our sport and engage a whole

new generation of fans and I look forward to working with all stakeholders to shape the future of cricket, which has a proud history and rich tradition.” Manohar’s second stint as the BCCI boss only lasted for seven

months. He took over following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya in October 2015 and, by virtue of that position, has held the role of the ICC chief since then. He was elected the chairman following ICC Full Council’s approval of constitutional amendments proposed by the Board following its April meeting that suggested the abolition of the post of president. According to the election process, ICC directors were each allowed to nominate one candidate, who had to be either a present or past director. Nominees with the support of two or more full member directors would have been eligible to contest the election, which was scheduled to have been concluded by May 23. Manohar was the sole nominee for the position and the ICC board unanimously supported his appointment. The election process was overseen by the independent Audit Committee chairman Adnan Zaidi. He declared the process complete, and Manohar the successful candidate. Manohar served his first stint as the BCCI president from 2008-11.

MADRID: Jesus Tomillero, who in March came out as the first openly gay referee in Spanish football, has confirmed he was leaving the game as the result of the continuing abuse received from players and supporters in the past two months. Tomillero confirmed his decision in the Spanish press on May 11 in the wake of a game he was refereeing in the Andalusian Under-19 league at the weekend between Portuense and San Fernando Isleno, reports Xinhua. He said that after giving a penalty after San Fernando, one of their supporters verbally abused him. “The worst thing was that everyone in the crowd laughed,” explained Tomillero, who had been a referee since he was 11 years old. Tomillero, who lives in La Linea de la Concepcion in the southwest of Spain, gave an interview to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser on April 7. He admitted that since revealing his sexuality he had received a lot of insults on the pitch, even from children. “The younger players are, the more intolerant they seem to be,” he said.

Navi Mumbai to host Will knockout Vijender: Boxer Soldra rock climbing World Cup MUMBAI: The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup of Rock Climbing will be hosted by Navi Mumbai from May 13 to 16 at the CIDCO Exhibition Centre, in Vashi, here. The World Cup will feature the likes of World No.1 and winner of the last three World Cups Shauna Coxsey, No.2 Akiyo Noguchi and three-time World Cup winner, No.3 and two-time World Cup winner Rustam Gelmanov. These athletes will provide the Mumbai crowd with an amazing display of skill and technique of the sport. Nearly 150-200 men and women, the world’s best climbers will be in Navi Mumbai competing at the fourday international event in the discipline of bouldering. As host nation, India’s best climbers will have a chance to compete alongside the world’s best on home turf.

IANS, BOLTON

P Franco Linhares, president of the World Cup organizing committee, said in a release on Wednesday, “We are very proud to have the opportunity to conduct the World Cup in India and are looking forward to a great tournament.” “It is a privilege to have some of the best climbers from across the globe compete in India for the first time at an event of such magnitude. We would like to urge the people of Mumbai to come out and watch, support and be a part of this World Cup.”

olish boxer Andrzej Soldra has promised to stop Vijender Singh’s winning streak when they clash at the Macron Stadium Premier Suite on May 13. Vijender has had a superb start to his professional boxing career. He has featured in five professional fights so far and has won all of them by technical knockout. Soldra, who has the edge in experience over the Indian with 81 rounds under his belt compared to Vijender’s 14, holds a record of 12 wins with five knockouts from 16 fights. Soldra also has a brilliant record in his amateur career with 82 wins from 98 fights. Vijender will have to be at the top of his game if he is to overcome his biggest challenge to date. “Friday the 13th is going to be a horror show for India’s golden boy Vijender. It’s about time his lucky streak came to an end and I’m

going to be the man who delivers the knockout blow! He has had it easy up until now, us Polish are a different breed and he is going to be in for a shock on Friday,” Soldra said. “I am on a different level to all of his previous opponents. I have a

solid winning record and I am not familiar with losing. These bums he has been fighting have been falling over but I am coming to England to fight! When I start landing on him he’s going to be in a whole world of trouble,” he added.

en more states have approached the union government for additional funds in the form of drought relief packages sanctioned to Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. Rajasthan is the latest entry to the lot and submitted a memorandum on May 9 asking for central assistance of around Rs.1,800 crore to tackle the drought situation in the state, an official from the union agriculture ministry told IANS. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat, Haryana and Jharkhand are the other states that have asked for additional funds to compensate their drought hit farmers, the official said declining to be named. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sanctioned Rs.1,540 crore for Karnataka and Rs.934.32 crore for Uttar Pradesh when he met the respective chief ministers on May 7. These sanctioned amounts are in addition to the funds released by the Centre as part of the National Disaster Response Fund for the two states. villages in Maharashtra are reeling under drought of varying severity this year, while in Odisha, 27 out of the total 30 districts have been officially declared drought hit. The Telangana government has also declared 231 of its 443 administrative blocks as drought-affected. Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao is also expected to meet the prime minister later this week and apprise him about the situation in his state, agriculture ministry officials said. Andhra Pradesh has declared that 359 of its 670 mandals have been affected by drought. Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary

P.K. Sinha has told the chief secretaries of all 29 states and seven union territories to make ample arrangements to preserve rain water this monsoon season. In a letter to them, Sinha has stressed that the states must get all the ponds or water storage facilities de-silted through MGNREGA before the monsoon approaches. “India has 5,20,000 irrigation tanks or ponds with the storage capacity of 3,000 crore cubic meters. De-silting can be a cost effective way of improving water storage capacity and MGNREGA funds can be used for this activity,” Sinha said in his letter.

He also requested the states to complete digging 8.77 lakh farm ponds, already approved by the union government before the onset of the monsoon season. Meanwhile, a survey conducted by NGO Swaraj Abhiyan of activist Yogendra Yadav has reflected on the gravity of the drought that has hit Bundelkhand area -straddling the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. “Forty percent villages of Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna and Datia of Madhya Pradesh have only one to two functional hand pumps in each village,” the survey said.

in the IFFCO Kissan Special Economic Zone at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. It will first manufacture blades for 2 MW wind mills and later the nacelles, generators and other component assemblies. The plant is expected to start commercial production on August 15 this year, Kymal said. On the choice of location, he said the 24-hour power supply, ease of doing business, supportive bureaucracy and political leadership, and proximity to markets are the reasons for choosing Andhra Pradesh. He said there is potential for growth for wind power in states like Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Kymal said that with new-generation machines, power could be generated even in areas where wind

speed is relatively low. He said the company retained its leadership position in India by installing wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,003 MW. Cumulatively Gamesa has installed 3,000 MW of wind power in India and Sri Lanka (45 MW). In the last fiscal the company had installed wind mills with a

total capacity of 1,003 MW and the plant load factor (PLF) of each machine is around 30 percent, Kymal said. Speaking about re-powering or installing new machines in place of low-capacity older machines, he said policies need to be changed so that a new power purchase agreement is signed for supply of power at the revised rate.

PUNE: Defying all odds, including religious discrimination that forced him to adopt a Hindu identity, a 21year old Muslim boy from Maharashtra has cracked the prestigious UPSC examinations, the results of which were announced on May 10. Since the results came out, the candidate, Ansar Ahmad Shaikh, son of an autorickshaw driver and brother of a garage hand, has been besieged with calls and visits from well-wishers, friends, relatives, media-persons and even strangers. He hails from the Shelgaon village in Jalna district in the heart of drought-hit Marathwada region and considers the UPSC results as his “advance present” for his upcoming 22nd birthday on June 1, a thrilled relative told journalists.

“In Tamil Nadu alone 3,000 MW to 5,000 MW capacity can be added by re-powering/replacing the old machines,” Kymal said. According to Kymal, the company’s order book position for wind turbines is 750 MW and for solar power projects, it is 150 MW. Last year, a total of around 3,400 MW of wind power was added and in the current fiscal the capacity addition is expected to be between 4,000-4,500 MW, said executive vice-president (sales and marketing) D.G. Kamath. He said Gamesa will retain its 29 percent market share this year. On the solar power projects, Kymal said the company has the approvals to set up projects totalling 10,000 MW. “We don’t want to bid in the solar power sector. The market will witness a shakeout as the tariff rates are not economical. Already we are seeing exits from the sector by some players. We will get into bidding for solar power projects at an appropriate time,” he said.

‘Baahubali...’ team heads to Cannes “Baahubali: The Beginning” will be leading a panel discussion at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival and is scheduled to be screened at the prestigious film fest IANS, MUMBAI

T

he movie Baahubali: The Beginning’s director S.S. Rajamouli and producer Shobu Yarlagadda will be leading a panel discussion at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. The southern magnum opus will also be screened at the prestigious film fest. Rajamouli, who got the Best Feature Film award at the recently held 63rd National Film Awards, will lead a discussion on virtual reality (VR) at the Marché du Film, a film market event taking place alongside the festival. The film festival will take place from May 11 to May 22.

And the film’s team will be part of the gala on May 16. The director of the film, producer along with Raja Koduri, will lead a panel discussion titled Increasing the Intensity and Scale of Epic Film Experiences through VR at the NEXT Pavilion, read a statement. The panel will discuss new opportunities that a storyteller has today through VR, to create experiences with unprecedented scale and immersiveness, the need for new technology and powerful graphics processors (GPU’s) to build these experiences and challenges in VR production and new ways to distribute these experiences to reach a mass audience.

The interactive panel will be streamed live via the official Facebook page of Baahubali: The Beginning. After the discussion, the film will be screened at Palais K at the Marché Du Film venue in Cannes. Baahubali: The Beginning, which was a box office wonder, has been lauded for being an imaginative film, monumental by its production values and cinematic brilliance in creating a fantasy world on the screen. Post its success, the second part of the film Baahubali: The Conclusion is the second part in the franchise and it is tipped to be made on a higher budget.

FILM REVIEW | TAMIL

‘24’: Tiresome time travel tripe with likeable performance by Suriya

B

e warned. This overblown overbaked sci-fi-meetsm y t h o l o g y - m e e t s - Ek t a Kapoor saga of time travel is strictly for Suriya aficionados.

Film: “24”; Director: Vikram Kumar; Cast: Suriya, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Nithya Menen; Rating: **

son, and his evil twin brother Athreya who slays the scientist and his wife (Nithya Menen) in what could easily be forsaken footage from a Quentin Tarantino film.

—Subhash K. Jha

SC upholds income A.R. Rahman launches trailer of ‘Pele: Birth of a Legend’ tax plea against Big B M Restores IT commissioner’s order; set aside the August 28, 2007 order of the ITAT and the August 7, 2008 HC order IANS, NEW DELHI

T

he Supreme Court on May 12 upheld a plea by income tax authorities challenging a Bombay High Court order permitted mega star Amitabh Bachchan tax relief in earnings made from “Kaun Banega Crorepati” (KBC). An apex court bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Prafulla C. Pant said: “We are of the opinion that the present is a fit case for exercise of the suo motu revisional powers of the CIT (Commissioner of Income Tax) under Section 263 of the (Income Tax) Act.” Restoring the income tax commissioner’s order, the bench set aside the August 28, 2007 order of the

Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ to release on July 1 CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth’s upcoming Tamil gangster drama “Kabali” will hit the marquee on July 1, a source said. “The film was earlier slated to release in June. It has been now pushed to July 1. The makers had also planned to release on July 7 but have advanced the release to avoid a clash with Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’,” a source from the film’s unit told IANS. Directed by Pa. Ranjith, “Kabali” is the story of the rise of a gangster from rags-to-riches. The makers are currently busy with the post-production work and dubbing.

Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) and the August 7, 2008 order of the high court.

Disposing of the plea by the income tax department, the bench said: “However, we have to add that as the re-assessment order dated December 29, 2006 had not been tested on merits, the assessee would be free to do so, if he is so inclined and so advised.” The matter relates to the assessment order passed on March 30, 2004 in respect of the star’s income from the popular quiz show KBC in the fiscal year 2001-02. But according to the chartered accountants and the legal advisory team of Amitabh, the case had no relation to the KBC case. It further said that the Supreme Court had given Amitabh the right to appeal against the re-assessment order.

umbai: Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman on May 9 launched the trailer of “Pele: Birth of a Legend”, which is an upcoming American biographical film about the Brazilian football legend Pele. “I can see lot of parallels in Pele because when my father was about to make it independently (as a composer), he died. Similarly, if you watch the film, his (Pele’s) father was also an aspiring soccer player but he could never make it to that level. “And his seed of aspiration which he sowed, and his blessings... I would say somehow made Pele a huge superstar. So, it’s a story very similar to mine,” Rahman said at the trailer launch when he was asked to share his success mantra. “So it’s a lesson for every aspiring father who never made it, the kids will make it. Be firm and believe in almighty. Encourage your kids and

give them all your blessings,” he added. With music by Rahman, the film is directed and written by Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist.

Man claims to be Prince’s son, demands DNA test IANS, LOS ANGELES

A

man has filed papers in Carver County, Minnesota, claiming to be late singer Prince’s biological son. He has requested for a DNA test to prove his claim. Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, the man named Carlin Q. Williams, has also petitioned to be determined as Prince’s “sole surviving legal heir”, reports aceshowbiz.com. The court documents feature a

statement from Williams’ mother Marsha Henson, who said that she had unprotected sex with Prince in July 1976 in Kansas city and she conceived Williams that day. On May 6, an order of genetic testing was filed in Minessota to allow DNA testing on a sample of Prince’s blood. The results of that test could then be used to settle any potential claims of paternity against the late pop star. Though his body was cremated shortly after his death on April 21,

the Midwest Medical Examiner has extracted and kept his blood, which could be used during the investigation process.

The filing also recognizes “that parentage issues might arise and that timing can be of concern when conducting genetic testing”.

‘Captain America: Civil War’: A purposeless fantasy

A

civil war usually evokes sharp polarized reactions, and like any such situation, “Captain America: Civil War” is no exception. For the general audience, this film would be a chaotic experience. And for fans of Marvel films, this would be nirvana, with a few misgivings. One has to be totally immersed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to enjoy this film or even understand what’s happening onscreen. This is perhaps owning to the fact that the directors go out of their way to pay homage to Marvel’s earlier films, via characters, cinematography, stunts and everything else. In this edition, after collateral

damage done by the Avengers’ action all over the globe, political pressure mounts. The world questions the Avengers’ role of peace keeping and insist on installing a system of accountability. Divided

over “rights” issue, with Captain America on one side and Iron Man on the other, a civil war ensues. Once again teaming together after the 2014 release “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”,

Film: “Captain America: Civil War”; Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo; Cast: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Emily VanCamp, Marisa Tomei, Tom Holland, Frank Grillo, Martin Freeman Rating: **1/2

script writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, along with director brothers Anthony and Joe

Russo deliver a complex story packed with numerous characters. With so many superheroes, this seems like an extension of “The Avengers” series. One thing that works in favor of this film is that the characters feel like real people. They are never cartoonish, and, ironically, they feel like they are at the most human, when they are behaving in superhuman ways. The film is action-heavy with set pieces of hyper-lucid combat scenes that include chases and fights, where some personalities get to shine more than others. Overall, “Captain America: Civil War” is a purposeless fantasy battle, punctuated with humor, that may appeal only to its fans.

Nargis Fakhri isn’t affected by criticism anymore A

ctress Nargis Fakhri, who drew flak for her performance in director Imtiaz Ali’s 2011 musical romantic drama Rockstar, says she is not affected by critics anymore. “Now whatever people say it doesn’t affect me that way because after Rockstar it was so dramatic. Now I have a better understanding (of films) so now I don’t care. But I am so proud of that film,” Nargis told IANS. However, Nargis admitted that the negative reviews for her debut film had a “traumatizing” effect on her. “After Rockstar it was tough because all the reviews came out were so nega-

tive that it was very traumatizing. I never wanted to be an actress... I didn’t even ask for this... It was horrible and so dramatic,” she said. Nargis is now gearing up for the release of Azhar, where she will be seen portraying former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin’s second wife Sangeeta Bijlani’s role. How does she feel about comparisons with Sangeeta?

“It’s not giving me any pressure... I do the best what I can. Yes, I know there will be comparisons... I just want people to believe that I am her,” she said. Directed by Tony D’Souza, Azhar, which is jointly produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and MSM Motion Picture, also stars Emraan Hashmi, Prachi Desai, Lara Dutta and Huma Qureshi in pivotal roles. The film will release on May 13.

ctress Sunny Leone has a pretty unusual bucket list. Where many dream of trying out various adventure sports like bungee jumping and sky diving, Sunny says she wishes to “swim with the sharks” one day in her life. “I would like to swim with the sharks. That’s on my bucket list. Real, gray sharks. I should be in a cage though so that it doesn’t end up eating me,” Sunny said on TV show Yaar Mera Superstar. Apart from that, Sunny also wants to spend some time in a ashram as she loves silence. “I would also like to go to one of those ashrams as I love silence. If I were to go to a place like that, it will help me understand myself,” the Jism 2 star said. Sunny married to film producer Daniel Weber and has a pet Snake.

A

ctor Sidharth Malhotra loves to travel “a lot” and says he “learnt a lot” about people, cultures and food during his journeys. “My father was in Merchant Navy, so I got numerous opportunities to travel to various ports, to go on ships and visit the seas. I learnt a lot, got to see different people, cultures, food, clothes... I think that is what has made me into this personality today,” he added. “All my travels are romantic. The company obviously matters during travel. If you go on a train ride alone, there is a different kind of romance in it and always love to have friends along,” he added.

I’m trying to do more romantic films now: Irrfan

I

nternationally acclaimed Indian actor Irrfan Khan, who has carved out his own niche in the entertainment industry through hard-hitting, realistic and tough roles in films, says after the success of National Award winning film Piku, he next wants to explore more of the romantic genre. He also wishes to perform roles that are totally opposite to his onscreen image. “Whatever roles I got, I did. I have played negative roles. I have played positive roles and even humorous ones. Whatever came in my way, I did that. In Piku, I showed my romantic side. Right now I’m trying to explore more of romantic films, which I really didn’t get a chance to do earlier,” Irrfan told IANS.

COMMUNITY NEWS/midwest Balaji Rajagopalan named Sant Rajinder Singh steals show at UN business college dean 2

FRIDAY, 13 MAY, 2016

BY A STAFF WRITER EW YORK, NY-- Renowned spiritual master Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj, head of Science of Spirituality, is no stranger to the United Nations (UN). He was a featured speaker at the Millennium World Summit in 2000, when he delivered his message of inner and outer peace through spirituality to an international audience of religious and spiritual leaders. On May 3, he once again gave his address at the hallowed institution, sponsored by the UNSRC SaluS Well Being Network Club in collaboration with Science of Spirituality. Appropriate to the occasion, his topic was, “Meditation as Medication for the Soul,” based on the title of his book by the same name. The Reverend Susana Bastarrica, president, UNSRC SaluS Well Being Network, and Vijay Nambiar, SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon’s special advisor, introduced the spiritual master, welcoming him to the UN.

N

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj

For the next hour, Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj spoke to an attentive audience about the benefits of meditation, emphasizing that relaxation, stress relief, better concentration, and improved relationships are byproducts of meditation, not its sole purpose.

He said the prime purpose of stilling the body and stilling the mind in meditation was to experience God within ourselves. He also said that in meeting with world leaders, he found they were seeking peaceful solutions to conflict. “They are realizing that becoming more peaceful themselves through an interest in meditation, they are able to make better judgements in challenging situations”, said the sant. Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s life and work can be summed up as a continuous journey of love and service. His peace paradigm, transforming lives through meditation, is an achievable construct that will heal the world one soul at a time. As head of Science of Spirituality, he is internationally recognized for his work toward promoting human unity. Among his many awards and tributes are five honorary doctorates for his tireless efforts in this field. His is a message of hope and promise, a light dispelling darkness in troubled times.

Dr. Pandey was chosen for this honor by his peers in recognition of his outstanding body of academic work and the recognition he has achieved as a world leader in the epigenetics of alcohol use and abuse. His innovative research work has demonstrated that alcohol drinking, by causing chemical modifications of proteins and DNA, interacts with and affects regulation of genes. This way alcohol alters neuronal function in the brain and behaviors of individuals. Binge alcohol drinking is very common in adolescents and pioneering research work by Dr. Pandey has demonstrated that exposure of the developing brain to alcohol in the crucial adolescent stage produces a long-lasting change in gene expression in key brain circuitries that are responsible for controlling anxiety, emotion and cognition and thereby predispose an individual to adult psychopathology later in life.

Amrinder Singh woos non-resident Punjabis

Ayodaya Salwan, Dr Harjinder Khaira, Bob Hundal, Ajaib Singh Lakhan, Santokh Singh DC, Ajmer Singh Pannu, with Captain Amrinder Singh.

BY A STAFF WRITER HICAGO, IL -- Punjab Pradesh Congress president and former Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amrinder Singh has sought cooperation of non-resident Punjabis to put Punjab on the trail of development again. Expressing concern over the current critical situation in Punjab, he alleged that Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal were playing politics on every issue whereas the need of hour was to work together for the betterment of Punjab. “At present, Punjab is reeling under unemployment, the farmers are committing suicides, law and order situation is deteriorating and corruption is everywhere. Badal and his party are more involved in robbing Punjab.

C

As a result, Punjab has been left far behind in development”. Captain Amrinder Singh, who was on tour of North America, was addressing a rally of Congress workers here recently, asked the non-resident Punjabis for whole-hearted support for Punjab assembly elections in 2017. Congress supporters from neighbouring states--Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio--also attended the rally. Sukhwinder Singh Randhawa, MLA from Dera Baba Nanak, Punjab Pradesh Congress vice president Kewal Singh Dhillon, ex Minister Malkit Singh Dakha, Rana Gurjit Singh Sodhi, Sukh Sarkaria, Tripat Singh Bajwa, Raghbir Singh Ghun and other Congress leaders who accompanies Captain Amrinder Singh from Punjab, were also present in the rally.

AKANKI SHARMA, NEW DELHI

W

hen Aditya Dubey took up a job in Sydney five years ago, his elderly parents had mixed feelings — they were happy for his success, but saddened by the fact that he would be so far away and practically inaccessible. There was, of course, the telephone, but even the weekly calls were a financial burden. So Aditya’s father Dharam Prakash Dubey, 68, and his mother Manjushree, 69, though not exactly techsavvy, began using technology to keep in touch — first experimenting with email, which entailed firing up a

computer, and later Skype which, given the connectivity in India, was not always a satisfactory experience. Then along came smartphones — Aditya gifted them one — and, with it, mobile messaging. It was, for the Dubey couple, a godsend. “Now we hardly feel that Aditya is so far away from us, thanks to WhatsApp; we interact and chat with him almost daily,” Dharam Prakash told IANS. The Dubey family is not alone. Adapting to the new technology on smartphones, iPads, tablets and phablets has bridged the chasm of distance for senior adults and they now conveniently connect with their children anywhere in the world.

Smartphones can make you hyperactive: Study NEW YORK: Are you getting bored easily when trying to focus, or having difficulty doing quiet tasks and activities? If yes, the pervasive use of a smartphone could be the reason behind these attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-like symptoms, new research suggests. Recent polls have shown that as many as 95 percent of smartphone users have used their phones during social gatherings; that seven in 10 people used their phones while working; and one in 10 admitted to checking their phones during sex. Smartphone owners spend nearly two hours per day using their phones, said lead researcher Kostadin Kushlev from University of Virginia in the US. “We found the first experimental evidence that smartphone interruptions can cause greater inattention and hyperactivity — symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder — even in people drawn from a nonclinical population,” Kushlev said.

During the study, 221 students at University of British Columbia in Canada, the results showed that the participants experienced significantly higher levels of inattention and hyperactivity when alerts were turned on and people who have not been diagnosed with ADHD may experience some of the disorder’s symptoms, including distraction, difficulty focusing and getting bored easily when trying to focus. “Smartphones may contribute to these symptoms by serving as a quick and easy source of distraction,” Kushlev said. The silver lining is that the problem can be turned off.

There are nearly 70 million active monthly WhatsApp and for the elderly, mobile messaging with call option has changed the way they used to communicate with their loved ones in the past According to the latest industry figures, there are nearly 70 million active monthly WhatsApp users in India, and the number is growing. Free messaging and calling app Viber recently announced that it has

over 40 million registered users in India. For the elderly in India, mobile messaging with call option has changed the way they used to communicate with their loved ones in the past. For 75-year-old doctor Sumangla Bhan, who lives alone, it was WhatsApp that helped her to connect with her daughter who had shifted to New York a few years back. “Earlier when I had laptop, we used to exchange emails. Later, we started having video chats over Skype and once WhatsApp came, life became so easy. It has almost been a year since I used my laptop to send my daughter an email,” she told IANS.

Before the “laptop era”, Bhan used to call her daughter, who teaches in Columbia University, but only about once a week. “What a respite with WhatsApp nowadays,” she quipped. WhatsApp has also helped cut the distance between 63-yearold Mahesh Dubey and his two daughters who are settled in Britain, and a son who lives in the US. Mahesh also started communicating with his kids first through emails, then shifted to Skype and finally switched to WhatsApp. With more and more Internetbased and smartphone-based applications on the anvil, being virtually present with your kids abroad will not be a far-fetched dream.

Walk and cycle to ward off air pollution IANS, LONDON

T

he benefits of walking and cycling outweigh the negative effects on health in cities like New Delhi with high levels of air pollution, says a study which found that cycling and regular physical activity can help reduce vehicle emissions. According to the researchers, air pollution risks will not negate the health benefits of active travel in urban areas. “Even in Delhi — one of the most polluted cities in the world — with pollution levels 10 times those in London, people need to cycle over five hours per week before the pollution risks outweigh the health benefits,” said lead study author Marko Tainio from the University of Cambridge. “We should remember that a minority of workers in the mostpolluted cities, such as bike messengers, may be exposed to levels of air pollution high enough to cancel out the health benefits of physical activity,” Tainio added in the paper published in the journal Preventive Medicine.

The team used computer simulations to compare the risks and benefits of walking and cycling across a range of air pollution concentrations around the world. One way for people to increase their levels of physical activity is through “active travel” like example walking and cycling. The findings indicate that the

main sources of air pollution in cities is transport and a shift from cars, motorbikes and buses to “active travel” would help to reduce emissions. Only one percent of cities had pollution levels high enough that the risks of air pollution could start to overcome the benefits of physical activity.

Go easy on junk food for healthy kidneys

Avoid eating burgers, pizzas and desserts as eating junk food daily can cause as much damage to your kidneys as diabetes, says a study IANS, LONDON

T

ry to avoid burgers, pizzas and desserts at times as eating junk and fatty food regularly can cause as much damage to your kidneys as diabetes, a study has warned. In Type 2 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or does not react to it which causes an accumulation of sugar (glucose) in the blood that can have severe longterm consequences for organs, such as kidneys and can lead to diabetic kidney disease. “The western diet has more and more processed junk food and fat and there is a well-established link between excessive consumption of this food and recent increases in the prevalence of obesity and Type 2 diabetes,” said lead study author Havovi Chichger from Anglia Ruskin University in Britain. “In our study, Type 1 and Type 2

diabetes both induce changes in glucose transport in the kidney but junk food or a diet high in fat causes changes that are very similar to those found in Type 2 diabetes,” Chichger added in a paper published in the journal Experimental

MIDWEST / EASTCOAST

Physiology. The team used animal models of diabetes and models of diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance to see how insulin resistance and too much sugar or fat affect glucose transporters in the kidney.

The rats were fed junk food consisting cheese, chocolate bars, biscuits and marshmallows for eight weeks, or a rodent ate high in fat (containing 60 percent) for five weeks. They then tested the effect of these diets on blood sugar levels and the different glucose transporters in the kidneys. The effect of the diets on these transporters was compared with the changes also seen in rat models of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The results revealed that certain types of glucose transporters as well as their regulatory proteins were present in a higher number in Type 2 diabetic rats. But a high-fat diet and junk food diet caused a similar increase in those receptors. “Finding a way to block glucose re-absorption in the kidneys could offer a potential treatment for lowering blood sugar levels,” the authors stated.

Full moon may reduce sleep in kids TORONTO: While the full moon does not make kids hyperactive — as commonly believed — it may decrease their sleep time by five minutes on an average, says a study. However, the clinical implication of sleeping five minutes less during full moon does not represent a considerable threat to health, the researchers pointed out.

The study was conducted on 5,812 children from five continents. Data collection took place over 28 months, which is equivalent to the same number of lunar cycles and then subdivided into three lunar phases — full moon, half-moon and new moon. The findings revealed that nocturnal sleep duration around full moon compared to new moon reported an average decrease of five minutes. “Only one percent sleep alteration in full moon, and this is largely explained by our large sample size that maximizes statistical power,” the authors stated.

Yoga can improve memory, reduce Alzheimer’s risk IANS, NEW YORK

I Can pets make you happy? NEW YORK: Humans love pets like their own children and whenever they feel socially rejected or sad, just a thought or a picture of their pet can lift up their mood, a study has found, suggesting that animals have a unique ability to comfort people. Thinking about naming a human did not produce the same effect, with the study showcasing evidence that thoughts about a pet can provide a soothing stimulus for humans. “Those who are more predisposed to attributing entities with human-like characteristics would benefit from even the most minimal engagement with animals,” said lead study author Christina M Brown from Miami University in the US.

People who are more likely to assign human-like qualities to animals or inanimate objects may benefit from just thinking about animals when feeling socially rejected. The team conducted three separate studies in which participants were asked to relive past experiences of social rejection. After this, they were then asked to name photographed animals and their feelings were analyzed again. The participants who thought of names for animals reported less negative emotions and feelings of rejection than those who did not. “Anthropomorphism may be an effective and powerful way to eradicate negative feelings,” the authors noted.

f you are trying to improve memory or offset the risk for developing memory loss or Alzheimer’s disease, regular practice of yoga and meditation could be a simple, safe and low-cost solution to improving brain fitness, new research suggests. The team found that a threemonth course of Kundalini yoga and Kirtan Kriya meditation practice helped minimize the cognitive and emotional problems that often precede Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Kirtan Kriya, which involves chanting, hand movements and visualization of light, has been practiced for hundreds of years in India as a way to prevent cognitive decline in older adults. Yoga and meditation was even more effective than the memory enhancement exercises that have been considered the gold standard for managing mild cognitive impairment, the findings showed. “Memory training was compara-

ble to yoga with meditation in terms of improving memory, but yoga provided a broader benefit than memory training because it also helped with mood, anxiety and coping skills,” said the study’s senior author Helen Lavretsky, professor at University of California, Los Angeles, US. The study of 25 participants, all over the age of 55, measured changes not just in behavior but also in brain activity.

Eleven participants received one hour a week of memory enhancement training and spent 20 minutes a day performing memory exercises -- verbal and visual association and other practical strategies for improving memory, based on research-backed techniques. Those who had practiced yoga and meditation had better improvements than the other participants in visual-spatial memory skills.
